Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand caregivers' experience of participating in a caregiver-mediated in-home feeding intervention, the Engaged Eaters Program, for their young autistic child. This qualitative study utilized a thematic approach to analyze post-intervention semi-structured interviews with thirteen mothers of autistic children between the ages of 2 to 7 years after they participated in the intervention. Interview questions focused on the child and family experience, what worked well, what could be improved, and how the intervention integrated into family routines. Four major themes were identified: In-Home Intervention, Parent Skill and Knowledge, Increased Social Participation, and Parent Responsibilities and Challenges. Sub-themes provided descriptions of learning practical tools to support their child, increasing self-efficacy, and impacts on family life. Mothers described an increase in tangible skills that were easily practiced in the home environment that improved their confidence and self-efficacy in feeding their children. They also described how participation did require more work and time commitment for them beyond their regular responsibilities. The caregiver experience is essential to understand for intervention effectiveness while simultaneously addressing child, caregiver, and family needs. By focusing on the mothers' experiences, individualized needs, and self-efficacy, we were able to better understand how integrating an intervention into the family context and daily routines may be beneficial for the whole family.

Abstract
Background Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an increasingly prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder. However, the number of children who exhibit subthreshold levels of ASD symptoms, significant enough to experience functional and adaptive difficulties, is also substantial. These children require early interventions, similar to those diagnosed with ASD, due to their exhibited adaptive and behavioral challenges. PCIT offers a unique opportunity for children and their parents exhibiting subthreshold ASD to address such challenges through its practices and techniques. Aim This study aims to assess the initial result effectiveness of standard PCIT on the adaptive skills and school refusal behaviors of children exhibiting subthreshold ASD, as well as on the levels of parental stress and caregiving burden. The study intends to test these effects and report the outcomes. Method This study is a case study, and it involves three children with subthreshold ASD symptoms and their parents. The therapy processes were conducted for approximately 1 year. Result Results obtained from this study revealed that PCIT holds promising prospects for improving adaptive and interaction skills, reducing school refusal, and alleviating parental stress and caregiving burden among children exhibiting subthreshold ASD. Discussion PCIT is considered a functional approach for children and parents demonstrating subthreshold ASD symptoms, besides interventions addressing diagnosed ASD children. It is suggested that future studies should evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of PCIT through randomized controlled trials in the context of subthreshold ASD.

Abstract
LAY ABSTRACT Caregiver coaching is an evidence-based practice for young autistic children, but it is not widely used in community-based early intervention services. Previous research has explored why caregiver coaching is not widespread in early intervention, but only from the perspective of early intervention providers. Caregivers, providers, and administrators are all involved in the decision of whether to use caregiver coaching in early intervention. Therefore, it is important to include all perspectives in research regarding this practice. In this study we interviewed 20 caregivers of autistic children, 36 early intervention providers, and 6 administrators from early intervention agencies and asked questions about their perspectives regarding the use of caregiver coaching in early intervention. We did this to figure out what factors help and hinder the use of caregiver coaching in this setting and to see how caregivers, providers, and administrators agreed or disagreed on these factors. All participants agreed that caregivers' attitudes and expectations can influence whether caregiver coaching is used. In addition, all participants agreed that when caregivers and providers collaborate and have a strong working relationship, it can facilitate the use of caregiver coaching in early intervention. Other factors, such as caregiver stress and provider flexibility were also discussed. Based on these findings, we suggest strategies that can be used to possibly increase the use of caregiver coaching in early intervention for autistic children and their families.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to investigate the feasibility of the home-based parent- mediated intervention Naturalistic developmental behavioral intervention (HB-NDBI) in underserved Taiwanese families of children with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and explore its effects on children's developmental skills and parents' parenting stress. METHOD 24 underserved Taiwanese families of children with ASD (mean age = 46.5 months) received 12-week HB-NDBI programs. Social Responsiveness Scale, Second Edition (SRS-2), Mullen Scales of Early Learning (MSEL), Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/1.5-5), and Parenting Stress Index (PSI) were administered before and after the HB-NDBI programs. RESULTS Following the HB-NDBI programs, significant improvements in social cognition, social communication subscales, receptive language subscale, internalizing, externalizing, and total behavioral problems scales of children, and release of parenting stress were observed. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated the feasibility of home-based parent-mediated intervention for underserved families in Taiwan. These promising results might facilitate the development of such interventions for underserved families.

Abstract
PURPOSE Pivotal response treatment (PRT) is a well-established intervention addressing core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with parent involvement as a key component. The current study aimed to examine the effects of PRT parent training on parent fidelity and provide descriptive analyses of parent-child interactions before and after parent training. It also probed parental acceptance and satisfaction with the program. METHODS A concurrent multiple baseline design across participants was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the parent training program. Four parents (range 32-47 years old) and their children with ASD participated in the study. The intervention comprised 12 one-on-one parent training sessions over six consecutive weeks. The visual analysis and effect size calculation (Tau-U) were used to evaluate functional relationship between independent and dependent variables. The descriptive analysis was used to analyze parent-child interaction data. RESULTS The findings reveal that all parents learned and maintained PRT with a high level of fidelity, they also enhanced awareness to create more opportunities for interactions during free play, and the parents were very satisfied with the program. The results also indicate that the six-week parent training program is effective in teaching parents to implement PRT with their children. CONCLUSION These results suggest that the parent training program may be a promising treatment model that is effective, efficient, and cost-effective. Implications for future research and practice are then discussed.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Occupational therapy is one of the most used interventions for children on the autism spectrum. There is a critical need to develop an operationalized list of key treatment components of usual-care occupational therapy practice for children on the autism spectrum. OBJECTIVE To identify and develop consensus on definitions and examples of key treatment components of usual-care occupational therapy for children on the autism spectrum, ages 6 to 13 yr. DESIGN We conducted a Delphi study to obtain feedback from a panel of experts. SETTING Electronic survey. PARTICIPANTS 17 occupational therapy panelists with expertise in autism intervention. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Panelists rated the definition and example of each treatment component and provided feedback through multiple rounds of survey. RESULTS On the basis of the panelists' feedback on Delphi Round 1, the criteria rating form was revised to include four questions for the definition and example of each treatment component. Through four Delphi rounds of consensus building, we developed an operationalized list of 20 treatment components with definitions and examples that incorporated elements of usual-care occupational therapy intervention for children on the autism spectrum. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This operationalized list of treatment components serves as a foundational framework to improve education, practice, and research of occupational therapy intervention for children on the autism spectrum. Plain-Language Summary: This study identified and developed consensus on definitions and examples of key treatment components used in usual-care outpatient occupational therapy for children on the autism spectrum. Through four rounds of consensus building with 17 occupational therapy experts in autism, we identified 20 key treatment components central to occupational therapy practice. Our results have the potential to serve as a framework to improve education, practice, and clinical research in autism.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Parent-mediated interventions are therapeutic approaches that use parent training to enable parents to provide primary support and intervention to their child through the development of necessary skills, knowledge, and resources.Parent-mediated interventions can be broadly divided into two stages: (1) Clinicians educating, training and coaching parents in the implementation of an intervention and relevant information regarding their child's condition and (2) Parent(s) mediating and implementing the intervention based on the coaching and education received. These interventions can act as the primary intervention for children or supplement clinical interventions. This review will include both stages of the implementation process as well as both primary and supplementary interventions. Outcomes of parent-mediated interventions include long-term symptom reduction, improved prognosis for a wide range of behavioural and brain functions and enhanced parent-child dyadic social communication. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This systematic review aims to synthesise existing evidence and identify the characteristics of effective parent-mediated intervention for parents of children with neurodevelopmental disorders residing in rural areas. Systematic searches of CINAHL, PsycINFO, ProQuest allied health and nursing database, Ebscohost Psych and Behavioural database and SocINDEX were conducted twice with the latest completed on 5 March 2024 using preidentified search terms. Citations will be imported into EndNote V.20.6 (Clarivate Analytics, Pennsylvania, USA) to organise and de-duplicate and then Covidence to complete screening and extraction. The articles will be screened and reviewed following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines for systematic reviews of Mixed methods. The JBI appraisal tools for systematic reviews will be used to assess the trustworthiness, relevance and results of qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods studies. The scope of the literature analysed will include articles published between 2013 and 2024 in English. Literature was limited to the last 10 years to ensure the relevance of results as the intention is to report on current evidence. The start date of the study was March 2023 and the planned completion date is October 2024. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study will neither involve human nor animal subjects and does not require ethics approval. Results will be disseminated to relevant groups in peer-reviewed journal(s) and at relevant children and parent health conferences or rural conferences. The key outcomes will also be shared on social media to support access for non-research audiences.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically assess the quality of management guidelines for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, analyze key management recommendation differences and causes among guidelines, and provide better guideline assessments for clinical workers. METHODS Clinical guidelines for managing children and adolescents with autism were systematically retrieved from a database. Four reviewers independently evaluated the guidelines using the assessment guideline tool, Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II), and the intra-group correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to measure the consistency of the assessment guidelines among the four reviewers and the differences and reasons for the recommendations and supporting evidence were compared and analyzed. RESULTS A total of ten management guidelines for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder published from 2014 to 2022 were included in this study, with high overall agreement between raters (range of intra-group correlation coefficients: 53.3% ∼ 85.0%), and areas with better median scores and ranges in Protocol II were as follows: domain 1 (scope and purpose, median = 86.1%, 59.7%-98.6%), Domain 4 (clarity of statements, median = 88.2%, 38.9%-100.0%) and domain 6 (independence of editors, median = 71.9%, 0.0%-100.0%). Among the ten guidelines the guidelines published by the Scott Intercollegiate Guidelines Network in 2016 and by the National Institute for health and care excellence in 2021 scored high and were recommended for adoption, 88.7%, 84.9%, respectively. CONCLUSION There is considerable variation between the quality of guidelines for the management of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.

Abstract
AIM This scoping review synthesizes literature about occupational therapy parent-mediated interventions (PMIs) that target occupation-based outcomes for children with developmental disabilities (DD). METHODS A search of PubMed, Web of Science, and CINAHL from 2010 through 2023 was performed resulting in 471 publications. Studies were included if they involved PMIs for participants with DD aged 3-12 years and were published in English. Studies were excluded if the outcomes were not occupation-based. A thematic analysis was conducted following an iterative review of charted data. RESULTS Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria reflecting four themes across occupational therapy PMIs, including variation in terminologies, types of PMIs, key components of PMIs, and the overall impact. While the effects of PMIs are difficult to define due to the variability in the samples, interventions, and outcomes, this review suggests general positive impacts of PMIs. CONCLUSION The emerging body of evidence supporting PMIs within the field of occupational therapy suggests they are feasible and have the potential to improve child and parent outcomes when delivered to children with DD. Further research is needed to clarify PMIs' components, unify the identification terminology, and test the efficacy of different types of PMIs for specific populations.

Occupational therapists view play through a unique lens. This State of the Science article seeks to increase awareness regarding the occupational therapy profession's contributions and to situate those contributions within the larger body of literature on play while also promoting further study of play as an occupation.

Abstract
Although play is an essential occupation for children, parents of children with autistic traits tend to struggle with play-based interpersonal interaction with them. Tickling play appears to be one of the most interpersonal forms of play because nobody can tickle themselves. However, atypical tactile processing (e.g. tactile sensitivity) has been reported in children with autistic traits, who may exhibit atypical behavioral responses during tickling play. Our aim was to investigate the association between autistic traits and behavioral responses during parent-child tickling play in Japanese young children. We recorded tickling interaction between children and their parents using behavior coding with six behavioral items. Autistic traits and tactile sensitivity were measured using parent-reported questionnaires. Results showed two behavioral responses were significantly associated with autistic traits in all children: "approach with positive emotional response" and "no response" were negatively and positively correlated with autistic traits, respectively. This exploratory study suggests that behavioral responses during tickling play may be associated with autistic traits.

Abstract
The current study aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of self-management interventions for teaching daily living skills to autistic individuals. This study accessed the corresponding studies by doing a search in six databases. 14 articles and one dissertation met the inclusion criteria. The included studies were first analyzed descriptively and coded according to quality indicators using What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) standards. Second, the effect sizes of the included studies were calculated using two different effect size measures (i.e., Tau-U and performance-criteria-based effect size values [PCES]). Third, these analyses were also conducted for generalization and maintenance data. Of 15 studies included in this review, nine met the WWC standards with and without reservations. Tau-U analyses were conducted for 14 studies, whereas PCES values were calculated for only eight studies with mastery criteria. The findings indicated that the self-management interventions had a .93 CI95 (.80, 1) overall effect size for Tau-U with a very large effect. On the other hand, the overall effect size for the PCES values indicated a moderate effect with .99. The weighted effect sizes in generalization and maintenance phases were very large for Tau-U; however, moderate to high effects for PCES. Although self-management interventions showed diversity, one of the domains of daily living skills (i.e., community living skills) has not been studied in the field. Notably, among the studies in our review, the last ones are from 2019. Detailed findings from descriptive analyses and two different effect size calculations are discussed, and recommendations for future studies are given.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Caregivers are essential partners in caregiver-mediated interventions that build on family routines and practices. Research identifying how participation as an intervention partner influences caregivers' outcomes, including stress and self-efficacy, is scarce. OBJECTIVE To evaluate caregiver outcomes (stress, self-efficacy, and positive feeding responses and confidence) after participation in the Engaged Eaters Program. DESIGN Quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design. SETTING In-home via telehealth. PARTICIPANTS Fourteen primary caregivers of an autistic child (ages 2-7 yr) with feeding challenges. INTERVENTION The Engaged Eaters Program-Telehealth, a caregiver-mediated 6-mo in-home telehealth feeding intervention for autistic children ages 2 to 7 yr that included 24 intervention visits, eight caregiver training modules, and consultation with a dietician. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Relationships between child feeding challenge severity and caregiver outcomes and individual differences in caregivers' intervention responses were evaluated. We assessed caregivers' stress (Parenting Stress Index, Fourth Edition Short Form), self-efficacy (Parent Sense of Competence Scale), Positive Feeding Responses and Confidence (PFRC; composite score of items from other assessments), and individual intervention response using pre- to postintervention change in scores. RESULTS Exploration of individual differences revealed that only caregivers with intake PFRC scores below the mean made significant improvements by the end of the intervention. No significant group-level changes were identified for stress, self-efficacy, or PFRC. Feeding challenge severity was not significantly related to caregiver outcomes. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The results emphasize the importance of considering baseline practices, efficacy, and caregiver confidence when engaging caregivers in intervention. Future research should explore the nuanced relationship between caregiver outcomes and child characteristics. Plain-Language Summary: Caregivers are essential partners with feeding interventions that build on family routines and practices. When working with caregivers, occupational therapists should consider caregivers' readiness for and responses to an intervention because intervention practices may differentially affect caregivers' parenting practices, confidence, and self-efficacy. Caregivers' responses may also affect the overall effectiveness of a caregiver-mediated intervention. Positionality Statement: The term caregiver-mediated in used throughout this article in place of parent-mediated to be inclusive of all types of caregivers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited study has investigated the influence of parent-child interaction on brain functional alterations and development outcomes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) children. This pilot study aimed to explore the relationship between parent-child interaction, brain functional activities and development outcomes of ASD children. METHODS and Procedures: 653 ASD with an average age of 41.06 ± 10.88 months and 102 typically developmental (TD) children with an average age of 44.35 ± 18.39 months were enrolled in this study, of whom 155 ASD completed brain rs-fMRI scans. The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) measured using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data reflect local brain function. The parent-child interaction was assessed by the Chinese Parent-child Interaction Scale (CPCIS). Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and developmental quotient (DQ) indicated development outcomes. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS Total CPCIS score was negatively correlated with CARS total score, and positively correlated with DQ. The frequency of parent-child interaction was negatively correlated with ALFF values in the left median cingulate and paracingulate gyri (DCG.L) and ReHo values in the right superior frontal gyrus, medial (SFGmed.R)(P < 0.05, FDR correction). ALFF values in the DCG.L and ReHo values in the SFGmed.R play complete mediating roles in the relationship between parent-child interaction and performance DQ. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS This study suggest that parent-child interaction has an impact on autistic characteristics and DQ of ASD children. Local brain regions with functional abnormalities in the DCG.L and SFGmed.R may be a crucial factors affecting the performance development of ASD children with reduced parent-child interaction.

Abstract
Background and aims Caregiver-delivered programs are a recommended best practice to support young autistic children. While research has extensively explored children's outcomes quantitatively, minimal qualitative research has been conducted to understand caregivers' perspectives of program outcomes for themselves and their children. Hearing directly from caregivers is an important step in ensuring these programs are meeting the needs of those who use them. This study explored caregivers' perceived outcomes following one virtual caregiver-delivered program, The Hanen Centre's More Than Words® (MTW) program. Methods This study was a secondary analysis of data from individual interviews conducted with 21 caregivers who had recently participated in a virtual MTW program. A hybrid codebook thematic analysis approach was taken to analyze the interview data. Program outcomes were coded and analyzed within the International Classification Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) framework. Additionally, caregivers completed an online survey and rated Likert Scale items about perceived program outcomes, which were analyzed descriptively. Results Five themes were identified: (1) caregivers learned new strategies to facilitate their child's development, (2) caregivers developed a new mindset, (3) children gained functional communication skills, (4) caregiver-child relationships improved, and (5) caregivers gained a social and professional support network. These themes fell within four of five ICF framework components (activities, participation, personal factors, and environmental factors). No themes were identified under Body Structures and Functions. Survey results indicated most caregivers reported learning new communication strategies (n = 20, 95%), and identifying new teaching opportunities with their child (n = 21, 100%). Conclusions Some reported outcomes, related to Activities and Participation, were consistent with previous reports in the literature on the MTW program. In line with previous research, caregivers learned strategies to support their child's communication development. Contrary to previous quantitative studies, caregivers in this study rarely commented on gains in vocabulary and instead focused on gains in skills that positively impacted their child's ability to engage in meaningful social interaction. Novel outcomes were identified within the Participation, Personal Factors, and Environmental Factors components of the ICF framework. Implications Caregivers in this study identified important outcomes for themselves and their child that have not been the focus of prior research, suggesting it is important to integrate their perspectives in the development and evaluation of caregiver-delivered programs. Clinicians should include goals that address outcomes identified as important by caregivers, including those that address children's Participation, and those that target caregivers' Personal and Environmental Factors. Developers of caregiver-delivered programs could integrate identified goals to ensure they are meeting families' needs.

Abstract
Infants develop attachment to their caregivers very early on. The quality of attachment is considered to be crucial for the emotional development of humans and animals alike. Despite its importance, very little is known about how attachment develops between children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their caregivers. The purpose of the present study was to assess the attachment patterns of two young children with ASD with their parents and to identify the means for promoting parent, child, and parent-child relational characteristics that may contribute to the development of secure attachment. The results replicated prior findings pertaining to attachment quality of children with ASD and demonstrated the effectiveness of a naturalistic, behavior-analytic intervention in improving the quality of their attachment.

Abstract
The COVID-19 outbreak beginning in 2019 has created a challenging period for families who have children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The purpose of this study was to examine parents' perceptions about the consequences of the pandemic on their child who has ASD and parents' concerns and resources during the pandemic. Data was collected between July to November 2020 from U.S. parents who have at least one child with ASD between 3 and 21 years old. An online survey, consisting of 88 items, was developed and distributed online in newsletters and Twitter pages of several ASD organizations, and various caregiving support groups on Facebook. Descriptive analysis showed that during the data collection time (N = 57), 79% of the children had immediate access to electronic devices to utilize online services. Many of the children used remote learning services for less than 2 h (74%) per day. Many children had difficulties following social distance rules. They spent more time in passive activities than active activities. Twenty-five percent of parents reported that they drank alcohol more often during the pandemic. However, parents who participated in support groups consumed less alcohol. Also, child symptom severity was associated with parents taking less times for themselves. These results can assist practitioners in identifying specific difficulties that parents and children with ASD experienced during the pandemic. This work also underlines the parents' needs for community supports and mental health services.

Abstract
Purpose: Autistic individuals often display social-communicative differences affecting aspects of daily living. The present study assessed the feasibility and potential efficacy of a dance-based exergame for enhancing autistic children's social-communication skills. Methods: A mixed method, within-subject, pre-test/post-test study design was employed. Children in their home (n = 4; Mage = 8.25 years old, SD = 0.50) and school environments (n = 31; Mage = 10.87 years old, SD = 1.61) participated in a dance-based exergaming intervention (Just Dance) for six weeks. Results: A positive change in children's social-communication skills was observed (p < 0.01). Results suggest Just Dance was easy to implement and enjoyable. Conclusion: A larger randomised control trial is warranted to confirm the effectiveness of the dance-based exergame.

Abstract
LAY ABSTRACT This study compared the first online parent training program for executive function intervention for autism to in-person parent training on the same content. Participants were parents of autistic children, who were between 8 and 12 years of age and did not have intellectual disability. Parents were randomized to the in-person (n = 51) or online (n = 46) training conditions. Both trainings were developed with stakeholder (parents and autistic people) guidance. In this trial, most parents reported that they liked both trainings and that they were able to implement what they learned with their children. Parents in both groups spent equivalent amounts of time (about 8 hours) with the training materials, but while 94% of parents in the in-person training attended both parent trainings, only 59% of parents in the online group completed all 10 online modules. Parents reported that it was difficult to stay motivated to complete the online trainings over the 10-week trial. Parent and child outcomes did not differ significantly between the groups. Overall, parents reported that the trainings resulted in a reduction in their own parenting strain and improvements in their child's flexibility, emotional control, and global executive function, but not planning and organization. These findings indicated brief in-person and online training can help parents learn to support and improve their autistic children's executive function abilities, reducing their own experience of parenting strain. The finding that the online training was equivalent to the in-person trainings is important because it is accessible to parents who encounter barriers to in-person care.

Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests that disruption of neuron activity contributes to the autistic phenotype. Thus, we aimed in this study to explore the role of protein kinase C beta (PKCβ) in the regulation of neuron activity in an autism model. The expression of PKCβ in the microarray data of autism animal models was obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Then, mice with autism-like behavior were prepared in EN2 knockout (-/- ) mice. The interaction between PKCβ on fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO) as well as between PGC-1α and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) were characterized. The effect of FTO on the N6 -methyladenosine (m6A) modification level of proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α) was assayed. Following transfection of overexpressed PKCβ and/or silenced UCP1, effects of PKCβ and UCP1 in autism-like behaviors in EN2-/- mice were analyzed. Results showed that PKCβ was downregulated in EN2-/- mouse brain tissues or neurons. PKCβ promoted the expression and stability of FTO, which downregulated the m6A modification level of PGC-1α to promote its expression. Moreover, PGC-1α positively targeted the expression of UCP1. PKCβ knockdown enhanced sociability and spatial exploration ability, and reduced neuron apoptosis in EN2-/- mouse models of autism, which was reversed by UCP1 overexpression. Collectively, PKCβ overexpression leads to activation of the FTO/m6A/PGC-1α/UCP1 axis, thus inhibiting neuron apoptosis and providing neuroprotection in mice with autism-like behavior.

Abstract
This paper provides the detailed protocol for a pilot study testing the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of a targeted two-phase, remotely delivered early intervention program for infants with neurogenetic conditions (NGC) and their caregivers. The Parent and Infant Inter(X)action Intervention (PIXI) is designed to support parents and infants with a NGC diagnosed in the first year of life. PIXI is implemented in two phases, with the first phase focusing on psychoeducation, parent support, and how to establish routines for supporting infant development. Phase II helps parents learn targeted skills to support their infant's development as symptoms may begin to emerge. The proposed non-randomized feasibility pilot study will establish the feasibility of a year-long virtually implemented intervention program to support new parents of an infant diagnosed with an NGC.

Abstract
This interpretative phenomenological study explored play experiences between mothers who had completed, or were receiving treatment for, breast cancer and their young children and disease-related factors influencing those experiences. Six Puerto Rican mothers who had young children at the time of their primary treatment were interviewed. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed through constant comparative method. Two themes emerged: (a) "changes and challenges," which contextualized disease-related factors affecting the maternal role; and (b) "play and relationships with children" described play moments and how treatment affected these. Participants emphasized the benefits of playing and relating with their children while in treatment. Play as a co-occupation and an effective means to connect mothers with their children must be considered in the practice of occupational therapy. Future studies with more diverse samples of mothers at different stages of the disease are warranted to expand this exploratory work.

Abstract
Play as a therapeutic strategy can help to improve daily functioning in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Play-based intervention can thus be an optimal option for treatment of this population. Our aim was to describe play-based interventions used in children and adolescents with ASD. We conducted a scoping review. A peer-reviewed literature search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science and PsycINFO databases. We included experimental studies which analyzed play-based interventions in children and adolescents with ASD, which were published in English/Spanish with full text available. We used three tables elaborated a priori to perform data extraction by two authors. Fifteen studies were included, mostly conducted in Australia and published during the past 10 years. Play-based intervention was categorized into three groups: new technologies, symbolic play or official techniques. Interventions lasted approximately 11 weeks, contained one weekly session of 30-60 min and were delivered by parents and teachers. Play-based interventions using new technologies were the most used. Intervention duration and number of sessions varied between articles. Further studies are needed to create play-based intervention protocols which can be implemented in clinical practice with children and adolescents with ASD, thus promoting evidence-based interventions in this field.

Abstract
Early years interventions have shown to be effective in improving the social communication and language skills of autistic children. Therefore, various play-based interventions have been developed to support those developmental areas of autistic children. Although researchers have previously reported the overall effectiveness of different types of play-based interventions on the social communication and language skills of autistic children, no previous systematic reviews have yet evaluated the effectiveness of parent-mediated play-based interventions in preschool autistic children. The overarching aims of the study will be to (i) report the key characteristics and (ii) synthesise the results of studies evaluating parent-mediated play-based interventions targeting the social communication and language skills of preschool autistic children using experimental designs. A comprehensive search for and screening of the relevant studies published between 2000 and 2021 will be undertaken. To be included, studies will have to (i) use either a randomised control trial or quasi-experimental design, (ii) focus on preschool autistic children aged six years old or younger, (iii) deliver a play-based intervention in non-educational settings, and (iv) include at least one parent as the mediator of the intervention. Data extraction of all included studies will be undertaken using a specially devised template and they will also be assessed for risk of bias using an adapted form from the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. The overall characteristics of the included studies will be reported and a narrative synthesis of the results of the included studies will be undertaken. A meta-analysis may be performed (if justified) to report the pooled effect size of the parent-mediated play-based interventions on the social communication and language skills of preschool autistic children. Trial registration: The current study protocol was pre-registered with the international prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO: CRD42022302220).

Abstract
Teenage siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at risk of worse mental health outcomes than their peers, yet there have been few interventions focused on improving their psychosocial wellbeing. This study explored the acceptability of an 8-session virtual group mind-body resiliency intervention for teen siblings of children with ASD. We used mixed methods to assess quantitative and qualitative survey results. Participants reported that the intervention had the right amount of sessions (88%), structure (74%), and duration (89%). Most participants felt comfortable during sessions (74%), found it helpful to learn mind-body exercises (74%), and that the intervention helped in coping with stress (71%). Though participants were satisfied with the opportunity to meet peers, they desired more social connection.

Abstract
We examined the influence of a parent on robot-assisted activities for a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. We observed the interactions between a robot and the child wearing a wearable device during free play sessions. The child participated in four sessions with the parent and interacted willingly with the robot, therapist, and parent. The parent intervened when the child did not interact with the robot, considered “disengagement with the robot”. The number and method of intervention were decided solely by the parent. This study adopted video recording for behavioral observations and specifically observed the situations before the disengagement with the robot, the child’s behaviors during disengagement, and the parent’s intervention. The results showed that mostly the child abruptly discontinued the interactions with the robot without being stimulated by the surrounding environment. The second most common reason was being distracted by various devices in the play sessions, such as the wearable device, a video camera, and a laptop. Once he was disengaged with the robot, he primarily exhibited inappropriate and repetitive behaviors accentuating the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder. The child could re-initiate the interaction with the robot with an 80% chance through the parent’s intervention. This suggests that engagement with a robot may differ depending on the parent’s participation. Moreover, we must consider types of parental feedback to re-initiate engagement with a robot to benefit from the therapy adequately. In addition, environmental distractions must be considered, especially when using multiple devices for therapy.

Abstract
Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) is a promising intervention addressing core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with parent involvement as key component. Parent group-delivered PRT may be an effective treatment model, but currently the evidence is limited. Also, little attention has been paid to therapeutic involvement of multiple important contexts (e.g. home, school, community) of the young child. The current study explores a 14-week protocol of PRT parent group training (PRT-PG), complemented with individual parent–child sessions and involvement of teachers and other childcare providers. Children aged 2–6 years old with ASD and their parents (n = 20) were included. Preliminary results showed a significant increase in spontaneous initiations during a semi-structured therapist-child interaction together with widespread gains in clinical global functioning. No significant improvement on parent-rated general social-communication skills was observed. These findings justify further research on parent group delivered PRT models.

Abstract
PURPOSE This scoping review maps research in parent-mediated autism spectrum disorder interventions culturally adapted for Latin American populations, to provide an overview of the available evidence across perspectives and disciplines and to identify gaps in the research knowledge base. METHOD A systematic search for relevant articles was conducted using six databases and archival and forward hand searches of articles that met inclusion criteria. Titles and abstracts were reviewed by three authors, followed by full-text reviews of remaining articles. Twenty-one articles met inclusion criteria and were retained for data extraction. The ecological validity framework was used to frame data analysis and results. RESULTS In total, 19 studies described unique implementations of 16 different interventions, which spanned 21 articles, representing a range of study designs and implementing a variety of adaptations. Most adaptations consisted of surface-structure changes, spanning the dimensions of language, concepts, methods, context, and persons. Few articles were identified that described international studies or studies examining direct parent-mediated strategies with large sample sizes and strong methodological designs. CONCLUSIONS Several intervention adaptations that have potential for clinical utility are presented. Clinicians working with Latin American families are encouraged to discuss potential adaptations openly with families before choosing and implementing specific strategies.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of a 25-week school-based intervention and its ability to improve interoception and emotion regulation in an autistic pediatric population. Method One-group pre- and posttest design implementing The Interoception Curriculum: A Guide to Developing Mindful Self-Regulation in a self-contained school. Participants were 14 (11 male, 3 female) students between 9 and 19 years old. The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function 2 (BRIEF-2) and the Caregiver Questionnaire for Interoceptive Awareness-2nd Edition (CQIA-2) were used to determine changes in interoceptive awareness and emotion regulation. Results Statistically significant improvements were found between the preintervention and postintervention scores for both interoceptive awareness and emotion regulation. Conclusion This was the first study to examine the Interoception Curriculum in its entirety, providing evidence that the use of the Interoception Curriculum is feasible in a school setting and suggests that this intervention is effective for improvement of interoception. Findings also suggest that this improvement in interoception is related to improvement in emotional regulation for an autistic pediatric population.

Abstract
Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) is considered to be an empirically supported parent-mediated treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but research on parental experiences is lacking. This qualitative study examined the perspectives of parents of young children with ASD who participated in a 14-week PRT with parent group training (PRT-PG). Semi-structured interviews (n = 12) were carried out, based on Grounded Theory principles. Results indicated that facilitators and barriers were related to timing and expectations, training setting and characteristics, and participant characteristics. Perceived effects were related to improved child’s social-communication skills and well-being, parental insights into their child’s needs and own habitual patterns in communication and behavior, and positive changes in family cohesion. The findings indicate that in general parents value PRT-PG as feasible and effective.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by repetitive stereotypical behavior and communication deficits. Currently, it lacks a specific clinical treatment method. Pediatric Tuina is a recent therapy in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and has been used to treat children with ASD. Nonetheless, it remains uncommon given the lack of large-scale evidence-based medical studies. This study aims to compare the efficacy of Tuina and conventional treatment in children with ASD.
Methods
Eligible children will be randomly assigned to either the pediatric Tuina plus conventional treatment group or to the conventional treatment alone group based on a random table at a ratio of 1:1. The effectiveness of the Tuina intervention for ASD will be evaluated by a third-party organization. The pre- and post-intervention scores on the Childhood Autism Rating Scale comprised the primary outcome, whereas pre- and post-intervention scores on the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist were the secondary outcomes to assess improvement in symptoms. Baseline values of the participants will be determined at the time of registration. Outcomes will be evaluated after the 30th treatment session. The follow-up period will last for 6 months after treatment.
Discussion
This study will evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Tuina in the treatment of ASD. The results of this study could provide reliable evidence to improve the management of patients with ASD.

Abstract
Providing treatment to children with autism is a global health priority, and research demonstrates that caregivers can be trained in techniques to promote their child's social interaction, communication, play, positive behavior and skills. These caregiver-mediated interventions have been shown to promote a number of positive outcomes in children with autism, as well as their caregivers. When provided by telehealth, data indicate that caregiver training is acceptable and feasible, and associated with similar positive outcomes as live face-to-face training. Telehealth innovations, which have accelerated during the COVID-19 era, have demonstrated advantages over in-person delivery of services in terms of cost effectiveness and increased accessibility, however, more research is needed on feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness for different populations in different contexts. This brief review will highlight recent caregiver skills training interventions for autism that have been successfully adapted or designed for telehealth delivery. Telehealth interventions that are scalable, adaptable, caregiver-mediated, open-access, and delivered as part of a stepped care model, have the potential to address the global treatment gap for families of children with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities. Considerations relevant to the global scale-up of caregiver-mediated interventions will also be discussed.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the commonest neurodevelopmental disability. It is a highly complex disorder with an increasing prevalence and an unclear etiology. Consensus indicates that ASD arises as a genetically modulated, and environmentally influenced condition. Although pathogenic rare genetic variants are detected in around 20% of cases of ASD, no single factor is responsible for the vast majority of ASD cases or that explains their characteristic clinical heterogeneity. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that ASD susceptibility involves an interplay between genetic factors and environmental exposures. One such environmental exposure which has received significant attention in this regard is maternal immune activation (MIA) resulting from bacterial or viral infection during pregnancy. Reproducible rodent models of ASD are well-established whereby induction of MIA in pregnant dams, leads to offspring displaying neuroanatomical, functional, and behavioral changes analogous to those seen in ASD. Blockade of specific inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-17A during gestation remediates many of these observed behavioral effects, suggesting a causative or contributory role. Here, we review the growing body of animal and human-based evidence indicating that interleukin-17A may mediate the observed effects of MIA on neurodevelopmental outcomes in the offspring. This is particularly important given the current corona virus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection during pregnancy is a potent stimulator of the maternal immune response, however the long-term effects of maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection on neurodevelopmental outcomes is unclear. This underscores the importance of monitoring neurodevelopmental outcomes in children exposed to SARS-CoV-2-induced MIA during gestation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly disabling neurodevelopmental disorder, and the burden is high. Data on the burden of ASD are limited in China, especially in the southwest. Therefore, the aims of this study were to investigate the intervention status and burden of children with ASD in Southwest China. MATERIALS AND METHODS Families of children with ASD were recruited from hospitals, special education schools, and private rehabilitation centers; they participated in the survey and completed the questionnaire. Descriptive analysis was conducted on the questionnaire results, which included basic demographic characteristics, rehabilitation status, and burden. Multivariate analysis was used to analyze the association of basic family demographic characteristics, rehabilitation status, and costs of ASD. RESULTS A total of 231 families of children with ASD participated in this survey, and 78.35% (181/231) of the children with ASD were male. The mean age was 4.34 ± 2.09 years. A total of 55.84% (129/231) of the children with ASD had an intellectual disability. Only 46.32% (107/231) started receiving intervention within 1 month after diagnosis. The institutions for rehabilitation interventions for children with ASD were mainly tertiary hospitals (39.39%), special education schools (29.87%) and private rehabilitation institutions (21.64%). For a total of 42.86% (99/231) of the children with ASD, the duration of the intervention was less than 10 h per week. A total of 74.89% (173/231) of the children with ASD received a rehabilitation intervention at home. A total of 66.67% of the parents were satisfied with the treatment. The monthly cost of medical intervention for the patients of children with autism was 7,225 ± 474 RMB ($1,134 ± 74), and the non-medical intervention cost was 2,133 ± 107 RMB ($334 ± 17). The annual burden of patients with autism was 86,700 ± 5,688 RMB ($13,596 ± 892). The estimated total annual burden of ASD was 5.548 billion RMB ($870 million) in Guizhou province. CONCLUSION The results revealed that rehabilitation resources are limited and that the burden of ASD is high in Guizhou province; therefore, improving the rehabilitation status and easing the burden of children with ASD is urgent in these regions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE During the COVID-19 pandemic, face-to-face intervention services for families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) were limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an 8-week, online-delivered Project ImPACT program for children with ASD and their parents in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A pilot non-randomized study with a waitlist control group was conducted in 68 children with ASD and their parents in the Department of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics between April 15, 2020 and March 19, 2021. Participants were allocated to either the intervention (IG) or the waitlist group (WLG) according to their order of recruitment. Parents in the IG immediately received 8 weeks of the online-delivered Project ImPACT program, and the WLG received the same program with a delay when the IG had completed all sessions. Participants in both groups received treatment as usual during the research period. RESULTS The online-delivered Project ImPACT program significantly improved the parent-reported social communication skills of children with ASD. Furthermore, parent's involvement in the training program produced a collateral reduction in parenting stress and an increase in perceived competence in the parental role. Parents rated the program acceptable in terms of curriculum schedule, session content, homework assignments, and therapist feedback. CONCLUSIONS The 8-week, online-delivered Project ImPACT program is a feasible and effective social skill training program for families of children with ASD in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the methodological limitations, randomized controlled studies with larger sample sizes are suggested to provide more solid evidence.

Feasibility of a school-based mental health program implementation to improve the status of depression and quality of life of mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders in urban Bangladesh: MENTHOL study. Abstract
BACKGROUND We assessed the feasibility of implementing psychological counseling services (PCS) for mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) integrated within special education settings in urban Bangladesh. METHOD In two special education schools for ASD in Dhaka City, trained female psychologists screened mothers using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). PCS was administered to all the mothers irrespective of a diagnosis of depression. Mothers with a PHQ-9 score >4 who met criteria for a major depressive episode (MDE) based on the DSM-IV Structured Interview Axis I Disorders (SCID-I) were also administered skill-building training through monthly home visits to support ASD care. The level of depression was assessed by the Depression Measurement Scale (DMS), and quality of life (QoL) was measured by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of EQ5D5L scale before and after PCS. RESULT Among 188 mothers enrolled in the study, 81 (43%) received PCS, and 27.1% (22) had MDE. In the first month, 73 sessions were scheduled and 60 completed (85%). In the last month, 53 sessions were scheduled and 52 completed (98%). The mean DMS score decreased from 79.5 ± 23 to 60 ± 20 (p = 0.004), and DMS scores were significantly higher among mothers with MDE (97.8 ± 12.1 v. 69.9 ± 22.1; p < 0.001) compared to those without MDE (72.7 ± 22.6 v. 56.1 ± 18.1; p = 0.003). The mean VAS score improved from 70.3 ± 14.1 to 80.2 ± 13.3 (p = 0.001) between the first and the last session. Changes in DMS were negatively correlated with changes in VAS scores (β: -0.213, 95% CI 0.370 to -0.056). CONCLUSION Within special education schools for ASD in urban Bangladesh, it was feasible to administer an integrated program of PCS for mothers of children with ASD by trained psychologists who were able to screen and intervene to reduce their level of depression and improve their quality of life.

Abstract
Children with fragile X syndrome and William Beuren syndrome share several socio-communicative deficits. In both populations, around 30/35% of individuals meets criteria for autism spectrum disorder on gold standard instruments. Notwithstanding, few studies have explored feasibility and validity of therapy for socio-communicative deficits in individuals with these genetic conditions. In this study, we present preliminary data on a pilot RCT aimed to verify the effectiveness of cooperative parent-mediated therapy for socio-communicative deficits in a transdiagnostic perspective in a small sample of 12 participants. Our preliminary data showed that the experimental group had significant improvement in one socio-communicative skill (responsivity) and in clinical global impression, while the control group in an adaptive measure of socialization and word production. Implications of these results are then discussed.

Abstract
PROBLEM The aim of this study is to analyze the changes that NeuroPLAY, which is an intensive early intervention method for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ages of 12-42 months, has created in the play skills of the parents of children with ASD by using method strategies. METHODS The study cohort includes 91 children ages ranging from 18 to 42 months old. The study is designed for repetitive measurements performed pre- and post-intervention. Within the scope of the study, children's ASD symptoms were evaluated with the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and changes in the play skills of parents were evaluated using NeuroPLAY Parental Play Behavior Assessment Scale (NPPBAS). RESULTS The NPPBAS score at the beginning of the intervention was 12.55; repeated measurements (46.22 after 3 months, 45.95 after 6 months, and 48.53 after 12 months) were observed to increase core. The older age of the parents in the intervention program is associated with lower final NPPBAS scores. However, it was determined that the CARS score, which is an indicator of the autism spectrum, will decrease after intervention regardless of the parents' age. CONCLUSION The results showed that NeuroPLAY led to significant improvement in play behaviors of the parents.

Abstract
Parents raising children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) usually carry on their daily life under tremendous stress, but limited empirical research has been devoted to this population. It is known that parents' health status directly impacts therapeutic outcome of ASD children. As an important regulator in cardiovascular, nervous and immune systems, nitric oxide (NO) levels haven't been reported in parents of ASD children yet. In this study, we measured urine nitrite and nitrate from 43 ASD parents (ASD-P), and 43 healthy adults in the same range of age (Control) who didn't have any ASD descendants. Comparison between the ASD-P and Control groups showed that NO 2 - , NO 3 - , and NO 2 - / NO 3 - were all significantly lower in the ASD-P group. Analysis on the interaction effect of sex and group indicated that urine NO 3 - of mothers in ASD-P was lower than that in females of the Control group, but no significant difference was observed between males in both groups. It is for the first time that urine nitric oxide metabolites (nitrite, nitrate) levels were precisely reported to differentiate parents of autistic children from other adults without ASD descendants. This phenomenon suggests that parents (especially mothers) of autistic children might have experienced more mental and physical stressors, which led to decreased NO levels during metabolism. Further investigations are necessary to uncover the etiology of low urine NO among parents of autistic children.

Abstract
There has been increasing interest in parent-mediated interventions (PMIs) for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the effect of PMIs compared to no PMI for children with ASD aged 2-17 years. The primary outcome was adaptive functioning rated by a parent or clinician. The secondary outcomes were long-term adaptive functioning rated by the parents, adverse events, core symptoms of ASD, disruptive behavior, parental well-being, quality of life of the child rated by the parents and anxiety. The MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Embase, and CINAHL databases were searched in March 2020. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool was used to rate the individual studies, and the certainty in the evidence was evaluated using GRADE. We identified 30 relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs), including 1,934 participants. A clinically relevant effect of PMIs on parent-rated adaptive functioning was found with a low certainty of evidence [Standard mean difference (SMD): 0.28 (95% CI: -0.01, 0.57)] on Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS), whereas no clinically relevant effect was seen for clinician-rated functional level, with a very low certainty of evidence [SMD on Clinical Global Impressions (CGI)-severity scale: SMD -0.45 [95% CI: -0.87, -0.03)]. PMIs may slightly improve clinician-rated autism core symptoms [SMD: -0.35 (95% CI: -0.71, 0.02)]. Additionally, no effect of PMIs on parent-rated core symptoms of ASD, parental well-being or adverse effects was identified, all with a low certainty of evidence. There was a moderate certainty of evidence for a clinically relevant effect on disruptive behavior [SMD: 0.55 (95% Cl: 0.36, 0.74)]. The certainty in the evidence was downgraded due to serious risk of bias, lack of blinding, and serious risk of imprecision due to few participants included in meta-analyses. The present findings suggest that clinicians may consider introducing PMIs to children with ASD, but more high-quality RCTs are needed because the effects are not well-established, and the results are likely to change with future studies. The protocol for the systematic review is registered at the Danish Health Authority website (www.sst.dk).

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Insomnia is highly prevalent in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), yet little research exists on sleep treatment access, utilization, and provision in this population. This study explores barriers and facilitators to access, use, and provision of treatment for sleep problems as experienced by parents of children with NDDs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and health care professionals who work with children with these conditions. METHOD Transcripts from online focus groups and interviews, conducted separately with parents of children with NDDs (n = 43) and health care professionals (n = 44), were qualitatively analyzed using content analysis for key themes. RESULTS Barriers included limited access to/availability of treatment, lack of knowledge/training, NDD-specific factors (e.g., symptoms, medications, and comorbidities), parent factors (e.g., capacity to implement treatment, exhaustion), and the challenging, intensive nature of sleep treatment. Facilitators included positive beliefs and attitudes, education, support, and ability to modify treatments for NDD symptoms. Barriers and facilitators were similar across all four NDDs. CONCLUSIONS Results highlight a need for more education about sleep in NDDs and to develop accessible interventions, as well as the potential of a transdiagnostic approach to sleep treatment in this population.

Abstract
Introduction Deficits in joint attention are commonly seen in children with autism spectrum disorder. Research examining joint attention in autism spectrum disorder commonly uses two broad strategies to cue and measure joint attention: behavioral observation and eye tracking. These strategies trade off prioritizing ecological validity vs. gaze measurement accuracy, with a focus on one sacrificing the other. The purpose of this case study was to develop a method to accurately measure gaze position while maintaining an ecologically valid dyadic interaction. Methods A child with autism spectrum disorder completed two developmentally appropriate tabletop activities. Each activity was guided by a different occupational therapist who purposefully used a different interaction style with the child. Mobile eye trackers worn by both the child and the therapist recorded the dyadic interactions. Data collection included audio and video recording of interactive behaviors, eye movements and visual fixations in regions of shared interest. Results Differences were detected in gaze use and interactive joint attention behaviors between the therapists working with the child and within the child’s respective dyadic interactions. Conclusions The proof of concept method maintained both ecological validity and measurement accuracy of therapist–child joint attention. This method has promise to be scaled for larger studies.

Abstract
Increasing emphasis is placed on the provision of family-centred interventions when children have developmental disabilities with the aim of supporting parents as well as fostering the child’s development. Although various instruments have been developed to assess parental health, stress and quality of life, these are rarely used by practitioners because of the burden they place on informants. A brief measure, rooted in the concept of subjective wellbeing, was developed and tested with over 400 parents of children with ASD participating in a home-based intervention. Consisting of eight items and using a 10-point rating scale, the measure was readily understood and accepted by parents. The items contributed to one main factor that confirmed the measure’s construct validity. The internal reliability of the scale was reasonable, and there was promising evidence of test–retest reliability. There is evidence too for criterion validity through a significant relationship with a measure of parental mental health. The summary score derived from the measure was sensitive to the predicted differences on wellbeing scores by parent characteristics as well as to features of their engagement with the intervention. This brief assessment tool could help practitioners to evidence the impact of their family-centred interventions.

Abstract
Young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) present with a broad range of spoken language abilities, as well as delays in precursor skills such as gesture production and joint attention skills. While standardized assessments describe language strengths, the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales (CSBS-DP) is a particularly robust measure as it additionally characterizes precise aspects of social communication. This study provides a unique contribution by assessing the interactional effects of CSBS-DP Social Composite performance with early language samples on later language outcomes. Our results indicate that multiple social communication elements significantly interact with early spoken language to predict later language. Our findings also highlight the transactional relationship between early spoken vocabulary and social communication skills that bolster language development growth.
