Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep health has wide-ranging consequences for general health. The year 2020 marked the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the world, an event that introduced dramatic disruptions to daily life. Studies conducted during the first wave of the pandemic reported a decrease in sleep quality but also an increase in sleep duration, which contradicts the simultaneous decrease in sleep duration reported in Canada. However, prior studies were not representative of the Canadian population. To assess pandemic-induced health disruptions, we investigated sleep health trajectories and health correlates during the first wave of COVID-19 in a longitudinal nationally representative sample of Canadians. We aimed (1) to determine the trajectories of sleep duration and sleep quality, (2) to identify health factors associated with unstable sleep trajectories, and (3) to explore associations between sleep trajectory groups. METHODS A nationally representative sample of 2,246 individuals residing in Canada was surveyed 6 times between April and July 2020. Participants reported on their sleep and health-related factors (e.g., sociological and demographic factors). We first used latent class growth analysis to identify sleep trajectories. We then used multinomial logistic regression models to determine the relationships between health-related predictors and trajectory groups. Finally, we used joint trajectory analysis to explore the relationships between sleep duration trajectories and sleep quality trajectories. RESULTS We identified four constant sleep quality trajectories (6.7%, 37.1%, 45.5%, and 10.7% of the sample). We identified two sleep duration trajectories, one of stable shortshort and stable sleep (33.9% of the sample), and one of long and decreasing (-2.32 min/2 weeks) sleep (66.1% of the sample). Living with someone predicted longer and decreasing sleep duration. Being 25 or older was associated with a lower likelihood of belonging to the long and decreasing sleep duration trajectory. There was a 98.9% likelihood of belonging to the long and decreasing sleep duration trajectory for those belonging to the higher sleep quality trajectory. CONCLUSIONS In our study, we found no convincing evidence that sleep health indicators deteriorated during the first wave of COVID-19 in Canada. The overall stability of sleep suggests that sleep is likely governed by factors that remained stable.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION While sleep and activity levels are impacted by childbirth, these changes before and after cesarean delivery are under explored. Few studies have characterized sleep and physical activity before and after cesarean delivery using objective measures. The aim of this study was to characterize sleep and activity before and after cesarean delivery using wrist-worn Actigraphy. Secondary aims were to explore associations between physical activity and sleep following scheduled cesarean delivery. METHODS Following IRB approval, ASA 2 and 3 patients aged 18-50 years, term gestation, singleton pregnancy, undergoing scheduled cesarean delivery under neuraxial anesthesia were invited to participate. Consented patients continuously wore an Actigraph GT9X device on their non-dominant wrist from 7 days prior to scheduled cesarean delivery until 28 days post-delivery. Sleep metrics included quality, duration, disruption and efficiency. Physical activity metrics included average daily moderate to vigorous physical activity bouts, metabolic equivalents (METs) and caloric expenditure. Granular data regarding sleep and activity were recorded and analyzed based on established algorithms and trend analysis using methodology previously described. RESULTS Among the 38 recruited patients, analyzable actigraphy data were available in 21 patients. Trend analysis from day -7 (pre-delivery) to 28 (post-delivery) demonstrated that most variables did not differ significantly, indicating that at month 1, most activity and sleeping variables returned to third trimester levels. Some metrics of sleep improved in the first week postpartum compared to third trimester, however, total sleep time worsened and did not recover by day 28 compared to the third trimester durations. Physical activity levels dropped significantly immediately after delivery, then improved from day 0 to 28 post-surgery. CONCLUSIONS Most sleep and physical activity metrics return to third trimester levels by 1 month postpartum. Several sleep metrics such as sleep efficiency and awakening after sleep were better in the first postpartum week than in the third trimester of pregnancy, but total sleep continues to be significantly impacted at day 28 postpartum. Physical activity returns to third trimester levels by one month postpartum. Future studies are needed to identify risk factors for worse physical recovery and sleep following cesarean delivery and to compare metrics following different peripartum complications.

Abstract
We conducted the current systematic review and meta-analysis to critically review and synthesize available evidence regarding the association between sleep duration, sleep quality, and chronotype with the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) among the general population using observational studies. Online databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science, were searched from the earliest available date until December 2024. We enrolled 62 studies with a total sample size of 328,493. The mean age and BMI of the participants in the enrolled studies ranged from 6.1 to 74.7 years and 18.1-32.1 kg/m2. Individuals with sufficient sleep duration (OR: 1.39; 95 % CI, 1.04, 1.85; P = 0.030; I2 = 97.89 %, PQ-test < 0.001), good-quality sleep (OR: 1.38; 95 % CI, 1.10, 1.73; P < 0.001; I2 = 93.83 %, PQ-test < 0.001), and earlier chronotype (OR: 1.74; 95 % CI, 1.21, 2.50; P = 0.002; I2 = 89.72 %, PQ-test < 0.001) had significantly increased odds of high MedDiet scores, compared to those with insufficient sleep duration, poor-quality sleep, and later chronotype, respectively. Our study revealed that sleep duration, sleep quality, and chronotype are lifestyle-related factors linked to MedDiet. However, more longitudinal studies and clinical trials are needed to investigate causality, mediating factors, and underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the relationship between postpartum physical activity and maternal sleep. DESIGN Systematic review with random-effects meta-analysis. Online databases were searched through 20 January 2025. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Studies of all designs (except case studies and reviews) in all languages were eligible if they contained information on the population (individuals up to 1 year post partum); interventions/exposures (including subjective or objective measures of frequency, intensity, duration, volume or type of exercise, alone ('exercise only') or in combination with other intervention components (eg, dietary; 'exercise+co-intervention')); comparator (low volume or no physical activity) and outcomes: sleep duration, quality, latency, efficiency, disturbance and fatigue. RESULTS 12 unique studies (n=3096) from nine countries were included. Moderate certainty of evidence showed that exercise-only interventions were associated with a greater improvement in sleep quality (five randomised controlled trials (RCTs), n=375, standardised mean difference (SMD) -0.44, 95% CI -0.79 to -0.09) compared with no exercise. High certainty of evidence showed that exercise interventions were associated with a greater improvement in daytime/general fatigue (six RCTs, n=535, SMD -0.56, 95% CI -1.06 to -0.05) compared with no exercise. No effect was found for sleep duration, latency, efficiency, or disturbance. CONCLUSION Postpartum physical activity improves maternal sleep quality and daytime/general fatigue.

Abstract
The effects of sleep duration and quality on physical frailty may differ. We examined the association between sleep duration/quality and frailty phenotype according to frailty components. This cross-sectional study analyzed 848 community-dwelling Japanese adults aged 65-75 years (mean age 70.8 yrs, 50.1% women) without long-term care needs. We classified the participants by their sleep duration: short-, middle-, and long-sleep groups. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and divided into PSQI ≤ 5, 6-8, and ≥ 9 groups. Physical frailty was operationalized with the Fried phenotype. A logistic regression model was used to compute the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CIs) for frailty status outcomes. The prevalence of frailty was 4.7%. The ORs for the presence of frailty in the long-sleep group was 8.50 (95%CI: 2.82-25.62) compared to the middle-sleep group, and the PSQI ≥ 9 group was 2.81 (95%CI: 1.08-7.33) compared to the PSQI ≤ 5 group. Short sleep and poor sleep quality were associated with exhaustion; long sleep was associated with low physical activity. The duration and quality of sleep may thus have different effects on frailty components. The possible causal relationship between sleep duration/quality and frailty merits further investigation.

Abstract
Crime impacts both the immediate victims and has indirect effects on the community. This study examined associations between daily neighborhood crime and actigraphy-assessed sleep outcomes using multilevel modeling. Data were from a longitudinal (14-day) study of 288 adolescents (Mage = 15.27; 70.8% girls, 29.2% boys; 38.9% Asian, 36.8% Hispanic or Latinx, 20.5% Black or African American) in the New York City area in 2014. Residential addresses were geocoded to examine police-recorded crime. Daily neighborhood violent crime was associated with nightly sleep efficiency, but not duration, bedtime, or wake time. Non-violent crime was not associated with any sleep outcomes. This suggests that neighborhood violent crimes are detrimental to the quality, but not quantity or timing, of sleep that adolescents receive that evening.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a large, growing, and difficult-to-treat problem. It has been associated with poor sleep, which has a relationship of mutual exacerbation with pain. These interrelationships have prompted interest in how pain catastrophizing (pain-related distortions of cognition), interacts with pain and sleep quality and quantity in those with OUD. METHODS Participants with chronic pain and OUD (N = 105) completed a battery of self-report assessments. A subset of these participants (N = 63) wore an actigraphy watch for 2 weeks. Six mediation models were evaluated in this cross-sectional study interrelating pain intensity, pain catastrophizing, and sleep in previously published work were run 3 times each, measuring global sleep quality through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, self-reported total sleep time (TST) through Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and objective TST through actigraphy. RESULTS Three models yielded statistically significant results: (1) the relationship between global sleep quality and pain intensity mediated by pain catastrophizing (z = -2.00, P = 0.045), (2) the relationship between objective TST and pain intensity mediated by pain catastrophizing (z = -2.15, P = 0.032), and (3) the relationship between pain intensity and objective TST mediated by pain catastrophizing (z = -2.36, P = 0.018). CONCLUSION Pain catastrophizing is a significant mediator of the relationship between the mutually exacerbating factors of sleep quality and pain intensity, and is, therefore, an important treatment target in this population. In addition, objective TST and self-reported TST were only moderately correlated and behaved differently in mediation models, suggesting that more research is needed to understand the relationship between perceived sleep quality and sleep quantity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The positive effects of physical activity (PA) on sleep are widely promoted by public health organizations and supported by abundant empirical evidence. Nonetheless, there remains a dearth of studies investigating the association between daytime PA and nighttime sleep among non-urban and nonindustrial populations that habitually engage in PA as part of their subsistence strategy. METHODS Here, we examined the bidirectional relationship between PA and sleep. We also looked at age, gender, and occupation-level differences in moderate-to-vigorous-intensity PA (MVPA), low-intensity PA (LPA), and sedentary activity durations among Basotho and Xhoxa agropastoralists residing in rural villages in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. We analyzed activity and sleep data collected from 113 individuals using MotionWatch actigraphy wristwatches across three field seasons (7111 individual days). RESULTS Percentage daily total MVPA decreased with age, though older participants maintained low activity levels and did not suffer from poorer sleep compared to younger participants. Herders spent more percentage of their day in higher-intensity activity than non-herders. Overall, women had greater daily percentage MVPA and lower percentage sedentary activity than men. Durations of total MVPA and LPA decreased total sleep time (TST) and improved sleep quality (increased sleep efficiency (SE), decreased fragmentation, and decreased percentage wake after sleep onset). Daytime PA measures were not affected by sleep duration or quality from the previous night. CONCLUSIONS Among this group of habitually active agropastoralists, low-to-moderate-intensity PA durations consistently predicted higher sleep quality. Our findings showed that sleep quality was more strongly affected by PA than sleep duration.

Abstract
The prevalence of child obesity is a worldwide public health concern. Good sleep quality is associated with reduced adiposity in older children and adults. More research is needed in younger children to help mitigate risk of obesity. In addition, we aimed to address limitations found in previous studies such as relying on subjective measures, or only including one parameter of sleep, using only one body composition parameter, and/or not adjusting for relevant covariates. This cross-sectional study examined baseline data from 48 toddlers aged 1 to <3 years enrolled in the Guelph Family Health Study. Nighttime sleep duration (total sleep time; TST), sleep timing (sleep onset and offset time), and sleep quality (wake after sleep onset; WASO) were measured using 24 h accelerometry for 7 consecutive days. Height, body weight, and waist circumference were measured, and BMI z-scores and waist-to-height ratios were calculated. Percent fat mass and fat mass index were calculated using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Linear regression models were used to estimate associations between sleep parameters and body composition outcomes, with adjustments for relevant covariates (age, sex, household income, screen time, energy intake, physical activity, household stress). Nighttime sleep onset time was positively associated with waist-to-height ratio (β ̂ = 0.004, p = 0.04). Sleep offset time was negatively associated with BMI z-score (β ̂ = -0.48, p = 0.02). TST and WASO were not associated with any body composition outcome. Building healthy sleep habits may prevent childhood obesity; longitudinal research in a larger sample is warranted. Abstract
Background Sleep health focuses on those measurable characteristics of sleep that are most clearly associated with physical, mental, and neurobehavioral well-being, and not necessarily the absence of sleep disorder. Sleep health is characterised by subjective satisfaction, appropriate timing, adequate duration, high efficiency, and sustained alertness during waking hours. Adequate and restful sleep is particularly crucial for medical students, who face unique challenges due to the demanding nature of their academic and clinical responsibilities. There is limited data on sleep health among medical students in Nigeria. Objectives This research study investigated the pattern of sleep health among medical students in Abakaliki Nigeria. Methods This cross-sectional observational study was undertaken among the medical students of 2 public institutions in Abakaliki Nigeria from 16th to 23rd June 2023. Results Out of the 288 medical students (males- 53.1 %, females- 46.9 %), good sleep health was recorded in 6.6 %. The mean SATED sleep score was 4.9 ± 1.7 (male- 4.9 ± 1.8, female- 4.9 ± 1.6) (p-value = 1) and it was significantly lower among the final-year students. Age difference, sex difference, and presence of chronic headache did not significantly affect the SATED sleep score. The mean sleep duration was 6.1 ± 1.5 hours (male- 6.1 ± 1.6, female- 6.0 ± 1.4). Sleep duration (54.5 %) had the best rating while sleep efficiency (44 %) had the lowest rating among the assessed sleep domains. Conclusion Sleep health is poor among medical students in Abakaliki Nigeria and significantly poorer among final-year medical students.

Abstract
Sleep plays an essential role in physiology, allowing the brain and body to restore itself. Despite its critical role, our understanding of the underlying processes in the sleeping human brain is still limited. Sleep comprises several distinct stages with varying depths and temporal compositions. Cerebral blood flow (CBF), which delivers essential nutrients and oxygen to the brain, varies across brain regions throughout these sleep stages, reflecting changes in neuronal function and regulation. This systematic review and meta-analysis assesses global and regional CBF across sleep stages. We included, appraised, and summarized all 38 published sleep studies on CBF in healthy humans that were not or only slightly (<24 h) sleep deprived. Our main findings are that CBF varies with sleep stage and depth, being generally lowest in NREM sleep and highest in REM sleep. These changes appear to stem from sleep stage-specific regional brain activities that serve particular functions, such as alterations in consciousness and emotional processing.

Abstract
Objectives: Eating disorders (EDs) have emerged as a growing public health concern. However, the role of sleep in this context remains underexplored. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the associations between sleep parameters and chronotype with ED risk in a sample of university students in Spain. Methods: ED risk was assessed via the Sick, Control, One stone, Fat, Food Questionnaire, and sleep quality was assessed via the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Other sleep parameters and chronotypes were self-reported. Sociodemographic, body composition, lifestyle, and depressive symptom data were collected. Logistic and linear regression models adjusted for the main confounders were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the study associations. Results: A total of 403 students (70.2% female) aged 18 to 30 years participated in the study. Those reporting poor sleep quality (OR = 1.85, 95% CI 1.08-3.17, p = 0.025) and ≤6 h of night-time sleep duration (OR = 4.14, 95% CI 2.00-8.57, p < 0.01) were more likely to be at risk of EDs in the adjusted analyses. The association between night-time sleep duration and the risk of ED did not remain significant when we adjusted for sleep quality. In addition, an evening chronotype was associated with an increased risk of EDs (OR = 1.68, 95% CI 1.07-2.66, p = 0.039) only before adjustment for confounders. Conclusions: Among university students, poorer sleep quality was cross-sectionally associated with EDs. Future prospective studies are needed to examine whether promoting sleep quality may serve as an effective strategy for preventing the risk of EDs.

Abstract
Study Objectives The aims of this review were to identify existing national surveillance systems monitoring one or more domains of sleep health in adults, and to describe the specific sleep health indicators used. Methods We systematically searched the gray and peer-reviewed literature for routinely conducted cross-sectional and longitudinal nationally representative health surveys that included the assessment of at least one domain of sleep health. The methodology involved: (1) targeted searches of the websites of national and international health agencies and statistics departments for 199 countries, (2) country-specific customized internet searches, and (3) country-specific electronic database searches of PubMed. Results A total of 19 762 records were identified from both the gray and peer-reviewed literature. Sleep health surveillance at the national level was conducted by 51 countries (25.6%) across 69 national health surveys. Sleep quality (96.1% of countries that surveilled sleep) was the most frequently assessed followed by sleep duration (27.5%), sleep medication use (25.5%), sleep disorders (17.6%), daytime alertness (15.7%), sleep satisfaction (15.7%), and sleep timing (7.8%). Additionally, 34.8% of the surveys utilized multiple sleep health indicators. Conclusions This study identified three significant gaps in the coverage of sleep health within national surveillance systems. Limited population sleep data in low- and middle-income countries, inconsistent use of sleep-related items in surveys and questionnaires, and substantial variability in the definitions of sleep health indicators. Advocacy for the inclusion of sleep health within national surveillance systems may be warranted given the important role sleep plays in public health.

Abstract
AIMS Sleep problems constitute a significant public health problem due to their high prevalence and impact on mental health and health behaviours, with major consequences for individuals and society. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between sleep problems (duration and quality), mental health and health behaviours. METHODS Cross-sectional data was derived from the 2021 health survey 'How are you?' from the Central Denmark Region. The study population was a stratified random sample of 33,925 respondents aged 16 years or older. We used logistic regression models to analyse the associations between sleep problems and indicators of mental health and health behaviour. The models were adjusted for sex, age, educational attainment, labour market attachment, cohabitation, and indicators of mental health and health behaviour. RESULTS A prevalence of around 10% for both short- and long sleep duration and poor sleep quality was found. All were associated with poor mental health-related quality of life, depression, stress, perceived stressors and obesity. In addition, short sleep duration was associated with daily smoking, and long sleep duration was associated with physical inactivity and daily smoking. CONCLUSIONS Our findings revealed a stronger association between sleep problems and mental health indicators in comparison to health behaviours. We found that sleep duration and sleep quality in broad terms were associated with similar variables within mental health and health behaviour. These findings underline the importance of adopting a comprehensive approach to addressing sleep problems in the context of health promotion, disease prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.

Abstract
AIMS Few studies investigate whether psychosocial factors (social isolation, social support, trait anger, and depressive symptoms) are associated with cardiovascular health, and none with the American Heart Association's new definition of cardiovascular health, Life's Essential 8 (LE8). Therefore, we assessed the cross-sectional associations of psychosocial factors with Life's Essential 8 and individual components of Life's Essential 8. METHODS We included 11,311 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities cohort participants (58% females; 23% Black; mean age 57 (standard deviation: 6) years) who attended Visit 2 (1990-1992) in this secondary data analysis using cross-sectional data from the ARIC cohort study. Life's Essential 8 components included diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure, sleep quality, body mass index, blood lipids, blood glucose, and blood pressure. Life's Essential 8 was scored per the American Heart Association definition (0-100 range); higher scores indicate better cardiovascular health. Associations of categories (high, moderate, and low) of each psychosocial factor with continuous Life's Essential 8 score and individual Life's Essential 8 components were assessed using multivariable linear regressions. RESULTS 11% of participants had high Life's Essential 8 scores (80-100), while 67% and 22% had moderate (50-79) and low Life's Essential 8 scores (0-49) respectively. Poor scores on psychosocial factor assessments were associated with lower Life's Essential 8 scores, with the largest magnitude of association for categories of depressive symptoms (low β = Ref.; moderate β = -3.1, (95% confidence interval: -3.7, -2.5; high β = -8.2 (95% confidence interval: -8.8, -7.5)). Most psychosocial factors were associated with Life's Essential 8 scores for diet, physical activity, nicotine, and sleep, but psychosocial factors were not associated with body mass index, blood lipids, blood glucose, or blood pressure. CONCLUSION Less favorable measures of psychosocial health were associated with lower Life's Essential 8 scores compared better measures of psychosocial health among middle-aged males and females.

Abstract
Sleep is essential for optimal functioning and health. Interconnected to multiple biological, psychological and socio-environmental factors (i.e., biopsychosocial factors), the multidimensional nature of sleep is rarely capitalized on in research. Here, we deployed a data-driven approach to identify sleep-biopsychosocial profiles that linked self-reported sleep patterns to inter-individual variability in health, cognition, and lifestyle factors in 770 healthy young adults. We uncovered five profiles, including two profiles reflecting general psychopathology associated with either reports of general poor sleep or an absence of sleep complaints (i.e., sleep resilience) respectively. The three other profiles were driven by the use of sleep aids and social satisfaction, sleep duration and cognitive performance, and sleep disturbance linked to cognition and mental health. Furthermore, identified sleep-biopsychosocial profiles displayed unique patterns of brain network organization. In particular, somatomotor network connectivity alterations were involved in the relationships between sleep and biopsychosocial factors. These profiles can potentially untangle the interplay between individuals' variability in sleep, health, cognition and lifestyle - equipping research and clinical settings to better support individual's well-being.

Abstract
Background In modern society, achieving high-quality sleep is increasingly challenging. We conducted a study to explore the potential benefits of daytime physical activity and balneotherapy, including mud application and thermal-water bathing, on sleep quality. Methods To assess daytime physical activity and sleep parameters, we actigraphically monitored 127 healthy participants (34.6% male, average age 64.61 ± 0.89 years) during a one-week stay at a spa resort, where they received mud application and thermal-water bathings. Results Participants were divided into three groups based on the timing of mud application. Those receiving mud application before 8:30 a.m. tended to have shorter sleep durations compared to those with later application, especially if it occurred before 7:45 a.m. However, mud application did not significantly affect sleep quality. Three-way ANCOVA revealed a significant effect of daytime physical activity on delta Sleep Efficiency, but post-hoc tests were insignificant. Furthermore, analyzing the duration of daily thermal-water bathings, individuals bathing for over 75 min per day experienced a noteworthy improvement in sleep quality, particularly in terms of delta Sleep Efficiency (2.15 ± 0.9% vs. -0.34 ± 0.31%, p = 0.007). Conclusion Our findings suggest that extended thermal-water bathing may enhance objective aspects of sleep quality. Since balneotherapy is mainly prescribed for individuals with musculoskeletal pathologies or psychological disorders, these findings may encourage doctors to recommend bathing in thermal water also to healthy subjects. Future researchers need to investigate the role of daytime physical activity in depth.

Abstract
A significant proportion of the world's population suffers from insomnia, a disorder characterized by complications in initiating and maintaining sleep. Many medications used to treat insomnia target the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmitter system. However, these substances, such as benzodiazepines, induce significant adverse consequences, including dependence and memory impairment, after prolonged use. Thus, current studies are aimed at developing therapeutic hypnotics derived from natural sources that may cause less severe side effects. Heukharang is a variety of lettuce from Korea that was discovered to contain sleep-promoting compounds. Therefore, we investigated the potential effects of sub-chronic administration of Heukharang extract (FSD-LS) on sleep behavior (pentobarbital-induced sleeping test), brain wave activity and sleep architecture (electroencephalography), and physiological behavior (open-field test and rota-rod) in mice, along with radioligand binding assays (GABAA, adenosine A1 and A2A receptors). We found that FSD-LS prolonged the total sleep duration and reduced the onset time of sleep, and enhanced delta wave power and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep duration, all indicating persistent sleep-enhancing effects. FSD-LS lacked adverse effects on the spontaneous locomotor activity and motor coordination of mice, unlike diazepam. Pharmacological blocking using caffeine and bicuculline supported the possible involvement of adenosine receptors in the sleep-promoting effects of FSD-LS, with partial contribution from GABA receptor activity. Overall, our study recommends FSD-LS as a potential source for the development of sleep-aiding therapeutics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether antepartum hospitalization was associated with differences in sleep duration or disrupted sleep patterns. METHODS This was a prospective cohort study with enrollment of pregnant people aged 18-55 years with singleton gestations at 16 weeks of gestation or more between 2021 and 2022. Each enrolled antepartum patient was matched by gestational age to outpatients recruited from obstetric clinics at the same institution. Participants responded to the ISI (Insomnia Severity Index) and wore actigraph accelerometer watches for up to 7 days. The primary outcome was total sleep duration per 24 hours. Secondary outcomes included sleep efficiency (time asleep/time in bed), ISI score, clinical insomnia (ISI score higher than 15), short sleep duration (less than 300 minutes/24 hours), wakefulness after sleep onset, number of awakenings, and sleep fragmentation index. Outcomes were evaluated with multivariable generalized estimating equations adjusted for body mass index (BMI), sleep aid use, and insurance type, accounting for gestational age correlations. An interaction term assessed the joint effects of time and inpatient status. RESULTS Overall 58 participants were included: 18 inpatients and 40 outpatients. Inpatients had significantly lower total sleep duration than outpatients (mean 4.4 hours [SD 1.6 hours] inpatient vs 5.2 hours [SD 1.5 hours] outpatient, adjusted β=-1.1, 95% CI, -1.8 to -0.3, P =.01). Awakenings (10.1 inpatient vs 13.8, P =.01) and wakefulness after sleep onset (28.3 inpatient vs 35.5 outpatient, P =.03) were lower among inpatients. There were no differences in the other sleep outcomes, and no interaction was detected for time in the study and inpatient status. Inpatients were more likely to use sleep aids (39.9% vs 12.5%, P =.03). CONCLUSION Hospitalized pregnant patients slept about 1 hour/day less than outpatients. Fewer awakenings and reduced wakefulness after sleep onset among inpatients may reflect increased use of sleep aids in hospitalized patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep quality is affected by a plethora of different factors, although its relationship with chronic diseases is still unclear. This study explored perceived sleep quality and its associated determinants among the adult population of Malta. Study Design: A cross-sectional study. METHODS An anonymous online survey was distributed through social media targeting adults residing in Malta. Data pertaining to socio-demographic, medical history, lifestyle, well-being, sleep, and daytime sleepiness were gathered, and descriptive, univariant, and multiple binary logistic regression modelling analyses were performed. RESULTS A total of 855 adults responded, out of whom 35.09% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 31.90, 38.41) reported sleep difficulties, especially females (81.33%; 95% CI: 76.36, 85.49), while 65.33% (95% CI: 59.61, 70.65) reported suffering from chronic disease(s). Sleep problems were positively associated with multimorbidity (odds ratio [OR]: 2.17; 95% CI: 1.38, 3.40; P=0.001), sleeping<6 hours (OR: 3.79; 95% CI: 1.54, 9.30; P=0.040), and the presence of moderate anxiety symptoms (OR: 1.99; 95% CI: 1.10, 3.59; P=0.020). They were also related to the presence of mild (OR: 2.25; 95% CI: 1.46, 3.45; P=0.001), moderate (OR: 2.40; 95% CI: 1.24, 4.64; P=0.010), and moderately severe (OR: 15.35; 95% CI: 4.54, 31.86; P=0.001) depressive symptoms after adjusting for confounders. CONCLUSION Chronic conditions, including anxiety and depression, along with short sleep duration, appear to contribute to poor sleep quality in Malta. A multifaceted approach is required to deal with the issue holistically and safeguard the health of current and future generations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to (1) examine the clustering of energy balance-related behaviours (EBRB) and (2) investigate whether EBRB clusters, temperament and hair cortisol concentration (HCC) associate with overweight. DESIGN We assessed food consumption using food records, screen time (ST) using sedentary behaviour diaries, sleep consistency and temperament (negative affectivity, surgency, effortful control) using questionnaires and HCC using hair samples. Accelerometers were used to assess physical activity (PA) intensities, sleep duration and sleep efficiency. Researchers measured each child's weight and height. We used finite mixture models to identify EBRB clusters and multilevel logistic regression models to examine the associations between EBRB clusters, temperament, HCC and overweight. SETTING The cross-sectional DAGIS survey, data collected in 2015-2016. PARTICIPANTS Finnish 3-6-year-olds (n 864) recruited through preschools. RESULTS One-third of the participants were categorised into the cluster labelled 'Unhealthy diet, excessive screen time', characterised by unhealthy dietary choices (e.g. greater consumption of high-fat, high-sugar dairy products) and longer ST. Two-thirds were categorised into the second cluster, labelled 'Healthy diet, moderate screen time'. PA and sleep were irrelevant for clustering. Higher negative affectivity and lower effortful control associated with the 'Unhealthy diet, excessive screen time' cluster. EBRB clusters and HCC did not associate with overweight, but surgency was positively associated with overweight (OR = 1·63, 95 % CI 1·17, 2·25). CONCLUSIONS Of the EBRB, food consumption and ST seem to associate. As temperament associates with EBRB clusters and overweight, tailored support acknowledging the child's temperament could be profitable in maintaining a healthy weight.

Abstract
The nature of the relationship between sleep problems and dementia remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between sleep measures and dementia in older adults (≥ 65) using data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) and further investigated the causal association in Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. In total of 7,223 individuals, 5.7 % developed dementia (1.7 % Alzheimer's disease (AD)) within an average of 8 (± 2.9) years. Cox regression models and MR were employed. Long sleep duration (>8 h) was associated with 64 % increased risk of incident dementia and 2-fold high risk of AD compared to ideal sleep duration (7-8 h). This association was particularly evident in older-older adults (≥70 years) and those who consumed alcohol. Short sleep duration (<7 h) was associated with lower risk of incident dementia among older-older but higher risk among younger-older adults. Sleep disturbances and perceived sleep quality were not associated with dementia or AD. The MR study did not reveal causal associations between sleep duration and dementia. These findings suggest that self-reported short sleep in younger-older and long sleep in older-older adults and those with frequent alcohol consumption are associated with dementia. Early detection of these sleep patterns may help identify individuals at higher dementia risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the association between sleep quality and all-cause mortality in community-dwelling adults living in rural Ecuador. METHODS Individuals aged ≥40years enrolled in the prospective population-based Three Villages Study cohort were included. Sleep quality was assessed by means of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Study participants were evaluated at baseline and at every annual door-to-door survey until they remained enrolled in the study. Mixed models Poisson regression for repeated Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index determinations and multivariate Cox-proportional hazards models were fitted to estimate mortality risk according to sleep quality. RESULTS Analysis included 1494 individuals (mean age: 56.6 ± 12.5years; 56% women) followed for a median of 6.3 ± 3.3years. At baseline, 978 (65%) individuals had good sleep quality and 516 (35%) had poor sleep quality. The effects of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores changing over time on mortality was confounded by the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on both. One hundred ninety-five individuals (13%) died during the follow-up, resulting in a crude mortality rate of 1.58 per 100 person years (95% C.I.: 1.27-1.88) for individuals with good sleep quality, and 3.18 (95% C.I.: 2.53-3.82) for those with poor sleep quality at baseline. A multivariate Cox-proportional hazards model showed that individuals with poor sleep quality at baseline were 1.38 times (95% C.I.: 1.02-1.85) more likely to die compared to those with good sleep quality; in this model, increased age, poor physical activity, and high fasting glucose remained significant. CONCLUSIONS Poor sleep quality is associated with increased mortality risk among middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atypical temporal work patterns such as working longer than the standard 35-40 h/ week, weekend working, and nonstandard work schedules (i.e. outside of the typical 9-5, including but not restricted to shiftwork) are increasingly prevalent in the UK. Aside from occupation-specific studies, little is known about the effects of these atypical temporal work patterns on sleep among workers in the UK, even though poor sleep has been linked to adverse health problems, lower workplace productivity, and economic costs. METHOD We used regression models to investigate associations between three types of atypical temporal work patterns (long and short weekly work hours, weekend working, and nonstandard schedules) and sleep duration and disturbance using data from over 25,000 employed men and women from 2012-2014 and/or 2015-2017 in the UK Household Longitudinal Study, adjusting for potential confounders and psychosocial work factors. RESULTS We found that relative to a standard 35-40 h/week, working 55 h/week or more was related to short sleep (less than 7 h/night) and sleep disturbance. Working most/all weekends compared to non-weekends was associated with short sleep, long sleep (more than 8 h/night), and sleep disturbance, as was working nonstandard schedules relative to standard schedules (fixed day-time schedules). Further analyses suggested some gender differences. CONCLUSIONS These results should prompt employers and policymakers to recognise the need for rest and recovery, consider how the timing and scheduling of work might be improved to better support workers' health and productivity, and consider appropriate compensation for anyone required to work atypical temporal work patterns.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep duration has been associated with depression. However, mean regression, such as linear regression or logistic regression, may not capture relationships that occur mainly in the tails of outcome distribution. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between sleep duration and depression along the entire distribution of depression using quantile regression approach. METHODS This study included 55,954 adults aged 18 to 80 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (N = 34,156) and the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (N = 21,798). The coefficients corresponding to cross-group differences in PHQ-9 scores were estimated when comparing short or long sleep duration with normal sleep duration on deciles of PHQ-9 score distribution. RESULTS At lower quantiles, either short or long sleep duration was not associated with depression. At higher quantiles, the association of both short and long sleep duration with depression became much more pronounced. Compared with normal sleep duration, short and long sleep duration were associated with increases of 1.34 (95 % CI: 1.16, 1.51) and 0.28 (95 % CI: 0.04, 0.52) in PHQ-9 scores at the 50th quantile, while the corresponding increases were 3.27 (95 % CI: 2.83, 3.72) and 1.65 (95 % CI: 0.86, 2.45) at the 90th quantile, respectively. We also found that the magnitude of association between short sleep duration and depression was stronger among females and individuals with chronic diseases. CONCLUSIONS The beneficial effect of sufficient sleep in decreasing depression severity may be more evident among individuals with severe depression. Further studies could explore whether these heterogeneous associations can be generalized to populations with different characteristics.

Abstract
Purpose The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on mental health worldwide, with depression and sleep problems among the most common issues experienced by many individuals. Depression can lead to sleep problems, which can increase the risk of developing depressive symptoms. However, it is unclear which United States (US) sub-population was most affected by depression and sleep problems during the pandemic. Methods We conducted a secondary analysis using self-reported data from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), focusing on adults aged 18 years and above (n=29,763). We utilized self-reported responses to questions about prescription medication and frequency of depressive feelings to determine participants' depression status. Appropriate weights were applied to account for the sampling design of the surveys. Our analysis involved descriptive statistics and chi-squared tests to compare sociodemographic, clinical, behavioral, and sleep-related characteristics between US adults with and without depression. Additionally, logistic regression was used to examine the associations between sleep duration, sleep quality and depression. Results The overall prevalence of depression in our sample was 44.4%. It were higher in certain demographic groups, including younger adults (18-39 years, 47.7%), non-Hispanic whites (47.9%), females (50.1%), those at the lower income bracket (52.2%), those with no college or degree (48.7%) uninsured individuals (45.2%), and those reporting poor general health (71.9%). Individuals with depression had a 12% increased odds of experiencing short sleep (aOR: 1.12, 95% CI:1.04-1.20, p<0.001), 34% increased odds of experiencing long sleep (aOR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.20-1.50, p < 0.001) and more than 2.5 fold increased odds of reporting poor sleep quality (aOR:2.57, 95% CI: 2.40-2.78; p<0.0001). In the multivariate analysis, all variables (sex, race/ethnicity, education, health insurance coverage, marital status, general health status and use of sleep medications, smoking and alcohol use status) were significantly predictors of poor sleep quality, with the exceptions of age and family income. Conclusion The findings emphasize the need to address sleep health in treating depression, especially during times of public health crises.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Researchers have recently posited the importance of sleep as a predictor of cyberbullying perpetration. We aimed to fill several theoretical gaps in the literature. First, most of the research focuses on sleep quality and not duration. Second, most of the studies are correlational, limiting causal claims. Third, few studies have tested the theoretical mediators (anger, hostility, and self-control) in the relationship between sleep (quality and duration) and cyberbullying. METHODS We employed short-term three-wave longitudinal study with US emerging adults (N = 182). At each wave participants completed measures of cyberbullying perpetration, anger, hostility, self-control, sleep quality, and sleep duration. RESULTS Findings from our longitudinal path model showed that Wave 2 anger was the only significant mediator between Wave 1 sleep duration (not quality) and Wave 3 cyberbullying. CONCLUSIONS We supported past research focused on the mediating role of anger in the relationship between sleep and cyberbullying, and theory that explicates the importance of mediators. Moreover, we contributed to this literature by employing a longitudinal design, assessing mediators, focusing on sleep duration and quality, and using an emerging adult population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Observational studies had demonstrated a link between sleep disturbances and cognitive decline. Here, we aimed to investigate the causal association between genetically predicted sleep traits and cognitive impairment using Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS Using strict criteria, we selected genetic variants from European ancestry Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) from the Sleep Disorders Knowledge Portal and UK Biobank as instrumental variables for several sleep traits, including insomnia, sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, daytime napping, and chronotype. Summary statistics related to cognitive impairment were derived from five different GWAS, including the Social Science Genetic Association Consortium. The role of self-reported sleep trait phenotypes in the etiology of cognitive impairment was explored using inverse-variance weighted (IVW) tests, MR-Egger tests, and weighted medians, and sensitivity analyses were conducted to ensure robustness. RESULTS In the main IVW analysis, sleep duration (reaction time: β = -0.05, 95% CI -0.07 to -0.04, p = 1.93×10-12 ), daytime sleepiness (average cortical thickness: β = -0.12, 95% CI -0.22 to -0.02, p = 0.023), and daytime napping (fluid intelligence: β = -0.47, 95% CI -0.87 to -0.07, p = 0.021; hippocampal volume in Alzheimer's disease: β = -0.99, 95% CI -1.64 to -0.35, p = 0.002) were significantly negatively correlated with cognitive performance. However, any effects of insomnia and chronotype on cognitive impairment were not determined. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlighted that focusing on sleep behaviors or distinct sleep patterns-particularly sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, and daytime napping, was a promising approach for preventing cognitive impairment. This study also shed light on risk factors for and potential early markers of cognitive impairment risk factors.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Growing evidence linked inflammation with sleep. This study aimed to evaluate the associations and causal effects of sleep traits including insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and sleep duration (short: <7 h; normal: 7-9 h; long: ≥9 h), with levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukins. METHODS Standard procedures of quantitative analysis were applied to estimate the expression differences for each protein in compared groups. Then, a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to explore their causal relationships with published genome-wide association study summary statistics. The inverse-variance weighted was used as the primary method, followed by several complementary approaches as sensitivity analyses. RESULTS A total of 44 publications with 51 879 participants were included in the quantitative analysis. Our results showed that the levels of CRP, interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and TNF-α were higher from 0.36 to 0.58 (after standardization) in insomnia compared with controls, while there was no significant difference between participants with EDS and controls. Besides, there was a U/J-shaped expression of CRP and IL-6 with sleep durations. In MR analysis, the primary results demonstrated the causal effects of CRP on sleep duration (estimate: 0.017; 95% confidence intervals [CI], [0.003, 0.031]) and short sleep duration (estimate: -0.006; 95% CI, [-0.011, -0.001]). Also, IL-6 was found to be associated with long sleep duration (estimate: 0.006; 95% CI, [0.000, 0.013]). These results were consistent in sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS There are high inflammatory profiles in insomnia and extremes of sleep duration. Meanwhile, elevated CRP and IL-6 have causal effects on longer sleep duration. Further studies can focus on related upstream and downstream mechanisms.

Abstract
Many postpartum women experience postpartum symptoms which often occur in clusters (i.e., three or more co-occurring symptoms that are related to each other). To date, research has focused on individual symptoms, which limits our understanding of how postpartum symptom clusters manifest and influence health. This secondary analysis used the Community and Child Health Network study data (N = 1784). No patient or public directly participated or contributed to the current analysis. Guided by the Symptom Management Theory, latent class analysis was performed to identify subgroups of postpartum women with different symptom experiences using observed variables at 6 months postpartum: anxiety (MINI-anxiety), general stress (PSS-10), posttraumatic stress (PCL-C), postpartum depression (EPDS), sleep disturbance (PSQI-sleep disturbance), and sleep duration (PSQI-sleep duration). Bivariate and multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between subgroups and (a) individual characteristics and (b) long-term depressive symptoms (CES-D-9) and well-being at 18 and/or 24 months postpartum. Five subgroups were selected that had better-fit indices, entropy, and interpretability. Subgroups were labeled as (1) Minimum overall, (2) Mild-moderate overall, (3) Moderate-high sleep symptoms, (4) High psychological symptoms, and (5) High overall. After adjusting for covariates, postpartum women in Subgroups 4 and 5 had higher CES-D-9 scores at 18 and 24 months and lower well-being scores at 24 months. More postpartum women in Subgroups 4 and 5 experienced a history of depression or unemployment. Clinicians should provide targeted interventions for postpartum women in high-symptom subgroups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to examine the within-person relationships between sleep duration and next-day stress and affect in the daily life of individuals with T1D. METHODS Study participants were recruited in the Function and Emotion in Everyday Life with Type 1 Diabetes (FEEL-T1D) study. Sleep duration was derived by synthesizing objective (actigraphy) and self-report measures. General and diabetes-specific stress and positive and negative affect were measured using ecological momentary assessment. Multilevel regression was used to examine the within-person relationships between sleep duration and next-day stress and affect. Cross-level interactions were used to explore whether gender and baseline depression and anxiety moderated these within-person relationships. RESULTS Adults with T1D (n = 166) completed measurements for 14 days. The average age was 41.0 years, and 91 participants (54.8%) were female. The average sleep duration was 7.3 h (SD = 1.2 h). Longer sleep was significantly associated with lower general stress (p < 0.001) but not diabetes-specific stress (p = 0.18) on the next day. There were significant within-person associations of longer sleep with lower levels on next-day negative affect (overall, p = 0.002, disappoint, p = 0.05; sad, p = 0.05; tense, p < 0.001; upset, p = 0.008; anxious, p = 0.04). There were no significant associations with positive affect. Examination of the interaction effects did not reveal significant differential relationships for men and women and for individuals with and without depression or anxiety at baseline. CONCLUSION Findings from this study suggest optimizing sleep duration as an important interventional target for better managing general stress and improving daily emotional wellbeing of individuals with T1D.

Abstract
Sleep quality is recognized as one of the main factors that affect human health. Thus, several studies have been encouraged to analyze features, such as stress level and female menopause, which are directly related to sleep quality. While these works rely mostly on reductionism as the philosophical framework, we approach this problem from a holist perspective, using a model with 10 features that could provide more reliable explanations for inductive conclusions. We demonstrate the principles of this hypothesis by analyzing the data regarding the day before a sleep episode of 1736 volunteers. This analysis shows, for example, the performance of each feature when they are jointly used along prediction tasks. Moreover, we evaluate the readability and accuracy of explanations, given as description logic sentences and based on a knowledge representation that considers the 10 features as elements that compose a sleep quality ontological definition.

Abstract
In their systematic review and meta-analysis, Meneo and colleagues document distinct substance-sleep effects reported by young adults (ages 18-30) across multidimensional sleep health and different substances used in the naturalistic environment, including alarming rates of self-medication for sleep aid. Key innovations of Meneo et al.'s review include (a) a multidimensional approach to defining sleep health and (b) robust inclusion of various substances commonly used in young adults. Although future research will be essential to clarifying transdiagnostic risk mechanisms, interplay of co-used substances, and the role of expectancies in risk processes, the developing literature reviewed herein may inform much-needed clinical recommendations. This work by Meneo et al should prompt an emphasis on approaching young adult substance use and self-medication through a harm reduction lens, highlighting recommendations for integrated behavioral sleep treatment tailored to stage of change using motivational interviewing.

Abstract
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is one of the most common sleep disorders. A mandibular advancement device (MAD) can be used to manage primary snoring and OSA cases. It is mostly indicated in cases with mild to moderate OSA. This case reports shows the successful management of severe OSA using MAD. A 34-year-old male presented to the orthodontic clinic with a diagnosis of severe OSA, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of 71 events per hour with symptoms of loud snoring, witnessed gasping, morning headache, and excessive daytime sleepiness. The case was managed using MAD to position the lower jaw in a forward position during sleep with 7 mm advancement. Progress sleep study results showed that the AHI reached normal levels, with only two hypopnea events per hour and a complete resolution of apnea episodes. The patient's symptoms subsided after using MADs. This case report documents that severe OSA can be managed with MAD in suitable cases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A growing number of Canadian studies have examined the link between sleep and mental health. This research builds upon that work by investigating associations of sleep duration and quality with positive mental health (PMH) and mental illness and suicidal ideation (MI/SI) outcomes among youth and adults from threeCanadian provinces (i.e. Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan). METHODS Using cross-sectional data from respondents 12 years and older (n = 18 683) who were asked questions on their sleep in the 2015 Canadian Community Health Survey - Annual Component, we conducted unadjusted and adjusted logistic regressionswith self-reported measures of sleep duration and sleep quality as independent variables and a range of PMH (e.g. high self-rated mental health) and MI/SI indicators (e.g. mood disorder diagnosis) as dependent variables. Analyses were conducted of allcomplete cases and also stratified by sex and age group. RESULTS Good sleep quality was associated with higher odds of PMH indicators (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.52-4.24) and lower odds of MI/SI indicators (aOR: 0.23- 0.47); associations remained significant when analyses were stratified. Meeting sleep duration recommendations was positively associated with PMH indicators (aOR: 1.27- 1.56) and negatively associated with MI/SI indicators (aOR: 0.41-0.80), but some associations did not remain significant when stratified. CONCLUSION This study provides support for associations between sleep duration and quality and indicators of PMH and MI/SI. Findings can inform future research and surveillance efforts that monitor sleep behaviours and indicators of PMH and MI/SI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep quality is an important dimension of sleep health. There are few studies on the relationship between residential environment and sleep quality in China. We validated the connection between them and explored the moderating role of spatial-geographic characteristics and the role of emotional stress and somatic function as mediators. METHODS Using survey data collected by the Chinese General Social Survey in 2021, 2717 respondents were included in the analysis. First, OLS regression was used for baseline analysis. Second, a generalized ordered logit model was used to analyze the more precise correlations between residential environmental health and sleep quality. Finally, the mediating role of emotional stress and somatic function was explored using the KHB method. RESULTS In the baseline analysis, both the positive correlations of residential natural environmental health and residential health resources on people's sleep quality were tested. Further analysis revealed that the correlation of natural environmental health was more about protecting people from poor sleep quality (having "good" and "very good" sleep quality). The residential health resources correlated with whether people reported very good sleep quality. Regional development disparities played a negative moderating role in the relationship between residential health resources and sleep quality. Also, the mediating role of emotional stress and somatic function were supported, and the mediating role of somatic function was higher in proportion. CONCLUSION Sleep quality was positively correlated with residential environmental health; the economic development gap between regions played a moderating role; and the correlation was generated by people's emotional stress and somatic function. In the development of public health policy, it is necessary to actively address various environmental issues, provide convenient health facilities in living spaces, and bolster the policy inclinations of less developed areas.

Abstract
Background
Sleep quality has significant impacts on many aspects of quality of life. Therefore, identifying the association of sleep quality with that quality of life domains could lead to deeper insights for social policymakers and professionals to enhance their understanding of the lives of Abu Dhabi working adults. This research focuses on sleep quality among working people in Abu Dhabi. The direct and indirect associations of sleep quality with various quality-of-life domains such as income and housing, physical and mental health, sport and activities, eating habits and obesity, work-life balance, online hours, and social connections are investigated and discussed.
Methods
Data were drawn from 36,515 full-time employees in both public, and private sectors, obtained from the third Abu Dhabi Quality of Life (QoL) survey aimed to cover all community members using online platforms. Informed by international research on sleep quality, preliminary investigation using correlation analysis and simple regression identified many well-being variables deemed necessary for inclusion in the path model. Path analysis was then performed.
Results
The final path model produced excellent fit measures. The significant variables directly associated with sleep quality included sleeping hours, social connection, satisfaction with income, satisfaction with residence, subjective physical and mental health, income satisfaction, satisfaction with the surrounding environment, frequency of eating healthy food, work-life balance, and online time. In addition, most variables recorded an indirect association to sleep quality through subjective health.
Conclusions
The importance of multidimensional linkages between many well-being factors influencing sleep quality and subjective health is underscored.

Abstract
When entering the university setting, poor sleep quality is reportedly prevalent among students and has been linked to a range of adverse health outcomes, including reduced academic performance. Moreover, determinants of sleep quality are not yet fully understood. This study was designed to (1) assess the prevalence of poor sleep quality and (2) identify determinants of sleep quality in German university students. In total, 1,684 undergraduate and graduate students (50.6% female, mean age 22.87 ± 3.15 years) from multiple academic disciplines completed a cross-sectional online survey assessing socio-demographic, health, and study-related indicators and sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). In our sample, 820 (48.7%) met the PSQI cut-off score (>5) for poor sleep quality. Multiple regression analysis showed that older age, being a business student, lower subjective social status, poorer self-rated health, stress, exhaustion, and poor academic performance significantly predicted poor sleep quality. Our findings document a high prevalence of poor sleep quality among university students and suggest that business students, especially, might be exposed to a greater risk for poor sleep quality. Furthermore, the results of this study are valuable for academic staff to develop tailored interventions to promote healthy sleep-in university students.

Abstract
Background Sleep is important for maintaining the metabolic processes in the body, and hence, disruption in sleep leads to metabolic derangement and accelerated atherosclerosis. The effect of sleep duration on subclinical atherosclerosis has been examined in several studies; however, data regarding sleep quality is lacking. The study aimed to assess the association between sleep quality and carotid intima-media thickness among healthy young doctors. Materials and Methods This was an observational cross-sectional study among 110 healthy young resident doctors. Anthropometric data were recorded and morning fasting venous blood samples were collected to assess fasting blood sugar, lipid profile and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c). Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Berlin questionnaire assessed subjective sleep quality and risk for obstructive sleep apnea, respectively. Carotid ultrasonography was done to detect the intima-media thickness. Results Average age of the participants was 26.45 (±1.43) years, and 51.8% were male. Self-reported poor sleep quality was found in 54.5%. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) was increased among 44.5% of participants. In the multivariate analysis, only poor sleep quality appeared to be associated with higher CIMT (P < 0.001, OR = 7.4; 95% CI = 2.70-20.32). When different components of sleep quality was analyzed through multivariate logistic regression, subjective sleep onset latency (>30 min), sleep efficiency (<85%) and sleep disturbance was found to be associated with the increased CIMT. Conclusion Poor sleep quality, especially prolonged sleep onset latency, poor sleep efficiency, and sleep disturbance are associated with increased carotid intima-media thickness among healthy young adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insufficient sleep is common among teachers and is associated with diverse health risks. This study aimed to predict intention and sleep duration by applying the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and to examine the effectiveness of an implementation-intention intervention to improve sleep duration and quality. METHOD Sixty-nine teachers (M = 36.8 years, SD = 10.4) were assigned to an active control group (CG) or intervention group (IG). At baseline, TPB variables were assessed and participants of the IG received instructions to develop implementation intentions to reach the goal of sleeping 8 h on average. During a 3-week intervention period, all participants wore an activity tracker (Fitbit Charge HR) to measure sleep duration and kept diaries to assess sleep quality, physical activity, and stress. After 1 month, a 1-week follow-up, including a booster for the IG, was conducted. RESULTS Forty-two percent of variance in sleep duration were explained by control variables, past behavior, perceived behavioral control, and intention. Mixed ANOVAS with baseline covariates found a large main effect with longer sleep duration in the IG. A time x group interaction suggested that only the IG slept significantly longer in the follow-up period compared to the intervention period. For sleep quality, a medium-sized main effect for study group was found and a time x group interaction indicated higher sleep quality in the IG for week 3 and the follow-up. CONCLUSION The TPB was effective in predicting sleep intention and duration. Implementation intentions accompanied by daily monitoring and a booster appear to be promising for improving sleep.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Identifying health behaviors associated with adverse events following immunization (AEFI) could identify intervention targets for AEFI prevention. METHODS University employees receiving an influenza vaccination (n = 1301) completed a series of online surveys for health behaviors including sleep, exercise, dietary intake, and smoking habits, and emotional state (baseline), and for indications of AEFI (three days post-vaccination) and influenza-like illness (ILI) symptoms (fortnightly follow-up for 4 months). RESULTS 29.9% of participants reported an AEFI and 46.0% reported experiencing ILI during follow-up. Multivariate logistic regression revealed usual sleep duration was associated with AEFI (odds ratio 1.20, 95% confidence interval 1.03-1.41), increasing with each hour of sleep. ILI was associated with reporting AEFI (1.70, 1.24-2.33), increasing BMI (1.03, 1.00-1.06) and survey response frequency (1.13, 1.04-1.22), and decreased with better usual sleep quality (0.96, 0.92-1.00) and with increasing age (0.98, 0.96-1.00). Sex stratification revealed no significant predictors of AEFI for either sex; in women, experiencing AEFI increased likelihood of ILI (1.88, 1.25-2.85) and in men, survey completion frequency increased ILI likelihood (1.19, 1.05-1.36). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests modifying health behaviors would not alter AEFI risk and reactogenicity may signal weaker immunogenicity but confirmation through objective measures is warranted.

Physical inactivity amplifies the negative association between sleep quality and depressive symptoms. Prev Med 2022; 164:107233. Abstract
Poor sleep quality and physical inactivity are known risk factors for depressive symptoms. Yet, whether these factors differently contribute to depressive symptoms and whether they interact with one another remains unclear. Here, we examined how sleep quality and physical activity influence depressive symptoms in 79,274 adults 50 years of age or older (52.4% women) from the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) study. Sleep quality (poor vs. good), physical activity (inactive vs. active), and depressive symptoms (0 to 12 score) were repeatedly collected (7 waves of data collection) between 2004 and 2017. Results showed that sleep quality and physical activity were associated with depressive symptoms. Specifically, participants with poorer sleep quality reported more depressive symptoms than participants with better sleep quality (b = 1.85, 95% CI = 1.83-1.86, p < .001). Likewise, compared to physically active participants, physically inactive participants reported more depressive symptoms (b = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.42-0.45, p < .001). Moreover, sleep quality and physical activity showed an interactive association with depressive symptoms (b = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.13-0.20, p < .001). The negative association between poor sleep quality and higher depressive symptoms was stronger in physically inactive than active participants. These findings suggest that, in adults 50 years of age or older, both poor sleep quality and physical inactivity are related to an increase in depressive symptoms. Moreover, the detrimental association between poor sleep quality and depressive symptoms is amplified in physically inactive individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sleep is a multi-dimensional health behavior associated with elevated risk of substance use. This is the first study to utilize a latent class approach to characterize sleep health across multiple dimensions and across time from late adolescence to emerging adulthood, and to examine associations with alcohol and cannabis use trajectories. METHODS The sample included 2995 emerging adults (mean ages = 18 to 24 years across six waves of data collection; 54% female) who provided data on sleep dimensions (quality, duration, and social jetlag) and frequency and consequences of alcohol and cannabis use. Longitudinal latent class analysis (LLCA) models characterized participants according to the three sleep dimensions. Latent growth models examined trajectories of frequency and consequences of alcohol or cannabis use over time among emergent sleep classes, with and without controlling for covariates. RESULTS LLCA models identified four sleep classes: good sleepers (n = 451; 15.2%); untroubled poor sleepers (n = 1024; 34.2%); troubled, moderately good sleepers (n = 1056; 35.3%); and suboptimal sleepers (n = 460; 15.4%). Good sleepers reported significantly lower levels of alcohol or cannabis use and consequences, and less of an increase in alcohol consequences as compared to suboptimal sleepers. CONCLUSIONS Persistent poor sleep health was associated with higher levels of alcohol and cannabis use and consequences, and greater increases in alcohol-related consequences during the transition from late adolescence to emerging adulthood. Findings have important clinical implications, highlighting that addressing multi-dimensional sleep health may be an important, novel target of intervention to reduce substance use frequency and consequences.

Abstract
AIMS Previous studies investigated the associations between sleep traits and cardiac diseases, but the evidence for the causal inferences was unclear. This study aimed to explore the causal relationship between sleep and cardiac diseases by virtue of Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS AND RESULTS Summary-level data for exposure variables (sleep duration, chronotype, and insomnia) and outcome variables (ischaemic heart disease, atrial fibrillation, myocardial infarction, and heart failure) were derived from UK Biobank. Data from the FinnGen consortium was used as a robustness check. In MR analysis, the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was applied to infer causality between exposure and outcome. MR-Egger regression was used to identify pleiotropy, and MR-PRESSO outlier test was used to remove the pleiotropy of the genetic instruments. Based on UK Biobank, MR analysis suggested that sleep duration was weakly associated with atrial fibrillation (OR = 0.9999, 95% CI: 0.9998-0.9999) and ischaemic heart disease (OR = 0.9997, 95% CI: 0.9995-0.9998). Insomnia was associated with ischaemic heart disease (OR = 1.0117, 95% CI: 1.0051-1.0183) and myocardial infarction (OR = 1.0049, 95% CI: 1.0019-1.0079). No associations were found between chronotype and cardiac diseases (P > 0.05). We did not find pleiotropy except for insomnia with ischaemic heart disease and myocardial infarction using MR-Egger regression, and MR-PRESSO analysis consistent with IVW. Finally, we obtained the same direction as with UK Biobank using the FinnGen data. CONCLUSIONS Sleep duration and insomnia might be the potential causal risk factors of cardiac diseases. As the OR was small, these associations are probably not clinically relevant. Further validation studies are needed.

Abstract
Body dissatisfaction is a common condition that poses health behavior risks, such as the use of maladaptive eating styles instead of adaptive eating styles. Few studies have simultaneously examined both adaptive and maladaptive eating styles and their association with body dissatisfaction in a comprehensive manner. To address this gap, this study examined how body dissatisfaction is related to an array of adaptive and maladaptive eating styles, weight-related behaviors, and health status as well as the associations of health status, BMI, and weight-related behaviors with body dissatisfaction in 261 young adult women. Maladaptive eating styles, such as emotional eating, tended to rise in tandem with body dissatisfaction, differing significantly among body-dissatisfaction levels with medium to large effect sizes. For adaptive eating styles, as body dissatisfaction increased, compensatory restraint increased, intuitive eating declined, and mindful eating did not differ. Weight-related dietary, physical activity, and sleep behaviors did not differ by body dissatisfaction level. BMI increased and health status decreased as body dissatisfaction increased. Binary logistic regression revealed those who were body-dissatisfied had significantly lower health status, higher BMIs, and did not differ on weight-related behaviors. Study findings suggest strategies to improve health-promotion interventions aiming to increase body satisfaction.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Prospectively examine the association between sleep restriction, perceived sleep quality (PSQ) and upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). METHODS In 1318 military recruits (68% males) self-reported sleep was assessed at the beginning and end of a 12-week training course. Sleep restriction was defined as an individualized reduction in sleep duration of ≥2 hours/night compared with civilian life. URTIs were retrieved from medical records. RESULTS On commencing training, approximately half of recruits were sleep restricted (52%; 2.1 ± 1.6 h); despite the sleep debt, 58% of recruits with sleep restriction reported good PSQ. Regression adjusted for covariates showed that recruits commencing training with sleep restriction were more likely to suffer URTI during the course (OR = 2.93, 95% CI 1.29-6.69, p = .011). Moderation analysis showed this finding was driven by poor PSQ (B = -1.12, SE 0.50, p = .023), as no significant association between sleep restriction and URTI was observed in recruits reporting good PSQ, despite a similar magnitude of sleep restriction during training. Associations remained in the population completing training, accounting for loss to follow-up. Recruits reporting poor PSQ when healthy at the start and end of training were more susceptible to URTI (OR = 3.16, 95% CI 1.31-7.61, p = .010, vs good PSQ). CONCLUSION Good perceived sleep quality was associated with protection against the raised risk of respiratory infection during sleep restriction. Studies should determine whether improvements in sleep quality arising from behavioral sleep interventions translate to reduced respiratory infection during sleep restriction.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to investigate the association of α-linolenic acid (ALA; 18:3 ω-3) dietary intake with very short sleep duration (<5 h) in adults based on the CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Methods Multinomial logistic regression was used to explore the association of ALA intake with very short sleep. To make the estimation more robust, bootstrap methods of 1,000 replications were performed. Rolling window method was used to investigate the trend of the odds ratios of very short sleep with age. A Kruskal-Wallis test was applied to estimate the differences in the ORs of very short sleep between genders and different age groups. Results Compared with the first tertile, the ORs of very short sleep and the corresponding 95% CIs for the second and the third tertile of dietary ALA intake in males were 0.618 (0.612, 0.624) and 0.544 (0.538, 0.551), respectively, and in females were 0.575 (0.612, 0.624) and 0.432 (0.427, 0.437). In most cases, the differences between different ages were more significant than those between different sexes. Men's very short sleep odds ratios for the second tertile of ALA intake increased linearly with age before 60. Conclusions The risk of a very short sleep duration was negatively related to the dietary intake of ALA. The effect of ALA on very short sleep is significantly different among groups of different genders and ages.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Emotional problems such as anxiety and low mood have been associated with sleep problems in children. The study's objectives were to 1) assess the association between sleep duration and internalizing symptoms (anxiety and low mood) in children aged 5-12 years (y), and 2) evaluate whether insufficient sleep according to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) guidelines is associated with internalizing symptoms. METHODS A cross-sectional study of N =796 children aged 5-12y, recruited from primary care physicians' offices in Toronto, Canada was conducted through the TARGet Kids! research network. Using linear regression, we investigated 1) the cross-sectional association between parent reported 24-hour sleep duration (hours) and parent reported symptoms using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), controlling for child age, sex, family income, maternal education, family composition, and standardized body-mass index (zBMI). The analysis was repeated using insufficient sleep per NSF guideline as the independent variable. RESULTS Sleep duration was inversely associated with internalizing symptoms, B estimate = -0.33 (95%CI -0.57, -0.07), p=0.012. Twenty-eight (14%) children aged 5 y, and 36 (6%) of those aged 6-12y, experienced insufficient sleep. There was a trend toward association between insufficient sleep and internalizing symptoms, B estimate = 0.64 (-0.09, 1.38), p=0.086. CONCLUSION The relationship between insufficient sleep and internalizing symptoms among children requires further elucidation. Children who show internalizing symptoms may benefit from interventions supporting sleep.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep duration may influence risk for sarcopenia but studies on this topic are scarce, especially from low and- middle-income countries (LMICs). Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the association between sleep duration and sarcopenia among adults aged ≥ 65 years from five LMICs (China, Ghana, India, Russia, South Africa). METHODS Cross-sectional, community-based data from the WHO study on global ageing and adult health (SAGE) were analysed. Sarcopenia was defined as having low skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and weak handgrip strength, while severe sarcopenia was defined as having low SMM, weak handgrip strength, and slow gait speed. Self-reported sleep duration in the past two nights were averaged and classified as ≤ 6, > 6 to ≤ 9, and ≥ 9 h/day. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted. RESULTS Data on 13,210 adults aged ≥ 65 years [mean (SD) age 72.6 (11.3) years; 55.0% females] were analyzed. In the overall sample, compared to > 6 to ≤ 9 h/day of sleep duration, > 9 h/day was associated with 1.70 (95% CI 1.15-2.51) and 1.75 (95% CI 1.08-2.84) times higher odds for sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia, respectively. No significant associations were observed among males, but associations were particularly pronounced among females [i.e., OR = 2.19 (95% CI 1.26-3.81) for sarcopenia, and OR = 2.26 (95% CI 1.20-4.23) for severe sarcopenia]. CONCLUSIONS Long sleep duration was associated with an increased odds of sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia in LMICs, particularly in females. Future studies should investigate whether addressing long sleep duration among females can lead to lower risk for sarcopenia onset in LMICs.
