Abstract
Recently, as concerns about petrochemical-derived polymers increase, interest in biopolymer-based materials is increasing. Undoubtedly, biopolymers are a better alternative to solve the problem of synthetic polymer-based plastics for packaging purposes. There are various types of biopolymers in nature, and mostly polysaccharides are used in this regard. Carrageenan is a hydrophilic polysaccharide extracted from red algae and has recently attracted great interest in the development of food packaging films. Carrageenan is known for its excellent film-forming properties, high compatibility and good carrier properties. Carrageenan is readily available and low cost, making it a good candidate as a polymer matrix base material for active and intelligent food packaging films. The carrageenan-based packaging film lacks mechanical, barrier, and functional properties. Thus, the physical and functional properties of carrageenan-based films can be enhanced by blending this biopolymer with functional compounds and nanofillers. Various types of bioactive ingredients, such as nanoparticles, natural extracts, colorants, and essential oils, have been incorporated into the carrageenan-based film. Carrageenan-based functional packaging film was found to be useful for extending the shelf life of packaged foods and tracking spoilage. Recently, there has been plenty of research work published on the potential of carrageenan-based packaging film. Therefore, this review discusses recent advances in carrageenan-based films for applications in food packaging. The preparation and properties of carrageenan-based packaging films were discussed, as well as their application in real-time food packaging. The latest discussion on the potential of carrageenan as an alternative to traditionally used synthetic plastics may be helpful for further research in this field.

Abstract
Clubroot, caused by the obligate parasite Plasmodiophora brassicae, is one of the most important diseases of brassicas. The antagonistic bacterium Paenibacillus polymyxa ZF129 can suppress clubroot while its effectiveness is often unstable. To control clubroot more effectively, the macrobeads for controlled release of ZF129 were prepared using microencapsulation technology. Macrobeads with various ratios of chitosan (2 % w/w): carrageenan (0.3 % w/v) were prepared by an ionotropic gelation method and the bacteria ZF129 was loaded into macrobeads. The 1:1 chitosan: carrageenan showed the maximum swelling ratio (634 %), and the maximum survival rate (61.52 ± 1.12 %) after freeze-drying. Fourier transform infrared revealed the electrostatic interactions between chitosan and carrageenan. The macrobeads can efficiently release ZF129 strains into phosphate buffer solution and reach equilibrium in 48 h. The maximum number of bacteria cells to be released in the soil was observed after 25-30 days. The control efficacy of ZF129 macrobeads (chitosan: carrageenan, 1:1) and ZF129 culture against clubroot disease was 76.33 ± 3.65 % and 59.76 ± 4.43 % in greenhouse experiments, respectively and the control efficacy was calculated as 60.74 ± 5.00 % for ZF129 macrobeads and 40.94 ± 4.05 % for ZF129 culture under field experiments, respectively. The ZF129 macrobeads had significant growth-promoting effects on pak choi and Chinese cabbage. The encapsulation method described in this study is a prudent approach toward efficient biopesticides utilization with reduced environmental implications.

Abstract
Lactoferrin (LF) is a thermally sensitive iron-binding globular glycoprotein. Heat treatment can induce its denaturation and aggregation and thus affect its functional activity. In this study, carrageenan (CG), xanthan gum (XG) and locust bean gum (LBG), allowed to apply in infant food, were used to form protein-polysaccharide complexes to improve the thermal stability of LF. Meanwhile, in vitro simulated infant digestion and absorption properties of LF were also estimated. The results showed that the complexes formed by CG and XG with LF (LF-CG and LF-XG) could significantly inhibit the loss of α-helix structure of LF against heating. LF-CG and LF-LBG could protect LF from digestion in simulated infant gastric fluid and slow down the degradation of LF under the simulated intestinal conditions. Besides, LF, LF-CG and LF-XG showed no adverse effects on the growth of Caco-2 cells in the LF concentration range of 10-300 μg/mL, and LF-XG exhibited better beneficial to improve the cell uptake of the digestive product than the other protein-polysaccharides at the LF concentration of 100 µg/mL. This study may provide a reference for the enhancement of thermal processing stability of LF and development infant food ingredient with high nutrients absorption efficiency in the gastrointestinal environment in the future.

Abstract
Due to their excellent emulsification, biocompatibility, and biological activity, proteins are widely used as microcapsule wall materials for encapsulating drugs, natural bioactive substances, essential oils, probiotics, etc. In this review, we summarize the protein-based microcapsules, discussing the types of proteins utilized in microcapsule wall materials, the preparation process, and the main factors that influence their properties. Additionally, we conclude with examples of the vital role of protein-based microcapsules in advancing the food industry from primary processing to deep processing and their potential applications in the biomedical, chemical, and textile industries. However, the low stability and controllability of protein wall materials lead to degraded performance and quality of microcapsules. Protein complexes with polysaccharides or modifications to proteins are often used to improve the thermal instability, pH sensitivity, encapsulation efficiency and antioxidant capacity of microcapsules. In addition, factors such as wall material composition, wall material ratio, the ratio of core to wall material, pH, and preparation method all play critical roles in the preparation and performance of microcapsules. The application area and scope of protein-based microcapsules can be further expanded by optimizing the preparation process and studying the microcapsule release mechanism and control strategy.

Abstract
Polysaccharides constitute over 90% of the carbohydrate mass in nature, which makes them a promising feedstock for manufacturing sustainable materials. Polysaccharide particles (PSPs) are used as effective scavengers, carriers of chemical and biological cargos, and building blocks for the fabrication of macroscopic materials. The biocompatibility and degradability of PSPs are advantageous for their uses as biomaterials with more environmental friendliness. This review highlights the progresses in PSP applications as advanced functional materials, by describing PSP extraction, preparation, and surface functionalization with a variety of functional groups, polymers, nanoparticles, and biologically active species. This review also outlines the fabrication of PSP-derived macroscopic materials, as well as their applications in soft robotics, sensing, scavenging, water harvesting, drug delivery, and bioengineering. The paper is concluded with an outlook providing perspectives in the development and applications of PSP-derived materials.

Abstract
Microcapsules were always used as functional material carriers for targeted delivery and meanwhile offering protection. However, microcapsule wall materials with specific properties were required, which makes the choice of wall material a key factor. In our previous study, a highly branched rhamnogalacturonan I rich (RG-I-rich) pectin was extracted from citrus canning processing water, which showed good gelling properties and binding ability, indicating it could be a potential microcapsule wall material. In the present study, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum GDMCC 1.140 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus were encapsulated by RG-I-rich pectin with embedding efficiencies of about 65 %. The environmental tolerance effect was evaluated under four different environmental stresses. Positive protection results were obtained under all four conditions, especially under H2O2 stress, the survival rate of probiotics embedded in microcapsules was about double that of free probiotics. The storage test showed that the total plate count of L. rhamnosus encapsulated in RG-I-rich pectin microcapsules could still reach 6.38 Log (CFU/mL) at 25 °C for 45 days. Moreover, probiotics embedded in microcapsules with additional incubation to form a biofilm layer inside could further improve the probiotics' activities significantly in the above experiments. In conclusion, RG-I-rich pectin may be a good microcapsule wall material for probiotics protection.

Abstract
In modern times, wastewater treatment is vital due to increased water contamination arising from pollutants such as nutrients, pathogens, heavy metals, and pharmaceutical residues. Polysaccharides (PSAs) are natural, renewable, and non-toxic biopolymers used in wastewater treatment in the field of gas separation, liquid filtration, adsorption processes, pervaporation, and proton exchange membranes. Since addition of nanoparticles to PSAs improves their sustainability and strength, nanocomposite PSAs has gained significant attention for wastewater treatment in the past decade. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of PSA-based nanocomposites used for efficient wastewater treatment, focusing on adsorption, photocatalysis, and membrane-based methods. It also discusses potential future applications, challenges, and opportunities in adsorption, filtration, and photocatalysis. Recently, PSAs have shown promise as adsorbents in biological-based systems, effectively removing heavy metals that could hinder microbial activity. Cellulose-mediated adsorbents have successfully removed various pollutants from wastewater, including heavy metals, dyes, oil, organic solvents, pesticides, and pharmaceutical residues. Thus, PSA nanocomposites would support biological processes in wastewater treatment plants. A major concern is the discharge of antibiotic wastes from pharmaceutical industries, posing significant environmental and health risks. PSA-mediated bio-adsorbents, like clay polymeric nanocomposite hydrogel beads, efficiently remove antibiotics from wastewater, ensuring water quality and ecosystem balance. The successful use of PSA-mediated bio-adsorbents in wastewater treatment depends on ongoing research to optimize their application and evaluate their potential environmental impacts. Implementing these eco-friendly adsorbents on a large scale holds great promise in significantly reducing water pollution, safeguarding ecosystems, and protecting human health.

Abstract
Carbohydrates are a class of macromolecules that has significant potential across several domains, including the organisation of genetic material, provision of structural support, and facilitation of defence mechanisms against invasion. Their molecular diversity enables a vast array of essential functions, such as energy storage, immunological signalling, and the modification of food texture and consistency. Due to their rheological characteristics, solubility, sweetness, hygroscopicity, ability to prevent crystallization, flavour encapsulation, and coating capabilities, carbohydrates are useful in food products. Carbohydrates hold potential for the future of therapeutic development due to their important role in sustained drug release, drug targeting, immune antigens, and adjuvants. Bio-based packaging provides an emerging phase of materials that offer biodegradability and biocompatibility, serving as a substitute for traditional non-biodegradable polymers used as coatings on paper. Blending polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) with carbohydrate biopolymers, such as starch, cellulose, polylactic acid, etc., reduces the undesirable qualities of PHA, such as crystallinity and brittleness, and enhances the PHA's properties in addition to minimizing manufacturing costs. Carbohydrate-based biopolymeric nanoparticles are a viable and cost-effective way to boost agricultural yields, which is crucial for the increasing global population. The use of biopolymeric nanoparticles derived from carbohydrates is a potential and economically viable approach to enhance the quality and quantity of agricultural harvests, which is of utmost importance given the developing global population. The carbohydrate biopolymers may play in plant protection against pathogenic fungi by inhibiting spore germination and mycelial growth, may act as effective elicitors inducing the plant immune system to cope with pathogens. Furthermore, they can be utilised as carriers in controlled-release formulations of agrochemicals or other active ingredients, offering an alternative approach to conventional fungicides. It is expected that this review provides an extensive summary of the application of carbohydrates in the realms of food, pharmaceuticals, and environment.

Abstract
Probiotics are essential to improve the health of the host, whereas maintaining the viability of probiotics in harsh environments remains a challenge. Polysaccharides have non-toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and outstanding biodegradability, which can protect probiotics by forming a physical barrier and show a promising prospect for probiotic delivery. In this review, we summarize polysaccharides commonly used for probiotic microencapsulation and introduce the microencapsulation technologies, including extrusion, emulsion, spray drying, freeze drying, and electrohydrodynamics. We discuss strategies for better protection of probiotics and introduce the applications of polysaccharides-encapsulated probiotics in functional food, oral formulation, and animal feed. Finally, we propose the challenges of polysaccharides-based delivery systems in industrial production and application. This review will help provide insight into the advances and challenges of polysaccharides in probiotic delivery.

Abstract
Gold nanoparticles have been broadly investigated as cancer diagnostic and therapeutic agents. Gold nanoparticles are a favorable drug delivery vehicle with their unique subcellular size and good biocompatibility. Chitosan, agarose, fucoidan, porphyran, carrageenan, ulvan and alginate are all examples of biologically active macromolecules. Since they are biocompatible, biodegradable, and irritant-free, they find extensive application in biomedical and macromolecules. The versatility of these compounds is enhanced because they are amenable to modification by functional groups like sulfation, acetylation, and carboxylation. In an eco-friendly preparation process, the biocompatibility and targeting of GNPs can be improved by functionalizing them with polysaccharides. This article provides an update on using carbohydrate-based GNPs in liver cancer treatment, imaging, and drug administration. Selective surface modification of several carbohydrate types and further biological uses of GNPs are focused on.

Abstract
Peony seed is an excellent oil crop, and peony seed oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids needed by the human body. In this study, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), fingerprint, and chemometrics, the correlation between the content of inorganic elements in oil peony seeds, their origins, and varieties were investigated. Meanwhile, estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and carcinogenic risks (CR) were combined to evaluate the comprehensive health risks of heavy metals in peony seed oil. The results showed that the difference in the content of inorganic elements could identify the varieties of oil peony seeds. Sr, K, Ca, V, Al, Fe, Cu, Ba, As, Ga, Co, and Rb were the characteristic inorganic elements that played a role in identification. In addition, The THQs and HIs (< 1) for non-carcinogenic elements indicated no risk. The CRs indicated that the carcinogenic harm was negligible. The study concluded that three varieties of peony seed oil would not pose any health hazard. It provided an effective comprehensive method for the identification of oil peony seeds and predicted the potential health risks of edible peony seed oil, providing a reference for the development and consumption of peony seed oil food.

Abstract
Tree peony is cultivated worldwide in large quantities due to its exceptional ornamental and medicinal value. In recent years, the edible value of tree peony seed oil (TPSO) has garnered significant attention for its high content of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, >40%) and other beneficial minor components, including phytosterols, tocopherols, squalene, and phenolics. This review provides a systematic summary of the nutritional composition and health-promoting effects of TPSO, with a specific focus on its digestion, absorption, bioavailability, and encapsulation status. Additionally, information on techniques for extracting and identifying adulteration of TPSO, as well as its commercial applications and regulated policies, is included. Thanks to its unique nutrients, TPSO offers a wide range of health benefits, such as hypolipidemic, anti-obesity, cholesterol-lowering, antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities, and regulation of the intestinal microbiota. Consequently, TPSO shows promising potential in the food and cosmetic industries and should be cultivated in more countries. However, the application of TPSO is hindered by its low bioavailability, poor stability, and limited water dispersibility. Therefore, it is crucial to develop effective delivery strategies, such as microencapsulation and emulsion, to overcome these limitations. In conclusion, this review provides a comprehensive understanding of the nutritional value of TPSO and emphasizes the need for further research on its nutrition and product development.

Abstract
In this study, a validated quality evaluation method with peony flower fingerprint chromatogram combined with simultaneous determination of sixteen bioactive constituents was established using UPLC-DAD-MS/MS. The results demonstrated that the method was stable, reliable, and accurate. The UPLC chemical fingerprints of 12 different varieties of peonies were established and comprehensively evaluated by similarity evaluation (SE), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA), and quantification analysis. The results of SE indicated that similar chemical components were present in these samples regardless of variety, but there were significant differences in the content of chemical components and material basis characteristics. The results of HCA and PCA showed that 12 varieties of samples were divided into two groups. Four flavonoids (11, 12, 13, and 16), five monoterpenes and their glycosides (3, 4, 6, 14, and 15), three tannins (7, 9, and 10), three phenolic acids (1, 2, and 5), and one aromatic acid (8) were identified from sixteen common peaks by standards and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The simultaneous quantification of six types of components was conducted with the 12 samples, it was found that the sum contents of analytes varied obviously for peony flower samples from different varieties. The content of flavonoids, tannins, and monoterpenes (≥19.34 mg/g) was the highest, accounting for more than 78.45% of the total compounds. The results showed that the flavonoids, tannins, and monoterpenes were considered to be the key indexes in the classification and quality assessment of peony flower. The UPLC-DAD-MS/MS method coupled with multiple compounds determination and fingerprint analysis can be effectively applied as a feature distinguishing method to evaluate the compounds in peony flower raw material for product quality assurance in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Moreover, this study provides ideas for future research and the improvement of products by these industries.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is one of the most chronic and incurable liver diseases triggered mainly by an inappropriate diet and hereditary factors which burden liver metabolic stress, and may result in liver fibrosis or even cancer. While the available drugs show adverse side effects. The non-toxic bioactive molecules derived from natural resources, particularly marine algal polysaccharides (MAPs), present significant potential for treating NASH. In this review, we summarized the protective effects of MAPs on NASH from multiple perspectives, including reducing oxidative stress, regulating lipid metabolism, enhancing immune function, preventing fibrosis, and providing cell protection. Furthermore, the mechanisms of MAPs in treating NASH were comprehensively described. Additionally, we highlight the influences of the special structures of MAPs on their bioactive differences. Through this comprehensive review, we aim to further elucidate the molecular mechanisms of MAPs in NASH and inspire insights for deeper research on the functional food and clinical applications of MAPs.

Abstract
The gelation of scallop Patinopecten yessoensis male gonad hydrolysates (SMGHs) and κ-carrageenan (KC) subjected to pH (2-8, 3-9) and NaCl/KCl stimuli-response was investigated. SMGHs/KC gels subjected to a NaCl response exhibited an increasing storage modulus G'from 2028.6 to 3418.4 Pa as the pH decreased from pH 8 to 2, with corresponding T23 fluctuating from 966.40 to 365.64 ms. For the KCl-treated group, SMGHs/KC gels showed an even greater G' from 4646.7 to 10996.5 Pa, with T23 fluctuating from 622.2 to 276.98 ms as the pH decreased from 9 to 3. The improved gel strength could be ascribed to the blueshift and redshift of hydroxyl groups and amide I peaks, enhanced enthalpy and peak temperature, and gathered characteristic diffraction peaks from SMGHs, KC, NaCl, and KCl. The CLSM and cryo-SEM images further reflected that SMGHs/KC gels showed more flocculation formation and denser and more homogeneous networks with smaller pore sizes in more acidic domains, especially when subjected to the KCl response. This research gives a theoretical and methodological understanding of the construction of salt- and pH-responsive SMGHs/KC hydrogels as novel functional soft biomaterials applied in food and biological fields.

Abstract
The present study was aimed to investigate the intermolecular interaction between myofibrillar proteins (MP) and κ-carrageenan (KC) as mediated by KC concentration (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 %, w/w) and NaCl levels (0.3 and 0.6 M) based on the multiple spectroscopy and molecular docking. The results showed that the incorporation of KC increased the turbidity, zeta-potential, and surface hydrophobicity of MP-KC mixed sols with a dose-dependent manner, as well as significantly decreasing the protein solubility (P < 0.05), which indicated that the interaction between KC and MP promoted the expansion of protein structure and exposed more hydrophobic groups. Fluorescence spectra result revealed that the interaction between MP and KC was a static quenching in the fluorescence quenching process, which affected the aromatic amino acids residue microenvironment of MP. Moreover, the existence of KC decreased the α-helix contents of MP (P < 0.05), contributing to the transformation from random structure to organized configuration of MP. In addition, molecular forces, the molecular docking and thermodynamic parameters indicated that hydrophobic interactions, van der Waals force, and hydrogen bonding were considered as the main interaction forces between MP and KC. Furthermore, 0.6 M NaCl level rendered higher solubility and particle size, as well as lower turbidity and the surface hydrophobicity of MP-KC mixed sols than those with 0.3 M NaCl level (P < 0.05), which promoted the unfolding of MP molecule and subsequently increased the numbers of binding sites between MP and KC, facilitating the intermolecular interactions between MP and KC in mixed sols.

Abstract
Modified release of multiparticulate pharmaceutical forms is a key therapeutic strategy to reduce side effects and toxicity caused by high and repeated doses of immediate-release oral drugs. This research focused on the encapsulation of indomethacin (IND) in the crosslinked k-Car/Ser polymeric matrix by covalent and thermal methods to evaluate drug delivery modulation and properties of the crosslinked blend. Therefore, the entrapment efficiency (EE %), drug loading (DL %) and physicochemical properties of the particles were investigated. The particles presented a spherical shape and a rough surface with a mean diameter of 1.38-2.15 mm (CCA) and 1.56-1.86 mm (thermal crosslink). FTIR investigation indicated the presence of IDM in the particles and X-ray pattern showed the maintenance of crystallinity of IDM. The in vitro release in acidic medium (pH 1.2) and phosphate buffer saline solution (pH 6.8) was 1.23-6.81 % and 81-100 %, respectively. Considering the results, the formulations remained stable after 6 months. The Weibull equation was adequately fitted for all formulations and a diffusion mechanism, swelling and relaxation of chain were observed. IDM-loaded k-carrageenan/sericin/CMC increases cell viability (> 75 % for neutral red and > 81 % for MTT). Finally, all formulations present gastro-resistance, pH response and altered release and have the potential to be used as drug delivery careers.

Abstract
Hybrid carrageenans, also called kappa-2 (K2) or weak kappa, are a class of sulfated polysaccharides with thermo-reversible gelling properties in water and are extracted from a specific family of red seaweeds. K2 are known in the industry for their texturizing properties which are intermediate between those of kappa-carrageenans (K) and iota-carrageenans (I). As such, K2 are gaining industrial interest, as they can replace blends of K and I (K + I) in some niche applications. Over the last decade or so, some progress has been made in unravelling K2's chemical structure. The understanding of K2 gel's structure-rheological properties' relationships has also improved. Such recent progress is reported here, reviewing the literature on gelling K2 published since the last review on the topic. The focus is on the seaweeds used for extracting K2, their block copolymer chemical structures, and how these impact on the gel's formation and rheological properties. The outcome of this review is that additional rheological and structural studies of K2 hydrogels are needed, in particular to understand their viscoelastic behavior under large deformation and to unravel the differences between the texturizing properties of K2 and K + I.

Abstract
Protein-polysaccharide nanoconjugates are covalently interactive networks that are currently the subject of intense research owing to their emerging applications in the food nanotechnology field. Due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability properties, they have played a significant role as wall materials for the formation of various nanostructures to encapsulate nutraceuticals. The food-grade protein-polysaccharide nanoconjugates would be employed to enhance the delivery and stability of nutraceuticals for their real use in the food industry. The most common edible polysaccharides (cellulose, chitosan, pectin, starch, carrageenan, fucoidan, mannan, glucomannan, and arabic gum) and proteins (silk fibroin, collagen, gelatin, soy protein, corn zein, and wheat gluten) have been used as potential building blocks in nano-encapsulation systems because of their excellent physicochemical properties. This article broadens the discussion of food-grade proteins and polysaccharides as nano-encapsulation biomaterials and their fabrication methods, along with a review of the applications of protein-polysaccharide nanoconjugates in the delivery of plant-derived nutraceuticals.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the sono-physico-chemical effects of ultrasound (UND) and its impact on the conjugate rates of morin (MOI) following the addition of polysaccharides in various conditions. In comparison to the control group, the incorporation of quaternary ammonium chitosan decreased the rate of MOI conjugation by 17.38%, but the addition of locust bean gum enhanced the grafting rate by 29.89%. Notably, the highest degree of myofibrillar protein (MRN) unfolding (fluorescence intensity: 114435.50), the most stable state (-44.98 mV), and the greatest specific surface area (393.06 cm2/cm3) were observed in the UMP/LBG group. The outcomes of atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the inclusion of locust bean gum led to a different microscopic morphology than the other two polysaccharides, which may be the primary cause of the strongest sono-physico-chemical effects of the system. This work demonstrated that acoustic settings can be tuned based on the characteristics of polysaccharides to maximize the advantages of sono-physico-chemical impacts in UND-assisted MOI processing.

Abstract
Polysaccharides κ-carrageenan (κ-Car) have become a predominant source in developing bioactive materials. We aimed to develop biopolymer composite materials of κ-Car with coriander essential oil (CEO) (κ-Car-CEO) films for fibroblast-associated wound healing. Initially, we loaded the CEO in to κ-Car and CEO through homogenization and ultrasonication to fabricate composite film bioactive materials. After performing morphological and chemical characterizations, we validated the developed material functionalities in both in vitro and in vivo models. The chemical and morphological analysis with physical structure, swelling ratio, encapsulation efficiency, CEO release, and water barrier properties of films examined and showed the structural interaction of κ-Car and CEO-loaded into the polymer network. Furthermore, the bioactive applications of CEO release showed initial burst release followed by controlled release from the κ-Car composite film with fibroblast (L929) cell adhesive capabilities and mechanosensing. Our results proved that the CEO-loaded into the κ-Car film impacts cell adhesion, F-actin organization, and collagen synthesis, followed by in vitro mechanosensing activation, further promoting wound healing in vivo. Our innovative perspectives of active polysaccharide (κ-Car)-based CEO functional film materials could potentially accomplish regenerative medicine.

Abstract
Breast cancer is known as the most common invasive malignancy in women with the highest mortality rate worldwide. This concerning disease may be presented in situ (relatively easier treatment) or be invasive, especially invasive ductal carcinoma which is highly worrisome nowadays. Among several strategies used in breast cancer treatment, nanotechnology-based targeted therapy is currently being investigated, as it depicts advanced technological features able of preventing drugs' side effects on normal cells while effectively acting on tumor cells. In this context, carbohydrate polymer-based nanocomposites have gained particular interest among the biomedical community for breast cancer therapy applications due to their advantage features, including abundance in nature, biocompatibility, straightforward fabrication methods, and good physicochemical properties. In this review, the physicochemical properties and biological activities of carbohydrate polymers and their derivate nanocomposites were discussed. Then, various methods for the fabrication of carbohydrate polymer-based nanocomposites as well as their application in breast cancer therapy and future perspectives were discussed.

Abstract
In the last decade, interest in the development of new graft copolymers based on natural polysaccharides has grown remarkably due to their potential applications in the wastewater treatment, biomedical, nanomedicine, and pharmaceutical fields. Herein, a novel graft copolymer of κ-carrageenan with poly(2-hydroxypropylmethacrylamide) (κ-Crg-g-PHPMA) was synthesized using a 'microwave induced' technique. The synthesized novel graft copolymer has been well characterized in terms of FTIR, 13C NMR, molecular weight determination, TG, DSC, XRD, SEM, and elemental analyses, taking κ-carrageenan as a reference. The graft copolymers' swelling characteristics were investigated at pH 1.2 and 7.4. The results of swelling studies displayed that the incorporation of PHPMA groups on κ-Crg provides increasing hydrophilicity. The effect of PHPMA percentage in the graft copolymers and pH of the medium on the swelling percentage was studied and the findings exhibited that swelling ability increased with the increment in PHPMA percentage and pH of the medium. The best swelling percentage was attained at pH = 7.4 and a grafting percentage of 81 % reaching 1007 % at the end of 240 min. Moreover, cytotoxicity of the synthesized κ-Crg-g-PHPMA copolymer was assessed on the L929 fibroblast cell line and obtained to be non-toxic.

Abstract
In this study, ovotransferrin/chitosan (OVT/CS) composite films cross-linked by citric acid (CA) were prepared and the effects of CA cross-linking on the structure and physicochemical properties of the composite films were investigated. The cross-linking degree measured by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) method confirmed that CA was cross-linked with the matrix, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that more hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions were formed between CA and the matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and Scanning electron microscope images revealed the compatibility between substances. The synergistic inhibition between the matrix results in a significantly higher antibacterial activity of the composite film than the pure film. Compared with uncross-linked films, the mechanical properties, barrier properties and water resistance of the cross-linked films were significantly improved. When the concentration of CA was 5 wt% (W/W, on a dry basis of the weight of OVT and CS), the most significant improvement in film performance was obtained. The tensile strength of the film increased from 32.05 MPa without cross-linking to 61.99 MPa and the swelling degree decreased from 51.5 % to 24.23 %. The observed phenomena suggest that cross-linking OVT and CS with CA can obtain functional edible films with improved properties.

Abstract
Biopolymeric nanoparticles are gaining importance as nanocarriers for various biomedical applications, enabling long-term and controlled release at the target site. Since they are promising delivery systems for various therapeutic agents and offer advantageous properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and stability compared to various toxic metal nanoparticles, we decided to provide an overview on this topic. Therefore, the review focuses on the use of biopolymeric nanoparticles of animal, plant, algal, fungal, and bacterial origin as a sustainable material for potential use as drug delivery systems. A particular focus is on the encapsulation of many different therapeutic agents categorized as bioactive compounds, drugs, antibiotics, and other antimicrobial agents, extracts, and essential oils into protein- and polysaccharide-based nanocarriers. These show promising benefits for human health, especially for successful antimicrobial and anticancer activity. The review article, divided into protein-based and polysaccharide-based biopolymeric nanoparticles and further according to the origin of the biopolymer, enables the reader to select the appropriate biopolymeric nanoparticles more easily for the incorporation of the desired component. The latest research results from the last five years in the field of the successful production of biopolymeric nanoparticles loaded with various therapeutic agents for healthcare applications are included in this review.

Abstract
Janus particles have emerged as a novel and smart material that could improve pharmaceutical formulation, drug delivery, and theranostics. Janus particles have two distinct compartments that differ in functionality, physicochemical properties, and morphological characteristics, among other conventional particles. Recently, Janus particles have attracted considerable attention as effective particulate drug delivery systems as they can accommodate two opposing pharmaceutical agents that can be engineered at the molecular level to achieve better target affinity, lower drug dosage to achieve a therapeutic effect, and controlled drug release with improved pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. This article discusses the development of Janus particles for tailored and improved delivery of pharmaceutical agents for diabetes treatment and antimicrobial applications. It provides an account of advances in the synthesis of Janus particles from various materials using different approaches. It appraises Janus particles as a promising particulate system with the potential to improve conventional delivery systems, providing a better loading capacity and targeting specificity whilst promoting multi-drugs loading and single-dose-drug administration.

Abstract
Water quality and disposability are among the main challenges that governments and societies will outside during the next years due to their close relationship to population growth and urbanization and their direct influence on the environment and socio-economic development. Potable water suitable for human consumption is a key resource that, unfortunately, is strongly limited by anthropogenic pollution and climate change. In this regard, new groups of compounds, referred to as emerging contaminants, represent a risk to human health and living species; they have already been identified in water bodies as a result of increased industrialization. Pesticides, cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, organic dyes, and other man-made chemicals indispensable for modern society are among the emerging pollutants of difficult remediation by traditional methods of wastewater treatment. However, the majority of the currently used waste management and remediation techniques require significant amounts of energy and chemicals, which can themselves be sources of secondary pollution. Therefore, this review reported newly advanced, efficient, and sustainable techniques and approaches for water purification. In particular, new advancements in sustainable membrane-based filtration technologies are discussed, together with their modification through a rational safe-by-design to modulate their hydrophilicity, porosity, surface characteristics, and adsorption performances. Thus, their preparation by the use of biopolymer-based gels is described, as well as their blending with functional cross-linkers or nanofillers or by advanced and innovative approaches, such as electrospinning.

Abstract
Fucoxanthin is a special kind of keto-carotenoid found only in algae. The unique structure of fucoxanthin endows it with extraordinary biological activities, which are of great significance to improve food quality and enhance human health. However, due to its highly unsaturated structure, fucoxanthin also suffers from some limitations, such as instability, poor water solubility and low bioavailability. Therefore, although its content is relatively abundant, its applications in the food industry are extremely scarce. In recent years, there have been many reports on the preparation and characterization of delivery systems for fucoxanthin. These well-designed delivery systems can efficaciously alleviate the instability of fucoxanthin under adverse conditions, thereby improving its oral bioavailability. Thus, this review emphatically summarizes the delivery systems that are widely used to encapsulate, protect and release fucoxanthin. Besides, the influence of delivery systems on the absorption of fucoxanthin by intestinal epithelial cells is highlighted. The applications and future development trends of delivery systems for fucoxanthin are also discussed. The extraction of fucoxanthin, development of novel delivery systems, sensory evaluation and toxicity studies, and industrial production may be promising research directions in the future. Overall, this review provides guidance for the development of fucoxanthin-loaded delivery systems.

Abstract
In order to solve the increasingly serious environmental problems caused by plastic-based packaging, carrageenan-based films are drawing much attentions in food packaging applications, due to low cost, biodegradability, compatibility, and film-forming property. The purpose of this article is to present a comprehensive review of recent developments in carrageenan-based films, including fabrication strategies, physical and chemical properties and novel food packaging applications. Carrageenan can be extracted from red algae mainly by hydrolysis, ultrasonic-assisted and microwave-assisted extraction, and the combination of multiple extraction methods will be future trends in carrageenan extraction methods. Carrageenan can form homogeneous film-forming solutions and fabricate films mainly by direct coating, solvent casting and electrospinning, and mechanism of film formation was discussed in detail. Due to the inherent limitations of the pure carrageenan film, physical and chemical properties of carrageenan films were enhanced by incorporation with other compounds. Therefore, carrageenan-based films can be widely used for extending the shelf life of food and monitoring the food freshness by inhibiting microbial growth, reducing moisture loss and the respiration, etc. This article will provide useful guidelines for further research on carrageenan-based films.

Abstract
Due to their good absorption, satisfactory biocompatibility, and high safety, hydrogels have been widely used in the field of biomedicine, including for drug delivery and tissue regeneration. In this review, we introduce the characteristics and crosslinking methods of natural and synthetic hydrogels. Then, we highlight the design and principle of intelligent hydrogels (i.e., responsive hydrogels) used for drug release. Moreover, we introduce the application of the application of hydrogels in drug release and tissue engineering, and the limitations and research directions of hydrogel in drug release and tissue engineering are also considered. We hope that this review can provide a reference for follow-up studies in related fields.

Abstract
The integral utilization of sustainable resources with versatile, efficient and cleaner processes is encouraged. Hydrothermal treatment with subcritical water is a chemical free, tunable and rapid technology providing enhanced yield compared to conventional extraction and was explored for the benign by design extraction and depolymerization of carrageenan from Chondrus crispus. Up to 90% of the seaweed was solubilized operating under nonisothermal regime during heating up to 200 °C and 75.5% crude carrageenan yield was attained at 140 °C. Crude carrageenan could not be precipitated by ethanol from the extracts produced at 180 °C and higher temperatures, but ultrafiltration (100 kDa) of the extract obtained at 160 °C provided comparable recovery yields and similar rheological features to those of the ethanol precipitated product. Operation at 140 °C was preferred based on the higher recovery yield of the biopolymer and the whole extract was suitable for the green synthesis of polycrystalline decahedral quasi-spherical gold nanoparticles with a mean size distribution of 8.4 nm and Z potential value of -40.2 mV. Alternatively, the crude carrageen fraction was used for the formulation of printable biopolymer based gels with suitable mechanical properties, including a relevant gel strength enhancement (about 10-fold) when compared with conventional procedures.

Abstract
In contrast to conventional particles that have isotropic surfaces, Janus ("two-faced") particles have anisotropic surfaces, which leads to novel physicochemical properties and functional attributes. Janus particles with differing compositions, structures, and functional attributes have been prepared using a variety of fabrication methods. Depending on their composition, Janus particles have been classified as inorganic, polymeric, or polymeric/inorganic types. Recently, there has been growing interest in preparing Janus particles from biological macromolecules to meet the demand for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly food and pharmaceutical supply. At interfaces, Janus particles exhibit the characteristics of both surfactants and Pickering stabilizers, and so their behavior can be described using adsorption theories developed to describe these surface-active substances. Research has highlighted several potential applications of Janus particles in food and medicine, including emulsion formation and stabilization, toxin detection, antimicrobial activity, drug delivery, and medical imaging. Nevertheless, further research is needed to design and fabricate Janus particles that are suitable as functional ingredients in the food and biomedicine industries.

Abstract
Seaweeds and their derivatives are important bioresources of natural bioactive compounds. Nutritional studies indicate that dietary fibers derived from seaweeds have great beneficial potentials in human health and can be developed as functional food. Moreover, sulfated polysaccharides are more likely to be the main bioactive components which are widely distributed in various species of seaweeds including Phaeophyceae, Rhodophyceae and Chlorophyceae. The catabolism by gut microbiota of the seaweeds-derived dietary fibers (DFs) may be one of the pivotal pathways of their physiological functions. Therefore, in this review, we summarized the latest results of the physiological characteristics of seaweed-derived dietary fiber and highlighted the roles of sulfated polysaccharides in the potential regulatory mechanisms against disorders. Meanwhile, the effects of different types of seaweed-derived dietary fiber on gut microbiota were discussed. The analysis of the structure-function correlations and gut microbiota related mechanisms and will contribute to further better applications in food and biotherapeutics.

Abstract
Polysaccharides are attractive gelling agents in pharmacy due to their safety, biocompatibility, biodegradability, relatively easy way of preparation, and low price. Due to their variable physical-chemical properties, polysaccharides have potentialities to be used for designing new drug delivery systems for controlled drug release. In this comparative study, rheological and texture properties as well as the in vitro release of model drug ibuprofen (IBU) with 11 polysaccharide-based hydrogels were investigated. The in vitro release of IBU significantly differed between (i) neutral (hydroxy/alkylcelluloses), (ii) anionic (carboxyalkylcellulose and its sodium salt, tragacanth, carrageenan, xanthan gum), and (iii) cationic (chitosans) hydrogels due to different contribution of provided interactions and viscosity within the hydrogel groups. The drug release kinetics of each hydrogel system was evaluated for five kinetic models. Several combinations of cationic hydrogels with neutral or anionic ones were performed to illustrate possibilities of providing modified IBU release profiles. In this context, chitosan was presented as an effective modifier of diffusion profiles for negatively charged drugs formulated into combined polymeric systems, providing their prolonged release. The most appropriate hydrogel for the topical application (i.e., providing favorable rheological and texture properties along with the highest drug release) was selected from a studied series of polysaccharide-based hydrogels.

Abstract
Food packaging plays a fundamental role in the modern food industry as a main process to preserve the quality of food products from manufacture to consumption. New food packaging technologies are being developed that are formulated with natural compounds by substituting synthetic/chemical antimicrobial and antioxidant agents to fulfill consumers’ expectations for healthy food. The strategy of incorporating natural antimicrobial compounds into food packaging structures is a recent and promising technology to reach this goal. Concepts such as “biodegradable packaging”, “active packaging”, and “bioactive packaging” currently guide the research and development of food packaging. However, the use of natural compounds faces some challenges, including weak stability and sensitivity to processing and storage conditions. The nano/microencapsulation of these bioactive compounds enhances their stability and controls their release. In addition, biodegradable packaging materials are gaining great attention in the face of ever-growing environmental concerns about plastic pollution. They are a sustainable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective alternative to conventional plastic packaging materials. Ultimately, a combined formulation of nano/microencapsulated antimicrobial and antioxidant natural molecules, incorporated into a biodegradable food packaging system, offers many benefits by preventing food spoilage, extending the shelf life of food, reducing plastic and food waste, and preserving the freshness and quality of food. The main objective of this review is to illustrate the latest advances in the principal biodegradable materials used in the development of active antimicrobial and antioxidant packaging systems, as well as the most common nano/microencapsulated active natural agents incorporated into these food-packaging materials.

Abstract
Shellac can be used as an ideal delivery vehicle to deliver and protect the hydrophobic quercetagetin; the barriers such as low acid stability and encapsulation efficiency, however, heavily impede the application of shellac. The purpose of this work is to prepare quercetagetin-loaded shellac-quaternized chitosan nanoparticles (Que-Sh-QCS NPs) to overcome these challenges. Herein, quaternized chitosan, with 14% degree of substitution, was successfully synthesized via a quaternization modification. The concentration of quaternized chitosan over 0.05% can prevent the aggregation of shellac nanoparticles at the acid. The encapsulation efficiency of quercetagetin obviously increased from 37.92 to 65.48% with the concentration of QCS varying from 0 to 0.05%. Meanwhile, Que-Sh-QCS0.05 NPs possessed good storage stability, antioxidant property, biocompatibility, and controlled release. Therefore, quaternized chitosan can improve the encapsulation efficiency and acid and storage stabilities of nutraceutical-loaded shellac nanoparticles, providing a new insight into the application of shellac in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food.

Abstract
In humans, excessive bleeding during civilian accidents, and surgery account for 40% of the mortality worldwide. Hence, the development of biocompatible hemostatic materials useful for rapid hemorrhage control has become a fundamental research problem in the biomedicine community. In this study, we prepared biocompatible gelatin-tannic acid-κ-carrageenan (GTC) microparticles using a facile Tween 80 stabilized water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion method for rapid hemostasis. The formation of GTC microparticles occurs via polyelectrolyte interactions between gelatin and k-carrageenan as well as hydrogen bonding from tannic acid. In addition, the GTC microparticles formulated in our study showed high water adsorption ability with a low volume-swelling ratio for a particle size of 46 μm. In addition, the GTC microparticles displayed >80% biocompatibility in NIH 3T3 cells and <5% hemocompatibility in hemolysis ratio tests. Notably, the GTC microparticles induced rapid blood clotting in 50 s and blood loss of approximately 46 mg in the femoral artery of BALB/c female mice with a 100% survival rate that was significantly better than the control group (blood clot time:250 s; blood loss: 259 mg). Thus, the findings from our study collectively suggest that GTC microparticles may play a promising clinical role in medical applications to tackle hemorrhage control.

Abstract
A number of technological challenges need to be overcome if algae are to be utilized for commercial fuel production. Current economic assessment is largely based on laboratory scale up or commercial systems geared to the production of high value products, since no industrial scale plant exits that are dedicated to algal biofuel. For macroalgae (‘seaweeds’), the most promising processes are anaerobic digestion for biomethane production and fermentation for bioethanol, the latter with levels exceeding those from sugar cane. Currently, both processes could be enhanced by increasing the rate of degradation of the complex polysaccharide cell walls to generate fermentable sugars using specifically tailored hydrolytic enzymes. For microalgal biofuel production, open raceway ponds are more cost-effective than photobioreactors, with CO2 and harvesting/dewatering costs estimated to be ~50% and up to 15% of total costs, respectively. These costs need to be reduced by an order of magnitude if algal biodiesel is to compete with petroleum. Improved economics could be achieved by using a low-cost water supply supplemented with high glucose and nutrients from food grade industrial wastewater and using more efficient flocculation methods and CO2 from power plants. Solar radiation of not <3000 h·yr−1 favours production sites 30° north or south of the equator and should use marginal land with flat topography near oceans. Possible geographical sites are discussed. In terms of biomass conversion, advances in wet technologies such as hydrothermal liquefaction, anaerobic digestion, and transesterification for algal biodiesel are presented and how these can be integrated into a biorefinery are discussed.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols (TP) are a widely acknowledged bioactive natural product, however, low stability and bioavailability have restricted their application in many fields. To enhance the stability and bioavailability of TP under certain moderate conditions, encapsulation technique was applied. Kappa–Carrageenan (KCG) was initially degraded to a lower molecular weight KCG (LKCG) by H2O2, and was selected as wall material to coat TP. The obtained LKCG (Mn = 13,009.5) revealed narrow dispersed fragments (DPI = 1.14). FTIR and NMR results demonstrated that the main chemical structure of KCG remained unchanged after degradation. Subsequently, LK-CG and TP were mixed and homogenized to form LK-CG-TP microspheres. SEM images of the microspheres revealed a regular spherical shape and smooth surface with a mean diameter of 5–10 μM. TG and DSC analysis indicated that LK-CG-TP microspheres exhibited better thermal stability as compared to free TP. The release profile of LK-CG-TP in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) showed a slowly release capacity during the tested 180 min with the final release rate of 88.1% after digestion. Furthermore, in vitro DPPH radical scavenging experiments revealed that LK-CG-TP had an enhanced DPPH scavenging rate as compared to equal concentration of free TP. These results indicated that LK-CG-TP microspheres were feasible for protection and delivery of TP and might have extensive potential applications in other bioactive components.
