Abstract
Twelve organotins (methyl-, octyl-, butyl-, and phenyl-tin), and eight tin-free antifouling paints and their degradation products were measured in marine sediments from the Korean coastal area, and Busan and Ulsan bays, the largest harbor area in Korea. The total concentration of tin-free antifouling paints was two- to threefold higher than the total concentration of organotins. Principal component analysis was used to identify sites with relatively high levels of contamination in the inner bay area of Busan and Ulsan bays, which were separated from the coastal area. In Busan and Ulsan bays, chlorothalonil and DMSA were more dominant than in the coastal area. However, Sea-Nine 211 and total diurons, including their degradation products, were generally dominant in the Korean coastal area. The concentrations of tin and tin-free compounds were significantly different between the east and west coasts.

Abstract
The current research paper presents the results of contamination by tributyltin (TBT) compounds in Klaipėda Port, which is situated in a unique marine-lagoon water interaction zone. One hundred fifty-four surface sediment samples have been taken along the whole transition path from lagoon to the sea and analysed in order to quantify the contamination rate in specific environment of high anthropogenic pressure. The detected TBT concentrations ranged from 1 to 5,200 ng Sn g(-1) of dry weight of sediment. The back-trace of horizontal distribution of TBT-contaminated sediments show obvious increase of tributyltin concentrations closer to port areas dealing with ship repair and places of dry-docking facilities. This is a clear indication that those activities are the main source of contamination in the study area. The estimated correlation of TBT concentration in sediments with total organic carbon and the amount of fine fraction (<0.063 mm) was significant for most of the stations. The TBT concentration in those sites varies from 1 to 100 ng Sn g(-1). This fact indicates that the most intensive accumulation of tributyltin is related to potential contamination source areas (ship repairing, dockyards) due to direct input of hazardous substances into the water.

Abstract
The study of trace elements (Cu, Zn, Pb, As, Hg) and butyltin concentrations in the sediments of Port Camargue enabled assessment of the levels and history of the contamination of the largest European marina linked with the use of antifouling paints. Surface sediments near the boat maintenance area were heavily contaminated with up to 1497 μg g(-1) of Cu, 475 μg g(-1) of Zn, 0.82 μg g(-1) of Hg, 94 μg g(-1) of Pb and over 10,000 ngSn g(-1) of tributyltin (TBT). High concentrations of Hg and TBT indicate ongoing sources of these elements despite the ban on their use as biocides in paints. Sediment cores provided records of contamination since 1969. The peak concentrations of As, Hg, Pb and TBT in the sediment profile reflect their presence on boat hulls when the marina was built at the end of the 1960s. Degradation of TBT in the sediments near the boat maintenance area is slow compared to other less contaminated area of the marina.

Abstract
Tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPT) are emblematic endocrine disruptors, which have been mostly studied in gonochoric prosobranchs. Although both compounds can simultaneously occur in the environment, they have mainly been tested separately for their effects on snail reproduction. Because large discrepancies in experimental conditions occurred in these tests, the present study aimed to compare the relative toxicity of TBT and TPT under similar laboratory conditions in the range of 0 ng Sn/L to 600 ng Sn/L. Tests were performed on the simultaneous hermaphrodite Lymnaea stagnalis, a freshwater snail in which effects of TPT were unknown. Survival, shell length, and reproduction were monitored in a 21-d semistatic test. Frequency of abnormal eggs was assessed as an additional endpoint. Triphenyltin hampered survival while TBT did not. Major effects on shell solidity and reproduction were observed for both compounds, reproductive outputs being more severely hampered by TBT than by TPT. Considering the frequency of abnormal eggs allowed increasing test sensitivity, because snail responses to TBT could be detected at concentrations as low as 19 ng Sn/L. However, the putative mode of action of the 2 compounds could not be deduced from the structure of the molecules or from the response of apical endpoints. Sensitivity of L. stagnalis to TBT and TPT was compared with the sensitivity of prosobranch mollusks with different habitats and different reproductive strategies.

Abstract
The state of scientific knowledge regarding analytical methods, environmental fate, ecotoxicity and ecological risk of triphenyltin (TPT) compounds in marine ecosystems as well as their exposure and health hazard to humans was reviewed. Since the 1960s, TPT compounds have been commonly applied as biocides for diverse industrial and agricultural purposes. For instance, they are used as active ingredients in antifouling systems on marine vessels and mariculture facilities, and as fungicides in agriculture. Due to their intensive use, contamination of coastal waters by TPT and its products of transformation has become a worldwide problem. The proportion of quantified TPT to total phenyltin compounds in the marine environment provides evidence that TPT is photodegradable in water and sediment but resistant to biotransformation. Concentrations of TPT in marine biota are consistently greater than concentrations in water and sediment, which implies potential of TPT to bioaccumulate. TPT is toxic to both marine plants and animals. The predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) for TPT, as determined by use of the species sensitivity distribution approach, is 0.64 ng L(-1). In some parts of the world, concentrations of TPT in seawater exceed the PNEC, indicating that TPT can pose risks to marine life. Although there is negligible risk of TPT to average human consumers, TPT has been detected in blood of Finnish people and the concentration was greater in fishermen who ate more seafood. It is, therefore, advocated to initiate regular monitoring of TPT in blood and breast milk of populations that consume greater amounts of seafood.

Abstract
Tributyltin (TBT) contamination in sediments was investigated in the vicinity of a large-scale shipyard in the years after the implementation of a total ban on the use of TBT based antifouling paints in Korea. Extremely high level of TBT (36,292ng Sn/g) in surface sediment was found at a station in front of a drydock and near surface runoff outfall of the shipyard. TBT concentration in surface sediments of Gohyeon Bay, where the shipyard is located, showed an apparent decreased TBT concentration gradient from the shipyard towards the outer bay. The vertical distribution of TBT contamination derived from a sediment core analysis demonstrated a significant positive correlation (r(2)=0.88; p<0.001) with the annual tonnage of ship-construction in the shipyard within the past three decades. TBT concentrations at six stations surveyed before (2003) and seven years after (2010) the total ban showed no significant differences (p>0.05). Despite the ban on the use of TBT, including ocean going vessels, surface sediments are still being heavily contaminated with TBT, and its levels well exceeded the sediment quality guideline or screening values.

Abstract
Bioremediation of tributyltin (TBT) contaminated sediment was studied and degradation enhancement and improvement of bioavailability were also investigated. In TBT spiked sediment, the half-life of TBT in the control sample, representing natural attenuation, was 578 d indicating its persistence. In the stimulated sample (pH 7.5, aeration and incubated at 28°C), the half-life was significantly reduced to 11 d. Further stimulation by nutrient addition (succinate, glycerol and l-arginine) or inoculation with Enterobacter cloacae (∼10(7) viable cells g(-1) of sediment) resulted in half-life reduction to 9 and 10d, respectively. In non-spiked sediment, the indigenous microorganisms were able to degrade aged TBT, but the extended period of contamination decreased the degradation efficiency. To improve bioavailability, addition of surfactant, adjustment of salinity and sonication were studied. The highest percentage solubilisation of TBT in water was obtained by adjusting salinity to 20 psu, which increased the solubility of TBT from 13% to 33%. Half-lives after bioavailability was improved were 5, 4 and 4d for stimulation, stimulation w/nutrient addition and stimulation w/inoculation, respectively. However, natural attenuation in the control sample was not enhanced. The results show that providing suitable conditions is important in enhancing TBT biodegradation, and bioavailability improvement additionally increased the rate and degraded amount of TBT. Unfortunately, nutrient addition and inoculation of the degrader did not enhance the degradation appreciably.

Abstract
Tributyltin and its degradation products, mono-and dibutyltin have been determined in sediments collected in some representative sites in San Vicente Bay, Chile. The organic matter contents of sediments and water collected simultaneously from the same sampling sites were also determined. High levels of total organic carbon were found in sediments, especially in those from the northern part of the bay (1.80-8.87%). Good correlations were found between total organic carbon and the oxidizable and refractory carbon fractions. Among the butyltin species determined, TBT presented the highest levels, ranging from 14 to 1,560 ng Sn g(-1) dry weight. Concentration ratios of TBT to DBT ranged between 1.33 and 3.10, showing a high degree of contamination in sediments of this Chilean bay. All data obtained were analysed by the chemometric method of principal components analysis. A strong correlation was found between TBT and DBT concentrations in sediments, the different organic matter contents in sediments and water. In marine organisms only TBT was detected, containing the filterer organism Semele solida higher level than Perumytilus purpuratus and Pyura chilensis (220, 150 and 120 ng Sn g(-1) dry weight, respectively). For the alga Rodoficea iridae the TBT concentration was 60 ng Sn g(-1) dw. Comparatively, these values are higher than those reported for the same kind of marine organisms worldwide. The different samples from San Vicente Bay were found to be contaminated by TBT. This contamination can be attributed to the different anthropogenic activities taking place in the bay.

Abstract
In this study we present the results of an intersex survey of Littorina littorea along the Belgian coast. Levels of female intersex and sterility were determined to assess TBT related adverse effects. In addition, we determined the levels of male penis shedding and trematode infestation and investigated the morphology of the shell. Significant differences were found for all these variables which clearly differentiated periwinkles from Zeebrugge (B2) from those at other locations. Intersex index (ISI) values were relatively low (i.e. 0.00-0.39), except at B2 where they ranged up to 3.52, the highest value ever reported in literature. Consequently, female reproductive impairment at B2 was severe. Indeed, up to 95% of female periwinkles were sterile at B2. In addition, 61% of the male periwinkles had shed their penis. Furthermore, no trematode infestation could be detected at B2 and specimens from this location had the largest and heaviest shells, which may be related to population demography and/or a different use of energy budgets.

Abstract
Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were transplanted to seven stations around a large shipyard for 126 days to evaluate tributyltin (TBT) contamination. Although the application of TBT-based paints to ships is totally banned in Korea, butyltin compounds were found to accumulate in mussels following transplantation. Concentrations of TBT and total butyltins in transplanted mussels near the shipyard were in the range of 40-350 ng Sn/g and 74-530 ng Sn/g on a dry weight basis, respectively. Obviously, low TBT concentrations (6.0-53 ng Sn/gdw) were determined in mussels at four stations outside the shipyard. A negative gradient of TBT concentrations and TBT portion to total butyltin concentrations were found in both the surface water and transplanted mussels according to distance from the shipyard. In addition, TBT concentrations in surface water and transplanted mussels showed significant correlation (r(2) = 0.71; p < 0.001). These results indicate that the shipyard still releases fresh TBT into surrounding waters even after TBT regulation in Korea, and mussel transplantation is useful in evaluating TBT contamination in shipyard area.

Abstract
There is a high interest in speciation of organotin compounds (OTCs) in biota and marine sediment samples, due to their influence in the transmission of the contamination in the trophic chain. Sample treatment is still the most "compromising" step of speciation analysis. Extraction methods are in general time-consuming due to long extraction times and several analytical steps involved. In addition, in most cases there are problems of low recovery, especially for MBT. These drawbacks, added to the high matrix effects generally present in biota samples, make the sample treatment for organotin analysis a serious challenge for environmental issues. Here we present a novel, fast and efficient two steps method for organotin speciation in mussel and oyster tissue as well as in marine sediments. The first step based on the use of ultrasonic probe extraction for species leaching allowed us to quantitatively extract these compounds in a few minutes. Matrix interferences drastically decreased by applying a clean-up step based on the use of an imprinted polymer especially designed for tributyltin (TBT). This procedure increased accuracy and precision of the GC-FPD analysis and improving the limit of detection, Besides, this new method prevents the use of standard addition calibration method, which is mandatory without the clean-up step. The optimization and validation has been performed by using three reference materials: mussel tissue CRM-477, oyster candidate T-38 and sediment PACS-2.

Abstract
The covalent imprinting approach has for the first time been successfully applied for the synthesis of an imprinted polymer able to recognize organotin species. The synthesis has been accomplished by co-polymerization of the complex Bu(2)SnO-m-vinylbenzoin as the imprinting template plus co-monomer sodium methacrylate, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linker. The imprinting effect has been evidenced within the narrow pH range 2.5< pH< 3.5. At lower pH values, the imprinting effect is prevented by the exclusive existence of non-specific interactions, whereas pH>3.5 provokes a strong rebind of the template in both imprinted and non-imprinted polymers. This pH dependency can be explained as a selective chemical modification which reduces bind diversity following a model based on enolization by protonation of the specific cavities. Characterization of the adsorption isotherms showed good agreement with the Langmuir-Freundlich (LF) model, presenting quite homogeneous binding sites for a bulk material and high capacity in the imprinting pH range. In addition, the affinity spectrum (AS) method has been represented showing the typical profiles of LF isotherm for both sub-saturation and saturation levels, being in general agreement with the encountered values for fitting coefficients. The covalent molecular imprinted polymer has been successfully evaluated in a SPE process for further OTC determination in the certified mussel tissue (CRM 477).

Abstract
A new method for the speciation of butyltin compounds by solid phase extraction and direct injection using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is described. The compounds were complexed with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate and retained on a C60 sorbent column. The neutral chelates of butyltin compounds were eluted with ethyl acetate containing NaBPr4 as derivatising reagent. The main analytical figures of merit of the proposed method for 10 ml of sample are: linear range 0.2-35 ng/g expressed as Sn; limits of detection, 0.07, 0.09 and 0.10 ng/g as Sn for monobutyltin, dibutyltin and tributyltin, respectively. No interferences from metal ions such as Zn2+, Fe3+, Sb3t, Pb2+, Ni2+ and Mn2+ were observed in the determination of organotin compounds. The validation of method was performed out by the analysis of a standard reference sediment (CRM 462). The method was also applied to the determination of butyltin compounds in marine sediment samples.

Abstract
Ten superficial sediments from river estuaries of Gipuzkoa (North Spain) were collected and analyzed for nine metals (including tin, Sn) and butyltin compounds (monobutyltin, MBT; dibutyltin, DBT; tributyltin, TBT). Total metal concentration in the fine fraction (<63 micrometer) of the sediment was determined in aqua regia--hydrofluoric acid extracts by atomic absorption spectrometry. The butyltin species (BTs) were firstly extracted from the sediments with hydrochloric acid-methanol mixture. After derivatization with sodium tetraethyl borate, the organotin compounds were extracted by solid phase microextraction (SPME) in headspace mode. A fiber coated with 100 micrometer poly(dimethylsiloxane) was used for SPME. The organotin species were analyzed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection. Analysis of the certified reference sediment (PACS-2) shown the suitability of the procedures for determination of metal contents and DBT-TBT species in contaminated sediments. Factorial analysis was used to examine the main sources of metals. Three factors represented more than 89% of the total variance of the metal system, and the Sn was related with Cu-Zn-Pb suggesting the same pollution source. The BTs concentrations in the area were high (TBT ranged from 0.05 to 5.48 mg Sn kg(-1)). The percentage of total butyltin species ( summation operator BTs) respect to the total Sn amount was higher than 4% in all the sediments, showing in the Bidasoa river estuary a remarkable value higher than 20%. Hence, the studied estuarine sediments reflect a pollution that is related with historical industrial and fishing activities of the area.

Abstract
We have demonstrated that flame laser-enhanced ionization (LEI) and flame laser-induced atomic fluorescence (LIAF) techniques can be used as, alternative sensitive detectors for gas chromatographic (GC) analysis of organotin compounds. These two element-specific detection methods are free from interferences from the organic solvent. Two types of LEI schemes for Sn detection are employed. For the two-step LEI scheme (TLEI), the tin atoms in the flame were stepwise excited and then ionized collisionally. In contrast, in detection with the single-step LEI scheme (SLEI), only one dye laser is used. For the analysis of tetramethyltin and tetraethyltin, the GC-TLEI, GC-SLEI, and GC-LIAF systems yield linear dynamic ranges of 0.015-400, 0.39-600 and 0.5-600 ng, respectively. The corresponding detection limits reach 0.15, 3.9 and 5.0 mg/l, with absolute quantities corresponding to 15, 390 and 500 pg, respectively, for an injection volume of 0.1 microl. These detection methods prove to be more sensitive and selective than the conventional flame ionization detection, which achieves absolute detection limits of 800 and 1667 pg for tetraethyltin and tetramethyltin, respectively, under identical GC conditions.

Abstract
A mixed spike containing 119Sn-enriched monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT), and tributyltin (TBT) was prepared by direct butylation of 119Sn-enriched tin metal using a 1:3 molar excess of butyl chloride with iodide and triethylamine as catalysts. The isotopic composition of the different tin species in the spike solution was determined by gas chromatography- ICPMS after aqueous ethylation using sodium tetraethylborate. Reverse isotope dilution analysis was used for the characterization of the spike by means of natural MBT, DBT, and TBT standards. No species transformation was evident during derivatization from the reverse isotope dilution experiments based on the measured isotope ratios both before and after spiking. The mixed spike was applied to the simultaneous analysis of MBT, DBT, and TBT in certified reference materials, PACS-2 and CRM 646, with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A procedure for determination of tetraethyltin (TeET) and tetrabutyltin (TeBT) in water by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) using the headspace approach has been developed. The method has been adapted for the simultaneous determination of mono-, di- and tributyltin species (MBT, DBT and TBT) after derivatization with sodium tetraethylborate in water and sediment samples. The analytical procedures were optimized with respect to stirring conditions, extraction time and extraction temperature. The pH and the amount of derivatizing reagent were also considered in derivatization reaction procedures. The analysis was carried out using gas chromatography equipped with flame ionization detection. The detection limits obtained for TeET and TeBT, in equilibrium conditions (room temperature for TeET and 40 degrees C for TeBT) were 28 and 20 ng/l (as Sn), respectively. The detection limit for butyltin species in water, which was limited by signals which are non-specific for the tin compounds and the sensitivity of the FID system, was found ca. 1 microg/l (as Sn). The SPME method was validated for analysis of sediments by analyzing the certified reference material PACS-2 finding a good agreement with the certified values.

Abstract
A sensitive method for the determination of ultratrace organotin species in seawater is described. The merits and demerits of derivatization methods using Grignard reagent or sodium tetraethylborate (NaBEt4) were evaluated in terms of derivatization efficiency, applicability to the programmed temperature vaporization (PTV) method, and procedural blanks. The sensitivity of the gas chromatography/inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC/ICPMS) was improved by more than 100-fold by operating the shield torch at normal plasma conditions, compared with that obtained without using it. The absolute detection limit as tin reached subfemtogram (fg) levels. Furthermore, the detection limit in terms of relative concentration was improved 100-fold by using the PTV method, which enabled the injection of a large sample volume of as much as 100 microL without loss of analyte. When the organotin species in seawater were extracted into hexane with a preconcentration factor of 1000 after ethylation with NaBEt4 and a 100 microL aliquot of the extract was injected into the GC, the instrumental detection limit in relative concentration reached 0.01 pg/L in original seawater. Sources of contamination of organotin species during the sample preparation were examined, and a purification method of NaBEt4 was developed. Finally, the method was successfully applied to open ocean seawater samples containing organotin species at the level of 1-100 pg/L.
