Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of phytase supplementation in low-phosphorus diets on the production performance, phosphorus–calcium metabolism, and bone metabolism in laying hens from 69 to 78 weeks of age. Hy-Line Brown laying hens (n = 1350) were assigned randomly to six treatments with five replicates of 45 birds. A corn–soybean meal-based diet with no inorganic phosphates was formulated to contain 0.12% non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) and 1470 FTU/kg phytase (Released phytate phosphorus content ≥ 0.1%). Inorganic phosphorus (dicalcium phosphate) was supplemented into the basal diet to construct five test diets (level of NPP supplementation = 0.10%, 0.15%, 0.20%, 0.25%, and 0.30%). The level of calcium carbonate was adjusted to ensure that all six experimental diets contained the same calcium percentage (3.81%). The feeding trial lasted 10 weeks (hens from 69 to 78 weeks of age). Upon supplementation with phytase (1470 FTU/kg), supplemental inorganic phosphates (dicalcium phosphate) had no significant effects (p > 0.05) on the production performance or egg quality. Significant differences in serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, copper, iron, zinc, or manganese were not detected across treatments (p > 0.05). Hens fed NPP (0.15%, 0.20%, 0.25%, and 0.30%) had higher levels (p < 0.0001) of tibial ash, calcium, and phosphorus than those not fed inorganic phosphates. The tibial breaking strength of the group without inorganic phosphates was significantly lower than that of the other groups (p < 0.01). Dietary supplementation with inorganic phosphates had no effect (p > 0.05) on serum levels of calcitonin (CT) and 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D3 (1,25-(OH)2D3). Hens that did not receive supplementation with inorganic phosphates had higher serum levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), osteoprotegerin (OPG), type-I collagen c-telopeptide (CTX-I), and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP-5b) compared with those in the other groups (p < 0.01). Serum levels of CTX-I and TRACP-5b were significantly lower in the NPP-supplementation groups of 0.25% and 0.30% than in the 0.10% NPP-supplementation group (p < 0.01). Dietary supplementation with inorganic phosphates had no effect (p > 0.05) on serum levels of bone-alkaline phosphatase (BAP), osteocalcin (OCN), or osteopontin (OPN). Hens not fed inorganic phosphate had the highest renal expression of phosphorus transporter type IIa Na/Pi cotransporter (NaPi-Ⅱa). Renal expression of NaPi-Ⅱa was increased significantly in NPP-supplementation groups of 0.10–0.20% compared with that in NPP-supplementation groups of 0.25% and 0.30% (p < 0.0001). The results indicated that a reduction in NPP supplementation to 0.15% (dietary NPP level = 0.27%) with phytase inclusion did not have an adverse effect on the production performance or bone health of laying hens from 69 to 78 weeks of age, which might be attributed to renal phosphorus reabsorption and bone resorption. These findings could support the application of low-phosphorus diets in the poultry industry.

Abstract
1. The objective of this study was to investigate wheat genotypes bred for increased intrinsic phytase activity for InsP6 disappearance and the formation of lower inositol phosphates in such wheat-fed broiler chickens. The influence of monocalcium phosphate (MCP) supplementation on these characteristics and the utilisation of P and Ca were also determined. A three-step in vitro assay and a broiler trial were performed.2. In the 63 wheat genotypes tested in vitro, phytase activity varied from 1900 FTU/kg to 5200 FTU/kg, and InsP6 disappearance increased with higher phytase activity of wheat in a linear manner. The addition of MCP significantly reduced in vitro InsP6 disappearance by one-third, independent of the inclusion level of wheat in the feed. When exogenous phytase was added to wheat, in vitro InsP6 disappearance increased independently of the phytase activity of the wheat used.3. In the broiler trial, four wheat genotypes with phytase activities between 2400 and 3700 FTU/kg were included at 400 g/kg in diets with and without MCP. The diets were not pelleted. Separately, wheat 1, without MCP, was tested with the addition of exogenous phytase. Unsexed Ross 308 broiler chickens were allocated to 72 metabolic units of 10 birds each and assigned one of the nine diets. Mineral utilisation was measured based on excreta collection from 20 to 23 d of age. Digesta from the crop and terminal ileum were collected on d 24.4. In the crop and ileum, InsP6 disappearance was not affected by the wheat genotypes, but the addition of MCP significantly decreased InsP6 disappearance. Precaecal P disappearance was significantly reduced by the addition of MCP, with wheat genotypes exerting an effect. Wheat genotypes and the addition of exogenous phytase significantly affected P utilisation. Exogenous phytase had no effect on InsP6 disappearance in the crop but did up to the terminal ileum, the precaecal InsP6 and P disappearance increased with the addition of exogenous phytase.5. Although the intrinsic wheat phytase activity exerted distinct effects on in vitro InsP6 disappearance, no such effect was found in the broiler trial. The addition of MCP significantly inhibited InsP6 degradation in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to determine energy (Exp. 1) and P (Exp. 2) utilization in poultry meal (PM) for broiler chickens. A total of 192 birds were allotted to 3 experimental diets in a randomized complete block design with BW as a blocking factor on d 15 and 16 post hatching in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively. Each diet was fed to 8 replicate cages with 8 birds per cage in both experiments. Initial BW of birds in Exp. 1 and 2 were 438 ± 76.9 g and 543 ± 50.2 g, respectively. Three corn-soybean meal-based diets were prepared to contain 0, 80, or 160 g/kg in Exp. 1 and 0, 50, or 100 g/kg in Exp. 2. In Exp. 1, the addition of PM to the reference diet linearly decreased (P < 0.01) the apparent ileal digestibility of DM and gross energy (GE), as well as the apparent total tract utilization (ATTU) of DM, GE, and N in diets; but did not affect the ileal digestible energy, ME, and MEn of diets. The ileal digestible energy, ME, and MEn of PM estimated by the regression method were 4,002, 3,756, and 3,430 kcal/kg DM, respectively, representing 58 to 68% of the GE in PM. In Exp. 2, graded concentration of PM in the reference diet linearly decreased (P < 0.05) ATTU of DM but linearly increased (P < 0.01) ATTU of P and quadratically increased ATTU of Ca in diets. The true ileal digestibility and true total tract utilization of P in PM estimated by the regression method were 77.5 and 79.0%, respectively. In conclusion, these results showed that inclusion of poultry meal in the diets of broiler chickens reduced the digestibility of GE but increased the utilization of P. The regression-estimated energy values and P digestibility of PM in the current studies may be used in diet formulation.

Abstract
To date, the effect of buckwheat phytase on laying hens has not yet been investigated. Thus, this study was conducted to compare the production performance, egg quality, and phosphorus (P) balance of laying hens given nonphytate P deficient diets supplemented with non-germinated buckwheat (BU) or germinated buckwheat (GBU). Experimental diets (17.8% CP, 2,988 kcal/kg ME) consisted of two control diets, the positive control (PC), satisfying all nutrient requirements and negative control (NC) containing 0.16% less non-phytate P than that in the PC diet, and six experimental diets (containing 10%, 15%, 20% BU or GBU), prepared by replacing maize with BU or GBU, along with the raw materials of NC diet. Fifty-six laying hens (46 week of age) were allocated to eight dietary groups (seven hens each) and experimental diets were given for a period of six weeks (week one was employed for acclimatization, and the subsequent five weeks for data collection). Deteriorated production performance (hen-day egg production, feed intake, egg weight and egg mass) and eggshell quality (shell breaking strength, shell weight and shell thickness) in laying hens given a non-phytate P deficient NC diet was restored by the addition of at least 15% BU and 10% GBU to the NC diet. Total P retention significantly increased in 20% BU, 15% GBU and 20% GBU groups as excretion decreased considerably in these groups than the NC group. Considering the hen-day egg production as an economically important parameter, we found that a 340 phytase unit (PU)/kg diet of buckwheat phytase was equivalent to 0.10% non-phytate P in laying hens. These results suggested that the addition of buckwheat in non-phytate P deficient diets can alleviate the deficiency and improve P availability in laying hens.

Abstract
A total of 1,440 straight-run Heritage 56M × fast-feathering Cobb 500F broiler birds were fed from 11 to 13 d of age to determine the impacts of calcium (Ca), phytate phosphorus (PP), nonphytate P (NPP) and phytase concentrations on the myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6) flow through the different parts of gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The experiment was a 2×2×2×3 randomized block design with 2 Ca (0.7 and 1.0%), 2 PP (0.23 and 0.34%), 2 nPP (0.28 and 0.45%) and 3 phytase (0-, 500-, and 1,000-phytase unit (FTU)/kg) concentrations. The experiment was replicated twice (block) with 3 replicates per treatment (TRT) of 10 birds per block. Concentration of IP6 in crop, proventriculus (PROV) plus (+) gizzard (GIZ) and distal ileum digesta as well as the ileal IP6 disappearance was determined at 13 d of age. In crop, higher IP6 concentration was seen with increased Ca (P < 0.05). Despite the interaction between PP and phytase, higher dietary PP led to greater IP6 concentration (P < 0.05). Similar main effects of PP and phytase were also seen in Prov+Giz and ileum (P < 0.05) without interactions. Interaction between Ca and nPP on IP6 concentration was seen in Prov+Giz (P < 0.05). Decreased ileal IP6 disappearance was found at higher Ca (62.3% at 0.7% Ca vs. 57.5% at 1.0% Ca; P < 0.05). In general, adding phytase improved IP6 degradation but the degree of impact was dependent on nPP and PP (P < 0.05). In conclusion, phytase inclusion significantly reduced IP6 concentration and IP6 disappearance in distal ileum regardless of GIT segments or diet composition, but impacts of dietary Ca, nPP, and PP differed depending on GIT segment examined.

Abstract
Background The enzyme phytase is able to initiate the release of phosphates from phytic acid, making it available for absorption within gastrointestinal tract and following utilization. The aim of the study was to determine effects of Escherichia coli phytase administration on morphological, densitometric and mechanical properties of femur in 16-week-old turkeys. One-day-old BUT Big-6 males were assigned to six weight-matched groups. Turkeys receiving diet with standard phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) content belonged to the positive control group (Group I). Negative control group (Group II) consisted of birds fed diet with lowered P and Ca content. Turkeys belonging to the remaining groups have received the same diet as group II but enriched with graded levels of Escherichia coli phytase: 125 (Group III), 250 (Group IV), 500 (Group V) and 1000 (Group VI) FTU/kg. At the age of 112 days of life, the final body weights were determined and the turkeys were sacrificed to obtain right femur for analyses. Geometric and densitometric properties of femur were determined using quantitative computed tomography (QCT) technique, while mechanical evaluation was performed in three-point bending test. Results Phytase administration increased cross-sectional area, second moment of inertia, mean relative wall thickness, cortical bone mineral density and maximum elastic strength decreasing cortical bone area of femur (P < 0.05). Reduced dietary Ca and P content decreased final body weight of turkeys by 6.5% (P = 0.006). The most advantageous effects of Escherichia coli phytase administration on geometric, densitometric and mechanical properties of femur were observed in turkeys receiving 125 and 250 FTU/kg of the diet. Phytase administration at the dosages of 500 and 1000 FTU/kg of the diet improved the final body weight in turkeys. Conclusions The results obtained in this study indicate a possible practical application of Escherichia coli phytase in turkey feeding to improve skeletal system properties and function.

Abstract
Reducing the level of nonphytate P (NPP) in diets for laying hens without negatively affecting their productivity and heath is crucial for sustainable egg production. A meta-analytical approach using a full quadratic model was applied to quantify relationships between dietary NPP and phytase levels and performance of laying hens. Egg production (EP, %), egg mass (EM, g/hen/day), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were considered as model outputs. A data set containing 168 P or P plus phytase treatments was extracted from 12 published papers. The data were assembled from 14 trials with a total of 8,752 hens in the range of 36 to 76 wk of age. The EP, EM, and FCR were analyzed using a linear mixed model that included the linear and quadratic effects of dietary NPP and phytase levels and their interactions. Except for the quadratic effect of dietary phytase on FCR, all other model components (that is, intercept, linear, quadratic, and interactions) were significant (P<0.05). There was a relatively strong relationship between observed and predicted EP (R2=0.78, RMSE=3.73), EM (R2=0.84, RMSE=2.09), and FCR (R2=0.78, RMSE=0.11), demonstrating that observations within study are practically predictable. Analyses of the model revealed that corn-soybean meal-based diets containing 0.22% of NPP without supplemental phytase resulted in high EP, EM, and feed efficiency in layers. In the presence of 150, 300, and 400 phytase units (FTU)/kg of feed, the dietary NPP level may be decreased and optimal levels were calculated as 0.18, 0.15, and 0.14%, respectively.

Lohmann pink-shell hens were randomly assigned at 56 weeks of age to 5 treatments for 20 weeks as follows: (1) a positive control (PC) with 155 g CP/kg, 11·09 MJ ME/kg, calcium (Ca) 3·40% and non-phytic phosphorus (NPP) 0·26%, (2) a negative control (NC1) diet based on PC diet with Ca decreased to 3·30% and NPP to 0·14%, (3) NC2 diet was formulated on the basis of NC1 diet with 152·7 g CP/kg, 10·90 MJ/kg, (4) NC1 and (5) NC2 supplemented with phytase (300 FTU/kg) each. 3. Feed intake, hen-day or hen-housed egg production, egg number per hen-housed, and final body weight were depressed with NC1 and NC2 diets, but restored by phytase inclusion. There were no significant differences between the dietary treatments for feed conversion efficiency, rates of cracked and broken eggs, egg-shell thickness or egg-shell strength. Mortality was significantly increased by NC2 diet without phytase. Tibia ash was significantly decreased by both NC1 and NC2 diets. Bone strength, and Ca and P contents in tibia ash were significantly increased by phytase inclusion in the NC1 diet. 4. In conclusion, the NC1 and NC2 diets significantly depressed performance and tibia quality, but the addition of phytase (300 FTU/kg) significantly improved performance and tibia integrity.

Abstract
Previous research from our laboratory has shown that citric acid improves phytate P utilization in chicks fed a P-deficient corn-soybean meal diet. The current study was conducted to determine if other organic acids also are effective, with an emphasis on gluconic acid. Four experiments were conducted in which 4 replicate groups of 5 crossbred chicks (New Hampshire x Columbian) were fed a P-deficient diet (0.16% nonphyate P) from 8 to 22 d of age. In Experiment 1, chick weight gain and tibia ash were significantly increased (P < 0.05) by 1.5 and 3% sodium gluconate (NaGlu), 1.5% calcium gluconate (CaGlu), 1.5 and 3% glucono-delta-lactone, and 1% 2-hydroxy-4-methylthio butanoic acid (Alimet). In experiment 2, tibia ash was significantly increased (P < 0.05) by 2% NaGlu, CaGlu, and citric acid in chicks fed the P-deficient diet but not in chicks fed a 0.45% nonphytate P diet, indicating that the organic acid responses were due to increased P utilization. In experiments 3 and 4, tibia ash was significantly increased by 3% NaGlu and 3% citric acid, but not by 3% fumaric acid or 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1% EDTA. The results of this study showed that NaGlu, CaGlu, glucono-delta-lactone, Alimet, and citric acid, but not fumaric acid or EDTA, improved phytate P utilization in chicks fed a corn-soybean meal diet.

Abstract
We studied the ability of broiler chickens to adapt to early moderate P and Ca deficiencies by evaluating the impact of feeding different concentrations of P and Ca, from 1 to 18 d, on performance, bone characteristics, and nutrient absorption in the grower (Gr) period (18 to 32 d). Two starter (St) diets were fed from 1 to 18 d: a control (C) diet [0.45% nonphytate P (nPP) and 0.9% Ca] and a low (L) diet (0.30% nPP and 0.6% Ca). On d 19, half of the birds fed the St C diet were switched to a Gr C diet (0.40% nPP and 0.8% Ca), and the other half were switched to a Gr L diet (0.30% nPP and 0.6% Ca), whereas those fed the L diet in the St phase were fed the L diet in the Gr phase, resulting in a total of 3 treatments. Broiler chickens fed the St L diet weighed less (P < 0.05) than those fed the St C diet at 18 d; however, by 23 d they had they caught up to the C-C birds, and no BW differences (P > 0.05) were observed at 28 and 32 d. Feeding the St L diet resulted in decreased (P < 0.05) tibia ash at 18 d, but by 32 d their tibia ash was not different from that of birds fed the St C and Gr L diets. Broilers subjected to P and Ca restriction from hatch to 18 d absorbed more P and Ca during all times sampled than birds fed the St C and Gr C diets or those fed the St C and the Gr L diet. These results demonstrated that modern broilers exhibited a high adaptive capacity when they were exposed to early dietary P or Ca restrictions.

Abstract
Three 49-d experiments (Exp 1, 2, and 3) with broilers in floor pens were conducted to test the applicability of nonphytin phosphorus (NPP) requirements and the NPP-sparing effect of phytase (PHY) and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25D) determined previously in battery Exp. Six dietary NPP treatments were tested using a 4-phase feeding program. Treatments 1 to 6 were NRC (1994) NPP (C); University of Maryland (UMD) NPP; UMD NPP - 0.064% (UMD+PHY); UMD NPP - 0.09% (UMD+PHY+25D); NRC - 0.10% (C+PHY), and 90% UMD NPP (NC), respectively. Treatments 3, 4, and 5 had 600 U of PHY/kg of diet. Treatment 4 also had 70 microg of 25D/kg of diet; NPP concentrations were reduced to account for the sparing effect of these additives. No differences in hatch to 49 d BW were observed between treatments in Exp 1 and 2, and only in Exp 3 were the BW of the NC broilers (2.86 kg) different (P < 0.05) from those fed the C, UMD, and UMD+PHY treatments (2.96, 2.94, and 2.98 kg, respectively). Cumulative NPP consumption per bird was lowest (P < 0.05) for broilers fed the UMD+PHY+25D treatment (8.65 g in Exp 3) compared with those fed the C, NC, UMD, and UMD+PHY treatments (18.19, 10.60, 13.63, and 11.01 g, respectively for Exp 3). Application of any of these treatments reduced total P and NPP consumption compared with C. The results of this series of floor pen Exp validate the UMD NPP recommendations for a 4-phase feed program and the PHY and 25D NPP-sparing effects observed in battery trials without negatively affecting broiler performance.

Abstract
In experiment 1 (one cycle), hens were fed diets containing 0.10, 0.115, 0.125, 0.135, 0.15, or 0.45% available P (AP) from 40 to 56 wk of age, with the last diet being a positive control. Egg production, egg mass, and BW were reduced (P < 0.05) by all lower AP levels except 0.15% AP when compared with the 0.45% AP treatment. In the second experiment (two cycles with a molt), hens were initially fed diets containing 0.10, 0.12, 0.14, 0.16, 0.18, 0.20, or 0.45% AP from 21 to 63 wk of age. Diets containing 0.10, 0.12, and 0.14% AP were terminated at 35, 39, and 50 wk, respectively, due to low egg production and increased mortality. Hens fed 0.16% AP also had significantly lower production performance than hens fed 0.45% AP during the first cycle. Hens on the 0.16 to 0.45% AP treatments were induced molted at 64 wk of age by 10 d of feed removal. The hens were then returned to the same AP layer diet they had been fed from 21 to 63 wk. For the 68 to 108 wk postmolt second-cycle period, hens fed the 0.16 to 0.20% AP diets (166 to 209 mg/d) had significantly lower egg production, egg mass, and feed efficiency than hens fed 0.45% AP. The results of our study indicated that first-cycle hens required approximately 0.18% AP or 198 mg AP/hen per day, and molted hens in their second cycle had a requirement that was greater than 0.20% AP or 209 mg AP/hen per day.

Abstract
In the past 20 years, scientists have realised that environmental contamination by non-point source nutrients is a significant problem and its control is not easily managed. Manure phosphorus was found to be a primary pollutant of surface water, so methods to reduce manure phosphorus runoff have been a research focus. This review concentrates on approaches developed to reduce the excretion of manure phosphorus and to reduce the soluble phosphorus content of manure by poultry and swine. Addition of phytase to poultry and swine diets reduces phosphorus excretion dramatically. For example, phytase addition lowered broiler manure phosphorus by 10–56%, hen manure phosphorus by 41%, growing–finishing pig manure phosphorus by 21–51% and weaning–growing pig manure phosphorus by 20–25%. Phytase also improves the availability of other nutrients. Addition of vitamin D and its metabolites increases phosphorus retention by 31–79%, while use of this vitamin and its metabolites with phytase improved phosphorus retention by 79%. Further research is needed in the use of organic acids, probiotics and starch and their impact on manure phosphorus reduction. Ratios of dietary calcium:total phosphorus in the range of 1.1:1 to 1.4:1 appear to provide the best efficiency of supplemental phytase and D3 in broilers. Determination of dietary phosphorus requirements for each growth phase is vital, as is accurate and quick measurement of phosphorus contents in feeds. Certain chemical reagents containing aluminium, calcium or iron have been found effective in reducing the solubility of phosphorus, when added to manure or litter. Research reports have shown that reagents containing aluminium reduced phosphorus solubility in manure by 39–100%. Compounds containing iron decreased phosphorus solubility by 48–95%, while calcium compounds reduced soluble phosphorus by 65%. Fly ash containing aluminium, iron and calcium may also be used to lower soluble phosphorus content in manures.

Abstract
Previous research in our laboratory demonstrated marked increases in phytate P utilization when P-deficient corn-soybean meal diets were supplemented with 1a-hydroxycholecalciferol [1alpha-(OH) D3] and fed to chicks. Our objective was to determine if 1alpha-(OH) D3 would improve phytate P utilization when supplemented to vitamin D-adequate laying hen diets. The five experimental treatments were 1) P-deficient corn-soybean basal diet [17% CP, 3.8% Ca, and 0.10% nonphytate NPP)], 2) basal with 2.5 microg/kg 1alpha-(OH) D3, 3) basal with 5 microg/kg 1alpha-(OH) D3, 4) basal with 10 microg/kg 1alpha-(OH) D3, and 5) basal with 0.35% supplemental inorganic P (0.45% NPP, positive control). Diets were fed to six replicate groups of 12 HyLine W-98 White Leghorn laying hens from 44 to 52 wk of age. Hen-day egg production was significantly depressed by 47 wk of age for the basal diet treatment and by 47, 49, and 48 wk of age, respectively, for the 2.5, 5, and 10 microg/kg of 1alpha-(OH) D3 treatments compared to the positive control diet. Supplementation with 5 or 10 microg/kg 1alpha-(OH) D3 did improve (P < 0.05) egg production, but egg production for those treatments was much lower than that for the 0.45% NPP treatment. Our results indicate that 1alpha-(OH) D3 did not substantially improve P utilization in laying hens fed corn-soybean meal diets.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to determine the nonphytin phosphorus (nPP) requirement for broilers, based on broken line analysis, in the finisher (32 to 42 d) and withdrawal phases (42 to 49 d) of a four-phase feeding program. The determined nPP concentrations used were 0.15, 0.19, 0.26, and 0.31% in the finisher phase, experiment 1 (Exp 1), and 0.10, 0.13, 0.22, and 0.27% in the withdrawal phase, experiment 2 (Exp 2). The analyzed calcium levels in the diets were 0.69 +/- 0.02% and 0.72 +/- 0.05% in Exp 1 and 2, respectively. In Exp 2, an additional treatment was included in which birds were fed NRC-recommended (1994) nPP levels from hatch to 49 d. There were no differences (P>0.05) among dietary treatments in weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency in either experiment. In Exp 1, tibia ash weight of birds fed the diets containing 0.15% nPP was lower (P<0.05) than that of birds fed diets containing 0.19, 0.26, or 0.31% nPP. A requirement of 0.20 +/- 0.01% nPP was determined for male broilers weighing between 1,541 to 2,194 g and from 32 to 42 d of age based on broken line analysis of tibia ash weight response to different dietary nPP levels. In Exp 2, the nPP requirement of male broilers weighing between 2,396 g at 42 d and 3,076 g at 49 d, based on tibia ash weight, was 0.16 +/- 0.02% nPP.

Abstract
The current study was undertaken to estimate variance components for phytate P bioavailability (PBA) and the genetic correlations among PBA with growth and feed utilization (or intake) traits in an unselected random mating chicken population. Pedigreed data from 901 Athens-Canadian randombred chickens hatched from 26 sires, 71 dams, and 105 grandparents were used for estimation of genetic parameters. Birds were individually housed in metabolic cages at 4 wk of age and fed a 0.35% P diet. After 3 d of acclimatization, excreta produced for 3 consecutive d were collected and feed consumed (FC) was measured. Individual 4-wk BW and BW gain (BWG) during the 3-d excreta collection period were also measured. Feed conversion ratios (FCR) were calculated. Phytate P bioavailability was estimated from the disappearance of phytate during the passage of feed through the gastrointestinal tract. The restricted maximum likelihood method with the average information matrix algorithm was used for the estimation of variance components. The heritability estimate for PBA was about 0.10. Genetic correlations between PBA and BW, BWG, and FC were moderate and negative, indicating that improving PBA utilization would moderately affect growth. The genetic correlation between PBA and FCR was negligible and suggested that selection for PBA will not adversely affect FCR. The economic implications of genetically modifying poultry to improving phytate P utilization and the subsequent elimination or reduction of the amount of phytase used in poultry diets are yet to be determined.

Abstract
Our objective was to determine if high available phosphorus corn would provide sufficient available phosphorus (AP) to laying hens fed corn-soybean meal diets from 57 to 69 wk of age. Six replications of 12 Dekalb Sigma Leghorn hens were fed a normal yellow dent (YD) corn-soybean meal diet or high available phosphorus (HAP) corn-soybean meal diet without and with 0.04% supplemental inorganic P. The unsupplemented YD diet was calculated to contain 17% CP, 3.8% Ca, and 0.10% AP, and the unsupplemented HAP diet contained 17% CP, 3.8% Ca, and 0.16% AP. In addition, a positive control, YD diet (17% CP, 3.8% Ca, 0.45% AP) was also fed. The HAP corn was directly substituted for YD on a weight basis, and the amount of soybean meal was kept constant in all diets. Egg production, hen body weight, egg weight, egg mass, feed consumption, and feed efficiency were measured. The YD and the YD + 0.04% P treatments were terminated at 61 and 65 wk of age, respectively, due to severe depressions in egg production. Egg production and egg mass for hens fed HAP diets were not different (P > 0.05) from those of hens fed the 0.45% AP diet; however, hens fed the unsupplemented HAP diet did have lower hen body weights and feed intake (P < 0.05) compared to hens fed the positive control diet. Our results indicate that HAP corn contains more available P than normal YD corn and that hens can be fed HAP corn-soybean meal diets containing little or no P supplementation with only minimal effects on production performance.

Abstract
Three chick experiments and two cecectomized rooster experiments were conducted to determine P bioavailability and amino acid (AA) digestibility in two low phytate corns (LP), a high protein corn (HP), and a corn containing both low phytate and high protein content (HP/LP) compared with conventional corn (CONV). From 8 to 20 or 21 d of age, 1-wk-old New Hampshire x Columbian chicks were fed a cornstarch-dextrose-soybean meal (SBM) basal diet containing 0.10% available P or the basal diet supplemented with two concentrations of P (0.05 or 0.06% and 0.10 or 0.12%) from KH2PO4 or two concentrations of the corns (20 or 21% and 40 or 42%). Bioavailability of P based on tibia bone ash was much higher for LP than for CONV; values ranged from 21 to 40% for CONV and from 59 to 95% for LP. Digestibility of AA in cecectomized roosters indicated no significant differences (P > 0.05) between CONV and HP in the first rooster experiment. Digestibilities of eight AA, including lysine, methionine, and arginine, in LP and HP/LP were higher (P < 0.05) than those in CONV in the second rooster experiment. The results of this study indicated that the P in LP was two to three times more bioavailable than the P in CONV and that the digestibilities of AA in HP/LP were equal to or higher than those in CONV.

Abstract
In the first of two experiments (20 to 70 wk of age), eight treatments consisted of corn-soybean meal diets (0.34% total P, 3.8% Ca, 17% CP, 2,758 kcal ME/kg) containing 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, or 0.45% available P (AP), with the three lowest AP diets supplemented with 300 units of phytase/kg of diet. A second experiment evaluated the effect of feeding the 0.10% AP diet with and without phytase on performance and time required for onset of P deficiency in older hens (70 to 76 wk of age). In Experiment 1, the 0.10% AP diet with no supplemental phytase depressed performance by 28 wk of age. No other significant differences in performance were observed among treatments for the entire 20- to 70-wk period except that the 0.15% AP diet with no phytase resulted in body weights and tibia ash that were lower (P < 0.05) than those of hens fed the 0.45% AP diet during the last 30 wk. The mean daily AP intake of hens fed the 0.10% AP, 0.15% AP, 0.45% AP, or 0.10% AP + phytase diets was 94,159, 499, or 108 mg, respectively. Excreta P concentration was decreased by approximately 50% in birds consuming 0.10% AP + 300 U/kg phytase compared with those consuming 0.45% AP. In the second experiment, P deficiency signs occurred within 3 wk of consuming the unsupplemented corn-soybean meal diet (0.10% AP) compared with 8 wk in Experiment 1. The results of this study indicate that phytase improves P utilization in corn-soybean meal diets for laying hens and that a corn-soybean meal diet containing 0.15% AP (159 mg AP/d) or containing 0.10% AP + 300 units of phytase/kg (108 mg AP/d) supported optimal egg production from 20 to 70 wk of age. Additionally, results suggested that older hens may exhibit P deficiency symptoms sooner than younger hens.

Abstract
In order to accurately formulate diets for broilers and laying hens to meet phosphorus requirements without overfeeding, precise knowledge of an individual feed ingredient's contribution to the retainable phosphorus is needed. Seven feed ingredients, included as the sole source of phosphorus, were tested with and without the addition of 600 phytase units (FTU) phytase/kg diet, in a 5-d bioassay with 10 22-d-old male broilers. Without addition of phytase, the amounts of phytate phosphorus hydrolyzed in corn, soybean meal, wheat, wheat midds, barley, defatted rice bran, and canola were 30.8, 34.9, 30.7, 29.1, 32.2, 33.2, and 36.7%, respectively. The addition of phytase increased (P < or = 0.05) each value to 59.0, 72.4, 46.8, 52.2, 71.3, 48.0, and 55.8%, respectively. The addition of phytase increased total phosphorus retention from 34.8, 27.0, 16.0, 31.9, 40.3, 15.5, and 39.4% to 40.9, 58.0, 33.8, 43.4, 55.5, 26.5, and 45.7%, respectively. A similar bioassay was conducted with laying hens fed corn, soybean meal, and defatted rice bran. Without phytase addition, phytate phosphorus hydrolyzed in soybean meal, corn, and rice bran was determined to be 25.7, 23.0, and 36.1%, respectively, and was increased (P < or = 0.05) to 62.4, 52.0, and 50.9%, respectively, with the addition of 300 FTU phytase/kg feed. Total phosphorus retention of soybean meal, corn, and rice bran increased from 36.8, 28.6, and 35.9% to 53.4, 44.7, and 43.0%, respectively, with the addition of phytase.

Abstract
Two experiments (Exp.) were conducted to determine the growth response of White Pekin ducks to inclusion of microbial phytase in finisher diet. In Exp. 1, 1-d-old male ducks (240 total) were reared in litter-floor pens and fed regular starter diet until 3 wk of age. At 3 wk of age, ducks were randomly divided into six groups of 10 ducks each and each group was fed one of four diets. Three finisher diets containing 16% CP and 0.18% available phosphorus (AP) without supplemental P were formulated with microbial phytase (Natuphos) added at 0, 750, or 1,500 phytase units/kg of diet. The fourth diet was a control finisher diet that was supplemented with dicalcium phosphate (DCP) to supply dietary AP of 0.41%. Group BW and feed intake were measured weekly to assess growth response. At 6 wk of age, leg bones (tibia, femur, metatarsus) from five randomly selected ducks were removed and analyzed for bone characteristics. In Exp. 2, a total of 120 ducks reared as in Exp. 1 were randomly divided into six groups of five ducks each and fed one of four diets. A basal finisher diet was formulated to contain 16% CP and 0.18% AP. Monosodium phosphate was added to the basal diet to give dietary AP levels of 0.18, 0.27, and 0.36%. The fourth diet was the basal diet supplemented with microbial phytase (750 phytase units/kg of diet). Ducks were fed these diets from 3 to 6 wk of age. At the end of the study, ducks were bled by cardiac puncture and blood plasma was analyzed for P concentration. Leg bones from all ducks were removed and analyzed for bone characteristics as in Exp. 1. Feed intake increased linearly with increased level of dietary phytase, whereas the weight gain response was quadratic only during the last week of Exp. 1. In Exp. 2, there was a quadratic response for weight gain due to dietary AP. Weight gain due to phytase (750 units) was not different from ducks fed diets at 0 or 0.18% AP. Plasma P concentration increased linearly as dietary AP increased. Plasma P levels of ducks fed phytase were similar to those of ducks fed 0.18% AP but lower than in ducks fed 0.27% AP. Estimates of AP resulting from the addition of 750 units of phytase to basal diet were 0.05 and 0.07% based on plasma P concentration and weight gain, respectively. Using regression analysis, the AP due to phytase effect in the diet was estimated to range from 0.06 to 0.08%. Results suggest that phytase can be used in finisher diets similar to the one used in this study for ducks from 3 to 6 wk of age to improve growth performance and leg bone development similar to ducks fed diets supplemented with P from inorganic sources.

Abstract
Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of pelleting and extrusion of feeds on the utilization of phytate P by broilers. The first experiment investigated the effects of pelleting the whole corn-soybean meal (SBM) diet, the corn, or SBM separately on phytate P utilization. The P-deficient basal diet contained 0.5% total P and 0.2% phytate P. Steam pelleting the whole diet, the corn, or SBM separately did not decrease the severity of the P deficiency obtained and there were no indications of increased phytate P utilization. In the second experiment, the whole corn-SBM P-deficient diet was extruded. Extrusion of the diet did not influence bone ash and P rickets, both sensitive criteria of P deficiency. Extrusion decreased Ca, P, and phytate P retention and decreased the ME value of the diet. In the third experiment, phytate P retention by chickens fed three commercial pelleted diets was compared to chicks fed the corn-SBM P-deficient diet. Phytate P retention by the chickens fed the commercial diets was much lower than retention by chickens fed the corn-SBM P-deficient diet. These studies gave no indication that pelleting or extrusion of corn-SBM diets would increase phytate P utilization by broiler chickens.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of supplementing a corn-soybean layer diet with either phytase, 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25-(OH)2D3], or their combination. The basal diet was formulated to contain 3.00% Ca and 0.33% total P. In Experiment 1, 160, 56-wk-old laying hens were randomly assigned to treatment groups fed either the basal diet alone or diets supplemented with either 600 phytase units (FTU) per kilogram feed, 5 microg 1,25-(OH)2D3/kg feed, or their combination for an experimental period of 9 wk. Experiment 2 had the same design and treatment groups except that laying hens 24 wk of age were used for 8 wk. In both experiments, phytase had a positive effect on BW and increased plasma dialyzable P, tibia bone ash, and phytate P retention. In the first experiment, the addition of phytase, 1,25-(OH)2D3, or their combination prevented a rapid decrease in egg production due to a Mycoplasma gallisepticum infection observed in hens fed the basal diet. However, no benefit in egg production was obtained in the second experiment. No effects on egg weight and egg specific gravity were observed in both experiments. These results clearly indicate that phytase, and to a lesser extent 1,25-(OH)2D3, can be used to increase the utilization of phytate P by laying hens.

Abstract
The kinetics, mineral dependency, and pH dependency of phytate hydrolysis by preparations of chicken small intestinal brush border membrane vesicles were determined. Substantial phytate hydrolysis occurred over the pH range from 5 to 6.5 with a maximum hydrolysis at pH of 6. Inclusion of 25 mM MgCl2 in the media doubled the rate of phytate hydrolysis. The brush border was shown to have no nonspecific acid phosphatase activity and excess phytate had no effect on alkaline phosphatase activity at pH 11. Under optimal conditions of pH 6 plus 25 mM MgCl2, a kinetic model of a single Michaelis-Menten type of enzymatic activity with a Km of 0.160 +/- 0.008 mM and a Vmax of 42.5 +/- 1.0 nmol/mg vesicle protein per min plus a small unsaturable component converged to the data (P < 0.05). The specific and total activities of intestinal brush border phytase were highest in the duodenum (P < 0.05) and decreased progressively down the length of the gut. Intestinal brush border vesicles prepared from broiler chicks and mature laying hens had comparable specific phytase activity. However, the total activity of brush border phytase was 35% higher in the small intestine of laying hens (P < 0.05). Intestinal brush border phytase could contribute to phytate-phosphorus digestibility and may be subject to regulation in response to the dietary phosphorus and vitamin D status of the chicken.

Abstract
Studies were conducted with corn-soybean meal diets to evaluate the effects of phytate phosphorus utilization on zinc absorption and retention in broiler chicks. In the first two experiments, zinc-65 was used to determine zinc absorption. Experiment 1 was a 2 x 2 factorial with 0 or 5 micrograms/kg dihydroxycholecalciferol and 0 or 40 ppm supplemental zinc. In Experiment 2, 5 micrograms/kg 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25-(OH)2D3] or 750 units/kg phytase or both were added to a diet containing 35 ppm zinc. The diets in Experiment 3 were similar to Experiment 2 except that 600 units/kg phytase was fed. Experiment 4 was similar to Experiment 3 except that dietary phosphorus was decreased by .15%. There were no treatment effects on body weight in Experiments 1 and 2. Zinc absorption was higher in zinc-deficient birds in Experiment 1, but there were no other effects on zinc-65 absorption or retention. Body weight was increased by 1,25-(OH)2D3 in Experiments 3 and 4 and by phytase in Experiment 4. Phytate phosphorus retention was increased by phytase and 1,25-(OH)2D3 and was increased additively when both sources were fed. Dietary 1,25-(OH)2D3 increased zinc retention at times during Experiments 3 and 4, but this response was inconsistent. Phytase did not affect zinc retention. Phytase plus 1,25-(OH)2D3 increased zinc retention synergistically in Experiment 3. Bone zinc was increased by 1,25-(OH)2D3 and phytase, and there was an additive effect in Experiment 3. Plasma zinc and alkaline phosphatase were not affected. The results suggest that supplemental zinc may be decreased in a corn-soybean meal diet when phytate phosphorus utilization is enhanced.

Abstract
This study showed that, in chickens, the negative effects of phytate-phosphorus in a low inorganic phosphorus diet could be completely reversed through the additive effects of reduced dietary calcium and increased cholecalciferol. In the future, perhaps greater reliance on more readily available plant phosphorus sources may be instituted in developing countries, where cheap sources of inorganic phosphorus are difficult to obtain.
