Free-Radical Photopolymerization for Curing Products for Refinish Coatings Market

In-situ photo-crosslinkable elastomer based on polyalphaolefin/halloysite nanohybrid

In this research, new injectable and in situ photocurable elastomeric nanohybrids have been fabricated from polyalphaolefin (PAO) resins and halloysite nanofiller. In this regard, the co-oligomerization of long α-olefin monomers (C6, C8 and C10) with alkenol counterparts was carried out via a simple cationic route to provide OH-functionalized PAOs. The newly formed PAO type copolymer resins as well as halloysite nanoclay were then equipped with photocurable CC bonds containing an acrylate moiety. After the characterization of the final chemical substances and also of the intermediate structures, experimentally and computationally by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, the neat treated PAO and PAO/halloysite nanohybrids were subjected to a curing process by visible light irradiation (λ ∼ 475 nm, blue light). The crosslinking efficiency of the neat resins and the formed nanohybrid was evaluated using shrinkage strain-time curves and equilibrium swelling method. The suggested nanohybrid is not only biocompatible (96 % in the MTT assay), and hydrophilic (with a water contact angle of 61°), but also exhibits an easy, fast and robust curing process with great potential for coating and sealing technologies for medical devices.

Ring Opening Polymerization of Six- and Eight-Membered Racemic Cyclic Esters for Biodegradable Materials

The low percentage of recyclability of the polymeric materials obtained by olefin transition metal (TM) polymerization catalysis has increased the interest in their substitution with more eco-friendly materials with reliable physical and mechanical properties. Among the variety of known biodegradable polymers, linear aliphatic polyesters produced by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters occupy a prominent position. The polymer properties are highly dependent on the macromolecule microstructure, and the control of stereoselectivity is necessary for providing materials with precise and finely tuned properties. In this review, we aim to outline the main synthetic routes, the physical properties and also the applications of three commercially available biodegradable materials: Polylactic acid (PLA), Poly(Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid) (PLGA), and Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB), all of three easily accessible via ROP. In this framework, understanding the origin of enantioselectivity and the factors that determine it is then crucial for the development of materials with suitable thermal and mechanical properties.

Role of GO and Photoinitiator Concentration on Curing Behavior of PEG-Based Polymer for DLP 3D Printing

Photocuring kinetics in photopolymerization-based three-dimensional (3D) printing processes have gained significant attention because they determine the final dimension accuracy of the printed structures. In this study, the curing kinetics of liquid-light-curable resins, including water-dispersed graphene oxide (GO) and ultraviolet (UV)-cured acrylic resins, were investigated during digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. Various stable composites of water-dispersed GO and UV-cured acrylic resin were prepared to fabricate 3D structures for cure-depth measurements. Several factors, including the UV-exposure conditions, photoinitiator concentration, and composition of the photopolymer resin, were found to significantly affect the cure-depth characteristics of the printed structures. The photocuring depth of the polymeric resin system was investigated as a function of the photoinitiator concentration. In addition, the study showed that the introduction of GO played a significant role in controlling the performance of the highly cross-linked network and the thickness of the cured layer. The curing characteristics of functional photocurable polymer-based DLP 3D printing contribute to process development and improvement of the quality of printed microstructures for industrial applications.

Influence of the Ethanol Content of Adduct on the Comonomer Incorporation of Related Ziegler-Natta Catalysts in Propylene (Co)polymerizations

The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the ethanol content of adducts on the catalytic behavior of related Ziegler-Natta (ZN) catalysts in propylene homo- and copolymerizations (with 1-hexene comonomer) in terms of activity, isotacticity, H2 response, and comonomer incorporation. For this purpose, three MgCl2.nEtOH adducts with n values of 0.7, 1.2, and 2.8 were synthesized and used in the synthesis of related ZN catalysts. The catalysts were thoroughly characterized using XRD, BET, SEM, EDX, N2 adsorption-desorption, and DFT techniques. Additionally, the microstructure of the synthesized (co)polymers was distinguished via DSC, SSA, and TREF techniques. Their activity was found to enhance with the adduct's ethanol content in both homo- and copolymerization experiments, and the increase was more pronounced in homopolymerization reactions in the absence of H2. Furthermore, the catalyst with the highest ethanol content provided a copolymer with a lower isotacticity index, a shorter meso sequence length, and a more uniform distribution of comonomer within the chains. These results were attributed to the higher total surface area and Ti content of the corresponding catalyst, as well as its lower average pore diameter, a larger proportion of large pores compared to the other two catalysts, and its spherical open bud morphology. It affirms the importance of catalyst/support ethanol-content control during the preparation process. Then, molecular simulation was employed to shed light on the iso-specificity of the polypropylene produced via synthesized catalysts.

Solid Rocket Propellant Photo-Polymerization with an In-House LED-UV Prototype

Composite solid propellants have used cast molding production technology for many decades, with intrinsic limitations on production flexibility, promptness, and grain geometry, as well as environmental implications on toxicity and global carbon footprint. This traditional method involves the use of toxic chemicals, has a long processing time, requires high temperature, and the products have limited geometries. To overcome those issues, different photo-curable resins have been evaluated as possible matrices. In fact, the UV-curing process is fast and has low energy consumption. The photocuring reaction parameters of six different pristine formulations were evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. After finding the optimal curing parameters, different composites were prepared by adding 75 or 80 wt% ammonium sulfate particles used as an inert replacement for the oxidant. The thermomechanical properties and thermal resistance of the UV-cured composites were characterized via dynamic thermal-mechanical and thermogravimetric analysis. Subsequently, the mechanical properties of the inert propellants were investigated by tensile tests. The most promising resin systems for the production of solid rocket propellants were then 3D printed by an in-house developed illumination system and the obtained object micro-structure was evaluated by X-ray computed tomography.

Latest Advances in Highly Efficient Dye-Based Photoinitiating Systems for Radical Polymerization

Light-activated polymerization is one of the most important and powerful strategies for fabrication of various types of advanced polymer materials. Because of many advantages, such as economy, efficiency, energy saving and being environmentally friendly, etc., photopolymerization is commonly used in different fields of science and technology. Generally, the initiation of polymerization reactions requires not only light energy but also the presence of a suitable photoinitiator (PI) in the photocurable composition. In recent years, dye-based photoinitiating systems have revolutionized and conquered the global market of innovative PIs. Since then, numerous photoinitiators for radical polymerization containing different organic dyes as light absorbers have been proposed. However, despite the large number of initiators designed, this topic is still relevant today. The interest towards dye-based photoinitiating systems continues to gain in importance, which is related to the need for new initiators capable of effectively initiating chain reactions under mild conditions. In this paper we present the most important information about photoinitiated radical polymerization. We describe the main directions for the application of this technique in various areas. Attention is mainly focused on the review of high-performance radical photoinitiators containing different sensitizers. Moreover, we present our latest achievements in the field of modern dye-based photoinitiating systems for the radical polymerization of acrylates.

Chain Walking in the AlCl3 Catalyzed Cationic Polymerization of α-Olefins

Continuing efforts aimed at performing the 1-decene polymerization to low viscosity polyalphaolefins (PAO)s using a less hazardous AlCl₃ catalyst than boron-based analogs, the basic mechanisms of this system were revealed in this research. In this aspect, neat AlCl₃ and AlCl₃ /toluene were carried out to perform 1-decene polymerizations. Microstructure analyses of the as-synthesized oils revealed low molecular weight (708 vs. 1529 g/mol), kinematic viscosity (KV¹⁰⁰ =6.4 vs. 22.2 cSt), and long chain branching (82.1 vs. 84.7) of PAO from the system containing toluene solvent. Furthermore, NMR analysis confirmed various types of short chain branch (SCB) with the inclusion of toluene ring in the structure of final PAO chains. Then, to shed light on the basic mechanisms of cationic polymerization of 1-decene including: i) chain initiation, ii) chain transfer to the monomer, iii) isomerization of the carbocation via a chain walking mechanism (causes different SCB length), and iv) binding of toluene ring to the propagating PAO chain (to yield aromatic containing oligomers), molecular modeling at the DFT level was employed. The energies obtained confirmed the ease of carbocation isomerization and chain transfer mechanisms in toluene medium, which well confirms the highly branched structure experimentally obtained for related PAO.

Phosphorus-Containing Telomers as UV-Curable Binders of Solvent-Free Varnish Coatings

The synthesis of novel phosphorus-containing telomers (P-telomers) was conducted via a solution-free UV-initiated telomerization process of butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, and styrene, different phosphorus telogens (dimethyl phosphite (DMPh), dibutyl phosphite (DBPh), diphenyl phosphite (DPPh) or dibutyl phosphate (DBP)), and a radical photoinitiator-acylphosphine oxide (APO). The course of the UV-phototelomerization process was monitored by photo-DSC and the chemical structures of telomers were assessed by FTIR. Final UV-photocurable varnish compositions consisted of prepared P-telomer syrups, crosslinking monomer (pentaerythritol triacrylate; PETIA), and a radical UV-photoinitiator (α-hydroxyalkylphenone, HAP). The influence of P- telomers on the optical and mechanical features of coatings was investigated. Relatively the highest hardness and satisfactory scratch values, as well as water and solvent resistance, were observed for varnish based on DMPh-telomers. While the strongest adhesive bond to a glass substrate was reported for DPPh-telomers. It is worth pointing out that the P-telomers did not affect the gloss values of varnishes in comparison to the telomer-free reference sample.

Photoredox catalysis leading to triazolo-quinoxalinones at room temperature: selectivity of the rate determining step

The interest in the fusion product of quinoxalinone skeletons and 1,2,3-triazole units has greatly increased in recent years since they are known to be agonists of G-protein-coupled Niacin receptor 109A and inhibitors of the benzodiazepine and adenosine receptors. Here, we unveil the mechanism for the photoredox catalyzed synthesis of those scaffolds by means of DFT calculations. The calculations indicate that the rate determining step of this transformation is the attack of the in situ generated radical intermediate on the CN bond of the quinoxalinone species to form a new C-C bond. Predictive chemistry here reveals that the energy difference is so subtle, and gives the recipe of which substituents, sterically and electronically, can fit to perform the reaction at room temperature.

Naphthalene-Based Oxime Esters as Type I Photoinitiators for Free Radical Photopolymerization

In order to discuss the polymerization effect from the substituted position and methoxy group of Type I photinitiators, a series of naphthalene-based oxime esters was designed and synthesized. Compared to the 2-naphthalene-substituted compound, the UV absorption region of the 1-naphthalene-based compound was greatly improved. In addition, the methoxy substitution exhibited longer absorption characteristics than did the methoxy-free one. The photochemical reaction behavior of these novel compounds was also studied by photolysis, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments. Finally, the initiation abilities of naphthalene-based oxime esters toward trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) monomer were conducted through the photo-DSC instrument under UV and a 405@nm LED lamp. Remarkedly, the naphthalene-based oxime ester (NA-3) that contains 1-naphthalene with o-methoxy substituent showed the rather red-shifted absorption region with the highest final conversion efficiency under UV (46%) and 405@nm LED (41%) lamp irradiation.

A Study of the Synthesis and Characterization of New Acrylamide Derivatives for Use as Corrosion Inhibitors in Nitric Acid Solutions of Copper

The objective of this research was to explore the impact of corrosion inhibition of some synthetic acrylamide derivatives 2-cyano-N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)acrylamide (ACR-2) and 2-cyano-N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-phenylacrylamide (ACR-3) on copper in 1.0 M nitric acid solution using chemical and electrochemical methods, including mass loss as a chemical method and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PP) as electrochemical methods. By Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR), and mass spectroscopy (MS) methods, the two compounds were verified and characterized. There is evidence that both compounds were effective corrosion inhibitors for copper in 1.0 M nitric acid (HNO₃) solutions, as indicated by the PP curves, which show that these compounds may be considered mixed-type inhibitors. With the two compounds added, the value of the double-layer capacitance was reduced. In the case of 20 × 10^-5 M, they reached maximum efficiencies of 84.5% and 86.1%, respectively. Having studied its behavior during adsorption on copper, it was concluded that it follows chemical adsorption and Langmuir isotherm. The theoretical computations and the experimental findings were compared using density functional theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo simulations (MC).
