Effect of UV pretreatment on the source control of floR during subsequent biotreatment of florfenicol wastewater

UV photolysis has been recommended as an alternative pretreatment method for the elimination of antibacterial activity of antibiotics against the indicator strain, but the pretreated antibiotic intermediates might not lose their potential to induce antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) proliferation during subsequent biotreatment processes. The presence of florfenicol (FLO) in wastewater seriously inhibits the metabolic performance of anaerobic sludge microorganisms, especially the positive correlation between UV irradiation doses and ATP content, while it did not significantly affect the organics utilization ability and protein biosynthetic process of aerobic microorganisms. After sufficient UV pretreatment, the relative abundances of floR from genomic or plasmid DNA in subsequent aerobic and anaerobic biotreatment processes both decreased by two orders of magnitude, maintained at the level of the groups without FLO selective pressure. Meanwhile, the abundances of floR under anaerobic condition were always lower than that under aerobic condition, suggesting that anaerobic biotreatment systems might be more suitable for the effective control of target ARGs. The higher abundance of floR in plasmid DNA than in genome also indicated that the potential transmission risk of mobile ARGs should not be ignored. In addition, the relative abundance of intI1 was positively correlated with floR in its corresponding genomic or plasmid DNA (p < 0.05), which also increased the potential horizontal transfer risk of target ARGs. This study provides new insights into the effect of preferential UV photolysis as a pretreatment method for the enhancement of metabolic performance and source control of target ARGs in subsequent biotreatment processes. Nonmetallic modified zero-valent iron for remediating halogenated organic compounds and heavy metals: A comprehensive review

Zero Valent Iron (ZVI), an ideal reductant treating persistent pollutants, is hampered by issues like corrosion, passivation, and suboptimal utilization. Recent advancements in nonmetallic modified ZVI (NM-ZVI) show promising potential in circumventing these challenges by modifying ZVI's surface and internal physicochemical properties. Despite its promise, a thorough synthesis of research advancements in this domain remains elusive. Here we review the innovative methodologies, regulatory principles, and reduction-centric mechanisms underpinning NM-ZVI's effectiveness against two prevalent persistent pollutants: halogenated organic compounds and heavy metals. We start by evaluating different nonmetallic modification techniques, such as liquid-phase reduction, mechanical ball milling, and pyrolysis, and their respective advantages. The discussion progresses towards a critical analysis of current strategies and mechanisms used for NM-ZVI to enhance its reactivity, electron selectivity, and electron utilization efficiency. This is achieved by optimizing the elemental compositions, content ratios, lattice constants, hydrophobicity, and conductivity. Furthermore, we propose novel approaches for augmenting NM-ZVI's capability to address complex pollution challenges. This review highlights NM-ZVI's potential as an alternative to remediate water environments contaminated with halogenated organic compounds or heavy metals, contributing to the broader discourse on green remediation technologies.

Towards carbon neutrality: Sustainable recycling and upcycling strategies and mechanisms for polyethylene terephthalate via biotic/abiotic pathways

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), one of the most ubiquitous engineering plastics, presents both environmental challenges and opportunities for carbon neutrality and a circular economy. This review comprehensively addressed the latest developments in biotic and abiotic approaches for PET recycling/upcycling. Biotically, microbial depolymerization of PET, along with the biosynthesis of reclaimed monomers [terephthalic acid (TPA), ethylene glycol (EG)] to value-added products, presents an alternative for managing PET waste and enables CO2 reduction. Abiotically, thermal treatments (i.e., hydrolysis, glycolysis, methanolysis, etc.) and photo/electrocatalysis, enabled by catalysis advances, can depolymerize or convert PET/PET monomers in a more flexible, simple, fast, and controllable manner. Tandem abiotic/biotic catalysis offers great potential for PET upcycling to generate commodity chemicals and alternative materials, ideally at lower energy inputs, greenhouse gas emissions, and costs, compared to virgin polymer fabrication. Remarkably, over 25 types of upgraded PET products (e.g., adipic acid, muconic acid, catechol, vanillin, and glycolic acid, etc.) have been identified, underscoring the potential of PET upcycling in diverse applications. Efforts can be made to develop chemo-catalytic depolymerization of PET, improve microbial depolymerization of PET (e.g., hydrolysis efficiency, enzymatic activity, thermal and pH level stability, etc.), as well as identify new microorganisms or hydrolases capable of degrading PET through computational and machine learning algorithms. Consequently, this review provides a roadmap for advancing PET recycling and upcycling technologies, which hold the potential to shape the future of PET waste management and contribute to the preservation of our ecosystems.

Improved efficiency and stability using a novel elemental sulfur-based moving-bed denitrification process

Elemental sulfur-based denitrification (ESDeN) technology is known as a cost-saving alternative to its heterotrophic counterpart for nutrient removal from organic-deficient water. However, the traditional fixed-bed reactor (FixBR), as an extensively used process, suffers from a low denitrification rate and even performance deterioration during long-term operation. Herein, we proposed a novel elemental sulfur-based denitrifying moving-bed reactor (ESDeN-MovBR), in which a screw rotator was employed to drive the filled sulfur particles to be microfluidized vertically (a state of vertical-loop movement). Our results showed that the ESDeN-MovBR realized much superior and more stable denitrification performance compared to the ESDeN-FixBR, as indicated by 3.09-fold higher denitrification rate and over one order of magnitude lower intermediates (NO2- and N2O) yield, which could last for over 100 days. Further research revealed that the microfluidization of sulfur particles facilitated the expelling of nitrogen bubbles and excessive biomass, resulting in the prolongation of actual hydraulic retention time by over 80 % and could partially explain the higher denitrification rate in ESDeN-MovBR. The remaining contribution to the improvement of denitrification rate was suggested to be result from changes in biofilm properties, in which the biofilm thickness of ESDeN-MovBR was found to be 3.29 times thinner yet enriched with 2.52 times more autotrophic denitrifiers. This study offered a completely new solution to boost up the denitrification performance of ESDeN technology and provided in-depth evidence for the necessity of biofilm thickness control in such technology.

Alterations of the cerebral microstructure in patients with noise-induced hearing loss: A diffusion tensor imaging study

OBJECTIVE

To explore the changes in the cerebral microstructure of patients with noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).

METHOD

Overall, 122 patients with NIHL (mild [MP, n = 79], relatively severe patients [including moderate and severe; RSP, n = 32], and undetermined [lost to follow-up, n = 11]) and 84 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. All clinical data, including age, education level, hearing threshold, occupation type, noise exposure time, and some scale scores (including the Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE], tinnitus handicap inventory [THI], and Hamilton Anxiety Scale [HAMA]), were collected and analyzed. All participants underwent T1WI3DFSPGR and DTI, and tract-based spatial statistics and region of interest (ROI) analysis were used for assessment.

RESULTS

The final sample included 71 MP, 28 RSP, and 75 HCs. The HAMA scores of the three groups were significantly different (p < .05). The noise exposure times, hearing thresholds, and HAMA scores of the MP and RSP were significantly different (p < .05). The noise exposure time was positively correlated with the hearing threshold and negatively correlated with the HAMA scores (p < .05), whereas the THI scores were positively correlated with the hearing threshold (p < .05). DTI analysis showed that all DTI parameters (fractional anisotropy [FA], axial diffusivity [AD], mean diffusivity [MD], and radial diffusivity [RD]) were significantly different in the left inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) and left inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF) for the three groups (p < .05). In addition, the FA values were significantly lower in the bilateral corticospinal tract (CST), right fronto-pontine tract (FPT), right forceps major, left superior longitudinal fasciculus (temporal part) (SLF), and left cingulum (hippocampus) (C-H) of the MP and RSP than in those of the HCs (p < .05); the AD values showed diverse changes in the bilateral CST, left IFOF, right anterior thalamic radiation, right external capsule (EC), right SLF, and right superior cerebellar peduncle (SCP) of the MP and RSP relative to those of the HC (p < .05). However, there were no significant differences among the bilateral auditory cortex ROIs of the three groups (p > .05). There was a significant negative correlation between the FA and HAMA scores for the left IFOF/ILF, right FPT, left SLF, and left C-H for the three groups (p < .05). There was a significant positive correlation between the AD and HAMA scores for the left IFOF/ILF and right EC of the three groups (p < .05). There were significantly positive correlations between the RD/MD and HAMA scores in the left IFOF/ILF of the three groups (p < .05). There was a significant negative correlation between the AD in the right SCP and noise exposure time of the MP and RSP groups (p < .05). The AD, MD, and RD in the left ROI were significantly positively correlated with hearing threshold in the MP and RSP groups (p < .05), whereas FA in the right ROI was significantly positively correlated with the HAMA scores for the three groups (p < .05).

CONCLUSION

The changes in the white matter (WM) microstructure may be related to hearing loss caused by noise exposure, and the WM structural abnormalities in patients with NIHL were mainly located in the syndesmotic fibers of the temporooccipital region, which affected the auditory and language pathways. This confirmed that the auditory pathways have abnormal structural connectivity in patients with NIHL.

A global perspective on microbial risk factors in effluents of wastewater treatment plants

Effective monitoring and management of microbial risk factors in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) effluents require a comprehensive investigation of these risks. A global survey on microbial risk factors in WWTP effluents could reveal important insights into their risk features. This study aims to explore the abundance and types of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), virulence factor genes (VFGs), the vector of ARG/VFG, and dominant pathogens in global WWTP effluents. We collected 113 metagenomes of WWTP effluents from the Sequence Read Archive of the National Center for Biotechnology Information and characterized the microbial risk factors. Our results showed that multidrug resistance was the dominant ARG type, while offensive virulence factors were the most abundant type of VFGs. The most dominant types of ARGs in the vector of plasmid and phage were both aminoglycoside resistance, which is concerning as aminoglycosides are often a last resort for treating multi-resistant infections. Acinetobacter baumannii was the most dominant pathogen, rather than Escherichia coli, and a weak negative correlation between Escherichia coli and two other dominant pathogens (Acinetobacter baumannii and Bacteroides uniformis) suggests that using Escherichia coli as a biological indicator for all pathogens in WWTP effluents may not be appropriate. The Getah virus was the most dominant virus found in global WWTP effluents. Our study presents a comprehensive global-scale investigation of microbial risk factors in WWTP effluents, providing valuable insights into the potential risks associated with WWTP effluents and contributing to the monitoring and control of these risks.

Release of phosphorus through pretreatment of waste activated sludge differs essentially from that of carbon and nitrogen resources: Comparative analysis across four wastewater treatment facilities

The accumulation of phosphorus in activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) provides potential for phosphorus recovery from sewage. This study delves into the potential for releasing phosphorus from waste activated sludge through two distinct treatment methods-thermal hydrolysis and pH adjustment. The investigation was conducted with activated sludge sourced from four WWTPs, each employing distinct phosphorus removal strategies. The findings underscore the notably superior efficacy of pH adjustment in solubilizing sludge phosphorus compared to the prevailing practice of thermal hydrolysis, widely adopted to enhance sludge digestion. The reversibility of phosphorus release within pH fluctuations spanning 2 to 12 implies that the release of sludge phosphorus can be attributed to the dissolution of phosphate precipitates. Alkaline sludge treatment induced the concurrent liberation of COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus through alkaline hydrolysis of sludge biomass and the dissolution of iron or aluminium phosphates, offering potential gains in resource recovery and energy efficiency.

Occurrence, transmission and risks assessment of pathogens in aquatic environments accessible to humans

Pathogens are ubiquitously detected in various natural and engineered water systems, posing potential threats to public health. However, it remains unclear which human-accessible waters are hotspots for pathogens, how pathogens transmit to these waters, and what level of health risk associated with pathogens in these environments. This review collaboratively focuses and summarizes the contamination levels of pathogens on the 5 water systems accessible to humans (natural water, drinking water, recreational water, wastewater, and reclaimed water). Then, we showcase the pathways, influencing factors and simulation models of pathogens transmission and survival. Further, we compare the health risk levels of various pathogens through Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA), and assess the limitations of water-associated QMRA application. Pathogen levels in wastewater are consistently higher than in other water systems, with no significant variation for Cryptosporidium spp. among five water systems. Hydraulic conditions primarily govern the transmission of pathogens into human-accessible waters, while environmental factors such as temperature impact pathogens survival. The median and mean values of computed public health risk levels posed by pathogens consistently surpass safety thresholds, particularly in the context of recreational waters. Despite the highest pathogens levels found in wastewater, the calculated health risk is significantly lower than in other water systems. Except pathogens concentration, variables like the exposure mode, extent, and frequency are also crucial factors influencing the public health risk in water systems. This review shares valuable insights to the more accurate assessment and comprehensive management of public health risk in human-accessible water environments.

Paradigm shift in Nutrient-Energy-Water centered sustainable wastewater treatment system through synergy of bioelectrochemical system and anaerobic digestion

With advancements in research and the necessity of improving the performance of bioelectrochemical system (BES), coupling anaerobic digestion (AD) with BES is crucial for energy gain from wastewater and bioremediation. Hybridization of BES-AD concept opens new avenues for pollutant degradation, carbon capture and nutrient-resource recovery from wastewater. The strength of merging BES-AD lies in synergy, and this approach was employed to differentiate fads from strategies with the potential for full-scale implementation and making it an energy-positive system. The integration of BES and AD system increases the overall performance and complexity of combined system and the cost of operation. From a technical standpoint, the primary determinants of BES-AD feasibility for field applications are the scalability and economic viability. High potential market for such integrated system attract industrial partners for more industrial trials and investment before commercialization. However, BES-AD with high energy efficacy and negative economics demands performance boost.

Research progress of the effects of bisphenol analogues on the intestine and its underlying mechanisms: A review

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues have prompted rising concerns, especially in terms of human safety, due to its broad use and ubiquity throughout the ecosystem. Numerous studies reported various adverse effects of bisphenols, including developmental disorders, reproductive toxicity, cardiovascular toxicity, and so on. There is increasing evidence that bisphenols can enter the gastrointestinal tract. Consequently, it is important to investigate their effects on the intestine. Several in vivo and in vitro studies have examined the impacts of bisphenols on the intestine. Here, we summarized the literature concerning intestinal toxicity of bisphenols over the past decade and presented compelling evidence of the link between bisphenol exposure and intestinal disorders. Experiment studies revealed that even at low levels, bisphenols could promote intestinal barrier dysregulation, disrupt the composition and diversity of intestinal microbiota as well as induce an immunological response. Moreover, possible underlying mechanisms of these effects were discussed. Because of a lack of empirical data, the potential risk of bisphenol exposure in humans is still unidentified, particularly regarding intestinal disorders. Thus, we propose to conduct additional epidemiological investigations and animal experiments to elucidate the associations between bisphenol exposure and human intestinal health and reveal underlying mechanisms to develop preventative and therapeutic techniques.

Achievement of Target Gain Larger than Unity in an Inertial Fusion Experiment

On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain G_{target} of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven" (or G_{target}>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Abu-Shawareb et al. (Indirect Drive ICF Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.075001]. This achievement is the culmination of more than five decades of research and gives proof that laboratory fusion, based on fundamental physics principles, is possible. This Letter reports on the target, laser, design, and experimental advancements that led to this result.

Bioconversion of volatile fatty acids from organic wastes to produce high-value products by photosynthetic bacteria: A review

Anaerobic fermentation of organic waste to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production is a relatively mature technology. VFAs can be used as a cheap and readily available carbon source by photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) to produce high value-added products, which are widely used in various applications. To better enhance the VFAs obtained from organic wastes for PSB to produce high value-added products, a comprehensive review is needed, which is currently not available. This review systematically summarizes the current status of microbial proteins, H2, poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), and 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) production by PSB utilizing VFAs as a carbon resource. Meanwhile, the metabolic pathways involved in the H2, PHB, CoQ10, and 5-ALA production by PSB were deeply explored. In addition, a systematic resource utilization pathway for PSB utilizing VFAs from anaerobic fermentation of organic wastes to produce high value-added products was proposed. Finally, the current challenges and priorities for future research were presented, such as the screening of efficient PSB strains, conducting large-scale experiments, high-value product separation, recovery, and purification, and the mining of metabolic pathways for the VFA utilization to generate high value-added products by PSB.

Enhancing effluent quality prediction in wastewater treatment plants through the integration of factor analysis and machine learning

Precisely predicting the concentration of nitrogen-based pollutants from the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) remains a challenging yet crucial task for optimizing operational adjustments in WWTPs. In this study, an integrated approach using factor analysis (FA) and machine learning (ML) models was employed to accurately predict effluent total nitrogen (Ntoteff) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3-Neff) concentrations of the WWTP. The input values for the ML models were honed through FA to optimize factors, thereby significantly enhancing the ML prediction accuracy. The prediction model achieved a highest coefficient of determination (R2) of 97.43 % (Ntoteff) and 99.38 % (NO3-Neff), demonstrating satisfactory generalization ability for predictions up to three days ahead (R2 >80 %). Moreover, the interpretability analysis identified that the denitrification factor, the pollutant load factor, and the meteorological factor were significant. The model framework proposed in this study provides a valuable reference for optimizing the operation and management of wastewater treatment.

Association of cord plasma metabolites with birth weight: results from metabolomic and lipidomic studies of discovery and validation cohorts

BACKGROUND

Birth weight is a good predictor of fetal intrauterine growth and long-term health. Although several studies have evaluated the relationship between metabolites and birth weight, no prior study has comprehensively investigated the metabolomic and lipidomic and further validated and quantified meaningful metabolites.

METHODS

Firstly, a pseudotargeted metabolomics approach was applied to detect 2418 metabolites in 504 cord blood samples in the discovery set enrolled from the Wuhan Healthy Baby Cohort (HBC), China. Metabolome-wide association scan (MWAS) analysis and pathway enrichment were applied to discover metabolites and metabolic pathways that were significantly associated with birth weight for gestational age (BWGA) z-score. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the association of metabolites in the most significantly associated pathways with small for gestational age (SGA) and low birth weight (LBW). Subsequently, 350 cord blood samples in a validation cohort were subjected to targeted analysis to validate the metabolites screened from the discovery cohort.

RESULTS

In the discovery set, 513 metabolites were significantly associated with BWGA z-score (PFDR <0.05), of which 298 KEGG-annotated metabolites were included in the pathway analysis. The primary bile acid biosynthesis pathway was the most relevant metabolic pathway associated with BWGA z-score in our study. Elevated cord plasma primary bile acids were associated with lower BWGA z-score and higher odds of SGA or LBW in the discovery and validation cohorts. In the validation set, a 2-fold increase in taurochenodeoxycholic acid (TCDCA) and taurocholic acid (TCA) was associated with 0.10 (95% CI: 0.00, 0.20) and 0.18 (95 %CI: 0.04, 0.31) decrease in BWGA z-score, respectively, after adjusting for covariates. In addition, a 2-fold increase in cord plasma TCDCA and TCA was associated with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.52 (1.00, 2.30) and 1.77 (1.05, 2.98) for SGA, respectively. The adjusted ORs for a 2-fold increase in TCDCA and TCA concentrations were 2.39 (95% CI 1.00, 5.71) and 3.21 (0.96, 10.74) for LBW, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The results indicate a significant association between primary bile acids and lower BWGA z-score, as well as higher risk of SGA and LBW. Abnormalities of primary bile acid metabolism may play an important role in restricted fetal development. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Metal-free electrified membranes for contaminants oxidation: Synergy effect between membrane rejection and nanoconfinement

Electro-Fenton processes are frequently impeded by depletion of metal catalysts, unbalance between H2O2 generation and activation, and low concentration of reactive species (e.g., •OH) in the bulk solution. A metal-free electro-Fenton membrane was fabricated with nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (N-CNT) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). N-CNT acted as a catalyst for both H2O2 generation and activation, while the incorporated RGO served as the second catalyst for H2O2 generation and improved the performance of membrane rejection. The electrified membrane was optimized in terms of nitrogen precursors selection and composition of N-CNT and RGO to achieve optimal coupling between H2O2 generation and activation. The membrane fabricated with 67% mass of N-CNT with urea as the precursor achieved over 95% removal of the target contaminants in a single pass through the membrane with a water flux of 63 L m-2 h-1. This membrane also exhibited efficient transformation of various concentrations of contaminants (i.e., 1-10 mg L-1) over a broad range of pH (i.e., 3-9). Due to its good durability and low energy consumption, the metal-free electro-Fenton membrane holds promise for practical water treatment application. The concentration-catalytic oxidation model elucidated that the elevated contaminant concentration near the membrane surface enhanced the transformation rate by 40%. The nanoconfinement enhanced the transformation rate constant inside the membrane by a factor of 105 because of elevated •OH concentration inside the nanopores. Based on the prediction of this model, the configuration of the membrane reactor has been optimized.

Highly efficient removal of ozone by amorphous manganese oxides synthesized with a simple hydrothermal method

Amorphous manganese oxides (MnOx) were synthesized by facile hydrothermal reactions between potassium permanganate and manganese acetate. Synthesis parameters, including hydrothermal time and temperature and molar ratio of precursors, significantly affected the ozone removal performance and structure property of MnOx. Amorphous MnOx-1.5, which was prepared at the Mn2+/Mn7+ molar ratio of 1.5 under hydrothermal conditions of 120°C and 2 hr, showed the highest ozone removal rate of 93% after 480 min at the room temperature, RH (relative humidity) = 80% and WHSV (weight hourly space velocity) = 600 L/(g·hr). The morphology, composition and structure of catalysts were investigated with X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Raman spectra, N2 physisorption, field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), O2 temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS). It was confirmed that high catalytic activity of amorphous MnOx for ozone removal was mainly ascribed to its abundant oxygen vacancies, high oxygen mobility and large specific surface area.

Biomolecular insights into the inhibition of heavy metals on reductive dechlorination of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in Pseudomonas sp. CP-1

Influences of heavy metal exposure to the organohalide respiration process and the related molecular mechanism remain poorly understood. In this study, a non-obligate organohalide respiring bacterium, Pseudomonas sp. strain CP-1, was isolated and its molecular response to the five types of commonly existed heavy metal ions were thoroughly investigated. All types of heavy metal ions posed inhibitory effects on 2,4,6-trichlorophenol dechlorination activity and cell growth with the varied degree. Exposure to Cu (II) showed the most serious inhibitive effects on dechlorination even at the lowest concentration of 0.05 mg/L, while the inhibition by As (V) was the least with the removal kinetic constant k decreased to 0.05 under 50 mg/L. Further, multi-omics analysis found compared with Cu (II), As (V) exposure led to the insignificant downregulation of a variety of biosynthesis processes, which would be one possible account for the less inhibited activity. More importantly, the inhibited mechanisms on the organohalide respiration catabolism of strain CP-1 were firstly revealed. Cu (II) stress severely downregulated NADH generation during TCA cycle and electron donation of organohalide respiration process, which might decrease the reducing power required for organohalide respiration. While both Cu (II) and As (Ⅴ) inhibited substrate level phosphorylation during TCA cycle, as well as electron transfer and ATP generation during organohalide respiration. Meanwhile, CprA-2 was confirmed as the responsible reductive dehalogenase in charge of 2,4,6-TCP dechlorination, and transcriptional and proteomic studies confirmed the directly inhibited gene transcription and expression of CprA-2. The in-depth reveal of inhibitory effects and mechanism gave theoretical supports for alleviating heavy metal inhibition on organohalide respiration activity in groundwater co-contaminated with organohalides and heavy metals.

Occurrence, fate and potential health risks of antibiotic resistomes in a constructed wetlands-reservoir ecosystem for drinking water source improvement

The development of effective and feasible engineering technologies to control the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pathogenic antibiotic-resistant bacteria (PARB) form drinking water sources is urgently needed for ensuring drinking water safety. In this study, metagenomic analysis was applied to systematically explore the full profiles, removal, and potential health risks of antibiotic resistomes in a large constructed wetlands-reservoir ecosystem (CWs-R) for drinking water source improvement. A total of 343 ARG subtypes belonging to 18 ARG types were identified from water and sediment samples in the CWs-R ecosystem, with an average abundance of 0.339 copies/cell, and bacitracin and multidrug resistance genes were the predominant ARG types in the water and sediment, respectively. The CWs-R ecosystem showed an excellent removal efficiency of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in water, with the total removal rate reaching 64.82 % and 77.09 %, respectively, among which the emergent plant zone and ecological storage unit played major roles. The metagenomic assembly tracked many mobile ARGs and opportunistic pathogens in the CWs-R ecosystem and identified 19 contigs as ARG-carrying pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumonia. Overall, the CWs-R ecosystem has an important role in reducing the potential public health risks posed by antibiotic resistomes in drinking water sources but still cannot fully eliminate them. Therefore, we further classified water and sediment samples in the CWs-R ecosystem and identified potential ARGs and PARB indicators based on the metagenomic analysis results by considering the potential for horizontal transfer of ARGs to opportunistic pathogens. Taken together, this work demonstrates the CWs-R ecosystem as an economical and feasible engineering technology to reduce the dissemination of antibiotic resistomes in the drinking water source, provides useful information for monitoring and controlling antibiotic resistance in similar water sources, and ensures biosafety of drinking water.

Application of high-throughput sequencing technologies and analytical tools for pathogen detection in urban water systems: Progress and future perspectives

The ubiquitous presence of pathogenic microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa, in urban water systems poses a significant risk to public health. The emergence of infectious waterborne diseases mediated by urban water systems has become one of the leading global causes of mortality. However, the detection and monitoring of these pathogenic microorganisms have been limited by the complexity and diversity in the environmental samples. Conventional methods were restricted by long assay time, high benchmarks of identification, and narrow application sceneries. Novel technologies, such as high-throughput sequencing technologies, enable potentially full-spectrum detection of trace pathogenic microorganisms in complex environmental matrices. This review discusses the current state of high-throughput sequencing technologies for identifying pathogenic microorganisms in urban water systems with a concise summary. Furthermore, future perspectives in pathogen research emphasize the need for detection methods with high accuracy and sensitivity, the establishment of precise detection standards and procedures, and the significance of bioinformatics software and platforms. We have compiled a list of pathogens analysis software/platforms/databases that boast robust engines and high accuracy for preference. We highlight the significance of analyses by combining targeted and non-targeted sequencing technologies, short and long reads technologies, sequencing technologies, and bioinformatic tools in pursuing upgraded biosafety in urban water systems.

[Clinical and pathological features of 20 cases of congenital hepatic fibrosis]

Objective: To investigate the clinical and pathological features of congenital hepatic fibrosis (CHF). Methods: The clinical and pathological findings of 20 patients diagnosed with CHF from 2017 to 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Among the 20 patients, 8 were males and 12 were females with a median age of 21.5 years. Mostly patients were admitted to the hospital with cirrhosis, portal hypertension and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Pathological features were diffuse fibrosis in the portal area, formation of fibrous septa of varying width, segmentation of the liver parenchyma, with hyperplasia of small bile ducts. Among them, 1 case (5%) was complicated with Caroli's disease, and 1 case (5%) was HNF1α hepatocellular adenoma. IHC GS showed that was positively expressed in acinar region 3 in 75% cases. Conclusion: CHF is mainly manifested by portal hypertension and its complications. Histopathology is the gold standard for diagnosis. The possibility of CHF should be considered first in children and adolescents with portal hypertension but no history of hepatitis, and complicated kidney disease. The positive pattern of acinus-3 region of GS in IHC is helpful for the diagnosis of CHF.

The added value of coronary CTA in chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention: a systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVES

To systematically investigate and summarize the utility of coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) in the management of chronic total occlusion (CTO)-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

METHODS

The authors searched the four databases between 2005 and 2023 for studies investigating the role of CCTA and invasive coronary angiograms (ICA) images when used as the pre-procedural tool for CTO-PCI. Efficacy and safety of CCTA in CTO-PCI treatment as a pre-procedural assessment tool was evaluated.

RESULTS

Forty-seven studies were finally chosen for this systematic review. CCTA had a high degree of agreement with ICA when applied for J-CTO scoring system. A J-CTO (Multicenter CTO Registry in Japan) score > 3, together with calcification, occlusion length ≥ 20 mm, blunt stump, and bending > 45° were shared imaging risk factors on both ICA and CCTA for technique failure and guidewire crossing over 30 min. Additionally, negative remodeling and multiple diseased vessel were significant indicators on CCTA. Although patients with pre-procedural CCTA showed a trend of higher success rate and easier guidewire crossing, and CCTA showed a slightly higher predictive accuracy for process success, no significant improvement in post-PCI major adverse cardiac events of using CCTA for assessment has been achieved.

CONCLUSIONS

CCTA is a safe and effective pre-operative tool of CTO-PCI. Except for the shared imaging risk factors with ICA for a hard CTO-PCI including calcification, occlusion length ≥ 20 mm, blunt stump, bending > 45°, and J-CTO score > 3, factors like negative remodeling and multiple diseased vessel were also recognized as significant pre-operative assessment indicators on CCTA.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT

A pre-procedural assessment based on coronary computed tomographic angiography has the potential to aid in the management of chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention.

Natural zeolite enhances anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge: Insights into the performance and the role of biofilm

Anaerobic digestion is widely employed for the treatment of waste activated sludge (WAS) due to its advantages like simultaneous energy recovery and sludge stabilization, promoting carbon-neutral operation of wastewater treatment plants. Natural zeolite, a low-cost and eco-friendly additive, has the potential to improve methane production from anaerobic digestion. This study investigated the effects of natural zeolite on anaerobic digestion when the substrate was WAS. It was found that methane production potential in response to natural zeolite was dosage-dependent. The optimal dosage was 0.1 g zeolite/g volatile suspended solids (VSS), with a methane yield of 181.89 ± 6.75 mL/g VSS, which increased by 20.1% compared to that of the control. Although the methane yields with other dosages of natural zeolite were higher than that of control, they were lesser than that with 0.1 g zeolite/g VSS. Natural zeolite affected transfer and conversion of proteins much more than polysaccharides in liquid phase and extracellular polymeric substances. In anaerobic digestion, natural zeolite had with little effects on WAS solubilization, while it improved hydrolysis, acidification, and methanogenesis. The dosages of natural zeolite did have significant effects on bacterial communities in biofilm rather than suspension, while the archaeal communities in biofilm and suspension were all greatly related to natural zeolite dosages. The developed biofilms promoted richness and functionality of microbial communities. The syntrophic metabolism relationships between methanogens and bacteria were improved, which was proved by selective enrichment of Methanosarcina, Syntrophomonas, and Petrimonas. The findings of this work provided some new solutions for promoting methane production from WAS, and the roles of natural zeolite in anaerobic digestion.

Contribution identification of hydrolyzed products of potassium ferrate on promoting short-chain fatty acids production from waste activated sludge

Potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) has been extensively employed to promote short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) because of its potent oxidizing property and formation of alkaline hydrolyzed products (potassium hydroxide, KOH and ferric hydroxide, Fe(OH)3). However, whether K2FeO4 actually works as dual functions of both an oxidizing agent and an alkalinity enhancer during the anaerobic fermentation process remains uncertain. This study aims to identify the contributions of hydrolyzed products of K2FeO4 on SCFAs production. The results showed that K2FeO4 did not execute dual functions of oxidization and alkalinity in promoting SCFAs production. The accumulation of SCFAs using K2FeO4 treatment (183 mg COD/g volatile suspended solids, VSS) was less than that using either KOH (192 mg COD/g VSS) or KOH & Fe(OH)3 (210 mg COD/g VSS). The mechanism analysis indicated that the synergistic effects caused by oxidization and alkalinity properties of K2FeO4 did not happen on solubilization, hydrolysis, and acidogenesis stages, and the inhibition effect caused by K2FeO4 on methanogenesis stage at the initial phase was more severe than that of its hydrolyzed products. It was also noted that the inhibition effects of K2FeO4 and its hydrolyzed products on the methanogenesis stage could be relieved during a longer sludge retention time, and the final methane yields using KOH or KOH & Fe(OH)3 treatment were higher than that using K2FeO4, further confirming that dual functions of K2FeO4 were not obtained. Therefore, K2FeO4 may not be an alternative strategy for enhancing the production of SCFAs from WAS compared to its alkaline hydrolyzed products. Regarding the strong oxidization property of K2FeO4, more attention could be turned to the fates of refractory organics in the anaerobic fermentation of WAS.

Polar electric field-modulated peroxymonosulfate selective activation for removal of organic contaminants via non-radical electron transfer process

Nonradical electron transfer process (ETP) in peroxomonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is regarded promising for selective degradation of organic contaminants in water, however, the subjective modulation strategy and the definitive mechanistic elucidation of ETP are still lacking. Herein, we proposed a heretofore unreported yet efficient ETP indution approach by construction of polar electrical field on biochar via nonmetallic elements co-doping. Physicochemical characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations verified the electronegativity difference among boron, nitrogen, and sulfur elements bestowed robust local electric fields on biochar surface (BC-BNS), which effectively enhanced the adsorption complexation and charge transfer between biochar and PMS. Compared to the other single-doped or co-doped biochar, BC-BNS exhibited superior catalytic performance of PMS activation for degradation of atrazine (ATZ) (kobs=0.036 min-1), as well as various kinds of electron-rich organics. The remarkable catalytic degradation capacity was further verified in various aqueous matrices and background factors, representing the excellent selectivity. Analysis of contribution from reactive oxygen species and electrochemical testing together substantiated the role of polar electric fields in facilitating the modulation from singlet oxygen (1O2) to ETP as a prevailing mechanism. DFT calculations and apparent interactions revealed the dissociation of S-O bond was thermodynamically favored within this potent localized electric field, which further induced the cleavage of OO bond and ultimately promoted the dual electron transfer between ATZ and PMS. The superiority of BC-BNS/PMS system was further validated with the low ecotoxicity caused by enhanced dechlorination, the low energy consumption, and the long-term effectiveness. The novel modulation principle and atomic-level mechanism exploration gave suggestions for advancing ETP-dominated AOP to remove recalcitrant contaminants during water treatment and restoration.

Highly Efficient Coremoval of Nitrate and Phosphate Driven by a Sulfur-Siderite Composite Reactive Filler toward Secondary Effluent Polishing

Reactive fillers consisting of reduced sulfur and iron species (SFe-ReFs) have received increasing attention in tertiary wastewater treatment for nitrate and phosphate coremoval. However, the existing SFe-ReFs suffer from either low performance (e.g., pyrrhotite and pyrite) or unsatisfactory use in terms of combustible risk and residual nonreactive impurities (e.g., sulfur mixing with natural iron ores). Here, we developed a new type of sulfur-siderite composite ReF (SSCReF) with a structure of natural siderite powders eventually embedded into sulfur. SSCReFs exhibited many excellent properties, including higher mechanical strengths and hardness and especially much poorer ignitability compared to pure sulfur. By using SSCReF to construct packed-bed reactors, the highest denitrification and dephosphorization rates reached 829.70 gN/m3/d (25 wt % siderite) and 36.70 gP/m3/d (75 wt % siderite), respectively. Dephosphorization was demonstrated to be dependent on sulfur-driven denitrification, in which the acid produced from the later process promoted Fe(II) dissolution, which then directly combined with phosphate to form vivianite or further converted into phosphate adsorbents (ferrihydrite, a green rust-like compound). Water flush was an effective way to finally wash out these surface deposited Fe-P compounds, as well as those nonreactive impurities (Si and Al-bearing compounds) detached from SSCReF. Such a highly efficient and safe SSCReF holds considerable application potential in secondary effluent polishing.

Insights into the roles and mechanisms of a green-prepared magnetic biochar in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Methane is one of the most promising renewable energies to alleviate energy crisis or replace fossil fuels, which can be recovered from anaerobic digestion of bio-wastes. However, the engineering application of anaerobic digestion is always hindered by low methane yield and production rate. This study revealed the roles and mechanisms of a green-prepared magnetic biochar (MBC) in promoting methane production performance from waste activated sludge. Results showed that the methane yield reached 208.7 mL/g volatile suspended solids with MBC additive dosage of 1 g/L, increasing by 22.1 % compared to that in control. Mechanism analysis demonstrated that MBC could promote hydrolysis, acidification, and methanogenesis stages. This was because the properties of biochar were upgraded by loading nano-magnetite, such as specific surface area, surface active sites, and surface functional groups, which made MBC have greater potential to mediate electron transfer. Correspondingly, the activity of α-glucosidase and protease respectively increased by 41.7 % and 50.0 %, and then the hydrolysis performances of polysaccharides and proteins were improved. Also, MBC improved the secretion of electroactive substances like humic substances and cytochrome C, which could promote extracellular electron transfer. Furthermore, Clostridium and Methanosarcina, as well-known electroactive microbes, were selectively enriched. The direct interspecies electron transfer between them was established via MBC. This study provided some scientific evidences to comprehensively understand the roles of MBC in anaerobic digestion, with important implications for achieving resource recovery and sludge stabilization.

Understanding the coordination behavior of antibiotics: Take tetracycline as an example

Gaining insight into the occurrence states of residual antibiotics is crucial to demystify their environmental behavior. However, the complexation of heteroatoms functioned on antibiotic molecules to metal ions in the water environment is not fully understood. This study reports that a fluorescence response was unexpectedly triggered by tetracycline (TC) and Al3+, serving as solid evidence to visualize the Al3+-TC coordination reaction. Differential electron absorption spectroscopy shows a quantifiable signal of the redshifted n-π* transition with a coordination reaction, which is also proportional to the fluorescence. The occurrence of Al3+-complexed TC also caused a split in retention time in liquid chromatogram. The TC ligands were re-released in the presence of stronger ligands competing for central Al3+. The complex ratio of Al3+-TC is confirmed to be 1:1 using Job's plot with a stability constant of 1.01 × 106. Quantum chemical computations coupled with Gibbs free energy analysis simulated the formation of octahedral Al3+-TC configuration through a spontaneous bidentate chelation. This study helps convey a broad consensus and opens a new door in the mechanistic study of metal-involved antibiotic transformation process, leading to a better understanding that can ultimately be essential to reach the final goal of alleviating the antibiotic crisis.

Environmental occurrence, risk, and removal strategies of pyrazolones: A critical review

Pyrazolones, widely used as analgesic and anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals, have become a significant concern because of their persistence and widespread presence in engineered (e.g., wastewater treatment plants) and natural environments. Thus, the urgent task is to ensure the effective and cost-efficient removal of pyrazolones. Advanced oxidation processes are the most commonly used removal method. Furthermore, the biodegradation of pyrazolones has been exploited using microbial communities or pure strains; however, screening for efficient degrading bacteria and clarifying the biodegradation mechanisms required further research. In this critical review, we overview the environmental occurrence of pyrazolones, their potential ecological health risks, and their corresponding removal techniques (e.g., O3 oxidation, photocatalysis, and Fenton-like process). We also emphasize the prospects for the risk and contamination control of pyrazolones in various environments using physicochemical-biochemical coupling technology. Collectively, the environmental occurrence of pyrazolones poses significant public health concerns, necessitating heightened attention and the implementation of effective methods to minimize their environmental risks.

Influence Mechanism of Gas Pressure on Multiscale Dynamic Apparent Diffusion-Permeability of Coalbed Methane

The permeability and diffusion coefficient of coal show multiscale characteristics due to the influence of multiscale pore sizes. The gas pressure will continuously decrease during the coalbed methane (CBM) extraction. However, there are contradictory perceptions in the effect of gas pressure on the diffusion coefficient and permeability. Therefore, it is essential to clarify the influence mechanism of gas pressure on multiscale diffusion-seepage. Diffusion-seepage experiments are carried out using particle coal and cylindrical coal without stress loading. Meanwhile, seepage experiments measured by the steady-state method are conducted under stress loading. The results show that the apparent diffusion coefficient is dynamically attenuated with time in the experiments of particle and cylindrical coal. A new model of multiscale dynamic apparent diffusion is proposed. The mechanism of gas flow in multiscale pores is elucidated. The multiscale pores determine the attenuation of the diffusivity and permeability of coal. The initial apparent permeability decreases and then increases with the increase of gas pressure, which is caused by the effect of gas pressure stretching and multiscale flow regime. Three patterns of permeability with gas pressure, monotonically increasing, monotonically decreasing, and U-shaped changes, will occur.

High Resolution Imaging with Focused kV X-Rays for Small Animal Radio-Neuromodulation

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

High precision radiotherapy for small animal radio-neuromodulation requires conformal treatment to very small targets down to 2.5 mm. A focused kV technique based on novel usage of polycapillary x-ray lenses can focus x-ray beams to <0.2 mm in diameter, which is ideal for such uses. Such application also requires high resolution CT images for treatment planning and setup, which was hard to achieve using conventional x-ray tube. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of using a virtual focal spot generated with an x-ray lens to perform high-resolution CBCT acquisition.

MATERIALS/METHODS

The experiment with x-ray lens was set up on an x-ray tabletop system to generate a virtual focal spot. A pinhole image was acquired for the virtual focal spot and compared with the one acquired with the conventional focal spot without the lens. The planar imaging resolution with and without the lens were evaluated using a line pair resolution phantom. The spatial resolution of the two settings were estimated by reconstructing a 0.15-mm wire phantom and comparing its full width half maximum (FWHM). A CBCT scan of a rodent head was also acquired to further demonstrate the improved resolution using the x-ray lens.

RESULTS

Compared to conventional imaging acquisition with a measured x-ray focal spot of 0.395 mm FWHM, the virtual focal spot size was measured at 0.175 mm. The reduction in focal spot size with lens leads to an almost doubled planar imaging resolution and a 26% enhancement in 3D spatial resolution. A realistic CBCT acquisition of a rodent head mimicked the imaging acquisition step for radio-neuromodulation and further showed the improved visualization for fine structures.

CONCLUSION

This work demonstrated that the focused kV x-ray technique was capable of generating small focal spot size of <0.2 mm. The proposed method provides an adaptive imaging platform to acquire x-ray and CBCT images for treatment planning and setup with improved spatial resolution compared to conventional CBCT image acquisition.

Automated machine learning-based models for predicting and evaluating antibiotic removal in constructed wetlands

Machine learning models can improve antibiotic removal performance in constructed wetlands (CWs) by optimizing the operation process. However, robust modeling approaches for revealing the complex biochemical treatment process of antibiotics in CWs are still lacking. In this study, two automated machine learning (AutoML) models achieved good performance with different sizes of the training dataset (mean absolute error = 9.94-13.68, coefficient of determination = 0.780-0.877), demonstrating the ability to predict antibiotic removal performance without human intervention. Explainable analysis results (the variable importance and Shapley additive explanations) revealed that the variable substrate type was more influential than the variables of influent wastewater quality and plant type. This study proposed a potential approach to comprehensively understanding the complex effects of key operational variables on antibiotic removal, which serve as a reference for optimizing operational adjustments in the CW process.

Volatile fatty acids bio-production using extracellular polymeric substances disengaged from sludge for carbon source recycling

Excessive waste-activated sludge (WAS) and insufficient carbon source (CS) for biological nitrogen removal (BNR) often coexist in municipal sewage treatment. Although the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from WAS has been recognized as a promising solution, the development is limited by low VFAs production efficiency and dewatering deterioration of sludge. This study extracted the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from sludge by low-temperature thermal-hydrolysis (LTH) and high-speed hydro-cyclone (HSHC) pretreatment and recovered it for high-quality VFAs bio-production in thermophilic fermentation. Microbial mechanism analysis disclosed that interspecific interaction networks composed of functional flora, which accumulate VFAs by bio-converting EPS primarily and supplemented by EPS synthesis, guaranteed the efficient bio-production of VFAs. This process scheme shows promise in providing alternative denitrification CSs and avoiding deterioration of sludge dewaterability.

Dual-layer spectral computed tomography aortography using a seventy-five-percent-reduced iodine dose protocol and multiparameter spectral imaging: comparison with conventional computed tomography imaging

Background

Computed tomography angiography (CTA) is the recommended diagnostic and follow-up imaging modality for acute aortic dissection (AD). However, the high-contrast medium burden associated with repeated CT aortography follow-ups remains a significant concern. This prospective study aimed to assess whether an ultra-low contrast dose (75% cutoff) aortic CTA protocol on dual-layer spectral CT could achieve comparable image quality with the full dose protocol. We also investigated the image quality of the virtual noncontrast (VNC) images derived from the ultra-low dose protocol.

Methods

This study included 37 consecutive patients who were referred to aortic CTA from May 2022 to August 2022. The enrolled patients underwent full-dose contrast CTA and ultra-low dose (reduced to 25% of conventional) contrast CTA on dual-layer spectral CT in 1 day. Virtual monochromatic images (VMIs) were reconstructed with 40 and 70 keV. The VNC images were reconstructed for both protocols. Objective image quality evaluation, recorded as signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs), was compared between the groups using 1-way analysis of variance and post hoc analysis with Bonferroni correction. Subjective image quality was also compared between the groups. Finally, VNC images derived from the low-dose (VNClow) and full-dose (VNCfull) protocols were compared to the true noncontrast (TNC) images.

Results

Neither CNR nor SNR was lower for the 40-keV images reconstructed from the ultra-low dose group compared to the conventional images. Both were significantly higher than those of the 70-keV images. Regarding subjective image quality, vessel enhancement was not significantly different between the 40-keV VMI and full-dose images [ascending aorta (AAO): 4.37±0.46 vs. 4.57±0.48, P=0.096; brachiocephalic arteries: 4.34±0.45 vs. 4.51±0.49, P=0.152; abdominal aortic side branch: 4.42±0.48 vs. 4.51±0.49, P=0.480]. The VNClow images were similar to the TNC images but significantly different from the VNCfull images (P<0.001).

Conclusions

Ultra-low contrast aortic CTA with a 75%-reduced iodine dose using dual-layer spectral CT and the derived VNC achieved image quality comparable to that of conventional CTA and TNC images.

Effects of alkaline biochar on nitrogen transformation with fertilizer in agricultural soil

The loss and negative impacts of nitrogen from fertilized soils remain a global challenge in agricultural field. Ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) leaching, together with volatile ammonia loss are the main pathways of nitrogen loss. To improve nitrogen availability, alkaline biochar with improved adsorption capacities is a promising soil amendment. This study was objected to investigate the effects of alkaline biochar (ABC, pH 8.68) on nitrogen mitigation, the effects on nitrogen loss, and the interactions among the mixed soils (biochar, nitrogen fertilizer, and soil) under both pot and field experiments. From pot experiments, ABC addition resulted in the poor reservation of NH4+-N which converted to volatile NH3 under higher alkaline environments, mainly occurring in the first 3 days. But after, NO3--N could be largely retained in surface soil by ABC addition. The reservation of NO3--N by ABC offsets the loss of volatile NH3, and ABC ultimately showed positive reservations of nitrogen with fertilization. In the field experiment, the addition of urea inhibitor (UI) addition could inhibit the volatile NH3 loss caused by ABC mainly in the first week. The long-term operation demonstrated that ABC supported persistent effectiveness in reducing N loss, while UI treatment temporarily delayed the N loss through inhibition of fertilizer hydrolysis. Therefore, the addition of both ABC and UI contributed to reserve soil N in layers (0-50 cm) suitable for crop growth thus improving crops growth.

Cerium-modified amorphous manganese oxides for efficient catalytic removal of ozone

Manganese-based catalysts were widely developed for catalytic removal of ozone, and the low stability and water inactivation are major challenges. To improve removal performance of ozone, three methods were applied to modify amorphous manganese oxides, including acidification, calcination and Ce modification. The physiochemical properties of prepared samples were characterized, and the catalytic activity for ozone removal was evaluated. All modification methods can promote the removal of ozone by amorphous manganese oxides, and Ce modification showed the most significant enhancement. It was confirmed that the introduction of Ce markedly changed the amount and property of oxygen vacancies in amorphous manganese oxides. Superior catalytic activity of Ce-MnO_x can be ascribed to its more content and enhanced formation ability of oxygen vacancies, larger specific surface area and higher oxygen mobility. Furthermore, the durability tests under high relative humidity (80%) determined that Ce-MnO_x showed excellent stability and water resistance. These demonstrate the promising potential of amorphously Ce-modified manganese oxides for catalytic removal of ozone.

Determining the Contribution of Micro/Nanoplastics to Antimicrobial Resistance: Challenges and Perspectives

Microorganisms colonizing the surfaces of microplastics form a plastisphere in the environment, which captures miscellaneous substances. The plastisphere, owning to its inherently complex nature, may serve as a "Petri dish" for the development and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), adding a layer of complexity in tackling the global challenge of both microplastics and ARGs. Increasing studies have drawn insights into the extent to which the proliferation of ARGs occurred in the presence of micro/nanoplastics, thereby increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR). However, a comprehensive review is still lacking in consideration of the current increasingly scattered research focus and results. This review focuses on the spread of ARGs mediated by microplastics, especially on the challenges and perspectives on determining the contribution of microplastics to AMR. The plastisphere accumulates biotic and abiotic materials on the persistent surfaces, which, in turn, offers a preferred environment for gene exchange within and across the boundary of the plastisphere. Microplastics breaking down to smaller sizes, such as nanoscale, can possibly promote the horizontal gene transfer of ARGs as environmental stressors by inducing the overgeneration of reactive oxygen species. Additionally, we also discussed methods, especially quantitatively comparing ARG profiles among different environmental samples in this emerging field and the challenges that multidimensional parameters are in great necessity to systematically determine the antimicrobial dissemination risk in the plastisphere. Finally, based on the biological sequencing data, we offered a framework to assess the AMR risks of micro/nanoplastics and biocolonizable microparticles that leverage multidimensional AMR-associated messages, including the ARGs' abundance, mobility, and potential acquisition by pathogens.

Distinct seasonal variations of dissolved organic matter across two large freshwater lakes in China: Lability profiles and predictive modeling

Biological lability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a crucial indicator of carbon cycle and contaminant attenuation in freshwater lakes. In this study, we employed a multi-stage plug-flow bioreactor and spectrofluorometric indices to characterize the seasonal variations in DOM composition and lability across Poyang Lake (PY) and Lake Taihu (TH), two large freshwater lakes in China with distinct hydrological seasonality. Our findings showed that the export of floodplain-derived organics and river-lake interaction led to a remarkable increase in terrestrial aromatic and humic-like DOM with high molecular weights and long turnover times in PY. Consequently, the labile fraction was extremely low (average LDOC% of 3%) during the rising-to-flood season (spring and summer). Conversely, autochthonous production in TH considerably enriched semi-labile (average SDOC% of 26%) and biodegradable DOM (average BDOC% of 34%) during the phytoplankton bloom to post-bloom season (summer and autumn). This was reflected by the accumulation of low-light-absorbing and protein-like components with high biological and fluorescence indices. In the dry and non-bloom season (winter), the better preservation of humic substances maintained the high molecular weight and humic degree of DOM in PY, while the decay of aquatic plants strengthened autochthonous production, resulting in a similar BDOC% of PY samples (23%-34%) to TH samples (18%-33%). We further applied partial least squares regression using DOM optical indices as predictive proxies, which generated a greater prediction strength for BDOC% (R² = 0.80) compared to SDOC% (R² = 0.57) and LDOC% (R² = 0.28). The regression model identified aromaticity (SUVA₂₅₄) as the most effective and negative predictor and low molecular weight (A₂₅₀/A₃₆₅) as the highly and positively influential factor. Our study provides new evidence that the seasonality of DOM lability profiles is regulated by the trade-off between flow-related variation and phytoplankton production, and presents an approach to describe and predict DOM lability across freshwater lakes.

First Dark Matter Search Results from the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Experiment

The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60 live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9  GeV/c^{2}. The most stringent limit is set for spin-independent scattering at 36  GeV/c^{2}, rejecting cross sections above 9.2×10^{-48}  cm at the 90% confidence level.

Can we evidence-base injury prevention and management in women's football? A scoping review

This review aimed, as part of a larger FIFA project aiming to steer women's football research, to scope literature on any level of competitive football for women, to understand the current quantity of research on women's football injuries. The study reviewed all injury-related papers scoped by a recent scoping review mapping all published women's football research with an updated search performed on 23 February 2021. Eligibility criteria assessment followed the recent scoping review with injury-specific research focus. A total of 497 studies were scoped. Most studies contained an epidemiological (N = 226; 45%) or risk factors assessment (N = 105; 21%). Less assessed areas included financial burden (N = 1; <1%) and injury awareness (N = 5; 1%). 159 studies (32%) assessed injuries of the whole body. The most common single location assessed in the literature was the knee (N = 134, 27%), followed by head/face (N =108, 22%). These numbers were, however, substantially lowered, when subdivided by playing level and age-group. The volume of research focuses especially on descriptive research and specific body locations (head/face and knee). Although information can be taken from studies in other sports, more football-specific studies to support management and prevention of injuries are warranted.

Asymmetric warming reduces the strength of selection pressure of moderate grazing on reproductive phenology in alpine plants

Both warming and grazing already affect the reproductive phenology of alpine plants. However, their effects have mostly been studied in isolation, and their interaction is still unclear. In this study, an asymmetric warming (average + 1.2 °C during daytime and + 1.7 °C during nighttime and + 1.5 °C during summer and + 2.0 °C during winter) with moderate grazing experiment was conducted for four years to determine their individual and interactive effects on the onsets and durations of reproductive phenophases for fifteen alpine plant species on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Individual warming and grazing simultaneously advanced the average start dates and ending dates of budding, flowering and fruiting by 5.3-6.2 days, and further resulted in smaller effects on their durations for most plant species. The interactions between warming and grazing on them varied with plant species and year, which advanced by average 12.1 days for all plant species. The effects of grazing on the temperature sensitivity of the start dates of reproductive phenophases (average by -8.5 days °C^-1) were greater than that of warming alone (average by -3.4 days °C^-1) and warming with grazing (average by -5.5 days °C^-1) for most of the alpine plant species. There were significant effects of the previous phenological events on subsequent reproductive phenophases. Therefore, our results suggested that both warming and grazing advanced reproductive phenophases through altered soil temperature and soil moisture and carry-over effects of previous phenological events on subsequent phenological events. Warming reduced the temperature sensitivity of the start dates of reproductive phenophases to grazing, suggesting that it depressed strength of selection pressure of grazing on the onsets of reproductive phenology in alpine plants.

Insights into response mechanism of anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge to particle sizes of zeolite

Anaerobic digestion has been proved as one promising strategy to simultaneously achieve resource recovery and environmental pollution control for biosolid treatment, and adding exogenous materials is a potential alternative to promote the above process. This study investigated response mechanisms of anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) to particle sizes of zeolite. Results showed that the methane production reached 186.75 ± 7.62 mL/g volatile suspended solids (VSS) with zeolite of the particle size of 0.2-0.5 mm and the additive dosage of 0.1 g/g VSS, which increased by 22% compared to that in control. Mechanism study revealed that zeolite could improve hydrolysis, acidification, and methanogenesis stages. Rapid consumption rates of soluble polysaccharides and proteins were observed, correspondingly, the accumulation of SCFAs were enhanced, and the compositions of SCFAs were optimized. Moreover, the activities of F420 increased by 28% with zeolite, and the syntrophic metabolism between bacteria and methanogens were promoted.

Molecular probing of dissolved organic matter and its transformation in a woolen textile wastewater treatment station

Woolen textile industry produces enormous wastewater (WTIW) with high pollution loads, and needs to be treated by wastewater treatment stations (WWTS) before centralized treatment. However, WTIW effluent still contains many biorefractory and toxic substances; thus, comprehensive understandings of dissolved organic matter (DOM) of WTIW and its transformation are essential. In this study, total quantity indices, size exclusion chromatography, spectral methods, and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) were used for comprehensively characterizing DOM and its transformation during full-scale treatments, including influent, regulation pool (RP), flotation pool (FP), up-flow anaerobic sludge bed (UA), anaerobic/oxic (AO) and effluent. DOM in influent featured a large molecular weight (5-17 kDa), toxicity (0.201 HgCl₂ mg/L), and a protein content of 338 mg C/L. FP largely removed 5-17 kDa DOM with the formation of 0.45-5 kDa DOM. UA and AO removed 698 and 2042 chemicals, respectively, which were primarily saturated components (H/C > 1.5); however, both UA and AO contributed to the formation of 741 and 1378 stable chemicals, respectively. Good correlations were found among water quality indices and spectral/molecular indices. Our study reveals the molecular composition and transformation of WTIW DOM during treatments and encourages the optimization of the employed processes in WWTS.

Radiomic analysis of MRI for prediction of response to induction chemotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients

AIM

To establish and validate radiomic models for response prediction to induction chemotherapy (IC) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) using the radiomic features from pretreatment MRI.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This retrospective analysis included 184 consecutive NPC patients, 132 in the primary cohort and 52 in the validation cohort. Radiomic features were derived from contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging (CE-T1) and T2-weighted imaging (T2-WI) for each subject. The radiomic features were then selected and combined with clinical characteristics to build radiomic models. The potential of the radiomic models was evaluated based on its discrimination and calibration. To measure the performance of these radiomic models in predicting the treatment response to IC in NPC, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), and sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were used.

RESULTS

Four radiomic models were constructed in the present study including the radiomic signature of CE-T1, T2-WI, CE-T1 + T2-WI, and the radiomic nomogram of CE-T1. The radiomic signature of CE-T1 + T2-WI performed well in distinguishing response and non-response to IC in patients with NPC, which yielded an AUC of 0.940 (95% CI, 0.885-0.974), sensitivity of 83.1%, specificity of 91.8%, and accuracy of 87.1% in the primary cohort, and AUC of 0.952 (95% CI, 0.855-0.992), sensitivity of 74.2%, specificity of 95.2%, and accuracy of 82.7% in the validation cohort.

CONCLUSION

MRI-based radiomic models could be helpful for personalised risk stratification and treatment in NPC patients receiving IC.

Microbial diversity, transformation and toxicity of azo dye biodegradation using thermo-alkaliphilic microbial consortia

In this research, the transformation and toxicity of Reactive Red 141 and 239 biodegraded under anaerobic-aerobic conditions as well as metagenomic analysis of Reactive Red 239 degrading microbial consortia collected from Shala Hot spring were investigated. Toxicity of dyes before treatment and after treatment on three plants, fish and microorganisms were done. A halotolerant and thermo-alkaliphilic bacterial consortia decolorizing azo dyes (>98% RR 141 and > 96% RR 239 in 7 h) under optimum conditions of salt concentration (0.5%), temperature (55 °C) and pH (9), were used. Toxicity effect of untreated dyes and treated dyes in Tomato > Beetroot > Cabbage plants, while the effect was Leuconostoc mesenteroides > Lactobacillus plantarum > Escherichia coli in microorganisms. Among fishes, the toxicity effect was highest in Oreochromis niloticus followed by Cyprinus carpio and Clarias gariepinus. The three most dominant phyla that could be in charge of decolorizing RR 239 under anaerobic-aerobic systems were Bacteroidota (22.6-29.0%), Proteobacteria (13.5-29.0%), and Chloroflexi (8.8-23.5%). At class level microbial community structure determination, Bacteroidia (18.9-27.2%), Gammaproteobacteria (11.0-15.8%), Alphaproteobacteria (2.5-5.0%) and Anaerolineae (17.0-21.9%) were dominant classes. The transformation of RR 141 and RR 239 into amine compounds were proposed via high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (HPLC/MS) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Overall, dye containing wastewaters treated under anaerobic-aerobic systems using thermo-alkaliphilic microbial consortia were found to be safe to agricultural (fishes and vegetables) purposes.

Source preventing mechanism of florfenicol resistance risk in water by VUV/UV/sulfite advanced reduction pretreatment

To avoid the inhibition of microbial activity and the emergence of bacterial resistance, effective abiotic pretreatment methods to eliminate the antibacterial activity of target antibiotics before the biotreatment system for antibiotic-containing wastewater are necessary. In this study, the VUV/UV/sulfite system was developed as a pretreatment technique for the source elimination of florfenicol (FLO) resistance risk. Compared with the VUV/UV/persulfate and sole VUV photolysis, the VUV/UV/sulfite system had the highest decomposition rate (0.33 min^‒1) and the highest defluorination (83.0%), resulting in the efficient elimination of FLO antibacterial activity with less than 2.0% mineralization, which would effectively retain the carbon sources for the sludge microorganisms in the subsequent biotreatment process. Furthermore, H• was confirmed to play a more important role in the elimination of FLO antibacterial activity by controlling the environmental conditions for the formation and transformation of reactive species and adding their scavengers. Based on the theoretical calculation and proposed photolytic intermediates, the elimination of FLO antibacterial activity was achieved by dechlorination, defluorination and removal of sulfomethyl groups. When the pretreated FLO-containing wastewater entered the biological treatment unit, the abundance of associated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the relative abundance of integrons were efficiently prevented by approximately 55.4% and 22.9%, respectively. These results demonstrated that the VUV/UV/sulfite system could be adopted as a promising pretreatment option for the source elimination of FLO resistance risk by target decomposition of its responsible structures before the subsequent biotreatment process.

Integrated microbial electrolysis with high-alkali pretreated sludge digestion: Insight into the effect of voltage on methanogenesis and substrate metabolism

Integrated microbial electrolysis with anaerobic digestion is proved to be an effective way to improve methanogenesis efficiency of waste activated sludge (WAS). WAS requires pretreatment for efficient improvement of acidification or methanogenesis efficiency, but excessive acidification may inhibit the methanogenesis. In order to balance these two stages, a method for efficient WAS hydrolysis and methanogenesis has been proposed in this study by high-alkaline pretreatment integrated with microbial electrolysis system. The effects of pretreatment methods and voltage on the normal temperature digestion of WAS have also been further investigated with emphasis on the effects of voltage and substrate metabolism. The results show that compared to low-alkaline pretreatment (pH = 10), high-alkaline pretreatment (pH > 14) can double the SCOD release and promote the VFAs accumulation to 5657 ± 392 mg COD/L, but inhibit the methanogenesis process. Microbial electrolysis can alleviate this inhibition effectively through the rapid consumption of VFAs and speeding up of the methanogenesis process. The optimal methane yield of the integrated system is 120.4 ± 8.4 mL/g VSS at the voltage of 0.5 V. Enzyme activities, high-throughput and gene function prediction analysis reveal that the cathode and anode maintain the activity of methanogens under high substrate concentrations. Voltage positively responded to improved methane yield from 0.3 to 0.8 V, but higher than 1.1 V is found to be unfavorable for cathodic methanogenesis and results in additional power loss. These findings provide a perspective idea for rapid and maximum biogas recovery from WAS.

A global perspective on compositions, risks, and ecological genesis of antibiotic resistance genes in biofilters of drinking water treatment plants

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in biofilters of drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) are regarded to be a remarkable potential health risk to human. A global survey on ARGs in biofilters may help evaluate their risk features as a whole. This study aims to explore the compositions, risks, and ecological genesis of ARGs in the biofilters of DWTPs. In total, 98 metagenomes of DWTP biofilters were collected from Sequence Read Archive  (SRA)  of National center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), and the main ARG types were recognized, with multidrug, bacitracin, and beta-lactam as the first three types. Source water types (surface water vs. groundwater) were found to significantly influence antibiotic resistome, overpassing biofilter media and locations. Although ARG abundances of surface water biofilters were approximately five times higher than that of groundwater biofilters, the risk pattern of ARGs was highly similar between surface water biofilters and groundwater biofilters, and up to 99.61% of the ARGs on average belong to the least risk and unassessed ranks, and only 0.23% the highest risk rank. Monobactam biosynthesis pathway and prodigiosin biosynthesis pathway, two antibiotics biosynthesis pathways, were observed to be positively correlated with several ARG types and total ARG abundance in samples of surface water and groundwater biofilters, respectively, suggesting their potential roles in ecological genesis of ARGs. Overall, the results of this study would deepen our understanding of the ARG risks in biofilters of DWTPs and shed light on their ecological genesis inside.
