Abstract
BACKGROUND The transient outward current (Ito) that mediates early (phase 1) repolarization is conducted by the KCND3-encoded Kv4.3 pore-forming α-subunit. KCND3 gain-of-function mutations have been reported previously as a pathogenic substrate for J wave syndromes (JWS), including the Brugada syndrome and early repolarization syndrome, as well as autopsy-negative sudden unexplained death (SUD). Acacetin, a natural flavone, is a potent Ito current blocker. Acacetin may be a novel therapeutic for KCND3-mediated J wave syndrome. METHODS KCND3-V392I was identified in an 18-year-old male with J wave syndrome/early repolarization syndrome, and a history of cardiac arrest including ventricular tachycardia/ventricular fibrillation and atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter. Pathogenic KCND3 mutation was engineered by site-directed mutagenesis and co-expressed with wild-type KChIP2 in TSA201 cells. Gene-edited/variant-corrected isogenic control and patient-specific pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) from the p. Val392Ile-KCND3-positive patient were generated. Ito currents and action potentials were recorded before and after treatment with Acacetin using the whole cell patch-clamp and multielectrode array technique. Western blot and immunocytochemistry were performed to investigate KCND3 expression. RESULTS KCND3-V392I demonstrated a marked gain-of-function phenotype, increasing peak Ito current density by 92.2% (P<0.05 versus KCND3-WT). KCND3 expression was significantly increased in KCND3-V392I-derived iPSC-CMs (P<0.05 versus isogenic control). While KCND3-WT revealed an IC50 of 7.2±1.0 µmol/L for acacetin effect, 30 µmol/L acacetin dramatically inhibited KCND3-V392I peak Ito current density by 96.2% (P<0.05 versus before Acacetin). Ito was also increased by 60.9% in Kv4.3-V392I iPSC-CM (P<0.05 versus isogenic control iPSC-CM). Ten micromoles per liter acacetin, a concentration approaching its IC50 value, inhibited Ito by ≈50% in patient-derived iPSC-CMs and reduced the accentuated action potential notch displayed in KCND3-V392I-derived iPSC-CMs. CONCLUSIONS This preclinical study provides pharmacological and functional evidence to suggest that Acacetin may be a novel therapeutic for patients with KCND3 gain-of-function-associated J wave syndrome by inhibiting Ito and abolishing the accentuated action potential notch in patient-derived iPSC-CMs.

Abstract
Cancer treatment options have evolved to include immunotherapy and targeted therapy, in addition to traditional chemoradiation. Chemoradiation places the patient at a higher risk of infection through a myelosuppressive effect. High clinical suspicion and early use of antimicrobials play a major role in decreasing any associated morbidity and mortality. This has led to a widespread use of antimicrobials in cancer patients. Antimicrobial use, however, does not come without its perils. Dysbiosis caused by antimicrobial use affects responses to chemotherapeutic agents and is prognostic in the development and severity of certain cancer treatment-related complications such as graft-versus-host disease and Clostridioides difficile infections. Studies have also demonstrated that an intact gut microbiota is essential in the anticancer immune response. Antimicrobial use can therefore modulate responses and outcomes with immunotherapy targeting immune checkpoints. In this review, we highlight the perils associated with antimicrobial use during cancer therapy and the importance of a more judicious approach. We discuss the nature of the pathologic changes in the gut microbiota resulting from antimicrobial use. We explore the effect these changes have on responses and outcomes to different cancer treatment modalities including chemotherapy and immunotherapy, as well as potential adverse clinical consequences in the setting of stem cell transplant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Long-term mortality following tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis in Korea remains unclear.METHODS: The present study used data from the National Health Insurance Service database, an extensive health-related database including most Korean residents. TB patients were identified using International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision coding (A15-19, U88.0-88.1) and the type of anti-TB drug(s) between 2003 and 2016. Long-term mortality and causes of death in TB patients were analysed.RESULTS: A total of 357 211 individuals had TB over the period from 2003 to 2016 and 103 682 died. The mean age of the cohort was 54.7 ± 20.7 years, and 59.8% were male. The survival probability of TB patients at 1, 5, and 10 years after diagnosis was 87.8%, 75.3%, and 63.3%, respectively. High mortality and TB-related death rates were especially prominent in the early stages after TB diagnosis. The overall standardized mortality ratio of TB patients to the general Korean population was 3.23 (95% confidence interval 3.21-3.25).CONCLUSION: Mortality in TB patients was especially high in the early stages of disease after TB diagnosis, and mostly due to TB. This figure was approximately three-times higher than the mortality rate in the general population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE MR imaging is not routinely used to image the extracranial facial nerve. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which this nerve can be visualized with a CISS sequence and to determine the feasibility of using that sequence for locating the nerve relative to tumor. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-two facial nerves in 16 healthy subjects and 4 facial nerves in 4 subjects with parotid gland tumors were imaged with an axial CISS sequence protocol that included 0.8-mm isotropic voxels on a 3T MR imaging system with a 64-channel head/neck coil. Four observers independently segmented the 32 healthy subject nerves. Segmentations were compared by calculating average Hausdorff distance values and Dice similarity coefficients. RESULTS The primary bifurcation of the extracranial facial nerve into the superior temporofacial and inferior cervicofacial trunks was visible on all 128 segmentations. The mean of the average Hausdorff distances was 1.2 mm (range, 0.3-4.6 mm). Dice coefficients ranged from 0.40 to 0.82. The relative position of the facial nerve to the tumor could be inferred in all 4 tumor cases. CONCLUSIONS The facial nerve can be seen on CISS images from the stylomastoid foramen to the temporofacial and cervicofacial trunks, proximal to the parotid plexus. Use of a CISS protocol is feasible in the clinical setting to determine the location of the facial nerve relative to tumor.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction
Given the complexity of left atrial appendage (LAA) structure, current 2D based LAA occluder (LAAO) size prediction system using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has limitations.
Objective
To assess the accuracy of LAAO size determination method by implantation simulation using a 3D printed model compared with a conventional method based on TEE.
Methods
We retrospectively reviewed 57 cases with percutaneous LAAO using Amplatzer Cardiac Plug and Amulet from 2014 to 2018. We excluded cases without cardiac CT (21 cases) or with peri-device leakage or inappropriate position of the device on six months follow up TEE (6 cases), or with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (2 cases). We finally included 28 cases with anatomically and physiologically properly implanted LAAO, using the final size of the implanted devices as a standard for the size prediction accuracy. We generated 3D printing model from cardiac CT images. LAAO size was determined with device implantation simulation using 3D printing model and occluder devices (Figure C), and conventional 2D TEE measurements by two experienced cardiologists who were blinded to the size of the finally implanted device.
Results
The accuracy in size of 3D printed left atrium (LA) models, compared with CT image sources, were validated by measuring the distance between artifacts which were intentionally implanted to LA model during image processing. There was minimal bias (−0.11 mm) between 3D images and printed LA models (Figure A). As plotted in Figure B, LAAO sizing by implantation simulation with 3D printing model showed excellent agreement with actually implanted LAAO size (r=0.927; bias=0.7±2.5), while LAAO sizing by 2D TEE measurements remained poor (r=0.544; bias 2.3±6.7).
Conclusions
LAAO size determination by using 3D printing model of LAA showed excellent accuracy. A prospective study to evaluate the clinical utility of this method should be done in future.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several studies have evaluated the effects of growth hormone (GH) on auxological and biochemical parameters in children with non-GH-deficient, idiopathic short stature (ISS). This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of Growtropin®-II (recombinant human GH) in Korean patients with ISS. METHODS This was a 1-year, open-label, multicenter, phase III randomized trial of Growtropin®-II in Korean patients with ISS. In total, 70 prepubertal subjects (39 males, 31 females) between 4 and 12 years of age were included in the study. All patients were naive to GH treatment. RESULTS Annual height velocity was significantly higher in the treatment group (10.68 ± 1.95 cm/year) than the control group (5.72 ± 1.72, p < 0.001). Increases in height and weight standard deviation scores (SDSs) at 26 weeks were 0.63 ± 0.16 and 0.64 ± 0.46, respectively, for the treatment group, and 0.06 ± 0.15 and 0.06 ± 0.28, respectively, for the control group (p < 0.001). Serum insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) increased significantly in the treatment group at week 26 compared to baseline. However, the SDS for body mass index (BMI) at 26 weeks did not change significantly in either group. Growtropin®-II was well tolerated and safe over 1 year of treatment. CONCLUSIONS One-year GH treatment for prepubertal children with ISS demonstrated increased annualized velocity, height and weight SDSs, and IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels, with a favorable safety profile. Further evaluations are needed to determine the optimal dose, final adult height, and long-term effects of ISS treatment.

Abstract
UNLABELLED To evaluate a possible correlation between bone mineral density (BMD) and age at menarche, the present study used the BMD dataset of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey IV-V (KNHANES IV-V). Age at menarche had a small but significant association with BMD of the lumbar spine in premenopausal Korean females, aged 20-50 years. INTRODUCTION To investigate any correlation between bone mineral density (BMD) and age at menarche in Korean females using data from the fourth and fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES IV-V; 2008-2011). METHODS In total, 37,753 individuals participated in health examination surveys between 2008 and 2011. A total of 5032 premenopausal females aged 20-50 years were eligible. Age, height, weight, and age at menarche were assessed. RESULTS Results from the univariate linear regression and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that age (per 1 year), height (per 1 cm), weight (per 1 kg), exercise (per 1 day/week), familial osteoporosis history (yes), parity (n = 0 to ≥4), and menarche age distribution were associated with BMD of the total femur, femur neck, and lumbar spine. After stratifying the bone area and adjusting for age, parity, alcohol intake, smoking, exercise, and familial osteoporosis history, no effect was seen for the total femur or femur neck. Age at menarche 16~17 and ≥18 years groups were associated with BMD of the lumbar spine only. CONCLUSIONS Age at menarche had a small but significant association with BMD of the lumbar spine in premenopausal Korean females, aged 20-50 years. Females with late menarche may achieve lower peak bone mass at some skeletal sites, which may put them at greater risk for osteoporosis in later life.

Abstract
The present authors describe an uncommon case of iatrogenic bladder stone formation in a patient who underwent surgery for pelvic organ prolapse. A female patient who underwent high uterosacral ligament suspension ten years ago presented with pyuria and irritable bladder symptoms that did not respond to treatment. She had not experienced any specific urinary symptoms during the previous ten years. Patient evaluation revealed bladder stone formation on the non-absorbable suture material used during the previous operation. Cystoscopy during the previous operation did not find the suture material, and the suture knot that was tied extravesically during the operation was found inside the bladder. These strongly suggest delayed migration and rotation of the'suture knot after surgery rather than direct penetration of the bladder during operation. Delayed suture migration is a long-term complication that clinicians should consider in a patient who suffers from recurrent urinary symptoms after pelvic surgery around the bladder.

Abstract
Intestinal inflammation induced with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) is used to study acute or chronic ulcerative colitis in animal models. Decreased gut tissue anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 concentration and mRNA abundance are associated with the development of chronic bowel inflammation. Twelve piglets of 3 days old were fitted with an intragastric catheter and randomly allocated into control and DSS groups by administrating either sterile saline or 1.25 g of DSS/kg body weight (BW) in saline per day, respectively, for 10 days. Growth rate and food conversion efficiency were reduced (p<0.05) in the DSS piglets compared with the control group. Quantitative histopathological grading of inflammation in the jejunum and colon collectively showed that the DSS treatment resulted in 12 fold greater (p<0.05) inflammation severity scoring in the colon than in the jejunum, indicative of chronic ulcerative colitis in the colon. Upper gut permeability endpoint was 27.4 fold higher (p<0.05) in the DSS group compared with the control group. The DSS group had higher concentrations and mRNA abundances (p<0.05) of TNF-alpha and IL-6 in the jejunal and colonic tissues compared with the control group. Colonic concentration and mRNA abundance of IL-10 were reduced (p<0.05), however, jejunal IL-10 mRNA abundance was increased (p<0.05) in the DSS group compared with the control group. In conclusion, administration of DSS at 1.25 g/kg BW for 10 days respectively induced acute inflammation in the jejunum and chronic inflammation and ulcerative colitis in the colon with substantially decreased colonic concentration and mRNA abundance of IL-10 in the young pigs, mimicking the IL-10 expression pattern in humans Associated with chronic bowel inflammation.

Abstract
Cefazolin treatment failure has been observed in high-inoculum infections caused by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) with a cefazolin inoculum effect (CIE). However, data on the characteristics and risk factors for the acquisition of CIE-positive MSSA infection are scarce. CIE positivity was measured as an MIC ≥ 16 μg/ml with a high inoculum (∼5 × 107 CFU/ml). The blaZ gene type was assessed through sequence analysis. The clinical characteristics and risk factors for the acquisition of CIE-positive MSSA infection were assessed. The association between the antimicrobial susceptibility profile and CIE positivity was evaluated. A total of 303 MSSA bacteraemia cases and their corresponding isolates were collected from ten hospitals: 61 (20.1 %) isolates showed a positive CIE; 254 (83.8 %) were positive for the blaZ gene. No significant association was found between CIE positivity and the site of infection. Metastatic cancer (aOR 2.86, 95 % CI, 1.10-7.48) and recent (≤1 month) close contact with a chronically ill patient (aOR 4.69, 95 % CI, 1.76-12.50) were identified as significant risk factors for CIE-positive MSSA infection through multivariate analyses. Resistances to clindamycin (OR 3.55, 95 % CI, 1.62-7.80) and erythromycin (OR 5.00, 95 % CI, 2.50-9.99) were associated with CIE positivity, presenting high specificity (92.9 %) and a negative predictive value (82.3 %). CIE-positive MSSA constituted approximately one-fifth of MSSA bacteraemia cases. Although CIE positivity was not clinically discernible, CIE positivity was associated with clindamycin or erythromycin susceptibility. Therefore, our findings suggest that cefazolin can be used in the treatment of high-inoculum MSSA infection if the isolates are susceptible to clindamycin or erythromycin.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The dysregulation of maternal-fetal immune tolerance is one of the proposed mechanisms leading to preeclampsia. Galectins are key regulator proteins of the immune response in vertebrates and maternal-fetal immune tolerance in eutherian mammals. Previously we found that three genes in a Chr19 cluster encoding for human placental galectin-13 (PP13), galectin-14 and galectin-16 emerged during primate evolution and may confer immune tolerance to the semi-allogeneic fetus. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study involved various methodologies for gene and protein expression profiling, genomic DNA methylation analyses, functional assays on differentiating trophoblasts including gene silencing, luciferase reporter and methylation assays. These methods were applied on placental specimens, umbilical cord blood cells, primary trophoblasts and BeWo cells. Genomic DNA sequences were analyzed for transposable elements, transcription factor binding sites and evolutionary conservation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The villous trophoblastic expression of Chr19 cluster galectin genes is developmentally regulated by DNA methylation and induced by key transcription factors of villous placental development during trophoblast fusion and differentiation. This latter mechanism arose via the co-option of binding sites for these transcription factors through promoter evolution and the insertion of an anthropoid-specific L1PREC2 transposable element into the 5' untranslated region of an ancestral gene followed by gene duplication events. Among placental Chr19 cluster galectin genes, the expression of LGALS13 and LGALS14 is down-regulated in preterm severe preeclampsia associated with SGA. We reveal that this phenomenon is partly originated from the dysregulated expression of key transcription factors controlling trophoblastic functions and galectin gene expression. In addition, the differential DNA methylation of these genes was also observed in preterm preeclampsia irrespective of SGA. CONCLUSIONS These findings reveal the evolutionary origins of the placental expression of Chr19 cluster galectins. The complex dysregulation of these genes in preeclampsia may alter immune tolerance mechanisms at the maternal-fetal interface.

Abstract
The prevalence of anaemia is increasing globally. It has a close association with perioperative blood transfusion which, in turn, results in an increased risk of postoperative complications. Undesirable effects are not only limited to short-term, but also have long-term implications. Despite this, many patients undergo cardiac surgery with undiagnosed and untreated anaemia. We designed a retrospective, observational study to estimate the prevalence of anaemia in patients having cardiac surgery in Auckland District Health Board, blood transfusion rates and associated clinical outcome. Two hundred of seven hundred and twelve (28.1%) patients were anaemic. Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion rates were significantly higher in the anaemic group compared to the non-anaemic group (160 (80%) vs. 192 (38%), p-value <0.0001, RR (CI 95%) 2.133 (1.870-2.433)). Transfusion rates for fresh frozen plasma (FFP), cryoprecipitate and platelets were also higher in the anaemic group. Anaemia was significantly associated with the development of new infection (14 (7%) vs. 15 (2.9%), p-value 0.0193, RR (CI 95%) 2.389 (1.175-4.859)), prolonged ventilation time (47.01 hours vs. 23.59 hours, p-value 0.0076) and prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) stay (80.23 hours vs. 50.27, p-value 0.0011). Preoperative anaemia is highly prevalent and showed a clear link with significantly higher transfusion rates and postoperative morbidity. It is vital that a preoperative management plan for the correction of anaemia should be sought to improve patient safety and outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of community-associated meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is increasing throughout the world and is an important cause of skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) in children and neonates. AIM To describe the successful control of an outbreak caused by a new strain of CA-MRSA in a newborn nursery. METHODS The investigation of the outbreak in July 2012 is reported with the control measures taken. Molecular typing of the MRSA isolates was performed. FINDINGS An outbreak of SSTI caused by CA-MRSA occurred in a newborn nursery. Six neonates were infected in a one-month period [infection rate: 8.5% (6/71)]. A new variant of CA-MRSA was responsible, which was characterized as USA300-related, Panton-Valentine Leucocidin (PVL) positive, arginine catabolic mobile element (ACME) negative, sequence type 8 (ST8), staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) type IVa, agr type I and spa type t008. The outbreak among term neonates followed a rapid transmission pattern and was successfully controlled by implementing various outbreak control measures, including universal chlorhexidine bathing. CONCLUSION This is the first report of a hospital outbreak caused by a USA300-related CA-MRSA clone in Korea. Early recognition and reinforcement of infection control measures are important in decreasing transmission of CA-MRSA in a hospital setting.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of soy sauce on the physicochemical and textural properties of tumbled chicken breasts. Chicken breasts marinated with distilled water (Con), 4% NaCl solution, 4% NaCl and lactic acid solution (pH 4.9), and soy sauce solution (4% salt concentration and pH 4.9) were vacuum tumbled at 3°C for 60 min. The chicken breast marinated with soy sauce solution showed lower lightness and higher redness and yellowness due to the color of the soy sauce. The acidic marinades led to a decrease in pH value of tumbled chicken breast. The acidic marinades increased collagen solubility of sample compared with 4% NaCl solution, resulting in decreased shear force. Water-holding capacity, marination and cooking yields, and solubility of myofibrillar proteins were mainly affected by the presence of salt in the marinade, rather than by pH alternation. Our results suggested that soy sauce marination can improve the tenderness of tumbled chicken breast.

Abstract
Spanish needles (Bidens bipinnata L.) is an annual herb that belongs to a genus of flowering plants in family Asteraceae native to United States, and tropical regions around world. The plant produces important flavonoid compounds quercitin and hyperoside that function as anti-allergens, anti-inflammatories, anti-microbials, and anti-cancer agents. Between July and October 2011 and 2012, white superficial mycelia were observed initially on leaf and stem portions, but later progressed to the flower head. Surveys showed that the disease was widespread in Gwangju and most areas of South Korea. Abundant, necrotic, dark brown spots showing chasmothecia were frequently observed in October and were abundant on the adaxial surface of leaves. Chasmothecia were blackish brown to yellow without typical appendages. They ranged from 51.2 to 71.1 (mean 66.8) μm in diameter. Conidia were formed singly and the primary conidia were ellipsoid, rounded at the apex, truncated base, and ranged from 25.4 to 33.2 (mean 27.3) μm long × 10.2 to 12.2 (mean 11.3) μm wide. Conidiophores were erect, 60.1 to 101.3 (mean 98.3) μm long × 6.2 to 9.2 (mean 7.3) μm wide. From extracted genomic DNA, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region inclusive of 5.8S and 28S rDNA was amplified with ITS1F (5'-TCCGTAGGTGAACCTGCGG-3') and LR5F (5'-GCTATCCTGAGGGAAAC-3'), and LROR (5'-ACCCGCTGAACTTAAGC-3') and LR5F primer sets, respectively. rDNA ITS (GenBank Accession No. JX512555) and 28S (JX512556) homologies of the fungus (EML-BBPW1) represented 99.6% (532/534) and 100% (661/661) identity values with Podosphaera xanthii (syn. P. fusca) AB040349 and P. xanthii (syn. P. fusca) AB462798, respectively. The rDNA sequence analysis revealed that the causal fungus matched P. xanthii (syn. P. fusca), forming a xanthii/fusca group (3,4). A pathogenicity test was performed on three plants in a greenhouse. The treated leaves were sealed in vinyl pack in humid condition for 2 days. Seven days after inoculation, similar symptoms were observed on the inoculated Spanish needles plant leaves. No symptoms were observed on control plants treated with distilled water. Koch's postulates were fulfilled by re-observing the fungal pathogen on the inoculated leaves. Podosphaera (syn. Sphaerotheca) xanthii (or fusca) has been known as an ubiquitous species with a broad host range. So far, five records regarding P. xanthii (=P. fusca) have been found in plants of genus Bidens. P. xanthii has been reported to occur on B. cernua in Belarus and Switzerland. In addition, the powdery mildew species was reported to occur on B. frondosa and B. tripartita in Korea, Russia, and Switzerland (2). Abstract
This study investigated whether killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) genes and human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-C alleles, receptors and ligands of natural killer cells are associated with the development of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cervical disease in Korean women. Blood samples from 132 women with HPV-related cervical disease and 159 women without HPV infection were collected for genotyping of KIR genes and HLA-C alleles. Although no relationship was found between KIR genes and HPV-related cervical disease, a significant relationship was found between HLA-C alleles as ligands of KIR and HPV-related cervical disease. Women with HPV-related cervical disease were found to be significantly more likely to carry HLA-C*0303, particularly those with HPV 16 or 18 infection, and less likely to carry HLA-C*01 compared to women without HPV infection. HLA-C*0303 was found to confer susceptibility to HPV-related cervical disease, whereas HLA-C*01 was found to confer a protective effect against HPV-related cervical disease.

Abstract
The effect of acid-treated carbon nanotube (CNT) addition on the wear and dynamic mechanical thermal properties of basalt/epoxy woven composites was investigated in this study. Basalt/CNT/epoxy composites were fabricated by impregnating woven basalt fibers into epoxy resin mixed with 1 wt% CNTs which were acid-treated. Wear and DMA (dynamic mechanical analyzer) tests were performed on basalt/epoxy composites and basalt/CNT/epoxy composites. The results showed that the addition of the acid-treated CNTs improved the wear properties of basalt/epoxy woven composites. Specifically, the friction coefficient of the basalt/epoxy composite was stabilized in the range of 0.5-0.6 while it fell in the range of 0.3-0.4 for basalt/CNT/epoxy composites. The wear volume loss of the basalt/CNT/epoxy composites was approximately 68% lower than that of the basalt/epoxy composites. The results also showed that the glass transition temperature of basalt/CNT/epoxy composites was higher than that of basalt/epoxy composites. The improvement of wear properties of basalt/epoxy composites by the addition of acid-treated CNTs was caused by the homogeneous load transfer between basalt fibers and epoxy matrix due to the reinforcement of CNTs.

Abstract
C4d deposition is considered to be evidence of antibody-mediated rejection. This study was conducted to compare C4d immunoreactivity between villitis of unknown etiology (VUE) and cytomegaloviral placentitis. C4d immunohistochemistry was performed in cases with VUE (n = 16) and cytomegaloviral placentitis (n = 5). Distinct, linear C4d immunoreactivity along the syncytiotrophoblast was found in all VUE cases. In cytomegaloviral placentitis, the intensity of C4d immunoreactivity along the syncytiotrophoblast was not prominent, but cytoplasmic C4d immunoreactivity of villous cytotrophoblasts was frequently observed. Further screening of the cases with placental infarcts (n = 5) demonstrated prominent C4d immunoreactivity in the chorionic villi adjacent to the infarct. We report the characteristic co-localization of VUE and C4d immunoreactivity. The overall findings in this study strongly suggest that the complement activation is a common mechanism of diverse placental injuries associated with rejection, infection, and ischemia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We found isolated or clustered trophoblasts in the chorionic connective tissue of the extraplacental membranes, and defined this novel histologic feature as the "trophoblast islands of the chorionic connective tissue" (TICCT). This study was conducted to determine the clinical significance of TICCT. METHODS Immunohistochemistry for cytokeratin-7 was performed on the chorioamniotic membranes (N = 2155) obtained from singleton pregnancies of 1199 uncomplicated term and 956 preterm deliveries. The study groups comprised 1236 African-American and 919 Hispanic women. Gestational age ranged from 24(+0) weeks to 41(+6) weeks. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the magnitude of association between patient characteristics and the presence of TICCT. RESULTS The likelihood of TICCT was significantly associated with advancing gestational age both in term (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.16-1.45, p < 0.001) and preterm deliveries (OR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.07-1.32, p = 0.001) . Hispanic women were less likely than African-American women to have TICCT across gestation in term (OR: 0.23, 95% CI: 0.18-0.31, p < 0.001) and preterm pregnancies (OR: 0.41, 95% CI: 0.29-0.58, p < 0.001). Women with a female fetus were significantly more likely to have TICCT than women with a male fetus, in both term (OR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.28-2.11, p < 0.001) and preterm gestations (OR: 2.04, 95% CI: 1.46-2.85, p < 0.001). TICCT was 40% less frequent in the presence of chronic placental inflammation [term (OR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.45-0.81, p = 0.001) and preterm gestations (OR: 0.58, 95% CI: 0.40-0.84, p = 0.003)] and in parous women at term (OR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.44-0.81, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that the duration of pregnancy, fetal sex, and parity may influence the behavior of extravillous trophoblast and placental mesenchymal cells.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to evaluate effects of rigor state, thawing temperature, and processing on the physicochemical properties of intact frozen duck breast muscle and homogenates prepared with the frozen-thawed muscles. Prerigor breast muscle was frozen at -25°C and thawed at 4 and 15°C, and the physicochemical properties of duck breast frozen prerigor compared with those in frozen postrigor and 4°C chilled postrigor muscles. The homogenates prepared with duck breast frozen prerigor showed similar physicochemical properties as the frozen-thawed postrigor muscle homogenate. The thawing temperature did not affect the physicochemical properties of homogenates prepared with duck breast muscle frozen prerigor. Also, no significant differences (P > 0.05) in the ultimate pH value and color parameters were observed among the frozen-thawed treatments despite the differences in rigor state and thawing temperature. However, a higher thawing temperature of the intact frozen prerigor muscle resulted in an increase in thawing loss and shear force due to excessive muscle shortening. In this study, the intact duck breast that has undergone thaw-rigor showed main problems associated with thaw-rigor, such as higher thawing loss and shear force, regardless of thawing temperature. However, the processing (grinding and salting) decreased the difference in physicochemical properties due to rigor state before freezing and thawing temperature. Therefore, the frozen-thawed duck breast muscle used to manufacture ground-type meat product may be frozen before rigor onset.

Abstract
Interleukin-22 (IL-22) is a cytokine with epithelial reparative and regenerative properties that is produced by Th22 cells and by other immune cell subsets. Therefore, we explored the hypothesis that disruption of the gut barrier during HIV infection involves dysregulation of these cells in the gastrointestinal mucosa. Sigmoid IL-22-producing T cell and Th22 cells were dramatically depleted during chronic HIV infection, epithelial integrity was compromised, and microbial translocation was increased. These alterations were reversed after long-term antiretroviral therapy. While all mucosal IL-22-producing T-cell subsets were also depleted very early during HIV infection, at these early stages IL-22 production by non-T-cell populations (including NKp44+ cells) was increased and gut epithelial integrity was maintained. Circulating Th22 cells expressed a higher level of the HIV co-receptor/binding molecules CCR5 and α4β7 than CD4+ T-cell subsets in HIV-uninfected participants, but this was not the case after HIV infection. Finally, recombinant IL-22 was protective against HIV and tumor necrosis factor-α-induced gut epithelial damage in a validated in vitro gut epithelial system. We conclude that reduced IL-22 production and Th22 depletion in the gut mucosa are important factors in HIV mucosal immunopathogenesis.

Abstract
The effects of quality grade (which reflects relative marbling) on the chemical, physical and sensory properties was investigated using Korean native cattle (Hanwoo) beef. Thirty-six Hanwoo cows were slaughtered and the carcasses were graded at 24h postmortem according to the Korean carcass grading system. The quality grade 1 (high quality), grade 2 and grade 3 (low quality) were based on the marbling score of longissimus dorsi (LD) muscles. The effects of quality grade on the meat quality parameters of beef LD muscle were assessed during aging. Loin-eye area, fat thickness and yield grade were all similar for the three quality groups. Mean lean color, fat color and maturity scores did not differ among quality grade groups (P>0.05). pH, Sarcomere length, WHC, collagen content, cooking loss, shear force and MFI were not affected by quality grade groups. Drip loss for grade 1 group was significantly lower than that for grade 3 groups (P<0.05). At initial tenderness evaluation of steaks, no differences among the three grades were observed; however, with additional days of storage, grade 1 steaks had higher tenderness score than grade 3 steaks (P<0.05). Increased postmortem aging time improved tenderness attributes regardless of quality groups. No significant differences were found among the quality grade groups for flavor (P>0.05). The grade 1 group had the highest juiciness score, and grade 3 groups had the lowest score (P<0.05), but postmortem aging did not influence flavor and juiciness. The quality grades were more strongly related to juiciness than tenderness or flavor.

Quantitative hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) assays are emerging as effective tools of on-treatment predictors of response to antiviral agents, in addition to monitoring serum HBV DNA levels. However, the dynamic relationship between quantitative HBsAg, as well as HBeAg and HBV DNA, and the predictability of subsequent clinical outcomes during entecavir (ETV) therapy remain unclear. Eighty-two patients with HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B (CHB) received ETV therapy for ≥3 years. Virologic response (VR) after 3 years of ETV therapy was achieved in 73 (89.0%) patients. Among baseline and on-treatment factors, on-treatment HBV DNA levels performed better with respect to the prediction of response than HBsAg and HBeAg levels. Especially, the performance of absolute values of HBV DNA with respect to response was superior to HBV DNA decline from the baseline. The best predictive value was an absolute HBV DNA level of 2.3 log(10) IU/mL at month 6 (areas under the curve [AUROC], 0.977; 95% CI, 0.940-1.000; P < 0.001). HBeAg seroconversion after 3 years of therapy was achieved in 26 (31.7%) patients. On-treatment HBeAg levels performed better with respect to the prediction of seroconversion than HBsAg and HBV DNA levels. The best cut-off value for the HBeAg level at month 12 for the prediction of seroconversion was 0.62 log(10) PEIU/mL. Although the HBsAg level at baseline is often used to predict the antiviral potency of entecavir, on-treatment HBV DNA and HBeAg levels are more helpful for prediction of subsequent clinical outcomes in HBeAg-positive CHB patients with entecavir treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Bidirectional trafficking of cells between the mother and the fetus is routine in pregnancy and a component of maternal-fetal tolerance. Changes in fetal-to-maternal cellular trafficking have been reported in prenatal complications, but maternal-to-fetal trafficking has never been studied in the context of fetal intervention. We hypothesized that patients undergoing open fetal surgery would have altered maternal-fetal cellular trafficking. METHODS Cellular trafficking was analyzed in patients with myelomeningocele (MMC) who underwent open fetal surgical repair (n = 5), patients with MMC who had routine postnatal repair (n = 6), and healthy control healthy patients (n = 9). As an additional control for the fetal operation, trafficking was also analyzed in patients who were delivered by an ex utero intrapartum treatment procedure (n = 6). Microchimerism in maternal and cord blood was determined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction for nonshared alleles. RESULTS Maternal-to-fetal trafficking was significantly increased in patients who underwent open fetal surgery for MMC compared with healthy controls, patients who underwent postnatal MMC repair, and patients who underwent ex utero intrapartum treatment. There were no differences in fetal-to-maternal cell trafficking among groups. CONCLUSION Patients undergoing open fetal surgery for MMC have elevated levels of maternal microchimerism. These results suggest altered trafficking and/or increased proliferation of maternal cells in fetal blood and may have important implications for preterm labor.

Abstract
Gypsophilas commonly cultivated are Gypsophila elegans B. and G. paniculata L. In September of 2009 and 2010, a severe wilt symptom due to crown rot was observed on G. paniculata (cv. Bristol Fairy) in greenhouses in Yeosu, South Korea. The area of cultivation (~8 ha) in Yeosu covers 90% of production in the Jeonnam Province. Disease outbreak was 20 to 30% in affected greenhouses. Early symptoms included brown discoloration surrounding basal stems and slight wilting. Late symptoms included a sunken stem rot next to the roots, root rot, severe wilting, and dying plants. The causal fungus appeared to invade plants through the basal stem, causing a crown rot that prevented the plant from taking up water and nutrients. Crown rot occurred on young and mature plants. Ten fungal isolates were recovered from basal stems and roots of wilted plants. Microconidia were abundantly produced on potato dextrose agar (PDA), V8 juice agar (VA), carnation leaf agar (CLA), and oatmeal agar (OA). Microconidia were single celled, variable, oval-ellipsoid cylindrical, straight to curved, club-to-kidney shaped or spindle shaped on OA, more slender on VA. Macroconidia were not found on any media used. Microconidia on PDA were 5.9 to 15.1 (9.9) × 2.7 to 4.3 (3.5) μm. Germinated conidia (or false conidia) were often formed on CLA. Conidiophores as phialides were singly formed but often branched. Length of conidiophores was up to 31.1 μm on CLA. Small-sized chlamydospores were rarely found. Fusarium isolates (EML-GYP1, 2, and 3) were selected and identified. From extracted genomic DNA, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region including 5.8S rDNA was amplified using ITS1F (5'-CTTGGTCATTTAGAGGAAGT-3') and LR5F (5'-GCTATCCTGAGGGAAAC-3') primers. Sequence analyses by BLAST indicated that the isolates (GenBank HM560019, HM560020, and HM560021) were most similar to F. proliferatum (EF4534150) with sequence identity values of 99.3, 99.4, and 99.1%, respectively. The causal fungus was determined to be F. proliferatum based on morphological data and ITS rDNA sequences. Pathogenicity tests with the three isolates were performed on 10 plants of G. paniculata using the dipping method. Healthy roots and basal stems were soaked in a conidial suspension adjusted to ~1.2 × 106 conidia/ml (distilled water) for 15 min. Plants were potted in sterile soil, kept in a humid chamber for 72 h, and moved to a greenhouse. The experiment was carried out in duplicate and repeated two times. Similar symptoms to those observed in the greenhouses were seen 7 days after inoculation. The causal fungus was reisolated from the artificially inoculated basal stems, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Control plants whose basal stems and roots were dipped in sterile water showed no crown rot and wilt symptoms. EML-GYP2 was determined to be the most pathogenic. Ten records of disease caused by three Fusarium species (Fusarium sp., F. oxysporum, and F. udum) have been found on gypsophilas (1), but only F. oxysporum has been reported to cause wilt on G. elgans in Korea (2). Abstract
Ubame oak (Quercus phillyraeoides A. Gray) is native to eastern Asia, including China, Korea, and Japan. In 2009 and 2010, a powdery mildew on Q. phillyraeoides growing in clusters and singly was observed in three locations on the campus of Chonnam National University, Gwangju, Korea. White superficial conidia of the powdery mildew fungus occurred on adaxial and abaxial surfaces. However, the white powdery growth was more abundant on the adaxial surface. Leaf symptoms commonly appeared white from May to October. Along with the typical white powdery mildew, spot and/or necrotic symptoms with irregular violet-to-wine red surfaces were also frequently observed on overwintered leaves. A voucher specimen has been deposited in EML (Environmental Microbiology Laboratory) herbarium collection, Chonnam National University (EML-QUP1). Conidia were commonly formed singly but also occurred in chains. Primary conidia were obovoid to ellipsoid, with a rounded apex and subtruncate base. Secondary conidia were generally obovoid to ellipsoid or sometimes cylindrical but dolioform when mature. The size was 30.1 to 43.2 (average 37.7) × 14.1 to 21.1 (average 18.1) μm with length/width ratio of 1.8 to 2.4 (average 2.1). Conidiophores were erect and up to 102.2 μm long. No chasmothecia were found. From extracted genomic DNA, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region inclusive of 5.8S rDNA was amplified with ITS1F (5'-CTTGGT CATTTAGAGGAAGT-3') and LR5F (5'-GCTATCCTGAGGGAAAC-3') primers (4). Sequence analysis by BLASTN search indicated that EML-QUP1 (GenBank Accession No. HQ328834) was closest to E. quercicola (GenBank Accession No. AB292691) with >99% identity (478 of 480), forming a monophyletic quercicola clade in the resulting phylogenetic analysis. The causal fungus was determined to be Erysiphe quercicola on the basis of morphology and sequence data analysis. Major genera including Cystotheca, Erysiphe, Microsphaera, and Phyllactinia have been reported to cause powdery mildews on Quercus plants. Until now, 22 Erysiphe species including E. abbreviata, E. alphitoides, E. calocladophora, E. gracilis, E. polygoni, and E. quercicola have been reported to cause powdery mildews on Quercus spp. (1). Of these, four Erysiphe species including E. alphitoides, E. gracilis, E. quercicola, and an unidentified Erysiphe sp. have been found on Q. phillyraeoides from Japan (1-3). E. quercicola was reported to occur on five Quercus species: Q. crispula, Q. phillyraeoides, and Q. serrata in Japan, Q. robur in Australia, and Quercus sp. in Australia, Iran, and Thailand (1). Abstract
This study investigated the effects of high-dose vitamin C on oxygen free radical production and cardiac enzymes after tourniquet application and ischaemia-reperfusion injury during bilateral total knee replacement (TKR) in elderly patients. In the vitamin C (VC) group (VC group, n = 16), during surgery, patients received a priming bolus of 0.06 g/kg vitamin C with 100 ml saline followed by 0.02 g/kg vitamin C mixed with 30 ml saline, intravenously. The control group (n = 16) received no intra-operative vitamin C. In the VC group, malondialdehyde levels were lower, and arterial oxygen tension and mean blood pressure were higher, than in controls after post-operative deflation of both knee tourniquets. Troponin I levels were lower in the VC group than in controls 8 h post-operation. Administering high-dose vitamin C during bilateral TKR could prevent oxygen free radical production and a decline in arterial oxygen tension and mean blood pressure induced by ischaemia-reperfusion injury, thereby protecting the myocardium.

Abstract
We investigate a reversible percolation system showing unipolar resistance switching in which percolating paths are created and broken alternately by the application of an electric bias. Owing to the dynamical changes in the percolating paths, different from those in classical percolating paths, a detailed understanding of the structure is demanding and challenging. Here, we develop a scaling theory that can explain the transport properties of these conducting paths; the theory is based on the fractal geometry of a percolating cluster. This theory predicts that two scaling behaviors emerge, depending on the topologies of the conducting paths. We confirm these theoretical predictions experimentally by observing material-independent universal scaling behaviors in unipolar resistance switching.

Abstract
In a previous study a linkage region for association to IA patients was found on chromosome 14q22. In this study, we report the findings of a positional candidate gene, Jun dimerization Protein 2 (JDP2), and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of that gene that are associated with intracranial aneurysms in different ethnic populations. We screened the linkage region around chromosome 14q22 and narrowed it down to JDP2. We then genotyped case and control groups of three different ethnic populations: 403 Japanese intracranial aneurysm (IA) cases and 412 controls, 181 Korean IA cases and 181 controls, 379 Dutch cases and 642 Dutch controls. Genotyping was performed using polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing technology. The allele distribution of three SNPs (two intronic: rs741846; P=0.0041 and rs175646; P=0.0014, and one in the untranslated region: rs8215; P=0.019) and their genotype distribution showed significant association in the Japanese IA patients. The allelic and genotypic frequency of one intronic SNP (rs175646; P=0.0135 and P=0.0137, respectively) and the genotypic frequency for the SNP in the UTR region (rs8215; P=0.049) was also significantly different between cases and controls of the Korean cohort. There was no difference in allelic or genotypic frequencies in the Dutch population. These SNPs in JDP2 are associated with intracranial aneurysms, suggesting that variation in or near JDP2 play a role in susceptibility to IAs in East Asian populations.

Abstract
In this paper, to improve the poor wettability between the Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and metal matrix, the mechanical alloying (MA) technique by the ball milling method was employed. Also, the CNTs were pre-coated to improve the agglomeration of the CNTs with copper powder. The main aim of this work is the fabrication of Cu-CNT nanocomposite powder using the MA by ball milling. The as-received dendritic copper powders change their shape sequentially to flaky, disk-typed particles and finally, to globular type particles. Also, the tendency of globular formation was prominent in the milled Cu-Cu coated MWNTs (multi-walled carbon nanotubes) powder and the grain size of the sintered Cu coated MWNTs specimen decreased more than that of the pure copper specimen. Finally, the homogeneous Cu-CNT nanocomposite intermetallic particles having fine grains was produced by the MA method of ball milling.

Abstract
Trident maple (Acer buergerianum Miq.) is widely grown in Korea as an ornamental tree as well as for the art of bonsai. During 2008 and 2009, a powdery mildew was observed on trident maple plants at the campus of Chonnam National University, Gwangju, Korea. Further surveys revealed the disease to be widespread on this species in other areas including Jeonbuk and Chungnam provinces in Korea. White, superficial mycelia were observed on young shoots and leaves early in spring. Both macroconidia and microconidia were produced beginning in May and conidial production continued through the summer into September and October. Production of chasmothecia was observed starting in September and continued into October. Macroconidia were produced in chains that were sinuate in outline. Individual macroconidia were barrel shaped and 23.4 to 30.0 (26.6) × 15.6 to 21.1 (18.1) μm. Foot cells of macroconidial conidiophores were 26.7 to 110.7 (48) × 7.1 to 11.2 (8.8) μm with one to five following cells. Microconidia were broadly ellipsoidal to subglobose and 8.9 to 12.5 (10.5) × 4.3 to 5.8 (5.1) μm. Chasmothecia typically were formed on adaxial leaf surfaces and 193.2 to 238.1 (216.8) μm in diameter. Appendages bore uncinate to circinate apices and were 176.8 to 267.7 (211.5) × 4.3 to 8.0 (6.2) μm. From extracted genomic DNA, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region inclusive of 5.8S rDNA was amplified with ITS1F (5'-CTTGGTCATTTAGAGGAAGT-3') and LR5F (5'-GCTATCCTGAGGGAAAC-3') primers. The causal fungus was determined to be Sawadaea nankinensis (F.L. Tai) S. Takam. & U. Braun (2) on the basis of morphological data and ITS rDNA sequences. A BLAST search of GenBank with an ITS sequence from this fungus determined that the five sequences exhibiting the highest max score values (1,811 to 2,004) were from S. nankinensis; these sequences produced max ident values from 94% to 99%. In contrast, max score and max ident values from sequences of other Sawadaea spp. were lower, including scores of 1,063 and 98% similarity for S. polyfida var. japonica, 915 and 97% for S. tulasnei, and 913 and 97% for S. bicornis. Pathogenicity tests were conducted on field-grown plants in two replicates. These plants were inoculated with a paintbrush to apply conidia (~5 × 106/ml) collected from powdery-mildew-infected leaves. Inoculated plants developed powdery mildew symptoms within 5 days of inoculation and resembled those observed on naturally infected plants. S. nankinensis (synonym Uncinula nankinensis) was first reported on A. buergerianum from China in 1930 (2). Recently, S. nankinensis (F.L. Tai) S. Takam & U. Braun was reported to occur on A. buergerianum in Japan (3). Until now, three Sawadaea spp. (S. bicornis (Wallr.) Homma, S. negundinis Homma, and S. tulasnei (Fuckel) Homma) have been reported to cause powdery mildew on A. ginnala, but only S. bicornis (= U. circinata Cooke & Peck) has been reported to cause powdery mildew on A. ginnala in Korea (1). However, no Sawadaea sp. previously was reported to cause powdery mildew on A. buergerianum. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Osteoporosis is a disease that increases the fracture rates and it is the major cause of increased mortality and morbidity in the elderly people. To determine which component of body composition is most important to bone health, we analysed the relationship between elements of the body composition and bone mineral density (BMD) in Korean women. DESIGN Cross-sectional clinical study. PATIENTS Totally 1694 women (mean age 51 years) were selected from subjects who participated in a medical check-up program. MEASUREMENTS Body composition analysis was performed by segmental bioelectric impedance method and lean mass, fat mass and per cent body fat measured. Waist: hip ratio (WHR) was assessed as a marker for visceral fat. Lumbar spine (L-spine) BMD was measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). As menopausal status could not be confirmed in all subjects, we divided the subjects into two groups according to the age > 50 years and < 50 years. RESULTS Among the entire population, 599 subjects (35.4%) were osteopaenic and 229 subjects (13.5%) were osteoporotic. The bivariate correlation among the variables showed that weight had the highest correlation with fat mass. Mean lean mass was decreased and the WHR increased as the subjects progressed from normal to osteoporotic status; fat mass was the highest among the osteopaenic subjects. L-spine BMD showed a positive correlation with lean mass, and a negative correlation with WHR by bivariate correlation analysis. However, fat mass had a negative correlation with L-spine BMD only after adjustment for age and weight. Multiple regression analysis with L-spine BMD as the dependent variable showed that age, height, fasting insulin, lean mass and WHR were significant determinants of the L-spine BMD (R(2) = 0.170, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION In this Korean female population, L-spine BMD showed a consistently positive correlation with lean mass and a negative correlation with WHR. Fat mass failed to show any consistent correlation with L-spine BMD in this study population.

Abstract
Perilla or kkaennip (Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton), an annual herb of the mint family, Lamiaceae, is used in salads and kimchi and for wrapping sliced raw fish. In September 2007, a disease occurred on greenhouse-produced perilla (cv. Manchu) in Gwangyang and Jeonnam provinces, Korea. Symptoms included leaf blight and irregularly shaped stem lesions approximately 1 to 3 cm long. Plants eventually died. In some greenhouses, 10 to 30%, and occasionally as much as 70%, of the plants were affected. Isolations on potato dextrose agar yielded a fungus with single conidiophores (439 to 656 [average 524] μm long × 6.2 to 11.6 [average 9.2] μm wide) with three to eight septa. Conidia were fusiform, obclavate to subcylindrical, straight or curved, and 30.4 to 180.1 (average 98.2) μm long × 6.7 to 18.1 (average 10.5) μm wide with 5 to 16 (commonly 13) distosepta. On the basis of morphological data and ITS rDNA sequences, the fungus was identified as Corynespora cassiicola (Berk. & Curt.) Wei. (1,2). Sequences of one isolate, EML-COR1, were more than 99% identical to sequences of C. cassiicola ATCC64204 (GenBank Accession No. AY238606) and C. cassiicola (GenBank Accession No. EF490450). In pathogenicity tests, the stems and leaves of two 2-month-old wounded and nonwounded potted plants (cv. Manchu) were sprayed until runoff with a conidial suspension of 5 × 104 conidia per ml. The plants were maintained for 48 h in a humid chamber and then moved to a greenhouse. Symptoms similar to those observed in the commercial greenhouse developed on wounded stems within 10 days. On nonwounded plants, symptoms developed 3 to 4 weeks after inoculation. C. cassiicola was reisolated from these lesions. Control plants (sprayed with distilled water) remained symptomless. The experiment was repeated with similar results. Although C. cassiicola causes blight of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), and other crops, to our knowledge, this is the first report of C. cassiicola on perilla. Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression during development. This study was performed to determine gestational age-dependent changes in miRNA expression in the chorioamniotic membranes and to assess the significance of miRNAs in human pregnancy and parturition. The expression profile of 455 miRNAs was compared between patients at term without labour (TNL: n = 10), in labour (TL: n = 10), and preterm labour (PTL: n = 10) using microarrays. A total of 39 miRNAs were differentially expressed between term and preterm cases, of which 31 (79.5%) were down-regulated at term. Expression of ten miRNAs, including miR-338, differentially expressed between PTL and TL groups was decreased at term. Computational analyses using miRBase Targets have identified PLA2G4B, a phospholipase implicated in parturition, as a putative target of miR-338. Inhibition of endogenous miR-338 with anti-miR-338 increased the mRNA and protein expression of PLA2G4B in decidual cells. Luciferase assay with reporter constructs confirmed that the suppression of PLA2G4B occurs through binding of miR-338 to the 3UTR of PLA2G4B. Interestingly, the expression of Dicer, a key miRNA-processing enzyme, was markedly decreased at term, particularly with labour in the chorioamniotic membranes. Collectively, the novel findings reported herein strongly suggest that post-transcriptional regulation of genes by miRNAs, coupled with the changes of miRNA processing machinery in the chorioamniotic membranes, plays a role in pregnancy and parturition. Furthermore, the expression level of Dicer in the chorioamniotic membranes dichotomizes pathological preterm labour and physiological spontaneous labour at term.

AIMS The nature of villitis of unknown aetiology (VUE) is intriguing in terms of its aetiology, origin of inflammatory cells and immunophenotype of T cells involved. The aim was to determine the origin of macrophages and the immunophenotype of T lymphocytes in VUE associated with various complications of pregnancy. METHODS AND RESULTS Placentas with VUE (n = 45) were studied by chromogenic in-situ hybridization (CISH) for Y chromosome (DYZ1) and immunohistochemistry for CD14, CD68, Ki67 (n = 10; all from male neonates) and a panel of T-cell antigens (CD3, CD4 and CD8) (n = 35). All of the placentas from male neonates showed CISH+ signals from Y chromosomes in the majority of macrophages, but not in lymphocytes, indicating that the macrophages were of fetal origin. Many macrophages of the affected chorionic villi were Ki67+, suggesting that they are hyperplastic Hofbauer cells. Among the lymphocytes, CD8+ T cells outnumbered CD4+ T cells in all placentas with different obstetrical conditions. CONCLUSIONS We define primary components of VUE as maternal CD8+ T cells and hyperplastic Hofbauer cells. We propose that VUE is a unique inflammatory reaction where the leucocytes from two hosts are key partners, analogous to either allograft rejection or graft-versus-host disease.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the effect of the addition of kimchi powder on the quality characteristics of meat batter and breakfast sausage. Breakfast sausages were supplemented with freeze dried kimchi powder (FKP) or hot air dried kimchi powder (HKP) at levels of 1% (FKP-1 and HKP-1) or 2% (FKP-2 and HKP-2). The emulsion stability, cooking yield, and apparent viscosity in meat batters improved with increments of kimchi powder (p<0.05). Increased levels of kimchi powder in breakfast sausage decreased the L(∗) value, pH, and springiness, and increased the a(∗) value, b(∗) value, hardness, chewiness, and gumminess (p<0.05). Sensory evaluations indicated that a higher overall acceptability was attained when the kimchi powder was added to breakfast sausage at a level of 2%.

Abstract
AIMS alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is frequently detected in hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) and AT motif binding factor 1 (ATBF1) down-regulates AFP gene expression in hepatic cells. The ATBF1 gene also inhibits cell growth and differentiation, and altered gene expression is associated with malignant transformation. The aim was to investigate the potential role of the ATBF1 gene in HCCs. METHODS AND RESULTS Somatic mutations, allelic loss and hypermethylation of the ATBF1 gene were analysed in 76 sporadic HCCs. The level of ATBF-1 mRNA expression was analysed using quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Genetic studies of the ATBF1 gene revealed absence of somatic mutation in the hotspot region and 15 (25%) of 60 informative cases showed allelic loss at the ATBF1 locus. Hypermethylation in the intron 1 region of the ATBF1 gene was detected in only one case. Interestingly, ATBF1 mRNA expression in HCCs was significantly reduced in 55 (72.4%) samples compared with the corresponding surrounding liver tissues. Reduced expression was not statistically associated with clinicopathological parameters including stage, histological grade, infective virus type, and serum alpha-fetoprotein level. CONCLUSIONS The ATBF1 gene may contribute to the development of HCCs via transcriptional down-regulation of mRNA expression, but not by genetic or epigenetic alterations.

Abstract
Mouse double minute 2 (Mdm2) acts as a negative regulator of p53 by binding to the amino-terminus of p53. The common T309G polymorphism of Mdm2 has been the most frequently investigated, which can influence in cancer susceptibility and disease outcome. The specific aim of this study is to investigate whether the T309G polymorphism of Mdm2 was associated with individual susceptibility to gastric cancer in Korea. The frequency of the polymorphism was examined in 239 gastric cancer patients and 299 healthy controls. Polymorphism analysis was performed by amplifying the first intron of the Mdm2 and digesting with restriction enzyme and sequencing the products. The frequencies of genotypes: T/T, T/G and G/G were 26.8% (64/239), 46.0% (110/239) and 27.2% (65/239), respectively, in gastric cancer cases and 20.4% (61/299), 50.8% (152/ 299) and 28.8% (86/299), respectively, in healthy controls. Statistically, there was no significant difference in the frequency of genotype and allele between healthy control and gastric cancer patients. Finally, the polymorphism was not associated with increased risk of gastric cancer in this population. When stratified by histological subtype of gastric cancer, the risk was also not statistically significant. Our findings suggested that the T309G polymorphism of Mdm2 was not associated with an increased risk for gastric cancer in Korean population.

Abstract
KLF6 is a key cell cycle regulator that is downregulated in several kinds of human cancers, including gastric cancer. The IVS1 -27G/A polymorphism of KLF6 has been investigated, which can influence susceptibility to gastric cancer and disease outcome. In order to investigate whether the IVS1 -27G/A polymorphism of KLF6 is associated with individual susceptibility to gastric cancer in Korea, the frequency of the polymorphism was examined in 264 gastric cancer patients and 299 healthy controls. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis was performed by amplifying intron 1 of KLF6 and sequencing the products. The frequencies of genotypes: G/G, G/A and A/A were 91.7% (242/264), 5.7% (15/264) and 2.6%, respectively, in gastric cancer cases and 91.9%, 7.0% and 1.1%, respectively, in healthy controls. Genotype frequencies in Korean population were very similar to those of Caucasian population. Interestingly, the male gastric cancer patients showed a significantly higher proportion of the G allele (Chi-Square test, P=0.005) compared to female gastric cancer patients. However, the polymorphism was statistically not associated with increased risk of gastric cancer in Korea. When stratified by histological subtype of gastric cancer, the risk was also not statistically significant. Thus, our results suggested that the IVS1 -27G/A polymorphism of KLF6 is not associated with an increased risk for gastric cancer in Korean population.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate whether postconization human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing can predict treatment failure and improve the accuracy of conventional follow-up in women with high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). Between March 2001 and October 2005, 120 patients with confirmed CIN 2 or 3 were treated with loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) and were enrolled. Six patients were lost to the follow-up. Postconization follow-up was performed at every 3–6 months during the first year and then annually. Specimens were tested for the presence of HPV, using the Hybrid Capture 2 (Digene Co, Gaithersburg, MD) and HPV DNA chip (Mygene Co, Seoul, Korea) test. Persistent HPV infection was defined as persistently (two times or more) positive HPV tests with the same HPV subtype(s) at initial diagnosis. Twenty-two (19.3%) patients showed treatment failure after conization. The only significant risk factor for redevelopment of CIN after conization was persistence of the same HPV subtype (P< 0.0001). And women with recurrent or residual CIN had higher HPV load during the 6-month follow-up postconization. In conclusion, the persistence of the same HPV subtype after LEEP conization was an important predictor of treatment failure. The follow-up protocol after conization of CIN should include both cervical cytology and HPV test, and HPV DNA chip test is needed to detect a persistent HPV infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Macrophages play a key role in implantation, placentation and parturition. Yet, whether or not the number of macrophages at the fetomaternal interface (basal plate of the placenta and placental bed) is altered in women with preeclampsia is the subject of controversy. The purpose of this study was to compare the immunoreactivity and distribution patterns of CD14 and CD68 positive macrophages in both the basal plate and placental bed from preeclamptic and non-preeclamptic pregnancies. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted. Paraffin embedded sections of placental tissues and placental bed biopsies were obtained from patients with early onset preeclampsia (n=10) and from those with preterm labor/delivery (n=10) without preeclampsia matched for gestational age. Double immunohistochemistry using antibodies to CD14 and CD68 was performed, and the density of double or single positive cells in the basal plate and placental bed was evaluated. Non-parametric statistics were used for analysis. RESULTS 1) A unique subset of CD14-/CD68+ cells was identified. The cells in question were present at a higher level in the decidua than in the myometrial segment of the placental bed (p<0.01); 2) The density and proportion of CD14+/CD68+ cells (double positive cells) were significantly higher in the myometrial segment than in the basal plate (p=0.0003); and 3) There were no significant differences in the density and patterns of immunopositive macrophages in the basal plate, the decidua, and the myometrium between women with preeclampsia and those with preterm labor/delivery (p>0.05). CONCLUSION The macrophages at the fetomaternal interface can be dichotomized by CD14 and CD68 immunoreactivity. A gradient of CD14+/CD68+ macrophages was demonstrated between the superficial myometrium and the basal plate regardless of the etiology of preterm birth (preeclampsia or spontaneous preterm labor). The biological function of single positive (CD14-/CD68+) and double positive (CD14+/CD68+) macrophages at the fetomaternal interface remains to be established. The overall findings also suggest that the discrepancies in the literature are due to the varying markers used to detect macrophages and in the anatomical plane of the fetomaternal junction analyzed.

Abstract
Surfactant protein-A (SP-A) is produced by the fetal lung, participates in innate immunity, and has been proposed to play a role in the initiation of parturition in mice. Amniotic fluid SP-A concentration increases as a function of gestational age, and SP-A protein has been demonstrated in human chorioamniotic membranes. This study was conducted to determine whether parturition at term, gestational age and chorioamnionitis in preterm delivery (PTD) are associated with changes in the expression of SP-A in the chorioamniotic membranes. Chorioamniotic membranes were obtained from women at term and women with PTD (n=58). SP-A mRNA and protein expression was detected in amniotic epithelial cells, chorionic trophoblasts and macrophages by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription-PCR demonstrated predominant expression of SP-A1 mRNA, whose expression was 17.4-fold higher in patients with PTD with chorioamnionitis (n=15) than in those without (n=13) (p=0.018). While no difference was observed in SP-A1 mRNA expression in the chorioamniotic membranes of women at term not in labour (n=16) and those in labour (n=14) (p=0.87), the expression in term membranes was higher than that of membranes from women with PTD without chorioamnionitis (p=0.003). Analysis of JAR choriocarcinoma cells demonstrated SP-A1 mRNA expression that was up-regulated following lipopolysaccharide treatment. Furthermore, monocytic cell lines (THP-1 and U937) and peripheral blood monocytes (CD14+/CD115+) obtained from pregnant women also expressed SP-A1 mRNA and protein, suggesting the presence of autocrine/paracrine activation in vivo. Interestingly, a mid-trimester amniotic fluid sample obtained from a case of tracheal atresia contained SP-A (3.13 microg/ml), indicating the presence of SP-A of extrapulmonary origin. These findings suggest not only that SP-A expression is a part of the innate immune response deployed during chorioamniotic inflammation, but also that chorioamniotic membranes are a source of SP-A in the amniotic fluid with advancing gestation.
