Abstract
Melon pest management relies on the excessive application of pesticides. Reducing pesticide spraying has become a global issue for environmental sustainability and human health. Therefore, developing a new cropping system that is sustainable and eco-friendly is important. This study found that melon seedlings irrigated with ultrafine water containing H2 and O2 (UFW) produced more root hairs, increased shoot height, and produced more flowers than the control irrigated with reverse osmosis (RO) water. Surprisingly, we also discovered that UFW irrigation significantly reduced aphid infestation in melons. Based on cryo-scanning electron microscope (cryo-SEM) observations, UFW treatment enhanced trichome development and prevented aphid infestation. To investigate whether it was H2 or O2 that helped to deter insect infestation, we prepared UF water enrichment of H2 (UF+H2) and O2 (UF+O2) separately and irrigated melons. Cryo-SEM results indicated that both UF+H2 and UF+O2 can increase the density of trichomes in melon leaves and petioles. RT-qPCR showed that UF+H2 significantly increased the gene expression level of the trichome-related gene GLABRA2 (GL2). We planted melons in a plastic greenhouse and irrigated them with ultrafine water enrichment of hydrogen (UF+H2) and oxygen (UF+O2). The SPAD value, photosynthetic parameters, root weight, fruit weight, and fruit sweetness were all better than the control without ultrafine water irrigation. UFW significantly increased trichome development, enhanced insect resistance, and improved fruit traits. This system thus provides useful water management for pest control and sustainable agricultural production.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is suggested before resection surgery in the control of rectal cancer. Unfortunately, treatment outcomes are widely variable and highly patient-specific. Notably, rectal cancer patients with distant metastasis generally have a much lower survival rate. Accordingly, a better understanding of the genetic background of patient cohorts can aid in predicting CCRT efficacy and clinical outcomes for rectal cancer before distant metastasis. METHODS A published transcriptome dataset (GSE35452) (n=46) was utilized to distinguish prospective genes concerning the response to CCRT. We recruited 172 rectal cancer patients, and the samples were collected during surgical resection after CCRT. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was performed to evaluate the expression level of regenerating family member 3 alpha (REG3A). Pearson's chi-squared test appraised the relevance of REG3A protein expression to clinicopathological parameters. The Kaplan-Meier method was utilized to generate survival curves, and the log-rank test was performed to compare the survival distributions between two given groups. RESULTS Employing a transcriptome dataset (GSE35452) and focusing on the inflammatory response (GO: 0006954), we recognized that REG3A is the most significantly upregulated gene among CCRT nonresponders (log2 ratio=1.2472, p=0.0079). Following IHC validation, high immunoexpression of REG3A was considerably linked to advanced post-CCRT tumor status (p<0.001), post-CCRT lymph node metastasis (p=0.042), vascular invasion (p=0.028), and low-grade tumor regression (p=0.009). In the multivariate analysis, high immunoexpression of REG3A was independently correlated with poor disease-specific survival (DSS) (p=0.004) and metastasis-free survival (MeFS) (p=0.045). The results of the bioinformatic analysis also supported the idea that REG3A overexpression is implicated in rectal carcinogenesis. CONCLUSION In the current study, we demonstrated that REG3A overexpression is correlated with poor CCRT effectiveness and inferior patient survival in rectal cancer. The predictive and prognostic utility of REG3A expression may direct patient stratification and decision-making more accurately for those patients.

Abstract
Mitochondrial dysfunction was reported to be involved in the development of lung diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, molecular regulation underlying metabolic disorders in the airway epithelia exposed to air pollution remains unclear. In the present study, lung bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B and alveolar epithelial A549 cells were treated with diesel exhaust particles (DEPs), the primary representative of ambient particle matter. This treatment elicited cell death accompanied by induction of lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and ferroptosis. Lipidomics analyses revealed that DEPs increased glycerophospholipid contents. Accordingly, DEPs upregulated expression of the electron transport chain (ETC) complex and induced mitochondrial ROS production. Mechanistically, DEP exposure downregulated the Hippo transducer transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ), which was further identified to be crucial for the ferroptosis-associated antioxidant system, including glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), the glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC), and glutathione-disulfide reductase (GSR). Moreover, immunohistochemistry confirmed downregulation of GPX4 and upregulation of lipid peroxidation in the bronchial epithelium of COPD patients and Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to air pollution. Finally, proteomics analyses confirmed alterations of ETC-related proteins in bronchoalveolar lavage from COPD patients compared to healthy subjects. Together, our study discovered that involvement of mitochondrial redox dysregulation plays a vital role in pulmonary epithelial cell destruction after exposure to air pollution.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) I-125 radioactive seeds embedded in an eye plaque is used to deliver the radiation dose of 85Gy to the apex of the tumor. However, it is challenging to treat a lesion in height (>10 mm) because of a high dose (> 500 Gy) to sclera. A staged radiotherapy (SRT) has been implemented successfully in stereotactic radiosurgery when a single dose is risky for a bigger sized lesion. The hypothesis of this work is that the SRT works for eye plaque brachytherapy of uveal melanoma to break the single fraction into two. To apply the concept of SRT, the following questions need to be answered: What are the two fraction doses? What is the time interval between the two fractions? In this work, the two split fraction doses and time interval are calculated using the "incomplete-repair' model. MATERIALS/METHODS Equation (1) is the linear-quadratic (LQ) model. f(x) is the cell survival curve (SC). Equation (2) and (3) are radiobiological model developed dealing with the split doses by considering the incomplete repair. Ln(f(x)) = -αx - βx2 (1) Ln(fn(x, Ɵ)) = nLn(f(x))-nβx2hn(Ɵ) (2) hn(Ɵ) = (2/n)[ Ɵ/(1- Ɵ)][n-(1- Ɵn)/(1- Ɵ)] (3) Ɵ = exp(-µΔt) (4) x represents the fraction dose, Ɵx is the initial segment of the survival curve, Ɵ determines the rate at which repair proceeds. n is fraction number and µ represent repair constant which equals to ln2/T1/2. T1/2 is the half-life of I-125. For continuous dose vt delivered at dose rate v for time t, with repair constant µ, the LQ model is modified as Ln (f(vt, µ)) = -α(vt) -β(vt)2g(µt) (5) g(µt) = 2[µt-1+exp(-µt)]/(µt)2 (6) Assuming biological effective dose (BED) is the same for the single fraction and split two fractions, SC when n = 1 should be same as when n = 2. Therefore, the equation (7) is derived. Ɵ = [(α/β)x1 - 2(α/β)(x2)2 + (x1)2]/2(x2)2 - 1 (7) x1 is single fraction dose of 85Gy, x2 is the split dose to two fractions. α/β ratio of 10 Gy is used. By fitting the equation (7), the ranges of doses and time intervals were determined. RESULTS The fraction doses and time interval to get the same BED as single fraction of 85 Gy are determined from 45 Gy to 50 Gy with time interval of 22 days to 76 days for staged brachytherapy eye plaque (SBEP). Our result is matched the treatment protocol for SBEP reported, e.g., 1st fraction dose of 40Gy and 50 Gy of 2nd fraction with 73 days of time interval are used. The max. dose of scleral dose is 328 Gy compared to the single fraction scleral dose of 543Gy. CONCLUSION This work could provide guidelines in SBEP in dosage and time interval. The height of tumor matters the most in the SBEP since the taller the tumor, the higher dose to the sclera is. Reference.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) The purpose of this study is to compare the dosimetric quality and dose to surrounding normal tissue of HyperArc-based stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) technique with a frameless robotic radiosurgery system for patients with multiple brain metastases. MATERIALS/METHODS Nineteen patients with multiple brain metastases (2-5 lesions) treated in our center were enrolled. The prescribed dose was 2100 cGy to 3250 cGy in three to five fractions. In order to determine the dosimetric quality, we compared the conformity index (CI), Gradient radius (GR), homogeneity index (HI), dose distribution in planning target volume, and dose to several organs at risk (OARs). All of the data were compared using pair-T test. RESULTS Both planning systems have prescribed dose coverage to GTV and PTV with no significant difference (P = 0.243; P = 0.312). The conformity index (CI), and homogeneity index (HI) were 1.27 ±0.022, and 1.08 ±0.006, respectively, for HyperArc plan and 1.76 ±0.065 and 1.22 ±0.009, respectively, for the CK plan (both, P< 0.001). The Gradient radius (GR) was 0.732 ±0.056 cm for HyperArc plan and 0.847 ±0.762 cm for CK plan (P = 0.002). These indicated that HyperArc plan had better CI, HI, and GR when compared to CK plan. Maximum dose to brainstem for HyperArc and CK plans were 485.1 ±128.65 and 723.6 ±126.93 cGy, respectively (P < 0.001). Moreover, HyperArc plan had less mean dose to optic chiasm, bilateral eyes, bilateral lens, and bilateral optic nerves (all, P < 0.05). Brain V5, V12, V24 were all much smaller in HyperArc plan (all, P < 0.05), indicating that HyperArc plan delivered less dose to normal brain tissue. CONCLUSION For patients with two to five brain metastases, HyperArc-based SRT provide excellent dosimetric quality and less dose to normal tissue.

Abstract
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of the nasopharynx. Despite improvements in the clinical treatment strategies for NPC, NPC patients usually have poor survival rates because of late diagnosis, tumor metastasis, and recurrence. Therefore, the identification of potential diagnostic and prognostic markers for NPC is imperative. We investigated the differential expression of cell adhesion-related genes (gene ontology:0003779) and tumorigenesis-related genes (GSE12452) in patients with NPC. The correlations between synaptopodin-2 (SYNPO2) immune expression and clinicopathological features were analyzed using Pearson chi-square test. Multivariate analysis was performed using Cox proportional hazards model. SYNPO2 expression was significantly higher in NPC tumor tissues than in nontumor tissues. High SYNPO2 expression was significantly associated with the advanced disease stage (P = .006). Univariate analysis showed that high expression of SYNPO2 was associated with poor disease-specific survival, distal metastasis-free survival, and local recurrence-free survival in patients with NPC. Notably, our multivariate analysis demonstrated that high SYNPO2 expression was substantially correlated with inferior disease-specific survival (hazard ratio = 1.968, P = .012) and local recurrence-free survival (hazard ratio = 3.386, P = .001). Overall, our findings reveal that SYNPO2 may aid in the development of potential prognostic biomarkers for NPC patients.

Abstract
To improve color conversion performance for color display application, we study the near-field-induced nanoscale-cavity effects on the emission efficiency and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) under the condition of surface plasmon (SP) coupling by inserting colloidal quantum dots (QDs) and synthesized Ag nanoparticles (NPs) into surface nano-holes fabricated on a GaN template and an InGaN/GaN quantum-well (QW) template. In the QW template, the inserted Ag NPs are close to either QWs or QDs for producing three-body SP coupling to enhance color conversion. Time-resolved and continuous-wave photoluminescence (PL) behaviors of the QW- and QD-emitting lights are investigated. The comparison between the nano-hole samples and the reference samples of surface QD/Ag NP shows that the nanoscale-cavity effect of the nano-hole leads to the enhancements of QD emission, FRET between QDs, and FRET from QW into QD. The SP coupling induced by the inserted Ag NPs can enhance the QD emission and FRET from QW into QD. Its result is further enhanced through the nanoscale-cavity effect. The relative continuous-wave PL intensities among different color components also show the similar behaviors. By introducing SP coupling to a color conversion device with the FRET process in a nanoscale cavity structure, we can significantly improve the color conversion efficiency. Simulation results confirm the basic observations in experiment.

Abstract
Obesity is a well-known risk factor for breast cancer formation and is associated with elevated mortality and a poor prognosis. An obesity-mediated inflammatory microenvironment is conducive to the malignant progression of tumors. However, the detailed molecular mechanism is still needed to be clarified. Herein, we identified that breast cancer cells from mice with diet-induced obesity exhibited increased growth, invasiveness, and stemness capacities. A transcriptome analysis revealed that expressions of interleukin 33 (IL33) signaling pathway-related genes were elevated in obesity-associated breast cancer cells. Importantly, IL33 expression was significantly associated with the yes-associated protein (YAP) signature, and IL33 was transcriptionally regulated by YAP. Suppression of IL33 reduced tumor migration and invasion, while the addition of IL33 activated nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling and revived tumor mobility in YAP-silenced cells. Furthermore, suppression of YAP attenuated IL33 expression which was accompanied by relief of obesity-mediated immunosuppression. Clinical analyses showed that IL33 expression was markedly associated with macrophage and regulatory T cell infiltration. These findings reveal a crucial role of the YAP/IL33 axis in promoting aggressiveness and immunosuppression of obesity-associated breast cancer progression.

Abstract
To improve the color conversion performance, we study the nanoscale-cavity effects on the emission efficiency of a colloidal quantum dot (QD) and the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from quantum well (QW) into QD in a GaN porous structure (PS). For this study, we insert green-emitting QD (GQD) and red-emitting QD (RQD) into the fabricated PSs in a GaN template and a blue-emitting QW template, and investigate the behaviors of the photoluminescence (PL) decay times and the intensity ratios of blue, green, and red lights. In the PS samples fabricated on the GaN template, we observe the efficiency enhancements of QD emission and the FRET from GQD into RQD, when compared with the samples of surface QDs, which is attributed to the nanoscale-cavity effect. In the PS samples fabricated on the QW template, the FRET from QW into QD is also enhanced. The enhanced FRET and QD emission efficiencies in a PS result in an improved color conversion performance. Because of the anisotropic PS in the sample surface plane, the polarization dependencies of QD emission and FRET are observed.

Abstract
Background For rectal cancer, it remains unclear how to incorporate tumor response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) when deciding whether to give adjuvant chemotherapy. In this study, we aim to determinate the survival benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy for rectal cancer patients with good response (ypT0-2N0) after nCRT and surgery. Methods The study cohort included 720 rectal cancer patients who had good response (ypT0-2N0) after nCRT and surgery, who did or did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy between January 2007 and December 2017, from the Taiwan Cancer Registry and National Health Insurance Research database. The Kaplan-Meier method, log-rank tests, and Cox regression analysis were performed to investigate the effect of adjuvant chemotherapy on 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results Of 720 patients, 368 (51.1%) received adjuvant chemotherapy and 352 (48.9%) did not. Patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy were more likely to be female, younger (≤ 65), with advanced clinical T (3-4)/N (1-2) classification and ypT2 classification. No significant difference in 5-year OS (p=0.681) or DFS (p=0.942) were observed by receipt of adjuvant chemotherapy or not. Multivariable analysis revealed adjuvant chemotherapy was not associated with better OS (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.03; 95% Confidence Interval [CI], 0.88-1.21) or DFS (aHR, 1.05; 95% CI, 0.89-1.24). Stratified analysis for OS and DFS found no significant protective effect in the use of adjuvant chemotherapy, even for those with advanced clinical T or N classification. Conclusion Adjuvant chemotherapy may be omitted in rectal cancer patients with good response (ypT0-2N0) after nCRT and surgery.

Abstract
Purpose For locally advanced rectal cancer, neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) allows tumor downstaging and makes curative radical proctectomy possible. However, we lack a genetic biomarker to predict cancer prognosis or treatment response. We investigated the association between ubiquitin D (UBD) expression and clinical outcomes in rectal cancer patients receiving CCRT. Patients and Methods We analyzed the genes associated with the protein modification process (GO:0036211) and identified the UBD gene as the most relevant among the top 7 differentially expressed genes associated with CCRT resistance. We collected tissue specimens from 172 rectal cancer patients who had received CCRT followed by a curative proctectomy. We examine the relationship between UBD expression and patient characteristics, pathological findings, and patient survival, such as metastasis-free survival (MeFS) and disease-specific survival. Results Upregulated UBD expression was associated with lower pre-CCRT tumor T stage (P = 0.009), lower post-CCRT tumor T stage (P < 0.001), lower post-CCRT nodal stage (P < 0.001), less vascular invasion (P = 0.015), and better tumor regression (P < 0.001). Using univariate analysis, we found that high UBD expression was correlated with better disease-free survival (DFS) (P < 0.0001), local recurrence-free survival (LRFS) (P < 0.0001) and MeFS (P < 0.0001). Moreover, multivariate analysis demonstrated that high UBD expression was associated with superior DFS (P < 0.001), LRFS (P = 0.01), and MeFS (P = 0.004). Conclusion UBD upregulation was linked to better clinical prognosis, favorable pathological features, and good treatment response in rectal cancer patients undergoing CCRT. These results suggest UBD is a biomarker for rectal cancer.

Abstract
Objective: To reduce the risk of locoregional recurrence, the addition of neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is recommended before surgical management for rectal cancer patients. However, despite identical tumor histology, individual patient response to neoadjuvant CCRT varies greatly. Accordingly, a comprehensive molecular characterization that is used to predict CCRT efficacy is instantly needed. Methods: Pearson’s chi-squared test was utilized to correlate dehydrogenase/reductase 9 (DHRS9) expression with clinicopathological features. Survival curves were created applying the Kaplan-Meier method, and the log-rank test was conducted to compare prognostic utility between high and low DHRS9 expression groups. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was applied to identify independent prognostic biomarkers based on variables with prognostic utility at the univariate level. Results: Utilizing a public transcriptome dataset, we identified that the DHRS9 gene is the most considerably upregulated gene related to epithelial cell differentiation (GO: 0030855) among rectal cancer patients with CCRT resistance. Employing immunohistochemical staining, we also demonstrated that high DHRS9 immunoexpression is considerably associated with an aggressive clinical course and CCRT resistance in our rectal cancer cohort. Among all variables with prognostic utility at the univariate level, only high DHRS9 immunoexpression was independently unfavorably prognostic of all three endpoints (all p ≤ 0.048) in the multivariate analysis. In addition, applying bioinformatic analysis, we also linked DHRS9 with unrevealed functions, such as keratan sulfate and mucin synthesis which may be implicated in CCRT resistance. Conclusion: Altogether, DHRS9 expression may serve as a helpful predictive and prognostic biomarker and assist decision-making for rectal cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant CCRT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated the effects of adjuvant radiotherapy on outcomes in early-stage major salivary gland cancers. METHODS A total of 655 patients were identified, including 355 (54.2%) received adjuvant radiotherapy and 300 (45.8%) had surgery alone. The effect of adjuvant radiotherapy on 5-year locoregional recurrence and disease-specific survival (DSS) was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method, Wilcoxon rank sum test, and Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS There were no significant differences in locoregional recurrence and DSS between patients receiving adjuvant radiotherapy and those not in both univariate and multivariable analysis. Although patients with positive margin status had a higher locoregional recurrence and those with moderate/poor differentiation had a worse DSS, stratified analysis still indicated there were no protective effects from the use of adjuvant radiotherapy. CONCLUSIONS The use of adjuvant radiation therapy was not associated with improved locoregional recurrence and DSS, even for those with high-risk histopathological factors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the most common malignant tumor in southern China and Southeast Asia. Although substantial research on NPC has been conducted, the resulting improvement in clinical outcomes remains very disappointing. NPC treatment typically involves radiation therapy and chemotherapy, but the high incidence of metastasis and recurrence in NPC patients result in poor survival. Therefore, identifying potential biomarkers and discovering therapeutic targets are necessary to design tailored treatments based on the genetic profiles of NPC patients. METHODS Correlations of protein immunostaining with clinicopathological features were analyzed by Pearson's chi-square test. The Kaplan-Meier method with a log-rank test was used to generate survival curves. Multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS In this study, we comparatively analyzed cytoskeletal organization and biogenesis (GO:0007010) and tumorigenesis in the NPC transcriptome (GSE12452) and found that formin like 2 (FMNL2) expression was significantly upregulated in NPC tumor tissues. Moreover, high FMNL2 expression was significantly correlated with primary tumor stage (p value=0.001), lymph node status (p value=0.004), cancer stage (p value=0.006), and histological grade (p value=0.040). More importantly, high FMNL2 expression was significantly correlated with poor survival in NPC patients according to univariate analysis and multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION This study reveals that FMNL2 may be an important potential biomarker for evaluating the prognosis of NPC patients.

Abstract
The external quantum efficiency of a high-Al content (>0.6) AlGaN deep-ultraviolet (DUV) light-emitting diode is typically below 1% in the sub-250 nm wavelength range. One of the main reasons for this low efficiency is the fundamental properties of high-Al content AlGaN comprising the transverse-magnetic (TM)-dominant emission and low light extraction due to the total internal reflection (TIR). This work demonstrates a truncated pyramid nanostructure with fine-tuned multiple facets in an (AlN)8/(GaN)2 digital alloy to achieve highly efficient DUV emission at 234 nm. By applying nanoimprint lithography, dry and wet etching, a hexagonal truncated pyramid nanohole structure is fabricated featuring multiple crystal facets of (0001), (10-13), and (20-21) planes. These fine-tuned multiple facets act as reflecting mirrors that can effectively modulate the light propagation and extraction patterns to overcome the TIR via multiple reflections and enhanced scattering. Consequently, significant light extraction enhancements of 5.6 times and 1.1 times for TM and transverse-electric emissions are achieved in the truncated pyramid nanohole structure, respectively. The total luminous intensity of this unique nanostructure is greatly increased by 191% compared to that of a conventional planar structure. The truncated pyramid AlN/GaN nanostructure with fine-tuned multiple facets used in this work provides a promising approach for realizing highly efficient sub-250 nm DUV light-emitting devices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the roles of inducible costimulatory molecules (ICOS) and related cytokines in the immune regulation of Echinococcus granulosus infections in mice. METHODS Eighty BALB/c mice (weight 18-22 g) were divided into the control and infection groups, of 40 animals in each group. E. granulosus infection was modeled in mice by intraperitoneal injection of 10 000 protoscoleces per mouse. Serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and peripheral interleukin-4 (IL-4) and IL-10 levels were measured 2, 8, 30, 60, 180 days post-infection. Mouse liver specimens were excised for hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and immunostaining, and ICOS expression was quantified in mouse liver specimens using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assay. RESULTS There were no significant differences in serum ALT (F = 12.082, P < 0.05), AST (F = 6.347, P < 0.05) or ALP levels (F = 52.186, P < 0.05) in mice 2, 8, 30, 60 and 180 days post-infection with E. granulosus. The serum ALT levels were significantly higher in the infection group than in the control group 2 [(61.72 ± 9.89) vs. (50.65 ± 4.67)U/L, P < 0.05] and 30 days post-infection [(80.61 ± 23.71)vs.(67.75 ± 9.79)U/L, P < 0.05], and the serum ALT levels were significantly higher in the infection group than in the control group 2 [(181.06 ± 60.61) vs.(115.58 ± 17.66)U/L, P < 0.05] and 180 days post-infection [(137.84 ± 29.01) vs. (108.05 ± 10.33) U/L, P < 0.05], while greater serum ALP levels were measured in the infection group than in the control group 2 [(162.90 ± 21.04)vs.(64.54 ± 5.99)U/L, P < 0.05], 8[(176.36 ± 24.56) vs. (62.70 ± 9.21)U/L, P < 0.05] and 30 days post-infection [(138.86 ± 13.59) vs. (58.60 ± 5.28) U/L, P < 0.05]. A few inflammatory cells were seen in mouse liver in the infection group 30 days post-infection, and no apparent changes were found in the mouse hepatic structure 60 days post-infection. On day 180 post-infection, a large number of epithelium-like cells presented fibrotic growth in mouse liver in the cyst-infiltrating regions, with cuticula formation seen, and plenty of red cells were present in lesions and hepatocyte space. Positive ICOS expression was detected in mouse liver in the infection group, with ICOS-positive cells predominantly seen in the cytoplasm of the hepatocyte, and the ICOS expression increased over time. The relative ICOS mRNA expression was 2.732 ± 0.094 on day 180 post-infection, which was significantly greater than that on day 2 postinfection (0.746 ± 0.049). There were no significant differences in serum IL-4 or IL-10 levels at different time points after E. granulosus infections, while the serum IL-4 and IL-10 levels peaked in the infection group 180 days and 60 days post-infection, respectively. Higher serum IL-4 levels were measured in the infection group than in the control group 8 [(22.50 ± 3.24) vs. (5.82 ± 0.49) pg/mL, P < 0.05], 30 [(15.49 ± 4.73) vs. (5.10 ± 1.38) pg/mL, P < 0.05], 60 [(36.93 ± 6.14) vs. (4.13 ± 1.19) pg/mL, P < 0.05] and 180 days post-infection [(198.35 ± 0.70) vs. (4.19 ± 0.98) pg/mL, P < 0.05], and higher IL-10 levels were measured in the infection group than in the control group 2 [(4.84 ± 1.91) vs. (2.11 ± 1.03) pg/mL, P < 0.05], 8 [(44.72 ± 14.63) vs. (3.16 ± 0.60) pg/mL, P < 0.05], 30 [(25.47 ± 8.00) vs. (3.83 ± 1.87) pg/mL, P < 0.05], 60 [(187.16 ± 60.44) vs. (3.69 ± 1.05) pg/mL, P < 0.05] and 180 days post-infection [(85.40 ± 7.15) vs. (3.25 ± 0.93) pg/mL, P < 0.05]. CONCLUSIONS High ICOS expression is present in the liver of mice with E. granulosus infections. The positive ICOS expression and immune activation levels increase with the time of E. granulosus infections, leading to aggravation of hepatocyte injury caused by inflammation.

Abstract
The variation behaviors of the morphology, transmission, and sheet resistance of the surface Ag/AgO nano-network (NNW) structures fabricated under different illumination conditions and with different Ag deposition thicknesses and thermal annealing temperatures in forming initial Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are studied. Generally, an NNW structure with a smaller mesh size or a denser branch distribution has a lower transmission and a lower sheet resistance level. Under the fabrication condition of a broader illumination spectrum, a lower thermal annealing temperature, or a thicker Ag deposition, we can obtain an NNW structure of a smaller mesh size. The mesh size of an NNW structure is basically controlled by the seed density of Brownian tree (BT) at the beginning of light illumination. A BT seed can be formed through a stronger local localized surface plasmon resonance for accelerating Ag oxidation in a certain region. Once an Ag/AgO BT seed is formed, the surrounding Ag NPs are reorganized to form the branches of a BT. Multiple BTs are connected to form a large-area NNW structure, which can serve as a transparent conductor. Under the fabrication conditions of a broader illumination spectrum, 3 nm Ag deposition, and 100 °C thermal annealing, we can implement an NNW structure to achieve ∼1.15μm in mesh size, ∼90 Ω sq-1in sheet resistance, and 93%-77% in transmittance within the wavelength range between 370 and 700 nm.

Abstract
Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor originating from the nasopharynx with high morbidity and mortality in Southeast Asia and south of China. Roundabout guidance receptor 1 (ROBO1) can regulate axonogenesis (axon-like protrusion), which may play an important role in migration. However, the roles of ROBO1 in NPC have not been clarified. Methods: A comparative analysis employing the NPC transcriptome (GSE12452) and the axonogenesis-related genes (GO: 0050772) was performed. In total, 124 tissue blocks from patients primarily diagnosed as NPC (1993-2002) were examined using immunohistochemical staining. The connections between clinicopathological variables and protein immunoexpression were analyzed by Pearson’s chi-square test. The Kaplan–Meier method with a log-rank test was employed to plot survival curves. Multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazards model to identify independent prognostic biomarker. Results: According to transcriptome analysis, we found that ROBO1 is significantly highly expressed in NPC tissues compared with normal tissues. The immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining showed that high expression of ROBO1 was significantly related to primary tumor (T1T2 and T3T4) ( P = .024), nodal metastasis status (N0N1 and N2N3) ( P = .030), stage (I-II and III-IV) ( P = .019), and histological grade (keratinizing, non-keratinizing, and undifferentiated) ( P = .065). Importantly, NPC patients with high ROBO1 expression had poorer disease-specific survival (DSS) ( P = .0001), distal metastasis-free survival (DMeFS) ( P < .0001), and local recurrence-free survival (LRFS) ( P = .0001) compared with NPC patients with low ROBO1 expression through the uni-/multivariate and the Kaplan–Meier survival analyses. Conclusion: Our report indicates that ROBO1 might be a potential prognostic biomarker for NPC.

Abstract
Objectives: Recently, molecular medicine targeting Folate Receptor Alpha (FOLR1), which mediates intracellular folate uptake and tumor cell proliferation, has been identified in several malignancies. However, the association between FOLR1 expression and rectal cancer remains unclear. Methods: Immunostaining of FOLR1 was performed on biopsy specimens from 172 rectal cancer patients undergoing preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT). FOLR1 expression was measured and divided into low (0+-2+) or high (3+-4+) level. Correlations between FOLR1 status and clinicopathologic features, tumor regression grade, disease-specific survival (DSS), local recurrence-free survival, and metastasis-free survival (MeFS) were analyzed, retrospectively. Results: High FOLR1 expression was significantly associated with advanced post-treatment tumor and nodal status (T3-4; N1-2, P = .001), vascular invasion (P = .042), perineural invasion (P = .012), and poor regression change after CRT (P = .001). In uni- and multi-variable survival analysis, FOLR1 overexpression remained a significant predictor of lower DSS (hazard ratio [HR], 2.328; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.014-5.344; P = .046) and MeFS (HR, 2.177; 95% CI, 1.000-1.1286; P = .050). Conclusion: These results indicate that high FOLR1 status is associated with aggressive tumor behavior, poor response to CRT, and worse survival. Therefore, FOLR1 expression at initial biopsy may be useful in predicting outcomes and also be a target for the exploration of FOLR1-based therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Purpose A lymph node (LN) yield ≥12 is required to for accurate determination of nodal status for colorectal cancer but cannot always be achieved after neoadjuvant therapy. This study aims to determine the difference in LN yield from rectal cancer patients treated with and without neoadjuvant therapy and the effects of specific LN yields on survival. Patients and Methods The study cohort included a total of 4344 rectal cancer patients treated between January 2007 and December 2015, 2260 (52.03%) of whom received neoadjuvant therapy. Data were retrieved from the Taiwan nationwide cancer registry database. The minimum acceptable LN yield below 12 was investigated using the maximum area under the ROC curve. Results The median LN yield was 12 (8-17) for patients who received neoadjuvant therapy and 17 (13-24) for those who did not. The recommended LN yield ≥12 was achieved in 82.73% of patients without and 57.96% of those with neoadjuvant therapy (p < 0.0001). Patients with LN yield ≥12 had a higher OS probability than did those with LN <12 (OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.06-1.66; p = 0.0124). However, the predictive accuracy for survival was greater for LN yield ≥10 (AUC, 0.7767) than cut-offs of 12, 8, or 6, especially in patients with pathologically-negative nodes (AUC, 0.7660). Conclusion Neoadjuvant therapy significantly reduces the LN yield in subsequent surgery. A lower yield (LN ≥ 10) may be adequate for nodal evaluation in rectal cancer patients after neoadjuvant therapy.

Abstract
To evaluate the potential benefit of HyperArc (HA) fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT) for the benign brain lesion. Sixteen patients with a single deep-seated, centrally located benign brain lesion treated by CyberKnife (CK, G4 cone-based model) were enrolled. Treatment plans for HA with two different optimization algorithms (SRS NTO and ALDO) and coplanar RapidArc (RA) were generated for each patient to meet the corresponding treatment plan criteria. These four FSRT treatment plans were divided into two groups—the homogeneous delivery group (HA-SRS NTO and coplanar RA) and the inhomogeneous delivery group (HA-ALDO and cone-based CK)—to compare for dosimetric outcomes. For homogeneous delivery, the brain V5, V12, and V24 and the mean brainstem dose were significantly lower with the HA-SRS NTO plans than with the coplanar RA plans. The conformity index, high and intermediate dose spillage, and gradient radius were significantly better with the HA-SRS NTO plans than with the coplanar RA plans. For inhomogeneous delivery, the HA-ALDO exhibited superior PTV coverage levels to the cone-based CK plans. Almost all the doses delivered to organs at risk and dose distribution metrics were significantly better with the HA-ALDO plans than with the cone-based CK plans. Good dosimetric distribution makes HA an attractive FSRT technique for the treatment of benign brain lesions.

Abstract
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), characterized by the infiltration of lymphocytes, is a malignancy derived from the epithelium of the nasopharynx. Despite its sensitivity to radiation and chemotherapy, NPC has a high propensity for recurrence and metastasis. Although lymph node levels have been indicated as an independent prognostic factor for NPC, there has been no precise prognostic biomarker to predict clinical outcomes for NPC before advanced disease. In the present study, we surveyed differentially expressed genes in NPC via the next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based Oncomine database and identified the spindlin family member 4 (SPIN4) gene as the most relevant to advanced nodal status. We collected 124 tumor samples from NPC patients receiving biopsy, and the expression level of SPIN4 was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The results showed that tumors with high SPIN4 expression were significantly correlated with advanced nodal status (p < 0.001) and advanced AJCC stages (p < 0.001). High SPIN4 expression in tumor samples was an unfavorable prognostic factor for all three endpoints at the univariate level: disease-specific survival (DSS), distal metastasis-free survival (DMeFS), and local recurrence-free survival (LRFS) (all p < 0.05). High SPIN4 expression remained independently prognostic of worse DMeFS (p = 0.049) at the multivariate level. Using bioinformatics analysis, we further found that high SPIN4 level may link tight junctions to cancer cell survival. Collectively, these results imply that high SPIN4 expression is linked to an aggressive clinical course, including advanced nodal status and poor survival in NPC patients, emphasizing the promising prognostic utility of SPIN4 expression.

Abstract
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) exhibits a higher level of glycolytic capacity and are commonly associated with an inflammatory microenvironment, but the regulatory mechanism and metabolic crosstalk between the tumor and tumor microenvironment (TME) are largely unresolved. Here, we show that glucose transporter 3 (GLUT3) is particularly elevated in TNBC and associated with metastatic progression and poor prognosis in breast cancer patients. Expression of GLUT3 is crucial for promoting the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and enhancing invasiveness and distant metastasis of TNBC cells. Notably, GLUT3 is correlated with inflammatory gene expressions and is associated with M1 tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), at least in part by C-X-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 8 (CXCL8). We found that expression of GLUT3 regulates CXCL8 production in TNBC cells. Secretion of CXCL8 participates in GLUT3-overexpressing TNBC cells-elicited activation of inflammatory TAMs, which further enhances GLUT3 expression and mobility of TNBC cells. Our findings demonstrate that aerobic glycolysis in TNBC not only promotes aggressiveness of tumor cells but also initiates a positive regulatory loop for enhancing tumor progression by modulating the inflammatory TME.

Abstract
Rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules linked CdZnSeS/ZnS green-emitting quantum dots (QDs) are self-assembled onto Ag nanoparticles (NPs) for studying the surface plasmon (SP) coupling effect on the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process from QD into R6G. SP coupling can enhance the emission efficiency of QD such that FRET has to compete with QD emission for transferring energy into R6G. It is found that FRET efficiency is reduced under the SP coupling condition. Although R6G emission efficiency can also be enhanced through SP coupling when it is directly linked onto Ag NP, the enhancement decreases when R6G is linked onto QD and then the QD-R6G complex is self-assembled onto Ag NP. In particular, R6G emission efficiency can be reduced through SP coupling when the number of R6G molecules linked onto a QD is high. A rate-equation model is built for resembling the measured photoluminescence decay profiles and providing us with more detailed explanations for the observed FRET and SP coupling behaviors.

Abstract
By forming nanodisk (ND) structures on a blue-emitting InGaN/GaN quantum-well (QW) template, the QWs become close to the red-emitting quantum dots (QDs) and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) attached onto the sidewalls of the NDs such that Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and surface plasmon (SP) coupling can occur to enhance the efficiency of blue-to-red color conversion. With a larger ND height, more QWs are exposed to open air on the sidewall for more QD/Ag NP attachment through QD self-assembly and Ag NP drop casting such that the FRET and SP coupling effects, and hence the color conversion efficiency can be enhanced. A stronger FRET process leads to a longer QD photoluminescence (PL) decay time and a shorter QW PL decay time. It is shown that SP coupling can enhance the FRET efficiency.

Abstract
Heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst prepared by dispersing iron oxides in activated carbon (FeOx@AC) has frequently been assembled for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). An intriguing but barely emphasized property of FeOx@AC is that it can be easily reactivated through a simple carbothermal reaction. Importantly, by this manner the life time of FeOx@AC could be effectively enhanced. We herein reported the synthesis of FeOx@ACs hydrothermally with assistance of several commercially available surfactants and their performance in degrading real dye wastewater were evaluated. In general, as-synthesized FeOx@ACs were noted to equip high Fe content. Deposited FeOx reduced the fraction of micropores but simultaneously introduced additional mesopores and macropores. Elevated magnetite content was observed in FeOx@AC equipped with high fraction of micropore and mesopore and macropore but fast dye degradation occurred at FeOx@AC possessing low fraction of micropore along with low mesopores and macropores. Reactivation via carbothermal reaction redistributed the deposited FeOx by increasing micropores while decreasing mesopores and macropores. Importantly, well dispersed FeOx synthesized with the assistance of surfactants exhibited high resistance to the corrosion in the degradation process. For the perspective of circular economy, deep understanding the material chemistry of FeOx@AC would be of particularly interest for further enhancing its life time.

Abstract
Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from a green-emitting quantum dot (GQD) into a red-emitting quantum dot (RQD) is an important mechanism in a multiple-color conversion process, particularly under the surface plasmon (SP) coupling condition for enhancing color conversion efficiency. Here, the dependencies of FRET efficiency on the relative concentrations of GQD and RQD in their mixtures and their surface molecule coatings for controlling surface charges are studied. Also, the SP coupling effects induced by two kinds of Ag nanoparticles on the emission behaviors of GQD and RQD are demonstrated, particularly when FRET is involved in the coupling process. FRET efficiency is reduced under the SP coupling condition. SP coupling can enhance the color conversion efficiency of either GQD or RQD. The combination of SP coupling and FRET can be used for controlling the relative converted light intensities in a multiple-color conversion process.

We found that high epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression and activity may be linked to HBV-induced sorafenib resistance. We further found that the resistance of EGFR-overexpressed liver cancer cells to sorafenib is associated with low activity of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and CCAAT/enhancer binding protein delta (CEBPD) as well as insufficient autophagic activation. In response to metformin, the AMPK/cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB) pathway contributes to CEBPD activation, which promotes autophagic cell death. Moreover, treatment with metformin can increase sorafenib sensitivity through AMPK activation in EGFR-overexpressed liver cancer cells. This study suggests that AMPK/CEBPD-activated autophagy could be a potent strategy for improving the efficacy of sorafenib in HCC patients.

Abstract
Background High quality lymph node (LN) yield could increase survival, however strategies to improve LN yield have been seldom reported. This study aimed to assess the multiple-step action to promote quality of neck dissection in oral cancer. Methods A total of 400 patients with oral cancer who underwent primary tumor resection and neck dissection, including elective and radical neck dissection, were recruited after propensity score matching by clinical T and N categories between January 2009 and September 2018. Patients were treated by two independent departments in our institute. A multiple-step action was initiated in October 2015 in one department, and another department was as a control group. The impact of multiple-step action on LN yield and regional recurrence were analyzed using multivariate analysis and difference-in-differences (DID) linear regression analysis. Results The mean patient age was 55.2 + 11.1 years, and 92% were male. A total of 180 (45%) patients had T3-4 disease, and 129 (32%) patients had N2-3 disease. The multivariate linear regression and DID analyses revealed that multiple-step action had a positive effect on LN yield. A net improvement of LN yield with a coefficient of 13.78 (p < 0.001) after launching multiple-step action (since October 2015) was observed. A borderline protective effect of multiple-step action for cN0 patients with a reduced regional recurrence rate of 11.6% (p = 0.072) through DID analysis was noted. Conclusions Multiple-step action was associated with increased LN yield and decreased regional recurrence in patients with oral cancer. The observed activity may promote surgeons to improve the quality of neck dissections, is feasible, and could be applied to a widespread patient population.

Abstract
Background To assess the benefit of postoperative radiotherapy in patients with pT1-2N1M0 oral and oropharyngeal cancer by the quality of neck dissection. Methods In the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, pT1-2N1M0 oral and oropharyngeal cancer patients treated by primary tumor resection and neck dissection with or without radiotherapy were included between 2004 and 2015. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to explore the effect of adjuvant radiotherapy on 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) among different quality of neck dissection. Results Of the 1765 patients identified, 1108 (62.8%) had oral cancer, 1141 (64.6%) were men, and 1067 (60.5%) underwent adjuvant radiotherapy. After adjusting for confounding factors, postoperative radiotherapy reduced the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 5-year OS to 0.64 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.49–0.84) in those with < 18 lymph nodes (LNs) removed, but not in those with 19–24 LNs removed (aHR 0.78; 95% CI 0.73–1.13), and in those with ≥ 25 LNs removed (aHR 0.96; 95% CI 0.75–1.24). For 5-year DSS, similar effect was observed. The adjusted hazard ratio was 0.66 (95% confidence interval, 0.45–0.97) in those with < 18 LNs. The protective effect was not seen in those with 18–24 LNs (aHR 1.07; 95% CI 0.59–1.96), and in those with ≥ 25 LNs (aHR 1.12; 95% CI 0.81–1.56). Sensitivity testing also showed a robust protective effect of postoperative radiotherapy in patients with < 18 LNs removed. Conclusion Radiotherapy was associated with improved survival in pT1-2N1M0 oral and oropharyngeal cancer patients without adequate neck dissection.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of HyperArc (HA) for recurrent nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) by comparing it with the CyberKnife system (CK). Fifteen patients with recurrent nasopharyngeal cancer who were treated using the noncoplanar cone-based robotic CK system were enrolled. CK was delivered with a median dose of 37.5 Gy in 5 fractions. The delivered CK treatment plans were the sources for the corresponding homogeneous HA (HA-H) and inhomogeneous HA (HA-IH) plans. The HA-H plans were generated to meet the corresponding treatment plan criteria for the CK plans. The HA-IH plans were designed to emulate the corresponding inhomogeneous CK isodose distributions. These three SBRT treatment plans were compared with target coverage, sparing of organs at risk (OARs), and dose distribution metrics. The HA-H and HA-IH plans consistently exhibited CTV and PTV coverage levels similar or better to those of the CK plans but significantly reduced the dose to OARs. Using the HA techniques (both HA-H and HA-IH plans), the mean maximal doses to the spinal cord, brainstem, optic nerves, and optic chiasm were reduced by approximately 60%, compared to the CK plans. The high dose spillage, conformity, and homogeneity indices of the HA-H plans were significantly better than those of the CK plans. The HA-IH plans showed faster dose falloff and similar conformity of the HA-H plans and dose heterogeneity of the CK plans. Here we demonstrated the HA treatment plan system for recurrent NPC is feasible, either homogeneous or inhomogeneous delivery. Excellent sparing of OARs and dosimetric distribution and very efficient delivery make HA an attractive SBRT technique for recurrent NPC treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is the standard therapeutic strategy for rectal cancer. However, 15-20% of patients undergoing neoadjuvant CCRT progress to recurrence or distant metastases. Therefore, identifying a predictive biomarker is necessary for treating CCRT. MATERIALS AND METHODS We investigated the relationship between the levels of histone ubiquitination enzyme and clinicopathological outcomes in patients with rectal cancer who were administered CCRT and confirm the role of histone ubiquitination enzyme in regulating the cell response to ionizing radiation (IR). RESULTS Clinical data indicated that UBE2B expression was significantly correlated with tumor regression grade. Inhibition of UBE2B elevated the genotoxicity of IR to radioresistant cell lines. In contrast, UBE2B over-expression reduced cell sensitivity to IR. Importantly, the recruitment of 53BP1 and Rad51 was remarkably prolonged in cells after pre-treatment with UBE2B inhibitor, TZ9, suggesting a defective DNA repair pathway in UBE2B-deficient cells. CONCLUSION These results indicate that over-expression of UBE2B correlates with poor response and low survival rate in patients who are administered preoperative CCRT.

Abstract
Asthma is a leading allergic disease worldwide, demonstrating an ever‑increasing prevalence over the past two decades. Asthma is characterized by allergen‑associated airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) that primarily results from T helper 2 (Th2) cell inflammation, in which dendritic cells (DCs) serve an important role in determining T cell development after encountering an antigen. Atractylodin (ATL), a polyethene alkyne extracted from Atractylodis rhizoma (also known as Cangzhu), has proven effective in treating digestive disorders, rheumatic disease and influenza. In addition, ATL was discovered to alleviate mouse collagen‑induced arthritis via regulating DC maturation. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of ATL on asthma given that DCs serve an essential role in Th2‑mediated inflammation in asthma. Mouse model of asthma was induced by ovalbumin (OVA). OVA‑induced airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and inflammatory cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were detected. The production of IgE and IgG1 in serum and cytokines in BALF were detected by ELISA. The effects of ATL on dendritic cells maturation and T cell expansion were detected by flow cytometry analysis and 3H‑thymidine incorporation. Using a model of OVA‑induced asthma, it was demonstrated that ATL ameliorated AHR and decreased the levels of IL‑4, IL‑5 and IL‑13 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and OVA‑specific IgE and IgG1 in the serum. OVA‑stimulated splenocytes were used to demonstrated that ATL decreased cell expansion and the production of IL‑4, IL‑5 and IL‑13 in the culture medium. In order to determine the cellular mechanism of ATL in asthma, splenic DCs were isolated and it was subsequently observed that ATL downregulated the expression levels of CD40 and CD80. Furthermore, OVA‑stimulated CD4+ T cells were co‑cultured with splenic DCs, which revealed that ATL‑treated splenic DCs led to impaired cellular proliferation and the production of IL‑4, IL‑5 and IL‑13 in OVA‑stimulated T cells. In conclusion, these results indicated that ATL may suppress antigen‑specific Th2 responses in an OVA‑induced allergic asthma model via regulating DCs. Therefore, ATL may exhibit therapeutic potential in the management of asthma and other allergic diseases presenting with Th2 inflammation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between textbook outcome and survival in patients with surgically treated colon cancer. A total of 804 surgical cases were enrolled between June 1, 2010 and December 31, 2014. Textbook outcome was defined as patients who had colon cancer surgery and met the six healthcare parameters of surgery within 6 weeks, radical resection, lymph node (LN) yield ≥12, no ostomy, no adverse outcome and colonoscopy before/after surgery within 6 months. The effect of textbook outcome on 5-year disease-specific survival (DSS) was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. A Cox regression model was used to find significant independent variables and stratified analysis used to determine whether text-book outcome had a survival benefit. A textbook outcome was achieved in 59.5% of patients undergoing colon cancer surgery. Important obstacles to achieving textbook outcome were no stomy, no adverse outcome and LN yield ≥12. Patients with text-book outcome had statistically significant better 5-year DSS compared to those with-out (80.1% vs. 58.3%). Multivariate analyses indicated that colon cancer patients with textbook outcome had better 5-year DSS after adjusting for various confounders ([aHR], 0.44; 95% CI, 0.34-0.57). Thus, besides being an index of short-term quality of care, textbook outcomes could be used as a prognosticator of long-term outcomes, such as 5-year survival rates.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the treatment outcome and severe late adverse effects (AEs) between conventional volume and dose (CVD) and simultaneously reduced volume and dose (SRVD) of clinical target volume treatments in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. METHODS AND MATERIALS This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients with nonmetastatic stage II to IV nasopharyngeal cancer from a single institute. Survival endpoints and severe (≥grade 3) late AEs and comorbidity were compared between groups. The correlation of severe late AEs, comorbidity, and overall survival (OS) were evaluated using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression methods. RESULTS From January 2012 to June 2017, this study enrolled 178 patients, 64 in the CVD group and 114 in the SRVD group. The 2 groups did not differ significantly in patient characteristics except for mean follow-up time (37.6 vs 48.8 months; P = .01). The SRVD group did not significantly differ from the CVD group in local control survival (82.0% vs 78.4%; P = .85), regional control survival (89.9% vs 86.0%; P = .62), or disease-free survival (76.4% vs 66.9%; P = .67). The SRVD group had significantly better OS (93.9% vs 67.0%; P < .001) and salvage survival (79.3% vs 20.7%; P < .01) and a significantly lower ratio of severe lung infection (1 of 113 vs 5 of 59; P = .02). The SRVD group had a significantly lower risk of mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 0.3; P = .03). The factors associated with a significantly higher risk of mortality were N3 (regional lymph node stage status of N3) (HR, 3.0; P = .02); comorbidities of diabetes, coronary artery disease, or chronic kidney disease (grades 2-3) (HR, 3.8; P = .009), and severe lung infection (HR, 6.3; P = .007). CONCLUSIONS Simultaneously reduced volume and dose of clinical target volumes did not impair locoregional control or disease-free survival. The benefits of SRVD treatment may include significant reduction in severe late AEs, particularly lung infection, dysphagia, and xerostomia. However, additional studies with longer patient follow-up are required to confirm these benefits.

Abstract
Background To evaluate dosimetric differences of salvage irradiations using two commercially available volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) techniques: RapidArc (RA) and HyperArc (HA), for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) after initial radiation therapy. Methods Ten patients with recurrent NPC status previously treated with radiation therapy were considered suitable candidates for salvage SBRT using VMAT approach. Two separate treatment plans were created with HA and RA techniques for each case, with dosimetric outcomes compared with respect to tumor target coverage and organs-at-risk (OARs) sparing. Furthermore, the cumulative radiobiological effects to the relevant OARs from the original radiotherapy to the respective salvage SBRT plans were analyzed in terms of biologically effective dose (BED). Results Treatment with HA exhibited similar target dose coverage as with RA, while delivering a higher mean dose to the targets. Using RA technique, the mean maximal doses to optic apparatus and the mean brain dose were reduced by 1 to 1.5 Gy, comparing to HA technique. The conformity index, gradient radius, and intermediate dose spillage in HA plans were significantly better than those in RA. With HA technique, the volume of brain receiving 12 Gy or more was reduced by 44%, comparing to RA technique. The cumulative BEDs to spinal cord and optic apparatus with RA technique were 1 to 2 Gy3 less than those with HA. HA technique significantly reduced the volume within body that received more than 100 Gy. Conclusions With better dose distribution than RA while maintaining sufficient target dose coverage, HA represents an attractive salvage SBRT technique for recurrent NPC.

Abstract
Background: Whole pelvic radiotherapy (WPRT) with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) boost has been shown to be effective in patients with high-risk prostate cancer (PC). However, no study has directly compared the efficacy of WPRT with SBRT boost with that of conventionally fractionated radiotherapy (CFRT). We compared the clinical outcomes between CFRT and WPRT with SBRT boost in patients with high or very high-risk PC (National Comprehensive Cancer Network definition). Methods: In total, 132 patients treated with CFRT and 121 patients treated with WPRT followed by SBRT boost were retrospectively analyzed. For the CFRT group, the prescribed dose range was 74–79.2 Gray (Gy) administered at 1.8–2 Gy per fraction. For WPRT with SBRT boost, the prescribed doses were 45 Gy administered in 25 fractions to the whole pelvis followed by 21 Gy boost (3 fractions of 7 Gy each) to prostate and seminal vesicles. The overall survival (OS) and biochemical failure (Phoenix definition) free survival (bFFS) were assessed by using the Kaplan–Meier method or the Cox proportional hazards regression model. The gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) tract toxicity were assessed using the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) v3.0. Results: The estimated 4-years overall survival in the CFRT and WPRT with SBRT boost groups was 91.6 and 97.7%, respectively (P = 0.18). The estimated 4-years biochemical failure-free survival in the CFRT and WPRT with SBRT boost groups was 89.1 and 93.9%, respectively (P = 0.41). No acute grade 3 or higher GI and GU toxicity was observed in both groups. Late grade 3 GI and GU toxicity occurred in 2.3 and 2.3% in the CFRT group, and in 1.7 and 0.8% in the WPRT with SBRT boost group, respectively. There was no significant between-group difference with respect to acute or late toxicity. Conclusions: In patients with high or very high-risk localized PC, compared with CFRT, WPRT with SBRT boost resulted in similar biochemical-free and overall survival rate with minimal toxicity. WPRT with SBRT boost is a feasible option for patients with high or very high-risk PC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM A great proportion of patients with rectal cancer initially present with locally advanced disease and can potentially benefit from neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) for downstaging before surgery. However, risk and clinical outcome stratification remain a great challenge. We aimed to find the potential biomarker to predict the effect of neoadjuvant CCRT on rectal cancer. METHODS We identified epiregulin (EREG) as the most significant predictive marker for neoadjuvant CCRT response from the published rectal cancer transcriptome data set GSE35452. We collected 172 biopsy specimens from rectal cancer patients who received neoadjuvant CCRT followed by radical proctectomy, performed EREG immunohistochemistry, and analyzed the H-scores. We further examined the correlations between the expression level of EREG and clinicopathological features, tumor regression grade, and survival, including disease-specific survival (DSS), locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRFS), and metastasis-free survival (MeFS). RESULTS High EREG expression was significantly related to early pretreatment (pre-Tx) and posttreatment (post-Tx) tumor status (T1, T2, p = 0.047 and p < 0.001), pre-Tx and post-Tx negative nodal status (N0, p < 0.001 and p = 0.004), less vascular and perineurial invasion (p = 0.015 and p = 0.023), and higher tumor regression grade (p < 0.001). In the survival analysis, high EREG expression was significantly associated with better DSS (p < 0.0001), LRFS (p = 0.0004), and MeFS (p < 0.0001). In the multivariate analysis, high EREG expression remained prognostically significant for better DSS (p = 0.003; hazard ratio: 5.599). CONCLUSION These data suggest that EREG is a potential predictive marker and therapeutic target in rectal cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant CCRT.

Abstract
The plasmonic Dicke effect means a cooperative emission mechanism of multiple light emitters when they are simultaneously coupled with the same surface plasmon (SP) mode of a metal nanostructure to achieve a higher collective emission efficiency. Here, we compare the enhancements of emission efficiency among a series of SP-coupled InGaN/GaN quantum-well (QW) structures of different QW period numbers to show an emission behavior consistent with the plasmonic Dicke effect. The relative enhancement of overall emission efficiency increases with QW period number until it reaches a critical value, beyond which the enhancement starts to decrease. This critical QW period number corresponds to the effective depth range of the plasmonic Dicke effect in a multiple-QW system. It also represents an optimized QW structure for maximizing the SP coupling effect. Abstract
To improve the color-conversion efficiency based on a quantum-well (QW) light-emitting diode (LED), a more energy-saving strategy is needed to increase the energy transfer efficiency from the electrical input power of the LED into the emission of over-coated color-converter, not just from LED emission into converted light. In this regard, the efficiency of energy transfer of any mechanism from LED QW into the color-converter is an important issue. By overlaying blue-emitting QW structures and GaN templates with both deposited metal nanoparticles (DMNPs) and color-converting quantum dot (QD) linked synthesized metal nanoparticles (SMNPs) of different localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance wavelengths for producing multiple surface plasmon (SP) coupling mechanisms with the QW and QD, we study the enhancement variations of their internal quantum efficiencies and photoluminescence decay times. By comparing the QD emission efficiencies between the samples with and without QW, one can observe the advantageous effect of QW coupling with LSP resonances on QD emission efficiency. Also, with the LSP resonance wavelengths of both DMNPs and SMNPs close to the QW emission wavelength for producing strong SP coupling with the QW and hence QD absorption, a higher QD emission or color-conversion efficiency can be obtained.

Abstract
Background In a data mining search for potential therapeutic targets to improve the outcome of rectal cancer, we identified PCSK1 as the cell-cell signaling gene most significantly associated with poor response to concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). This study aims to investigate the prognostic value of PCSK1 expression in rectal cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant CCRT. Methods Endoscopic biopsy specimens from 172 rectal cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant CCRT followed by curative surgery were assessed immunohistochemically for PCSK1 expression, and H-scores were determined. Expression levels of PCSK1 were further analyzed for correlations with clinicopathologic features, tumor regression grade, metastasis-free survival, disease-specific survival, and recurrence-free survival. Results PCKS1 overexpression was significantly associated with pretreatment tumor status (T3-4; p = 0.009), pretreatment nodal status (N1-2; p < 0.001), posttreatment tumor status (T3-4; p < 0.001), posttreatment nodal status (N1-2; p < 0.001), vascular invasion (p = 0.003), and perineurial invasion (p = 0.023). PCKS1 overexpression was also found to be significantly associated with a lower degree of tumor regression (p < 0.001). In the univariate analysis, PCSK1 overexpression was significantly associated with lower disease-specific survival, metastasis-free survival, and recurrence-free survival (p < 0.005). PCSK1 overexpression remained an independent prognostic factor of lower disease-specific survival (p = 0.003; hazard ratio, 5.478) in the multivariate analysis. Conclusion Determination of PCSK1 overexpression may be useful for identifying rectal cancer patients at risk for a poor response and worse survival after CCRT.

Abstract
This study explored the prognostic value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in rectal cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT).Between January 2006 and December 2016, 184 patients with newly-diagnosed rectal cancer receiving neoadjuvant CCRT were enrolled. Risk of overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazard models. Stratified survival analyses were also performed between post-neoadjuvant pathological (yp) stage.The mean follow-up time was 72.73 ± 36.82 months. High- and low-NLR patients differed significantly in both 5-year DFS (P = .026) and OS (P = .016). High- and low-PLR patients differed significantly in 5-year DFS (P = .011) but not OS (P = .185). Multivariate analyses revealed worse 5-year DFS (adjusted HR [aHR] = 2.8; 95% CI: 1.473-5.41; P = .002) and 5-year OS (aHR = 1.871; 95%CI: 1.029-3.4; P = .04) in the high-NLR group after adjusting for covariates. After adjustments, the high-PLR group had inferior 5-year DFS (aHR = 2.274; 95%CI: 1.473-5.419; P = .038) but not 5-year OS (aHR = 1.156; 95%CI: 0.650-2.056; P = .622). Further stratified analysis indicated that yp stage II and III patients with high NLR had worse 5-year DFS (aHR = 2.334; 95% CI: 1.158-4.725; P = .018) and OS (aHR = 2.226; 95% CI: 1.165-4.251; P = .015). Additionally, yp stage II and III patients with high PLR had inferior 5-year DFS (aHR = 2.012; 95% CI: 1.049-3.861; P = .036).Pre-CCRT NLR and PLR are independent prognostic factors for rectal cancer patients and could be used as a potential biomarker to identify high-risk patients for more intense treatment and care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) followed by surgery is now the standard care for patients with advanced rectal cancer. Because a certain proportion of these patients have poor response to CCRT, the risk stratification of survival outcomes needs to be investigated. DNA repair responses in tumor cells can regulate malignant potential and therapy resistance. In this study, we analyzed the clinical significance of principal DNA repair effectors in patients with rectal cancer. METHODS We applied data mining for DNA repair pathways in a published transcriptome for rectal cancer cases, and identified that tumors with BRCA2 downregulation correlated with poor response to CCRT. We next examined BRCA2 expression by using immunohistochemistry staining in tumor tissues of 172 patients with rectal cancer. The correlation between BRCA2 expression levels and clinical variables was further analyzed in this rectal cancer cohort. RESULTS Among clinical and pathological factors, low BRCA2-expression was significantly correlated with higher pre-treatment (Tx) tumor status (P = .013), post-Tx tumor (P < .001) and nodal status (P = .044), vascular invasion (P = .008), and poor tumor regression grades (P < .001). In analyses of survival outcomes, patients with low BRCA2-expression were associated with shorter local recurrence-free survival (LRFS; P = .0005) and disease-specific survival (P = .0269). Multivariate analyses confirmed the independent prognostic value of low BRCA2-expression for shorter LRFS (P = .045, hazard ratio = 4.695). CONCLUSION Low BRCA2-expression is a significant predictor for tumors in advanced stages, poor response to CCRT, and shorter survivals in patients with rectal cancer. Poly (adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase inhibitors targeting DNA repair response in cells have demonstrated clinical efficacy in BRCA2-mutated patients with cancer. Further studies evaluating the efficacy of CCRT combined with these inhibitors in low BRCA2-expressing rectal cancers are encouraged.

Abstract
Based on the experimentally demonstrated In content distribution in the InGaN/GaN quantum wells on a two-section GaN nanorod (NR) sidewall, a white-light light-emitting diode (LED) without phosphor is designed and simulated. Following the dependencies of the In diffusion length and incorporation ratio on NR geometric variables of a theoretical model, the height, radius, and tapering section geometry of the GaN NR are designed for controlling the relative intensities of a blue and a yellow emission component to mix into white light. The higher-In upper section of the NR is first excited to emit a relatively stronger yellow component when injection current is low. As the injection current increases, more current spreads into the lower-In lower section, eventually leading to a stronger blue emission component. The proposed NR LED structure provides an alternative solution for phosphor-free white-light generation.

Abstract
With two different residual surfactants, four different metal nanoparticles (NPs), including two Au NPs and two Ag NPs are synthesized for linking with red-emitting CdZnSeS/ZnS colloidal quantum dots (QDs) to enhance QD emission efficiency. Those metal NPs are first connected with amino polyethylene glycol thiol of different molecular weights to avoid aggregation and make them positively charged. They can attract negatively charged QDs for inducing surface plasmon (SP) coupling such that either QD absorption or emission and hence overall color conversion efficiency can be enhanced. The enhancement of QD emission efficiency is evaluated through the comparison of time-resolved photoluminescence behaviors under different QD linkage conditions. Such results are confirmed by the measurement of the emission quantum efficiency of QD. It is found that by linking QDs onto Ag NPs, the QD emission efficiency is more enhanced, when compared with Au NPs. Also, depending on the synthesis process, the residual surfactant of citrate leads to a relatively large increment in QD emission efficiency, when compared to the surfactant of cetrimonium chloride. A more enhanced QD emission efficiency is caused by a higher QD linkage capability and a stronger SP coupling effect.

Abstract
Cell adhesion affects carcinogenesis, tumor progression, and metastasis. We datamined a published transcriptome (GSE12452) of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and identified SSX2IP as a significantly upregulated gene in NPC carcinogenesis among genes associated with cell adhesion (GO:0007155). Consequently, we assessed SSX2IP protein expression and its prognostic significance in 124 patients with NPC using immunohistochemistry and the H-score method. The status of SSX2IP immunoexpression correlated with clinical and pathological characteristics, as well as oncological outcomes. High levels of SSX2IP expression were significantly associated with more advanced primary tumor and TNM stages. Kaplan-Meier and log-rank analyses revealed that high levels of SSX2IP expression, and advanced tumor stage and lymph node metastasis were significantly associated with lower rates of local recurrence-free survival (LRFS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMeFS), and disease-specific (DSS) survival. Multivariate analysis showed that high levels of SSX2IP expression significantly predicted DSS (hazard ratio [HR], 4.290; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.271-8.102; p < 0.001), DMeFS (HR, 4.159' 95% CI, 2.072-8.345; p < 0.001), and LRFS (HR, 3.007' 95% CI,: 1.418-6.378; p = 0.004). We associated high levels of SSX2IP immunoexpression with aggressive pathological features and worse oncological outcomes, suggesting its potential therapeutic value for patients with NPC.

Abstract
Low intrinsic conductivity and large volume expansion seriously restrict the efficient lithium storage performance of metal sulfides. Here, we fabricate a hybrid material of NiS2 nanoparticles/carbon nanohelmets (NiS2/CNHs) to address the above issues. As an anode material in lithium-ion batteries, NiS2/CNHs exhibit excellent cycling stability (490 mA h g-1 after 3000 cycles at 5 A g-1) and rate properties (412 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1), outperforming other NiS x -based anode materials. These remarkable performances originate from the three-dimensional helmet-like integrated architecture of NiS2/CNHs, which reduces the electrode resistance due to the tight combination between NiS2 and CNHs, provides efficient diffusion paths for the electrolyte and Li+ owing to the amorphous nanoporous carbon structure, and significantly mitigates the aggregation and buffers the large volumetric expansion of NiS2 nanoparticles upon long-term cycling thanks to the open three-dimensional architecture and well-dispersed NiS2 nanoparticles on it.

Abstract
Purpose: We aimed to determine whether adding induction chemotherapy (IC) to concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT) improved outcomes in each stage of locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LANPC). Methods: From 2007 to 2013, we retrospectively collected 259 histopathologically identified adult LANPC patients from two campuses in south Taiwan. Among the 238 eligibly treated cases, 156 patients received CCRT (CCRT group) upfront and 82 received IC followed by CCRT (IC group). Of these patients, 130 were stage III (92 patients that received CCRT and 38 that received IC adding CCRT) and 108 were stage IV (76 CCRT and 32 IC adding CCRT). Most chemotherapy regimens for IC are composed of cisplatin (P), 5-fluorouracil (F), and ifosfamide (I), while concurrent chemotherapy (CC) was essentially cisplatin-based. For CCRT as the upfront treatment, a P or PF regimen was usually used in CC. Survival outcomes were accessed with a Kaplan-Meier estimate and a p-value by log-rank test to compare the survival distributions of IC added to CCRT or CCRT as the upfront treatment in all LANPC stage III and LANPC IV patients. The failure free survival (FFS), overall survival (OS), local relapse free survival (LRFS), regional recurrence-free survival (RRFS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), first failure site, and other prognostic factors were analyzed. Results: The median follow-up time of all treated LANPC patients was 59 months. For all LANPC patients, there was a significant difference only in the DMFS favoring IC group (91.5% vs 79.4%, p=0.013). In the subgroup study, for the stage III group, there was no significant difference between the groups for overall OS (IC group 71.3% vs CCRT group 78.7%), FFS (71.5% vs 62.4%) and RRFS (91.9% vs 90.9%). However, inferior LRLS (71.7% vs 91.5%; p = 0.03) was noted for the IC group. In contrast, for stage IV, there were significantly longer OS (75.8% vs 52.6%), FFS (66.8% vs 46.8%), and DMFS (86.0% vs 69.6%; p = 0.02, p = 0.04, and p = 0.03, respectively) rates in the IC group. Conclusion: Adding PIF-based IC to CCRT for the LANPC patients resulted in better outcomes for stage IV patients, but not for stage III patients. A future properly designed study should stratify enough LANPC cases under the structure of the AJCC stage grouping system to determine which subgroups truly benefit from adding IC to CCRT.

Abstract
Four surface-modified and, hence, positively charged metal nanoparticles (NPs) of different localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance wavelengths are synthesized for linking with negatively charged, red-emitting colloidal CdZnSeS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) on the top surface of a blue-emitting InGaN/GaN quantum well (QW) light-emitting diode (LED) through electro-static force. The metal NP-QD linkage leads to a short distance between them for producing their strong surface plasmon (SP) coupling, such that QD absorption and emission can be enhanced. Meanwhile, the small p-GaN thickness in the LED results in strong SP coupling between the LSP resonance of metal NP and the QWs of the LED, leading to enhanced QW emission and, hence, stronger QD excitation. All those factors together result in the increase of the color conversion efficiency of the QD.
