Abstract
Despite a multi-decade decrease in cardiovascular disease, geographic disparities have widened, with excess mortality concentrated within the United States (U.S.) South. Petroleum production and refining, a major contributor to climate change, is concentrated within the U.S. South and emits multiple classes of atherogenic pollutants. We investigated whether residential exposure to oil refineries could explain variation in self-reported coronary heart disease (CHD) prevalence among adults in southern states for the year 2018, where the majority of oil refinery activity occurs (Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma). We examined census tract-level association between oil refineries and CHD prevalence. We used a double matching method to adjust for measured and unmeasured spatial confounders: one-to-n distance matching and one-to-one generalized propensity score matching. Exposure metrics were constructed based on proximity to refineries, activities of refineries, and wind speed/direction. For all census tracts within 10 km of refineries, self-reported CHD prevalence ranged from 1.2% to 17.6%. Compared to census tracts located at ≥5 km and <10 km, one standard deviation increase in the exposure within 5 km of refineries was associated with a 0.33 (95% confidence interval: 0.04, 0.63) percentage point increase in the prevalence. A total of 1119.0 (123.5, 2114.2) prevalent cases or 1.6% (0.2, 3.1) of CHD prevalence in areas within 5 km from refineries were potentially explained by exposure to oil refineries. At the census tract-level, the prevalence of CHD explained by exposure to oil refineries ranged from 0.02% (0.00, 0.05) to 47.4% (5.2, 89.5). Thus, although we cannot rule out potential confounding by other personal risk factors, CHD prevalence was found to be higher in populations living nearer to oil refineries, which may suggest that exposure to oil refineries can increase CHD risk, warranting further investigation.

Abstract
Genetic diversity analysis is crucial for maintaining and managing genetic resources. Several studies have examined the genetic diversity of Korean domestic chicken (KDC) populations using microsatellite markers, but it is difficult to capture the characteristics of the whole genome in this manner. Hence, this study analyzed the genetic diversity of several KDC populations using high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotype data. We examined 935 birds from 21 KDC populations, including indigenous and adapted Korean native chicken (KNC), Hyunin and Jeju KDC, and Hanhyup commercial KDC populations. A total of 212,420 SNPs of 21 KDC populations were used for calculating genetic distances and fixation index, and for ADMIXTURE analysis. As a result of the analysis, the indigenous KNC groups were genetically closer and more fixed than the other groups. Furthermore, Hyunin and Jeju KDC were similar to the indigenous KNC. In comparison, adapted KNC and Hanhyup KDC populations derived from the same original species were genetically close to each other, but had different genetic structures from the others. In conclusion, this study suggests that continuous evaluation and management are required to prevent a loss of genetic diversity in each group. Basic genetic information is provided that can be used to improve breeds quickly by utilizing the various characteristics of native chickens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The southern United States (U.S.) sustains a disproportionate burden of incident stroke and associated mortality, compared to other parts of the U.S. A large proportion of this risk remains unexplained. Petroleum production and refining (PPR) is concentrated within this region and emits multiple pollutants implicated in stroke pathogenesis. The relationship between residential PPR exposure and stroke has not been studied. OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate the census tract-level association between residential PPR exposure and stroke prevalence for adults (≥18 years) in seven southern U.S. states in 2018. METHODS We conducted spatial distance- and generalized propensity score-matched analysis that adjusts for sociodemographic factors, smoking, and unmeasured spatial confounding. PPR was measured as inverse-distance weighted averages of petroleum production within 2.5km or 5km from refineries, which was strongly correlated with measured levels of sulfur dioxide, a byproduct of PPR. RESULTS The prevalence of self-reported stroke ranged from 0.4% to 12.7% for all the census tracts of the seven states. People with low socioeconomic status and of Hispanic ethnicity resided closer to petroleum refineries. The non-Hispanic Black population was exposed to higher PPR, while the non-Hispanic White population was exposed to lower PPR. Residential PPR exposure was significantly associated with stroke prevalence. One standard deviation increase in PPR within 5km from refineries was associated with 0.22 (95% confidence interval: 0.09, 0.34) percentage point increase in stroke prevalence. PPR explained 5.6% (2.4, 8.9) of stroke prevalence in the exposed areas. These values differed by states: 1.1% (0.5, 1.7) in Alabama to 11.7% (4.9, 18.6) in Mississippi, and by census tract-level: 0.08% (0.03, 0.13) to 25.3% (10.6, 40.0). CONCLUSIONS PPR is associated with self-reported stroke prevalence, suggesting possible links between pollutants emitted from refineries and stroke. The increased prevalence due to PPR may differ by sociodemographic factors.

Abstract
Objective The primary objective of this study was to identify predicting factors for local control (LC) of atypical meningioma, and we validated them with comparing the predicting factors for recurrence-free survival (RFS). We also examined the rate of LC after surgical resection with or without adjuvant treatment and RFS.
Methods Clinical and radiological records of patients with atypical meningiomas diagnosed at two institutes from January 2000 to December 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. Histopathological features were also reviewed using formalin-fixed paraffin embedded samples from pathological archives.
Results Of the 99 atypical meningiomas eligible for analysis, 36 (36.4%) recurred during the follow-up period (mean, 83.3 months; range, 12–232 months). The rate of 3-year LC and 5-year LC was 80.8% and 74.7%, respectively. The mean time-to-recurrence was 49.4 months (range, 12–150). The mean RFS was 149.3 months (95% confidence interval, 128.8–169.8 months) during the mean follow-up duration of 83.3 months (range, 12–232 months). Multivariate analysis using Cox proportional-hazard regression model showed that the extent of resection (hazard ratio [HR], 4.761; p=0.013), Ki67 index (HR, 8.541; p=0.004), mitotic index (HR, 3.275; p=0.044), and tumor size (HR, 3.228; p=0.041) were independently associated with LC. These factors were also statistically associated with RFS. In terms of radiotherapy after surgical resection, the recurrence was not prevented by immediate radiotherapy because of the strong effect of proliferative index on recurrence.
Conclusion The present study suggests that the extent of resection, proliferative index (according to Ki67 expression) and mitotic index, and tumor size are associated with recurrence of atypical meningiomas. However, our results should be further validated through prospective and randomized clinical trials to overcome the inborn bias of retrospective nature of the study design.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to investigate the methylation status of major histone modification sites in primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) samples and examine their prognostic roles in patients with PCNSL. Materials and Method Between 2007 and 2020, 87 patients were histopathologically diagnosed with PCNSL. We performed immunohistochemical staining of the formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of PCNSL for major histone modification sites, such as H3K4, H3K9, H3K27, H3K14, and H3K36. After detection of meaningful methylation sites, we examined histone modification enzymes that induce methylation or demethylation at each site using immunohistochemical staining. The meaningful immunoreactivity was validated by western blotting using fresh tissue of PCNSL. Results More frequent recurrences were found in hypomethylation of H3K4me3 (p=0.004) and hypermethylation of H3K27me2 (p<0.001) and H3K27me3 (p=0.002). These factors were also statistically related to short PFS and OS in the univariate and multivariate analyses. Next, histone modification enzymes inducing the demethylation of H3K4 (lysine-specific demethylase (LSD)-1/2 and Jumonji AT-rich interactive domain 1A (JARID1A-D)) and methylation of H3K27 (enhancer of zeste homolog (EZH)-1/2) were immunohistochemically stained. Among them, the immunoreactivity of JARID1A inversely associated with the methylation status of H3K4me3 (R2=-1.431), and immunoreactivity of EZH2 was directly associated with the methylation status of H3K27me2 (R2=0.667) and H3K27me3 (R2=0.604). These results were validated by western blotting in fresh PCNSL samples. Conclusion Our study suggests that hypomethylation of H3K4me3 and hypermethylation of H3K27me2 and H3K27me3 could be associated with poor outcomes in patients with PCNSL and that these relationships are modified by JARID1A and EZH2.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The growth rate of pigs is related to differentiation and proliferation of muscle cells, which are regulated by growth factors and expression of growth-related genes. Thus, the objective of this study was to establish optimal culture conditions for Jeju black pig (JBP) muscle cells and determine the relationship of various factors involved in muscle growth with the proliferation of JBP muscle cells. METHODS Muscles were taken from the femur skeletal muscle of JBP embryos. After isolation of the muscle cells, cells were cultured in a 6-well plate under four different culture conditions to optimize culture conditions for JBP muscle cells. To analyze proliferation rate of JBP muscle cells, these muscle cells were seeded into 6-well plates at a density of 1.5×105 cells per well and cultured for 3 days. Western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction were applied to verify the myogenic differentiation 1 (MyoD) expression and growth-related gene expression in JBP muscle cells, respectively. RESULTS We established a muscle cell line from JBP embryos and optimized its culture conditions. These muscle cells were positive for MyoD, but not for paired box 7. The proliferation rate of these muscle cells was significantly higher in a culture medium containing bFGF and epidermal growth factor + basic fibroblast growth factor (EGF+bFGF) than that without a growth factor or containing EGF alone. Treatment with EGF and bFGF significantly induced the expression of MyoD protein, an important transcription factor in muscle cells. Moreover, we checked the changes of expression of growth-related genes in JBP muscle cells by presence or absence of growth factors. Expression level of collagen type XXI alpha 1 gene was changed only when EGF and bFGF were added together to culture media for JBP muscle cells. CONCLUSION Concurrent use of EGF and bFGF increased the expression of MyoD protein, thus regulating the proliferation of JBP muscle cells and the expression of growth-related genes.

Abstract
Digital pathology (DP) using whole slide imaging (WSI) is becoming a fundamental issue in pathology with recent advances and the rapid development of associated technologies. However, the available evidence on its diagnostic uses and practical advice for pathologists on implementing DP remains insufficient, particularly in light of the exponential growth of this industry. To inform DP implementation in Korea, we developed relevant and timely recommendations. We first performed a literature review of DP guidelines, recommendations, and position papers from major countries, as well as a review of relevant studies validating WSI. Based on that information, we prepared a draft. After several revisions, we released this draft to the public and the members of the Korean Society of Pathologists through our homepage and held an open forum for interested parties. Through that process, this final manuscript has been prepared. This recommendation contains an overview describing the background, objectives, scope of application, and basic terminology; guidelines and considerations for the hardware and software used in DP systems and the validation required for DP implementation; conclusions; and references and appendices, including literature on DP from major countries and WSI validation studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Jeju native pig (JNP) found on the Jeju Island of Korea is a unique black pig known for high-quality meat. To investigate the genetic uniqueness of JNP, we analyzed the selection signature of the JNP in comparison to commercial pigs such as Berkshire and Yorkshire pigs. METHODS We surveyed the genetic diversity to identify the genetic stability of the JNP, using the linkage disequilibrium method. A selective sweep of the JNP was performed to identify the selection signatures. To do so, the population differentiation measure, Weir-Cockerham's Fst was utilized. This statistic directly measures the population differentiation at the variant level. Additionally, we investigated the gene ontologies (GOs) and genetic features. RESULTS Compared to the Berkshire and Yorkshire pigs, the JNP had lower genetic diversity in terms of linkage disequilibrium decays. We summarized the selection signatures of the JNP as GO. In the JNP and Berkshire pigs, the most enriched GO terms were epithelium development and neuron-related. Considering the JNP and Yorkshire pigs, cellular response to oxygen-containing compound and generation of neurons were the most enriched GO. CONCLUSION The selection signatures of the JNP were identified through the population differentiation statistic. Abstract
BACKGROUND The Jeju horse is an indigenous horse breed in Korea. However, there is a severe lack of genomic studies on Korean horse breeds. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to report genomic characteristics of domestic horse populations that inhabit South Korea (Jeju, Jeju crossbred, and Thoroughbred) and a wild horse breed (Przewalski's horse). RESULTS Using the equine reference genome assembly (EquCab 2.0), more than ~ 6.5 billion sequence reads were successfully mapped, which generated an average of 40.87-fold coverage throughout the genome. Using these data, we detected a total of 12.88 million SNPs, of which 73.7% were found to be novel. All the detected SNPs were deeply annotated to retrieve SNPs in gene regions using the RefSeq and Ensemble gene sets. Approximately 27% of the total SNPs were located within genes, whereas the remaining 73% were found in intergenic regions. Using 129,776 coding SNPs, we retrieved a total of 49,171 nonsynonymous SNPs in 12,351 genes. Furthermore, we identified a total of 10,770 deleterious nonsynonymous SNPs which are predicted to affect protein structure or function. CONCLUSION We showed numerous genomic variants from domestic and wild horse breeds. These results provide a valuable resource for further studies on functions of SNP-containing genes, and can aid in determining the molecular basis underlying variation in economically important traits of horses.

Abstract
Despite the increase in government spending on R&D in South Korea (hereafter Korea), there have been limits in enhancing the impact and commercialisation of research outcomes. A new approach to the current mode of R&D is considered necessary to tackle this problem. In 2014, Korea implemented a new competition policy on national R&D by designating six R&D programmes from four different government departments as Competition-type R&D. The purpose of this study is to examine the actual conditions for adoption and to further promote early establishment and wide implementation of the new competition policy on national R&D, and identify the ways for improvement. In this study, we have approached the case with a life-cycle perspective of plan–management–evaluation of R&D. Multiple sources of data collection included documents, surveys and unstandardised interviews with the staff members in the government sector organisations and agencies responsible for the national R&D management. Based on the results of the analysis, we bring suggestions on three areas of improvement: (a) materialising suitable projects to enrol in the R&D competition programme; (b) suggesting competition models for each stage of R&D life cycle; and (c) establishing the institutional basis upon which the policy may be widely adopted. Finally, we discuss possible improvements and the limits of this study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was performed to identify the non- synonymous polymorphisms in the myosin heavy chain 1 gene (MYH1) association with skeletal muscle development in economically important Jeju Native Pig (JNP) and Berkshire breeds. Herein, we present an in silico analysis, with a focus on (a) in silico approaches to predict the functional effect of non-synonymous SNP (nsSNP) in MYH1 on growth, and (b) molecular docking and dynamic simulation of MYH1 to predict the effects of those nsSNP on protein-protein association. RESULTS The NextGENe (V 2.3.4.) tool was used to identify the variants in MYH1 from JNP and Berkshire using RNA seq. Gene ontology analysis of MYH1 revealed significant association with muscle contraction and muscle organ development. The 95 % confidence intervals clearly indicate that the mRNA expression of MYH1 is significantly higher in the Berkshire longissimus dorsi muscle samples than JNP breed. Concordant in silico analysis of MYH1, the open-source software tools identified 4 potential nsSNP (L884T, K972C, N981G, and Q1285C) in JNP and 1 nsSNP (H973G) in Berkshire pigs. Moreover, protein-protein interactions were studied to investigate the effect of MYH1 mutations on association with hub proteins, and MYH1 was found to be closely associated with the protein myosin light chain, phosphorylatable, fast skeletal muscle MYLPF. The results of molecular docking studies on MYH1 (native and 4 mutants) and MYLFP demonstrated that the native complex showed higher electrostatic energy (-466.5 Kcal mol(-1)), van der Walls energy (-87.3 Kcal mol(-1)), and interaction energy (-835.7 Kcal mol(-1)) than the mutant complexes. Furthermore, the molecular dynamic simulation revealed that the native complex yielded a higher root-mean-square deviation (0.2-0.55 nm) and lower root-mean-square fluctuation (approximately 0.08-0.3 nm) as compared to the mutant complexes. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that the variants at L884T, K972C, N981G, and Q1285C in MYH1 in JNP might represent a cause for the poor growth performance for this breed. This study is a pioneering in-depth in silico analysis of polymorphic MYH1 and will serve as a valuable resource for further targeted molecular diagnosis and population-based studies conducted for improving the growth performance of JNP.

Abstract
Objective This study investigated whether pyrosequencing can be used to determine the methylation status of the MGMT promoter as a clinical biomarker using relatively old archival tissue samples of glioblastoma. We also examined other prognostic factors for survival of glioblastoma patients. Methods The available study set included formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue from 104 patients at two institutes from 1997 to 2012, all of which were diagnosed histopathologically as glioblastoma. Clinicopathologic data were collected by review of medical records. For pyrosequencing analysis, the PyroMark Q96 CpG MGMT kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany) was used to detect the level of methylation at exon 1 positions 17–39 of the MGMT gene, which contains 5 CpGs. Results Methylation of the MGMT promoter was detected in 43 (41.3%) of 104 samples. The average percentage methylation was 14.0±16.8% overall and 39.0±14.7% for methylated cases. There was no significant pattern of linear increase or decrease according to the age of the FFPE block (p=0.687). In multivariate analysis, age, performance status, extent of surgery, method of adjuvant therapy, and methylation status estimated by pyrosequencing were independently associated with overall survival. Additionally, patients with a high level of methylation survived longer than those with low methylation (p=0.016). Conclusion In this study, the status and extent of methylation of the MGMT promoter analyzed by pyrosequencing were associated with overall survival in glioblastoma patients. Pyrosequencing is a quantitative method that overcomes the problems of MSP and a simple technique for accurate analysis of DNA sequences.

Abstract
For the development of electronic nanoscale structures, feedback on its electronic properties is crucial, but challenging. Here, we present a comparison of various in situ methods for electronically probing single, p-doped GaAs nanowires inside a scanning electron microscope. The methods used include (i) directly probing individual as-grown nanowires with a sharp nano-manipulator, (ii) contacting dispersed nanowires with two metal contacts and (iii) contacting dispersed nanowires with four metal contacts. For the last two cases, we compare the results obtained using conventional ex situ litho-graphy contacting techniques and by in situ, direct-write electron beam induced deposition of a metal (Pt). The comparison shows that 2-probe measurements gives consistent results also with contacts made by electron beam induced deposition, but that for 4-probe, stray deposition can be a problem for shorter nanowires. This comparative study demonstrates that the preferred in situ method depends on the required throughput and reliability.

Abstract
Pilomyxoid astrocytoma (PMA) is a rare central nervous system tumor that has been included in the 2007 World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System. Due to its more aggressive behavior, PMA is classified as Grade II neoplasm by the World Health Organization. PMA predominantly affects the hypothalamic/chiasmatic region and occurs in children (mean age of occurrence = 10 months). We report a case of a 24-year-old man who presented with headache, nausea, and vomiting. Brain CT and MRI revealed a mass occupying only the third ventricle. We performed partial resection. Histological findings, including monophasic growth with a myxoid background, and absence of Rosenthal fibers or eosinophilic granular bodies, as well as the strong positivity for glial fibrillary acidic protein were consistent with PMA.

Abstract
We report on the epitaxial growth of large-area position-controlled self-catalyzed GaAs nanowires (NWs) directly on Si by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Nanohole patterns are defined in a SiO2 mask on 2 in. Si wafers using nanoimprint lithography (NIL) for the growth of positioned GaAs NWs. To optimize the yield of vertical NWs the MBE growth parameter space is tuned, including Ga predeposition time, Ga and As fluxes, growth temperature, and annealing treatment prior to NW growth. In addition, a non-negligible radial growth is observed with increasing growth time and is found to be independent of the As species (i.e., As2 or As4) and the growth temperatures studied. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy analysis of the GaAs NW/Si substrate heterointerface reveals an epitaxial growth where NW base fills the oxide hole opening and eventually extends over the oxide mask. These findings have important implications for NW-based device designs with axial and radial p-n junctions. Finally, NIL positioned GaAs/AlGaAs core-shell heterostructured NWs are grown on Si to study the optical properties of the NWs. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy of ensembles of as-grown core-shell NWs reveals uniform and high optical quality, as required for the subsequent device applications. The combination of NIL and MBE thereby demonstrates the successful heterogeneous integration of highly uniform GaAs NWs on Si, important for fabricating high throughput, large-area position-controlled NW arrays for various optoelectronic device applications.

Adenomyoepithelioma is a rarely occurring tumor and its generation in the limbs is extremely rare. We report a case of an adenomyoepithelioma over the proximal tibial tuberosity that was treated without any complications after an excisional biopsy with a literature review.

Abstract
Chrysanthemums are well known for their esthetic and medicinal values. Characterization of chrysanthemums is vital for their conservation and management as well as for understanding their genetic relationships. We found 12 simple sequence repeat markers (SSRs) of 100 designed primers to be polymorphic. These novel SSR markers were used to evaluate 95 accessions of chrysanthemums (3 indigenous and 92 cultivated accessions). Two hundred alleles were identified, with an average of 16.7 alleles per locus. KNUCRY-77 gave the highest polymorphic information content value (0.879), while KNUCRY-10 gave the lowest (0.218). Similar patterns of grouping were observed with a distance-based dendrogram developed using PowerMarker and model-based clustering with Structure. Three clusters with some admixtures were identified by model-based clustering. These newly developed SSR markers will be useful for further studies of chrysanthemums, such as taxonomy and marker-assisted selection breeding.

Abstract
Fascin is an actin-binding protein that provides mechanical support and cell motility, and involves cancer cell metastasis. We investigated fascin protein expression in gastric cancer and assessed their relationship with clinicopathologic parameters and survival rates. In addition, we researched galectin-3 protein expression to study fascin action mechanisms. We performed immunohistochemisty with fascin and galectin-3 antibodies in 471 gastric carcinomas, using tissue microarrays. Fascin was positive in 14.9% (70/471) of the samples, and fascin expression was related to worse survival rates (P < 0.001), high clinical stage (P < 0.001), high T stage (P < 0.001), nodal metastasis (P < 0.001), lymphovascular invasion (P= 0.001) and the intestinal type of Lauren classification (P= 0.015). Galectin-3 protein expression was positive in 83.9% (395/471) of the samples and was reversely correlated with fascin protein expression (P= 0.020). Galectin-3 expression was related to low clinical stage (P < 0.001), but not to survival rates in multivariate analysis. In multivariate analysis, fascin expression was related to worse survival rates (HR = 1.56, P= 0.036), and can be an independent poor prognostic factor in gastric cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The need for new prognostic factors in breast cancer is ever increasing as breast cancer management evolves. Aberrant DNA methylation plays a pivotal role in cancer development and progression; DNA methylation-based biomarkers may provide independent prognostic information. We used pyrosequencing to investigate the prognostic potential of quantitative DNA methylation of a large set of candidate genes in a Korean single-institution series of operable breast cancer. METHODS Absolute DNA methylation in 20 candidate genes from an initial set of 30 genes was measured by pyrosequencing of bisulfite converted DNA in 121 fresh frozen breast cancer cases. Survival analyses used continuous and categorized (quintile-based) gene methylation data with time to recurrence (TTR) as an endpoint. Prognostic abilities of gene-only and risk-score models were explored. RESULTS Median follow-up was 5.1 years; 25 recurrences (21%) were observed. Nodal status, methylation of TWIST1, SLIT2 (both as continuous and categorized variables) and APC, HLA-A, NKX2-5, SERPINB5, SFN (as categorized variables) were significantly prognostic; grade showed a prognostic trend. A multivariate model containing nodal status, grade and TWIST1 was a best fit (p< 0.001) in stepwise regression; risk-score based on this model separated patients into 3 distinct risk-groups (p< 0.001). A gene-only model based on TWIST1 and SFN also classified patients into distinct risk-groups (p=0.009). CONCLUSIONS This study shows that accurate quantitative measurement of DNA methylation by pyrosequencing identifies a small set of genes with independent prognostic potential in breast cancer. These genes complement the current clinico-pathological prognostic factors and appear to be potential biomarkers that warrant further validation.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the value of screening ultrasonography (US) in the detection of nonpalpable locoregional recurrence following mastectomy for breast cancer and to describe the US appearances of occult recurrent cancers. MATERIALS AND METHODS During a 36-month period, 1180 consecutive US screenings were performed for mastectomy sites and ipsilateral axillary fossae in 468 asymptomatic women who had undergone mastectomy for breast cancer. All US results were divided into three groups: negative findings, probably benign nodules, and suspicious for malignant nodules. The final diagnoses were based on pathology results and clinical or sonographic follow-up for more than 12 months. The diagnostic performance of US for detecting nonpalpable locoregional recurrence was assessed. The US appearances of occult recurrent cancers were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS Of the 468 patients assessed, 19 (4.1%) showed "suspicious for malignant nodules"; of these lesions, 10 were malignant. One false-negative case was identified. The sensitivity and specificity were 90.9% and 98.0%, respectively. A biopsy positive predictive value of 52.6% was observed. Cancer detection rates were 2.1% with US screenings of mastectomy sites and ipsilateral axillary fossae. The common US features of occult recurrences at the mastectomy sites were irregular shaped, not-circumscribed marginated, and hypoechoic masses with intratumoral vascularities. The most common location was within the deep muscle layer. CONCLUSION Although locoregional recurrence infrequently occurs after mastectomy for breast cancer, screening US enables detection of nonpalpable cancer before it can be detected by clinical examination. Routine follow-up US can be advocated for early detection of nonpalpable locoregional recurrent cancer.

Abstract
Periductal mastitis in a male patient rarely has been reported in the English literature. Herein, we now present a rare case of periductal mastitis mimicking breast cancer, both clinically and radiologically, in a 37-year-old man. Mammogram and sonogram showed a mass with irregular shape, spiculated margin and a nipple retraction, mimicking a male breast cancer. Radiologic and pathologic correlation is provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was conducted to clarify the frequency of the BRAF mutation in primary melanomas and its correlation with clinicopathologic parameters. METHODS We analyzed the frequency of BRAF mutation in patients with primary cutaneous melanoma (n=58) or non-cutaneous one (n=27) by performing dual priming oligonucleotide-based multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction to isolate and to purify the DNA from the formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tumors. RESULTS The BRAF mutation was found in 17.2% (10/58) of patients with primary cutaneous melanoma and 11.1% (3/27) of those with non-cutaneous melanoma. The frequency of BRAF mutation was not correlated with any clinicopathologic parameters with the exception of the patient age. The frequency of the BRAF mutation was significantly higher in patients younger than 60 years as compared with those older than 60 years (p=0.005). CONCLUSIONS Compared with previous reports, our results showed that the frequency of the BRAF mutation was relatively lower in patients with primary cutaneous melanoma. Besides, our results also showed that the frequency of the BRAF mutation had an inverse correlation with the age. Further studies are warranted to exclude methodological bias, to elucidate the difference in the frequency of the BRAF mutation from the previous reports from a Caucasian population and to provide an improved understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of malignant melanoma.

Abstract
Aberrant DNA methylation plays a pivotal role in carcinogenesis and its mapping is likely to provide biomarkers for improved diagnostic and risk assessment in prostate cancer (PCa). We quantified and compared absolute methylation levels among 28 candidate genes in 48 PCa and 29 benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) samples using the pyrosequencing (PSQ) method to identify genes with diagnostic and prognostic potential. RARB, HIN1, BCL2, GSTP1, CCND2, EGFR5, APC, RASSF1A, MDR1, NKX2-5, CDH13, DPYS, PTGS2, EDNRB, MAL, PDLIM4, HLAa, ESR1 and TIG1 were highly methylated in PCa compared to BPH (p < 0.001), while SERPINB5, CDH1,
TWIST1, DAPK1, THRB, MCAM, SLIT2, CDKN2a and SFN were not. RARB methylation above 21% completely distinguished
PCa from BPH. Separation based on methylation level of SFN, SLIT2 and SERPINB5 distinguished low and high Gleason score
cancers, e.g. SFN and SERPINB5 together correctly classified 81% and 77% of high and low Gleason score cancers respectively.
Several genes including CDH1 previously reported as methylation markers in PCa were not confirmed in our study. Increasing
age was positively associated with gene methylation (p < 0.0001). Accurate quantitative measurement of gene methylation in PCa appears promising and further validation of genes like RARB, HIN1, BCL2, APC and GSTP1 is warranted for diagnostic potential and SFN, SLIT2 and SERPINB5 for prognostic potential.

Abstract
The expression of glucose transporter protein 1 (GLUT1) in malignant tumors is increased due to the higher metabolic needs of the proliferating cell populations. Aberrant GLUT1 expression is exhibited in a wide spectrum of epithelial malignancies and their precursors, which occur with low frequency and intensity; aberrant GLUT1 expression does not occur in normal epithelial cells. The expression of GLUT1 in tumors of the ampulla of Vater was evaluated on immunohistochemistry, and the relationships of GLUT1 expression to histological parameters and p53 expression were analyzed. Twenty-one (58.3%) of 36 adenocarcinomas and three (17.6%) of 17 adenomas had GLUT1 immunoreactivity. None of the regenerating or normal epithelia had any immunoreactivity. No significant relationships were found between GLUT1 expression and histological parameters or p53 expression. It was found that histological subtypes originated from different epithelium were strongly related to different macroscopic types. In the ampulla of Vater, GLUT1 expression was associated with malignant change, and might be a useful marker of malignancy.

Abstract
Hyperthermal neutral beams have a great potential for material processes, especially for etching and thin film deposition for semiconductor and display fabrication as well as deposition for various thin film applications. Plasma-induced damage during plasma etching is a serious problem for manufacturing deep submicron semiconductor devices and is expected to be a problem for future nanoscale devices. Thermal and plasma-induced damage is also problematic for thin film depositions such as transparent conductive oxide films on organic light emitting diodes or flexible displays due to high temperature processes in plasma environments. These problems can be overcome by damage-free and low-temperature processes with hyperthermal neutral beams. We will present the status of the hyperthermal neutral beam development and the applications, especially, in semiconductor and display fabrication and introduce potential applications of thin film growing for optoelectronic devices such as light emitting diodes.

Abstract
The synthesis of new 1beta-methylcarbapenems 1a-d bearing aminopyrimidinylthioether moiety at C-5 position of pyrrolidine ring and their antibacterial activities are described. All the compounds exhibited potent antibacterial activity. Of these carbapenems, 1d showed the best combination of antibacterial activity and stability to dehydropeptidase-I (DHP-I).

Abstract
Benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) is composed of well-differentiated smooth muscle cells and dense connective tissue. BML affects middle-aged women who have had previous hysterectomies due to a histologically benign-appearing uterine leiomyoma. We report here on a case of BML from the uterine leiomyoma in a 39-year-old woman that involved the soft tissues, skeletal muscles, lungs and breasts. She underwent a hysterectomy for the uterine leiomyoma, double oophorectomy for hormonal ablation and lung wedge resection to confirm the diagnosis. The microscopic findings of the breast and lung tumor were similar to those of the benign uterine leiomyoma. Therefore, we consider that these lesions were breast and pulmonary metastases of the uterine leiomyoma. We report here on a rare case of benign metastasizing uterine leiomyoma that involved the soft tissue, skeletal muscles, lungs and breasts, and we include a review of the relevant literature.

Abstract
The objective of this paper is to report a rare case of Vibrio vulnificus presenting as meningoencephalitis without a wound infection. Vibrio vulnificus is capable of causing severe and often fatal infections in susceptible individuals. It commonly causes necrotizing wound infections, primary septicemia, and gastroenteritis. A 69-year-old man had meningoencephalitis with lesion on the red nucleus, substantia nigra, basal ganglia, and dentate nucleus as the initial clinical manifestation of a V. vulnificus infection. This is the first case of V. vulnificus infection in which MRI demonstrated the involvement of deep nuclei of the brain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Because magnesium blocks the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor and its associated ion channels, it can prevent central sensitization caused by peripheral nociceptive stimulation. However, transport of magnesium from blood to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) across the blood-brain barrier is limited in normal humans. The current study was designed to evaluate whether perioperative intravenous magnesium sulfate infusion affects postoperative pain. METHODS Sixty patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy received 50 mg/kg intravenous magnesium sulfate as a bolus dose followed by a continuous infusion of 15 mg x kg(-1) x h(-1) for 6 h (magnesium group) or the same volume of isotonic saline (control group). At the end of surgery, serum and CSF magnesium concentration were measured in both groups. The cumulative postoperative analgesic consumption was measured to assess the analgesic effect using a patient-controlled epidural analgesia device. Pain intensities at rest and during forced expiration were evaluated at 6, 24, 48, and 72 h postoperatively. RESULTS At the end of surgery, patients in the magnesium group had significantly greater postoperative serum magnesium concentrations compared with both preoperative and control group values (P < 0.001). Despite significantly higher serum magnesium concentrations in the magnesium group, there was no significant difference in magnesium concentration measured in postoperative CSF. Cumulative postoperative analgesic doses were similar in both groups. However, there was observed an inverse relation between cumulative postoperative analgesic consumption and the CSF magnesium concentration in both groups. Visual analog pain scores at rest and during forced expiration were similar and less than 4 in both groups. CONCLUSIONS Perioperative intravenous administration of magnesium sulfate did not increase CSF magnesium concentration and had no effects on postoperative pain. However, an inverse relation between cumulative postoperative analgesic consumption and the CSF magnesium concentration was observed. These results suggest that perioperative intravenous magnesium infusion may not be useful for preventing postoperative pain.

Abstract
5,6-Dimethyl-2-(4-fluorophenylamino)-4-(1-methyl-1,2,3, 4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-2-yl) pyrimidine hydrochloride (YH1885) is under development as a novel acid pump antagonist by Yuhan Research Center. Previous studies have suggested that the AUC and C(max) of orally dosed YH1885 are dose-dependent in the range of 2 to 500 mg/kg. The objective of the present study was to investigate the absorption mechanism of YH1885 using a human colon carcinoma cell line, Caco-2. The cells were grown to confluency on a permeable polycarbonate membrane insert to permit loading of YH1885 on either the apical or basolateral side of the cell monolayer. The flux across the monolayer from the apical to basolateral side was 3 to 5 times greater than that from the basolateral to apical side. The uptake of YH1885 into the Caco-2 cell monolayer was saturable and appeared to be mediated by a high-affinity transporter, with an apparent K(m) of 1.47+/-0.21 microM and a V(max) of 25.14+/-1.16 pmol/cm(2)/40 s. The apical to basolateral transport across the monolayer was Na(+)-independent, H(+)-sensitive, and energy-dependent. The transport was inhibited significantly by the presence of structural analogs of YH1885 (e.g., YH957, YH1070, and YH1041), some pyrimidine nucleobases (uracil and 5-methyluracil), and nucleobase transport inhibitors (e.g., papaverine, dipyridamole, and phloridzin). These results demonstrate that the apical to basolateral transport of YH1885 across the Caco-2 cell monolayer is partially mediated by a nucleobase transport system, which exhibits high-affinity and energy-dependent properties for YH1885. Saturation of this transport system, in addition to the limited solubility of YH1885 (i.e., approximately 5.3 microM), appears to contribute to the dose-dependent bioavailability of the drug.

Abstract
Various chromium-containing catalysts were tested for the total oxidation of trichloroethylene (TCE) as a model reaction for the catalytic combustion of chlorinated organic pollutants. A spinel-type cobalt chromite (CoCr2O4) among others was proven to be a very promising catalyst showing higher activity and higher CO2 selectivity than traditional alumina supported chromia. Even if both Cr3+ and Cr6+ species were observed on the surface of CoCr2O4, the Cr6+ species was stable under reducing environment. The presence of Cr3+-Cr6+ pair sites and the effect of redox treatments on the activity were investigated to explain the nature of possible active sites for TCE decomposition. Higher selectivity to CO2 of CoCr2O4 was ascribed to the abundance of its Cr3+ species, together with its activity for water gas shift reaction.

Abstract
A new series of 1beta-methylcarbapenems 1a-i bearing isoxazoloethenyl groups on the pyrrolidine ring has been prepared and evaluated for in vitro antibacterial activity and stability to DHP-I. Most compounds showed excellent antibacterial activity and high stability to DHP-I superior to that of meropenem. Of these new carbapenems, 1a,b,h exhibited the best combination of antibacterial activity and DHP-I stability.

Abstract
The synthesis and biological activities of a series of new 1beta-methylcarbapenems 1a-l having tetrazolothioether moiety at C-5 position of pyrrolidine were described. Among these compounds, 1c showed the most potent antibacterial activity and advanced pharmacokinetics compared with imipenem and meropenem.

Abstract
Compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency that requires immediate decompression. We know of no documented cases that describe ecthyma gangrenosum as a primary cause of compartment syndrome. We present a case of a baby with x-linked agammaglobulinaemia who developed compartment syndrome associated with systemic Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection and ecthyma gangrenosum of the leg. He was treated by debridement and fasciotomies followed by primary closure and skin grafting and made an uneventful recovery.

Abstract
Synthesis of pyridyloxy-, pyridyloxyphenoxy- and phenoxylphenoxyalkanate derivatives and their anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities were investigated. Analysis of structure-activity relationships showed that in pyridyloxyalkanoic acid derivatives anti-edematous potency was associated with the presence of chlorophenoxypropionic acid moiety and 2-nitrated methyl propionates contributed to the analgesic activity.

Abstract
Seizures are common after severe cerebral ischemia. To examine the mechanisms underlying these seizures, we determined the impact of prior forebrain ischemia on the seizure thresholds of four convulsants with differing modes of action: lidocaine, pentylenetetrazol (PTZ), N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), and picrotoxin. Anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats were chronically instrumented with screw electrodes and vascular catheters, and then subjected to 10 min of forebrain ischemia, produced by carotid occlusion and hypotension (mean arterial pressure to 30 mmHg). Animals were then awakened. 6, 24 or 48 h later, groups of awake animals received intravenous infusions of the four drugs. The total dose of drug infused prior to either electrical seizures (lidocaine, PTZ, and picrotoxin) or tonic-clonic convulsions (all drugs) were noted. For each drug, a group of Sham animals (no ischemia) served as controls. There were markedly different patterns of changes in the convulsant thresholds for the drugs. For example, at 6 h post-ischemia, rats treated with lidocaine died before convulsing, while the threshold for PTZ increased by 86%. There was no change in the picrotoxin threshold at 6 h, but the dose of NMDA needed to induce tonic-clonic seizure activity was reduced by 70%. By 48 h, lidocaine and PTZ thresholds had returned to values similar to those in Shams, but the NMDA threshold had now increased to a value 62% greater than Sham. Ten minutes of cerebral ischemia is followed by a complex and changing pattern of susceptibility to chemical convulsants. Finding suggests that early post-ischemic seizures may be related to increased NMDA receptor sensitivity.

Abstract
Explosion burns during abusive inhalation of butane gas rarely occurred in the past, but recently it has become a social problem among groups of teenagers. This cause constitutes 1.6% of admissions due to flame burn at the burn unit of Hallym Medical Center. A retrospective review during a five-year period identified 48 patients. The male to female ratio was 3:1. The mean age of patients was 16 years and 8 months. The places where the accidents occurred were commonly bedrooms or motel rooms. There were nine group settings of 27 patients at the time of the accident. Inhalation injury (n = 12) was noted on admission. The average burn size was 28.5 percent of the total body surface area. All patients sustained burn injury on the face, arms and hands and 24 patients among them had extended burn areas on the trunk and/or lower extremity. 22 patients (mean hospital stay; 51.6 d) required skin grafting and 12 patients (mean hospital stay; 22.3 d) were treated with conservative management. The mortality rate was 10.4 percent. Explosion burns during abusive inhalation of butane gas can result in mortality as well as major burn injuries.
