Abstract
This paper describes the effects of murine norovirus (MNV) infection on oxidative stress and histopathological changes in mice. This study uses histopathological assays, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant markers, and total oxidative status and capacity (TOS, TAC). The results suggest that MNV infection can lead to significant changes with respect to the above-mentioned parameters in various organs. Specifically, reduced superoxide dismutase (SOD), Mn superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione reductase (GR) activities were observed in liver tissues, while higher MnSOD activity was observed in kidney tissues of MNV-infected mice when compared to the control. GR activity was lower in all tissues of MNV-infected mice tested, with the exception of lung tissue. This study also showed that norovirus infection led to increased TOS levels in the brain and liver and TAC levels in the brain, while TOS levels were significantly reduced in the kidneys. These changes may be due to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) caused by the viral infection. ROS can damage cells and contribute to oxidative stress. These studies help us to understand the pathogenesis of MNV infection and its potential effects on oxidative stress and histopathological changes in mice, and pave the way for further studies of the long-term effects of MNV infection.

Abstract
Human adenovirus 36 (HAdV-D36) is presently the sole virus identified to be associated with an elevated risk of obesity in both humans and animals. However, its impact on embryonated chicken eggs (ECEs) remains unexplored. This study endeavoured to examine the influence of HAdV-D36 on embryonic development by utilizing embryonated chicken eggs as a dynamic model. To simulate various infection routes, the allantoic cavity and the yolk sac of ECEs were inoculated with HAdV-D36. Subsequently, embryos from both the experimental (inoculated with virus) and control (inoculated with PBS) groups were weighed and subjected to daily histological examination. The daily embryo weights were assessed and compared between groups using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Histopathological changes in tissues were examined and compared between the tested and control groups to ascertain physiological alterations induced by the virus. Our study confirmed a significant increase in the body weight of ECEs. However, this phenomenon was not attributable to adipose tissue development; rather, it was characterized by an augmented number of cells in all observed tissues compared to control subjects. We posit that HAdV-D36 may impact developing organisms through mechanisms other than enhanced adipose tissue development. Specifically, our findings indicate an increased number of cells in all tissues, a phenomenon that occurs through an as-yet-unexplored pathway.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the clinical picture of bipolar affective disorders (BD) in children and adolescents hospitalized at the Clinical Ward of Developmental Age Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (DAPP) in Sosnowiec, Poland. METHODS Documentation analysis of 288 BD patients below 18 years of age. Detailed clinical and demographic data were collected and symptoms present during hospitalization were assessed. RESULTS The mean age of illness onset was 13.6 ± 1.7 years. A total of 86.5% of the studied individuals received a first diagnosis different from BD/mania, and the average time until the proper diagnosis was 16.9 months. In 45.5% the first episode was depression with varied severity, in 29.2% a mixed episode and in 25.3% mania/hypomania. In 48.6% comorbid disorders were present. The most frequent reason for hospitalization was a mixed episode (47.6%). Among the symptoms, irritability was observed in over 80% of patients with mania or mixed episodes, but also in 60% of patients with depression. Suicidal thoughts were experienced by almost all the depression patients, 84.7% in the mixed episode and also 52.6% in mania/hypomania episode. Anxiety was mostly present in depression (40.7%) and mixed episode (22.6%), while moodcongruent delusions in depression and mania (around 20% of cases). Aggressive behaviours were manifested in around half of patients with mania and a mixed episode. CONCLUSIONS In the studied population of children and adolescents, BD usually started with a depression episode accompanied by a high rate of comorbid disorders and in most cases there was an original misdiagnosis. Study results also point to a significant frequency of some pathological symptoms in this population.

Abstract
Nutritional status is a major determinant of hepatocyte injuries associated with changed metabolism and oxidative stress. This study aimed to determine the relations between oxidative stress, bariatric surgery, and a high-fat/high-sugar (HFS) diet in a diet-induced obesity rat model. Male rats were maintained on a control diet (CD) or high-fat/high-sugar diet (HFS) inducing obesity. After 8 weeks, the animals underwent SHAM (n = 14) or DJOS (n = 14) surgery and the diet was either changed or unchanged. Eight weeks after the surgeries, the activity of superoxide dismutase isoforms (total SOD, MnSOD, and CuZnSOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and lutathione S-transferase, as well as the thiol groups (-SH) concentration, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidative stress (TOS) levels, and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration liver tissue were assessed. The total cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) concentrations were measured in the serum. The total SOD and GPX activities were higher in the SHAM-operated rats than in the DJOS-operated rats. The MnSOD activity was higher in the HFS/HFS than the CD/CD groups. Higher CuZnSOD, GST, GR activities, -SH, and MDA concentrations in the liver, and the triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations in the serum were observed in the SHAM-operated rats than in the DJOS-operated rats. The CAT activity was significantly higher in the HFS-fed rats. Lower TAC and higher TOS values were observed in the SHAM-operated rats. Unhealthy habits after bariatric surgery may be responsible for treatment failure and establishing an obesity condition with increased oxidative stress.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most frequent worldwide cause of adult population disabilities. The study evaluated the effects of a 21-day individual rehabilitation exercise training program focused on improving patients' functional capacity. The study analyzed the changes in irisin, chemerin, and BDNF serum levels in 36 OA patients subjected to an individually-adjusted rehabilitation program 90 days after surgical hip or knee replacement. The changes in irisin, chemerin, and BDNF serum levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. A 21-day individual rehabilitation exercise training program significantly increased irisin and BDNF, and decreased chemerin serum levels. The presented study indicates that individually-adjusted exercise training is an important modulator influencing serum levels of anti- and pro-inflammatory factors, leading to positive clinical outcomes in osteoarthritis therapy. Selected factors are considered potential markers of various pathophysiological conditions. The presented study brings new details to the discussion.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), a leading cause of death globally. The presented study investigated the cardioprotective role of dietary polyphenols found in pomegranate peels in an animal model of metabolic syndrome. Zucker diabetic fatty rats (ZDF, MetS rats, fa/fa) were supplemented with polyphenol-rich pomegranate peel extract (EPP) at two dosages: 100 mg/kg BW and 200 mg/kg BW. The extract was administered for 8 weeks. The effect of ethanolic peel extract on the concentration of oxidative stress markers (CAT, SOD, MnSOD, GR, GST, GPx, TOS, SH, and MDA), biomarkers of heart failure (cTnI, GAL-3), and alternations in tissue architecture was assessed. The results showed a significant increase in SH concentration mediated via EPP supplementation (p < 0.001). Treatment with a 100 mg/kg BW dosage reduced the TOS level more efficiently than the higher dose. Interestingly, the CAT and GST activities were relevantly higher in the MetS 100 group (p < 0.001) compared to the MetS control. The rats administered EPP at a dose of 200 mg/kg BW did not follow a similar trend. No differences in the GR (p = 0.063), SOD (p = 0.455), MnSOD (p = 0.155), and MDA (p = 0.790) concentration were observed after exposure to the pomegranate peel extract. The administration of EPP did not influence the cTnI and GAL-3 levels. Histology analysis of the heart and aorta sections revealed no toxic changes in phenolic-treated rats. The findings of this study prove that the extract from pomegranate peels possesses free radical scavenging properties in the myocardium. The effect on alleviating ventricular remodeling and cardiomyocyte necrosis was not confirmed and requires further investigation.

Abstract
Alternative materials for postmortem diagnosis in the case of fatal poisonings are much needed when standard materials, such as blood and urine, are unavailable. The study presents a case of fatal mass methanol intoxication resulting from industrial alcohol consumption. The study aimed to determine methanol and formic acid concentrations in epiglottis cartilage, costal cartilage, and intervertebral disc cartilage and to analyze the correlation between their concentrations in cartilage tissues and the femoral blood. Methanol and formic acid concentrations in samples collected from 17 individuals (n = 17) were estimated using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Methanol concentration in the costal cartilage correlated with its concentration in the femoral blood (r = 0.871). Similar correlations were found for epiglottis cartilage (r = 0.822) and intervertebral disc cartilage (r = 0.892). Formic acid concentration in the blood correlated only with its concentration in urine (r = 0.784) and the epiglottis (r = 0.538). Cartilage tissue could serve as an alternative material for methanol analyses in postmortem studies. Formic acid, a methanol metabolite, does not meet the requirements for its presence determination in cartilage tissues.

Abstract
Methanol poisonings caused by drinking industrial alcohol remain a severe problem worldwide. Education on types of alcohol and their harmfulness and legal regulations limiting the industrial alcohol trade seem to be the keys to reducing the number of poisonings. Methanol distribution in different tissues after absorption is not well understood. This research aimed to quantify the methanol and formic acid distribution in body fluids and tissue material in post-mortem samples collected from 19 fatal victims of massive intoxication with industrial alcohol in the Silesia Region (Poland) who died between April and June 2022. The samples were analyzed using a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID), and correlation coefficients for methanol and formic acid were determined. The results show a wide distribution of methanol and formic acid in human post-mortem biological fluids (blood, urine, vitreous humor, bile, and cerebrospinal fluid) and tissues (muscle, kidney, liver, spleen, lung, and brain). The strongest correlation for methanol concentration in blood and body fluids/tissues was obtained in the cerebrospinal fluid (r = 0.997) and for formic acid in muscle tissue (r = 0.931). The obtained results may be a valuable tool in toxicological analysis and improve medical standards of early diagnosis and targeted treatment.

Abstract
Identifying charred human remains poses a challenge to forensic laboratories. High temperature completely incinerates the superficial tissues and partially destroys bones, forcing the forensics to seek an alternative, for bones and teeth, forensic material that should quickly and cheaply deliver DNA of sufficient quantity and quality. We sought, other than rib cartilage, types of cartilages that could serve as a DNA source. DNA was isolated from the fibrous cartilage of a fibrous ring of intervertebral L1-L2 discs sampled from charred cadavers or charred body fragments: 5 victims of car fires, 1 victim of combustion during a residential house gas explosion, and 3 victims of nitroglycerin explosion. DNA was isolated by the column method. DNA quality and concentration were assessed by RT-PCR and multiplex PCR for 23 autosomal and 17 Y chromosome STR loci. STR polymorphism results obtained by capillary electrophoresis served for likelihood ratio (LR) calculations. DNA concentration in relation to the cadaver's age and post-mortem interval (PMI) were analyzed. All samples (n = 9) yielded good-quality DNA in quantities (0.57-17.51 ng/µL for T. Large autosomal sequence) suitable for STR-based amplification. The isolated DNA characterized a low degradation index (0.80-1.99), and we were able to obtain complete genetic profiles. In each of the nine cases, the genotyping results allowed identifying the victims based on comparative material from the immediate family. The results demonstrate the usefulness of human intervertebral disc fibrocartilage as an alternative DNA source for the genetic identification of charred bodies or charred torso fragments.

Abstract
The liver plays a central role in glucose and fatty acid metabolism and acts as an endocrine organ that secretes hepatokines with diverse systemic effects. The study aimed to examine the influence of duodenojejunal omega switch (DJOS) bariatric surgery in combination with different diets on glucose administration parameters and hepatokines levels. After 8 weeks on high fat, high sugar diet (HFS) or control diets (CD), Sprague-Dawley rats underwent DJOS or SHAM (control) surgery. For the next 8 weeks after the surgery, half of DJOS and SHAM-operated animals were kept on the same diet as before, and half had a diet change. The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed three times: 8 weeks before and 4 and 8 weeks after surgery. Fetuin-B, growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), pentraxin 3 (PTX3) plasma levels were analyzed. DJOS surgery had a beneficial effect on oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) results and the area under the curve (AUCOGTT). The OGTT results depended on the time elapsed after the surgery, the type of diet used, the surgery performed, and the interaction between these factors. DJOS bariatric surgery reduced fetuin-B and GDF15 plasma levels. Interaction between the type of surgery performed and diet used influenced the fetuin-B and PTX-3 plasma levels. A dietary regime is essential to achieve therapeutic and clinical goals after bariatric surgery.

Abstract
Patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are inherently interested in achieving normal or near-normal visual acuity. The study aimed to investigate factors influencing the visual acuity achieved by DME patients after bevacizumab (IVB) treatment. 98 patients (98 eyes) diagnosed with DR and DME underwent IVB treatment (9 injections/12 months). Patients were diagnosed and monitored using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), ultra-wide-field fluorescein angiography (UWFFA) and Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) chart testing. We assessed macular central subfield thickness (CST), non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) indicators and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). After the treatment, patients were divided into BCVA≤75 and BCVA>75 groups. The IVB therapy increased the number of ETDRS letters read by about 9 and 8 in the BCVA≤75 and the BCVA>75 group, respectively. Before and after treatment, the BCVA>75 group had lower CST than the BCVA≤75 group. The treatment reduced macular CST by 177 μm in the BCVA≤75 group and only by 93 μm in the BCVA>75 group. Total non-perfusion area (NPA) decreased in both BCVA score groups after IVB therapy. Normal or near-normal vision can be achieved with IVB treatment, provided it starts when visual acuity is not significantly reduced yet. The ophthalmic screening of DR patients should also target those with relatively high visual acuity.

Abstract
Since biological applications and toxicity of graphene-based materials are structure dependent, studying their interactions with the biological systems is very timely and important. We studied short-term (1, 24, and 48 h) effects of ultrapure (GO) and Mn2+-contaminated (GOS) graphene oxide on normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) and adenocarcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A549) using selected oxidative stress markers and cytokines: glutathione reductase (GR) and catalase (CAT) activity, total antioxidative capacity (TAC), and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, levels of vascular endothelial growing factor (VEGF), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB), and eotaxin. GOS induced higher levels of oxidative stress, measured with CAT activity, TAC, and MDA concentration than GO in both cell lines when compared to control cells. GR activity decreased in time in NHDF cells but increased in A549 cells. The levels of cytokines were related to the exposure time and graphene oxide type in both analyzed cell lines and their levels comparably increased over time. We observed higher TNF-α levels in NHDF and higher levels of VEGF and eotaxin in the A549 cell line. Both types of cells showed similar susceptibility to GO and GOS. We concluded that the short-time exposure to GOS induced the stronger response of oxidative stress markers without collapsing the antioxidative systems of analysed cells. Increased levels of inflammatory cytokines after GO and GOS exposure were similar both in NHDF and A549 cells.

Abstract
This study evaluated the relationship between the retinal nonperfusion area (NPA) presence and the effectiveness of bevacizumab treatment (IVB) in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME). It also tested the prognostic usefulness of ultra-wide-field fluorescein angiography (UWFFA) and OptosAdvance software for diabetic retinopathy monitoring. Eighty-nine patients with DME with a macular central subfield thickness (CST) ≥ 250 μm, with (N = 49 eyes) and without (N = 49 eyes) retinal NPA, underwent nine bevacizumab injections over 12 months. NPA distribution, leakage area distribution, microaneurysm (MA) count, macular CST, diabetic retinopathy severity, and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were assessed. The results show that bevacizumab reduced the macular CST from 420 to 280 μm (p < 0.001) and improved BCVA (p < 0.001) by about 10 ETDRS letters in both groups of patients. Additionally, the therapy reduced total retinal NPA from 29 (14-36) mm2 to 12 (4-18) mm2 (Me (Q1-Q3); p < 0.001) in patients with diagnosed nonperfusion. The effect of the therapy measured with vascular leakage, MA count, BCVArelative, and CSTrelative strongly depended on the zone of the retina and the NPA distribution. We conclude that the bevacizumab treatment had a positive effect on DME and BCVA in both study groups and on the size of retinal NPA in patients with retinal nonperfusion.

Abstract
The aim of this work was the examination of biological activity of three selected racemic cis-β-aryl-δ-iodo-γ-lactones. Tested iodolactones differed in the structure of the aromatic fragment of molecule, bearing isopropyl (1), methyl (2), or no substituent (3) on the para position of the benzene ring. A broad spectrum of biological activity as antimicrobial, antiviral, antitumor, cytotoxic, antioxidant, and hemolytic activity was examined. All iodolactones showed bactericidal activity against Proteus mirabilis, and lactones 1,2 were active against Bacillus cereus. The highest cytotoxic activity towards HeLa and MCF7 cancer cell lines and NHDF normal cell line was found for lactone 1. All assessed lactones significantly disrupted antioxidative/oxidative balance of the NHDF, and the most harmful effect was determined by lactone 1. Contrary to lactone 1, lactones 2 and 3 did not induce the hemolysis of erythrocytes after 48 h of incubation. The differences in activity of iodolactones 1–3 in biological tests may be explained by their different impact on physicochemical properties of membrane as the packing order in the hydrophilic area and fluidity of hydrocarbon chains. This was dependent on the presence and type of alkyl substituent. The highest effect on the membrane organization was observed for lactone 1 due to the presence of bulky isopropyl group on the benzene ring.

Abstract
The study aims to assess the impact of age, pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) and insulin dysregulation (ID) in horses on selected oxidative stress markers. The study includes 32 horses, divided into three groups: “young” adult group (aged 8–16 years old) “geriatric” group (aged 18–24 years old) and the “PPID” group (aged 15–31 years old). The PPID group was further divided into two subgroups: PPID ID+ and PPID ID− based on presence or absence of ID. We measured serum antioxidant stress markers in all horses: total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), ceruloplasmin (CER), lipofuscin (LPS), malondialdehyde (MDA) and thiols concentrations (containing sulfhydryl group -SH) as well as enzymatic systems: total superoxide dismutase (SOD), cytoplasmic SOD (CuZnSOD), mitochondrial SOD activity (MnSOD). Total serum thiols were significantly lower in the geriatric group and in the PPID group compared to the young group. The MnSOD concentration was higher in the PPID ID+ group compared to the PPID ID−. LPS and MDA concentrations were lower in the PPID ID+ group compared to the PPID ID− group. In the selected study groups of horses, older age, the presence of PPID and ID in the case of PPID had no effect on the studied oxidative stress markers.

Abstract
Introduction: There are reports that the TNFα gene (rs1800629) can be involved in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome through an increased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Therefore, we have decided to search for the relationship between the TNFα gene polymorphisms and serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, TNFα, IFNγ) and CRP in women with metabolic syndrome. Material and methods: The study sample consisted of 416 women aged 45-60 years, including 118 with metabolic syndrome. The participants were surveyed and subjected to anthropometric, biochemical and genetic analysis. Results: We noticed that in the group meeting the criteria for metabolic syndrome, the G/G genotype of the TNFα gene was related to higher IL-6 levels than in the remainder group. The carriers of the A/G genotype in the metabolic syndrome group had significantly higher levels of IFNγ than those in the group without this syndrome. CRP was significantly higher in the group with metabolic syndrome, irrespective of the women’s genotypes. Conclusions: The upregulation of IFNγ and IL-6 and CRP suggests that autoinflammatory process may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome. However, a direct relationship between the TNFα gene polymorphisms and inflammatory biomarkers analyzed in our study was not confirmed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low vitamin D (VD) is not always followed by the development of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). The study aimed to assess the prevalence of SHPT and functional hypoparathyroidism (FHPT) in relation to VD deficiency/insufficiency and factors predisposing to parathyroid hormone (PTH) response in old and very-old Caucasians. METHODS A sub-study of the cross-sectional PolSenior project analyzed serum 25(OH)D, intact PTH (iPTH) and C-terminal fibroblast growth factor 23 (cFGF23) concentrations in 3472 (1658 women) individuals aged ≥65 years. SHPT was defined as iPTH concentration > 65 pg/mL, while FHPT as iPTH within the reference range in the presence of 25(OH)D < 30 ng/mL. RESULTS SHPT was diagnosed in 426 participants (14%) and was more frequent in very-old (≥ 80 years) than in the old (65-79 years) subgroup (18.8 vs 9.8%; OR = 2.12; 95% CI: 1.72-2.62). While, FHPT was found in 2269 subjects (85.2%) with 25(OH)D < 30 ng/mL, and was more prevalent in the old than very-old subgroup (89.3 vs 80.1%; OR = 2.03; 95% CI: 1.63-2.52). Multiple regression analysis showed that age ≥ 80 years, use of loop diuretics, decreased glomerular filtration rate, higher cFGF23 level but lower calcium and phosphate concentrations, predispose for the occurrence of SHPT. CONCLUSIONS The interrelation between 25(OH)D deficiency and PTH response is complex. In older adults, PTH response is related to VD deficiency, age, impaired kidney function, the use of loop diuretics and the levels of calcium, phosphate, and cFGF23.

Abstract
The prevalence of diabetes type 2 (T2DM) and obesity is growing exponentially and becoming a global public health problem. The enzymes of glucose metabolism play a role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and T2DM. A pathophysiological link between different dietary patterns, HFD, obesity, T2DM and the enzymes of glucose metabolism can be used as a potential target in therapeutic strategies for the treatment of obesity, and T2DM. The aim of this study was to measure the impact of DJOS bariatric surgery and different types of dietary patterns on glycogen synthase kinase 3 α (GSK-3α), glycogen phosphorylase (PYGM, PYGL), and phosphofructokinase (PFK-1) concentrations in liver and soleus muscle tissues of rats. After 8 weeks on a high-fat diet (HF) or control diet (CD), rats underwent duodenal-jejunal omega switch (DJOS) or SHAM (control) surgery. After surgery, for the next 8 weeks, half of DJOS/SHAM animals were kept on the same diet as before, and half had a changed diet. The concentrations of GSK-3α, PYGM, PYGL and PFK-1 were measured in the soleus muscles and livers of the Sprague-Dawley rats. The type of diet applied before/after surgery had stronger impact on levels of selected metabolic enzymes than DJOS or SHAM surgery. The impact of DJOS surgery was visible for GSK-3α and PYGL concentration in the liver but not in the soleus muscle tissue. The type of bariatric surgery had an impact on liver GSK-3α concentration in all studied groups except the CD/CD group, where the impact of diet was stronger. DJOS bariatric surgery influenced the level of PYGL in the livers of rats maintained on the CD/CD diet but not from other groups. The dietary patterns applied before and after bariatric surgery, had a stronger impact on enzymes’ concentrations than DJOS surgery, and the strong, deleterious effect of an HF was observed. A change of the diet per se showed a negative impact on the enzymes’ tissue concentration.

Abstract
(1) Background: Cancer antigen 125 (CA125) is a glycoprotein that is expressed by tissue derived from coelomic epithelium in the pleura, peritoneum, pericardium. It has been shown that CA125 concentrations are correlated with NT-proBNP in older people with congestive heart failure (HF). We conducted a study on the association between concentrations of CA125 and NT-proBNP in a population-based cohort of older Polish women. (2) Methods: The current research is sub-study of a large, cross-sectional research project (PolSenior). The study group consisted of 1565 Caucasian women aged 65–102 years. To assess the relationship between CA125 and other variables a stepwise backward multivariate normal and skew-t regression analyses were performed. (3) Results: The median of CA125 concentration was 13.0 U/mL and values over the upper normal range limit (35 U/mL) were observed in 5.1% (n = 79) of the study cohort. The concentration of CA125 was positively related to age, hospitalization for HF and history of atrial fibrillation and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, levels of NT-proBNP, IL-6, hs-CRP and triglycerides. We found in the multivariate analyses, that increased CA125 levels were independently associated with log10 (IL-6) (β = 11.022), history of hospitalization for HF (β = 4.619), log10 (NT-proBNP) (β = 4.416) and age (β = 3.93 for 10 years). (4) Conclusions: Despite the association between CA125 and NT-proBNP, the usefulness of CA125 for the detection of HF in older women is limited by factors such as inflammatory status and age.

Abstract
Metabolic surgery ameliorates insulin resistance and is associated with long-term, effective weight loss, but the mechanisms involved remain unknown. Here, the duodenal-jejunal omega switch (DJOS) surgery in combination with high-fat, high-carbohydrate diet was performed on diet obese rats and joint effects of bariatric surgery and different dietary patterns on heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and HSP90 plasma and liver concentrations were measured. We found that plasma and liver levels of HSP70 were lower after DJOS surgery in comparison to the control in the groups of animals kept on control diet (CD) and high-fat, high-sugar diet (HFS) but the postoperative change of the diet led to the increase in HSP70 in plasma and liver concentration in DJOS-operated animals. A high-calorie meal, rich in carbohydrates and fats, significantly increased circulating levels of HSP90, reducing the normalising effect of DJOS. The HFS diet applied during all stages of the experiment led to the higher levels of liver HSP90 concentration. The combination of CD and DJOS surgery was the most efficient in the lowering of the HSP90 liver concentration. The normalisation of circulating levels and liver concentrations of HSP70 and HSP90 may be achieved in a combination of DJOS procedure with a proper dietary plan.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the endogenous fluorescence of the keratoconic cornea in order to analyze changes in the spectra due to the keratoconic stroma abnormalities. Twenty-two corneal buttons obtained from patients with keratoconus (KC, N = 22) at the time of penetrating keratoplasty were used. As a reference, twelve normal corneas (N = 12): ten from the Eye Bank and two from enucleated eyes due to choroidal melanoma were used. The fluorescence excitation/emission matrices (EEM) in the ranges of 250-400/260-600 nm were recorded. Healthy cornea, keratoconic cornea and sclera showed three main EEM bands, which correspond to the following fluorophores: tryptophan residues in the proteoglycan fraction of corneal/scleral stromas, naturally occurring collagen cross-links and the NAD(P)H fraction present in the metabolically active cells. Relative intensity factors S1, S2 and S3 describing the contribution of each kind of fluorophore to the total fluorescence of the tissue were calculated. Normal and keratoconic corneas show qualitatively similar fluorescence matrices, but the statistically significant differences in the mean values of the S1, S2 and S3 parameters for the KC and normal corneas were observed indicating changes in contribution of different fluorophores to the whole fluorescence of the tissue. Moreover, differences between multidimensional distribution of the relative intensity factors S1, S2 and S3 between these groups were demonstrated (p < 0.001). In conclusions: Differences in the relative intensity factors calculated on a basis of the fluorescence spectra can correspond to the changes found in the KC stroma regarding natural collagen cross-links and the proteoglycan fraction. These parameters well differentiate the KC and normal corneas that could serve as an additional tool for the keratoconus characterization.

Abstract
This paper presents the investigation results of the polarized IR spectra of the hydrogen bond in crystals of N-acetylbenzylamine and its sulphur analogue N-benzyl-ethanethioamide. The spectra were measured at 298 and 77 K by a transmission method, with the use of polarized light. The Raman spectroscopy, Hirshfeld surfaces analysis and DFT studies have been also reported. Theoretical calculations of the isolated molecule were performed by using density functional theory (DFT) method at B3LYP/6-311(d,p), B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) and B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,2pd) basis set levels. The geometrical parameters of analyzed compounds are in good agreement with the XRD experiment. The vibrational frequencies were calculated and subsequently values have been compared with the experimental Infrared and Raman spectra. It has been shown that the observed and calculated frequencies are found to be in good agreement, as well as the analysis of the Hirshfeld surface has been well correlated to the spectroscopic studies. Additionally, the highest occupied molecular orbital energy (EHOMO), lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy (ELUMO), the energy gap between EHOMO and ELUMO (ΔEHOMO-LUMO), molecular electrostatic potential and global reactivity descriptors viz. chemical potential, global hardness and electrophilicity have been calculated. In N-acetylbenzylamine the presence of the N-benzylamide fragment is essential for activity.

Abstract
Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of incorrect assessment of mortality risk factors in a group of patients affected by acute coronary syndrome, due to the lack of hazard proportionality in the Cox regression model. One hundred and fifty consecutive patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and no age limit were enrolled. Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazard analyses were performed. The proportional hazard assumptions were verified using Schoenfeld residuals, χ2 test and rank correlation coefficient t between residuals and time. In the total group of 150 patients, 33 (22.0%) deaths from any cause were registered in the follow-up time period of 64 months. The non-survivors were significantly older and had increased prevalence of diabetes and erythrocyturia, longer history of coronary artery disease, higher concentrations of serum creatinine, cystatin C, uric acid, glucose, C-reactive protein (CRP), homocysteine and B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and lower concentrations of serum sodium. No significant differences in echocardiography parameters were observed between groups. The following factors were risk of death factors and fulfilled the proportional hazard assumption in the univariable model: smoking, occurrence of diabetes and anaemia, duration of coronary artery disease, and abnormal serum concentrations of uric acid, sodium, homocysteine, cystatin C and NT-proBNP, while in the multivariable model, the risk of death factors were: smoking and elevated concentrations of homocysteine and NT-proBNP. The study has demonstrated that violation of the proportional hazard assumption in the Cox regression model may lead to creating a false model that does not include only time-independent predictive factors.

Abstract
Linearly conjugated benzene rings (acenes), belt-shaped molecules (cyclic acenes), and models of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with one carboxylic group at the open end were fully optimized at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory. These models were selected to obtain some insight into the nuclear isotropic changes resulting from systematically increasing the basic building units of open-tip-monocarboxylated SWCNTs. In addition, the position of radial breathing mode (RBM), empirically correlated with the SWCNT diameter, was directly related with the radius of model cyclic acene rings. A regular convergence of selected structural, NMR, and Raman parameters with the molecular system size increase was observed, and a simple two-parameter mathematical formula enabled their estimation in infinity. The predicted (13) C NMR chemical shifts of carbon atoms close to the substituted rim of carboxylated models of zigzag (4,0) SWCNTs differed significantly from the pristine nanotubes.

Abstract
Structure and energy calculations of pristine and COOH-modified model single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) of different length were performed at B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory. From 1 to 9 COOH groups were added at the end of the nanotube. The differences in structure and energetics of partially and fully functionalized SWCNTs at one end of the nanotube are observed. Up to nine COOH groups could be added at one end of (9,0) zigzag SWCNT in case of full functionalization. However, for (5,5) armchair SWCNT, the full functionalization was impossible due to steric crowding and rim deformation. The dependence of substituent attachment energy on the number of substituents at the carbon nanotube rim was observed. Abstract
The study was aimed at analysing the epidemiological structure of patients with liver cirrhosis without HBsAg treated in 1980-1988. There were 231 of such cases in this period of time. The most frequent cause of liver cirrhosis in patients under 60 years of life was chronic alcoholism whereas 40% of the diagnosed liver cirrhosis in older persons was of unclear etiology. Patients complaints, clinical examinations, and results of the laboratory tests were analysed. The course of the disease was more severe in alcohol-produced liver cirrhosis leading to the haemorrhage from esophageal varices in 36%, and coma in 8% of cases. Alcohol-produced liver cirrhosis promoted other complications such as: cancer of the liver, hepato-renal syndrome or encephalopathy. Liver cirrhosis of unclear etiology in the elderly may be a consequence of the prolonged exposition to environmental pollutants. More severe course of alcohol-produced liver cirrhosis may depend on simultaneous action of two harmful factors: alcohol and environmental pollutants.

Abstract
The authors present three patients with fever of hectic profile following partial excluding jejuno-ileal anastomosis for extreme obesity. Cause of such a high fever was not detected in any patient. Despite the treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics and intensive treatment no decrease in body temperature was achieved. Failure of these conservative methods forced surgeons to restore physiological integrity of the small intestine. Rapid normalization of body temperature and improvement in patients health status were noted after surgery.

Abstract
Parameters of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis in diabetic patients chronically treated with oral hypoglycaemic agents and insulin have been analysed. All examined patients were divided into four subgroups: I-treated with biguanides, II-treated with sulfonylurea derivatives, III-sulfonylurea and biguanide derivatives simultaneously, IV-treated with insulin. Observed decrease in haemostasis parameters and activation of fibrinolysis in patients treated with only biguanides seemed associated with favourable effect of these agents on the decrease in the risk of the thrombotic complications in diabetes mellitus.
