Abstract
The risk of schizophrenia is increased in offspring whose mothers experience malnutrition during pregnancy. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are dietary components that are crucial for the structural and functional integrity of neural cells, and PUFA deficiency has been shown to be a risk factor for schizophrenia. Here, we show that gestational and early postnatal dietary deprivation of two PUFAs-arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-elicited schizophrenia-like phenotypes in mouse offspring at adulthood. In the PUFA-deprived mouse group, we observed lower motivation and higher sensitivity to a hallucinogenic drug resembling the prodromal symptoms in schizophrenia. Furthermore, a working-memory task-evoked hyper-neuronal activity in the medial prefrontal cortex was also observed, along with the downregulation of genes in the prefrontal cortex involved in oligodendrocyte integrity and the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic system. Regulation of these genes was mediated by the nuclear receptor genes Rxr and Ppar, whose promoters were hyper-methylated by the deprivation of dietary AA and DHA. In addition, the RXR agonist bexarotene upregulated oligodendrocyte- and GABA-related gene expression and suppressed the sensitivity of mice to the hallucinogenic drug. Notably, the expression of these nuclear receptor genes were also downregulated in hair-follicle cells from schizophrenia patients. These results suggest that PUFA deficiency during the early neurodevelopmental period in mice could model the prodromal state of schizophrenia through changes in the epigenetic regulation of nuclear receptor genes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE MR plaque imaging is used to evaluate the risk of embolic complications during carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stent placement. However, its performance for characterizing intraplaque components has varied across studies and is generally suboptimal. Hence, we correlated MR imaging results with histologic findings to determine whether a combination of high-contrast T1-weighted imaging and quantitative image analysis could readily determine plaque characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS We prospectively examined 40 consecutive patients before carotid endarterectomy by using a 1.5T scanner and axial T1-weighted spin-echo images under optimized scanning conditions. The percentage areas of intraplaque fibrous tissue, lipid/necrosis, and hemorrhage were calculated automatically by using the software with previously reported cutoff values and were compared with those of the specimens. The thickness of the fibrous cap was also measured manually. RESULTS The percentage areas of fibrous, lipid/necrotic, and hemorrhagic components were 5.7%-98.7%, 1.3%-65.7%, and 0%-82.0%, respectively, as determined by the MR images, whereas the corresponding values were 4.8%-92.3%, 7.0%-93.8%, and 0%-70.4%, respectively, as determined by histologic examination. Significant positive correlation and agreement were observed between MR images and histologic specimens (r = 0.92, 0.79, and 0.92; intraclass correlation coefficients = 0.91, 0.67, and 0.89; respectively). Thickness of the fibrous caps on MR images (0.21-0.87 mm) and in the specimens (0.14-0.83 mm) also showed positive correlation and agreement (r = 0.61, intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.59). CONCLUSIONS Quantitative analysis of high-contrast T1-weighted images can accurately evaluate the composition of carotid plaques in carotid endarterectomy candidates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Electrocardiographic gating, commonly used in MR carotid plaque imaging, can negatively affect intraplaque contrast if the TR is inappropriate. The present study aimed to determine whether a non-gated technique with appropriate TRs can accurately evaluate intraplaque characteristics in specimens excised by CEA. MATERIALS AND METHODS We prospectively examined 40 consecutive patients who underwent CEA (59-82 years of age) by using a 1.5T scanner. Axial T1WI with a TR of 500 ms and PDWI and T2WI with a TR of 3000 ms with a self-navigated rotating-blade scan instead of cardiac gating were obtained. Signal intensities of the plaque and adjacent muscle were measured, and the CR on T1WI, PDWI, and T2WI as well as the gray-scale median on US were correlated with the pathologic findings of the CEA specimens. RESULTS On T1WI, the CRs of the carotid plaques differed significantly among groups in which the main components were histologically confirmed as fibrous tissue, lipid/necrosis, and hemorrhage (0.54-1.17, 1.16-1.53, and 1.40-2.29, respectively). The sensitivity and specificity for discriminating lipid/necrosis/hemorrhage from fibrous tissue were 96% and 100%, respectively. On T2WI, the CRs of plaques with lipid/necrosis were significantly higher than those of other groups, but the CRs on PDWI and the gray-scale median on US were not significantly different among the groups. CONCLUSIONS Non-gated MR plaque imaging, particularly T1WI, can readily predict the intraplaque main components of the carotid artery with high sensitivity and specificity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Periodontitis is characterized by periodontal tissue inflammation and alveolar bone loss. The intermittent administration of parathyroid hormone (PTH), a major regulator of bone remodeling, has been demonstrated to stimulate osteoblastic activity. Although the systemic administration of PTH has been reported to protect against periodontitis-associated bone loss, the effect of the topical administration of PTH is unclear. In this study, the effect of intermittent administration of PTH on osteoblastic differentiation was examined in cultured calvaria cells and then the effect of topical and intermittent administration of PTH was determined by measuring the recovery of alveolar bone loss after inducing experimental periodontitis in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS Alkaline phosphatase activity and bone nodule formation were measured in fetal rat calvaria cells. Experimental periodontitis was induced by placing nylon ligature around rat maxillary molars for 20 d. After ligature removal (day 0), PTH was topically injected into buccal gingiva three times a week for 10 wk. Micro-computed tomography analysis and histological examination were performed on days 35 and 70. RESULTS Intermittent exposure of PTH in calvaria cells increased alkaline phosphatase activity and bone nodule formation by 1.4- and 2.4-fold, respectively. Ligature procedures induced marked alveolar bone loss around the molars on day 0 and greater bone recovery was observed in the PTH-treated rats on day 70. An increase in osteoid formation on the surface of alveolar bone was detected in the PTH-treated rats. CONCLUSION Intermittent treatment with PTH stimulated osteoblastic differentiation in fetal rat calvaria cell cultures, and topical and intermittent administration of PTH recovered alveolar bone loss in rat experimental periodontitis.

Abstract
There are very few data on serum procalcitonin (PCT) levels in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients who are negative for HIV. We assessed serum PCT in consecutive patients diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis or community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) on admission to discriminate between PTB and CAP, and examined the value of prognostic factors in PTB. 102 PTB patients, 62 CAP patients, and 34 healthy volunteers were enrolled. Serum PCT in PTB patients was significantly lower than in CAP patients (mean ± sd 0.21 ± 0.49 versus 4.10 ± 8.68 ng·mL⁻¹; p < 0.0001). By receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis, serum PCT was an appropriate discrimination marker for PTB and CAP (area under the curve 0.866). PTB patients with ≥ 0.5 ng·mL⁻¹ (normal cut-off) had significantly shorter survival than those with < 0.5 ng·mL⁻¹ (p < 0.0001). Serum PCT is not habitually elevated in HIV-negative PTB patients and is a useful biomarker for discriminating between PTB and CAP; however, when serum PCT is outside the normal range, it is a poor prognostic marker.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE It is conceivable that the active components extracted from milk whey protein (i.e. milk basic protein, MBP) stimulate bone formation and suppress bone resorption. Periodontitis is characterized by excessive alveolar bone resorption. We examined whether milk basic protein could recover alveolar bone loss in rat experimental periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS A nylon ligature was placed around the cervix of molars in 8-wk-old male Fischer rats for 20 d. Then, the ligature was removed and a powder diet containing 0.2 or 1.0% milk basic protein was provided daily for another 45-90 d. On days 45 and 90, the maxillae were extracted and analyzed using microcomputerized tomography (micro-CT), followed by histological analysis. RESULTS Micro-CT images showed that alveolar bone resorption was severely induced around the molar by the 20-d ligature procedure. Treatment with high-dose milk basic protein (1.0%) clearly recovered ligature-induced alveolar bone resorption on days 45 and 90, whereas low-dose milk basic protein (0.2%) did not show such a clear effect. Histological examination clarified that the osteoid thickness of alveolar bone was dose dependently increased by milk basic protein treatment for 90 d. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that a systemic administration of milk basic protein may be effective for the recovery of alveolar bone loss in periodontitis.

Abstract
AIMS Flow cytometry offers rapid and reliable analyses of bacteria in milk. However, a flow cytometer is relatively expensive and operation is rather complicated for an unskilled operator. We applied flow cytometry using a microfluidic device (on-chip flow cytometry) in detection of small amounts of milk-spoiling bacteria. METHODS AND RESULTS Pseudomonas cells in milk were in situ hybridized with Cy5-labelled probe specific for Pseudomonas spp. under optimized condition. Numbers of Pseudomonas cells in the stationary phase and in the starved state determined by on-chip flow cytometry were compared with those determined by conventional plate counting, and on-chip flow cytometry detected targeted cells in milk that were undetectable as colony forming units(CFU) on Standards Methods Agar. CONCLUSIONS The contamination in milk with fewer than 10 CFU ml(-1) of targeted cells in starved state was detectable with simple procedure (0.5 h milk-clearing, 1 h fixation, 2 h hybridization and 0.5 h on-chip flow cytometry following 12 h enrichment of cells). SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY On-chip flow cytometry following fluorescence in situ hybridization could be applicable to simple detection of milk-spoiling bacteria.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Patients with prolapsing internal hemorrhoids were treated with a novel sclerosing agent (OC-108), and the results were compared with surgery of ligation and excision. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study included 20 years or older patients with prolapsing internal hemorrhoids who visited ten medical institutions in Japan from October 2000 to October 2002. Investigation on surgery was also performed. RESULTS Comparing OC-108 and surgery in patients with third- and fourth-degree internal hemorrhoids according to the Goligher's classification, for which surgery has been generally indicated, at 28 days after treatment, the disappearance rate of prolapse was similar between OC-108 and surgery, 94% (75/80 patients) and 99% (84/85 patients), respectively. The 1-year recurrence rate was 16% (12/73 patients) in the OC-108 group, and this value was satisfactory because of its less invasive nature while it was more or less higher compared with 2% (2/81 patients) in the surgery group. The incidences of pain and bleeding were lower in the OC-108 group. CONCLUSIONS OC-108 is a useful alternative treatment for hemorrhoids.

Abstract
The relationship between seasonal variation and the effect of several different environmental factors on chromophore composition was investigated in the eye of the Japanese dace, Tribolodon hakonensis which lives either in rivers or in the sea. Eyes obtained from river and sea populations had both retinal (A1) and 3,4-didehydroretinal (A2) all through the year but the ratio of these chromophores showed seasonal variation the relative amount of A2 was higher in winter and lower in summer. Besides seasonal variation, A2 showed marked differences depending on habitat: the highest proportion of A2 was 67% in January and the lowest 13% in July, in the river population, whereas in the sea population the highest and the lowest values were only 30 and 6%, respectively, during the same months. The seasonal variation in gonadosomatic index showed no correlation to variations in A2 proportion, and the maximum difference in water temperature between summer and winter was ca. 15 degrees C for both habitats. Because spectral conditions at the locations of capture of both river and sea populations were similar, we conclude that Japanese dace eyes are affected by exogenous factors related to differences between freshwater and seawater environments.

Abstract
The present study describes the application of several chemiluminescent (CL) methods for evaluation of antioxidant and immunomodulation effects of psychotropic drugs upon phagocytes: KO2-induced luminal-dependent CL for detection of superoxide anion radicals in a pure chemical system; PMA- and A23187-induced CL of peritoneal macrophages for detection of free radicals in cell suspension; and CL, produced by the luciferase-catalyzed luciferin + ATP reaction, for evaluation of cell viability before and after drug application. These methods provide also a way to investigate the location of drug action. It was found that the psychotropic drugs in fluence the 'oxidative burst' of macrophages through two mechanisms: by expression of drug antioxidant properties and/or by a direct immunomodulation effect.

Abstract
A procedure for separation of leukemic T-cells from normal lymphocytes, using lectin-affinity column chromatography, is described. CNBr-activated Sepharose 6MB was used as a non-mobile phase. The gel was covalently coupled with soybean agglutinin (SBA), then served as an affinity probe for fractionation of mixture of normal lymphocytes and leukemic cells. Leukemic cell lines, derived from acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Jurkat, MOLT-4, RPMI-8402), were tested. The elution of normal lymphocytes was carried out by PBS(-). The leukemic T-cells, interacting with SBA, were removed by N-acetyl-D-galactosamine or low-concentration acetic acid. The type and viability of the separated cell fractions were analyzed by flow cytometry and fluorescent microscopy, using adequate fluorescent antibodies. The interaction of leukemic T-cells with free SBA, as well as with SBA-conjugated Sepharose beads, was examined fluorimetrically and visualized by fluorescent microscopy, using FITC-SBA as a marker. The rate of cell elution on SBA-affinity column decreased in order: normal > leukemic T-cells. Both normal lymphocytes and leukemic T-cells were removed in a mixture from SBA-free Sepharose 6MB by PBS(-) and were not fractionated discretely. The leukemic T-cells specifically interacted with SBA as well as with SBA-affinity adsorbent. In contrast, the normal lymphocytes did not interact with free SBA as well as with SBA-conjugated Sepharose beads in the concentrations applied. The method potentially combines a discrete cell fractionation with manifestation of a specific target cytotoxicity of SBA against leukemic T-cells, without any influence on normal lymphocytes.

Abstract
Utilization of leukemic T-cells from normal ones, using lectin-affinity adsorbents, is described. CNBr-activated Sepharose 6MB was covalently coupled to Soybean (SBA) or Dolichos Biflorus Agglutinins (DBA), then serves as an affinity probe for separation of leukemic T-cells from normal lymphocytes. The normal lymphocytes were removed almost completely by phosphate buffered saline (Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) free) (PBS(-)) from lectin-affinity column. More than 80% of the leukemic T-cells were retained on the lectin-affinity adsorbent, whereas another 10-15% were easily removed by PBS(-). There was a very good linear correlation between percent of cells, retained on the lectin-affinity adsorbent and percent of cells, interacting with the respective free lectin (r=0.97 for SBA, and r=0.93 for DBA). The viability of normal lymphocytes was not influenced after passing through the columns. In the case of leukemic T-cells - about 90% of the easily removed cells were dead, and another 10% were viable cells, non-interacting with DBA or SBA.

Abstract
The effects of some phenothiazines (promethazine, PMZ; chlorpromazine, CPZ; levomepromazine, LVPZ; thioridazine, TRDZ; trifluoperazine, TFPZ) on the activation and viability of rat peritoneal macrophages were investigated. The macrophage activation was estimated by measuring of luminol-dependent chemiluminescence, induced by phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) (a protein kinase C activator) or calcium ionophore A23187. The viability of macrophages was determined using ATP bioluminescence as a criterion of cell viability. It was observed that all drugs, in concentrations higher than 1 micromol/L, markedly decreased the chemiluminescent index of PMA-activated or A23187-activated macrophages. The inhibitory effect was dose-dependent. It was better expressed in the case of CPZ, followed by TFPZ and TRDZ, and less expressed in the case of PMZ and LVPZ. The suppression of chemiluminescence of PMA-/A23187-activated macrophages by phenothiazines was not a result of their cytotoxic effect. Moreover, it was found that all drugs dose-dependently enhanced the viability of macrophages, estimated by ATP production. The inhibitory effects of phenothiazines on the chemiluminescence of PMA-/A23187-activated macrophages were greater than their ability to decrease KO2-induced chemiluminescence as a result of interaction with superoxide radicals. It may be supposed that the inhibitory effect of phenothiazines on PMA-/A23187-induced chemiluminescence of macrophages is a result not only of interaction between drugs and superoxide radicals, generated during the "oxidative burst" of activated cells. Presumably the drugs have an immunomodulating effect on rat peritoneal macrophages.

Abstract
A method for rapid fractionation of normal and leukemic T-cells (Jurkat, RPMI-8402, MOLT-4), using lectin-affinity column chromatography, is described. CNBr-activated Sepharose 6MB was used as a non-mobile phase. The gel was covalently conjugated with Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA) over 24 h. The normal cells were eluted by phosphate buffered saline (Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) free), while the leukemic T-cells, interacting with DBA, were removed by N-acetyl-D-galactosamine or by low-concentrated acetic acid as a mobile phase. The cell fractions were detected spectrophotometrically at 600 nm. The rate of cell elution decreased in the order: normal>leukemic T-cells. The viability and the type of separated T-cell fractions were characterized by flow cytometry, using adequate fluorescent antibodies. The interactions between leukemic T-cells and DBA-saturated Sepharose beads were examined by fluorescent microscopy, using fluorescent isothiocyanate-DBA as a fluorescent marker.

Abstract
The "contact reaction" is an extremely rapid allogeneic cytotoxic reaction (ACR) mediated by hemocytes in the solitary ascidian Halocynthia roretzi. It has been proposed that regulation of the alloreactivity of hemocytes may be involved in preference for fertilization or self-sterility in this species. To identify the receptors and target ligands involved both in self-recognition by somatic cells and self-discrimination by gametes, we produced monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that inhibit the ACR mediated by hemocytes and tested their effects on fertilization. Six different mAbs that inhibit the ACR were prepared and categorized into three groups. Although all three mAbs seemed to have the same ability to inhibit the ACR, almost constant and statistically significant inhibition (CRB1.1) and infrequent but significant inhibition (CRB2.1, and CRB3.1) of the ACR were observed in the same pairs of animals. Pretreatment of the unfertilized eggs with CRB1.1, CRB2.1, and CRB3.1, resulted in the constant and statistically significant inhibition, infrequent but significant inhibition, and no inhibition, respectively, of fertilization. Antigens recognized by CRB1.1 (CRB1.1 antigens) were detected on the cell surface of all types of hemocytes and on the vitelline coat and follicle cells of unfertilized eggs. CRB2.1 and CRB3.1 antigens were detected on the surface of certain types of hemocytes and follicle cells, but not on the vitelline coat. CRB mAbs were directed against different epitopes in the N-linked glycan on glycoproteins. These common carbohydrate antigens on somatic cells and gametes may function in some recognition processes in ACR and fertilization in H. roretzi.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the effects of methamphetamine and scopolamine on the striatal dopamine D(1) receptor binding, measured by [(11)C]SCH23390, and D(1) receptor-coupled cAMP messenger system, determined as phosphodiesterase type-IV (PDE-IV) activity, were evaluated in the brains of conscious monkeys using positron emission tomography (PET) with microdialysis. When methamphetamine (0.1, 0.3, and 1 mg/kg) or scopolamine (0.01, 0.03, and 0.1 mg/kg) was systemically administered, [(11)C]SCH23390 binding to D(1) receptors was not affected. With administration of methamphetamine, the striatal PDE-IV activity, as measured with R-[(11)C]rolipram (active form) and S-[(11)C]rolipram (inactive form), was dose-dependently facilitated with enhanced dopamine level in the striatal ECF. Administration of scopolamine also induced facilitated PDE-IV activity without any apparent changes in the ECF dopamine. These facilitations of PDE-IV activity were abolished by preadministration of SCH23390, but not by raclopride. These results demonstrate that, as evaluated by PDE-IV activity, the inhibition of muscarinic cholinergic receptors actually facilitated dopamine neuronal signal transduction through D(1) receptors, as observed previously on D(2) receptors with no apparent increase in the striatal ECF dopamine level, but the enhanced dopamine transmission could not detected by [(11)C]SCH23390.

Abstract
Age-related changes in the serotonin 5-HT(1A) receptors in the living brains of conscious young (5.9 +/- 1.8 years old) and aged (19.0 +/- 3.3 years old) monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were evaluated by [carbonyl-(11)C]WAY-100635 and high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET). The regional distribution pattern of [carbonyl-(11)C]WAY-100635 at 60-91 min postinjection was the highest in the cingulate gyrus and hippocampus, high in the frontal and temporal cortices, lower in the occipital cortex, striatum, thalamus, and raphe nuclei, and lowest in the cerebellum in both young and aged monkeys. Graphical Logan plot analysis with metabolite-corrected plasma radioactivity as an input function into the brain was applied to evaluate 5-HT(1A) receptor binding in vivo. Significant age-related decreases in 5-HT(1A) receptor binding were observed only in the frontal and temporal cortices. In the hippocampus, although 5-HT(1A) receptor binding indicated no significant age-related changes, it showed an inverse correlation with individual cortisol levels in plasma. When the 5-HT(1A) receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT was administered intravenously at a dose of 0.1, 0.3, or 1 mg/kg 30 min after tracer injection, binding of [carbonyl-(11)C]WAY-100635 was displaced in both age groups in a dose-dependent manner. However, the degree of displacement was more marked in young than in aged monkeys. These observations demonstrated the usefulness of [carbonyl-(11)C]WAY-100635 as an indicator of the age-related changes in cortical 5-HT(1A) receptors measured noninvasively by PET. In addition, these observations suggested that the age-related impairment of 5-HT(1A) receptor responses to 8-OH-DPAT might be related to the reduced efficacy of antidepressant therapy in elderly patients with depression.

Abstract
The effects of ketamine anesthesia on the binding of [(11)C]-labeled cocaine analogs, [(11)C]beta-CFT (2beta-carbomethoxy-3beta-(4-fluorophenyl)tropane) and [(11)C]beta-CIT-FE (N-(2-fluoroethyl)-2beta-carbomethoxy-3beta-(4-iodophenyl)tropane), to the striatal dopamine transporter (DAT) were evaluated in the monkey brain using positron emission tomography (PET). We sequentially measured the kinetics of these labeled compounds in the brains of five young-adult male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) in the conscious state, followed by those under ketamine anesthesia with continuous infusion (3 and 10 mg/kg/h). After intravenous injection, [(11)C]beta-CFT and [(11)C]beta-CIT-FE were predominantly accumulated in the striatum in both conscious and ketamine-anesthetized states. In the conscious state, the striatal uptake of [(11)C]beta-CFT and [(11)C]beta-CIT-FE continuously increased with time up to 91 min after injection. Continuous infusion of ketamine-induced higher levels of uptake of [(11)C]beta-CFT and [(11)C]beta-CIT-FE into the brain in a dose-dependent manner as compared with conscious state, and kinetic analysis with metabolite-corrected arterial input function indicated that the binding potentials (BP = k(3)/k(4)) of both compounds were elevated by ketamine. Not only [(11)C]beta-CIT-FE but also [(11)C]beta-CFT reached the equilibrium state of specific binding in the striatum within 40-50 min after injection. The present results demonstrated that ketamine significantly alters the DAT availability as measured with [(11)C]beta-CFT and [(11)C]beta-CIT-FE in the brain.

Abstract
The effects of changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) with aging on muscarinic cholinergic receptor binding were evaluated with [15O]H(2)O and N-[11C]methyl-4-piperidyl benzilate (4-MPB) in the living brains of young (5.9+/-1.8 years old) and aged (19.0+/-3.3 years old) monkeys (Macaca mulatta) in the conscious state using high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET). For quantitative analysis of receptor binding in vivo with [11C]4-MPB, metabolite-corrected arterial plasma radioactivity curves were obtained as an input function into the brain, and graphical Patlak plot analysis was applied. In addition, two-compartment model analysis using the radioactivity curve in the cerebellum as an input function (reference analysis) was also applied to determine the distribution volume (DV=K(1)/k(2)') for [11C]4-MPB. With metabolite-corrected arterial input, Patlak plot analysis of [11C]4-MPB indicated a regionally specific decrease in muscarinic cholinergic receptor binding in vivo in the frontal and temporal cortices as well as the striatum in aged compared with young animals, showing no correlation with the degree of reduced rCBF. In contrast, on the reference analysis with cerebellar input of [11C]4-MPB, all regions assayed except the pons showed a significant age-related decrease of DV, and the degree of reduction of DV was correlated with that of rCBF. These results demonstrated the usefulness of kinetic analysis of [11C]4-MPB with metabolite-corrected arterial input, not with reference region's input, as an indicator of the aging process of cortical muscarinic cholinergic receptors in vivo measured by PET with less blood flow dependency.

Abstract
Age-related changes in muscarinic cholinergic receptors were evaluated with the novel ligand (+)N-[(11)C]methyl-3-piperidyl benzilate ((+)3-MPB) in the living brains of young (5.9 +/- 1.8 years old) and aged (19.0 +/- 3.3 years old) monkeys (Macaca mulatta) in the conscious state using high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET). For quantitative analysis of receptor binding in vivo, metabolite-corrected arterial plasma radioactivity curves were obtained as an input function into the brain, and kinetic analyses using the three-compartment model and graphical Logan plot analysis were applied. Kinetic analyses of [(11)C](+)3-MPB indicated a regionally specific decrease in the receptor binding in vivo determined as binding potential (BP) = k(3)/k(4) in aged animals compared with young animals. Thus, the frontal and temporal cortices as well as the striatum showed age-related reduction of muscarinic cholinergic receptors in vivo, reflecting the reduced receptor density (B(max)) determined by Scatchard plot analysis in vivo. In the hippocampus, although BP of [(11)C](+)3-MPB indicated no significant age-related changes, it showed an inverse correlation with individual cortisol levels in plasma. When the graphical Logan plot analysis was applied, all regions assayed showed significant age-related decrease of [(11)C](+)3-MPB binding. These results demonstrate the usefulness of kinetic three-compartment model analysis of [(11)C](+)3-MPB with metabolite-corrected arterial plasma input as an indicator for the aging process of the cortical muscarinic cholinergic receptors in vivo as measured by PET.

Abstract
The cholecystokinin gene (CCK) is thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of both panic disorder and schizophrenia. In this study, we have extended the 5'-upstream sequence of the CCK gene, and identified a compound short tandem repeat (STR), located approximately -2.2 to -1.8 kb from the cap site. This STR was found to be polymorphic with ten different allele lengths. Case-control studies using 73 panic patients, 305 schizophrenics and 252 controls showed a significant allelic association with panic disorder (P = 0.025), but not with schizophrenia. Dividing the STR alleles into three classes according to length, Long (L), Medium (M) and Short (S), produced strong genotypic (MM) (nominal P = 0.0014) and allelic (M) (nominal P = 0.0079) associations with panic disorder. screening the newly extended promoter region detected not only the previously identified -36c>t and -188a>g single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) but a new rare snp, -345g>C. Neither of the former two SNPs showed significant association with either panic disorder or schizophrenia. Haplotypic distributions of the STR and SNPs -188 and -36 were significantly different between panic samples and controls (P = 0.0003). These findings suggest that the novel STR or a nearby variant may confer susceptibility to the development of panic disorder.

Abstract
We developed PET ligands (+)N-[(11)C]ethyl-3-piperidyl benzilate ([(11)C](+)3-EPB) and (+)N-[(11)C]propyl-3-piperidyl benzilate ([(11)C](+)3-PPB) for cerebral muscarinic cholinergic receptors. The distribution and kinetics of the novel ligands were evaluated for comparison with the previously reported ligand (+)N-[(11)C]methyl-3-piperidyl benzilate ([(11)C](+)3-MPB) in the monkey brain (Macaca mulatta) in the conscious state using high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET). At 60-91 min postinjection, regional distribution patterns of these three ligands were almost identical, and were consistent with the muscarinic receptor density in the brain as previously reported in vitro. However, the time-activity curves of [(11)C](+)3-EPB and [(11)C](+)3-PPB showed earlier peak times of radioactivity and a faster clearance rate than [(11)C](+)3-MPB in cortical regions rich in the receptors. Kinetic analysis using the three-compartment model with time-activity curves of radioactivity in metabolite-corrected arterial plasma as input functions revealed that labeling with longer [(11)C]alkyl chain length induced lower binding potential (BP = k(3)/k(4)), consistent with the rank order of affinity of these ligands obtained by an in vitro assay using rat brain slices and [(3)H]QNB. The cholinesterase inhibitor Aricept administered at doses of 50 and 250 microg/kg increased acetylcholine level in extracellular fluid of the frontal cortex and the binding of [(11)C](+)3-PPB with the lowest affinity to the receptors was displaced by the endogenous acetylcholine induced by cholinesterase inhibition, while [(11)C](+)3-MPB with the highest affinity was not significantly affected. Taken together, these observations indicate that the increase in [(11)C]alkyl chain length could alter the kinetic properties of conventional receptor ligands for PET by reducing the affinity to receptors, which might make it possible to assess the interaction between endogenous neurotransmitters and ligand-receptor binding in vivo as measured by PET.

Abstract
We clinically analyzed 83 patients with community-acquired pneumonia caused by a mixed infection of polymicrobial agents who we have treated during the past 15 years. A comparative study among three groups; an infectious group with polymicrobial agents (83 cases), an infectious group with monomicrobial agents (335 cases), and an infectious group with unknown agents (599 cases) was performed. The results were as follows; (1) The highest percentage of patients were elderly and bedridden. (2) Striking atypical pneumonic symptoms, including dyspnea, consciousness disturbance, gastrointestinal symptoms and hypotension (shock) were present. (3) Laboratory findings of poor nutritional conditions, including decreases in serum protein, albumin, and cholineesterase, and hypoxia remarkably increased. (4) The prognosis was poor because the mortality rate (15.7%) was higher. (5) There were two polymicrobial agents for 75 patients and three agents for 8 patients. The coupling of polymicrobial agents was most frequent in five patients with Haemophilus influenzae + MSSA and five with H. influenzae + respiratory virus. These results suggest that the patients with community-acquired pneumonia caused by a mixed infection of polymicrobial agents had clinical features and causative microorganisms resembling those of elderly patients with community-acquired pneumonia. We recommended that treatment with antibiotics for them was adequate if the treatment resemble that of elderly patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Now that marathon racing is growing in popularity, many thousands of enthusiastic athletes are participating in various ultramarathons all over the world each year. However, it remains controversial whether such a sport contributes to the promotion of health. The occurrence of transient cardiac dysfunction and irreversible myocardial injury has been reported in association with such exercise in healthy individuals. Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a cardiac hormone, as is atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), and its measurement has been widely used for clinical evaluation of cardiac dysfunction. However, little is known about the response of plasma BNP to prolonged strenuous exercise. We hypothesized that confirmation of minimal cardiac dysfunction or myocardial injury may be made by measurements of plasma BNP. METHODS Levels of plasma ANP, BNP, catecholamines, blood lactate, and serum cardiac troponin T (cTnT) were determined before and after a 100-km ultramarathon in 10 healthy men to examine the effects of the exercise on levels of ANP and BNP and correlations between the natriuretic peptides and cTnT as a marker for myocardial damage. RESULTS Whereas all variables significantly increased after the race, increased levels of ANP and BNP were most strongly correlated with increases in cTnT levels. The cTnT level after the race was greater than the upper reference limit in 9 of 10 men. CONCLUSIONS Such exercise significantly increased ANP and BNP levels in healthy men, and the increases could be partially attributed to myocardial damage during the race.

Abstract
N-Glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc), precious sialic acid which could not be synthesized by a chemical method, occurrs in the body of holothuroidea, Gumi Cucumaria echinata. Gumi contains 85% of total sialic acid, as Neu5Gc, in the body. Neu5Gc was purified from dry powder of the body using Dowex 1-x8 (HCOO* form) anion exchange chromatography after mild acid hydrolysis with 0.1 N trifluoroacetic acid. Using GC-MS and 1H-NMR spectroscopy, the purified Neu5Gc was correctly identified to be Neu5Gc. The purity of Neu5Gc was more than 99%. This is the first report of purification and identification of Neu5Gc from holothuroidea by using anion exchange chromatography, GC-MS, and 1H-NMR.

Abstract
We classified 1017 patients with community-acquired pneumonia requiring hospitalization experienced in Kawasaki Medical School Kawasaki Hospital during the past 15 years into five age groups (< or = 54 years old, 55-64 years old, 65-74 years old, 75-84 years old, > or = 85 years old). With particular emphasis on the elderly patients, we then compared the clinical and microbiological findings in the five groups. The results were as follows; (1) Half of patients in the over 85 years old group were bed-ridden. (2) The proportion receiving antibiotics before hospitalization decreased with age. (3) There were striking atypical pneumonic symptoms, such as dyspnea and consciousness disturbance in the two age groups over 75 years old. (4) Hypotension (shock) increased with age. (5) Markers of nutritional conditions, such as serum protein, albumin, cholinesterase, and hypoxia remarkably increased in the two age groups over 75 years old. (6) There were no significant differences in the isolation rate of etiological microorganisms. (7) The number of polymicrobial agents in the < or = 54 years old group was lower than that in the other age groups. (8) Mycoplasma pneumoniae was most significantly higher in < or = 54 years old group, Haemophilus influenzae in patients 55-64 years old, and Streptococcus pneumoniae in both 65-74 and 75-84 years old groups. (9) The isolation rate of MSSA, gram-negative bacilli such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respiratory viruses increased with age. (10) The amount of sepsis increased with age. (11) The prognosis was poor in the two groups over 75 years old because the mortality rate (over 10%) was higher that for the other age groups.

Abstract
The novel muscarinic cholinergic ligands (+)N-[11C]methyl-3-piperidyl benzilate ([11C](+)3-MPB) and its stereoisomer [11C](-)3-MPB were evaluated in comparison with [11C]4-MPB in the brains of conscious monkeys (Macaca mulatta) using high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET). The regional distribution patterns of [11C](+)3-MPB and [11C]4-MPB at 60-91 min postinjection were almost identical: highest in the striatum and occipital cortex; intermediate in the temporal and frontal cortices, cingulate gyrus, hippocampus, and thalamus; lower in the pons; and lowest in the cerebellum. The uptake of [11C](+)3-MPB in all regions was higher and the dynamic range of regional uptake differences of [11C](+)3-MPB was better than those of [11C]4-MPB. The levels of [11C](-)3-MPB were much lower in all regions of the brain than [11C](+)3-MPB and [11C]4-MPB. Administration of scopolamine, a muscarinic cholinergic antagonist, at a dose of 50 microg/kg reduced the radioactivity of [11C](+)3-MPB and [11C]4-MPB in all regions except the cerebellum. Time-activity curves of [11C](+)3-MPB peaked in all regions, while those of [11C]4-MPB showed gradual increases with time in all regions except the thalamus, pons, and cerebellum. Two graphical analyses (Logan plot and Patlak plot) with plasma radioactivity as an input function into the brain were applied to evaluate receptor binding in vivo. [11C](+)3-MPB showed linear regression curves on Logan plot analysis and nonlinear curves on Patlak plot in all regions, suggesting that [11C](+)3-MPB bound reversibly to the muscarinic receptors. The in vivo binding parameters as well as uptake at 60-91 min postinjection of [11C](+)3-MPB were consistent with muscarinic receptor density in the brain as reported in vitro.

Abstract
2'-C-cyano-2'-deoxy-1-beta-D-arabino-pentofuranosylcytosine (CNDAC) is a potent anti-cancer agent, and we previously observed that liposomal formulation of 5'-O-dipalmitoylphosphatidyl derivative of CNDAC (DPP-CNDAC) is desirable for targeting. For targeting to pulmonary cancer, we investigated the in vivo behavior of liposomes containing DPP-CNDAC by a non-invasive method using positron emission tomography. Liposomes composed of DPP-CNDAC and cholesterol (DPP-CNDAC/CH liposomes) were markedly accumulated in mice lung bearing B16BL6 melanoma. In metastatic pulmonary cancer model, DPP-CNDAC/CH liposomes significantly reduced the lung colonization in a dose-dependent manner. The activity was significantly superior to conventional liposomal formulation or soluble CNDAC. These results suggest that DPP-CNDAC/CH liposomes are useful for metastatic pulmonary cancer.

Abstract
We experienced 142 cases with community-acquired pneumonia between April 1998 and March 2000. By measuring the titers of respiratory viruses for these cases, we were able to identify acute phase infections of influenza A virus in 10 cases and RS virus in 6 cases and determined that there was an increase in community-acquired pneumonia during both winter seasons. Thereafter we compared the clinical features of community-acquired pneumonia with regard to these two types of virus infection by dividing the patients into two groups, both of which frequently included in the elderly. In the influenza virus group, such general symptoms as high fever, headache and general fatigue were dominant. Common bacteria were isolated in nine cases with mixed infection; four of them with Streptococcus pneumoniae. In the RS virus group, there were fewer general symptoms and common bacteria were isolated in four cases with mixed infection; three with Haemophilus influenzae. The severity of the illness was greater in the Influenza virus group; i.e.) three cases required mechanical ventilation and two of these three cases died. In the RS virus group, on the other hand, the prognosis was good because no mechanical ventilation was required and there were no deaths. Influenza vaccination is especially important for the elderly, because the epidemiology of the influenza virus groups showed none had a history of influenza vaccination in this study.

Abstract
We studied interaction of CEL-III with cultured human leukemic cell lines and lymphocytes from normal adults by evaluating the extent of cytotoxicity and cytoagglutination. Among acute T lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) cell lines, CEL-III displayed increased toxicity against different acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cell lines as a function of increasing differentiation stage. In the case of acute B lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) cell lines, CEL-III showed strong cytotoxicity against relatively immature cell lines. We found that CEL-III was more toxic for ALL cell lines than leukocytes obtained from peripheral blood of healthy adults. Strong influence of the additional amount of calcium ion on the extent of cytotoxicity was observed. In addition, we describe a new way to evaluate the extent of cytoagglutination in "% of agglutinated cells". These findings make CEL-III a promising candidate in research for lectins which bind to and destroy only the targeted leukemic cells.

Abstract
Age-related alterations of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) type 2A receptors (5-HT(2A)) in the living brains of young (6.0+/-1. 3 years old) and aged (19.2+/-3.0 years old) monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were evaluated with [11C]MDL100,907 in the conscious state using high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET). For quantitative analysis of 5-HT(2A) binding in vivo, PET scan of [11C]MDL100,907 was performed with arterial blood sampling in each animal, and the metabolic-corrected arterial input function was used for Logan graphical analysis. Higher cerebral binding of [11C]MDL100, 907 was observed in the hippocampus, cingulate gyrus, frontal, temporal and occipital cortices, regions known to contain high densities of 5-HT(2A), by in vitro assay. Binding was intermediate in the striatum and thalamus, and lower in the pons and cerebellum in both young and aged monkeys. The age-related decrease in [11C]MDL100,907 binding to 5-HT(2A) receptors was prominent in the hippocampus, cingulate gyrus, frontal, temporal and occipital cortices, but not in the striatum, thalamus and pons. These observation demonstrated the usefulness of [11C]MDL100,907 as an labeled compound for assessment of the aging process of the cortical 5-HT(2A) measured by PET.

Abstract
To investigate what viruses are related to acute bacterial respiratory tract infections, we prospectively evaluated 113 cases with respiratory tract infections (always accompanying by purulent sputum) experienced between July 1998 and March 2000. Acute viral infections were detected in 25 cases (22%); 10 cases of influenza A virus and 6 cases of respiratory syncytial (RS) virus. The epidemiology of the influenza A virus and RS virus was mainly identified as from December to February in both winter seasons. A bacteriological examination of sputum cultures isolated 12 cases of Streptococcus pneumoniae and 10 cases of Haemophilus influenzae during the same periods and mixed infections of both viruses and bacteria were recognised in 16 cases (14%). These results suggest a significantly high percentage of mixed infections of both viruses and bacteria. However, it was unknown whether the patients with acute bacterial respiratory infections had been infected with viruses prior to the bacterial infections. The frequency of appearance of respiratory tract infections tended to increase with the seasonale epidemiology of viral infections.

Abstract
Three major serine proteinase inhibitors (SBI-1, -2, and -3) were purified from the seeds of white sword bean (Canavalia gladiata) by FPLC and reversed-phase HPLC. The sequences of these inhibitors were established by automatic Edman degradation and TOF-mass spectrometry. SBI-1, -2, and -3 consisted of 72, 73, and 75 amino acid residues, with molecular masses of 7806.5, 7919.8, and 8163.4, respectively. The sequences of SBI-1 and -2 coincided with those of CLT I and II [Terada et al. (1994) Biosci. Biotech. Biochem., 58, 376-379] except only N- or C-terminal amino acid residues. Analysis of the amino acid sequences showed that the active sites of the inhibitors contained a Lys21-Ser22 against trypsin and Leu48-Ser49 against chymotrypsin, respectively. Further, it became apparent that about seven disulfide bonds were present. These results suggest that sword bean inhibitors are members of the Bowman-Birk proteinase inhibitor family.

Abstract
To evaluate the cholinergic and dopaminergic neuronal interaction in the striatum, the effects of scopolamine, a muscarinic cholinergic antagonist, on the striatal dopaminergic system were evaluated multi-parametrically in the conscious monkey brain using high-resolution positron emission tomography in combination with microdialysis. l-3,4-Dihydroxyphenylalanine (l-[beta-(11)C]DOPA) and 2beta-carbomethoxy-3beta-(4-fluorophenyl)tropane ([beta-(11)C]CFT) were used to measure dopamine synthesis rate and dopamine transporter (DAT) availability, respectively. For assessment of dopamine D(2) receptor binding in vivo, [(11)C]raclopride was applied because this labeled compound, which has relatively low affinity to dopamine D(2) receptors, was hypothesized to be sensitive to the striatal synaptic dopamine concentration. Systemic administration of scopolamine at doses of 10 and 100 microg/kg dose-dependently increased both dopamine synthesis and DAT availability as measured by l-[beta-(11)C]DOPA and [beta-(11)C]CFT, respectively. Scopolamine decreased the binding of [(11)C]raclopride in a dose-dependent manner. Scopolamine induced no significant changes in dopamine concentration in the striatal extracellular fluid (ECF) as determined by microdialysis. However, scopolamine dose-dependently facilitated the striatal ECF dopamine induced by the DAT inhibitor GBR12909 at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg. Scatchard plot analysis in vivo of [(11)C]raclopride revealed that scopolamine reduced the apparent affinity of dopamine D(2) receptors. These results suggested that the inhibition of muscarinic cholinergic neuronal activity modulates dopamine turnover in the striatum by simultaneous enhancement of the dynamics of dopamine synthesis and DAT availability, resulting in no significant changes in apparent "static" ECF dopamine level but showing a decrease in [(11)C]raclopride binding in vivo attributable to the reduction of affinity of dopamine D(2) receptors.

Abstract
The effects of ketamine, a noncompetitive antagonist of NMDA receptors, on the striatal dopaminergic system were evaluated multiparametrically in the monkey brain using high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET) in combination with microdialysis. L-[beta-(11)C]DOPA, [(11)C]raclopride, and [(11)C]beta-CFT were used to evaluate dopamine synthesis rate, D(2) receptor binding, and transporter availability, respectively, in conscious and ketamine-anesthetized animals. Dopamine concentrations in the striatal extracellular fluid (ECF) were simultaneously measured by PET. Thirty minutes prior to PET scan, intravenous administration of ketamine was started by continuous infusion at a rate of 3 or 10 mg/kg/h. Ketamine infusion dose-dependently decreased [(11)C]raclopride binding, but induced no significant changes in dopamine concentration in the striatal ECF as measured by microdialysis at any dose used. In contrast, ketamine increased both dopamine synthesis and DAT availability as measured by L-[beta-(11)C]DOPA and [(11)C]beta-CFT, respectively, in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that the inhibition of glutamatergic neuronal activity modulates dopamine turnover in the striatum by simultaneous enhancement of the dynamics of dopamine synthesis and DAT availability to the same extent, resulting in no apparent changes in ECF dopamine concentration as measured by microdialysis. It also suggests that the alteration of [(11)C]raclopride binding in vivo as measured by PET might not simply be modulated by the static synaptic concentration of dopamine.

Abstract
To clarify the characteristic features of nursing home-acquired pneumonia in our community hospital, we performed a clinical analysis of 86 patients with nursing home-acquired pneumonia. The patients were divided into young and elderly groups. In the young group cerebral palsy was the underlying disease. In the elderly group, it was cerebrovascular attack. Although there were no differences in ADL, the nutritional condition of the young group was comparatively good, the isolated microorganism consisted of mostly Mycoplasma pneumoniae and the prognosis was good. The elderly group where the nutritional condition was poor, the patients were detected by non-respiratory symptoms and risk factors such as obvious episodes of aspiration led us to be concerned about the risk factors for nursing home-acquired pneumonia. The microorganism isolated from the sputum of the elderly group was frequently a multi-drug resistant microorganism such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and polymicrobial infection. Their prognosis was poor despite treatment with multiple antibiotics. In the comparative study between survivors and non-survivors in the elderly group, risk factors such as hypotension, consciousness disturbance, the extension of infiltration shadows, respiratory failure, multiple organ failure and metabolic acidosis were influenced for the prognosis, but the isolated microorganisms and the antimicrobial agents were not concerned.

Abstract
The dose-response and duration effects of acute administration of the dopamine transporter (DAT) blocker cocaine and GBR12909 on dopamine synthesis and transporter availability were evaluated in the brains of conscious monkeys using high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET) in combination with microdialysis. Rate of dopamine synthesis and DAT availability were evaluated using L-[beta-11C]DOPA and [11C]beta-CFT (WIN35,428), respectively. Administration of cocaine (0.5, 2 and 5 mg/kg) resulted in dose-dependent elevation of dopamine level in the striatal extracellular fluid (ECF) at 0.5 h after injection, and returned to the baseline level within 1.5 h post-injection. At 0.5 post-injection, cocaine reduced dopamine synthesis rate and DAT availability in a dose-dependent manner. The reduction of DAT availability by cocaine (2 mg/kg) returned to baseline level at 3 h post-injection and thereafter. Interestingly, dopamine synthesis rate was significantly higher at 3 h than baseline level and returned to baseline level 5.5 h post-injection. When GBR12909 (0.5, 2 and 5 mg/kg) was administered 0.5 h before tracer injection, dopamine synthesis rate and DAT availability were significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner. These reductions induced by GBR12909 (2 mg/kg) lasted at least until 5.5 h post-injection. GBR12909 induced dose-dependent elevation of dopamine level in ECF, and the elevation lasted up to 7 h. The present results indicated that cocaine and GBR12909 affect dopamine synthesis rate and DAT availability in the striatum with difference time courses as measured by PET in the conscious monkey brains.

Abstract
A 26-year-old female was admitted because of multiple fractures in lower extremities. While in the hospital, she developed a high fever and generalized skin eruption. Physical examination revealed bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy and mild hepatosplenomegaly. The white cell count was 11,200 with 11% atypical lymphocytes. Serum GOT, GPT, LDH were markedly elevated. Infectious mononucleosis was suspected, but the serological test for EB virus did not show evidence of acute EB virus infection. Anti-HSV, CMV, hepatitis A virus antibody titers also did not show significant change during the coarse. The serological test for HHV-6 only showed increased titer of IgM and IgG antibodies. Rapidly elevated IgG antibody titer was indicative of reactivation of HHV-6. So, she was diagnosed as mononucleosis-like syndrome caused by HHV-6, probably reactivated infection. Her symptoms gradually disappeared during a month.

Abstract
The wheat gene WPK4 encodes a 56-kDa protein kinase that belongs to group 3 of the SNF1-related protein kinase family (SnRK3), and is up-regulated by light and cytokinins and down-regulated by sucrose. In order to determine whether or not this particular regulation pattern is general among plant species, we isolated and characterized homologous genes from rice and maize. Two rice genes, OsPK4 and OsPK7, encode proteins comprising 508 and 520 amino acids, and show, respectively, 75% and 76% sequence similarity to WPK4. OsPK4 and OsPK7 proteins produced in Escherichia coli were able to phosphorylate themselves and myelin basic proteins, the reaction requiring magnesium and/or manganese ions. Transcripts of OsPK4 were detected in all tissues tested, and amounts were increased upon illumination, nutrient deprivation and treatment with cytokinins. In contrast, transcripts of OsPK7 were not found in any tissues except in mature leaves at low levels, and did not accumulate under any of the stress conditions examined. A maize gene, ZmPK4, encodes a protein with 518 amino acids that shows 74% similarity to WPK4. Its transcripts were constitutively expressed in all tissues, regardless of light, nutrient and cytokinin status, but were increased upon exposure to low temperature. These results indicate that, despite the sequence similarity between their products, genes for SnRK3 proteins are differentially regulated in response to environmental stimuli.
