[Analysis of clinical epidemiological characteristics of respiratory syncytial virus in children in a hospital of pediatric in Hubei Province from 2020 to 2023]

Objective: To explore the clinical epidemiological characteristics of respiratory syncytial virus in children in Hubei Province from 2020 to 2023. Method: A single-center and cross-sectional study was used to analyze the clinical data of 3 271 children with respiratory syncytial virus infection in Wuhan Children's Hospital affiliated to Huazhong University of Science and Technology from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2023. Nonparametric rank sum test and χ2 test were used for comparative analysis. Results: From July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2023, a total of 25 583 children were included in the analysis, of which 3 271(12.8%) children infected RSV. The detection rate was 16.3% in 2020-2021, 14.7% in 2021-2022 and 9.1% in 2022-2023. The detection rate decreased year by year (χ2=222.054, P<0.05). From 2020 to 2023, there was an anti-seasonal epidemic of RSV in spring and autumn. The detection rate of RSV in infants under 1 year old was the highest, but the median ages of RSV positive children increased (H=140.575, P<0.05). Pneumonia was the main clinical manifestation of RSV respiratory tract infection. Conclusion: The epidemiological characteristics of RSV in children in Hubei Province were different from those before. From 2020 to 2023, the detection rate of RSV decreased year by year. Besides winter, the prevalence of RSV could also be seen in spring and autumn. The median age of children infected with RSV increased after the epidemic. Pneumonia was the main clinical manifestation after RSV infection.

[Environmental influences on food allergy]

Food allergy is an abnormal immune response triggered by food allergens, resulting in symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, gastroesophageal reflux, pruritus, dyspnea, and in severe cases, anaphylactic shock and mortality. The prevalence of food allergy varies within the population, with a significantly higher incidence observed among children compared to adults. This escalating trend in pediatric food allergy has emerged as a prominent concern jeopardizing children's well-being, thus prompting extensive investigations within the realm of global public health. Over the past three decades, there has been a progressive increase in the global prevalence of food allergy, accompanied by a heightened severity of allergic manifestations. Environmental factors have been identified as crucial determinants in this escalating phenomenon. Extensive research has demonstrated the pivotal role played by the environment in both the onset and progression of food allergies. The present article aims to consolidate the effects of diverse environmental factors on food allergy, elucidating their underlying mechanisms. Emphasis is placed on delineating the impact of distinct environmental factors on food allergy, thereby furnishing valuable insights for comprehending the risk factors associated with this condition. Furthermore, this comprehensive analysis contributes to the advancement of scientific strategies for the prevention and management of food allergy, promoting the development and advancement of preventive medicine.

[Long-term outcome of EVAHEART I implantable ventricular assist device for the treatment of end stage heart failure: clinical 3-year follow-up results of 15 cases]

Objective: To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of the implantable ventricular assist system EVAHEART I in clinical use. Methods: Fifteen consecutive patients with end-stage heart failure who received left ventricular assist device therapy in Fuwai Hospital from January 2018 to December 2021 were enrolled in this study, their clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. Cardiac function, liver and kidney function, New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification, 6-minute walk distance and quality of life were evaluated before implantation and at 1, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months after device implantation. Drive cable infection, hemolysis, cerebrovascular events, mechanical failure, abnormally high-power consumption and abnormal pump flow were recorded during follow up. Results: All 15 patients were male, mean average age was (43.0±7.5) years, including 11 cases of dilated cardiomyopathy, 2 cases of ischemic cardiomyopathy, and 2 cases of valvular heart disease. All patients were hemodynamically stable on more than one intravenous vasoactive drugs, and 3 patients were supported by preoperative intra aortic balloon pump (IABP). Compared with before device implantation, left ventricular end-diastolic dimension (LVEDD) was significantly decreased ((80.93±6.69) mm vs. (63.73±6.31) mm, P<0.05), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), total bilirubin and creatinine were also significantly decreased ((3 544.85±1 723.77) ng/L vs. (770.80±406.39) ng/L; (21.28±10.51) μmol/L vs. (17.39±7.68) μmol/L; (95.82±34.88) μmol/L vs. (77.32±43.81) μmol/L; P<0.05) at 1 week after device implantation. All patients in this group were in NYHA class Ⅳ before implantation, and 9 patients could recover to NYHA class Ⅲ, 3 to class Ⅱ, and 3 to class Ⅰ at 1 month after operation. All patients recovered to class Ⅰ-Ⅱ at 6 months after operation. The 6-minute walk distance, total quality of life and visual analogue scale were significantly increased and improved at 1 month after implantation compared with those before operation (P<0.05). All patients were implanted with EVAHEART I at speeds between 1 700-1 950 rpm, flow rates between 3.2-4.5 L/min, power consumption of 3-9 W. The 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year survival rates were 100%, 87%, and 80%, respectively. Three patients died of multiple organ failure at 412, 610, and 872 d after surgery, respectively. During long-term device carrying, 3 patients developed drive cable infection on 170, 220, and 475 d after surgery, respectively, and were cured by dressing change. One patient underwent heart transplantation at 155 d after surgery due to bacteremia. Three patients developed transient ischemic attack and 1 patient developed hemorrhagic stroke events, all cured without sequelae. Conclusion: EVAHEART I implantable left heart assist system can effectively treat critically ill patients with end-stage heart failure, can be carried for long-term life and significantly improve the survival rate, with clear clinical efficacy.

[Effects of ZnO nanoparticles on proliferation and apoptosis of human lung epithelial BEAS-2B cells]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effects of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on proliferation and apoptosis of human lung epithelial cells BEAS-2B and its molecular mechanisms.

METHODS

BEAS-2B cells were treated with ZnO NPs at concentrations of 3, 6 and 12 μg/ml for 12 h and 24 h, the control group was not treated with ZnO NPs, each with 3 replicate wells. Cell viability was detected by CCK-8 method, and the half lethal concentration (IC₅₀) was analyzed. Then, the BEAS-2B cells were treated with ZnO NPs at selected concentrations of 3 and 6 μg/ml for 24 h respectively,each group was set with 3 replicate. Cell morphology was observed under inverted microscope. The morphology of cell nuclei was observed by Hochest33342 staining. The morphology of apoptosis was observed by AO staining and scanning electron microscopy. Cell cycle progression, cell apoptosis rate and the level of reactive oxygen species(ROS)were detected by flow cytometry. Western blot was used to detect the expression levels of Bcl-2 and Bax protein.

RESULTS

Compared with the control group, the cell viability of cells treated with ZnO NPs were decreased significantly(P＜0.01), and the IC₅₀ was 6.13 μg/ml at 24 h of drug treatment. After the cells were treated with ZnO NPs for 24 h, the levels of ROS were increased significantly(P＜0.05, P＜0.01)in 3 μg/ml, 6 μg/ml groups. The cell cycle was arrested at G2/M phase, chromatin condensation and apoptotic bodies were induced, apoptosis rate was increased significantly(P＜0.01) in 6 μg/ml group. The expression of Bcl-2 was decreased(P＜0.05), and the expression of Bax was increased (P＜0.05) in cells treated with 6 μg/ml ZnO NPs for 24 h.

CONCLUSION

ZnO NPs induced ROS accumulation, blocked progress of cell cycle and induced cell apoptosis in BEAS-2B cells.

Invasive pulmonary fungal infections in children with severe human adenovirus type 7 pneumonia: A retrospective study

BACKGROUND

There has been a rapid increase in the number of human adenovirus type 7 (HAdV-7) and invasive pulmonary fungal infections (IPFIs) co-infection.

METHODS

In this study, we included patients with confirmed HAdV-7 infection during the period from 2018 to 2019 to explore clinical characteristics of severe HAdV-7 pneumonia combined with IPFIs.

RESULTS

Among the 143 patients, 35 cases were co-infected with IPFIs. Others were assigned to the control group (n Z 108). Patients wereprone to be complicated with respiratory failure, heart failure and hemophagocytic syndromein IPFIs group. Thirty-one species of fungi were detected in the IPFIs group, among whichAspergillus was the most common species. Compared to control group, patients had lowerlevels of WBC, CD3þ T lymphocyte counts and CD19þ B lymphocyte counts in IPFIs group.

CONCLUSION

Aspergillus is the most common species in IPFIs combined with severe HAdV-7 pneumonia. For children with severe HAdV-7 pneumonia who are younger, have a long course of disease, and have been admitted to the ICU, we should predict the occurrence of IPFIs when there is multi-system dysfunction and the reduction of CD3+ T lymphocyte counts and CD19+ B lymphocyte counts in course of their disease.

Black blooms-induced adaptive responses of sulfate reduction bacteria in a shallow freshwater lake

Decomposing cyanobacterial bloom-induced black blooms been seen as an issue in the management of freshwater ecosystems, but its effect on sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in shallow freshwater lakes is not clear. The objective of this study is to present an in-depth investigation of black bloom effects on the activities and composition of SRB, as well as the interactions between SRB and other bacteria. Water and surface sediments samples were collected from a shallow freshwater lake during black and non-black blooms. Sulfate reduction rates (SRRs) in the water column were determined from the linear regression of sulfate depletion with time. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions (qPCRs), targeting the dsrA gene and Illumina sequencing of 16S rDNA, were used to estimate the SRB population and SRB community structures, respectively. Our data indicate that although a higher abundance of SRB was responsible for the higher SRR in the bottom water (34.09 ± 2.37 nmol mL^-1 day^-1) than in the surface water (14.57 ± 2.91 nmol mL^-1 day^-1) during black blooms, cell-specific sulfate reduction rates (csSRRs) in the distinct water layers were not significantly different (P = 0.95), with the value of approximately 0.017 fmol cell^-1 day^-1. Additionally, Desulfomicrobium and Desulfovibrio were the two main genera of SRB in the water column during black bloom season, while Desulfobulbus, Desulfobacca and Desulfatiglans genera were identified in the sediments of both the black and non-black blooms in genera pools. Each SRB genus preferentially associated with bacteria for specific functions in the bacterial co-occurrence network, regardless of whether black booms occurred or not. These results extend our knowledge on the importance of SRB during black blooms and the adaptation of SRB to environmental changes in freshwater lakes.

[Clinical observation of pre-suture ligation and suture knot positioning in single-operator circumcision with the stapler for children]

OBJECTIVE

To observe the clinical effects of pre-suture ligation and suture knot positioning in single-operator circumcision with the stapler.

METHODS

Totally 120 six to fourteen years old children with phimosis or redundant prepuce were equally and randomly assigned to receive traditional single-operator circumcision with the stapler (group 1), single-operator circumcision with double suture knots for positioning the cutting plane with the stapler (group 2), or pre-suture ligation plus single-operator suture knot positioning circumcision with the stapler (group 3). We recorded and comparatively analyzed the operation time, intraoperative blood loss and hematoma, the number of residual suture knots, the patients' satisfaction with foreskin reservation, sutured frenulum and incision aesthetics, and the rates of surgical conversion, severe postoperative dysuria, severe wound exudation and perioperative anxiety of the parents and surgeon.

RESULTS

Statistically significant differences were observed among the three groups in the operation time, intraoperative blood loss, incidence of intraoperative hematoma, number of residual suture knots, the patients' satisfaction with foreskin reservation, sutured frenulum and incision aesthetics, and the rates of surgical conversion, severe postoperative dysuria, severe wound exudation and perioperative anxiety of the parents and surgeon (P < 0.05). Compared with group 1, group 3 showed obviously less operation time and intraoperative blood loss and lower incidence of intraoperative hematoma, number of residual suture knots and rates of surgical conversion and perioperative anxiety of the parents and surgeons, and higher rates of patients' satisfaction with foreskin reservation, sutured frenulum and incision aesthetics. The intraoperative blood loss, incidence of intraoperative hematoma, and the rates of severe postoperative dysuria, severe wound exudation and perioperative anxiety of the parents and surgeon were lower in group 3 than in group 2.

CONCLUSION

Pre-suture ligation plus single-operator suture knot positioning circumcision with the stapler helps reduce the operation time, intraoperative blood loss, incidence of intraoperative hematoma, number of residual suture knots and rates of surgical conversion and perioperative anxiety of the parents and surgeon, and increase the patients' satisfaction with foreskin reservation, sutured frenulum and incision aesthetics.

Solution-Processed Organic Photodetectors with Renewable Materials

An organic photodetector prepared by a simple solution method based on renewable citrus pectin with an optimized concentration of aluminum nitrate (AlC05) is introduced herein. The effects of different concentrations of aluminum nitrate on the morphology and optical properties were investigated through various characterization methods. An AlC concentration of 0.5 mg/mL was found to provide the highest on/off ratio and acceptable rise and decay times. Also, the optimized device (Al/AlC0.5/ITO) exhibited good stability and repeatability at a 0.1 V bias under 440 nm visible light. Based on these results, citrus pectin materials were successfully used to fabricate an organic photodetector with a simple and cost-efficient fabrication process, while taking into account environmental commitments.

Experimental and Theoretical Study of Gamma Radiolysis and Dose Rate Effect of o-Cresol Formaldehyde Epoxy Composites

Gamma radiolysis behaviors and mechanisms of silica-filled o-cresol formaldehyde epoxy are studied at 2.20 × 10^-5 to 1.95 × 10^-1 Gy/s. The radiolysis-induced changes in chemical structures do not severely affect its thermostability. The slightly deteriorated mechanical strength at temperature exceeding 100 °C is accompanied by the declining glass transition temperature (from 185.9 to 172.2 °C) and enhanced damping ability. The gas yields of hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide manifest a remarkable dose rate effect. Based on the Schwarzschild law, their yields at an extremely low dose rate are accurately predicted by the established master curves. Besides, the latent radiolysis of gas products and postradiation effect are found with caution. The radiation-caused residual spin species are proved to be composed of silica defects and a phenoxy-type free radical with a tert-butyl group, according to the experimental results, theoretical calculations, and spectra simulations. The lower vertical ionization potential (7.6 eV) and adiabatic ionization potential (7.1 eV) are primarily due to the ionization of the benzene ring moiety with the tert-butyl group, which is likely to suffer from radiolysis. The calculated bond dissociation energy (260.8-563.5 kJ/mol) of the typical chemical bonds of epoxy is consistent with its radiolytic vulnerability and degradation mechanisms.

Regenerating gene IA predicts radiosensitivity and survival in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common malignancy in Southern China and Southeast Asia. Radiotherapy is the main treatment option. However, radiotherapy does not benefit all patients because there is no known precise biomarker that can be used for screening radioresistant patients. Genetic predisposition is closely related to tumor development, therapeutic response, and prognosis. The relationship between regenerating gene IA (REGIA) and NPC is unclear. This study aimed to retrospectively analyze the association between REGIA expression and metastasis, radiosensitivity, and survival in patients with NPC as well as assess the effect of radiation on REGIA expression in vitro. Immunohistochemical staining was used to detect REGIA. The relationship between REGIA expression in radioresistant NPC and the prognosis of CNE1 NPC cells were analyzed using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. We found that increased doses of radiation in CNE1 cells significantly decreased REGIA expression (P<0.05). The overall rate of REGIA-positive expression was 47.15% in NPC tissues and 45.00% and 61.02% in radiosensitive and radioresistant cases, respectively, showing significant differences (P<0.05). A REGIA-positive protein expression rate had a negative correlation with radiosensitivity in NPC (r= -0.109, P=0.047). Both REGIA-positive and REGIA-negative expression strongly predicted the overall survival rate and progression-free survival of NPC patients (P<0.01). A multivariate analysis indicated that REGIA was an inverse prognostic factor in NPC patients (REGIA-positive expression: hazard ratio (HR)=2.139, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.56-2.94, P<0.001 and REGIA-negative expression: HR=1.958, 95% CI=1.42-2.69, P<0.001). In conclusion: Radiation can affect REGIA expression. The REGIA expression level correlated with radioresistance and a poor prognosis. In addition, REGIA expression might act as a potential therapeutic target and prognostic predictor in NPC patients.

Gamma Radiation Chemistry of Polydimethylsiloxane Foam in Radiation-Thermal Environments: Experiments and Simulations

The γ radiolysis behavior of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in the radiation-thermal environments (dose rate, 0.2 Gy/s) is studied to pinpoint the basic knowledge of the temperature (20-70 °C) effects. The non-monotonous temperature effects on the formation of gas products, paramagnetic species in silica, and cross-linking density are proposed to correlate with the complex chemical reaction mechanisms. Besides, molecular dynamics simulation and theoretical calculation are first performed simultaneously based on the radical chemistry and intricate material composition, making it easier to comprehend and further harness the radiolysis mechanisms and structure deterioration of PDMS. The γ radiation-induced primary gas products and dominant cross-linking phenomena are reproduced by the molecular dynamics simulations with a reactive force field, and the reaction mechanisms and physicochemical interactions among PDMS chains, gas products, reactive radicals, and silica fillers are thoroughly studied at the atomic scale. The thermochemistry of the barrierless radical coupling reactions and reactions with explicit high-barrier transition states is calculated at the M06-2X theoretical level with the 6-311g(d, p) basis set. The barrierless reactions are all exothermal with the heat release of 321-618 kJ/mol, while the potential barriers for reactions with explicit transition states vary between 37 and 229 kJ/mol. The results show that γ radiation-induced radicals are crucial for the ensuing gas formation and cross-linking reactions, especially for the radical coupling reactions. The radical chemistry involved in the radiolytic PDMS is the key to understand and simulate its radiolysis behavior, according to the experimental and simulated results.

[Establishment and validation of prognosis predictive model using m6A RNA methylation regulators in children acute myeloid leukemia]

Objective: To figure out the association between the expression of m⁶A RNA methylation regulators and the prognosis of children AML, and provide genetic markers for monitoring the progression and recurrence of AML. Methods: Twenty two m⁶A RNA methylation regulators were firstly analyzed using the data from Therapeutically Applicable Research To Generate Effective Treatments(TARGET) database and The Genotype-Tissue Expression(GTEx) database, Wilcoxon rank test was performed to analyze the differentially expression of m⁶A RNA methylation regulators between the AML and normal tissue, 296 AML children were divided into training cohort and validation cohort by simple random sampling method, Lasso regression was used to screen out the risk factors and the multivariate Cox regression was applied for establishing prognosis predicting model in training cohort. Kaplan-Meier survival curve, time-dependent ROC curve and multivariate Cox regression were used to estimate the efficiency of risk score calculated by predictive model in validation cohort. Results: Twenty one m⁶A genes were up regulated in AML compared to Normal patients. Five m⁶A RNA methylation regulators(ZC3H13, YTHDC2, HNRNPA2B1, METTL3, METTL5) were included in final predicting model. Risk score could independently predict the survival of AML patients in training cohort(HR:2.72, 95%CI: 1.54-4.81, P=0.000 6) and validation cohort(HR:2.01, 95%CI:1.14-3.50, P=0.016). Low-risk patients had better prognoses than high-risk patients both in training cohort(P=0.001 9) and validation cohort(P=0.023). Conclusion: This prognosis predicting model constructed by m⁶A RNA methylation regulators could independently predict the survival prognosis in AML children, and should be helpful for clinical therapy.

[Effects of environmental factors on the distribution of suitable habitats of Ixodes ovatus in China]

OBJECTIVE

To identify the environmental factors affecting the distribution of suitable habitats of Ixodes ovatus, and to examine the effects of environmental changes on the distribution of suitable habitats of I. ovatus.

METHODS

Data pertaining to the distribution of I. ovatus in China were captured by literature review. The distribution of suitable habitats of I. ovatus in China was simulated using the maximum entropy model with the environmental variable data and the I. ovatus distribution data. In addition, the potential distribution of suitable habitats of I. ovatus was predicted based on the 2050 and 2070 environmental data.

RESULTS

The current suitable habitats of I. ovatus cover 3.11 million km², accounting for 32.28% of the total land area of China, and they are mainly concentrated in southwestern and northwestern China. Among the screened 16 environmental factors, the standard deviation of seasonal variation of temperature, average annual precipitation and altitude were predominant environmental factors affecting the distribution of suitable habitats of I. ovatus, and these three variables contributed 76.5% to the distribution of suitable habitats of I. ovatus in China. The suitable habitats of I. ovatus were predicted to showing a tendency towards expansion to northwestern and northeastern China in 2050 and 2070, and the proportion of highly suitable habitats of I. ovatus was predicted to increase.

CONCLUSIONS

Moderate climate, adequate precipitation and high altitude are favorable for the survival of I. ovatus. Future climate changes may cause expansion of suitable habitats of I. ovatus in China.

[Modified urethral reconstruction with lingual mucosa for complicated anterior urethral stricture]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the efficiency and complications of modified urethral reconstruction with lingual mucosa in the treatment of complicated anterior urethral stricture (CAUS).

METHODS

We retrospectively studied the clinical data on 10 cases of CAUS treated by modified urethral reconstruction with lingual mucosa from December 2017 to June 2019 concerning the age of the patients and the causes, location and length of urethral stricture. We statistically analyzed the pre- and post-operative maximum urine flow rate (Qmax), scores on Mental Status Scale in Non-psychiatric Settings (MSSNS) and quality of life (QOL) scores and observed post-operative complications such as abnormal taste, tongue numbness, urinary tract infection, urethral diverticulum, and urethral stricture.

RESULTS

Compared with the baseline, Qmax was significantly improved and the MSSNS and QOL scores dramatically decreased at 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery (P < 0.01). Paraurethral infection developed in 1 case postoperatively, which was cured after dressing change, external urethral orifice stenosis occurred in another, which was improved after regular urethral orifice expansion, and mild tongue numbness was found in 2 cases at 1 month but gradually restored to abnormal. Urethrography showed no urethral diverticulum before catheter removal.

CONCLUSIONS

Lingual mucosa is an ideal alternative material for urethral reconstruction in the treatment of CAUS, and lateral lingual mucosa can be easily obtained. Modified urethral reconstruction by embedding lingual mucosa in the dorsal base of the urethra, with the advantages of definite effectiveness and few postoperative complications, is worthy of clinical application.

[Consistency of peripheral whole blood and venous serum procalcitonin in children: a multicenter parallel controlled study]

Objective: To explore the consistency of peripheral whole blood and venous serum procalcitonin (PCT) levels, and the value of peripheral whole blood PCT in evaluating pediatric bacterial infection. Methods: This multicenter cross-sectional parallel control study was conducted in 11 children's hospital. All the 1 898 patients older than 28 days admitted to these hospitals from March 2018 to February 2019 had their peripheral whole blood and venous serum PCT detected simultaneously with unified equipment, reagent and method. According to the venous serum PCT level, the patients were stratified to subgroups. Analysis of variance and chi-square test were used to compare the demographic characteristics among groups. And the correlation between the peripheral blood and venous serum PCT level was investigated by quantitative Pearson correlation analysis.The PCT resultes were also converted into ranked data to further test the consistency between the two sampling methods by Spearman's rank correlation test. Furthermore, the ranked data were converted into binary data to evaluate the consistency and investigate the best cut-off of peripheral blood PCT level in predicting bacterial infection. Results: A total of 1 898 valid samples were included (1 098 males, 800 females),age 27.4(12.2,56.7) months. There was a good correlation between PCT values of peripheral whole blood and venous serum (r=0.97, P<0.01). The linear regression equation was PCT_{venous serum}=0.135+0.929×PCT_{peripheral whole blood}. However, when stratified to 5 levels, PCT results showed diverse and unsatisfied consistency between the two sampling methods (r=0.51-0.92, all P<0.01). But after PCT was converted to ordinal categorical variables, the stratified analysis showed that the coincidence rate of the measured values by the two sampling methods in each boundary area was 84.9%-97.1%. The dichotomous variables also showed a good consistency (coincidence rate 96.8%-99.3%, Youden index 0.82-0.89). According to the severity of disease, the serum PCT value was classified into 4 intervals（<0.5、0.5-<2.0、2.0-<10.0、≥10.0 μg/L）, and the peripheral blood PCT value also showed a good predictive value (AUC value was 0.991 2-0.997 9). The optimal cut points of peripheral whole blood PCT value 0.5、1.0、2.0、10.0 μg/L corresponding to venous serum PCT values were 0.395, 0.595, 1.175 and 3.545 μg/L, respectively. Conclusions: There is a good correlation between peripheral whole blood PCT value and the venous serum PCT value, which means that the peripheral whole blood PCT could facilitate the identification of infection and clinical severity. Besides, the sampling of peripheral whole blood is simple and easy to repeat.

[Prediction of suitable habitats of Ixodes persulcatus in China]

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effects of environmental factors the distribution of Ixodes persulcatus, and to predict the future suitable habitats of I. persulcatus in China.

METHODS

The known distribution sites of I. persulcatus in China were captured from national and international published literatures. The effects of 14 environmental factors on the distribution of I. persulcatus were examined using the Jackknife test, including mean annual temperature, mean monthly temperature range, isothermality, temperature seasonality, maximum temperature of the warmest month, minimum temperature of the coldest month, temperature annual range, mean temperature of the wettest quarter, mean temperature of the driest quarter, mean temperature of the wet-test quarter, mean temperature of the coldest quarter, annual mean precipitation, precipitation of the wettest month, precipitation of the driest month, precipitation seasonality, precipitation of the wettest quarter, precipitation of the driest quarter, precipitation of the warmest quarter, precipitation of the coldest quarter, elevation, slope, aspect and vegetation. The suitable habitats of I. persulcatus were predicted in China using the maximum entropy model and ArcGIS 10.7 software with the environmental factors.

RESULTS

Currently, the highly suitable habitats of I. persulcatus covered an area of 886 600 km² in China, which were predominantly located in northeastern China. The environmental factors that contributed more than 10% to the distribution of the suitable habitats of I. persulcatus in China included annual temperature variation range (39.1%), the coldest quarterly precipitation (23.2%), and the annual mean precipitation (11.9%). Based on the maximum entropy model, the suitable habitats of I. persulcatus were predicted to show a shrinking tendency towards northeastern China in 2070.

CONCLUSIONS

The suitable habitat of I. persulcatus strongly correlates with temperature and precipitation, and climate and environmental changes may lead to shrinking of the future suitable habitat of I. persulcatus in China.

[Single- versus double-suture knot for positioning the cutting plane in circumcision with a stapler]

OBJECTIVE

To observe the clinical effect of single-suture versus that of double-suture knot in positioning the cutting plane in circumcision with a stapler.

METHODS

We randomly assigned 120 patients with redundant prepuce or phimosis into three groups of an equal number to receive traditional circumcision without suture knot (group 1), circumcision with single-suture knot (group 2), and circumcision with double-suture knot (group 3) for positioning of the cutting plane. We recorded and compared the operation time, intraoperative blood loss, the rates of frenulum sewing, non-frenulum sewing, poor frenulum sewing and surgical conversion, intraoperative anxiety of the doctors, postoperative ecchymosis, and satisfaction with the retained ventral and dorsal prepuce and postoperative penile appearance among the three groups.

RESULTS

There were statistically significant differences among the three groups in the surgery time, intraoperative blood loss, the rates of frenulum sewing, non-frenulum sewing, poor frenulum sewing and surgical conversion, intraoperative anxiety of the doctors, and satisfaction with the retained ventral and dorsal prepuce and postoperative penile appearance, (P < 0.05), but not in postoperative ecchymosis (P = 0.849). The rate of satisfaction with the retained dorsal prepuce was remarkably higher in group 3 than in group 2 (P = 0.003), and the intraoperative anxiety rate of the doctors was lower in the former than in the latter group (P = 0.003).

CONCLUSIONS

Both single- and double-suture knots for positioning the cutting plane in circumcision with a stapler can help reduce the operation time, intraoperative blood loss, the rates of frenulum sewing, non-frenulum sewing, poor frenulum sewing and surgical conversion, intraoperative anxiety of the doctors, and satisfaction with the retained ventral and dorsal prepuce and postoperative penile appearance, and double-suture knot positioning has an even higher application value in decreasing the intraoperative anxiety of the doctors and increasing the satisfaction with the retained dorsal prepuce.

[Prostatic artery embolization for high-risk patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia: A clinical effect observation]

OBJECTIVE

To observe the clinical effect of prostatic artery embolization (PAE) in the treatment of high-risk patients with BPH.

METHODS

Nine high-risk patients with BPH underwent PAE in the Third Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University from January 2016 to June 2018. We followed up the patients and obtained their IPSS, quality of life score (QOL), postvoid residual urine volume (PVR), maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax), prostate volume (PV), hours of undisturbed sleep (HUS), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale score (SAS) and incidence of postoperative complications before and at 6, 12 and 24 months or longer after surgery, followed by comparative analysis of the parameters.

RESULTS

Compared with baseline, IPSS, QOL, PVR, Qmax, PV, HUS and SAS were all significantly improved in the patients at 6, 12 and ≥24 months after PAE (P < 0.05). Only 1 case complained of mild numbness in the buttocks, which was gradually relieved after acupuncture therapy.

CONCLUSIONS

Prostatic artery embolization is definitely effective for the treatment of high-risk patients with BPH with the bladder volume ≥200 ml, with few postoperative complications, and can be used as an effective therapeutic supplementary for improving the urination symptoms of the patients.

Association of FLAIR vascular hyperintensity and acute MCA stroke outcome changes with the severity of leukoaraiosis

PURPOSE

The clinical significance of FLAIR vascular hyperintensity (FVH), a marker of collateral circulation in ischaemic stroke, remains controversial. We hypothesised that the association between FVH and outcomes varies with the severity of leukoaraiosis (LA), another marker of collaterals, and that their combined significance may vary with time.

METHODS

We included 459 consecutive patients with middle cerebral artery (MCA) stroke. Proximal and distal FVHs were distinguished based on location. LA was divided into two grades, according to Fazekas scores of 0-2 and 3-6. Symptom-to-MRI time was divided into two categories: ≤ 14 days and ≥ 15 days.

RESULTS

We found no difference in FVH proportion according to LA grade. Multivariate analysis revealed that LA and FVH status were independently associated with unfavourable outcomes (modified Rankin scale ≥ 2) in patients with symptom-to-MRI times ≤ 14 days (P = 0.008), but not in those with symptom-to-MRI times ≥15 days (P = 0.61). In the group with symptom-to-MRI times ≤14 days, patients with LA 3-6 and FVH(+) (OR, 3.044; 95% CI, 1.116-8.305) were more likely to have unfavourable clinical outcomes compared with patients with LA 0-2 and FVH(+) but not compared with those with LA 0-2 and FVH(-) or LA 3-6 and FVH(-). In addition, FVH location did not influence the relationship between FVH and outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

The association between FVH and outcomes was influenced by the degree of LA in the acute but not in the subacute and chronic stages of MCA infarction. FVH predicts clinical outcomes independently only in those with more extensive LA.

Heparin-binding protein measurement improves the prediction of myocardial injury-related cardiogenic shock

Background

Heparin-binding protein (HBP), a potent inducer of increased vascular permeability, is a potentially useful biomarker for predicting outcomes in patients with postoperative myocardial injury-related cardiogenic shock (MIRCS). We aimed to evaluate and validate HBP as a prognostic biomarker for postoperative MIRCS.

Methods

We performed a case-control study in 792 patients undergoing cardiac surgery from January 1, 2016, to August 1, 2019, including 172 patients with postoperative MIRCS and 620 age- and sex-matched controls. The association between HBP and MIRCS was determined by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) with area under the curve (AUC) were performed to calculate the cut-off value, sensitivity and specificity. The association between HBP and cardiac troponin T (cTnT) was determined by multivariable linear regression analysis. Blood samples were drawn from the coronary sinus and arterial line of the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) before aortic cross-clamping (time point 1) and 5 min after aortic declamping (time point 2).

Results

Before aortic cross-clamping, coronary sinus HBP (HBP_CS1) showed no differences between the two groups. However, after declamping, the MIRCS group had a significantly higher sinus HBP level (HBP_CS2) than did the control group. HBP_CS2 predicted MIRCS with an AUC of 0.85 (95% CI: 0.81–0.89, cut-off: 220 ng/ml, sensitivity: 92% and specificity: 70%). After adjusting for confounding factors, we found that HBP was an independent risk factor for MIRCS (OR: 7.65, 95% CI: 4.86–12.06, P < 0.01) and was positively associated with cTnT (β > 0, P < 0.01).

Conclusions

Elevated levels of coronary sinus HBP were useful biomarkers for predicting MIRCS after cardiac surgery.

[Misdiagnosis analysis: 120 patients with nasal extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma in head and neck]

Objective:The Clinicopathological characteristics and the reason of misdiagnosis about nasal extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma in head and neck（ENKTL） are analysised to raise awareness and reduce misdiagnosis. Method:One hundred and twenty patients with ENKTL, diagnosed pathologically in head and neck from May 2010 to April 2018, were analyzed retrospectively. All cases were divided into misdiagnosed group and non-misdiagnosed group according to whether there were misdiagnosis and mistreatment before diagnosis. The differences of clinicopathological characteristics between the two groups before and after diagnosis were compared. The differences of overall survival（OS） between the two groups after treatment were also compared. Result:The misdiagnosis rate of this study was 71.7%, and they were misdiagnosed as sinusitis, nasal polyps, upper respiratory tract infection and so on. On the whole, the 1-year OS, 3-year OS and 5-year OS were 77.8%, 65.9% and 49.3% respectively. There was no significant difference in sex, age, first symptom, initial site, B symptom, superficial lymph node enlargement and weight loss between two groups before diagnosis（P>0.05）, however, there were significant differences in relative specific signs, hospital grade and time from first visit to definite diagnosis（P<0.05）. The proportion of the high-level hospitals in the first visit hospital was significantly lower than that in the non-misdiagnosed group, while the time from the first visit to the final diagnosis was significantly longer than that in the non-misdiagnosed group. There was no significant difference in international prognostic index（IPI） score, expression of Ki-67, therapeutic schedule, chemotherapy regimen for patients receiving chemotherapy, and radiation dose for patients receiving radiotherapy after diagnosis between the two groups（P>0.05）, but there was a significant difference in the clinical stages of Ann Arbor between the two groups（P<0.05）. The clinical staging of the misdiagnosed group was later than that of the non-misdiagnosed group. The 1-year OS, 3-year OS and 5-year OS were 73.6%, 59.3% and 43.2% in the misdiagnosed group respectively, and 88.2%, 82.4% and 64.2% in the non-misdiagnosed group respectively. The overall survival rate in the misdiagnosis group was lower than that in the non-misdiagnosed group, and the overall survival time was lower than that in the non-misdiagnosed group. However, there was no significant difference in the overall survival rates between the early stage（Ⅰ and Ⅱ） and the advanced stage（Ⅲ and Ⅳ） of Ann Arbor（P>0.05）. Conclusion:The non-specific clinical and the complexity of pathological features of ENKTL in head and neck might cause misdiagnosis, which leads to prolonged time from first visit to definite diagnosis, thus results in disease progression, and ultimately may lead to decreased overall survival rate. To avoid the misdiagnosis and early diagnosis is very important.

Facile Synthesis and Microwave-Absorption Properties of Organic-Inorganic CoFe₂O₄/Polyaniline Nanocomposites with Embedded Structure

Organic-inorganic CoFe₂O₄/polyaniline (CoFe₂O₄/PA) nanocomposites with embedded structures were synthesized by combining the sol-gel auto-combustion process and in-situ oxidative polymerization. The phases and morphologies of the prepared samples were identified. The pure CoFe₂O₄ samples exhibited inferior microwave-absorption properties in a frequency range of 2-18 GHz. Upon the incorporation of PA, the formed CoFe₂O₄/PA nanocomposites exhibited rather good absorption performances. When the sample thickness was 2.5 mm, the maximum reflection loss (RL) reached -22.3 dB, while the RL below -10 dB corresponded to the range of 11.0-17.1 GHz, which contains almost the entire Ku-band, making the structure promising for commercial and military applications. A physical model was employed to explain the effects of the embedded structure on the microwave-absorption performances. The excellent microwave-absorption performances could be attributed to the interfacial polarization and repeated reflection of the microwaves inside the CoFe₂O₄/PA composite.

Acute phase serum cathepsin S level and cathepsin S/cystatin C ratio are the associated factors with cerebral infarction and their diagnostic value for cerebral infarction

Cathepsin S plays an important role in the pathogenesis of several cardiovascular diseases; however, the relationship between serum cathepsin S and cerebral infarction (CI) is still unknown. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between acute phase serum cathepsin S level and cerebral infarction. A total of 202 stroke patients were enrolled into this study, and were divided into cerebral infarction (n = 140) group and non-cerebral infarction group (non-CI, n = 62). Fifty healthy individuals were recruited as the control group. Serum levels of cathepsin S and cystatin C were measured at days 1, 7, and 14 posthospitalization. Compared to the non-CI group, the CI group had significantly higher rates of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and smoking (all P < 0.05). The CI group had significantly higher cathepsin S levels and cathepsin S to cystatin C ratio (CatS/CysC) at both days 1 and 7 posthospitalization (both P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that cathepsin S level (day 7) and CatS/CysC (days 1 and 7) were the associated factors with CI (all P < 0.05). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed that the Area Under Curve (AUC) value of CatS-day7, CatS/CysC-day1, and CatS/CysC-day7 were 0.726 (95% CI: 0.652-0.800, P < 0.001), 0.641 (95% CI: 0.559-0.723, P = 0.001), and 0.721 (95% CI: 0.645-0.797, P = 0.039), respectively. Cathepsin S and CatS/CysC were associated with acute CI, and may have the potential to be the diagnostic biomarkers for CI. Our findings help to better understand the role of serum cathepsin S level in CI.

The Association between FLAIR Vascular Hyperintensity and Stroke Outcome Varies with Time from Onset

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

FLAIR vascular hyperintensity has been recognized as a marker of collaterals in ischemic stroke, but the impact on outcome is still controversial. We hypothesized that the association between FLAIR vascular hyperintensity and outcome varies with time.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We included 459 consecutive patients with middle cerebral artery stroke and divided them into 3 groups by symptom-to-MR imaging time (group 1, ≤7 days; group 2, 8-14 days; group 3, ≥15 days). The FLAIR vascular hyperintensity score, ranging from 0 to 3 points, was based on territory distributions of different MCA segments. The associations between FLAIR vascular hyperintensity and outcome with time were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively.

RESULTS

No patients underwent MR imaging within 6 hours of onset. The proportion of FLAIR vascular hyperintensity (+) and severe stenosis or occlusion of MCA was not significantly dependent on time. In groups 1 and 2, FLAIR vascular hyperintensity (+) was significantly associated with larger lesions, the prevalence of flow injury, and unfavorable outcome (mRS ≥ 2). There were no such associations in group 3. Multiple logistic regressions demonstrated that FLAIR vascular hyperintensity (+) was an independent risk factor for unfavorable outcome in group 2. Infarction volume tended to increase with the increase of the distal FLAIR vascular hyperintensity score in groups 1 and 2, while declining in group 3.

CONCLUSIONS

FLAIR vascular hyperintensity is associated with unfavorable outcome within 6 hours to 14 days of onset, while the wider distribution of distal FLAIR vascular hyperintensity may be favorable beyond 14 days of onset in MCA infarction. Symptom-to-MR imaging time should be considered when assessing the prognostic value of FLAIR vascular hyperintensity.

[Therapeutic effect of low-temperature radiofrequency coblation on early-stage laryngeal cancer]

Objective: To evaluate the safety,efficacy and prognosis of low-temperature plasma radiofrequency coblation for early-stage laryngeal cancer(Tis, T1 and T2). Method: A retrospective analysis of 202 patients with early-stage laryngeal cancer who underwent the low-temperature radiofrequency coblation surgery, including 34 cases of Tis(16.83%), 49 cases of stage T1aN0M0(24.26%), 50 cases of stage T1bN0M0(24.75%) and 69 cases of stage T2N0M0(34.16%). Surgical patients were followed up closely for 6 to 60 months, with a median follow-up of 29 months. Result: Of the 202 patients,165(81.68%) had no recurrence and achieved good surgical results. None of them suffered severe complications such as post-operative hemorrhage and asphyxia. 37 cases(18.32%) had recurrence, including 1 case(0.50%) in stage Tis, 7 cases(3.47%) in stage T1a,7 cases(3.47%) in stage T1b, and 22 cases(10.89%) in stage T2. Thirteen patients who had recurrence underwent total laryngectomy(5 of which had a recurrence of T3 and 8 of which progressed to T4), including 1 in the stage T1a,2 in the stage T1b, and 10 in the stage T2. Vertical hemilaryngectomy were performed in 4 cases, 3 cases of stage T1a and 1 case of stage T2; 5 cases underwent plasma radiofrequency coblation again, including 3 cases of stage T1b and 2 cases of stage T2,no recurrence was found in all the patients; 1 patient had no obvious recurrence in the larynx but had cervical lymph node metastasis, radical neck dissection was performed; 1 patient with stage T2 recurrence was treated with a tracheotomy to relieve laryngeal obstruction without further treatment;3 cases showed improvement by radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment after recurrence; 9 death cases,5 patients died after radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and 4 patients stopped getting treatment after recurrence.Conclusion: Low-temperature radiofrequency coblation surgery for patients with early-stage laryngeal cancer has great advantages in the preservation of laryngeal function and reduction of surgical trauma after surgery compared with traditional surgical method, and can obtain satisfactory results, but the selection of surgical indications for some patients with clinical stage T2 is still need to be carefully considered..

Self-cross-linked melamine-formaldehyde-pectin aerogel with excellent water resistance and flame retardancy

Self-cross-linked aerogel based on pectin and melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF) was fabricated via freeze-drying method using water as solvent, where pectin is structural material meanwhile acting as acid to catalyse the cross-linking of MF. The cross-linking reaction easily occurs without additional additives, which can be significantly accelerated at elevated temperatures, with a critical value of about 55 °C. The obtained aerogel shows network microstructures as observed with SEM. With increasing pectin content, the aerogel shows significantly increased compressive modulus. The compressive modulus of M10Pe5 arrives 23.2 MPa, the specific modulus of which arrives 188 MPa cm³/g, while pure MF aerogel are too fragile to keep intact after freeze-dried. The resulting aerogel has good thermal stability, excellent water resistance (can be second dried with limited strength loss) and low flammability. This partially bio-based novel aerogel with impressive properties is promising in many applications.

The effects of imidacloprid combined with endosulfan on IgE-mediated mouse bone marrow-derived mast cell degranulation and anaphylaxis

Low levels of endosulfan are known to stimulate mast cells to release allergic mediators, while imidacloprid can inhibit IgE-mediated mast cell degranulation. However, little information about the effects of both pesticides together on mast cell degranulation is available. To measure the effects, IgE-activated mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMCs) were treated with imidacloprid and endosulfan, individually, and simultaneously at equi-molar concentrations in tenfold steps ranging from 10^-4 to 10^-11 M, followed by measuring several allergy-related parameters expressed in BMMCs: the mediator production and influx of Ca²⁺, the phosphorylation content of NF-κB in the FcεRI signaling pathway. Then, the effects of the mixtures on IgE-induced passive systemic anaphylaxis (PSA) of BALB/c was detectded. This study clearly showed that the application of equi-molar mixtures of both pesticides with 10^-4-10^-5 M significantly inhibited the IgE-mediated mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells degranulation in vitro and 10^-4 M of them decreased IgE-mediated PSA in vivo, as the application of imidacloprid at the same concentration alone did. Morever endosulfan alone had no remarkable stimulatory effects on any of the factors measured. In conclusion, simultaneous application of equi-molar concentrations of both pesticides generally showed highly similar responses compared to the responses to imidacloprid alone, suggesting that the effects of the mixture could be solely attributed to the effects of imidacloprid.

Tracking the behavior of Maillard browning in lysine/arginine-sugar model systems under high hydrostatic pressure

BACKGROUND

High-pressure processing is gaining popularity in the food industry. However, its effect on the Maillard reaction during high-pressure-assisted pasteurization and sterilization is not well documented. This study aimed to investigate the effects of high hydrostatic pressure on the Maillard reaction during these processes using amino acid (lysine or arginine)-sugar (glucose or fructose) solution models.

RESULTS

High pressure retarded the intermediate and final stages of the Maillard reaction in the lysine-sugar model. For the lysine-glucose model, the degradation rate of Amadori compounds was decelerated, while acceleration was observed in the arginine-sugar model. Increased temperature not only accelerated the Maillard reaction over time but also formed fluorescent compounds with different emission wavelengths. Lysine reacted with the sugars more readily than arginine under the same conditions. In addition, it was easier for lysine to react with glucose, whereas arginine reacted more readily with fructose under high pressure.

CONCLUSION

High pressure exerts different effects on lysine-sugar and arginine-sugar models. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

[Related factors for severe liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C patients with remunerated blood donation history in Jurong of Jiangsu province]

Objective: The incidence of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C is high. Without effective treatment, it would lead to liver cirrhosis. This study is to identify the related factors for the incidence of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C in order to make early intervention treatment and reduce the case fatality rate. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was conducted in adults aged ≥50 years with local residence for more than 5 years in Jurong of Jiangsu province from March to May in 2015, the patients infected with hepatitis C virus through remunerated blood donation were screened and included in the analysis. Descriptive statistical analysis was done to compare the differences in the incidence of liver fibrosis among the patients with different age, sex and education level or co-infected with hepatitis B virus or not. The risk factors for severe liver fibrosis were identified with univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Liver fibrosis was diagnosed by using FIB-4 index method. Results: A total of 719 patients with chronic hepatitis C were surveyed. Severe liver fibrosis developed in 285 of the 719 patients, in whom 21.84% was males. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the patients with higher education level (OR=0.65, 95%CI: 0.47-0.90) and with access of antiviral therapy (OR=0.33, 95%CI: 0.22-0.49) had lower risk for severe liver fibrosis, the patients with high fasting blood glucose level (OR=1.80, 95% CI: 1.19-2.77) and abnormal white blood cell count (OR=2.77, 95% CI: 1.95-3.90) had higher risk for severe liver fibrosis. Conclusions: The incidence of severe liver fibrosis in patients with hepatitis C was affected by many factors. Higher education level and antiviral therapy were the protective factors, but high fasting blood glucose level and abnormal white blood cell count were the risk factors.

[The clinical and imaging features of 118 patients with spontaneous cerebral arterial dissections presenting with ischemic stroke]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the clinical and radiologic features of patients with spontaneous cerebral arterial dissections (CADs) presenting with ischemic stroke and to explore the effect of gender and age on those features.

METHODS

Patients admitted to our stroke center diagnosed as ischemic stroke secondary to CADs from August 2008 to April 2015 were prospectively registered. Patients aged between 15 to 80 years old, who had acute brain infarcts within the territory of a major cerebral artery affected by a dissection confirmed by the neuroradiological examinations, were enrolled in the study. The followings were the exclusion criteria: (1) there were any potential causes for the brain infarcts other than CADs; (2) CADs were the results of a definite cause; (3) the clinical data were incomplete.

RESULTS

A total of 118 patients were enrolled in the study with the mean age of (44.2±12.8) years old. There were 87 men (73.7%) and 67 patients (56.8%) aged under 45 years old. Smoking (41.5%), hypertension (25.4%) and hypercholesterolemia (21.2%) were the three leading risk factors for stroke. Hypercholesterolemia was more common in the male patients (25.3% vs 9.7%, P=0.021), whereas hypertension (39.2% vs 14.9%, P=0.005) and diabetes (25.5% vs 4.5%, P=0.002) were more common in the patients aged 45 years or older. Headache or neck pain before or at the onset of stroke was more common in the female patients (67.7% vs 34.5%, P=0.002). A total of 71 patients were found with CADs of the anterior circulation, while 47 patients with that of the posterior circulation. The involvement of the intra and extracranial arteries were documented in 59 and 59 patients, respectively. The middle cerebral artery (MCA) was the most common site in the intracranial dissection and more MCA dissections were observed in the male patients (46.3% vs 11.1%, P=0.016). The dissection of intracranial carotid artery was more common in patients aged under 45 years old (38.7% vs 0, P<0.001). Lumen status of CADs often presented as stenosis (43.2%) and occlusion (41.2%), while less aneurysm (5.9%) and aneurysm with stenosis (9.3%) were observed. Aneurysm was found to be more common in patients aged 45 years or older (11.8% vs 1.5%, P=0.042).

CONCLUSION

Chinese patients with spontaneous CADs presenting with ischemic stroke have unique clinical and imaging features, which correlated with age and gender.

[HCV infection status and risk factors in remunerated blood donors in Jiangsu province]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the infection status of HCV in remunerated blood donors and risk factors in Jiangsu province.

METHODS

A Cross-sectional study was conducted among people aged >50 years. Questionnaires were used to collect the information about their demographic characteristics and risk behaviors, and venous blood samples were collected from them to detect HCV anti-body, HCV-RNA and other biochemical indicators. EpiData and Stata were used for data entry and statistical analysis.

RESULTS

The overall HCV sero-prevalence rates were 22.55% and 61.05% among remunerated blood donors. Data from multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that alanine aminotransferase(ALT)(adjusted OR=1.38, 95%CI: 1.18-1.62)and aspartate aminotransferase(AST)(adjusted OR=1.30, 95%CI: 1.10-1.54)were associated with the outcomes of HCV infection, and fasting plasma glucose(adjusted OR=1.17, 95%CI: 1.01-1.35)were associated with HCV RNA viral loads.

CONCLUSION

The prevalence of HCV infection in remunerated blood donors was high, clinical ALT, AST and fasting plasma glucose levels were associated with the risk for HCV infection and HCV RNA viral load.

Highly Efficient Flame Retardant Polyurethane Foam with Alginate/Clay Aerogel Coating

Highly efficient flame retardant polyurethane foams with alginate/clay aerogel coatings were fabricated using a freeze-drying method. The microstructure and the interaction of the samples were characterized with scanning electron and optical microscopy (SEM) and (OM). The results show that PU foam has a porous structure with pore sizes of several hundred microns, and that of aerogel ranges from 10 to 30 μm. The PU foam matrix and the aerogel coatings have strong interactions, due to the infusion of aerogel into the porous structure of the foam and the tension generated during the freeze-drying process. Both the PU foam and the aerogel exhibit good thermal stabilities, with onset decomposition temperatures above 240 °C. Combustion parameters, including LOI, TTI, HRR, TSR, FIGRA, CO, and CO₂, all indicate significantly reduced fire risk. Total heat release of all but one of the samples was maintained, indicating that the flame retardant mechanism is to decrease flame spread rate by forming a heat, oxygen, and smoke barrier, rather than by reducing fuel content. This facile and inexpensive post-treatment of PU foam could expand its fire safe applications.

Serum soluble RAGE level inversely correlates with left ventricular hypertrophy in essential hypertension patients

Soluble receptor for advanced glycation end-products (sRAGE) acts as a decoy to prevent interaction between RAGE and its pro-inflammatory ligands. sRAGE levels have been found to decrease in chronic inflammatory diseases, including hypertension. However, few data have been reported concerning the association between serum sRAGE levels and hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Fasting blood samples were obtained from 209 essential hypertensive patients, and sRAGE levels were measured using a commercially available double-sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. All patients underwent complete transthoracic echocardiographic examination. LVH was defined as a left ventricular mass index >115 g/m(2) for men and >95 g/m(2) for women. Eighty-one hypertensive patients (38.76%) were categorized in the LVH(+) group. Age (P = 0.009), hypertension duration (P = 0.013), triglyceride levels (P = 0.028), and systolic blood pressure (P = 0.026) were higher, and sRAGE and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were lower in the LVH(+) group compared with the LVH(-) group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that sRAGE level [odds ratio (OR) = 0.916; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.864-0.984; P = 0.003], hypertension duration (OR = 1.024; 95%CI = 1.003-1.052; P = 0.027), and triglyceride level (OR = 1.017; 95%CI = 1.005-1.039; P = 0.018) were independent predictors of LVH in hypertensive patients. In conclusion, serum sRAGE level was inversely associated with LVH in hypertensive patients.

Biomass-Based Mechanically Strong and Electrically Conductive Polymer Aerogels and Their Application for Supercapacitors

A novel biomass-based mechanically strong and electrically conductive polymer aerogel was fabricated from aniline and biodegradable pectin. The strong hydrogen bonding interactions between polyaniline (PANI) and pectin resulted in a defined structure and enhanced properties of the aerogel. All the resultant aerogels exhibited self-surppoted 3D nanoporous network structures with high surface areas (207-331m(2)/g) and hierarchical pores. The results from electrical conductivity measurements and compressive tests revealed that these aerogels also had favorable conductivities (0.002-0.1 S/m) and good compressive modulus (1.2-1.4 MPa). The aerogel further used as electrode for supercapacitors showed enhanced capacitive performance (184 F/g at 0.5 A/g). Over 74% of the initial capacitance was maintained after repeating 1000 cycles of the cylic voltammetry test, while the capacitance retention of PANI was only 57%. The improved electrochemical performance may be attributed to the combinative properties of good electrical conductivity, BET surface areas, and stable nanoporous structure of the aerogel. Thus, this aerogel shows great potential as electrode materials for supercapacitors.

[Influencing factors of visual hallucinations in patients with Parkinson's disease and its relationship with sleep disorders]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of visual hallucinations in patients with Parkinson's disease(PD), and to analyze the relationship between visual hallucinations and sleep disorders.

METHODS

We recruited 187 patients with PD(H-Y Ⅰ-Ⅲ) from outpatient department in Beijing Hospital. The patients were investigated for general information and the use of medicine. The patients were divided into visual hallucination(VH) group and non-hallucination(non-VH) group. A comparison study was conducted between two groups. We investigated the sleep disorders of PD patients according to Non Motor Symptom Quest(NMSquest) and Parkinson's disease sleep scale(PDSS). Logistic stepwise multiple regression procedures were used to determine the best predictive model of visual hallucinations in patients with PD.

RESULTS

(1) 42 cases(22.5%) of PD patients were accompanied by visual hallucinations; (2) the VH group and non-VH group had no difference in age, sex, duration of illness, the scores of Minimum Mental State Examination(MMSE) and levodopa equivalent doses (LED). The scores of Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale(UPDRS) Ⅰ, the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety(HAMA) and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression(HAMD) in VH group were significantly higher than those in non-VH group[3.5(2, 5) vs 2 (1, 3); 10(6.75, 15) vs 8(5, 11); 11(7.75, 17) vs 9(5, 13); P<0.05]; (3) the incidences of vivid dreams and REM sleep behavior disorder(RBD) in VH group were significantly higher than those in non-VH group(61.9% vs 40.7%, 71.4% vs 47.6%, P<0.05). There were no significant differences in incidences of excessive daytime sleepiness and restless legs between two groups(P>0.05). The score of PDSS in VH group was significantly lower than that in non-VH group[111(92.75, 128.25) vs 123(109, 135), P<0.05]; (4) the Logistic stepwise multiple regression revealed that vivid dreams(P=0.045) and the score of PDSS(P=0.006) were the independent influencing factors for VH in PD patients.

CONCLUSIONS

The incidence of VH in PD with H-Y staging Ⅰ-Ⅱ is 22.5%. The presence of vivid dreams and severe sleep disorder are independently associated with VH in PD.

Excellent Electromagnetic Absorption Capability of Ni/Carbon Based Conductive and Magnetic Foams Synthesized via a Green One Pot Route

Electromagnetic microwave absorption materials have attracted a great deal of attention. Foams for the low density and tunable porosity are considered as ideal microwave absorbents, while with the requirement of improving their inherent electromagnetic properties. In this manuscript, an innovative, easy, and green method was presented to synthesize an electromagnetic functionalized Ni/carbon foam, in which the formation of Ni nanoparticles and carbon occurred simultaneously from an affordable alginate/Ni(2+) foam precursor. The resultant Ni/carbon foam had a low density (0.1 g/cm(-3)) and high Ni nanoparticles loading (42 wt %). These Ni nanoparticles with a diameter of about 50-100 nm were highly crystallized and evenly embedded in porous graphite carbon without aggregation. Also, the resultant foam had a high surface area (451 m(2) g(-1)) and porosity and showed a moderate conductivity (6 S/m) and significant magnetism. Due to these special characteristics, the Ni/carbon foam exhibited greatly enhanced microwave absorption ability. Only with 10 wt % of functional fillers being used in the test template, the Ni/carbon foam based composite could reach an effective absorption bandwidth (below -10 dB) of 4.5 GHz and the minimum reflection value of -45 dB at 13.3 GHz with a thickness of 2 mm, while the traditional carbon foam and nano-Ni powder both showed very weak microwave absorption (the minimum reflection value < -10 dB). This foam was demonstrated to be a lightweight, high performance, and low filler loading microwave absorbing material. Furthermore, the detailed absorption mechanism of the foam was investigated. The result showed that the derived strong dielectric loss, including conductivity loss, interface polarization loss, weak magnetic loss, and naoporosity, contributes a great electromagnetic absorption.
