Abstract
Objective: To assess the effectiveness of a 6-month Ba Duan Jin exercise program in improving the balance of community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A two arms, parallel-group, cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted in 1 028 community residents aged 60-80 years in 40 communities in 5 provinces of China. Participants in the intervention group (20 communities, 523 people) received Ba Duan Jin exercise 5 days/week, 1 hour/day for 6 months, and three times of falls prevention health education, and the control group (20 communities, 505 people) received falls prevention health education same as the intervention group. The Berg balance scale (BBS) score was the leading outcome indicator, and the secondary outcome indicators included the length of time of standing on one foot (with eyes open and closed), standing in a tandem stance (with eyes open and closed), the closed circle test, and the timed up to test. Results: A total of 1 028 participants were included in the final analysis, including 731 women (71.11%) and 297 men (28.89%), and the age was (69.87±5.67) years. After the 3-month intervention, compared with the baseline data, the BBS score of the intervention group was significantly higher than the control group by 3.05 (95%CI: 2.23-3.88) points (P<0.001). After the 6-month intervention, compared with the baseline data, the BBS score of the intervention group was significantly higher than the control group by 4.70 (95%CI: 4.03-5.37) points (P<0.001). Ba Duan Jin showed significant improvement (P<0.05) in all secondary outcomes after 6 months of exercise in the intervention group compared with the control group. Conclusions: This study showed that Ba Duan Jin exercise can improve balance in community-dwelling older adults aged 60-80. The longer the exercise time, the better the improvement.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the characteristics of the association between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and nonfatal cardio-cerebrovascular disease risk in a community population. Method: This was a prospective cohort study. From December 2011 to April 2012, the first investigation was conducted among subjects with more than 40-year old who were from Shijingshan district and Pingguoyuan community in Beijing. The second investigation was conducted from April to October 2015. All the subjects were divided into three groups according to the tertile of the TyG index at baseline. The multivariate Cox proportional risk regression model was established to explore the correlation between the TyG index and nonfatal cardio-cerebrovascular disease risk and the Kaplan-Meier survival curve of the TyG index group was drawn. Subgroup analyses were performed according to age, gender, body mass index, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, and hyperlipidemia to determine the correlation characteristics between the TyG index and nonfatal cardio-cerebrovascular disease among subgroups. Results: A total of 9 577 subjects were finally included to analyze. The mean follow-up time of this study was (34.14±3.84) months. During the follow-up, 363 subjects (3.8%) occurred nonfatal cardio-cerebrovascular disease. The multivariate Cox regression analysis results showed that the hazard ratio (HR) of nonfatal cardio-cerebrovascular disease in the high TyG index group was 1.54 (95%CI 1.19-1.98), 1.60 (95%CI 1.23-2.10), and 1.57 (95%CI 1.20-2.05) in the three models, compared with the low TyG index group. The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the risk of nonfatal cardio-cerebrovascular disease increased from the low-TyG index group to the high-TyG index group (P=0.015). In the six subgroups analysis, only gender was shown to have a significant interaction effect with the TyG index and nonfatal cardio-cerebrovascular disease risk. In the female population, the risk of nonfatal cardio-cerebrovascular disease is significantly increased with the increase in the TyG index level (P<0.001). Conclusions: A high TyG index is independently related to the increased risk of nonfatal cardio-cerebrovascular disease in the Beijing community population. Gender has a significant interaction with the TyG index and nonfatal cardio-cerebrovascular disease risk. Therefore, the TyG index may be a useful marker to predict the nonfatal cardio-cerebrovascular disease risk of a community population.

Abstract
Dendritic cells (DCs) that express T cell immunoglobulin domain molecule-4 (TIM4), a cell surface receptor for phosphatidylserine, induce T helper 2 (TH2) cell responses and allergic reactions. We elucidated the role of the transcription factor X-box-binding protein-1 (XBP1) in the induction of the TH2 cell response through its role in generating TIM4+ DCs. We found that XBP1 was required for TIM4 mRNA and protein expression in airway DCs in response to the cytokine interleukin-2 (IL-2) and that this pathway was required for TIM4 expression on DCs in response to the allergens PM2.5 and Derf1. The IL-2-XBP1-TIM4 axis in DCs contributed to Derf1/PM2.5-induced, aberrant TH2 cell responses in vivo. An interaction between the guanine nucleotide exchange factor Son of sevenless-1 (SOS1) and the GTPase RAS promoted XBP1 and TIM4 production in DCs. Targeting the XBP1-TIM4 pathway in DCs prevented or alleviated experimental airway allergy. Together, these data suggest that XBP1 is required for TH2 cell responses by inducing the development of TIM4+ DCs, which depends on the IL-2-XBP1-SOS1 axis. This signaling pathway provides potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of TH2 cell-dependent inflammation or allergic diseases.

Abstract
Objectives: To examine the influence of adjuvant chemotherapy after radical resection on the survival of patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(ICC) and to identify patients who may benefit from it. Methods: The clinical and pathological data of 654 patients with ICC diagnosed by postoperative pathology from December 2011 to December 2017 at 13 hospitals in China were collected retrospectively. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria,455 patients were included in this study,including 69 patients (15.2%) who received adjuvant chemotherapy and 386 patients (84.8%) who did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy. There were 278 males and 177 females,with age of 59 (16) years (M(IQR))(range:23 to 88 years). Propensity score matching (PSM) method was used to balance the difference between adjuvant chemotherapy group and non-adjuvant chemotherapy group. Kaplan-Meier method was used to plot the survival curve,the Log-rank test was used to compare the difference of overall survival(OS) and recurrence free survival(RFS)between the two groups. Univariate analysis was used to determine prognostic factors for OS. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were then performed for prognostic factors with P<0.10 to identify potential independent risk factors. The study population were stratified by included study variables and the AJCC staging system,and a subgroup analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method to explore the potential benefit subgroup population of adjuvant chemotherapy. Results: After 1∶1 PSM matching,69 patients were obtained in each group. There was no significant difference in baseline data between the two groups (all P>0.05). After PSM,Cox multivariate analysis showed that lymph node metastasis (HR=3.06,95%CI:1.52 to 6.16,P=0.039),width of resection margin (HR=0.56,95%CI:0.32 to 0.99,P=0.044) and adjuvant chemotherapy (HR=0.51,95%CI:0.29 to 0.91,P=0.022) were independent prognostic factors for OS. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the median OS time of adjuvant chemotherapy group was significantly longer than that of non-adjuvant chemotherapy group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in RFS time between the adjuvant chemotherapy group and the non-adjuvant chemotherapy group (P>0.05). Subgroup analysis showed that,the OS of female patients,without HBV infection,carcinoembryonic antigen<9.6 μg/L,CA19-9≥200 U/ml,intraoperative bleeding<400 ml,tumor diameter>5 cm,microvascular invasion negative,without lymph node metastasis,and AJCC stage Ⅲ patients could benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Adjuvant chemotherapy can prolong the OS of patients with ICC after radical resection,and patients with tumor diameter>5 cm,without lymph node metastasis,AJCC stage Ⅲ,and microvascular invasion negative are more likely to benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy.

Abstract
Objective: Development and validation of a nomogram for predicting the 4-year incidence of type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a Chinese population was attempted. Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted in Shijingshan District Pingguoyuan Community (Beijing, China) from December 2011 to April 2012 among adults aged≥40 years not suffering from T2DM. Finally, 8 058 adults free of T2DM were included with a median duration of follow-up of 4 years. Participants were divided into a modeling group and verification group using simple random sampling at a ratio of 7∶3. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional risk models were applied to identify the independent risk predictors in the modeling group. A nomogram was constructed to predict the 4-year incidence of T2DM based on the results of multivariate analysis. The Concordance Index and calibration plots were used to evaluate the differentiation and calibration of the nomogram in both groups. Results: A total of 5 641 individuals were in the modeling group and 2 417 people were in the validation group, of which 265 and 106 had T2DM, respectively, at 4-year follow-up. In the modeling group, age (HR=1.349, 95%CI 1.011-1.800), body mass index (HR=1.347, 95%CI 1.038-1.746), hyperlipidemia (HR=1.504, 95%CI 1.133-1.996), fasting blood glucose (HR=4.189, 95%CI 3.010-5.830), 2-h blood glucose level according to the oral glucose tolerance test (HR=3.005, 95%CI 2.129-4.241), level of glycosylated hemoglobin (HR=3.162, 95%CI 2.283-4.380), and level of γ-glutamyl transferase (HR=1.920, 95%CI 1.385-2.661) were independent risk factors for T2DM. Validation of the nomogram revealed the Concordance Index of the modeling group and validation group to be 0.906 (95%CI 0.888-0.925) and 0.844 (95%CI 0.796-0.892), respectively. Calibration plots showed good calibration in both groups. Conclusion: These data suggest that our nomogram could be a simple and reliable tool for predicting the 4-year risk of developing T2DM in a high-risk Chinese population.

Abstract
Starting phase of laying chicken life is the building stone for rearing and production stages. Since, fecal microbial transplantation (FMT) regulates the gut microbial diversity and affects the productive performance of the bird. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of FMT from feed-efficient broiler chicken could program the diversity of gut microbiota and growth of recipient native slow growing egg-laying chicks. For this, a total of 150 (one-day-old) Jing Hong chicks were randomly assigned into two groups, each group consisted of 5 replicates (n = 15 bird/ replicate). The control group (CON) and FMT recipient birds (FMT) fed on basal diet, the FMT group received an oral daily dose of FMT prepared from Cobb-500 chickens. The FMT performed from the 1d to 28d of age, through the experimental period, feed intake and body weight were recorded weekly. At the end of a 28-day trial, carcass traits were assessed and cecal samples were collected for microbiome assessment via 16S rRNA-based metagenomic analysis to characterize the diversity and functions of microbial communities. The data were statistically analyzed using R software. Body weight and body weight gain increased, and FCR decreased (p = 0.01) in FMT group. The relative abundance of Firmicutes and the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio were increased due to FMT administration (p = 0.01). A higher relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, and Bifidobacterium were presented in the FMT group. Meanwhile, Enterococcus, Helicobacter, and Bacteroides were more abundant in the CON group (p < 0.01). Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathways for microbial functions regarding amino acid metabolism, secondary metabolites biosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, and enzyme families, cofactors, and vitamins were significantly annotated in the FMT group. Overall, FMT administration from the donor of highly feed-efficient broilers improved weight gain by reshaping a distinct gut microbiome, which may be related to the metabolism and health in the recipients laying chicks, providing new insight on the application of the FMT technique for early life programming of laying chickens.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect and mechanism of sacubitril/valsartan on left ventricular remodeling and cardiac function in rats with heart failure. Methods: A total of 46 SPF-grade male Wistar rats weighed 300-350 g were acclimatized to the laboratory for 7 days. Rats were then divided into 4 groups: the heart failure group (n=12, intraperitoneal injection of adriamycin hydrochloride 2.5 mg/kg once a week for 6 consecutive weeks, establishing a model of heart failure); heart failure+sacubitril/valsartan group (treatment group, n=12, intragastric administration with sacubitril/valsartan 1 week before the first injection of adriamycin, at a dose of 60 mg·kg-1·d-1 for 7 weeks); heart failure+sacubitril/valsartan+APJ antagonist F13A group (F13A group, n=12, adriamycin and sacubitril/valsartan, intraperitoneal injection of 100 μg·kg-1·d-1 APJ antagonist F13A for 7 weeks) and control group (n=10, intraperitoneal injection of equal volume of normal saline). One week after the last injection of adriamycin or saline, transthoracic echocardiography was performed to detect the cardiac structure and function, and then the rats were executed, blood and left ventricular specimens were obtained for further analysis. Hematoxylin-eosin staining and Masson trichrome staining were performed to analyze the left ventricular pathological change and myocardial fibrosis. TUNEL staining was performed to detect cardiomyocyte apoptosis. mRNA expression of left ventricular myocardial apelin and APJ was detected by RT-qRCR. ELISA was performed to detect plasma apelin-12 concentration. The protein expression of left ventricular myocardial apelin and APJ was detected by Western blot. Results: Seven rats survived in the heart failure group, 10 in the treatment group, and 8 in the F13A group. Echocardiography showed that the left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) and the left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVESD) were higher (both P<0.05), while the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left ventricular fractional shortening (LVFS) were lower in the heart failure group than in the control group (both P<0.05). Compared with the heart failure group, rats in the treatment group were featured with lower LVEDD and LVESD (both P<0.05), higher LVEF and LVFS (both P<0.05), these beneficial effects were reversed in rats assigned to F13A group (all P<0.05 vs. treatment group). The results of HE staining showed that the cardiomyocytes of rats in the control group were arranged neatly and densely structured, the cardiomyocytes in the heart failure group were arranged in disorder, distorted and the gap between cells was increased, the cardiomyocytes in the treatment group were slightly neat and dense, and cardiomyocytes in the F13A group were featured similarly as the heart failure group. Masson staining showed that there were small amount of collagen fibers in the left ventricular myocardial interstitium of the control group, while left ventricular myocardial fibrosis was significantly increased, and collagen volume fraction (CVF) was significantly higher in the heart failure group than that of the control group (P<0.05). Compared with the heart failure group, the left ventricular myocardial fibrosis and the CVF were reduced in the treatment group (both P<0.05), these effects were reversed in the F13A group (all P<0.05 vs. treatment group). TUNEL staining showed that the apoptosis index (AI) of cardiomyocytes in rats was higher in the heart failure group compared with the control group (P<0.05), which was reduced in the treatment group (P<0.05 vs. heart failure group), this effect again was reversed in the F13A group (P<0.05 vs. treatment group). The results of RT-qPCR and Western blot showed that the mRNA and protein levels of apelin and APJ in left ventricular myocardial tissue of rats were downregulated in heart failure group (all P<0.05) compared with the control group. Compared with the heart failure group, the mRNA and protein levels of apelin and APJ were upregulated in the treatment group (all P<0.05), these effects were reversed in the F13A group (all P<0.05 vs. treatment group). ELISA test showed that the plasma apelin concentration of rats was lower in the heart failure group compared with the control group (P<0.05); compared with the heart failure group, the plasma apelin concentration of rats was higher in the treatment group (P<0.05), this effect was reversed in the F13A group (P<0.05 vs. treatment group). Conclusion: Sacubitril/valsartan can partially reverse left ventricular remodeling and improve cardiac function in rats with heart failure through modulating Apelin/APJ pathways.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the 2-dimension and 3-dimension changes of upper airway of patients who were diagnosed with idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) and anterior open bite as well as received bilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prostheses replacement or bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. Methods: This study is a retrospective study. Seventeen patients diagnosed as ICR and anterior open bite in Department of Orthognathic and TMJ surgery, West China Hospital of Sichuan University were selected (January 2018 to December 2021) and divided into bilateral TMJ protheses replacement group (group R, n=8) and orthognathic group (group O, n=9), according to which surgery they have performed. In order to compare variation of upper airway before and after surgery in different dimensions and sections within the same group or between groups, Spiral computed tomography data were obtained before (1 month) and after operation (10 to 12 months) to measure the total volume of airway (VT), the maximum sagittal area (MSA), the maximum cross-sectional area (MACA), the minimum cross-sectional area (MICA), the area of the most posterior plane(PPA), the area of soft-palate plane (SPA), the area of the most posterior point of tongue base plane (PTA), the area of the root of epiglottis plane (EA), the oropharyngeal airway volume (VO), the glossopharyngeal airway volume (VG) and the laryngeal airway volume (VL). Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to complete statistical analyses for VO (T2),SPA (T2),ΔMSA,ΔMACA in group R as well as PTA (T1),EA (T2) in group O. Statistical analyses of other items were performed with student's t test. Results: VT, VO, VG, VL, MSA, MACA, MIC, PPA, PTA and EA of group R (T2) were significantly increased after TMJ prosthesis with Lefort I osteotomy (P<0.05). Meanwhile the VT, VO, VG, MSA, MACA, MICA, PPA and SPA of group O (T2) were significantly increased (P<0.05). There were significant difference in ΔVT and ΔVL between group R [(6 854.80±3 197.82) mm3, (2 252.85±1 527.96) mm3] and group O [(3 367.91±3 124.62) mm3, (413.21±1 244.44) mm3](t=2.27, P=0.038; t=2.74, P=0.015). Conclusions: Bilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prostheses replacement and bimaxillary orthognathic surgery can both enlarge the areas and volumes of upper airway in patients who suffer from ICR and anterior open bite. Compared with bimaxillary orthognathic surgery, bilateral temporomandibular joint prostheses replacement plays a more pronounced role in enlargement and reconstruction of middle-inferior section of upper airway.

Abstract
Female genital tract chronic inflammation is common in clinics; the pathogenesis is not fully understood yet. House dust mite (HDM) involves the pathogenesis of many chronic diseases in human. This study aims to identify HDM-specific allergic response in the cervix of patients with cervical inflammation. Patients (n = 80) with chronic cervicitis (CC) and non-CC control (NC) subjects (n = 80) were recruited into this study. Vaginal lavage fluids (VLF) were collected from CC patients and NC subjects. Cellular components and fluid part of VLF were separated by centrifugation, and analyzed by flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We found that a portion (52 out of 80) of CC patients responded to HDM, manifesting positive skin prick test, and HDM-specific IgE and IgG was detected in the VLF (designated CCp patients). VLF of CCp patients showed a Th2-dominant profile. HDM-specific Th2 cells were detected in VLF in CCp patients. Exposure to HDM in the culture induced proinflammatory cytokine release from CCp VLF CD4+ T cells. Exposure to CCp VLF CD4+ T cell-conditioned medium induced de novo Th2 response. Direct exposure to HDM induced allergic response in the cervix of CCp patients. In summary, a portion of CC patients respond to HDM challenge in the cervix. Exposure to HDM induces an allergy-like response in the cervix of CCp patients.

Abstract
Eosinophils (Eos) are the major effector cells in allergic response. The regulation of Eo is not fully understood yet. Flagellin (FGN) has immune regulatory functions. This study aims to elucidate the role of FGN in maintaining Eo at the static status in the intestinal tissues. A mouse food allergy (FA) model was developed. Eo mediator levels in the serum or culture supernatant or intestinal lavage fluids were assessed and used as an indicator of Eo activation. The results showed that less FGN amounts were detected in the FA mouse intestinal tissues, that were negatively correlated with the Eo activation. Mast cell-derived chymase bound FGN to induce FGN degradation. FGN formed complexes with FcγRI on Eos to prevent specific antigens from binding FcγRI, and thus, to prevent Eo activation. Administration of FGN efficiently alleviated experimental FA. In conclusion, FGN plays a critical role in maintaining Eos at static status in the intestine. Administration of FGN can alleviate experimental FA. FGN may be a novel drug candidate to be used in the treatment of Eo-related diseases.

Abstract
The corrosion resistance of the free surface (FS) and roller surface (RS) of Fe70Si8B12Nb10 amorphous ribbon was systematically compared in simulated seawater (0.6 M NaCl). The electrochemical method and scanning electron microscopy showed that the FS corrosion resistance was higher than that of the RS. XPS etching and Mott–Schottky tests indicated that the passivation films on the FS and RS were divided into outer and inner layers. In the spinning process, the elements with a higher atomic mass tend to segregate toward the FS, while the elements with a lower atomic mass segregate toward the RS. These results provide data that can be used to improve the quality of melt spinning ribbons and to optimize the manufacturing of involved electric devices. The two surfaces of the Fe70Si8B12Nb10 amorphous ribbon have very different corrosion resistances due to different structures.![]()

Abstract
Scars are the result of abnormal repair of skin tissue trauma. Recently, fractional laser is more and more widely used in the treatment of scars, but its mechanism is not clear. Studies have shown that fractional laser could produce multiple microthermal zones in target skin, induce wound repair responses, affect the function of epidermal and dermal cells, induce changes in blood vessels and collagens, and change the expression of heat shock proteins, microRNA, matrix metalloproteinases, cytokines such as transforming growth factor β, basic fibroblast growth factor, and facilitate drug delivery, thus achieving the effect of treating scars. This article reviews the mechanism of fractional laser in treating scars from three aspects, including the tissue and cell mechanism, molecular mechanism, and drug delivery.

Abstract
Zhejiang Wukang sanatorium evolved from Hangchow C. M.S. Hospital, which was founded in 1887. It is the leprosy prevention and treatment center of Zhejiang Province after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Most of the leprosy patients (convalescents)in sanatoriums entered the hospital successively in 1960s. Due to the limitation of dapsone monotherapy and the poor living conditions, the convalescents need to receive long-term isolation treatment and engage in collective production. After the implementation of Reform and Opening-up policy, the leprosy patients' health care has been greatly improved. The leprosy prevention and treatment course has been gradually reduced; the widespread knowledge of leprosy gradually freed leprosy patients from the dilemma of being stigmatized. In the post-leprosy era, Wukang sanatorium changed from the original focus on disease treatment to strengthening the psychological construction of patients. Its function changed from isolation and prevention to rest and pension, and the status of leprosy patients changed from "patients" to "convalescents" . These changes reflect the humanistic care and guidance of destigmatization in the process of leprosy isolation and epidemic prevention from prevention to treatment to the aged.

Abstract
The present work aimed at assessing passive, innate, and acquired immunity in piglets from sows supplemented with either organic or inorganic selenium (Se). A total of 12 multiparous pregnant sows were randomly allocated to three groups: selenium-deficient, corn and soy-based diet base diet (BD), 0.3 mg Se/kg as hydroxy-selenomethionine (OH-SeMet), and 0.3 mg Se/kg as sodium selenite (SS). The feeding trial was carried out from gd 84 to weaning on postpartum day 21 (ppd 21). On gd 98 and 105, sows were vaccinated with hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) to assess passive immunity. On ppd 23, weaned piglets were intramuscularly challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to trigger an acute-phase response. On ppd 14, 28, and 35, piglets were vaccinated with ovalbumin (OVA) to assess OVA-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) and dermal hypersensitivity responses. Se levels in piglet plasma, muscle, and liver on ppd 21 were higher in OH-SeMet group. On ppd 2, piglet HEWL-specific IgG levels in OH-SeMet group were significantly increased. IL-10 and haptoglobin (HP) levels in OH-SeMet group were significantly increased 2 h and 48 h post-LPS simulation, respectively. The OVA-specific IgG levels in BD group were significantly higher than the other two groups, and the IL-4 concentration following whole blood ex vivo challenge with either OVA or mitogen was significantly increased in OH-SeMet group. OVA-specific skin swelling was lower in OH-SeMet and SS groups at 3 h and 6 h. This suggests that sow supplementation with OH-SeMet enhances mainly passive immunity through IgG maternal transfer and can influence piglet innate and acquired immunity.

Abstract
Precise natural anti-oxidative compounds have facilitated the research of infertile gametes and the development of novel bio-therapeutics, especially the molecules that are based on the reduction of oxidative stress, such as L-carnitine (LC). In addition to, the defect in the functioning of sperm mitochondrial and the decreasing seminal antioxidant ability due to aging, its essential role in permitting the mitochondrial import and oxidation of long chain fatty acids is worthy. Therefore, current study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary LC on semen quality, seminal antioxidant activity, and their implications for the fertility in aged cocks for 12 wk. Supplementation of the feed with two different doses of LC (50 and 150 mg/kg body weight/day) for 12 wk showed significantly increased in the reproductive activity of cock, in comparison to the control group. Seminal analysis showed that supplementation of LC significantly increased (P < 0.05) the sperm motility, concentration, livability, semen quality factor, seminal malondialdehyde concentration, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activities. In addition, addition of LC significantly increased (P < 0.05) the plasma concentration of testosterone and prostaglandin E2 but posed no significant effect on the concentration of follicle-stimulating hormone. Furthermore, the findings of artificial insemination showed significant increased (P < 0.05) in the percentage of fertility in LC groups, while the percentage hatchability and mortality remained unchanged. Immunohistochemistry analysis revealed that LC significantly increased (P < 0.05) the testicular immunopositivity of MT1 and MT2. Moreover, the administration of LC to the aged cocks enhanced (P < 0.05) GnRH1 and GnRHR mRNA levels when compared with untreated cocks. The results of the present study suggest that LC treatment of aged cocks increases the seminal antioxidant enzymes and sexual hormones levels, which may improve the semen quality by increasing the expression of GnRH1 and melatonin receptors (MT1 and MT2) activities. Collectively, LC could be a suitable feed supplementation to increase reproductive activities through enhancing semen quality in aging cocks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Major burn injury is one of the main severe forms of wound which lead to a mass of clinical debilitation, this study was to identify core biomarkers for the recovery of severe burned injury. METHODS Gene expression profiles (GSE19743) from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) was downloaded, followed by background correction, normalization of raw microarray dataset and identification of differential expression genes (DEGs) . Soft clustering of DEGs was used for the screening of gene clusters that with sustained increasing (SIG) and decreasing expression (SDG) profiles along with the recovery process of burned injury. The significantly enriched Gene Ontology (GO) terms and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways of SIGs and SDGs were obtained through the Database for Annotation, Visualization, and Integrated Discovery (DAVID), based on which the miRNA-gene regulation network for SIGs and SDGs were constructed from the miRWalk database. RESULTS Ten clusters were obtained through soft clustering. The SIGs and SDGs were found to be closely associated with the biological processes of immune system. The miRNA-gene regulation network analysis suggested different roles between SIGs and SDGs in the recovery of severe burned injury. Furthermore, a bunch of important biomarkers were identified, which would be helpful in the treatment of burned patients. CONCLUSION Our current findings suggest an interesting molecular link between transcriptional regulation potentially involved in immunosuppressive state after major burn injury, which warrants further exploration for their utilization in the treatment of major burn injury.

Abstract
Toll like receptor 4 (TLR4), eosinophils and mast cells play significant role in host immunity during several pathogenic infections. However in vivo tissue expression of TLR4 and distribution pattern of eosinophils and mast cells in chicken bursa of Fabricius (BF) during Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (STm) infection is poorly studied. Therefore, herein, following immunostaining, we found localization of TLR4 in follicular cortex and medulla and its expression was statistical increased after 36 h and 72 h of STm stimulation. Chromotrope 2R staining revealed that eosinophils were mostly distributed in follicular cortex, inter-follicular spaces and in or around blood vessels and their number in BF were statistical increased after 72 h of STm stimulation. The presence of eosinophils was confirmed using immunostaining with anti-rabbit eosinophil cationic protein antibody. Toluidine blue stained mast cells were mostly distributed in connective tissues between inter-follicular spaces while some were also present in follicular cortex of BF. However, STm stimulation illustrated non-significant effect on the number of mast cells or their de-granulation, instead their number were gradually decreased in BF with advancement in age of chickens. Hence, this study provided novel information about in vivo tissue distribution of TLR4, eosinophils and mast cells in BF during STm infection.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the effect of colorectal cancer screening in the general population in Guangzhou, and provide evidence for the for development of colorectal cancer screening policy and strategy. Methods: The data of colorectal cancer screening in Guangzhou during 2015- 2016 were collected. The participation, the positive rate of fecal occult blood test, the detection rate of colonoscopy and screening effect of colonoscopy were evaluated. Results: A total of 220 834 residents aged 50-74 years received the screening, and the positive rate of the screening was 16.77% (37 040 cases). Colonoscopy was performed for 7 821 cases (21.12%). Colorectal lesions were found in 4 126 cases (52.76%), of which 614 (7.85%) and 73 (0.93%) and 230 (2.94%) were identified as advanced adenoma, severe dysplasia lesions and colorectal cancers, respectively. The detection rates of all colorectal lesions were higher in men than in women (all P<0.01). The diagnostic rate of early lesion was 87.24%, and 99 early cancer cases were found, accounting for 46.26% of the total cases. The overall screening detection rate of colorectal cancer was 104.15/100 000, higher than the incidence rate (81.18/100 000) in colorectal cancer surveillance (P<0.001), but age group <70 years had higher detection rate, age group ≥70 years had higher incidence rate. Conclusions: The colorectal cancer screening strategy in Guangzhou is effective in the detection of the population at high risk, increase the detection rate of colorectal lesions, early diagnosis rate of precancerous lesions and diagnosis rate of early colorectal cancer. The benefit in those aged ≤69 years was more obvious than that in those aged 70-74 years. It is necessary to improve the compliancy of colorectal cancer screening in population at high risk.

Abstract
Increased synthesis of heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) occurs in prokaryotes and eukaryotes in response to physiological, environmental, and chemical exposures, thus allowing the cell survival from fatal conditions. Hsp70 cytoprotective properties may be clarified by its anti-apoptotic function. Boron has been reported to play an essential role in various organ developments and metabolisms. However, it is not known if boron is also able to modulate the Hsp70. In the present study, the actions of boron on ostrich spleen and expression level of Hsp70 were investigated. Thirty healthy ostrich chicks were randomly assigned to six groups: groups I, II, III, IV, V, and VI and fed the basal diet spiked with 0-, 40-, 80-, 160-, 320-, and 640-mg boric acid (BA)/L, respectively, in drinking water. The histomorphological examination in the spleen was done by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. The expression level of Hsp70 was analyzed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and western blotting, and mRNA expression of Hsp70 was investigated by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). In order to investigate apoptosis, TUNEL assay reaction in all treatment groups was analyzed. Our results showed that the histological structure of spleen up to 160 mg/L BA supplementation groups well developed. The Hsp70 expression level first induced at low-dose groups (up to group IV) and then inhibited dramatically in high-dose groups (V and VI) while comparing with the group I (0 mg BA). The TUNEL assay reaction revealed that the cell apoptosis amount was decreased in group IV, but in group V and especially in group VI, it was significantly increased (P < 0.01). Taken altogether, proper dietary boron treatment might stimulate ostrich chick spleen development by promoting the Hsp70 expression level and inhibiting apoptosis, while a high amount of boron supplementation would impair the ostrich spleen structure by inhibiting Hsp70 expression level and promoting cell apoptosis.

Abstract
Endotoxin or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure can cause injury to the respiratory airways and in response, the respiratory epithelia express toll-like receptors (TLRs) in many species. However, its role in the innate immunity in the avian respiratory system is poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of LPS on the chicken trachea and lung. After intraperitoneal LPS or saline injection, the trachea and lungs were harvested at 0, 12, 36 and 72 h (n = 6 at each time point) and histopathologically analysed using haematoxylin and eosin and periodic acid-Schiff staining, while TLR4 expression was determined by immunohistochemistry and secretory Immunoglobulin A (SIgA) levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. After LPS stimulation, we observed a remarkable decrease in the number of goblet cells along with obvious disruption and desquamation of the ciliated epithelium in the trachea, blurring of the boundary between pulmonary lobules, narrowed or indistinguishable lumen of the pulmonary atria and leukostasis in the lungs. Following LPS stimulation, TLR4 protein expression was up-regulated in both the trachea and the lungs and was found on the ciliated columnar cells as well as in the submucosa of the trachea, and in the lungs on parenchymal and immune cells. However, SIgA levels were only up-regulated in the trachea at 12 h following LPS stimulation. Hence, this report provides novel information about the effects of LPS on the microstructure of the lower respiratory tract and it is concluded that its intra-peritoneal administration leads to TLR4-mediated destruction of the tracheal epithelium and pulmonary inflammation along with increased SIgA expression in the tracheal mucosa.

Abstract
A new cyprinid gudgeon, Saurogobio punctatus sp. nov., is described based on specimens collected from the Yangtze River, China. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by differences in both morphology and the cytochrome b (cytb) gene sequence. Numerous minute blackish spots are scattered on dorsal and caudal fins in S. punctatus sp. nov. v. absent in the other seven valid Saurogobio species. The new species can be further distinguished from its congeners by the following unique combination of characters: a dorsal fin with eight branched rays; absence of scales in chest area before pectoral origin; upper and lower lips thick, covered with papillae; and a papillose mental pad approximately triangular. Morphologically, the new species most resembles the Chinese lizard gudgeon Saurogobio dabryi, but the new species lays yellowish adhesive eggs v. white pelagic eggs in S. dabryi. A phylogenetic analysis of all Saurogobio species based on cytb gene sequences indicated that S. punctatus sp. nov was distinctly separated from its congeners, with mean sequence divergence ranging from 12·6 to 21·0%. Therefore, molecular data further supported the distinctiveness of the new species.

Abstract
We investigated the mechanisms that induce atrophy of the chicken bursa of Fabricius (BF) upon lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment in young chicks. LPS treatment resulted in ∼36% decrease in bursal weight within 36 h (P < 0.01). Histological analysis showed infiltration of eosinophilic heterophils and nucleated oval shaped RBCs in or near blood vessels of the BF from LPS-treated chicks. Scanning electron micrographs showed severe erosion and breaks in the mucosal membrane at 12 h and complete exuviation of bursal mucosal epithelial cells at 36 h. We observed decreased cell proliferation (low PCNA positivity) and increased apoptosis (high TUNEL and ssDNA positivity) in the BF 12-72 h after LPS treatment. RNA-seq analysis of the BF transcriptome showed 736 differentially expressed genes with most expression changes (637/736) 12 h after LPS treatment. KEGG pathway analysis identified TLR4-MAPK-NF-κB/AP-1 as the key signaling pathway affected in response to LPS stimulation. These findings indicate LPS activates the TLR4-MAPK-NF-κB/AP-1 signaling pathway that mediates acute atrophy of the chicken bursa of Fabricius by inducing inflammation and apoptosis.

Abstract
Background Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induces acute liver injury and the complex mechanisms include the activation of toll like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathway in many species. However, immuno-pathological changes during TLR4 signaling under LPS stress in acute liver injury is poorly understood in avian species. The present investigation was therefore carried out to evaluate these alterations in TLR4 signaling pathway during acute liver injury in young chickens. Results After intraperitoneal injection of LPS or saline, liver samples were harvested at 0, 2, 6, 12, 24, 36, 72 and 120 h (n = 6 at each time point) and the microstructures were analyzed by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and caspase-3 enzyme activity was assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), single stranded DNA (ssDNA) and TLR4 protein expressions were determined by immunohistochemistry. Gene expressions of PCNA, caspase-3, caspase-8, TLR4 and its downstream molecules were analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). LPS injection induced significantly higher ALT activity, severe fatty degeneration, necrotic symptoms, ballooning degeneration, congestion, enhanced inflammatory cell infiltration in liver sinusoids, decreased proliferation, increased apoptosis and significant up-regulation in TLR4 and its downstream molecules (MyD88, NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-1β and TGF-β) expression at different time points. Conclusions This study indicated that TLR4 signaling and its downstream molecules along with certain cytokines play a key role in acute liver injury in young chickens. Hence, our findings provided novel information about the histopathological, proliferative and apoptotic alterations along with changes in ALT and caspase-3 activities associated with acute liver injury induced by Salmonella LPS in avian species. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of Dendrobium officinale (DO) on D-galactose-induced aging mice. METHODS Aging mice was induced by D-galactose at 0.125 g/kg for 10 weeks through subcutaneous injection except for the negative control group. After 10 days, according to complete random design, the aging modeling mice were randomized into 4 groups: aging control group (10 ML·kg-1·d-1) of distilled water), positive control group (vitamin B6 and ganodema lucidum tablets with a dose of 1 tablet/kg), DO-1 treatment group (DO juice with a dose of 1 g/kg), DO-2 treatment group (DO Polysaccharide with a dose of 0.32 g/kg), 14 mice in each group. All the animals were orally medicated daily for 9 weeks. Cognitive function assessment was performed using the maze test and step-down test. At the end of experiment, the superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) levels in the serum, the SOD, GSH-Px and nitric oxide (NO) levels in the cerebrum, the SOD and catalase (CAT) levels in the liver, the SOD and NO levels in the heart, and the SOD level in the kidney, were determined using commercial kits. The spleen, liver, heart, cerebrum and kidney were excised for histological study. RESULTS Compared to aging control group, DO shortened the time of passing through the maze and prolong the step-down latency of aging mice (P <0.05 or P<0.01). DO markedly up-regulated serum levels of SOD, GSH-Px and T-AOC, and restored SOD levels in the heart, liver, kidney and cerebrum to normal status (P<0.05 or P<0.01). DO at the dose of 1 g/kg also signififi cantly improved the degree of spleen lesions (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS DO had marked anti-aging effect on D-galactose-induced model of aging. The underlying mechanism could be related to modulation on antioxidation system and immune system. The results indicated that DO could potentially be used as natural drugs or functional foods for preventing aging.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the yearly, monthly and habitat-related distribution and their relations with Meriones unguiculatus density in the Hebei Meriones unguiculatus plague foci, from 2001 to 2013. METHODS Data related to Meriones unguiculatus was gathered through the monitoring programs set up at the national and provincial Meriones unguiculatus plague foci in Hebei province, from 2001 to 2013. According to the yearly density of Meriones unguiculatus, criteria set for the three groups under study, were as follows:'high-risk group'-when the rodent density was≥1.00 under rodents/hm(2),'warning group'-when the rodents/hm(2)>rodent density> 0.20,'standard group'-when rodents/hm(2) rodent density≤0.20 rodents/hm(2). Differences of habitats and monthly distribution among the three groups were compared, under the Kruskal-Wallis H rank sum test while their relations were under the multiple correspondence analysis. RESULTS The Meriones unguiculatus densities were higher than 1.00 rodents/hm(2), far above the set national standards, in the monitoring area, between 2001 and 2005. From 2005, though the rodent densities began to decrease, however, figures from 2008 to 2013 were still among 0.20 to 1.00 rodents/hm(2). The distribution of habitats in the three groups showed that the Meriones unguiculatus densities were all different in habitats and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The highest median densities were all in the arable land, with maximum value of high-risk group appeared the highest (20.50 rodents/hm(2)) in the wasteland. Monthly distribution showed that the Meriones unguiculatus densities were different and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05) in the high-risk and standard groups but not statistically significant in the warning group. Data from the multiple correspondence analysis showed that there was a strong aggregation among wasteland, in April and June, while the warning group was associated with weather in July and the arable land. CONCLUSIONS When the density became higher than 1.00 rodents/hm(2), the risk on animal plague increased in Hebei Meriones unguiculatus plague foci. Based on the distribution of Meriones unguiculatus, programs should be set to monitor the rodent in arable land and wasteland, in April and June, to reduce the prevalence of animals plague.

Abstract
This study aimed to discuss the co-suppression of vitamin C-contained composite nano-drug carrier and its drug delivery to nidus in tumor cells. Amphiphilic polymers PLA-block-PAAA and block polymer PLA-PEG4000-Maleimide, PLA-block-PAAA and PLA-PEG4000-Maleimide composite nano-micelles were prepared, and, PLA-block-PAAA polymer-coated Nile red nano-micelle, PLA-block-PAA and PLA-PEG4000-Maleimide composite nano-micelles as well as paclitaxel-carrying composite nano-micelle in different molar ratios were given stability tests. Lastly, PLA-block-PAAA and PLA-PEG4000-Maleimide composite nano-micelle cancer cells and paclitaxel-carrying composite nano-micelle cancer cells were given toxicity tests. Stability tests showed that self stability of PLA-block-PAAA (63/8) nano-micelle was not sufficient; the stability was good when the molar ratio of PLA-block-PAAA and PLA-PEG4000-Maleimide composite nano-micelle was 3:1; paclitaxel-carrying composite nano-micelle had good stability within 48 hours; PAAA segment had an inhibiting effect on C6 cancer cells and paclitaxel-carrying composite nano-micelle had a strong inhibiting effect also on tumors. After 24 hours, with the continuous release of paclitaxel, the tumor inhibiting effect of paclitaxel-carrying composite nano-micelle enhanced gradually, and the controlled-release of drugs had continuous inhibiting effect on tumor cells. Therefore, PAAA segment and paclitaxel had time-postponed synergistic effect. In conclusion, vitamin C-contained composite nanometer drug carrier materials can deliver anti-cancer drugs to nidus and thus inhibit tumor cells.

Abstract
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) maternally expressed 3 (MEG3) is expressed in endothelial cells and involved in angiogenesis and vascular function. It was proposed that MEG3 participates in the process of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) functions in metabolic syndrome (MetS). In this study, the circulating EPCs number and function were decreased in MetS subjects. The MEG3 expression was expressed at a lower level and microRNA-140-5p (miR-140-5p) was expressed at a higher level in circulating EPCs of subjects with MetS. Pioglitazone reversed the alterations of EPCs function and the expression levels of MEG3 and miR-140-5p in EPCs. In bone marrow-derived EPCs exposed to palmitate, down-regulation of miR-140-5p canceled the increase of MEG3 expression level induced by Pioglitazone. Overexpression of MEG3 resulted in the down-regulation of miR-140-5p. The luciferase reporter assay and RIP assay showed that MEG3 targeted miR-140-5p. In addition, the HDAC7 expression levels were regulated by miR-140-5p and MEG3. These findings demonstrated that Pioglitazone up-regulated MEG3 expression to protect EPCs via decreasing miR-140-5p expression and increasing HDAC7 expression in MetS, which may be a novel therapeutic target for preventing and treating MetS.

Abstract
Cyclophosphamide (CP) is a commonly used antitumour and immunosuppressive drug, but it is inevitable that the chemotherapeutic agent may cause long-term or permanent reproductive damage on young male patients through inducing oxidative stress in the testes. Squid ink polysaccharides (SIP), a newly found marine glycosaminoglycon have been proved to have antioxidant capabilities and chemotherapy-protective activities on model animals in our recent investigations. This study was conducted to assess whether or not SIP could protect male mice against gonadotoxicity during CP exposure. Sexually mature male Kunming mice were allocated to one of four groups. CP was abdominally administered at dose of 15 mg/kg body weight to two groups of mice for ten weeks, once a week, one group of mice received SIP at dose of 80 mg/kg body weight by gavage for ten weeks, once a day. The other two groups comprised a vehicle treated group and an SIP treated group. Toxicity of CP and protective activity of SIP on the testes were assessed by: sperm parameters, organ index, testicular antioxidant ability, activities of marker enzymes, sex hormone content, and histopathological features. Data showed CP-induced, serious negative changes on murine sperm parameters, organ index, testicular antioxidant ability, activities of marker enzymes, sexual hormone contents, and histopathological features which were all significantly impaired by SIP. This study found that SIP were demonstrated to offer protective effects against CP-induced toxicity on testes in mice (Tab. 2, Fig. 3, Ref. 29).

Abstract
In previous studies, we first isolated one different protein β-1,3-glucanase using two-dimensional electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry from normal wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and chemical hybridization agent-induced male sterility (CIMS) wheat. In this experiment, β-1,3-glucanase activity and the expression of a callose deposition-related gene, UDP-glucose phosphorylase (UGPase), were determinate in normal, CIMS, and genetic male sterility (GS) wheat. β-1,3-glucanase activity was significantly different between the fertile and sterile lines during callose synthesis and degradation, but there was no difference between CIMS and GS wheat. The UGPase gene of callose deposition was highly expressed in the meiophase and sharply decreased in the tetrad stage. However, the expression of the UGPase gene was significantly different between the fertile and sterile lines. These data indicated that β-1,3-glucanase activity and the expression of the UGPase gene play important roles in the male sterility of wheat. Consequently, pollen mother cells (PMCs) might degenerate at the early meiosis stage, and differences in UGPase gene expression and β-1,3-glucanase activity might eventually result in complete pollen collapse. In addition, the critical period of anther abortion might be the meiosis stage to the tetrad stage rather than what we previously thought, the mononuclear period.

Abstract
CONCLUSION Compared with traditional animal models, the miniature pig may be a better model for biomedical research because its morphology has many similarities with that of humans. OBJECTIVE To investigate the suitability of the miniature pig as an animal model for otological research as regards morphology. METHODS Microdissection of the temporal bone of 10 miniature pigs was performed and recorded on photographs. RESULTS The morphology and measurements of the external, middle, and inner ear, and the lateral recess of the miniature pigs were completed by microdissection. The temporal bone structures, including the external, middle, inner ear, and the lateral recess, were similar in the miniature pig and humans.

Abstract
Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) is reported to not only play multifunctions in pituitary differentiation and tumor formation, stimulating cell differentiation or proliferation, also stimulate pituitary to secret prolactin, growth hormone (GH) and thyroid stimulating hormone, although obvious effect on growth hormone only responded to high-dose bFGF. Since it is well documented that both bFGF and GH correlate closely to tumorigenesis, development and metastasis, so it is necessary to reveal the relationship between the cytokines. In the present report we investigated the effect of bFGF on transcription level of GH gene in GH4 rat pituitary cells as well as the regulatory mechanism with real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. We observed a significant expressional increase of GH gene in GH4 cells stimulated by bFGF, meanwhile phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) was also found in the cells. Further investigation unveiled that PD98059, a specific inhibitor of ERK1/2 signaling pathway markedly impaired the transcriptional increment of GH gene induced by bFGF in the pituitary cells, which indicates that bFGF upregulates GH gene expression through ERK1/2 signaling pathway in GH4 cells. Results may be helpful to elaborate roles of the two cytokines on tumor (Fig. 3, Ref. 25).

Abstract
Eosinophils are a type of thymic stromal cell that are present in the thymus of both humans and mice. They participate in regulating T-cell development under non-pathological conditions. However, studies are scarce regarding the role of eosinophils in the development of the thymus in chickens. Therefore, this study investigated the distribution of eosinophils in normal chicken thymi at different stages of development. Seven thymi were obtained from chickens at days 1, 21 and 35 of development. The distribution of eosinophils in the thymi was analyzed by histological and immunohistochemical techniques using Lendrum's chromotrope 2R method and an antibody against eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP), respectively. Eosinophils were constitutively located in the chick thymus. They were mainly distributed in the thymic corticomedullary junction and medulla, especially around vessels and Hassall's corpuscles, and only a few were in the trabeculae among thymic lobules and around vessels. There were none in the cortex. The number of thymic eosinophils decreased with increasing age (P<0.01). These results indicated that eosinophils comprise a type of thymic stromal cells in the chick, which may regulate thymic development, especially during the early stages of development.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To report the rare case of a patient with complete incus dislocation after trauma showing normal hearing. METHODOLOGY Physical examination, audiometry, CT of temporal bone, and detection during operation. RESULTS The incus had become remotely located in the mastoid cavity, but the patient showed normal hearing because fibrous connections had preserved bony continuity. CONCLUSION This case demonstrates that disruption of the ossicular chain does not always require ossicular reconstruction.

Abstract
Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF or FGF-2), a potent tumorigenic cytokine, improves cells proliferation and angiogenesis in tumor and also plays vital roles in tumor growth, metastasis as well as prognosis. Screening and application of effective cytokines against bFGF tumorigenic activity would be helpful to oncologic therapy. Myostatin, a member of transforming growth factor β superfamily, recently showed an antitumor activity and was reported to induce HeLa cells apoptosis through mitochondrion pathway. The above data raised our assumption that expression level of endogenous bFGF gene may be suppressed by exogenous myostatin in myostatin-treated HeLa cells. To test the hypothesis, myostatin was employed to stimulate HeLa cells and expressional level of endogenous bFGF gene in HeLa cells was detected with real-time RT-PCR and ELISA. Results of the suppressed expression level of bFGF gene in Hela cells implied that myostatin may be regarded as an effective cytokine against bFGF to treat certain cancers (Fig. 3, Ref. 26).

Abstract
RIG-1 signalling is responsible for the detection of cytoplasmic viral RNA molecules. DEXH(Asp-Glu-X-His) box polypeptide 58 (encoded by DHX58) is a negative regulator of the RIG-1 signalling pathway. In human, the DHX58 gene can be upregulated and can inhibit the RIG-1 signalling pathway during viral infection. In this study, porcine DHX58 gene expression patterns were studied. According to our results, the porcine DHX58 gene was upregulated not only by the stimulation of Poly I:C but also by the stimulation of lipopolysaccharides (LPS). One polymorphism (g.4919G>C), detected in the ninth intron,was significantly associated with some blood parameters including the red cell distribution width of 1-day-old pigs and white blood cell counts, lymphocyte absolute counts, and platelet distribution width of 17-day-old pigs (P < 0.05). Moreover, the individuals with the genotype GG have a significantly higher mean white blood cell count than individuals with genotype CC or GC (P < 0.05). Our study indicates that DHX58 is an important gene that is associated with the immune response in swine.

Abstract
A metal, or an alloy, can often exist in more than one crystal structure. The face-centred-cubic and body-centred-cubic forms of iron (or steel) are a familiar example of such polymorphism. When metallic materials are made in the amorphous form, is a parallel 'polyamorphism' possible? So far, polyamorphic phase transitions in the glassy state have been observed only in glasses involving directional and open (such as tetrahedral) coordination environments. Here, we report an in situ X-ray diffraction observation of a pressure-induced transition between two distinct amorphous polymorphs in a Ce(55)Al(45) metallic glass. The large density difference observed between the two polyamorphs is attributed to their different electronic and atomic structures, in particular the bond shortening revealed by ab initio modelling of the effects of f-electron delocalization. This discovery offers a new perspective of the amorphous state of metals, and has implications for understanding the structure, evolution and properties of metallic glasses and related liquids. Our work also opens a new avenue towards technologically useful amorphous alloys that are compositionally identical but with different thermodynamic, functional and rheological properties due to different bonding and structural characteristics.

Abstract
The cry toxin encoding plasmid pHT73 was transferred from Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki KT0 to six B. cereus group strains in three lepidopteran (Spodoptera exigua, Plutella xyllostella and Helicoverpa armigera) larvae by conjugation. The conjugation kinetics of the plasmid was precisely studied during the larval infection using a new protocol. The infections were performed with both vegetative and sporulated strains. However, larval death only occurred when infections were made with spore and toxin preparations. Likewise, spore germinations of both donor and recipient strains were only observed in killed larvae, 44-56 h post-infection. Accordingly, kinetics showed that gene transfer between B. thuringiensis strain KT0 and other B. cereus strains only took place in dead larvae among vegetatively growing bacteria. The conjugational transfer ratios varied among different strain combinations and different larvae. The highest transfer ratio reached 5.83 x 10(-6) CFU/donor between the KT0 and the AW05R recipient in Helicoverpa armigera, and all transconjugants gained the ability to produce the insecticidal crystal. These results indicated that horizontal gene transfer among B. cereus group strains might play a key role for the acquisition of extra plasmids and evolution of these strains in toxin susceptible insect larvae.

Abstract
From the dried fruiting bodies of the mushroom Armillaria luteo-virens, a dimeric lectin with a molecular mass of 29.4 kDa has been isolated. The purification procedure involved (NH(4))(2)SO(4) precipitation, ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, CM-cellulose, and Q-Sepharose, and gel filtration by fast protein liquid chromatography on Superdex 75. The hemagglutinating activity of the lectin could not be inhibited by simple sugars but was inhibited by the polysaccharide inulin. The activity was stable up to 70 degrees C but was acid- and alkali-labile. Salts including FeCl(3), AlCl(3), and ZnCl(2) inhibited the activity whereas MgCl(2), MnCl(2), and CaCl(2) did not. The lectin stimulated mitogenic response of mouse splenocytes with the maximal response achieved by 1microM lectin. Proliferation of tumor cells including MBL2 cells, HeLa cells, and L1210 cells was inhibited by the lectin with an IC(50) of 2.5, 5, and 10 microM, respectively. However, proliferation of HepG2 cells was not affected. The novel aspects of the isolated lectin include a novel N-terminal sequence, fair thermostability, acid stability, and alkali stability, together with potent mitogenic activity toward spleen cells and antiproliferative activity toward tumor cells.

Abstract
During the past decade, the radial x-ray diffraction method using a diamond anvil cell (DAC) has been developed at the X17C beamline of the National Synchrotron Light Source. The detailed experimental procedure used with energy dispersive x-ray diffraction is described. The advantages and limitations of using the energy dispersive method for DAC radial diffraction studies are also discussed. The results for FeO at 135 GPa and other radial diffraction experiments performed at X17C are discussed in this report.

Abstract
The effect of copolymer concentration, temperature, and sodium halides (NaI, NaBr, NaCl, and NaF) on micellization and micellar properties of a poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) amphiphilic copolymer (Pluronic L64: EO13PO30EO13), was examined by different methods such as dye spectral change, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small angle neutron scattering (SANS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), viscosity, and cloud point (CP). Temperature/polymer concentration/salt dependent aggregation behavior of L64 was observed. The data on critical micelle concentration (CMC), critical micelle temperature (CMT), (CP), micelle size, and shape are reported. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) showed temperature dependent changes in C-O-C stretching variation band towards higher wave numbers and broadening of band width during the micellization process; this was attributed to increase in proportion of the anhydrous methyl groups, while the proportion of the hydrated methyl groups was decreased. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) provides CMTs and CPs from the same experiment. CMC values derived from dye spectral change, decrease significantly with the addition of salt. The increases in salt/copolymer concentration lower the onset temperature of micellization (CMT). Halide anions influence both CMT and CP in the order of F- > Cl- > Br- > I- when total salt and copolymer concentration kept constant. SANS results show the increase of inter-micellar interaction due to the increase in temperature/salt concentration; this is supported by viscosity data.

Abstract
A novel magnetic chelator with high adsorption capacity of protein by immobilized metal affinity adsorption was prepared by cerium (IV) initiated graft polymerization of tentacle-type polymer chains with iminodiacetic acid (IDA) chelating group on magnetic particles with hydroxyl groups. The micron-sized magnetic poly(vinyl acetate-divinylbenzene) (PVAc-DVB) particles were prepared by a modified suspension polymerization in the presence of oleic acid-coated magnetite nanoparticles and subsequently modified by ester exchange reaction to introduce functional hydroxyl groups. Bovine hemoglobin (BHb) was selected as a model protein to investigate the adsorption capacity of these magnetic particles. The magnetic particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the magnetic particles had an average size of 5 microm and superparamagnetism with saturation magnetization of 20.0 emu/g at room temperature. The protein adsorption indicated that the graft polymerization of tentacle type polymer chains on the magnetic particles could produce magnetic adsorbents with high adsorption capacity (1428.21 mg/g) and low nonspecific adsorption of protein. The magnetic particles with grafted tentacle polymer chains have potential application in large-scale affinity separation of proteins.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the distribution of chitinase in Bacillus thuringiensis strains, and the enhancing effects of the chitinase-producing B. thuringiensis strains on insecticidal toxicity of active B. thuringiensis strain against Spodoptera exigua larvae. METHODS AND RESULTS The chitinolytic activities of B.thuringiensis strains representing the 70 serotypes were investigated by the whitish opaque halo and the colorimetric method. Thirty-eight strains produced different levels of chitinase at pH 7.0, and so did 17 strains at pH 10.0. The strain T04A001 exhibited the highest production, reaching a specific activity of 355 U ml(-1) in liquid medium. SDS-PAGE and Western blotting showed that the chitinase produced by some B. thuringiensis strains had a molecular weight of about 61 kDa. The bioassay results indicated that the chitinase-producing B. thuringiensis strains could enhance the insecticidal activity of B. thuringiensis strain DL5789 against S. exigua larvae, with an enhancing ratio of 2.35-fold. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that chitinase was widely produced in B. thuringiensis strains and some of the strains could enhance the toxicity of active B. thuringiensis strain. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first investigation devoted exclusively to analyse the distribution of chitinase in B. thuringiensis. It infers that the chitinase produced by B. thuringiensis might play a role in the activity of the biopesticide.
