Abstract
BACKGROUND Survival is a key metric of the effectiveness of a health system in managing cancer. We set out to provide a comprehensive examination of worldwide variation and trends in survival from brain tumors in adults, by histology. METHODS We analyzed individual data for adults (15-99 years) diagnosed with a brain tumor (ICD-O-3 topography code C71) during 2000-2014, regardless of tumor behavior. Data underwent a 3-phase quality control as part of CONCORD-3. We estimated net survival for 11 histology groups, using the unbiased nonparametric Pohar Perme estimator. RESULTS The study included 556,237 adults. In 2010-2014, the global range in age-standardized 5-year net survival for the most common sub-types was broad: in the range 20%-38% for diffuse and anaplastic astrocytoma, from 4% to 17% for glioblastoma, and between 32% and 69% for oligodendroglioma. For patients with glioblastoma, the largest gains in survival occurred between 2000-2004 and 2005-2009. These improvements were more noticeable among adults diagnosed aged 40-70 years than among younger adults. CONCLUSIONS To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the largest account to date of global trends in population-based survival for brain tumors by histology in adults. We have highlighted remarkable gains in 5-year survival from glioblastoma since 2005, providing large-scale empirical evidence on the uptake of chemoradiation at population level. Worldwide, survival improvements have been extensive, but some countries still lag behind. Our findings may help clinicians involved in national and international tumor pathway boards to promote initiatives aimed at more extensive implementation of clinical guidelines.

Abstract
Samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu were brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We analyzed 17 Ryugu samples measuring 1 to 8 millimeters. Carbon dioxide-bearing water inclusions are present within a pyrrhotite crystal, indicating that Ryugu's parent asteroid formed in the outer Solar System. The samples contain low abundances of materials that formed at high temperatures, such as chondrules and calcium- and aluminum-rich inclusions. The samples are rich in phyllosilicates and carbonates, which formed through aqueous alteration reactions at low temperature, high pH, and water/rock ratios of <1 (by mass). Less altered fragments contain olivine, pyroxene, amorphous silicates, calcite, and phosphide. Numerical simulations, based on the mineralogical and physical properties of the samples, indicate that Ryugu's parent body formed ~2 million years after the beginning of Solar System formation.

Abstract
The Hayabusa2 spacecraft investigated the C-type (carbonaceous) asteroid (162173) Ryugu. The mission performed two landing operations to collect samples of surface and subsurface material, the latter exposed by an artificial impact. We present images of the second touchdown site, finding that ejecta from the impact crater was present at the sample location. Surface pebbles at both landing sites show morphological variations ranging from rugged to smooth, similar to Ryugu's boulders, and shapes from quasi-spherical to flattened. The samples were returned to Earth on 6 December 2020. We describe the morphology of >5 grams of returned pebbles and sand. Their diverse color, shape, and structure are consistent with the observed materials of Ryugu; we conclude that they are a representative sample of the asteroid.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Baloxavir marboxil (BM) is a novel drug with a cap-dependent endonuclease inhibitory action for influenza A or B; it is highly safe and requires just a single oral dose. Patients with severe heart failure use implantable ventricular assist device (iVAD) until transplantation, but they have an increased risk of thrombosis development. Their warfarin is administered based on point-of-care testing (POCT) with a strict control of prothrombin time-international normalized ratio (PT-INR). CASE REPORT Here, we report a case of a patient with iVAD whose PT-INR was significantly increased from the target range after BM administration. The patient was a 45-year-old man and transplanted with iVAD; warfarin treatment was started when his PT-INR target range was 3.0-3.5. At home, he frequently self-measured PT-INR by POCT and precisely controlled the warfarin dose. He had a fever, was diagnosed with influenza A and was administered BM 40 mg. Thereafter, his PT-INR continued to increase, reaching 4.8 on day 12 of BM administration, exceeding his target range; warfarin was skipped for 1 day. In this case, based on the history of BM administration and clinical course, the increase in PT-INR could be due to BM. Considering the interaction between warfarin and BM, we suspected a possibility of competition for protein-binding sites. Increased PT-INR in the patient was detected early by POCT and thus severe bleeding was avoided. CONCLUSION Strict monitoring of PT-INR when using BM in patients taking warfarin is of clinical importance.

Abstract
Background Ingestion cases are increasing in elderly persons. Herein, we report a rare case of ingestion of a safety pin by an elderly person. Case presentation The patient was an 87‐year‐old bedridden woman who had fever with left pleural effusion. Chest X‐ray revealed a foreign body, confirmed to be a safety pin, in the cervical esophagus. A contrast multidetector row computed tomography scan revealed that the opened safety pin penetrated the left subclavian artery, leading to the diagnosis of an esophageal foreign body penetrating the left subclavian artery. The safety pin was removed, and the subclavian artery aneurysm caused by the penetration was embolized by interventional radiology. After treatment, she was returned to the nursing home on postoperative day 8. Conclusion Penetration by ingestion of a safety pin is rare; in this case, safe treatment was possible due to a team of certified specialist physicians and surgeons.

Abstract
The discovery of charge-density-wave-related effects in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of cuprates holds the tantalizing promise of clarifying the interactions that stabilize the electronic order. Here, we report a comprehensive resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} finding that charge-density wave effects persist up to a remarkably high doping level of x=0.21 before disappearing at x=0.25. The inelastic excitation spectra remain essentially unchanged with doping despite crossing a topological transition in the Fermi surface. This indicates that the spectra contain little or no direct coupling to electronic excitations near the Fermi surface, rather they are dominated by the resonant cross section for phonons and charge-density-wave-induced phonon softening. We interpret our results in terms of a charge-density wave that is generated by strong correlations and a phonon response that is driven by the charge-density-wave-induced modification of the lattice.

Abstract
A case of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in which a skin biopsy from the tick-bite region was analyzed is reported. The patient was a 72-year-old woman who developed fever and thrombocytopenia after a tick bite. SFTS was diagnosed from polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of a blood sample. Histopathological analysis of a skin biopsy specimen from the tick-bite region showed CD20-positive perivascular and interstitial immunoblastic cells, which were positive to anti-SFTS virus (SFTSV) nucleoprotein antibody. In addition, SFTSV RNA was detected by real-time PCR from this biopsy specimen. Moreover, hemophagocytosis was also found in the tick-bite region. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to analyze the details of the tick-bite region of skin in SFTS, and the first to detect virus-infected cells in the skin. The present findings may help elucidate the mechanisms of entry of SFTSV.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have investigated the effects of omega-3, omega-6 and lithium on suicide-related behaviors separately. This study was performed to comprehensively investigate the effects of naturally absorbed EPA, DHA, arachidonic acid and lithium in relation to suicide attempt and deliberate self-harm, with adjustment for each other. METHODS We analyzed plasma EPA, DHA, arachidonic acid levels and serum lithium levels of 197 patients including 33 patients with suicide attempts, 18 patients with deliberate self-harm, and 146 control patients. RESULTS Multivariate logistic regression analysis with adjustment for age, gender, EPA, DHA, arachidonic acid and log-transformed lithium levels revealed that the negative associations with EPA levels (adjusted OR 0.972, 95% CI 0.947-0.997, p = 0.031) and log-transformed lithium levels (adjusted OR 0.156, 95% CI 0.038-0.644, p = 0.01) and the positive association with DHA levels (adjusted OR 1.026, 95% CI 1.010-1.043, p = 0.002) were significant in patients with suicide attempts than in control patients. The analysis also demonstrated that the positive association with arachidonic acid levels (adjusted OR 1.015, 95% CI 1.005-1.025, p = 0.004) was significant in patients with deliberate self-harm than in control patients. LIMITATIONS The limitations are relatively small number of patients and the effects of demographics of individual patients could not be adjusted for the analyses. CONCLUSIONS The present findings suggest that, as naturally absorbed nutrients, higher EPA and lithium levels may be associated with less suicide attempt, and that higher arachidonic acid levels may be associated with more deliberate self-harm.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several epidemiological studies have shown the inverse association of lithium levels in drinking water and suicide rates; however, it is necessary to perform a clinical study dealing with individual patients. METHODS We analyzed 199 patients including 31 patients with suicide attempts, 21 patients with self-harm, and 147 control patients. All were transferred to a university emergency department suffering from intoxication or injury, were aged 20 or more years, and were alive at the start of the study. The exclusion criteria consisted of suffering from schizophrenia and a past or present history of lithium therapy. These exclusions were applied because it is difficult to determine whether their suicide attempt was induced by the intent to end their life or by psychotic symptoms such as auditory hallucinations, and if the patient had received lithium therapy, the association between the small amount of lithium taken from drinking water and food and serum lithium levels cannot be detected. RESULTS There was a significant difference (p = 0.043) between the three groups whereby patients with suicide attempts had significantly lower lithium levels than control patients (p = 0.012) in males but not females. Multivariate logistic regression analysis with adjustment for age and gender revealed that patients with suicide attempts had significantly lower lithium levels than control patients (p = 0.032, odds ratio 0.228, 95% CI 0.059-0.883). LIMITATIONS The limitations of the present study are the nature of observational research which cannot reveal a causal relationship and the relatively small number of subjects. CONCLUSIONS The present findings suggest that higher serum lithium levels may be protective against suicide attempts in lithium therapy-naive individuals.

Abstract
The relative attention demanded by standing and walking at five velocities on a treadmill were examined by the measurement of probe reaction time (probe-RT). Subjects were 13 healthy men, who were from 21 to 42 years of age (M = 28.3 yr., SD = 7.4). The mean RT value was shortest at the velocity of 4 km/hr. and became longer at treadmill walking speeds above and below 4 km/hr. The mean preferred velocity of subjects obtained from 10-m free walking was 4.85 km/hr. (3.1 to 6.2 km/hr.), which is reasonably close to the optimal velocity of 4.0 km/hr. during treadmill walking. Walking at the optimum velocity calls for extremely low demands for attention, and walking at velocities higher or lower than this requires more attention.

Abstract
Aims To determine the normal values and usefulness of the C1/4 space available for spinal cord (SAC) ratio and C1 inclination angle, which are new radiological parameters for assessing atlantoaxial instability in children with Down syndrome. Patients and Methods We recruited 272 children with Down syndrome (including 14 who underwent surgical treatment), and 141 children in the control group. All were aged between two and 11 years. The C1/4 SAC ratio, C1 inclination angle, atlas-dens interval (ADI), and SAC were measured in those with Down syndrome, and the C1/4 SAC ratio and C1 inclination angle were measured in the control group. Results The mean C1/4 SAC ratio in those requiring surgery with Down syndrome, those with Down syndrome not requiring surgery and controls were 0.63 (standard deviation (sd) 0.1), 1.15 (sd 0.13) and 1.29 (sd 0.14), respectively, and the mean C1 inclination angles were -3.1° (sd 10.7°), 15.8° (sd 7.3) and 17.2° (sd 7.3), in these three groups, respectively. The mean ADI and SAC in those with Down syndrome requiring surgery and those with Down syndrome not requiring surgery were 9.8 mm (sd 2.8) and 4.3 mm (sd 1.0), and 11.1 mm (sd 2.6) and 18.5 mm (sd 2.4), respectively. Conclusion The normal values of the C1/4 SAC ratio and the C1 inclination angle were found to be about 1.2° and 15º, respectively. Cite this article: Bone Joint J 2016;98-B:1704–10.

Abstract
Joubert syndrome (JS) is rare recessive disorders characterized by the combination of hypoplasia/aplasia of the cerebellar vermis, thickened and elongated superior cerebellar peduncles, and a deep interpeduncular fossa which is defined by neuroimaging and is termed the 'molar tooth sign'. JS is genetically highly heterogeneous, with at least 29 disease genes being involved. To further understand the genetic causes of JS, we performed whole-exome sequencing in 24 newly recruited JS families. Together with six previously reported families, we identified causative mutations in 25 out of 30 (24 + 6) families (83.3%). We identified eight mutated genes in 27 (21 + 6) Japanese families, TMEM67 (7/27, 25.9%) and CEP290 (6/27, 22.2%) were the most commonly mutated. Interestingly, 9 of 12 CEP290 disease alleles were c.6012-12T>A (75.0%), an allele that has not been reported in non-Japanese populations. Therefore c.6012-12T>A is a common allele in the Japanese population. Importantly, one Japanese and one Omani families carried compound biallelic mutations in two distinct genes (TMEM67/RPGRIP1L and TMEM138/BBS1, respectively). BBS1 is the causative gene in Bardet-Biedl syndrome. These concomitant mutations led to severe and/or complex clinical features in the patients, suggesting combined effects of different mutant genes.

Abstract
Activities were introduced in Kashiwa city in the Tokyo metropolitan area to correspond to the elevated environmental radiation level after the disaster of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. These were based on a strong cooperation between local governments and experts. Ambient dose rate and radioactivity of foodstuff produced inside of the city have been monitored. Representative ambient dose rates around living environments have almost already become their original levels of the pre-accident because of the decontamination activity, natural washout and effective half-lives of radioactivity. The internal annual dose due to radioactive cesium under the policy of 'Local Production for Local Consumption' is estimated as extremely low comparing the variation range due to natural radioactivity. Systematic survey around a retention basin has been started. All of these latest monitoring data would be one of the core information for the policy making as well as a cost-benefit discussion and risk communication.

Abstract
Case A 64-year-old female was found lying by a river. She was unconscious and her lower body was under water. The patient was transported to the emergency room of our hospital. On arrival, her rectal temperature was 24.6°C. We immediately started rewarming and artificial respiration. Five days after admission, rewarming was completed and she became conscious and could communicate. Initially, she had been injured and examination showed paraplegia. Magnetic resonance imaging of her cervical spine showed no findings indicating bony or ligament injury, but there was a T2 high intensity area at C5/6 and C6/7 levels. The patient was diagnosed with spinal cord injury without radiological abnormality. Outcome At 5 months post-injury, the patient was able to walk without crutches. Conclusion Spinal cord injury might be missed if there are no radiographic abnormalities. Spinal cord injury without radiological abnormality should be considered as a differential diagnosis of accidental hypothermia.

Abstract
AbstractA nine-year-old girl with short stature was referred to the department of pediatrics at Kyushu University. The clinical diagnosis was Turner syndrome; karyotypic analysis performed on peripheral blood, using GTG techniques, demonstrated a 45,X/47,XYY (17:83) mosaicism. Her twin brother, a phenotypically normal male, had the same karyotype; 45,X/47,XYY (3:97) on peripheral blood. Their skin fibroblast karyotypes showed the same mosaicism, ie. 45,X/47,XYY (41:59 and 31:69 respectively). On eleven biochemical genetic markers the twin pair were concordant, thus the likelihood of monozygosity was 0.99527034. In addition, the analysis of variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) markers revealed the likelihood of monozygosity to be 0.99944386. The most plausible explanation of the X/XYY mosaicism was nondisjunction of the Y in the first cleavage division of the 46,XY zygote. A disproportionate rate of cell populations with 45,X and 47.XYY in the twinning process of the X/XYY embryo, especially in the germ lines, would result in discordant sex in twin pairs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE X-linked α-thalassemia/mental retardation syndrome (Mendelian Inheritance in Man, 301040) is one of the X-linked intellectual disability syndromes caused by mutations of the ATRX gene and characterized by male predominance, central hypotonic facies, severe cognitive dysfunction, hemoglobin H disease (α-thalassemia), genital and skeletal abnormalities, and autistic and peculiar behavior. More than 200 patients in the world, including >70 Japanese patients, have been diagnosed with ATR-X syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS We reviewed the brain MRI and/or CT findings of 27 Japanese patients with ATR-X with ATRX mutations retrospectively. RESULTS The findings were categorized into 5 types: 1) nonspecific brain atrophy (17/27); 2) white matter abnormalities, especially around the trigones (11/27); 3) widespread and scattered white matter abnormalities (1/27); 4) delayed myelination (4/27); and 5) severe and rapidly progressive cortical brain atrophy (1/27). CONCLUSIONS This is the first report on a comprehensive study of brain MRI/CT findings of ATR-X syndrome. Our findings suggest that the ATRX protein seems to be involved in normal myelination. The classification will require revisions in the near future, but it will be helpful in establishing the relationship between ATRX mutation and brain development and understanding the ATRX protein function in the brain.

Abstract
AbstractWe prepared composite materials of AgBiTe2 with several contents of Ag2Te small-size grains for applications to thermoelectric devices. By enhancing long-wavelength phonon scattering at the grain boundaries, lattice thermal conductivity (thermal conductivity due to lattice vibrations) decreased 30% and thus the thermoelectric characteristics were significantly improved.

Abstract
We present the first application of pulsed high magnetic fields up to 30 T for neutron diffraction experiments. As the first study, field variations of a couple of magnetic Bragg reflections have successfully been measured in the frustrated antiferromagnet TbB4. The results show that the conventional models fail, and a model, which is a mixture of the XY- and the Ising-type moments, matches for the half-magnetization state. We deduce an interaction that stabilizes an orthogonal moment arrangement as an origin of the unusual magnetization plateaus. Our results demonstrate the powerfulness of the present pulsed magnetic fields neutron diffraction system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The causative gene of the common congenital malformation referred to as CHARGE syndrome is CHD7. Affected individuals often undergo head and neck imaging to assess abnormalities of the olfactory structures, hypothalamus-pituitary axis, and inner ear. We encountered a few children with severe hypoplasia of the basiocciput during a radiologic assessment of patients with CHARGE syndrome. To our knowledge, this anomaly has not been reported. Our purpose was to evaluate the incidence and severity of this anomaly in this syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sagittal MR images of 8 patients with CHARGE syndrome were retrospectively reviewed by 2 radiologists who consensually evaluated the status of the basiocciput of the patients with CHARGE syndrome, as either normal or hypoplastic; and associated anomalies, which include basilar invagination, Chiari type I malformation, and syringomyelia, as either present or absent. The length between the basion (Ba) and the endo-sphenobasion (Es) and between the basion and the exo-sphenobasion (Xs) was measured on midsagittal MR images of the 8 patients and 70 age-matched controls. We searched for trends related to age in the length of Ba-Es and Ba-Xs of the control children by using a matched t test. RESULTS Basioccipital hypoplasia was identified in 7 of the 8 patients with CHARGE syndrome and was severe in 6. Of those, 5 had associated basilar invagination and 1 had Chiari type I malformation with syringomyelia. CONCLUSIONS Basioccipital hypoplasia and basilar invagination are prevalent in patients with CHARGE syndrome.

Abstract
Activating mutations of RAS are frequently observed in subsets of human cancers, indicating that RAS activation is involved in tumorigenesis. Here, we identified and characterized a novel G to T transversion mutation of the K-ras gene at the third position of codon 19 (TTG) which substituted phenylalanine for leucine in 3 primary colon carcinomas. Biological and biochemical activity was examined using transformed NIH3T3 cells expressing mutant or wild-type K-ras. Transformants harboring the K-ras mutation at codon 19 showed proliferative capacity under serum-starved conditions, less contact inhibition, anchorage-independent growth, tumorigenicity in nude mice and elevation of active Ras-GTP levels. These results indicated that this novel mutation possesses high oncogenic activity.

Abstract
To identify phosphotyrosine-containing proteins essential for maintaining the transformed state, we studied the tyrosine phosphorylation profile of temperature-sensitive mutant of Rous sarcoma virus, tsNY68, infected cells (68N7). Shifting the temperature from 39 degrees C (nonpermissive) to 32 degrees C (permissive) markedly increased the expression of phosphotyrosine-containing cell membrane proteins of approximately 40kDa, as assessed by SDS-PAGE. Membrane and nuclear proteins were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and immunoblotted with anti-phosphotyrosine antibody. Proteins showing temperature-dependent changes in phosphorylation profile were subjected to in-gel digestion with trypsin and analyzed by mass spectrometry. Five proteins were identified: heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) A3, hnRNP A2, annexin II, phosphoglycerate mutase 1, and triosephosphate isomerase 1. hnRNP A3 was phosphorylated at serine residues and had both serine and tyrosine phosphorylated sites. These results suggest an important complementary role for proteomics in identifying molecular abnormalities associated with tumor progression that may be attractive candidates for tumor diagnosis.

Abstract
A new actinomycete strain designated MITKK-103 was isolated from the soil of a flowerpot using a humic acid agar medium. The newly isolated strain was able to produce a large amount of actinomycin X2 even under nonoptimized growing conditions and serves as a promising source of this antibiotic. Actinomycin X2 has higher cytotoxicity toward cultured human leukemia (HL-60) cells than does actinomycin D, and it induces cell death via apoptosis. A nearly complete 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequence from the isolate was determined and found to have high identity (98.5-100%) with Streptomyces galbus, Streptomyces griseofuscus, and Streptomyces padanus, indicating that MITKK-103 belongs to the genus Streptomyces. The isolate clustered with species belonging to the S. padanus clade in a 16S-rDNA-based phylogenetic tree and showed 75% overall homology to S. padanus ATCC 25646 in DNA-DNA relatedness analysis. Although the growth of the isolate was somewhat different from the three species mentioned, the strain MITKK-103 most closely resembles S. padanus on the basis of the morphological and phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis, and genotypic data. As such, this is the first report of a strain of S. padanus capable of producing actinomycins.

Abstract
AIM To determine the natural growth pattern of Japanese children with Down's syndrome. METHODS Longitudinal height data of 85 patients (43 males, 42 females) from birth to final height were analyzed. Based on these data, semi-longitudinal standard growth curves and height velocity curves for Down's syndrome were drawn. RESULTS The means +/- SD of final height of males and females with Down's syndrome were 153.2 +/- 5.6 and 141.9 +/- 4.2 cm, respectively. They were -3.0 SD and -2.8 SD for Japanese standards. Mean peak height velocities were 8.9 and 7.5 cm y(-1), and the ages at peak height velocity were 11.6 and 10.2 y for males and females, respectively. CONCLUSION The mean height of patients with Down's syndrome was around -2 SD for normal children before puberty. Their pubertal growth spurt starts about 1 y earlier and their peak height velocity was about 1.3-1.4 cm shorter than for normal children.
