Abstract
Pain is one of the most prevalent and difficult to manage symptoms in cancer patients, and conventional drugs present a range of adverse reactions. The development of β-cyclodextrins (β-CD) complexes has been used to avoid physicochemical and pharmacological limitations due to the lipophilicity of compounds such as p-Cymene (PC), a monoterpene with antinociceptive effects. Our aim was to obtain, characterize, and measure the effect of the complex of p-cymene and β-cyclodextrin (PC/β-CD) in a cancer pain model. Initially, molecular docking was performed to predict the viability of complex formation. Afterward, PC/β-CD was obtained by slurry complexation, characterized by HPLC and NMR. Finally, PC/β-CD was tested in a Sarcoma 180 (S180)-induced pain model. Molecular docking indicated that the occurrence of interaction between PC and β-CD is favorable. PC/β-CD showed complexation efficiency of 82.61%, and NMR demonstrated PC complexation in the β-CD cavity. In the S180 cancer pain model, PC/β-CD significantly reduced the mechanical hyperalgesia, spontaneous nociception, and nociception induced by non-noxious palpation at the doses tested (p < 0.05) when compared to vehicle differently from free PC (p > 0.05). Therefore, the complexation of PC in β-CD was shown to improve the pharmacological effect of the drug as well as reducing the required dose.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer is a major public health problem that imposes limitations on patients being treated. One of the strategies to improve health outcomes in cancer patients and promote the safety of their treatment is the provision of pharmaceutical clinical services (PCS). However, there is no evidence of health outcomes that are influenced by such services. OBJECTIVE Identify the health outcomes influenced by PCS in cancer patients. METHODS A systematic review was performed in the following databases: Cochrane Library, LILACS, PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science, and using the PRISMA Statement In addition to the search, we analyzed the references of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The descriptors used were defined by the MeSH keywords "neoplasms," "pharmacists," and "pharmaceutical services". We analyzed the studies with an observational design published until March 2018 that used PCS and related them with the health outcomes. Two reviewers independently assessed titles, abstracts, and full texts according to the eligibility criteria, and then extracted data and assessed the methodological quality of the studies. RESULTS A total of 658 articles were found in the initial search, of which eight met the inclusion criteria. Six studies evaluated clinical outcomes: four assessed adverse reactions, one identified six barriers that prevented patients' adherence to medication and solved three of these barriers, and two evaluated PCS related to drug-related problems (DRP) in identification and resolution. Four studies identified a humanistic outcome: two evaluated the quality of life of patients on cancer treatment associated with improvement of symptoms, two investigated pain, and two performed a patient satisfaction survey on PCS. This systematic review identified only one study with an economic outcome, addressing the reduction of medical expenses related to the treatment of neutropenia that affects cancer patients. Most of the studies showed good methodological quality. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review identified health outcomes associated with PCS in cancer patients: clinical (adverse drug reaction, DRP resolution, adherence, and pain), humanistic (quality of life and satisfaction), and economic outcomes (reduction of treatment costs for cancer).

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is identified by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the Substantia Nigra pars compacta (SNpc), and is correlated to aggregates of proteins such as α-synuclein, Lewy's bodies. Although the PD etiology remains poorly understood, evidence suggests a main role of oxidative stress on this process. Lippia grata Schauer, known as "alecrim-do-mato", "alecrim-de-vaqueiro", "alecrim-da-chapada", is a native bush from tropical areas mainly distributed throughout the Central and South America. This plant species is commonly used in traditional medicine for relief of pain and inflammation conditions, and that has proven antioxidant effects. We evaluated the effects of essential oil of the L. grata after its complexed with β-cyclodextrin (LIP) on PD animal model induced by reserpine (RES). Behavioral assessments were performed across the treatment. Upon completion the treatment, the animals were euthanized, afterwards their brains were isolated and processed for immunohistochemical and oxidative stress analysis. The LIP treatment delayed the onset of the behavior of catalepsy, decreased the number of oral movements and prevented the memory impairment on the novel object recognition task. In addition, the treatment with LIP protected against dopaminergic depletion in the SNpc and dorsal striatum (STRd), and decreased the α-syn immunoreactivity in the SNpc and hippocampus (HIP). Moreover, there was reduction of the oxidative stability index. These findings demonstrated that the LIP treatment has neuroprotective effect in a progressive parkinsonism model, suggesting that LIP could be an important source for novel treatment approaches in PD.

Abstract
Background Neuroprotection in traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an unmet medical need. Objective We evaluated two agents, aglepristone (progesterone receptor antagonist) and N-salicyloyltryptamine (STP) (activator of Maxi-K channel in GH3 cells), for neuroprotection in Feeney's weight drop model of TBI. Material and Methods Forty-eight male Wistar rats were divided into six groups (n = 8 per group). A battery of six neurobehavioral tests was evaluated at the end of the first week (EO1W), second week (EO2W), and third week (EO3W). In addition, histopathological and immunohistochemistry (BAX, Bcl-2, and M30 Cytodeath) tests were performed at EO3W. Results Aglepristone at 10 mg/kg showed significant neuroprotection compared to control as assessed by Rota-rod test at EO1W, VEFP right paw and 28-point neurobehavioral test at EO2W, MWM test at EO3W, and positive histopathological and IHC findings. Aglepristone at 20 mg/kg showed negative results as assessed by BAX expression, downregulation of Bcl-2, and positive M30 Cytodeath, thereby suggesting toxicity at higher doses. STP 100 mg/kg showed modest neuroprotective activity but failed to show a dose-response relationship at a dose of 50 mg/kg. Conclusion The study shows that progesterone receptor antagonists have neuroprotection at lower doses and toxicity at higher doses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic orofacial pain is a serious public health problem with a prevalence of 7-11% in the population. This disorder has different etiologies and characteristics that make pharmacological treatment difficult. Natural products have been shown to be a promising source of treatments for the management of chronic pain, as an example the terpenes. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of one of these terpenes, d-limonene (LIM - a common monoterpene found in citrus fruits) alone and complexed with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (LIM/HPβCD) in preclinical animal models. METHODS Orofacial pain was induced by the administration of hypertonic saline on the corneal surface, the injection of formalin into the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), or chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (CCI-IoN). The study used male Wistar rats and Swiss mice treated with LIM (50 mg/kg), LIM/HPβCD (50 mg/kg), vehicle (control), gabapentin or morphine, and eyes wiping (induced by hypertonic saline), face rubbing (formalin-induced in TMJ) or mechanical hyperalgesia (provoked by CCI-IoN) were assessed. Additionally, ELISA was used to measure TNF-α, and western blot analysis to assess levels of PKAcα, NFκB, p38MAPK and phosphorylated PKC substrates. Serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine transferase (ALT) were also evaluated. RESULTS LIM and LIM/HPβCD significantly reduced (p < 0.001) corneal nociception and formalin-induced TMJ nociception. In addition, both substances attenuated (p < 0.001) mechanical hyperalgesia in the CCI-IoN model. The antinociceptive effect induced by LIM and HPβCD/LIM was associated with decreased TNF-α levels, downregulation of the NFκB and p38MAPK signalling pathways and reduced PKC substrate phosphorylation and PKA immunocontent. Moreover, the results demonstrated that complexation with HPβCD was able to decrease the therapeutic dose of LIM. CONCLUSION LIM was found to be a promising molecule for the treatment of orofacial pain due to its capacity to modulate some important mediators essential to the establishment of pain, and HPβCD can be a key tool to improve the profile of LIM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Flavonoids are a class of compounds with a wide variety of biological functions, being an important source of new products with pharmaceutical potential, including treatment of skin wounds. PURPOSE This review aimed to summarize and evaluate the evidence in the literature in respect of the healing properties of flavonoids on skin wounds in animal models. STUDY DESIGN This is a systematic review following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. METHODS This was carried out through a specialized search of four databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Embase. The following keyword combinations were used: "flavonoidal" OR "flavonoid" OR "flavonoidic" OR "flavonoids" AND "wound healing" as well as MeSH terms, Emtree terms and free-text words. RESULTS Fifty-five (55) articles met the established inclusion and exclusion criteria. Flavonoids presented effects in respect of the inflammatory process, angiogenesis, re-epithelialization and oxidative stress. They were shown to be able to act on macrophages, fibroblasts and endothelial cells by mediating the release and expression of TGF-β1, VEGF, Ang, Tie, Smad 2 and 3, and IL-10. Moreover, they were able to reduce the release of inflammatory cytokines, NFκB, ROS and the M1 phenotype. Flavonoids acted by positively regulating MMPs 2, 8, 9 and 13, and the Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK, PI3K/Akt and NO pathways. CONCLUSION Flavonoids are useful tools in the development of therapies to treat skin lesions, and our review provides a scientific basis for future basic and translational research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Monoterpenes are one of the most studied plant's secondary metabolites, they are found abundantly in essential oils of aromatic plants. They also have a great range of pharmacological properties, such as antihypertensive, bradycardic, antiarrhythmic and hypotensive. In the face of the burden caused by cardiovascular disease (CVDs) worldwide, studies using monoterpenes to assess their cardiovascular effects have increased over the years. PURPOSE This systematic review aimed to summarize the use of monoterpenes in animal models of any CVDs. METHODS PubMed, SCOPUS, LILACS and Web of Science databases were used to search for articles that used monoterpenes, in any type of administration, to treat or prevent CVDs in animal models. The PRISMA guidelines were followed. Two independent researchers extracted main characteristics of studies, methods and outcomes. Data obtained were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. RESULTS At the ending of the search process, 33 articles were selected for the systematic review. Of these, 17 articles were included in the meta-analysis. A total of 16 different monoterpenes were found for the treatment of hypertension, myocardial infarction, pulmonary hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy and arrhythmia. The main actions include hypotension, bradycardia, vasodilatation, antiarrhythmic, and antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties. From our data, it can be suggested that monoterpenes may be a significant source for new drug development. However, there is still a need to apply these knowledge into clinical research and a long path to pursue before putting them in the market. CONCLUSION The variability of cardiovascular effects demonstrated by the monoterpenes highlighted them as a promising candidates for treatment or prevention of CVDs. Nevertheless, studies that investigate their biological sites of action needs to be further encouraged.

Abstract
Complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (CRPS-1) is a painful syndrome without effective treatment. In order to explore possible new treatments, we used an animal model of CRPS-1 to examine the effects of β-Citronellol (βCT), a monoterpene found in a variety of plants that has been shown to have analgesic effects. We aimed to assess its effects alone, and complexed with β-cyclodextrin (βCD), which has been previously used to enhance the effects of a number of medicines. The βCT-βCD was characterized physiochemically using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and shown to have 80% efficiency. In the animal model, Swiss mice were treated with βCT, βCT-βCD, vehicle, pregabalin or sham and evaluated for hyperalgesia and motor coordination. Inflammatory mediators were measured by Western blot or ELISA and the descending pain pathway by immunofluorescence. βCT was shown to have an anti-hyperalgesic effect (without affecting motor coordination) that reduced inflammatory mediators and activated the descending pain pathway, and these effects were increased with complexation in βCD. Our results showed βCT-βCD to be a promising treatment for CRPS-1.

Abstract
Limonene (LIM) is a monoterpene, which is abundant in essential oils of Citrus fruits peels (Rutaceae). More recently, LIM, as a potential natural anticancer compound, has attracted major attention and exerted a chemopreventive activity, stimulating the detoxification of carcinogenic compounds and limiting tumor growth and angiogenesis in various cancer models. Twenty-six (26) articles were selected based on previously established criteria. Anticancer activity of LIM was related to the inhibition of tumor initiation, growth, and angiogenesis and the induction of cancer cells apoptosis. LIM was able to increase Bax expression, release cytochrome c, and activate the caspase pathway. In addition, LIM increased the expression of p53 and decreased the activity of Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK and PI3K/Akt pathways. LIM also decreased the expression of VEGF and increased the activities of the Man-6-P / IGF2R and TGF-βIIR receptors. These results highlight LIM as an abundant natural molecule with low toxicity and pleiotropic pharmacological activity in cancer cells, targeting various cell-signaling pathways critically involved in the initiation, growth, and chemoresistance of cancer cells.

Abstract
Farnesol (FAR) is a sesquiterpene alcohol with a range of reported biological effects including cardioprotective, antioxidant and antiarrhythmic properties. However, due to its volatility, the use of drug incorporation systems, such as cyclodextrins, have been proposed to improve its pharmacological properties. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate and characterize the cardiovascular effects of FAR alone, and to investigate the antihypertensive effects of FAR complexed with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) in rats. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were measured before and after intravenous administration of FAR (0,5; 2,5; 5 and 7,5 mg/kg) in normotensive rats, and after oral acute administration (200 mg/kg) of FAR and FAR/βCD complex in NG-nitro-L-arginine-methyl-ester (L-NAME) hypertensive rats. In normotensive animals, FAR induced dose-dependent hypotension associated with bradycardia. These effects were not affected by pre-treatment with L-NAME or indomethacin (INDO), but were partially attenuated by atropine. Pre-treatment with hexamethonium (HEXA) only affected hypotension. In the hypertensive rats, FAR/βCD potentialized the antihypertensive effect when compared to FAR alone. Molecular docking experiments demonstrated for the first time that FAR has affinity to bind to the M3 and M2 muscarinic, and nicotinic receptors through hydrogen bonds in the same residues as known ligands. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that FAR induced hypotension associated with bradycardia, possibly through the muscarinic and nicotinic receptors. The inclusion complex with βCD improved the antihypertensive effects of FAR, which can be relevant to improve current cardiovascular therapy using volatile natural components.

Abstract
Information on how coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mortality is related to population characteristics in low- and middle-income countries is still limited. We described the deaths from COVID-19 in Sergipe state, Northeast Brazil, from April 2 to June 27, 2020. For this purpose, we conducted a study composed of (i) a case series study of all deaths due to COVID-19 and (ii) a population-based study to verify the behavior of the mortality and case-fatality rates (CFR) related to COVID-19. Data from 605 deaths due to COVID-19 were used to describe the characteristics of individuals with the disease, as well as the differences in gender, age, and comorbidities. Additionally, population data were extracted to estimate the mortality and CFR by population stratum. We also performed an adjusted CFR analysis including a time lag of 14 days between the onset of symptoms and reporting deaths. Of the 605 patients included in this study, 321 (53.1%) were males and the median age was 67.0 years. Most patients (n = 447, 73.9%) who died from COVID-19 had at least one pre-existing clinical condition. The mortality rate was 29.3 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants and the crude CRF was 2.6% (95% CI 2.4–2.8). CFR was higher in males (3.1%, 95% CI 2.8–3.4; p < 0.001) and people aged ≥60 years (14.2%, 95% CI 13.0–15.6; p = 0.042). About 25% of patients died during the first 24-h post-hospital admission. The adjusted CFR for a 14-day time lag was ~2-fold higher than the crude CFR over the study period.

Abstract
Medicinal plants remain an invaluable source for therapeutics of diseases that affect humanity. Sideritis bilgeriana (Lamiaceae) is medicinal plant used in Turkey folk medicine to reduce inflammation and pain, but few studies scientific corroborates its medicinal use so creating a gap between popular use and scientific evidence. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the pharmacological effects of the methanolic extract of S. bilgeriana (MESB) in rodents nociception models and also performed its phytochemical analysis. Firstly, a screening was carried out that enabled the identification of the presence of phenolic compounds and flavonoids. In view of this, a chromatographic method by HPLC-DAD-UV was developed that made it possible to identify chlorogenic acid and its quantification in MESB. MESB-treated mice (MESB 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, p.o.) reduced mechanical hyperalgesia and myeloperoxidase activity (p < 0.01), and also showed a reduced pain behavior in capsaicin test. In the carrageenan-induced pleurisy test, MESB (100 mg/kg p.o.) significantly reduced the leukocyte (polymorphonuclear) count in the pleural cavity and equally decreased the TNF-α and IL-1β levels (p < 0.001). In the PSNL model, mechanical hyperalgesia was reduced on the first evaluation day and during the 7 days of evaluation compared to the vehicle group (p < 0.001). Thermal hyperalgesia was also reduced 1 h after treatment compared to the vehicle group (p < 0.001) and reversed the loss of force initially displayed by the animals, thus inferring an analgesic effect in the muscle strength test. Analysis of the marrow of these animals showed a decrease in the level of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 (p < 0.001) and factor NF-κB, in relation to the control group (p < 0.05). Moreover, the MESB treatment produced no noticeable side effects, no disturb in motor performance and no signs of gastric or hepatic injury. Together, the results suggests that MESB could be useful to management of inflammation and neuropathic pain mainly by the management of pro-inflammatory mediators (NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6), so reinforcing its use in popular medicine and corroborating the need for further chemical and pharmacological studies for the species.

Abstract
Neuropathic pain develops due to injury to the somatosensory system, affecting the patient's quality of life. In view of the ineffectiveness of the current pharmacotherapy, substances obtained from natural products (NPs) are a promising alternative. One NP that has been discussed in the literature is hecogenin acetate (HA), a steroidal sapogenin with anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activity. However, HA has low water solubility, which affects its bioavailability. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-hyperalgesic activity of pure and complexed hecogenin acetate (HA/βCD) in an animal model of chronic neuropathic and inflammatory pain. The inclusion complex was prepared at a molar ratio of 1:2 (HA:βCD) by the lyophilization method. For the induction of chronic inflammatory pain, the mice received an intraplantar injection of CFA (complete Freund's adjuvant), and were evaluated for mechanical hyperalgesia and for the levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO) in the skin of the paw after eight days of treatment. HA and HA/βCD reduced mechanical hyperalgesia in relation to the vehicle group until the fourth and fifth hours, respectively, in the acute evaluation, with a superior effect of the complexed form over the pure form in the second and third hour after treatment (p < 0.001). In the chronic evaluation, HA and HA/βCD reduced hyperalgesia in relation to the vehicle in the eight days of treatment (p < 0.001). Both pure (p < 0.01) and complexed (p < 0.001) forms reduced myeloperoxidase activity in the skin of the animals' paw. Groups of animals subjected to the same pharmacological protocol were submitted to the partial sciatic nerve ligation (PSNL) model and evaluated for mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia, and cold allodynia. HA and HA/βCD reduced mechanical hyperalgesia until the fourth and sixth hours, respectively, and both reduced hyperalgesia in relation to the vehicle in the chronic evaluation (p < 0.001). HA and HA/βCD also reduced thermal hyperalgesia and cold allodynia (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). The analysis of the spinal cord of these animals showed a decrease in the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 and a reduction in the phosphorylation of NFκB and p38MAPK, as well as a decrease in microglioses compared to the vehicle group. In addition, HA/βCD reduced the nociception induced by intraplantar injection of agonist TRPA1 (p < 0.01) and TRPM8 (p < 0.05). Treatment for eight days with HA and HA/βCD showed no signs of gastric or liver damage. HA and HA/βCD were, therefore, shown to have antinociceptive effects in chronic pain models. Based on our exploration of the mechanisms of the action of HA, these effects are likely to be related to inhibited leukocyte migration, interaction with the TRPA1 and TRPM8 receptors, reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines levels, microglial expression and suppression of NF-κB p65 and p38 MAPK pathway signaling. Therefore, HA/βCD has great potential for use in the treatment of chronic pain.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to estimate the incidence and mortality rates of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Brazilian children and to analyze its relationship with socio-economic inequalities in a state-level analysis. Study design This is a nationwide register-based study. Methods To estimate the incidence and mortality rates of COVID-19 in Brazilian children aged 0–19 years, we extracted data of confirmed cases and deaths from the de-identified microdata catalog and official bulletins of the 27 Brazilian states' health department websites until September 3, 2020. Social and economic inequalities were evaluated using the Social Vulnerability Index and Gini coefficient, respectively. The relationship between COVID-19 rates in Brazilian children and socio-economic vulnerability at the state level was analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation. Results Of the 3,998,055 individuals with COVID-19 included in our database, 335,279 (8.4%) were children aged 0–19 years. Eight hundred deaths in children were registered, which accounts for about 0.7% of the deaths related to COVID-19 in the country. There were important differences in the incidence and mortality rates among Brazilian regions, and a correlation between mortality rates and social (ρ = 0.519; P-value = 0.007; effect magnitude: moderate) and economic (ρ = 0.615; P-value < 0.001; effect magnitude: strong) inequalities was found in a state-level analysis. Conclusions This population-based study showed important regional differences in COVID-19 estimates for children in Brazil and a relationship between mortality rates and socio-economic inequalities. The knowledge of sociogeographic differences in the estimates of COVID-19 is crucial to planning societal strategies and local decision-making to mitigate the effects of disease in the pediatric population. Adverse outcomes due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are not only the result of individual clinical characteristics. This population-based study showed a relationship between mortality rates of COVID-19 among Brazilian children and socio-economic inequalities. There are important regional differences in COVID-19 estimates for children in Brazil. The knowledge of sociogeographic differences in the estimates of COVID-19 is crucial to planning societal strategies and local decision-making to mitigate the effects of disease in the pediatric population.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Miconia albicans (Melastomataceae), commonly known in Brazil as "canela-de-velho", is used in folk medicine for treating rheumatoid arthritis and reducing pain and inflammation. THE AIM OF THE CURRENT WORK WAS: to provide data on physicochemical characterization of the drug plant and dried extract from M. albicans leaves, as well as investigate the anti-inflammatory effect and antioxidant stress profile from the standardized dried extract of this species employing different model systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS plant material (dried crushed leaves) was extracted by turboextraction using 50% ethanol (v/v). Different pharmacological techniques were performed to establish quality control parameters of the plant drug, and dried extract of M. albicans (DEMA) was chemically characterized by HPLC-PDA to selection of the chemical marker. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu and AlCl3 colorimetric methods, respectively. Antioxidant potential of the DEMA was investigated by employing different in vitro antioxidant assays, including DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays, ferric reducing antioxidant assay, NO scavenging assay, metal ion (Fe2+) chelating activity and antioxidant capacity by inhibition of lipid peroxidation (TBARS). Finally, anti-inflammatory activity of the DEMA was evaluated using two models of acute inflammation: carrageenan induced inflammation and mechanical hyperalgesia. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION M. albicans leaves, after drying in forced air circulation chamber at ±40 °C for 48 h and crushing in knife mill, presented a moisture content below the maximum allowed for plant drugs (6.4%). The powder of M. albicans was classified as moderately coarse and total ash content was found to be 6.27%. Preliminary phytochemical screening of DEMA revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, leucoanthocyanins and steroids. DEMA had significant higher total phenolic (551.3 mg gallic acid equivalent/g of dried extract) and flavonoid contents (367.19 mg catechin equivalent/g of dried extract). Two major compounds (λ = 340 nm) were identified in DEMA by HPLC-PDA: the flavonoids rutin and quercetin. Rutin content, selected as chemical marker, was determined and found to be 1.16 mg/g dried extract (r = 0.9941). Regarding to antioxidant activity, our results revealed the DEMA exhibited good antioxidant activity on different models. M. albicans treatment also reduced the levels of TNF-α e IL-1β and consequently inflammatory nociception and edema caused by carrageenan injection. Based on previous studies and our results, is possible to suggest a positive correlation between the flavonoids rutin and quercetin and the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities. CONCLUSION Together, these data suggest that M. albicans has the possibility of use in conditions such as arthritis or other joint pain, even needing other work to better consolidate this profile.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Miconia albicans (Sw) Triana (Melastomataceae), a medicinal plant widely used by practitioners of folk medicine in the northeast of Brazil, has been used to treat chronic inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other joint conditions. Oddly, there is little research on the species. AIM OF THE STUDY We aimed to evaluate the anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory profile of the ethanolic leaf extract of M. albicans (EEMA), as well as to perform dereplication and quantification by HPLC-DAD-ESI-/MS/MS. MATERIALS AND METHODS The compounds present in the extracts were identified by HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS. The possible anti-inflammatory effect of EEMA (50 and 100 mg/kg, p.o) was evaluated using the pleurisy model induced by carrageenan and its action on IL-1β and TNF-α levels was also evaluated. The RA model was induced through the intra-articular injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). RESULTS HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS analysis identified 23 compounds, with glycoside flavonoids mainly derived from quercetin, and rutin being the main compounds. EEMA significantly reduced (p < 0.001) leukocyte migration in the pleurisy model and reduced TNF-α and IL-1β levels in pleural lavage (p < 0.001). In the CFA animal model, EEMA significantly reduced the nociceptive and hyperalgesic behaviors demonstrated by the rearing test (p < 0.01 or p < 0.05) and decreased mechanical hyperalgesia (p < 0.001). EEMA produced a significant improvement in mobility in the open-field test (only at the higher dose, p < 0.05). EEMA significantly (p < 0.01) increased hindpaw grip strength. The diameter of CFA-induced ipsilateral knee edema was significantly reduced (p < 0.001) by EEMA, which was related to reduced levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in the joint knee (p < 0.01). No indication of hepatic injury after chronic treatment was found. CONCLUSION Taken together, these results contribute to the chemical and pharmacological knowledge of M. albicans and demonstrated that this medicinal plant appears to be able to mitigate deleterious symptoms of RA, which supports its use in folk medicine.

Abstract
Monoterpenes are non-polar secondary metabolites widely used by industry due to their excellent therapeutic, food-ingredient and cosmetic properties. However, their low solubility in water limits their use. In this sense, cyclodextrins (CDs) have been widely used to solve these technological challenges. Thus, this study aims to use (-)-borneol as a monoterpene model to prepare inclusion complexes between β-CD and hydroxypropyl-β-CD (HP-β-CD) through different ways and characterize them in order to choose the best inclusion method to improve physicochemical properties of monoterpenes. To achieve this goal, the samples were prepared by physical mixture (PM), paste complex (PA) and freeze-drying complex (FD) and then, extensively characterized by thermal analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, size particle, X-ray diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance. The physicochemical results showed that freeze-drying was more effective to form inclusion complexes between (-)-borneol with both CDs. This research highlights the importance of recognizing the best method to prepare inclusion complexes, including food additives as (-)-borneol, to achieve better results in food preparations.

Abstract
The present study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial and modulatory activity of the Turnera subulate methyl extract in isolation or in combination with aminoglycoside antibiotics, using the microdilution method. The Turnera subulata methyl extract was used in isolation in the antibacterial assays and in combination with antibiotics in the modulation assays. All tests were performed in triplicates. The Turnera subulata methyl extract presented both antibacterial and antibiotic-modulatory effects in vitro, in isolation and in association with aminoglycosides. The extract activity depends on the bacterial strain and may be associated with the presence of tannins and flavonols. However, further studies are required to characterize the Turnera subulata potential for the development of new drugs against multiresistant bacteria.

Abstract
Phytol is a diterpene constituent of chlorophyll and has been shown to have several pharmacological properties, particularly in relation to the management of painful inflammatory diseases. Arthritis is one of the most common of these inflammatory diseases, mainly affecting the synovial membrane, cartilage, and bone in joints. Proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-6, and the NFκB signaling pathway play a pivotal role in arthritis. However, as the mechanisms of action of phytol and its ability to reduce the levels of these cytokines are poorly understood, we decided to investigate its pharmacological effects using a mouse model of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritis. Our results showed that phytol was able to inhibit joint swelling and hyperalgesia throughout the whole treatment period. Moreover, phytol reduced myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and proinflammatory cytokine release in synovial fluid and decreased IL-6 production as well as the COX-2 immunocontent in the spinal cord. It also downregulated the p38MAPK and NFκB signaling pathways. Therefore, our findings demonstrated that phytol can be an innovative antiarthritic agent due to its capacity to attenuate inflammatory reactions in joints and the spinal cord, mainly through the modulation of mediators that are key to the establishment of arthritic pain.

Abstract
Peripheral nerve injuries are common conditions that often lead to dysfunctions. Although much knowledge exists on the several factors that mediate the complex biological process involved in peripheral nerve regeneration, there is a lack of effective treatments that ensure full functional recovery. Naringenin (NA) is the most abundant flavanone found in citrus fruits and it has promising neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This study aimed to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration using an inclusion complex containing NA and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD), named NA/HPβCD. A mouse sciatic nerve crush model was used to evaluate the effects of NA/HPβCD on nerve regeneration. Sensory and motor parameters, hyperalgesic behavior and the sciatic functional index (SFI), respectively, improved with NA treatment. Western blot analysis revealed that the levels of p75NTR ICD and p75NTR full length as well phospho-JNK/total JNK ratios were preserved by NA treatment. In addition, NA treatment was able to decrease levels of caspase 3. The concentrations of TNF-α and IL-1β were decreased in the lumbar spine, on the other hand there was an increase in IL-10. NA/HPβCD presented a better overall morphological profile but it was not able to increase the number of myelinated fibers. Thus, NA was able to enhance nerve regeneration, and NA/HPβCD decreased effective drug doses while maintaining the effect of the pure drug, demonstrating the advantage of using the complex over the pure compound.

Abstract
Neuropathic pain (NP) is a difficult condition to treat because of the modest efficacy of available drugs. New treatments are required. In the study we aimed to investigate the effects of the essential oil from Lippia grata alone or complexed in β-cyclodextrin (LG or LG-βCD) on persistent inflammatory and neuropathic pain in a mouse model. We also investigated Ca2+ currents in rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. Male Swiss mice were treated with LG or LG/β-CD (24 mg/kg, i.g.) and their effect was evaluated using an acute inflammatory pleurisy model and nociception triggered by intraplantar injection of an agonist of the TRPs channels. We also tested their effect in chronic pain models: injection of Freund's Complete Adjuvant and partial sciatic nerve ligation (PSNL). In the pleurisy model, LG reduced the number of leukocytes and the levels of TNF-α and IL-1β. It also inhibited cinnamaldehyde and menthol-induced nociceptive behavior. The pain threshold in mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia was increased and paw edema was decreased in models of inflammatory and neuropathic pain. PSNL increased inflammatory protein contents and LG and LG-βCD restored the protein contents of TNF-α, NF-κB, and PKA, but not IL-1β and IL-10. LG inhibited voltage gated Ca2+ channels from DRG neurons. Our results suggested that LG or LG-βCD produce anti-hyperalgesic effect in chronic pain models through reductions in TNF-α levels and PKA, and inhibited voltage-gated calcium channels and may be innovative therapeutic agents for the management of NP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oncological pain is one of the most prevalent and difficult-to-treat symptoms in patients with cancer. p-Cymene (PC) is a monoterpene found in more than 100 different plant species, endowed with various pharmacological properties-particularly antinociceptive. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE PC has antinociceptive effect in a model of oncologic pain due to the activation of the descending inhibitory pathway of pain. STUDY DESIGN A pre-clinical, longitudinal, blind and randomized study. METHODS Male Swiss mice were induced with S180 cells in the right hind paw, then treated daily with PC (12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg, s.c.) and screened for mechanical hyperalgesia, spontaneous nociception, nociception induced by non-noxious palpation, tumor growth, changes in the neuromuscular function and existence of bone degradation in the tumor area. The effect of PC on Ca2+ currents (electrophysiological records), histological and neurochemical changes (immunofluorescence for Fos) were also evaluated. RESULTS PC reduced (p < 0.05) the mechanical hyperalgesia, the spontaneous (p < 0.001) and non-noxious palpation (p < 0.001) nociceptions, not changing the tumor development, neuromuscular function or histopathological aspects of the paw affected. PC reduced Fos expression in the spinal cord (p < 0.001) and increased this expression in the PAG (p < 0.05) and in the NRM (p < 0.01). PC decreased the density of calcium channel currents (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION These results suggest the antinociceptive effect of PC on oncologic pain, probably acting in both ascending and descending pain pathways, and modulating the calcium channel currents in order to exert its effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Arthritis is a syndrome associated with exacerbated inflammation, joint destruction and chronic pain and disability. Chronic treatment of arthritis is associated with several side effects and high abandonment. Therefore, there has been an ongoing search for alternative treatments to overcome these problems. PURPOSE Natural products, which are already widely used for their biological, cosmetic and pharmacotechnic properties, are a possible source for new drugs. Terpenes, a large class of organic compounds produced mainly by plants and trees, are a promising natural product and have already been shown to be effective in treating chronic pain, particularly of an inflammatory origin. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS This review identifies the main terpenes with anti-arthritic activity reported in the last 10 years. A survey was conducted between December 2017 and June 2018 in the PUBMED, SCOPUS and Science Direct databases using combinations of the descriptors terpenes, arthritis and inflammation. RESULTS The results showed that terpenes have promising biological effects in relation to the treatment of arthritis, with the 24 terpenes identified in our survey being effective in the modulation of inflammatory mediators important to the physiopathology of arthritis, such as IL-6, IL-17, TNF-α, NFκB, and COX-2, among others. It is important to note that most of the studies used animal models, which limits, at least in part, the direct translation to humans of the experimental evidence produced by the studies. CONCLUSION Together, our finds suggest that terpenes can modulate the immuno-regulatory and destructive tissue events that underlie the clinical presentation and the progression of arthritis and are worthy of further clinical investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vanillosmopsis arborea Baker has recognized economic value owing to the high content of (-)-α-bisabolol (BISA) in the essential oil of its stem (EOVA). The antinociceptive effect of EVOA has already been demonstrated, and β-cyclodextrin (βCD) is known to improve the analgesic effect of various substances. PURPOSE Thus, we aimed to evaluate the orofacial antinociceptive effect of a complex containing EOVA-βCD in rodents. METHODS EOVA was obtained by simple hydrodistillation, and the essential oil was complexed with βCD. The animals (n = 6/group) were treated orally with EOVA-βCD (10 or 50 mg/kg), or vehicle (control), and subjected to cutaneous orofacial nociception (formalin, capsaicin, acidic saline or glutamate), corneal (hypertonic saline) or temporomandibular (formalin) tests. The expression of FOS protein was analyzed in the spinal cord. Molecular docking was performed using the 5-HT3 and M2 receptors and BISA. RESULTS The oral administration of EOVA-βCD reduced nociceptive behaviour. Moreover, EOVA-βCD decreased FOS expression. The molecular docking study indicates that BISA interacts with 5-HT3 and M2 receptors, indicating the potential mechanism of action of the tested compound. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that EOVA-βCD possesses orofacial antinociceptive effect, indicating that this complex can be used in analgesic drug development.

Abstract
Evidence indicates that oxidative stress has an important role in the onset and progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). Antioxidant agents from natural products have shown neuroprotective effects in animal models of PD. Eplingiella fruticosa is an aromatic and medicinal plant of the Lamiaceae family that include culinary herbs. The essential oil (EPL) has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Cyclodextrins are used to enhances pharmacological profile of essential oil. We obtained the EPL from leaves and complexed with β-cyclodextrin (EPL-βCD). Phytochemical analysis showed as main constituents: β-caryophyllene, bicyclogermacrene and 1,8-cineole. We evaluated the effects of EPL and EPL-βCD (5 mg/kg, p.o. for 40 days) on male mice submitted to the progressive reserpine PD model. Behavioral evaluations, lipid peroxidation quantification and immunohistochemistry for tyrosine hydroxylase were conducted. EPL delayed the onset of catalepsy and decreased membrane lipid peroxides levels in the striatum. EPL-βCD also delayed the onset of catalepsy, reduced the frequency of oral diskynesia, restored memory deficit, produced anxiolytic activity and protected against dopaminergic depletion in the striatum and SNpc. These findings showed that EPL has a potential neuroprotective effect in a progressive PD animal model. Further, EPL-βCD enhanced this protective effects, suggesting a novel therapeutic approach to ameliorate the symptoms of PD.

Abstract
Inflammatory response can be driven by cytokine production and is a pivotal target in the management of inflammatory diseases. Monoterpenes have shown that promising profile as agents which reduce the inflammatory process and also modulate the key chemical mediators of inflammation, such as pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines. The main interest focused on monoterpenes were to develop the analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs. In this review, we summarized current knowledge on monoterpenes that produce anti-inflammatory effects by modulating the release of cytokines, as well as suggesting that which monoterpenoid molecules may be most effective in the treatment of inflammatory disease. Several different inflammatory markers were evaluated as a target of monoterpenes. The proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines were found TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-5, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12 IL-13, IL-17A, IFNγ, TGF-β1 and IFN-γ. Our review found evidence that NF-κB and MAPK signaling are important pathways for the anti-inflammatory action of monoterpenes. We found 24 monoterpenes that modulate the production of cytokines, which appears to be the major pharmacological mechanism these compounds possess in relation to the attenuation of inflammatory response. Despite the compelling evidence supporting the anti-inflammatory effect of monoterpenes, further studies are necessary to fully explore their potential as anti-inflammatory compounds.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic orofacial pain is one of the most common pain conditions experienced by adults. Animal models are often selected as the most useful scientific methodology to explore the pathophysiology of the disorders that cause this disabling pain to facilitate the development of new treatments. The creation of new models or the improvement of existing ones is essential for finding new ways to approach the complex neurobiology of this type of pain. Areas covered: The authors describe and discuss a variety of animal models used in chronic orofacial pain (COFP). Furthermore, they examine in detail the mechanisms of action involved in orofacial neuropathic pain and orofacial inflammatory pain. Expert opinion: The use of animal models has several advantages in chronic orofacial pain drug discovery. Choosing an animal model that most closely represents the human disease helps to increase the chances of finding effective new therapies and is key to the successful translation of preclinical research to clinical practice. Models using genetically modified animals seem promising but have not yet been fully developed for use in chronic orofacial pain research. Although animal models have provided significant advances in the pharmacological treatment of orofacial pain, several barriers still need to be overcome for better treatment options.

Abstract
Vitiligo is a disorder of the skin that causes depigmentation and asymptomatic macules whose exact cause is still unclear. Although its aetiology is not fully elucidated, the main theory of its pathomechanism is that it is associated with the autoimmune process. There is few summarized information about the role of inflammatory mediators, as interleukins, in vitiligo, so our aim was to present a systematic review of the role of interleukins in vitiligo, focusing on interleukins. In this review, we included all studies assessing interleukin levels in vitiligo patients conducted up to June 2017. Quality assessment of these studies was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). The interleukins mainly involved were IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 and IL-17. The studies highlight the crucial role of IL-17 in the onset and progression of the disease, and its synergistic action with IL-2, IL-6 and IL-33. Dysregulated levels of the interleukins were also correlated with the stage of disease, the affected skin surface area, and indicated as the main factor for lymphocyte infiltration found in depigmented regions. These findings illustrate the growing need for new therapies targeting vitiligo and further research into the role of interleukins as an area of particular interest.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Indole-3-guanylhydrazone hydrochloride (LQM01) is a new derivative of aminoguanidine hydrochloride, an aromatic aminoguanidine. METHODS Mice were treated with LQM01 (5, 10, 25 or 50 mg/kg, i.p.), vehicle (0.9% saline i.p.) or a standard drug. The mice were subjected to carrageenan-induced pleurisy, abdominal writhing induced by acetic acid, the formalin test and the hot-plate test. The model of non-inflammatory chronic muscle pain induced by saline acid was also used. Mice from the chronic protocol were assessed for withdrawal threshold, muscle strength and motor coordination. LQM01 or vehicle treated mice were evaluated for Fos protein. RESULTS LQM01 inhibits TNF-α and IL-1β production, as well as leukocyte recruitment during inflammation process. The level of IL-10 in LQM01-treated mice increased in pleural fluid. In addition, LQM01 decreased the nociceptive behavior in the acetic acid induced writhing test, the formalin test (both phases) and increased latency time on the hot-plate. LQM01 treatment also decreased mechanical hyperalgesia in mice with chronic muscle pain, with no changes in muscle strength and motor coordination. LQM01 reduced the number of Fos positive cells in the superficial dorsal horn. This compound exhibited antioxidant properties in in vitro assays. CONCLUSIONS LQM01 has an outstanding anti-inflammatory and analgesic profile, probably mediated through a reduction in proinflammatory cytokines release, increase in IL-10 production and reduction in neuron activity in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord in mice. GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE Beneficial effects of LQM01 suggest that it has some important clinical features and can play a role in the management of 'dysfunctional pain' and inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Fibromyalgia (FM) is a musculoskeletal condition characterized by chronic widespread pain, tenderness and often accompanied by other comorbid conditions such as depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, among others. Now, we aimed to survey the recent patents describing new drugs or alternative therapy for FM. Areas covered: This review covers the therapeutic patents published between 2010 and 2017 from specialized search databases (WIPO, DERWENT, INPI, ESPANET and USPTO) that report the discovery of new drugs or pharmacologic alternative for the treatment of FM. Expert opinion: New therapeutic substances have been proposed in the last seven years. At least as it has been found in our survey, most are still in the pre-clinical phase of the study, and its clinical applicability is unclear. However, other therapeutic approaches were found in patents such as well-established drugs in the market in combination or drug repositioning that combines the 'new analgesic' effects with the old side effects. Hence, it is a safe approach for pharmaceutical market, but poorer to patients who need a radical innovation. So, there is the emerging need for further studies on the safety and efficacy of such therapeutic measures and the search for improvement of side effects, as well as the development of new drugs that are unorthodox for different FM symptoms.

Abstract
Pain treatment is still ineffective in many conditions and remains one of the greatest challenges of modern medicine. Historically, due to the incredible variety of pharmacologically promising natural products (NPs) and the chemical complexity of their compounds, scientists have explored their use as a source of treatment for diseases or symptomatology. Fos protein and its precursor, the gene c-Fos, have been the subject of study in relation to the pathophysiology of pain as a possible tool to aid in its understanding. More recently, it has become a useful tool in the study of NPs with analgesic profile. Thus, this systematic review aimed to investigate the analgesic effect of NPs and derivatives through changes in Fos protein or c-Fos expression in nervous system central. The search terms "analgesics," "Fos," and "drug effects" were used in the databases PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Embase. Forty-six articles were identified. Twenty-five articles investigated Fos expression in the spinal cord, 1 in dorsal root ganglion, 11 in brain areas, and 9 investigated the association between the spinal cord and brain areas. Although Fos protein expression has been used as a tool in the studies of the mechanism of action of pain in relation to NPs with analgesic activity, the associations between brain areas and the spinal cord-and the possible pathways involved-have not yet been fully elucidated and deserve further study.

Abstract
Chronic musculoskeletal pain is one of the main symptoms found in Fibromyalgia with unclear etiology and limited pharmacological treatment. The aim of this study was to complex LIM in β-cyclodextrin (LIM-βCD) and then evaluate its antihyperalgesic effect in an animal model of chronic musculoskeletal pain. Differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy was used for the characterization of the inclusion complex. Male Swiss mice were used for experimental procedures where mechanical hyperalgesia, thermal hyperalgesia, muscular strength, Fos immunofluorescence was studied after induction of hyperalgesia. Mechanism of action was also investigated through tail flick test and capsaicin-induced nociception. Endothermic events and morphological changes showed that the slurry complex method was the best method for the complexation. After induction of hyperalgesia, the oral administration of LIM-βCD (50mg/kg) significantly increased the paw withdrawal threshold compared to uncomplexed limonene. Fos immunofluorescence showed that both compounds significantly decreased the number of Fos-positive cells in the dorsal horn. In nociceptive tests, FLU was able to reverse the antinociceptive effect of LIM-βCD. After intraplantar administration of capsaicin, LIM was able to significantly decrease time to lick. LIM-βCD has antihyperalgesic action superior to its uncomplexed form, with possible action in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. These results suggest the possible applicability of LIM, uncomplexed or complexed with βCD, in conditions such as FM and neuropathic pain, for which there are currently only limited pharmacological options.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to its unclear pathophysiology, the pharmacological treatment of fibromyalgia is a challenge for researchers. Studies using medicinal plants, such as those from the genus Lippia, complexed with cyclodextrins (CDs) have shown innovative results. OBJECTIVE The present research intended to evaluate the effect of an inclusion complex containing β-cyclodextrin (βCD) inclusion complex with Lippia grata (LG) essential oil in a chronic musculoskeletal pain model, its central activity and its possible interaction with neurotransmitters involved in pain. METHODS After acid saline-induced chronic muscle pain, male mice were evaluated for primary and secondary hyperalgesia and muscle strength. Moreover, an antagonist assay was performed to assess the possible involvement of the opioidergic, serotonergic and noradrenergic pathways. In addition, Fos protein in the spinal cord was assessed, and a docking study and antioxidant assays were performed. RESULTS The treatment with LG-βCD, especially in the dose of 24mg/kg, was able to significantly decrease (p<0.05) the paw withdrawal and muscle threshold. Furthermore, LG-βCD was shown to affect the opioidergic and serotonergic pathways. There were no significant changes in muscle strength. Fos protein immunofluorescence showed a significant decrease in expression in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. The main compounds of LG showed through the docking study interaction energies with the alpha-adrenergic and μOpioid receptors. In all antioxidant assays, LG exhibited stronger antioxidant activities than LG-βCD. CONCLUSION This study suggested that LG-βCD could be considered as a valuable source for designing new drugs in the treatment of chronic pain, especially musculoskeletal pain.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) have been used as important pharmaceutical excipients for improve the physicochemical properties of the drugs of low solubility as the essential oil of Hyptis martiusii. This oil is important therapeutically, but the low solubility and bioavailability compromises your use. Therein, the aim of this study was to obtain and to characterize physico-chemically the samples obtained by physical mixture (PM), paste complexation (PC) and slurry complexation (SC) of the essential oil Hyptis martiusii (EOHM) in β-CD, and to compare the antibacterial and modulatory-antibiotic activity of products obtained and oil free. The physicochemical characterization was performed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Karl Fischer titration. Additionally, the antibacterial tests were performed by microdilution technique. Thus, it was observed that the PM method showed low complexing capacity, unlike PC and SC in which it was observed the formation of inclusion complexes. In addition, the second stage of the TG/DTG curves showed that SC was the best method inclusion with mass loss of 6.9% over the PC that was 6.0%. The XRD results corroborate with the results above suggesting the formation of new solid phase and the SEM photomicrographs showed the porous surface of the samples PC and SC. The essential oil alone demonstrated an antibacterial and modulatory effect against the S. aureus and the Gram negative strain, respectively. However, the β-CD and the inclusion complex did not demonstrate any biological activity in the performed antibacterial assays.
