Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evaluate the role of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) as a natural carrier for antibiotics delivery through the analysis of drug release and antimicrobial activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS PRF was prepared according to the L-PRF (leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin) protocol. One tube was used as control (without drug), while an increasing amount of gentamicin (0.25 mg, G1; 0.5 mg, G2; 0.75 mg, G3; 1 mg, G4), linezolid (0.5 mg, L1; 1 mg, L2; 1.5 mg, L3; 2 mg, L4), vancomycin (1.25 mg, V1; 2.5 mg, V2; 3.75 mg, V3; 5 mg, V4) was added to the other tubes. At different times the supernatant was collected and analyzed. Strains of E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. mitis, H. influenzae, S. pneumoniae, S. aureus were used to assess the antimicrobial effect of PRF membranes prepared with the same antibiotics and compared to control PRF. RESULTS Vancomycin interfered with PRF formation. Gentamicin and linezolid did not change the physical properties of PRF and were released from membranes in the time intervals examined. The inhibition area analysis showed that control PRF had slight antibacterial activity against all tested microorganisms. Gentamicin-PRF had a massive antibacterial activity against all tested microorganisms. Results were similar for linezolid-PRF, except for its antibacterial activity against E. coli and P. aeruginosa that was comparable to control PRF. CONCLUSIONS PRF loaded with antibiotics allowed the release of antimicrobial drugs in an effective concentration. Using PRF loaded with antibiotics after oral surgery may reduce the risk of post-operative infection, replace or enhance systemic antibiotic therapy while preserving the healing properties of PRF. Further studies are needed to prove that PRF loaded with antibiotics represents a topical antibiotic delivery tool for oral surgical procedures.

Abstract
Long COVID is a complex condition affecting quality of life, with limited therapeutic options. We investigated the occurrence of long COVID in subjects receiving early therapy with monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) or antivirals to reduce the risk of COVID-19 progression. In this retrospective study we enrolled 737 adult patients (aged 65.16 ± 13.46; 361F), who experienced COVID-19 between January 2021 and March 2022. Antiviral or mAbs were administered to symptomatic patients who did not require oxygen therapy or hospital admission for SARS-CoV-2 infection, and who were at high risk of progression to severe disease, as identified by age > 65 years or the presence of comorbidities. Long COVID, defined as newly or persistent long-term symptoms 4 weeks after the onset of the acute illness, was reported in 204 cases (28%). Age (OR 1.03; p < 0.001), gender (OR 1.88; p < 0.001) and at least three comorbidities (OR 3.49; p = 0.049) were directly associated with long COVID; conversely, vaccination (OR 0.59; p = 0.005) and mAbs/antivirals (OR 0.44; p = 0.002) were independently associated with a reduced risk of long COVID. At a propensity-score-matched analysis, the mAbs/antivirals group had a significantly lower occurrence of long COVID in comparison with untreated controls (11% vs. 34%; p = 0.001). In conclusion, mAbs and antivirals administered against the progression of COVID-19 were associated with a reduced risk of long COVID.

Abstract
Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a severe form of tuberculosis. We report the development of fatal TBM in a 2-year-old previously healthy child, suggesting that TBM must be evaluated in children of all ages with non-specific symptoms of central nervous involvement because a diagnostic delay induces a negative prognosis.

Abstract
Vitamin D might play a role in counteracting COVID-19, albeit strong evidence is still lacking in the literature. The present multicenter real-practice study aimed to evaluate the differences of 25(OH)D3 serum levels in adults tested for SARS-CoV-2 (acute COVID-19 patients, subjects healed from COVID-19, and non-infected ones) recruited over a 6-month period (March-September 2021). In a sample of 117 subjects, a statistically significant difference was found, with acute COVID-19 patients demonstrating the lowest levels of serum 25(OH)D3 (9.63 ± 8.70 ng/mL), significantly lower than values reported by no-COVID-19 patients (15.96 ± 5.99 ng/mL, p = 0.0091) and healed COVID-19 patients (11.52 ± 4.90 ng/mL, p > 0.05). Male gender across the three groups displayed unfluctuating 25(OH)D3 levels, hinting at an inability to ensure adequate levels of the active vitamin D3 form (1α,25(OH)2D3). As a secondary endpoint, we assessed the correlation between serum 25(OH)D3 levels and pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) in patients with extremely low serum 25(OH)D3 levels (<1 ng/mL) and in a subset supplemented with 1α,25(OH)2D3. Although patients with severe hypovitaminosis-D showed no significant increase in IL-6 levels, acute COVID-19 patients manifested high circulating IL-6 at admission (females = 127.64 ± 22.24 pg/mL, males = 139.28 ± 48.95 ng/mL) which dropped drastically after the administration of 1α,25(OH)2D3 (1.84 ± 0.77 pg/mL and 2.65 ± 0.92 ng/mL, respectively). Taken together, these findings suggest that an administration of 1α,25(OH)2D3 might be helpful for treating male patients with an acute COVID-19 infection. Further studies on rapid correction of vitamin D deficiency with fast acting metabolites are warranted in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing is mandatory for Bloodstream Infections management in order to establish appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Herein we evaluated new approach based on AST results directly from positive blood cultures, using Microscan WA to carry out rapid phenotypical profile of antibiotic resistance. Our investigations allow to reduce time versus traditional results.

Abstract
The multifunctional role of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in lung diseases is well established. As the lungs are greatly affected in COVID-19, we evaluated serum NSE levels in COVID-19 patients with and without dyspnea. In this study, we evaluated both SARS-CoV-2-infected and uninfected patients aged >18 years who were referred to hospitals in Catanzaro, Italy from March 30 to July 30, 2020. Epidemiological, clinical, and radiological characteristics, treatment, and outcome data were recorded and reviewed by a trained team of physicians. In total, 323 patients (178 men, 55.1% and 145 women, 44.9%) were enrolled; of these, 128 were COVID-19 patients (39.6%) and 195 were control patients (60.4%). Westergren’s method was used to determine erythroid sedimentation rate. A chemiluminescence assay was used for measurement of interleukin-6, procalcitonin, C-reactive protein, and NSE. We detected significantly higher NSE values (P<0.05) in COVID-19 patients than in controls. Interestingly, within the COVID-19 group, we also observed a further significant increase in dyspnea (Dyspnea Scale and Exercise score: 8.2 ± 0.8; scores ranging from 0 to 10, with higher numbers indicating very severe shortness of breath). These data provide the background for further investigations into the potential role of NSE as a clinical marker of COVID-19 progression.

Abstract
The important physiological and pathophysiological roles of intestinal human microbiome (HMB) in human health have been emerging, owing to the access to molecular biology techniques. Herein we evaluated, for the first time, the intestinal HMB through direct hybridization approach using n-counter flex DX technology which bypasses the amplification procedure currently applied by other technologies to study the human microbiome. To this purpose, a clinical study was carried out on fecal samples, recruiting both healthy volunteers (N-FOB) and subjects positive for occult blood (P-FOB). A relevant custom panel of 79 16S rRNA target gene was engineered and 32 of them displayed a variation between the two clusters of subjects. Our findings revealed that bacteria belonging to Proteobacteria have higher distribution in P-FOB describing dysbiosis. Similarly, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes phylum display high distribution in P-FOB. Of interest, the presence of Clostridium difficile that belongs to Firmicutes phylum displayed about 70% of low presence in N-FOB compared to P-FOB subjects. Only one bacterium belonging to the Actinobacteria phylum, the Bifidobacterium bifidum, was present.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The new Coronavirus identified in Whuan at the end of 2019 (SARS-CoV-2) belongs to the Beta Coronavirus genus and is responsible for the new Coronavirus 2019 pandemia (COVID-19). Infected children may be asymptomatic or present fever, dry cough, fatigue or gastrointestinal symptoms. The CDC recommends that clinicians should decide to test patients based on the presence of signs and symptoms compatible with COVID-19. MATERIAL AND METHODS 42 children (the majority < 5 years of age) were referred, to our Pediatric Department, as possible cases of COVID-19 infection. Blood analysis, chest X-ray, and naso-oropharyngeal swab specimens for viral identification of COVID-19 were requested. RESULTS None of the screened children resulted positive for COVID-19 infection. At first presentation, the most frequent signs and symptoms were: fever (71.4%), fatigue (35.7%) and cough (30.9%). An high C-reactive protein value and abnormalities of chest X-ray (bronchial wall thickening) were detected in 26.2% and 19% of patients, respectively. Almost half of patients (45.2%) required hospitalization in our Pediatric Unit and one patient in Intensive Care Unit. CONCLUSIONS Testing people who meet the COVID-19 suspected case definition criteria is essential for clinical management and outbreak control. Children of all ages can get COVID-19, although they appear to be affected less frequently than adults, as reported in our preliminary survey. Further studies are needed to confirm our observations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in vascular wall degradation, and drugs able to modulate MMP activity can be used to prevent or treat aneurysmal disease. In this study, we evaluated the effects of statins on MMP-2, MMP-9, and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in both plasma and tissue in patients with aneurysmal disease. METHODS We performed a prospective, single-blind, multicenter, control group clinical drug trial on 184 patients of both sexes >18 years old with a diagnosis of arterial aneurysmal disease. Enrolled patients were divided into two groups: Group I under statin treatment and Group II not taking statins. In addition, 122 patients without aneurysmal disease and under statin treatment were enrolled as a control group (Group III). The expression of MMPs and NGAL in plasma was evaluated using ELISA, while their expression in endothelial tissues was evaluated using Western blot. RESULTS The ELISA test revealed greater plasma levels (p < 0.01) of MMPs and NGAL in Groups I and II vs. Group III. Western blot analysis showed higher expression (p < 0.01) of MMPs and NGAL in Group II vs. Group I, and this increase was significantly higher (p < 0.01) in patients treated with low potency statins compared to high potency ones. CONCLUSIONS MMPs and NGAL seem to play a major role in the development of aneurysms, and their modulation by statins suggests that these drugs could be used to prevent arterial aneurysmal disease.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of different analytic methods, such as liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EIA), and chemiluminescence immunoassays (CLIA), in order to highlight whether or not there is relative superiority amongst the assays. We analyzed two groups of subjects suffering from headache and two groups of healthy subjects. Design and Methods: We performed a prospective, single-blind single-center control-group study on 220 subjects with migraine. Subjects of both sexes >10 years old and with 12 months’ history of migraine were eligible for the study. As a control group, 120 healthy subjects were chosen by their family physician. Results: LC-MS/MS evaluation documented that in all enrolled subjects (migraine and control groups), the serum vitamin D3 levels were lower with respect to the normal range (30–100 ng/mL), with a mean value of 15.4 ng/mL, without difference between sex. The mean values measured using HPLC-UV, EIA, and CLIA tests such as Liaison® and Architect® did not show significant differences compared to the values obtained using LC-MS/MS. Conclusions: In conclusion, the population generally has low values of the vitamin D3 hormone, and the suggested range should probably be revised. HPLC-UV and CLIA were found to have appropriate analytical values compared to the reference method (LC-MS/MS), so it is possible to suggest their routine use to optimize care.

Abstract
We describe a 67-year-old man with medical history of focal post-stroke seizure and type 2 diabetes mellitus treated with carbamazepine, clobazam, gliclazide, insulin glargine, and omeprazole we visited for the onset in the last 7 days of asthenia, cough with mucus, breathing difficulty, chest pain, and weight loss. After clinical and laboratory tests, pulmonary tuberculosis was diagnosed, and a treatment with isoniazid, ethambutol, pyrazinamide rifampicin, and pyridoxine was started. Therapeutic drug monitoring of tuberculosis treatment documented that all drugs were in normal therapeutic range. Four days after the beginning of the treatment, we documented the improvement of fever, and three days later the patient showed sleepiness, visual disorder and asthenia. Clinical and pharmacological evaluation suggested a carbamazepine toxicity probably related to a drug interaction (Drug Interaction Probability Scale score = 6). The impossibility to switch carbamazepine for another antiepileptic drug, due to a resistant form of seizure, induced the discontinuation of tuberculosis treatment, resulting in the normalization of serum carbamazepine levels in one day (10 µg/ml) and in the worsening of fever, requiring a new clinical and pharmacological evaluation. The titration dosage of carbamazepine and its therapeutic drug monitoring allowed to continue the treatment with both antitubercular drugs and carbamazepine, without the development of adverse drug reactions. To date, tuberculosis treatment was stopped and clinical evaluation, radiology and microbiology assays documented the absence of tubercular infection and no seizures appeared (carbamazepine dosage 800 mg/bid; serum levels 9.5 µg/ml).

Abstract
Critical limb ischaemia (CLI) is the most advanced form of peripheral artery disease (PAD) and it is often associated with foot gangrene, which may lead to major amputation of lower limbs, and also with a higher risk of death due to fatal cardiovascular events. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) seem to be involved in atherosclerosis, PAD and CLI. Aim of this study was to evaluate variations in MMP serum levels in patients affected by CLI, before and after lower limb surgical revascularisation through prosthetic or venous bypass. A total of 29 patients (7 females and 22 males, mean age 73·4 years, range 65-83 years) suffering from CLI and submitted to lower extremity bypass (LEB) in our Institution were recruited. Seven patients (group I) underwent LEB using synthetic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) graft material and 22 patients (group II) underwent LEB using autogenous veins. Moreover, 30 healthy age-sex-matched subjects were also enrolled as controls (group III). We documented significantly higher serum MMPs levels (P < 0·01) in patients with CLI (groups I and II) with respect to control group (group III). Finally, five patients with CLI (17·2%) showed poor outcomes (major amputations or death), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test showed very high levels of MMP-1 and MMP-8. MMP serum levels seem to be able to predict the clinical outcomes of patients with CLI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We report a man with septic olecranon bursitis who had an early development of meningitis. CASE SUMMARY A 74-year-old man presented to the emergency room with malaise, headache, mental confusion, a fever unsuccessfully treated with oral NSAIDs and ice, and with a 10-day history of pain and swelling in his right elbow. Clinical and laboratory evaluation excluded other causes and microbiological evaluation documented a S. agalactiae infection. Antibiotic treatment induced a rapid improvement, without the development of side effects. CONCLUSION This is the first report on olecranon bursitis and concomitant meningitis related to S. agalactiae infection.

Abstract
Chronic venous ulcer (CVU) represents a dreaded complication of chronic venous disease (CVD). The onset of infection may further delay the already precarious healing process in such lesions. Some evidences have shown that matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved and play a central role in both CVUs and infectious diseases. Two groups of patients were enrolled to evaluate the expression of MMPs in infected ulcers and the levels of inflammatory cytokines as well as their prevalence. Group I comprised 63 patients (36 females and 27 males with a median age of 68·7 years) with infected CVUs, and group II (control group) comprised 66 patients (38 females and 28 males with a median age of 61·2 years) with non-infected venous ulcers. MMP evaluation and dosage of inflammatory cytokines in plasma and wound fluid was performed by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test; protein extraction and immunoblot analysis were performed on biopsied wounds. The first three most common agents involved in CVUs were Staphylococcus aureus (38·09%), Corynebacterium striatum (19·05%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (12·7%). In this study, we documented overall higher levels of MMP-1 and MMP-8 in patients with infected ulcers compared to those with uninfected ulcers that showed higher levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9. We also documented higher levels of interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, IL-8, vascular endothelial growth factor and tumour necrosis factor-alpha in patients with infected ulcers with respect to those with uninfected ulcers, documenting a possible association between infection, MMP activation, cytokine secretions and symptoms. The present results could represent the basis for further studies on drug use that mimic the action of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases in order to make infected CVU more manageable.

Abstract
Introduction: Squamous-cell carcinoma is the second most common form of skin cancer. It can develop on normal skin, actinic keratoses, leukoplakia, and burn scars. The tumor is characterized by remarkable variability at the macroscopic and histopathologic levels. Case report: A 93-year-old woman was admitted to nursing home with a diagnosis of dementia syndrome and squamous cell nodular carcinoma on cheeks and neck region. The physical examination revealed firm, black excrescences with irregular surfaces over both cheekbones, which were roughly the size of hazelnuts. Similar nodules were present with ulcers on other areas of the face. The patient was admitted to the day hospital twice for wide excision of the tumors in the zygomatic region. Later, the neck tumors were removed, and the wound was repaired with a rotation flap after careful control of bleeding. For the latter surgery, the patient was hospitalized for a few days in a geriatric ward to ensure optimal medical care and psychological support. The histological examination revealed ulcerated, well-differentiated squamous-cell carcinoma that extended down to the subcutaneous layer. Shortly after surgery, she returned to the nursing home to resume rehabilitation and group therapy.

Abstract
Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum is a dimorphic fungus endemic in the eastern United States and most countries of Latin America. Sporadic cases of histoplasmosis have been reported in Europe, mainly in immigrants or people returning from highly endemic areas. We report a case of 64-year-old Italian man with endophthalmitis, an unusual presentation of H. capsulatum infection. The patient shows redness, blurred vision, localized pain in the right eye. H. capsulatum was cultured from a vitreous biopsy and yeast forms were seen at histology.

Abstract
Polyomavirus-associated nephropathy (PVAN) has a predilection for kidney rather than for other solid organ transplants such as the liver. Immunosuppression is widely recognized to be a major risk factor for PVAN development. Since end-stage liver disease (ESLD) patients are immunocompromised and immunosuppression is a major cause of BK virus reactivation, we sought to evaluate BK virus replication in patients listed for liver transplantation. From April to October 2010, we enrolled 20 patients listed for liver transplantation. BK virus load was measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction on plasma and urine samples. Viremia occurred in only 1 among 20 patients. We hypothesized that in ESLD patients, the low prevalence of BK virus infection may be related to the prevalent impairment of antibacterial immunity rather than to the viral-specific one. In BK virus reactivation, not only the immunodepressive state itself, but also the specific immunologic mechanisms involved may have a role.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most widely prescribed drugs, and their use can be complicated by the development of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of NSAID-induced ADRs in hospitalised patients in the Clinical Divisions of the Catanzaro and Cosenza hospitals. METHODS We retrospectively analysed NSAID-induced ADRs after evaluating all ADRs recorded by the Clinical Divisions of the Catanzaro and Cosenza hospitals over a 10-year period, from January 1995 to December 2004. RESULTS NSAIDs were found to be responsible for 55.2% of the episodes of ADRs overall. Diclofenac and aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) were the drugs most frequently involved in the development of ADRs, while the skin was the body system most susceptible to NSAID-induced ADRs (43%). We determined that the drug-ADR relationship was probable in 62% of the reports; withdrawal of NSAID therapy led to a resolution of the clinical features of ADRs in 86% of episodes. CONCLUSION NSAID therapy represents a common cause of ADRs in hospitalised patients. Their use should be carefully considered, especially in the presence of polydrug therapy.

Abstract
Headache occurs in a
large proportion of young students.
In this study we evaluated the incidence
of headache in young people,
examined associated factors and
described the drug therapy used. A
structured questionnaire was directly
administered to 2700 students of
secondary schools of Catanzaro. We
recorded that headache symptoms
started between 9 and 12 years of
age. The incidence density was
higher in people living in the city
(84%) and in tobacco and alcohol
users than non–users (p < 0.01). The
most common drugs used were
non–steroidal anti–inflammatory
drugs. In 20% of people, this treatment
induced the development of
chronic headache. These data
showed that morbidity from
headache is often unrecognised and
undertreated. Better management of
headache symptoms and therapy
could reduce the frequency of
headache episodes, with a reduction
of adverse drug reactions.

Abstract
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer death in the world. Traditional chemotherapy for advanced NSCLC is often considered excessively toxic. Recent clinical trials documented that gemcitabine may represent a good therapeutical option in patients with NSCLC. Aim of our research was to retrospectively evaluate the adverse effects induced by gemcitabine in patients with NSCLC from 1 January 1997 to 31 December 2002, in clinical records of Oncology Divisions of "S. Giovanni di Dio" Hospital of Crotone, "Ospedali Riuniti" Hospital of Reggio Calabria, Hospital of Paola, and in Pneumological Oncology Division of "Mariano Santo" Hospital of Cosenza, Italy. Clinical records of patients treated with gemcitabine (1000mgm(-2) on days 1 and 8) were reviewed and following data were obtained: sex and age of the patients, histologic diagnosis and disease stage, World Health Organisation (WHO) performance status and toxic effects induced by gemcitabine. We reported that 71.6% of NSCLC patients (age range 48-77 years; 135 males, 27 females; performance status 0=53, 1=109) were eligible for our study. Side effect of gemcitabine involved gastrointestinal system (nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea) and only in the last cycles (VIII-XI) emopoiethic system (leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and anemia). Grade IV vomiting occurred in three patients, thrombocytopenia in two. Grade III leukopenia was observed in three patients. Other toxicities were mild. None of the patients died during chemotherapy. In conclusion, these data showed that gemcitabine present a very good tolerability in patients with NSCLC. Therefore, it could be considered as a new therapeutic agents to use as first line therapy for this disease.

Abstract
We retrospectively analysed the adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with bronchodilator therapy and reported over a 7-year period, from January 1995 to December 2001, in clinical notes of two Pulmonary division of "Mater Domini" University Hospital and "Pugliese-Ciaccio" Hospital, both located in Catanzaro, Italy. Bronchodilators were responsible for 45 (18.5%) out of 243 episodes of ADRs. Theophylline was the drug most involved in ADRs (53.4%), and skin was the body system most susceptible to ADRs induced by all bronchodilators (47.7%). We determined that the drug-ADR relationship was certain in 73% of the reports; withdrawal of the suspected drug led to recovery in 86% of cases. In conclusion, this retrospective evaluation demonstrated that bronchodilators are a common cause of ADRs in hospitalised patients and, therefore, drug surveillance can successfully identify adverse events related with drug administration in hospitalised patients.

Abstract
We retrospectively analysed adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with antibiotic therapy and reported over a 6-year period, from January 1995 to December 2000, in clinical notes of two Pulmonology Units of "Mater Domini" University Hospital and "Pugliese-Ciaccio" Hospital, both located in Catanzaro, Italy. Antibiotics were responsible for 92 (44.9%) out of 205 episodes of ADRs. In particular, 22 episodes (23.9%) were observed after penicillin G administration, 19 episodes (20.7%) following ceftazidime and cefotaxime administration, 16 episodes (17.4%) after therapy with ampicillin, and 35 reactions (38%) were further reported during treatments with other antibiotics. We determined that the drug-ADR relationship was certain in 63% of the reports; withdrawal of the suspected drug led to recovery in 95% of cases. In conclusion, this retrospective evaluation demonstrated that antibiotics are a common cause of ADRs in hospitalised patients and, therefore, drug surveillance can successfully identify targeted adverse events.

Abstract
Subdural haematoma (SDH) is a known complication of bone marrow transplantation (BMT). A retrospective review of 657 consecutive patients undergoing allogeneic or autologous bone marrow/stem cell transplantation at the Royal Brisbane Hospital between January 1991 and December 1998 is reported. Seventeen cases of subdural haematoma/hygroma were identified (2.6%). Eleven of these (65%) were bilateral. Four required surgical drainage, with two developing re-accumulation of SDH. All cases presented with a headache and eight of these had associated neurological complications. Diagnosis was made predominately by CT scan: however in 25% of cases definitive diagnosis could only be made in MRI studies. An association with intrathecal methorexate-containing conditioning therapy, post lumbar puncture headache, prolonged thrombocytopenia and coagulopathy was noted. In our experience, conservative management with platelet support and correction of coagulopathy achieved resolution of subdural haematoma in most cases, with surgical intervention being reserved for neurological deterioration. Abstract
In less than a decade, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has become the examination of choice in patients with suspected multiple sclerosis (MS). It is the best paraclinical test in assessing dissemination in space of lesions. With serial MRI scans, even dissemination in time can be detected. Using serial Gd-DTPA-enhanced MRI scans, the evolution of lesion can be easily followed. MRI studies in MS patients have contributed to shape current ideas about the pathogenesis of the disease showing that focal breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an early event, if not the first, in the evolution of MS lesions. A number of asymptomatic lesions can be detected by MRI in MS patients, suggesting an ongoing disease activity independent of the clinical appearance. Thus, besides its diagnostic usefulness, MRI will represent the best tool to evaluate effectiveness of treatments in therapeutical trials in MS.

Abstract
Tritiated rifaximin was administered in a single oral dose of 10 mg/kg (specific activity 8.998 microCi/mg) and 100 mg/kg (specific activity 0.786 microCi/mg) to rats. After treatment, at fixed times, the animals were sacrificed and the radioactivity in plasma, urine, feces, and in the principal organs and tissues was measured. The radioactivity present in the feces of the two groups of rats was more than 95% of the administered dose, while the amounts found in the urine ranged between 1.15% and 1.5% of the dose. In the plasma and tissues the radioactivity levels were very low. This evidence confirmed the scanty gastroenteric absorption of L/105. Furthermore, as the radioactivity levels maintained almost the same value during the trial, there was the possibility that the amounts found were in part due to isotopic exchange between tritium of 3H-L/105 and hydrogen of water.
