Abstract
Ammi visnaga (A. visnaga) is an annual herb that has been used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments attributed to the presence of its bioactive compounds. The purpose of this study was to identify and examine the phytochemical properties of the hydroalcoholic extract of A. visnaga using in vitro and in vivo models. Our findings demonstrated that the extract contained a variety of beneficial components, including phenols, flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, saponins, khellin, and visnagin. The total polyphenolic content and total flavonoid content were 23.26 mg/GAE/g dry weight and 13.26 mg/GAE/g dry weight, respectively. In vitro tests demonstrated that the extract possessed antioxidant properties as evidenced by the ability to scavenge free radicals, including DPPH, ABTS, nitric oxide (NO), phosphomolybdate, and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Further, the extract was found to inhibit hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced hemolysis. In a 90-d in vivo study, female Wistar rats were administered 1 g/kg of A. visnaga extract orally resulting in a significant increase in total white blood cell count. Although morphological changes were observed in the liver, no marked alterations were noted in kidneys and spleen. In a female Swiss albino mice model of acetic acid-induced vascular permeability, A. visnaga significantly inhibited extravasations of Evans blue at doses of 0.5 or 1 g/kg with inhibition percentages of 51 and 65%, respectively, blocking tissue necrosis. The extract also demonstrated potential immunomodulatory properties in mice by enhancing antibody production in response to antigens. In silico molecular docking studies demonstrated a strong affinity between khellin or visnagin and immunomodulatory proteins, NF-κB, p52, and TNF-α. These findings suggest that A. visnaga may be considered a beneficial antioxidant with immunomodulatory properties and might serve as a therapeutic agent to combat certain diseases.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the functional results of Phaco-emulsification cataract surgery performed by a Spanish medical mission in Guinea. PATIENTS AND METHOD This is a descriptive cross-sectional prospective collection study from February 1 to April 30, 2019, in patients aged at least 40 years of age operated on by the phaco-E technique. Socio-demographic data, pre- and post-operative visual acuity, causes of poor functional outcomes and patient satisfaction were assessed. Functional outcomes were analyzed in accordasing with WHO guidelines and recommendations for post-operative functional outcomes of cataract surgery. RESULTS We included 400 eyes from 368 patients. The average age was 65.53 years - 8.63 years with a male predominance of 67.4%. Preoperative visual acuity was in 75.75% - sees hands move (VBM). In biometrics, the average power was 21.50 dioptries. The implant installed was 100% adequate. Without correction, visual results were poor in less than 1.5%, limits in 9.5%, and good in 89% following World Health Organization standards. At J30, only 182 patients with 222 eyes had responded to the test with 198 eyes of good result, 18 eyes of average result and 6 eyes of poor results. The causes of poor visual acuities were dominated by ocular pathologies associated with cataracts (4 eyes), intraoperative complications (1 eye) and postoperative complications (1 eye). Almost all patients were satisfied with the functional outcome of the operated eye (354 patients out of 368, or 96.20%). CONCLUSION Phacoemulsification, a technique used by this Spanish medical mission, gives excellent functional results, with few complications. Guinean ophthalmologists will have to make this technique the gold standard in cataract surgery.

Abstract
The use of online remote control for 24/7 behavioural monitoring can play a key role in estimating the environmental status of aquatic ecosystems. Recording the valve activity of bivalve molluscs is a relevant approach in this context. However, a clear understanding of the underlying disturbances associated with behaviour is a key step. In this work, we studied freshwater Asian clams after exposure to crude oil (measured concentration, 167 ± 28 μg·L-1) for three days in a semi-natural environment using outdoor artificial streams. Three complementary approaches to assess and explore disturbances were used: behaviour by high frequency non-invasive (HFNI) valvometry, tissue contamination with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and proteomic analysis. Two tissues were targeted: the pool adductor muscles - retractor pedal muscle - cerebral and visceral ganglia, which is the effector of any valve movement and the gills, which are on the frontline during contamination. The behavioural response was marked by an increase in valve closure-duration, a decrease in valve opening-amplitude and an increase in valve agitation index during opening periods. There was no significant PAH accumulation in the muscle plus nervous ganglia pool, contrary to the situation in the gills, although the latter remained in the low range of data available in literature. Major proteomic changes included (i) a slowdown in metabolic and/or cellular processes in muscles plus ganglia pool associated with minor toxicological effect and (ii) an increase of metabolic and/or cellular processes in gills associated with a greater toxicological effect. The nature of the proteomic changes is discussed in terms of unequal PAH distribution and allows to propose a set of explanatory mechanisms to associate behaviour to underlying physiological changes following oil exposure. First, the first tissues facing contaminated water are the inhalant siphon, the mantle edge and the gills. The routine nervous activity in the visceral ganglia should be modified by nervous information originating from these tissues. Second, the nervous activity in the visceral ganglia could be modified by its own specific contamination. Third, a decrease in nervous activity of the cerebral ganglia close to the mouth, including some kind of narcosis, could contribute to a decrease in visceral ganglia activity via a decrease or blockage of the downward neuromodulation by the cerebro-visceral connective. This whole set of events can explain the decrease of metabolic activity in the adductor muscles, contribute to initiate the catch mechanism and then deeply modify the valve behaviour.

Abstract
Aquatic ecosystems are subject to many anthropogenic disturbances, and understanding their possible impacts is a real challenge. Developing approaches based on the behaviour of bivalve mollusks, an integrating marker of the state of the organisms, and therefore of their environment, is relevant, whether within a natural ecosystem or an ecosystem subject to industrial activities. The main objective of this study was to identify by HFNI Valvometry a reliable and reproducible clam behavioural response in the presence of crude oil in a multistress context. To closely replicate actual field conditions, Corbicula fluminea was exposed in outdoor artificial streams that were subject to natural variations and were continuously fed by fresh water from the Gave de Pau (S.W. France). After a period of 26 days in these artificial streams, the clams (n = 14-16 per condition) were separately exposed for 10 days to crude oil alone, crude oil and barium, crude oil and noise pollution, crude oil and turbidity pulses, barium alone, noise pollution alone, turbidity pulses alone or natural changes alone. The secondary objective was to characterize the accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in 3 tissues (gills, adductor muscles and foot) in clams exposed for 10 days to crude oil alone or under multistress conditions (n = 5 clams per condition) and then to compare the accumulation and behaviour of clams under these conditions. The response of clams to crude oil alone or under multistress conditions was visually and statistically significant and not confounded by the other disturbances tested, despite large variations in water temperature. In the presence of crude oil, the behaviour of clams was characterized by an increase in valve-closure duration, a decrease in valve-opening amplitude and an increase in valve agitation index. In the presence of crude oil, the clam behaviour showed no direct relationship with PAH accumulation in the gills, adductor muscles or foot, although hypothetical mechanisms are discussed. This work supports the growing interest in studying the behaviour of bivalve mollusks in the context of biomonitoring of the aquatic environment surrounding oil facilities.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
The underlying mechanisms of perinatal health inequalities remain under-researched. A possible explanation is inadequate access to healthcare services and suboptimal care for certain groups. To explore this, our study analyses the mothers’ prenatal care trajectories and experiences of care in relation to socioeconomic and migration characteristics.
Methods
A survey of 750 migrant and non-migrant mothers interviewed in 4 maternity wards in Brussels. Based on the adaptation of the Migrant-Friendly Maternity Care Questionnaire, the survey focuses on mothers with a Belgian, North African (NA) and Subsaharan African (SSA) nationality. The data are analysed through descriptive statistics and logistic regression.
Results
This ongoing survey has a high response rate (83%). Preliminary subsample analyses (n = 276) show that the socioeconomic profiles of mothers vary substantially depending on nationality, with mothers from NA generally having a lower level of education, and mothers from SSA being strongly at risk of poverty. SSA women are particularly at risk of starting prenatal care late (32% compared to 4% of Belgians and NAs) and of having less than 7 recommended consultations (25% compared to 6% Belgians and 9% NAs). Low household income and maternal education were also strong predictors of late and infrequent prenatal care. Women from all three nationality groups had the same rate (10%) of planned C-sections, but women from SSA were much more likely to have an emergency c-section (16% vs 7% of Belgians and NAs). Women with a higher household income were less likely to have a c-section at all. Women from both NA and SSA were less likely to always have understood the information given by healthcare professionals. 90% of women with secondary school education understood all the information, compared to 60% of women without it.
Conclusions
Women’s care trajectories and experiences of care vary strongly depending on their nationality and socioeconomic situation.
Key messages
North African and Subsaharan African immigrants in Brussels live in different socioeconomic situations. Their care trajectories and experiences of care also show important differences. Socioeconomic characteristics, in addition to women’s migration status, are important factors affecting women’s perinatal care.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Both low birthweight (LBW) and macrosomia are associated with increased risk health conditions but risk factors of macrosomia among immigrant are understudied. One hypothesis is that some migrant groups at high risk for LBW have correspondingly low risk for macrosomia, and vice-versa. Our objective was to analyze LBW and macrosomia among immigrants according to naturalization, time since naturalization and socioeconomic status in Belgium.
Methods
The data came from the linkage between the Brussels birth and death registers, the national register of migrant trajectories and the social security register for the years 2004-2010. We used logistic regression to estimate the odds ratios of the associations between LBW and macrosomia according to maternal nationality and time since naturalization, taking into account socioeconomic status (SES), parity and maternal age.
Results
Data relate to all singleton births among Belgian, Maghrebi, Sub-Saharan African and Turkish women (n = 76 312). Compared to Belgians, we observed lower risk of LBW but higher risk of macrosomia among Maghrebi women (p < 0.0001). Among Turkish and Sub-Saharan African mothers the risk of LBW is higher than the Belgian (p < 0.001) but the risk of macrosomia is similar to Belgian mother. The results show a U-shaped increase of LBW and decrease of macrosomia with time since naturalization for all migrant groups. Results did not change after adjustment with maternal characteristics and SES. In parallel, we observe an improvement of SES among all migrant groups.
Conclusions
Our results show an increase of LBW rates and a decrease of macrosomia among Maghrebi, Sub-Saharan African and Turkish women with time since naturalization. The risk of macrosomia completely mirrors the risk of LBW for Maghrebi mother but not for Sub-Saharan African and Turkish women. Further studies would help to better explain risk factor and social determinants of macrosomia among immigrant.
Key messages
We observed an increase of LBW but a decrease of macrosomia with time since naturalization among immigrants. Patterns of macrosomia do not completely mirror those of LBW among different migrant groups.

Abstract
Background The association of macrophage activation syndrome and primary Sjögren’s syndrome has been rarely reported in the literature. We report the first observation of this association in Africa, south of the Sahara, and we discuss the diagnosis and therapeutic challenge. Case presentation A 26-year-old Mauritanian and Berber woman was followed for primary Sjögren’s syndrome. After a voluntary cessation of her usual background treatment, she was admitted to our department for an outbreak of her illness. A clinical examination revealed anemic syndrome, peripheral polyarthritis, coughing rales at both pulmonary bases, and fever at 39.5 °C. On biologic examination, there was bicytopenia with anemia at 5.70 g/dl, lymphopenia at 796/mm3, a biological inflammatory syndrome with a sedimentation rate at 137 mm in the first hour, C-reactive protein at 97 mg/l, hyperferritinemia at 1778 mg/l (9 normal value), and hypergammaglobulinemia at 20.7 g/l of polyclonal appearance. The triglycerides were 1.95 g/l (1.4 normal value) and the lactate dehydrogenase level was 491 IU/l (1.5 normal value). Cytological examination of a medullary puncture revealed an image of hemophagocytosis. An infectious screening was negative. Thoracic computed tomography showed non-specific interstitial lung disease. A diagnosis of macrophage activation syndrome complicating primary Sjögren’s syndrome was selected with a probability of 97.2%, according to H-Score. The evolution was favorable under a treatment including etoposide (VP-16). Conclusion Macrophage activation syndrome is a rare entity, rarely reported during primary Sjögren’s syndrome. Its spontaneous evolution is invariably fatal. There is no consensus on therapeutic treatment. Etoposide is a therapeutic option especially in forms refractory to corticosteroid therapy.

Abstract
Background Increasingly studies show that immigrants have different perinatal health outcomes compared to native-born women. Nevertheless, we lack a detailed examination of the combined effects of maternal immigrant trajectory and socioeconomic status on perinatal outcomes. Our objective was to analyze the influence of time since naturalization on low birth weight and maternal socioeconomic status in Belgium. Methods The data came from the linkage between the Brussels birth and death registers, the national register of migrant trajectories and the social security register for the years 2004–2010. We used logistic regression to estimate the odds ratios of the associations between low birth weight (LBW) and time since naturalization, by nationality groups, taking into account socioeconomic status (SES), parity and maternal age. Results Data relate to all singleton births to Belgian, Maghrebi, Sub-Saharan African and Turkish women (n = 76 312). The results show an U-shaped of LBW according to time since naturalization for all migrant groups. LBW declines for women naturalized since less than one year and increases significantly thereafter (p<0.0001). In parallel, we observe an increase of SES among all migrant groups. Compared to Belgians, we found a lower risk of LBW among women from Maghreb (p<0.0001) and this protection is maintained even after 10 years since naturalization. In contrast, the risk of LBW for Sub-Saharan African and Turkish mothers is lower than for Belgians after one year of naturalization but similar to that of Belgians after 10 years of naturalization. Conclusion Our results show that, despite an improvement of their SES, LBW increases among Maghrebi, Sub-Saharan African and Turkish women with time since naturalization. Mothers from Maghreb have lower rates of LBW compared to Belgians and maintain their protection even after more than 10 years of having acquired the Belgian nationality. Additional studies need to be carried out in order to gain a better understanding of the association between migration trajectories, SES and perinatal health of immigrants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Preexposure vaccination against rabies is recommended for some travellers and individuals exposed to the virus through their work. At a cost of at least $150 per intramuscular (IM) dose, few follow this recommendation. In Canada, provided certain conditions are met, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) and the Comité d'immunisation du Québec allow a more economical alternative, intradermal vaccine administration (ID) which uses 1/10 the IM dose. The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility and immunogenicity of intradermal preexposure vaccination. METHODS Students and employees at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine received three doses of ImovaxRage™ (Sanofi Pasteur) inactivated, human diploid cell rabies vaccine at days 0, 7 and 21 or 28. An IM or ID booster dose was administered after two years when indicated. OUTCOMES Among the 159 participants who received three doses, 139 underwent serological testing in the year following vaccination and all achieved protective antibody levels. The antibody level was higher when measured within five weeks of the third dose. When the serological control was performed two years later, 65% of participants had a <0.5 IU/ml titre. Of the 22/30 participants who chose an ID booster, 100% responded and the average antibody titres were multiplied by 11, indicating a strong anamnestic response. DISCUSSION ID rabies vaccination is immunogenic, economic and could be considered for the booster dose. Protective antibodies decline rapidly after primary immunization by ID, so it would seem prudent to perform a serological control one year later on individuals at high risk of occult occupational exposure. An alternative would be to give these individuals a routine ID booster dose one year after primary vaccination, which would simplify initial treatment and reduce related costs (follow-up, blood sampling, serological tests, etc.). The persistence of protective antibodies after this booster dose should be assessed to determine the need for subsequent serological tests and the ideal interval between tests.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prescribers' inappropriate use of the free-text Notes field in new electronic prescriptions can create confusion and workflow disruptions at receiving pharmacies that often necessitates contact with prescribers for clarification. The inclusion of inappropriate patient direction (Sig) information in the Notes field is particularly problematic. OBJECTIVE We evaluated the effect of a targeted watermark, an embedded overlay, reminder statement in the Notes field of an EHR-based e-prescribing application on the incidence of inappropriate patient directions (Sig) in the Notes field. METHODS E-prescriptions issued by the same exact cohort of 97 prescribers were collected over three time periods: baseline, three months after implementation of the reminder, and 15 months post implementation. Three certified and experienced pharmacy technicians independently reviewed all e-prescriptions for inappropriate Sig-related information in the Notes field. A physician reviewer served as the final adjudicator for e-prescriptions where the three reviewers could not reach a consensus. ANOVA and post hoc Tukey HSD tests were performed on group comparisons where statistical significance was evaluated at p<0.05. RESULTS The incidence of inappropriate Sig-related information in the Notes field decreased from a baseline of 2.8% to 1.8% three months post-implementation and remained stable after 15 months. In addition, prescribers' use of the Notes decreased by 22% after 3 months and had stabilized at 18.7% below baseline after 15 months. CONCLUSION Insertion of a targeted watermark reminder statement in the Notes field of an e-prescribing application significantly reduced the incidence of inappropriate Sig-related information in Notes and decreased prescribers' use of this field.

Abstract
We outline an approach to pesticide risk assessment that is based upon surveys of pesticide use throughout West Africa. We have developed and used new risk assessment models to provide, to our knowledge, the first detailed, geographically extensive, scientifically based analysis of pesticide risks for this region. Human health risks from dermal exposure to adults and children are severe enough in many crops to require long periods of up to three weeks when entry to fields should be restricted. This is impractical in terms of crop management, and regulatory action is needed to remove these pesticides from the marketplace. We also found widespread risks to terrestrial and aquatic wildlife throughout the region, and if these results were extrapolated to all similar irrigated perimeters in the Senegal and Niger River Basins, they suggest that pesticides could pose a significant threat to regional biodiversity. Our analyses are presented at the regional, national and village levels to promote regulatory advances but also local risk communication and management. Without progress in pesticide risk management, supported by participatory farmer education, West African agriculture provides a weak context for the sustainable intensification of agricultural production or for the adoption of new crop technologies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study were to recruit and present epidemiological, clinical, histological and therapeutic aspects of primary lymphomas of the urogenital tract in Cameroon. MATERIAL AND METHOD This was a retrospective study over a 10-year period (1999-2008) done on clinical records of the Urological Unit of the Yaounde Central Hospital. From these records, we noted the age and the sex of the patients, their clinical presentation and histological aspect. The patients were treated by surgical resection and chemotherapy. RESULTS Twenty cases were recruited between this period of the study. The age of the patients varied from 6 to 60 years with a mean age of 35 years. There were 19 men and one woman. Eighteen cases involved the testis, one case the kidney and one penile involvement. On histology, there were 19 cases of Burkitt's lymphoma and one case of large B cell lymphoma involving the penis. Three patients had positive syphilis serology and two other were HIV positive. All the patients in this series had a complete remission after treatment but the tumour recurs after 6 to 9 months. CONCLUSION Burkitt's lymphoma is the first malignant tumour of the testis in Cameroonian. Unfortunately, patients consult late, there are no supports for the treatment and this will lead to a poor prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tests available for molecular diagnosis of chlamydial infections detect Chlamydiatrachomatis, but do not find other Chlamydia species associated with genital, ophthalmic, cardiovascular, respiratory or neurological diseases. The routine detection of all Chlamydia species would improve the prognosis of infected people and guide therapeutic choices. AIM To design and validate a sensitive, specific, reproducible, inexpensive and easy-to-perform assay to quantify most Chlamydia species. METHODS Primers and probe were selected using the gene coding for the 16S rRNA. The detection limits were assessed for suspensions of Chlamydia trachomatis, Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia pneumoniae. The performance of this test was compared with that of two commercial kits (Amplicor-Roche and Artus) on 100 samples obtained from children with trachoma. RESULTS The detection capacities for Chlamydia trachomatis of the broad-range real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were similar or slightly better than those obtained with commercial kits (0.2 copies of DNA/microl). Only the broad-range PCR identified specimens containing Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia pneumoniae. The commercial kits and the broad-range assay detected Chlamydia species in 5% and in 11%, respectively, of samples from children with trachoma. CONCLUSIONS This new real-time PCR offers a sensitive, reproducible assay that produces results in <3 h. With panels of quantified Chlamydia species, this real-time PCR can be run with all real-time PCR equipment. Larger trials are needed to confirm the utility of this test in diagnosis and for therapeutic follow-up.

Abstract
Data from polytene chromosome studies on the Anopheles gambiae complex in Mali were reviewed. The banding pattern was successfully scored in 17,705 specimens from 76 sampling sites representing the main ecological strata of the country. Two members of the complex, namely An. arabiensis and An. gambiae, were found widespread and frequently sympatric, with the latter prevalent in most localities. Population genetic analysis of the inversion polymorphisms indicated the existence of panmictic conditions for An. arabiensis only, whereas the parallel study of An. gambiae supported its splitting into at least three reproductive units, characterized by different 2R chromosome arrangements, designated Bamako, Mopti and Savanna. The chromosomal evidence was consistent with the hypothesis of complete reproductive isolation between Bamako and Mopti. Partial isolation between these two taxa and Savanna was suggested by the scoring of hypothetical hybrid 2R heterokaryotypes in various samples, but the actual hybrid origin of these specimens was not confirmed. Different patterns of geographical and seasonal distribution were shown as follows. An. arabiensis prevails in arid savannas (Sahel and Northern Sudan savanna) out of the flooded or irrigated zones; it is able to withstand the most arid conditions of Saharan localities and its breeding might extend throughout the dry season. An. gambiae Savanna and Bamako prevail in relatively humid savannas (Southern Sudan savanna) and their breeding generally occurs only during the rainy season. The Savanna taxon was almost absent in flooded or irrigated zones and in riverine localities; the Bamako taxon is distributed along the upper river Niger and its tributaries. An. gambiae Mopti extends its range in all ecological zones present in Mali including the Sahel and predesertic areas, showing high relative frequencies up to absolute dominance in flooded or irrigated areas; its breeding is highly successful also during the dry season. Rainfall at the sampling sites was found to correlate positively with the frequency of Savanna and negatively with the frequency of Mopti. The remarkable ecological flexibility of the latter was found associated with wide seasonal and geographical variations in its 2R inversion polymorphism bc/u. Higher frequencies of the bc arrangement were recorded both in the Southern localities during the dry season and in the Northern more arid localities during the rainy season. The absence or scarcity of An. arabiensis and An. gambiae Savanna in most flooded or irrigated zones suggests their competitive exclusion by An. gambiae Mopti.

Abstract
Among the sibling species of the Afrotropical Anopheles gambiae complex, the nominal taxon (An. gambiae s.str.) is the major malaria vector. Its bionomics suggest a man-dependent speciation process which involves, in West Africa, various incipient species chromosomally recognized by different combinations of 2R paracentric inversions. One of the most recent evolutionary steps of such a speciation process appears to be the chromosomal form Mopti, which is associated with dry season irrigation in arid zones, and is characterized by a remarkable ecological flexibility related to three 2R alternative arrangements, namely bc, u and +, whose expected karyotypes are found in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The study of this chromosomal polymorphism in samples from a 16-locality transect in Mali shows wide variations and highly significant correlation with both temporal and spatial climatic differences. Mosquitoes homokaryotypic for 2Rbc are the actual dry season and arid areas breeders. The regular rise of 2Rbc frequency, up to fixation, during each dry season, corresponds to the South-North clinal increase of the same arrangement along the transect, from about 30% in the humid savanna to near fixation in the South-Saharan zone. This coherent ecological genetics case provides full support to the hypothesis of the adaptive nature of paracentric inversions. Moreover, the very peculiar system of combinations of contiguous 2R inversions, utilized by Mopti as well as by other chromosomal forms of An. gambiae, suggests a process of polygenic reorganization based on linkage disequilibria and involving the inversions as driving selection units.

Abstract
123 renal tumours, among which 4 benign, were observed in 13 years. Renal tumours have a low incidence in Africa and are mostly seen in young patients. Nephroblastoma is the most frequent of these tumours. The clinical and paraclinical aspects of these tumours have nothing particular but the diagnosis is usually late.

Abstract
Fifteen cases of rupture of the spleen were reported, in which a conservative form of treatment was applied with success. These consisted of 4 splenorrhaphies and 11 partial splenectomies. Collagen (PANGEN) was used in 6 of the cases to buttress the suture. In view of the relatively low incidence of post of complications, the authors are of the opinion that the above described treatment be widely applied in cases of rupture of the spleen, especially in the child where the spleen still plays a vital role.

Abstract
The distribution of responses to hepatitis B virus infection in the rural community of Tip, Senegal, has been determined. Children are rarely persistently infected before two years of age, at which time about 25% of the population are infected. Uninfected members continue to be at risk. Vaccination programs instituted at an early age could prevent infection in most of the population and considerably decrease the risk of chronic liver disease and primary cancer of the liver in adults.

Abstract
The authors report on a series of 14 cases (10 men and 4 women) of epiphrenic diverticula treated surgically over a period of 14 years. Size was variable and the neck was narrow in 7 cases, wide in 5, and very wide in 2. Four patients presented with a double diverticulum. The diverticula are normally found on the right side (9 cases), and underlying dyskinesia is always present, often accompanied by major or minor cardiospasm (11 cases) or reflux from sliding hiatal hernia (3 cases). No manometric exploration was carried out in this series. Management was based on physiopathological considerations - 6 diverticulectomies with 5 myotomies, 6 myotomies with no diverticulectomy. The approach was left thoracic in 7 cases and abdominal in the others. The mortality rate was zero, and functional results are good. They are all the better in that the diverticulectomy, the myotomy and the repair of the gastroesophageal reflux have now been performed.

Abstract
The division of the facial nerve in the West African has been studied on 128 dissections. The point of division and the distribution into "morphological types" are fairly identical to those established in subjects of the white race, with two special features: 80% of the nerves divide above the middle of the Tragion-gonion line. 25% of the nerves are of a "triforked" morphological type. The variations of the cephalic index are in close connection with those of the angle of division of the nerve (brachycephalic: average angle 95 degrees; mesocephalic: 107 degrees; dolichocephalic: 125 degrees). On the other hand, the study of the morphological and physiognomical facial indexes does not show any definitive correlation as regards the place of division and the number of secondary branches.
