Abstract
Introduction 'Meal patterns' refers to eating frequency, snacking, regularity, and timing. Here also including intermittent fasting. The effect of meal patterns on health is inconsistent and when updating the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023 (NNR2023), summarizing the evidence is important. Aims To describe the evidence for the role of meal patterns on bodyweight, body composition, and cardiovascular risk factors (i.e. blood pressure and lipid- and glukose metabolism) in healthy people living with normal weight, overweight, or obesity in all age groups. Methods An initial search in PubMed found 481 reviews, of which 104 were identified based on titles. Of these, 47 were excluded based on title and abstracts. Of the remaining 57 reviews, 16 were included reporting search terms and inclusion/exclusion criteria. In addition, 8 reviews from reference list or known by authors were included. In total, 24 reviews were relevant. Cochrane Library was searched with no results. Results All reviews were rated low or critically low (AMSTAR 2). No consistent findings on eating frequency and body weight or composition were found in children/adolescents or adults. In snacking, mixed results were found, although among adults, some consistent results showed positive associations between snacking and body weight. In regularity, breakfast skipping showed mixed results in children/adolescents on body weight and composition. Among adults, randomized controlled trials on breakfast skipping showed a minor impact on improved weight loss. In prospective studies on timing, lower energy intake during late afternoon/evening was related to less body weight. Intermittent fasting reduced body weight but was not superior to continuous energy restrictions. Cardiovascular risk factors were assessed in a minority of the reviews, and despite some beneficial effects, the evidence was limited. Conclusion Given the overall low to critically low quality of the reviews, the evidence is limited and inconclusive. No consistent results providing evidence for setting recommendations for meal patterns were shown. In this regard, meal patterns may vary within the context of an energy balanced and nutritionally adequate diet.

Abstract
PURPOSE Chaotic eating and purging behavior pose a risk to the metabolic health of women with bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge-eating disorder (BED). This study reports on one-year changes in blood markers of metabolic health and thyroid hormones in women with BN or BED attending two different treatments. METHODS These are secondary analyses from a randomized controlled trial of 16-week group treatment of either physical exercise and dietary therapy (PED-t) or cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). Blood samples collected at pre-treatment, week eight, post-treatment, and at 6- and 12-month follow-ups were analyzed for glucose, lipids (triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), LDL cholesterol (LDL-c), HDL cholesterol (HDL-c), apolipoprotein A (ApoA) and apolipoprotein B (ApoB) lipoproteins), and thyroid hormones (thyroxine (T4), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and thyroperoxidase antibodies). RESULT The average levels of blood glucose, lipids and thyroid hormones were within the recommended range, but clinical levels of TC and LDL-c were detected in 32.5% and 39.1%, respectively. More women with BED compared with BN had low HDL-c, and a larger increase over time in TC and TSH. No significant differences occurred between PED-t and CBT at any measurement. Exploratory moderator analyses indicated a more unfavorable metabolic response at follow-up among treatment non-responders. CONCLUSION The proportion of women with impaired lipid profiles and unfavorable lipid changes, suggests active monitoring with necessary management of the metabolic health of women with BN or BED, as recommended by metabolic health guidelines. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level I: Evidence obtained from a randomized, experimental trial. Abstract
PURPOSE Vegetarian diets have been associated with reduced risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD). However, results regarding cardiovascular disease (CVD) overall and stroke are less clear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies on CVD, IHD and stroke risk among vegetarians or vegans versus nonvegetarians to clarify these associations. METHODS PubMed and Ovid Embase databases were searched through August 12, 2021. Prospective cohort studies reporting adjusted relative risk (RR) estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incidence or mortality from CVD, IHD and stroke, comparing vegetarians and vegans to nonvegetarians were included. Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using ROBINS-I and the strength of evidence was assessed using World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) criteria. Summary RRs (95% CIs) were estimated using a random effects model. RESULTS Thirteen cohort studies (844,175 participants, 115,392 CVD, 30,377 IHD, and 14,419 stroke cases) were included. The summary RR for vegetarians vs. nonvegetarians was 0.85 (95% CI: 0.79-0.92, I2 = 68%, n = 8) for CVD, 0.79 (95% CI: 0.71-0.88, I2 = 67%, n = 8) for IHD, 0.90 (95% CI: 0.77-1.05, I2 = 61%, n = 12) for total stroke, and for vegans vs. nonvegetarians was 0.82 (95% CI: 0.68-1.00, I2 = 0%, n = 6) for IHD. RoB was moderate (n = 8) to serious (n = 5). The associations between vegetarian diets and CVD and IHD were considered probably causal using WCRF criteria. CONCLUSIONS Vegetarian diets are associated with reduced risk of CVD and IHD, but not stroke, but further studies are needed on stroke. These findings should be considered in dietary guidelines. Abstract
Because trying to quit smoking and not gain weight requires changes in two major behaviours simultaneously we explored eating behaviour in smokers with overweight/obesity making a quit attempt using guideline-based treatment. Participants were randomized to a carbohydrate-reduced or fat-reduced diet. The Three Factor Eating Questionnaire and Binge Eating Scale were completed by 48 of 64 participants in the low-carbohydrate and 47 of 58 in the fat-reduced group at randomization, after 6 and 14 weeks. At 6 weeks, no between group differences were seen in eating behaviour scores thus, we combined the sample for further analyses. In the combined sample, restraint increased (3.94 [95% CI 3.05, 4.83]), disinhibition (uncontrolled eating) decreased (-0.86 [95% CI-1.31, -0.41]) and binge eating decreased (-1.95 [95% CI -2.83, -1.06]), while hunger scores did not change (-0.43 [95% CI -0.89, 0.03]) after 14 weeks. In a general linear model, increase in dietary restraint (P = .012) and decrease in binge eating (P = .040) were associated with lower weight gain (model R2 adj = .147). In a smoking cessation program, dietary support regardless of diet was associated with increased dietary restraint and reduced binge eating. Because smoking cessation causes weight gain these results indicate that dietary support leads to eating behaviour changes that may prevent weight gain.

Abstract
The current study aimed to investigate new udder health traits based on data from automatic milking systems (AMS) for use in routine genetic evaluations. Data were from 77 commercial herds; out of these, 24 had equipment for measuring online cell count (OCC), whereas all had data on electrical conductivity (EC). A total of 4,714 Norwegian Red dairy cows and 2,363,928 milkings were included in the genetic analyses. Electrical conductivity was available on quarter level for each milking, whereas OCC was measured per milking. The AMS traits analyzed were log-transformed online cell count (lnOCC), maximum conductivity (ECmax), mean conductivity (ECmean), elevated mastitis risk (EMR), and log-transformed EMR (lnEMR). In addition, lactation mean somatic cell score (LSCS) was collected from the Norwegian dairy herd recording system. Elevated mastitis risk expresses the probability of a cow having mastitis and was calculated from smoothed lnOCC values according to individual trend and level of the OCC curve. The udder health traits from AMS were analyzed as repeated milkings from 30 to 320 DIM, and LSCS as repeated parities. In addition, both ECmax and lnOCC were analyzed as multiple traits by splitting the lactation into 5 periods. (Co)variance components were estimated from bivariate mixed linear animal models, and investigated traits showed genetic variation. Estimated heritabilities of ECmean, ECmax, and lnEMR were 0.35, 0.23, and 0.12, respectively, whereas EMR and lnOCC both showed heritabilities of 0.09. Heritability varied between periods of lactation, from 0.04 to 0.13 for lnOCC and from 0.12 to 0.27 for ECmax, although standard errors of certain periods were large. Genetic correlations among the AMS traits ranged from 0 to 0.99. The genetic correlations between EC-based traits and OCC-based traits in AMS were 0. Genetic correlations with LSCS were favorable, ranging from 0.37 to 0.80 (±0.11-0.22). The strongest correlation (0.80 ± 0.13) was found between LSCS and lnEMR. Results question the value of ECmax and ECmean as indicators of udder health in genetic evaluations and suggest OCC to be more valuable in this manner. This study demonstrates a potential of using AMS data as additional information on udder health for genetic evaluations, although further investigation is recommended before these traits can be implemented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS While excess energy intake and physical inactivity constitute the obvious causes of body fat accumulation, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are novel factors that have been linked to cardiometabolic disorders. Major sources of POPs are animal fats including fatty fish. Given the putative protective effects of fish on cardiovascular disease, we explored whether high consumption of fatty fish increased serum concentrations of POPs. METHODS AND RESULTS Men and women aged 35-70 years with body mass index between 25 and 38 kg/m2 and at least 1 cardiometabolic component were randomized to high intakes of fatty fish (mostly farmed salmon, ∼630 g/week; n = 45), high intakes of nuts (∼200 g/week; n = 42) or a control group following their usual diet but restricting fatty fish and nuts for 6 months (n = 44). Concentrations of 15 POPs (5 organochlorinated compounds, 2 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls and 8 non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls) and cardiometabolic risk factors were measured at baseline and end of the study. Results showed that changes in concentrations of individual and classes of POPs did not differ between the dietary groups and controls (p > 0.05). Among cardiometabolic risk factors HDL-cholesterol increased in the fatty fish group compared to controls (+0.10 mmol/L, CI (0.05-0.20); p = 0.005) while no changes were observed in the group consuming nuts. CONCLUSION Fatty fish consumption for 6 months did not increase the serum concentrations of POPs in individuals with overweight or obesity and metabolic risk. While this finding appears reassuring regarding short-term intakes of farmed salmon, long term variations in POPs in adipose stores require further study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND SFA intake increases LDL cholesterol whereas PUFA intake lowers it. Whether the lipid response to dietary fat differs between normal-weight and obese persons is of relevance to dietary recommendations for obese populations. OBJECTIVES We compared the effect of substituting unsaturated fat for saturated fat on LDL cholesterol and apoB concentrations in normal-weight (BMI ≤ 25 kg/m2) and obese (BMI: 30-45) subjects with elevated LDL cholesterol. METHODS We randomly assigned 83 men and women (aged 21-70 y) stratified by BMI (normal: n = 44; obese: n = 39) and elevated LDL cholesterol (mean ± SD, normal weight 4.6 ± 0.9 mmol/L; obese 4.4 ± 0.8 mmol/L) to either a PUFA diet enriched with oil-based margarine ( n = 42) or an SFA diet enriched with butter (n = 41) for 6 wk. RESULTS Seven-day dietary records showed differences of ∼9 energy percent (E%) in SFA and ∼4 E% in PUFA between the SFA and PUFA groups. In the total study population, the PUFA diet compared with the SFA diet lowered LDL cholesterol (-0.31 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.47, -0.15 mmol/L, compared with 0.32 mmol/L; 95% CI: 0.18, 0.47 mmol/L; P < 0.001) and apoB (-0.08 g/L; 95% CI: -0.11, -0.05 g/L, compared with 0.07 g/L; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.10 g/L; P < 0.001). Tests of the BMI × diet interaction were significant for total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apoB ( P values ≤ 0.009). In normal-weight compared with obese participants post-hoc comparisons found that the respective changes in LDL cholesterol were 9.7% (95% CI: 5.3%, 14.2%) compared with 5.3% (95% CI: -0.7%, 11.2%), P = 0.206, in the SFA group, and -10.4% (95% CI: -15.2%, -5.7%) compared with -2.3% (95% CI: -7.4%, 2.8%), P = 0.020, in the PUFA group. ApoB changes were 7.5% (95% CI: 3.5%, 11.4%) compared with 3.0% (95% CI: -1.7%, 7.7%), P = 0.140, in the SFA group, and -8.9% (95% CI: -12.6%, -5.2%) compared with -3.8% (95% CI: -6.3%, -1.2%), P = 0.021, in the PUFA group. Responses to dietary fat were not associated with changes in polyprotein convertase subtisilin/kexin type 9 concentrations. CONCLUSIONS BMI modifies the effect of PUFAs compared with SFAs, with smaller improvements in atherogenic lipid concentrations in obese than in normal-weight individuals, possibly supporting adjustment of dietary recommendations according to BMI. Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Long-term adherence to conventional weight-loss diets is limited while intermittent fasting has risen in popularity. We compared the effects of intermittent versus continuous energy restriction on weight loss, maintenance and cardiometabolic risk factors in adults with abdominal obesity and ≥1 additional component of metabolic syndrome. METHODS & RESULTS In total 112 participants (men [50%] and women [50%]) aged 21-70 years with BMI 30-45 kg/m2 (mean 35.2 [SD 3.7]) were randomized to intermittent or continuous energy restriction. A 6-month weight-loss phase including 10 visits with dieticians was followed by a 6-month maintenance phase without additional face-to-face counselling. The intermittent energy restriction group was advised to consume 400/600 kcal (female/male) on two non-consecutive days. Based on dietary records both groups reduced energy intake by ∼26-28%. Weight loss was similar among participants in the intermittent and continuous energy restriction groups (8.0 kg [SD 6.5] versus 9.0 kg [SD 7.1]; p = 0.6). There were favorable improvements in waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol with no difference between groups. Weight regain was minimal and similar between the intermittent and continuous energy restriction groups (1.1 kg [SD 3.8] versus 0.4 kg [SD 4.0]; p = 0.6). Intermittent restriction participants reported higher hunger scores than continuous restriction participants on a subjective numeric rating scale (4.7 [SD 2.2] vs 3.6 [SD 2.2]; p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Both intermittent and continuous energy restriction resulted in similar weight loss, maintenance and improvements in cardiovascular risk factors after one year. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Knowledge about physical fitness in women with bulimia nervosa (BN) or binge-eating disorder (BED) is sparse. Previous studies have measured physical activity largely through self-report, and physical fitness variables are mainly restricted to body mass index (BMI) and bone mineral density. We expanded the current knowledge in these groups by including a wider range of physical fitness indicators and objective measures of physical activity, assessed the influence of a history of anorexia nervosa (AN), and evaluated predictive variables for physical fitness. METHOD Physical activity, blood pressure, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), muscle strength, body composition, and bone mineral density were measured in 156 women with BN or BED, with mean (SD) age 28.4 years (5.7) and BMI 25.3 (4.8) kg m-2 . RESULTS Level of physical activity was higher than normative levels, still <50% met the official physical activity recommendation. Fitness in women with BN were on an average comparable with recommendations or normative levels, while women with BED had lower CRF and higher BMI, VAT, and body fat percentage. We found 10-12% with masked obesity. A history of AN did not predict current physical fitness, still values for current body composition were lower when comparing those with history of AN to those with no such history. DISCUSSION Overall, participants with BN or BED displayed adequate physical fitness; however, a high number had unfavorable CRF and body composition. This finding calls for inclusion of physical fitness in routine clinical examinations and guided physical activity and dietary recommendations in the treatment of BN and BED.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sufferers from bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) underestimate the severity risk of their illness and, therefore, postpone seeking professional help for years. Moreover, less than one in five actually seek professional help and only 50% respond to current treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The impetus for the present trial is to explore a novel combination treatment approach adapted from physical exercise- and dietary therapy (PED-t). The therapeutic underpinnings of these separate treatment components are well-known, but their combination to treat BN and BED have never been previously tested. The purpose of this paper is to provide the rationale for this new treatment approach and to outline the specific methods and procedures. METHODS The PED-t trial uses a prospective randomized controlled design. It allocates women between 18 and 40 years (BMI range 17.5-35.0) to groups consisting of 5-8 members who receive either CBT or PED-t for 16 weeks. Excess participants are allocated to a waiting list control group condition. All participants are assessed at baseline, post-treatment, 6, 12 and 24 months' post-follow-up, respectively, and monitored for changes in biological, psychological and therapy process variables. The primary outcome relates to the ED symptom severity, while secondary outcomes relates to treatment effects on physical health, treatment satisfaction, therapeutic alliance, and cost-effectiveness. We aim to disseminate the results in high-impact journals, preferable open access, and at international conferences. DISCUSSION We expect that the new treatment will perform equal to CBT in terms of behavioral and psychological symptoms, but better in terms of reducing somatic symptoms and complications. We also expect that the new treatment will improve physical fitness and thereby, quality of life. Hence, the new treatment will add to the portfolio of evidence-based therapies and thereby provide a good treatment alternative for females with BN and BED. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Weight gain after stopping smoking potentially counteracts improvements in cardiometabolic risks. We investigated changes in metabolic syndrome (MetS) components and homeostasis assessment model insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in smokers given dietary counseling during their quit attempt. METHODS AND RESULTS Smokers (≥10 cigarettes/day) with BMI 25-40 kg/m2 were randomized to a low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet and treated with a standard course of varenicline for 12 weeks. Quitters were assessed according to the Russell standard (≤5 cigarettes after the quit date) validated with expired breath carbon monoxide (CO) < 10 ppm. Of 122 randomized participants, 108 (89%) completed clinical and laboratory assessments at 12 weeks. As changes in metabolic risk factors did not differ between dietary groups, we combined the groups to compare quitters to continuing smokers. We found similar weight change among 78 validated quitters as 30 continuing smokers (-0.1 ± 3.0 kg vs 0.3 ± 3.1 kg; p = 0.7) and change in waist circumference (-2.0 ± 3.8 cm vs -0.9 ± 3.9 cm; p = 0.2). Changes in triglyceride concentrations (-0.16 ± 0.52 mmol/l vs 0.21 ± 0.95 mmol/l; p = 0.015) and diastolic blood pressure (-0.9 ± 6 mmHg vs 1.9 ± 8 mmHg; p = 0.039) were more favorable in quitters. Changes in other cardiometabolic risks and HOMA-IR did not differ between quitters and continuous smokers, nor did energy intake or resting metabolic rate. CONCLUSION Dyslipidemia and blood pressure improved and no early weight gain was seen in quitters, suggesting that dietary intervention can mitigate some of the effects of stopping smoking on cardiometabolic risk factors in overweight and obese smokers. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Weight gain is common when stopping smoking. This study compared the effect of advising smokers to follow a diet low in carbohydrates versus a usual fat-reduced diet on weight gain and nicotine withdrawal. METHODS In a randomized clinical trial, 122 men and women smokers with body mass index 25-40kg/m(2) were assigned low-carbohydrate versus moderately fat-reduced diets. Within a week thereafter all participants started treatment with a 12-week course of varenicline 10 days prior to the target quit date. Brief dietary and motivational counseling was given at all visits. Self-reported abstinence was validated. RESULTS Protein intake in the low-carbohydrate versus fat-reduced diets was 26.4% of total energy versus 20.0%, fat 38.2% versus 30.1%, and carbohydrates 29.0% versus 41.7% (all P < .001). Mean weight changes for the low-carbohydrate versus fat-reduced groups were -1.2 (SD 2.2) versus -0.5 (SD 2.0) kg, -0.2 (SD 3.3) versus 0.5 (SD 2.6) kg, and 2.2 (SD 4.5) versus 2.1 (SD 3.9) kg at 4, 12, and 24 weeks after the target quit date, respectively (not statistically significant). Smoking abstinence rates did not differ between diets. In the combined groups, point prevalence abstinence rates were 71.0% at 12 weeks and 46.3% at 24 weeks. The Minnesota Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms score was lower in the fat-reduced group compared with the low-carbohydrate group at weeks 4 and 12. CONCLUSIONS In overweight or obese smokers using varenicline a low-carbohydrate diet was no better than a fat-reduced diet in reducing weight gain but may result in more severe nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Compared to previous studies, cessation rates with varenicline were not impaired by dietary counseling. IMPLICATIONS The study implies that a popular low-carbohydrate diet does not result in greater weight loss than a moderately fat-reduced diet in overweight and obese smokers who are attempting to quit smoking with the aid of varenicline. Dietary counseling combined with varenicline treatment did not appear to unfavorably influence quit rates compared to previous studies in smokers not selected for overweight or obesity. Notably, the withdrawal symptoms score was lower in the fat-reduced dietary group than the low-carbohydrate group, suggesting a venue for further study.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the predictive correlation of genomic breeding values (GEBV) for claw disorders increased by including genetically correlated traits as additional information in the analyses. Predictive correlations of GEBV for claw disorders were calculated based on claw disorders only and by analyzing claw disorders together with genetically correlated foot and leg conformation traits. The claw disorders analyzed were corkscrew claw (CSC); infectious claw disorder, including dermatitis, heel horn erosion, and interdigital phlegmon; and laminitis-related claw disorder, including sole ulcer, white line disorder, and hemorrhage of sole and white line. The foot and leg conformation traits included were hoof quality, foot angle, rear leg rear view new, and rear leg rear view old. The data consisted of 183,728 daughters with claw health records and 421,319 daughters with foot and leg conformation scores. A 25K/54K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data set containing 48,249 SNP was available for the analyses. The number of genotyped sires with daughter information in the analyses was 1,093 including claw disorders and 3,111 including claw disorders and foot and leg conformation traits. Predictive correlations of GEBV for CSC, infectious claw disorder, and laminitis-related claw disorder were calculated from a 10-fold cross-validation and from an additional validation set including the youngest sires. Only sires having daughters with claw health records were in the validation sets, thus increasing the reference population when adding foot and leg conformation traits. The results showed marginal improvement in the predictive correlation of GEBV for CSC when including hoof quality and foot angle, both in 10-fold cross-validation (from 0.35 to 0.37) and in the validation including the youngest sires (from 0.38 to 0.49). For infectious claw disorder and laminitis-related claw disorder, including foot and leg conformation traits had no effect on the predictive correlation of GEBV. Claw disorders are novel traits with a limited amount of historical data and, therefore, a small reference population. Increasing the reference population by including sires with daughter information on foot and leg conformation traits had small effect on the predictive correlation of GEBV. However, the small increase in predictive correlation of GEBV for CSC shows a possible gain when including moderate to high genetically correlated traits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Kiwifruit contains bioactive substances that may lower blood pressure (BP) and improve endothelial function. We examined the effects of adding kiwifruit to the usual diet on 24-h ambulatory BP, office BP and endothelial function. METHODS In a parallel-groups study, 118 subjects with high normal BP or stage 1 hypertension (systolic BP 130-159 mmHg and/or diastolic BP 85-99 mmHg) were randomized to intake of three kiwifruits (intervention) or one apple (control) a day for 8 weeks. Office and 24-h ambulatory BP was measured along with biomarkers of endothelial function including metabolites of nitric oxide (NO) formation and finger photo-plethysmography. RESULTS At randomization, mean 24-h ambulatory systolic/diastolic BP was 133 ± 13/82 ± 9 mmHg (n = 106). After 8 weeks, BP was lower in the group assigned to kiwifruit versus apple intake (between group difference, - 3.6 mmHg [95% CI - 6.5 to - 0.7], p = 0.017 and - 1.9 mmHg [95% CI - 3.6 to - 0.3]; p = 0.040, for systolic and diastolic BP, respectively). Changes in office BP and endothelial function did not differ between the groups. CONCLUSIONS Among men and women with moderately elevated BP, intake of three kiwifruits was associated with lower systolic and diastolic 24-h BP compared with one apple a day. The effect may be regulated by mechanisms other than improvement of endothelial function.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We examined the effects of 10-14 weeks of inpatient intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI), including a minimum of 90 minutes of adapted physical activity 5 days/week, with regard to changes in quality of life and associations with weight loss in subjects with severe obesity. METHODS A total of 100 severely obese subjects (BMI 42.6 ± 5.3 kg/m(2); 42.7 ± 10.6 years) were included. Quality of life was assessed by Binge Eating Scale, Hospital Anxiety, and Depression Scale, and SF- 36. The ILI group completed the questionnaires at inclusion, after 10-14 weeks and 12 months, and controls at inclusion and after 10-14 weeks. RESULTS Compared to controls, self-reported binge eating (-6.4, P < 0.0001), anxiety (-1.7, P = 0.005), and depression (-3.0, P < 0.0001) were reduced, and physical (8.0, P < 0.0001) and mental (7.6, P < 0.0001) health increased in the ILI group. After 12 months, reduction in self-reported binge eating (-7.2, P < 0.0001) and depression (-3.4, P < 0.0001) and increase in physical (8.9, P < 0.0001) and mental (3.6, P = 0.035) health were maintained. Decreased self-reported binge eating (β = 0.555, P = 0.010) and increased physical health (β = -0.554, P = 0.003) were associated with weight loss. CONCLUSION ILI including a high volume of physical activity in subjects with severe obesity improved quality of life by favorable changes in self-reported binge eating, depression, and mental and physical health. Improvements in binge eating and physical health were associated with weight loss.

Abstract
The main aim of this study was to compare accuracies of imputation and genomic predictions based on single and joint reference populations for Norwegian Red (NRF) and a composite breed (DFS) consisting of Danish Red, Finnish Ayrshire, and Swedish Red. The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data for NRF consisted of 2 data sets: one including 25,000 markers (NRF25K) and the other including 50,000 markers (NRF50K). The NRF25K data set had 2,572 bulls, and the NRF50K data set had 1,128 bulls. Four hundred forty-two bulls were genotyped in both data sets (double-genotyped bulls). The DFS data set (DSF50K) included 50,000 markers of 13,472 individuals, of which around 4,700 were progeny-tested bulls. The NRF25K data set was imputed to 50,000 density using the software Beagle. The average error rate for the imputation of NRF25K decreased slightly from 0.023 to 0.021, and the correlation between observed and imputed genotypes changed from 0.935 to 0.936 when comparing the NRF50K reference and the NRF50K-DFS50K joint reference imputations. A genomic BLUP (GBLUP) model and a Bayesian 4-component mixture model were used to predict genomic breeding values for the NRF and DFS bulls based on the single and joint NRF and DFS reference populations. In the multiple population predictions, accuracies of genomic breeding values increased for the 3 production traits (milk, fat, and protein yields) for both NRF and DFS. Accuracies increased by 6 and 1.3 percentage points, on average, for the NRF and DFS bulls, respectively, using the GBLUP model, and by 9.3 and 1.3 percentage points, on average, using the Bayesian 4-component mixture model. However, accuracies for health or reproduction traits did not increase from the multiple population predictions. Among the 3 DFS populations, Swedish Red gained most in accuracies from the multiple population predictions, presumably because Swedish Red has a closer genetic relationship with NRF than Danish Red and Finnish Ayrshire. The Bayesian 4-component mixture model performed better than the GBLUP model for most production traits for both NRF and DFS, whereas no advantage was found for health or reproduction traits. In general, combining NRF and DFS reference populations was useful in genomic predictions for both the NRF and DFS bulls.

Abstract
One aim of the research was to challenge a previously selected repeatability model with 2 other repeatability models. The main aim, however, was to evaluate random regression models based on the repeatability model with lowest mean-squared error of prediction, using Legendre polynomials up to third order for both animal additive genetic and permanent environmental effects. The random regression and repeatability models were compared for model fit (using likelihood-ratio testing, Akaike information criterion, and the Bayesian information criterion) and the models' mean-squared errors of prediction, and by cross-validation. Cross-validation was carried out by correlating excluded observations in one data set with the animals' breeding values as predicted from the pedigree only in the remaining data, and vice versa (splitting proportion: 0.492). The data was from primiparous goats in 2 closely tied buck circles (17 flocks) in Norway, with 11,438 records for daily milk yield and 5,686 to 5,896 records for content traits (fat, protein, and lactose percentages). A simple pattern was revealed; for daily milk yield with about 5 records per animal in first lactation, a second-order random regression model should be chosen, whereas for content traits that had only about 3 observations per goat, a first-order polynomial was preferred. The likelihood-ratio test, Akaike information criterion, and mean-squared error of prediction favored more complex models, although the results from the latter and the Bayesian information criterion were in the direction of those obtained with cross-validation. As the correlation from cross-validation was largest with random regression, genetic merit was predicted more accurate with random regression models than with the repeatability model.

Abstract
We examined the effects of a 10-14-weeks inpatient lifestyle modification program, including minimum 90 min of physical activity (PA) five days/week, on body composition, CVD risk factors, and eating behavior in 139 obese subjects (BMI 42.6 ± 5.2 kg/m²). Completion rate was 71% (n = 71) in the intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI) group and 85% (n = 33) among waiting list controls. Compared to controls body weight (-17.0 (95% CI: -18.7, -15.3) kg, P < 0.0001), fat mass (-15.2 (95% CI: -17.4, -13.1) kg, P < 0.0001), fat free mass (-1.2 (95% CI: -2.2, -0.2) kg, P = 0.016) and visceral fat (-86.6(95% CI: -97.4, -75.7) cm², P < 0.0001) were reduced in the ILI-group after 10-14 weeks. Within the ILI-group weight loss was -23.8 (95% CI: -25.9, -21.7) kg, P < 0.0001 and -20.3 (95% CI: -23.3, -17.3) kg, P < 0.0001, after six and 12 months, respectively. Systolic BP, glucose, triglycerides, and LDL-C were reduced, and HDL-C was increased (all P ≤ 0.006) after 10-14 weeks within the ILI group. The reduction in glucose and increase in HDL-C were sustained after 12 months (all P < 0.0001). After one year, weight loss was related to increased cognitive restraint and decreased uncontrolled eating (all P < 0.05). Thus, ILI including high volume of PA resulted in weight loss with almost maintenance of fat-free mass, favorable changes in CVD risk factors, and eating behavior in subjects with severe obesity.

Abstract
Coronary flow reserve (CFR) is an important index of coronary microcirculatory function. The objective of this study was to validate the reproducibility and accuracy of intravascular conductance catheter-based method for measurements of baseline and hyperemic coronary flow velocity (and hence CFR). The absolute coronary blood velocity was determined by measuring the time of transit of a saline injection between two pairs of electrodes (known distance) on a conductance catheter during a routine saline injection without the need for reference flow. In vitro validation was made in the velocity range of 5 to 70 cm/s in reference to the volume collection method. In 10 swine, velocity measurements were compared with those from a flow probe in coronary arteries at different CFR attained by microsphere embolization. In vitro, the mean difference between the proposed method and volume collection was 0.7 ± 1.34 cm/s for steady flow and −0.77 ± 2.22 cm/s for pulsatile flow. The mean difference between duplicate measurements was 0 ± 1.4 cm/s. In in vivo experiments, the flow (product of velocity and lumen cross-sectional area that is also measured by the conductance catheter) was determined in both normal and stenotic vessels and the mean difference between the proposed method and flow probe was −1 ± 12 ml/min (flow ranged from 10 to 130 ml/min). For CFR, the mean difference between the two methods was 0.06 ± 0.28 (range of 1 to 3). Our results demonstrate the reproducibility and accuracy of velocity and CFR measurements with a conductance catheter by use of a standard saline injection. The ability of the combined measurement of coronary lumen area (as previously validated) and current velocity and CFR measurements provides an integrative diagnostic tool for interventional cardiology.

Abstract
Reproductive performance is a critical trait in dairy cattle. Poor reproductive performance leads to prolonged calving intervals, higher culling rates and extra expenses related to multiple inseminations, veterinary treatments and replacements. Genetic gain for improved reproduction through traditional selection is often slow because of low heritability and negative correlations with production traits. Detection of DNA markers associated with improved reproductive performance through genome-wide association studies could lead to genetic gain that is more balanced between fertility and production. Norwegian Red cattle are well suited for such studies, as very large numbers of detailed reproduction records are available. We conducted a genome-wide association study for non-return rate, fertility treatments and retained placenta using almost 1 million records on these traits and 17 343 genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphisms. Genotyping costs were minimized by genotyping the sires of the cows recorded and by using daughter averages as phenotypes. The genotyped sires were assigned to either a discovery or a validation population. Associations were only considered to be validated if they were significant in both groups. Strong associations were found and validated on chromosomes 1, 5, 8, 9, 11 and 12. Several of these were highly supported by findings in other studies. The most important result was an association for non-return rate in heifers in a region of BTA12 where several associations for milk production traits have previously been found. Subsequent fine-mapping verified the presence of a quantitative trait loci (QTL) having opposing effects on non-return rate and milk production at 18 Mb. The other reproduction QTL did not have pleiotropic effects on milk production, and these are therefore of considerable interest for use in marker-assisted selection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD) are associated with increased morbidity and mortality and weight loss is recommended to overweight or obese patients with SRBD. However, maintenance of weight loss is difficult to achieve and strategies for weight loss maintenance is needed. Orlistat is a pharmacological agent that reduces the intestinal absorption of fat and may favour long-term weight maintenance. OBJECTIVE To examine the change in body weight and dietary intake during a 1-year treatment with orlistat after an initial weight loss in obese subjects with SRBD. Furthermore, to explore the dietary determinants of weight maintenance during treatment with orlistat. METHODS Men and women with SRBD aged 32-62 years (n=63) participated in a 3-month dietary intervention to increase intake of vegetables and fruit. After an initial weight loss of 3.4 kg they achieved a mean body mass index of 34.3±4.7 kg/m2. Subsequently they were treated with orlistat for 1 year. During this year, dietary and behavioural interventions to attain weight loss were provided in the course of 14 group sessions. Dietary intake, energy density and food choices were assessed with a food frequency questionnaire before and after orlistat treatment. RESULTS With orlistat, body weight decreased by a mean of 3.5 kg (95% CI 1.5, 5.5). The dietary E% from saturated fat, intake of fatty dairy products and energy density increased after 1 year while intakes of oils, fish and vegetables decreased (all P<0.05). After multivariate adjustments, weight loss was associated with E% protein (R2adj=0.19 [95% CI 0.10, 0.46]), and inversely associated with E% saturated fat (R2adj=0.20 [95% CI 0.12, 0.47]) and fatty dairy products (R2adj=0.23 [95% CI 0.12, 0.49]). CONCLUSIONS Orlistat induced further weight loss, but dietary compliance declined with time. Increasing dietary protein and restricting saturated fat and fatty dairy products may facilitate weight loss with orlistat.

Abstract
Mastitis is the most frequent and costly disease in dairy production and solutions leading to a reduction in the incidence of mastitis are highly demanded. Here a genome-wide association study was performed to identify polymorphisms affecting susceptibility to mastitis. Genotypes for 17 349 SNPs distributed across the 29 bovine autosomal chromosomes from a total of 2589 sires with 1 389 776 daughters with records on clinical mastitis were included in the analysis. Records of occurrence of clinical mastitis were divided into seven time periods in the first three lactations in order to identify quantitative trait loci affecting mastitis susceptibility in particular phases of lactation. The most convincing results from the association mapping were followed up and validated by a combined linkage disequilibrium and linkage analysis. The study revealed quantitative trait loci affecting occurrence of clinical mastitis in the periparturient period on chromosomes 2, 6 and 20 and a quantitative trait locus affecting occurrence of clinical mastitis in late lactation on chromosome 14. None of the quantitative trait loci for clinical mastitis detected in the study seemed to affect lactation average of somatic cell score. The SNPs highly associated with clinical mastitis lie near both the gene encoding interleukin 8 on chromosome 6 and the genes encoding the two interleukin 8 receptors on chromosome 2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Plant-based diets rich in fruit and vegetables can prevent development of several chronic age-related diseases. However, the mechanisms behind this protective effect are not elucidated. We have tested the hypothesis that intake of antioxidant-rich foods can affect groups of genes associated with cellular stress defence in human blood cells. METHODS In an 8-week dietary intervention study, 102 healthy male smokers were randomised to either a diet rich in various antioxidant-rich foods, a kiwifruit diet (three kiwifruits/d added to the regular diet) or a control group. Blood cell gene expression profiles were obtained from 10 randomly selected individuals of each group. Diet-induced changes on gene expression were compared to controls using a novel application of the gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) on transcription profiles obtained using Affymetrix HG-U133-Plus 2.0 whole genome arrays. RESULTS Changes were observed in the blood cell gene expression profiles in both intervention groups when compared to the control group. Groups of genes involved in regulation of cellular stress defence, such as DNA repair, apoptosis and hypoxia, were significantly upregulated (GSEA, FDR q-values < 5%) by both diets compared to the control group. Genes with common regulatory motifs for aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and AhR nuclear translocator (AhR/ARNT) were upregulated by both interventions (FDR q-values < 5%). Plasma antioxidant biomarkers (polyphenols/carotenoids) increased in both groups. CONCLUSIONS The observed changes in the blood cell gene expression profiles suggest that the beneficial effects of a plant-based diet on human health may be mediated through optimization of defence processes.

Abstract
A safe, easy, and quick access into the pericardial space may provide a window for diagnostics and therapeutics to the heart. The objective of this study was to provide proof of concept for an engagement and access catheter that allows access to the pericardial space percutaneously. A multilumen catheter was developed to allow navigation and suction fixation to the right atrial appendage/wall in a normal swine model. Advancement through the multilumen catheter using a second catheter with a distal needle tip allows access to the pericardial space without pericardial puncture and advancement of a standard guide wire into the space. Navigation into the pericardial space was undertaken by fluoroscopy alone and was accomplished in 10 swine (5 acute and 5 chronic). As a specific application of this pericardial access method, a pacing lead was implanted on the epicardial surface. Five chronic swine experiments were conducted with successful pacing engagement verified by lead impedance and pacing threshold and sensing. Lead impedance exceeded 1,000 Ω preengagement and dropped by an average of 200 Ω upon implant (769 ± 498 Ω). Pacing thresholds at 0.4 ms ranged from ∼0.5 to 2.1 V acutely (1.03 ± 0.92 V). No cardiac effusion or tamponade was observed in any of the acute or chronic studies. The ability to engage, maintain, and retract the right atrial appendage/wall and to engage an epicardial lead was successfully demonstrated. These findings support the feasibility of safe access into the pericardial space in a normal swine model and warrant further investigations for clinical translation.

Abstract
Dystocia and stillbirth are significant causes of female and neonatal death in many species and there is evidence for a genetic component to both traits. Identifying causal mutations affecting these traits through genome wide association studies could reveal the genetic pathways involved and will be a step towards targeted interventions. Norwegian Red cattle are an ideal model breed for such studies as very large numbers of records are available. We conducted a genome wide association study for direct and maternal effects of dystocia and stillbirth using almost 1 million records of these traits. Genotyping costs were minimized by genotyping the sires of the recorded cows, and using daughter averages as phenotypes. A dense marker map containing 17,343 single nucleotide polymorphisms covering all autosomal chromosomes was utilized. The genotyped sires were assigned to one of two groups in an attempt to ensure independence between the groups. Associations were only considered validated if they occurred in both groups. Strong associations were found and validated on chromosomes 4, 5, 6, 9, 12, 20, 22 and 28. The QTL region on chromosome 6 was refined using LDLA analysis. The results showed that this chromosome most probably contains two QTL for direct effect on dystocia and one for direct effect on stillbirth. Several candidate genes may be identified close to these QTL. Of these, a cluster of genes expected to affect bone and cartilage formation (i.e. SPP1, IBSP and MEPE) are of particular interest and we suggest that these genes are screened in candidate gene studies for dystocia and stillbirth in cattle as well as other species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Orlistat is a lipase inhibitor that reduces the intestinal absorption of fat and may enhance the effects of dietary and behavioural therapy on weight loss and maintenance. The present study examined the effect of orlistat on dietary intake, especially fat intake, during long-term weight maintenance. METHODS Subjects comprised 44 men and women (aged 18-63 years; body mass index 37.5 +/- 4.3 kg m(-2)) included in the Scandinavian Multicenter study of Obese subjects with the metabolic syndrome, a 3-year clinical trial of orlistat or placebo following an 8-week, very low energy diet (VLED). Two months after the end of the trial when the use of orlistat was optional, 33 subjects remained in the study. A dietary interview based on a validated food frequency questionnaire was conducted before the VLED, after 1 year of treatment with orlistat or placebo and 2 months after the end of the trial. RESULTS At 1 year, dietary intake did not differ between the orlistat and placebo group. Energy percent (E%) fat was reduced and E% carbohydrate was increased within both groups. Two months after the end of the trial, E% fat was 32.6% (SD 6.2%) in subjects that chose to take orlistat and 27.7% (SD 5.5%) in subjects not taking orlistat [between group difference -5.0% (95% confidence interval -9.2 to -0.7); P = 0.021]. CONCLUSIONS The use of orlistat compared with placebo in a lifestyle modification programme does not appear to influence dietary intake. Subjects that chose to take orlistat after the end of the programme did not comply with dietary recommendations and this may hamper the effect of the drug.

Abstract
Calving difficulty is an economically and ethically important trait for dairy cattle breeding. The aim of the present paper was to refine the position of a previously detected quantitative trait locus (QTL) affecting calving difficulty (direct effect) in Norwegian Red dairy cows. A granddaughter design consisting of 18 elite sire families and a total of 713 sons was genotyped for 154 markers spanning the QTL region, and the trait data were analyzed by using a combined linkage and linkage disequilibrium approach. A highly significant QTL was detected in a 150-kb interval between the markers LAP3_281 and BTA-114677. Additionally, there were some indications of a second QTL between the markers BTA-75776 and BTA-75780 located less than 500 kb apart. Several candidate genes may be identified close to these QTL. Of these, a cluster of genes expected to affect bone and cartilage formation may be of particular interest for follow-up studies.

Abstract
Test-day data for daily milk yield and fat, protein, and lactose content were sampled from the years 1988 to 2003 in 17 flocks belonging to 2 genetically well-tied buck circles. In total, records from 2,111 to 2,215 goats for content traits and 2,371 goats for daily milk yield were included in the analysis, averaging 2.6 and 4.8 observations per goat for the 2 groups of traits, respectively. The data were analyzed by using 4 test-day models with different modeling of fixed effects. Model [0] (the reference model) contained a fixed effect of year-season of kidding with regression on Ali-Schaeffer polynomials nested within the year-season classes, and a random effect of flock test-day. In model [1], the lactation curve effect from model [0] was replaced by a fixed effect of days in milk (in 3-d periods), the same for all year-seasons of kidding. Models [2] and [3] were obtained from model [1] by removing the fixed year-season of kidding effect and considering the flock test-day effect as either fixed or random, respectively. The models were compared by using 2 criteria: mean-squared error of prediction and a test of bias affecting the genetic trend. The first criterion indicated a preference for model [3], whereas the second criterion preferred model [1]. Mean-squared error of prediction is based on model fit, whereas the second criterion tests the ability of the model to produce unbiased genetic evaluation (i.e., its capability of separating environmental and genetic time trends). Thus, a fixed structure with year (year, year-season, or possibly flock-year) was indicated to appropriately separate time trends. Heritability estimates for daily milk yield and milk content were 0.26 and 0.24 to 0.27, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of orlistat on dietary restraint, disinhibition, hunger, and binge eating and to understand the relation between changes in eating behavior and weight maintenance. METHODS AND PROCEDURES Subjects were 306 women and men (age: 19-45 years; BMI: 37.5 +/- 4.1 kg/m(2)) included in the Scandinavian Multicenter study of Obese subjects with the Metabolic Syndrome, a 3-year clinical trial of orlistat or placebo following an 8-week very low energy diet (VLED). Outcomes were changes in weight and in the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ) and Binge Eating Scale (BES) between screening and 17 and 33 months after randomization. As reported previously, weight gain following VLED was lower in subjects treated with orlistat than with placebo. RESULTS Compared to screening results, dietary restraint was increased and disinhibition, hunger, and binge eating were decreased in both groups. These changes were similar in both groups with the exception of the hunger score at month 33 that was reduced more in the placebo than in the orlistat group (difference between groups -1.1 (95% CI (-2.0, -0.2)) P = 0.014). In multivariate analyses, scores for restraint, disinhibition and binge eating were associated with weight loss after adjustment for BMI, gender, age, and treatment (all P < or = 0.002, model R (2) = 0.12-0.17). DISCUSSION Orlistat did not affect eating behavior differently in any substantial way than the placebo did in this long-term weight maintenance trial. The results indicate that increased restraint and decreased disinhibition and binge eating are important for sustained weight maintenance in obese subjects with the metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to infer genetic parameters for stillbirth (SB) and calving difficulty (CD) and to evaluate phenotypic and genetic change for these traits in the Norwegian Red breed. Stillbirth is recorded as a binary trait and calving difficulty has 3 categories: 1) easy calving, 2) slight problems, and 3) difficult calving. The overall mean frequency of SB in Norwegian Red was 3% at first calving and 1.5% for second and later calvings; mean frequency of the category "difficult calving" was 2 to 3% for heifers and 1% for cows at second and later calvings. Mean stillbirth rate has remained unchanged from 1978 to 2004. The proportion of the category "difficult calving" has not changed over the years, but the "slight problems" category increased from 4 to 7% for heifers and from 2 to 3% for cows. A total of 528,475 first-calving records were analyzed with a Bayesian bivariate sire-maternal grandsire threshold liability model. Posterior means of direct and maternal heritabilities were 0.13 and 0.09 for CD, and 0.07 and 0.08 for SB, respectively. Strong genetic correlations were found between direct SB and direct CD (0.79), and between maternal SB and maternal CD (0.62), whereas all genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects within or between traits were close to zero. These positive correlations are favorable in the sense that selection for one of the traits would result in a favorable selection response for the second trait. No genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects imply that bulls should be evaluated both as sire of the calf (direct) and sire of the cow (maternal). No genetic change for SB was found, and a slight genetic improvement for CD was detected.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine the accuracy of reported energy intake according to a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and dietary records (DR) in obese subjects with metabolic syndrome risk factors. Subjects were twenty-three men and twenty-seven women with mean BMI of 35·7 (range 30·5–43·8) kg/m2 who participated in a dietary interview based on a FFQ and completed weighed DR. Total energy expenditure was measured with the doubly labelled water method. Total energy expenditure, measured RMR and physical activity level did not differ between under-reporters (50% of the sample) and non-under-reporters. Under-reporters had lower median intake of sweets, desserts and snacks than non-under-reporters (100 V.. 161g/d (P=0·0008) and 61 V.. 128g/d (P.=0·0002) according to the FFQ and DR, respectively). The DR also showed lower energy density (6·7 (sd 1·3) V 7·9 (sd 1·6) kJ/g; P=0·0064), lower intake of sugary drinks (0 V. 167g/d; P=0·0063) and higher scores for dietary restraint (9·0 (sd 5·0) V. 6·1 (sd 3·5); P=0·0285) in under-reporters. Energy density was associated with accuracy according to the FFQ (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (RS) 0·406; P=0·0034) and the DR (RS 0·537; P<0·0001). In multivariate analysis, consumption of bread and sweets, desserts and snacks measured by the FFQ was positively associated with accuracy (I2adjusted 0·46 (95% CI 0·32, 0·70)). According to the DR, consumption of sweets, desserts and snacks was also associated with accuracy, as was dietary restraint (inversely) (I2adjusted 0·67 (95% CI 0·54, 0·83)). In obese subjects with metabolic risk factors, intake of sweets, desserts and snacks, bread and dietary restraint were determinants of reporting accuracy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of an increased consumption of vegetables and fruit on body weight, risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and antioxidant defense in obese patients with sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD). DESIGN Randomized, controlled trial of an intervention to increase the intake of vegetables to 400 g/day and fruit to 300 g/day. Dietary intake was calculated from a food frequency questionnaire. Antioxidant status was assessed with the ferric-reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Plasma carotenoids were biomarkers for the intake of vegetables and fruit. SETTING A hospital clinic preventing risk factors for CVD. SUBJECTS Subjects were 103 men and 35 women with a body mass index of 36.7+/-5.8 kg/m(2) of which 57 (86%) in the control and 68 (94%) in the intervention group completed the study. INTERVENTION Group-based behavioral program during 3 months. RESULTS The mean between group differences in body weight was -2.0% (95% CI -3.6, -0.5), P<0.0001. The mean between group difference in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) was -7.1 mm Hg (95% CI: -11.6, -2.6), P=0.0022 and -3.9 mm Hg (95% CI: -7.0, -0.9), P=0.0120, respectively. The mean change in daily intake of vegetables and fruit was 12 g (95% CI: -33, 57) and -4 g (95% CI: -79, 71) versus 245 g (95% CI: 194, 296) and 248 g (95% CI: 176, 320) in the control and intervention groups, respectively. This was reflected in higher concentrations of alpha-carotene and beta-carotene. No change in FRAP was seen. In a multiple regression analysis the change in intake of vegetables was a significant contributor (R(adj)(2)=0.073 (95% CI: 0.019, 0.214)) to the change in weight. CONCLUSION Targeted dietary advice to increase the intake of vegetables and fruit among subjects with SRBD contributed to weight reduction and reduced systolic and diastolic BP, but had no effect on antioxidant defense measured with FRAP.

Abstract
The metabolic syndrome and cigarette smoking each increase the risk of a recurrent event in patients with premature coronary heart disease. We explored the association between cigarette smoking and the metabolic syndrome by examining 705 men aged < 55 years and 296 women < 65 years within 6 to 12 months of a major coronary heart disease event. Most were taking statins (96%) and antihypertensive drugs (88%). Nearly 1/3 of the subjects had the full metabolic syndrome, as defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program criteria. These subjects were less likely to be nonsmokers than were those with < or = 2 components of the metabolic syndrome (13.2% vs 24.2%, p < 0.0001). After adjustment for age, educational attendance, and alcohol consumption, the odds ratio (OR) for the metabolic syndrome was doubled in men who smoked cigarettes daily (OR 2.2, 95% confidence interval 1.3 to 3.7) or who were ex-smokers (OR 2.3, 95% confidence interval 1.4 to 3.9) compared with nonsmokers. Female ex-smokers had an increased risk compared with nonsmokers (OR 2.0, 95% confidence interval 1.0 to 3.9). Ex-smokers were more likely to meet the metabolic syndrome cutoff levels for waist circumference and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p < or = 0.01) than were nonsmokers. Also, male ex-smokers were more likely to exceed the cutoff level for triglycerides (p = 0.004). These findings indicate that although smoking cessation is imperative for patients with premature CHD, the metabolic risks associated with overweight and obesity after cessation need to be addressed.

Abstract
Combined linkage and linkage disequilibrium analysis were used to refine the position of a previously detected QTL affecting milk production traits on bovine chromosome 6. Through a series of single- and multitrait and single- and multipoint QTL analyses, the QTL could be positioned to a 7.5-cM interval surrounded by the markers BMS2508 and FBN12. The most significant results were found for fat percentage and protein percentage. This effect seemed to be caused by a QTL allele embedded in one specific marker haplotype that caused a reduction in fat and protein yields and a concomitant increase of milk yield, thus resulting in a marked reduction of fat and protein percentages.

Abstract
Critical to the prevention of xenograft loss is the prevention of delayed xenograft rejection (DXR), due to its resistance to conventional immunosuppression. The role of the carbohydrate galactose-alpha1,3-galactose (alpha1,3Gal) has been a matter of great debate and it has been proposed that the reaction between alpha1,3Gal epitopes on donor endothelial cells and recipient anti-alpha1,3Gal antibodies (Abs) may damage the graft during DXR. Recipient anti-alpha1,3Gal Abs are produced by CD4-dependent B cells. To test the above-mentioned hypothesis, hearts from alpha1,3Gal-free mice (GT-Ko mice), generated by alpha1,3-galacto-syltransferase gene disruption, were transplanted to anti-alpha1,3Gal antibody-free Lew/Mol rats. This model consists of an alpha1,3Gal/alpha1,3Gal-antibody-free environment, eliminating a possible influence of this specific system on DXR. A subgroup of recipients were furthermore CD4 depleted in order to inhibit CD4-dependent B-cell antibody production. Rejected hearts were evaluated by light- and immunofluorescence microscopy. Treatment effects on recipient T-cell subsets and cytokine expression were analyzed by flow cytometry, while antibody production was measured by ELISA. All recipients developed DXR with no differences among the groups. DXR was related to thrombosis with IgG and IgM desposition in vessel walls, as well as macrophage and granulocyte accumulation in the myocardium. No complement C3, CD4 cells or NK cells were found. Flow cytometric analysis confirmed peripheral blood CD4 depletion and IFN-gamma suppression in CD4 Ab-treated recipients. Finally, ELISA showed that specific anti-alpha1,3Gal Ab production was absent. However, Ab(s) against an unidentified Galalpha 1 were found among recipients. In our model, DXR is resistant to alpha1,3-galactosyltransferase gene inactivation and CD4 depletion. However, other Galalpha 1 epitopes and antibodies may play a role during DXR. Further studies are needed to elucidate the precise pathways leading to DXR.
