Abstract
Improving the thermal resilience of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) broadens their applicability as sensing devices and is necessary to ensure their operation under harsh environments. In this work, we are address the impact of temperature on the degradation of the magnetic reference in field sensor stacks based on MgO-MTJs. Our study starts by simple MnIr/CoFe bilayers to gather enough insights into the role of critical morphological and magnetic parameters and their impact in the temperature dependent behavior. The exchange bias coupling field (Hex), coercive field (Hc), and blocking temperature (Tb) distribution are tuned, combining tailored growth conditions of the antiferromagnet and different buffer layer materials and stackings. This is achieved by a unique combination of ion beam deposition and magnetron sputtering, without vaccum break. Then, the work then extends beyond bilayers into more complex state-of-the-art MgO MTJ stacks as those employed in commercial sensing applications. We systematically address their characteristic fields, such as the width of the antiferromagnetic coupling plateau ΔH, and study their dependence on temperature. Although, [Ta/CuN] buffers showed higher key performance indications (e.g.Hex) at room temperature in both bilayers and MTJs, [Ta/Ru] buffers showed an overall wider ΔHup to 200 °C, more suitable to push high temperature operations. This result highlights the importance of properly design a suitable buffer layer system and addressing the complete MTJ behavior as function of temperature, to deliver the best stacking design with highest resilience to high temperature environments.

Abstract
The Feline Leukemia Virus Subgroup C Receptor 1a (FLVCR1a) is a transmembrane heme exporter essential for embryonic vascular development. However, the exact role of FLVCR1a during blood vessel development remains largely undefined. Here, we show that FLVCR1a is highly expressed in angiogenic endothelial cells (ECs) compared to quiescent ECs. Consistently, ECs lacking FLVCR1a give rise to structurally and functionally abnormal vascular networks in multiple models of developmental and pathologic angiogenesis. Firstly, zebrafish embryos without FLVCR1a displayed defective intersegmental vessels formation. Furthermore, endothelial-specific Flvcr1a targeting in mice led to a reduced radial expansion of the retinal vasculature associated to decreased EC proliferation. Moreover, Flvcr1a null retinas showed defective vascular organization and loose attachment of pericytes. Finally, adult neo-angiogenesis is severely affected in murine models of tumor angiogenesis. Tumor blood vessels lacking Flvcr1a were disorganized and dysfunctional. Collectively, our results demonstrate the critical role of FLVCR1a as a regulator of developmental and pathological angiogenesis identifying FLVCR1a as a potential therapeutic target in human diseases characterized by aberrant neovascularization.

Abstract
Iron recycling prevents the development of anemia under homeostatic conditions. Whether iron recycling was co-opted as a defense strategy to prevent the development of anemia in response to infection is unclear. We find that in severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria, the onset of life-threatening anemia is associated with acute kidney injury (AKI), irrespective of parasite load. Using a well-established experimental rodent model of malaria anemia, we identify a transcriptional response that endows renal proximal tubule epithelial cells (RPTECs) with the capacity to store and recycle iron during P. chabaudi chabaudi (Pcc) infection. This response encompasses the induction of ferroportin 1/SLC40A1, which exports iron from RPTECs and counteracts AKI while supporting compensatory erythropoiesis and preventing the onset of life-threatening malarial anemia. Iron recycling by myeloid cells is dispensable to this protective response, suggesting that RPTECs provide an iron-recycling salvage pathway that prevents the pathogenesis of life-threatening malarial anemia.

Abstract
Hypoglycemia is a clinical hallmark of severe malaria, the often-lethal outcome of Plasmodium falciparum infection. Here, we report that malaria-associated hypoglycemia emerges from a non-canonical resistance mechanism, whereby the infected host reduces glycemia to starve Plasmodium. This hypometabolic response is elicited by labile heme, a byproduct of hemolysis that induces illness-induced anorexia and represses hepatic glucose production. While transient repression of hepatic glucose production prevents unfettered immune-mediated inflammation, organ damage, and anemia, when sustained over time it leads to hypoglycemia, compromising host energy expenditure and adaptive thermoregulation. The latter arrests the development of asexual stages of Plasmodium via a mechanism associated with parasite mitochondrial dysfunction. In response, Plasmodium activates a transcriptional program associated with the reduction of virulence and sexual differentiation toward the generation of transmissible gametocytes. In conclusion, malaria-associated hypoglycemia represents a trade-off of a hypometabolic-based defense strategy that balances parasite virulence versus transmission.

Abstract
The titanium implant/zirconia abutment interface can suffer failure upon mechanical and biological issues, ultimately leading to the loss of the artificial tooth. The study of the effect of the organic compounds present in saliva on the tribological behavior of these systems is of utmost importance to understand the failure mechanisms and better mimic the in vivo conditions. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the effect of the addition of albumin, urea, lysozyme and mucin to artificial saliva, on the triboactivity of Ti6Al4V/zirconia pair commonly used in dental implants and then, compare the results with those obtained with human saliva. The solutions' viscosity was measured and the adsorption of the different biomolecules to both Ti6Al4V and zirconia was accessed. Tribological tests were performed using Ti6Al4V balls sliding on zirconia plates inside of a corrosion cell. Friction and wear coefficients were determined, and the open circuit potential (OCP) was monitored during the tests. Also, the wear mechanisms were identified. The presence of mucin in the artificial lubricant led to the lowest wear coefficients. The main wear mechanism was abrasion, independently of the used lubricant. Adhesive wear was observed for the systems without mucin. Tribocorrosion activity and wear coefficient were lower in the presence of mucin. None of the studied artificial lubricants mimicked the effect of human saliva (HS) on the tribological behavior of the studied pair since this lubricant led to the lowest friction coefficient and highest corrosion activity.

Abstract
Background:Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory auto-immune disease characterized by an excessive production of pathogenic mediators that cause inflammation of the skin, peripheral joints, entheses and the spine. Among these, interleukin (IL)-23, IL-12, the IL-17 family and TNF constitute key players in PsA pathogenesis.1,2IL-23, consisting of IL23A (IL-23p19) and IL12B (IL-12p40) subunits, is predominantly produced by myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs). While the p19 subunit is unique to IL-23, the p40 subunit is shared with IL-12. Together, IL-12 and IL-23 play a crucial role in promoting the differentiation of naïve T lymphocytes into T helper (Th) interferon (IFN)-γ-producing Th1 or IL17-producing Th17 cells, respectively.3Small-molecule inhibitors, such as the JAK/STAT inhibitor Tofacitinib, have recently shown promising therapeutic potential in PsA clinical trials.4The inhibition of JAKs by Tofacitinib results in the direct suppression of multiple intracellular signaling pathways which constitute key hubs in the cytokine network.5However, whether Tofacitinib is able directly target IL-12/IL-23 production by mDCs has not yet been documented. Suppression of these canonical inflammatory pathways would provide further evidence that Tofacitinib is an effective drug in halting both innate and adaptive immune responses.Objectives:To evaluate the transcriptional and molecular events underlining IL-12 and IL-23 regulation by Tofacitinib in mDCs.Methods:Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy donors were isolated by Ficoll gradient. Monocytes and myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) were isolated by using magnetic beads on autoMACS. Monocytes were cultured for 6 days in the presence of IL-4 and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) to generate monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs). MoDCs were harvested, washed and put to rest for 1 day prior to stimulation, while mDCs were stimulated on the same day of isolation. Both moDCs and mDCs were pre-treated with Tofacitinib and then stimulated with either lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or combination of LPS with IFN-γ for 4 hours. Cytokines were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and gene expression was assessed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR).Results:Treatment of both mDCs and moDCs with Tofacitinib led to a decreased mRNA expression of IL-12 p40 (IL12B) in the presence of TLR4 and IFNγ co-stimulation. The decreasedIL12BmRNA expression also resulted in lower production of IL-12 p40 and IL-23 proteins in mDCs.Conclusion:In this work, we demonstrated for the first time that Tofacitinib can suppress the production of IL-23/IL-12 p40 subunit in mDCs, upon the condition that an active type II IFN signalling is also present in these cells. This observation indicates that specific factors, such as endogenous IFN-γ levels in the serum of PsA patients, can possibly predict differential responses to Tofacitinib treatment.References:[1]Gaffen SL. et al. Abstract
Novel applications for memory devices demand nanoscale flexible structures. In particular, resistive switching (RS) devices are promising candidates for wearable and implantable technologies. Here, the Pt/Si/Ag/TiW metal-insulator-metal structure was fabricated and characterized on top of flexible substrates using a straightforward microfabrication process. We also showed that these substrates are compatible with sputtering deposition. RS was successfully achieved using both commercial cellulose cleanroom paper and bacterial cellulose, and polymer (PET) substrates. The bipolar switching behavior was observed for both flat and bent (under a radius of 3.5 mm) configurations. The observed phenomenon was explained by the formation/rupture of metallic Ag filaments in the otherwise insulating Si host layer.

Abstract
GdMnO3 epitaxial thin films were deposited onto (110)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates by RF magnetron sputtering. The structure, microstructure, dielectric and magnetic properties were investigated in detail. The XRD results revealed that the GdMnO3 thin films exhibit an epitaxial strained orthorhombic symmetry and grow preferably in off-plane (001) orientation, wherein the basal lattice parameters are strained by the substrate lattice. A dielectric relaxation process was ascertained, whose activation energy is sensitive to the magnetic phase transitions, occurring at 41 K and at 20 K, respectively. The canted nature of the low temperature magnetic phase is discussed.

Abstract
Malaria, the disease caused by Plasmodium spp. infection, remains a major global cause of morbidity and mortality. Host protection from malaria relies on immune-driven resistance mechanisms that kill Plasmodium However, these mechanisms are not sufficient per se to avoid the development of severe forms of disease. This is accomplished instead via the establishment of disease tolerance to malaria, a defense strategy that does not target Plasmodium directly. Here we demonstrate that the establishment of disease tolerance to malaria relies on a tissue damage-control mechanism that operates specifically in renal proximal tubule epithelial cells (RPTEC). This protective response relies on the induction of heme oxygenase-1 (HMOX1; HO-1) and ferritin H chain (FTH) via a mechanism that involves the transcription-factor nuclear-factor E2-related factor-2 (NRF2). As it accumulates in plasma and urine during the blood stage of Plasmodium infection, labile heme is detoxified in RPTEC by HO-1 and FTH, preventing the development of acute kidney injury, a clinical hallmark of severe malaria.

Abstract
Obtaining high efficiency spin filtering at room temperature using spinel ferromagnetic tunnel barriers has been hampered by the formation of antiphase boundaries due to their difference in lattice parameters between barrier and electrodes. In this work we demonstrate the use of LiTi2O4 thin films as electrodes in an all-spinel oxide CoFe2O4-based spin filter devices. These structures show nearly perfect epitaxy maintained throughout the structure and so minimise the potential for APBs formation. The LiTi2O4 in these devices is superconducting and so measurements at low temperature have been used to explore details of the tunnelling and Josephson junction behaviour.

Abstract
The recent realization of memristors, nanodevices exhibiting non-volatile resistive switching, has sparked tremendous interest for applications in fields such as nonvolatile memories. Here we report unipolar resistive switching in Pt/MgO/Ta/Ru structures, with an oxide barrier thickness of only 15 nm. No electroforming process was required to achieve resistive switching and an ohmic conduction mechanism is associated with the ON state. We observed an inverse dependence of the ON state resistance on the SET current compliance and average values of 1.61 V and 1.38 V for the SET and RESET voltages, respectively. We show the stability of the switching for over 40 cycles and a clear separation of the ON (10¹ Ω) and OFF (10² Ω) states during at least 10⁴ s.

Abstract
The Basque Country is home to the Latxa sheep breed, which is divided in several varieties such as Latxa Black Face (LBKF) and Latxa Blonde Face (LBLF). Mitochondrial DNA control region analysis of 174 male sheep (97 LBKF and 77 LBLF) was performed with the objective of characterizing the maternal lineages of these two varieties that are the basis to produce the cheese with Idiazabal quality label. The percentage of unique haplotypes was 77.32% in LBKF and 67.53% in LBLF. Most of the individuals were classified into B haplogroup (98.85%), while A haplogroup was much less frequent. Two Latxa individuals (one LBKF and one LBLF), both belonging to B haplogroup, displayed an additional 75/76 bp tandem repeat motif. Only 33 other sequences with this repeat motif were found among 11 061 sheep sequences included in the GenBank database. Gene expression was analyzed in peripheral blood leukocytes since the additional 75/76 bp repeat motif falls within ETAS1, a domain with a possible function in regulation of replication and transcription. The mRNA expression from four mitochondrial genes (COI, cyt b, ND1, and ND2) was analyzed in the two individuals of this study with a fifth repeat motif and in four without it. Although lower transcription was observed when the additional 75/76 bp repeat motif was present, no statistically significant differences were observed. Therefore, the variation in the number of the 75/76 repeat motif does not seem to modify the gene expression rate in mitochondrial genes.

Abstract
In this paper, we present a versatile, dual-purpose sensor for in vitro detection of Enterobacteriaceae (e.g. Escherichia coli) and biotinylated antibodies (e.g. IgG rabbit polyclonal antibodies), based on different detection principles for each bioanalyte. These bioanalytes are tagged individually with functionalized magnetic microparticles, suspended into a static fluid and injected into a microfluidic channel. Without the need for bulk or complicated pumping systems, the functionalized microparticles are set in motion by a magnetic force exerted on them by integrated microconductors. The fundamental detection principle is the decrease in the velocity of the microparticles that are loaded with the respective bioanalyte, due to factors inhibiting their motion. The velocity of the unloaded, bare microparticles is used as a reference. We discovered a novel mechanism on which the constrained particle motion is based; in the case of E. coli, the inhibiting factor is the enhanced Stokes' drag force due to the greater volume and altered hydrodynamic shape, whereas in the case of biotinylated antibodies, it is the increased friction force at the interface between the modified microparticle and the biosensor's surface. Friction force is for the first time employed in a scheme for resolving biomolecules. Integrated magnetic microsensors are used for the velocity measurements by detecting the microparticles' stray field. Moreover, we developed a biocompatible, easy to implement and reliable surface modification that practically diminishes the problem of bioadhesion on the sensor's surface.

Abstract
This paper presents the design, optimization and fabrication of 16 MgO/TiO2 and SiO2/TiO2 based high selective narrow bandpass optical filters. Their performance to extract diffuse reflectance and fluorescence signals from gastrointestinal tissue phantoms was successfully evaluated. The obtained results prove their feasibility to correctly extract those spectroscopic signals, through a Spearman's rank correlation test (Spearman's correlation coefficient higher than 0.981) performed between the original spectra and the ones obtained using those 16 fabricated optical filters. These results are an important step for the implementation of a miniaturized, low-cost and minimal invasive microsystem that could help in the detection of gastrointestinal dysplasia.

Abstract
In prostate brachytherapy treatments, there is an initial swelling of the prostate of the patient due to an oedema related to the insertion of the seeds. The variation of the prostate volume can lead to variations in the final prescribed dose in treatment planning procedures. As such, it is important to understand their influence for dose optimisation purposes. This work reports on a dosimetric study of the swelling of the prostate in prostate brachytherapy using Monte Carlo simulations. Dosimetric measurements performed on a physical anthropomorphic tissue-equivalent prostate phantom and thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) were used to validate the MC model. Finally the MC model was also used to simulate prostate swelling in a real treatment planning procedure. The obtained results indicate that the parameters mentioned above represent a source of uncertainty in dose assessment in prostate brachytherapy, and can be detrimental to a correct dose evaluation in treatment plannings, and that these parameters can be accurately determined by means of MC simulations with a voxel phantom.

Abstract
The work shows a measurement technique to obtain the correct value of the four elements in a resistive Wheatstone bridge without the need to separate the physical connections existing between them. Two electronic solutions are presented, based on a source-and-measure unit and using discrete electronic components. The proposed technique brings the possibility to know the mismatching or the tolerance between the bridge resistive elements and then to pass or reject it in terms of its related common-mode rejection. Experimental results were taken in various Wheatstone resistive bridges (discrete and magnetoresistive integrated bridges) validating the proposed measurement technique specially when the bridge is micro-fabricated and there is no physical way to separate one resistive element from the others.

Abstract
Postnatal overfeeding is a well-known model of early-life induced obesity and glucose intolerance in rats. However, little is known about its impact on insulin signaling in specific brain regions such as the mesocorticolimbic system, and its putative effects on dopamine-related hedonic food intake in adulthood. For this study, rat litters were standardized to 4 (small litter - SL) or 8 pups (control - NL) at postnatal day 1. Weaning was at day 21, and all tests were conducted after day 60 of life in male rats. In Experiment 1, we demonstrated that the SL animals were heavier than the NL at all time points and had decreased AKT/pAKT ratio in the Ventral Tegmental Area (VTA), without differences in the skeletal muscle insulin signaling in response to insulin injection. In Experiment 2, the standard rat chow intake was addressed using an automated system (BioDAQ, Research Diets(®)), and showed no differences between the groups. On the other hand, the SL animals ingested more sweet food in response to the 1 min tail-pinch challenge and did not develop conditioned place preference to sweet food. In Experiment 3 we showed that the SL rats had increased VTA TH content but had no difference in this protein in response to a sweet food challenge, as the NL had. The SL rats also showed decreased levels of dopamine D2 receptors in the nucleus accumbens. Here we showed that early postnatal overfeeding was linked to an altered functioning of the mesolimbic dopamine pathway, which was associated with altered insulin signaling in the VTA, suggesting increased sensitivity, and expression of important proteins of the dopaminergic system.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases. Since glucose is the main fuel of the brain, its levels should be maintained within a narrow range to ensure normal brain function. Indeed, the literature shows that uncontrolled blood glucose levels, whether too high or too low, impact brain structure and function potentiating cognitive impairment. Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are a family of mitochondrial anion carrier proteins located on the inner mitochondrial membrane, and their primary function is to leak protons from the intermembrane space into the mitochondrial matrix. The specific role of neuronal UCPs has been widely discussed and although there is no general agreement, there is a strong conviction that these proteins may be involved in the defense against mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and, consequently, protecting against oxidative damage. The generation of ROS is increasingly recognized as playing an important role in diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders and aging where mitochondria are both sources and targets of these reactive species. This review examines the neurodegenerative events associated with diabetes, highlighting the role of hyperglycemia and/or hypoglycemia on cognitive function. The role of mitochondria, neuronal UCPs and their impact in central nervous system will be elucidated. Finally, we will discuss neuronal UCPs as possible therapeutic targets for the treatment of diabetes-associated central complications and neurodegenerative diseases, namely Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

Abstract
According to World Health Organization estimates, type 2 diabetes (T2D) is an epidemic (particularly in under development countries) and a socio-economic challenge. This is even more relevant since increasing evidence points T2D as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), supporting the hypothesis that AD is a "type 3 diabetes" or "brain insulin resistant state". Despite the limited knowledge on the molecular mechanisms and the etiological complexity of both pathologies, evidence suggests that neurodegeneration/death underlying cognitive dysfunction (and ultimately dementia) upon long-term T2D may arise from a complex interplay between T2D and brain aging. Additionally, decreased brain insulin levels/signaling and glucose metabolism in both pathologies further suggests that an effective treatment strategy for one disorder may be also beneficial in the other. In this regard, one such promising strategy is a novel successful anti-T2D class of drugs, the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) mimetics (e.g. exendin-4 or liraglutide), whose potential neuroprotective effects have been increasingly shown in the last years. In fact, several studies showed that, besides improving peripheral (and probably brain) insulin signaling, GLP-1 analogs minimize cell loss and possibly rescue cognitive decline in models of AD, Parkinson's (PD) or Huntington's disease. Interestingly, exendin-4 is undergoing clinical trials to test its potential as an anti-PD therapy. Herewith, we aim to integrate the available data on the metabolic and neuroprotective effects of GLP-1 mimetics in the central nervous system (CNS) with the complex crosstalk between T2D-AD, as well as their potential therapeutic value against T2D-associated cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
The present work shows an electrical ammeter for laboratory purpose based on a magnetoresistive (MR) spin-valve (SV) sensor. The proposed ammeter measures a 10 A maximum current and offers a maximum frequency response between 150 and 800 kHz depending on the electronics whole gain. These features are due to the use of a new generation MR-SV current sensor and a conditioning electronics that compensates in frequency and temperature the sensor response. With little adjustments in the electronics and changing the position of the sensor with respect to current carrying conductor, the designed instrument is able to measure higher current levels. The work shows the proposed ammeter with its different subsystems and describes the procedure used to test the instrument. Also a discussion of the obtained experimental results is included.

Abstract
Since the fundamental discovery of the giant magnetoresistance many spintronic devices have been developed and implemented in our daily life (e.g. information storage and automotive industry). Lately, advances in the sensors technology (higher sensitivity, smaller size) have potentiated other applications, namely in the biological area, leading to the emergence of novel biomedical platforms. In particular the investigation of spintronics and its application to the development of magnetoresistive (MR) biomolecular and biomedical platforms are giving rise to a new class of biomedical diagnostic devices, suitable for bench top bioassays as well as point-of-care and point-of-use devices. Herein, integrated spintronic biochip platforms for diagnostic and cytometric applications, hybrid systems incorporating magnetoresistive sensors applied to neuroelectronic studies and biomedical imaging, namely magneto-encephalography and magneto-cardiography, are reviewed. Also lab-on-a-chip MR-based platforms to perform biological studies at the single molecule level are discussed. Overall the potential and main characteristics of such MR-based biomedical devices, comparing to the existing technologies while giving particular examples of targeted applications, are addressed.

Abstract
South America and especially the Amazon basin is known to be home to some of the most isolated human groups in the world. Here, we report on a study of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in the Waorani from Ecuador, probably the most warlike human population known to date. Seeking to look in more depth at the characterization of the genetic diversity of this Native American tribe, molecular markers from the X and Y chromosomes were also analyzed. Only three different mtDNA haplotypes were detected among the Waorani sample. One of them, assigned to Native American haplogroup A2, accounted for more than 94% of the total diversity of the maternal gene pool. Our results for sex chromosome molecular markers failed to find close genetic kinship between individuals, further emphasizing the low genetic diversity of the mtDNA. Bearing in mind the results obtained for both the analysis of the mtDNA control region and complete mitochondrial genomes, we suggest the existence of a 'Waorani-specific' mtDNA lineage. According to current knowledge on the phylogeny of haplogroup A2, we propose that this lineage could be designated as subhaplogroup A2s. Its wide predominance among the Waorani people might have been conditioned by severe genetic drift episodes resulting from founding events, long-term isolation and a traditionally small population size most likely associated with the striking ethnography of this Amazonian community. In all, the Waorani constitute a fine example of how genetic imprint may mirror ethnopsychology and sociocultural features in human populations.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases are characterized by distinct clinical manifestations and neuropathological hallmarks, but they also share common features like mitochondrial dysfunction. As strategic organelles in several cellular pathways, including life/death decision, it is crucial to maintain a healthy mitochondrial pool to ensure cellular homeostasis. Macroautophagy is a pathway of lysosomal-dependent degradation of cytosolic portions, such as misfolded proteins or damaged organelles. In the last decade this process has gained new frontiers and is currently seen as a specific, rather than a random process. In this regard the term mitophagy came to describe the selective degradation of mitochondria by autophagy. This review is intended to discuss mitochondrial dysfunction in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. The recent developments on the molecular basis of mitophagy will be also argued. Finally, we will discuss mitophagy as a potential therapeutic target for neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Although conventional state-of-the-art flow cytometry systems provide rapid and reliable analytical capacities, they are bulky, expensive and complex. To overcome these drawbacks modern flow cytometers have been developed with enhanced portability for on-site measurements. Unlike external fluorescent/optical detectors, magnetoresistive sensors are micro-fabricated, can be integrated within microfluidic channels, and can detect magnetically labelled cells. This work describes the real-time detection of single magnetically labelled cells with a magnetoresistive based cell cytometer. For Kg1-a cells magnetically labelled with 50 nm CD34 microbeads (Milteny) flowing through a 150 μm wide, 14 μm high microchannel, with speeds around 1 cm s(-1), bipolar signals with an average amplitude of 10-20 μV were observed corresponding to cell events. The number of cells counted by the spin valve cytometer has been compared with that obtained with a hemocytometer. Both methods agree within the respective error bars.

Abstract
We report an inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy study on MgO magnetic junctions with thin barriers (0.85-1.35 nm). Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy reveals resonant electronic trapping within the barrier for voltages V>0.15 V. These trapping features are associated with defects in the barrier crystalline structure, as confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Such defects are responsible for resonant tunneling due to energy levels that are formed in the barrier. A model was applied to determine the average location and energy level of the traps, indicating that they are mostly located in the middle of the MgO barrier, in accordance with the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy data and trap-assisted tunneling conductance theory. Evidence of the influence of trapping on the voltage dependence of tunnel magnetoresistance is shown.

Abstract
Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometry is an indispensable, reliable, and one of the most widely used techniques for the characterization of nanostructured magnetic materials. Information, such as the magnitude of coercive fields or anisotropy strengths, can be readily obtained from MOKE measurements. We present a description of our state-of-the-art vectorial MOKE magnetometer, being an extremely versatile, accurate, and sensitivity unit with a low cost and comparatively simple setup. The unit includes focusing lenses and an automatized stepper motor stage for angular dependent measurements. The performance of the magnetometer is demonstrated by hysteresis loops of Co thin films displaying uniaxial anisotropy induced on growth, MnIr/CoFe structures exhibiting the so called exchange bias effect, spin valves, and microfabricated flux guides produced by optical lithography.
