Implementation of anaerobic digestion for valorizing the organic fraction of municipal solid waste in developing countries: Technical insights from a systematic review

Anaerobic digestion (AD) as a waste management strategy for the organic fraction of municipal waste (OFMSW) has received attention in developed countries for several decades, leading to the development of large-scale plants. In contrast, AD of OFMSW has only recently drawn attention in developing countries. This systematic review was carried out to investigate the implementation of AD to treat the OFMSW in developing countries, focusing on assessing pilot and full-scale AD plants reported in the last ten years. Studies that met the selection criteria were analyzed and data regarding operating parameters, feedstock characteristics, and biogas, digestate, and energy production were extracted. As outlined in this systematic review, AD plants located in developing countries are mostly one-stage mesophilic systems that treat OFMSW via mono-digestion, almost exclusively with the aim of producing electrical energy. Based on the analysis done throughout this systematic review, it was noted that there is a large difference in the maturity level of AD systems between developing and developed countries, mainly due to the economic capacity of developed countries to invest in sustainable waste management systems. However, the number of AD plants reported in scientific papers is significantly lower than the number of installed AD systems. Research articles regarding large-scale implementation of AD to treat OFMSW in developed countries were analyzed and compared with developing countries. This comparison identified practices used in plants in developed countries that could be utilized in the large-scale implementation and success of AD in developing countries. These practices include exploiting potential products with high market-values, forming partnerships with local industries to use industrial wastes as co-substrates, and exploring different biological and physical pretreatment technologies. Additionally, the analysis of capital and operational costs of AD plants showed that costs tend to be higher for developing countries due to their need to import of materials and equipment from developed countries. Technical, economical, and political challenges for the implementation of AD at a large-scale in developing countries are highlighted.

Co-infection of Leishmania infantum and a Crithidia-related species in a case of refractory relapsed visceral leishmaniasis with non-ulcerated cutaneous manifestation in Brazil

We report a refractory and relapsed visceral leishmaniasis case in a male child patient followed from 2016 to 2020, whose clinical isolates from multiple relapses were analyzed at the genome level. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first report that both visceral leishmaniasis and non-ulcerated cutaneous leishmaniasis have concomitantly manifested in the same patient. Importantly, sequence analysis revealed that the patient was co-infected with Leishmania infantum and a Crithidia-related parasite, which was previously found in a fatal case of visceral leishmaniasis from the same endemic region.

DOES DISCRIMINATION MODERATE THE RELATIONSHIP OF AGE, GENDER, AND RACE WITH HEALTH OUTCOMES IN OLDER ADULTS?

Discrimination and experiences of prejudice are a social determinant of health, with potential consequences at the individual, interpersonal, and systemic levels. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between discrimination experienced by older adults and health outcomes. Data were drawn from 13,290 participants from the Health and Retirement Study, who completed the Leave Behind Questionnaire in 2012 or 2014. Logistic regressions were conducted to examine relationships between age, gender, and race/ethnicity and self-reported health (SRH), risk of stroke, and heart attack. Interaction terms were tested for everyday discrimination and age, gender, and race/ethnicity, then for health discrimination and age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Results found associations between age, gender, and race and SRH, stroke, and heart attack. Everyday discrimination moderated the association between gender and risk of heart attack, where differences in men and women’s risk of heart attack were exacerbated at higher levels of discrimination. Similarly, everyday discrimination moderated the association between race and risk of heart attack, where differences in white and non-white participant’s risk of heart attack were exacerbated at higher levels of discrimination. Experiences of discrimination in healthcare moderated associations between gender and both SRH and heart attack. Reduction in experiences of discrimination in all settings, but especially in healthcare, should be a top priority. Future work in the field of research around discrimination and health outcomes should address the mechanisms that are a product of historical systemic racism, ageism, and misogyny that impact the everyday lives of older adults, people of color, and women.

3'Nucleotidase/nuclease is required for Leishmania infantum clinical isolate susceptibility to miltefosine

BACKGROUND

Miltefosine treatment failure in visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil has been associated with deletion of the miltefosine susceptibility locus (MSL) in Leishmania infantum. The MSL comprises four genes, 3'-nucleotidase/nucleases (NUC1 and NUC2); helicase-like protein (HLP); and 3,2-trans-enoyl-CoA isomerase (TEI).

METHODS

In this study CRISPR-Cas9 was used to either epitope tag or delete NUC1, NUC2, HLP and TEI, to investigate their role in miltefosine resistance mechanisms. Additionally, miltefosine transporter genes and miltefosine-mediated reactive oxygen species homeostasis were assessed in 26 L. infantum clinical isolates. A comparative lipidomic analysis was also performed to investigate the molecular basis of miltefosine resistance.

FINDINGS

Deletion of both NUC1, NUC2 from the MSL was associated with a significant decrease in miltefosine susceptibility, which was restored after re-expression. Metabolomic analysis of parasites lacking the MSL or NUC1 and NUC2 identified an increase in the parasite lipid content, including ergosterol; these lipids may contribute to miltefosine resistance by binding the drug in the membrane. Parasites lacking the MSL are more resistant to lipid metabolism perturbation caused by miltefosine and NUC1 and NUC2 are involved in this pathway. Additionally, L. infantum parasites lacking the MSL isolated from patients who relapsed after miltefosine treatment were found to modulate nitric oxide accumulation in host macrophages.

INTERPRETATION

Altogether, these data indicate that multifactorial mechanisms are involved in natural resistance to miltefosine in L. infantum and that the absence of the 3'nucleotidase/nuclease genes NUC1 and NUC2 contributes to the phenotype.

Investigating a key structural determinant of health, racism, and related social determinants of health in Massachusetts during the COVID-19 pandemic

A disproportionate burden of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is being shouldered by members of racial and ethnic minorities and socially disadvantaged communities. Structural and social determinants of health have been recognized as key contributors to the inequalities observed. Racism, a major structural determinant of health that patterns related social determinants of health, in the USA, warrants further investigation. In this perspective piece we provide an overview of the historical context of racism, followed by preliminary findings from the ongoing COVIDStory study-a cross-sectional study addressing perceptions of COVID-19 and COVID-19 research-that highlights the experiences of non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic identifying adult participants, residing in Worcester Massachusetts, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We then discuss these findings in the context of current and past research considering racism and relevant social determinants of health. Our study results suggest that racism and its residuals (residential segregation, economic insecurity, discrimination, bias, and vigilance) are modern challenges for non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic participants, and these findings are supported by the existing literature. It is our hope that this perspective piece provides additional evidence for action on structural and social determinants affecting the health of minoritized people, especially those living in Massachusetts.

Cumulative exposure to state-level structural sexism and risk of disordered eating: Results from a 20-year prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

Gendered inequities in disordered eating are well-documented, yet few studies have examined their structural drivers. To help fill this gap, we investigated whether cumulative exposure to state-level structural sexism from childhood through young adulthood potentiates differences in disordered eating risk between cisgender girls/women and boys/men.

METHODS

Participants came from the Growing Up Today Study (N = 16,875), a cohort of children aged 9-14 years in 1996 who we followed through 2016. Using a composite index of relevant state policies and social inequalities from the Institute for Women's Policy Research, we categorized states as having high or low levels of structural sexism and summed the number of years participants had lived in a high structural sexism state during the study period to quantify their cumulative exposure. We fit sequential conditional mean models to estimate the effect of cumulative exposure on risk of four outcomes (chronic dieting, purging, binge eating, and overeating), controlling for individual- and state-level confounders via propensity scores. We then tested whether effects differed between girls/women and boys/men by including cumulative-exposure-by-gender-identity interaction terms and calculating the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI).

RESULTS

In the full sample, each additional year of living in a high structural sexism state was associated with a 5% increased risk of purging (95% confidence interval (CI): 3%, 7%), an 8% increased risk of binge eating (95% CI: 6%, 10%), and a 9% increased risk of overeating (95% CI: 8%, 11%). Risk increases were larger on average for girls/women than for boys/men, and girls/women who had lived in a high structural sexism state for four or more years had excess risk of chronic dieting (RERI: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.18, 1.10), purging (RERI: 2.64, 95% CI: 1.24, 4.30), and binge eating (RERI: 2.21, 95% CI: 0.93, 3.50).

CONCLUSIONS

Structural sexism may contribute to inequities in disordered eating between cisgender girls/women and boys/men. Future research should include transgender and gender diverse participants, explore intersectional effects, and identify underlying mechanisms to inform policy-oriented interventions.

Tissue Specific Dual RNA-Seq Defines Host-Parasite Interplay in Murine Visceral Leishmaniasis Caused by Leishmania donovani and Leishmania infantum

Visceral leishmaniasis is associated with hepato-splenomegaly and altered immune and hematological parameters in both preclinical animal models and humans. We studied mouse experimental visceral leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum and Leishmania donovani in BALB/c mice using dual RNA-seq to investigate the transcriptional response of host and parasite in liver and spleen. We identified only 4 species-specific parasite expressed genes (SSPEGs; log2FC >1, FDR <0.05) in the infected spleen, and none in the infected liver. For the host transcriptome, we found 789 differentially expressed genes (DEGs; log2FC >1, FDR <0.05) in the spleen that were common to both infections, with IFNγ signaling and complement and coagulation cascade pathways highly enriched, and an additional 286 and 186 DEGs that were selective to L. donovani and L. infantum infection, respectively. Among those, there were network interactions between genes of amino acid metabolism and PPAR signaling in L. donovani infection and increased IL1β and positive regulation of fatty acid transport in L. infantum infection, although no pathway enrichment was observed. In the liver, there were 1,939 DEGs in mice infected with either L. infantum or L. donovani in comparison to uninfected mice, and the most enriched pathways were IFNγ signaling, neutrophil mediated immunity, complement and coagulation, cytokine-chemokine responses, and hemostasis. Additionally, 221 DEGs were selective in L. donovani and 429 DEGs in L. infantum infections. These data show that the host response for these two visceral leishmaniasis infection models is broadly similar, and ∼10% of host DEGs vary in infections with either parasite species. IMPORTANCE Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is caused by two species of Leishmania parasites, L. donovani in the Old World and L. infantum in the New World and countries bordering the Mediterranean. Although cardinal features such as hepato-splenomegaly and alterations in blood and immune function are evident, clinical presentation may vary by geography, with for example severe bleeding often associated with VL in Brazil. Although animal models of both L. donovani and L. infantum have been widely used to study disease pathogenesis, a direct side-by-side comparison of how these parasites species impact the infected host and/or how they might respond to the stresses of mammalian infection has not been previously reported. Identifying common and distinct pathways to pathogenesis will be important to ensure that new therapeutic or prophylactic approaches will be applicable across all forms of VL.

Mission, Organization and Future Direction of the Serological Sciences Network for COVID-19 (SeroNet) Epidemiologic Cohort Studies

Global efforts are needed to elucidate the epidemiology of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the underlying cause of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) including seroprevalence, risk factors and long-term sequelae, as well as immune responses following vaccination across populations and the social dimensions of prevention and treatment strategies. In the U.S., the National Cancer Institute in partnership with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, established the SARS-CoV-2 Serological Sciences Network (SeroNet) as the nation’s largest coordinated effort to study COVID-19. The network is comprised of multidisciplinary researchers bridging gaps and fostering collaborations between immunologists, epidemiologists, virologists, clinicians and clinical laboratories, social and behavioral scientists, policy makers, data scientists, and community members. In total, 49 institutions form the SeroNet consortium to study individuals with cancer, autoimmune disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, cardiovascular diseases, HIV, transplant recipients, as well as otherwise healthy pregnant women, children, college students, and high-risk occupational workers (including health care workers and first responders). Several studies focus on underrepresented populations, including ethnic minorities and rural communities. To support integrative data analyses across SeroNet studies, efforts are underway to define common data elements for standardized serology measurements, cellular and molecular assays, self-reported data, treatment, and clinical outcomes. In this paper, we discuss the overarching framework for SeroNet epidemiology studies, critical research questions under investigation, and data accessibility for the worldwide scientific community. Lessons learned will help inform preparedness and responsiveness to future emerging diseases.

Case Report: The effect of intravenous and oral antibiotics on the gut microbiome and breath volatile organic compounds over one year

BACKGROUND

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global concern and better understanding of the gut microbiome, a known 'amplifier' of AMR, may allow future clinicians to tailor therapy to minimise this risk and offer a personalised medicine approach. To examine the gut microbiome, patients are required to provide faecal samples; more convenient and cheaper solutions need to be found.

METHODS

As part of a pilot study looking at how routes of administration affect the gut microbiome in NHS patients undergoing routine clinical management for infections, we hypothesised that effects on the gut microbiome varied with the route and metabolism of antibiotic used, and these changes may be reflected in breath metabolites. We present a case report of a patient with an unusual clinical history, alongside breath metabolite and gut microbiome data taken before, during and after antibiotic therapy over a period of one year.

RESULTS

We noted a shift in the dominant Bacteroides strain in the patient's gut microbiome between pre- and post-therapy samples, along with an alteration in the composition of breath metabolites.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides a framework for similar future work and highlights the need for further research on the relationships between changes in microbial gut communities and antimicrobial exposure, patient clinical status, and the metabolites of human breath.

Navigating Black Aging: The Impact of Stress and the Power of Resilience in Promoting Health

The health profile of African Americans clearly shows that stress works to worsen chronic conditions. To improve the health of aging African Americans, interventions need to address how effects of stress are reduced by individual resilience factors and exacerbated by anxiety or other traits. We will characterize the effects of stress by measuring rate of biological aging (RBA) over thirty years in a Black cohort (aged 18-30 at baseline) of approximately 2,000 individuals from the longitudinal CARDIA study. Biological aging (BA) captures premature physiological aging beyond that predicted by an individual’s chronological age. RBA will be characterized by within person change in BA over 30 years. We will measure the association between RBA and anxiety and will further measure the extent to which various forms of individual resilience factors mitigate the effects of anxiety on BA. We will also explore how intersectionality is evinced in sex differences in RBA.

Candidates for Balancing Selection in Leishmania donovani Complex Parasites

The Leishmania donovani species complex is the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis, which cause 20–40,000 fatalities a year. Here, we conduct a screen for balancing selection in this species complex. We used 384 publicly available L. donovani and L. infantum genomes, and sequence 93 isolates of L. infantum from Brazil to describe the global diversity of this species complex. We identify five genetically distinct populations that are sufficiently represented by genomic data to search for signatures of selection. We find that signals of balancing selection are generally not shared between populations, consistent with transient adaptive events, rather than long-term balancing selection. We then apply multiple diversity metrics to identify candidate genes with robust signatures of balancing selection, identifying a curated set of 24 genes with robust signatures. These include zeta toxin, nodulin-like, and flagellum attachment proteins. This study highlights the extent of genetic divergence between L. donovani complex parasites and provides genes for further study.

Early reduction in PD-L1 expression predicts faster treatment response in human cutaneous leishmaniasis

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is caused by Leishmania donovani in Sri Lanka. Pentavalent antimonials (e.g., sodium stibogluconate [SSG]) remain first-line drugs for CL with no new effective treatments emerging. We studied whole blood and lesion transcriptomes from Sri Lankan patients with CL at presentation and during SSG treatment. From lesions but not whole blood, we identified differential expression of immune-related genes, including immune checkpoint molecules, after onset of treatment. Using spatial profiling and RNA-FISH, we confirmed reduced expression of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) proteins on treatment in lesions of a second validation cohort and further demonstrated significantly higher expression of these checkpoint molecules on parasite-infected compared with noninfected lesional CD68+ monocytes and macrophages. Crucially, early reduction in PD-L1 but not IDO1 expression was predictive of rate of clinical cure (HR = 4.88) and occurred in parallel with reduction in parasite load. Our data support a model whereby the initial anti-leishmanial activity of antimonial drugs alleviates checkpoint inhibition on T cells, facilitating immune-drug synergism and clinical cure. Our findings demonstrate that PD-L1 expression can be used as a predictor of rapidity of clinical response to SSG treatment in Sri Lanka and support further evaluation of PD-L1 as a host-directed therapeutic in leishmaniasis.

The genome of the zoonotic malaria parasite Plasmodium simium reveals adaptations to host switching

BACKGROUND

Plasmodium simium, a malaria parasite of non-human primates (NHP), was recently shown to cause zoonotic infections in humans in Brazil. We sequenced the P. simium genome to investigate its evolutionary history and to identify any genetic adaptions that may underlie the ability of this parasite to switch between host species.

RESULTS

Phylogenetic analyses based on whole genome sequences of P. simium from humans and NHPs reveals that P. simium is monophyletic within the broader diversity of South American Plasmodium vivax, suggesting P. simium first infected NHPs as a result of a host switch of P. vivax from humans. The P. simium isolates show the closest relationship to Mexican P. vivax isolates. Analysis of erythrocyte invasion genes reveals differences between P. vivax and P. simium, including large deletions in the Duffy-binding protein 1 (DBP1) and reticulocyte-binding protein 2a genes of P. simium. Analysis of P. simium isolated from NHPs and humans revealed a deletion of 38 amino acids in DBP1 present in all human-derived isolates, whereas NHP isolates were multi-allelic.

CONCLUSIONS

Analysis of the P. simium genome confirmed a close phylogenetic relationship between P. simium and P. vivax, and suggests a very recent American origin for P. simium. The presence of the DBP1 deletion in all human-derived isolates tested suggests that this deletion, in combination with other genetic changes in P. simium, may facilitate the invasion of human red blood cells and may explain, at least in part, the basis of the recent zoonotic infections.

A Latent Approach to Understanding Pain in Nursing Home Residents Who are Unable to Self-Report Pain

Context

Pain assessment in people with cognitive impairment is challenging.

Objective

The study sought to 1) identify pain subgroups based on staff-assessed pain, agitated and reactive behavior, functional status, and symptoms of depression; and 2) understand if cognitive impairment was associated with transitions between pain subgroups at nursing home admission, 3 months, and 6 months.

Methods

Using national Minimum Data Set 3.0 data (2011–2016), we included 26,816 newly admitted residents with staff-assessed pain at admission, 3 months, and 6 months. Pain subgroups were identified by latent class analysis at each time point. Transitions between pain subgroups were described using latent transition analysis.

Results

Five latent statuses of pain were identified at admission: “Behavioral and Severe Depression” (prevalence stable, severe or worsening cognitive impairment: 11%, mild/moderate or improved cognitive impairment: 10%), “Functional” (21%; 25%), “Physical” (22%; 23%), “Behavioral” (23%, 19%), and “Low” (23%; 24%). Regardless of change in cognitive status, most residents remained in the same pain latent class. Among residents with stable, severe or worsening cognitive impairment, 11% in the “Behavioral” class transitioned to the “Behavioral and Severe Depression” class by 3 months. Fewer residents transitioned between latent classes in the 3- to 6-month period (>80% remained in their 3-month class).

Conclusion

For nursing home residents unable to self-report pain, consideration of additional indicators including functioning, depressive symptoms, and agitation may be useful in identifying pain subgroups. Longitudinal changes in the pain subgroups over 6 months post-admission highlight that residents with severe cognitive impairment may be at risk for worsening pain.

Experimental Selection of Paromomycin Resistance in Leishmania donovani Amastigotes Induces Variable Genomic Polymorphisms

The relatively high post-treatment relapse rates of paromomycin (PMM) in visceral leishmaniasis treatment and the swift emergence of experimental drug resistance challenge its broad application and urge for rational use and monitoring of resistance. However, no causal molecular mechanisms to Leishmania PMM resistance have been identified so far. To gain insights into potential resistance mechanisms, twelve experimentally selected Leishmania donovani clonal lines and the non-cloned preselection population, with variable degrees of PMM resistance, were subjected to whole genome sequencing. To identify genomic variations potentially associated with resistance, SNPs, Indels, chromosomal somy and gene copy number variations were compared between the different parasite lines. A total of 11 short nucleotide variations and the copy number alterations in 39 genes were correlated to PMM resistance. Some of the identified genes are involved in transcription, translation and protein turn-over (transcription elongation factor-like protein, RNA-binding protein, ribosomal protein L1a, 60S ribosomal protein L6, eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E-1, proteasome regulatory non-ATP-ase subunit 3), virulence (major surface protease gp63, protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1-like protein), mitochondrial function (ADP/ATP mitochondrial carrier-like protein), signaling (phosphatidylinositol 3-related kinase, protein kinase putative and protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1-like protein) and vesicular trafficking (ras-related protein RAB1). These results indicate that, in Leishmania, the aminoglycoside PMM affects protein translational processes and underlines the complex and probably multifactorial origin of resistance.

Aging and COVID-19 in Minority Populations: a Perfect Storm

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

COVID-19 is a major concern for the health and wellbeing of individuals worldwide. As COVID-19 cases and deaths continue to increase in the USA, aging Black and Hispanic populations have emerged as especially at-risk for increased exposure to COVID-19 and susceptibility to severe health outcomes. The current review discusses the weathering hypothesis and the influence of social inequality on the identified health disparities.

RECENT FINDINGS

Aging minoritized populations have endured structural and social inequality over the lifecourse. Consequently, these populations experience weathering, a process that results in physiological dysregulation due to stress associated with persistent disadvantage. Through weathering and continued inequity, aging minoritized populations have an increased risk of exposure and poor health outcomes from COVID-19.

SUMMARY

Current literature and available data suggests that aging minoritized persons experience high rates of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. The current review hypothesizes and supports that observed disparities are the result of inequalities that especially affect Black and Hispanic populations over the lifecourse. Future efforts to address these disparities should emphasize research that supports governments in identifying at-risk groups, providing accessible COVID-19-related information to those groups, and implementing policy that addresses the structural and social inequities that perpetuate current COVID-19 disparities.

Racial/Ethnic Differences in Staff-Assessed Pain Behaviors Among Newly Admitted Nursing Home Residents

CONTEXT

Nonverbal pain behaviors are effective indicators of pain among persons who have difficulty communicating. In nursing homes, racial/ethnic differences in self-reported pain and pain management have been documented.

OBJECTIVES

We sought to examine racial/ethnic differences in nonverbal pain behaviors and pain management among residents with staff-assessed pain.

METHODS

We used the U.S. national Minimum Data Set 3.0 and identified 994,510 newly admitted nursing home residents for whom staff evaluated pain behaviors and pain treatments between 2010 and 2016. Adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% CIs estimated using robust Poisson models compared pain behaviors and treatments across racial/ethnic groups.

RESULTS

Vocal complaints were most commonly recorded (18.3% non-Hispanic black residents, 19.3% of Hispanic residents, and 30.3% of non-Hispanic white residents). Documentation of pain behaviors was less frequent among non-Hispanic black and Hispanic residents than non-Hispanic white residents (e.g., vocal complaints: aPR_Black: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.73-0.78; with similar estimates for other pain behaviors). Non-Hispanic blacks (47.3%) and Hispanics (48.6%) were less likely to receive any type of pharmacologic pain intervention compared with non-Hispanic white residents (59.3%) (aPR_Black: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.86-0.88; aPR_Hispanics: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.84-0.89).

CONCLUSION

Among residents requiring staff assessment of pain because they are unable to self-report, nursing home staff documented pain and its treatment less often in Non-Hispanic blacks and Hispanics than in non-Hispanic white residents. Studies to understand the role of differences in expression of pain, explicit bias, and implicit bias are needed to inform interventions to reduce disparities in pain documentation and treatment.

Chromosomal assembly of the nuclear genome of the endosymbiont-bearing trypanosomatid Angomonas deanei

Angomonas deanei is an endosymbiont-bearing trypanosomatid with several highly fragmented genome assemblies and unknown chromosome number. We present an assembly of the A. deanei nuclear genome based on Oxford Nanopore sequence that resolves into 29 complete or close-to-complete chromosomes. The assembly has several previously unknown special features; it has a supernumerary chromosome, a chromosome with a 340-kb inversion, and there is a translocation between two chromosomes. We also present an updated annotation of the chromosomal genome with 10,365 protein-coding genes, 59 transfer RNAs, 26 ribosomal RNAs, and 62 noncoding RNAs.

Physiological Dysregulation and Aging: Implications for Health Equity

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are a major public health issue that affect the magnitude and prognosis of many diseases in the U.S., including cardiovascular disease and cognitive disorders of aging. These associations are especially deleterious among minority persons in the US due to consistently unfavorable social determinants in this population including socioeconomic position, residential segregation, and quality of education. Physiological dysregulation measures the “true global state” of an individual that includes, but goes beyond, chronological age, reflects the health burden produced, in part, by SDOH, and is associated with the development and prognosis of disease. A better understanding of how and when physiological dysregulation occurs may allow us to prevent or reverse dysregulation among the most vulnerable aging populations leading to improved health equity in cardiovascular and cognitive outcomes.

Oral and maxillofacial dental care professionals in critical care during the COVID-19 pandemic

At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic there was a ‘call to arms’ across the oral and maxillofacial staff. This article reports on the extended role of the department's dental care professionals (DCPs) and the tremendous opportunity and value that temporary redeployment presented.

Cardiovascular risk factors and accelerated cognitive decline in midlife: The CARDIA Study

OBJECTIVE

Increasing evidence supports an association between midlife cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) and risk of dementia, but less is known about whether CVRFs influence cognition in midlife. We examined the relationship between CVRFs and midlife cognitive decline.

METHODS

In 2,675 black and white middle-aged adults (mean age 50.2 ± 3.6 years, 57% female, 45% black), we measured CVRFs at baseline: hypertension (31%), diabetes mellitus (11%), obesity (43%), high cholesterol (9%), and current cigarette smoking (15%). We administered cognitive tests of memory, executive function, and processing speed at baseline and 5 years later. Using logistic regression, we estimated the association of CVRFs with accelerated cognitive decline (race-specific decline ≥1.5 SD from the mean change) on a composite cognitive score.

RESULTS

Five percent (n = 143) of participants had accelerated cognitive decline over 5 years. Smoking, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus were associated with an increased likelihood of accelerated decline after multivariable adjustment (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.65, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00-2.71; AOR 1.87, 95% CI 1.26-2.75; AOR 2.45, 95% CI 1.54-3.88, respectively), while obesity and high cholesterol were not associated with risk of decline. These results were similar when stratified by race. The likelihood of accelerated decline also increased with greater number of CVRFs (1-2 CVRFs: AOR 1.77, 95% CI 1.02-3.05; ≥3 CVRFs: AOR 2.94, 95% CI 1.64-5.28) and with Framingham Coronary Heart Disease Risk Score ≥10 (AOR 2.29, 95% CI 1.21-4.34).

CONCLUSIONS

Midlife CVRFs, especially hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and smoking, are common and associated with accelerated cognitive decline at midlife. These results identify potential modifiable targets to prevent midlife cognitive decline and highlight the need for a life course approach to cognitive function and aging.

Tissue-specific transcriptomic changes associated with AmBisome® treatment of BALB/c mice with experimental visceral leishmaniasis

Background: Liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome®) as a treatment modality for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has had significant impact on patient care in some but not all regions where VL is endemic.  As the mode of action of AmBisome® in vivo is poorly understood, we compared the tissue-specific transcriptome in drug-treated vs untreated mice with experimental VL.    Methods:  BALB/c mice infected with L. donovani were treated with 8mg/kg AmBisome®, resulting in parasite elimination from liver and spleen over a 7-day period. At day 1 and day 7 post treatment (R x+1 and R x+7), transcriptomic profiling was performed on spleen and liver tissue from treated and untreated mice and uninfected mice.  BALB/c mice infected with M. bovis BCG (an organism resistant to amphotericin B) were analysed to distinguish between direct effects of AmBisome® and those secondary to parasite death.   Results: AmBisome® treatment lead to rapid parasitological clearance.  At R x+1, spleen and liver displayed only 46 and 88 differentially expressed (DE) genes (P<0.05; 2-fold change) respectively. In liver, significant enrichment was seen for pathways associated with TNF, fatty acids and sterol biosynthesis.  At R x+7, the number of DE genes was increased (spleen, 113; liver 400).  In spleen, these included many immune related genes known to be involved in anti-leishmanial immunity. In liver, changes in transcriptome were largely accounted for by loss of granulomas.   PCA analysis indicated that treatment only partially restored homeostasis.  Analysis of BCG-infected mice treated with AmBisome® revealed a pattern of immune modulation mainly targeting macrophage function.   Conclusions: Our data indicate that the tissue response to AmBisome® treatment varies between target organs and that full restoration of homeostasis is not achieved at parasitological cure.  The pathways required to restore homeostasis deserve fuller attention, to understand mechanisms associated with treatment failure and relapse and to promote more rapid restoration of immune competence.

A Comparison of Variances in Age Cohorts to Understand Longevity in African Americans

BACKGROUND

African American life expectancy at age 65 is about 2 years less than that of Caucasians, but by age 85, African Americans may have a longevity advantage. One possible explanation for this cross-over effect is that African Americans who make it to the oldest ages have done so by handling stressful contextual and health disadvantages. The purpose of this study was to examine possible within group cohort differences that lead to exceptional longevity among older African Americans.

METHODS

Data came from three cohorts of older African Americans: the Carolina African American Twin Study of Aging (CAATSA), the Baltimore Study of Black Aging-Patterns of Cognitive Aging (BSBA-PCA), and the Study of Longevity and Stress in African American Families (SOLSAA). Of the 533 participants, we compared two age cohorts (60-79 and 80+) with an average age of 73.2 (SD = 8.33) and 26.3% are men. Variables included measures of stress, depression, coping, cognition, and health indicators.

RESULTS

The variance for depression and average peak expiratory flow (APEF) was significantly larger for the older cohort but after controlling for demographic factors, the measure of depressive symptoms was not. The Alpha Span test showed a significant difference with the older cohort having larger variances after controlling for demographic factors.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that there are changes in the characteristics of who makes it to later life, but counter to our hypothesis, there was greater variability in the oldest group relative to the younger.

Risk of disordered eating at the intersection of gender and racial/ethnic identity among U.S. high school students

BACKGROUND

Gender and racial/ethnic disparities in disordered eating among youth exist, although whether having multiple marginalized identities disproportionately increases risk is unclear. Therefore, we aimed to quantify the risk of disordered eating associated with intersecting gender and racial/ethnic identities of U.S. adolescents.

METHODS

We analyzed data from 11,514 U.S. high school students identifying as White, Black/African American, or Hispanic/Latino who participated in the 2013 National Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. Age-adjusted relative risks (RR) of purging, fasting, diet pill use, and any disordered eating were estimated using log-binomial models. Relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) was estimated to evaluate the degree to which the combined effect of marginalized gender and racial/ethnic identity was larger than the sum of their individual effects.

RESULTS

Disordered eating was prevalent (girls: 20.4% Black/African American, 29.2% Hispanic/Latina, 21.4% White; boys: 13.4% Black/African American, 12.4% Hispanic/Latino; 8.1% Whites). Girls of all racial/ethnic identities and racial/ethnic minority boys had elevated risks of purging, fasting, and any disordered eating compared to White boys (RR range = 1.57-7.43); Hispanic/Latina and White girls also had elevated risk of diet pill use (RR range = 1.98-3.20). Among Hispanic/Latina girls, positive interaction between gender and race/ethnicity produced excess risk of any disordered eating and purging (RERI: any = 0.42 (95% confidence interval (CI) = -0.02, 0.87); purging = 1.74 (95% CI = 0.06, 3.42).

CONCLUSIONS

Findings illustrate the advantages of adopting an intersectional approach to disordered eating research. Future research should investigate the mechanisms of these disparities.

Intersectional effects of racial and gender discrimination on cardiovascular health vary among black and white women and men in the CARDIA study

Testing hypotheses from the emerging Identity Pathology (IP) framework, we assessed race-gender differences in the effects of reporting experiences of racial and gender discrimination simultaneously compared with racial or gender discrimination alone, or no discrimination, on future cardiovascular health (CVH). Data were from a sample of 3758 black or white adults in CARDIA, a community-based cohort recruited in Birmingham, AL; Chicago, IL; Minneapolis, MN, and Oakland, CA in 1985-6 (year 0). Racial and gender discrimination were assessed using the Experiences of Discrimination scale. CVH was evaluated using a 12-point composite outcome modified from the Life's Simple 7, with higher scores indicating better health. Multivariable linear regressions were used to evaluate the associations between different perceptions of discrimination and CVH scores two decades later by race and gender simultaneously. Reporting racial and gender discrimination in ≥2 settings were 48% of black women, 42% of black men, 10% of white women, and 5% of white men. Year 30 CVH scores (mean, SD) were 7.9(1.4), 8.1(1.6), 8.8(1.6), and 8.7(1.3), respectively. Compared with those of their race-gender groups reporting no discrimination, white women reporting only gender-based discrimination saw an adjusted score difference of +0.3 (95% CI: 0.0,0.6), whereas white men reporting only racial discrimination had on average a 0.4 (95% CI: 0.1,0.8) higher score, and scores among white men reporting both racial and gender discrimination were on average 0.6 (95% CI: 1.1,-0.1) lower than those of their group reporting no discrimination. Consistent with predictions of the IP model, the associations of reported racial and gender discrimination with future CVH were different for different racially-defined gender groups. More research is needed to understand why reported racial and gender discrimination might better predict deterioration in CVH for whites than blacks, and what additional factors associated with gender and race contribute variability to CVH among these groups.

The mRNA-bound Proteome of Leishmania mexicana: Novel Genetic Insight into an Ancient Parasite

Leishmania parasite infections, termed the leishmaniases, cause significant global infectious disease burden. The lifecycle of the parasite embodies three main stages that require precise coordination of gene regulation to survive environmental shifts between sandfly and mammalian hosts. Constitutive transcription in kinetoplastid parasites means that gene regulation is overwhelmingly reliant on post-transcriptional mechanisms, yet strikingly few Leishmania trans-regulators are known. Using optimized crosslinking and deep, quantified mass spectrometry, we present a comprehensive analysis of 1400 mRNA binding proteins (mRBPs) and whole cell proteomes from the three main Leishmania lifecycle stages. Supporting the validity, although the crosslinked RBPome is magnitudes more enriched, the protein identities of the crosslinked and non-crosslinked RBPomes were nearly identical. Moreover, multiple candidate RBPs were endogenously tagged and found to associate with discrete mRNA target pools in a stage-specific manner. Results indicate that in L. mexicana parasites, mRNA levels are not a strong predictor of the whole cell expression or RNA binding potential of encoded proteins. Evidence includes a low correlation between transcript and corresponding protein expression and stage-specific variation in protein expression versus RNA binding potential. Unsurprisingly, RNA binding protein enrichment correlates strongly with relative replication efficiency of the specific lifecycle stage. Our study is the first to quantitatively define and compare the mRBPome of multiple stages in kinetoplastid parasites. It provides novel, in-depth insight into the trans-regulatory mRNA:Protein (mRNP) complexes that drive Leishmania parasite lifecycle progression.

Although the immune response to Leishmania donovani infection in mice has been extensively characterized, transcriptomic analysis capturing the tissue-specific evolution of disease has yet to be reported. Methods: We provide an analysis of the transcriptome of spleen, liver and peripheral blood of BALB/c mice infected with L. donovani. Where possible, we compare our data in murine experimental visceral leishmaniasis with transcriptomic data in the public domain obtained from the study of L. donovani-infected hamsters and patients with human visceral leishmaniasis. Digitised whole slide images showing the histopathology in spleen and liver are made available via a dedicated website, www.leishpathnet.org. Results: Our analysis confirms marked tissue-specific alterations in the transcriptome of infected mice over time and identifies previously unrecognized parallels and differences between murine, hamster and human responses to infection. We show commonality of interferon-regulated genes whilst confirming a greater activation of type 2 immune pathways in infected hamsters compared to mice. Cytokine genes and genes encoding immune checkpoints were markedly tissue specific and dynamic in their expression, and pathways focused on non-immune cells reflected tissue specific immunopathology. Our data also addresses the value of measuring peripheral blood transcriptomics as a potential window into underlying systemic disease.  Conclusions: Our transcriptomic data, coupled with histopathologic analysis of the tissue response, provide an additional resource to underpin future mechanistic studies and to guide clinical research.

Racial differences in weathering and its associations with psychosocial stress: The CARDIA study

Biological age (BA) is a construct that captures accelerated biological aging attributable to "wear and tear" from various exposures; we measured BA and weathering, defined as the difference between BA and chronological age, and their associations with race and psychosocial factors in a middle-aged bi-racial cohort. We used data from the Coronary Artery Risk in Young Adults study (CARDIA), conducted in 4 U.S. cities from 1985-2016 to examine weathering for adults aged 48-60 years. We estimated BA via the Klemera and Doubal method using selected biomarkers. We assessed overall and race-specific associations between weathering and psychosocial measures. For the 2694 participants included, Blacks had a BA (SD) that was 2.6 (11.8) years older than their chronological age while the average BA among Whites was 3.5 (10.0) years younger than their chronological age (Blacks weathered 6.1 years faster than Whites). Belonging to more social groups was associated with less weathering in Blacks but not Whites, and after multivariable adjustment, lower SES and more depressive symptoms were associated with more weathering among Blacks than among Whites. We confirmed racial differences in weathering, and newly documented that similar psychosocial factors may take a greater toll on the biological health of Blacks than Whites.

A Breast Screening Shawl to Help Aboriginal Women Feel More Comfortable and Culturally Safe

Background: It is recommended that Australian women aged 50-74 have a breast screen every two years. Aboriginal women have lower breast screening participation than the general population, and face barriers at a system, service and individual level including: • Cultural: lack of cultural awareness/safety at screening services • Fear: historical apprehension about health services due to the after effects of colonization and intergenerational trauma • Shame: feeling embarrassment/shame at being undressed in front of a stranger • Past experience: having a past unpleasant breast screen, or hearing about someone else' • Knowledge: lack of knowledge about screening • Logistics: not knowing service provider locations or limited access to transport During a 2016 project between BreastScreen Victoria (BSV) and Women's Health West, Aboriginal women discussed the need for a shawl to cover them during screening. This idea is based on a successful New Zealand model. Based on this, the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS), Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organization (VACCHO) and BSV formed a partnership to trial a breast screening shawl with Aboriginal women. A key principle underpinning the project is that success will reflect the degree to which this is an Aboriginal-led initiative, driven by the needs of Aboriginal women, and steered by community-based Aboriginal health organizations. Project aims: • Assess whether a cultural, strength based screening process increases engagement of Aboriginal women • Determine whether a screening shawl enhances comfort and culturally safety • Encourage breast screening services to develop culturally safe screening practices • Develop a flexible model that can be easily adapted by other Aboriginal health services to reproduce the shawl, in recognition of the diversity of Aboriginal communities Methods: This project adopted the following strategies: • A project steering group was established • The shawl will be trialled via a group booking at one BSV clinic • Before the group booking, BSV clinic staff will attend culturally safety training • On the trial day, women will attend an information session at VAHS about breast screening and receive their shawl, travel to the BSV clinic together for screening, and return to VAHS to discuss their experiences Results: The trial will be fully evaluated in 2018 to determine whether project aims were achieved. Conclusion: Key learnings to date are: • Breast screening interventions for Aboriginal women must be community-led to ensure they are culturally appropriate, safe and acceptable • Aboriginal women face a number of barriers to breast screening at a system, service and individual level • Health services play a critical role in adopting culturally safe screening practices • Developing a flexible model that can be easily adapted by other Aboriginal health services is critical in ensuring the sustainability and acceptability of the shawl.

A Leishmania infantum genetic marker associated with miltefosine treatment failure for visceral leishmaniasis

Background

Miltefosine has been used successfully to treat visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in India, but it was unsuccessful for VL in a clinical trial in Brazil.

Methods

To identify molecular markers that predict VL treatment failure whole genome sequencing of 26 L. infantum isolates, from cured and relapsed patients allowed a GWAS analysis of SNPs, gene and chromosome copy number variations.

Findings

A strong association was identified (p = 0·0005) between the presence of a genetically stable L. infantumMiltefosine Sensitivity Locus (MSL), and a positive response to miltefosine treatment. The risk of treatment failure increased 9·4-fold (95% CI 2·11–53·54) when an isolate did not have the MSL. The complete absence of the MSL predicted miltefosine failure with 0·92 (95% CI 0·65–0·996) sensitivity and 0·78 (95% CI 0·52–0·92) specificity. A genotyping survey of L. infantum (n = 157) showed that the frequency of MSL varies in a cline from 95% in North East Brazil to <5% in the South East. The MSL was found in the genomes of all L. infantum and L. donovani sequenced isolates from the Old World (n = 671), where miltefosine can have a cure rate higher than 93%.

Interpretation

Knowledge on the presence or absence of the MSL in L. infantum will allow stratification of patients prior to treatment, helping to establish better therapeutic strategies for VL treatment.

Association between binge eating and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in two pediatric community mental health clinics

OBJECTIVE

Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been linked with obesity; however its relationship with binge eating (BE) is less clear. We aimed to explore the associations among ADHD, weight, and BE in pediatric mental health clinics.

METHOD

We retrospectively reviewed consecutive intakes in two pediatric mental health clinics (N = 252). BE was assessed using the C-BEDS scale. Associations between ADHD, BE, and BMI-z score were assessed via regression.

RESULTS

Mean age was 10.8 (3.7 SD) years. Twelve percent (n = 31) had BE. The association between ADHD and BE was statistically significant (OR 16.1, p < .001), and persisted after adjusting for comorbid diagnoses, medications, demographic variables, and clinic. There was a statistically significant association between ADHD and BMI z-scores (β = 0.54, p < .001). After adjusting for BE, the relationship between ADHD and BMI z-scores was attenuated (β = 0.35, p = .025), and the coefficient for BE was decreased (β = 0.75, p = .001). Although stimulant use was associated with a three-fold increase in odds of BE (OR 3.16, p = .006), stimulants were not associated with greater BMI-z scores (β = 0.18, p = .32).

DISCUSSION

There was a significant association between ADHD and BE in two pediatric mental health clinics. Although these data are cross-sectional, and cannot be used to make causal inferences, these findings are compatible with the hypothesis that BE partially mediates the association between ADHD and BMI z-scores. In mental health clinics, children with ADHD may present as overweight or obese. Further, children with ADHD may exhibit BE. Future prospective studies should elucidate the complex relationships among ADHD, weight, stimulants, and BE.

Myasthenia gravis in Jamaican children: a 12-year institutional review

BACKGROUND

Myasthenia gravis is uncommon in children. The clinical characteristics in children of the English-speaking Caribbean have not been documented previously.

OBJECTIVE

To describe the clinical characteristics and outcome of children with myasthenia gravis at two tertiary hospitals in Jamaica.

METHODS

The case-notes of all children with a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis managed at the University Hospital of the West Indies and Bustamante Hospital for Children between January 1994 and December 2005 were reviewed.

RESULTS

There were 34 children; mean age of onset of illness was 7.5 years and mean period of follow-up was 38.5 months. The male-to-female ratio was 1:1.3. Nineteen (59%) presented with ocular manifestations; 47% of these developed signs of generalised involvement. Most were treated with pyridostigmine and prednisone. Eight patients had thymectomy. Four patients (12%) entered remission. There were two deaths.

CONCLUSIONS

Myasthenia gravis in Jamaican children is similar to that in other populations. It is more common in female children. Most children present with ocular manifestations and remission occurs infrequently.

Search for maximal flavor violating scalars in same-charge lepton pairs in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV

Models of maximal flavor violation (MxFV) in elementary particle physics may contain at least one new scalar SU(2) doublet field Phi(FV)=(eta(0),eta(+)) that couples the first and third generation quarks (q_(1), q_(3)) via a Lagrangian term L(FV)=xi(13)Phi(FV)q(1)q(3). These models have a distinctive signature of same-charge top-quark pairs and evade flavor-changing limits from meson mixing measurements. Data corresponding to 2 fb(-1) collected by the Collider Dectector at Fermilab II detector in pp[over ] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV are analyzed for evidence of the MxFV signature. For a neutral scalar eta(0) with m_(eta;(0))=200 GeV/c(2) and coupling xi(13)=1, approximately 11 signal events are expected over a background of 2.1+/-1.8 events. Three events are observed in the data, consistent with background expectations, and limits are set on the coupling xi(13) for m(eta(0)=180-300 GeV/c(2).

Search for doubly charged Higgs bosons with lepton-flavor-violating decays involving tau leptons

We search for pair production of doubly charged Higgs particles (H+/- +/-) followed by decays into electron-tau (etau) and muon-tau (mutau) pairs using data (350 pb(-1) collected from [over]pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV by the CDF II experiment. We search separately for cases where three or four final-state leptons are detected, and combine results for exclusive decays to left-handed etau (mutau) pairs. We set an H+/- +/- lower mass limit of 114(112) GeV/c(2) at the 95% confidence level.

Search for pair production of scalar top quarks decaying to a tau lepton and a b quark in pp over collisions at sqrt s=1.96 TeV

We search for pair production of supersymmetric top quarks (t over1), followed by R-parity violating decay t over1-->taub with a branching ratio beta, using 322 pb(-1) of pp over collisions at sqrt s=1.96 TeV collected by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab. Two candidate events pass our final selection criteria, consistent with the standard model expectation. We set upper limits on the cross section sigma(t over1t over1) x beta2 as a function of the top-squark mass m(t over1). Assuming beta=1, we set a 95% confidence level limit m(t over1)>153 GeV/c2. The limits are also applicable to the case of a third-generation scalar leptoquark (LQ3) decaying LQ3-->taub.

Search for resonant tt[overline] production in pp[overline] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV

We report on a search for narrow-width particles decaying to a top and antitop quark pair. The data set used in the analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 680 pb(-1) collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab in run II. We present 95% confidence level upper limits on the cross section times branching ratio. Assuming a specific top-color-assisted technicolor production model, the leptophobic Z' with width Gamma(Z')=0.012M(Z'), we exclude the mass range M(Z')<725 GeV/c(2) at the 95% confidence level.

Search for the Higgs boson in events with missing transverse energy and b quark jets produced in pp collisions at square root(s)=1.96 TeV

We search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with an electroweak vector boson in events with no identified charged leptons, large imbalance in transverse momentum, and two jets where at least one contains a secondary vertex consistent with the decay of b hadrons. We use approximately 1 fb(-1) integrated luminosity of pp collisions at square root(s)=1.96 TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab II experiment at the Tevatron. We find 268 (16) single (double) b-tagged candidate events, where 248+/-43 (14.4+/-2.7) are expected from standard model background processes. We observe no significant excess over the expected background and thus set 95% confidence level upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section for several Higgs boson masses ranging from 110 to 140 GeV/c(2). For a mass of 115 GeV/c(2), the observed (expected) limit is 20.4 (14.2) times the standard model prediction.

Strong evidence for ZZ production in pp[over] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV

We report the first evidence of Z boson pair production at a hadron collider with a significance exceeding 4 standard deviations. This result is based on a data sample corresponding to 1.9 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity from pp[over] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab II detector. In the lll'l' channel, we observe three ZZ candidates with an expected background of 0.096(-0.063)+0.092 events. In the llnunu channel, we use a leading-order calculation of the relative ZZ and WW event probabilities to discriminate between signal and background. In the combination of lll'l' and llnunu channels, we observe an excess of events with a probability of 5.1 x 10(-6) to be due to the expected background. This corresponds to a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. The measured cross section is sigma(pp[over]-->ZZ)=1.4(-0.6)+0.7(stat+syst) pb, consistent with the standard model expectation.

Observation of the decay Bc+/--->J/psipi+/- and measurement of the Bc+/- mass

The Bc+/- meson is observed through the decay Bc+/--->J/psipi+/-, in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.4 fb(-1) recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. A signal of 108+/-15 candidates is observed, with a significance that exceeds 8sigma. The mass of the Bc+/- meson is measured to be 6275.6+/-2.9(stat)+/-2.5(syst) MeV/c2.

First flavor-tagged determination of bounds on mixing-induced CP violation in Bs0 --> J/psiphi decays

This Letter describes the first determination of bounds on the CP-violation parameter 2beta(s) using B(s)(0) decays in which the flavor of the bottom meson at production is identified. The result is based on approximately 2000 B(s)(0)-->J/psiphi decays reconstructed in a 1.35 fb(-1) data sample collected with the CDF II detector using pp collisions produced at the Fermilab Tevatron. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of 2beta(s) and the decay-width difference DeltaGamma. Assuming the standard model predictions of 2beta(s) and DeltaGamma, the probability of a deviation as large as the level of the observed data is 15%, corresponding to 1.5 Gaussian standard deviations.

Search for heavy toplike quarks using lepton plus jets events in 1.96 TeV pp collisions

We present the results of a search for pair production of a new heavy toplike quark t' decaying to a W boson and another quark using the Collider Detector at Fermilab II detector in run II of the Tevatron pp collider. Using a data sample corresponding to 760 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity, we fit the observed spectrum of total transverse energy and reconstructed t' quark mass to a combination of standard model processes and t' pair production. We see no evidence for t't' production, and we infer a lower limit of 256 GeV/c(2) on the mass of the t' at 95% C.L. assuming standard strong couplings for the t'.

Measurement of Lifetime and Decay-Width Difference in B_{s};{0}-->J/psivarphi Decays

We measure the mean lifetime tau=2/(Gamma_{L}+Gamma_{H}) and the decay-width difference DeltaGamma=Gamma_{L}-Gamma_{H} of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_{s}{0} meson, B_{sL}{0} and B_{sH}{0}, in B_{s}{0}-->J/psivarphi decays using 1.7 fb;{-1} of data collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp[over ] collider. Assuming CP conservation, a good approximation for the B_{s}{0} system in the standard model, we obtain DeltaGamma=0.076_{-0.063}{+0.059}(stat)+/-0.006(syst) ps{-1} and tau=1.52+/-0.04(stat)+/-0.02(syst) ps, the most precise measurements to date. Our constraints on the weak phase and DeltaGamma are consistent with CP conservation.
