Abstract
Objective: To analyze the results of occupational health examinations of radiation workers in Shaanxi Province, and to provide basis and reference for effectively conduct occupational health monitoring. Methods: From April 2016 to January 2022, a questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the basic information on occupational health examinations of qualified radiation workers in Shaanxi Province from 2016 to 2021. Based on the abnormal rate of occupational health among radiation workers, 1018 people were randomly selected using a cluster stratified sampling method to analyze the occupational health examination results of different positions, types of work, gender, length of service, and exposure doses. Results: The chromosomal aberration rates of peripheral blood lymphocytes among radiation workers in Shaanxi Province from 2016 to 2021 were 0.26% (10/3876), 0.77% (27/3512), 0.16% (16/10153), 0.09% (13/14769), 0.10% (13/13399), and 0.12% (20/16671), respectively. The abnormal rates of thyroid ultrasound examination were 32.33% (150/464), 24.46% (649/2653), 55.24% (786/1423), 32.89% (888/2700), 35.69% (1475/4133), and 42.51% (1993/4688), respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the abnormal rates among different years (P<0.05). The abnormal rate of renal function examination in male radiation workers was higher than that in females (P<0.05). Compared with non medical users, the abnormal rates of renal function, thyroid function, and blood routine examination in medical radiation workers were higher (P<0.05), and the abnormal rates of renal function, thyroid function, and blood routine examination in medical applications were higher than those in radiation diagnosis, nuclear medicine, and radiation therapy (P<0.05). The abnormal rates of electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, blood pressure, thyroid function, and blood routine increased with the length of service (P<0.05). The abnormal rates of blood pressure, liver function, kidney function, thyroid function, and blood routine examination increased with the exposure dose (P<0.05) . Conclusion: The occupational health status of radiation workers is not optimistic. Occupational health monitoring should be strengthened, especially interventional radiation diagnosis occupational health examination, as well as changes in the indicators of sensitive organs such as eye lens and thyroid, so as to ensure the health of radiation workers.

Abstract
Dust storms have direct or indirect impacts on climate change and human health. Identifying and quantifying natural/anthropogenic dust sources can facilitate effective prevention and control of dust events. Based on surface real-time PM10 monitoring data, satellite remote sensing and the HYSPLIT model, this study determined the specific timing, coverage and sources of dust events in Shanxi Province, Northern China. Thus, a composite fingerprinting technique was established to quantify potential dust sources and dust contributions of single dust events. The dust oxidation model was validated, indicating that the composite fingerprinting technique was well suited to the study region. The results show that natural dust sources (67%) contributed more to the study region than anthropogenic dust sources. They were mainly from the northwest and north of the study region. Particularly, the contributions of Taiyuan (TY) and Linfen (LF) accounted for the largest (82%) and smallest (55%) proportions, respectively, both exceeding 50%. Anthropogenic dust sources contributed 33%, mainly from the east and south of the study region. The contribution of anthropogenic dust sources increased in the study region from north to south. In terms of potential dust sources, the Tengger Desert and Badain Jaran Desert (TDBD) contributed the most (26%), followed by the Otindag Sandy Land (OL) (22%). The Taklimakan Desert (TD) contributed the least (2%). The Middle Farmland region of the Hexi Corridor (HMF) in the west (15%) had the largest proportion of anthropogenic dust sources. Differences in the regional contribution of potential dust sources mainly resulted from winter winds, surface drought severity and particle size. At an insignificant distance from the study region, the contribution of potential dust sources was larger in the west than in the east and increased from south to north overall. These methods and findings can contribute to improving the ecological environment in Northern China.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) Forpatients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC), the standard treatment is fluoropyrimidine (FU) -based neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT) combined with curative surgery. The CAO/ARO/AIO-04 trial and FORWARC trial reported that the addition of oxaliplatin to FU -based NCRT contributed to improve pathologic complete response (pCR), nevertheless, increased the acute therapeutic toxicity. Some studies showed that vitamin C (VitC) had potential benefits on anti-tumor therapy and anti-inflammatory response. Therefore, we conducted this HCCSC R02 study to explore the efficacy and safety of adding a high-dose intravenous VitC to mFOLFOX6/XELOX -based NCRT in LARC. MATERIALS/METHODS HCCSCR02 study was designed as a prospective, single-center phase II trial, which including pts aged 18-75 years with stage II/III rectal adenocarcinoma, distance from anus ≤12cm. The enrollment criteria included: staged with MRI as cT3/cT4 or cN1/2, or mesorectal fascia involvement (MRF+), or difficult to preserve the anus. Patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme(G6PD) deficiency were excluded. Pelvic intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) was given in 45-50.4Gy/25-28 fractions. Concurrently, two cycles of chemotherapy (mFOLFOX6 or XELOX) were administered during IMRT, as well as intravenous VitC (24g) delivered daily after the end of each radiation therapy. Additional 2-3 cycles of mFOLFOX6 / XELOX were adopted between the completion of radiotherapy and surgery. The primary endpoint was pCR rate. The secondary endpoints included radiation-related toxicities, overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). This study is still recruiting. RESULTS From May 15, 2021 to Feb 8, 2023, 19 pts were recruited and finished all the scheduled NCRT, of which the proportion of cT4, cT3, cN2, cN1 were 31.6%, 63.2%, 52.6%, 36.8%, respectively. In addition, 10 pts (52.6%) were diagnosed as MRF+ initially, and 8 pts (42.1%) had a lower primary tumor(≤5cm) who were considered difficult for anal preservation before NCRT. All subjects enrolled were confirmed to be proficient mismatch repair (pMMR). As a result, 18 pts underwent a total mesorectal excision (TME) all with R0-resection, and 8 pts were evaluated as pCR (44.4%, 8/18, confidence interval: 0.246-0.663), 11 as major pathological response rate (MPR) (61.6%, 11/18), respectively. The anus preservation rate in patients with lower diseases was 87.5% (7/8). One case accepted a watch-and-wait strategy because of clinical complete response (cCR). Overall, grade 3 toxicities were observed in 4 pts, including 3 leucopenia (15.8%, 3/19), 2 neutropenia (10.5%, 2/19) and 1 diarrhea (5.3%, 1/19). No grade 4 adverse event was observed. CONCLUSION The addition of high-dose VitC to the mFOLFOX6/XELOX-based NCRT in LARC showed a promising pCR, well tolerance, particularly low rate of diarrhea, thus warrants further investigation. Abstract
Objective: To use the spatiotemporal distribution model and INLA algorithm to study the spatiotemporal characteristics and influencing factors of tuberculosis in Shanghai and to provide a theoretical basis for formulating regional tuberculosis epidemic prevention and control measures. Methods: Based on the data of registered pulmonary tuberculosis cases in Shanghai during 2013-2020 derived from the tuberculosis management information system of China Disease Control and Prevention Information System, the hierarchical Bayesian model was adopted to fit the tuberculosis case data, identify the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of tuberculosis, and explore the potential socioeconomic characteristics and other factors related to health services and spatiotemporal characteristics. Results: From 2013 to 2020, 29 281 registered tuberculosis cases were reported in Shanghai, with an average annual incidence of 25.224/100 000. From 2013 to 2020, the incidence trend increased first and then decreased, the highest incidence was reported in 2014 (27.991/100 000). The incidence of tuberculosis in Shanghai is characterized by spatial clustering. Through the spatial characteristics and risk analysis of the reported incidence of tuberculosis, it is found that the high-risk area of tuberculosis in Shanghai is the suburban communities, whereas downtown communities are the low-risk areas. The incidence risk of pulmonary tuberculosis is associated with the gross domestic product per capita (RR=0.48), the number of beds per 10 000 persons (RR=0.56), the normalized vegetation index (RR=0.50), and the night light index (RR=0.80). Conclusions: With the steady progress of tuberculosis prevention and control in the central urban area of Shanghai, special attention should be paid to the prevention and control in the suburbs further to improve the social and economic level in the suburbs and increase the coverage rate of urban green space, to reduce the incidence of tuberculosis and reduce the disease burden of tuberculosis in Shanghai.

Abstract
Objective: To quantitatively estimate the incidence of COVID-19 in different backgrounds, including vaccination coverage, non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) measures, home quarantine willingness and international arrivals, and the demands of healthcare resource in Shanghai in the context of optimized epidemic prevention and control strategies. Methods: Based on the natural history of 2019-nCoV, local vaccination coverage and NPI performance, an age-structured Susceptible-Exposed-Infections-Removed (SEIR) epidemic dynamic model was established for the estimation of the incidence of COVID-19 and demand of hospital beds in Shanghai by using the data on December 1, 2022 as the basis. Results: Based on current vaccination coverage, it is estimated that 180 184 COVID-19 cases would need treatment in hospitals in Shanghai within 100 days. When the booster vaccination coverage reaches an ideal level, the number of the cases needing hospitalization would decrease by 73.20%. School closure or school closure plus workplace closure could reduce the peak demand of regular beds by 24.04% or 37.73%, respectively, compared with the situation without NPI. Increased willingness of home quarantine could reduce the number of daily new cases and delay incidence peak of COVID-19. The number of international arrivals has little impact on the development of the epidemic. Conclusions: According to the epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 and the actual situation of vaccination in Shanghai, the incidence of COVID-19 and health resource demand might be reduced by increasing vaccination coverage and early implementation of NPI.

Abstract
The rapid development of sequencing technology brings the explosive growth of pathogen genetic data. The combination of genomic data and phylogenetic method is being used to elaborate the origin and evolution of pathogens, the time and space distribution and parameter changes in the prevalence process, and how phenotypes like antigen, virulence, and resistance change over time. This method is also being used to predict pathogen transmission trends. In this study, we described the aim of phylogeny and the process of the phylogenetic construction method. We elaborated the advantages and disadvantages and scope of application of tree-building methods including distance-based, maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and bayesian methods. We have reviewed the application and the estimation methods of major epidemiological parameters of phylodynamics and phylogeography in domestic and foreign studies. We concluded that the time- and location-scaled phylogenetic trees are increasingly used for outbreak investigation and routine surveillance of infectious diseases.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of Tonghua Dongbao's insulin aspart injection (Rishulin) and NovoRapid (Novo Nordisk) in the treatment of diabetes. Methods: A 26-week, randomized, open-label, parallel-group, positive control drug and non-inferiority trial was conducted in 23 centers in China. A total of 563 diabetes with poor blood glucose control treated with insulin for at least 3 months before were included. The subjects were randomized(stratified block random method) into those receiving Rishulin or NovoRapid at a ratio of 3∶1. Both groups were combined with basal insulin (Lantus). The primary endpoint was the change in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) from baseline to the end of 24 weeks of treatment. Results: For full analysis set, after 24 weeks of treatment, HbA1c level of Ruishulin group decreased from (8.66±1.28)% to (7.77±1.09)% (P<0.001), and that of NovoRapid group decreased from (8.47±1.28) % to (7.65±0.97) % (P<0.001). Treatment difference in HbA1c (NovoRapid group-Ruishulin group) was -0.061% (95%CI -0.320-0.199). HbA1c<7.0% target reacing rates were 24.26% and 21.21% (P=0.456), and HbA1c<6.5% target reacing rates were 9.65% and 6.82% (P=0.310) in Ruishulin group and NovoRapid group, repectively. The standard 2 hours postprandial blood glucose (2hPG) in Ruishulin group decreased from (16.23±5.22) mmol/L to (12.65±4.57) mmol/L (P<0.001), and 2hPG in NovoRapid group decreased from (16.13±5.37) mmol/L to (11.91)±4.21) mmol/L (P<0.001). The fingertips blood glucose at 7-point of both groups exhibited varying degrees of reduction compared with those at baseline, repectively. Positive ratios of specific antibodies were 31.68% in Ruishulin group and 36.36% in NovoRapid group (P=0.320). Ratios of negative to positive were 7.43% and 10.61% (P=0.360), and ratios of positive to negative were 10.40% and 7.58% (P=0.360) in Ruishulin group and NovoRapid group, respectively. The incidence of hypoglycemia was 60.05% and 55.40% (P=0.371), and the incidence of adverse events was 76.60% and 77.70% (P=0.818) in Ruishulin group and NovoRapid group, respectively. Conclusions: Rishulin is not inferior to NovoRapid, and has shown good efficacy and safety. It can be an ideal choice for clinicians in patients with poor blood glucose control with insulin.

Abstract
Objective: To establish an Epstein-Barr virus-transformed peripheral blood B cell line (BCL), and explore its phenotypic characteristics, the ability to secrete antibodies and cytokines, and the ability to present hepatitis B virus (HBV) antigen peptide. Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from patients with HBV infection. Epstein-Barr virus supernatant was incubated to construct BCL. The expression of CD19, CD138, CD38, CD27 and the production levels of IFN - γ, IL-10, IL-6 were detected by flow cytometry. BCL loaded with HBV antigen peptide was incubated with in vitro-expanded autologous T cells. Intracellular staining was used to detect the level of interferon-gamma produced by T cells. Results: Compared with untransformed peripheral blood B cells, BCL had high expression levels of CD138, CD38 and CD27, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05), while the level of IL-6 production was decreased, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). BCL loaded with HBV antigen peptide had significantly enhanced the production of interferon-gamma by in vitro-expanded autologous T cells, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). Conclusion: BCL highly expresses CD138, CD38 and CD27, but its ability to produce IL-6 decreases. BCL can improve the immune response efficiency of HBV-specific T cells to HBV antigen peptide, and serve as a new tool for hepatitis B immune research.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the changes in the morbidity and mortality of hepatitis B in China from 1990 to 2017, and provide evidence for prevention and control of hepatitis B. Methods: The reported incidence and death data of hepatitis B from the Data-Center of China Public Health Science and demographic data from the National Bureau of Statistics were used, Excel 2016 was used to establish the databases of reported hepatitis B cases and deaths, respectively. The Joinpoint regression model was used through Joinpoint software 4.8.0.1 to estimate the average annual percent change of annual reported incidence and mortality of hepatitis B in different age groups and provinces in China from 1990 to 2017 in order to further explore the trend of hepatitis B incidence. Software R 3.6.2 was used for statistical analysis and data visualization. Results: A total of 20 793 233 hepatitis B cases were reported from January 1990 to December 2017 in China with average annual reported incidence of 58.19/100 000. The average annual reported incidence appeared highest in age group 25-29 years (119.67/100 000) and the annual reported incidence increased in group aged 45 years and above. Besides, the reported case fatality rate reached the highest in group aged 85 years and above (2.26/1 000). The reported incidence showed increasing trends in 23 provinces (P<0.05), stable in 7 provinces (P>0.05), and decreasing in 2 provinces (P<0.05). Conclusions: The report of hepatitis B was mainly from adult population in China, and the reported incidence of hepatitis B in this population was in increase. In some provinces of the eastern China where immunization measures have been in place and the treatment level is relatively high, the incidence of hepatitis B has been leveled off; the incidences in most provinces in western China are still in increase. Therefore, more targeted prevention and control strategies should be taken in different provinces.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the spatial-temporal distribution and spatial clusters of measles cases in China. Methods: Measles incidence data was collected from the National Notifiable Disease Reporting System of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The global and local spatial autocorrelation analyses were conducted by using software ArcGIS 10.2 and spatial-temporal scan was conducted by using software SaTScan 9.6. Results: A total of 1 012 537 cases of measles were reported in China from 2001 to 2016 and the annual incidence showed a sharp downward trend. There was global spatial clustering of measles cases during 2001-2004, 2005-2008, and 2009-2012, and their Moran's I coefficients were 0.29, 0.26, and 0.31, respectively. The results of local spatial autocorrelation analysis showed that there were high- high clustering areas of measles at all time periods, especially in western China. Guangdong province was detected as a separate high-low scattered area from 2005 to 2008 and no low-low clustering area was detected. The spatial-temporal scan statistics showed that there was a wide clustering area covering western, central and northern China, and Shanxi province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from 2001-2008. Conclusion: The incidence of measles in China has a certain clustering in both space and time during 2001-2016, the results provide evidence for the development of future strategy of measles prevention and control in China.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the knowledge attitude and practice (KAP) on vaccination among children's parents in Jiangxi, Shanghai, and Qinghai and explore the factors influencing KAP. Methods: The study selected two counties/districts in Jiangxi, Shanghai, and Qinghai, respectively, by stratified sampling and used a unified questionnaire to investigate the parental KAP of vaccination. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to explore factors influencing parental KAP, as well as the relationship between knowledge and behavior. Results: Of the 760 valid questionnaires, the knowledge of vaccination among children's parents was better, and the vaccination knowledge of parents in Qinghai and Shanghai were slightly better than those in Jiangxi. Parents mainly obtained vaccination knowledge through medical staff and vaccination manuals. The fitting degree of SEM was relatively good; the root mean square error of approximation of the model is 0.033. The higher the parents' education level, the better their knowledge of vaccination (β̂=0.082). Parental vaccination knowledge could influence whether the vaccinated children stay for half an hour in the clinics (β̂=0.541). It could also impact whether parents giving up vaccinating their children in the face of media reports about the adverse effects of vaccinations (β̂=0.515). Conclusions: The knowledge of vaccination among the parents in Jiangxi, Shanghai, and Qinghai was quite good. Moreover, we should pay more attention to the mass media programs and vaccination knowledge among parents with low or middle education backgrounds. Vaccination knowledge can be disseminated through medical staff, vaccination manuals, or mobile applications.

Abstract
Objective: Under different diagnostic scenarios, we tried to establish a tuberculosis dynamic model, to predict the incidence burden and to provide evidence for developing the prevention and control programs of tuberculosis. Methods: A systematic dynamic model was established to fit the annual incidence rates of tuberculosis data from the China CDC, between 2005 and 2018. Basic reproductive number (R(0)) was calculated. Impact of different diagnostic scenarios on tuberculosis burden was explored by numerical changes in diagnosis-related parameters. Results: Results from the Chi-square test indicated that the model accuracy appeared as: χ(2)=1.102 (P=1.000). Also, the computed result showed that R(0)=0.063<1, indicating that tuberculosis would gradually be disappearing in China. Approaches that including 'reducing the delayed diagnosis time'or 'improving the timely medical treatment'would end the fluctuations of the number of infectious and hospitalized patients and thus leading to continuous reduction in the number of these patients, in a long run. Conclusions: This model fitted well for the trend of tuberculosis incidence rates between 2005 and 2018. Reducing the delay time in diagnosis and improving the rate of timely medical treatment could effectively reduce the long-term burden of tuberculosis. Improvement of this model would be further explored.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the association between dietary pattern and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in local residents aged 40 years and above in Songjiang district of Shanghai. Methods: Data was obtained from the baseline investigation of Shanghai Peak-Plan cohort. According to inclusion and exclusion criteria, we selected people with T2DM as the case group, and people without T2DM as controls, matched with gender, age and alcohol intake status. Dietary patterns were established by factor analysis. Conditional logistic regression model (CLRM) was used to explore the relationship between different dietary patterns and T2DM, as well as the association between multiplicative interactions of dietary patterns and T2DM. Results: We used factor analysis to obtain six dietary patterns: including meat, desserts-coarse cereals, condiment-egg, beverage, cereals-tubers and fruit-vegetable. Data from multivariate condition logistic regression suggested that condiment-egg patterns as (OR=0.543, 95%CI: 0.377-0.781), beverage (OR=0.590, 95%CI: 0.409-0.852), cereals-tubers (OR=0.592, 95%CI: 0.414-0.848), fruit-vegetable (OR=0.604, 95%CI: 0.417-0.876) were associated with the reduced risks for T2DM. After analyzing the multiplicative interactions between dietary patterns, there were three interaction items associated with T2DM with statistical significances: the multiplicative interaction between meat pattern and condiments-egg pattern was related with the increased risk for T2MD, and the multiplicative interactions between cereal-tubers pattern, meat pattern between cereal-tubers pattern and fruit-vegetable pattern were related with the reduced risks for T2MD. Conclusions: In the six dietary pattern under study, cereals-tubers pattern undwr studly, fruit-vegetable pattern might be more practical in preventing T2DM. In addition, the dietary pattern with cereals and potatos as the main ingredients, appropriate meat and reduced condiment intake might also play positive roles in reducing the risk for T2DM.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the characteristics of humor in young adult epileptic patients and examine the relationship between humor and depression. Methods: We recruited 55 young adult epileptic patients who visited outpatient clinic of the Department of Neurology of Yijishan Hospital of Wannan Medical College between October 2018 and March 2019 and 44 healthy controls to complete the multidimensional humor scale (MSHS), humor style questionnaire (HSQ) and Beck depression scale-Ⅱ (BDI-Ⅱ), and compared their differences between the two groups. Results: The results showed that the young adult patients with epilepsy (PWEs) were affected in humor creation, coping with humor and the totally scores of MSHS. The scores of humor creation, coping with humor and the totally scores of MSHS in the young epilepsy patients were 25.3±5.9, 16.7±5.0 and 61±10, which were significantly lower than those in the control group 29.8±6.1, 21.1±2.6 and 71±8. As for the humor style, self-defeating humor scores in PWEs were higher than controls 14±5 vs 9±3, and the self-enhancing humor scores were lower than controls 18±7 vs 23±6. The scores of BDI-Ⅱ in PWEs were significantly higher than those of normal controls 13±7 vs 6±4. Pearson's correlation test showed that the scores of BDI-Ⅱ were negatively correlated with humor creation, coping with humor, the totally scores of MSHS and self-enhancing humor scores (r=-0.566--0.721, P<0.05), while it was positively correlated with self-defeating humor scores (r=0.818, P<0.05). Among the clinically relevant factors, the scores of BDI-Ⅱ were correlated with seizure control and gender. Multiple stepwise linear regression showed that coping with humor, self-defeating and self-enhancing humor scores were closely related with depression in young epileptic adults. Conclusion: The young adults with epilepsy are affected in sense of humor and humor style, which are closely related with depression.

Abstract
A 2-factor test design was used to investigate the effect of an emulsifier (Aldo®, Lonza, America) (200 g/t) in the diet of Cherry Valley meat ducks to replace some of 2 different oils (animal fat and vegetable oil) on meat production performance, slaughter traits, and fat metabolism. The 900 healthy 18-day-old ducks were grouped into 6 treatments, each with 5 replicates and 30 meat ducks per replicate. The 2 fat sources were established as a positive control group, a negative control group (positive control group-some oil (equivalent to metabolic energy of 50 kcal/ton)), and an emulsifier group (negative control group + 200 g/ton Aldo). The results showed that addition of different fat sources in feed had no significant effect on growth performance, carcass properties, and fat metabolism of 18- to 42-day-old meat ducks (P > 0.05). Reducing the amount of oil used in the feed lowered the growth performance, carcass properties, and affected fat metabolism of meat ducks. However, in feeds with 2 fat sources, some oils were replaced by adding Aldo without affecting growth performance and carcass properties of meat ducks, and improved their fat metabolism, reduced triglycerides (TG) in serum, and increased activity of lipoprotein and hepatic lipases in liver and of pancreatic lipase. Thus, addition of Aldo to a low fat diet could improve growth performance, carcass quality, and lipid metabolism, and promote digestion and absorption of fat for meat ducks.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the relationship between systemic inflammatory markers such as neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR), and lymph node metastasis in patients with cN0 gastric cancer. To establish a nomogram model to predict the risk of lymph node metastasis in patients with cN0 gastric cancer. Methods: The preoperative systemic inflammatory markers and clinical data of 134 patients with cN0 gastric cancer were retrospectively analyzed, and these markers of patients with negative (pN0) or positive (pN+ ) lymph node metastasis in postoperative pathological diagnosis were compared. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the predictive effect of preoperative systemic inflammatory markers on lymph node metastasis. The influencing factors for lymph node metastasis were assessed by univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis. A nomogram subsequently established by R software was validated by Bootstrap resampling as internal validation. Results: Compared with pN0 group, NE (P=0.022), CRP (P<0.001), NLR (P<0.001), PLR (P=0.003) and CAR (P<0.001) were higher, LY (P=0.003) and Alb (P=0.042) were lower in pN+ group. ROC curve analysis showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of postoperative pathological lymph node metastasis in patients with cN0 gastric cancer diagnosed by NLR, PLR and CAR were 0.687, 0.651 and 0.694, respectively, and the best cutoff values were 2.12, 113.59 and 0.02, respectively. The corresponding sensitivity and specificity were 62.9% and 72.2%, 77.4% and 48.6%, 74.2% and 58.3%, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that tumor size, depth of invasion, NLR, PLR and CAR were associated with lymph node metastasis in cN0 gastric cancer patients (all P<0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that depth of invasion, NLR and CAR were independent influencing factors of lymph node metastasis in patients with cN0 gastric cancer. OR were 8.084, 3.540 and 3.092, respectively (all P<0.05). The C-index of the nomogram model was 0.847 (95% CI: 0.782-0.915). The predicting calibration curve was properly fit with the ideal curve in calibration chart. Conclusion: Combination of NLR and CAR to establish a nomogram model has a good consistency and can accurately predict the risk of lymph node metastasis in patients with cN0 gastric cancer.

Abstract
The prevalence of pathogen inhibitors bacteria has motivate the study for antimicrobial compounds. Bioactive fungicide have always received considerable attention. A bacterial isolated strain HAB-5 showed antifungal activity against plant fungi. Based on morphological, physiological, biochemical and 16SrDNA sequence analysis, the strain was identified to be a Bacillus atrophaeus. This strain possessed a broad spectrum antifungal activity against various plant pathogenic fungi. Extraction of antifungal substance was performed and the crude extract had potent antifungal ability and showed great potential for swelling and inhibiting spore germination. This antifungal displayed heat stability and active in a wide pH range 5.0-10.0. Moreover no reduction was found in its activity after enzyme treatment. The toxicity test was evaluated in Danio rerio. The acute toxicity test indicated that the 24, 48, 72, 96h LC50 values of UMTLS to the zebrafish were 14.4, 13.8, 13.4, and 12.9%, respectively. Based on the results obtained in this study, antifungal substance was not toxic to zebra. Analyses of disease suppression showed that HAB-5 was effective to reduce the incidence of anthracnose symptoms on mango fruits, also prevent disease infection and protect tobacco seedling from Phytophtora nicotianae. The bioactive substance from Bacillus atrophaeus HAB-5 could be a candidate in the generation of new antifungal agents in crop.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate influence of dietary palygorskite (Pal) supplementation on growth performance, mineral accumulations in the tissues (livers, kidneys, and muscles), antioxidant capacities, and meat quality of broilers fed lead (Pb)-contaminated diet. One-hundred forty-four male broiler chicks were randomly divided into three treatment groups, receiving a corn-soybean meal basal diet (the control group), the basal diet contaminated with 10 mg/kg Pb (the Pb group), and the basal diet with 10-g/kg Pal supplementation and 10-mg/kg Pb contamination (the Pal/Pb group) from 1 to 42 days of age, respectively. Treatments did not affect growth performance of broilers in the 42-day study (P > 0.05). Compared with the control group, Pb contamination increased Pb accumulation in the livers, kidneys, and muscles (P < 0.05); elevated malondialdehyde accumulation in the livers, kidneys, and breast muscles; glutathione peroxidase activity in the livers and superoxide dismutase activity in the kidneys (P < 0.05); exacerbated drip loss in the pectoralis muscles (P < 0.05); and reduced glutathione peroxidase activity in the pectoralis muscles (P < 0.05) of broilers at 42 days of age. The values of these parameters were reversed in the Pal/Pb group to levels comparable with those in the control group (P < 0.05). Additionally, Pal supplementation reduced redness value in the pectoralis muscles (P < 0.05), and decreased Cu concentration in the pectoralis muscles and livers at 42 days of age as well as its accumulation in the kidneys at both 21 and 42 days of age compared with the other two groups (P < 0.05). The results suggested that dietary Pal supplementation would decrease Pb residue in the tissues, alleviate oxidative stress, and affect meat quality of broilers exposed to Pb.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Chinese herbal mixture, Tien-Hsien liquid (THL), has been used as an anticancer dietary supplement for more than 20 years. Our previous studies have shown that THL can modulate immune responseand inhibit tumor growth. In this study, we further evaluated the effect of THL on anticancer immune response in mice vaccinated with γ-ray-irradiated tumor cells. METHODS The antitumor effect of THL was determined in mice vaccinated with low-tumorigenic CT-26-low colon cancer cells or γ-ray-irradiated high-tumorigenic CT-26-high colon cancer cells. The number of natural killer (NK) cells and T lymphocytes in the spleen was analyzed by flow cytometry. The tumor-killing activities of NK cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) were analyzed by flow cytometry using YAC-1 and CT-26-high cells, respectively, as target cells. The levels of IFN-γ, IL-2, and TNF-α were determined by ELISA. RESULTS THL suppressed the growth of CT-26-high tumor in mice previously vaccinated with low-tumorigenic CT-26-low cells or γ-irradiated CT-26-high cells. THL increased the populations of NK cells and CD4+ T lymphocytes in the spleen and enhanced the tumor-killing activities of NK cells and CTL in mice vaccinated with γ-irradiated CT-26-high cells. THL increased the production of IFN-γ, IL-2, and TNF-α in mice vaccinated with γ-irradiated CT-26-high cells. CONCLUSION THL can enhance the antitumor immune responses in mice vaccinated with killed tumor cells. These results suggest that THL may be used as a complementary medicine for cancer patients previously treated with killed tumor cell vaccines, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy.

Abstract
Spatial epidemiology and molecular epidemiology have been widely used in the studies of tuberculosis (TB), but each with limitations. Integration of the two methods provides new ideas and methods in TB research. All referenced articles are from CNKI, Wan Fang database, PubMed database and Web of Science database. Method of combining spatial epidemiology and molecular epidemiology has been widely used in determining the local epidemic strains of TB genotype, the transmission mechanism, risk factors of TB, drug-resistant TB, as well as evaluating the effectiveness of TB prevention and control measures. Application of the combined methods is of important significance in the studies of TB, thus worthy to be further introduced to researchers and disease prevention and control workers in this country.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the spatial distribution characteristics of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) cases in Zhejiang province in 2010-2012. METHODS Data on MDR-TB cases in Zhejiang province were collected and linked to the digital map at the county and district levels. ArcGIS 10.0 software was used for spatial analysis. RESULTS RESULTS from the spatial autocorrelation analysis showed that spatial aggregation appeared in MDR-TB distribution during 2010-2012 while local Moran's I spatial autocorrelation analysis identified several "high incidence regions" (Wuxing, Deqing, Yuhang, Gongshu, Jianggan, Xiaoshan, Yuecheng, Shaoxing Shengzhou, Changshan, Kecheng), and "low incidence region" (Haishu). Through Getis-Ord General G spatial autocorrelation analysis, 18 "positive hotspots" (Wuxing, Nanxun, Deqing, Yuhang, Shangcheng, Xiacheng, Gongshu, Jianggan, Binjiang Xiaoshan Xihu, Haining, Yuecheng, Shaoxing, Zhuji, Shengzhou, Kecheng and Suichang) and 11 "negative hotspots" (Nanhu, Haiyan, Cixi, Dinghai, Zhenhai, Jiangbei, Jiangdong, Beilun, Yinzhou, Fenghua, and Yueqing) were identified. CONCLUSIONS Spatial analysis on MDR-TB incidence implied the spatial aggregation in Zhejiang province. Data showed that the hotspots with high population density and human movement were under progressive expansion.

Abstract
Light scattering and transmission of Gaussian (G) and Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) vortex beams with different orbital angular momentum (L) in various turbid media were investigated. Transmittance was measured with varied ratios of sample thickness (z) to scattering mean free path (ls) of turbid media, z/ls. In the ballistic region, the LG and G beams were found to have no significant difference on transmittance, while in the diffusive region, the LG beams showed a higher received signal than the G beams, and the LG beams with higher L values showed a higher received signal than those with lower L values. The transition points from ballistic to diffusive regions for different scattering media were determined. This newly observed transmittance difference of LG and G beams may be used for deep target detection in turbid media through LG beam imaging.

Abstract
Early rehabilitative therapy is important for patients with hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage to improve long-term function of the extremities. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is closely associated with the pathogenesis of hypertension. To identify the markers contributing to the genetic susceptibility to hypertensive cerebellar hemorrhage (HCH) and rehabilitative treatment, we examined the potential association between HCH and 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms of the VEGF gene. Participants included 244 patients with HCH and 251 healthy controls from our rehabilitation department. The T allelic frequencies of the rs3025020 (intron 6) and rs3025039 (3'-UTR) polymorphisms were significantly higher in the patients with HCH than in the healthy controls (rs3025020 T allele: P = 0.0002, OR = 1.619, 95%CI = 1.256-2.088; rs3025039 T allele: P = 0.001, OR = 1.682, 95%CI = 1.246-2.270). Strong linkage disequilibrium was observed in three blocks (D' > 0.9), and significantly more C-G-C (rs3025020, rs3025030, and rs3025039) haplotypes (P = 0.001) were found in the controls in block 3. Significantly more T-G-C haplotypes were found in the patients with HCH (P = 0.046). Further genotype and clinical phenotype correlation study of the rs3025039 carriers showed that Fugl-Meyer and Barthel index scores were lower in the patients with the TT genotype relative to CT + CC genotypes (P < 0.01). These findings point to a role for VEGF polymorphism in HCH, and may be informative for future investigations on the pathogenesis of rehabilitative treatment.

Abstract
Background Human infections with avian influenza viruses (AIVs) have frequently raised global concerns of emerging, interspecies-transmissible viruses with pandemic potential. Waterfowl, the predominant reservoir of influenza viruses in nature, harbor precursors of different genetic lineages that have contributed to novel pandemic influenza viruses in the past. Methods Two duck influenza H5N2 viruses, DV518 and DV413, isolated through virological surveillance at a live-poultry market in Taiwan, showed phylogenetic relatedness but exhibited different replication capabilities in mammalian Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells. This study characterizes the replication properties of the two duck H5N2 viruses and the determinants involved. Results The DV518 virus replicated more efficiently than DV413 in both MDCK and chicken DF1 cells. Interestingly, the infection of MDCK cells by DV518 formed heterogeneous plaques with great differences in size [large (L) and small (S)], and the two viral strains (p518-L and p518-S) obtained from plaque purification exhibited distinguishable replication kinetics in MDCK cells. Nonetheless, both plaque-purified DV518 strains still maintained their growth advantages over the plaque-purified p413 strain. Moreover, three amino acid substitutions in PA (P224S), PB2 (E72D), and M1 (A128T) were identified in intra-duck variations (p518-L vs p518-S), whereas other changes in HA (N170D), NA (I56T), and NP (Y289H) were present in inter-duck variations (DV518 vs DV413). Both p518-L and p518-S strains had the N170D substitution in HA, which might be related to their greater binding to MDCK cells. Additionally, polymerase activity assays on 293T cells demonstrated the role of vRNP in modulating the replication capability of the duck p518-L viruses in mammalian cells. Conclusion These results demonstrate that intra-host phenotypic variation occurs even within an individual duck. In view of recent human infections by low pathogenic AIVs, this study suggests possible determinants involved in the stepwise selection of virus variants from the duck influenza virus population which may facilitate inter-species transmission.

Abstract
Background Isoflavone-containing soy products modulate allergic inflammation in mice. In our previously study, IFN-γ and IL-10 production increased in mice fed with Saccharomyces cerevisiae legume fermented product (SCLFP), demonstrating that SCLFP had immunomodulatory activity. In this study, we tested the anti-inflammatory effects of SCLFP in a mouse model of cutaneous atopic dermatitis inflammation induced by epicutaneous sensitization. Methods Epicutaneous exposure to protein allergens plus Staphylococcal enterotoxin B induced a T helper (Th)-2–dominant immune response as well as cutaneous atopic dermatitis-like inflammation in BALB/c mice. The thickness of the skin epithelium, eosinophil migration, and T helper responses were determined in patched skin and draining lymph nodes of mice fed with and without SCLFP. Results Epicutaneous exposure to protein allergens plus Staphylococcal enterotoxin B induced a T helper (Th)-2–dominant immune response as well as cutaneous atopic dermatitis-like inflammation in BALB/c mice. SCLFP feeding attenuated this cutaneous Th2 response, as evidenced by decreased thickening of the epidermis, less eosinophil infiltration, and lower levels of IL-5, IL-13, and CXCL11 expression compared to controls. Oral administration of SCLFP also modulated Th1 responses in draining lymph nodes, with lower levels of IFN-γ, IL-4, and IL-17 expression. Conclusion Oral intake of SCLFP modulated the induced Th2 inflammatory responses in skin and might have potential applications for the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was to evaluate the clinicopathological and prognostic features of follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) in our institute over a 15-year period. METHODS The clinical features, management and outcome of 134 consecutive patients were analyzed according to the time of diagnosis: Group I (1997-2001), Group II (2002-2006), and Group III (2007-2011). RESULTS As time advanced, the ratio of FTC to papillary thyroid carcinoma decreased from 8.7% in group I to 4.3% in group III (p = 0.000). The percentage of patients undergoing total thyroidectomy seemed to be more commonly used in the later periods - from 10.5% in group I to 21.8% in group II and 18.9% in group III. The median diameter of tumors in group I was 4.2 cm and it showed a sharp decrease to 2.8 cm in group II and 2.9 cm in group III respectively. There was a trend towards a higher stage in patients from Group I vs. patients from Groups II and III (stage IV, 15.8% vs. 2.2% and 4.3%, p = 0.072). The outcome was improved in terms of disease-free survival (DFS). The 3-year DFS rate improved from 77.8% in group I to 93.7% in group II and 100% in group III (p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS The clinical features, management and outcome of FTC patients changed over 15-year period. Patients diagnosed after 2001 had a better prognosis. This improvement was probably related to earlier diagnosis with smaller tumor size and presentation at earlier tumor stage.

Abstract
Endocan (or called Esm-1) has been shown to have tumorigenic activities and its expression is associated with poor prognosis in various cancers. Latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) is an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-encoded oncoprotein and has been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of EBV-associated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). To further understand the role of LMP1 in the pathogenesis of NPC, microarray analysis of LMP1-regulated genes in epithelial cells was performed. We found that endocan was one of the major cellular genes upregulated by LMP1. This induction of endocan by LMP1 was confirmed in several epithelial cell lines including an NPC cell line. Upregulation of endocan by LMP1 was found to be mediated through the CTAR1 and CTAR2 domains of LMP1 and through the LMP1-activated NF-κB, MEK-ERK and JNK signaling pathways. To study whether endocan was expressed in NPC and whether endocan expression was associated with LMP1 expression in NPC, the expression of endocan and LMP1 in tumor tissues from 42 NPC patients was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Expression of endocan was found in 52% of NPC specimens. Significant correlation between LMP1 and endocan expression was observed (p<0.0001). Moreover, NPC patients with endocan expression were found to have a shorter survival than NPC patients without endocan expression (p=0.0104, log-rank test). Univariate and Multivariate analyses revealed that endocan was a potential prognostic factor for NPC. Finally, we demonstrated that endocan could stimulate the migration and invasion ability of endothelial cells and this activity of endocan was dependent on the glycan moiety and the phenylalanine-rich region of endocan. Together, these studies not only identify a new molecular marker that may predict the survival of NPC patients but also provide a new insight to the pathogenesis of NPC.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that soybean fermentation products can act as cancer chemoprevention or therapeutic agents. In this study, the anticancer activities of a fermentation product of soybean, black bean, and green bean mixture (BN999) were investigated. We found that BN999 inhibited the growth of human breast cancer AU565 cells and prostate adenocarcinoma PC-3 cells but not that of normal human cells. BN999 induced apoptosis in various human cancer cells but not in normal human cells. BN999 treatment of AU565 cancer cells resulted in activation of calpain and caspase-8, -9, and -3, suggesting that BN999 induces apoptosis via receptor-, mitochondria-, and endoplasmic reticulum-mediated pathways. Finally, we showed that BN999 inhibited the growth of mouse CT-26 colon cancer xenografts in syngenic BALB/c mice without causing obvious side effects. Together, these data suggest that BN999 has potential to be used as a cancer chemoprevention or therapeutic agent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The case-fatality rate for tuberculosis (TB) remains high in China, whereas risk factors for deaths among TB cases are still unclear. DESIGN This was a retrospective cohort study of all pulmonary TB patients registered in four districts of Shanghai from 2004 to 2008. Data were derived from the China National TB Surveillance System. A total of 4271 patients were followed up in communities. Data were analysed using Cox regression. RESULTS The percentage of all-cause deaths in the study population was 15% 2-6 years after the most recent TB diagnosis. TB was responsible for only 17% of all deaths; male sex was significantly associated with all-cause deaths. After adjustment for sex, age and treatment history, four factors were significantly and independently associated with increased risk of death: psychopathy, chronic bronchitis, cancer and the presence of multiple diseases. TB was responsible for 7.2 potential years of life lost (PYLL); PYLL was higher in females (8.2) than males (5.3). CONCLUSIONS TB remains a significant problem in urban China. Implementation of improved clinical management, prevention strategies and other public health programmes should target TB patients with chronic conditions, particularly those with multiple diseases.

Abstract
Disposal of sputum from patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) who are treated at home is an important aspect of preventing the spread of TB. However, few studies have examined disposal of sputum by patients with TB who are treated at home. Patients with pulmonary TB who are treated at home were surveyed regarding sputum handling and supervision. A cross-sectional survey of a representative sample of patients with pulmonary TB who are treated at home was conducted in Shandong Province. Participants were individuals with TB who had been registered with a local agency responsible for TB control. Participants completed a questionnaire with both qualitative and quantitative questions. How sputum was handled was determined and factors associated with sputum disposal were analyzed using a non-parametric test, logistic regression, and content analysis. Responses were received from 720 participants. Patients expectorated sputum 4.56 ± 10.367 times a day, and 68.6% of patients responded that they correctly disposed of their sputum. Supervision as part of TB control focused on the efforts of health agencies and paid little attention to waste management by patients. A non-parametric test showed that sputum disposal was significantly associated with gender, age, education, sputum smear results, attitudes toward waste management, and attitudes toward supervision (all p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that gender (OR = 0.482, 95% CI: 0.329-0.704), sputum smear results (OR = 1.300, 95% CI: 1.037-1.629), and level of education (OR = 0.685, 95% CI: 0.528-0.889) were associated with receipt of TB health education (all p < 0.05). Sputum handling by and supervision of patients with pulmonary TB who are treated at home is severely wanting. From a policy perspective, special attention should be given to the definition, details, and methods of supervision of waste management by patients with TB to give them relevant health education and enhance their willingness to be supervised. A financial incentive should be provided to health workers supervising management of TB-related waste.

Abstract
In this study, we demonstrated that 10′(Z), 13′(E)-heptadecadienylhydroquinone (HQ17-2), isolated from the lacquer tree, could decrease swarming motility and hemolysin activity but increase polymyxin B (PB) susceptibilityof Proteus mirabilis which is intrinsically highly-resistant to PB. The increased PB susceptibility induced by HQ17-2 was also observed in clinical isolates and biofilm-grown cells. HQ17-2 could inhibit swarming in the wild-type and rppA mutant but not in the rcsB mutant, indicating that HQ17-2 inhibits swarming through the RcsB-dependent pathway, a two-component signaling pathway negatively regulating swarming and virulence factor expression. The inhibition of hemolysin activity by HQ17-2 is also mediated through the RcsB-dependent pathway, because HQ17-2 could not inhibit hemolysin activity in the rcsB mutant. Moreover, the finding that HQ17-2 inhibits the expression of flhDC gene in the wild-type and rcsB-complemented strain but not in the rcsB mutant supports the notion. By contrast, HQ17-2 could increase PB susceptibility in the wild-type and rcsB mutant but not in the rppA mutant, indicating that HQ17-2 increases PB susceptibility through the RppA-dependent pathway, a signaling pathway positively regulating PB resistance. In addition, HQ17-2 could inhibit the promoter activities of rppA and pmrI, a gene positively regulated by RppA and involved in PB resistance, in the wild-type but not in the rppA mutant. The inhibition of rppA and pmrI expression caused lipopolysaccharide purified from HQ17-2-treated cells to have higher affinity for PB. Altogether, this study uncovers new biological effects of HQ17-2 and provides evidence for the potential of HQ17-2 in clinical applications.

Abstract
Stokes shift spectroscopy (S3) is an emerging approach toward cancer detection. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the diagnostic potential of the S3 technique for the detection and characterization of normal and cancerous prostate tissues. Pairs of cancerous and normal prostate tissue samples were taken from each of eight patients. Stokes shift spectra were measured by simultaneously scanning both the excitation and emission wavelengths while keeping a fixed wavelength interval Δλ=20 nm between them. The salient features of this technique are the highly resolved emission peaks and significant spectral differences between the normal and cancerous prostate tissues, as observed in the wavelength region of 250 to 600 nm. The Stokes shift spectra of cancerous and normal prostate tissues revealed distinct peaks around 300, 345, 440, and 510 nm, which are attributed to tryptophan, collagen, NADH, and flavin, respectively. To quantify the spectral differences between the normal and cancerous prostate tissues, two spectral ratios were computed. The findings revealed that both ratio parameters R1=I297/I345 and R2=I307/I345 were excellent diagnostic ratio parameters giving 100% specificity and 100% sensitivity for distinguishing cancerous tissue from the normal tissue. Our results demonstrate that S3 is a sensitive and specific technique for detecting cancerous prostate tissue.

Abstract
Investigation of the leaves and twigs of Callicarpa longissima resulted in the isolation of four new compounds (1-4), callilongisins A-D, and five known compounds, ursolic acid, 3-oxoanticopalic acid, (E)-6β-hydroxylabda-8(17),13-dien-15-oic acid, 5-hydroxy-3,6,7,4'-tetramethoxyflavone, and artemetin. Compounds 1-3 are 3,4-seco-abietane-type diterpenoids, and compound 4 is an analogue of a labdenoic-type diterpene. The structure of compound 1 was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Cytotoxicity against a human prostate cancer cell line (PC3) and anti-inflammatory activities of the isolated compounds were evaluated.

Abstract
HER2-overexpressing cancer cells are resistant to cisplatin (CDDP) and doxorubicin (DXR). Here we report that SV40 T/t-common polypeptide could specifically sensitize HER2-overexpressing cancer cells to CDDP and DXR and specifically enhance CDDP- or DXR-induced apoptosis in these cells. This activity of T/t-common may be attributed to its ability to inhibit Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL and to suppress ERK activity in CDDP- or DXR-treated HER2-overexpressing cancer cells. T/t-common could enhance the antitumor activity of DXR on HER2-overexpressing ovarian tumor in NOD/SCID mice, suggesting that combination therapy using T/t-common and chemotherapeutic agents may provide a new approach for treating HER2-overexpressing cancers.

Abstract
A portable rectal near infrared (NIR) scanning polarization imaging unit with an optical fiber-based rectal probe, designated as a Photonic Finger (PF), was designed, developed, built and tested. PF was used to image and locate the three dimensional (3D) positions of abnormal prostate tissue embedded inside normal prostate tissue. An inverse image reconstruction algorithm, namely Optical Tomography using Independent Component Analysis (OPTICA) was developed to unmix the signal from targets (cancerous tissue) embedded in a turbid media (normal tissue) in the backscattering imaging geometry. The Photonic Finger combined with OPTICA was ex vivo tested to characterize different target(s) inside different tissue medium, including cancerous prostate tissue embedded inside large pieces of normal tissue. This new developed instrument, Photonic Finger, may provide an alternative imaging technique, which is accurate, of high spatial resolution and non-or-less invasive for prostate cancers screening.

Abstract
Stokes Shift (SS) Spectroscopy (SSS) of normal and abnormal breast and prostate tissues were studied. SS spectra is measured by simultaneously scanning both the excitation and emission wavelengths while keeping a fixed wavelength interval of Δλ = 20 nm. Characteristic, highly resolved peaks and significant spectral differences between normal and different pathological tissues of breast and prostate tissues were observed. The SS spectra of normal and different pathological breast and prostate tissues show the distinct peaks around 300, 350, 450, 500 and 600 nm may be attributed to tryptophan, collagen, NADH, flavin and porphyrin, respectively. Results of the current study demonstrate that the SS spectral changes due to tryptophan, collagen, hemoglobin, NADH, FAD and porphyrin have good diagnostic potential; therefore can be targeted as native tumor markers.

Abstract
The native fluorescence spectra of retinoic acid (RA)-treated and untreated human breast cancerous cells excited with the selective wavelengths of 300 nm and 340 nm were measured and analyzed using a blind source separation method namely Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF). The results show that the fluorophores of human malignant breast cells change their compositions when they are treated with RA. The reduced contribution from tryptophan, NADH and flavin to the fluorescence of the treated breast cancerous cells was observed in comparison with that of the untreated cells. The results indicate that the decrease of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the RA-treated cells. The possible clinical applications of this native fluorescence study are discussed.

Abstract
Hepatic pit cells are a population of large granular lymphocytes that substantially contribute to hepatic immunity. Studies have proven that pit cells have a role in liver regeneration, but the details of the relationship between pit cells and liver regeneration is not clear at present. We subjected rats to a two-third hepatectomy; pit cells with high purity were obtained with Percoll density centrifugation and immunomagnetic bead methods, and the changes in mRNA levels in pit cells from the regenerating liver were monitored up to 168 h using a Rat Genome 230 2.0 Array composed of 25,020 distinct rat liver cDNA clones. Of the 25,020 genes analyzed, 612 known and 358 unknown genes were identified to be associated with liver regeneration. The 612 known genes are classified into up-regulation and down-regulation patterns based on the expression levels; they primarily participate in at least 23 biological activities based on gene ontology analysis. Together with gene function enrichment analysis, cytokines and a growth factor-mediated pathway in pit cells were activated at an early phase of liver regeneration; pit cell proliferation occurred from 24-72 h after liver hepatectomy; the machinery of pit cell differentiation commenced early and came into play late; an immune/inflammatory response was enhanced late. Expression pattern analysis of functionally classified genes in pit cells can give insights into the relationship between pit cells and liver regeneration.

Abstract
HER2 overexpression in various tumors results in increased angiogenesis, metastasis and reduced survival. Previously we reported that simian virus 40 T/t-common polypeptide can repress HER2 expression and specifically induce apoptosis in HER2-overexpressing cancer cells. In this study, we further explored the effect of T/t-common on tumor angiogenesis. HER2-overexpressing cancer cells were either infected with T/t-common-carrying adenovirus (rAd-T/t) or vector virus (rAd-V). The supernatant of infected cells were then used in the Tanswell migration, tube formation, and Matrigel plug assays to evaluate its ability to induce angiogenesis. Our data indicate that conditioned medium from rAd-T/t-infected cells had much lower ability to induce the migration and tube formation of endothelial cells and to induce blood vessel formation in Matrigel plugs than that from rAd-V-infected cells. T/t-common was found to be able to inhibit the expression of pro-angiogenic factor VEGF-A through inhibiting the HER2-ERK-HIF-1 signaling pathway. Moreover, T/t-common could induce the expression of anti-angiogenic factor TSP-1 through activating the HER2-p38 pathway. Finally we show that infection of HER2-overexpressing SK-OV-3 xenograft tumors by rAd-T/t virus could lead to inhibition of tumor growth and microvessel formation in NOD/SCID mice. Together, these data suggest that T/t-common is a potential gene therapeutic agent that can inhibit the growth and angiogenesis of HER2-overexpressing tumors.

Abstract
The Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen 2 (EBNA2) plays a key role in transformation of B-lymphocytes mediated by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and can induce tumor formation in transgenic mice. However, the precise mechanism underlying EBNA2-mediated tumorigenesis remains elusive. Here, we report that EBNA2 can compromise mitotic spindle checkpoint (MSC) induced by the spindle inhibitor nocodazole and cause chromosomal instability (CIN) in HEp-2, U2-OS and BJAB cells. When EBNA2-expressing cells were treated with nocodazole, they exited mitosis prematurely and initiated another round of DNA synthesis. Nucleolocalization of EBNA2 was essential for EBNA2 to compromise MSC and to cause CIN. The metaphase chromosome spread data indicated that the EBNA2-expressing U2-OS cells showed a more heterogenous chromosome number distribution than the vector-transfected and parental cells. The median chromosome number for EBNA2-expressing, vector-transfected and parental U2-OS cells is 75, 65 and 64, respectively. EBNA2 was shown to be able to downregulate mitotic arrest deficient 2 (MAD2) approximately 2- to 3-fold and upregulate polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) approximately 2-fold. The dysregulation of MAD2 and PLK1 may lead to activation of anaphase promoting complex/cyclosome and premature degradation of securin. Indeed, we found that when MSC was induced by nocodazole, securin was prematurely degraded in EBNA2-expressing cells. Finally, we show that EBNA2 could induce micronuclei and multinuclei formation in HEp-2 and U2-OS cells. Together, these studies reveal a new function of EBNA2 in cell-cycle regulation and may shed light on the role of EBNA2 in EBV-mediated tumorigenesis.

Abstract
Microcystins are a kind of cyclic hepatoxins produced by many species of cyanobacteria. The toxic effects of microcystins on animals and plants have been well studied. However, the reports about the effects of microcystins on microbial cells are very limited. In present paper, Escherichia coli was undertaken to determine the effect of microcystin-RR. These results suggested that microcystin-RR could prolong the growth of E. coli when exposed to high concentrations of microcystin-RR and cause the accumulation of ROS and induce the oxidant stress for a short time. The antioxidant system protects E. coli from oxidative damage.

Abstract
Cypate-octreote peptide analogue conjugate (Cytate) was investigated as a prostate cancer receptor-targeted contrast agent. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of Cytate were ranged in the near-infrared "tissue optical window." Time-resolved investigation of polarization-dependent fluorescence emitted from Cytate in solution as well as in cancerous and normal prostate tissues was conducted. Polarization preservation characteristics of Cytate in solution and tissues were studied. Fluorescence intensity emitted from the Cytate-stained cancerous prostate tissue was found to be much stronger than that from the Cytate-stained normal prostate tissue, indicating more Cytate uptake in the former tissue type. The polarization anisotropy of Cytate contained in cancerous prostate tissue was found to be larger than that in the normal prostate tissue, indicating a larger degree of polarization preservation in Cytate-stained cancerous tissue. The temporal profiles of fluorescence from Cytate solution and from Cytate-stained prostate tissue were fitted using a time-dependent fluorescence depolarization model. The photoluminescence imaging of Cytate-stained cancerous and normal prostate tissues was accomplished, showing the potential of Cytate as a fluorescence marker for prostate cancer detection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine health care seeking pathways for patients with tuberculosis (TB) and barriers related to these pathways in counties under the National TB Control Programme in rural China. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in two counties of east China in 2004-2005. A total of 557 TB patients were recruited and interviewed by physicians at the time of TB diagnosis. RESULTS Of 557 participants, 13.3% had presented to a specialised county TB dispensary (CTD) directly after onset of symptoms, 31.4% had first sought care at a village health station and 51.2% had visited a township or county hospital first. The proportion of referral by a first health care provider to a CTD was highest in county level hospitals (73.5%) and lowest in village health stations (21.7%). The most prompt pathway from first health care seeking to TB diagnosis was to visit a CTD directly, with a median provider's delay of only one day. There was an increase in provider's delay when more health facilities were involved. CONCLUSION To improve direct referral from general health care providers, especially village health care workers, to TB specialists would significantly shorten the delays in TB diagnosis in rural China.

Abstract
Resveratrol (3,5,4-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) is a phytoalexin compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. The effect of resveratrol on swarming and virulence factor expression of Proteus mirabilis, an important pathogen infecting the urinary tract, was determined on swarming agar plates with and without the compound. Bacteria harvested at different times were assayed for cell length and the production of flagella, haemolysin and urease. Resveratrol inhibited P. mirabilis swarming and virulence factor expression in a dose-dependent manner. Resveratrol significantly inhibited swarming at 15 microg ml(-1), and completely inhibited swarming at 60 microg ml(-1). Inhibition of swarming and virulence factor expression was mediated through RsbA, a His-containing phosphotransmitter of the bacterial two-component signalling system possibly involved in quorum sensing. Complementation of an rsbA-defective mutant with the rsbA gene restored its responsiveness to resveratrol. The compound also inhibited the ability of P. mirabilis to invade human urothelial cells. These findings suggest that resveratrol has potential to be developed as an antimicrobial agent against P. mirabilis infection.

Abstract
Previously, we reported that SV40 T/t-common polypeptide, which contains the NH(2)-terminal common domain of SV40 large T and small t antigens, can repress HER2/neu (also known as erbB-2) expression and consequently suppress the tumorigenic potential of the HER2/neu-overexpressing ovarian carcinoma cells. Here we report that T/t-common could specifically induce apoptosis in HER2/neu-overexpressing human cancer cell lines but not in nontransformed cell lines and HER2/neu low-expressing human cancer cell lines. The ability of T/t-common to induce apoptosis in HER2/neu-overexpressing cancer cells was derived from its ability to inhibit HER2/neu because reexpression of a large amount of HER2/neu could block apoptosis induced by T/t-common. T/t-common expression in HER2/neu-overexpressing SK-OV-3 cancer cells led to down-regulation of Bcl-2 and Bcl-X(L), and overexpression of Bcl-2 could inhibit the ability of T/t-common to induce apoptosis in these cells. Therefore, the apoptosis-inducing activity of T/t-common is related to its ability to inhibit Bcl-2 expression in HER2/neu-overexpressing cancer cells. Consistent with the apoptosis-inducing activity of T/t-common, we found that T/t-common could specifically inhibit the soft-agarose colony-forming ability of the HER2/neu-overexpressing human cancer cell lines but not that of the HER2/neu low-expressing human cancer cell lines. Finally, we showed that T/t-common could specifically sensitize HER2/neu-overexpressing human cancer cell lines, but not HER2/neu low-expressing human cancer cell lines, to chemotherapeutic agent etoposide. Together, these data suggest that T/t-common alone or in combination with chemotherapy may provide a new approach for treatment of cancers that overexpress HER2/neu.

Abstract
The salient properties of laser light and the way light interacts with biological tissues and molecular constituents of tissues offer possibilities for detection and diagnosis of cancer. In particular, the wavelength selectivity of tunable lasers, narrow bandwidth around the selected wavelength, and spectral brightness enable probing of key molecular constituents of tissues, and endow laser-based techniques with much desired diagnostic potential. This article presents an overview of some recent developments in optical imaging and optical biopsy of different types of cancers, and illustrates the diagnostic role of the color of light.

Abstract
Recurrent aphthous ulcerations (RAU) represent a common oral mucosal disease with altered humoral and cellular immunities. Tien-Hsien liquid (THL) is an extract of Chinese medicinal herbs with immunomodulating effects. Our previous study found that THL can modulate the antigen-stimulated proliferative response of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and T-cells isolated from RAU patients. In this study, we further tested whether THL can modulate the antigen-stimulated cytokine production by T-cells isolated from RAU patients. To achieve this goal, T-cells isolated from 19 RAU patients were incubated with phytohemagglutinin (PHA), glutaraldehyde-inactivated tetanus toxoid (TT), glucosyltransferase D (GtfD), or antigens of Streptococcus mutans in the presence or absence of THL. The levels of interleukin (IL)-2, interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), IL-6, or IL-10 in the supernatants of T-cell cultures were measured by cytokine enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. We found that THL significantly increased the PHA- or TT-stimulated TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-10 production by T-cells isolated from RAU patients. However, THL could also significantly decrease the TT-stimulated IL-2 production, the GtfD-stimulated IL-2, TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-10 production, and the S. mutans-stimulated IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, and IL-10 production by T-cells isolated from RAU patients. These results indicate that THL can modulate the antigen-stimulated cytokine production by T-cells isolated from RAU patients. Because RAU is probably a Thl-mediated disease with elevated levels of IL-2, IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha and IL-6 in either the patient's sera or oral lesions and these increased levels of cytokines can be reduced by THL, we suggest that THL may be a potential immunoceutical agent for treatment of RAU.

Abstract
The Cypate-Bombesin Peptide Analogue Conjugate (Cybesin) was used as a prostate tumor receptor-targeted contrast agent. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of Cybesin were measured and shown to exist in the NIR tissue "optical window". The spectral polarization imaging of Cybesin-stained prostate cancerous and normal tissues shows that prostate cancerous tissue takes-up more Cybesin than that of prostate normal tissue, making Cybesin a potential marker of prostate cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Tien-Hsien liquid (THL) is a commercially available Chinese herbal mixture that has been used as an anticancer dietary supplement for more than 10 years. We recently showed that THL has strong immunomodulatory effects on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and T cells. To investigate the antitumor activity of THL further, we sought to test whether THL could induce apoptosis in various human cancer cell lines based on the fact that THL contains several components with tumor killing functions. DESIGN The growth inhibitory effect of THL on human cervical carcinoma C-33A cells, human lung carcinoma H1299 cells, and human PBMC was assessed by counting viable cells using the trypan blue dye exclusion method. The apoptosis-inducing activity of THL in H1299 cells was assessed by analyzing the cells with four assays: (1) Hoechst 33258 nuclear DNA staining; (2) the terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay; (3) the nucleosomal DNA fragment ladder assay; and (4) the sub-G1 cell analysis. The activities of caspase-8, -9, and -3 in H1299 cells treated with or without THL were also measured to elucidate the possible mechanism underlying THL apoptosis-inducing effect. Finally, the apoptotic effect of THL on fifteen human cancer cell lines and normal human cells were analyzed by the TUNEL assay. RESULTS THL could induce apoptosis in all human cancer cell lines tested but not in normal human cells. THL treatment of H1299 cancer cells resulted in activation of caspase-8, -9, and -3 and the inhibitors of these caspases could partially block THL-induced apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS THL has been used by numerous patients with cancer for many years with no known adverse effect. Our present study showing that THL had a broad-range tumor killing function has provided a molecular basis underlying THL therapeutic activity. Furthermore, because THL had apoptotic effects only on cancer cells but not on normal cells, this selectivity suggests that THL could be a potential cancer therapeutic agent.

Abstract
The content of water in cancerous and normal human prostate in vitro tissues was shown to be different using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. The water absorption peaks at 1444 nm and 1944 nm are observed in both types of prostate tissues. The measurements show that less water is contained in cancerous tissues than in normal tissues. The OH stretching vibrational overtone mode at 1444 nm and other water overtone modes provide key spectroscopic fingerprints to detect cancer in prostate tissue. Transmission and backscattered spectral imaging were measured in cancer and normal prostate tissues. The degree of polarization for 700 nm, 800 nm, 1200 nm, and 1450 nm is larger for normal than for cancer tissues. The knowledge about water content offers a potential as a diagnostic tool to better determine and image cancer in prostate and in other tissues types such as breast and cervix using the absorption from vibrational overtones of H(2)O molecules in the NIR.
