Abstract
With the development and application of technologies such as facial scanning, intraoral scanning, virtual facebow and mandibular movement tracking in prosthodontics, dynamic virtual patients are gradually applied to preoperative analysis, esthetic diagnosis, treatment planning, and restorative implementation, becoming a research hotspot in recent years. This review focuses on data acquisition, construction of dynamic virtual patients and their application advantages, aiming to provide a reference for the clinical application of related digital technologies.

Abstract
Artificially performing chemical reactions in living biosystems to attain various physiological aims remains an intriguing but very challenging task. In this study, the Schiff base reaction was conducted in cells using Sc(OTf)3 as a catalyst, enabling the in situ synthesis of a hollow covalent organic polymer (HCOP) without external stimuli. The reversible Schiff base reaction mediated intracellular Oswald ripening endows the HCOP with a spherical, hollow porous structure and a large specific surface area. The intracellularly generated HCOP reduced cellular motility by restraining actin polymerization, which consequently induced mitochondrial deactivation, apoptosis, and necroptosis. The presented intracellular synthesis system inspired by the Schiff base reaction has strong potential to regulate cell fate and biological functions, opening up a new strategic possibility for intervening in cellular behavior.

Abstract
The practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) is still hindered by several technical issues, including severe polysulfide shuttling and sluggish redox kinetics, which reduces the sulfur utilization and further results in low energy density. Herein, amorphous-crystalline heterostructured MnO2 (ACM) prepared through a simple calcination process was employed as the functional interlayer to play a double role as effective trapper and multifunctional electrocatalyst for LSBs. ACM not only combines the strong sulfur chemisorption of the amorphous MnO2 (AM) and fast Li+ transportation of the crystalline MnO2(CM) but also accelerates the interface charge transfer at the amorphous/crystalline interfaces. The LSBs with such unique interlayer exhibited an excellent rate performance of 1155.5 mAh·g-1 at 0.2 C and 692.9 mAh·g-1 at 3 C and a low decay rate of 0.071% per cycle over 500 cycles at 0.5 C. Even for a high sulfur loading of 5 mg·cm-2 at 0.1 C, a high capacity retention of 92.3% could also be achieved after 100 cycles. The concept of amorphous-crystalline heterostructures prepared by crystallization regulation might also be used for other electronic devices and catalyst designs.

Abstract
Constructing optical nanoprobes with superior performance is highly desirable for sensitive and accurate assays. Herein, we develop a facile room-temperature strategy for the fabrication of green emissive carbon nanoclusters (CNCs) with dual-exciting centers for the dual-channel sensing of hemin. The formation of the CNCs is attributed to the crosslinking polymerization of the precursors driven by the Schiff base reaction between ethylenediamine and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone. Most importantly, the proposed CNCs have a unique excitation-independent green emission (518 nm) with two excitation centers at 260 nm (channel 1) and 410 nm (channel 2). The dual-exciting central emission can serve as dual-channel fluorescence (FL) signals for highly sensitive and reliable detection of hemin based on the inner filter effect. Because of the great spectral overlap difference between the absorption spectrum of hemin and the excitation lights of the CNCs in the two channels, hemin has a different quenching effect on FL emission from different channels. The dual-channel signals of the CNCs can detect hemin in the range of 0.075–10 μM (channel 1) and 0.25–10 μM (channel 2), respectively. These findings not only offer new guidance for the facile synthesis of dual-exciting central CNCs but also establish a reliable sensing platform for the analysis of hemin in complex matrixes.

Intervention mapping (IM) is a framework for formulating theory-and evidence-based health education projects with participatory approaches from ecological perspectives.The intervention program designed via IM plays a role in reducing the exposure of cancer risk factors,increasing cancer prevention behaviors,and promoting early cancer screening and rehabilitation of cancer patients.This study summarizes the characteristics,implementation steps,and application status of IM in tertiary prevention of cancer,aiming to provide reference for the application of IM in the health education projects for cancer in China.

Abstract
Here, hydrophilic carbon dots (H-CDs) are prepared by a facile room temperature method. The strength of hydrogen bonds can be controlled by introducing proton and aprotic solvents, respectively, so as to realize the tunable aggregation state of H-CDs. Because of the ultrasensitive response to dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), H-CDs can serve as optical probes for detecting DMSO in a linear range of 0.005% to 0.75% and with a detection limit of 0.001%.

Abstract
Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries (LSBs) have been considered one of the most potential candidates to substitute traditional Li-ion batteries (LIBs), owing to their high theoretical energy density and low cost. Nevertheless, the shuttle effect and the sluggish redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) have long been obstacles to realizing stable LSBs with high reversible capacity. In this study, we proposed a metal-semiconductor (Mo and MoO2) heterostructure with the hollow microsphere morphology as an effective Mott-Schottky electrocatalyst to boost sulfur electrochemistry. The hollow structure can physically inhibit the shuttling of LiPSs and accommodate the volume fluctuation during cycling. More importantly, the built-in electric field at the heterointerfacial sites can effectively accelerate the reduction of LiPSs and oxidation of Li2S, thereby reaching a high sulfur utilization. With the assistance of the Mo/MoO2 catalyst, the cell exhibited prominent rate capability and stable long-term cycling performance, showing a high capacity of 630 mA h·g-1 at 4 C and a low decay of 0.073% at 1 C after 500 cycles. Even with high areal sulfur loading of 10.0 mg·cm-2, high capacity and good cycle stability were achieved at 0.2 C under lean electrolyte conditions (E/S ratio of 6 μL·mg-1).

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs), as new type of carbon-based nanoparticles, are considered to be an aggregate with irreversible polymerization. Achieving the reversible tunability of CDs luminescence based on their reversible polymerization is a challenging subject. Herein, we, for the first time, design and construct the blue-emitting CDs with reversible polymerization by a room-temperature Schiff base reaction between tannic acid and ethylenediamine. The formation of CDs is proven to be due to the crosslinking polymerization of precursors caused by imine bond. As a dynamic covalent bond, imine bond endows CDs with controllable structural transformation properties, and the prepared CDs can be depolymerized and polymerized reversibly by pH-controlled imine bond cleavage and re-formation. These properties of reversible fluorescence photoswitching make the CDs have a good application prospect in reversible information encryption.

Abstract
Aiming to solve the poor compactibility of the alcoholic extract of Zingiberis Rhizoma(ZR), this study explored the feasibility of its physical modification using co-spray drying with a small amount of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose(HPMC). Based on the univariate analysis, the influence of two independent variables(the HPMC content in the product and the solid content of spray material) on the powder properties and tablet properties of the dried product was investigated by the central composite design. With the tensile strength and disintegration time of the tablets as the evaluation indexes, the optimal prescription was determined as follows: the HPMC content was 15% and the solid content of spray material was 25.6%. The accuracy of the regression model established for predicting tensile strength and disintegration time of tablets was verified, and the results revealed that the measured values were close to the predicted ones with deviations of 0.47% and-8.2%, indicating good prediction and reproducibility of the model. The tensile strength(4.24 MPa) of tablets prepared with the optimal prescription was 3.59 times that(1.18 MPa, far lower than the baseline of 2 MPa for qualified tablets) with the spray-dried powder of the ZR. On the other hand, due to the addition of HPMC, the disintegration time of tablets increased from 7.3 min to 24.6 min. On the whole, this study provided a new strategy to solve the common problem of poor compactibility of raw Chinese medicinal materials, which facilitated the successful preparation of Chinese medicinal tablets with high drug loads.

Abstract
Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most frequent cause of chronic liver diseases worldwide. At present, there are no effective pharmacological therapies for NAFLD except lifestyle intervention-mediated weight loss. Atractylenolide III (ATL III), the major bioactive component found in Atractylode smacrocephala Koidz, has been shown to exert anti-oxidant, anti-tumor, anti-allergic response, anti-bacterial effects and cognitive protection. Here we investigate the therapeutic potential and underlying mechanisms of ATL III for the treatment of NAFLD. Methods: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) and treated with ATL III. Lipid accumulation was analyzed by Oil Red O staining in liver tissues and free fatty acids (FFAs)-treated hepatocytes. AMP-activated protein (AMPK) and sirtuin 1(SIRT1) signaling pathways were inhibited by Compound C and EX527 in vitro, respectively. Small-interfering RNA (siRNA) was used to knockdown adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1) expression in HepG2 cells. Results: ATL III treatment ameliorated liver injury and hepatic lipid accumulation in the HFD-induced NAFLD mouse model as demonstrated by that ATL III administration significantly reduced serum levels of alanine aminotransferase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, triglycerides, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein. Furthermore, treatment with ATL III alleviated hepatic oxidative stress, inflammation and fibrosis in the HFD feeding model. To study the underlying mechanisms, we performed Computer Aided Design assay and found that open-formed AdipoR1 and adiponectin receptor 2 were the potential receptors targeted by ATL III. Interestingly, HFD feeding or FFAs treatment only reduced hepatic AdipoR1 expression, while such reduction was abolished by ATL III administration. In addition, in vitro treatment with ATL III activated the AdipoR1 downstream AMPK /SIRT1 signaling pathway and reduced lipid deposition in HepG2 cells, which was diminished by silencing AdipoR1. Finally, inhibition of AMPK or SIRT1, the AdipoR1 downstream signaling, abolished the protective effects of ATL III on lipid deposition and oxidative stress in FFAs-treated HepG2 cells. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that ATL III is a therapeutic drug for the treatment of NAFLD and such protective effect is mediated by activating hepatic AdipoR1-mediated AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the chemical characters of water-extract of Baqi Lingmao formula (BQLM formula) and its effects on anti-liver injury in model mice and live cells. METHODS BQLM formula was composed of ten herbal medicines. We determined the contents of alkaloids, saponins, phenolic acids and flavonoid in BQLM formula by UV spectrophotometry. The active components of alkaloids and phenolic acids in BQLM formula were identified by HPLC chromatography. The anti-hepatic injury effects of BQLM formula were investigated with concanavalin A (ConA)-induced hepatitis model of mice, human liver LO2 and HepG2.2.15 cells. RESULTS BQLM formula (2 and 10 g/kg, orally) significantly improved the damages of liver tissues and functions caused by ConA in mice, reduced the infiltration of inflammatory cells into liver and inhibited the inflammatory cytokine secretion of interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6. BQLM formula simultaneously decreased the levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase of liver and serum, and recovered the superoxide dismutase and catalase activities of liver to normal levels in ConA-induced hepatic-injury mice. The serum of BQLM formula group stimulated the human liver LO2 cell proliferation in vitro. Further, BQLM formula obviously promoted the proliferation of normal hepatocytes (LO2 cells) and inhibited the hepatocytes death induced by ConA. It also significantly inhibited the proliferation of HepG2.2.15 cells and decreased the secretion of HBsAg and HBeAg in vitro. CONCLUSIONS BQLM formula has anti-inflammation and anti-hepatitis virus Beffects, and is capable of improving liver injury in vivo and in vitro.

Abstract
Cell polarization exists in a variety of tissues to regulate cell behaviors and functions. Space constraint (spatially limiting cell extension) and adhesion induction (guiding adhesome growth) are two main ways to induce cell polarization according to the microenvironment topographies. However, the mechanism of cell polarization induced by these two ways and the downstream effects on cell functions are yet to be understood. Here, space constraint and adhesion induction guiding cell polarization are achieved by substrate groove arrays in micro and nano size, respectively. Although the morphology of polarized cells is similar on both structures, the signaling pathways to induce the cell polarization and the downstream functions are distinctly different. The adhesion induction (nano-groove) leads to the formation of focal adhesions and activates the RhoA/ROCK pathway to enhance the myosin-based intracellular force, while the space constraint (micro-groove) only activates the formation of pseudopodia. The enhanced intracellular force caused by adhesion induction inhibits the chromatin condensation, which promotes the osteogenic differentiation of stem cells. This study presents an overview of cell polarization and mechanosensing at biointerface to aid in the design of novel biomaterials.

Abstract
Ratiometric fluorescence (FL) probes are highly desirable for highly sensitive and reliable assays. Dual-emitting carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) have great application prospects in building ratiometric FL sensors. However, dual-emitting CPDs are usually synthesized at high temperatures and high pressures, which not only increases the cost but also complicates the structure of CPDs. Here, we developed a facile strategy for the fabrication of dual-emitting CPDs at room temperature using tetrachlorobenzoquinone and ethylenediamine. The formation of CPDs was induced by Schiff base condensation reaction, enabling the following cross-linking polymerization process. The dual-emitting CPDs demonstrate good photostability and antioxidant capacity. Importantly, the typical dual-emission bands of the as-prepared CPDs are found to have a blue emission band at 445 nm with a maximum excitation of 350 nm and a yellow emission band at 575 nm with a maximum excitation of 440 nm. Based on the dual-emitting property of CPDs, a ratiometric FL nanoprobe is obtained for sensitive determination of vitamin B12 (VB12), as the inner filtering and static quenching effects between VB12 and CPDs allow effective quenching of the blue FL of CPDs, while the yellow FL is maintained. The established assay shows linear detection ranges of 0.25-100 μM with a low limit of detection of 0.14 μM. These findings provide new guidance for the facile preparation of CPDs with excellent dual-emitting optical properties, indicating good prospects in biosensing.

Abstract
Adaptive intervention(AI)is a methodology which dynamically evaluates adaptive variables at decision points and timely adjusts and develops tailored strategies to meet individual needs.The study reviewed the origin and development and elaborated the core elements(including intervention outcomes,intervention options,decision points,tailoring variables,and decision rules)and the classification of AI.Based on the literature,the key points of the design and implementation of AI were prospected,which can provide evidence for the research and development of health behavior intervention.

Abstract
(Z)-4-(Iodomethylene)-3-(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)-3,4-dihydroquinolin-2(1H)-ones and fluorinated 3,3-disubstituted 2-oxindoles are synthesized and evaluated for anti-hepatic fibrosis. CCK-8 assay indicates that most of the compounds have no obvious cytotoxicity on the human hepatic stellate cells (HSC) cell line. Collagen I and fibrosin expression levels are tested by ELISA, and the results show that several compounds can inhibit the expression of collagen I and fibrosin. Additionally, results from real time-PCR reveal that only one compound can inhibit the expression level of α-SMA, suggesting that this compound can inhibit the activation of the HSC cell line. These studies demonstrate that this compound may be a potential novel drug candidate for anti-hepatic fibrosis (approximately 5-6 lines).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the interaction effects of rs10757278 polymorphisms at 9p21 locus and traditional risk factors on coronary heart disease (CHD) in Xinjiang, China. METHODS This case-control study consecutively enrolled 310 unrelated consecutive CHD patients aged 18-70 years old. All study participants were recruited between January and December 2017 from The Heart Center of The First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University. CHD patients were confirmed by coronary angiography (≥50% diameter stenosis in at least one of the major coronary arteries) according to the American Heart Association criteria for the confirmation of CHD. Healthy subjects were randomly selected from the occupational population, who received physical examination in our hospital and matched to cases on the basis of age (±3 years) and sex, those without medical history of cardiovascular diseases, and 536 subjects were selected as the control group after medical history inquiry, physical examination, cardiac ultrasound, electrocardiogram, and other blood biochemical examinations in the hospital. The occupational stress was evaluated by an effort-reward imbalance questionnaire. An epidemiological survey was conducted to collect clinical data. Chi-squared test, analysis of variance, and binary logistic regression analysis were adopted. RESULTS Both the case and the control groups showed significant difference in smoking, drinking, physical activity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, family history of CHD, and body mass index (BMI) (all P < 0.05); prevalence of CHD was not related to occupational stress. There was no significant difference in occupational stress level between the 2 groups (P > 0.05); Differences in rs10757278 genotype between the case group and the control groups were statistically significant; binary logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the risk factors of CHD. After adjustment for age and sex, significant increased risk effects for CHD were found to be associated with smoking [odds ratio (OR) = 2.311; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04-2.499; P < 0.001], physical exercise (OR = 1.365; 95% CI: 1.137-1.639; P < 0.001), hypertension (OR = 4.627; 95% CI: 2.165-10.764; P < 0.001), family history of CHD (OR = 4.103; 95% CI: 3.169-6.892; P < 0.001), BMI (OR = 2.484; 95% CI: 2.036-3.03; P < 0.001), and GG genotype at rs10757278 (OR = 1.978; 95% CI: 1.413-2.769; P < 0.001); We noted that a significant interaction association between GG genotype at rs10757278 and CHD differs across categories of smoking, hypertension, family history of CHD, and BMI. CONCLUSION GG genotype at rs10757278 may be a risk factor for CHD. And there are interaction effects between GG genotype of rs10757278 in region 9p21 gene and traditional risk factors.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the application value of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in detecting early-stage diabetic nephropathy and to assess the damage of ralated renal function. Methods: A total of 52 patients with type 2 diabetes diagnosed in Zhongda Hospital were collected from April 2016 to May 2017 and were assigned to DM group (diabetes without nephropathy, n=32) and DN group (diabetes with nephropathy, n=20) according to detection of microalbuminuria, a cohort of healthy recipients were included as control group (n=27) in the meantime. All of the subjects underwent IVIM and DTI examination. The cortical and medullary parameters[IVIM: perfusion fraction f, tissue diffusivity D, pseudodiffuvisity D(*;) DTI: fractional anisotropy FA, apparent diffusion coefficient ADC, principal diffusivities (λ1, λ2, λ3)]were obtained respectively and were compared among groups. The relationship between MRI related parameters and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were statistically investigated; and diagnostic performance of IVIM and DTI in discriminating DM and DN group was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic analysis. Results: The cortical and medullary f, D values in DN group were lower than those in DM group and control group (F=17.32, 15.69, 6.71, 10.94, all P<0.05). D values of all subjects showed positive correlations with eGFR (cortex r=0.518, medulla r=0.538, both P<0.05). The diagnostic efficiency of cortical f values to discriminate diabetes and diabetic nephropathy was 0.817, the cut-off value was 0.205. The medullary FA value in DM group was lower than that in control group ((0.371±0.051 vs 0.423±0.043, t=4.188, P<0.05); and the medullary FA value in DN group (0.315±0.062) was lower than that in control and DM group (F=25.08, P<0.05). The medullary λ3 values in DM group and DN group were all significantly higher than that in control group (F=7.86, P<0.05). The diagnostic efficiency of medullary FA values to discriminate diabetes and diabetic nephropathy was 0.763, the cut-off value was 0.344. Conclusion: IVIM and DTI can reflect the abnormal perfusion and diffusion during early-stage diabetic nephropathy and have the potential value to assess the damage of ralated renal function.

Abstract
Jejunal obstruction due to a phytobezoar is clinically rare. A male patient was admitted to our hospital with abdominal pain. He suffered a very threatening process from diagnosis to surgery. Considering that this is a rare complication caused by common clinical diseases and is therefore vulnerable to delayed diagnosis and treatment, this case has good guiding significance for clinical gastroenterologists.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS To investigate the clinical effects of the combination therapy with Bushen Formula (BSF) plus enticavir (ETV) on chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with suboptimal response to ETV and explore the regulatory mechanisms of BSF on B cells-mediated humoral immunity. METHODS Sixty-four HBeAg-positive CHB patients with suboptimal response to ETV were enrolled, and were randomly assigned into control group (C-Group, placebo combined with ETV for 12 months) or treatment group (T-Group, BSF combined with ETV for 12 months). Serum samples from 57 treatment-naïve CHB patients and 15 healthy controls were collected. Serum HBV DNA levels were evaluated by real-time PCR. Characteristics of peripheral blood B-cell subtypes were analyzed by flow cytometry. Serum HBV markers and B cell-activating factor (BAFF) levels were detected by ELISA. Chinese medicine symptom complex score was evaluated and recorded. RESULTS After treatment, the rates of patients with a reduction of HBsAg > 0.5 log10 IU/ml or 1.0 log10 IU/ml and the rates of HBeAg clearance in T-Group were all higher than those in C-group, with no significant intergroup difference. Only in T-Group, Chinese medicine symptom complex score and the frequency of total B cells were significantly decreased, and the frequencies of Bm1, CD24+CD27-switched B cells and plasma cells were markedly increased after treatment compared with those before treatment. Compared with healthy controls, serum BAFF levels in treatment-naïve CHB patients were increased, and there was a significant positive correlation between serum BAFF and HBsAg levels. However, serum BAFF levels did not differ after treatment in T-Group and C-Group. CONCLUSIONS The combination therapy with BSF plus ETV promotes the reduction of HBsAg level and the clearance of HBeAg in CHB patients with partial response to ETV through regulating the differentiation of B-cell subsets.

Abstract
Background There is observational evidence suggesting that high vitamin D concentrations may protect against lung cancer. To investigate this hypothesis in detail, we measured circulating vitamin D concentrations in prediagnostic blood from 20 cohorts participating in the Lung Cancer Cohort Consortium (LC3). Patients and methods The study included 5313 lung cancer cases and 5313 controls. Blood samples for the cases were collected, on average, 5 years before lung cancer diagnosis. Controls were individually matched to the cases by cohort, sex, age, race/ethnicity, date of blood collection, and smoking status in five categories. Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry was used to separately analyze 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 [25(OH)D2] and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] and their concentrations were combined to give an overall measure of 25(OH)D. We used conditional logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for 25(OH)D as both continuous and categorical variables. Results Overall, no apparent association between 25(OH)D and risk of lung cancer was observed (multivariable adjusted OR for a doubling in concentration: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.91, 1.06). Similarly, we found no clear evidence of interaction by cohort, sex, age, smoking status, or histology. Conclusion This study did not support an association between vitamin D concentrations and lung cancer risk.

Abstract
Objective: To observe the senescent effect of human pulmonary arterial endothelial cells (HPAEC) stimulated by cigarette smoke extract (CSE) and the effect of secretion of senescent cells on human pulmonary arterial smooth muscles cell (HPASMC) proliferation and migration. Methods: HPAEC was treated with different concentrations of CSE in vitro and cell proliferation was determined by CCK8, senescence cells analyzed by detecting the β-gal activity, and the senescent proteins of cells measured by Western blot. The concentration of senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) was detected by ELISA and the expression of MCP-1 and TGF-β1 was measured by Real-time PCR. The number of the proliferated cells was measured by Transwell assay and immunoflurescence. Results: The HPAEC was aging with the stimulation concentration of CSE increasing and the stimulation time prolonging (P<0.05). Western blot indicated that the senescent associated protein p53 or p21 increased markedly after 48 h and 72 h CSE-exposure (n=3, P<0.05). The SA-β-Gal staining showed that the number of senescent cells increased as the exposure time prolonged. Compared with the control group, cell viability of 48 h group(1.8±0.1) and 72 h group (1.8±0.1) decreased significantly. The flow cytometry showed a significant difference between the CSE group(14.1±1.2) and the control group(28.5±1.8) in S phase(P<0.01), indicating cell cycle arrest. The SASP was increasing as the CSE-exposure prolonged. Compared with the control group(177±39), the 48 h group(460±43) and the 72 h group(609±64) showed a marked increase in MCP-1(P<0.05). For TGF-β1, it had a same tendency and a significant difference between the control group(121±18) and the 48 h group(413±32) or 72 h group(606±67, both P<0.05). In the meantime, the bFGF increased after 48 h stimulation(291±13, P<0.05). Besides MCP-1, TGF-β1 showed a significant difference between the control group and the 72 h CSE-exposure group (P<0.01). Premature cells could secrete SASP which induced HPASMC proliferation. After different times of conditioned medium stimulation, HPASMC proliferated especially at 72 h(P<0.05) . The immnoflorescence and Transwell assay confirmed this finding. Conclusion: CSE could induce senescence of HPAEC and SASP production which improved HPASMC proliferation and migration.

Abstract
There are Seven Medical Classics recorded in the Han shu Yi wen zhi(Bibliography in Annals of the Han Dynasty), among which the 18-volume Huang di nei jing (Huangdi's Internal Classic) is not the current edition of Ling shu (Miraculous Pivot) and Su wen(Plain Questions). The present edition of Huang di nei jing containing these two works might be merged in the Eastern Han Dynasty, benefited from the invention of Cai Lun's papermaking technique and the development of Nine needles, especially filiform needle manufacturing. Huang di nei jing was compiled on the basis of two major integrations: The first was joined by some medical experts such as Bian Que and tai yi ling (minister of imperial physicians) of the Qin State by using the language in the Warring States, contributing mainly to the theoretical system and forming its basic academic framework; The second was the second Royal book-collating activity in the Eastern Han Dynasty (100-110), which had revised the seven volumes of Chinese Medical Classics and incorporated them into two parts, Ling Shu and Su Wen, together with Bian Que's medical works and the new contents from the introductory Chapter on Nine Needles and Twelve Yuan(origin) Acupoints.

Abstract
Objective: To study the relationship between the changes of brain network and cognition in patients with benign epilepsy of childhood with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) by using long term video electroencephalogram (VEEG) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) technology. Methods: Eleven patients with right-handed were recruited (from April 2015 to September 2016) from epilepsy specialist outpatients and functional department of neurosurgery of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital. They all underwent the long term VEEG monitoring (one sleep cycle was included at least). According to the spike-wave index (SWI) during slow ware sleep, they were divided into two groups: SWI<50% (5 cases) and SWI≥50% (6 cases). All the patients were assessed with cognitional test including language, execution, memory and attention. They also underwent the head MRI, RS-fMRI examinations. Then the results were comparatively analysed. Results: (1)There were no statisticaly significance in sex, age, age of onset, disease course, total number of seizures, years of education (P>0.05). The Full Intelligence Quotient (FIQ) (87±18), Verbal Intelligence Quotient (VIQ) (88±15) and Performance Intelligence Quotient (PIQ) (89±20) of SWI≥50% group were lower than SWI<50% group(118±8, 114±11, 119±5) and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05). (2)There was a negative correlation between the FIQ (P=0.002), VIQ (P=0.006), PIQ (P=0.001) and SWI. The FIQ, VIQ and PIQ had no correlation with the sex, age, age of onset, disease course, total number of seizures, years of education (P>0.05). (3)Compared with SWI<50% group, SWI≥50% group showed increased regional homogeneity (ReHo) in the bilateral precentral gyrus, premotor area and the subcortical structure, the right temporal lobe and the bilateral insular lobe(P<0.05); while they showed decreased ReHo in the posterior cingulate gyrus, right posterior inferior temporal lobe and right occipital lobe(P<0.05). Conclusion: The change of the brain network which is caused by the paradoxical and constant discharge during slow ware sleep in patients with BECTS may affect the development of cognition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study brain networks of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) to investigate whether TLE brain dysfunction have an impact on depression, using resting state functional magnetic resonance (RS-fMRI) detection technology. METHODS A total of 18 patients with TLE were included in this study. According to Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Hamilton's Depression Scale (HAMD)-17 score, we divided them into two groups: depression group 9 cases, non-depression group 9 cases. All patients underwent 3.0T MRI , RS-fMRI and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) examinations and then the results were analyzed. RESULTS Disease course of depression group was longer than non-depression group and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). RS-fMRI examination showed that depression group had more active brain areas and more extral temporal active areas than non-depression group (P<0.05). By compared with the non-depression group, we found more strong active brain areas including thalamus, and the default-mode network which involved in prefrontal cortex, precuneus, ventral anterior cingulate and hippocampus. We found the NAA and NAA/Cho+ Cr of the hippocampus which were ipsilateral to the advantage discharge side were decreased in 5/9 cases with depression in MRS and 3/5 cases had hippocampal atrophy, while the non-depression group had no obvious abnormalities. CONCLUSION The brain default-mode network activity in TLE patients with depression is increased and there is more extral temporal activation than the non-depression group; furthermore abnormal hippocampus structure is more common in depression group, which suggests that epileptic brain dysfunction may affect the development of depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer incidence rates are increasing among Asian women, likely due to the changes in risk factors caused by globalization. Trends in breast cancer rates among Chinese women may differ from other Asian regions due to the implementation of a nationwide family planning program and resulting changes in women's reproductive practices. Appraisal of cancer trends can direct cancer control and public health planning, but relevant studies in China are scarce due to a lack of long-term data. We sought to evaluate secular time trends in breast cancer incidence and mortality using 40 years of cancer registry data for women in urban Shanghai. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data on invasive breast cancer incidence and mortality were collected by the Shanghai Cancer Registry. Age-standardized rates (ASRs) for incidence and mortality were calculated using the Segi/Doll 1960 world standard population. Age, period, and birth cohort effects were evaluated using age-period-cohort (APC) Poisson regression models. Overall linear trends, interpreted as the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC), were derived from the net drift in age-drift models. RESULTS A total of 53 885 breast cancer cases and 17 235 breast cancer-specific deaths were documented among women in urban Shanghai between 1 January 1973 and 31 December 2012. Breast cancer incidence and mortality ASRs increased by 141.2% and 26.6%, respectively. Significant age, cohort, and period effects were identified in both incidence and mortality APC models; cohort effects were pronounced. Overall, a substantial increase in breast cancer incidence (EAPC = 2.96%/year) and a moderate increase in breast cancer mortality (EAPC = 0.87%/year) was observed. A notable downward trend in mortality was identified among younger women born after 1960. CONCLUSIONS Forty years of cancer registry data document a tremendous increase in incidence and a slight increase in mortality for breast cancer among women in Shanghai. Effective, appropriate, and affordable breast cancer prevention and control strategies are urgently needed in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While studies have shown that poor oral health status may increase the risk of cancer, evidence of a specific association with the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) is inconclusive. We evaluated the association between oral health and CRC risk using data from three large cohorts: the Shanghai Men's Health Study (SMHS), the Shanghai Women's Health Study (SWHS), and the Southern Community Cohort Study (SCCS), and carried out a meta-analysis of results from other relevant published studies. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study applied a nested case-control study design and included 825 cases/3298 controls from the SMHS/SWHS and 238 cases/2258 controls from the SCCS. The association between oral health status (i.e. tooth loss/tooth decay) and CRC risk was assessed using conditional logistic regression models. A meta-analysis was carried out based on results from the present study and three published studies. RESULTS We found that tooth loss was not associated with increased risk of CRC. ORs and respective 95% CIs associated with loss of 1-5, 6-10, and >10 teeth compared with those with full teeth are 0.87 (0.69-1.10), 0.93 (0.70-1.24), and 0.85 (0.66-1.11) among SMHS/SWHS participants; and 1.13 (0.72-1.79), 0.87 (0.52-1.43), and 1.00 (0.63-1.58) for those with loss of 1-4, 5-10, and >10 teeth among SCCS participants. Data regarding tooth decay were available in the SCCS, but were not associated with CRC risk. Meta-analysis confirmed the null association between tooth loss/periodontal disease and CRC risk (OR 1.05, 95% CI 0.86-1.29). CONCLUSION In this analysis of three cohorts and a meta-analysis, we found no evidence supporting an association between oral health and CRC risk.

Abstract
AIM The protective role of invariant natural killer T cells (iNKTs) against hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains controversial. We sought to clarify the role of peripheral iNKT cells during chronic HBV infection. METHODS Sixty patients with chronic HBV infection were categorized into an immune tolerance phase (HBV-IT) (n = 16), an immune clearance phase (HBV-IC) (n = 19) and an inactive carrier phase (HBV-IA) (n = 25). Twenty healthy individuals were enrolled as healthy controls. Another 21 HBeAg-positive patients were administrated with entecavir (0.5 mg/day) for 6 months. The percentages of circulating iNKT cells and their IFN-γ and IL-4 expression levels were examined by flow cytometry. The relationships between serum HBV DNA, ALT levels, the percentages of iNKT cells, and their IFN-γ and IL-4 levels were analyzed. RESULTS Compared to healthy controls, the percentage of iNKT cells decreased in HBV-IT, but increased in HBV-IC and HBV-IA. Circulating IFN-γ-producing iNKT cells gradually increased, whereas IL-4-producing iNKT cells gradually decreased from HBV-IT stage to HBV-IC and HBV-IA stages. The frequency of iNKT cells and their IFN-γ levels were reversely correlated with viral load. The levels of IL-4 expressed by iNKT cells were positively correlated to viral load and the serum ALT levels. After anti-virus therapy, the percentage of IFN-γ-producing iNKT cells increased while the percentage of IL-4-producing iNKT cells decreased. CONCLUSIONS During chronic HBV infection, the percentages of peripheral iNKT cells and its cytokines expressions of IFN-γ and IL-4 showed dynamic changes. The expression levels of IFN-γ and IL-4 were correlated with the clearance of HBV and liver injury.

Abstract
The association between the HLA-DP single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs3077 and rs9277535 and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been reported, but results have been inconclusive and controversial. Therefore, to investigate the relationship between these HLA-DP SNPs and HCC susceptibility, a meta-analysis of studies published before January 2014 was carried out using the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for HLA-DP alleles, and for co-dominant, dominant, and recessive genotype models of each SNP, based on fixed- or random-effects models. A total of nine studies from six published articles were included. The association study between rs3077 and HCC susceptibility was performed in four independent comparisons that contained 1871 cases with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC and 3207 carriers with persistent HBV. Association between rs9277535 and HCC susceptibility was examined in five separate comparisons that contained 2017 cases and 3930 carriers. Our analysis indicated a significant association of rs3077 and rs9277535 with HCC susceptibility, suggesting that rs3077 might act beneficially against HCC susceptibility (A vs G: OR = 0.884, 95%CI = 0.803-0.973, P = 0.012; GA vs GG: OR = 0.842, 95%CI = 0.733-0.967, P = 0.015; AA+GA vs GG: OR = 0.848, 95%CI = 0.744-0.968, P = 0.014), and that rs9277535 might promote HCC susceptibility (AA vs GA: OR = 1.202, 95%CI = 1.011-1.428, P = 0.037). This study suggested that HLA-DP rs3077 and rs9277535 polymorphisms are associated with HCC susceptibility in the Asian population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peptic ulcer and its treatments have been associated to pancreatic cancer risk, although the evidence is inconsistent. METHODS We pooled 10 case-control studies within the Pancreatic Cancer Case-control Consortium (PanC4), including 4717 pancreatic cancer cases and 9374 controls, and estimated summary odds ratios (OR) using multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS The OR for pancreatic cancer was 1.10 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.98-1.23] for history of ulcer (OR = 1.08 for gastric and 0.97 for duodenal ulcer). The association was stronger for a diagnosis within 2 years before cancer diagnosis (OR = 2.43 for peptic, 1.75 for gastric, and 1.98 for duodenal ulcer). The OR was 1.53 (95% CI 1.15-2.03) for history of gastrectomy; however, the excess risk was limited to a gastrectomy within 2 years before cancer diagnosis (OR = 6.18, 95% CI 1.82-20.96), while no significant increased risk was observed for longer time since gastrectomy. No associations were observed for pharmacological treatments for ulcer, such as antacids, H2-receptor antagonists, or proton-pump inhibitors. CONCLUSIONS This uniquely large collaborative study does not support the hypothesis that peptic ulcer and its treatment materially affect pancreatic cancer risk. The increased risk for short-term history of ulcer and gastrectomy suggests that any such association is due to increased cancer surveillance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies evaluating the association between cruciferous vegetables (CVs) intake and female lung cancer risk have produced inconsistent results. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study followed 74 914 Chinese women aged 40-70 years who participated in the Shanghai Women's Health Study. CV intake was assessed through a validated food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) at baseline and reassessed during follow-up. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence interval (CIs) were estimated by using Cox proportional hazards models. Furthermore, we carried out a meta-analysis of all observational studies until December 2011. RESULTS After excluding the first 2 years of follow-up, 417 women developed lung cancer over a mean of 11.1 years of follow-up. An inverse association of borderline statistical significance was observed between CV consumption and female lung cancer risk, with HR for the highest compared with the lowest quartiles of 0.73 (95% CI 0.54-1.00, P trend = 0.1607). The association was strengthened in analyses restricting to never smokers, with the corresponding HR of 0.59 (95% CI 0.40-0.87, P trend = 0.0510). The finding of an inverse association between CV intake and lung cancer risk in women was supported by our meta-analysis of 10 included studies. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that CV consumption may reduce the risk of lung cancer in women, particularly among never smokers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No prospective study has investigated the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the risk of primary liver cancer (PLC) in mainland China, and little is known about the effect of diabetes duration on PLC risk. DESIGN Data from two population-based cohorts (the Shanghai Men's Health Study, SMHS, 2002-2006 and the Shanghai Women's Health Study, SWHS, 1996-2000) were thus used to assess the associations among T2DM, diabetes duration and PLC risk in Chinese population. RESULTS During follow-up through 2009, 344 incident PLC cases were identified among 60 183 men and 73 105 women. T2DM is significantly associated with the increased risk of PLC in both men [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.63, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06-2.51] and women (HR = 1.64, 95% CI 1.03-2.61). The highest risk of incident liver cancer was observed in the first 5 years after diabetes diagnosis, and decreased substantially with the prolonged diabetes duration (P(trend) < 0.001). No synergistic interaction in the development of PLC was found between diabetes and other known risk factors. CONCLUSIONS T2DM is associated with the increased risk of subsequent liver cancer within 5 years after diagnosis in Chinese population, suggesting that hyperinsulinaemia rather than hyperglycaemia is more likely to be a primary mediator for this association.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Do genetic polymorphisms which influence age at menarche in women of European ancestry also influence women of Chinese ancestry? SUMMARY ANSWER Many genetic variants influencing age at menarche in European populations appear to impact Chinese populations in a similar manner. WHAT IS KNOWN AND WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS Prior genome-wide association studies have uncovered 42 SNPs associated with age at menarche in European populations. This study is the first to demonstrate that many of the genetic determinants of age at menarche are shared between European and Chinese women. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING We evaluated 37 of 42 SNPs identified as associated with age at menarche from a recent, large meta-analysis, consisting primarily of women of European ancestry, in a population of 6929 Chinese women from Shanghai, China. We also constructed weighted genetic risk scores (GRSs) combining the number of effect variants for all 37 SNPs, or only the SNPs associated with age at menarche among our study population, to evaluate their joint influence on age at menarche. MAIN RESULTS For 32 of the 37 evaluated variants, the direction of the allele associations were the same between women of European ancestry and women of Chinese ancestry (P = 3.71 × 10(-6), binomial sign test); 9 of these were statistically significant. Subjects in the highest quintile of GRSs began menarche ∼5 months later than those in the lowest quintile. BIAS, LIMITATIONS AND GENERALIZABILITY TO OTHER POPULATIONS: Age at menarche was obtained by self-report, which can be subject to recall errors. The current analysis was restricted to loci which met or approached GWAS significance thresholds and did not evaluate loci which may act predominantly or exclusively in the Chinese population. The smaller sample size for our meta-analysis compared with meta-analyses conducted in European populations reduced the power to detect significant results. Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) typically have a positive relationship with obesity and diabetes, which are risk factors for liver cancer. However, studies on their association with liver cancer have yielded inconsistent results. Therefore, we assessed the association of GI, GL, and carbohydrates with liver cancer risk. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 72 966 women and 60 207 men from the Shanghai Women's Health Study (SWHS) and the Shanghai Men's Health Study (SMHS) were included for analysis. Food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) data were used to calculate daily dietary GI, GL, and carbohydrate intake. These values were energy adjusted and categorized into quintiles. The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated with adjustment for potential confounders. RESULTS After a median follow-up time of 11.2 years for the SWHS and 5.3 years for the SMHS, 139 and 208 incident liver cancer cases were identified in the SWHS and SMHS, respectively. In multivariable Cox regression models, no statistically significant trends by quintile of GI, GL, or carbohydrate intake were observed. Stratification by chronic liver disease/hepatitis, diabetes, or body mass index (BMI) did not alter the findings. CONCLUSIONS There is little evidence that dietary GI, GL, or carbohydrates affect the incidence of liver cancer in this Asian population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the dose-response relationship between cigarette smoking and pancreatic cancer and to examine the effects of temporal variables. METHODS We analyzed data from 12 case-control studies within the International Pancreatic Cancer Case-Control Consortium (PanC4), including 6507 pancreatic cases and 12 890 controls. We estimated summary odds ratios (ORs) by pooling study-specific ORs using random-effects models. RESULTS Compared with never smokers, the OR was 1.2 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.0-1.3) for former smokers and 2.2 (95% CI 1.7-2.8) for current cigarette smokers, with a significant increasing trend in risk with increasing number of cigarettes among current smokers (OR=3.4 for ≥35 cigarettes per day, P for trend<0.0001). Risk increased in relation to duration of cigarette smoking up to 40 years of smoking (OR=2.4). No trend in risk was observed for age at starting cigarette smoking, whereas risk decreased with increasing time since cigarette cessation, the OR being 0.98 after 20 years. CONCLUSIONS This uniquely large pooled analysis confirms that current cigarette smoking is associated with a twofold increased risk of pancreatic cancer and that the risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked and duration of smoking. Risk of pancreatic cancer reaches the level of never smokers ∼20 years after quitting.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency has been consistently associated with obesity. However, it is unclear whether vitamin D deficiency is the cause or consequence of obesity. We investigated this question by evaluating the association between genetic variants in vitamin D metabolism pathway genes and obesity-related traits. Using directly genotyped and imputed data from a genome-wide association study of 6922 women aged 25-70 years, we examined the association of 198 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in vitamin D pathway genes (CYP27A1, CYP27B1, CYP24A1, CYP2R1, group-specific component (GC) and vitamin D nuclear receptor (VDR)) with body mass index (BMI) and body weight. Per allele beta (β) estimates were calculated for this association using linear regression models, controlling for age, square of age, menopausal status and sample sets. Overall, only two SNPs (rs2248359 in CYP24A1 and rs10832313 in CYP2R1) had a nominally significant association with BMI and weight (P<0.05 for all), with no variation observed by menopausal status, physical activity or dietary energy intake. None of the SNPs examined in the VDR gene were associated with BMI or weight. Our findings suggest that common genetic variants in vitamin D pathway genes do not have a major role in obesity among Chinese women. This comprehensive evaluation of genetic polymorphisms in vitamin D metabolism-related genes and obesity-related traits did not provide strong evidence to support low vitamin D levels as a cause of obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The evidence for a role of tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, and body mass index (BMI) in the etiology of small intestine cancer is based mainly on case-control studies from Europe and United States. SUBJECTS AND METHODS We harmonized the data across 12 cohort studies from mainland China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan, comprising over 500,000 subjects followed for an average of 10.6 years. We calculated hazard ratios (HRs) for BMI and (only among men) tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking. RESULTS A total of 134 incident cases were observed (49 adenocarcinoma, 11 carcinoid, 46 other histologic types, and 28 of unknown histology). There was a statistically non-significant trend toward increased HR in subjects with high BMI [HR for BMI>27.5 kg/m2, compared with 22.6-25.0, 1.50; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.76-2.96]. No association was suggested for tobacco smoking; men drinking>400 g of ethanol per week had an HR of 1.57 (95% CI 0.66-3.70), compared with abstainers. CONCLUSIONS Our study supports the hypothesis that elevated BMI may be a risk factor for small intestine cancer. An etiologic role of alcohol drinking was suggested. Our results reinforce the existing evidence that the epidemiology of small intestine cancer resembles that of colorectal cancer.

Abstract
Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a trichothecene mycotoxin found on wheat, maize and barley. In ecological surveys in China, DON and other trichothecenes have been implicated in acute poisoning episodes and linked with the incidence of esophageal cancer. In order to better understand exposure patterns, this pilot survey provided a combined measure of urinary un-metabolised or free DON (fD) and its glucuronide metabolite (DG) in a subset of 60 samples taken from the Shanghai Women's Health Study cohort, China. Samples were collected in 1997/1998 from women age 40-70 years. Urinary fD+DG combined was detected in 58/60 (96.7%) samples (mean 5.9 ng DON/mg creatinine; range nd-30.5); a similar frequency, and a mean level approximately half, of that previously observed for women in the UK. Wheat consumption was approximately 25% of that consumed by western diets; thus DON contamination of wheat may be higher in Shanghai than the UK. The de-epoxy metabolite of DON, a detoxification product observed in animals, was not detected, suggesting that humans may be particularly sensitive to DON due to a more restricted detoxification capacity.

Abstract
The Shanghai cancer registry, established in 1963, is the oldest one in mainland China; cancer registration is entirely done by passive methods. The registry contributed data on 52 cancer sites or types registered during 1992-1995 for this survival study. The methods of follow-up have been a mixture of both active and passive ones, with median follow-up ranging 3-81 months. The proportion with histologically verified diagnosis for various cancers ranged from 14-95%; death certificates only (DCOs) ranged from 0-2% and 98-100% of total registered cases were included for survival analysis. The top ranking cancers on 5-year age-standardized relative survival (%) were thyroid (90%), non-melanoma skin (86%), penis (84%), corpus uteri (82%) and testis (80%). The corresponding survival rates for common cancers were lung (16%), stomach (30%), liver (9%), breast (78%) and colon (48%). The 5-year relative survival by age group reveals an inverse relationship for most cancers. An increasing trend in the 5-year absolute andrelative survival was noted for all cancers registered in 1992-1995 compared to 1988-1991.

Abstract
Though obesity is an established risk factor for gall bladder cancer, its role in cancers of the extrahepatic bile ducts and ampulla of Vater is less clear, as also is the role of abdominal obesity. In a population-based case–control study of biliary tract cancer in Shanghai, China, odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for biliary tract cancer in relation to anthropometric measures, including body mass index (BMI) at various ages and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), adjusting for age, sex, and education. The study included 627 patients with biliary tract cancer (368 gall bladder, 191 bile duct, 68 ampulla of Vater) and 959 healthy subjects randomly selected from the population. A higher BMI at all ages, including early adulthood (ages 20–29 years), and a greater WHR were associated with an increased risk of gall bladder cancer. A high usual adult BMI (⩾25) was associated with a 1.6-fold risk of gall bladder cancer (95% CI 1.2–2.1, P for trend <0.001). Among subjects without gallstones, BMI was also positively associated with gall bladder cancer risk. Regardless of BMI levels, increasing WHR was associated with an excess risk of gall bladder cancer risk, with those having a high BMI (⩾25) and a high WHR (>0.90) having the highest risk of gall bladder cancer (OR=12.6, 95% CI 4.8–33.2), relative to those with a low BMI and WHR. We found no clear risk patterns for cancers of the bile duct and ampulla of Vater. These results suggest that both overall and abdominal obesity, including obesity in early adulthood, are associated with an increased risk of gall bladder cancer. The increasing prevalence of obesity and cholesterol stones in Shanghai seems at least partly responsible for the rising incidence of gall bladder cancer in Shanghai.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with prehypertension, a new blood pressure category defined as systolic blood pressure of 120-139 mm Hg and/or diastolic blood pressure of 80-89 mm Hg, are at an increased risk for heart diseases and are strongly recommended to practice lifestyle changes, including weight control. Data on impacts of long-term weight change on prehypertension are sparse. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between weight change since age 20 and prehypertension risk. METHODS In this cross-sectional analysis of 36 075 non-hypertensive women aged 40-70 years, information on weight history was collected at enrollment in the Shanghai Women's Health Study; blood pressures were measured 2-3 years later by medical professionals. The odds ratios (ORs) of prehypertension were calculated for women who gained or lost weight since age 20 compared with those with stable weight (gain or loss <5 kg), adjusting for age, lifestyle factors, sodium intake and body mass index at age 20. RESULTS A total of 47% of the study participants (n=16 981) had prehypertension. For a 6- to 10-kg gain, the OR (95% CI) was 1.36 (1.28-1.45); for 11- to 15-kg gain, 1.64 (1.54-1.75); for 16- to 20-kg gain, 2.32 (2.14-2.51); for 21- to 25-kg gain, 2.91 (2.60-3.26); and for a gain >25 kg; 3.65 (3.13-4.26). While for a 6- to 10-kg loss and a loss >10 kg, the respective ORs were 0.76 (0.67-0.87) and 0.47 (0.38-0.59). The increase in prehypertension risk associated with each 1-kg gain was similar to that associated with a 1-year increase in age. Although weight gain during early adulthood appeared to have a more pronounced effect on the risk of prehypertension, weight gain later in life also contributed significantly to an elevated risk. CONCLUSION Weight gain since age 20 substantially increases risk for prehypertension in non-hypertensive individuals, while weight loss significantly lowers the risk, emphasizing the importance of weight control throughout adulthood in preventing hypertension.

Abstract
In a population-based case–control study of 832 incident endometrial cancer cases and 846 frequency-matched controls among Chinese women in Shanghai, using a validated food-frequency questionnaire, dietary habits were estimated by in-person interviews. Total vegetable consumption was inversely associated with endometrial cancer risk (highest quartile vs lowest: OR=0.69, 95% CI 0.50–0.96). The risk was reduced with increasing intake of dark green/dark yellow vegetables (trend test, P=0.02), fresh legumes (trend test, P<0.01), and allium vegetables (trend test, P=0.04). Fruit consumption was unrelated to risk. These results suggest that high consumption of certain vegetables may reduce the risk of endometrial cancer.

Abstract
A study of bovine endothelial nitric oxide synthase by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in the 1000-2500 cm(-)(1) range is reported. Binding of CO to the reduced enzyme gives two heme(II)-CO nu(C)(-)(O) stretches (1927 and 1904 cm(-)(1)) which appear to be in rapid equilibrium. Photolysis of this heme(II)-CO compound is accompanied by perturbation of the local fine structure around the catalytic site giving vibrational changes of protein backbone, substrate, amino acid residues, and cofactors, to which heme, substrate arginine, and catalytic site residues contribute. Possible assignments of vibrations to heme, substrate arginine, and catalytic site residues are discussed. The discussion of assignments is informed by known structures, absorbance frequencies, and extinction coefficients of residues and cofactors, analysis of H(2)O-D(2)O exchange effects, analysis of substrate (14)N-(15)N (guanidinium)-arginine exchange effects, and comparison with the nNOS isoform (which differs in the replacement of asparagine 368 with an aspartate within the substrate binding site). The FTIR data can be modeled on the known structure of the catalytic site and indicate the extent of modulation of vibrational modes upon photolysis of the CO compound.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the association between soyfood intake and risk of glycosuria. DESIGN AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among participants of the Shanghai Women's Health Study, a population-based cohort study of women aged 40-70 y. Information on usual intake of soyfoods was obtained at baseline survey through an in-person interview using a validated food-frequency questionnaire. Included in this study were 39,385 cohort members screened for diabetes at the baseline survey and free of previously diagnosed diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, kidney diseases, and cancer. There were 323 women who tested positive for urine glucose. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were employed to measure the association between soyfood intake and glycosuria using unconditional logistic regression. SETTING Urban communities of Shanghai, China. RESULTS Overall, soyfood intake was not related to the risk of glycosuria. Among postmenopausal women, however, intake of tofu and other soy products was inversely associated with risk of glycosuria after adjustment for potential confounders. The ORs across quintiles of intake were 1.0, 0.75 (95% CI=0.47-1.20), 0.79 (95% CI=0.51-1.25), 0.53 (95% CI=0.32-0.88), and 0.51 (95% CI=0.26-0.98; P for trend=0.05). Further analyses showed that the inverse association was primarily confined to postmenopausal women with a body mass index (BMI) of <25 kg/m2. The adjusted OR comparing the extreme quintiles was 0.36 (95% CI=0.13-0.97; P for trend=0.004). CONCLUSIONS Soyfoods may play a role in the development of glycosuria, an important indicator of diabetes, among postmenopausal women with a low BMI.

Abstract
Alcohol and tobacco consumption are closely correlated and published results on their association with breast cancer have not always allowed adequately for confounding between these exposures. Over 80% of the relevant information worldwide on alcohol and tobacco consumption and breast cancer were collated, checked and analysed centrally. Analyses included 58,515 women with invasive breast cancer and 95,067 controls from 53 studies. Relative risks of breast cancer were estimated, after stratifying by study, age, parity and, where appropriate, women's age when their first child was born and consumption of alcohol and tobacco. The average consumption of alcohol reported by controls from developed countries was 6.0 g per day, i.e. about half a unit/drink of alcohol per day, and was greater in ever-smokers than never-smokers, (8.4 g per day and 5.0 g per day, respectively). Compared with women who reported drinking no alcohol, the relative risk of breast cancer was 1.32 (1.19-1.45, P<0.00001) for an intake of 35-44 g per day alcohol, and 1.46 (1.33-1.61, P<0.00001) for >/=45 g per day alcohol. The relative risk of breast cancer increased by 7.1% (95% CI 5.5-8.7%; P<0.00001) for each additional 10 g per day intake of alcohol, i.e. for each extra unit or drink of alcohol consumed on a daily basis. This increase was the same in ever-smokers and never-smokers (7.1% per 10 g per day, P<0.00001, in each group). By contrast, the relationship between smoking and breast cancer was substantially confounded by the effect of alcohol. When analyses were restricted to 22 255 women with breast cancer and 40 832 controls who reported drinking no alcohol, smoking was not associated with breast cancer (compared to never-smokers, relative risk for ever-smokers=1.03, 95% CI 0.98-1.07, and for current smokers=0.99, 0.92-1.05). The results for alcohol and for tobacco did not vary substantially across studies, study designs, or according to 15 personal characteristics of the women; nor were the findings materially confounded by any of these factors. If the observed relationship for alcohol is causal, these results suggest that about 4% of the breast cancers in developed countries are attributable to alcohol. In developing countries, where alcohol consumption among controls averaged only 0.4 g per day, alcohol would have a negligible effect on the incidence of breast cancer. In conclusion, smoking has little or no independent effect on the risk of developing breast cancer; the effect of alcohol on breast cancer needs to be interpreted in the context of its beneficial effects, in moderation, on cardiovascular disease and its harmful effects on cirrhosis and cancers of the mouth, larynx, oesophagus and liver.
