Abstract
Getah virus (GETV) is a mosquito-transmitted disease that affects animals, causing fever, aseptic meningitis, and abortion. Its prevalence in China poses risks to both animal health and public well-being. Currently, there is a scarcity of seroepidemiological data on GETV due to the absence of commercial antibody detection kits for pigs. The aim of this study is to develop a rapid, accurate, and sensitive ELISA, providing a reliable tool for GETV seroepidemiology and laying the foundation for future commercial assay development. In this study, we removed specific hydrophobic domains and intracellular structures from E2 proteins and constructed the recombinant plasmid pCold-TF-E2. The recombinant protein was expressed using a prokaryotic expression system, and efficient purification of the rE2 protein was achieved using a nickel affinity column. The purified rE2 protein is suitable for the development of an indirect ELISA (rE2 ELISA). Following the optimization of reaction conditions for the rE2-ELISA, the cut-off value was 0.356. Additionally, the rE2-ELISA method showed a positive rate of 37.1% for IgG antibodies against GETV when testing 986 pig clinical serum samples collected from pigs in Sichuan between May 2022 and September 2022. The rE2-ELISA method displayed a 95.1% overall agreement with VNT, boasting a sensitivity of 98.2% and a specificity of 92.6%. These results indicate that IgG ELISA based on rE2 protein is an efficient and economical method for the detection of GETV antibodies in pigs, facilitating the diagnosis and prevention of GETV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transanal endoscopic intersphincteric resection (ISR) surgery currently lacks sufficient clinical research and reporting. AIM To investigate the clinical effectiveness of transanal endoscopic ISR, in order to promote the clinical application and development of this technique. METHODS This study utilized a retrospective case series design. Clinical and pathological data of patients with lower rectal cancer who underwent transanal endoscopic ISR at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University between May 2018 and May 2023 were included. All patients underwent transanal endoscopic ISR as the surgical approach. We conducted this study to determine the perioperative recovery status, postoperative complications, and pathological specimen characteristics of this group of patients. RESULTS This study included 45 eligible patients, with no perioperative mortalities. The overall incidence of early complications was 22.22%, with a rate of 4.44% for Clavien-Dindo grade ≥ III events. Two patients (4.4%) developed anastomotic leakage after surgery, including one case of grade A and one case of grade B. Postoperative pathological examination confirmed negative circumferential resection margins and distal resection margins in all patients. The mean distance between the tumor lower margin and distal resection margin was found to be 2.30 ± 0.62 cm. The transanal endoscopic ISR procedure consistently yielded high quality pathological specimens. CONCLUSION Transanal endoscopic ISR is safe, feasible, and provides a clear anatomical view. It is associated with a low incidence of postoperative complications and favorable pathological outcomes, making it worth further research and application.

Abstract
Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is an emerging discovered coronavirus that causes significant losses in the global swine industry. This study aimed to establish an indirect ELISA method for detecting PDCoV antibodies using the truncated gene of PDCoV spike protein (S). The purified S protein was used as the coating antigen for the polyclonal antibody. The conditions were optimized to establish an indirect ELISA detection method for PDCoV based on the S protein, which showed good specificity and no cross-reaction with SVV-VP1, ASFV-P72, GETV-E2, PRV-gE, etc. The method has high repeatability, with coefficients of variation within and between batches less than 10%. Compared with the commercial kit, the positive coincidence rate is 86.40%, the negative coincidence rate is 89.43%, and the total coincidence rate is 91.76%. This ELISA can be used for PDCoV serological investigation and antibody evaluation. It can also lay the foundation for further research and development of PDCoV S protein ELISA antibody detection kit.

Abstract
Porcine circovirus type 4 (PCV4) is an emerging circovirus, which has been detected in domestic pigs across various provinces in China and Korea. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether cats are susceptible to PCV4. For this purpose, we collected 116 cat samples from animal hospitals in Sichuan Province, China, between 2021 and 2022. Using a SYBR Green-based real-time PCR assay, we detected PCV4 in 5 out of the 116 clinical samples, indicating a positive rate of 4.31% (5/116) and confirming the presence of PCV4 in cats from Sichuan Province, China. Moreover, we successfully sequenced and analyzed the complete genome of one PCV4 strain (SCGA-Cat) along with 60 reference sequences deposited in the GenBank database. SCGA-Cat exhibited high nucleotide homology (98.2-99.0%) with PCV4 strains from other species, including dogs, pigs, dairy cows, and fur animals. Notably, the SCGA-Cat strain from cats clustered closely with a PCV4 strain derived from a pig collected in Fujian Province, China. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first report on the molecular detection of PCV4 in cats worldwide, which prompted us to understand the genetic diversity and cross-species transmission of the ongoing PCV4 cases. However, further investigations are needed to explore the association between PCV4 infection and clinical syndromes in cats.

Abstract
Introduction: Porcine circovirus 4 (PCV4) was discovered in 2019 and then proved to be pathogenic to piglets. Nevertheless, few studies were currently available about PCV4 infection in species other than pigs and there is no information about the prevalence of PCV4 in dogs. Methods: To fill this gap, 264 dog samples were collected from animal hospitals in the Southwest of China from 2021 to 2022 and screened for PCV4. Moreover, the complete genome of one PCV4 strain (SCABTC-Dog2022) were obtained successfully and shared a high identity (97.9-99.0%) with other PCV4 strains derived from pigs, dairy cows, raccoon dogs and foxes. The SCABTC-Dog2022 were analyzed together with 51 reference sequences. Results and Discussion: The detected results showed a low percentage of PCV-4 DNA (1.14%, 3/264), indicating that PCV4 could be identified in dogs in southwest China. Phylogenetic tree showed that SCABTC-Dog2022 strain derived from dog were clustered in a closed relative and geographically coherent branch with other PCV4 strains collected from four provinces (Sichuan, Fujian, Hunan and Inner Mongolia) of China. To our knowledge, it is the first detection of PCV4 in dogs globally. The association between PCV4 status and clinical syndromes in dogs deserves additional investigations.

Abstract
Porcine circovirus 4 (PCV4) was identified in 2019 as a novel circovirus species and then proved to be pathogenic to piglets. However, there is a lack of its prevalence in the Southwest of China. To investigate whether PCV4 DNA existed in the Southwest of China, 374 samples were collected from diseased pigs during 2021–2022 and detected by a real-time PCR assay. The results showed that the positive rate of PCV4 was 1.34% (5/374) at sample level, and PCV4 was detected in two of 12 cities, demonstrating that PCV4 could be detected in pig farms in the Southwest of China, but its prevalence was low. Furthermore, one PCV4 strain (SC-GA2022ABTC) was sequenced in this study and shared a high identity (98.1–99.7%) with reference strains at the genome level. Combining genetic evolution analysis with amino acid sequence analysis, three genotypes PCV4a, PCV4b, and PCV4c were temporarily identified, and the SC-GA2022ABTC strain belonged to PCV4c with a specific amino acid pattern (239V for Rep protein, 27N, 28R, and 212M for Cap protein). Phylogenetic tree and amino acid alignment showed that PCV4 had an ancient ancestor with mink circovirus. In conclusion, the present study was the first to report the discovery and the evolutionary analysis of the PCV4 genome in pig herds of the Southwest of China and provide insight into the molecular epidemiology of PCV4.

Abstract
Due to its ultra-high sensitivity, specificity and throughput, liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has become an important analytical tool in clinical laboratories in quantifying various small molecules, such as vitamins, bile acids, steroids and other internal metabolites relevant to maternal diseases. As an effective means of screening and diagnosing diseases in preventive medicine, LC-MS/MS has been widely used in maternal and child health, contributing to the reduction of the incidence of maternal and child diseases and premature morbidity and mortality. At present, LC-MS/MS is an emerging and powerful platform in laboratory testing in China, facing both challenges and opportunities. In this article, the representative applications in the field of maternal and child health are summarized and discussed, along with the major hurdles of LC-MS/MS in clinical recognition and implementation.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the clinical epidemiological characteristics including composition of pathogens , clinical characteristics, and disease prognosis acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) in Chinese children. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical and laboratory data of 1 610 children <15 years of age with ABM in 33 tertiary hospitals in China from January 2019 to December 2020. Patients were divided into different groups according to age,<28 days group, 28 days to <3 months group, 3 months to <1 year group, 1-<5 years of age group, 5-<15 years of age group; etiology confirmed group and clinically diagnosed group according to etiology diagnosis. Non-numeric variables were analyzed with the Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test, while non-normal distrituction numeric variables were compared with nonparametric test. Results: Among 1 610 children with ABM, 955 were male and 650 were female (5 cases were not provided with gender information), and the age of onset was 1.5 (0.5, 5.5) months. There were 588 cases age from <28 days, 462 cases age from 28 days to <3 months, 302 cases age from 3 months to <1 year of age group, 156 cases in the 1-<5 years of age and 101 cases in the 5-<15 years of age. The detection rates were 38.8% (95/245) and 31.5% (70/222) of Escherichia coli and 27.8% (68/245) and 35.1% (78/222) of Streptococcus agalactiae in infants younger than 28 days of age and 28 days to 3 months of age; the detection rates of Streptococcus pneumonia, Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus agalactiae were 34.3% (61/178), 14.0% (25/178) and 13.5% (24/178) in the 3 months of age to <1 year of age group; the dominant pathogens were Streptococcus pneumoniae and the detection rate were 67.9% (74/109) and 44.4% (16/36) in the 1-<5 years of age and 5-<15 years of age . There were 9.7% (19/195) strains of Escherichia coli producing ultra-broad-spectrum β-lactamases. The positive rates of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture and blood culture were 32.2% (515/1 598) and 25.0% (400/1 598), while 38.2% (126/330)and 25.3% (21/83) in CSF metagenomics next generation sequencing and Streptococcus pneumoniae antigen detection. There were 4.3% (32/790) cases of which CSF white blood cell counts were normal in etiology confirmed group. Among 1 610 children with ABM, main intracranial imaging complications were subdural effusion and (or) empyema in 349 cases (21.7%), hydrocephalus in 233 cases (14.5%), brain abscess in 178 cases (11.1%), and other cerebrovascular diseases, including encephalomalacia, cerebral infarction, and encephalatrophy, in 174 cases (10.8%). Among the 166 cases (10.3%) with unfavorable outcome, 32 cases (2.0%) died among whom 24 cases died before 1 year of age, and 37 cases (2.3%) had recurrence among whom 25 cases had recurrence within 3 weeks. The incidences of subdural effusion and (or) empyema, brain abscess and ependymitis in the etiology confirmed group were significantly higher than those in the clinically diagnosed group (26.2% (207/790) vs. 17.3% (142/820), 13.0% (103/790) vs. 9.1% (75/820), 4.6% (36/790) vs. 2.7% (22/820), χ2=18.71, 6.20, 4.07, all P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in the unfavorable outcomes, mortility, and recurrence between these 2 groups (all P>0.05). Conclusions: The onset age of ABM in children is usually within 1 year of age, especially <3 months. The common pathogens in infants <3 months of age are Escherichia coli and Streptococcus agalactiae, and the dominant pathogen in infant ≥3 months is Streptococcus pneumoniae. Subdural effusion and (or) empyema and hydrocephalus are common complications. ABM should not be excluded even if CSF white blood cell counts is within normal range. Standardized bacteriological examination should be paid more attention to increase the pathogenic detection rate. Non-culture CSF detection methods may facilitate the pathogenic diagnosis.

Abstract
Seneca Valley virus (SVV), a non-enveloped positive single-stranded virus can cause vesicular disease in swine. However, the mechanisms by which SVV activates an innate immune response remain unknown. Mitofusin-2 (MFN2), a mitochondria-shaping protein regulating mitochondrial fusion and fission, plays a crucial role in innate immune responses. But, the roles of Mfn2 in SVV infection have not been elucidated. Here, we show that SVV inhibited Mfn2 expression and NLRP3 inflammasome, activating RIG-I/IRF7 signaling pathway to increase IFN-λ3 expression. Overexpression of Mfn2 inhibited RIG-I/IRF7 signaling pathway, thus decreasing IFN-λ3 expression and promoting SVV replication. Interestingly, overexpression of Mfn2 also activated NLRP3 inflammasome but did not inhibit SVV proliferation. That may mean the RIG-I/IRF7 signaling pathway plays a more important role in SVV proliferation in PK-15 cells. This study could provide important insights into the modulation of host metabolism during SVV infection and provide a strong theoretical basis for a better understanding of the pathogenic mechanism and immune activation mechanism of SVV.

Abstract
Background The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) has been proposed as a marker of malnutrition and associated with the prognosis of cardiovascular disease. However, whether PNI can serve as a potential biomarker for the prognosis of heart failure (HF) upon those established risk factors were still controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to generate comprehensive evidence on the prognostic value of PNI in patients with HF. Methods Multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar) were searched for related studies up to January 31, 2022. Observational studies accessed associations between PNI levels and the prognosis in patients with HF were included for meta-analysis. The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Results Fourteen studies, comprising 19,605 patients with HF were included for meta-analysis. The median follow-up duration was 18.5 months. Compared with those with higher PNI (normal nutritional status), patients with HF with lower PNI (malnourished) were associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality (HR 1.53, 95% CI 1.27–1.85) and composite major adverse cardiac outcomes (MACEs; HR 2.26, 95% CI 1.54–3.31) in the multivariable-adjusted model. Furthermore, when PNI was defined as per 1 increment as a continuous metric, higher PNI was associated with a decrease in all-cause mortality (per 1 increment of PNI: HR 0.94, 95% CI 0.88–0.96) and MACEs (per 1 increment of PNI: HR 0.97, 95% CI 0.95–0.98). Conclusions The PNI can serve as an easily calculated bedside “malnutrition-inflammation” biomarker in HF. Lower PNI was associated with a worse prognosis in patients with HF.

Abstract
Based on a variant strain, we constructed a gE/gI/TK-deleted pseudorabies virus (PRV). A total of 18 female mice were randomized to a vaccination group to receive PRV XJ delgE/gI/TK, a vehicle group to receive Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium, and a mock group to confirm the protection of PRV delgE/gI/TK on the central nervous system in mice. Subsequently, the vaccination and vehicle groups were infected with PRV XJ. The mice in the vehicle group showed more severe neurological symptoms and higher viral loads than those in the vaccination group. The exudation of Evans blue and the expression of tight junction protein showed no difference in all groups. HE staining showed vacuolar neuronal degeneration in the vehicle group brain, but no tissue lesions were observed in the vaccination group. TNF-α, IL-6, and synuclein were upregulated in the brain of mice in the vehicle group, while those were inhibited among mice in the vaccination group. IFN-β, IFN-γ, ISG15, Mx1, and OAS1 showed no difference in the brain between the vaccination and vehicle groups. In addition, TNF-α and IL-6 were inhibited, and antiviral factors were increased in the intestine of the mice in the vaccination group compared to those in the vehicle group. Our study showed that PRV XJ delgE/gI/TK inhibited neurological damage and the inflammation of the intestine and brain induced by PRV and activated the innate immunity of the intestine.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of a new cervical artificial disc prosthesis in the treatment of cervical degenerative diseases. Methods: The clinical data of 18 patients with single-level cervical degenerative diseases who underwent three dimensional printed anatomical bionic cervical disc replacement at Department of Spinal Surgery,Honghui Hospital,Xi'an Jiaotong University from May 2019 to July 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. There were 7 males and 11 females,aged (45±8) years old(range:28 to 58 years).The surgical segment was located at C3-4 level in 2 cases, C4-5 level in 5 cases, C5-6 level in 9 cases, and C6-7 level in 2 cases.The clinical and radiographic outcomes were recorded and compared at preoperative,postoperative times of one month and twelve months.The clinical assessments contained Japanese orthopedic association (JOA) score,neck disability index (NDI) and visual analogue scale (VAS).Imaging assessments included range of motion (ROM) of cervical spine, prosthesis subsidence and prosthesis anteroposterior migration.Repeated measurement variance analysis was used for comparison between groups,and paired t test was used for pairwise comparison. Results: All patients underwent the operation successfully and were followed up for more than 12 months.Compared with preoperative score,the JOA score,NDI and VAS were significantly improved after surgery (all P<0.01).There was no significant difference in postoperative ROM compared with 1-and 12-month preoperative ROM (t=1.570,P=0.135;t=1.744,P=0.099). The prosthesis subsidence was (0.29±0.13) mm (range: 0.18 to 0.50 mm) at 12-month postoperatively.The migration of prosthesis at 12-months postoperatively were (0.71±0.20) mm (range: 0.44 to 1.08 mm).There was no prosthesis subsidence or migration>2 mm at 12-month postoperatively. Conclusion: Three dimensional printed anatomical biomimetic cervical artificial disc replacement has a good early clinical effect in the treatment of cervical degenerative diseases, good mobility can be obtained while maintaining stability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lupus B cells not only produce autoantibodies against nuclear antigens but also provide co-stimulation to T cells. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding of the mechanism underlying lupus B cell hyperactivation. METHODS This study focuses on the detection of B cell activation status, analysis of early BCR signaling response, DNA sequencing, and quantity determination of BCR signaling regulators in murine lupus models. RESULTS Our result showed that there is a B cell hyperactivation with a significant elevation of B cell activation markers, and a BCR signaling hyperactivity with an abnormal increase of phosphorylated BCR signaling molecules and cytoplasmic calcium in the early response to BCR crosslinking in B6.Sle1/2/3 lupus mouse. Whole exome sequencing identified a multiple point mutation in the exon of many BCR signaling regulators in common murine lupus models, MRL/lpr, NZM2410, BXSB, NZB, and NZW strains. cNDA sequencing confirmed FcγR2b, Ly9, Pirb, Siglecg, and CD22 BCR signaling regulator variants in B6.Sle1/2/3 lupus mouse, but surface protein expression of these regulators on B cells showed an abnormal increase. CONCLUSION Our findings support that these BCR signaling regulator variants are potential causative genes of B cell hyperactivation in murine lupus models through their possible functional reduction.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase inhibitor ouabain on the proliferation and division of liver cancer HepG2 cells, and to explore the anticancer mechanism. Methods: HepG2 cells were exposed with different concentrations of ouabain (0.1, 1, 10 μmol/L) for 24 h, the proliferation ability was appraised using CCK-8, and the HepG2 cells was as a control group. The status of chromosome separation was detected with cell immunofluorescence (ICC) coupled to confocal microscope. The expression levels of AURKA, mTOR, p-mTOR, ERK and p-ERK protein were analyzed using western blot. Results: After treating with 0.1, 1 and 10 μmol/L of ouabain for 24 h, the inhibitory rate of cells were (23.5±4.57)%, (49.80±5.32)%, and (72.10±5.62)%, respectively. Ouabain could significantly inhibit the proliferation of HepG2, and presented in a dose-dependent manner(F=32.8, P<0.05). The ICC results showed that the chromosome separation disorders occurred in HepG2 cells treated with 1 μmol/L for 24 h, and the spindle diameter of HepG2 cells with ouabain treatment was decreased significantly compared with the control group(t=9.58, P<0.05). The results of western blot showed that the expression levels of AURKA, p-mTOR and p-ERK expressions in HepG2 cells treated with 1 μmol/L of ouabain were significantly decreased compared with the control group(F=16.26, 8.32, 33.59, P<0.05). Ouabain inhibited the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma cells in nude mice(F=370.20, P<0.05). Conclusion: Ouabain can induce chromosome division disorder and inhibit the proliferation in liver cancer HepG2 cells by inhibiting AURKA signaling pathway.

Abstract
Neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) is a type of bead-like, fibrous and reticular substances that is actively released by activated inflammatory neutrophils during the stage of infections or inflammatory responses. NET, which is composed of chromatin DNA and multiple intracellular protein components, may wrap pathogens to limit their diffusions. Meanwhile, NET may kill pathogens via a wide range of antibacterial proteins, which is considered as the third antibacterial mechanism of neutrophils, in addition to phagocytosis and degranulation. Recent studies have shown the involvement of NET in the immune response against parasitic infections. This review summarizes the advances of NETs in the immune responses against parasitic infections, so as to provide insights into the elucidation of the pathogenesis and development of therapeutics of parasitic diseases.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical application of additional surgery after non-curative endoscopic resection for early colorectal cancer. Methods: A retrospectively descriptive cohort study was conducted. Inclusion criteria: (1) pathologically confirmed primary colorectal adenocarcinoma;(2) receiving additional surgery after endoscopic resection; (3) semi-elective operation. Exclusion criteria: familial adenomatous polyposis, appendiceal neoplasms, anal canal neoplasms, neuroendocrine tumors, and surgery because of perforation or bleeding after endoscopic resection. Indications of additional surgery: (1) pathologically positive lateral or basal resection margin; (2) submucosal invasion depth ≥ 1000 μm; (3) lymphovascular invasion; (4) poorly differentiated, undifferentiated or mucinous adenocarcinoma; (5) more than grade G2 in tumor budding; (6) incomplete resection or piecemeal specimen with margin impossible to evaluate; (7) patient's consent due to undetermined pathology. According to the above criteria, clinical data of 92 patients at the Colorectal Surgery Department, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University between January 2013 and December 2018 were collected. Demographic data, pathological examinations, operative methods and outcomes were analyzed. Results: There were 61 (66.3%) male and 31 female (33.7%) patients with an average age of (58.2±10.7) years. The average BMI was (23.8±3.5) kg/m(2). The lesions located in the right-sided colon, left-sided colon and rectum in 19, 37 and 36 patients respectively. Sixteen patients received endoscopic snare resection, 45 received endoscopic mucosal resection and 31 received endoscopic submucosal dissection. Reasons for additional surgery included endoscopic specimen with pathologically positive margin (n=22, 23.9%), submucosal invasion depth ≥ 1000 μm (n=9, 9.8%), lymphovascular invasion (n=4, 4.3%), poorly differentiated, undifferentiated or mucinous adenocarcinoma (n=5, 5.4%), piecemeal resection (n=13, 14.1%), undetermined pathology (n=52, 56.5%). The median duration from endoscopic resection to additional surgery was 16 days. Thirty-four patients (37.0%) received preoperative endoscopic localization with carbon nanoparticles suspension injection and 5 (5.4%) were marked with titanium clip. Seventy-four patients (80.4%) received laparoscopic surgery, 17 (18.5%) received open surgery, while 1 patient (1.1%) was converted to open surgery due to missing titanium clip. Three patients (3.3%) were treated with transanal excision, 2 (2.2%) with bowel resection, and 87 (94.6%) with radical excision. After additional surgery, histopathological examination of surgical specimens revealed the presence of residual tumor in 5 patients (5.4%), lymph node metastasis in 8 (8.7%), lymphovascular invasion in 1 (1.1%) and tumor deposit in 1 (1.1%). Twelve patients (13.0%) developed postoperative complications, including 4 mid-low rectal cancer patients (4.3%) with anastomostic leakage or bleeding. After surgery, according to the TNM staging system, 83 patients (90.2%) were classified as TNM stage 0-I, 9 (9.8%) as TNM stage II-IV. One patient of stage IV with liver metastasis underwent concomitant hepatectomy. One patient of stage II received regular follow-up after operation. Seven cases of stage III and 1 of stage IV received postoperative chemotherapy. Eighty-five patients (92.4%) were followed up with a median time of 12.8 (IQR: 8.1, 24.3) months. No recurrence or metastasis was observed. Conclusions: Surgery is an effective salvage measure for non-curative endoscopic resection of early colorectal cancer. Since surgery may have complications, indications of the additional surgery should be considered carefully. Preoperative endoscopic localization should be performed in order to ensure the safety and efficacy of surgery.

Abstract
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) known as an important antioxidative stress protein has been recently found in venoms of several parasitoid wasps. However, its functions and characteristics as a virulent factor remain scarcely described. Here, we report the characterization of two venomous SOD genes (SguaSOD1 and SguaSOD3) from the ectoparasitoid, Scleroderma guani. The metal binding sites, cysteine amino acid positions and signature sequences of the SOD family were conserved within SguaSOD1 and SguaSOD3. Relatively high levels of their transcripts were observed in pupae followed a decrease in early adults, after which they had the highest transcriptions, indicating that their productions would be regulated in venom apparatus. Although the two genes showed lower expression in venom apparatus compared to head and thorax, the enzymatic assay revealed that SOD indeed had activity in venom. Further, we showed that recombinant SguaSOD3 suppressed melanization of host hemolymph, implying that this protein used as a virulent factor uniquely impacts the prophenoloxidase cascade.

Abstract
Venom is a prominently maternal virulent factor utilized by parasitoids to overcome hosts immune defense. With respect to roles of this toxic mixture involved in manipulating hosts immunity, great interest has been mostly restricted to Ichneumonoidea parasitoids associated with polydnavirus (PDV), of which venom is usually considered as a helper component to enhance the role of PDV, and limited Chalcidoidea species. In contrast, little information is available in other parasitoids, especially ectoparasitic species not carrying PDV. The ectoparasitoid Scleroderma guani injects venom into its host, Tenebrio molitor, implying its venom was involved in suppression of hosts immune response for successful parasitism. Thus, we investigated the effects of parasitism and venom of this parasitoid on counteracting the cellular immunity of its host by examining changes of hemocyte counts, and hemocyte spreading and encapsulation ability. Total hemocyte counts were elevated in parasitized and venom-injected pupae. The spreading behavior of both granulocytes and plasmatocytes was impaired by parasitization and venom. High concentration of venom led to more severely increased hemocyte counts and suppression of hemocyte spreading. The ability of hemocyte encapsulation was inhibited by venom in vitro. In addition to immediate effects observed, venom showed persistent interference in hosts cellular immunity. These results indicate that venom alone from S. guani plays a pivotal role in blocking hosts cellular immune response, serving as a regulator that guarantees the successful development of its progenies. The findings provide a foundation for further investigation of the underlying mechanisms in immune inhibitory action of S. guani venom.

Abstract
Despite substantial advances in uncovering constituents of parasitoid venoms due to their potential applications as insecticides and pharmaceuticals, most of these studies are primarily restricted to braconid and ichneumonid wasps. Little information is available regarding virulent factors from venom of Eulophidae. In order to provide insight into the venom components of this family and parasitoid venom evolution, a venom protein repertoire (venomics) of the endoparasitoid wasp, Tetrastichus brontispae was deciphered using a proteomic approach. A large number of diverse venom proteins/peptides were identified, including novel proteins and those proteins commonly found in the venoms of other parasitoids such as serine protease, esterase, dipeptidyl peptidase IV, acid phosphatase, major royal jelly protein, superoxide dismutase, and venom allergen 3/5. Three ion transport peptide-likes (ITPLs) were abundantly detected in T. brontispae venom. Of these, two of them are reported as a novel form for the first time, with the characteristics of lengthened amino acid sequences and additional cysteine residues. These venom ITPLs are obviously apart from other general members within the crustacean hyperglycemic hormone/ion transport peptide (CHH/ITP) family. It implies that they would evolve unique functions essential for parasitism success.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to find effects of Fusarium toxins on brain injury in mice. We evaluated the individual and combined effect of the Fusarium toxins zearalenone and deoxynivalenol on the mouse brain. We examined brain weight, protein, antioxidant indicators, and apoptosis. After 3 and 5days of treatment, increased levels of nitric oxide, total nitric oxide synthase, hydroxyl radical scavenging, and malondialdehyde were observed in the treatment groups. This was accompanied by reduced levels of brain protein, superoxide dismutase (apart from the low-dose zearalenone groups), glutathione, glutathione peroxidase activity, and percentage of apoptotic cells. By day 12, most of these indicators had returned to control group levels. The effects of zearalenone and deoxynivalenol were dose-dependent, and were synergistic in combination. Our results suggest that brain function is affected by zearalenone and deoxynivalenol.

Abstract
Four adult Simmental male cattle (376 ± 9.0 kg initial BW), fitted with permanent rumen cannulas, were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design to investigate the effects of dietary supplementing tannic acid (TA) on rumen fermentation, methane (CH4 ) production, rumen microbes, nutrient digestibility and plasma biochemical parameters. Four levels of TA, that is 0, 6.5, 13.0 or 26.0 g/kg dry matter (DM), were added to the basal ration (composed of corn silage and concentrate mixture) as experimental treatments respectively. Each experimental period consisted of a 12-day adaptation phase followed by a 3-day sampling phase. The results showed that supplementing TA at 26.0 g/kg DM decreased the relative abundance of protozoa, methanogens and Ruminococcus albus to the total ruminal bacterial 16S rDNA in beef cattle (p < 0.05). The results also showed that supplementing TA at 6.5, 13.0 or 26.0 g/kg DM decreased (p < 0.01) the CH4 production (l/kg DM intake) by 11.1%, 14.7% and 33.6% respectively. Supplementing TA at 13.0 or 26.0 g/kg DM decreased the ratio of acetate to propionate and ammonia nitrogen (NH3 -N) (p < 0.05) and tended to decrease the total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration of rumen fluid (p = 0.07). Supplementing TA at 26.0 g/kg DM decreased DM and organic matter (OM) digestibility (p < 0.05), supplementing TA at 6.5, 13.0 or 26.0 g/kg DM decreased (p < 0.01) crude protein (CP) digestibility by 5.0%, 8.6% and 15.7%, respectively, and supplementing TA at 6.5, 13.0 or 26.0 g/kg DM increased (p < 0.05) the plasma total antioxidant capability. It was concluded that supplementing TA in the ration of beef cattle decreased the CH4 production and digestibility of CP of beef cattle. Supplementing TA could be an effective option to mitigate CH4 emission form cattle, further research is necessary to study the effects of TA on the performance of cattle.

Abstract
Cardiac tropnoin I (cTnI) plays a critical role in the regulation of diastolic function, and its low expression may result in cardiac diastolic dysfunction, which is the most common form of cardiovascular disorders in older adults. In this study, cTnI expression levels were determined in mice at various ages and cardiac function was measured and compared between young adult mice (3 and 10 months) and older mice (18 months). The data indicated that the cTnI levels reached a peak high in young adult hearts (3 months), but decreased in older hearts (18 months). Furthermore, the older hearts showed a significant diastolic dysfunction observed by P-V loop and echocardiography measurements. To further define the mechanism underlying the cTnI decrease in aging hearts, we tested DNA methylation and histone acetylation modifications of cTnI gene. We found that acetylation of histone near the promoter region of cTnI gene played an important role in regulation of cTnI expression in the heart at different ages. Our study indicates that epigenetic modification caused cTnI expression decrease is one of the possible causes that result in a reduced cTnI level and diastolic dysfunction in the older hearts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the efficacy of the circumferential decompression with posterior transpedicular osteotomy and segmental instrumentation with interbody fusion for thoracic ossification of posterior Iongitudinal ligament (T-OPLL). METHODS From May 2012 to June 2015, 16 consecutive patients underwent posterior transpedicular osteotomy and segmental instrumentation with interbody fusion.Osteotomy range was depended by length and types of OPLL.Patient's data included level, clinical presentation, blood loss, length of surgery, complications, VAS, JOA, and Frankel grading system before and after the surgery. All data were collected, retrospectively. RESULTS The follow-up period was (30±19) months (range from 12 to 50 months). The operation time was (261.6±51.3) min (range from 190 to 310 min). The blood loss was (980.3±370.5) ml (range from 600 to 2 100 ml). All patients were well treated with posterior compression and segmental instrumentation with interbody fusion.The VAS score was (4.2±0.2) in all patients at a week, improving to (2.7±0.1) points at 3 months, (2.4±0.2) at 1 year, and (2.0±0.1) at last fellow-up.The statistical analysis of the results showed a significant improvement of pain at 3 months (P<0.05) when compared to the preoperative status.The preoperative JOA score was (4.2±1.7) in all patients, improving to (7.8±2.5) points at 3 months, (8.5±2.7) at 1 year, and (9.0±1.0) at last fellow-up.The mean recovery rate for the total JOA score was (72%±8%). Differences in the overall JOA Scores showed significant postoperative improvement.Frankel grade improved by either 1 or 2 grades in 16 patients at the last follow-up.None of the patients showed any signs of instrument migration or failure during follow-up. CONCLUSION The results suggested that the procedure achieved a total resection of the ossified posterior longitudinal ligament.The treatment method with posterior transpedicular osteotomy and circumferential decompression was found to be safe, effective, reliable, and technically feasible.

Abstract
The goal of this work was to investigate the correlations between MyHC mRNA transcription and their corresponding protein expressions in porcine longissimus muscle (LM) during postnatal growth of pigs. Five DLY (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) crossbred pigs were selected, slaughtered and sampled at postnatal 7, 30, 60, 120, and 180 days, respectively. Each muscle was subjected to quantity MyHCs protein contents through an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), to quantity myosin heavy-chains (MyHCs) mRNA abundances using real-time polymerase chain reaction. We calculated the proportion (%) of each MyHC to total of four MyHC for two levels, respectively. Moreover, the activities of several key energy metabolism enzymes were determined in LM. The result showed that mRNA transcription and protein expression of MyHC I, IIa, IIx and IIb in LM all presented some obvious changes with postnatal aging of pigs, especially at the early stage after birth, and their mRNA transcriptions were easy to be influenced than their protein expressions. The relative proportion of each MyHC mRNA was significantly positively related to that of its corresponding protein (p<0.01), and MyHC I mRNA proportion was positively correlated with creatine kinase (CK), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) activities (p<0.05). These data suggested that MyHC mRNA transcription can be used to reflect MyHC expression, metabolism property and adaptive plasticity of porcine skeletal muscles, and MyHC mRNA composition could be a molecular index reflecting muscle fiber type characteristics.

Abstract
Abnormally expressed microRNAs (miRNAs) and genes have been found to play key roles in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), but little is known about the underlying mechanisms. The aim of this paper was to assess inter-relationships and the regulatory mechanisms of ESCC through a network-based approach. We built three regulatory networks: an abnormally expressed network, a related network and a global network. Unlike previous examples, containing information only on genes or miRNAs, the prime focus was on relationships. It is worth noting that abnormally expressed network emerged as a fault map of ESCC. Theoretically, ESCC might be treated and prevented by correcting the included errors. In addition, the predicted transcription factors (TFs) obtained by the P-match method also warrant further study. Our results may further guide gene therapy researchers in the study of ESCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules found in multicellular eukaryotes which are implicated in development of cancer, including cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). Expression is controlled by transcription factors (TFs) that bind to specific DNA sequences, thereby controlling the flow (or transcription) of genetic information from DNA to messenger RNA. Interactions result in biological signal control networks. MATERIALS AND METHODS Molecular components involved in cSCC were here assembled at abnormally expressed, related and global levels. Networks at these three levels were constructed with corresponding biological factors in term of interactions between miRNAs and target genes, TFs and miRNAs, and host genes and miRNAs. Up/down regulation or mutation of the factors were considered in the context of the regulation and significant patterns were extracted. RESULTS Participants of the networks were evaluated based on their expression and regulation of other factors. Sub-networks with two core TFs, TP53 and EIF2C2, as the centers are identified. These share self-adapt feedback regulation in which a mutual restraint exists. Up or down regulation of certain genes and miRNAs are discussed. Some, for example the expression of MMP13, were in line with expectation while others, including FGFR3, need further investigation of their unexpected behavior. CONCLUSIONS The present research suggests that dozens of components, miRNAs, TFs, target genes and host genes included, unite as networks through their regulation to function systematically in human cSCC. Networks built under the currently available sources provide critical signal controlling pathways and frequent patterns. Inappropriate controlling signal flow from abnormal expression of key TFs may push the system into an incontrollable situation and therefore contributes to cSCC development.

Abstract
Genes and microRNAs (miRNAs) have important roles in human oncology. However, most of the biological factors are reported in disperse form which makes it hard to discover the pathology. In this study, genes and miRNAs involved in human endometrial cancer(EC) were collected and formed into regulatory networks following their interactive relations, including miRNAs targeting genes, transcription factors (TFs) regulating miRNAs and miRNAs included in their host genes. Networks are constructed hierarchically at three levels: differentially expressed, related and global. Among the three, the differentially expressed network is the most important and fundamental network that contains the key genes and miRNAs in EC. The target genes, TFs and miRNAs are differentially expressed in EC so that any mutation in them may impact on EC development. Some key pathways in networks were highlighted to analyze how they interactively influence other factors and carcinogenesis. Upstream and downstream pathways of the differentially expressed genes and miRNAs were compared and analyzed. The purpose of this study was to partially reveal the deep regulatory mechanisms in EC using a new method that combines comprehensive genes and miRNAs together with their relationships. It may contribute to cancer prevention and gene therapy of EC.

Abstract
Through years of effort, researchers have made notable progress in gene and microRNA fields about retinoblastoma morbidity. However, experimentally validated data for genes, microRNAs (miRNAs) and transcription factors (TFs) can only be found in a scattered form, which makes it difficult to conclude the relationship between genes and retinoblastoma systematically. In this study, we regarded genes, miRNAs and TFs as elements in the regulatory network and focused on the relationship between pairs of examples. In this way, we paid attention to all the elements macroscopically, instead of only researching one or several. To show regulatory relationships over genes, miRNAs and TFs clearly, we constructed 3 regulatory networks hierarchically, including a differentially expressed network, a related network and a global network, for analysis of similarities and comparison of differences. After construction of the three networks, important pathways were highlighted. We constructed an upstream and downstream element table of differentially expressed genes and miRNAs, in which we found self-adaption relations and circle-regulation. Our study systematically assessed factors in the pathogenesis of retinoblastoma and provided theoretical foundations for gene therapy researchers. In future studies, especial attention should be paid to the highlighted genes and miRNAs.

Abstract
UNLABELLED In our paper, we systemically retrieved the eligible study evaluating whether increased incidence of subsequent vertebral fracture is associated with vertebroplasty. Main effect sizes were vertebral fracture rates reported in terms of hazard ratio (HR) for time-to-event data or relative risk (RR) for dichotomous outcome. Our results do not support the hypothesis that vertebroplasty contributes to increased risk of subsequent vertebral fracture, neither adjacent nor total vertebral fracture. INTRODUCTION Vertebroplasty has been implicated in significant changes in vertebral strength, vertebral shape, and consequently increased risk for subsequent vertebral fracture, especially the adjacent level. Here, we further tested the hypothesis whether new-onset vertebral fracture is a natural result of osteoporosis or consequence of cement augmentation. METHODS Relevant literatures were retrieved using PubMed, Web of Knowledge, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), supplemented by a hand-search of the reference lists of selected articles. Eligible studies assessed whether increased morbidity of subsequent vertebral fracture is associated with vertebroplasty. Main effect sizes were vertebral fracture rates reported in terms of hazard ratio (HR) for time-to-event data or relative risk (RR) for dichotomous outcome. Random-effects model was used to account for clinical or methodological heterogeneity across studies. RESULTS Thirteen studies with a number of 2,551 individuals (1,631 in vertebroplasty group and 920 in control group) were suitable for this meta-analysis. In trials that reported adjacent vertebral fracture as time-to-event data (two trials, n = 328), we found a similar incidence of vertebral fracture in percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) group compared to conservative therapy (HR 0.60, 95% confidence interval 0.29 to 1.26; P = 0.18). In trials that reported overall vertebral fracture as time-to-event data (three trials, n = 704), vertebroplasty was associated with a slightly increased but non-significant risk for vertebral fracture (HR 1.14, 95% confidence interval 0.65 to 2.00; P = 0.65). The outcome was further confirmed in the secondary meta-analysis of studies that reported vertebral fracture as dichotomous data. Subgroup analysis according to study design revealed no difference either. CONCLUSIONS Our results do not support the hypothesis that vertebroplasty contributes to increased risk of subsequent vertebral fracture, neither adjacent nor total vertebral fracture. Abstract
With its abilities of trans-synaptic tracing and self-replication and wide host range, pseudorabies virus (PRV) has been applied in the field of neuroanatomy since the 1970s. Four decades of PRV application have made many advances in researches on neuronal tracing with PRV. Mechanism studies focused on investigating infection of primary neurons and tracing direction in secondary neurons, while application studies focused on development of new pathological strains and innovation of tracing techniques. To date, the mechanism and application of viral tracing are not completely figured out yet. Integration of molecular biology technology will improve the efficiency in related researches.

Abstract
This study aims to express pig nuclear transcription factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) p65/p50 fusion protein in E. coli Rosetta, and study its impacts on PRRSV proliferation in vitro. The p65 ORF and mature p50 encoding gene were amplified by RT-PCR, the products were cloned into the pET-21a(+) vector, then transformed into Escherichia coli Rosetta, recombinant fusion protein was expressed by IPTG induction, the expressed product was identified by SDS-PAGE and Western-Blot. The purified and re-folded p65/p50 was added to the 2% FBS DMEM, and the cytotoxicity on Marc145 was observed to select the optimum concentration. The effects of optimum concentration of p65/p50 on PRRSV proliferation activity were investigated by detecting PRRSV infection phase in the culture supernatant using real-time FQ-PCR method and drawing PRRSV one-step growth curve. The results showed the p65/p50-pET21a(+) prokaryotic expression vector were successfully constructed , recombinant p50 and p65 fusion protein was expressed abundantly in the form of inclusion body with molecular weight of 70kD, Western-Blot results showed that the rabbit anti-human p50 polyclonal serum, rabbit anti-human p65 purified antibody could bind specifically to p50 and p65 respectively. The optimum concentration of p65/p50 was 0.4 microg/mL. The real-time FQ-PCR results indicated that NF-kappaB p65/p50 could promote CPE appearance and PRRSV proliferation before CPE appeared, and suppress PRRSV proliferation after CPE appeared, and lower the virus titer levels significantly(P < 0.05). These results will provide some new insight of the pathogenic mechanism and treatment strategies of PRRS.

Abstract
To study the proliferation characteristics of PPV in differently infected way and the variance of concentrations in different cells. A strain of porcine parvovirus(PPV) was adapted to PK-15 cells, and a Real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (FQ-PCR) assay was developed based on the specific region of the NS1 gene of PPV to quantify the PPV. The FQ-PCR was used to measure the viral concentration of virus-infected cells by simultaneous or step by step inoculation and plot one-step growth curves. The proliferation characteristics of PPV strain in different cells lines (HeLa, MDBK, PK-15 ,ST, F81, BHK-21 and Marc-145) was also compared. The results showed the PK-15 cell -adapted strain of PPV produced CPE after 12 passages, and maintained stable CPE at the following 10 messages. The one-step growth curve showed that the virus concentration of simultaneous inoculation was higher than that of the step-by-step inoculation, and the proliferation cycle of step-by-step inoculation was shorter. The proliferation ability of PPV strain in different cells showed that CPE appeared first inPK-15, followed by ST, HeLa and MDBK, and the virus concentration was highest in ST, followed byPK-15, MDBK and HeLa. NO proliferation was observed in F81, BHK-21 and Marc-145 cells. These findings lay a material foundation for the basic researches on PPV and the development of vaccine.

Abstract
A novel method is proposed to fabricate micro Diffractive Optical Elements (DOE) using micro cutting tools shaped with focused ion beam (FIB) milling. Micro tools with nanometric cutting edges and complicated shapes are fabricated by controlling the tool facet's orientation relative to the FIB. The tool edge radius of less than 30 nm is achieved for the nano removal of the work materials. Semi-circular micro tools and DOE-shaped micro tools are developed to fabricate micro-DOE and sinusoidal modulation templates. Experiments show that the proposed method can be a high efficient way in fabricating micro-DOE with nanoscale surface finishes.

Abstract
To investigate the effects of classical swine fever virus (CSFV) virulent strain Shimen (SM) infection on piglets peripheral blood leucocytes, the 60-days weanling piglets were infected with the shinen strain and the peripheral blood samples of the piglets were collected to analyze the kinetics of the CSEV nucleic acid, the peripheral blood leucocytes subpopulation and SLA molecule expression on the peripheral blood leukocytes. The results showed that the piglets rectal temperature increased 48 hours after intramuscular injection of CSFV SM strain, the CSFV nucleic acid was detected in the peripheral blood at 2DPI, the content of CSFV nucleic acid increased and up-regulated to a peak at 6DPI as 10 (4.84 +/- 0.98 times as 2DPI. The amount of WBC, LYM and PLT significantly decreased, where in the amount of WBC decreased to 65.87% at 1DPI and 50% at 2DPI respectively; the amount of LYM decreased to 70.68%, 47.88% and 23.29% at 1DPI, 2DPI, and 3DPI, respectively; the amount of PLT decreased day by day and to 34.59% at 6DPI; the amount of NK, gammadeltaT, Tc, Th, CD3+ CD4+ CD8+ and CD3- CD4- CD8- cells decreased after infection; 78.49% of NK cells decreased at 1DPI and then there was no significant change from 2DPI to 6DPI. The amount of gammadeltaT, Tc, CD4- CD8- CD3-,CD4+ CD8+ CD3+ cells decreased to 41.74%, 43.83%, 15.87%, and 32.96% at 3DPI, respectively, However, the amount of T helper cells decreased continually to 42.95% at 6DPI; the amount of SLA I positive lymphocytes decreased significantly and the amount of SLA I positive CD3 cells decreased to 23.07% and 15.38% at 1DPI and 2DPI respectively; the SLA I positive granulocytes increased continually from 92.20% at 1DPI to 98.30% at 3DPI; the amount of CD3 SLA II + cells in lymphocytes decreased from 1.38% at 1DPI to 0.22% at 2DPI, while the SLA II + granulocytes increased continually to a peak at 3DPI and 53.76% of granulocytes expressed the SLA II molecule, but the percentage of the granulocytes expressing SLA II molecules decreased to 12.54% and 4.06% at 4DPI and 5DPI respectively. The study indicated that the CSFV SM strain infection could escape the immune surveillance and cause immunosuppression through inhibiting the host's innate antiviral immunity and the SLA molecule expression to affect the antigen presentation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the regulation of anoikis by tyrosine kinase receptor B (TrkB) in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma lines. METHODS; Expression levels of TrkB and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were evaluated by RT-PCR and Western blot. Colony formation ability of C666-1 was observed in soft agar. Proliferation rate and apoptosis, that change in cells by treating the TrkB inhibitor K252a and specificity ligand BDNF respectively under suspension culture, were measured by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and the flow cytometry assay. The expression change of TrkB, BDNF and phosphorylation of serine threonine kinase (p-Akt) were investigated by Western blot analysis. RESULTS TrkB and BDNF were identified in C666-1 cells. C666-1 cells could be decreased the proliferation of colony in soft agar by effect of K252a, but BDNF could make the colony prolific. K252a can inhibit the expression of TrkB in C666-1, and prevent p-Akt activation. And exogenous BDNF stimulated up-regulation TrkB and p-Akt, induced anoikis resistance. CONCLUSION TrkB inhibits anoikis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells. Inhibiton of TrkB by K252a can induce anoikis, and may prove particularly effective in treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Abstract
In the present study, a novel hybrid sorbent ZrP-001 was prepared by loading zirconium phosphate (ZrP) onto a strongly acidic cation exchanger D-001. Sorption behavior of Pb(2+), Zn(2+), and Cd(2+) onto ZrP-001 was experimentally examined by comparing with the host exchanger D-001. ZrP-001 was characterized by scanning electron micrograph (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), pH-titration and pore size distribution analysis. Sorption of the heavy metals onto ZrP-001 was found to be pH-dependent due to the ion exchange mechanism. Compared to D-001, a smaller pore size of ZrP-001 due to the ZrP dispersion consequently resulted in a lower sorption rate. Competitive effect of Ca(2+) on sorption of heavy metals onto ZrP-001 and D-001 was compared to elucidate sorption preference of the hybrid sorbent towards heavy metals. More favorable sorption of ZrP-001 than D-001 was observed for all the three metals and their sorption preference onto ZrP-001 followed the order Pb(2+)>>Zn(2+) approximately Cd(2+). Fixed-bed sorption results and its efficient regeneration property further demonstrated that ZrP-001 is a potential candidate for removing heavy metals from contaminated water.

Abstract
Zirconium phosphate (ZrP) has recently been demonstrated as an excellent sorbent for heavy metals due to its high selectivity, high thermal stability, and absolute insolubility in water. However, it cannot be readily adopted in fixed beds or any other flowthrough system due to the excessive pressure drop and poor mechanical strength resulting from its fine submicrometer particle sizes. In the present study a hybrid sorbent, i.e., polymer-supported ZrP, was prepared by dispersing ZrP within a strongly acidic cation exchanger D-001 and used for enhanced lead removal from contaminated waters. D-001 was selected as a host material for sorbent preparation mainly because of the Donnan membrane effect resulting from the nondiffusible negatively charged sulfonic acid group on the exchanger surface, which would enhance permeation of the targeted metal ions. The hybrid sorbent (hereafter denoted ZrP-001) was characterized using a nitrogen adsorption technique, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Lead sorption onto ZrP-001 was found to be pH dependent due to the ion-exchange mechanism, and its sorption kinetics onto ZrP-001 followed the pseudo-first-order model. Compared to D-001, ZrP-001 exhibited more favorable lead sorption particularly in terms of high selectivity, as indicated by its substantially larger distribution coefficients when other competing cations Na(+), Ca(2+), and Mg(2+) coexisted at a high level in solution. Fixed-bed column runs showed that lead sorption on ZrP-001 resulted in a conspicuous decrease of this toxic metal from 40 mg/L to below 0.05 mg/L. By comparison with D-001 and ZrP-CP (ZrP dispersion within a neutrally charged polymer CP), enhanced removal efficiency of ZrP-001 resulted from the Donnan membrane effect of the host material D-001. Moreover, its feasible regeneration by diluted acid solution and negligible ZrP loss during operation also helps ZrP-001 to be a potential candidate for lead removal from water. Thus, all the results suggested that ZrP-001 offers excellent potential for lead removal from contaminated water.

Abstract
The adsorption equilibria of phenol and aniline on nonpolar polymer adsorbents (NDA-100, XAD-4, NDA-16 and NDA-1800) were investigated in single- and binary-solute adsorption systems at 313 K. The results showed that all the adsorption isotherms of phenol and aniline on these adsorbents can be well fitted by Freundlich and Langmuir equations, and the experimental uptake of phenol and aniline in all binary-component systems is obviously higher than predicted by the extended Langmuir model, arising presumably from the synergistic effect caused by the laterally acid-base interaction between the adsorbed phenol and aniline molecules. A new model (MELM) was developed to quantitatively describe the synergistic adsorption behavior of phenol/aniline equimolar mixtures in the binary-solute systems and showed a marked improvement in correlating the binary-solute adsorption of phenol and aniline by comparison with the widely used extended Langmuir model. The newly developed model confirms that the synergistic coefficient of one adsorbate is linearly correlated with the adsorbed amount of the other, and the larger average pore size of adsorbent results in the greater synergistic effect of phenol/aniline equimolar mixtures adsorption.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the occurrence of hearing loss in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and very low-birth weight infant (VLBW) body mass, and to provide evidence for early intervention. METHODS Totally 299 high-risk neonates (598 ears) were divided into six groups: pure hyperbilirubinemia group, pure HIE group, hyperbilirubinemia with HIE group, hyperbilirubinemia with VLBW group, HIE with LBWI group, hyperbilirubinemia with VLBW and HIE mass group. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) was detected in all groups. RESULTS The hearing threshold of ABR and the abnormal rate of hyperbilirubinemia with LBWI and HIE were much higher than that of pure hyperbilirubinemia and pure HIE neonates. CONCLUSIONS Of the three high-risk factors, hearing loss occurs more often and more serious in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia and with VLBW while as HIE body mass. So the babies should receive hearing screening with ABR and be treated in time or following up as early as possible.

Abstract
Pancreatic cancer cells are usually resistant to apoptosis mediated by tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha or FasL, and their toxicity towards normal cells hampers their application for therapeutic use. TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), a novel member of the TNF family, triggers apoptosis in a variety of malignant cells, but exhibits less cytotoxicity in normal cells. To investigate the therapeutic potential of TRAIL, we analyzed the expression of TRAIL and its apoptosis-inducing receptors (DR4 and DR5) in the normal and cancerous human pancreas, and the sensitivity of pancreatic cancer cells to TRAIL cytotoxicity. TRAIL, DR4 and DR5 mRNA levels were concomitantly increased in pancreatic cancers compared with normal controls (P<0.01), and there were positive correlations between the expression levels of TRAIL and DR4, TRAIL and DR5 and between DR4 and DR5 mRNA (r=0.85, r=0.87, r=0.91; P<0.01). Immunostaining revealed the presence of the corresponding proteins frequently within the same cancer cells. In five pancreatic cancer cell lines, TRAIL, DR4 and DR5 mRNA expression was detectable at various levels. However, independent of the presence of DR4 and DR5, TRAIL cytotoxicity assays revealed that pancreatic cancer cells showed a significantly lower sensitivity (LD(50)>85 ng/ml) to TRAIL treatment than Jurkat T lymphoma cells (LD(50)=7.2 ng/ml). These findings show that pancreatic cancers are insensitive towards TRAIL-mediated apoptosis despite expression of TRAIL and its receptors, suggesting the presence of mediators which inhibit the TRAIL cell-death-inducing pathway in pancreatic cancer cells.

Abstract
The MeOH extract of Epimedium sagittatum was found to show neurite outgrowth activity on cultured PC12h cells. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the MeOH extract yielded six prenylated flavonol glycosides, ikarisoside A (1), icarisid II (2), epimedoside A (3), icariin (4), epimedin B (5), and epimedokoreanoside-I (6) as the active ingredients.

Abstract
The short-term safety of an effective and inexpensive new live attenuated Japanese encephalitis vaccine (SA14-14-2) was studied in a randomized trial, using block randomization. Of 26,239 children who were enrolled, half received the vaccine and half served as controls. Subjects were prospectively followed for 30 days for severe adverse events, such as encephalitis, meningitis, and "all-cause" hospitalization. No cases of encephalitis or meningitis occurred in either group. The upper 95% confidence limit for adverse events not occurring among subjects receiving their first dose was 4.1/10,000. Risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals for other adverse events were 0.70 (0.43-1.15) for all-cause hospitalization, 0.91 (0.37-2.22) for seizure, and 0.79 (0.56-1.11) for fever lasting > or = 3 days. These data attest to the short-term safety of the SA14-14-2 virus strain and the hamster kidney cell substrate.
