Well-being effect of international migration and remittance on human and gender development in South Asian countries

This study investigates the well-being effect of international migration and remittance on human and gender development in selected South Asian countries. The study has adopted panel regression analysis using secondary data from the World Development Indicators and United Nations Development Programme. This database contains information on seven South Asian countries from 1995 to 2020. The study simultaneously applied the Levin-Lin-Chu, Breitung and IM-Pesaran unit root tests to check the stationarity of data. After satisfying the condition, econometric models such as Fixed and Random Effects were executed. Pesaran's test of cross-sectional independence, the Westerlund test for cointegration and VIF tests were performed in order to check the robustness of the results. As a post-diagnostic tool, the Hausman test suggests that the Fixed Effect models are appropriate for each estimation. The results demonstrate that personal remittance positively and significantly affects human and gender development. Similarly, international migration significantly influences human development while negatively affecting gender development. The study suggests that these countries should prioritize attaining higher remittances by sending more international migrants. Similarly, the provision of cheaper formal channels for remitting money and giving incentives can be effective for higher remittance inflow. Moreover, negotiation at the government-to-government level can effectively expand the international labour market of the selected countries.

High-resolution melt curve analysis: An approach for variant detection in the TPO gene of congenital hypothyroid patients in Bangladesh

TPO (Thyroid Peroxidase) is known to be one of the major genes involved in congenital hypothyroid patients with thyroid dyshormonogenesis. The present study aims to validate high-resolution melting (HRM) curve analysis as a substitute method for Sanger sequencing, focusing on the frequently observed non-synonymous mutations c.1117G>T, c.1193G>C, and c.2173A>C in the TPO gene in patients from Bangladesh. We enrolled 36 confirmed cases of congenital hypothyroid patients with dyshormonogenesis to establish the HRM method. Blood specimens were collected, and DNA was extracted followed by PCR and Sanger sequencing. Among the 36 specimens, 20 were pre-sequenced, and variants were characterized through Sanger sequencing. Following pre-sequencing, the 20 pre-sequenced specimens underwent real-time PCR-HRM curve analysis to determine the proper HRM condition for separating the three variations from the wild-type state into heterozygous and homozygous states. Furthermore, 16 unknown specimens were subjected to HRM analysis to validate the method. This method demonstrated a sensitivity and specificity of 100 percent in accurately discerning wild-type alleles from both homozygous and heterozygous states of c.1117G>T (23/36; 63.8%), c.1193G>C (30/36; 83.3%), and c.2173A>C (23/36; 63.8%) variants frequently encountered among 36 Bangladeshi patients. The HRM data was found to be similar to the sequencing result, thus confirming the validity of the HRM approach for TPO gene variant detection. In conclusion, HRM-based molecular technique targeting variants c.1117G>T, c.1193G>C, and c.2173A>C could be used as a high throughput, rapid, reliable, and cost-effective screening approach for the detection of all common mutations in TPO gene in Bangladeshi patients with dyshormonogenesis.

Nanostructured ZnO with Tunable Morphology from Double-Salt Ionic Liquids as Soft Template

ZnO nanostructures with tunable morphology were synthesized by the hydrothermal method from two ionic liquids (ILs), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [C2mim]CH3CO2 and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C2mim](CF3SO2)2N and their corresponding double-salt ILs (DSILs). ILs served as soft templates. DSILs were noted for the production of smaller particle size along with uniformity compared to their pure IL counterparts. A changeover of the shape of ZnO from nano-prism to a hexagonal disk-like structure was observed with the addition of [C2mim]CH3CO2 in the medium during synthesis while nano-dice- and rod-shaped particles were obtained from [C2mim](CF3SO2)2N. The effect of concentration of both ILs was explored for the variations of size and shape, and at high concentrations, the morphology was distinct and sharp with uniform size in each case. The synthesized products exhibited excellent phase (wurtzite) purity and polycrystalline nature. The smallest crystallite size was acquired from DSILs, indicating the advantageous effect of the dual anions. The selective adsorption effect of [C2mim]CH3CO2 on certain facets promoted the growth of ZnO clusters along the [1010] direction, while [C2mim](CF3SO2)2N favored the growth along the [0001] direction. Consequently, DSILs rendered interpenetrating hexagonal disks due to the combined action of the anions for controlling the shape. The band gap energies of the nanoparticles (NPs) were consistent with the distribution of size. Extremely strong red emission and negligible UV emission for the synthesized ZnO NPs demonstrate their potential in the advancement of optoelectronic devices.

Synergism in carbon nanotubes and carbon-dots: counter electrode of a high-performance dye-sensitized solar cell

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) play a crucial role in the realm of renewable energy technology by converting solar energy into electrical energy in an efficient and cost-effective way. In the pursuit of improving the photoconversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSCs, this work aims at fabricating a new counter electrode (CE) using a binary composite of heteroatom-doped carbon dots (C-dots) and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (o-MWCNTs). We demonstrate that this binary composite exhibits superior performance to pristine o-MWCNTs, resulting in a remarkable enhancement in the PCE. The PCE of the o-MWCNT/C-dots composite was measured at an impressive 4.28%, significantly outperforming the pristine o-MWCNT electrode, which yielded an efficiency of 2.24%. The enhanced performance of the o-MWCNT/C-dots composite can be attributed to the synergistic effects of heteroatom-doped C-dots since their binding to the o-MWCNTs by activated oxygenic surface functional groups increases the surface area from 218 to 253 m2 g-1. This enhanced surface area results from the reduction of π-π stacking interactions of the individual tubes and production of a new hollow channel in the structure that provides an ideal scaffold for I2 adsorption and electron transfer. We demonstrate the role of C-dots on MWCNT's property modulation toward higher PCE by density functional theory (DFT) calculation and electrochemical analysis. Electron-excess N and S doped C-dots exhibit strong catalytic activity, allowing for rapid electron transfer processes in the CE-electrolyte surface via the donor acceptor mechanism, whereas electron-deficient B doped C-dots undermine the cell performance by forming a charge recombination trap at the CE surface. The synthesized composite has higher redox reversibility up to 100 CV cycles and chemical stability, studied by the post-performance material characterization. The findings offer a promising avenue for the development of high-performance DSSCs, which will help to promote sustainable and renewable energy technologies.

Structural, thermodynamic, and magnetic properties of SrFe12O19 hexaferrite modified by co-substitution of Cu and Gd

A hard magnetic system of SrFe12O19 nanomaterial was modified according to the composition of Sr0.95Gd0.05Fe12-xCuxO19 with x = 0.0, 0.30, and 0.60 using the sol-gel technique. The structures of the samples were evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) along with Rietveld refinement, and an M-type hexaferrite with a hexagonal structure was confirmed with a trace amount of the α-Fe2O3 phase. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed polycrystalline nanoplates in all samples. Furthermore, the bond structures of the octahedral and tetrahedral sites along with the thermodynamic properties of these ferrites were extracted from the FTIR spectra at room temperature. The Debye temperature (θD) decreased from 755.9 K to 749.3 K due to the co-substitution of Gd3+ at Sr2+ and Cu2+ at Fe3+. The magnetic hysteresis (M-H) measurements revealed that the coercivity decreased from 5.3 kOe to 1.5 kOe along with the highest magnetization saturation (Ms) of 65.2 emu g-1 for the composition Sr0.95Gd0.05Fe11.7Cu0.3O19, which is suitable for industrial application. The effect of local crystalline anisotropy in magnetization was explored using the law of approach to saturation (LAS). Finally, thermo-magnetization was recorded in the range from 400 K to 5 K for cooling under zero field and in the presence of a 100 Oe field, and magnetic transitions were tracked due to the introduction of the foreign atoms of Gd and Cu into SrFe12O19.

Ophiorrhiza mungos-Mediated Silver Nanoparticles as Effective and Reusable Adsorbents for the Removal of Methylene Blue from Water

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using a plant extract has attracted significant attention in recent years. It is found as an alternative for other physicochemical approaches because of its simplicity, low cost, and eco-friendly rapid steps. In the present study, Ophiorrhiza mungos (Om)-mediated AgNPs have been shown to be effective bioadsorbents for methylene blue (MB) dye removal (88.1 ± 1.74%) just after 1 h at room temperature in the dark from an aqueous medium for the first time. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms fit the experimental results having the correlation coefficient constants R2 = 0.9956 and R2 = 0.9838, respectively. From the Langmuir fittings, the maximum adsorption capacity and adsorption intensity were found to be 80.451 mg/g and 0.041, respectively, indicating the excellent performance and spontaneity of the process. Taking both models under consideration, interestingly, our findings indicated a fairly cooperative multilayer adsorption that might have been governed by chemisorption and physisorption, whereas the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics mechanism. The positive and low values of enthalpy (ΔH0 = 4.91 kJ/mol) confirmed that adsorption is endothermic and physical in nature; however, the negative free energy and positive entropy value (ΔS0 = 53.69 J/mol K) suggested that the adsorption is spontaneous. The biosynthesized adsorbent was successfully reused up to the fifth cycle. A proposed reaction mechanism for the adsorption process of MB dye onto Om-AgNPs is suggested. The present study may offer a novel finding such as an effective and sustainable approach for the removal of MB dye from water using biosynthesized Om-AgNPs as reusable adsorbents at a comparatively faster rate at a low dose for industrial applications.

Negative Capacitance Dual-Gated ISFETs as Ultra-Sensitive pH Sensors

Ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs) are promising candidates for next-generation pH sensors, enabling highly sensitive and label-free biomolecular and chemical detection. Emerging FETs based on the negative capacitance (NC) effect offer steep-subthreshold switching and higher drive current simply by integrating a ferroelectric (FE) material into the gate stack. Here, we propose a novel NC dual-gated ISFET (NC-DG-ISFET)-based pH sensor, with FE layers integrated into both the top and the bottom gate stacks. The current and voltage sensitivities of the proposed device are extracted from its transfer characteristics, obtained by combining the numerical solutions of the one-dimensional (1D) Landau-Khalatnikov (L-K) equation with three-dimensional (3D) technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulations. Results show that the NC-DG-ISFET can surpass the sensitivity of some of the state-of-the-art DG-ISFET pH sensors. The inclusion of the FE layers into the gate stacks of a baseline DG-ISFET leads to 51% reduction in subthreshold swing (SS), causing a 5× increase in current sensitivity (SI) in the subthreshold region of operation and a 2× increase in voltage sensitivity (SV). The influence of channel thickness and channel length on the sensor performance is also invesitgated. The findings presented here provide a new pathway to leverage the steep-switching behavior of NCFETs for the next generation of highly sensitive and label-free DG-ISFET pH sensors.

Improved electrochemical performance of bio-derived plasticized starch/ reduced graphene oxide/ molybdenum disulfide ternary nanocomposite for flexible energy storage applications

A ternary nanocomposite of plasticized starch (PS), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was prepared via a solution casting process, with MoS2 concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 1.00 wt%. The structural, surface morphological, optical, and electrochemical properties of the nanocomposites were studied. FTIR analysis reveals the formation of new chemical bonds between PS, rGO, and MoS2, indicating strong interactions among them. The XRD analysis showed a reduction in the crystallinity of the nanocomposite from 40 to 21% due to the incorporation of nanofiller. FESEM micrograph showed an increment of the surface roughness due to the incorporation of rGO-MoS2 layers. UV-vis spectroscopy demonstrated a reduction of optical bandgap from 4.71 to 2.90 eV, resulting from enhanced charge transfer between the layers and defect states due to the addition of nanofillers. The incorporation of MoS2 increase the specific capacitance of the PS from 2.78 to 124.98 F g-1 at a current density of 0.10 mA g-1. The EIS analysis revealed that the nanofiller significantly reduces the charge transfer resistance from 4574 to 0 Ω, facilitating the ion transportation between the layers. The PS/rGO/MoS2 nanocomposite also exhibited excellent stability, retaining about 85% of its capacitance up to 10,000 charging-discharging cycles. These biocompatible polymer-based nanocomposites with improved electrochemical performance synthesized from an easy and economical route may offer a promising direction to fabricate a nature-friendly electrode material for energy storage applications.

Altered serum TNF-α and MCP-4 levels are associated with the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder: A case-control study results

BACKGROUND

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a debilitating mental health condition with complex etiology, and recent research has focused on pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines as potential contributors to its pathogenesis. However, studies investigating the roles of TNF-α and MCP-4 in MDD within the Bangladeshi population are scarce. This study aimed to assess the association between serum TNF-α and MCP-4 levels and the severity of MDD, exploring their potential as risk indicators for MDD development.

METHODS

This case-control study enrolled 58 MDD patients from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh, alongside 30 age, sex, and BMI-matched healthy controls. MDD diagnosis followed DSM-5 criteria and disease severity using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (Ham-D). We measured serum TNF-α and MCP-4 levels using ELISA assays according to the supplied protocols.

RESULTS

The study revealed significantly elevated serum TNF-α levels in MDD patients (47±6.6 pg/ml, mean±SEM) compared to controls (28.06±1.07 pg/ml). These increased TNF-α levels positively correlated with Ham-D scores (Pearson's r = 0.300, p = 0.038), suggesting a potential association between peripheral TNF-α levels and MDD pathology. Additionally, MDD patients exhibited significantly higher serum MCP-4 levels (70.49±6.45 pg/ml) than controls (40.21±4.08 pg/ml). However, serum MCP-4 levels showed a significant negative correlation (r = -0.270, P = 0.048) with Ham-D scores in MDD patients, indicating a more complex role for MCP-4 in MDD pathogenesis.

CONCLUSION

This study highlights that Bangladeshi MDD patients exhibit heightened inflammatory and immune responses compared to controls, supporting the cytokine hypothesis in MDD pathogenesis. Serum TNF-α, but not MCP-4, shows promise as a potential biomarker for assessing the risk of MDD development, which could aid in early detection. Future investigations involving larger populations and longitudinal studies are essential to confirm the utility of these cytokines as biomarkers for MDD.

Improved electrochemical performance of multi-walled carbon nanotube reinforced gelatin biopolymer for transient energy storage applications

Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) incorporated biodegradable gelatin nanocomposites (Gel/MWCNT) have been prepared following a facile solution processing method. The Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electronic microscopy (FESEM), and water contact angle (WCA) measurements revealed improved structural properties and surface morphological features of the nanocomposite films due to the incorporation of MWCNT. A four-fold decrease in the DC resistivity was obtained due to the addition of MWCNTs. The specific capacitance of the nanocomposite increased from 0.12 F/g to 12.7 F/g at a current density of 0.3 μA/cm2 due to the incorporation of 0.05 wt.% MWCNT. EIS analysis and the corresponding Nyquist plots demonstrated the contributions of the different electrical components responsible for the improved electrochemical performance were evaluated using an equivalent AC circuit. The incorporation of MWCNTs was found to reduce the charge-transfer resistance from 127 Ω to 75 Ω and increase the double-layer capacitance from 4 nF to 9 nF. The Gel/MWCNT nanocomposite demonstrated improved cyclic stability with a retention of 95% of the initial capacitance even after 5000 charging/discharging cycles. The biodegradability test showed that the nanocomposite degraded completely after 30 hours of immersion in water. This fully biocompatible nature of the nanocomposites with high specific capacitance and low charge transfer resistance may offer a promising route to fabricate a nature-friendly electrode material for energy storage applications.

Epidemiology of malaria in Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh within 2017-2020

BACKGROUND

Malaria causes significant morbidity and mortality in tropical and sub-tropical regions, particularly in humanitarian emergencies including refugee camps in malaria endemic areas. An epidemiological investigation was conducted on malaria disease distribution and risk factors in the world's largest refugee settlement, the Rohingya refugee camps on the south-eastern border area of Bangladesh, within 2017-2020.

METHODS

From February 2017 to March 2020, 30,460 febrile patients were tested for malaria using light microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests. Most were self-presenting symptomatic patients and a minority were from door-to-door malaria screening. Diagnostic tests were done by trained medical technologists upon the advice of the concerned physicians in the camps. Test positivity rate (%) and annual parasite incidence were calculated and compared using chi-squared (χ 2) test or odds ratios.

RESULTS

The overall average annual test positivity rate (TPR) was 0.05%. TPR was highest in people who had travelled to the forest in the previous 2 months, at 13.60%. Cases were clustered among male adults aged 15-60 years. There were no cases among children under five years or pregnant women and no deaths from malaria.

CONCLUSION

This study found very few malaria cases among Rohingya refugees with the majority of cases being imported from hilly forested areas, which were thus assumed to act as the reservoir for transmission.

Investigation of the impact of nonsynonymous mutations on thyroid peroxidase dimer

Congenital hypothyroidism is one of the most common preventable endocrine disorders associated with thyroid dysgenesis or dyshormonogenesis. Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) gene defect is mainly responsible for dyshormonogenesis; a defect in the thyroid hormone biosynthesis pathway. In Bangladesh, there is limited data regarding the genetic etiology of Congenital Hypothyroidism (CH). The present study investigates the impact of the detected mutations (p.Ala373Ser, and p.Thr725Pro) on the TPO dimer protein. We have performed sequential molecular docking of H2O2 and I- ligands with both monomers of TPO dimer to understand the iodination process in thyroid hormone biosynthesis. Understanding homodimer interactions at the atomic level is a critical challenge to elucidate their biological mechanisms of action. The docking results reveal that mutations in the dimer severely disrupt its catalytic interaction with essential ligands. Molecular dynamics simulation has been performed to validate the docking results, thus realizing the consequence of the mutation in the biological system's mimic. The dynamics results expose that mutations destabilize the TPO dimer protein. Finally, principal component analysis exhibits structural and energy profile discrepancies in wild-type and mutant dimers. The findings of this study highlight that the mutations in TPO protein can critically affect the dimer structure and loss of enzymatic activity is persistent. Other factors also might influence the hormone synthesis pathway, which is under investigation.

Occurrence of shigellosis in pediatric diarrheal patients in Chattogram, Bangladesh: A molecular based approach

Shigellaa Gram-negative, non-motile bacillus, is the primary causative agent of the infectious disease shigellosis, which kills 1.1 million people worldwideevery year. The children under the age of five are primarily the victims of this disease. This study has been conducted to assess the prevalence of shigellosis through selective plating, biochemical test and conventional PCR assays, where the samples were collected from suspected diarrheoal patients. Invasive plasmid antigen H (ipaH) and O-antigenic rfc gene were used to identify Shigella spp. and S. flexneri respectively. For validation of these identification, PCR product of ipaH gene of a sample (Shigella flexneri MZS 191) has been sequenced and submitted to NCBI database (GenBank accession no- MW774908.1). Further this strain has been used as positive control. Out of 204, around 14.2% (n = 29)(P> 0.01) pediatric diarrheoal cases were screened as shigellosis. Another interesting finding was that most of shigellosis affected children were 7 months to 1 year (P> 0.01).The significance of this study lies in the analyses of the occurrenceand the molecular identification of Shigellaspp. and S. flexneri that can be utilized in improving the accurate identification and the treatment of the most severe and alarming shigellosis.

A Booster with a Genotype-Matched Inactivated Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) Vaccine Candidate Provides Better Protection against a Virulent Genotype XIII.2 Virus

Newcastle disease (ND) is endemic in Bangladesh. Locally produced or imported live Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccines based on lentogenic virus strains, locally produced live vaccines of the mesogenic Mukteswar strain, as well as imported inactivated vaccines of lentogenic strains, are being used in Bangladesh under different vaccination regimens. Despite these vaccinations, frequent outbreaks of ND are being reported in Bangladesh. Here we compared the efficacy of booster immunization with three different vaccines in chickens that had been primed with two doses of live LaSota vaccine. A total of 30 birds (Group A) were primed with two doses of live LaSota virus (genotype II) vaccine at days 7 and 28, while 20 birds (Group B) remained unvaccinated. At day 60, birds of Group A were divided into three sub-groups, which received booster immunizations with three different vaccines; A1: live LaSota vaccine, A2: inactivated LaSota vaccine, and A3: inactivated genotype XIII.2 vaccine (BD-C161/2010 strain from Bangladesh). Two weeks after booster vaccination (at day 74), all vaccinated birds (A1-A3) and half of the unvaccinated birds (B1) were challenged with a genotype XIII.2 virulent NDV (BD-C161/2010). A moderate antibody response was observed after the primary vaccination, which substantially increased after the booster vaccination in all groups. The mean HI titers induced by the inactivated LaSota vaccine (8.0 log₂/5.0 log₂ with LaSota/BD-C161/2010 HI antigen) and the inactivated BD-C161/2010 vaccine (6.7 log₂/6.2 log₂ with LaSota/BD-C161/2010 HI antigen) were significantly higher than those induced by the LaSota live booster vaccine (3.6 log₂/2.6 log₂ with LaSota/BD-C161/2010 HI antigen). Despite the differences in the antibody titers, all chickens (A1-A3) survived the virulent NDV challenge, while all the unvaccinated challenged birds died. Among the vaccinated groups, however, 50% of the chickens in Group A1 (live LaSota booster immunization) shed virus at 5- and 7-days post challenge (dpc), while 20% and 10% of the chickens in Group A2 (inactivated LaSota booster immunization) shed virus at 3 and 5 dpc, respectively, and only one chicken (10%) in Group A3 shed virus at 5 dpc. In conclusion, the genotype-matched inactivated NDV booster vaccine offers complete clinical protection and a significant reduction in virus shedding.

Progeny Transfer Effects of Chitosan-Coated Cobalt Ferrite Nanoparticles

Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CFNs) are promising materials for their enticing properties for different biomedical applications, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast, drug carriers, biosensors, and many more. In our previous study, a chitosan-coated CFN (CCN) nanocomplex demonstrated potential as an MRI contrast dye by improving the biocompatibility of CFN. In this study, we report the progeny transfer effects of CCN following a single intravenous injection of CCN (20, 40, or 60 mg/kg) in pregnant albino Wistar rats. Biochemical and histological observation reveals that CCN is tolerated with respect to maternal organ functions (e.g., liver, kidney). Atomic absorption spectroscopy results showed that CCN or CCN-leached iron could cross the placental barrier and deposit in the fetus. Furthermore, this deposition accelerated lipid peroxidation in the placenta and fetus.

Multi-stage sleep classification using photoplethysmographic sensor

The conventional approach to monitoring sleep stages requires placing multiple sensors on patients, which is inconvenient for long-term monitoring and requires expert support. We propose a single-sensor photoplethysmographic (PPG)-based automated multi-stage sleep classification. This experimental study recorded the PPG during the entire night's sleep of 10 patients. Data analysis was performed to obtain 79 features from the recordings, which were then classified according to sleep stages. The classification results using support vector machine (SVM) with the polynomial kernel yielded an overall accuracy of 84.66%, 79.62% and 72.23% for two-, three- and four-stage sleep classification. These results show that it is possible to conduct sleep stage monitoring using only PPG. These findings open the opportunities for PPG-based wearable solutions for home-based automated sleep monitoring.

Determinants of maternal morbidity during pregnancy in urban Bangladesh

BACKGROUND

Maternal morbidities especially life-threatening pregnancy complications are major health concerns in developing countries. The main aim is to investigate the prevalence of maternal morbidity during pregnancy and its determinants among women from urban areas of Bangladesh.

METHODS

The secondary data were used and extracted from the latest Bangladesh Urban Health Survey (BUHS) 2013. Several statistical models: Poisson, negative binomial (NB) and mixed Poisson were adapted and compared to explore the best model for investigating potential determinants of maternal morbidity. Pearson chi-square statistic was used for the detection of overdispersion in the data. Results Overall 13.5% of the urban women in Bangladesh suffered from at least two pregnancy complications. The study detected the overdispersion existing in the maternal morbidity count data and found the NB regression as the best choice for analyzing the data because of its smallest Akaike information criterion. Administrative division (Rangpur: p = 0.003, incidence rate ratio, IRR = 1.34, 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.11 to 1.63; Sylhet: p = 0.006, incidence rate ratio, IRR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.11 to 1.82), unwanted pregnancy (p<0.001, IRR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.11 to 1.40), place of delivery (p<0.001, IRR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.53 to 1.86) and wealth index (Poor: p<0.001, IRR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.19 to 1.50; Middle: p = 0.003, IRR = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.08 to 1.36) were found to be statistically significant determinants for maternal morbidity during pregnancy among the urban women in Bangladesh.

CONCLUSIONS

Urban women in Bangladesh with an unwanted pregnancy, from the poor/middle-income group; and living in Rangpur and Sylhet divisional cities have a higher risk of maternal morbidity during pregnancy. Study findings may help the government and relevant authorities to take necessary steps for reducing maternal morbidity and mortality due to pregnancy-related complications.

Studies on Synthesis, Characterization, and Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2 and Cr-Doped TiO2 for the Degradation of p-Chlorophenol

TiO₂ and Cr-TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) have been synthesized by the sol-gel method using titanium isopropoxide as the precursor of Titania. The prepared samples were analyzed by employing scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared analyses. Under UV irradiation, the photocatalytic activities of TiO₂ and Cr-TiO₂ were observed by estimating the % degradation of p-chlorophenol (PCP) as a sample pollutant. The extent of degradation was investigated, varying the catalyst dosage, initial PCP concentration, irradiation time, and solution pH. The experimental results show that efficiency of catalysts initially increases but decreases later on, whereas the % degradation of PCP is the highest at its lowest initial concentration. For TiO₂ and Cr-TiO₂ NPs at their optimal catalyst dosage of 2.0 g/L, acidic pH, and with UV irradiation for 90 min, the observed % degradation of PCP is 50.23 ± 3.12 and 66.51 ± 2.14%, respectively. Thus, the prepared Cr-TiO₂ NPs have enhanced the degradation efficiency of PCP with an irradiation time which is four time less than those reported earlier. From the kinetics analysis, the degradation reaction of PCP is found to follow a pseudo-first-order model and the rate constants are 0.0075 and 0.0122 min^-1 for pure TiO₂ and Cr-TiO₂ NPs, respectively. The present study has further revealed that owing to the lower rate of electron-hole pair recombination, the photocatalytic activity of Cr-TiO₂ NPs becomes higher than that of TiO₂. Therefore, as viable photocatalytic agents, Cr-TiO₂ NPs are suggested to be used also for efficient degradation of other organic pollutants.

Retardation of oxidative rancidity in ghee adding orange peel powder at different storage temperature

This study is aimed to determine and compare the antioxidant activity of Orange Peel Powder (OPP) in ghee at different temperatures (4 °C, 25 °C and 60 °C) for divergent storage periods (0, 7, 14 and 21 days). To compare the antioxidant potentiality, synthetic antioxidant BHA (Butylated Hydroxy Anisole) is used. Twelve ghee samples were prepared where one was control, another one was BHA treated and the rest ten were admixing OPP in ghee at different ratios. After sensory evaluation three highest scored ghee samples (0.5%. 1.0% and 1.5%) were selected. Samples were analyzed for peroxide (PV), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), free fatty acids (FFA) value and radical scavenging activity. Though storage temperature and storage period were increased OPP treated ghee samples peroxide, TBA and FFA values were lowered significantly compared to control samples. Moreover, 1.0% and 1.5% OPP treated ghee samples such values were lowered than BHA treated ghee samples and all these are on the favor of ghee quality. OPP treated ghee samples' DPPH quench potentiality is also stronger than BHA treated ghee samples. Therefore, OPP is a great source of antioxidants and this can be used in ghee as a natural source of antioxidants.

Combined experimental and computational study of Al2O3 catalyzed transamidation of secondary amides with amines

Amides are the most extensively used substances in both synthetic organic and bioorganic chemistry. Unfortunately, the traditional synthesis of amides suffers from some important drawbacks, including low atom efficiency, high catalyst loading, separation of products from the reaction mixture and production of byproducts. Al2O3 is an amphoteric catalyst that activates the carbonyl carbon of the secondary amide group and helps the C-N cleavage of the reactant amide group by attacking the N-H hydrogen. By using the concepts of amphoteric properties of Al2O3, amides were synthesized from secondary amides and amines in the presence of triethylamine solvent. Several aliphatic and aromatic amines were used for the transamidation of N-methylbenzamide in the presence of the Al2O3 catalyst. Moreover, using the Gaussian09 software at the DFT level, HUMO, LUMO and the intrinsic reaction coordinates (IRCs) have also been calculated to find out the transition state of the reaction and energy. In this study, five successful compounds were synthesized by the transamidation of secondary amides with amines using a reusable Al2O3 catalyst. The catalyst was reused several times with no significant loss in its catalytic activity. The products were purified by recrystallization and column chromatography techniques. This catalytic method is effective for the simultaneous activation of the carbonyl group and N-H bond by using the Al2O3 catalyst.

Insights into the nutritional properties and microbiome diversity in sweet and sour yogurt manufactured in Bangladesh

Yogurt is one of the most frequently consumed dairy products for nutritional benefits. Although yogurt is enriched with probiotics, it is susceptible to spoilage because of the presence of pathogenic microbes. Spoiled yogurt if consumed can cause food-borne diseases. This study aimed to assess the nutritional composition and microbiome diversity in yogurt manufactured in Bangladesh. Microbial diversity was analyzed through high-throughput sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. From nutritional analysis, significantly (P < 0.05) higher pH, fat, moisture, total solid and solid-non-fat contents (%) were observed in sweet yogurt. Following the classification of Illumina sequences, 84.86% and 72.14% of reads were assigned to bacterial and fungal genera, respectively, with significantly higher taxonomic richness in sour yogurt prepared from buffalo. A significant difference in bacterial (Ppermanova = 0.001) and fungal (Ppermanova = 0.013) diversity between sweet and sour yogurt was recorded. A total of 76 bacterial and 70 fungal genera were detected across these samples which were mostly represented by Firmicutes (92.89%) and Ascomycota (98%) phyla, respectively. This is the first study that accentuates nutritional profiles and microbiome diversity of Bangladeshi yogurt which are crucial in determining both active and passive health effects of yogurt consumption in individuals.
