Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) pollution poses a serious threat to plant growth and yield. Nanomaterials have shown great application potential for alleviation of Cd toxicity to plants. In this study, we applied graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4 NSs) for alleviation of Cd-toxicity to soybean (Glycine max L.). The g-C3N4 NSs supplementation significantly improved plant growth and reduced oxidative damage in the Cd-toxicated soybean seedlings through hydroponic culture. Particularly, the g-C3N4 NSs dynamically regulated the root cell wall (RCW) components by increasing pectin content and modifying its demethylation via enhancing pectin methylesterase (PME) activity, therefore greatly enhanced stronger RCW-Cd retention (up to 82.8%) and reduced Cd migration to the shoot. Additionally, the g-C3N4 NSs reversed the Cd-induced chlorosis, increased photosynthetic efficiency because of enhancement in Fv/Fm ration, Y(II) and sugars content. These results provide new insights into the alleviation of Cd toxicity to plants by g-C3N4 NSs, and shed light on the application of low-cost and environmental-friendly carbon-based NMs for alleviating heavy metal toxicity to plants.

Abstract
The application of graphite carbon nitride photocatalysts is hampered by their low specific surface areas, few active sites, and low photogenerated electron-hole transfer rates. Here, we report a green and controllable strategy for synthesizing kelp-like carbon nitride nanosheets through self-assembled materials prepared from melamine and trithiocyanuric acid using sonochemistry. The prepared carbon nitride nanosheets showed superior and long-lasting photocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution and the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride. The significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance of carbon nitride nanosheets is attributed to the curled porous nanosheet structure and the appropriate amount of O-doping. This work provides a new design strategy for preparing shape-controlled carbon nitride catalysts via a green, fast, sonochemically mediated self-assembly approach.

Abstract
Exfoliation of carbon nitride (g-C3N4) into an ultrathin nanostructure significantly improves its photoactivity. However, the effects of the exfoliation method on the microstructure and photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4 nanosheets remain largely unknown. Herein, several typical strategies, such as thermal, chemical, ultrasonic and one-step exfoliation, were applied to exfoliate g-C3N4 nanosheets for photocatalytic applications. A procedure capable of controlling the morphology, microstructure, light-absorption property, and visible light photoactivity of g-C3N4 nanosheets was attempted. We found that nanosheets prepared from one-step exfoliation present superior photocatalytic efficiency under visible light than those fabricated by thermal exfoliation and ultrasonic exfoliation. The kinetic constants for bisphenol A (BPA) photodegradation over these samples were determined to be 6.5, 4.5 and 2.3 times higher than bulk g-C3N4, respectively. For chemical exfoliation, excessive oxidation by H2SO4 can lead to the structural defects and deactivation of urea-derived g-C3N4 nanosheets. Carbon nitride nanosheets synthesized by one-step exfoliation exhibited high specific surface area, optimal band gap energy structure, and high charge separation efficiency, thereby increasing visible-light photoactivity. Enabling cost-effective production of ultrathin and robust g-C3N4 nanosheets, one-step exfoliation offers a potential strategy to exploit high-performance g-C3N4 for water purification applications.

Abstract
Nano-enabled agriculture becomes a new and rapidly evolving area of research, particularly, nanomaterials (NMs) with light-harvesting capacities for enhancing photosynthesis. However, mechanisms for the interactions between these NMs and plants are not fully understood. Herein, fluorescent and water-soluble graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets were prepared and used as artificial antenna to amplify light harvesting ability and enhance photosynthesis in maize. Upon root exposure to 10 mg·L-1 g-C3N4 nanosheets, the g-C3N4 can be taken up and distributed in leaves. Also, the nutrients (Mg, P, Fe, and Mn), chlorophyll content, electron transfer rate, net photosynthetic rate, and carbohydrates content in maize were increased significantly by 1.1%, 51.8%, 44.6%, 121.8%, 12.1%, 44.5%, 30.0% and 32.3%, respectively. In addition, the gene expressions of psbA (photosystem II reaction center protein A) and psaA (photosystem I P700 chlorophyll A apoprotein A1) were up-regulated by 56.3% and 26.8%, respectively. Moreover, the activities of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) were significantly increased by 242.3% and 156.3%, respectively. This study provides a new perspective on the use of g-C3N4 nanosheets to promote plant growth and develop nano-enabled agricultural technology.

Abstract
The use of Ag-modified nanomaterials continues to attract attention in biological contamination control, their potential cytotoxicity is often overlooked. Herein, biocompatible carbon nitride is modified with 1 and 5 wt.% Ag and effects of different nanomaterial dose and Ag content on antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity is studied. Pure Ag nanoparticles and AgNO3 is tested for comparison, together with ten bacterial strains including pan-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Cytotoxicity is then investigated in three adherent and two suspension human cell lines, and results confirm that cancer adherent cell lines are the most immune lines and human cervical adenocarcinoma cells (HeLa) are more resilient than human lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549). The HeLa remains over 90 % viable even after 24 -h treatment with the highest concentration of 5%Ag/g-C3N4 (300 mg L-1) while A549 sustained viability only up to 100 mg L-1. Higher concentrations then induce cytotoxicity and A549 cell viability decreases. Our results show the importance of complementary testing of cytotoxicity by LIVE/DEAD assay using flow cytometry with more different human cell lines, which might be less immune to tested nanomaterials than HeLa and A549. Combined controls of new antibacterial agent activity tests then provide increased knowledge of their biocompatibility.

Abstract
In this work, an electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) system was established based on the modified graphite phase carbon nitride to detect brombuterol residues in food. The ultrasonic-assisted acidification exfoliation modification improved the conductivity and specific surface area of the graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4). In addition, the carboxylated g-C3N4 nanosheets as ECL donors and the Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles as ECL acceptors could respectively directly carry antigen and antibody. Therefore, the trouble of introducing additional bridge molecules was avoided. A competitive immunoassay strategy was used for the detection of brombuterol, where brombuterol in the sample would compete with the coating antigen for the limited binding sites on antibody. The proposed ECL immunosensor for brombuterol detection exhibited high sensitivity with a wide linear range from 0.001 ng mL-1 to 1000 ng mL-1 and a low detection limit at 0.31 pg mL-1. This work adopts a very simple way to design the sensor without losing its sensitivity, bringing convenience to its possible future applications.

Abstract
Gold nanostars (AuNSs) demonstrate an intense electromagnetic field around tip of branches. In this research, we employed AuNSs-enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emission from graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-CN nanosheets) to detect CD133 peptide as a cancer stem cell membrane biomarker. In this biosensor, the g-CN nanosheets were decorated with AuNSs (AuNSs@g-CN nanosheets). AuNSs@g-CN nanosheets exhibited strong and stable cathodic ECL emission compared to that of pure g-CN nanosheets. The ECL intensity from the AuNSs@g-CN nanosheets was over 30% higher than that of spherical gold nanoparticles (spherical AuNPs) decorated g-CN nanosheets. The additional ECL enhancement of AuNSs was due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect located around multiple branch tips of AuNSs. The RSD of ECL curves intensities, obtained from successive potential scans for 10 cycles, were less than 4%, indicating the superior stability of the AuNSs@g-CN nanosheets. Under optimum conditions, the ECL intensity of GCE/AuNSs@g-CN nanosheets/anti-CD133 decreased linearly with CD133 peptide concentration in the range of 0.05-100 ng mL-1. The LOD achieved was 0.257 ng mL-1 (S/N = 3). The applicability of the designed biosensor in real samples was examined through the determination of CD133 peptide in spiked serum samples, from which satisfactory results were obtained.

Abstract
Polymeric materials are promising candidates as photocatalysts for environmental purification, however their catalytic performance are still unsatisfactory mainly due to the strong Coulomb interactions between electron and hole that leads to fast charge recombination. Herein, taking graphitic carbon nitride as an example, we verify that installing carbon nitride nanosheets with nitrogen vacancy could break the intrinsic electronic state distribution, forming energy disordered interfaces around the vacancies with the energy difference as large as 0.35 eV. Such a large energy difference is found energetic enough to overcome the strong Coulomb interactions between electron and hole for hot electron and hole generation, as a result showing high electron-hole separation efficiency. Benefited from these advantages, the as prepared material shows remarkable photocatalytic performance toward organic pollutants degradation. The improved catalytic performance is originated from the promoted exciton dissociation that leads to ultra high hydroxyl radical generation. This study offers a new understanding of the excitonic effects for designing advanced polymeric photocatalyst for energy and environment related applications.
