Abstract
The current study aimed to determine the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in ABO blood groups and assess the relationship between the prevalence of T. gondii and blood groups. A literature search was carried out for epidemiological studies that were published through December 2022. A random effects model was used to determine the OR and the pooled prevalence with a 95% CI. The estimated pooled prevalences of T. gondii infection in the A, B, AB and O blood groups were 38% (95% CI 27 to 48%), 38% (95% CI 29 to 47%), 36% (95% CI 26 to 45%) and 36% (95% CI 27 to 45%), respectively. Also, the pooled ORs of the relationship between the prevalence of T. gondii infection and the A, B, AB and O blood groups were 1.08 (95% CI 0.97 to 1.19), 1.10 (95% CI 0.95 to 1.28), 1.08 (95% CI 0.92 to 1.27) and 0.89 (95% CI 0.80 to 1.00), respectively. This meta-analysis did not show any relationship between the prevalence of T. gondii infection and ABO blood groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the association between transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) and ABO, Rh-D, and Kell blood systems among blood donors. METHODS This was a retrospective study of 10,095 donors who visited the Blood Bank at Asir Hospital, Abha, Saudi Arabia. Data including demographic information, ABO, Rh-D, and Kell blood groups, and serological and molecular test results of TTIs (the TTIs were obtained from each donor's records). Chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests were employed to establish possible associations between blood groups and TTIs. RESULTS The prevalence rate of TTIs among donors was 6.3%, with HBcAb (70%) being the most prevalent biomarker among positive donors. Donors with the O blood group were at a higher risk of contracting TTIs. Significant associations were observed between HIV and blood group A (χ2=6.30, p=0.01), HBsAg and group AB (χ2=17.3193, p=0.00003), malaria and group A (χ2=5.0567, p=0.02), and HBV-DNA and group AB (χ2=12.3163, p=0.0004). Also, Kell blood group was significantly associated with HIV (χ2=14.5, p=0.0001), HBcAb (χ2=78.51, p<0.0001), and syphilis (χ2=25.225, p<0.00001). CONCLUSION ABO and Kell blood groups are associated with TTI markers. These findings highlight the need for improved strategies and approaches in screening and managing blood donations to minimize the risk of TTIs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Until 25 July 2022, Australians who had spent more than 6 months in the United Kingdom or territories between 1980 and 1996 were deferred from blood donation due to the risk of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Removal of this geography-based donor deferral on RhD-negative blood availability has not been reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS All donors who donated at least once from 25 July 2022 to 25 July 2023 were included. UK donor status, first-time donor and ABO RhD data were extracted from the National Blood Management System. RESULTS Data from 566,447 blood donors with a valid ABO RhD result were analysed. Of these, 34,560 were new or returning lapsed donors following removal of the UK donor deferral. The median age [range] in years for all donors was 43 [75] with UK donors being older 53 [70]. There was a higher prevalence of RhD-negative status in UK donors (20.2%) compared with first-time blood donors (15.7%). CONCLUSION UK donors were generally older, female and more likely to be RhD-negative. Although UK donors provided a boost to RhD-negative blood collections, the overall prevalence of ABO RhD blood groups in the total Australian blood donor panel remained similar to previous estimates.

Abstract
Non-invasive prenatal tests (NIPT) to predict fetal red cell or platelet antigen status for alloimmunised women are provided for select antigens. This study reports on massively parallel sequencing (MPS) using a red cell and platelet probe panel targeting multiple nucleotide variants, plus individual identification single nucleotide polymorphisms (IISNPs). Maternal blood samples were provided from 33 alloimmunised cases, including seven with two red cell antibodies. Cell-free and genomic DNA was sequenced using targeted MPS and bioinformatically analysed using low-frequency variant detection. The resulting maternal genomic DNA allele frequency was subtracted from the cell-free DNA counterpart. Outcomes were matched against validated phenotyping/genotyping methods, where available. A 2.5% subtractive allele frequency threshold was set after comparing MPS predictions for K, RhC/c, RhE/e and Fya /Fyb against expected outcomes. This threshold was used for subsequent predictions, including HPA-15a, Jka /Jkb , Kpa /Kpb and Lua . MPS outcomes were 97.2% concordant with validated methods; one RhC case was discordantly negative and lacked IISNPs. IISNPs were informative for 30/33 cases as controls. NIPT MPS is feasible for fetal blood group genotyping and covers multiple blood groups and control targets in a single test. Noting caution for the Rh system, this has the potential to provide a personalised service for alloimmunised women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Anti-D is usually immune in nature and is formed in individuals lacking D antigen or having variants/altered D phenotypes. In the Indian population, 93.8% are RhD positive, and R1 R1 is the commonest Rh phenotype. Here we report a rare and interesting case of autoimmune anti-D in an RhD-positive 3-month-old infant leading to warm autoimmune haemolytic anaemia. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Auto-anti-D was detected serologically by immunohaematological techniques such as direct antiglobulin test, antibody detection and identification, dithiothreitol, enzyme treatment, antibody titration and elution. Molecular studies were performed to rule out genetic variants of RhD. RESULTS Anti-D was confirmed in eluate and blood group post elution was B RhD positive. On genotyping using the Indian-specific RHD genotyping assay, the sample was found to be negative for the RHD*01W.150 (most common RhD variant in Indians) but positive for RHD exon 5 and RHD exon 10 along with glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). The sample was further sequenced for RHD exons 1-10 by Sanger sequencing and found to be a wild type, thus, ruling out the presence of an RhD variant. CONCLUSION This case is of interest because of the rare occurrence of autoimmune anti-D in an RhD-positive patient of such a young age (3 months). To the best of our knowledge, only two case reports have been published on autoimmune anti-D in infancy (in 1961 and 1964).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Null phenotypes are characterized by complete absence of all antigens within a blood group system and caused by null variants (e.g., nonsense, frameshift, initiation codon, and canonical splice site variants) in the genes encoding the antigens. Knowing the prevalence and molecular basis of null phenotypes is essential to establish a rare donor program, and the aim of this study was to reveal the prevalence and molecular basis of null phenotypes using the Korean Reference Genome Database (KRGDB) containing whole-genome sequences of 1722 Korean individuals. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Population allele frequencies of null alleles in 39 blood group systems except ABO, MNS, Rh, Lewis, and FORS were obtained from the KRGDB. The prevalence of null phenotypes was calculated using Hardy-Weinberg equation. RESULTS The prevalence of null phenotypes were estimated to be less than 0.001% in all blood group systems except JR and SID. The prevalence of the Jr(a-) and Sd(a-) phenotypes were estimated to be 0.0453% and 0.2323%, respectively. The most frequent null allele of the JR system was ABCG2*01N.01, accounting for approximately 85% of null alleles. DISCUSSION Our approach using a public database allowed us to investigate the prevalence and molecular basis of null phenotypes in the Korean population, which will serve as a guide for establishing a rare donor program in Korea. Considering the clinical significance, Jr(a-) is an important null phenotype that should be typed in the Korean population, and molecular assays targeting the most frequent allele ABCG2*01N.01 may be useful in detecting this phenotype.

Abstract
Previous studies detail that different blood groups are associated with incidence of oxidative stress-related diseases such as certain carcinomas. Bioactive compounds represent an alternative for preventing this oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to elucidate the impact of blood groups on the erythroprotective potential of fucoxanthin, β-Carotene, gallic acid, quercetin and ascorbic acid as therapeutic agents against oxidative stress. The impact of ABO blood groups on the erythroprotective potential was evaluated via the antioxidant capacity, blood biocompatibility, blood susceptibility and erythroprotective potential (membrane stabilization, in vitro photostability and antihemolytic activity). All tested antioxidants exhibited a high antioxidant capacity and presented the ability to inhibit ROO•-induced oxidative stress without compromising the cell membrane, providing erythroprotective effects dependent on the blood group, effects that increased in the presence of antigen A. These results are very important, since it has been documented that antigen A is associated with breast and skin cancer. These results revealed a probable relationship between different erythrocyte antigens with erythroprotective potential, highlighting the importance of bio-targeted drugs for groups most susceptible to certain chronic-degenerative pathologies. These compounds could be applied as additive, nutraceutical or encapsulated to improve their bioaccessibility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate blood type data are essential for blood bank management, but due to costs, few of 43 blood group systems are routinely determined in Danish blood banks. However, a more comprehensive dataset of blood types is useful in scenarios such as rare blood type allocation. We aimed to investigate the viability and accuracy of predicting blood types by leveraging an existing dataset of imputed genotypes for two cohorts of approximately 90,000 each (Danish Blood Donor Study and Copenhagen Biobank) and present a more comprehensive overview of blood types for our Danish donor cohort. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Blood types were predicted from genome array data using known variant determinants. Prediction accuracy was confirmed by comparing with preexisting serological blood types. The Vel blood group was used to test the viability of using genetic prediction to narrow down the list of candidate donors with rare blood types. RESULTS Predicted phenotypes showed a high balanced accuracy >99.5% in most cases: A, B, C/c, Coa /Cob , Doa /Dob , E/e, Jka /Jkb , Kna /Knb , Kpa /Kpb , M/N, S/s, Sda , Se, and Yta /Ytb , while some performed slightly worse: Fya /Fyb , K/k, Lua /Lub , and Vel ~99%-98% and CW and P1 ~96%. Genetic prediction identified 70 potential Vel negatives in our cohort, 64 of whom were confirmed correct using polymerase chain reaction (negative predictive value: 91.5%). DISCUSSION High genetic prediction accuracy in most blood groups demonstrated the viability of generating blood types using preexisting genotype data at no cost and successfully narrowed the pool of potential individuals with the rare Vel-negative phenotype from 180,000 to 70.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of impacted third molars is high in the global general population. The etiology of impacted third molars is not fully understood, but it is thought to result from combined genetic and environmental factors. Some studies have suggested a link between the blood group and the risk of impacted third molars. This study aimed to investigate the association between the blood group and the presence of impacted third molars and its pattern. Method A total of 856 panoramic radiographs were included in the study. The third molars were evaluated for the pattern of third-molar impaction and blood characteristics recorded as ABO group and presence or absence of Rhesus antigen. Results The results showed no significant association between the blood group and the presence of impacted third molars. The prevalence of at least one impacted the third molar was 34.6%. The most common angulation of impacted third molars was vertical (V) (45.1%), followed by mesioangular (MA) (33.7%), distoangular (DA) (13.8%), and horizontal (H) (7.4%). There was no significant association between the blood group and the number of impacted third molars nor between the blood group and the angulation of the impacted third molars. Conclusion This study suggests that the blood group is not a major factor in the development of impacted third molars. However, further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated levels of glucose in circulation which result from insufficient insulin or insulin resistance. The blood group of an individual is thought to be genetically predetermined and plays a vital role in increasing susceptibility to DM for particular blood groups. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the association between ABO and Rhesus blood groups with type 2 DM. A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted on 326 participants (163 type 2 DM patients and 163 age and sex-matched healthy individuals). Socio-demographic data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire while Clinical data were extracted from the patient chart. A blood sample was collected from each study participant for ABO and Rhesus blood grouping. Chi-square test, bivariable, and multivariable logistic regression analysis were employed to indicate the association between different blood group types and type 2 DM. The current result showed that blood group O had the highest frequency among all study participants followed by blood groups B, A, and AB. Blood groups B and A were more common in the type 2 DM group compared with the control group while blood groups O and AB were more frequent in the control group. A chi-square test indicated that the ABO blood group had a significant association with type 2 DM while the Rhesus blood group was not associated with type 2 DM. Moreover, logistic regression analysis showed that B and O blood groups had a significant association with type 2 DM while A and AB blood groups had no association. The findings of this study indicated that type 2 DM has an association with the ABO blood group and has no association with the Rhesus blood group. Individuals with blood group B have a higher risk of developing T2DM (type II DM) as compared to other ABO blood groups.

Abstract
Background Hematological abnormalities are a common complication of malaria infection. However, there is a paucity of evidence regarding it among malaria-infected adult patients in association with the ABO blood group in Ethiopia, particularly in the Harari Region. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the hematological abnormalities among malaria-infected adult patients in association with ABO blood groups at Jinella Health Center, Harar, Eastern Ethiopia. Methods An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from July 10, 2022, to January 10, 2023. Four milliliters of venous blood were collected from each study participant. Drops of blood were used for blood film preparation. ABO blood group was determined by agglutination test using monoclonal anti-sera (Agape Diagnostics Ltd., India). A complete blood count was done using the DxH 800 (Beckman Coulter, Inc, Miami, FL) hematology analyzer. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 26. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression models were fitted. The level of significance was declared at a p-value of <0.05. Results The study revealed that 47.2% (95% CI: 41.0 53.6) of the participants were anemic. Being female (AOR = 3.18, 95% CI = 1.67, 6.04), having the A blood group (AOR = 2.75, CI = 1.20, 6.31), and being infected with P. falciparum (AOR = 2.64, CI = 1.26, 5.53) were all significantly associated with malaria anemia. The overall prevalence of thrombocytopenia was also 67.7% (95% CI: 61.7-73.4%). It was significantly associated with P. falciparum infection (AOR = 8.03, CI = 3.53, 18.25) and high parasitemia levels (AOR = 4.40, CI = 1.57, 12.32). Conclusion Patients with malaria who belonged to the "A" blood group in the study area had anemia as a serious health problem. Hence, frequently checking for anemia in patients with malaria who have blood group "A" can help with early detection and better management of anemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Blood transfusions are performed frequently in goats, but crossmatches are rarely performed. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES Determine differences in the frequency of agglutination and hemolytic crossmatch reactions between large and small breed goats. ANIMALS Healthy adult goats, 10 large and 10 small breed. METHODS Two hundred eighty major and minor agglutination and hemolytic crossmatches: 90 large breed donor to large breed recipient (L-L), 90 small breed donor to small breed recipient (S-S), 100 large breed donor to small breed recipient (L-S). A linear mixed model with treatment group (L-L, S-S, L-S) as a fixed effect and individual crossmatch as a random effect was used to identify variations in reaction frequency among groups and individuals. RESULTS Frequency of major agglutination reactions for L-L, S-S, and L-S were 3/90 (3.3%), 7/90 (7.8%), and 10/100 (10.0%), respectively. Frequency of major hemolytic reactions for L-L, S-S, and L-S were 27/84 (32.1%), 7/72 (9.7%), and 31/71 (43.7%). Individual pairings and groupings had no effect on agglutination reactions. Individual pairings had no effect on the frequency of hemolytic reactions. For major hemolytic crossmatches, pairwise comparisons identified higher frequencies of reactions when comparing L-L to S-S (P = .007) and L-S to S-S (P < .001). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Goats experience increased frequencies of hemolytic reactions compared to agglutination. Significant increases in hemolysis were seen between large breed donors and small breed recipients, compared to small breed pairings. Additional studies are required to determine correlations between crossmatches and transfusion reactions.

Abstract
The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a highly challenging and threatening situation worldwide. SARS-CoV-2 patients develop various clinical symptoms. The olfactory and taste dysfunctions are potential neurological manifestations among SARS-CoV-2 patients; however, their relationship with blood groups has rarely been investigated. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of chemosensitive neurological disorders of smell and taste and their association with blood groups in SARS-CoV-2 patients. The present cross-sectional study was performed in the Department of Pathology, and Physiology, College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A well-structured, self-administered questionnaire was designed and distributed through social media platforms. A total of 922 Saudi and non-Saudi adults aged 18 years or older participated in the study. Out of 922 participants, the number of people who had anosmia was 309 (33.5%), 211 (22.9%) had hyposmia, and 45 (4.8%) had dysosmia. Moreover, 180 (19.52%) had ageusia, 47 (5.1%) and 293 (31.8%) had hypogeusia and dysgeusia, respectively. Among all the participants, 565 (61.27%) had smell-related disorders and 520 (56.39%) participants had taste-related clinical symptoms. The occurrence of anosmia and ageusia was relatively high among females compared to males (p = 0.024). The prevalence of smell-related disorders was 25.0% (230) and taste-related disorders was 23.21% (214) among the study participants with blood group O compared to all other blood group (A, B, and AB) participants who have smell allied disorders 30.69% (283), and taste allied disorders 27.98% (258). The prevalence of chemosensitive neurological disorders involving impaired smell and taste was higher in SARS-CoV-2 patients. These clinical symptoms were common among the participants with blood group type O compared to all other ABO blood group types. The role of certain demographic characteristics was consistent throughout multiple studies, notably with female gender and young adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The molecular research has raised copious hypotheses about different molecular effects on the variable expression of the current virus on the human body. The present prospective study aims to determine clinically as well as statistically, the relation between ABO blood groups and Rhesus (Rh) factor and the severity of the Covid-19 virus. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We conducted a prospective, single-centered study at The Combined Military Hospital Lahore, Pakistan. Details of only those patients who exhibit COVID-19 symptoms were included. The odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval and the chi-square test of blood groups and Rhesus factor was also conducted individually with the severity of disease, outcomes, and respiratory symptoms. P-values less than 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS The chi-square test and odd ratio yielded no significant results when the covid-19 status was compared with the Rhesus factor (p-value > 0.05). However, the results were found to be significant when associations were run between Covid-19 status and all the blood groups (p-value < 0.05). CONCLUSION According to the analytical results of the present study, protective nature of all the blood antigens (A, B, AB, none) was observed in patients presenting with Covid-19 symptoms of varying severity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES A group AB D-positive child presented 1 year after haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) from a group O D-negative donor as group A D-negative. Engraftment remained at 100% in white cell lineages. The reason for the unusual result was explored, and the scarcely reported phenomenon of adsorption of secreted antigen was considered. This study also investigated the prevalence of secreted antigen adsorbed onto donor-derived group O red blood cells (RBCs) in children after HSCT and defined a process for laboratory management. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective data analysis of HSCTs carried out over 19 months at Great Ormond Street Hospital was conducted to identify cases of adsorbed A antigen after HSCT. Investigation of RBC reactions with different clones of anti-A and in vitro experiments was performed to recreate adsorption. RESULTS Nineteen A to O HSCTs were conducted over 19 months, of which six (31%) displayed weak A antigen on RBCs despite full myeloid engraftment. Negative reactions with anti-A were obtained when run on an alternative clone. Laboratory protocols for the future management of these cases have been developed. CONCLUSION Passive adsorption of secreted antigen is responsible for these results and is more widespread than previously reported, as a third of A to O HSCTs at our centre demonstrated this phenomenon. A process has been implemented into the laboratory to manage this cohort, ensuring component groups compatible with both donor and recipient are given, and the shared care centres are aware of these requirements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have reported Blood type O to confer a lower risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, while secretor status and other blood groups have been suspected to have a similar effect as well. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS To determine whether any other blood groups influence testing positive for SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19 severity, or prolonged COVID-19, we used a large cohort of 650,156 Danish blood donors with varying available data for secretor status and blood groups ABO, Rh, Colton, Duffy, Diego, Dombrock, Kell, Kidd, Knops, Lewis, Lutheran, MNS, P1PK, Vel, and Yt. Of these, 36,068 tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 whereas 614,088 tested negative between 2020-02-17 and 2021-08-04. Associations between infection and blood groups were assessed using logistic regression models with sex and age as covariates. RESULTS The Lewis blood group antigen Lea displayed strongly reduced SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility OR 0.85 CI[0.79-0.93] p < .001. Compared to blood type O, the blood types B, A, and AB were found more susceptible toward infection with ORs 1.1 CI[1.06-1.14] p < .001, 1.17 CI[1.14-1.2] p < .001, and 1.2 CI[1.14-1.26] p < .001, respectively. No susceptibility associations were found for the other 13 blood groups investigated. There was no association between any blood groups and COVID-19 hospitalization or long COVID-19. No secretor status associations were found. DISCUSSION This study uncovers a new association to reduced SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility for Lewis type Lea and confirms the previous link to blood group O. The new association to Lea could be explained by a link between mucosal microbiome and SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
Herein, we included 527 individuals from two Hospitals, Chemnitz and University-Hospital Leipzig. In total, 199 were negative for PCR and 328 were positive upon first admission. We used next generation sequencing for HLA-A, B, C, DRB1, DRB345, DQA1, DQB1, DPA1, and DPB1, and in some cases, HLA-E, F, G, and H. Furthermore, we molecularly defined 22 blood group systems comprising 26 genes and 5 platelet antigen genes. We observed a significant enrichment of homozygosity for DQA/DQB in the positive group. Within the negative subjects, HLA-B*57:01, HLA-B*55:01, DRB1*13:01, and DRB1*01:01 were enriched, and in the positive group, homozygosity for DQA/DQB, DRB1*09:01, and DRB1*15:01 was observed. DQA1*01:01, DQA1*02:01, and DQA1*01:03 were enriched in the negative group. HLA-DQB1*06:02 was enriched in the positive group, and HLA-DQB1*05:01 and HLA-DQB1*06:03 were enriched in the negative group. For the blood group systems MNS, RH, LE, FY, JK, YT, DO, and KN, enrichment was seen in both groups, depending on the antigen under observation. Homozygosity for D-positive RHD alleles, as well as the phenotypes M-N+ of the MNS blood group system and Yk(a-) of the KN system, were enriched in the positive group. All of these significances disappeared upon correction. Subjects who carried homozygous HPA-1a were more frequent in the negative group, contrasting with the finding that HPA-1ab was enriched in the positive group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Under the ISBT, the Working Party (WP) for Red Cell Immunogenetics and Blood Group Terminology is charged with ratifying blood group systems, antigens and alleles. This report presents the outcomes from four WP business meetings, one located in Basel in 2019 and three held as virtual meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. MATERIALS AND METHODS As in previous meetings, matters pertaining to blood group antigen nomenclature were discussed. New blood group systems and antigens were approved and named according to the serologic, genetic, biochemical and cell biological evidence presented. RESULTS Seven new blood group systems, KANNO (defined numerically as ISBT 037), SID (038), CTL2 (039), PEL (040), MAM (041), EMM (042) and ABCC1 (043) were ratified. Two (039 and 043) were de novo discoveries, and the remainder comprised reported antigens where the causal genes were previously unknown. A further 15 blood group antigens were added to the existing blood group systems: MNS (002), RH (004), LU (005), DI (010), SC (013), GE (020), KN (022), JMH (026) and RHAG (030). CONCLUSION The ISBT now recognizes 378 antigens, of which 345 are clustered within 43 blood group systems while 33 still have an unknown genetic basis. The ongoing discovery of new blood group systems and antigens underscores the diverse and complex biology of the red cell membrane. The WP continues to update the blood group antigen tables and the allele nomenclature tables. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The chimaerism phenomenon constitutes a significant mechanism underlying ABO phenotype discrepancies; however, its detection has technical challenges. In the current study, we explored different techniques to establish the chimaeric status of ABO blood types. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifteen individuals with possible chimaeric ABO blood type, as suggested by standard tube or column agglutination method and RBC adsorption-elution test, were enrolled in the study. The red blood cells from 11 investigated subjects showed mix-field agglutination with anti-A or anti-B in blood typing; weak A or B antigens on the other four individuals' RBCs were detected by adsorption-elution tests. The genetic study was conducted with PCR-SSP genotype, DNA sequencing of the ABO gene, STR analysis and ddPCR. RESULTS The genetic chimaeric status was confirmed in four (27%) individuals by SSP test alone. The ABO gene sequencing identified an additional ABO allele and enabled chimaerism detection in 10 (67%) subjects. The STR analyses established the chimaerism status in 13 (87%) individuals. In the two cases where neither of the tests mentioned above had positive findings, the ddPCR was adopted, and microchimaerism, with an extremely low degree of chimaerism (0.77% and 0.12%), was revealed. The ddPCR revealed the unequal haplotypes (29.5% B vs. 70.5% O) in one subject and distinguished this B/O-O/O chimaera from certain B subgroups (B/O genotype without any mutation) like B3 . CONCLUSION The ABO blood type chimaerism can be genetically established by comprehensive molecular methods, including PCR-SSP/DNA sequencing, STR and ddPCR, which is particularly sensitive for the detection of microchimaerism.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the race/ethnicity-specific association between blood type and COVID-19 susceptibility during March, 2020 and December, 2021 using data from the electronic health record at the University of Chicago Medicine. The study population was stratified into four groups: non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, and other. Log-binomial generalized mixed model was used to estimate the relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). When compared to blood type O, type B was associated with positive COVID-19 test in Blacks (RR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.02-1.23), Whites (RR = 1.28, 95% CI: 0.99-1.66), and Hispanic (RR = 1.36, 95% CI: 0.97-1.92).

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES It is reported that ABO antibodies have a role in COVID-19 infection and severity; however, ABO antibody titres vary with advanced age. The aim was to analyse the association between ABO blood group and risk of COVID-19 infection and complications in elderly patients, and to contrast this data with findings in the overall adult population. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective cohort study of the Navarre (Spain) population aged ≥60 years and a meta-analysis of published studies including participants of ≥60 years were carried out. RESULTS In the Navarre elderly population, a higher risk of COVID-19 infection was identified in the A versus non-A and O group and lower risk in O versus non-O, with no significant association between hospitalization, intensive care unit admission or mortality and any of the blood groups, results that coincide with those of the overall Navarre adult population. The meta-analyses using studies that included participants of ≥60 years demonstrated a higher risk of hospitalization and mortality in A versus non-A and a lower mortality risk with B versus non-B. Similar mortality results were found in the meta-analyses of the overall adult population. CONCLUSION There are no relevant differences between the overall adult population and population aged ≥60 years in the risk of COVID-19 infection and severity according to ABO blood groups, suggesting that age-related changes in ABO would be of limited clinical significance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE(S) This study aimed investigate association of HLA-DRB1 and cytokine polymorphisms with red blood cell(RBC) alloimmunization in Brazilian Myelodysplastic syndrome(MDS) patients with prior exposure to RBC transfusion. BACKGROUND MDS patients are at risk RBC alloimmunization due to chronic RBC transfusion. However, differences in immune response of MDS transfused patients are not completely known. METHODS/MATERIALS A retrospective cohort of 87 polytransfused patients with MDS including 28 alloimmunized (PA) and 59 non-alloimmunized (PNA) was evaluated in three Brazilian reference hospitals. HLA-DRB1genotype was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-SSOP (Luminex platform) and cytokine polymorphisms analysed by PCR and TaqMan assays. RESULTS While HLA-DRB1 allele frequencies did not differ between groups, IL17A 197G > A SNP and IL4 polymorphisms showed significant correlation with RBC alloimmunization. IL17A 197A allele A and AA genotype were significantly more frequent in PA than PNA(A, 46.4% versus 27.1%, p = 0.012; OR = 2.3; 95%CI = 1.1-4.9; AA, 25% versus 6.8%, p = 0.041; OR = 6.2; 95%CI 1.3-30.8). Moreover, significant association of alloimmunization to Rh antigens with IL17A 197A allele and AA genotype was also identified in PA group(A, 45% versus 27.1%, p = 0.036; OR = 2.5; 95% CI 1.1-5.7; AA, 30% versus 6.8%, p = 0.042; OR = 7.9; 95%CI 1.5-42.3). Genotype A1A2 of IL4 intron 3 was overrepresented in PA(50% versus 16.9%, p = 0.009; OR = 4.97; 95%CI 1.6-15.5). Similarly, IL4-590 CT genotype was overrepresented in PA(53.6% versus 28.8%, p = 0.049; OR = 3.3; 95%CI 1.2-9.3). CONCLUSIONS This study showed no association regarding HLA-DRB1 alleles for RBC alloimmunization risk or protection, however the IL17A 197G>A, IL4 intron 3 and IL4 590C>T SNP was significantly associated to RBC alloimmunization risk in this cohort of Brazilian MDS patients.

Abstract
The Dombrock (DO) blood group system has two primary antigens, Doa and Dob, which can cause delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions. The paucity of specific monospecific antibodies can hamper the typing based on these antigens. Thus, blood group genotyping (BGG) was investigated as a possible solution. Sequence-specific primers were designed to target a single nucleotide polymorphism (rs11276) on the ART4 gene encoding the DO*A and DO*B alleles. Blood samples (n = 150) from randomly selected volunteer donors were used. DNA was extracted and resulting PCR products were purified and sequenced. The allelic frequencies of DO*A and DO*B were (n = 122, 40.67%) and (n = 178, 59.33%), respectively. The distributions of DO genotypes were as follows: DO*A/DO*A (n = 20), 13.33%; DO*B/DO*B (n = 48), 32.00%; and DO*A/DO*B (n = 82), 54.67%. In conclusion, this study reports on the allelic frequencies of DO*A and DO*B of the DO blood group system in Jazan Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, this study reports on the prevalence of each genotype, of which DO*A/DO*B was the most abundant. This study contributes significantly to build the current blood donor database in Southwestern Saudi Arabia. Moreover, it may assist in providing safe blood to polytransfused patients and reduce the risk of the red cell alloimmunization.

Abstract
The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) is considered a global catastrophe that has overwhelmed health care systems. Since initiation of the pandemic, identification of characteristics that might influence risk of infection and poor disease outcomes have been of paramount interest. Blood group phenotypes are genetically inherited characteristics whose association with certain infectious diseases have long been debated. The aim of this review is to identify whether a certain type of blood group may influence an individual’s susceptibility to SARS‐CoV‐2 infection and developing severe outcomes. Our review shows that blood group O protects individuals against SARS‐CoV‐2, whereas blood group A predisposes them to being infected. Although the association between blood groups and outcomes of COVID‐19 is not consistent, it is speculated that non‐O blood group carriers with COVID‐19 are at higher risk of developing severe outcomes in comparison to O blood group. The interaction between blood groups and SARS‐CoV‐2 infection is hypothesized to be as result of natural antibodies against blood group antigens that may act as a part of innate immune response to neutralize viral particles. Alternatively, blood group antigens could serve as additional receptors for the virus and individuals who are capable of expressing these antigens on epithelial cells, which are known as secretors, would then have a high propensity to be affected by SARS‐CoV‐2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mosquitoes express different degrees of preference towards hosts depending on behavioral, ecological, and physiological factors. These preferences have implications for mosquito-borne disease risk. This study investigated the effect of human blood groups on the behavior and fecundity of the female Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) from March 2018 to August 2019. In laboratory tests, mosquitoes were fed artificial membrane feeders on A, AB, B, and O blood groups. The level of attraction to different blood groups was tested under controlled conditions with a wind tunnel bioassay. RESULTS The responses of Ae. aegypti to the blood groups treatments in the five-choice tunnel chambers showed a significant preference (Kruskal-Wallis (2 = 85.772, df = 4, P < 0.0001) for favor blood group B. Also, the response of Ae. aegypti to olfactory cues (filth) derived from a pool of volunteers cutting across the blood groups showed a similar preference for pattern towards the blood group B. The percentage rate of digestibility in Ae. aegypti was highest in those fed on blood group O, while individuals fed on the AB blood group had the lowest digestion rate. Thus, the rate of digestibility highly varied significantly (P < 0.0001) between blood groups. Overall, Ae. aegypti fed on blood group B had the highest average feeding rate, number of females with eggs, and fecundity level, which showed a significant difference (P < 0.0001) on preferred. CONCLUSION This study provides novel insight into the ABO host choice of Ae. aegypti and reinforces the need for personal protection against dengue virus transmission in light of the increased risk of exposure for individuals with B blood type. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Simple Summary Numerous breeds have been identified in the domestic cat, grouped according to their phylogenetic or geographical origin. In the cat, the AB blood group system is the most important feline system, and the determination of the blood group by specific methods is an essential step to avoid or reduce the risk of an adverse reaction in the recipient patient. Many studies have been published on the distribution and prevalence of blood types in pedigree and non-pedigree cats, but the information has never been collated in a systematic manner. Abstract Domestic cats descended from the African wildcat several thousand years ago. Cats have spread to all parts of the world, probably along routes between civilizations or geographical boundaries, leading to the movement of species, from Asia to the African continent through the Mediterranean basin, and finally to the American continent, Australia, and New Zealand. Currently, 73 cat breeds are recognized by the International Cat Association. With the increasing interest in the selection of breeds, the determination of blood groups in cats has acquired importance over time. The AB blood group system is the most important blood system in cats, in which A, B, and AB or C blood groups are identified. This systematic review describes data from previously published reports about cat blood types and cat breeds. After applying specific criteria, 28 eligible studies were identified in which the prevalence percentages for each blood group in correlation with specific cat breeds were reported. The breeds were, in turn, divided into four groups according to their geographic and phylogenetic origins as follows: Asian cat breeds, American cat breeds, European cat breeds, and breeds from Oceania. Although numerous studies were carried out before 2021, gaps in the literature on the AB system and, in particular, the Mik group are highlighted.

Abstract
Early evidence from China suggested that blood groups may be involved in susceptibility to COVID‐19. Several subsequent studies reported controversial results. We conducted a retrospective matched case‐control study that aims to investigate the association between blood groups and the risk and/or severity of COVID‐19. We compared the blood groups distribution of 474 patients admitted to the hospital for COVID‐19 between March 2020 and March 2021, to that of a positive control group of outpatients infected with COVID‐19 and matched them for sex and age, as well as to the distribution in the general population. Three hundred and eighteen HC+ pairs with available blood group information were matched. The proportion of group A Rh+ in hospitalized patients (HC+) was 39.9% (CI 35.2%–44.7%), compared to 44.8% (CI 39.8%–49.9%) and 32.3% in the positive outpatient controls (C+) and the general population (C−), respectively. Both COVID‐19‐positive groups (HC+ and C+) had significantly higher proportions of group A Rh+ compared to the general population (p = 0.0019 and p < 0.001, respectively), indicating that group A Rh+ increases susceptibility to COVID‐19. Although blood group A Rh+ was more frequent in the outpatients C+ compared to the hospitalized group HC+, the association did not reach statistical significance, indicating that blood group A Rh+ is not associated with severity. There was no significant relationship between COVID‐19 and other blood groups. Our findings indicate that blood group A Rh+ increases the susceptibility for COVID‐19 but is not associated with higher disease severity.

Abstract
Ludwik Hirszfeld (1884-1954) was a Polish physician, immunologist and microbiologist. Together with Emil von Dungern, he showed that blood groups are heritable traits and established the terminology of the ABO blood group system. He discovered A1 and A2 blood groups, and showed for the first time, in a large-scale population study, that blood group frequency differs between populations. During World War I, he volunteered as an army physician. In the interwar period, he helped to create the National Institute of Hygiene in Warsaw and was instrumental in developing transfusion centres in Poland. During World War II, which he barely survived, he co-organized secret medical courses in the Warsaw Ghetto and played a major role in containing the typhus epidemic that ran rampant there since 1941. After the war, he was the first in Poland to put the theory of serological conflict between mother and foetus into clinical practice, saving the lives of almost 200 children by introducing exchange transfusions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major characteristics of the para-Bombay phenotype are the absence of ABH antigens on red blood cells due to fucosyltransferase 1 (FUT1) gene mutation and the presence of these antigens in body secretions due to the active fucosyltransferase 2 (FUT2) gene. An ABO blood group discrepancy can be identified via serological testing, and additional tests can be performed for confirmation. This study aimed to resolve the ABO discrepancy and report two novel alleles on the FUT2 gene in northern Thai para-Bombay families. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Twelve blood samples were collected from five suspected para-Bombay donors and their families. Nucleotide sequences of ABO, FUT1, and FUT2 were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-sequence-based typing. Bioinformatics tools were used to predict the effect of suspected novel FUT2 alleles. RESULTS All samples exhibited normal ABO alleles, concordant with serological test results. FUT1 exhibited three known variants (c.328G>A, c.424C>T, and c.658C>T). Although FUT2 exhibited two known variants (c.357C>T and c.385A>T), two novel alleles were observed. One allele consisted of c.98A>G, c.101T>G, and c.357C>T with predicted normal transferase activity, whereas the other consisted of c.357C>T and c.617T>C with predicted abnormal enzyme activity. DISCUSSION Two novel alleles in FUT2 were reported among the affected para-Bombay individuals of northern Thai families. The c.617T>C variant caused an amino acid change from valine to alanine at position 206, predicted to be an inactive FUT2 enzyme. Inheritance of this variant with the recessive FUT1 allele may lead to inheritance of the rare Bombay blood group in the progeny.

Abstract
The last few decades have seen a pandemic of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which continues to cause substantial morbidity and mortality. ABO blood groups are anthropological and genetic characteristics of a population whose associations with HIV infection are still controversial. This systematic review with meta-analysis was undertaken to investigate whether certain blood groups may have associations with HIV infection. PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases were systematically searched as of 6 September 2021. Grey literature was identified through screening Google Scholar, and reference lists of relevant studies. All observational studies providing data on ABO blood group distribution among HIV-infected and uninfected participants were included. Using a random effect model, risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled to quantify this relationship. Fifty eligible studies with a total of 3,068,244 participants and 6508 HIV-infected cases were included. The overall analysis found that blood group AB increased the risk of HIV infection by 19% as compared with non-AB blood groups (RR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.03-1.39, p = 0.02). Pooled estimates for other blood groups failed to reach statistical significance. Subgroup analyses identified a positive relationship between AB blood group and HIV infection within Asia, patient populations (as opposed to blood donors and general populations), studies with lower sample sizes, high-income countries and studies with a moderate quality score. The sequential omission and re-analysis of studies within sensitivity analyses produced no change in the overall pooled effect. In conclusion, this study identified that blood group AB carriers were more susceptible to HIV infection. Future investigations should be directed toward clarification of the exact role of ABO blood groups in HIV infection and the possible underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Blood group antigens are one of the most important antigens in humans that have an impact on susceptibility to disease and may be used as a prognosis factor in different diseases such as COVID-19. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between ABO blood groups and Rhesus antigen and susceptibility to COVID-19. The clinical data of 398 subjects were used in the investigation collected from 148 cases vs. 250 controls. This information was obtained from Shahid Sadoughi Hospital of Yazd (IRAN) University. Blood groups and outcomes were assessed using statistical tests for four populations: COV + vs. COV− and COV +/deceased vs. COV +/live. Out of a total of 148 COVID-19 patients, 80 (54/1%) were male, 68 (45/9%) were female. Among these patients, 33 (22/6%) had type A+, 44 (30/1%) had type B+, 13 (8/9%) had type AB+, and 36 (24/7%) had type O+. On the other hand, out of 148 patients, 126 (86/3%) had positive blood types, and 20 (13/7%) had negative blood types. As a result, no significant difference was found in the relationship between ABO blood groups and RH type and susceptibility to COVID-19 (p-value = 0.392 and p-value = 0.847, respectively). Other data showed a significant difference between patients group with other parameters such as age (p-value<0.001) and gender (p-value<0.001). Although in this study there was no association between blood type and RH type with COVID-19, findings of the association between age and gender can confirm the results of previous studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Prediction of haemolytic disease of the foetus and newborn (HDFN) caused by maternal anti-A/-B enables timely therapy, thereby preventing the development of kernicterus spectrum disorder. However, previous efforts to establish accurate prediction methods have been only modestly successful. MATERIALS AND METHODS In a case-control study, we examined 76 samples from mothers and 76 samples from their newborns; 38 with and 38 without haemolysis. The IgG subclass profile of maternal anti-A and anti-B was determined by flow cytometry. Samples from newborns were genetically analysed for the A2 subgroup, secretor and FcγRIIa receptor alleles. RESULTS Surprisingly, we found a correlation between the newborn secretor allele and haemolysis (p = 0.034). No correlation was found for FcγRIIa alleles. The A2 subgroup was found only in newborns without haemolysis. Unexpectedly, different reaction patterns were found for maternal anti-A and anti-B; consequently, the results were treated separately. For the prediction of haemolysis in A-newborns, the maternal IgG1 subclass determination resulted in an accuracy of 83% at birth. For B-newborns, an accuracy of 91% was achieved by the maternal IgG2 subclass determination. CONCLUSION We improved the prediction of ABO-HDFN by characterizing maternal anti-A and anti-B by flow cytometry and we presented genetic traits in newborns with correlation to haemolysis. We propose a new understanding of A- and B-substances as immunogens that enhance the maternal immune response and protect the newborn, and we suggest that the development of ABO-HDFN is different when caused by maternal anti-A compared to maternal anti-B.

Abstract
Aim: Many factors have been speculated to explain the COVID-19 complex clinical phenotype. Due to the inconsistent data published on blood groups and COVID-19, we conducted a study on Iranian patients to further assess this association. Materials & methods: This retrospective study was conducted on data collected from confirmed COVID-19 hospitalized patients during March and December 2020 in a referral hospital for COVID-19, 5 Azar Hospital, Gorgan, north of Iran. A total of 1554 confirmed COVID-19 cases were enrolled in the study with blood group (ABO and Rh), demographic, and clinical data available. Results: Of 1554 patients, 1267 and 287 cases had recovered and deceased (due to COVID-19) outcomes, respectively. Most of the cases had O+ (29.6%), the least number had AB- (0.5%), and most of the deceased cases had O+ blood types (31.4%). Logistic regression analysis revealed that groups A- and B- had higher and groups B+, AB+, O+ and O- had lower odds of death than the A+ group. Conclusion: This study indicates that blood types may be related to the clinical outcome of COVID-19. Further studies with a large cohort for multiple people are required to validate this association.

Abstract
Objectives Serological methods may not be reliable for RBC antigen typing, especially in multi‐transfused patients. The blood group systems provoking the most severe transfusion reactions are mainly Rh, Kell, Kidd, and Duffy. We intended to determine the genotype of these blood group system antigens among Iranian alloimmunized thalassemia patients using molecular methods and compare the results with serological phenotyping. Methods Two hundred patients participated in this study. Blood group phenotype and genotype were determined using the serological method and PCR‐SSP, respectively. The genotypes of patients with incompatibility between phenotype and genotype were re‐evaluated by RFLP‐PCR and confirmed by DNA sequencing. Results Discrepancies between phenotype and genotype results were found in 132 alleles and 83 (41.5%) patients; however, there was complete accordance between the three genotyping methods. Most discrepancies were detected in Rh and Duffy systems with 47 and 45 cases, respectively, and the main discrepancy was in the FY*B/FY*B allele when serologically showed Fy(a+b+). All 39 undetermined phenotypes, due to mixed‐field reactions, were resolved by molecular genotyping. Conclusion Molecular genotyping is more reliable compared with the serological method, especially in multi‐transfused patients. Therefore, the addition of blood group genotyping to serological assays can lead to an antigen‐matched transfusion in these patients.

Abstract
Introduction von Willebrand Disease (vWD) is the most prevalent bleeding disorder. Women are more likely to manifest abnormal bleeding symptoms due to physiologic events and menorrhagia is the most common presenting symptom. Methods this case-control study included 168 women aged between 18 and 45. The cases had menorrhagia whilst the controls did not. Blood grouping, activated partial thromboplastin time and von Willebrand factor activity tests were performed on samples collected from consenting study participants. Results the mean age was 29.96 ± 7.37. Mean vWF activity of cases was 66.6% and of controls 97.8%. The mean activated Partial ThromboplastinTime (aPTT) of cases was 31.09s and of controls was 30.40s. There was no difference in the vWF activity between blood group O (86.3%) and non-blood group O (88.0%) participants. Eight women were diagnosed with von Willebrand disease, 6 cases and 2 controls. Higher odds of von Willebrand disease were seen in the cases (OR = 6.6). Epistaxis, von Willebrand and factor activity levels and family history of menorrhagia were associated with an increased risk for menorrhagia. Conclusion von Willebrand factor activity levels were associated with menorrhagia while activated partial thromboplastin time was not. vWF activity levels did not depend on any specific blood group. The prevalence of von Willebrand disease was significantly higher in participants with menorrhagia and repeated epistaxis and family history of menorrhagia pointed to a higher risk of menorrhagia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Next generation sequencing (NGS) has promising applications in transfusion medicine. Exome sequencing (ES) is increasingly used in the clinical setting, and blood group interpretation is an additional value that could be extracted from existing data sets. We provide the first release of an open-source software tailored for this purpose and describe its validation with three blood group systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS The DTM-Tools algorithm was designed and used to analyse 1018 ES NGS files from the ClinSeq® cohort. Predictions were correlated with serology for 5 antigens in a subset of 108 blood samples. Discrepancies were investigated with alternative phenotyping and genotyping methods, including a long-read NGS platform. RESULTS Of 116 genomic variants queried, those corresponding to 18 known KEL, FY and JK alleles were identified in this cohort. 596 additional exonic variants were identified KEL, ACKR1 and SLC14A1, including 58 predicted frameshifts. Software predictions were validated by serology in 108 participants; one case in the FY blood group and three cases in the JK blood group were discrepant. Investigation revealed that these discrepancies resulted from (1) clerical error, (2) serologic failure to detect weak antigenic expression and (3) a frameshift variant absent in blood group databases. CONCLUSION DTM-Tools can be employed for rapid Kell, Duffy and Kidd blood group antigen prediction from existing ES data sets; for discrepancies detected in the validation data set, software predictions proved accurate. DTM-Tools is open-source and in continuous development.

Abstract
Objective The goal of this study was to investigate whether blood group type caused susceptibility to COVID-19 infection. Methods Two hundred and eleven consecutive patients admitted with various symptoms associated with COVID-19 were included. We compared the AB0 and Rh subgroup distributions between patients with a positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test result and the patients without. We compared the AB0 and Rh subgroup distributions between patients with lung involvement and patients without. Additionally, comparisons were performed between the patients both with positive PCR result and lung involvement, and the patients with a negative PCR result. Results No significant difference of ABO and Rh subgroup distributions was evident between patients with and without a positive PCR test result (p=0.632 and p=0.962). No significant difference of ABO and Rh subgroup distributions was evident between the patients with and without lung involvement (p=0.097 and p=0.797). No significant difference of ABO and Rh subgroup distributions was evident among patients both with PCR positivity and lung involvement, patients with only PCR positivity, and the patients with negative PCR test results (p=0.3 and p=0.993). Conclusion All blood group types seem to have an equal risk of COVID-19 infection. Everyone should follow the precautions to avoid the COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The following study was conducted to measure the presence of alloantibodies of Rh and other blood group antigens produced due to fetomaternal hemorrhage in all antenatal women as well as those leading to hemolytic disease of fetus and newborn; presenting to a tertiary care center, G.G. Government Hospital, Jamnagar, Gujarat, India, between April 2014 and March 2016 (2 years). MATERIALS AND METHODS All multiparous women irrespective of their period of gestation or obstetrics history were included whereas those having taken anti-D immunoprophylaxis or with a history of blood transfusion were excluded. Antibody screening and identification were done using Bio-Rad ID microtyping system. RESULTS Out of total 8920 multigravida females, 8488 were D-antigen positive whereas 432 were D-antigen negative. A total of 126 antibodies among 117 females (1.31%) were found; out of them, 33 were found in D-antigen positive females (0.39%) and 84 in D-antigen negative ones (19.44%) looking at overall frequency of other antibodies such as anti-C: 9, anti-c: 9, anti-E: 13, anti-Cw: 1, anti-M: 5, anti-S: 8, anti-Fya: 3, and anti-D: 78; it was found that anti-D is the most common. CONCLUSION The rate of alloimmunization in D-antigen negative women was found to be very high as compared to other studies in western region; hence, strict follow-up of immunoprophylaxis of all Rh D-negative women needs to be taken care of. Apart from this, D-antigen-positive women also show alloimmunization against various antigens giving the prevalence of 0.39%; hence, it should be mandatory that there should be one standard universal protocol for screening of all antenatal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES A 2-year-old female with neuroblastoma needed In(b-), E- red blood cells (RBCs). No units were available at the blood centre (BC) nor in the rare donor programme member's inventories. BC's Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) and its marketing department concentrated on recruiting and testing those donors more likely to be antigen negative based on ethnicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS The BC's communication plan utilized social and traditional media to assist in the search for In(b-) blood. Media strategies directed donors in the United States (US) and Canada to go to their nearest BC for collection, tagging and testing of units. Two segments from each donation were shipped overnight to the BC's IRL (associated with the patient) for testing. Diluted anti-Inb sera was tested by microtechniques to conserve resources. Additionally, the American Rare Donor Program (ARDP) facilitated the international searches and acted as a liaison to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). RESULTS More than 25 000 people responded to the appeal. Seventy-seven BCs submitted segments from 4197 units. Two donors were In(b-) but E+ and thus not compatible with the patient but were submitted to ARDP for future needs. The prevalence of In(b-) units identified in the search was 0·048%. In total, five known In(b-) donors, two from the US and three from international sources, provided units for this patient. CONCLUSION Social media sparked a viral response to the rare blood need. While a match was not found among the units tested, domestic and international searches were able to meet the patient's blood needs.

Abstract
Purpose A2 and A2B are rare phenotypes of the ABO blood group system. Some individuals with A2 and A2B may have anti-A1 antibodies that may be clinically significant or insignificant. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of A2, A2B phenotypes and anti-A1 antibodies in blood donors in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. This study also evaluated the reactivity potential of anti-A1 antibodies. Materials and Methods Blood samples collected from 446 blood donors were typed for ABO (cell and serum grouping) and Rh D. Individuals with blood group A and AB were further subtyped by testing with anti-A1 lectin. In addition to the serum grouping using A1 red cells, A2 and A2B individuals were screened for the presence of anti-A1 in their sera against A1 red cells at 4°C, 22°C and 37°C to determine the thermal amplitude of the reacting anti-A1 antibody (if present). Results Among A and AB, A1 was the commonest phenotype (20.2%, n=90 out of 446) while A1B was found to be 1.8% (n=8) among AB phenotype. A2 and A2B were found to be 2.2% (n=10) and 0.9% (n=4), respectively. Only one individual with A2B blood type showed cold reactive anti-A1 antibody, the strength of which was 32. Conclusion A2 and A2B were the rarest among ABO phenotypes in the studied population. Although rare, anti-A1 antibody is not so uncommon. Care shall be taken during routine ABO grouping especially in cases of mix-field or weak positive reactions in A and AB phenotypes.

Abstract
Background & objectives: Patients with thalasssaemia are at a risk of alloimmunization and the presence of RBC alloantibodies further complicates transfusion therapy. Matching for the critical antigens of Rh, Kell, Kidd and Duffy blood group systems has been shown to minimize alloimmunization. The aim of the present study was to create a database of extensively typed donors for clinically significant and common blood group antigens of Rh, Kidd, Kell and Duffy systems for transfusion therapy of multitransfused thalassaemic patients. Methods: Five hundred O group regular blood donors were phenotyped for Rh, Kell, Duffy and Kidd blood group antigens using haemagglutination technique. Eighty four non-alloimmunized and 15 alloimmunized thalassaemia major patients with known antigenic profiles (determined by polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers) were selected for this study. Results: By analyzing antigen profiles of 500 O group regular donors, a database of 193 donors matching perfectly for Rh, Duffy, Kell and Kidd antigens was prepared for 15 alloimmunized patients. For non-alloimmunized 84 thalassaemic patients, a database of 405 donors was created. Interpretation & conclusions: A database of 500 regular blood donors phenotyped for common antigens of Rh, Duffy, Kell and Kidd blood group systems was created, which would be useful in providing extended antigen-matched RBCs for thalassaemia patients. This will improve the quality and effectiveness of transfusion therapy.

Abstract
AB0 blood group antigens were discovered over a century ago; however, it is still important to study their role in development of various pathological conditions. Today it is known that antigenic determinants of this blood group are present not only on erythrocyte membrane but also on other cells and tissues: platelets, gastrointestinal epithelium and salivary glands, respiratory system cells. In the last decade, a large number of studies have appeared to reveal the relationship between a specific disease and blood group type, meta-analyses have been published. Previously, the authors have studied the metabolic status, cell composition and coagulation profile of clinically healthy individuals for more than on 180,000 donations, that allowed to identify groupspecific features for each blood group. This review presents generalized data on the association of such pathological conditions as coronary heart disease, thromboembolic complications, tumors of various localizations, inflammatory and destructive oral diseases, psychiatric and some infectious diseases with the presence or absence of antigenic determinants A and B. Carriers of blood group 0 (I) are generally more resistant to diseases, with the exception of H.pylori-associated gastrointestinal diseases. Carriers of «antigenic» blood groups A (II), B (III), AB (IV) are more susceptible to development of infectious, cardiovascular and cancer diseases. The presented data demonstrate clinical significance of the definition of group typing not only for selection of blood and its components during transfusion and transplantation, but also for diagnostics, determination of risk group and tactics for treatment patients with different nosologies.

Abstract
Introduction The understanding of blood group phenotypes in Saudi Arabia is limited to the ABO and Rh blood groups. Data for the other major blood group phenotypes in different populations have been widely studied and used as a reference for identifying antigen-negative blood in hospital blood banks. Such information is crucial for facilitating the challenging task of providing antigen-negative blood for patients with multiple antibodies. Objective The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of the major blood group phenotypes in the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia and compare them to phenotypes in other populations. Methods A total of 100 volunteer Saudi donors were included in this study. Red blood cells from the donors were subjected to antigen typing of the major blood group systems (Rh, Kell, Kidd, Duffy, MNS, Lewis, Lutheran, and P) using the gel microtube technique. Results From the Rh blood group system, the e antigen was found in 97% of donors, followed by c at 86%. The Cellano (k) antigen of the Kell system was found in all donors, whereas the Kell (K) antigen was only found in 8 % of donors. The K+k- phenotype was not detected in our study. Unexpectedly, for the Duffy blood group system, the null phenotype Fy(a-b-) was found in 61% of donors. In the MNS blood group system, M+N-S+s+ was the most common phenotype at 24%. Conclusion The frequency of blood group phenotypes in the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia differs from that in other populations because of the diverse ethnic backgrounds of those living in that region. The findings of this study can be used to establish a local donor registry to help provide antigen-negative blood for patients with unexpected antibodies or to create an in-house antibody identification panel to add to the commercial panel that would be useful for confirming antibody identification results.

Abstract
In order to find a connection between the alteration of oral tissues and genetic predisposition to inflammatory and destructive processes in oral media, the cytokine profile of the oral fluid of clinically healthy individuals was determined for various blood group affiliations according to the AB0 system. The group-specific features of individuals with B(III) blood group were revealed: an increase of 32,5% in the content of interleukin-6 and 63,1% in the content of interleukin-8 compared with similar data for people with 0(I), A(II), AB(IV) blood groups, which can predispose to the greatest activity of the inflammatory process in the oral cavity in individuals with antigen B. Confirmation of this fact is an increase of IgA antibodies to gliadin in the blood among patients with chronic generalized periodontitis with B(III) blood group, up to 5,00 U/ml (p<0,01), which indicates the processes of acute inflammation, and along with an increase in blood IgG antibodies to transglutaminase in comparison with a group of clinically healthy individuals, it serves as an indicator of damage to the body's connective tissue at the molecular level. When examining the dental status, pronounced clinical manifestations of chronic generalized periodontitis were found in patients with A(II) blood group, the molecular foundation of which is the highest content of IgA and IgG antibodies to transglutaminase in the oral fluid (0,35 U/ml and 0,45 U/ml), which contributes to the activation of periodontal-destroying inflammatory and inflammatory processes, obviously, with a tendency to the chronic course of the disease. The studies performed allowed us to analyze in clinically healthy individuals a predisposition to alternative processes in oral environments, using gradation by group blood affiliation.

Abstract
Background and objectives A successful routine RBC alloantibody screening programme should not lead to unnecessary emotional burden during pregnancy due to inadequate counselling on the risk of severe haemolytic disease of the foetus and the newborn (HDFN). Rareness of this disease may result in insufficient knowledge and subsequent inadequate information transfer to women, diagnosed with RBC antibodies. We investigated the current knowledge, views and experiences of Dutch obstetric care providers regarding RBC alloimmunization during pregnancy. Materials and methods We performed a quantitative cross‐sectional study, using a structured digital questionnaire to measure knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) regarding maternal RBC alloimmunization among Dutch obstetric care providers in 2016. Results About 10% of obstetric care providers completed the questionnaire. A sufficient level of knowledge was found in 7% of all participants (N = 329). Knowledge about RhD immunisation and prophylaxis was sufficient in 60% of the responders. Knowledge gaps were found concerning the relevance of non‐RhD RBC antibodies, the indications for giving extra RhD prophylaxis and the interpretation of laboratory test results. Healthcare providers estimated their own level of knowledge ‘sufficient’ (primary/secondary care) to ‘good’ (tertiary care), and all participants considered their professional role important within the screening programme. Conclusion Dutch obstetric care providers showed a lack of knowledge regarding maternal RBC immunization. Awareness of the lack of knowledge is necessary to help obstetric care providers to be careful in giving information and even to decide to contact the expert centre before counselling the patient.
