Parental awareness and attitudes towards prevention of respiratory syncytial virus in infants and young children in Australia

AIM

To assess parental awareness of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and the level of acceptance of future RSV prevention strategies.

METHODS

A cross-sectional online survey was implemented targeting "future" and "current" parents of children aged ≤5 years in Australia.

RESULTS

From 1992 eligible participants, two non-mutually exclusive subgroups were formed: "current" parents (N = 1931) and "pregnant/planning" parents (N = 464: 403 also "current" parents and 61 "future" parents). Participants were predominantly (86.6%) aged 25-39 years and 68.5% with university education. The majority (89.6% current; 78.7% future) had heard of RSV. Of those, 64.2% (current) and 50.0% (future) were aware that pneumonia is associated with RSV; 71.8% (current) and 52.1% (future) were aware that bronchiolitis is associated with RSV. In multivariable logistic regression analyses, Australian-born parents (aOR = 2.47 [95% CI: 1.48-4.12]), living in the eastern states (e.g., New South Wales: aOR = 6.15 [95% CI:2.10-18.04]), with a university-level education (aOR = 2.61 [95% CI:1.38-4.94]) and being a current parent (aOR = 12.26 [95% CI:2.82-53.28]) were associated with higher RSV awareness. There was a high level of acceptance for maternal vaccines (future: 79.3%) and infant immunisation (all: 81.7%).

CONCLUSION

While RSV awareness and immunisation acceptance were high, there was limited knowledge of severity of RSV, especially in future parents. Education campaigns need to be developed to increase RSV knowledge.

Parental awareness of the implications of myopia and strategies to control its progression: A survey-based study

PURPOSE

Myopia has emerged as a significant public health concern. Effective methods have now been developed to delay its onset and progression. However, this information may not be reaching parents, and they are key players in terms of implementing the necessary preventive measures. This study investigated parental awareness of myopia, its implications and the strategies available for controlling it.

METHODS

A self-administered online survey was distributed to parents of children 6-16 years of age. To be eligible to respond, their child had to be myopic or at risk of developing myopia due to family history.

RESULTS

A total of 330 parents completed the survey, of which 321 were included for analysis. Sixty-seven percent of respondents had at least one myopic son/daughter, and most were between -1.00 and -1.75 D. Among parents of myopic children, 20.9% thought that their child's myopia progressed moderately. Sixty-seven percent of parents had a significant level of concern about the progression of the myopia and felt that it was caused mainly by the use of electronic devices and genetics. A generalised linear model showed that parental concern was significantly predicted by the perception of evolution (p < 0.001) and the number of known health-related consequences (p < 0.001). Almost 40% of parents were unaware of the existence of myopia control strategies. Relatives and eye care practitioners are the main sources of information. The most well-known myopia control strategy was myopia control soft contact lenses (29.2%), although the option that most parents would opt for was spectacles with peripheral defocus lenses (47.1%). The selection of a contact-lens-based myopia control method correlated significantly with the age of the children (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Society in general and parents in particular need more information about myopia, its consequences and the options available for its control. Eye care practitioners play an important role in this issue.

Parental Knowledge and Practices Related to Foreign Body Aspiration in Children in Makkah, Saudi Arabia

Background Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a life-threatening event and one of the most common causes of mortality in children. As it has different clinical presentations, parental knowledge is essential for early management to prevent complications. Objectives This study was designed to assess the knowledge and practices relating to FBA in children among parents living in Makkah city, Saudi Arabia. Methods An online questionnaire was designed using Google Forms (Google LLC, Mountain View, California, United States) and distributed in October 2022 among parents living in Makkah city. After data collection, an appropriate statistical analysis was conducted. Results A total of 1087 parents enrolled in this study; 63.9% were women and the majority were married 93%. Additionally, 52% of the parents had at least three children. Moreover, 17.6% had an experience of a child having aspirated a foreign body once. The Internet was the most popular source of information on FBA (43.5%). Furthermore, the parents had poor levels of knowledge and practices related to FBA (65.4% and 78.6%, respectively). Conclusion This study reported that parental levels of knowledge of FBA and FBA practices were inadequate. There is a need to increase awareness, which will lead to better outcomes.

Attitudes and emotional status of parents regarding traumatic dental injuries

BACKGROUND/AIMS

Traumatic dental injuries have different effects on children and their parents, depending on the type of trauma and whether it is in primary or permanent teeth. Parents do not always seek immediate intervention for their children after each traumatic dental injury unless accompanied by conditions such as pain or bleeding that will increase emotional stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the emotional status of parents and parents' attitudes toward urgent intervention for different traumatic dental injuries in both primary and permanent teeth.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A questionnaire consisting of two parts was designed with a reliability coefficient of 0.87 according to the results of a pilot study. The questionnaire was sent to parents as a Google Form via online communication methods such as WhatsApp and e-mail. The first part included questions about the demographic data of the parents and children, and the second part consisted of images of traumatic dental injuries of primary and permanent teeth with questions to evaluate the emotional state of the parents and awareness of the necessity for urgent intervention. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the emotional state, and "Absolutely yes;" "Yes;" "I don't have an idea;" "No;" and "Absolutely no" statements were used to evaluate parents' attitudes about urgent intervention. Categorical variables were shown as numbers and percentages and analyzed with Pearson chi-square. Statistical significance was evaluated for p < .05, and correlations between variables were calculated with Pearson correlation.

RESULTS

The survey was completed by 845 parents. All traumatic injuries except extrusion (p = .202; p ≥ .05) had statistically different VAS scores for primary and permanent teeth (p < .05). Parents' attitudes for urgent intervention were statistically significant for all traumatic injuries (p < .05) except 4-mm intrusion (p = .062; p ≥ .05), alveolar fracture (p = .282; p ≥ .05), complicated crown fracture (p = .136; p ≥ .05), and non-traumatized healthy teeth (p = .110; p ≥ .05).

CONCLUSIONS

Traumatic dental injuries with excessive bleeding or tissue loss affect the emotional status of parents more than simple injuries, and they prefer to refer to dentists immediately. Parents responded with higher VAS scores and stronger desires for urgent intervention for permanent teeth injuries compared with primary teeth injuries which shows that parents still do not care about primary teeth as much as permanent teeth.

Myopia progression and associated factors of refractive status in children and adolescents in Tibet and Chongqing during the COVID-19 pandemic

Objectives

To investigate myopia progression and associated factors of refractive status among children and adolescents in Tibet and Chongqing in China during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted to compare rates of myopia and high myopia, axial length (AL), spherical equivalent (SE), outdoor activity time, digital device use, and frequency of visual examinations for children and adolescents affected by myopia in Chongqing and Tibet in 2021.

Results

A total of 2,303 students from Chongqing and 1,687 students from Tibet were examined. The overall prevalence of myopia and high myopia in these two groups were 53.80 and 7.04% vs. 43.86 and 1.30%, respectively in each case. The Chongqing students had a longer AL than the group from Tibet (23.95 vs. 23.40 mm, respectively; p < 0.001). The mean SE of the students with myopic parents in Tibet was lower than that of the students in Chongqing with myopic parents (-2.57 ± 2.38 diopters (D) vs. -2.30 ± 2.34 D, respectively) (p < 0.001). Conversely, the mean SE of the students from urban areas in Chongqing was lower than that of the students in Tibet (-2.26 ± 2.25 D vs. -1.75 ± 1.96 D, respectively; p < 0.001). The Chongqing students exhibited lower SE (-2.44 ± 2.22 D) than their Tibetan counterparts (mean SE: -1.78 ± 1.65 D (p = 0.0001) when spending more than 2.5 h outdoors. For example, 61.35% of the students in Tibet spent more than 2.5 h outdoors daily, compared with 43.04% of the students in Chongqing. Correspondingly, the proportion of students using digital devices in Tibet (64.43%) was lower than that in Chongqing (100%). For the latter, 38.62% of the students in Chongqing spent more than 2.5 h online using digital devices compared to 10.49% of the students in Tibet. Greater monitoring of visual status was observed for the Chongqing students (mean SE: -1.90 ± 1.98 D) compared with students in Tibet (mean SE: -2.68 ± 1.85 D) (p = 0.0448), with the frequency of optimal examinations being every 6 months. Outdoor activity time was identified as a common risk factor for myopia in both of the populations examined, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.84 (95% CI: 1.79-1.90) in Chongqing and 0.84 (95% CI: 0.73-0.96) in Tibet. Digital screen time was associated with myopia and high myopia in Chongqing, with ORs of 1.15 (95% CI: 1.08-1.22) and 1.06 (95% CI: 0.94-1.77), respectively. Digital screen time was also found to be a risk factor for high myopia in Tibet (OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 0.77-1.61). The type of digital devices used was also associated with myopia and high myopia in Tibet (OR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.06-1.68 and OR: 1.49, 95% CI: 0.84-2.58, respectively). Finally, examination frequency was found to correlate with high myopia in the Tibet group (OR: 1.79, 95% CI: 0.66-2.71).

Conclusion

Based on our data, we observed that the prevalence of refractive errors in children and adolescents was significantly lower in Tibet than in Chongqing. These results are potentially due to prolonged outdoor activity time, and the type and time of use for digital devices that characterize the group of children and adolescents from Tibet. It is recommended that parents and children in Chongqing would benefit from increased awareness regarding myopia progression and its prevention.

Eye Care Practitioners Are Key Influencer for the Use of Myopia Control Intervention

Background

The study sought to investigate the self-reported practices of Singaporean eye care practitioners on myopia management and the interaction between eye care practitioners and parents.

Methods

Self-reported questionnaire (1) to eye care practitioners to understand their clinical practice behavior, their opinion in myopia management (2) to parents on their knowledge of myopia control products and interaction with eye care practitioners.

Results

80.0% of eye care practitioners prescribe myopia control in their practice but only 33.1% of eye care practitioners prescribed myopia control interventions during the first visit, and only 41.4% of parents were recommended myopia control interventions by eye care practitioners, of which 75.6% followed the recommendations of eye care practitioners. Eye care practitioners (53.1%) prefer atropine the most and parents prefer controlling the amount of time doing near work (54.5%) and outdoor activities (52.5%). Eye care practitioners had the highest influence on the choice of vision correction with 78.8% of parents choosing to follow them. 66.9% of eye care practitioners did not prescribe myopia control interventions during the first visit as they lack myopia progression data from the patient. Eye care practitioners felt that more education on myopia control products (57.7%), hands-on workshops (47.7%) and management of children (44.6%) would encourage them to use myopia control interventions more frequently. 40.0% of the eye care practitioners were concerned about the cost of myopia control products.

Conclusions

Eye care practitioners strongly influence parents to uptake myopia control interventions. More education and hands-on workshops on myopia and children management can help encourage the use of myopia control interventions by eye care practitioners.

Factors Influencing Parental Awareness about Newborn Screening

Appropriate and timely education about newborn screening (NBS) helps to foster benefits such as prompt follow up, to promote parents' autonomy via informed consent and minimize the harms such as reducing the impact of NBS false-positive results. The aim of this study was to ascertain how mothers are informed about NBS in the Czech Republic and to identify the variables associated with awareness about NBS. The questionnaires evaluating awareness and its determinants were mailed to a random sample of 3000 mothers 3 months post-delivery. The overall response rate was 42%. We analysed 1100 questionnaires and observed that better awareness about NBS was significantly associated with age, parity, number of information sources, child health status, size of maternity hospital and an obstetrician as the source of prenatally obtained information. Although the majority of mothers (77%) in our study recalled being informed by a physician or nurse in the neonatal ward, results have revealed that over 40% of participants did not have sufficient awareness about the principal aspects of NBS. Several measures including seminars for healthcare providers and the development and distribution of new educational materials were adopted to improve parental education about NBS in the Czech Republic.

Parental awareness of young children's pattern of ionic beverage consumption

BACKGROUND

The aim of this study was to investigate consumer perception of ionic beverage consumption by young children as a potential link to their excessive use.

METHODS

We studied parents' awareness of ionic beverages and the current pattern of use in their young children using a self-administered questionnaire.

RESULTS

A total of 424 responses were recorded. Approximately 25-33% of parents believed that ionic beverages are good for health and rich in nutrients and vitamins, but, only 5.9% of the parents agreed with the statement that ionic beverages are safe to consume in large quantities. Regarding their use, 11 children (2.6%) were drinking ionic beverages every day or several times a week. The parents of these children were classified into the frequent use group. The rates at which parents agreed with statements that ionic beverages are good for health and rich in vitamins were higher in the frequent use group than in controls.

CONCLUSION

Parental awareness of ionic beverages, and current consumption patterns in their young children are generally good. Having a positive opinion about the benefits of ionic beverages was associated with excessive consumption.

Youth Problem Drinking: The Role of Parental and Familial Relationships

BACKGROUND

Alcohol use continues to be an important global public health problem and adolescence seems to be a decisive period of time in the development of drinking patterns into adulthood. While most studies concentrate on frequency and amount of alcohol, fewer studies address "problem drinking." Gathering information on youth's alcohol-related behavioral consequences is especially important.

OBJECTIVES

Current research focuses on gathering information on the background of problem drinking behavior with special attention to parental/familial relationships.

METHODS

The survey was conducted within the youth health behavior - Makó research project in 2012 (n = 1,981, aged 13-18 years, 50.9% males). Anonymous, self-administered questionnaires contained items on sociodemographics, substance use, and parental/familial relationships (such as parental control and awareness or variables of family environment).

RESULTS

Problem drinking (identified in 17.2% of the sample) was more common among males and high school students and those from lower socioeconomic status groups compared to their counterparts. Among the familial/parental variables, negative family interactions, discussion of problems with parents, physical and sexual abuse were positively related to adolescent problem drinking, whereas parental control and awareness, and the positive identification with parents proved to be protective factors. Conclusions/Importance: We conclude that parents and the family were important correlates of adolescents' problem drinking. Our findings suggest that on-going school interventions to prevent the development of problem drinking among youth should include parents and the family.

The impact of an educational pamphlet on the awareness of parents about 4‒6-year-old children's oral habits and dentofacial discrepancies

Background. This study aimed to evaluate whether the parents’ knowledge about the adverse effects of oral habits and dentoskeletal discrepancies would improve by an educational pamphlet.

Methods. A parallel-group randomized clinical trial was conducted on parents in kindergartens of Shiraz, Iran, 2013. The parents completed a designed questionnaire to determine the pre-intervention score. The study group received an educational pamphlet on the oral habits and dentoskeletal discrepancies, in contrast to the control group. Three weeks later, the parents in both groups took the questionnaire again (post-intervention score). The primary outcome was a change in the parents’ knowledge about oral habits and dentoskeletal discrepancies, which was measured by 13 questions of the questionnaire. Each correct answer was given a positive point and each incorrect answer a negative point. The total pre- and post-intervention scores were calculated by summing up the points and compared using Mann–Whitney U test.

Results. A total of 550 subjects were assessed for eligibility and 413 were randomized. Of the study group, 203 subjects (98.56%), and of the control group, 204 parents (98.54%) completed the questionnaire for the second time. The score of the study group in the "normal occlusion" section of the questionnaire had significantly improved (P < 0.001) and in the "oral habits" section the score of both groups had improved but in the study group the improvement was significantly higher (P < 0.001).

Conclusion. The educational pamphlet can be effective in increasing the level of parents’ knowledge about normal occlusion and complications of oral habits.

Evaluation of caries in deciduous second molar and adjacent permanent molar in mixed dentition

AIM

This study was done to evaluate association of caries in deciduous second molar and adjacent permanent first molar, tooth surface more involved in permanent first molar and to assess the parental awareness regarding the eruption of permanent first molar.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

Three hundred and ten children (160 boys, 150 girls) of mixed dentition aged between 6 and 11 years were included. Presence or absence of paired association of caries in primary second molar and adjacent permanent first molar, of both the jaws, were noted. Parental awareness regarding the child's dentition was asked by pointing the maxillary and mandibular permanent first molar.

RESULTS

Pearson Chi-square test was used. Significance was noted in both sexes between paired nonassociation of caries in mandibular primary second molar and mandibular permanent molar (P =0.01) and paired nonassociation of caries in primary maxillary second molar and maxillary permanent first molar in girls only (P =0.04). Parental awareness that permanent first molar has erupted was 24.83% and not to be exfoliated and replaced was 22.9% for both the sexes. In permanent teeth of both the sexes, the occlusal surface was more involved with caries in maxillary teeth; the buccal surface was more involved in mandibular teeth. About 10% of the sample did not have caries in both maxillary and mandibular permanent first molar.

CONCLUSIONS

Paired association of caries of primary second molar and permanent first molar though found in large number of cases was not significant. It is clear that parental awareness is less regarding the child's oral health. Thus, community-based awareness program has to be conducted to emphasize on pediatric oral health status and care.

The current situation of voluntary vaccination and the factors influencing its coverage among children in Takatsuki, Japan: focus on Hib and pneumococcal vaccines

This study aimed to understand the current scenario of voluntary vaccination and the factors influencing its coverage among 18-month-old children of Takatsuki City, Japan. Based on 1167 parents responses, we found that voluntary vaccination coverage rates were low when compared with routine vaccination rates. The children who were not the first born of the family and who had young and poorly educated parents were less likely to receive voluntary vaccination. Japanese government-supported vaccines, such as Haemophilus influenzae type b and pneumococcal vaccine, had a higher coverage than the vaccines for which parents had to bear the entire vaccination cost. Furthermore, it was found that mass communication media and family pediatricians were effective means to disseminate voluntary vaccination-related information. We envisage that an active participation of medical professionals, easy access to vaccinations, and mass awareness programs will increase voluntary vaccination coverage in Takatsuki.

Parent awareness of young children's physical activity

OBJECTIVE

Parents who overestimate their child's physical activity (PA) level may not encourage their children to increase their PA. We assessed parental awareness of child PA, and investigated potential correlates of overestimation.

METHOD

Child PA (accelerometer) and parent-classified child PA ['active' ≥ 60 min/day vs. 'inactive' <60 min/day moderate and vigorous PA (MVPA)] were measured over 7 days [n=329, 44% male, 39% Latino; mean (SD) 9.1 (0.7)years] in an obesity prevention study in San Diego (Project MOVE). Agreement between date-matched objective MVPA and parent-classified child PA was assessed; % days parental overestimation was the outcome variable. Associations between parental overestimation and potential correlates were investigated using three-level mixed-effects linear regression.

RESULTS

Children met the PA guidelines on 43% of days. Parents overestimated their children's PA on 75% of days when children were inactive. Most parents (80%) overestimated their child's PA on ≥ 1 measurement day. Parental support for child PA (transport, encouragement and participation with child) (p<0.01) was positively associated with higher overestimation. Parents of girls showed more overestimation than parents of boys (p=0.04).

CONCLUSION

Most parents incorrectly classified their child as active when their child was inactive. Strategies addressing parental overestimation may be important in PA promotion.
