Abstract
Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) are a sustainable solution to treat polluted water, but their role in chromium (Cr(III)) removal under neutral pH conditions remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the potential of FTWs planted with two perennial emergent macrophytes, Phragmites australis and Iris pseudacorus, to remove Cr(III) and nutrients (N and PO4-P) from water containing 7.5 mg/L TN, 1.8 mg/L PO4-P, and Cr(III) (500, 1000, and 2000 µg/L). Within 1 h of exposure, up to 96-99% of Cr was removed from the solution, indicating rapid precipitation. After 50 days, Phragmites bound 9-19% of added Cr, while Iris bound 5-22%. Both species accumulated Cr primarily in the roots (BCF > 1). Biomass production and growth development were inhibited in Cr treatments, but microscopic examination of plant roots revealed no histological changes at 500 and 1000 µg/L Cr, suggesting high resistance of the tested species. At 2000 µg/L Cr, both species exhibited disruptions in the arrangement of vessel elements in the stele and increased aerenchyma spaces in Phragmites. At the end of the experiment, 70-86% of TN and 54-90% of PO4-P were removed.

Abstract
Densification of cities and urban population contributes to increased runoff and suspended solids and alteration of the urban water cycle. Nowadays, Blue-Green Infrastructure is promoted to increase a city's resilience to floods; however, stormwater drainage systems, supported with retention tanks are still important in protecting urban areas against floods. Sediment accumulation in stormwater infrastructure relates to an issue of pollutants such as heavy metals, nutrients etc. Research on the origin of the pollutants associated with the suspension and ultimately sediment accumulated in sewage can bring new insights about processes in urban catchment areas. This is the first study, which is focused on the analysis of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes in bottom sediments collected from municipal retention tanks to verify the origin of the deposited pollutants immediately after pluvial floods. The research was additionally extended with water quality analyzes immediately after three types of weather: a dry period, typical precipitation (< 30 mm) and torrential rainfalls (2 events with daily precipitation over 30 mm which caused pluvial flooding of the city area). Analyses of sediments indicated that the main source of carbon and nitrogen in the bottom of the retention tanks had been brought with stormwater runoff from the city area. Organic nitrogen fertilizers appeared to be the main source of nitrogen, while the sources of organic carbon were mixed: C3 land plants, wood, and oil. Additionally, it was found that torrential rainfall caused a 23-fold increase of N-NO3 concentration, a sevenfold increase of P-PO4 concentration, and an over fivefold increase of concentration of organic matter, in comparison to typical precipitation.

Abstract
Environmentally sustainable remediation is needed to protect freshwater resources which are deteriorating due to severe industrial, mining, and agricultural activities. Treatment by floating wetlands could be a sustainable solution to remediate water bodies. The study aimed to examine the effects of Cd on Phragmites australis and Iris pseudacorus growth (height, biomass, root length and chlorophyll contents), anatomy, Cd accumulation in their biomass and their ability to remove Cd, N and P. Seedlings of both plants were grown in a greenhouse for 50 days in artificially prepared stormwater amended with Cd, N, and P. The treatments were: control (Cd _0), Cd_1, Cd_2, and Cd_4 mg L-1. N and P contents were 4 mg L-1 and 1.8 mg L-1, respectively. In the case of P. australis, the maximum plant height, root length, and total dry biomass production was increased in medium dose (Cd_2) treatment while the chlorophyll index (CCI) increased in high dose (Cd_4) treatment as compared to all treatments. For I. pseudacorus, the maximum plant height and total dry biomass production, root length and CCI values were improved in low dose (Cd_1) and high dose (Cd_4) treatments, respectively among all treatments. Results showed that P. australis accumulated 10.94-1821.59 μg · (0.05 m2)-1 in roots and 2.45-334.65 μg · (0.05 m2)-1 in shoots under Cd_0, Cd_1 and Cd_4 treatments. I. pseudacorus accumulated the highest Cd in roots up to 5.84-4900 μg · (0.05 m2)-1 and 3.40-609 μg · (0.05 m2)-1 in shoots under Cd_0, Cd_1 and Cd_4 treatments. The translocation factor was observed as <1 and the bioconcentration factor >1 for both species, which indicates their phytostabilization potential. Results demonstrate that P. australis and I. pseudacorus are suitable for use in floating wetlands to remediate contaminated sites.

Abstract
Bottom sediments deposited in retention tanks (RTs) located on two urban streams (Oliwski and Strzyza) in the central part of Gdansk (Poland) were analysed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons' (PAHs) content. PAHs were extracted from samples with methylene chloride, then the extracts were subjected to clean-up applying the solid phase extraction (SPE) method. Quantitative and qualitative determination of 16 PAHs was performed with the use of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry technique. A multi-dimensional approach was applied to analyse PAHs' spatial distribution, source, and contamination status. Potential sources of PAHs were verified using isomer ratios supported by a statistical approach. The Σ16PAHs (in mg/kg d.w.) ranged from 1.95 ± 0.64 to 20.4 ± 6.8 for RTs located on the Oliwski Stream and from 0.50 ± 0.17 to 8.6 ± 2.9 for RTs located on the Strzyza Stream. PAHs detected in bottom sediments were mainly composed of 4- and 5-ring compounds. PAH isomer ratios such as Phen/Anth, Flth/Pyr, B(a)A/B(a)A + Chry, Inpy/Inpy + B(ghi)P, Flth/Flth + Pyr, Anth/Anth + Phen, and Flth/Flth + Pyr suggested delivery pathways for biomass, coal, and petroleum combustion. Petrogenic PAHs related to fuel leaks from cars were not detected. Statistical analyses confirmed traffic and heating system sources, while factor analysis (FA) pointed out the abrasion of wasting parts of vehicles. Based on threshold levels presented in sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), in most cases, PAHs were at low levels with occasional negative biological effects on organisms. Only sediments deposited in two RTs located on the Oliwski Stream presented harmful features for sediment-dwelling organisms. The risk assessment performed accordingly to the Σ16PAHs presented a moderate and high risk for biota. This study not only reflects the direct threat related to PAH content in bottom sediments, but also highlights the overall pollution of an area, considered to be a recreational part of the city (Oliwski Stream catchment). The findings of this study highlight the need to launch preventative methods to protect the area against pollution from heating system emission and traffic.

Abstract
Adequate control of blood pressure (BP) is essential to prevent complications in pregnant women with a history of eclampsia or pre-eclampsia. However, the importance of office (OBPM), home (HBPM), and ambulatory (ABPM) BP measurements for proper control and prognosis in high-risk pregnancy is unknown. The present study aimed to compare BP values obtained during these three different BP measurements in women with a history of eclampsia or pre-eclampsia. This study included 79 pregnant women with chronic hypertension and a documented history of eclampsia or pre-eclampsia in previous pregnancy/pregnancies. Every fifth week of the study, all participants underwent ABPM, HBPM and OBPM. BP values from the 10th, 25th, and 37th weeks of pregnancy were evaluated. Therapy was intended to meet the ABPM treatment goal of <130/80 mmHg. Day, night, and 24 h ABPM systolic BP values were lower than HBPM and OBPM values at each study visit. Night and 24 h ABPM diastolic BP values were lower than HBPM and OBPM values, while day 24 h ABPM values were slightly higher than HBPM and OBPM values. ABPM provides different BP values than OBPM and HBPM. Target BP for ABPM in high-risk pregnancy hypertension should be estimated based on the predictive value of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
In this study, the new lanthanum sulfide nanoparticle (La2S3) was synthesized and incorporated onto magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) sheets surface to produce potential adsorbent (MGO@LaS) for efficient removal of lead ions (Pb2+) from wastewater. The synthesized MGO@LaS adsorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The effective parameters on the adsorption process including solution pH (~5), adsorbent dosage (20 mg), contact time (40 min), initial Pb2+ concentration and temperature were studied. The removal efficiency was obtained >95% for lead ions at pH 5 with 20 mg adsorbent. To validate the adsorption rate and mechanism, the kinetic and thermodynamic models were studied based on experimental data. The Langmuir isotherm model was best fitted to initial equilibrium concentration with a maximum adsorption capacity of 123.46 mg/g. This indicated a monolayer adsorption pattern for Pb2+ ions over MGO@LaS. The pseudo-second-order as the kinetic model was best fitted to describe the adsorption rate due to high R2 > 0.999 as compared first-order. A thermodynamic model suggested a chemisorption and physisorption adsorption mechanism for Pb2+ ions uptake into MGO@LaS at different temperatures; ΔG° < -5.99 kJ mol-1 at 20 °C and ΔG° -18.2 kJ mol-1 at 45 °C. The obtained results showed that the novel nanocomposite (MGO@LaS) can be used as an alternative adsorbent in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Soil and water contaminations are caused by rare earth elements (REEs) due to mining and industrial activities, that threaten the ecosystem and human health. Therefore, phytoremediation methods need to be developed to overcome this problem. To date, little research has been conducted concerning the phytoremediation potential of Salix for REEs. In this study, two Salix species (Salix myrsinifolia and Salix schwerinii) and two Salix cultivars (Klara and Karin) were hydroponically exposed to different concentrations of six-REE for 4 weeks. The treatments were: T1 (Control: tap water), T2 (La: 50 mg/L) and T3 (La 11.50 + Y 11 + Nd 10.50 + Dy 10 + Ce 12 and Tb 11.50 in mg L-1). The effects of the REE on Salix growth indicators (height, biomass, shoot diameter and root length), concentrations of REE in the produced biomass, and accumulation of REE in different parts of the Salix (stem, root, and leaf) tissues, were determined. In addition, the retention of REE in ashes following Salix combustion (800 and 1000 °C) was determined. The result indicates that with La and REE exposure, the height growth, dry biomass, shoot diameter and root length of all Salix remained equivalent to the control treatment excluding Klara, which displayed relatively higher growth in all parameters. Further, among the REE studied, the highest La concentration (8404 μg g-1 DW) and La accumulation (10,548 μg plant-1) were observed in Karin and Klara root respectively. Translocations and bioconcentration factors were discovered at <1 for all Salix, which indicates their phytostabilization potential. The total REE concentrations in bottom ashes varied between 7 and 8% with retention rates between 85 and 89%. This study demonstrates that Salix are suitable candidates for REE phytostabilization and the remediation of wastewater sites to limit metals percolating to the water layers in the ecosystem.

Abstract
Soil samples from cut slopes from lightly loaded railway lines used by Diesel Multiple Units for 5 years in Gdansk (Poland) were collected and analyzed for trace metals (TMs): Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, Cu, and Fe. The main aim was to assess soil enrichment, contamination status, and distribution of TMs relative to the distance from the railway track. Extensive source tracking analyses were performed using cluster analysis (CA) and the Pb isotope ratios approach (206Pb, 207Pb, and 208Pb). Soil samples were affected by Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn (max values in mg/kg d.w.: 31.1, 145, 80.5, and 115, respectively). The Enrichment Factor showed moderate (Cr, Zn, Pb) to very severe (Cu) enrichment. CA allowed TMs to be divided into two general groups: a) containing Zn, Pb, Cd with slight interaction with Cu; and b) containing Fe and Ni with slight interaction with Cr. Correlation analyses indicated Cr as an outlying TM delivered from a separate source associated with the specificity of the construction of railroad 248, where alloys containing Cr were used to counteract increasing wear-and-tear of the rails. Pb isotopic ratios in the ranges of 1.16-1.20 (206Pb/207Pb) and 2.05-2.10 (208Pb/206Pb) corresponded to anthropogenic supplementation (coal combustion, road vehicles, and railroad transport) of Pb and Pb-correlated TMs (Zn, Cd, and partly Cu). Despite the research focus on the impact of the railroad contribution, a comparison with other forms of transport indicated that road transport appeared to have a higher contributing factor to TM pollution at the investigated site. This general conclusion again emphasizes the lower environmental footprint exhibited by railway transport in comparison to road transport.

Analysis of the microbiota in the diabetic foot

Abstract
Background: Complications of infected wounds in patients with diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) are one of the
greatest challenges in modern medicine. Analysis of the microbiological profile of infected
ulcers may significantly improve treatment results. The aim of the study was to determine the
profile of pathogens isolated in patients with DFU and to compare the results of other centers.
Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was carried out on 137 patients with DFU hospitalized at the Department
of Diabetology and Internal Diseases, Medical University of Warsaw in 2011-2014. The analysis
included the results of 200 microbiological cultures tested for fungi, aerobic and anaerobic
bacteria. Statistical analysis was used to test differences in HbA1c values in relation to the
strain of the most commonly cultured bacteria and the relationship between glycemic control
and most frequently isolated pathogens.
Results: Seventy-nine bacterial species were isolated in 183 positive cultures. Gram-negative bacteria
predominated with the highest percentage of representatives of Enterobacterales. The
most often isolated bacteria were Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis
and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus. The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed that
HbA1c concentrations were different in groups infected with different strains of bacteria
(p = 0.0087). Isolation of Escherichia coli and Morganella morganii was more often associated
with poor control of diabetes.
Conclusions: The study revealed statistically significant differences in the frequency of microorganisms
isolated from the wounds of patients with DFU. The discrepancies in the results of other
studies published in this field indicate the need for standardization of the research design.

Abstract
The study presents results from 6 months of phytoremediation of sediments dredged from three urban retention tanks carried out in a mesocosm setup with the use of P. australis. Two kinds of P. australis seedlings were considered: seedlings originating from natural (uncontaminated - Suncont) and anthropogenically changed environments (contaminated - Scont); this distinction was reflected in the baseline concentrations of trace metals inside their tissues. The potentially toxic elements (PTEs) considered in this study were as follows: Zn, Cu, Cd, Ni, Cr, and Pb. The aim of the study was to compare the uptake, accumulation, and translocation properties of seedlings with different initial trace metal contents. The PTE concentrations were analyzed in sediments as well as in belowground and aboveground parts of plants in the middle (3rd month) and at the end of the investigation period using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the accumulation of PTEs in plant tissues was calculated. Phytoextraction efficiency was evaluated using the bioconcentration factor (BF) and translocation factor (TF). Plant morphology was assessed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to document plant stress due to PTE exposure. The results of our study indicated that P. australis seedlings originating from sites differing in the initial trace metal content exhibited different behavior when grown on sediments dredged from urban retention tanks. Suncont seedlings with low initial metal contents tended to adapt to the dredged sediments and showed phytoextraction ability, while Scont seedlings originating from sites with initial high contents of trace metals acted as phytoexcluders and tended to release PTEs from their tissues into the sediments. The morphological and structural effects caused by metal toxicity were observed in growth limitation, root tissue disturbance, root hair number decrease, and structural alterations in the epidermis and endodermis. Therefore, the Suncont seedlings presented better properties and adaptability for phytoremediation purposes.

Abstract
The retention of heavy metal (HM) was studied in root and rhizomes (BLG), stems (ST), and leaves (LF) of Phragmites australis (common reed) seedlings collected from different locations, differing in the scale of anthropogenic interference. The analysis includes the reference samples of sediments in uncontaminated lake Garczonki and contaminated roadside ditch in Cieplewo. The concentrations of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Cr were analyzed in plant tissues and sediments using the atomic absorption spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The general assessment of sediments collected in the Garczonki lake showed a good environmental status; while in the roadside ditch in Cieplewo, the sediments were considerably polluted with HM. In the first stage of plant growth, all of the analyzed HMs are mainly inhibited by BLG system. The decreasing trend of elements was as follows: BLG > ST > LF. The organs followed different decreasing trends of HM concentration; the trend Zn > Cu > Ni > Cr > Pb > Cd was found in ST and LF for the Garczonki lake seedlings and for BLG and LF for the roadside ditch in Cieplewo seedlings. Zn showed the highest concentration, while Cd the lowest concentration in each of the examined organs. The bioaccumulation factor indicated the higher mobility of HM in seedlings in the Garczonki lake than in the roadside ditch in Cieplewo. The morphological studies suggest the good state and health of seedling from both sites; however, the reduction of root hair surface was observed for the roadside ditch seedlings. The anatomical studies present changes in the size of the nucleus and count of chloroplasts in LF. No reaction on HM contamination sediments in the seedlings from the roadside ditch in Cieplewo in the aerenchyma was noted. Potentially, both types of seedlings can be used to decontaminate environments rich in HM. However, the level of HM absorbed by seedlings (in the first stage of growth) should be considered due to the behavior in the target phytoremediation site.

Abstract
Background This paper analyzes the impact of changes in fertilization on crop yields and the runoff of nutrients from a small agricultural catchment (176 km2) to a shallow bay, using the SWAT model. Puck Bay is part of the Gulf of Gdansk and belongs to the Baltic Sea. The whole area of Puck Bay (364 km2) is protected (Natura 2000) yet despite this it suffers from eutrophication problems due to the relatively minimal depth and difficult water exchange. Methods The paper presents a comparison of the calculated yields and the runoff of nutrients and pesticides in the SWAT model, for a small agricultural coastal catchment. Calculations were made for 13 crop scenarios with weather data from 2011 to 2019. For each crop, an agriculture calendar was made. Two variants of fertilization were considered (autofertilization mode and according to the calendar). The nutrient runoff was calculated depending on the adopted scenario. In addition, the fate of selected pesticides was simulated. Results Depending on the crop, the annual load of NO3into the stream ranged from 0.74 to 3.65 kg ha-1. The annual load of organic phosphorous into the stream was between 0.686 and 3.64 kg ha-1. This is lower than in the majority of EU or Baltic countries. The surface runoff of dissolved Glyphosate was equal to 286 mg ha-1. The annual loads of nutrients from the catchment area are equivalent in both fertilization modes. Regardless of the selected fertilization mode, in addition to the dosage, the form of nutrients is important for the model.

Abstract
Diffuse pollution formed during a surface runoff on paved surfaces is a source of heavy metals (HMs) of various origin. This research study indicates the connection between bottom sediments of retention tanks located on urban streams and road sweeping wastes (RSW) that migrate during surface runoff to the stormwater drainage systems with discharge to the retention tanks. Moreover, we test the primary sources of HMs in RSW by analysing the mechanical wastes (MW) produced by vehicles in order to track the relationship between car parts and HMs deposited in the retention tanks receiving the surface runoff from streets. To identify the origin of HMs diverse source tracking approaches were used: statistical methods, Pb isotope ratios, and the flag element ratio approach. MW presented a very high HMs content (max observed values in mg/kg d.w.: 10477-Zn, 3512-Cu, 412-Pb, 3.35-Cd, 226-Ni, and 633-Cr), while for RSW the HMs content was similar to the bottom sediments. The total carcinogenic risk raises concerns due to the Cr content. The source of Zn was tyre wear and traffic. Ni, Cr, Fe, and Cd were correlated to Zn and shared a common/similar origin. PCA suggested that Cu features quasi-independent behaviour. The Pb isotopic ratios of RSW indicated Pb enrichment originating from coal combustion, while the gasoline and diesel source of Pb was excluded. The Pb isotopic ratios characteristic for MW were in within the following ranges: 1.152-1.165 (206Pb/207Pb), 2.050-2.085 (208Pb/206Pb), and 2.350-2.418 (208Pb/207Pb). The complex analysis of HMs origin confirmed the motorization origin of HMs: Zn, Cr, Ni, and Cd, except Pb (coal combustion as the main source) and Cu (non-uniform origin). The results of various source tracking methods were coherent, but Pb isotope ratios alone brought important information allowing to link Pb in sediments to the atmospheric deposition of coal combustion products.

Abstract
Concentrations of seven heavy metals (HMs): Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, and Fe in core samples of bottom sediments from four retention tanks (RTs) located along the Strzyza Stream in northern Poland (Gdansk) were measured to obtain a general view of sediment quality. The recognition of contamination and potential environmental impacts is the main aim of this paper. A total of 96 sediment samples were collected from eight sampling sites at depths of 0-2 cm, 8-10 cm, 16-18 cm, 24-26 cm. Concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Ni, and Cr were measured with AAS while Cd concentration was measured with ICP-MS. Granulometric analyses with normalized sieve apertures were carried out. Geochemical indices: enrichment factor, anthropogenic factor, and modified degree of contamination (mCd) were used to assess the contamination level. Concentrations of HMs in sediments changed in the range: Cu (3.24-119 mg/kg d.w.), Zn (12.5-584 mg/kg d.w.), Pb (4.91-309 mg/kg d.w.), Cd (0.003-0.716 mg/kg d.w.), Ni (1.57-25.8 mg/kg d.w.), Cr (2.45-74.5 mg/kg d.w.), and Fe (3993-63817 mg/kg d.w.). The sequential extraction verified the bonding of HMs with non-mobile fractions. Geochemical indices showed widespread pollution by Cu, Pb, Cd, and Zn. Cluster and factor analysis distinguished three related subgroups of HMs: Pb, Ni-Cr, and Fe-Cd-Cu-Zn, suggesting possible common source of each subgroup. Strongly contaminated sediments were distinguished in sediment cores in two middle stream RTs characterized by intense urbanization in their direct catchments.

Abstract
Diffuse sources of pollution like agricultural or urban runoff are important factors in determining the quality of surface waters, although they are more difficult to monitor than point sources. The objective of our study was to verify assumptions that the inflow from agricultural nutrient sources is higher than from urbanized ones. It has been done by comparing the nutrients and organic matter concentrations and loads for three small streams in northern Poland (Pomerania Region). Two streams flowing through agricultural catchments and an urban stream flowing through the city of Gdansk were analysed. Concentrations of nutrients: N-NO3 - N-NH4 + , P-PO4 3 - , total phosphorus, total nitrogen and COD were measured 1-3 times per month in the period from July 2017 to December 2018 in agricultural watersheds and from October 2016 to March 2018 for an urban stream. Seasonal changes in concentrations were analysed with descriptive statistics tools. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to point out the most significant factors determining variations in nutrients and organic matter concentrations with respect to different seasons. The factors included a number of characteristics regarding the catchment and streams: total catchment area, stream length, watershed form ratio, stream slope, flow rate and land use with respect to paved areas, agricultural areas and green areas (parks, forests, meadows and pastures). Although concentrations of nitrogen compounds were higher in streams flowing through agricultural areas, our study showed that total concentrations of phosphorus were higher in the urban stream, especially in summer. In agricultural areas the summer concentrations of nutrients were not high, which was probably due to dense vegetation. The correlation between P-PO4 3 - concentration and size of agricultural area in the catchment was observed in winter when no vegetation field cover exists. Our study shows an urgent need to monitor the nutrient loads carried with urban streams especially if discharged into receivers prone to eutrophication.

Abstract
Agriculture is the major contributor of waterborne nutrient fluxes into the Baltic Sea, one of the world's most eutrophication-sensitive areas. Poland, as a large, densely populated state ohf the Baltic Region, with dominating agricultural land use, largely contributes to riverborne loads of N and P. The aim of our study was to examine the input of nutrients from three small first-order agricultural watersheds (Bladzikowski Stream, Gizdepka river and Mrzezino canal) in the Pomerania region, into the Bay of Puck, inner part of the Gulf of Gdansk. This study attempts to give a partial answer as to the question if inputs of nutrients from the 3 analysed watersheds comply with the targets of the Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) and Country Allocated Reduction Targets (CART). The impact of agricultural practices was assessed on the basis of farm questionnaires and calculations of nutrient balances for the examined farms. The nutrient concentrations in the soil and drainage ditches were examined, followed by an assessment of nutrient concentrations in the watercourses at the sampling points located close to the estuaries. The average mineral N fertiliser consumption (109 kg N/ha) in the analysed watersheds was higher than Poland's average. The average N and P surpluses for surveyed farms (96.4 kg/ha and 4.4 kg/ha, respectively) were higher than the EU mean in case of N and markedly lower in case of P. We used Principal Component Analysis which confirmed that there were correlations between nutrient surpluses and nutrient concentrations in streams and/or drainage ditches. The N-NO3 and Pmin concentrations were also correlated to precipitation. The average N concentrations in the analysed watercourses were equal to 1.53 mg/L for Gizdepka, 1.88 mg/L for Mrzezino canal and 3.52 mg/L for Bładzikowski Stream. The mean P concentrations observed in the investigated watercourses were markedly higher than 0.1 mg/L. With regard to BSAP objectives, as well as CART set for Poland, the average nutrient concentrations in rivers should be approximately at the level of 2.5 mg N/L and 0.07 mg P/L.

Abstract
An 8 ha free water surface wetland system in Örebro, Sweden, which has sediment traps followed by 10 ponds for treatment of landfill leachate in the methanogenic stage, was studied from 2003 to 2012. The wetland was irregularly loaded and the leachate characteristics showed high temporal and spatial variability, so Multivariate Statistical Process Control was chosen as the diagnostic tool for detecting anomalies prior to assessing removal efficiency for eutrophying substances and organics. Disturbances in process behaviour included those due to intermittent flow, dilution due to snowmelt, an episode of high pollutant load, and sampling technique. The wetland total nitrogen mass removal was 89%, resulting in a first order rate coefficient of 1.7 m/year. Total phosphorus mass removal was 98%, while mass reduction was lower for TOC (60%), although this was still below discharge limits. The low amount of labile organic material and phosphate are probably the main reasons for the low denitrification rate.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) and its mobility and toxicity in the food chain receives considerable public and scientific attention. Levels in soil have been increasing, partly caused by mineral fertiliser use. In many areas in the EU, intake of Cd is not far from the maximum tolerable level. Now, urban and more circular approaches to food production are being promoted, in which waste materials substitute growing media and fertilizers. Can this make the situation worse, or is it, on the contrary, possible to extract Cd from the cycle using practical microbial methods? Cd concentration, availability and accumulation in materials and crops in a closed greenhouse system was investigated first. Secondly, we tested if fungal remediation was able to remove a significant amount of Cd. A sequential extraction analysis showed how anaerobic digestion and composting changed chemical Cd availability. Cd levels in the system were comparable to agricultural soils. The vegetable crops did not accumulate Cd. However, the culture of the edible mushroom Agaricus subrufescens in the greenhouse had a strong effect on Cd mobility: It extracted 80% of the Cd from the growing medium into the mushrooms, mostly at the start of fruiting. These early Cd enriched mushrooms can be treated as special waste, while the later harvest complied with EU Cd limits for foodstuffs and can potentially be consumed. Thus, growing this mushroom species in an integrated waste-to-crop system can be a cost-efficient way to remediate Cd from the food chain.

Abstract
Constructed wetlands have potential of treating wastewater of poor biodegradability. The performance of a multistage sub-surface flow wetland treating municipal landfill leachate was assessed during three years of operation. During the study three research periods with different operation conditions were established. The hydraulic loads, operation mode of vertical flow beds and type of treated wastewater (raw leachate - leachate mixed with municipal wastewater) were changed. Removal of organic matter and nitrogen species was evaluated in each period. The average COD removal efficiency varied from 47.8% to 86.6%. The average total nitrogen removal efficiencies were 98.5%, 68.9% and 79.6% in subsequent research periods. The main problem was too high concentration of recalcitrant organic matter. The labile organic matter was completely removed however the effluent COD remained on relatively high level. Depletion of labile organic matter also limited denitrification resulting in incomplete total nitrogen removal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Primary hyperaldosteronism may be associated with elevated 24-hour urinary potassium excretion. We evaluated the diagnostic value of spot urine (SU) potassium as an index of 24-hour urinary potassium excretion. METHODS We measured SU and 24-hour urinary collection potassium and creatinine in 382 patients. Correlations between SU and 24-hour collections were assessed for potassium levels and potassium/creatinine ratios. We used the PAHO formula to estimate 24-hour urinary potassium excretion based on SU potassium level. The agreement between estimated and measured 24-hour urinary potassium excretion was evaluated using the Bland-Altman method. To evaluate diagnostic performance of SU potassium, we calculated areas under the curve (AUC) for SU potassium/creatinine ratio and 24-hour urinary potassium excretion estimated using the PAHO formula. RESULTS Strongest correlation between SU and 24-hour collection was found for potassium/creatinine ratio (r = 0.69, P<0.001). The PAHO formula underestimated 24-hour urinary potassium excretion by mean 8.3±18 mmol/d (95% limits of agreement -28 to +44 mmol/d). Diagnostic performance of SU potassium/creatinine ratio was borderline good only if 24-hour urinary potassium excretion was largely elevated (AUC 0.802 for 120 mmol K+/24 h) but poor with lower values (AUC 0.696 for 100 mmol K+/24 h, 0.636 for 80 mmol K+/24 h, 0.675 for 40 mmol K+/24 h). Diagnostic performance of 24-hour urinary potassium excretion estimated by the PAHO formula was excellent with values above 120 mmol/d and good with lower values (AUC 0.941 for 120 mmol K+/24 h, 0.819 for 100 mmol K+/24 h, 0.823 for 80 mmol K+/24 h, 0.836 for 40 mmol K+/24 h). CONCLUSIONS Spot urine potassium/creatinine ratio might be a marker of increased 24-hour urinary potassium excretion and a potentially useful screening test when reliable 24-hour urine collection is not available. The PAHO formula allowed estimation of the 24-hour urinary potassium excretion based on SU measurements with reasonable clinical accuracy.

Abstract
Idiopathic infantile hypercalcemia (IIH) is a mineral metabolism disorder characterized by severe hypercalcemia, failure to thrive, vomiting, dehydration, and nephrocalcinosis. The periodical increase in incidence of IIH, which occurred in the twentieth century in the United Kingdom, Poland, and West Germany, turned out to be a side effect of rickets over-prophylaxis. It was recently discovered that the condition is linked to two genes, CYP24A1 and SLC34A1. The aim of the study was to search for pathogenic variants of the genes in adult persons who were shortlisted in infancy as IIH caused by “hypersensitivity to vit. D”. All persons were found to carry mutations in CYP24A1 or SLC34A1, nine and two persons respectively. The changes were biallelic, with one exception. Incidence of IIH in Polish population estimated on the basis of allele frequency of recurrent p.R396W CYP24A1 variant, is 1:32,465 births. It indicates that at least a thousand homozygotes and compound heterozygotes with risk of IIH live in the country. Differences in mechanism of developing hypercalcemia indicate that its prevention may vary in both IIH defects. Theoretically, vit. D restriction is a first indication for CYP24A1 defect (which disturbs 1,25(OH)2D degradation) and phosphate supplementation for SLC34A1 defect (which impairs renal phosphate transport). In conclusion, we suggest that molecular testing for CYP24A1 and SLC34A1 mutations should be performed in each case of idiopathic hypercalcemia/hypercalciuria, both in children and adults, to determine the proper way for acute treatment and complications prevention.

Abstract
The paper presents the effects of applying subsurface vertical flow constructed wetlands (SS VF) for the treatment of reject water generated in the process of aerobic sewage sludge stabilization in the biggest dairy wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Poland. Two SS VF beds were built: bed (A) with 0.65 m depth and bed (B) with 1.0 m depth, planted with reeds. Beds were fed with reject water with hydraulic load of 0.1 m d-1 in order to establish the differences in treatment efficiency. During an eight-months research period, a high removal efficiency of predominant pollutants was shown: BOD5 88.1% (A) and 90.5% (B); COD 84.5% (A) and 87.5% (B); TSS 87.6% (A) and 91.9% (B); TKN 82.4% (A) and 76.5% (B); N-NH4+ 89.2% (A) and 85.7% (B); TP 30.2% (A) and 40.6% (B). There were not statistically significant differences in the removal efficiencies between bed (B) with 1.0 m depth and bed (A) with 0.65 m depth. The research indicated that SS VF beds could be successfully applied to reject water treatment in dairy WWTPs. The study proved that the use of SS VF beds in full scale in dairy WWTPs would result in a significant decrease in pollutants' load in reject water. In the analyzed case, decreasing the load of ammonia nitrogen was of greatest importance, as it constituted 58% of the total load treated in dairy WWTP and posed a hazard to the stability of the treatment process.

Abstract
At urban locations certain challenges are concentrated: organic waste production, the need for waste treatment, energy demand, food demand, the need for circular economy and limited area for food production. Based on these factors the project presented here developed a novel technological approach for processing organic waste into new food. In this system, organic waste is converted into biogas and digester residue. The digester residue is being used successfully as a stand-alone fertilizer as well as main substrate component for vegetables and mushrooms for the first time - a "digeponics" system - in a closed new low energy greenhouse system with dynamic soap bubble insulation. Biogas production provides energy for the process and CO2 for the greenhouse. With very limited land use highly efficient resource recycling was established at pilot scale. In the research project it was proven that a low energy dynamic bubble insulated greenhouse can be operated continuously with 80% energy demand reduction compared to conventional greenhouses. Commercial crop yields were achieved based on fertilization with digestate; in individual cases they were even higher than the control yields of vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce among others. For the first time an efficient direct use of digestate as substrate and fertilizer has been developed and demonstrated.

Abstract
Four bioassays were used in this study for the hazard assessment of sediments from sediment traps and several ponds in a treatment wetland for landfill leachate at Atleverket, Sweden. In the 6-day solid phase microbiotest with the sediment-dwelling crustacean Heterocypris incongruens both acute and chronic effects were observed with a gradual decrease and loss of toxicity with treatment in the wetland system. Some samples showed a low toxicity in porewater and only one sample was weakly toxic in the whole sediment test when assessed with Aliivibrio fischeri (Vibro fischeri). No genotoxicity was detected in the umu test. The toxicity response in the H4IIE- luc test evaluating the presence of dioxin-like compounds was considerably higher in the samples from the sediment traps. The hazard of the sediment therefore appears to be highest in the sediment traps and pond 1 with the methods employed. The result indicates that the wetland system has a design supporting the concentration and sequestration of toxic substances in the first part of the wetland. Based upon the results we suggest that hazard assessment of sediments from other treatment wetlands for landfill leachate should be conducted.

Abstract
The retention of heavy metals at two pilot-scale treatment wetlands (TWs), consisting of two vertical flow beds (VSSF) followed by a horizontal flow bed (HSSF) was studied. The TWs received high-strength wastewater: reject waters from sewage sludge centrifugation (RW) and landfill leachate (LL). The concentrations of the metals Fe, Mn, Zn, Al, Pb, Cu, Cd, Co, and Ni were measured in treated wastewater, substrate of the beds and in plant material harvested from the beds (separately in above ground (ABG) parts and below ground (BG) parts). The TWs differed in metals retention. In the RW treating TW the metal removal efficiencies varied from 27% for Pb to over 97% for Fe and Al. In the LL treating system the concentrations of most metals decreased after VSSF-1 and VSSF-2 beds; however, in the outflow from the last (HSSF) bed, the concentrations of metals (apart from Al) increased again, probably due to the anaerobic conditions at the bed. A major removal pathway was sedimentation and adsorption onto soil substrate as well as precipitation and co-precipitation. In the LL treating facility the plants contained substantially higher metal concentrations in BG parts, while the upward movement of metals was restricted. In the RW treating facility the BG/ABG ratios were lower, indicating that metals were transported to shoots.

Abstract
The objective of the study was assessment of occurrence and removal of two groups of persistent organic pollutants: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in landfill leachate (LL) treated in three constructed wetland systems (CWs) of different construction and flow regime. Two subsurface flow systems (SSF) were analyzed: one with horizontal flow and the second one consisting of two vertical flow beds followed by a horizontal flow bed. The third CW was a surface flow (SF) system, consisting of 10 ponds connected in series. The concentrations of 12 PAHs and 7 PCBs were measured in the samples of LL after subsequent treatment stages and in the sediment samples from the SF system as well as in the substrate samples from the SSF flow systems. It was confirmed that the major mechanism of PCB and PAH removal in CW systems was adsorption to the bottom sediments (in the SF system) or substrate of the beds (in the SSF systems) as well as adsorption to suspended solids, followed by sedimentation. The compounds characterized by higher octanol/water partition coefficient were more effectively retained in the sediments. Also removal of these substances occurred in the earlier stages of treatment.

Abstract
The results of heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cu, Cr, Pb, Cd) removal and partitioning between aqueous and solid phases at two treatment wetlands (TWs) treating municipal landfill leachates are presented. One of the TWs is a surface flow facility consisting of 10 ponds. The other TW is a newly constructed pilot-scale facility consisting of three beds with alternately vertical and horizontal subsurface flow. The metals concentrations were analysed in leachate (both TWs) and bottom sediments (surface flow TW). Very high (90.9-99.9%) removal rates of metals were observed in a mature surface flow TW. The effectiveness of metals removal in a newly constructed pilot-scale sub-surface flow wetland were considerably lower (range 0-73%). This is attributed to young age of the TW, different hydraulic conditions (sub-surface flow system with much shorter retention time, unoxic conditions) and presence of metallic complexes with refractory organic matter.

Abstract
This article describes Norwegian and Polish experiences concerning domestic wastewater treatment obtained during nearly 20 years of operation for constructed wetland (CW) systems in rural areas and scattered settlements. The Norwegian CW systems revealed a high performance with respect to the removal of organic matter, biogenic elements and faecal indicator bacteria. The performance of the Polish CW systems was unstable, and varied between unsatisfied and satisfied treatment efficiency provided by horizontal and vertical flow CWs, respectively. Therefore, three different concepts related to the improvement of CW technology have been developed and implemented in Poland. These concepts combined some innovative solutions originally designed in Norway (e.g. an additional treatment step in biofilters) with Polish inspiration for new CWs treating rural domestic wastewater. The implementation of full-scale systems will be evaluated with regard to treatment efficiency and innovative technology; based on this, a further selection of the most favourable CW for rural areas and scattered settlements will be performed.

Abstract
The study aimed to analyse the clinical courses of aggressively treated neonates with cytogenetically confirmed trisomy 18, with special attention focused on the efficiency of prenatal diagnostics, associated malformations, therapeutic dilemmas and outcomes. We investigated retrospectively the data concerning 20 neonates with trisomy 18, admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Katowice between January 2000 and February 2005. Their birth weights ranged from 650 g to 2400 g, mean 1812 g; gestational age ranged from 27 to 42 weeks, median 38 weeks. Intrauterine growth retardation was noticed in 90% of neonates. Trisomy 18 was suspected prenatally in 40% of cases. Most (80%) of newborns were delivered by caesarean section (92% of neonates with prenatally unrecognized chromosomal defects, 62% of neonates with trisomy 18 suspicion) and 70% of infants needed respiratory support immediately after birth. Cardiac defects were present in 95%, central nervous system malformations in 65%, severe anomalies of digestive system or abdominal wall in 25% of patients. Nine surgical operations were performed during hospitalization (4 were palliative cardiac surgeries). Six patients (30%) survived the neonatal period and were discharged from the NICU. The median survival of the neonates who died was 20 days. In 4 cases cardiac problems implicated their death; in others, deaths were attributed to multiorgan failure, prematurity and/or infection. Further improvement of efficiency of prenatal ultrasound screening for diagnosis of trisomy 18 in the fetus is necessary. A lack of prenatal diagnosis of trisomy 18 in the fetus results in a high rate of unnecessary caesarean sections in these pregnancies. Despite the aggressive treatment most neonates with trisomy 18 died during the neonatal period. The majority of deaths were attributed to cardiorespiratory and multiorgan failure. Concerning the poor prognosis, prompt karyotyping (using FISH) of clinically suspected trisomy 18 is very important, because many invasive procedures and surgeries may then be avoided.

Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of the study was to analyze prenatally recognized cases of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) and further follow-up. We report the most common features which can help in prenatal diagnosing of that condition. MATERIAL AND METHODS 3 fetuses diagnosed with BWS, referred for echocardiographic evaluation had been examined in referral centre from 2003-2005. RESULTS Mean gestational age at the diagnosis was 31 week. During ultrasound evaluation characteristic features were recognized: macrosomy, macroglossia, nephromegaly in all cases, polyhydramnion was associated in 2 cases. No congenital heart defect and any functional changes were found during ECHO. In one case prenatal karyotyping was performed and revealed normal karyotype. Postnatal karyotyping in remain two cases was normal in one and abnormal in second case (Moz 46XX (13/46XX-18, +MAR5). CONCLUSIONS 1. Prenatal diagnosis of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome can be obtained based on characteristic ultrasound features in the third trimester. 2. Most common features of BWS diagnosed in prenatal ultrasound included: macrosomy, macroglossia, visceromegaly and polyhydramnios. 3. In utero diagnosis is important for further mode and time of delivery planning, also neonates' clinical condition directly after delivery and long-term postnatal prognosis. 4. Karyotyping is recommened in all cases of BWS.

Abstract
The article focuses on the effect of microwave treatment on the de-waterability of sewage sludge. The specific resistance to filtration, capillary suction time, and dry matter content in centrifuged sludge cake were measured. The quality of sludge liquor obtained after microwave processing was also analysed. It was found out that microwaves improve sludge de-waterability. The quantitative improvement depends on sludge type-better effect of microwave processing were observed in the primary sludge compared to mixed or digested sludges. If microwave treatment is followed by polyelectrolyte conditioning, the effects are considerably better than while these conditioning methods are used separately. Microwave conditioning increased burden of organic matter (BOD(5), COD) in the sludge liquor.

Abstract
The aim of the paper was to describe dynamic changes in 'pump twin's' circulatory system within clinical observation, indication analysis for premature delivery due to cardiovascular findings and long-term postnatal follow up. In echocardiographic examination of 'pump twin' no structural heart defects but functional changes in cardiovascular system have been detected (cardiomegaly, right heart disproportion, tricuspid valve regurgitation). Within 10-week observation polyhydramnios did not increased significantly, no amnioreduction procedures had been performed. Due to single umbilical artery in 'pump twin' a cytogenetic examination had been performed revealing a normal karyotype. When the first signs of abnormal Doppler flows appeared such as increased PI of umbilical artery and DV and cardiomegaly with TR--caesarean section was performed at 33 weeks of gestation. Echocardiography performed in the first day of life findings: right atrium and ventricle enlargement, significant tricuspid valve regurgitation (V max 3 m/s), a prenatally undetected, small perimembrane-part ventricular septal defect. At the age of 6-months a non-significant VSD with tricuspid valve septal leaflet closure and ASD II has been confirmed. The infant is systematically followed-up by paediatricians, cardiologists and neurologists and her further neurodevelopment appears to be slightly retarded.

Abstract
The goal of our study was to assess suitability of FNA biopsy material as a source of samples (cell suspension) for DNA ploidy assessment in neoplastic tumors using flow cytometry. DNA ploidy is an established prognostic factor in many types of cancers. Aneuploid breast tumors are characterized by increased aggressiveness which manifests itself through rapid local progression and metastatic spread. Investigated specimens were breast cancer FNA biopsy cell suspensions. Measurements were performed using flow cytometry. Material studied comprised 143 cases analyzed in 1999-2000. We found in this group 101 carcinoma cases with aneuploid type and 42 cases of primary breast carcinoma with diploid type of cell cycle. Immunocytochemical assesssment of estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor status was performed in group of 105 cases. DNA ploidy was compared to receptor status of the investigated cells. DNA aneuploidy correlated with weak or no reaction for the presence of estrogen and progesterone receptors. Our study demonstrates the suitability of DNA ploidy assessment method applied to cytological material from FNA biopsies.
