Abstract
High-precision searches for an electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) require stable and uniform magnetic field environments. We present the recent achievements of degaussing and equilibrating the magnetically shielded room (MSR) for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. We present the final degaussing configuration that will be used for n2EDM after numerous studies. The optimized procedure results in a residual magnetic field that has been reduced by a factor of two. The ultra-low field is achieved with the full magnetic-field-coil system, and a large vacuum vessel installed, both in the MSR. In the inner volume of ∼ 1.4 m 3 , the field is now more uniform and below 300 pT. In addition, the procedure is faster and dissipates less heat into the magnetic environment, which in turn, reduces its thermal relaxation time from 12 h down to 1.5 h .

Abstract
Various theories beyond the Standard Model predict new particles with masses in the sub-eV range with very weak couplings to ordinary matter. A new P-odd and T-odd interaction between polarized and unpolarized nucleons proportional to s⃗⋅r̂ is one such possibility, where r⃗=rr̂ is the spatial vector connecting the nucleons, and s⃗ is the spin of the polarized nucleon. Such an interaction involving a scalar coupling gsN at one vertex and a pseudoscalar coupling gpn at the polarized nucleon vertex can be induced by the exchange of spin-0 pseudoscalar bosons. We describe a new technique to search for interactions of this form and present the first measurements of this type. We show that future improvements to this technique can improve the laboratory upper bound on the product gsNgpn by two orders of magnitude for interaction ranges at the 100 micron scale.

Abstract
Spin-crossover (SCO) compounds are promising materials for a wide variety of industrial applications. However, the fundamental understanding of their nature of transition and its effect on the physical properties are still being fervently explored; the microscopic knowledge of their transition is essential for tailoring their properties. Here an attempt is made to correlate the changes in macroscopic physical properties with microscopic structural changes in the orthorhombic and monoclinic polymorphs of the SCO compound Fe(PM-Bia)2(NCS)2 (PM = N-2'-pyridylmethylene and Bia = 4-aminobiphenyl) by employing single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetization and DSC measurements. The dependence of macroscopic properties on cooperativity, highlighting the role of hydrogen bonding, π-π and van der Waals interactions is discussed. Values of entropy, enthalpy and cooperativity are calculated numerically based on the Slichter-Drickamer model. The particle size dependence of the magnetic properties is probed along with the thermal exchange and the kinetic behavior of the two polymorphs based on the dependence of magnetization on temperature scan rate and a theoretical model is proposed for the calculation of the non-equilibrium spin-phase fraction. Also a scan-rate-dependent two-step behavior observed for the orthorhombic polymorph, which is absent for the monoclinic polymorph, is reported. Moreover, it is found that the radiation dose from synchrotron radiation affects the spin-crossover process and shifts the transition region to lower temperatures, implying that the spin crossover can be tuned with radiation damage.

Abstract
We present the design of a next-generation experiment, n2EDM, currently under construction at the ultracold neutron source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) with the aim of carrying out a high-precision search for an electric dipole moment of the neutron. The project builds on experience gained with the previous apparatus operated at PSI until 2017, and is expected to deliver an order of magnitude better sensitivity with provision for further substantial improvements. An overview is of the experimental method and setup is given, the sensitivity requirements for the apparatus are derived, and its technical design is described.

Background
Shear wave (SW) imaging, based on high frame rate (HFR) echocardiography, is a new non-invasive approach for assessing myocardial stiffness. Operating myocardial stiffness increases with increasing wall stress, therefore measured myocardial stiffness does not necessarily reflect intrinsic myocardial properties only, but can be influenced by cavity pressure and chamber geometry.
Purpose
To explore the relationship between local myocardial geometry, cavity pressure and pathological substrate with SW velocity and to determine to which extent the above mentioned factors influence SW velocity.
Methods
We included 26 healthy controls (55 ± 14 years, 77 % male) and 61 patients with thick heart (24 patients with cardiac amyloidosis (AML) [70 ± 9 years, 52 % male], 37 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) [54 ± 14 years, 78 % male]). Left ventricular (LV) parasternal long axis views were acquired with an experimental HFR scanner at 1142 ± 282 frames per seconds. Propagation velocity of the SW occurring after mitral valve closure in the interventricular septum (IVS) served as measure of myocardial stiffness (Figure A). While conventional echocardiographic measurements were used to evaluate local myocardial geometry (LV end-diastolic diameter [EDD], IVS thickness) and LV cavity pressure (LV diastolic pressure-estimated by E/e` and LV systolic pressure-estimated by systolic blood pressure and potential LV outflow gradient in HCM).

LV cavity pressure and local geometry differed significantly between controls and patients (p < 0.05, for all, Figure B). SW velocity correlated with cavity pressure (E/e`: r = 0.375, p < 0.001, LV systolic pressure: r = 0.264, p = 0.020) and local geometry (IVS thickness: r = 0.700, p < 0.001; EDD: r=-0.307, p = 0.007) and differed significantly among groups (Figure C). Multivariate analysis revealed that SW velocity was independently related only with the pathological substrate and IVS thickness (p = 0.006 and p < 0.001, respectively). In a regression model, the pathological substrate, cavity pressure and local geometry accounted for 56% of variation in SW velocity (p < 0.001), while the pathological substrate alone accounted for nearly half of the variance (R2 = 0.44, p < 0.001) (Figure D).
Conclusions
Our study demonstrated that SW velocity is related to both pathological substrate and local geometry and LV pressures. Additionally, our results suggest that variations in myocardial tissue properties had the most influence on SW velocity, while LV pressure and local geometry played a minor role. Therefore, the changes in SW velocity reflect predominantly tissue properties that are altered by underlining disease rather than cavity pressure and morphological abnormalities. Thus, SW elastography could provide useful novel diagnostic information in the evaluation of cardiomyopathies.

Abstract
The ability to create atomically perfect, epitaxial heterostructures of correlated complex perovskite oxides using state-of-art thin film deposition techniques has generated new physical phenomena at engineered interfaces. Here we report on the impact of growth kinetics on the magnetic structure and exchange coupling at the interface in heterostructures combining layers of antiferromagnetic La1/3Sr2/3FeO3 (LSFO) and ferromagnetic La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) on (0 0 1)-oriented SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. Two growth orders are investigated, (a) LSMO/LSFO/STO(0 0 1) and (b) LSFO/LSMO/STO(0 0 1), where the LSFO layer is grown by molecular beam epitaxy and the LSMO layer by high oxygen pressure sputtering. The interface has been investigated using electron microscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry. Interdiffusion over seven monolayers is observed in LSMO/LSFO (a) with an almost 50% reduction in magnetization at the interface and showing no exchange coupling. However, the exchange bias effect ([Formula: see text] mT at 10 K) could be realized when the interface is atomically sharp, as in LSFO/LSMO (b). Our study therefore reveals that, even for well ordered and lattice-matched structures, the kinetics involved in the growth processes drastically influences the interface quality with a strong correlation to the magnetic properties.

Abstract
We present the result of an experiment to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute using Ramsey's method of separated oscillating magnetic fields with ultracold neutrons. Our measurement stands in the long history of EDM experiments probing physics violating time-reversal invariance. The salient features of this experiment were the use of a ^{199}Hg comagnetometer and an array of optically pumped cesium vapor magnetometers to cancel and correct for magnetic-field changes. The statistical analysis was performed on blinded datasets by two separate groups, while the estimation of systematic effects profited from an unprecedented knowledge of the magnetic field. The measured value of the neutron EDM is d_{n}=(0.0±1.1_{stat}±0.2_{sys})×10^{-26} e.cm.

Abstract
We report on the strategy used to optimize the sensitivity of our search for a neutron electric dipole moment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Measurements were made upon ultracold neutrons stored within a single chamber at the heart of our apparatus. A mercury cohabiting magnetometer together with an array of cesium magnetometers were used to monitor the magnetic field, which was controlled and shaped by a series of precision field coils. In addition to details of the setup itself, we describe the chosen path to realize an appropriate balance between achieving the highest statistical sensitivity alongside the necessary control on systematic effects. The resulting irreducible sensitivity is better than 1 × 10−26e cm. This contribution summarizes in a single coherent picture the results of the most recent publications of the collaboration.

Abstract
We present the new spectrometer for the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) search at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), called n2EDM. The setup is at room temperature in vacuum using ultracold neutrons. n2EDM features a large UCN double storage chamber design with neutron transport adapted to the PSI UCN source. The design builds on experience gained from the previous apparatus operated at PSI until 2017. An order of magnitude increase in sensitivity is calculated for the new baseline setup based on scalable results from the previous apparatus, and the UCN source performance achieved in 2016.

Abstract
We report results of a new technique to measure the electric dipole moment of ^{129}Xe with ^{3}He comagnetometry. Both species are polarized using spin-exchange optical pumping, transferred to a measurement cell, and transported into a magnetically shielded room, where SQUID magnetometers detect free precession in applied electric and magnetic fields. The result from a one week measurement campaign in 2017 and a 2.5 week campaign in 2018, combined with detailed study of systematic effects, is d_{A}(^{129}Xe)=(1.4±6.6_{stat}±2.0_{syst})×10^{-28} e cm. This corresponds to an upper limit of |d_{A}(^{129}Xe)|<1.4×10^{-27} e cm (95% C.L.), a factor of 5 more sensitive than the limit set in 2001.

Abstract
We report on an optically pumped magnetometer that uses multiple laser beams to pump and probe spin-polarized Cs atoms. The selected sensor geometry allows for operation in finite magnetic fields as well as close to zero field. In finite fields the magnetometer employs free spin precession signals to determine the field modulus and direction as described in a separate publication. This publication focuses on the magnetometer operation close to zero field, which is based on a ground state Hanle resonance. The four laser beams permit the simultaneous measurement of two orthogonal magnetic field components in a differential detection scheme that greatly suppresses technical laser power noise. Sensitivities better than 54 fT/Hz1/2 could be demonstrated simultaneously for both measurement channels in a well shielded environment. A minimum Allan deviation, limited by residual field fluctuations, of better than 40 fT was observed for integration times of 2s. The magnetometer achieves high sensitivity and stability in offset fields as well as close to zero field and is, thus, a universal tool for low frequency magnetic field measurements.

Abstract
We report a comprehensive specific heat and inelastic neutron scattering study to explore the possible origin of multiferroicity in HoCrO3. We have performed specific heat measurements in the temperature range 100 mK-290 K and inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed in the temperature range 1.5-200 K. From the specific heat data we determined hyperfine splitting at 22.5(2) μeV and crystal field transitions at 1.379(5) meV, 10.37(4) meV, 15.49(9) meV and 23.44(9) meV, indicating the existence of strong hyperfine and crystal field interactions in HoCrO3. Further, an effective hyperfine field is determined to be 600(3) T. The quasielastic scattering observed in the inelastic scattering data and a large linear term [Formula: see text] mJ mol(-1) K(-2) in the specific heat is attributed to the presence of short range exchange interactions, which is understood to be contributing to the observed ferroelectricity. Further the nuclear and magnetic entropies were computed to be, ∼17.2 Jmol(-1) K(-1) and ∼34 Jmol(-1) K(-1), respectively. The entropy values are in excellent agreement with the limiting theoretical values. An anomaly is observed in the peak position of the temperature dependent crystal field spectra around 60 K, at the same temperature an anomaly in the pyroelectric current is reported. From this we could elucidate a direct correlation between the crystal electric field excitations of Ho(3+) and ferroelectricity in HoCrO3. Our present study, along with recent reports, confirm that HoCrO3, and RCrO3 (R = rare earth) in general, possess more than one driving force for the ferroelectricity and multiferroicity.

Abstract
Several experiments in fundamental physics demand an environment of very low, homogeneous, and stable magnetic fields. For the magnetic characterization of such environments, we present a portable SQUID system that measures the absolute magnetic flux density vector and the gradient tensor. This vector-tensor system contains 13 integrated low-critical temperature (LTc) superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) inside a small cylindrical liquid helium Dewar with a height of 31 cm and 37 cm in diameter. The achievable resolution depends on the flux density of the field under investigation and its temporal drift. Inside a seven-layer mu-metal shield, an accuracy better than ±23 pT for the components of the static magnetic field vector and ±2 pT/cm for each of the nine components of the gradient tensor is reached by using the shifting method.

Abstract
Antinuclear autoantibodies (ANA) are highly informative biomarkers in autoimmune diagnostics. The increasing demand for effective test systems, however, has led to the development of a confusingly large variety of different platforms. One of them, the indirect immunofluorescence (IIF), is regarded as the common gold standard for ANA screening, as described in a position statement by the American College of Rheumatology in 2009. Technological solutions have been developed aimed at standardization and automation of IIF to overcome methodological limitations and subjective bias in IIF interpretation. In this review, we present the EUROPattern Suite, a system for computer-aided immunofluorescence microscopy (CAIFM) including automated acquisition of digital images and evaluation of IIF results. The system was originally designed for ANA diagnostics on human epithelial cells, but its applications have been extended with the latest system update version 1.5 to the analysis of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) and anti-dsDNA antibodies.

Abstract
Retinal glial (Müller) cells release ATP upon osmotic stress or activation of metabotropic glutamate receptors. ATP inhibits the osmotic Müller cell swelling by activation of P2Y1 receptors. In the present study, we determined the molecular pathways of the ATP release from Müller cells in slices of the rat retina. Administration of the ATP/ADPase apyrase induced a swelling of Müller cells under hypoosmotic conditions, and prevented the swelling-inhibitory effect of glutamate, suggesting that swelling inhibition is mediated by extracellular ATP. A hypoosmotic swelling of Müller cells was also observed in the presence of a blocker of multidrug resistance channels (MK-571), a CFTR inhibitor (glibenclamide), and connexin hemichannel blockers (18-α-glycyrrhetinic acid, 100 µM carbenoxolone). The swelling-inhibitory effect of glutamate was prevented by MK-571, the connexin hemichannel blockers, and a pannexin-1 hemichannel blocker (5 µM carbenoxolone). The p-glycoprotein blocker verapamil had no effect. As revealed by single-cell RT-PCR, subpopulations of Müller cells expressed mRNAs for pannexin-1 and -2, and connexins 30, 30.3, 32, 43, 45, and 46. The data may suggest that rat Müller cells release ATP by multidrug resistance channels, CFTR, and connexin hemichannels in response to osmotic stress, while glutamate induces a release of ATP via multidrug resistance channels, connexin hemichannels, and pannexin-1.

Abstract
A versatile and portable magnetically shielded room with a field of (700 ± 200) pT within a central volume of 1 m × 1 m × 1 m and a field gradient less than 300 pT/m, achieved without any external field stabilization or compensation, is described. This performance represents more than a hundredfold improvement of the state of the art for a two-layer magnetic shield and provides an environment suitable for a next generation of precision experiments in fundamental physics at low energies; in particular, searches for electric dipole moments of fundamental systems and tests of Lorentz-invariance based on spin-precession experiments. Studies of the residual fields and their sources enable improved design of future ultra-low gradient environments and experimental apparatus. This has implications for developments of magnetometry beyond the femto-Tesla scale in, for example, biomagnetism, geosciences, and security applications and in general low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements.

Abstract

Abstract
Spent mushroom compost (SMC), a byproduct of commercial mushroom cultivation, poses serious environmental problems that have hampered the growth of this important agro-industry. In an effort to develop new applications for SMC, we explored its use as a feedstock for bioethanol production. SMC constitutes approximately 30%w/w polysaccharides, 66% of which is glucan. Following dilute-acid pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis, both in the presence of PEG 6000, 97% of glucan and 44% of xylan in SMC were converted into the corresponding monosaccharides. Incorporation of PEG 6000 reduced the cellulase requirement by 77%. Zwittergent 3-12 and 3-14 also significantly increased the efficacy of acid pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. The use of SMC in bioethanol production represents a potential mitigation solution for the critical environmental issues associated with the stockpiling of the major byproduct of the mushroom industry.

Abstract
Beef and dairy cattle represent divergent metabolic types that disseminate nutrients into either meat or milk and differ in nutrient accretion. To investigate nutrient flow and turnover in an animal model combining beef and dairy cattle, a crossbred experiment has been started. An F(2) resource population was generated from Charolais (beef breed) sires and German Holstein (dairy breed) cows as P(0) founders by consistent use of embryo transfer to establish the F(1) and F(2) generations, which accordingly comprised half- and full-sib offspring. In 64 bulls of 5F(2) families, dry matter intake and growth performance were measured monthly, and carcass composition was determined after slaughtering at 18 mo of age. Energy expenditure and urea kinetics were investigated via stable isotope tracer techniques using an intravenous single bolus dose of sodium [(13)C]bicarbonate [2.5 μmol/kg of body weight (BW), 99 atom% (13)C] at 8 and 18 mo of age and of [(15)N]urea (0.28 mg/kg of BW, 99 atom% (15)N) at 8 mo of age, respectively. Insulin responses were measured via glucose tolerances tests at the age of 8 mo. The results revealed significant differences between families for growth performance, energy expenditure, and urea kinetics. In summary, low energy expenditure was associated with high average body mass gain and high insulin response. A greater urea loss was associated with reduced muscle protein in carcass. In addition, corresponding half-sib and full-sib sisters from bulls with highest growth rate indicated highest milk production. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that differences in energy expenditure and urea kinetics result in differences in average daily gain and carcass traits and vice versa in F(2) crossbred bulls with common beef and dairy genetic backgrounds.
