Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic pruritus (CP) is a subjective symptom, and it is necessary to assess its intensity with validated patient-reported outcome tools in order to allow determination of the treatment course. OBJECTIVES So far, the itch intensity scales were validated in small cohorts and in single languages. Here, we report the validation of the numerical rating scale, the verbal rating scale and the visual analogue scale for the worst and average pruritus intensity in the last 24h in several languages across Europe and across different pruritic dermatoses. METHODS After professional translation, the intensity scales were digitized for use as a tablet computer application. Validation was performed in clinics for Dermatology in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey. RESULTS A total of 547 patients with contact dermatitis, chronic nodular prurigo, psoriasis vulgaris, lichen planus or cutaneous T-cell lymphoma were included. The intensity scales showed a high level of reproducibility and inter-correlations with each other. The correlation with the Dermatology Life Quality Index was weak to strong in nearly all countries and dermatoses with the exception of France and patients with chronic nodular prurigo, for which no statistically significant correlations were found. CONCLUSIONS The numerical rating scale, the verbal rating scale und the visual analogue scales are valid instruments with good reproducibility and internal consistency in German (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), French, Italian, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Turkish for different pruritic dermatoses. VAS worst was the best reproducible and consistent measuring instrument in all countries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic nodular prurigo (CNPG) is a condition characterized by chronic itch, a prolonged scratching behaviour and the presence of pruriginous nodules. A comprehensive understanding of this condition, especially regarding its clinical characteristics and impact on quality of life is still lacking. OBJECTIVES Aim of this pan-European multicentre cross-sectional study was to establish the clinical profile of CNPG, including its associated burden. METHODS Fifteen centres from 12 European countries recruited CNPG patients presenting at the centre or using the centres' own databases. Patients were asked to complete a questionnaire in paper or electronic format. Demography, current co-morbidities, underlying disease, itch intensity, additional sensory symptoms, quality of life, highest burden and emotional experience of itch were assessed. RESULTS A total of 509 patients (210 male, median age: 64 years [52; 72]) were enrolled. Of these, 406 reported itch and CNPG lesions in the previous 7 days and qualified to complete the whole questionnaire. We recorded moderate to severe worst itch intensity scores in the previous 24 h. Scores were higher in patients with lower educational levels and those coming from Eastern or Southern Europe. Most patients experience itch often or always (71%) and report that their everyday life is negatively affected (53%). Itch intensity was considered to be the most burdensome aspect of the disease by 49% of the patients, followed by the visibility of skin lesions (21%) and bleeding of lesions (21%). The majority of patients was unaware of an underlying condition contributing to CNPG (64%), while psychiatric diseases were the conditions most often mentioned in association with CNPG (19%). CONCLUSIONS This multicentre cross-sectional study shows that itch is the dominant symptom in CNPG and reveals that the profile of the disease is similar throughout Europe.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several treatment options are currently available for the treatment of psoriasis. OBJECTIVE To explore the main associations between patients' characteristics and systemic treatments prescribed for psoriasis in a large group of patients observed in real-life clinical practice. METHODS This was a retrospective analysis of baseline data collected within the Swiss Dermatology Network for Targeted Therapies registry in Switzerland between March 2011 and December 2017. Semantic map analysis was used in order to capture the best associations between variables taking into account other covariates in the system. RESULTS A total of 549 patients (mean age 46.7 ± 14.7 years) were included in the analysis. Conventional therapies such as retinoids and methotrexate were associated with no previous systemic therapies for psoriasis, a moderate quality of life (QoL) at therapy onset and older age (≥60 years). Fumaric acid derivatives were associated with mild psoriasis (psoriasis area severity index < 10) and long disease duration (≥20 years). On the other side, cyclosporine and psoralen and ultraviolet A/ultraviolet B treatments were linked to a more severe condition, including impaired QoL, hospitalization and inability to work. Regarding biological therapies, both infliximab and adalimumab were connected to the presence of psoriatic arthritis, severe disease condition and other comorbidities, including chronic liver or kidney diseases and tuberculosis. Etanercept, ustekinumab and secukinumab were all connected to a complex history of previous systemic treatments for psoriasis, moderate disease condition, overweight and university education. CONCLUSIONS The analysis shows multifaceted associations between patients' characteristics, comorbidities, disease severity and systemic treatments prescribed for psoriasis. In particular, our semantic map indicates that comorbidities play a central role in decision-making of systemic treatments usage for psoriasis. Future studies should further investigate specific connections emerging from our data.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic prurigo (CPG) is a distinct disease characterized by chronic pruritus, history and/or signs of prolonged scratching and multiple pruriginous lesions. It may present with various clinical manifestations, including papules, nodules, plaques or umbilicated lesions. Some patients with chronic pruritus show pruriginous linear and scaring scratch lesions (LSSL) and it is unclear whether these lesions belong to the spectrum of CPG. OBJECTIVE To achieve a consensus on the classification of pruriginous LSSL and establish criteria to differentiate them from similar appearing conditions of different nature. METHODS Members of the Task Force Pruritus (TFP) of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology participated in the consensus conference, discussing representative clinical cases. Using the Delphi method, consensus was reached when ≥75% of members agreed on a statement. RESULTS Twenty-one members of the TFP with voting rights participated in the meeting. It was consented that LSSL occurs due to chronic pruritus and prolonged scratching, and share common pathophysiological mechanisms with CPG. LSSL were thus considered as belonging to the spectrum of CPG and the term 'linear prurigo' was chosen to describe this manifestation. CONCLUSION Considering linear prurigo as belonging to the spectrum of CPG has important clinical implications, since both the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of these patients should be performed as recommended for CPG. Importantly, linear prurigo should be differentiated from self-inflicted skin lesions as factitious disorders or skin picking syndromes. In the latter, artificial manipulation rather than pruritus itself leads to the development of cutaneous lesions, which can show clinical similarities to linear prurigo.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic pruritus (CP) is a frequently occurring symptom in inflammatory dermatoses, causing a high burden and limitations to health-related quality of life (HRQoL). OBJECTIVE The ItchyQoL was developed to assess the impairment to HRQoL in patients with CP. However, it has only been validated in English and German. Here, we report the validation in several languages across Europe. METHODS After professional translation, the versions of ItchyQoL were digitized for use as a tablet application. Validation was performed in clinics for dermatology in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey. RESULTS Five hundred and thirty-five patients with either contact dermatitis, chronic prurigo - nodular type, psoriasis vulgaris, lichen planus or mycosis fungoides/Sézary syndrome and with CP ≥ 3 on the numerical rating scale were included. ItchyQoL showed a high level of consistency (Cronbach's-α, all: 0.95) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation: 0.91). It strongly correlated with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (r = 0.72, P < 0.001) and moderately correlated with itch intensity scales in the study population (visual analogue scale r = 0.46; numerical rating scale r = 0.51; verbal rating scale r = 0.51, for all: P < 0.001). CONCLUSION ItchyQoL is now also validated in French, Italian, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Turkish and can be used in clinical trials in countries speaking these languages.

Abstract
Apligraf, a manufactured living human skin equivalent, was the first true composite tissue analog to become commercially available. It has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers. The tissue engineered bi-layered skin equivalent has both an epidermis and a dermis, which consist of keratinocytes and fibroblasts derived from neonatal foreskin and bovine collagen. The skin equivalent produces a great number of cytokines and growth factors and is immunologically well tolerated. The product is easy to handle in clinical use and can be applied in an outpatient setting.

Abstract
The primary goal of visual data exploration tools is to enable the discovery of new insights. To justify and reproduce insights, the discovery process needs to be documented and communicated. A common approach to documenting and presenting findings is to capture visualizations as images or videos. Images, however, are insufficient for telling the story of a visual discovery, as they lack full provenance information and context. Videos are difficult to produce and edit, particularly due to the non-linear nature of the exploratory process. Most importantly, however, neither approach provides the opportunity to return to any point in the exploration in order to review the state of the visualization in detail or to conduct additional analyses. In this paper we present CLUE (Capture, Label, Understand, Explain), a model that tightly integrates data exploration and presentation of discoveries. Based on provenance data captured during the exploration process, users can extract key steps, add annotations, and author "Vistories", visual stories based on the history of the exploration. These Vistories can be shared for others to view, but also to retrace and extend the original analysis. We discuss how the CLUE approach can be integrated into visualization tools and provide a prototype implementation. Finally, we demonstrate the general applicability of the model in two usage scenarios: a Gapminder-inspired visualization to explore public health data and an example from molecular biology that illustrates how Vistories could be used in scientific journals. Abstract
A major challenge in data-driven biomedical research lies in the collection and representation of data provenance information to ensure that findings are reproducibile. In order to communicate and reproduce multi-step analysis workflows executed on datasets that contain data for dozens or hundreds of samples, it is crucial to be able to visualize the provenance graph at different levels of aggregation. Most existing approaches are based on node-link diagrams, which do not scale to the complexity of typical data provenance graphs. In our proposed approach, we reduce the complexity of the graph using hierarchical and motif-based aggregation. Based on user action and graph attributes, a modular degree-of-interest (DoI) function is applied to expand parts of the graph that are relevant to the user. This interest-driven adaptive approach to provenance visualization allows users to review and communicate complex multi-step analyses, which can be based on hundreds of files that are processed by numerous workflows. We have integrated our approach into an analysis platform that captures extensive data provenance information, and demonstrate its effectiveness by means of a biomedical usage scenario.

Abstract
The analysis of paths in graphs is highly relevant in many domains. Typically, path-related tasks are performed in node-link layouts. Unfortunately, graph layouts often do not scale to the size of many real world networks. Also, many networks are multivariate, i.e., contain rich attribute sets associated with the nodes and edges. These attributes are often critical in judging paths, but directly visualizing attributes in a graph layout exacerbates the scalability problem. In this paper, we present visual analysis solutions dedicated to path-related tasks in large and highly multivariate graphs. We show that by focusing on paths, we can address the scalability problem of multivariate graph visualization, equipping analysts with a powerful tool to explore large graphs. We introduce Pathfinder (Figure 1), a technique that provides visual methods to query paths, while considering various constraints. The resulting set of paths is visualized in both a ranked list and as a node-link diagram. For the paths in the list, we display rich attribute data associated with nodes and edges, and the node-link diagram provides topological context. The paths can be ranked based on topological properties, such as path length or average node degree, and scores derived from attribute data. Pathfinder is designed to scale to graphs with tens of thousands of nodes and edges by employing strategies such as incremental query results. We demonstrate Pathfinder's fitness for use in scenarios with data from a coauthor network and biological pathways.

Abstract
We report the case of a 36-year-old woman who presented with a surgical site infection with atypical mycobacteria several months after liposuction in the Caribbean. Postoperative wound infections with Mycobacterium abscessus present as subcutaneous nodular abscesses with partly putrid secretion. Due to the necessity of specific diagnostic measures, diagnosis is often delayed. Treatment is difficult because Mycobacterium abscessus is resistant to conventional tuberculostatics and many other antibiotics. Clarithromycin combined with amikacin is the commonly used empirical treatment. Treatment duration is several months.

Genome-wide association analysis to identify genotype × environment interaction for milk protein yield and level of somatic cell score as environmental descriptors in German Holsteins. Abstract
Genotype by environment interaction (G × E) has been widely reported in dairy cattle. If the environment can be measured on a continuous scale, reaction norms can be applied to study G × E. The average herd milk production level has frequently been used as an environmental descriptor because it is influenced by the level of feeding or the feeding regimen. Another important environmental factor is the level of udder health and hygiene, for which the average herd somatic cell count might be a descriptor. In the present study, we conducted a genome-wide association analysis to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) that affect intercept and slope of milk protein yield reaction norms when using the average herd test-day solution for somatic cell score as an environmental descriptor. Sire estimates for intercept and slope of the reaction norms were calculated from around 12 million daughter records, using linear reaction norm models. Sires were genotyped for ~54,000 SNP. The sire estimates were used as observations in the association analysis, using 1,797 sires. Significant SNP were confirmed in an independent validation set consisting of 500 sires. A known major gene affecting protein yield was included as a covariable in the statistical model. Sixty (21) SNP were confirmed for intercept with P ≤ 0.01 (P ≤ 0.001) in the validation set, and 28 and 11 SNP, respectively, were confirmed for slope. Most but not all SNP affecting slope also affected intercept. Comparison with an earlier study revealed that SNP affecting slope were, in general, also significant for slope when the environment was modeled by the average herd milk production level, although the two environmental descriptors were poorly correlated.

Abstract
Identification and characterization of cancer subtypes are important areas of research that are based on the integrated analysis of multiple heterogeneous genomics datasets. Since there are no tools supporting this process, much of this work is done using ad-hoc scripts and static plots, which is inefficient and limits visual exploration of the data. To address this, we have developed StratomeX, an integrative visualization tool that allows investigators to explore the relationships of candidate subtypes across multiple genomic data types such as gene expression, DNA methylation, or copy number data. StratomeX represents datasets as columns and subtypes as bricks in these columns. Ribbons between the columns connect bricks to show subtype relationships across datasets. Drill-down features enable detailed exploration. StratomeX provides insights into the functional and clinical implications of candidate subtypes by employing small multiples, which allow investigators to assess the effect of subtypes on molecular pathways or outcomes such as patient survival. As the configuration of viewing parameters in such a multi-dataset, multi-view scenario is complex, we propose a meta visualization and configuration interface for dataset dependencies and data-view relationships. StratomeX is developed in close collaboration with domain experts. We describe case studies that illustrate how investigators used the tool to explore subtypes in large datasets and demonstrate how they efficiently replicated findings from the literature and gained new insights into the data.

Abstract
The present study investigated putative interaction effects between the DGAT1 K232A mutation and the polygenic term (i.e., all genes except DGAT1) for 5 milk production traits in the German Holstein dairy cattle population. Mixed models were used, and the test for interaction relied on the comparison of polygenic variance components depending on the sire's genotypes at DGAT1 K232A. Substitution effects were highly significant for all traits. Significant interaction effects were found for milk fat and protein percentage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-healing leg ulcers represent a treatment problem. OBJECTIVE Investigate grafting of autologous suction blister roofs as treatment. METHODS Twenty-nine chronic, non-healing leg ulcers of various aetiologies in 18 inpatients were treated by autologous epidermal grafting using the roofs of suction blisters. RESULTS 55% of ulcers completely healed 2 to 6 weeks after grafting. A 50-90% reduction in size was documented in 34% and no change was observed in 11% of ulcers. Twelve weeks after grafting, 89% of ulcers were healed completely. In most ulcers, we observed a stimulation of reepithelialization from the wound edge ('edge effect') and an accelerated formation of healthy granulation tissue. During a follow-up period of 12 months, 90% of the ulcers remained healed. CONCLUSION Grafting of autologous suction blister roofs is an effective treatment option for non-healing leg ulcers. The advantages of the method are its lack of pain, low costs and immediate availability.

Abstract
Chronic pruritus is a frequent symptom in dermatology caused by a variety of dermatologic, neurologic and other systemic diseases. For adequate, economically-appropriate medical care of patients with chronic pruritus, a clinical classification of pruritus which also serves as a diagnostic algorithm is necessary. Currently suggested classifications are etiologic and not helpful in daily clinical routine. The proposed clinical classification is oriented at the clinical appearance of the patients and differentiates between disorders with or without primary or secondary skin lesions.

Abstract
Chronic itch is a frequent symptom not only associated with skin diseases. In a number of internal, neurological and psychiatric illnesses pruritus can be a prominent and distressing symptom. Diagnosis is frequently very cumbersome because pruritus in these diseases often does not cause any specific skin lesions. This report focuses on the most important internal disease entities causing pruritus and highlights the most successful diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
The rare occurrence of angiosarcoma in postmastectomy upper-limb lymphedema with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is discussed. Unfamiliarity with this aggressive vascular tumor and its harmless appearance often leads to delayed diagnosis. Angiosarcoma complicating chronic lymphedema may be low in signal intensity on T2-weighting and short tau inversion recovery (STIR) imaging reflecting the densely cellular, fibrous stroma, and sparsely vascularized tumor histology. Additional administration of intravenous contrast medium revealed significant enhancement of the tumorous lesions. Awareness of angiosarcoma and its MR imaging appearance in patients with chronic lymphedema may be a key to early diagnosis or allow at least inclusion in the differential diagnosis.

Abstract
A 70-year-old Caucasian man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia suffered from widespread, histologically proven cutaneous lichen planus responding to topical corticosteroids. 2 years later, he presented with painful erosive stomatitis and increasing dyspnea. Histology, direct and indirect immunofluorescence were diagnostic for paraneoplastic pemphigus. A full diagnostic workup could not disclose the cause of the progressive respiratory insufficiency. Despite aggressive treatment of the lymphocytic leukemia and the paraneoplastic pemphigus, the patient died 3 months after diagnosis. Paraneoplastic pemphigus may lead to pulmonary failure which is refractory to treatment and has a fatal outcome.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sézary syndrome (SS) is a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma characterized by erythroderma, lymphadenopathy and circulating atypical T cells. Median survival after diagnosis is 10 yr, with chemotherapy resistance being a major problem in advanced disease. Alemtuzumab (Campath-1H) is a monoclonal antibody directed against the lymphocytic antigen CD52, expressed on B- and T-cells. Alemtuzumab is approved for relapsing chronic B-cell leukemia and seems to be active also in T-cell lymphomas such as T-cell prolymphocytic lymphoma, SS and mycosis fungiodes. CASE HISTORY A 32-yr-old male patient presented with advanced stage, extensively pretreated SS with heavily itching erythroderma, peripheral lymphadenopathy, circulating Sézary cells and bone marrow infiltration. The disease had not responded to PUVA/interferon-alpha and progressed on chemotherapy with CHOP, 2-CDA, vinorelbine, etoposide and liposomal doxorubicin. Following treatment with alemtuzumab (30 mg i.v. three times per week for 10 wk), itching resolved rapidly and an almost complete remission was achieved within 3 months after starting this treatment. At 12-month follow up, no disease progression was present. CONCLUSION In accordance with previous data, this single case underlines the potent activity of alemtuzumab in advanced, chemotherapy-refractory SS.

Abstract
Inhibition of tumor angiogenesis represents a promising new approach for the treatment of human cancers. It has remained unclear, however, whether inhibition of tumor angiogenesis may also result in impaired wound healing, a process thought to be angiogenesis dependent. To determine the effects of the angiogenesis inhibitor vasostatin, a 180 amino acid calreticulin fragment, on wound healing at tumor inhibiting doses, full-thickness wounds were generated on the back of nude mice that were also injected intradermally with CA46 Burkitt lymphoma cells. Mice were treated with daily injections of vasostatin or vehicle control at a site between the wounds and the transplanted tumor cells over 14 d. Vasostatin potently inhibited tumor growth and significantly reduced tumor angiogenesis, as measured by computer-assisted image analysis of CD31-stained tumor sections. Moreover, vasostatin treatment resulted in an increased fraction of mature tumor-associated blood vessels. In contrast, no impairment of wound healing was observed in vasostatin-treated mice, despite a significantly reduced vascularity of the wound granulation tissue. Our results reveal a different sensitivity of malignant tumor growth and physiologic wound healing to inhibition of angiogenesis, and they suggest that therapeutic inhibition of tumor angiogenesis may be achieved without impairment of tissue repair.

Abstract
Contact dermatitis or eczema is a polymorphic inflammation of the skin. It occurs at the site of contact with irritating or antigenic substances. In the acute phase there is occurrence of itching erythema, papules, and vesicles, whereas in the chronic phase there is dryness, hyperkeratosis, and sometimes fissures. Contact dermatitis can be divided into irritant and allergic types. Allergic contact dermatitis is a type-IV T-cell-mediated reaction occurring in a sensitized individual after contact with the antigen/allergen. Such antigens are usually low molecular weight substances (MW approximately 500), called haptens; 3000 contact allergens are known. The diagnosis of contact allergy is made on the basis of the history, clinical findings, and a positive epicutancous test result. Allergic, but not irritative, contact dermatitis can spread beyond the area of contact to other body parts. Eczematous lesions are characterized by a mononuclear infiltrate consisting mainly of T cells in the dermis and epidermis, together with an intercellular epidermal edema that is. spongiosis. In allergic contact dermatitis, skin-applied antigen is taken up by epidermal Langerhans cells and transported with the afferent lymph to the regional lymph nodes. Here, naive T lymphocytes are sensitized to become antigen-specific effector T cells, which then leave the lymph node, enter the circulation, and are recruited to the skin by means of specific cell surface molecules, to form the infiltrates. Cytokines released by infiltrating T cells eventually cause keratinocyte apoptosis.

Abstract
The case of a 73-year-old female patient is reported with a 25-year-long history of widespread cutaneous sarcoidosis without any known extracutaneous manifestations. The skin manifestations started with erythematous and plaque-like lesions that had ulcerated on the legs for the last half-year. A relevant venous insufficiency or other etiology of the ulcers could not be found. Histology from lesions of the trunk and from the surroundings of the ulcers revealed the typical noncaseating granulomas. A systemic involvement could not be observed; leukopenia and a slightly elevated angiotensin-converting enzyme level in the serum were found. Topical steroids did not prove successful on the ulcers. Apligraf, a bilayered skin equivalent, was transplanted twice on the ulcers leading to complete closure within 3 months. A therapy with systemic steroids could thus be avoided.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The authors sought to identify brain mechanisms underlying the well-documented facial affect recognition deficit in patients with schizophrenia. Since this deficit is stable over the course of the illness and relatively specific for schizophrenic disorders, it was expected that knowledge about the related brain mechanisms would provide substantial information about the pathophysiology of the illness. METHOD Fifteen partly remitted schizophrenic inpatients and 12 healthy volunteers categorized facial expressions of emotion and performed two control tasks while magnetoencephalographic recordings were done by means of a 148-channel whole head system, which revealed foci of high cerebral activity and their evolution in time. Anatomical sites were defined through coregistrated magnetic resonance images. RESULTS The magnetoencephalography data recorded in response to facial expressions of emotion revealed that patients generated weaker activations (primary current density) in inferior prefrontal, temporal, occipital, and inferior parietal areas at circumscribed latencies. Group differences did not occur in basic visual areas during a first sensory-related activation between 60 and 120 msec. Behavioral performance was associated with strength of activation in inferior prefrontal areas, the right posterior fusiform gyrus region, right anterior temporal cortex, and the right inferior parietal cortex. CONCLUSIONS Disturbed facial affect recognition in schizophrenic patients might be a result of hypoactivity in distributed brain regions, some of them previously related to the pathophysiology of schizophrenic disorders. These regions are probably working within a spatially and temporally defined circuitry.

Abstract
The rapidly increasing incidence and mortality rate of malignant melanoma, together with the lack of efficient treatment of the late stages, makes it a serious threat to public health. Innovative new treatments are needed. The proteins of the ras-family of proto-oncogenes, functioning as relay switches for signalling pathways between cell surface and nucleus, are involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis and transformation. If over-expressed or mutated they can induce and/or maintain a transformed state of a cell. Codon 61 mutations of N-ras seem to be involved in melanoma development on sun exposed sites. In order to induce an immune response towards mutated N-ras proteins we performed a phase 1 feasibility study. Ten melanoma patients were immunized intradermally 6 times with N-ras peptides (residue 49-73) with 4 codon 61 mutations using GM-CSF as adjuvant. HLA typing was not used as an inclusion criterion. Eight patients responded with strong delayed type hypersensitivity reactions. In 2 of the patients an in vitro response to the vaccine could also be detected. The specificity of the reaction could be confirmed by cloning of peptide-specific CD4 positive T cells from peripheral blood of the patients. Intradermal injection of ras peptides using GM-CSF as adjuvant is simple to perform and seems to be efficient in inducing cellular immune responses. Since a majority of the patients showed positive skin reactions and 2 of the patients analysed showed a T-helper response to this melanoma specific antigen, these promiscuous HLA class II binding mutant ras peptides may be candidates for inclusion into vaccine cocktails containing various established CTL epitopes.

Abstract
The ability to recognise emotional expressions of faces and the ability to categorise blurred and non-blurred faces and complex objects was tested in 16 schizophrenic in-patients and 16 healthy volunteers. EEGs were recorded during performance of the tasks and event-related potentials were compared between groups. Patients performed worse than healthy volunteers in recognition of facial affect but not in categorisation of blurred faces. Furthermore, within a 180-250ms latency range patients showed reduced amplitudes during affect recognition compared with controls but not during categorisation of blurred faces. Amplitudes recorded at frontal electrode sites were associated with performance in facial affect recognition. These results provide a first clue to the neurophysiological basis of the widely reported facial affect recognition deficit in schizophrenic patients.

Abstract
The syndecans make up a family of transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycans that act as coreceptors with integrins and growth factor tyrosine kinase receptors. Syndecan-4 is upregulated in skin dermis after wounding, and, in cultured fibroblasts adherent to the ECM protein fibronectin, this proteoglycan signals cooperatively with beta1 integrins. In this study, we generated mice in which the syndecan-4 gene was disrupted by homologous recombination in embryonic stem cells to test the hypothesis that syndecan-4 contributes to wound repair. Mice heterozygous or homozygous for the disrupted syndecan-4 gene are viable, fertile, and macroscopically indistinguishable from wild-type littermates. Compared with wild-type littermates, mice heterozygous or homozygous for the disrupted gene have statistically significant delayed healing of skin wounds and impaired angiogenesis in the granulation tissue. These results indicate that syndecan-4 is an important cell-surface receptor in wound healing and angiogenesis and that syndecan-4 is haplo-insufficient in these processes.

Abstract
Apligraf, a manufactured living human skin equivalent, was the first true composite tissue analog to become commercially available. It has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers. The tissue engineered bi-layered skin equivalent has both an epidermis and a dermis, which consist of keratinocytes and fibroblasts derived from neonatal foreskin and bovine collagen. The skin equivalent produces a great number of cytokines and growth factors and is immunologically well tolerated. The product is easy to handle in clinical use and can be applied in an outpatient setting.

Abstract
We report a multimorbid patient with end-stage renal failure showing a large necrosis and livedo racemosa on the right thigh. Histology revealed medial calcification of the small arteries typical of calciphylaxis. We found the typical features of the disease with different risk factors like elevated calcium-phosphate product, diabetes mellitus and oral anticoagulation. On account of the location of the skin lesions, a bad prognosis was expected. In spite of therapeutical measures with lowering of the calcium and phosphate levels, the patient died 1 month after the diagnosis had been made.

Abstract
Magnetic field tomography (MFT) was used to extract estimates for distributed source activity from average and single trial MEG signals recorded while subjects identified objects (including faces) and facial expressions of emotion. Regions of interest (ROIs) were automatically identified from the MFT solutions of the average signal for each subject. For one subject the entire set of MFT estimates obtained from unaveraged data was also used to compute simultaneous time series for the single trial activity in different ROIs. Three pairs of homologous areas in each hemisphere were selected for further analysis: posterior calcarine sulcus (PCS), fusiform gyrus (FM), and the amygdaloid complex (AM). Mutual information (MI) between each pair of the areas was computed from all single trial time series and contrasted for different tasks (object or emotion recognition) and categories within each task. The MI analysis shows that through feed-forward and feedback linkages, the "computation" load associated with the task of identifying objects and emotions is spread across both space (different ROIs and hemispheres) and time (different latencies and delays in couplings between areas)-well within 200 ms, different objects separate first in the right hemisphere PCS and FG coupling while different emotions separate in the right hemisphere FG and AM coupling, particularly at latencies after 200 ms.

Abstract
The function of the endogenous angiogenesis inhibitor thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) in tissue repair has remained controversial. We established transgenic mice with targeted overexpression of TSP-1 in the skin, using a keratin 14 expression cassette. TSP-1 transgenic mice were healthy and fertile, and did not show any major abnormalities of normal skin vascularity, cutaneous vascular architecture, or microvascular permeability. However, healing of full-thickness skin wounds was greatly delayed in TSP-1 transgenic mice and was associated with reduced granulation tissue formation and highly diminished wound angiogenesis. Moreover, TSP-1 potently inhibited fibroblast migration in vivo and in vitro. These findings demonstrate that TSP-1 preferentially interfered with wound healing-associated angiogenesis, rather than with the angiogenesis associated with normal development and skin homeostasis, and suggest that therapeutic application of angiogenesis inhibitors might potentially be associated with impaired wound vascularization and tissue repair.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE In 1970 Ralph W. Grover described a clinicopathologic entity characterized by pruritic keratotic papules and papulovesicles predominantly on the trunk, disappearing spontaneously after a few weeks or months and demonstrating the histological features of epidermal acantholysis. The etiology remains unknown; sweating, heat and sunlight are suspected trigger factors. In our survey the clinical spectrum of the disease will be examined. PATIENTS AND METHODS We have analyzed 21 cases of Grover's disease histologically diagnosed in Berne in 1997 and 1998. RESULTS In most cases we observed isolated papules disseminated on the trunk. The predominant histological type was the Darier-type; presumably there is no correlation between histological type and clinical features. At the time of diagnosis the skin disorder had been present on average for 83 months. There was a strong association with sweating and heat. Topical steroids were successful in 50% of patients. CONCLUSIONS Our 21 cases reflect in general the literature. Nevertheless, the long persistence of the skin lesions was striking perhaps making the term transient somewhat inaccurate.

Abstract
In order to study brain potentials related to decoding of facial expressions of emotions and those, related to basic perception of faces 16 right-handed subjects performed tasks on facial emotion recognition and perception of blurred faces and objects. Electroencephalograph (EEG) recordings during performance of the tasks revealed similar event-related potentials during the presentation of faces at 120 and 170 ms after stimulus onset in both of the tasks but significant differences in amplitudes between 180 and 300 ms. Whereas faces in the emotion recognition task produced high amplitudes in that latency range, potentials in response to faces in the blurred object condition were virtually absent. These data point to the assumption that decoding of facial expressions starts early in the brain and might be processed separately from basic stages of face perception.

Abstract
Inhibition of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor Flk-1 has been shown to prevent invasion of experimental squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). To directly investigate the role of VEGF in tumor invasion, we stably transfected human SCC-13 cells, which are characterized by a noninvasive phenotype in vivo, with expression vectors containing murine VEGF(164) in sense (SCC/VEGF+) or antisense (SCC/VEGF-) orientation or with vector alone (SCC/vec). SCC/vec cells formed slowly growing, well-differentiated tumors with well-defined borders between tumor and stroma, after intradermal or subcutaneous injection. In contrast, SCC/VEGF+ tumors were characterized by rapid tumor growth, with small cell groups and single cells invading into the surrounding tissue, and by admixture of blood vessels and tumor cells in areas of tumor invasion. We detected an increase in tumor vessel density and size in VEGF-overexpressing tumors, resulting in a more than fourfold increase in total vascular areas. In contrast, SCC/VEGF- clones formed noninvasive, sharply circumscribed tumors with reduced vascular density. These findings demonstrate that selective VEGF overexpression was sufficient to induce tumor invasiveness, and they provide further evidence for an active role of the tumor stroma in cancer progression.
