Abstract
Grit causes problems in water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs): clogging pipes, damaging pumps, and reducing the active volume of aeration tanks and anaerobic digesters by grit accumulation. Grit chambers are built to remove these particles. However, no standardized methodology exists to characterize grit particles for grit chamber design and operation despite the large observed variability in grit composition. Therefore, this paper proposes a combination and adaptation of existing methods to sample and characterize grit particles in view of proper grit chamber design and its modelling to ultimately optimize the efficiency of this important WRRF unit process. Characteristics evaluated included particle size distribution from sieving after different sample pretreatments, organic/inorganic fractions, and density.

Abstract
A pilot study was performed to evaluate the potential of an inert self-supported immersed fixed film media to upgrade aerated lagoons. Simultaneous organic matter removal and nitrification was assessed under different loading rates and temperatures (near 0 °C) using 12 laboratory-scale reactors operated in parallel. Test results showed that both the temperature and the load have an influence on organic matter effluent concentrations. Effluent quality seemed related to the observed biofilm thickness. Thicker biofilm is believed to have contributed to biomass detachment and increased particulate organic matter concentrations in the effluent. Simultaneous organic removal and nitrification was obtained at loads above 5 g CBOD5/m2·d. The highest nitrification rate at 0.4 °C was obtained for the smallest load, which showed a nitrification limitation close to freezing point.

Abstract
A detailed study of a solid slaughterhouse waste (SHW) anaerobic treatment is presented. The waste used in this study is rich in lipids and proteins residue. Long chain fatty acids (LCFA), coming from the hydrolysis of lipids were inhibitory to anaerobic processes at different degrees. Acetogenesis and methanogenesis processes were mainly affected by inhibition whereas disintegration and hydrolysis processes did not seem to be affected by high LCFA concentrations. Nevertheless, because of the high energy content, this kind of waste is very suitable for anaerobic digestion but strict control of operating conditions is required to prevent inhibition. For that, two inhibition indicators were identified in this study. Those two indicators, LCFA dynamics and LCFA/VSbiomass ratio proved to be useful to predict and to estimate the process inhibition degree.

Abstract
Models for anaerobic digestion of lipid-rich waste taking inhibition into account were reviewed and, if necessary, adjusted to the ADM1 model framework in order to compare them. Experimental data from anaerobic digestion of slaughterhouse waste at an organic loading rate (OLR) ranging from 0.3 to 1.9kgVSm-3d-1 were used to compare and evaluate models. Experimental data obtained at low OLRs were accurately modeled whatever the model thereby validating the stoichiometric parameters used and influent fractionation. However, at higher OLRs, although inhibition parameters were optimized to reduce differences between experimental and simulated data, no model was able to accurately simulate accumulation of substrates and intermediates, mainly due to the wrong simulation of pH. A simulation using pH based on experimental data showed that acetogenesis and methanogenesis were the most sensitive steps to LCFA inhibition and enabled identification of the inhibition parameters of both steps.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to improve knowledge on the integrated fixed-film-activated sludge (IFAS) system designed for nitrogen removal. Biofilm growth and its contribution to nitrification were monitored under various operating conditions in a semi-industrial pilot-scale plant. Nitrification rates were observed in biofilms developed on free-floating media and in activated sludge operated under a low sludge retention time (4 days) and at an ammonia loading rate of 45-70 gNH4-N/kgMLVSS/d. Operational conditions, i.e. oxygen concentration, redox potential, suspended solids concentration, ammonium and nitrates, were monitored continuously in the reactors. High removal efficiencies were observed for carbon and ammonium at high-loading rate. The contribution of biofilm to nitrification was determined as 40-70% of total NOx-N production under the operating conditions tested. Optimal conditions to optimize process compacity were determined. The tested configuration responds especially well to winter and summer nitrification conditions. These results help provide a deeper understanding of how autotrophic biomass evolves through environmental and operational conditions in IFAS systems.

Abstract
Many authors have observed the influence of the settling velocity distribution on the sedimentation process in retention tanks. However, the pollutants' behaviour in such tanks is not well characterized, especially with respect to their settling velocity distribution. This paper presents a phenomenological modelling study dealing with the way by which the settling velocity distribution of particles in combined sewage changes between entering and leaving an off-line retention tank. The work starts from a previously published model (Lessard and Beck, 1991) which is first implemented in a wastewater management modelling software, to be then tested with full-scale field data for the first time. Next, its performance is improved by integrating the particle settling velocity distribution and adding a description of the resuspension due to pumping for emptying the tank. Finally, the potential of the improved model is demonstrated by comparing the results for one more rain event.

Abstract
This work suggests a procedure to correctly calibrate the parameters of a one-dimensional MBBR dynamic model in nitrification treatment. The study deals with the MBBR configuration with two reactors in series, one for carbon treatment and the other for nitrogen treatment. Because of the influence of the first reactor on the second one, the approach needs a specific calibration strategy. Firstly, a comparison between measured values and simulated ones obtained with default parameters has been carried out. Simulated values of filtered COD, NH(4)-N and dissolved oxygen are underestimated and nitrates are overestimated compared with observed data. Thus, nitrifying rate and oxygen transfer into the biofilm are overvalued. Secondly, a sensitivity analysis was carried out for parameters and for COD fractionation. It revealed three classes of sensitive parameters: physical, diffusional and kinetic. Then a calibration protocol of the MBBR dynamic model was proposed. It was successfully tested on data recorded at a pilot-scale plant and a calibrated set of values was obtained for four parameters: the maximum biofilm thickness, the detachment rate, the maximum autotrophic growth rate and the oxygen transfer rate.

Abstract
An experimental protocol to evaluate the structured biomass model proposed by Lavallée (Lavallée, Lessard, and Vanrolleghem, J Environ Eng Sci 2005;4:517-532) is presented. The protocol was devised to induce transient behavior and characterize the evolution of several internal biomass components. The proposed model is based on biochemical principles, and was fitted to the collected data. In these experiments, it was observed that filling the storage capacity of cells leads to special transient behavior, including a temporarily reduced metabolic activity. The model-based interpretation of the results showed that the observed transient behavior can be explained by cross-regulation of carbon and nitrogen metabolism. Hence, according to an extensive literature review, the cross-regulation of carbon and nitrogen can be used to model some observed transient behaviors and regulation of the storage process in activated sludge.

Abstract
Theoretical studies have shown that discharges from retention tanks could have a negative impact on the WWTP's (Wastewater Treatment Plant) effluent. Characterization of such discharges is necessary to better understand these impacts. This study aims at: (1) characterizing water quality during emptying of a tank; and (2) characterizing the temporal variation of settling velocities of the waters released to the WWTP. Two full-scale sampling campaigns (18 rain events) have been realized in Quebec City and laboratory analyses have shown a wide variability of total suspended solids (TSS) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentrations in the water released from the tank. Suspended solids seem to settle quickly because they are only found in large amounts during the first 15 min of pumping to the WWTP. These solids are hypothesized to come from the pumping in which solids remained after a previous event. When these solids are evacuated, low TSS containing waters are pumped from the retention tank. A second concentration peak occurs at the end of the emptying period when the tank is cleaned with wash water. Finally, settling velocity studies allowed characterizing combined sewer wastewaters by separating three main fractions of pollutants which correspond to the beginning, middle and end of emptying. In most cases, it is noticed that particle settling velocities increase as the pollutant load increases.

Abstract
Models currently used have been developed to describe the storage response in the activated sludge process. In these models the distribution of the substrate flux between growth and storage is an empirical function. rRNA-structured biomass models are proposed to describe the metabolic status of cells in view of predicting the growth response (dmicro/dt) of cells in activated sludge process. The autocatalytic reaction rate of the synthesis of the PSS component (rRNA) can provide a mechanistic explanation for the growth response and the growth lag phase. The proposed models were able to describe and predict properly the growth response of the biomass in various types of reactor. Such models could be more widely applicable by using intrinsic model parameters. This would be a key improvement for as it would lead to improved models for design.

Abstract
A nutritional assay has been conducted with rainbow trout fry (Oncorhynchus mykiss) using a biomass of photosynthetic micro-organisms. The algal biomass was incorporated in the feed at increasing levels (12.5%, 25% and 50%) in order to verify the effects on survival (%), growth (length and mass) and carcass quality of the fish (skin color, water, protein and lipid content). Two commercial feeds (CF, as sold, and 0% A, reprocessed without algae) have been used as controls. After eight weeks at 10 degrees C, the growth has been significantly reduced in fish fed the feeds containing 25% and 50% algae diets (P<0.01). Moreover, an incorporation of algae higher than 12.5% in the feed led to a increase of water content (CF versus other diets; P<0.01) and TL (CF versus 50% A; P<0.01) (wet basis) content of carcasses. Survival was 100% in all treatment groups. Under the experimental conditions used, the results obtained show that a maximum of 12.5% of algal biomass can be incorporated in the feed for rainbow trout fry (O. mykiss) without negative consequences on growth and body content in lipids and energy of fish.

Abstract
Effect of aeration rate on the removal of organic matter and nitrogen and on the formation of NH3, N2O and N2 was studied for an extensive biofiltration system packed with an organic media, which was used to treat pig manure. The results show high removal of BOD5 and TSS (99 and > or = 98%), independently of the four aeration rate tested (3.4-34 m3/m2 x h). Aeration rate > or = 4.4 m/h resulted in high ammonia stripping during start-up (> or = 1.0 kg NH3-N/m3 of swine manure treated), while using 3.4 m/h only 0.3 kg NH3-N/m3 were stripped. Complete nitrification was achieved after day 100 of operation, except in the biofilter with the lowest aeration rate. Simultaneous denitrification established in all the biofilters. Applying an aeration rate of 9.4 m/h up to 1.2 kg nitrogen was removed in the form of N2 for each m3 of swine manure treated. Contrary to the expectations, N2 formation and release increased with the aeration rate. This particular behaviour seems to be related to the punctual accumulation of water layers inside the biofilters, caused by the air force flowing in the opposite direction to the water flux. N2O production was quite similar in all biofilters (between 0.25-0.36 kg N2O-N/m3 of swine manure treated).

Abstract
This work deals with the methodology put in place to fit and validate the parameters of a biofiltration model (BAF) in tertiary nitrification treatment and dynamic conditions. For an average loading rate of 0.65 kg NH4-N/m(3) media/d, different time loading rates are applied inside a filtration-backwash run using a semi-industrial pilot. Comparisons between predicted and observed values on the NH4-N, NO3-N and TSS in treated water and the total head loss deltaP are carried out firstly using default values of BAF parameters. Model predictions overestimate values measured but trends are well reproduced. A sensitivity analysis is carried out and the hierarchy of BAF parameters has been set up classifying them into strong and low influence on the effluent concentrations. Among parameters revealing the strongest influence are those of the filtration module and the mean density of biofilm for the TSS effluent and the total AP, the specific autotrophic growth rate, the maximum biofilm thickness and the reduction coefficient of diffusivity in the biofilm for the NH4-N, NO3-N effluent. Finally, this classification leads to setting a calibration procedure, thanks to specific experimental tests directly measuring some BAF parameters.

Abstract
Biofilters using organic media are known to procure efficient treatment for different types of wastewater, but the nitrogen removal pathways implied are still not well understood. In this study, a lab-scale aerated biofilter using peat and treating pig manure was operated for 180 days, in order to quantify the nitrogen transformations occurring in it. It was shown that stripping was important during the start-up, until nitrification took place. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, proved by N2 production, became the principal mechanism after some time. The production of N2O did not seem to come only from heterotrophic denitrification, but also from chemodenitrification and autotrophic denitrification. It has also been found that part of the influent nitrogen was retained in the system during the first 150 days, due to filtration, sorption and assimilation. During the last periods of operation, the nitrogen previously retained has been used by microorganisms, leading to an excessive N2 discharge.

Abstract
Biofiltration process using peat as media has been shown to be efficient for the treatment of agroindustrial, chemical and municipal effluents. However, determining the hydraulic retention time of this process is difficult due to many factors. Generally tracer techniques are used, but they measure the molecular retention time instead of the hydraulic retention time; and depending on the case, the results can be wrong. In order to contribute to solving this problem, the objective of this research was to find a trustworthy and adequate technique to determine the hydraulic retention time for a process using a very adsorbent filter bed material (peat). An overview of the hydraulic behaviour of a peat bed filter related to their particular structural composition is presented. Then, based on these characteristics, two different techniques to determine the hydraulic retention time were developed and tested. The first, an indirect modified tracing technique and, the second, a direct one which determines the volume of liquid in treatment into the filter bed through the establishment of a relation between the volume of porosity and the volume of empty spaces (or not occupied by liquid) into the filter bed. The results obtained showed that the proposed techniques gave similar results and proved adequate.

Abstract
Hypotheses of the ASM 1 model state that the specific respiration rate of heterotrophic active biomass is a constant. It thus becomes possible to assess the active heterotrophic biomass decay rate (bH) during starvation. The object of this study is to verify if the specific respiration rate of heterotrophic biomass remains constant throughout starvation, and if it is typical of global metabolic biomass activity, as proposed by the model hypotheses. The decay rate bH was evaluated using respirometric and enzymatic measurements. Measurement of bH through respirometry on various sludges varied between 0.28 and 0.76 d(-1). According to the enzyme and respirometric measurements carried out, a large portion of this value is related to enzymatic regulation. During starvation, when initial active biomass activity is high, down regulation of the respiratory chain results in a decrease in the specific heterotrophic active biomass respiration rate, thus creating an overevaluation of the decay rate as measured by respirometry. Thus a high decay rate used in the ASM 1 model could eventually lead to a poor forecast of biomass production.

Abstract
Even though many models have been proposed for primary clarification, none is directly compatible with the ASM1. The objective of this paper is to present the development of a reactive primary clarifier model to be used in a wastewater treatment plant simulator (WEST). A model simulating COD behavior has been developed based on the Takacs model, and was tested with full-scale data. Particulate effluent COD was well described but problems occurred predicting the underflow suspended solids concentration. The model had to be upgraded with a residence time and a flocculation term to simulate the behavior of soluble COD. An ammonification term was added to the model, resulting in an improved model fit on effluent ammonium.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate healing of pinch-grafted wounds on the distal aspect of the limbs of ponies bandaged with equine amnion or a standard nonadherent wound dressing material. ANIMALS 6 ponies. PROCEDURE A 2.5x2.5-cm full-thickness section of skin was removed from the dorsal aspect of each limb at the midpoint of the metacarpus or metatarsus. Six days later, wounds were grafted with partial-thickness pinch grafts. Half the wounds were bandaged with amnion, and the other half were bandaged with a nonadherent dressing. Bandages were changed every 3 days until wound healing was complete. At each bandage change, numbers of grafts lost were recorded, and wounds were measured. RESULTS Percentage of grafts lost from wounds bandaged with amnion was not significantly different from percentage lost from wounds bandaged with the nonadherent dressing. Median healing time for wounds bandaged with amnion (30 days) was significantly less than median healing time for wounds bandaged with the nonadherent dressing (39 days). All wounds were healed by day 45. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results suggest that amnion can be used for bandaging pinch-grafted wounds on the distal aspect of the limbs of ponies.

Abstract
In the present paper, the isolation of a third cyclin-dependent kinase gene and its cognate cDNA from Arabidopsis thaliana is described. Whereas other characterised cdc2 genes are ubiquitously expressed in Arabidopsis, expression of cdc2cAt is restricted to flowers. This gene, named cdc2cAt, differs from the two previously reported cdc2 genes in its organisation. Comparison with other cdc2 genes suggests that the deduced protein belongs to a new family of CDC2-like proteins related to the human CHED protein kinase.

Abstract
AKINalpha1, a Ser/Thr kinase from Arabidopsis thaliana belongs to the highly conserved SNF1 family of protein kinases in eukaryotes. Recent data suggest that the plant SNF1-related kinases (SnRK1 family) are key enzymes implicated in the regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae and mammals, the SNF1 and AMPKalpha protein kinases interact with two other families of proteins, namely SNF4/AMPKgamma and SIP1/SIP2/GAL83/AMPKbeta, to form active heterotrimeric complexes. In this paper, we describe the characterisation of three novel cDNAs. AKINbeta1 and AKINbeta2 encode proteins similar to SIP1, SIP2 and GAL83 and AKINgamma codes for a protein showing similarity with SNF4. Using the two-hybrid system, specific interactions have been shown between A. thaliana AKINbeta1/beta2, AKINgamma and AKINgamma as well as between the A. thaliana and S. cerevisiae subunits. Interestingly, AKINbeta1, AKINbeta2 and AKINgamma mRNAs accumulate differentially in A. thaliana tissues and are modulated during development and under different growth conditions. These data suggest the presence in higher plants of a conserved heterotrimeric complex. Moreover, the differential transcription of different non-catalytic subunits can constitute a first level of regulation of the SNF1-like complex in plants.

Abstract
Sensitivity and specificity of the FAO/IAEA antigen-ELISA kits for diagnosis of bovine trypanosomosis were investigated using sera from experimental cattle infected by tsetse challenge with cloned populations of Trypanosoma congolense (three populations) or T. vivax (one population). The kits are based on monoclonal antibodies that recognise internal antigens of tsetse-transmitted trypanosomes. Ten cattle were infected with each trypanosome population for at least 60 days, and in combination with uninfected cohorts (n = 16) were used in a double-blind study design. Sensitivity and specificity of the tests depended on the choice of positive-negative thresholds expressed as percent positivity with respect to the median OD of four replicates of the strong positive reference serum provided with the kit. In general, while overall specificities were high, sensitivities of the antigen-ELISAs were poor. For example, at a cut-off of 5% positivity, the sensitivities of the antigen-ELISAs were 11% for samples (n = 1162) from T. congolense infected cattle (n = 30), and 24% for samples (n = 283) from T. vivax infected cattle (n = 10). The corresponding specificity values were 95% and 79%, respectively. At a cut-off of 2.5% positivity sensitivity for T. congolense was 25%, and for T. vivax 35%; corresponding specificity values were 85% and 63% respectively. There were no values of the positive-negative threshold at which both sensitivity and specificity were satisfactory. Restricting the analyses to samples taken more than 2 weeks after tsetse challenge did little to improve sensitivity estimates. Trypanosome species specificities of the antigen-ELISAs were also poor. Sensitivity and species specificity of the antigen-ELISA for Trypanosoma brucei infections were not investigated. In contrast to the antigen-ELISA, the sensitivity of the buffy-coat technique when applied to the same experimental animals was fairly high at 67% for T. congolense infections and 60% for T. vivax infections. For samples taken more than 2 weeks after tsetse challenge, high sensitivity estimates of 96% for T. congolense and 76% for T. vivax infections were obtained.

Abstract
A prospective study of one year was conducted on 31 horse farms to obtain population based estimates of incidence, morbidity and mortality rates of equine colic. Farms with greater than 20 horses were enrolled by randomly selecting horse owners from 2 adjacent counties of Virginia and Maryland. Descriptive information for 1427 horses was collected at the initiation of the study and updated at 3 month intervals. Time on the farm during the study was tabulated for each horse. When colic was reported by the owner, investigators visited the farm to obtain information about the colic. The crude incidence density rate of colic was 10.6 colic cases/100 horse-years, based on 104 cases/358,991 horse-days. The median farm specific incidence density rate was 7 cases/100 horse-years, and the range for individual farms varied from 0 to 30 colic cases/100 horse-years. A specific diagnosis was not made for 84 (81%) of colic episodes. Seventy colic episodes (67%) were treated by a veterinarian. Drugs were used in 83 (80%) colic episodes, and 78 (75%) of colic cases were mild, requiring no treatment or resolving after only one treatment. Four horses required colic surgery. Fourteen (13%) horses had more than one episode of colic during the year. Mortality from all causes of death was 2.5 deaths/100 horse-years, mortality rate for colic was 0.7 deaths/100 horse-years. Proportional mortality rate of colic, 28%, was higher than for any other cause of death. Horses less than age 2 years or greater than age 10 years had lower incidence than horses age 2-10 years. No difference in colic risk between genders was identified. Arabian horses had the lowest and Thoroughbreds the highest breed specific incidence rates. Horses used for eventing, or in training had a statistically significant higher incidence rate of colic compared to mature horses with no use (pets, retired, on pasture with no stated purpose). Horses used for lessons or with no use had the lowest incidence rates.

Abstract
A 1 year prospective study was conducted on 31 horse farms to identify risk factors for equine colic. Farms were randomly selected from a list from 2 adjacent counties of Virginia and Maryland, USA. The association between colic and farm or individual horse risk factors related to management, housing, pasture, use, nutrition, health and events was first examined by univariate statistical analysis. Individually significant (P < = 0.25 for farm factors, P < = 0.10 for horse factors) variables were used in a stepwise multivariable forward logistic regression to select explanatory factors (P < = 0.05). Analysis was conducted at 2 levels: farm and individual horse with farm specified as a random effects variable. No farm-level variables were significant. Significant horse-level variables included: age, odds ratio (OR) = 2.8 for horses age 2-10 years compared to < 2 years; history of previous colic, OR = 3.6 relative to no colic; changes in concentrate feeding during the year (1 per year, OR = 3.6, more than 1, OR = 2.2) relative to no changes; more than 1 change in hay feeding during the year, OR = 2.1 relative to no changes; feeding high levels of concentrate (> 2.5 kg/day dry matter, OR = 4.8, > 5 kg/day dry matter, OR = 6.3) relative to feeding no concentrate; and vaccination with monocytic ehrlichiosis vaccine during the study, OR = 2.0 relative to no vaccination. Feeding a whole grain with or without other concentrate components reduced risk, OR = 0.4, relative to feeding no whole grain. Results of the study suggest that diet and changes in diet are important risks for colic in a population of horses on farms.

Abstract
The recent gain in knowledge concerning enzymes involved in signal transduction pathways is a direct consequence of the considerable advances made in molecular biology. Protein kinases and protein phosphatases, the two major enzymes implicated in post-translational modifications, have been studied in particular. The number of characterized plant genes and/or cDNAs encoding these enzymes is increasing everyday. Since 1991, 26 genes and cDNAs coding for plant protein phosphatases have been isolated and characterized. The huge number of protein kinases (estimated at several thousands) makes it impossible to give an exhaustive list of the genes already identified, but a classification of these enzymes, based on phylogenetic criteria, allows us to appreciate the range of functions this protein family may play in plants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine if intra-articular anesthesia of the distal interphalangeal joint could alleviate lameness associated with the navicular bursa in horses. STUDY DESIGN Experimental investigation. ANIMALS Six clinically normal horses. METHODS Lameness was induced in each horse by injecting either the left or right front navicular bursa with 5 mg of amphotericin-B. Forty-eight hours later each horse was videotaped walking and trotting before, and 5, 30, and 60 minutes after injecting the distal interphalangeal joint of the treated limb with 5 mL of 2% mepivacaine hydrochloride. All video recordings were then rerecorded onto master tapes in a random sequence. Four clinicians, unaware of the animal identity related to observation time or limb treated, independently viewed these tapes and graded the lamenesses. RESULTS There was a significant reduction in lameness 5 and 30 minutes after anesthetic was injected into the distal interphalangeal joint. Lameness scores 60 minutes after anesthetic administration were not significantly different than baseline values. Gross pathological examination confirmed marked inflammation of the treated navicular bursae and normal appearance of the distal interphalangeal joints. CONCLUSIONS Intra-articular anesthesia of the distal interphalangeal joint can alleviate lameness associated with the navicular bursa. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Intra-articular anesthesia of the distal interphalangeal joint is not specific only for lameness originating in the distal interphalangeal joint.

Abstract
Thirty-two physical examination and laboratory variables were recorded during examination of 165 horses admitted for acute abdominal disease. Univariate analyses were performed to determine which of the variables were significantly different between horses that lived or died. Stepwise logistic regression was performed to identify variables with the best predictive value. Four variables (heart rate, peritoneal fluid total protein concentration, blood lactate concentration, and abnormal mucous membrane) remained significant when entered into the model. Histograms for each significant variable were used to set "cutting-points," establishing categories that were made into a table of assigned values from which a Colic Severity Score (CSS) for each horse was calculated. Seventy-one horses in a second group were used to validate the scoring chart. Case mortality rate was similar in both groups (20.6% in development group versus 21.1% in validation group). All horses with a CSS > 7 died, whereas 75% of those with a score of < or = 7 lived. For the validation group, use of the scoring table yielded a positive predictive value of 100%, negative predictive value of 91.8%, sensitivity of 66.7%, and specificity of 100%. The overall accuracy of the CSS was 93%. The CSS is a rapid and accurate method for predicting survival in cases of equine acute abdominal disease.

Abstract
Results of an ELISA for allergen-specific IgE were compared with results of an intradermal (ID) allergy test in 5 clinically normal dogs and 36 dogs referred for evaluation of allergic dermatitis. The ELISA had a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 0%. Agreement between ID allergy test and ELISA for positive and negative results ranged from 44 to 56% for pollens, 39% for house dust/dust mite, 22% for fungi, and 54% for fleas. Agreement between ID allergy test and ELISA scores for all pollens was only 10% greater than that expected by chance alone, and a kappa value of 0.17 confirmed poor test agreement. The greatest disparity in results was seen in dogs with negative ID and positive ELISA results. Median ELISA absorbance values for 15 groups of related allergens were compared in 4 groups of dogs: clinically normal dogs, atopic dogs with positive ID reactivity, suspected atopic dogs with negative ID reactivity, and flea-allergic dogs. There was no significant difference in median ELISA values between clinically normal dogs and flea-allergic dogs, or clinically normal dogs and atopic dogs for any allergen group. Although the ELISA absorbance value for fungal antigens was significantly higher in dogs suspected of being atopic than in clinically normal dogs, there was no significant difference in median ELISA values for any other allergen group. These findings suggested the disparity between ID allergy test and ELISA results was primarily attributable to false-positive ELISA reactions rather than greater ELISA sensitivity.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Ninety-six 1-day-old male broilers were fed a diet containing 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10% of a 1:1 mixture of pyruvic acid (PY) and dihydroxyacetone (DH) for ad libitum consumption for 42 days. Feed intake, body weight gain, and feed efficiency decreased linearly (P < .001) with increasing levels of PY and DH. There were no significant differences among treatments for abdominal fat percentage. Carcass chemical analysis revealed small but significant (P < .05) differences among dietary treatments for protein and fat percentages. In a second experiment, 192 1-day-old male broilers were fed diets containing 5% of PY, lactic acid (LA), citric acid (CI), DH, or glycerol (GY) or mixtures (1:1) of DH or GY in combination with each organic acid. Bird performance was impaired (P < .05) by PY or CI but not by DH or GY. Lactic acid reduced (P < .05) feed intake by 9% without affecting weight gain. Lactic acid plus DH, CI plus DH, and CI plus GY mixtures decreased (P < .05) bird performance but other combinations had no effect. Pyruvic acid or CI decreased abdominal fat and carcass lipid percentages. Dihydroxyacetone increased (P < .05) carcass lipid percentage and GY increased (P < .05) abdominal fat percentage. Lactic acid plus DH increased (P < .05) carcass lipid percentage. Only PY and CI decreased carcass fat deposition, but they also impaired broiler performance.

Seven atopic dogs underwent intradermal allergy testing with 46 inhalant antigens before and after administration of a tiletamine/zolazepam solution (4 mg/kg of body weight, IV). This anesthetic protocol had no significant effect on the intradermal response caused by histamine, whole flea extract, or various inhalant allergens. Short-acting chemical restraint induced by the drug combination facilitated the intradermal testing procedure.

Abstract
A bovine leukemia virus (BLV) control program was instituted at a high-prevalence, purebred Holstein dairy. The specific control program required single use of needles and obstetrical sleeves, disinfection of tattoo equipment before use, dehorning by use of electrical burning devices, replacement of whole milk feeding with high-quality milk replacer, and heat treatment of colostrum before feeding. The effect of the program was estimated by comparing the pre- (1987) and postintervention (1989) prevalences of BLV-agar gel immunodiffusion titers within particular heifer age cohorts (0 to 90, 91 to 180, 181 to 360 days, and 361 days to parturition). Random serologic testing was conducted quarterly within each cohort, but was analyzed on a combined yearly basis. Seroprevalence of BLV decreased in all age cohorts greater than 180 days old, with significant decreases in the 361 days to parturition (P = 0.003) and the combined 181 days to parturition cohorts (P = 0.0004). Prevalence within the latter cohort decreased from 0.44 in 1987 to 0.17 in 1989. These results were obtained without either culling or segregation of BLV-agar gel immunodiffusion-positive cattle.

Abstract
Purebred Suffolk, Hampshire and Dorset lamb and yearling rams (n=753), underwent performance testing from 1986 to 1989. Scrotal circumference, birth date and entry weight were recorded for each ram entering the test station. Mean age in days at entry, weight (lbs), and scrotal circumference (SC; cm) were greatest for the Hampshire rams. For all rams combined (Dorset, Hampshire and Suffolk), the mean SC by month of age revealed rapid growth from 2 to 6 mo, with a 3- to 6-mo mean SC significantly (P</=0.05) larger than the mean SC for the previous month. From 6 to 12 mo there was no difference (P>0.05) for mean SC measurement and a less rapid increase in SC diameter. Between 12 and 13 mo a significant increase (P</=0.05) was noted in the mean SC measure. Hampshire rams had a significantly larger SC (P</=0.05) than Dorset rams at 3 mo and at 10 to 12 mo of age; Suffolk rams had a larger SC (P</=0.05) than Dorset rams at 9 to 12 mo. The mean SC for Hampshire and Suffolk rams differed only at 3 mo of age (P</=0.05). Simple regression analysis for SC vs log of age in days described the best fit of the data for predicting SC. For all breeds combined, the polynomial relationship was SC(cm) = -143.05 + 137.71log(age) - 27.073[log(age)](2). Most of the variability (r(2) = 0.738) in SC measurement in younger (2 to 12 mo) purebred Dorset, Hampshire and Suffolk rams was attributable to age of the ram in days. The currently recommended point-score system for evaluating ram breeding soundness could lead to discounting younger rams that have the potential to be satisfactory sires but that do not score high enough due to the influence of age vs SC development. In selecting sires, breed differences must be taken into consideration since the SC of Hampshire rams was different from that of Dorset and Suffolk rams at 3 mo of age and from Dorset rams at 10 to 12 mo of age.

Abstract
Data on selected variables which influence the epidemiology of cattle diseases caused by Theileria parva were assembled and entered in a computerised geographical information system. Variables studied included the distributions of major hosts (cattle and buffalo), the vector ticks (Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and related species) and the reported presence of East Coast fever, corridor disease and January disease. In addition, the distribution of climatic suitability for R appendiculatus was assessed using the model CLIMEX run on an interpolated climate database developed for Africa. Distribution maps of each variable were produced. The potential value of geographical information systems in studies of disease epidemiology and control is discussed, with examples of how sensitivity may be enhanced by the inclusion of additional variables. In addition, subject areas in which poor data quality and inadequate data standardisation may limit the use of these systems are identified and discussed.

Abstract
All practicing veterinarians working with herds and flocks are consulted on animal population problems. These problems may reflect diseases with high morbidity or high mortality rates or other events that impair productivity. In either case, the ultimate goal of the veterinary practitioner is to control the problem and to prevent its recurrence, while keeping the cost of interventional strategies at a minimum. A systematic approach to outbreak investigation is a successful means of achieving the objectives of control and prevention. This approach, although described in a stepwise manner, is not meant to be rigidly applied, but rather should serve as a guide for the investigator. Structured investigations facilitate the efforts of both inexperienced and veteran practitioners. Otherwise, experienced practitioners might develop biased conclusions owing to a specific area of expertise or interest, or because of the influence of previous experience with similar cases. The veterinarian should assume a leadership role in outbreak investigation and should not hesitate to consult with specialists if needed. Although all population problems do not warrant a thorough investigation, the systematic approach just presented, when used for complex problems, increases the probability of establishing definitive, accurate conclusions.

Abstract
There are over 18,000 Inuit in the Northwest Territories. As a group they have the highest birth rate, the lowest cesarean section rate and one of the highest perinatal death rates in Canada. We reviewed the obstetric experience of 512 Inuit women who either gave birth at Stanton Yellowknife Hospital or were referred from Yellowknife and gave birth at a southern facility between January 1981 and December 1985. Our experience is consistent with that documented in earlier reviews, which concluded that Inuit women tend to have efficient uterine action, to endure labour well and to rarely have dystocia. During the periods covered by these reviews delivery was frequently in the settlements; now hospital delivery is the norm. Substantial improvements in perinatal outcome are evident, but there remains a considerable gap between the northern and southern experience. Those attempting further progress must recognize that the need for obstetric care away from the home community is not fully appreciated by Inuit women, their families or their communities.

Abstract
Twenty horses of various ages had inadvertently ingested alfalfa hay contaminated with Senecio vulgaris. Among them, 4 died of liver disease. Blood was collected from affected horses at monthly intervals for 7 months and at the 9th and 14th months. The following serum enzymes and chemical items were assayed: aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, sorbitol dehydrogenase, total bilirubin, BUN, glucose, cholesterol, inorganic phosphate, calcium, total protein, and albumin. Amino acid profiles, conjugated bile acids, sulfobromophthalein clearance times, and liver histopathologic changes via serial biopsies were also monitored. Liver histopathologic changes revealed lesions progressively increasing in severity. Aspartate aminotransferase and plasma amino acid ratios indicated chronic liver degeneration (0.05 level of significance). gamma-Glutamyl transferase and lactate dehydrogenase as well as BUN values fluctuated, but returned to within reference values. Horses appeared clinically normal 14 months after intoxication, but were unable to tolerate stress of exercise.

Abstract
A total of 43 horses were used for the study of the pharyngeal bacterial flora. The median value of the number of bacteria in the group of 19 normal horses was 3.8 x 10(4) cfu/g of secretions. This value was 6.4 x 10(4)cfu/g in horses with grade I pharyngitis, 1.3 x 10(5) cfu/g in horses with grade II pharyngitis and 3.5 x 10(6) cfu/g in horses affected with grades III and IV pharyngitis. Corynebacterium spp, coagulase-negative staphylococci, Nocardia spp, Moraxella spp and Enterobacter spp were the most frequently encountered bacteria in the normal animals as well as in horses affected with pharyngitis of grades I or II. Moraxella spp were isolated in 87.5% of the horses with pharyngitis of grades III and IV, followed by Streptococcus zooepidemicus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, coagulase-negative staphylococci and Enterobacter spp. No fastidious bacteria, nor strict anaerobes were isolated from any of the 43 horses. None of the microorganisms were found in 100% of the animals and the majority of the isolates were opportunistic bacteria. These results demonstrate that the isolation of Moraxella spp and S. zooepidemicus in large numbers is frequent in horses with lymphoid follicular hyperplasia grades III and IV. Fungi were isolated in small numbers from two or three horses in each group.

Abstract
Thirty infertile patients with ovulation defects and galactorrhea conceived after medical therapy: four after clomiphene stimulation (with or without hCG) and 26 after receiving CB-154 (2-Br-alpha-ergocryptine or bromergocryptine). Pregnancies were followed closely; sellar tomography and perimetry were repeated at 36 weeks' and 8 weeks' post partum. One patient required transsphenoidal adenectomy because of acute pituitary enlargement. Two developed minimal asymptomatic fossa enlargement. Lactation was suppressed with Lactostat in the first eight patients delivered; hyperprolactinemia, amenorrhea, and galactorrhea recurred. Five of eight showed asymptomatic enlargement of the sella. Bromergocryptine was used to suppress lactation in the rest. Long-term bromergocryptine therapy resulted in the restoration of euprolactinemic ovulatory cycles in all patients. These data suggest that patients with ovulation defects associated with galactorrhea can conceive with medical therapy now available. However, there is a risk of significant pituitary enlargement during pregnancy and the puerperium. Lactation should be suppressed with bromergocryptine.

Abstract
Despite the availability of rubella vaccine the incidence of the congenital rubella syndrome has been increasing in certain regions of Canada. Perhaps this is not surprising in view of the known irregular cyclic activity of rubella virus in a community and the fact that the percentage of seropositive women of childbearing age has not changed appreciable since the vaccine was introduced. Clearly vaccine is not being administered to sufficient numbers of women at risk. Until a much higher percentage of women of childbearing age possess rubella antibody, the costly problem of congenital rubella syndrome is likely to be with us. Common rubella problems relate to four categories: the exposed pregnant woman, laboratory diagnosis, the infant with suspected congenital rubella and the vaccine. One of the most common questions about the vaccine is the following: Can recently vaccinated individuals disseminate vaccine and infect seronegative contact? The answer is No.
