Abstract
Acanthocephalan and spargana parasites were identified within a body wall mass during exploratory surgery in a wild green tree snake. Acanthocephalan parasites have not previously been reported in this species. Surgical excision, the treatment of choice, could not be achieved because of the extensive infiltration of the coelomic cavity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish which skin diseases occur in crocodiles, particularly those on farms, to indicate the relative frequency of each particular disease and to provide information on pathogenesis, especially in regard to lesions with two or more pathogens present. DESIGN A gross and microscopic retrospective (period of 1989 to 1995) and current (1996 to 1997) examination of skin lesions in crocodiles in Queensland and the Northern Territory. RESULT Skin lesions were obtained from crocodiles on nine farms, from a group of experimental animals and from one adult found dead in the wild. A total of 203 lesions from 180, mostly young, crocodiles was examined; 119 lesions were from retrospectively examined cases and 84 were recent. The relative frequencies of four presumed primary pathogens in lesions were Dermatophilus sp 28.1%, fungi 14.8%, poxvirus 3.4% and probable Mycobacterium sp 2.5%. In addition, other bacteria of unknown significance were present in many lesions, and there was one case of presumed Paratrichosoma crocodilus infection. In 32.5% of lesions, multiple pathogens were identified. CONCLUSION Dermatophilosis is the most common and probably the most important skin disease of crocodiles in Australia, but it is frequently complicated by concurrent infection with fungi or other microorganisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence and manifestations of fibropapillomatosis in green turtles in Indonesia, to identify any relationship between fibropapillomatosis and concurrent parasitic infection, to ascertain the effect of fibropapillomatosis on health, and to examine whether environment might have an effect on the prevalence of fibropapillomatosis. PROCEDURE 4407 green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and 401 hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) were examined. The occurrence of fibropapillomatosis was correlated with sex, maturity, curved carapace length, body weight/curved carapace length ratio, the number and distribution of tumours on the skin, parasite burdens, some haematological variables and the region of capture. RESULTS Fibropapillomatosis was seen only in green turtles, and the overall prevalence in these was 21.5%. This prevalence increased with the curved carapace length up to 85 cm. The average number of tumours per affected turtle was 5 +/- SD 4.1 (range, 1 to 29), and was negatively correlated with the body weight/curved carapace length ratio (rs = -0.8; P = 0.001). The red blood cell count in turtles with fibropapilloma was lower than in non-fibropapilloma turtles captured and examined at the same time (P = 0.001). The prevalence of fibropapilloma in turtles captured near densely populated, industrial regions (26.3%) was greater than in turtles from sparsely populated areas (17.7%). CONCLUSION Fibropapillomatosis in green sea turtles in Indonesia is of moderate occurrence: young mature turtles (curved carapace length = 85 cm) are most frequently affected. Fibropapilloma adversely affects health of turtles. Fluke infestation seems not to be a causal factor, but viral infection, perhaps with concurrent stress of environmental origin, seems likely.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of praziquantel as a treatment for cardiovascular flukes in turtles. PROCEDURE Six green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) spontaneously infected with cardiovascular flukes (Digenea: Spirorchiidae) were treated orally with praziquantel, and necropsied 3 or 7 days later to look for flukes in the heart and major blood vessels. Six similar animals were maintained as untreated controls. RESULTS Absence of flukes in treated, but not control turtles, indicated that a one day course of treatment at a dose rate of 3 x 50 mg/kg body weight is effective. CONCLUSION This result should be of value for preventing disease in wild caught green turtles introduced into farms or aquaria.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine whether sub-optimal temperature induced stress and immunosuppression in farmed saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) hatchlings. DESIGN A clinico-pathological study. ANIMALS A total of 140 hatchlings were used. PROCEDURE Body weight and length, plasma corticosterone and immunoglobulin concentrations and total and differential white blood cell counts were measured in 140 hatchlings from five clutches divided between five water temperature treatment groups. Initially all groups were housed at 32 degrees C for 10 weeks, then two groups (L, LC) were changed to low temperature (28 degrees C) and two groups (H, HC) to high temperature (36 degrees C), while one group (C) remained at 32 degrees C. The LC and HC groups were maintained at these temperatures for 10 days, after which the water temperature of both groups was returned to 32 degrees C. Blood samples were collected twice (at 6 and 9 weeks of age) before the initial temperature change, and at 10 days and 4 weeks after the initial temperature change (at 11.5 and 14 weeks of age). RESULTS Except for an increase in plasma corticosterone in the HC group and a decrease in the L group when the temperature change was first introduced, changes in plasma corticosterone were not significant. There were no significant changes in immunoglobulin concentrations. There were, however, significant decreases in the total white cell and lymphocyte counts in the LC group after the temperature was decreased to 28 degrees C, and an increase in these counts after water temperature was returned to 32 degrees C. Clutch of origin had significant effects on body weight and length gains, and there were negative relationships between body weight and corticosterone concentrations and between body weight and immunoglobulin concentrations. CONCLUSIONS As haematological changes indicative of stress were not associated with significant changes in serum corticosterone, immunosuppression in young crocodiles may be independent of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cortical axis.

Abstract
The gross and microscopic pathology of a fungal septicaemia caused by the zygomycete. Mucor amphibiorum in 27 free-ranging cane toads, Bufo marinus, in Australia is described. Seven of the 27 toads had clinical signs of illness when discovered and five of these seven were moribund. Multiple granulomas were found in many organs, and in massive infections granulomas tended to coalesce. Liver, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder, heart and lung were most commonly involved, but granulomas also occurred in subcutaneous lymph spaces, skin, gastro-intestinal tract, voluntary muscle, bone, cranial cavity and the oral cavity. Single lesions appeared grossly as a lemon coloured nodule < or = 5 mm in diameter. Histologically, the primary lesion was a granuloma composed of multinucleate giant cells, macrophages, occasional lymphocytes and eosinophils surrounding the distinctive sphaerules of M. amphibiorum. Fibroblasts occurred in greater numbers at the periphery and collagen formed a dense fibrous capsule around some nodules. A less common lesion resembled a microabscess and consisted of mononuclear cells, neutrophils and eosinophils surrounded by macrophages. Many of the centrally placed mixed inflammatory cells appeared necrotic. This reaction appeared to be more acute. Both types of lesions sometimes occurred concurrently, but the latter was less common. The pattern of lesions and natural history of M. amphibiorum suggested that ingestion of contaminated soil may have been the route of infection.

Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between the local (spermatic granuloma) and systemic events after unilateral vasectomy in six rams. Spermatic microgranulomas were first observed at 4 weeks post vasectomy (PV), at which time lymphocytes, chiefly CD4+ (helper/inducer) cells, were incorporated into the periphery of the phagocytic wall. Although plasma cells accumulated around blood vessels near these early granulomas, they were not incorporated into them. All sectioned vas deferens contained additional microscopic spermatic granulomas away from the point of sectioning, as did one-third of cauda epididymides on the vasectomised side. There were significant (P < 0.001) increases in T-lymphocytes, especially CD4 cells and plasma cells (chiefly IgG-containing) within the granulomas at each successive PV interval. Concurrent enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay indicated initial presence of IgG and IgM antisperm antibody in serum between 2 and 4 weeks PV. There were significant increases of IgG (P < 0.01) and IgM (P < 0.001) throughout the experiment but IgA antisperm antibody was negligible.

Abstract
The distribution and density of ovine MHC class I and class II antigens in normal, acanthotic and malignantly transformed ovine skin was investigated using monoclonal antibodies and an immunoperoxidase technique. The subjects were sheep that had been exposed to high levels of sunlight for more than 6 years. The expression of MHC class II antigens in the plasma membrane of cells within the normal epidermis was restricted to basally located dendritic and mononuclear cells. Normal keratinocytes did not express MHC class II antigens. However, we observed low levels of intracellular MHC class II expression in both acanthotic and neoplastic keratinocytes. Expression of MHC class I antigens was variable in normal and acanthotic epithelium; it was usually present, but of low intensity in very early ovine squamous cell carcinoma and was increased in small, but morphologically typical, tumors. Tumors originating on the nose, which are more invasive than those on the ear, were found to express significantly less MHC class I (P < 0.05). Thus, an association between tumor invasiveness and low level expression of MHC class I was apparent. This may have diagnostic value and highlights a mechanism by which neoplastic cells may evade immune surveillance by T cells.

Abstract
Thirty-eight young crocodiles that were emaciated and were euthanased or were found dead on 12 farms in Irian Jaya were examined post mortem. Major diseases were coccidiosis (nine crocodiles), pentastomiasis (four), visceral gout (two) and bacterial pneumonia and septicaemia (two). Other diseases and infections were steatitis, fungal pneumonia, gastric capillariasis, haemogregarine infection, ascariasis, filarioid infection and the presence of flukes in the intestine, kidney and blood. Multiple parasitism due to the collection of hatchlings in the wild was considered the primary cause of the ill-thrift and death of the crocodiles.

Abstract
The prevalence and distribution of lymphocyte subpopulations in normal and acanthotic ovine skin were investigated using monoclonal antibody immunocytochemistry. CD8+ cells were predominant in the epidermis of both normal and acanthotic skin, but were CD8+ cells, CD4+ cells and T19+ cells infrequent in normal epidermis. Within the dermis of normal skin, there were significantly greater numbers of CD4+ and T19+ cells situated around the superficial dermal vessels than in any other region examined. The majority of the CD8+ cells adjoined vessels, but the proportion that did not was greater for CD8+ than for CD4+ or T19+ cells. The CD4+ and CD8+ subsets were represented equally in adnexa. T cells were of memory phenotype. B cells and naive T cells, both of which express the CD45RA antigen, were rarely seen and tended to be associated with vessels in both normal and acanthotic skin. None of the T19+ cells (which are gamma delta+) resembled the dendritic gamma delta cells seen in murine epidermis. Acanthotic skin was strikingly different to normal skin. There was a greater abundance of T cells, particularly CD4+ cells, in acanthotic epidermis and the numbers of CD8+ and T19+ cells, and to a greater extent CD4+ cells, were greater at the dermal-epidermal junction. There were more CD4+ and CD8+ cells in the superficial dermal stroma of acanthotic skin. Within the dermis of acanthotic skin, T cells were concentrated near vessels but the apportioning of T cells between stromal/adnexal and vessel-associated sites differed from normal. Such observations suggest that migration away from perivascular sites and into the stroma may be controlled separately for subregions of skin and for each T cell subset. The role of this altered nonrandom migration of T cells in skin chronically exposed to ultra violet radiation is uncertain.

Abstract
Sequential immunohistochemical studies of the lymphoreticular responses of Bali cattle (Bos javanicus syn. Bos sondaicus) after inoculation with the Jembrana disease virus were carried out using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase test for immunoglobulin containing cell assessment and the indirect immunoperoxidase test for lymphocyte subset assessment. The prevalence of immunoglobulin G-containing cells declined during the acute phase of the disease but became significantly elevated during convalescence. This trend was consistent with serological responses previously observed using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Temporary immunosuppression appeared to occur during the acute phase of the disease as indicated by a decrease in the immunoglobulin G-containing cells in the lymphoid organs and an observed decrease in the BoCD4/BoCD8 lymphocyte ratio in lymph node follicles.

Abstract
To investigate husbandry-disease associations in farmed crocodiles 7 farms in Queensland and the Northern Territory were visited and details of past and present farm design and husbandry practices were recorded. In addition pathological examination of 300 (mostly young) crocodiles was carried out (85 necropsied, one biopsied and 214 examined retrospectively). Mortality rate and occurrence of disease, especially opportunistic infections with bacteria and fungi, were highest during winter months and in farms located at greater latitudes. A difference in the presence and prevalence of disease between the initial establishment phase of Northern Territory crocodile farms (1984-87) and currently (1988-91) was apparent; parasitic infections are now relatively infrequent and bacterial septicaemias and mycoses less common as a result of some provision of artificial heating for juveniles. Gross and microscopic changes observed in visceral and periarticular gout, bacterial hepatitis/septicaemia, deep and superficial mycosis, pentastomiasis and other parasitic infections are described.

Abstract
Six Indonesian buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) were inoculated intravenously with 10(5) Trypanosoma evansi, examined clinically, haematologically and serologically, and then killed 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 or 12 weeks after infection for detailed pathological study. Relapsing fever was related to the waves of parasitaemia and fluctuations of pulse and respiration rates. Anaemic mucous membranes, depression, weakness, refusal to walk, loss of appetite and emaciation were seen. Body weight, packed cell volume, total platelet and red cell counts, and haemoglobin values were below those of two uninfected control buffaloes, as well as below the normal range; on the other hand antibody titres against T. evansi in infected animals were all above those in controls. Emaciation, serous atrophy of fat, hydropericardium, petechial to larger haemorrhages in the pericardium, pneumonia, congested liver and spleen, oedematous enlargement of the superficial lymph nodes and hyperplastic bone marrow were the major gross pathological changes. Histologically, the severity of the disease increased from 1 to 7 weeks after infection and became less obvious at 12 weeks. The most consistent lesions were interstitial pneumonia, interstitial myocarditis, splenic multifocal necrosis, interstitial myositis and hyperplastic bone marrow. The last three lesions appear not to have been reported previously in T. evansi infection in buffaloes or other animals. The clinicopathological findings in this study show that T. evansi is both an intravascular and extravascular parasite.

Abstract
The essential steps in embryology of the genitalia and its sexual differentiation, are briefly reviewed. The major intersex states in domestic ruminants and pigs are briefly considered. Major attention is directed to anomalies of the reproductive organs of mature female and male animals that are likely to compromise fertility. Emphasis is placed on clinical and pathologic findings and on occurrence and pathogenesis of recorded defects.

Abstract
The sites of tissue accumulation in lactating goats of the organochlorine insecticide endosulfan were studied. Twelve lactating goats were dosed orally with endosulfan (1 mg/kg body weight per day) for 28 days. Groups of 3 animals were killed on days 1, 8, 15, and 21 after endosulfan treatment ended and their tissues examined for the presence of endosulfan. Total residues of alpha and beta endosulfan and endosulfan sulphate (mg/kg) were detected in kidney (0.29), gastro-intestinal tract (0.20), liver (0.12), brain (0.06), muscle and spleen (0.04), lung and heart (0.01) and milk (0.02) on the first sampling day but within 15 days, concentrations had fallen to < 0.01 mg/kg in all tissues except kidney (0.20). Endosulfan could not be detected in animals 21 days after dosing had ceased. The residue in milk could only be detected on day 1 of sampling. This study indicates that kidney rather than fatty tissue should be used to monitor the presence of endosulfan in animals intended for human consumption.

Abstract
Epididymal spermatic granulomas from five adult (greater than 4 years old) rams from a commercial flock were evaluated by quantitative histologic methods. Sections were stained for isotype specific immunoglobulin (Ig)-containing cells or specific lymphocyte subsets, as indicated by plasma membrane staining with monoclonal antibodies (MoAb). For the purpose of analysis, individual spermatic granulomas were allocated to one of three groups (early, resolving, or intermediate) on the basis of histologic examination. Ig-containing cells were most prevalent in early spermatic granulomas, and IgG-containing cells predominated in all spermatic granulomas regardless of their presumed age. IgM immunoglobulin-containing cells were the next in prevalence, and IgA-containing cells were infrequent. Assessment of lymphocyte subsets confirmed that lymphocytes present were of both T- and B-cell lineage and were well represented in all spermatic granulomas. CD4+ (MHC Class II-restricted "helper") T-cells were more prevalent in early spermatic granulomas than in intermediate or resolving types, while CD8+ (MHC Class I-restricted, "cytotoxic/suppressor") T-cells were more prevalent in spermatic granulomas of the intermediate type. These results suggest that in addition to an essentially foreign body reaction to extravasated spermatozoa, both local production of antibody and accumulation of a variety of B- and T-lymphocytes are present in ovine spermatic granulomas.

Abstract
Experimental infection of Bali cattle (Bos sondaicus) with blood from a case of Jembrana disease caused a well-defined pathological response. The disease was generalized except for the central nervous system which did not show significant cellular reactive changes. Following a general lymphoreticular reaction in the first week (Phase 1), the predominant effect was an intense non-follicular proliferative response by reticulum (dendritic) cells and lymphoblastoid cells in lymphoid organs (Phase 2) and a similar infiltrative and proliferative process in liver, kidneys, adrenal medulla and elsewhere. In the kidneys, glomerular hypercellular swelling occurred which was associated with uraemia. Pulmonary alveolar cells reacted strongly to infection by swelling and proliferation especially in the anterior lobes. Mononuclear cell infiltration accompanied this response. In lymph nodes and spleen, a marked lymphoid follicular reaction and plasma cell formation developed from the fifth week of infection (Phase 3). The cytology and histological distribution of proliferative changes in the lymphoid system suggests that, during the acute phase of the disease, a predominantly T lymphocytic reaction takes place which may be associated with transient immunosuppression. Residual lesions occurred up to day 60 post-infection. In all affected tissues pleomorphic basophilic, intracytoplasmic inclusions occurred, especially from the second week until about the fifth week of infection, but persisted in small numbers for more than 2 months. By light microscopy both minute basophilic granular forms (Type 1) and large intravascuolar (Type 2) inclusions were consistently found in reticular cells, lymphoblasts, macrophages including Kupffer cells, pulmonary alveolar cells and occasionally in vascular endothelium. These structures appear to be of diagnostic value.

Abstract
To identify causes of mortality in young captive crocodiles, detailed necropsy and laboratory examination was done on 54 (30 Crocodylus porosus, 22 C. novaeguineae, 2 of unrecorded species). Although multiple infections often confounded interpretation it was concluded that the major infectious diseases, of approximately equal importance, were coccidiosis, bacterial septicaemia with Gram-negative organisms, and metazoan parasitism including ascariasis and pentastomiasis. A range of other lesions and agents was recognised, including keratitis, enteritis of unknown aetiology, non-suppurative encephalitis, traumatic peritonitis and trematodes located in renal tubules, gut and blood vessels. Some crocodiles in poor condition had only mild lesions associated with metazoan parasites and the cause of death or illness could not be clearly determined, although it was considered likely that adaptation failure was a contributing factor.

Abstract
Genitalia from 1000 feral male goats derived from western Queensland and New South Wales were examined after slaughter at an abattoir and the prevalence of abnormalities determined. Ulcerative balanoposthitis, considered due to caprine herpesvirus infection, was observed in 11 animals (1.1%); acidophilic intranuclear inclusions were found in 7 of these. Other conditions included focal hypoplasia of seminiferous tubules in 2 bucks (0.2%), segmental aplasia of the epididymis (one buck, 0.1%), bulbourethral gland cysts with contained aggregations (33 bucks, 3.3%) and haemangiosarcoma of the bulbourethral gland in one animal. The low prevalence of several conditions such as spermatic granuloma, cryptorchidism, and testicular hypoplasia, was attributed largely to the fact that the bucks examined were horned so that the recognised association between genital abnormalities and polledness did not apply.

Abstract
The effect of ipsilateral parotid lymphadenectomy on growth of lesions of aural squamous cell carcinoma in 10 adult ewes was compared over a 6-month period, with matched, tumour-affected controls that were not subjected to parotid lymphadenectomy. There was no significant difference between groups, indicating that the regional lymph node had no influence on the growth of the tumour.

Abstract
The peroxidase-antiperoxidase method was used to quantify immunoglobulin (Ig)-containing cells at the host-tumour interface in ovine aural squamous cell carcinoma lesions at various stages of development. IgM-containing cells were never observed; only scattered, but strongly staining, IgA-containing cells were present. IgG-containing cells predominated; their prevalence increased from 0.17 +/- 0.34 cells per high power field (hpf; mean +/- standard deviation) in precursor lesions to a maximum of 13.6 +/- 2.6 cells per hpf in overt tumours which had not metastasized. Their prevalence in overt tumours which had metastasized was 4.6 +/- 3.9 cells per hpf. Quantitation of pyroninophils in sections stained by the methyl green-pyronin method showed a greater prevalence of plasma cells than IgG-containing cells, but a similar pattern of change was apparent. Mast cells were most prevalent in early stages, but no significant change in eosinophil numbers was observed.

Abstract
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for detecting antibody to Tritrichomonas foetus using both whole cell antigen (WCA) and membrane protein antigen (MPA). The test was used to detect specific antibody in serum, preputial washings and seminal plasma samples from 7 adult bulls which were vaccinated subcutaneously on 3 occasions with a membrane protein vaccine against T. foetus var brisbane in an oil adjuvant, and from 4 unvaccinated control animals. One month after administration of the third dose of vaccine, vaccinated and control bulls were repeatedly challenged with the live vaccine strain of the T. foetus. A steady increase in serum antibody titre was detected after each inoculation of vaccine when both antigens were used in the ELISA. However, MPA was more sensitive. After challenge, vaccinated bulls developed an increased titre. No specific antibody was detected in control bulls, except in one bull after challenge in which seroconversion was detected. The serum antibody titres of both groups of animals were also measured with the microagglutination test which proved less sensitive than the ELISA. Antibody titres to both antigens, although lower than in serum, were detected in the seminal plasma of vaccinated animals. The control bulls remained non-responsive. No antibody was detected by ELISA in preputial washings from either control or vaccinated bulls prior to challenge. Post-challenge, some of the vaccinated bulls were responsive with both antigens whereas the control bulls remained negative.

Abstract
Antibody responses in serum and semen, and immunoglobulin containing cell (ICC) populations in the genitalia of bulls were compared after inoculating Brucella abortus strain 19 into the seminal vesicles of two bulls (ISV route) and into testes in two other bulls (IT route). Bulls seroconverted as early as 1 week post-infection (PI). Peak serum titres as determined by the serum agglutination test (SAT), complement fixation test (CFT) and ELISA occurred at PI weeks 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Highest titres were in IT inoculated bulls. Seminal antibodies against B. arbotus S19 were demonstrated from 2 weeks PI by both the SAT and the Rose Bengal Test (RBT) and highest titres occurred at PI weeks 3 and 4. Examination of immunoglobulins (Ig) in semen, however, revealed no significant differences of Ig isotypes between infected and control animals at any examination time. When bulls were killed at 7 weeks PI, quantitation of ICC in genital sections stained by the peroxidase-anti-peroxidase method revealed an overwhelming predominance of IgG containing cells in inflamed organs. In all cases IgG1- and IgG2-containing cells were prevalent, and present in approximately equal numbers. IgA-containing cells were second in prevalence in inflamed tissues while IgM cells were always in low percentage. High prevalence of ICC in infected genitalia, associated with elevated specific seminal antibodies but not with increased seminal Ig indicates that most Ig remains localised in tissues and is not transferred into genital secretions.

Abstract
The peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique was used to identify cytoplasmic immunoglobulins in the accessory sex glands of 15 normal bulls and 13 bulls with inflammation of the ASG. Immunoglobulin containing cells (ICC) of the types IgA, IgM, total IgG, IgG1 and IgG2 were measured and their percentages expressed. In accessory sex glands from normal bulls, IgA containing cells were the most frequent in prostate and bulbourethral glands (86.7% and 86.1%, respectively of all ICC present) whereas in the ampulla, IgG containing cells comprised 78.6% of the ICC. IgG1 and IgG2 containing cells were present in all the accessory sex glands in approximately equal numbers. Frequencies of IgM containing cells in the ampulla, prostate and bulbourethral glands were 6.3%, 4.0% and 3.7%, respectively. Although all isotypes of ICC were present in the seminal vesicle, the very low number precluded accurate quantification. In inflamed ampulla, seminal vesicle, bulbourethral gland and colliculus seminalis, IgG containing cells were the most frequent ICC with values of 66.2%, 83.0%, 69.0% and 53.5%, respectively; IgA containing cells were the second in prevalence with values of 21.5%, 10.3% 19.3% and 40.5%, respectively. The contribution of ICC to the locally protective immunoglobulins in accessory sex gland secretions is discussed.

Abstract
A detailed description of lesions of presumed congenital origin involving the accessory sex glands of 11 bulls is given. All of these lesions would have been detectable by careful clinical examination during bull evaluation. Evidence presented here supports the view that congenital abnormalities such as bilateral ampulla-seminal vesicle fusion, ampulla cysts associated with luminal constriction, cysts of urogenital sinus origin, prostatic appendage, and persistent remnant of the urachus could sometimes be responsible for development of inflammatory conditions in the accessory sex glands. Anomalies such as segmental aplasia or hypoplasia of mesonephric duct derivations, or single ampulla-seminal vesicle fusion in which the ducts opened freely in the colliculus seminalis were not seen to be associated with inflammation in the accessory sex glands. The significance of these findings is considered.

Abstract
Scrotal circumference (SC), testicular diameter (TD) and testicular weight (TW) were measured at necropsy of 148 Merino rams of varying age (yearling: 110, 2- to 3-year-old: 5, 4-year-old: 28, greater than 7-year-old: 5). These rams, although culled from flocks in north western Queensland for poor conformation or advancing age, had no clinically palpable or gross necropsy lesions of the genitalia. Despite the fact that SC measurement was performed at necropsy on scrota with greatly varying wool cover and its diverse content of plant material (burrs and grass seeds), the correlation of SC with TW was positive, high and significant (r = 0.92, P less than 0.01). This correlation was greater than that between TD and TW (r = 0.91, P less than 0.01) even though both were measured after dissection of the scrotal contents. The clinically convenient SC measurement deserves wider application as an estimate of testicular weight and therefore fertility in rams.

Abstract
The bulbourethral glands of 323 Bos indicus or B. indicus crossbred bulls more than 1 1/2 years old were examined in an abattoir study. Bulbourethral adenitis was diagnosed grossly and confirmed by histological examination in 4 (1.2%). Unilateral chronic interstitial inflammation was seen in 2 cases; one of these was associated with a degenerative-type seminal vesiculitis. In the others adenitis was bilateral; in one case it was associated with a concretion and foreign (plant) material in the principal duct of the left bulbourethral gland; in the other bilateral case, numerous calculi were present and microscopically, a chronic active and diffuse inflammation was observed. Chemical analysis of the calculi showed calcium oxalate and tricalcium phosphate to be the most important components. Corynebacterium spp was isolated from the lesion with multiple calculi but attempts to isolate Chlamydia spp, Mycoplasma spp and Brucella abortus from the 4 adenitis cases were unsuccessful. Congenital abnormalities such as glandular fusion (2.2%) or unilateral aplasia (0.6%) were also observed. Cysts were the most common finding (19.2%), and duct dilation was frequent (7.1%). The significance of these findings in relation to fertility is considered.

Abstract
Thirteen rams with serological evidence of Brucella ovis exposure (CFT of 1:8 or greater), but with no or only mild epididymitis, were selected from a ram flock. Serum, semen, preputial washings and fluids from the accessory sex glands (ASGF) and testis and epididymis (TEF) were examined and immunoglobulin (Ig) concentrations estimated. Genital tissues were examined histologically and the percentages of class specific immunoglobulin containing cells (ICC) determined. Eleven of these rams had histological evidence of active inflammation consistent with B. ovis infection; the organisam was cultured from the semen of 7. IgA concentration was high in semen (mean +/- standard deviation of 5.03 +/- 1.78 mg/ml) and ASGF (9.18 +/- 7.28 mg/ml). These levels were much higher than those recorded in noninfected rams. IgA concentration was low in serum (0.78 +/- 0.55 mg/ml) and TEF (0.59 +/- 0.78 mg/ml). The concentrations of IgG1, IgG2 and IgM were low in all genital fluids sampled and not significantly different from those recorded in noninfected rams. This indicated that infection with B. ovis results in a pronounced IgA response in secretions, mostly from the accessory sex glands. Examinations of ICC, however, revealed that the plasma cell infiltrates of the epididymis, vas deferens, ampulla and seminal vesicle were predominantly IgG-containing (92.4, 97.2, 79.4 and 91.9% respectively). Fewer IgM-containing cells were scattered throughout these tissues, constituting 3.9, 6.3, 0.3 and 6.5% of all ICC, respectively. IgA-containing cells were most frequently seen in the ampulla (9.6% of ICC) where they were located directly beneath the epithelium, suggesting the ampulla as the most prominant location for the local production of IgA.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
A total of 40 mature or aged rams with spontaneous varicocele detected by scrotal palpation were subjected to detailed necropsy examination. Varicocele was bilateral in 22 rams or was located on the left or right sides only, in 8 and 10 rams, respectively. This distribution contrasted with varicocele in man in which the left side is involved in 70 to 100% of cases. Mean sizes of varicoceles in mm (length x diameter) were 117 x 46 and 104 x 45 for the left and right sides, respectively, and they were located high in the pampiniform plexus, approximately 100 mm from the dorsal pole of the corresponding testis. All varicoceles were thrombosed. Changes associated with large varicoceles included testicular mineralisation and occluding thrombosis of testicular vessels. Total testis weight-bodyweight ratio in rams with varicocele (5.8 to 6.4 x 10(-3] was significantly less (P less than 0.05) than in normal (control) rams from the same flocks (7.9 x 10(-3] suggesting that some degree of testicular atrophy resulted from presence of a varicocele.

Abstract
The levels of the immunoglobulins IgA, IgG1, IgG2, and IgM were measured in serum and fluid from various locations in the reproductive tract of normal rams. These fluids included semen, preputial washings, and fluid from the accessory sex glands (ASG), vasa deferens, rete testes, and tissue fluid from the seminal vesicles, bulbourethral glands, epididymal tails and efferent ducts. In addition, the prevalence of specific Ig-containing cells (ICC) was measured in sections of formalin fixed tissues stained by an indirect peroxidase-antiperoxidase labelling technique. Mean IgA levels in semen (1.23 mg/ml) and ASG fluid (0.46 mg/ml), were higher than in serum (0.19 mg/ml) and were at levels higher than IgG1 or IgG2 levels in semen, ASG fluid, and preputial washings, thus confirming the existence of a local immune system primarily in the ASG of ram genitalia. Relatively low concentrations of IgA and IgG in other genital fluids and IgG levels in these fluids were consistent with diffusion from serum. The relatively high prevalence of IgA-containing cells in bulbourethral (56% of all ICC) and prostate (49%) glands confirmed these tissues as major sites of local Ig production. ICC were also found in large numbers beneath pelvic urethral and preputial epithelia, but these were predominantly IgG-containing (88 and 72% respectively).
