Abstract
This study, a case series of 2 patients and a literature review, aims to describe the second and third known cases of delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage after Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty. The suprachoroidal hemorrhage is defined as the presence of blood in the suprachoroidal space; final visual acuity is rarely greater than 0.1 (decimal scale). Both cases presented had known risk factors: high myopia, previous ocular surgeries, arterial hypertension, and being under anticoagulant therapy. The diagnosis of delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage was made at the 24-hour follow-up visit, as they recalled a sudden and tremendous acute pain hours after surgery. Both cases were drained through a scleral approach. Delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage is a rare but devastating consequence that can occur after Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty. Awareness of the most critical risk factors allows for early identification, which is of paramount importance for the prognosis of these patients.

What can Europe learn from HCP knowledge and attitudes towards hepatitis A vaccination in the US? Eur J Public Health 2021. [DOI: 10.1093/eurpub/ckab165.467] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/13/2022] Open
Abstract
Abstract
Background
An estimated >100 million new hepatitis A (hepA) infections occur annually worldwide. Centres for disease control and prevention reported 38795 hepA cases in the US since 2016, and 4475 outbreak-confirmed cases in Europe between 2016-2018. HepA outbreaks resulted mainly from person-to-person contact, especially among homeless, illegal drug users (IDU) and men who have sex with men (MSM). In 2020, we surveyed US health care providers (HCPs) to understand their knowledge and attitudes towards hepA vaccination in these populations at higher risk of infection and complications.
Methods
This was a cross-sectional, web-based survey of 400 HCPs (primary care providers, nurse practitioners, gastroenterologists, internal medicine and infectious disease specialists [IDs], emergency room physicians [ERs]) who had recommended and/or administered hepA vaccines to ≥ 19-year-olds.
Results
85% of 371 HCPs reported recommending hepA vaccine to homeless, 87% of 393 to IDU and 83% of 397 to MSM, although vaccination may not actually occur after recommendation. Results varied by specialty, 16% fewer ERs than IDs reported recommending the vaccine in these at-risk populations. Moreover, 64%, 75% and 71% of all (400) HCPs reported extremely important that homeless, IDU and MSM, respectively, get vaccinated for hepA, while 6%, 7% and 8% of all HCPs reported this as slightly, or not important. Reasons for not recommending hepA vaccine to homeless, IDU and MSM included uncertainty on guidelines (reported by 22/56, 24/50 and 29/66 HCPs, respectively) and low risk of infection (reported by 20/56, 30/50 and 27/66 HCPs, respectively).
Conclusions
Despite recent hepA outbreaks and strengthened recommendations for vaccination in at-risk populations, knowledge gaps persist among US HCPs. This survey may motivate European countries to reinforce national hepA vaccination recommendations and, in parallel, consider efforts to raise vaccination awareness.

Key messages
Education on hepatitis A vaccination recommendations in at-risk populations is needed. Health care providers’ vaccination knowledge plays a critical role to control the hepatitis A outbreak in the US and preventing hepatitis A in Europe.

Baseline characteristics, disease severity and treatment history of patients with atopic dermatitis included in the German AD Registry TREATgermany. J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol 2020; 34:1263-1272. Abstract
BACKGROUND The Atopic Dermatitis (AD) TREATgermany registry was initiated by the German Society for Dermatology (DDG) in 2011 to evaluate the 'real-life' situation of health care for patients with AD. OBJECTIVES Interim data analysis on baseline characteristics as well as current and prescribed systemic treatments of the TREATgermany registry patients. METHODS Patients (≥18 years) with moderate-to-severe AD [objective (o)SCORAD > 20], or with current or previous anti-inflammatory systemic treatment for AD within 24 months, were included and are followed up over at least 24 months. To assess clinical signs, the eczema area severity index (EASI, 0-72), the oSCORAD (0-83) and the Investigator Global Assessment (IGA; 6-point scale) were used. The disease severity was globally scored by the patients [Patient Global Assessment (PGA); six-step Likert scale]. Disease symptoms were assessed by the patient-oriented eczema measure (POEM, 0-28) and numeric rating scales (NRS, 0-10). Health-related quality of life was measured using the dermatological life quality index (DLQI, 0-30). RESULTS A total of 612 patients were recruited across 32 sites between 06/2016 and 01/2019 (mean age: 42.6 ± 14.2 years; mean oSCORAD: 40.8 ± 16.3). The mean POEM score was 16.3 ± 7.5. Pruritus was rated highest among subjective symptoms (NRS: 5.4 ± 2.7). The mean DLQI value was 11.3 ± 7.5. The frequency of arterial hypertension was lower (20.8%) compared with the general population, whilst this was higher for depression (10%). More than 60% of the patients had received systemic glucocorticosteroids, and 36.8% had received cyclosporine A prior to inclusion. Dupilumab was the leading substance documented as either 'current' (12.1%) or 'prescribed' (31.4%) at baseline. CONCLUSIONS These 'real-life' data clearly demonstrate the substantial disease burden. Most of TREATgermany patients were already treated with or prescribed dupilumab at baseline. Moreover, current findings indicate the urgent need for further alternative agents in order to achieve a perceptible improvement of quality of life of patients with moderate-to-severe AD.

Abstract
Daily glatiramer acetate (GA) 20 mg/1.0 mL is a first-line treatment for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). To reduce the occurrence of injection pain and local injection site reactions (LISRs), a reduced volume formulation of GA was developed. This study compared pain and LISRs after injecting the marketed and the novel formulations. RRMS patients currently injecting GA participated in this multicenter, randomized, crossover comparative study. All patients administered once-daily subcutaneous injections of GA 20 mg/1.0 mL (marketed formulation) or GA 20 mg/0.5 mL (reduced volume formulation) for 14 days. Patients were crossed-over to the alternate treatment for an additional 14 days. Using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), patients recorded in daily diaries the severity of injection pain immediately and 5 min post-injection, and the presence and severity of LISRs (swelling, redness, itching, lump) within 5 min and 24 h post-injection. VAS pain scores were ranked significantly lower immediately and 5 min after GA 20 mg/0.5 mL injections (p < 0.0001). Although LISRs were rare for both preparations, the severity of reactions ranked significantly lower and fewer symptoms occurred within 5 min and 24 h of using the reduced volume formulation (p < 0.0001). GA injected subcutaneously in a reduced volume formulation is a more tolerable option.

Abstract
Leptin is produced primarily by adipocytes. Although originally associated with the central regulation of satiety and energy metabolism, increasing evidence indicates that leptin may be an important mediator in cardiovascular pathophysiology. The aim of the present study was to investigate plasma leptin levels in patient with Chagas' heart disease and their relation to different forms of the disease. We studied 52 chagasic patients and 30 controls matched for age and body mass index. All subjects underwent anthropometric, leptin and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) measurements and were evaluated by echocardiography, 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), and chest X-ray. All patients had fasting blood samples taken between 8:00 and 9:00 am. Chagasic patients were divided into 3 groups: group I (indeterminate form, IF group) consisted of 24 subjects with 2 positive serologic reactions for Chagas' disease and no cardiac involvement as evaluated by chest X-rays, ECG and two-dimensional echocardiography; group II (showing ECG abnormalities and normal left ventricular systolic function, ECG group) consisted of 14 patients; group III consisted of 14 patients with congestive heart failure (CHF group) and left ventricular dysfunction. Serum leptin levels were significantly lower (P < 0.001) in the CHF group (1.4 +/- 0.8 ng/mL) when compared to the IF group (5.3 +/- 5.3 ng/mL), ECG group (9.7 +/- 10.7 ng/mL), and control group (8.1 +/- 7.8 ng/mL). NT-proBNP levels were significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the CHF group (831.8 +/- 800.1 pg/mL) when compared to the IF group (53.2 +/- 33.3 pg/mL), ECG group (83.3 +/- 57.4 pg/mL), and control group (32 +/- 22.7 pg/mL). Patients with Chagas' disease and an advanced stage of CHF have high levels of NT-ProBNP andlow plasma levels of leptin. One or more leptin-suppressing mechanisms may operate in chagasic patients.

Abstract
Microbial sulphate reduction was stimulated successfully in enclosures installed in a constructed wetland. When sucrose (2.4mM) and NH(4)Cl (600 microM) were added to water in the test enclosures, the indigenous microbial community was able to remove over 90% of the sulphate, present as a contaminant from nearby mining activity at a concentration of 384 mg x l(-1) (4mM), over 50 days. Over 90% of the sucrose was also removed. Sulphate was not reduced in control enclosures containing no added sucrose or NH(4)Cl. Fermentation of sucrose by obligate anaerobes including Clostridium sp. and Bacteriodes sp. preceded sulphate reduction in the test enclosures. Sulphate reduction was biphasic, with maximum rates noted between 2-5 and 23-27 days after the addition of the growth substrates. Relatively unbiased 16S rDNA analysis suggested that nitrogen-fixing bacteria were important constituents of the microbial community in the test enclosures at day 23, suggesting that soluble nitrogen was limiting in the amended test enclosures during the experiment.

Abstract
The exact cause of the formation of sialoliths is unknown. Detailed knowledge of pathogenesis of sialolithiasis and composition of sialoliths is necessary to define new therapeutic procedures. The crystalline components of 23 sialoliths of human submandibular gland were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction analysis. All of the sialoliths localized in the ducts in the submandibular gland consisted of hydroxylapatite. However, in the sialoliths in the Wharton's duct, hydroxylapatite as well as whitlockite and brushite could be found in all except one case. Whitlockite was observed more often in the nucleus of the sialoliths and it was a common co-phase along with hydroxylapatite. The nucleus in one sialolith consisted of brushite and the cortex showed a co-phase of hydroxylapatite and brushite. The occurrence of whitlockite in the sialoliths in Wharton's duct may be due to a higher concentration of calcium and phosphate in saliva in this duct.

Child health and obstetrics-gynaecology in a problem-based learning curriculum: accepting the limits of integration and the need for differentiation. MEDICAL EDUCATION 2002; 36:261-271. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The University of Manchester's undergraduate curriculum was reorganised in 1994. Problem-based learning (PBL) was chosen as the central educational method throughout the 5 years. A thematic interdisciplinary style provided a framework around which to select and integrate content. The theme for family, reproductive and child health for the 14-week Families and Children Module (FCM) in year 4 integrated content from obstetrics-gynaecology, paediatrics (including child psychiatry), genetics and public health. This paper focuses on the FCM which has put to test some of the principles of integration. METHODS The educational process and outcome of the FCM was evaluated with information from (1) Open Forum feedback sessions (2) student questionnaires and (3) students' performance in an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). RESULTS Significant problems were encountered during the first year of the FCM (1997--98). An Open Forum for all students and staff was convened after each module in order to address the level of concern. Students' responses to questionnaires reflected the overall impression obtained from the Open Forum. Difficulties appeared to be more than the anxieties and challenges inherent in organisational change and were not simple practical timetabling problems. Tutors perceived a loss of coherence and student contact; students reported difficulties maintaining sufficient continuity of focus in clinical and academic learning experiences. The intended level of integration of paediatrics and obstetrics-gynaecology was unmanageable. Consequently, the FCM (1998-99) was divided into separate attachments for clinical learning and experience in paediatrics and obstetrics-gynaecology, each of 7 weeks' duration. Further open feedback sessions revealed that the modifications implemented in 1998-99 were associated with positive experiences for students and tutors. Comparison of responses to the evaluation questionnaires showed that students' overall rating of the module was higher (P=0.002) for 1998-99 (mean 3.4, SD 0.9) than for 1997-98 (mean 3.0, SD 1.1). CONCLUSIONS We emphasise that horizontal integration can result in an experience of disintegration for students and tutors. Certain disciplines, such as paediatrics and obstetrics-gynaecology, may not have enough in common for full curriculum integration.

Abstract
Conservative estimates of sexual assault prevalence suggest that 25 percent of American women have experienced sexual assault, including rape. Approximately one-half of those cases involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, victim, or both. Alcohol contributes to sexual assault through multiple pathways, often exacerbating existing risk factors. Beliefs about alcohol's effects on sexual and aggressive behavior, stereotypes about drinking women, and alcohol's effects on cognitive and motor skills contribute to alcohol-involved sexual assault. Despite advances in researchers' understanding of the relationships between alcohol consumption and sexual assault, many questions still need to be addressed in future studies.

Abstract
This project has been concerned with the comparison of children born as a result of fresh embryo transfer (IVF) with children conceived and born via the natural process. The former included children who were the single outcome of the birth (singletons) and children who were the result of a multiple birth (e.g. twins, triplets). A computer database was established into which was put 23 items of data on each child, making a total of 12,788 items overall. There were 278 "normally conceived" children (controls), 150 IVF Singletons, and 128 children from multiple births. The results show interesting differences in the gestational age at birth, the birth weight, the mode of delivery and the degrees of birth abnormalities and malformations.

Abstract
In order to minimize the effects of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) on stillbirth, mummification, and neonatal mortality in swine herds, many producers have vaccinated their herds using a modified-live virus vaccine. The purpose of this study was to determine the association of the PRRS modified-live vaccine and reproductive performance by stage of gestation when the vaccine was administered. A total of 47 swine herds from Ontario and Manitoba, Canada, and from the mid-western USA were included in the study. Participating farms had vaccinated all of their sows at one point in time when they used the vaccine for the first time. The reproductive performance of sows that farrowed in the year prior to use of the vaccine was compared to that of sows vaccinated in each of five stages of gestation and in the gestation that followed the initial use of the vaccine. Sows vaccinated at any time during gestation had a reduced number of pigs born alive, a reduced number of pigs weaned per litter, and increased number of stillborn pigs and an increased number of mummified pigs compared to the sows that farrowed prior to use of the vaccine. The largest association was seen in sows that were vaccinated in the last four weeks of gestation. The largest losses were observed in those herds that were vaccinated concurrently with the initial PRRS herd outbreak. These results suggest that the modified-live vaccine should only be administered to non-gestating sows.

Abstract
AIMS To compare the outcome in in vitro fertilisation (IVF) children (after fresh embryo transfer) from multiple and singleton births with one another, and with normally conceived control children. METHODS A cohort of 278 children (150 singletons, 100 twins, 24 triplets and four quadruplets), conceived by IVF after three fresh embryos had been transferred, born between October 1984 and December 1991, and 278 normally conceived control children (all singletons), were followed up for four years after birth. They were assessed for neonatal conditions, minor congenital anomalies, major congenital malformations, cerebral palsy and other disabilities. Control children, all born at term, were matched for age, sex and social class. RESULTS The ratio of male:female births was 1.03. Forty six per cent of IVF children were from multiple births; 34.9% were from preterm deliveries; and 43.2% weighed less than 2500 g at birth. The IVF singletons were on average born one week earlier than the controls, weighed 400 g less, and had a threefold greater chance of being born by caesarean section. The higher percentage of preterm deliveries was largely due to multiple births and they contributed to neonatal conditions in 45.0% of all IVF children. The types of congenital abnormalities varied: 3.6% of IVF children and 2.5% of controls had minor congenital anomalies, and 2.5% of IVF children and none of the controls had major congenital malformations. The numbers of each specific type of congenital abnormality were small and were not significantly related to multiple births. IVF children (2.1%) and 0.4% of the controls had mild/moderate disabilities. They were all from multiple births, including two children with cerebral palsy who were triplets. CONCLUSIONS The outcome of IVF treatment leading to multiple births is less satisfactory than that in singletons because of neonatal conditions associated with preterm delivery and disabilities in later childhood. A reduction of multiple pregnancies by limiting the transfer of embryos to two instead of three remains a high priority.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to investigate the distribution of vitamin E in the macular and peripheral regions of the human retina, retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and choroid as a function of age. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to measure alpha- and gamma-tocopherol levels quantitatively using tocol as an internal standard. In 57 out of 70 donor eyes (ages 9-104) the macular region was isolated and the tocopherols analyzed. The conventional brush method and a new vortex method were used to isolate the retinal pigment epithelium cells. Similar trends for the vitamin E levels (increase to the 5th decade, decrease after 7th decade) were found for the macular and peripheral retina and for the macular RPE. In the peripheral RPE a slight continuous increase with age was found. The vitamin E levels are higher in the RPE than in the retina, for both macular and peripheral regions. The amounts of vitamin E/mg protein are lower in the macular retina than in the peripheral retina, whereas in the RPE there is no difference in vitamin E content between macular and peripheral regions. A simple method based on a gentle vortex step was found to offer several advantages over the more generally used isolation of RPE cells based on brushing, and there was no difference in recovery of vitamin E in RPE cells when they were isolated by either isolation technique. It was also found that denominators, used to express the values of vitamin E in tissues should, be used with care since age dependent trends in parameters/denominators could be caused by trends in the denominators only.

A double-blind cross-over controlled study to evaluate the effect of human biosynthetic growth hormone on ovarian stimulation in previous poor responders to in-vitro fertilization. Abstract
The effect of exogenous human biosynthetic growth hormone (HGH; 12 IU/day; Norditropin, Novo-Nordisk) on the response to ovarian stimulation using a buserelin/human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG) regimen was assessed in women who had previously shown a 'poor response' in spite of increasing doses of HMG. Forty patients were recruited into a prospective double-blind placebo-controlled study. The serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) on day 2-5 of a menstrual cycle (< 10 IU/l) was used to exclude any peri-menopausal candidates. The urinary 24 h GH secretion was normal in all patients. Thirty-three patients completed the study with 21 patients having human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) in both arms, thus providing a complete set of placebo control data. Of these 21 patients, the administration of HGH compared to the placebo cycle resulted in increased serum concentrations of fasting insulin on the 8th (median 3.9 versus 5.8 mU/l; P < 0.0005) and 13th (median 4.4 versus 5.8 mU/l; P < 0.05) day of HMG in those cycles receiving HGH. After 8 days of co-treatment with HGH the number of cohort follicles (14-16.9 mm) was significantly increased, but this change was not sustained on the day of HCG administration. No statistical difference in the serum oestradiol on the 8th day of HMG or day of HCG, length of the follicular phase, total dose of HMG used, or the number of oocytes collected was seen between the placebo or HGH cycles. This study demonstrates that HGH does not improve the ovarian response to ovulation induction in previous poor responders.

Abstract
The fatty acids in the human retina and the macular region were measured quantitatively (mole percent) by gas chromatography. The major fatty acids of the human retina and macula were palmitic, stearic, oleic, arachidonic, and docosahexaenoic. Surprisingly, there was much less docosahexaenoic acid in the macular region (15.9% of total) than in the peripheral retina (22.3% of total). There was a group of "other fatty acids," not any of the five major fatty acids, that were relatively more abundant in the macula (21.0% of total) than in the peripheral retina (10.7% of total). These results indicate that the human macula has a unique biochemical composition, which differs substantially from the peripheral retina. Establishment of the biochemical composition of the macula may be important for helping recognize possible changes associated with diseases such as age-related macular degeneration.

Abstract
A total of 28 women scheduled for in-vitro fertilization used buserelin and human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG) for ovarian stimulation. One group (I) of 17 women was given human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG 10,000 IU) to trigger ovulation, but the resulting embryos were electively cryopreserved because of the risk (serum oestradiol greater than or equal to 3500 pg/ml) of developing the ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Six women continued the buserelin therapy in the luteal phase and eleven did not. In group II (n = 11), the HMG injections were discontinued because of an exaggerated ovarian response and the HCG was omitted. Six of these women continued the buserelin injections until the onset of menses and five did not. In both groups, the ovarian response to induction of ovulation (serum oestradiol concentrations and number of follicles) was similar for those who did or did not continue buserelin therapy. There was no difference in the rate of ovarian quiescence (weekly fall in serum oestradiol concentration following the stimulation) between those women who did or did not continue the buserelin therapy in either group. The serum luteinizing hormone concentrations remained low in all women in both groups. We conclude that the omission of buserelin therapy after discontinuing the HMG in women at risk of developing OHSS does not affect subsequent ovarian quiescence.

Abstract
From 1st June 1989 to 31st May 1991, 78 women with a serum oestradiol level greater than 3500 pg/ml on the day of the ovulatory trigger, following pituitary suppression with buserelin and ovarian stimulation with human menopausal gonadotrophins (HMG), had all their embryos electively cryopreserved at the pronucleate stage to minimize the risk of developing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHS). Treatment with buserelin was continued in the luteal phase. A median of 19 oocytes (range 7-43) was obtained and 12 embryos (range 1-37) frozen per cycle. Twenty-one (27%) women developed OHS (six severe). Women developing OHS had higher (P less than 0.05) serum oestradiol concentrations on the 7th day after oocyte retrieval, compared to those who did not. No differences were found for any of the following criteria: aetiology of infertility, age, total dose of HMG, number of oocytes, fertilization rate or freeze-thaw survival of embryos. Subsequently, 125 frozen-thawed embryo replacements have been undertaken, using buserelin and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) (n = 93) or natural cycles (n = 32). The overall freeze-thaw survival and implantation rates per embryo were 71.8 and 11.7%, respectively. The pregnancy rates in natural cycles (19%) and buserelin/HRT cycles (29%) were not significantly different.

Clinical and endocrinological changes in women following ovulation induction using buserelin acetate/human menopausal gonadotrophin augmented with biosynthetic human growth hormone. Abstract
Biosynthetic human growth hormone added to an ovarian stimulation regime of human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG) for IVF treatment improves the response of women who were previously resistant. This study investigated the efficacy of growth hormone (GH)/buserelin/HMG treatment in women with a previous normal response to buserelin/HMG stimulation. Ten patients (28-36 years, mean 32.5 years) were treated with GH (6 IU/day) plus buserelin/HMG. A control group of 10 women (28-37 years mean 31.0 years) received buserelin/HMG alone. All were given buserelin 500 micrograms and 2 ampoules (150 IU) HMG daily once pituitary suppression had been confirmed. There was no improvement in the GH group as assessed by follicular growth rate or number, oocyte number per woman and pregnancy rate. There was no effect of GH upon the serum oestradiol level and the follicular fluid levels of oestradiol, GH and inhibin. Serum IGF-1 increased significantly during GH administration, returning to pre-treatment levels 2 days after the last dose of GH. Follicular IGF-1 was much higher in the GH-treated group than the controls. Significant correlations were found in the GH-treated group between follicular fluid GH and follicular fluid oestradiol concentrations and between follicular GH and follicular size. Follicular IGF-1 was correlated with the serum IGF-1 concentration on day 8 of the GH/HMG treatment. In conclusion GH/buserelin/HMG treatment in women with a previous normal response to buserelin/HMG stimulation increased their serum and follicular IGF-1 concentrations. However, it does not improve the clinical ovarian response or the follicular secretion of oestradiol or inhibin.

Abstract
Secretory differentiation of endometrium after multiple follicular stimulation using gonadotrophin releasing hormone and human menopausal gonadotrophin has been studied both histologically and immunohistochemically in 30 women undergoing in-vitro fertilization treatment. None had embryo transfer. Patients were randomly allocated to receive luteal phase support with a single dose of human chorionic gonadotrophin. The latter failed to produce any significant enhancement of endometrial structure or secretions. Appropriate glandular morphology was present in a greater proportion of those who were successfully stimulated than those who responded poorly. However, defective secretion of the cycle-dependent component studied, using monoclonal antibody D9B1, was demonstrated in two-thirds of cases regardless of the ovarian response. Early vascular maturation in the stroma was a common finding, and was thus considered as a feature of structural modulation of these endometria.

Abstract
The rhodopsin content of the human retina was determined spectrophotometrically. Retinas were removed completely by using an in vitro technique based on a simulation of retinal detachment. This method provides a total recovery of rod outer segments which contain the rhodopsin visual pigment or its apoprotein, opsin. Using this improved dissection method followed by a crude preparation of the retina, an opsin-rhodopsin content of 6.20 +/- 0.64 nmol/retina (n = 9) was found. This is larger than values previously reported. Regeneration with a threefold excess of 11-cis-retinal improved the recovery of rhodopsin dramatically because the corneas of these human donor eyes were removed for corneal transplant surgery under relatively bright light that bleaches the retina nearly completely. The amount of rhodopsin that can be isolated will be sufficient for studies on early events in visual transduction using laser photolysis.

Abstract
The present retrospective study was undertaken to determine whether Trail Making Test A and B, Digit Span Forward and Backward, and TPT Memory and Location scores are differentially sensitive to right or left hemisphere brain damage. Groups of patients with right, left, and generalized cerebral lesions and matched normal controls were compared. Results showed a relative failure for any individual measure, difference, or ratio score to reliably distinguish between right and left hemisphere lesions. Patients with diffuse lesions performed significantly worse than non-neurologic medical controls and right and left lesion groups on Trails A and TPT Memory and Location. Results are discussed in terms of specific methodological variables including chronicity of lesion, the nature of the task demands, and priming effects.

Abstract
The present study has demonstrated the usefulness of GH in augmenting buserelin acetate/hMG to stimulate the rate of growth of follicles in women regarded as poor responders. The PR achieved was extremely encouraging in a group of patients whose prognosis was otherwise poor. Further studies are required to confirm these preliminary data.

Abstract
Gamete intra-Fallopian transfer (GIFT) was performed in 130 treatment cycles over a 17-month period. In 91% (118/130) of the cycles one or more oocytes were available for insemination in vitro and only GIFT cycles with supernumerary oocytes were included in the present study. Pituitary and ovarian suppression was achieved with buserelin followed by stimulation of multifollicular development by human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG). Failure of supernumerary oocytes to fertilize was associated with a significantly reduced pregnancy rate (3/23; 13%) compared to cycles where fertilization occurred in vitro (35/95; 37%). These findings demonstrate that the outcome of IVF of supernumerary oocytes may be of particular diagnostic value in couples where the female partner has not conceived following treatment by GIFT after pituitary down-regulation with buserelin and ovarian stimulation with HMG.

Abstract
The role of proactive interference in verbal memory was examined in 154 normal and brain-damaged subjects. Subjects were matched on age, sex, education, presence or absence of brain damage, and administered the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) Stories in standard order (A+B) or reverse order (B+A). Both normal and brain-damaged subjects recalled fewer details from Story B than Story A regardless of order of administration. We conclude that Story B from the WMS is inherently a more difficult passage to recall than Story A. The recall of fewer Story B items relative to Story A is expected and not due to proactive interference.
