Abstract
Many regions of the Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) genome, repeated and unique sequences, contribute to the geographical variation observed between strains. Here we use a large alignment of curated EBV genome sequences to identify major sites of variation in the genome of type 1 EBV strains; the CAO deletion in latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) is the most frequent major indel present in the unique regions of EBV strains from various parts of the world. Principal component analysis was used to identify patterns of sequence variation and nucleotide positions in the sequences that can distinguish EBV from some different geographical regions. Viral genome sequence variation also affects interpretation of genetic content; known genes, origins of replication and gene expression control regions explain most of the viral genome but there are still a few sections of unknown function. One of these EBV genome regions contains a large inverted repeat sequence (invR) within the IR-1 major internal repeat array. We deleted this invR sequence and showed that this abolished the ability of the virus to transform human B cells into lymphoblastoid cell lines. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Silent cancer agents: multi-disciplinary modelling of human DNA oncoviruses’.

Abstract
Abstract
Objective
The aim of this archival study was to utilize quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) recordings to explore the effects of Bilateral Alternating Stimulation Tactile (BLAST) technology on Hispanic individuals following the recollection of a stressful event. It was hypothesized that significant changes in the participants’ qEEG recordings would occur following the BLAST condition and that would, in turn, represent decreases in anxiety.
Participants and Method
The clinical sample consisted of 6 Hispanic individuals: 3 identified as Nicaraguan, and 3 identified as Hispanic/Biracial. Ages of the participants ranged from 6 years to 51 years, and they had various diagnoses such as ADHD, Specific Learning Disability, and Anxiety. 19-channel 5-minute qEEG recordings were collected utilizing a NeuroField Q20 amplifier and was stored using NeuroGuide at three different time points: a baseline measure when thinking of the stressful event, during the delivery of BLAST, and after removing the devices. Paired t-test analyses were conducted before and after BLAST with NeuroGuide’s Neurostat software.
Results
EEG recordings comparing the stress condition to the BLAST condition exhibited reduced activity in right frontal Theta at 4-8 Hz in the frontal channel locations (FP2, F4, and C4). Significant reductions were also found in Beta 1 at 12-14 Hz in the frontal channel locations (F3, FP2, and F7), reductions in Gamma at 40-50 Hz at C4, reductions in Delta (1-4 Hz) and Theta (4-8 Hz) at C4. Additionally, increases in high Beta (25-30 Hz) and Beta 2 were found at C4.
Conclusions
The results indicate that BLAST technology may be an appropriate intervention for Hispanic individuals to reduce cortex activity associated with anxiety and stress. Generalizability is difficult due to the study’s small sample size. Thus, a larger sample size should be recruited and tested to determine the sustainability of the effects in a more inclusive population.

Abstract
Abstract
Objective
The aim of this empirical study was to examine the accessibility of pediatric neuropsychological evaluations in the state of Arizona for non-English speaking children. To date, there is very limited research that analyzes the accessibility of neuropsychological evaluations. Diversity variables, such as primary language, can negatively impact assessment scores (Norbury & Sparks, 2013), leaving diverse individuals at risk of misdiagnosis when an assessment is not conducted in one’s primary language, nor normed on similar individuals (Mindt et al., 2008). The Center for Immigration Studies (2017) found 28% of school-age children in Arizona speak a foreign language, warranting a need for culturally-appropriate evaluations.
Method
Arizona pediatric neuropsychologists in non-hospital settings were identified via electronic resources: AzNS, AAPdN, AzPA, CSN, and AACN provider lists; LinkedIn; Google search. Participants met criteria for inclusion if “pediatric neuropsychological” evaluations were provided by a neuropsychologist on staff. “Pediatrics” is defined as 0-17. Neuropsychologists were contacted directly via phone for survey participation; verbal informed consent was obtained.
Results
Seventeen pediatric neuropsychologists were found in the state of Arizona, and 52.9% consented to participate in the survey (n = 9). All participants (100%, n = 9) stated they provide evaluations in English only, and refer-out for non-English evaluations.
Conclusions
There is a severe disparity in the access to care with respect to availability of culturally-appropriate evaluations in Arizona: a state with a large population of non-English speakers. The current study adds to the limited literature in this area, and sets the stage for continued professional advocacy efforts. Goals for future national research is critically discussed.

Central infusions of the recombinant human prolactin receptor antagonist, S179D-PRL, delay the onset of maternal behavior in steroid-primed, nulliparous female rats. Endocrinology 2001; 142:730-9. Abstract
The expression of maternal behavior in the newly parturient rat is under endocrine regulation. Blocking endogenous PRL secretion with bromocriptine delays the normal rapid expression of maternal care shown toward foster young in steroid-primed virgin female rats. The recent development of the PRL receptor antagonist S179D-PRL, a mutant of human PRL in which the serine residue at the 179 position is replaced with aspartate, provides a potentially useful tool to examine the role of PRL in neural processing. In the present report, three experiments were conducted that examined the effects of this PRL antagonist on the induction of maternal behavior. In each experiment, ovariectomized, nulliparous rats were treated sequentially with SILASTIC capsules implanted sc with progesterone (days 1-11) and estradiol (days 11-17), a treatment that stimulates a rapid onset of maternal behavior in virgin rats. On day 11, females were implanted with Alzet miniosmotic pumps connected to cannulae directed unilaterally at the lateral ventricle (Exp 1) or bilaterally at the medial preoptic area (MPOA; Exp 2 and 3). Pumps contained either doses of S179D-PRL (0.115 or 1.15 mg/ml; Exp 1 and 2), wild-type human PRL (1.15 mg/ml; Exp 3), or the saline vehicle (Exp 1-3). Testing for maternal behavior began on day 12, a day after pump insertion, and animals were tested daily for 6 days. Latencies to contact, retrieve, and group foster test young were recorded. Administration of both the high and low doses of S179D-PRL infused into the lateral ventricle (Exp 1) or MPOA (Exp 2) significantly delayed the onset of maternal behavior. In contrast, MPOA infusions of the control hormone, wild-type human PRL, in Exp 3 did not delay the onset of maternal behavior. These findings support the concept that the effects of S179D-PRL are caused by its actions as a PRL receptor antagonist rather than by a nonspecific effect of the protein. Overall, these results demonstrate the effectiveness of S179D-PRL acting at the level of the central nervous system (and, more specifically, within the MPOA) to regulate maternal behavior, a PRL-mediated response.

Abstract
Inadequate levels of all-trans-retinol in the blood cause retinal dysfunction; hence, genes implicated in retinal vitamin-A metabolism represent candidates for inherited retinal degenerations. In the current study, molecular genetic analysis of a consanguineous pedigree segregating for non-syndromic autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (arRP) indicated that the affected siblings were homozygous by descent for a G4763A nucleotide substitution in RLBP1, the gene encoding cellular retinaldehyde-binding protein (CRALBP). This substitution is predicted to replace an arginine with glutamine at residue 150. CRALBP is not expressed in photoreceptors but is abundant in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and Müller cells of the neuroretina, where it carries 11-cis-retinol and 11-cis-retinaldehyde. When expressed in bacteria, recombinant CRALBP (rCRALBP) containing the R150Q substitution was less soluble than wild-type rCRALBP. Mutant rCRALBP was purified from the soluble cell lysate and the protein structure was verified by mass spectrometry. The mutant protein lacked the ability to bind 11-cis-retinaldehyde. These findings suggest that arRP in the current pedigree results from a lack of functional CRALBP, presumably leading to disruption of retinal vitamin-A metabolism.

Abstract
Nongranulomatous ulcerative jejunoileitis (NGUJI) is a rare, often fatal disorder that produces multiple nonmalignant small bowel ulcerations. A 55-year-old woman with presumed celiac disease presented with steroid-refractory diarrhea, weight loss and abdominal pain. A laparotomy was performed to exclude the possibility of a lymphomatous disorder, and multiple nonmalignant small bowel ulcerations were discovered. Despite a combination of treatment with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and prednisone 30 mg/day she continued to deteriorate. The addition of azathioprine to her treatment regimen resulted in marked clinical and biochemical improvement. Her enteroscopy normalized, and she was able to discontinue TPN and reduce her steroid requirements. Although azathioprine has been used occasionally to treat refractory sprue, there have been no reports of its use in NGUJI. In this case, azathioprine played a key role in the management of NGUJI and should be considered a treatment option for patients with this disorder.

Abstract
Blepharophimosis syndrome (BPES) is an autosomal dominant disorder involving abnormal eyelid development. Cytogenetic and linkage analyses have previously implicated the chromosome 3q23 region in multiple cases of this syndrome. However, in a few cases cytogenetic analyses have implicated other chromosomal regions in this condition. Here we report linkage of BPES in a large Indian pedigree to chromosome 7p13-p21; affected only two-point and multipoint analyses using D7S488, D7S2551 and D7S2562 both showed peak lod scores of 3.61 coincident with D7S2562. Recombinations in affected individuals placed the critical region between D7S488 and D7S629. When both affected and unaffected individuals were considered, a maximum two-point lod score of 3.38 at theta = 0.08 was obtained with D7S2551 while a peak multipoint lod score of 3.64 was obtained between D7S488 and D7S2551. Segregation analysis revealed two unaffected individuals carrying the affected haplotype accounted for the difference in peak, relative to the affected only analysis. The chromosome 7p candidate genes inhibin beta A and epidermal growth factor receptor map outside this region whereas the HOX1 gene cluster may map inside this region. Although BPES is sometimes associated with female infertility due to premature ovarian failure, in the current family affected females were fertile. The current finding together with the previous evidence implicating chromosome 3q2 provides strong evidence that BPES involves locus heterogeneity; this point should be considered when counselling affected families.

Abstract
Arkansas Regressor and Progressor chickens were re-evaluated for their immune response to different antigens. Chickens received i.v. injection of either SRBC (10 birds per line) or Salmonella pullorum (SP; 10 birds per line) at 7 wk of age, and sera were collected at 6, 13, and 20 d postimmunization. A third group of birds (10 birds per line) received and i.m. injection of GAT emulsion at 7 and 12 wk of age, and sera were collected at 10 and 14 wk of age. There were significant differences between the two lines in their humoral immunity to SRBC, SP, and GAT. Such results suggest genetic control of humoral immunity to these antigens in these lines. It is unknown whether humoral immunity to these antigens is correlated to regression of tumors induced by Rous sarcoma virus.

Abstract
Antithymocyte globulin (ATG) is an established form of therapy for severe aplastic anemia (SAA). However, in patients who do not respond to this treatment and who are not candidates for bone marrow transplantation few successful therapeutic alternatives exist. We report two such patients who have shown a therapeutic response to Cyclosporin A (CSA) (Sandimmune, Sandoz). Case 1, a 15 year old male, and Case 2, a 34 year old female, were diagnosed as having SAA in September 1984 and May 1984 respectively. Treatment with high dose Methylprednisolone (MPN) and ATG in Case 1 and MPN, ATG and Oxymetholone in Case 2 for ten days was ineffective in both cases. Case 1 developed anaphylaxis with both repeat ATG and ALG (antilymphoblast globulin), and Case 2 failed to respond to repeat ATG. Both required frequent packed cells and platelet transfusions. At five and six months respectively following completion of ATG therapy, CSA was started at 10 mg/kg/day in divided doses orally. Renal and liver functions and CSA blood levels were followed. Within six weeks both patients exhibited a hematologic response and were no longer transfusion dependent. On maintenance therapy of 4 mg/kg/day (Case 1) and four months after discontinuing CSA (Case 2) the hematologic values are as follows: hemoglobin 160 and 130 g/L, absolute granulocyte count 3100 and 1640 X 10(9)/L, and platelets 132 and 84 X 10(9)/L respectively. Side effects included hypertrichosis, gingival hyperplasia and mild reversible nephrotoxicity. CSA appears to represent an effective form of therapy for patients with SAA refractory to ATG.

Abstract
Endoscopic sclerotherapy has been suggested as the therapy of choice for acute hemorrhage from esophageal varices. It not only controls such episodes, but also prevents rebleeding, and prolongs life. After treatment, patients may present with endoscopic and radiographic findings which mimic esophageal carcinoma including ulceration, non-pliable walls, irregular mucosal pattern and overhanging edges.

Abstract
Although the incidence of femoral graft infection is low, the morbidity and mortality of this complication is significant. The routine interposition of the muscle between the skin incision and anastomosis has not been widely practiced. Our early experience with over 50 patients suggests that the lateral approach to femoral vessels provides excellent exposure of the common and profunda femoris arteries and improves soft tissue coverage of a vulnerable anastomosis.

Abstract
The effect of ovine prolactin administration on the fetal rabbit pulmonary pressure volume relationship was determined. Using pentobarbital anesthesia, on Day 24 of gestation, a midline incision on the maternal abdomen was made to expose the bicornuate uterus. Fetal rabbits in one horn of the uterus were injected intramuscularly with a dose of 1.0 mg (0.05 ml) of prolactin solution. Similarly, fetuses in the opposite horn were administered an equivalent volume of control vehicle. On Day 26 of gestation, no significant enhancement of lung maturation, as judged from the pressure volume relationship, was found to result from prolactin administration. These results suggest that prolactin does not initiate the secretion of surface active material into the alveolar lumen of the fetal lung in sufficient amounts to induce physiologic maturation of the rabbit fetal lung.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine the source and quality of the nutrition education received and to determine the nutritional knowledge gained by dental students. The assessment of the dental education program revealed a limited nutrition component uidely scattered among a number of departments and offered diversely in each of the four years. Faculty interviews and a review of course outlines indicated that some material was presented on foods; disorders; diets; nutrition, biochemistry, and physiology; and anatomical terms. A "self-instructional unit" contained seven tapes on aspects of nutrition. National Dental Board Examinations contained nutrition-related questions which would be helpful in developing a nutrition program, including the development of a dental-related nutritional knowledge test. Such a test, developed within the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, was administered to the dental students on an honor-code basis early in the fall semester. Tests were completed by 178 students. The mean per cent score, 58.7 +/- 10.2, was below the mean for undergraduate students who had completed a basic course in nutrition with a grade of "C". Evidence is presented indicating that the general nutritional knowledge of the dental students increased only during the first year of their program. A gain in nutritional knowledge was noted in the categories of: Nutrition, biochemistry, and physiology; disorders, diets, and organisms.

Abstract
Cell-free preparations of lactating mammary gland of rats maintained during lactation on a fat-free diet incorporated C(14)-acetate into fatty acids to a greater degree than preparations made from rats fed a similar diet containing 20% fat. The type of fat used did not affect the degree of inhibition of synthesis. C(14)-acetate was incorporated mainly into dodecanoic and tetradecanoic acids although labeling was observed in fatty acids from 8-18 carbons. The pattern of labeling was not significantly different in the various groups except for slightly decreased amounts of C(14) in the shorter chain fatty acids of preparations made from glands of rats on the fat-free or coconut oilcontaining diet. The fatty acids characteristic of the fed fat became prominent components of the microsomes and mitochondria as well as of the fat floating on the centrifuged homogenates (presumably milk fat).
