Seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against pertussis toxin in the Chinese population: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Pertussis is a vaccine-preventable infectious disease; however, data on pertussis antibody levels in a nationwide population are still limited in China. We aimed to pool the seropositivity rates of IgG antibodies against pertussis toxin (PT-IgG) across the country. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database for studies published between January 1, 2010, and June 30, 2023. Studies reporting the seroprevalence of PT-IgG among a healthy Chinese population were included. Pooled estimates were obtained using random-effects meta-analyzes. The meta-analysis included 39 studies (47,778 participants) reporting anti-PT IgG seropositivity rates. The pooled rate for all ages was 7.06% (95% CI, 5.50%-9.07%). Subgroup analyzes showed rates ranging from 6.36% to 12.50% across different age groups. This meta-analysis indicated a low anti-PT IgG seropositivity rate in the Chinese population, particularly among school-aged children and young adults. This finding underscores the urgent need to refine immunization strategies.

Enhanced catalytic activity of Fe3O4-carbon dots complex in the Fenton reaction for enhanced immunotherapeutic and oxygenation effects

Tumor metastasis and recurrence are closely related to immune escape and hypoxia. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and photothermal therapy (PTT) can induce immunogenic cell death (ICD), and their combination with immune checkpoint agents is a promising therapeutic strategy. Iron based nanomaterials have received more and more attention, but their low Fenton reaction efficiency has hindered their clinical application. In this study, Fe3O4-carbon dots complex (Fe3O4-CDs) was synthesized, which was modified with ferrocenedicarboxylic acid by amide bond, and crosslinked into Fe3O4-CDs@Fc nano complex. The CDs catalyzed the Fenton reaction activity of Fe3O4 by helping to improve the electron transfer efficiency, extended the reaction pH condition to 7.4. The Fe3O4-CDs@Fc exhibit exceptional optical activity, achieving a thermal conversion efficiency of 56.43 % under 808 nm light and a photosensitive single-line state oxygen quantum yield of 33 % under 660 nm light. Fe3O4-CDs@Fc improved intracellular oxygen level and inhibited hypoxia-inducing factor (HIF-1α) by in-situ oxygen production based on Fenton reaction. The multimodal combination of Fe3O4-CDs@Fc (CDT/PDT/PTT) strongly induced immune cell death (ICD). The expression of immune-related protein and HIF-1α was investigated by immunofluorescence method. In vivo, Fe3O4-CDs@Fc combined with immune checkpoint blocker (antibody PD-L1, αPD-L1) effectively ablated primary tumors and inhibited distal tumor growth. Fe3O4-CDs@Fc is a promising immune-antitumor drug.

Growing success with sustainability: The influence of green HRM, innovation, and competitive advantage on environmental performance in the manufacturing industry

President Xi set a long-term mitigation target of carbon neutrality by 2060 in September 2020 to cut carbon emissions and improve environmental performance. As a result, the current study aims to investigate how green human resource management and green innovation affect environmental performance in pursuit of the ultimate objective of carbon neutrality. Furthermore, the research considers the potential mediating effect of a green competitive advantage to clarify the mechanisms by which GHRM and green innovation impact environmental performance. Data from 278 employees in the manufacturing industry of Heilongjiang Province were collected through a questionnaire, for which we used a quantitative random sampling technique. The study employed the Smart PLS-4 structural equation modeling technique and revealed that all three factors significantly influenced environmental performance: green HRM, innovation, and competitive advantage. Resource-based view (RBV) theory served as the theoretical foundation for the study. The study uniquely contributes to the literature on GHRM, green innovation, competitive advantage, and environmental performance.

The apple MdGA2ox7 modulates the balance between growth and stress tolerance in an anthocyanin-dependent manner

Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) is a widely cultivated fruit crop worldwide but often suffers from abiotic stresses such as salt and cold. Gibberellic acid (GA) plays a pivotal in controlling plant development, environmental adaptability, and secondary metabolism. The GA2-oxidase (GA2ox) is responsible for the deactivation of bioactive GA. In this study, seventeen GA2-oxidase genes were identified in the apple genome, and these members could be clustered into four clades based on phylogenetic relationships and conserved domain structures. MdGA2ox7 exhibited robust expression across various tissues, responded to cold and salt treatments, and was triggered in apple fruit peels via light-induced anthocyanin accumulation. Subcellular localization prediction and experiments confirmed that MdGA2ox7 was located in the cytoplasm. Overexpression of MdGA2ox7 in Arabidopsis caused a lower level of active GA and led to GA-deficient phenotypes, such as dwarfism and delayed flowering. MdGA2ox7 alleviated cold and salt stress damage in both Arabidopsis and apple in concert with melatonin (MT). Additionally, MdGA2ox7 enhanced anthocyanin biosynthesis in apple calli and activated genes involved in anthocyanin synthesis. These findings provide new insights into the functions of apple GA2ox in regulating development, stress tolerance, and secondary metabolism.

Structural mechanism of voltage-gated sodium channel slow inactivation

Voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels mediate a plethora of electrical activities. NaV channels govern cellular excitability in response to depolarizing stimuli. Inactivation is an intrinsic property of NaV channels that regulates cellular excitability by controlling the channel availability. The fast inactivation, mediated by the Ile-Phe-Met (IFM) motif and the N-terminal helix (N-helix), has been well-characterized. However, the molecular mechanism underlying NaV channel slow inactivation remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that the removal of the N-helix of NaVEh (NaVEhΔN) results in a slow-inactivated channel, and present cryo-EM structure of NaVEhΔN in a potential slow-inactivated state. The structure features a closed activation gate and a dilated selectivity filter (SF), indicating that the upper SF and the inner gate could serve as a gate for slow inactivation. In comparison to the NaVEh structure, NaVEhΔN undergoes marked conformational shifts on the intracellular side. Together, our results provide important mechanistic insights into NaV channel slow inactivation.

Comprehensive quantitative determination of aquifer confinement based on tidal response of well water level and its application in North China

Aquifer confinement represents a pivotal property that significantly influences the vulnerability and contamination risk of groundwater resources. Several methods have been proposed for determining aquifer confinement by analyzing the response of well water level to Earth tides and atmospheric tides. In this study, we evaluated the performance of the existing single methods and put forward an optimized comprehensive approach. We compared the determination results of the three single methods with those of a comprehensive method using water-level data from 39 earthquake precursor monitoring wells in North China. The results demonstrate that the comprehensive method effectively determined aquifer confinement, significantly reducing the uncertainty associated with the three single methods. The application of the comprehensive method in North China reveals that aquifer confinement may undergo temporal variations during long-term continuous observation, especially in areas where the confining properties of aquifers may vary due to human activities and earthquakes. In such areas, the comprehensive method facilitates accurate assessment of groundwater vulnerability, as well as the potential dispersion of underground pollutants.

Obesity is associated with acute kidney injury in ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention: A national representative cohort study

BACKGROUND

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent and potentially life-threatening complication after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, the relationship between obesity and the risk of AKI in this specific patient population has not been previously examined.

METHODS

We queried the National Inpatient Sample (2016-2019) using ICD-10 codes to obtain a sample of adults with STEMI undergoing PCI. All patients were further subcategorized into obese and nonobese cohorts. The primary outcome was the incidence of AKI. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to assess the impact of obesity on AKI. The consistency of this correlation between subgroups was investigated using subgroup analysis and interaction testing.

RESULTS

A total of 62,599 (weighted national estimate of 529,016) patients were identified, of which 9.80% (n = 6137) had AKI. Obesity comprised 19.78% (n = 1214) of the AKI cohort. Obese patients were on average younger, male, white, and had more comorbidities. Additionally, there was a significant positive association between obesity and AKI incidence (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.24, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.15-1.34), which was more pronounced in female patients (aOR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.33-1.82, p < 0.001, p-interaction = 0.008). The AKI incidence in these patients increased steadily during the 4-year study period, and it was consistently higher in obese patients than in nonobese patients (p-trend < 0.001 for all).

CONCLUSIONS

Obesity was independently associated with a greater risk of AKI among adults with STEMI undergoing PCI, particularly in female patients.

Innovation and evaluation of vocational pharmaceutical education system under the 1 + X certificate system in China

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

The 1 + X certificate system, introduced in China in 2019, integrates academic credentials with vocational skill certificates to meet the heightened demand for skilled talents in the growing economy. This study aims to innovate and evaluate the vocational pharmaceutical education system under the 1 + X certificate framework, specifically addressing the gap between theoretical education and workplace requirements.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A retrospective observational approach analyzed 490 pharmacy students over two academic years. The 2021 cohort underwent 1 + X integrated education, while the 2020 cohort followed conventional education. We collaborated closely with industry partners to identify and compile typical job competencies, formulating work projects aligned with industry demands. Combining the skill level standards and assessment content of "1+X Pharmaceutical Purchasing and Sales" and "1+X Pharmaceutical Preparation", we revised the course standards, incorporating typical work projects into the 2021 pharmacy professional teaching curriculum. This constituted the fundamental content of the 1 + X education reform. Statistical analysis compared course scores and 1 + X certificate examination performance.

RESULTS

The 2021 cohort, under the 1 + X educational model, demonstrated higher average scores in pharmacy courses, with significant improvements in pharmacology (1 + X vs. Traditional education: 58.40 ± 14.20 vs. 53.44 ± 14.67), clinical pharmacotherapy (72.74 ± 10.28 vs. 63.15 ± 11.03), and pharmaceutical distribution and marketing (79.34 ± 10.96 vs. 67.50 ± 15.82). 1 + X certificate pass rates and satisfaction with the model were also higher than the 2020 cohort.

CONCLUSION

The 1 + X certificate system is useful for developing talent in Chinese vocational education, effectively integrating assessments with industry standards. Future research should aim at evaluating long-term outcomes and improving quantitative skills assessments for enhanced effectiveness.

Immunogenic Cell Death Induction and Oxygenation by Multifunctional Hollow Silica/Copper-Doped Carbon Dots

The metastasis and recurrence of cancer are related to immunosuppression and hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment. Activating immune activity and improving the hypoxic environment face essential challenges. This paper reports on a multifunctional nanomaterial, HSCCMBC, that induces immunogenic cell death through powerful photodynamic therapy/chemodynamic therapy synergistic antitumor effects. The tumor microenvironment changed from the immunosuppressive type to immune type, activated the immune activity of the system, decomposed hydrogen peroxide to generate oxygen based on Fenton-like reaction, and effectively increased the level of intracellular O2 with the assistance of 3-bromopyruvate, a cell respiratory inhibitor. The structure and composition of HSCCMBC were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, etc. Oxygen probe RDPP was used to investigate the oxygen level inside and outside the cell, and hydroxyl radical probe tetramethylbenzidine was used to investigate the Fenton-like reaction ability. The immunofluorescence method investigated the expression of various immune markers and hypoxia-inducing factors in vitro and in vivo after treatment. In vitro and in vivo experiments indicate that HSCCMBC is an excellent antitumor agent and is expected to be a candidate drug for antitumor immunotherapy.

Impulsivity and neural correlates of response inhibition in bipolar disorder and their unaffected relatives: A MEG study

BACKGROUND

Response inhibition is a core cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder (BD), leading to increased impulsivity in BD. However, the relationship between the neural mechanisms underlying impaired response inhibition and impulsivity in BD is not yet clear. Individuals who are genetically predisposed to BD give a way of identifying potential endophenotypes.

METHODS

A total of 97 participants, including 39 patients with BD, 22 unaffected relatives (UR) of patients with BD, and 36 healthy controls performed a Go/No-Go task during magnetoencephalography. We carried out time-frequency and connectivity analysis on MEG data.

RESULTS

Decreased beta power, prolonged latency and increased peak frequency in rIFG, decreased beta power in pre-SMA and reduced rIFG-to-pre-SMA connectivity were found in BD relative to healthy controls. In the UR group, we found a decrease in the beta power of pre-SMA and prolonged latency of rIFG. Furthermore, increased motor impulsiveness in BD was related to abnormal alterations in beta oscillatory activity of rIFG and functional connectivity between rIFG and pre-SMA.

CONCLUSIONS

Hypoactivity activity in rIFG and impaired dominant role of rIFG in the prefrontal control network may underlie the neuropathology of response inhibition dysfunction, resulting increased motor impulsivity in BD. Our findings point to measuring rIFG dysfunction as a potential means of identifying individuals at genetic high risk for transition to BD disease expression.

Alveoli-Inspired Carbon Cathodes with Interconnected Porous Structure and Asymmetric Coordinated Vanadium Sites for Superior Li-S Batteries

Accelerating sulfur conversion catalysis to alleviate the shuttle effect has become a novel paradigm for effective Li-S batteries. Although nitrogen-coordinated metal single-atom (M-N4) catalysts have been investigated, further optimizing its utilization rate and catalytic activities is urgently needed for practical applications. Inspired by the natural alveoli tissue with interconnected structure and well-distributed enzyme catalytic sites on the wall for the simultaneously fast diffusion and in situ catalytic conversion of substrates, here, we proposed the controllable synthesis of bioinspired carbon cathode with interconnected porous structure and asymmetric coordinated V-S1N3 sites for efficient and stable Li-S batteries. The enzyme-mimetic V-S1N3 shows asymmetric electronic distribution and high tunability, therefore enhancing in situ polysulfide conversion activities. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the high charge asymmetry degree and large atom radius of S in V-S1N3 result in sloping adsorption for polysulfide, thereby exhibiting low thermodynamic energy barriers and long-range stability (0.076 % decay over 600 cycles).

Insights into Chitin-Degradation Potential of Shewanella khirikhana JW44 with Emphasis on Characterization and Function of a Chitinase Gene SkChi65

Chitin, a polymer of β-1,4-linked N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), can be degraded into valuable oligosaccharides by various chitinases. In this study, the genome of Shewanella khirikhana JW44, displaying remarkable chitinolytic activity, was investigated to understand its chitin-degradation potential. A chitinase gene SkChi65 from this strain was then cloned, expressed, and purified to characterize its enzymatic properties and substrate hydrolysis. Genome analysis showed that, of the 14 genes related to chitin utilization in JW44, six belonged to glycoside hydrolase (GH) families because of their functional domains for chitin binding and catalysis. The recombinant chitinase SkChi65, consisting of 1129 amino acids, was identified as a member of the GH18 family and possessed two chitin-binding domains with a typical motif of [A/N]KWWT[N/S/Q] and one catalytic domain with motifs of DxxDxDxE, SxGG, YxR, and [E/D]xx[V/I]. SkChi65 was heterologously expressed as an active protein of 139.95 kDa best at 37 °C with 1.0 mM isopropyl-β-d-thiogalactopyranoside induction for 6 h. Purified SkChi65 displayed high stability over the ranges of 30-50 °C and pH 5.5-8.0 with optima at 40 °C and pH 7.0. The kinetic parameters Km, Vmax, and kcat of SkChi65 towards colloidal chitin were 27.2 μM, 299.2 μMs-1, and 10,203 s-1, respectively. In addition to colloidal chitin, SkChi65 showed high activity towards glycol chitosan and crystalline chitin. After analysis by thin-layer chromatography, the main products were N,N'-diacetylchitobiose, and GlcNAc with (GlcNAc)2-6 used as substrates. Collectively, SkChi65 could exhibit both exo- and endochitinase activities towards diverse substrates, and strain JW44 has a high potential for industrial application with an excellent capacity for chitin bioconversion.

Structure-function coupling and hierarchy-specific antidepressant response in major depressive disorder

BACKGROUND

Extensive research has explored altered structural and functional networks in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, studies examining the relationships between structure and function yielded heterogeneous and inconclusive results. Recent work has suggested that the structure-function relationship is not uniform throughout the brain but varies across different levels of functional hierarchy. This study aims to investigate changes in structure-function couplings (SFC) and their relevance to antidepressant response in MDD from a functional hierarchical perspective.

METHODS

We compared regional SFC between individuals with MDD (n = 258) and healthy controls (HC, n = 99) using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging. We also compared antidepressant non-responders (n = 55) and responders (n = 68, defined by a reduction in depressive severity of >50%). To evaluate variations in altered and response-associated SFC across the functional hierarchy, we ranked significantly different regions by their principal gradient values and assessed patterns of increase or decrease along the gradient axis. The principal gradient value, calculated from 219 healthy individuals in the Human Connectome Project, represents a region's position along the principal gradient axis.

RESULTS

Compared to HC, MDD patients exhibited increased SFC in unimodal regions (lower principal gradient) and decreased SFC in transmodal regions (higher principal gradient) (p < 0.001). Responders primarily had higher SFC in unimodal regions and lower SFC in attentional networks (median principal gradient) (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings reveal opposing SFC alterations in low-level unimodal and high-level transmodal networks, underscoring spatial variability in MDD pathology. Moreover, hierarchy-specific antidepressant effects provide valuable insights into predicting treatment outcomes.

Immunoantitumor Activity and Oxygenation Effect Based on Iron-Copper-Doped Folic Acid Carbon Dots

Cancer metastasis and recurrence are closely associated with immunosuppression and a hypoxic tumor microenvironment. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and photothermodynamic therapy (PTT) have been shown to induce immunogenic cell death (ICD), effectively inhibiting cancer metastasis and recurrence when combined with immune adjuvants. However, the limited efficacy of Fenton's reaction and suboptimal photothermal effect present significant challenges for successfully inducing ICD through CDT and PTT. This paper described the synthesis and immunoantitumor activity of the novel iron-copper-doped folic acid carbon dots (CFCFB). Copper-doped folic acid carbon dots (Cu-FACDs) were initially synthesized via a hydrothermal method, using folic acid and copper gluconate as precursors. Subsequently, the nanoparticles CFCFB were obtained through cross-linking and self-assembly of Cu-FACDs with ferrocene dicarboxylic acid (FeDA) and 3-bromopyruvic acid (3BP). The catalytic effect of carbon dots in CFCFB enhanced the activity of the Fenton reaction, thereby promoting CDT-induced ICD and increasing the intracellular oxygen concentration. Additionally, 3BP inhibited cellular respiration, further amplifying the oxygen concentration. The photothermal conversion efficiency of CFCFB reached 55.8%, which significantly enhanced its antitumor efficacy through photothermal therapy. Immunofluorescence assay revealed that treatment with CFCFB led to an increased expression of ICD markers, including calreticulin (CRT) and ATP, as well as extracellular release of HMGB-1, indicating the induction of ICD by CFCFB. Moreover, the observed downregulation of ARG1 expression indicates a transition in the tumor microenvironment from an immunosuppressive state to an antitumor state following treatment with CFCFB. The upregulation of IL-2 and CD8 expression facilitated the differentiation of effector T cells, resulting in an augmented population of CD8+ T cells, thereby indicating the activation of systemic immune response.

Nitrided Rhodium Nanoclusters with Optimized Water Bonding and Splitting Effects for pH-Universal H2-Production

The nitridation of noble metals-based catalysts to further enhance their hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics in neutral and alkaline conditions would be an effective strategy for developing high-performance wide pH HER catalysts. Herein, a facile molten urea method is employed to construct the nitrided Rh nanoclusters (RhxN) supported on N-doped carbon (RhxN-NC). The uniformly distributed RhxN clusters exhibited optimized water bonding and splitting effects, therefore resulting in excellent pH-universal HER performance. The optimized RhxN-NC catalyst only requires 8, 12, and 109 mV overpotentials to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1.0 M KOH, and 1.0 M PBS electrolytes, respectively. The spectroscopic characterizations and theoretical calculation further confirm the vital role of Rh-N moieties in RhxN clusters in improving the transfer of electrons and facilitating the generation of H2. This work not only provides a suitable nitridation method for noble metal species in mild conditions but also makes a breakthrough in synthesizing noble metal nitrides-based electrocatalysts to achieve an exceptional wide-pH HER performance and other catalysis.

Polyoxometalate-Structured Materials: Molecular Fundamentals and Electrocatalytic Roles in Energy Conversion

Polyoxometalates (POMs), a kind of molecular metal oxide cluster with unique physical-chemical properties, have made essential contributions to creating efficient and robust electrocatalysts in renewable energy systems. Due to the fundamental advantages of POMs, such as the diversity of molecular structures and large numbers of redox active sites, numerous efforts have been devoted to extending their application areas. Up to now, various strategies of assembling POM molecules into superstructures, supporting POMs on heterogeneous substrates, and POMs-derived metal compounds have been developed for synthesizing electrocatalysts. From a multidisciplinary perspective, the latest advances in creating POM-structured materials with a unique focus on their molecular fundamentals, electrocatalytic roles, and the recent breakthroughs of POMs and POM-derived electrocatalysts, are systematically summarized. Notably, this paper focuses on exposing the current states, essences, and mechanisms of how POM-structured materials influence their electrocatalytic activities and discloses the critical requirements for future developments. The future challenges, objectives, comparisons, and perspectives for creating POM-structured materials are also systematically discussed. It is anticipated that this review will offer a substantial impact on stimulating interdisciplinary efforts for the prosperities and widespread utilizations of POM-structured materials in electrocatalysis.

Sex differences in anhedonia in bipolar depression: a resting-state fMRI study

Previous studies about anhedonia symptoms in bipolar depression (BD) ignored the unique role of gender on brain function. This study aims to explore the regional brain neuroimaging features of BD with anhedonia and the sex differences in these patients. The resting-fMRI by applying fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) method was estimated in 263 patients with BD (174 high anhedonia [HA], 89 low anhedonia [LA]) and 213 healthy controls. The effects of two different factors in patients with BD were analyzed using a 3 (group: HA, LA, HC) × 2 (sex: male, female) ANOVA. The fALFF values were higher in the HA group than in the LA group in the right medial cingulate gyrus and supplementary motor area. For the sex-by-group interaction, the fALFF values of the right hippocampus, left medial occipital gyrus, right insula, and bilateral medial cingulate gyrus were significantly higher in HA males than in LA males but not females. These results suggested that the pattern of high activation could be a marker of anhedonia symptoms in BD males, and the sex differences should be considered in future studies of BD with anhedonia symptoms.

ParTRE: A relational triple extraction model of complicated entities and imbalanced relations in Parkinson's disease

The relational triple extraction of unstructured medical texts about Parkinson's disease is critical for the construction of a medical knowledge graph. However, the triple entities in Parkinson's disease are usually complicated and overlapped, which impedes the accuracy of triple extraction, especially in the case of rarely available corpus. Therefore, this study first builds a corpus about Parkinson's disease. Then, a tagging-based three-stage relational triple extraction model is proposed, named ParTRE. To enhance the contextual representation of sentences, the proposed model employs BiLSTM modules to capture fine-grained semantic information. Additionally, a conditional normalization layer is used so that entity pairs can be extracted accurately from two complementary directions. As for the imbalanced relationship categories, an adaptive loss function strategy based on focal loss is derived by assigning different weights to relationship categories and reducing the loss of easy-to-classify samples. The model performance is evaluated on the Parkinson's corpus and public datasets. The results indicate that the proposed model achieves an overall F1-score of 93.3 % on the Parkinson's corpus and comparable performance on public datasets compared with the state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, a satisfactory result is achieved by the proposed model on conquering the overlapped entities and imbalanced relationship categories. Owing to demonstrated availability and validity, the proposed method can be integrated with medical knowledge graphs and therefore benefits medical intelligence.

Distinct MRI-based functional and structural connectivity for antidepressant response prediction in major depressive disorder

OBJECTIVE

Emerging studies have identified treatment-related connectome predictors in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, quantifying treatment-responsive patterns in structural connectivity (SC) and functional connectivity (FC) simultaneously remains underexplored. We aimed to evaluate whether spatial distributions of FC and SC associated treatment responses are shared or unique.

METHODS

Diffusion tensor imaging and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging were collected from 210 patients with MDD at baseline. We separately developed connectome-based prediction models (CPM) to predict reduction of depressive severity after 6-week monotherapy based on structural, functional, and combined connectomes, then validated them on the external dataset. We identified the predictive SC and FC from CPM with high occurrence frequencies during the cross-validation.

RESULTS

Structural connectomes (r = 0.2857, p < 0.0001), functional connectomes (r = 0.2057, p = 0.0025), and their combined CPM (r = 0.4, p < 0.0001) can significantly predict a reduction of depressive severity. We didn't find shared connectivity between predictive FC and SC. Specifically, the most predictive FC stemmed from the default mode network, while predictive SC was mainly characterized by within-network SC of fronto-limbic networks.

CONCLUSIONS

These distinct patterns suggest that SC and FC capture unique connectivity concerning the antidepressant response.

SIGNIFICANCE

Our findings provide comprehensive insights into the neurophysiology of antidepressants response.

Based on white matter microstructure to early identify bipolar disorder from patients with depressive episode

OBJECTIVE

Because of similar clinical manifestations, bipolar disorder (BD) patients are often misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder (MDD). This study aimed to compare the difference between depressed patients later converting to BD and unipolar depression (UD) according to diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).

METHOD

Patients with MDD (562 participants) in depressive episode states and healthy controls (HCs) (145 participants) were recruited over 10 years. Demographic and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were collected at the time of recruitment. All patients with MDD were followed up for 5 years and classified into the transfer to BD (tBD) group (83 participants) and UD group (160 participants) according to the follow-up results. DTI and functional magnetic resonance imaging at baseline were compared.

RESULTS

Common abnormalities were found in both tBD and UD groups, including left superior cerebellar peduncle (SCP.L), right anterior limb of the internal capsule (ALIC.R), right superior fronto-occipital fasciculus (SFOF.R), and right inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF.R). The tBD showed more extensive abnormalities than the UD in the body of corpus callosum, fornix, left superior corona radiata, left posterior corona radiata, left superior longitudinal fasciculus, and left superior fronto-occipital fasciculus.

CONCLUSION

The study demonstrated the common and distinct abnormalities of tBD and UD when compared to HC. The tBD group showed more extensive disruptions of white matter integrity, which could be a potential biomarker for the early identification of BD.

Synthesis of Superelastic, Highly Conductive Graphene Aerogel/Liquid Metal Foam and its Piezoresistive Application

Graphene aerogel (GA) has important application potential as piezoresistive sensors due to its low density, high conductivity, high porosity, and good mechanical properties. However, the fabrication of GA-based sensors with good mechanical properties and excellent sensing performance is still challenging. Herein, liquid- metal-modified GAs (GA/LM) are proposed for the development of an excellent GA-based sensor. GA/LM with three-dimensional interconnected layered structure exhibits excellent compressive stress of 41 KPa and fast response time (<20 ms). While generally flexible GA composites cannot be compressed beyond 80 % strain without plastic deformation, GA/LM demonstrates a high compressive strength of 60 kPa under a strain of 90 %. A real-time pressure sensor was fabricated based on GA/LM-2 to monitor swallowing, pulse beating, finger, wrist and knee bending, and even plantar pressure during walking. These excellent features enable potential applications in health detection.

Intensity and drivers of subtypes interference between seasonal influenza viruses in mainland China: A modeling study

Subtype interference has a significant impact on the epidemiological patterns of seasonal influenza viruses (SIVs). We used attributable risk percent [the absolute value of the ratio of the effective reproduction number (Rₑ) of different subtypes minus one] to quantify interference intensity between A/H1N1 and A/H3N2, as well as B/Victoria and B/Yamagata. The interference intensity between A/H1N1 and A/H3N2 was higher in southern China 0.26 (IQR: 0.11-0.46) than in northern China 0.17 (IQR: 0.07-0.24). Similarly, interference intensity between B/Victoria and B/Yamagata was also higher in southern China 0.14 (IQR: 0.07-0.24) than in norther China 0.10 (IQR: 0.04-0.18). High relative humidity significantly increased subtype interference, with the highest relative risk reaching 20.59 (95% CI: 6.12-69.33) in southern China. Southern China exhibited higher levels of subtype interference, particularly between A/H1N1 and A/H3N2. Higher relative humidity has a more pronounced promoting effect on subtype interference.

Enhancing Surgical Nursing Student Performance: Comparative Study of Simulation-Based Learning and Problem-Based Learning

Background

Surgical nursing is a high-risk, high-pressure, and complex field. Nurses need extensive knowledge, skills, and abilities. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Simulation-Based Learning (SBL) are effective student-centered methods. Which method is better for surgical nurse training? More research is needed to determine the best approach for undergraduate surgical nurse education.

Purpose

To compare the impact of PBL and SBL on undergraduate nursing students' performance and improve learning outcomes in surgical nursing education.

Methods

We used a pretest/post-test design with 318 nursing undergraduates randomly assigned to two groups. Participants completed three progressive scenarios focused on surgical nursing cases. Experts blindly reviewed video recordings using the 70-item Korean Nurses' Core Competence Scale (KNCCS) to assess performance. The 13-item Satisfaction and Self-confidence in learning Scale (SSS) measured learning confidence and satisfaction. SBL participants also completed the 16-item Educational Practices in Simulation Scale (EPSS) and 20-item Simulation Design Scale (SDS).

Results

The study found significant positive effects on both groups, with noticeable improvements in post-test, retention, and follow-up test results (P < 0.001). The SBL group showed higher competency levels in nurses (P < 0.001). The Cohen's d and effect size (r) for various skills were as follows: clinical performance (0.84767 and 6.39023), critical thinking (0.31017 and 0.15325), professional attitude (0.85868 and 0.39452), and communication skills (1.55149 and 0.61294). The satisfaction and self-confidence of nurses were higher in the SBL group (4.53±0.596; 4.47±0.611) compared to the PBL group (4.32±0.689; 4.25±0.632) in all dimensions of SSS (all P < 0.05). The SBL group also scored high in simulation design and EPSS. However, improvements are needed in fidelity, objectives, information, and students' expectations.

Conclusion

SBL and PBL improve nurses' core competence, satisfaction, and self-confidence. SBL is superior. This study promotes student-centered education, enhancing surgical nursing professionals' quality and ensuring future patient safety.

Abnormal stability of spontaneous neuronal activity as a predictor of diagnosis conversion from major depressive disorder to bipolar disorder

OBJECTIVE

Bipolar disorder (BD) is often misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder (MDD) in the early stage, which may lead to inappropriate treatment. This study aimed to characterize the alterations of spontaneous neuronal activity in patients with depressive episodes whose diagnosis transferred from MDD to BD.

METHODS

532 patients with MDD and 132 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited over 10 years. During the follow-up period, 75 participants with MDD transferred to BD (tBD), and 157 participants remained with the diagnosis of unipolar depression (UD). After excluding participants with poor image quality and excessive head movement, 68 participants with the diagnosis of tBD, 150 participants with the diagnosis of UD, and 130 HCs were finally included in the analysis. The dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (dALFF) of spontaneous neuronal activity was evaluated in tBD, UD and HC using functional magnetic resonance imaging at study inclusion. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to evaluate sensitivity and specificity of the conversion prediction from MDD to BD based on dALFF.

RESULTS

Compared to HC, tBD exhibited elevated dALFF at left premotor cortex (PMC_L), right lateral temporal cortex (LTC_R) and right early auditory cortex (EAC_R), and UD showed reduced dALFF at PMC_L, left paracentral lobule (PCL_L), bilateral medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), right orbital frontal cortex (OFC_R), right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC_R), right posterior cingulate cortex (PCC_R) and elevated dALFF at LTC_R. Furthermore, tBD exhibited elevated dALFF at PMC_L, PCL_L, bilateral mPFC, bilateral OFC, DLPFC_R, PCC_R and LTC_R than UD. In addition, ROC analysis based on dALFF in differential areas obtained an area under the curve (AUC) of 72.7%.

CONCLUSIONS

The study demonstrated the temporal dynamic abnormalities of tBD and UD in the critical regions of the somatomotor network (SMN), default mode network (DMN), and central executive network (CEN). The differential abnormal patterns of temporal dynamics between the two diseases have the potential to predict the diagnosis transition from MDD to BD.

2D Nano-Channeled Molybdenum Compounds for Accelerating Interfacial Polysulfides Catalysis in Li-S Battery

The shuttle effect, which causes the loss of active sulfur, passivation of lithium anode, and leads to severe capacity attenuation, is currently the main bottleneck for lithium-sulfur batteries. Recent studies have disclosed that molybdenum compounds possess exceptional advantages as a polar substrate to immobilize and catalyze lithium polysulfide such as high conductivity and strong sulfiphilicity. However, these materials show incomplete contact with sulfur/polysulfides, which causes uneven redox conversion of sulfur and results in poor rate performance. Herein, a new type of 2D nano-channeled molybdenum compounds (2D-MoNx) via the 2D organic-polyoxometalate superstructure for accelerating interfacial polysulfide catalysis toward high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries is reported. The 2D-MoNx shows well-interlinked nano-channels, which increase the reactive interface and contact surface with polysulfides. Therefore, the battery equipped with 2D-MoNx displays a high discharge capacity of 912.7 mAh g-1 at 1 C and the highest capacity retention of 523.7 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles. Even at the rate of 2 C, the capacity retention can be maintained at 526.6 mAh g-1 after 300 cycles. This innovative nano-channel and interfacial design of 2D-MoNx provides new nanostructures to optimize the sulfur redox chemistry and eliminate the shuttle effect of polysulfides.

Perioperative Vision Loss Following Prone Spine Surgery: A Case-Control Study

PURPOSE

Perioperative vision loss (POVL) is a rare and devastating complication following prone spine surgery. Due to the rare nature of this complication, there is limited research available about patient and surgical risk factors that increase the risk of POVL. The objective of this study was to investigate associated risk factors for POVL with use of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database.

DESIGN

This study used a case-control secondary data analysis methodology that included five cases of POVL and 250 controls from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database who all underwent prone spine surgery between 2010 and 2020.

METHODS

Each POVL case was matched to 50 randomly selected controls (n = 250) based on type and year of surgery. Demographics and variables of interest were compared among the POVL cases, among POVL cases and the aggregate control group (n = 250), and POVL cases against their matched control group. Univariate and multivariate conditional logistic regression were then used to estimate the odds of developing POVL in relation to potential patient and surgical risk factors.

FINDINGS

When POVL cases were compared to the 250 control cases using univariate analysis, patients who developed POVL were more likely to have received a blood transfusion within 72 hours of surgery (P < .0001). and have longer operative times (odds ratio = 1.01, 95% CI [1.003, 1.017], P = .003).

CONCLUSIONS

Two surgical risk factors were determined to be statistically significant, including the need for perioperative blood transfusion and prolonged operative time. These findings support previous research on POVL which often identified blood loss and prolonged operative times as surgical risk factors. The narrow patient population used in this project may have limited the ability to perform a more robust study on POVL. Therefore, further research on POVL using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database is strongly encouraged.

Microstructural and functional alterations of the ventral pallidum are associated with levodopa-induced dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

The ventral pallidum (VP) regulates involuntary movements, but it is unclear whether the VP regulates the abnormal involuntary movements in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients who have levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID). To further understand the role of the VP in PD patients with LID (PD-LID), we explored the structural and functional characteristics of the VP in such patients using multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

METHODS

Thirty-one PD-LID patients, 39 PD patients without LID (PD-nLID), and 28 healthy controls (HCs) underwent T1-weighted MRI, quantitative susceptibility mapping, multi-shell diffusion MRI, and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). Different measures characterizing the VP were obtained using a region-of-interest-based approach.

RESULTS

The left VP in the PD-LID group showed significantly higher intracellular volume fraction (ICVF) and isotropic volume fraction (IsoVF) compared with the PD-nLID and HC groups. Rs-MRI revealed that, compared with the PD-nLID group, the PD-LID group in the medication 'off' state had higher functional connectivity (FC) between the left VP and the left anterior caudate, left middle frontal gyrus and left precentral gyrus, as well as between the right VP and the right posterior ventral putamen and right mediodorsal thalamus. In addition, the ICVF values of the left VP, the FC between the left VP and the left anterior caudate and left middle frontal gyrus were positively correlated with Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale scores.

CONCLUSION

Our multimodal imaging findings show that the microstructural changes of the VP (i.e., the higher ICVF and IsoVF) and the functional change in the ventral striatum-VP-mediodorsal thalamus-cortex network may be associated with pathophysiological mechanisms of PD-LID.

Bioactivities and Structure-Activity Relationships of Maslinic Acid Derivatives: A Review

Maslinic acid has a variety of biological activities, such as anti-tumor, hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-parasitic. In order to enhance the biological activity of maslinic acid, scholars have carried out a lot of structural modifications, and found some more valuable maslinic acid derivatives. In this paper, the structural modification, biological activity, and structure-activity relationship of maslinic acid were reviewed, providing references for the development of maslinic acid.

Transport and inhibition mechanisms of human VMAT2

Vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) accumulates monoamines in presynaptic vesicles for storage and exocytotic release, and has a vital role in monoaminergic neurotransmission1-3. Dysfunction of monoaminergic systems causes many neurological and psychiatric disorders, including Parkinson's disease, hyperkinetic movement disorders and depression4-6. Suppressing VMAT2 with reserpine and tetrabenazine alleviates symptoms of hypertension and Huntington's disease7,8, respectively. Here we describe cryo-electron microscopy structures of human VMAT2 complexed with serotonin and three clinical drugs at 3.5-2.8 Å, demonstrating the structural basis for transport and inhibition. Reserpine and ketanserin occupy the substrate-binding pocket and lock VMAT2 in cytoplasm-facing and lumen-facing states, respectively, whereas tetrabenazine binds in a VMAT2-specific pocket and traps VMAT2 in an occluded state. The structures in three distinct states also reveal the structural basis of the VMAT2 transport cycle. Our study establishes a structural foundation for the mechanistic understanding of substrate recognition, transport, drug inhibition and pharmacology of VMAT2 while shedding light on the rational design of potential therapeutic agents.

Evaluation of the Efficacy of a Lactobacilli-Based Teat Detergents for the Microbiota of Cows Teats Using an Untargeted Metabolomics Approach

Teat cleaning pre- and post-milking is important for the overall health and hygiene of dairy cows. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of a teat detergents based on lactic acid bacteria according to changes in somatic cell count and cow-milk metabolites. Sixty-nine raw milk samples were collected from 11 Holstein-Friesian cows in China during 12 days of teat cleaning. An ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry-based untargeted metabolomic approach was applied to detect metabolomic differences after treatment with lactic acid bacteria and chemical teat detergents in cows with subclinical mastitis. The results suggest that the lactobacilli-based teat detergents could reduce somatic cell count and improve microhabitat of cow teat apex by adjusting the composition of metabolites. Furthermore, the somatic cell count could be decreased significantly within 10 days following the cleaning protocol. Lactic acid bacteria have the potential to be applied as a substitution to teat chemical detergents before and after milking for maintenance of healthy teats and breasts. Further, larger scale validation work is required to support the findings of the current study.

Research on Time Series-Based Pipeline Ground Penetrating Radar Calibration Angle Prediction Algorithm

The pipeline ground-penetrating radar stands as an indispensable detection device for ensuring underground space security. A wheeled pipeline robot is deployed to traverse the interior of urban underground drainage pipelines along their central axis. It is subject to influences such as resistance, speed, and human factors, leading to deviations in its posture. A guiding wheel is employed to rectify its roll angle and ensure the precise spatial positioning of defects both inside and outside the pipeline, as detected by the radar antenna. By analyzing its deflection factors and correction trajectories, the intelligent correction control of the pipeline ground-penetrating radar falls into the realm of nonlinear multi-constraint optimization. Consequently, a time-series-based correction angle prediction algorithm is proposed. The application of the long short-term memory (LSTM) deep learning model facilitates the prediction of correction angles and torque for the guiding wheel. This study compares the performance of LSTM with an autoregressive integrated moving average model under identical dataset conditions. The subsequent findings reveal a reduction of 4.11° and 8.25 N·m in mean absolute error, and a decrease of 10.66% and 7.27% in mean squared error for the predicted correction angles and torques, respectively. These outcomes are achieved utilizing the three-channel drainage pipeline ground-penetrating radar device with top antenna operating at 1.2 GHz and left/right antennas at 750 MHz. The LSTM prediction model intelligently corrects its posture. Experimental results demonstrate an average correction speed of 5 s and an average angular error of ±1°. It is verified that the model can correct its attitude in real-time with small errors, thereby enhancing the accuracy of ground-penetrating radar antennas in locating pipeline defects.

Auto-suppression of Tet dioxygenases protects the mouse oocyte genome from oxidative demethylation

DNA cytosine methylation plays a vital role in repressing retrotransposons, and such derepression is linked with developmental failure, tumorigenesis and aging. DNA methylation patterns are formed by precisely regulated actions of DNA methylation writers (DNA methyltransferases) and erasers (TET, ten-eleven translocation dioxygenases). However, the mechanisms underlying target-specific oxidation of 5mC by TET dioxygenases remain largely unexplored. Here we show that a large low-complexity domain (LCD), located in the catalytic part of Tet enzymes, negatively regulates the dioxygenase activity. Recombinant Tet3 lacking LCD is shown to be hyperactive in converting 5mC into oxidized species in vitro. Endogenous expression of the hyperactive Tet3 mutant in mouse oocytes results in genome-wide 5mC oxidation. Notably, the occurrence of aberrant 5mC oxidation correlates with a consequent loss of the repressive histone mark H3K9me3 at ERVK retrotransposons. The erosion of both 5mC and H3K9me3 causes ERVK derepression along with upregulation of their neighboring genes, potentially leading to the impairment of oocyte development. These findings suggest that Tet dioxygenases use an intrinsic auto-regulatory mechanism to tightly regulate their enzymatic activity, thus achieving spatiotemporal specificity of methylome reprogramming, and highlight the importance of methylome integrity for development.

Links among genetic variants and hierarchical brain structural and functional networks for antidepressant treatment: A multivariate study

BACKGROUND

Antidepressant treatment effects are strongly heritable and have substantial effects on brain function and structure, but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. In this research, we aimed to evaluate the factors of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and hierarchical brain structural and functional networks that were associated with antidepressant treatment. Moreover, we further explored the correlations and mediation pattern among "brain structure-brain function-gene" in major depressive disorder (MDD).

METHODS

We analysed 405 SNPs and rich club/feeder/local connections of hierarchical structural and functional networks with three-way parallel independent component analysis in 179 MDD patients. The group-discriminative independent components of the three modalities between responders and non-responders of antidepressant treatment were identified. Pearson correlations and mediation analysis were further utilized to investigate the associations among SNPs and connections of the structural and functional networks.

RESULTS

Notably, correlations with antidepressant treatment outcomes were found in structural, functional and SNP modalities simultaneously. The features of group-discriminative independent components included the shared feeder connections of hub regions with the inferior frontal orbital gyrus and amygdala in structural and functional modalities and genes enriched in circadian rhythmic processes and dopaminergic synapse pathways. The structural feeder network displayed close correlations with SNPs and the functional feeder network. Furthermore, the structural feeder network could mediate the association between SNPs and the functional feeder network, implying that genetic variants might influence brain function by affecting brain structure in MDD.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings provide potential biomarkers for antidepressant therapy and provide a better grasp of the associations among SNPs and hierarchical structural and functional networks in MDD.

Abnormal fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations and regional homogeneity in major depressive disorder with non-suicidal self-injury

OBJECTIVE

We conducted this resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) study to characterize changes in regional homogeneity (ReHo) or fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) in young adult patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), with or without non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI).

METHODS

We recruited 54 MDD patients with NSSI (MDD/NSSI), 68 MDD patients without NSSI, which is referred to as simple MDD (sMDD), and 66 matched healthy controls (HCs). A combination of fALFF and ReHo analyses was conducted. The effects of NSSI on the brain and their relationship to clinical variables were examined in this study.

RESULTS

MDD/NSSI patients have decreased fALFF in the right superior frontal gyrus (SFG) and the right inferior parietal lobe (IPL), decreased ReHo in the right SFG and the right middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and the left middle occipital gyrus (MOG). fALFF and ReHo values of the right SFG are positively correlated. The ReHo values of the right SFG and the number of recent self-injuries are positively correlated; the fALFF values of the right SFG are negatively correlated with NSSI severity.

CONCLUSIONS

There is a difference in brain activity between MDD/NSSI and sMDD, which may serve as an important physiological marker to determine the risk of self-injury and suicide.

SIGNIFICANCE

Abnormal brain activity in patients with NSSI may provide new perspectives and significant implications on the severity of MDD patients and the prevention of self-injury and suicide.

Enhancing physiological recovery and subsequent exercise performance in the heat using a phase-change material cooling blanket

This study aimed to assess the effect of a phase-change material (PCM) cooling blanket for cooling between exercise bouts on recovery of physiological parameters and subsequent exercise performance in the heat. Eighteen male volunteers were recruited to participate in human trials involving two exhaustive treadmill running bouts (Bout1 for 3 km and Bout2 for 1.5 km) in a climate chamber (temperature = 33 °C; relative humidity = 40%). Participants were randomly subjected to one of two cooling conditions for a 10-min period between exercise bouts: CON: natural cooling; 10-min PCM: with a PCM cooling blanket for 10 min. Several physiological parameters including mean skin temperature (Tskin), oral temperature (Toral), core temperature (Tcore), heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), respiratory rate (RR), peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2), average running speed and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scale score were analyzed. The results showed that compared to the CON group, participants in the 10-min PCM group had a significant lower Tskin, Tcore, HR and RR at post-cooling, as well as greater reductions in mean skin temperature (ΔTskin) and core temperature (ΔTcore) from post-Bout1 to post-cooling. Additionally, the 10-min PCM group exhibited significantly lower peak Tcore, peak HR and RPE scale score during Bout2, while the average running speed during Bout2 was significantly higher. The present study suggests that cooling with a PCM cooling blanket can enhance physiological recovery and subsequent exercise performance in the heat.

Iatrogenic flexor tendon rupture caused by misdiagnosing sarcoidosis-related flexor tendon contracture as tenosynovitis: A case report

BACKGROUND

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease characterized by granuloma formation in various organs. Sarcoidosis-related flexor tendon contractures are uncommon in clinical settings. This contracture is similar to stenosing tenosynovitis and potentially leads to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. Herein, we report a rare case of sarcoidosis-related finger flexor tendon contracture that was misdiagnosed as tenosynovitis.

CASE SUMMARY

A 44-year-old woman presented to our department with flexion contracture of the right ring and middle fingers. The patient was misdiagnosed with tenosynovitis and underwent acupotomy release of the A1 pulley of the middle finger in another hospital that resulted in iatrogenic rupture of both the superficial and profundus flexors. Radiological presentation showed multiple sarcoid involvements in the pulmonary locations and ipsilateral forearm. A diagnosis of sarcoidosis was made based on the presence of non-caseating granulomas with tubercles consisting of Langhans giant cells with lymphocyte infiltration on biopsy, and the patient underwent surgical repair for the contracture. After 2 mo, the patient experienced another spontaneous rupture of the repaired middle finger tendon and underwent surgical re-repair. Satisfactory results were achieved at the 10 mo follow-up after reoperation.

CONCLUSION

Sarcoidosis-related finger contractures are rare; thus, caution should be exercised when dealing with such patients to avoid incorrect treatment.

Acceptance of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine among General Men and Men with a Same-Sex Orientation and Its Influencing Factors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine reduces the prevalence of genital warts and the cancers they are associated with in males. However, the vaccination of males has always been neglected. Here, we performed a meta-analysis to comprehend the acceptability of the HPV vaccine in men and the factors impacting vaccination intentions. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Ovid, CNKI, and Wan Fang up to 5 July 2023 for studies that reported HPV vaccine acceptance among men. A random effects model was used to obtain the pooled acceptance rate, and subgroup analysis was performed. Then, the influencing factors of HPV vaccination in males were analyzed. A total of 57 studies with 32,962 samples were included in the analysis. The overall acceptance rate of the HPV vaccine in general men was 47.04% (95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 39.23-54.93%), and 62.23% (95% CI: 52.93-71.10%) among those whose sexual orientation contained men. HPV vaccine acceptance rates differed significantly between the two populations (p = 0.01). The population with a medical background (46.23%, 95% CI: 40.28-52.24%) was more willing to be vaccinated. In comparison to the employed population (66.93%, 95% CI: 48.79-82.81%) and the unemployed (68.44%, 95% CI: 52.82-82.23%), vaccination acceptance rates were lower among students (47.35%, 95% CI: 37.00-57.81%) (p = 0.04). The most significant barriers to vaccination were perceived low risk of infection for themselves (45.91%, 95% CI: 31.73-60.43%), followed by vaccine cost (43.46%, 95% CI: 31.20-56.13%). Moreover, the recommendations from medical professionals (60.90%, 95%CI: 44.23-76.37%) and sexual partners (60.09%, 95%CI: 27.11-88.67%) were significant factors in promoting vaccination. Overall, acceptance of the HPV vaccine among general men was at a lower level, despite being slightly higher among men with a same-sex orientation. Popularizing knowledge about diseases and vaccines, encouraging medical professionals to recommend vaccines to men, or reducing the cost of vaccines may promote HPV vaccination.

Semantic-Disentangled Transformer With Noun-Verb Embedding for Compositional Action Recognition

Recognizing actions performed on unseen objects, known as Compositional Action Recognition (CAR), has attracted increasing attention in recent years. The main challenge is to overcome the distribution shift of "action-objects" pairs between the training and testing sets. Previous works for CAR usually introduce extra information (e.g. bounding box) to enhance the dynamic cues of video features. However, these approaches do not essentially eliminate the inherent inductive bias in the video, which can be regarded as the stumbling block for model generalization. Because the video features are usually extracted from the visually cluttered areas in which many objects cannot be removed or masked explicitly. To this end, this work attempts to implicitly accomplish semantic-level decoupling of "object-action" in the high-level feature space. Specifically, we propose a novel Semantic-Decoupling Transformer framework, dubbed as DeFormer, which contains two insightful sub-modules: Objects-Motion Decoupler (OMD) and Semantic-Decoupling Constrainer (SDC). In OMD, we initialize several learnable tokens incorporating annotation priors to learn an instance-level representation and then decouple it into the appearance feature and motion feature in high-level visual space. In SDC, we use textual information in the high-level language space to construct a dual-contrastive association to constrain the decoupled appearance feature and motion feature obtained in OMD. Extensive experiments verify the generalization ability of DeFormer. Specifically, compared to the baseline method, DeFormer achieves absolute improvements of 3%, 3.3%, and 5.4% under three different settings on STH-ELSE, while corresponding improvements on EPIC-KITCHENS-55 are 4.7%, 9.2%, and 4.4%. Besides, DeFormer gains state-of-the-art results either on ground-truth or detected annotations.

Migration and adsorption of naphthalene in road-deposited sediments from stormwater runoff: Impact of the particle size

In this study, we explored the impact of RDS particle size on the migration dynamics of RDS and naphthalene through rigorous wash-off experiments. The results illuminated that smaller RDS particles showed higher mobility in stormwater runoff. On the other hand, RDS particles larger than 150 μm showed migration ratios below 2 %, suggesting that naphthalene adsorbed on larger RDS primarily migrated in dissolved form. Furthermore, we investigated the migration behaviors of RDS and naphthalene under varied conditions, including rainfall intensity, duration, and naphthalene concentrations. Larger rainfall intensity promoted the naphthalene release from RDS, while long rainfall duration (≥10 min) impeded the migration velocities (≤2.91 %/5 min for RDS, and ≤3.32 %/5 min for corresponding naphthalene) of RDS and naphthalene. Additionally, higher naphthalene concentrations in RDS diminished migration ratios of dissolved naphthalene. Significantly, the maximum uptake of naphthalene on RDS was 6.02 mg/g by the adsorption Langmuir isotherm. Importantly, the adsorption process of naphthalene in RDS is primarily governed by the physical adsorption, as demonstrated by the successive desorption experiments, which showed the desorption rate of up to 87.32 %. Moreover, advanced characterizations such as XPS, FTIR and Raman spectra further confirmed the physical nature of the adsorption process. These findings may help the understanding of the migration behavior of other pollutants in urban surface particulates.

Toward High-Accuracy and Low-Latency Spiking Neural Networks With Two-Stage Optimization

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) operating with asynchronous discrete events show higher energy efficiency with sparse computation. A popular approach for implementing deep SNNs is artificial neural network (ANN)-SNN conversion combining both efficient training of ANNs and efficient inference of SNNs. However, the accuracy loss is usually nonnegligible, especially under few time steps, which restricts the applications of SNN on latency-sensitive edge devices greatly. In this article, we first identify that such performance degradation stems from the misrepresentation of the negative or overflow residual membrane potential in SNNs. Inspired by this, we decompose the conversion error into three parts: quantization error, clipping error, and residual membrane potential representation error. With such insights, we propose a two-stage conversion algorithm to minimize those errors, respectively. In addition, we show that each stage achieves significant performance gains in a complementary manner. By evaluating on challenging datasets including CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and ImageNet, the proposed method demonstrates the state-of-the-art performance in terms of accuracy, latency, and energy preservation. Furthermore, our method is evaluated using a more challenging object detection task, revealing notable gains in regression performance under ultralow latency, when compared with existing spike-based detection algorithms. Virtual Visits for Developmental Screening in High-Risk Infants

INTRODUCTION

The High-Risk Infant Follow-Up program screens neonatal intensive care unit graduates for developmental delays and refers patients to physical, occupational, or speech therapy. At Kaiser Permanente Downey, the High-Risk Infant Follow-Up program assessed development via video visits during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study compares rates of enrollment in and referral to therapies and California Regional Center services between infants assessed by video visits and those assessed in person.

METHODS

Study participants included infants in the High-Risk Infant Follow-Up program between March 2020 and March 2021 with developmental assessments at adjusted ages 6, 12, and 18 months. Rates of enrollment in services and referral to physical, occupational, and speech therapy and Regional Center services were compared between infants assessed virtually and in person.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences in rates of enrollment or referral to physical, occupational, or speech therapy services or Regional Center services. The rate of referral at any of the 3 visits was 8.6% at in-person visits and 10.9% at virtual visits (p = 0.49). Infants whose first visit was virtual were just as likely to complete all 3 developmental assessments as those whose first visit was in person.

DISCUSSION

The COVID-19 pandemic stay-at-home orders provided a "natural experiment" demonstrating the effectiveness of virtual visits as compared to in-person visits. Although the developmental assessment tool used was not standardized to be used virtually, virtual visits were just as likely to result in referrals to services and did not lead to loss of follow-up.

CONCLUSION

Virtual visits may be useful and convenient for some families, but further study is required.

Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors alleviate cognitive dysfunction in type 2 diabetes mellitus

BACKGROUND

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are commonly at high risk for developing cognitive dysfunction. Antidiabetic agents might be repurposed for targeting cognitive dysfunction in addition to modulation on glucose homeostasis. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) on cognitive function in T2DM.

METHODS

PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were systematically searched from inception to September 30, 2023. Weighted mean differences were calculated using the Mantel-Haenszel (M-H) fixed or random effects model based on the degree of heterogeneity among studies. Heterogeneity was evaluated using a Chi-squared test and quantified with Higgins I2. Sensitivity analysis was performed with the leave-one-out method, and publication bias was evaluated according to Begg's and Egger's tests.

RESULTS

Six clinical trials involving 5,178 participants were included in the pooled analysis. Administration of DPP-4i generally correlated with an increase of Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores (1.09, 95% CI: 0.22 to 1.96). DPP-4i alleviated cognitive impairment in the copying skill subdomain of MMSE (0.26, 95% CI: 0.12 to 0.40). Treatment with DPP-4i also resulted in an increase of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) scores (0.82, 95% CI: 0.30 to 1.34). However, DPP-4i produced no significant effects on Barthel Activities of Daily Living (BADL) scores (0.37, 95% CI: -1.26 to 1.99) or other test scores.

CONCLUSIONS

DPP-4i treatment favourably improved cognitive function in patients with T2DM. Further trials with larger samples should be performed to confirm these estimates and investigate the association of different DPP-4i with cognitive function among diabetic patients.

Pt-Clusters-Equipped Antioxidase-Like Biocatalysts as Efficient ROS Scavengers for Treating Periodontitis

Developing high-efficiency artificial biocatalysts for scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) is critical for treating inflammation diseases and promoting tissue regeneration. By mimicking the active sites in catalase, here, a Pt-clusters-equipped antioxidase-like biocatalysts (Pt─CN) with superior catalytic abilities for stem cell protection and periodontitis treatment are reported. Owing to the excellent effects of multiple Pt clusters, Pt─CN yields exceptional catalytic ROS-scavenging activities for multiple types of ROS. In vitro studies show that Pt─CN can effectively protect stem cell survival, adhesion, and differentiation in a high ROS levels microenvironment. Additionally, Pt─CN can reduce the M1/M2 ratio of macrophages when stimulated by lipopolysaccharide. In vivo treatment of mouse periodontitis further confirms the protection against bone loss and reduction in the inflammatory response. This study provides a basis for the application of biocatalysts with Pt catalytic center in macrophage polarization, stem cell protection, and periodontitis treatment, thus offering a new strategy for the design of high-performance artificial biocatalysts.

GID complex regulates the differentiation of neural stem cells by destabilizing TET2

Brain development requires a delicate balance between self-renewal and differentiation in neural stem cells (NSC), which rely on the precise regulation of gene expression. Ten-eleven translocation 2 (TET2) modulates gene expression by the hydroxymethylation of 5-methylcytosine in DNA as an important epigenetic factor and participates in the neuronal differentiation. Yet, the regulation of TET2 in the process of neuronal differentiation remains unknown. Here, the protein level of TET2 was reduced by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway during NSC differentiation, in contrast to mRNA level. We identified that TET2 physically interacts with the core subunits of the glucose-induced degradation-deficient (GID) ubiquitin ligase complex, an evolutionarily conserved ubiquitin ligase complex and is ubiquitinated by itself. The protein levels of GID complex subunits increased reciprocally with TET2 level upon NSC differentiation. The silencing of the core subunits of the GID complex, including WDR26 and ARMC8, attenuated the ubiquitination and degradation of TET2, increased the global 5-hydroxymethylcytosine levels, and promoted the differentiation of the NSC. TET2 level increased in the brain of the Wdr26+/- mice. Our results illustrated that the GID complex negatively regulates TET2 protein stability, further modulates NSC differentiation, and represents a novel regulatory mechanism involved in brain development.

Strolling in Room-Scale VR: Hex-Core-MK1 Omnidirectional Treadmill

The natural locomotion interface is critical to the development of many VR applications. For household VR applications, there are two basic requirements: natural immersive experience and minimized space occupation. The existing locomotion strategies generally do not simultaneously satisfy these two requirements well. This article presents a novel omnidirectional treadmill (ODT) system named Hex-Core-MK1 (HCMK1). By implementing two kinds of mirror-symmetrical spiral rollers to generate the omnidirectional velocity field, this proposed system is capable of providing real walking experiences with a full-degree of freedom in an area as small as 1.76 m 2, while delivering great advantages over several existing ODT systems in terms of weight, volume, latency and dynamic performance. Compared with the sizes of Infinadeck and HCP, the two best motor-driven ODTs so far, the 8 cm height of HCMK1 is only 20% of Infinadeck and 50% of HCP. In addition, HCMK1 is a lightweight device weighing only 110 kg, which provides possibilities for further expanding VR scenarios, such as terrain simulation. The system latency of HCMK1 is only 9ms. The experiments show that HCMK1 can deliver a starting acceleration of 16.00 m/s 2 and a braking acceleration of 30.00 m/s 2.

Quantitative flood disaster loss-resilience with the multilevel hybrid evaluation model

The severity of global flood disasters is growing, causing loss of human life and property. Building a high-resilience social system, an important means of sustainable flood control, can address these flood-related issues. Numerous studies have carried out disaster resilience evaluations and explored the correlation between flood disaster loss and intensity, but neglected to analyze the role of resilience construction in disaster loss reduction. This study proposed a research route for linking flood loss and disaster loss to quantify the relationship between the two. Take Guangdong Province, China as a study case, the mixed-effects (ME) model and multilevel hybrid evaluation model (MHEM) were established to assess disaster loss and resilience of cities, respectively. Subsequently, disaster resilience curves were built to quantitatively evaluate disaster resilience and corresponding disaster loss. The results show that (1) the ME model can concurrently build the disaster intensity-loss curves of multiple cities with high fitting accuracy. The MHEM combines multiple methods to determine the evaluation result with the highest consistency, showing high reliability. (2) The central and southern regions of Guangdong Province have low disaster loss and high resilience, while the northern regions have high disaster loss and low resilience. (3) With the improvement of disaster resistance, the reduction in disaster loss gradually decreases. Disaster loss in low-resilience cities exhibits greater randomness than that in high-resilience cities, and increasing their resilience can more significantly reduce their level of loss. This study provides a quantitative basis and available methods for comprehensive responses to natural disasters and adaptation to global climate change.

Preventive Treatment with PD-1 Antibody Increases Tissue-resident Memory T Cells Infiltration and Delays Esophageal Carcinogenesis

Numerous studies and clinical trials have shown that immune checkpoint inhibitors can effectively prevent tumor growth and metastasis in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the anti-tumor effects of PD-1 antibody preventive treatment in patients with early stages ESCC as well as patients with high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HGIN). We first established an ESCC model using C57BL/6J mice treated with the chemical carcinogen 4- NQO and observed esophageal lesions at different time points. Second, we compared the antitumor efficacy of PD-1 antibody treatment in mice at the ESCC stage and PD-1 antibody preventive treatment in mice at the HGIN stage. The results showed that PD-1 antibody preventive treatment effectively impeded the progression of 4NQO-induced esophageal tumorigenesis. IHC analysis was performed to observe the infiltration of immune cells into the tumor microenvironment. It has been shown that active tissue-resident memory T cells can be induced and resided into the tumor microenvironment for a long period after treatment with PD-1 antibody. Reexposure to the oncogenic environment colonized by CD8+TRM cells can still exert antitumor effects. These results provide new strategies for the treatment of patients with early stage ESCC and HGIN.

PREVENTION RELEVANCE

Immune checkpoint inhibitors have shown promising results in multiple tumor species. However, there is currently no clinical application to evaluate their therapeutic value in cancer preventive treatment. Prophylactic use of immune checkpoint inhibitors in the early stages of ESCC may provide long-term benefits to patients.

Enhanced Dynamic Impact Resistance of 3D-Printed Continuous Optical Fiber-Reinforced Helicoidal Polylactic Acid Composites

Characterized by light weight and high strength, composites are widely used as protective materials in dynamic impact loading under extreme conditions, such as high strain rates. Therefore, based on the excellent tensile properties of continuous fiber and the good flexibility and toughness of the bionic spiral structure, this study uses a multi-material 3D printer to incorporate continuous fiber, and then modifies the G-CODE file to control the printing path to achieve the production of a continuous fiber-reinforced Polylactic Acid composite helicoidal (spiral angle 60°) structure (COF-HP). Dynamic behavior under high-strain-rate impact experiments have been conducted using the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). Stress-strain curves, impact energy curves and high-speed camera photographs with different strain rates at 680 s-1 and 890 s-1 have been analyzed to explore the dynamic process and illustrate the damage evolution. In addition, some detailed simulation models considering the incorporation of continuous optical fiber (COF) and different strain rates have been established and verified for deeper investigations. The results show that the COF does enhance the impact resistance of the laminates. When the porosity is reduced, the maximum stress of the continuous fiber-reinforced composite material is 4~7% higher than that of the pure PLA material. Our findings here expand the application of COF and provide a new method for designing protective materials, which have broad application prospects in the aerospace and automotive industries.

Multifunctional Tumor-Targeting Carbon Dots for Tumor Microenvironment Activated Ferroptosis and Immunotherapy in Cancer Treatment

As an emerging cancer treatment strategy, ferroptosis is distinguished by the perturbation of lipid metabolism equilibrium and the accumulation of lipid peroxidation. However, the efficacy is consistently hindered by excessive GSH in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Here, this work designed and prepared multifunctional tumor-targeting carbon dots (FG-CDs@Cu) for ferroptosis and immunotherapy. Cu2+ in FG-CDs@Cu rapidly depletes high concentrations of GSH and inhibits glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) expression in an acidic TME. Meanwhile, the generated Cu+ produced reactive oxygen species (ROS) through Fenton-like reaction. Due to the high efficiency of ROS production and GSH depletion, ferroptosis mediated by oxidative stress is significantly enhanced by FG-CDs@Cu in vivo, which can induce immunogenic cell death and promote CD8+ T cell infiltration. Meanwhile, the generated O2 effectively improves the hypoxic environment of the cells and leads to the reduction of hypoxia factor-1α (HIF-1α) expression, which activates the transformation of tumor-promoting M2-type tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) to tumor-inhibiting M1-type TAMs, further enhancing the immune response and ferroptosis. The in vivo tests suggested that FG-CDs@Cu could efficiently suppress tumor growth in the mouse model and did not cause obvious toxicity. The combination with antiprogrammed death-ligand 1 (αPD-L1) synergy immune therapy could effectively restrain the growth of distal tumors, suggesting the significant potential of FG-CDs@Cu in augmenting ferroptosis and immunotherapy for efficacious cancer treatment.
