Abstract
This study discusses an evacuated tube collector-type solar water heater (ETCSWH) using a phase change material (PCM) chamber with fins, nanofluid, and nano-enhanced phase change material (NEPCM). First, the charging phenomena in a horizontal triplex tube heat exchanger (TTHX) equipped with fins, natural convection, and an ETCSWH system without PCM is simulated to validate the solution. The impact of adding fins and nanoparticles with a volume fraction of 3% of Al2O3 and Cu to paraffin wax and water-based fluid, respectively, on the unit's efficiency has been examined. The proposed system for the PCM melting process, heat storage, fluid flow behavior in the system, and velocity distribution and temperature contour in the storage tank and three parts of the absorber tube have been evaluated using ANSYS FLUENT software in a three-dimensional and transient simulation. The results show that Case 8 has improved by 39.7% compared to Case 1 and Case 4 by 5.2% compared to Case 1 within 4 h of the melting process. Also, Case 8 with a 43% and 6.4% shorter melting time than Cases 1 and 5 has the best performance and the greatest heat transfer rate. The productivity of the ETCSWH system is considerably enhanced by the use of fins, NEPCM, and nanofluid.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Survival is a key metric of the effectiveness of a health system in managing cancer. We set out to provide a comprehensive examination of worldwide variation and trends in survival from brain tumors in adults, by histology. METHODS We analyzed individual data for adults (15-99 years) diagnosed with a brain tumor (ICD-O-3 topography code C71) during 2000-2014, regardless of tumor behavior. Data underwent a 3-phase quality control as part of CONCORD-3. We estimated net survival for 11 histology groups, using the unbiased nonparametric Pohar Perme estimator. RESULTS The study included 556,237 adults. In 2010-2014, the global range in age-standardized 5-year net survival for the most common sub-types was broad: in the range 20%-38% for diffuse and anaplastic astrocytoma, from 4% to 17% for glioblastoma, and between 32% and 69% for oligodendroglioma. For patients with glioblastoma, the largest gains in survival occurred between 2000-2004 and 2005-2009. These improvements were more noticeable among adults diagnosed aged 40-70 years than among younger adults. CONCLUSIONS To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the largest account to date of global trends in population-based survival for brain tumors by histology in adults. We have highlighted remarkable gains in 5-year survival from glioblastoma since 2005, providing large-scale empirical evidence on the uptake of chemoradiation at population level. Worldwide, survival improvements have been extensive, but some countries still lag behind. Our findings may help clinicians involved in national and international tumor pathway boards to promote initiatives aimed at more extensive implementation of clinical guidelines.

Abstract
A green and resilient (G-Resilient) supply chain network is designed for perishable products under disruption risks and epistemic uncertainties. This study aims to minimize effects of the disruption by presenting new strategies, such as multiple sourcing, financial suppliers, horizontal collaboration, route risk, and coverage radius, in designing a new multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming model for multi-product, multi-period, multi-modal G-Resilient supply chain. Then, a novel robust possibilistic programming (RPP) approach is presented using credibility measure and membership functions of generalized interval-valued type-2 fuzzy variables to face the epistemic uncertainties, such as supply capacity of facilities, customer demand, transportation cost, and CO2 emission factor, in the proposed mathematical model. An improved version of augmented ε-constraint method (AUGMECON2) is also employed to produce separate Pareto-optimal solutions. Moreover, the study compares the proposed RPP with possibilistic chance-constrained programming model and illustrates its advantages; in the standard deviation of CO2 emission objective function, its performance has improved by about 44.91%. Finally, the model's performance has been verified by a real case study in the food industry, and managerial implications have been provided.

Abstract
Streptococcus Iniae infection is recognized as a disease with substantial economic losses, infecting a wide range of fish species. The limitations of current vaccines and strategies have led to the identification of new methods to control this disease. Multi-epitope vaccines which employ various immunogenic proteins can be promising. The current research project aimed to design an efficient multi-epitope vaccine against Streptococcus Iniae infection in fish. To this end, six immunogenic proteins of Streptococcus Iniae, including FBA, ENO, Sip11, GAPDH, MtsB, and SCPI proteins, were applied for epitope prediction. The best B cell, T cell, and IFNγ epitopes of the immunogenic proteins, as well as interleukin-8, were used to construct a multi-epitope vaccine. Thereafter, different parameters of the designed vaccine, including physicochemical features, antigenicity, secondary structure, and tertiary structure, were evaluated. Moreover, the interaction of the interleukin-8 domain of the designed vaccine and its receptor was investigated by molecular docking strategy. Finally, nucleotide sequence of the vaccine was adapted to express in Escherichia coli. The results of the present study pointed out that the designed vaccine was a stable vaccine with molecular weight and antigenicity score of 45 kDa and 0.936, respectively. Furthermore, the structure analysis results revealed that the designed vaccine contained 23.49% alpha helix, with 90.5% residues in favored region. Finally, it was demonstrated that the interleukin-8 domain of the designed vaccine could be successfully docked to its receptor with the lowest energy of -1020.9. Based on the obtained results, it seems that the designed vaccine can be an efficient candidate to prevent Streptococcus Iniae infection in fish.

Abstract
In the present study, novel styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) membranes were prepared by the addition of graphene (Gr) nanosheets to the casting solution and were utilized in the pervaporative separation of a dilute solution of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (1,2,4-TMB) as a volatile organic compound (VOC) in water. Several characterizations such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical tensile test, and determination of water contact angle and swelling degree were conducted to investigate the properties of the prepared membranes. The results showed that with the addition of Gr the membrane thermal stability and hydrophobicity were increased while there was an optimum Gr loading to achieve the highest elastic modulus and tensile strength. Moreover, it was found that by increasing the Gr concentration up to 0.5 wt. %, the separation factor and pervaporation separation index (PSI) were increased by 250% and 43% compared to pure SBS membrane and reached 930 and 545 kg/m2h, respectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Given the contradictory results of previous randomized controlled trials (RCTs), we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify and summarize the effects of folic acid supplementation on C-reactive protein (CRP). METHODS AND RESULTS We performed a systematic search of all available RCTs conducted up to October 2018 in the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane. RCTs that investigated the effect of folate on CRP were included in the present study. Data were combined with the use of generic inverse-variance random-effects models. Statistical heterogeneity between studies was evaluated using Cochran's Q-test. Ten RCTs (1179 subjects) were included in the present meta-analysis. Pooled analysis results showed that folate supplementation significantly lowered the serum CRP level (weighted mean difference (WMD): -0.685 mg/l, 95% CI: -1.053, -0.318, p < 0.001). However, heterogeneity was significant (I2 = 96.7%, p = 0.000). Stratified analyses indicated that sex, intervention period, and type of study population were sources of heterogeneity. Following analysis, results revealed that the greatest impact was observed in women (WMD: -0.967 mg/l, 95% CI: -1.101, -0.833, p = 0.000), patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (WMD: -1.764 mg/l, 95% CI: -2.002, -1.526, p = 0.000), and intervention period less than 12 weeks (WMD: -0.742 mg/l, 95% CI: -0.834, -0.650, p = 0.000). CONCLUSION This meta-analysis suggested that folic acid supplementation could significantly lower the serum CRP level. Folic acid leads to greater CRP lowering effect in women, patients with T2DM, and those with less than 12-week intervention.

Abstract
This study aimed to summarize earlier randomized controlled trials on the effects of resveratrol supplementation on body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and fat mass (FM). We searched PubMed, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar from inception to April 2018 using relevant keywords. All clinical trials investigating the effects of resveratrol supplementation on BW, BMI, WC and FM in adults were included. Overall, 28 trials were included. Pooled effect sizes suggested a significant effect of resveratrol administration on weight (weighted mean differences [WMD]: -0.51 kg, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.94 to -0.09; I2 = 50.3%, P = 0.02), BMI (WMD: -0.17 kg m-2 , 95% CI: -0.32, -0.03; I2 = 49.6%, P = 0.02) and WC (WMD: -0.79 cm, 95% CI: -1.39, -0.2; I2 = 13.4%, P = 0.009), respectively. However, no significant effect of resveratrol supplementation on FM was found (WMD: -0.36%, 95% CI: -0.88, 0.15; I2 = 0.0%, P = 0.16). Findings from subgroup analysis revealed a significant reduction in BW and BMI in trials using resveratrol at the dosage of <500 mg d-1 , those with long-term interventions (≥3 month), and performed on people with obesity. Taken together, the data suggest that resveratrol supplementation has beneficial effects to reduce BW, BMI and WC, but not FM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have highlighted that narrative skill is critical to the development of the literacy skills by children. Children with cochlear implants (CI) and hearing aids (HA) may have problems in narrative development compared to peers with healthy hearing (HH). There is no exact data about the narrative writing ability of Persian-speaking students who are hearing-impaired. This study was undertaken to compare the microstructure and macrostructure scores for narrative writing of Persian-speaking students who are hearing-impaired and peers with HH. DESIGN This was a cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study. SETTING The subjects were recruited from elementary schools in the city of Tehran. PARTICIPANTS A total of 144 elementary school students were participated. OUTCOME MEASURES The written narratives were elicited using a wordless pictorial storybook story. Three-way ANOVA with post hoc adjusted Bonferroni test was applied to determine the main effects and interactions of grounded variables on the microstructure and macrostructure components of narrative writing. RESULTS No significant differences were observed in the macrostructure components of narrative writing between hearing-impaired and HH students. Factors analysis showed that the 4th grade HH students had significantly the highest scores, and the 3rd grade HA students had significantly the lowest scores in microstructure components of narrative writing. CONCLUSION The findings revealed that hearing-impaired students similarly to their HH peers can transmit the main idea (macrostructure) of narrative writing, but show critical difficulties when using complete grammatical elements (microstructures) to form sentences to convey the idea in the narrative.

Abstract
Glioblastoma (GBM) is known as a tumor type, which arises from astrocytes. Several studies indicated that GBM tumor cells are malignant. This is because of the fact that they consist of different cell types, which are reproducing very quickly and are also supported by a large network of blood vessels. The correct identification of various stages of GBM could help to better treat the patients with this disease. Therefore, new biomarkers such as exosomes and microRNAs (miRNAs) may help us to learn more about GBM and they may also lead to a more effective treatment for patients with GBM. Exosomes have emerged as biological vehicles, which can perform various tasks in carcinogenesis pathways such as PI3K/AKT, SOX2, PTEN, ERK, and STAT3. The miRNAs are known as small noncoding RNAs that are involved in several GBM pathogenic events. These molecules have key roles in various biological processes such as angiogenesis, metastasis and tumor growth. In this study, we highlighted various exosomes and miRNAs that could be used for diagnosis and/or prognosis biomarkers in patients with GBM.

Abstract
Bioleaching of Au from mobile phone printed circuit boards (MPPCBs) was studied, using Bacillus megaterium which is a cyanogenic bacterium. To maximize Au extraction, initial pH, pulp density, and glycine concentration were optimized via response surface methodology (RSM). Bioleaching of Cu, an important inhibitor on Au recovery, was also examined. To maximize Au recovery, the optimal condition suggested by the models was initial pH of 10, pulp density of 8.13g/l, and glycine concentration of 10g/l. Under the optimal condition, approximately 72% of Cu and 65g Au/ton MPPCBs, which is 7 times greater than the recovery from gold mines, was extracted. Cu elimination from the MPPCBs having a rich content of Au did not cause a significant effect on Au recovery. It was found that when the ratio of Cu to Au is high, Cu elimination can considerably improve Au recovery. B. megaterium could extract the total Au from PCBs containing 130g Au/ton MPPCBs.

Abstract
Annual worldwide growth rate of red mud (RM) as a hazardous waste has caused serious environmental problems for its disposal in the mining and metallurgy industries. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to investigate biological leaching of RM and recovery of metals using organic acids exerted by Aspergillus niger. Experiments using A. niger were conducted in batch cultures with a pulp density of 2% (w/v) RM under one-step, two-step and spent-medium bioleaching. Based on HPLC results, the major lixiviant was the secretion of organic acids (citric, gluconic, oxalic and malic) by A. niger. Leaching efficiency of metals in the one-step process was the highest and the amounts of leached metals were 69.8%, 60% and 25.4% for Al, Ti and Fe, respectively. The fungal leaching technique demonstrated an adequate recovery of metals, with an efficient and cost-effective means and respect to a reuse of RM for economic and environmental purposes.

Abstract
Spent-medium bioleaching of V and Ni from a power plant residual ash (PPR ash) was conducted using organic acids produced by Aspergillus niger. The production of organic acids in a bubble column bioreactor was optimized through selecting three most influencing factors. Under optimum condition of aeration rate of 762.5(ml/min), sucrose concentration of 101.9(g/l) and inoculum size of 40(ml/l), respectively 17,185, 4539, 1042 and 502(ppm) of oxalic, gluconic, citric and malic acids were produced. Leaching experiments were carried out using biogenic produced organic acids under leaching environment temperature of 60°C and rotary shaking speed of 135rpm, with various pulp densities of 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9(%w/v). The results showed that biogenic produced organic acids leached V much more efficiently than Ni so that even at high pulp density of 9(%w/v), 83% of V was recovered while Ni recovery yield was 30%.

Abstract
Each year a tremendous volume of V-Ni rich ashes is produced by fuel oil consuming power plants throughout the world. Recovery of precious metals existing in these ashes is very important from both economic and environmental aspects. The present research was aimed at investigating bioleaching potential of Penicillium simplicissimum for the recovery of metals from power plant residual ash (PPR ash) using different bioleaching methods such as one-step, two-step, and spent-medium bioleaching at 1% (w/v) pulp density. Furthermore, the effects of thermal pretreatment on leaching of V, Ni, and Fe, as major elements present in PPR ash, were studied. Thermal pretreatment at various temperatures removed the carbonaceous and volatile fraction of the ash and affected the fungal growth and metal leachability. The highest extraction yields of V and Ni were achieved for the original PPR ash, using spent-medium bioleaching in which nearly 100% of V and 40% of Ni were extracted. The maximum extraction yield of Fe (48.3%) was obtained for the pretreated PPR ash at 400°C by spent-medium bioleaching. In addition, the fungal growth in pure culture was investigated through measurement of produced organic acids via high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Chemical leaching experiments were performed, using commercial organic acids at the same concentrations as those produced under optimum condition of fungal growth (5237ppm citric, 3666ppm gluconic, 1287ppm oxalic and 188ppm malic acid). It was found that in comparison to chemical leaching, bioleaching improved V and Ni recovery up to 19% and 12%, respectively. Moreover, changes in physical and chemical properties as well as morphology of the samples utilizing appropriate analytical methods such as XRF, XRD, FTIR, and FE-SEM were comprehensively investigated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metallo-beta-lactamase (MβL) enzymes production is one of the most important resistance mechanisms against carbapenems in some bacteria including Acinetobacter baumannii. AIMS This study was aimed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility and the prevalence of MβL among carbapenem-resistant isolates of A. baumannii. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study from October 2012 to April 2013, 98 isolates were identified as A. baumannii using Microgen™ kits and confirmed by molecular method. These isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibilities by disk diffusion method according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines. Carbapenem-resistant isolates were further detected phenotypically by MβL minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC)-test strips, and subsequently positive MβL isolates were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS Overall, 98% (96/98) of A. baumannii isolates were detected as carbapenem-resistant by MIC test. Highest sensitivity to the tested antibiotic with 42.9% (42/98) was observed to colistin. Of 96 carbapenem-resistant isolates, 43 were phenotypically positive for MβL; out of 43 isolates, 37 were confirmed for the presence of MβL genes by PCR. CONCLUSION The frequency of drug resistance among the clinical samples of A. baumannii isolated in our study against most of the antibiotics was very high. Moreover, all MβL producing isolates were multidrug resistance. Therefore, systematic surveillance to detect MβL producing bacteria and rational prescription and use of carbapenems could be helpful to prevent the spread of carbapenem resistance.

Abstract
This paper reports tests on a lab-scale surface aeration vessel was equipped with a Rushton turbine to examine its performance in terms of standard aeration efficiency (SAE), mixing time, and void fraction characteristics. These characteristics were investigated by tests using variations of rotor speed, impeller immersion depth, and water level. Results showed that variation of impeller immersion depth had a greater effect on the SAE compared to variation of water level. Moreover, the SAE increased with rotor speeds up to about 150 to 200 rpm and then decreased. In addition, void fraction improved by impeller immersion depth and rotor speed enhancement; however, mixing time and power number were reduced as rotor speed increased. According to the response surface methodology statistical optimizations, optimum values for rotor speed, impeller immersion depth, and water level were 168.90 rpm, 25 mm, and 30 cm, respectively, to achieve the maximum value of SAE.

Abstract
Background: The genes encoding IL9, IL9R, IL17A, and IL17F have recently been implicated in the genetic basis of rhinitis and allergy. Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the association of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of IL9, IL9R, IL17A, and IL17F and potential interaction of these genes with the determination of IgE levels in women with allergic rhinitis (AR) in Shahrekord, Iran. Subjects and Methods: In a case–control study, SNPs from the IL9, IL9R, IL17A, and IL17F were genotyped in 394 random samples including 195 AR patients and 199 normal controls. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed for the determination of serum total IgE levels. The Student's t-test was used to compare the differences. The Chi-square test was performed to compare proportions of cases with different clinical features among cases with different genotypes. The genotype and allele frequencies were obtained by direct counting. Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium was tested between cases and controls separately. The relative risk associated with rare alleles was estimated as an odds ratio with 95% confidence interval. P ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The rs731476 SNP in the IL9R was significantly associated with the AR phenotype in women. No association was found between any of the other SNPs in IL9, IL17A, and IL17F genes and AR. In the gene–gene interaction analysis, we found that IL9R/IL9 genotype rs731476 T-/rs2069885 G conferred a higher risk for AR phenotype development. We also did not find a significant association in terms of IgE levels between cases and controls. Conclusion: Our result suggests that the rs731476 SNP located in the IL9R is associated with an increased susceptibility to AR in females. In a subsequent gene–gene interaction analysis, the rs731476 T-/rs2069885 G-genotype combination (IL9R/IL9) has significantly been associated with the development of the AR phenotype.

Abstract
Current optical reflectometric techniques used to characterize optical fibers have to trade-off longitudinal range with spatial resolution and therefore struggle to provide simultaneously wide dynamic range (>20dB) and high resolution (<10cm). In this work, we develop and present a technique we refer to as Optical Side Scattering Radiometry (OSSR) capable of resolving discrete and distributed scattering properties of fibers along their length with up to 60dB dynamic range and 5cm spatial resolution. Our setup is first validated on a standard single mode telecoms fiber. Then we apply it to a record-length 11km hollow core photonic band-gap fiber (HC-PBGF) the characterization requirements of which lie far beyond the capability of standard optical reflectometric instruments. We next demonstrate use of the technique to investigate and explain the unusually high loss observed in another HC-PBGF and finally demonstrate its flexibility by measuring a HC-PBGF operating at a wavelength of 2µm. In all of these examples, good agreement between the OSSR measurements and other well-established (but more limited) characterization methods, i.e. cutback loss and OTDR, was obtained.

Abstract
In this research simultaneous gold and copper recovery from computer printed circuit boards (CPCBs) was evaluated using central composite design of response surface methodology (CCD-RSM). To maximize simultaneous metals' extraction from CPCB waste four factors which affected bioleaching were selected to be optimized. A pure culture of Bacillus megaterium, a cyanogenic bacterium, was used to produce cyanide as a leaching agent. Initial pH 10, pulp density 2g/l, particle mesh#100 and glycine concentration 0.5g/l were obtained as optimal conditions. Gold and copper were extracted simultaneously at about 36.81 and 13.26% under optimum conditions, respectively. To decrease the copper effect as an interference agent in the leaching solution, a pretreatment strategy was examined. For this purpose firstly using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans copper in the CPCB powder was totally extracted, then the residual sediment was subjected to further experiments for gold recovery by B. megaterium. Using pretreated sample under optimal conditions 63.8% gold was extracted.

Abstract
Introduction:this study aimed to compare the effectiveness of mindfulness and emotion regulation training in the reduction of marital conflicts. Methodology:the present evaluation was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design and a control group. The population consisted of all clients who referred to Moein Counseling Center in Alborz province (Spring 2014) due to marital problems. Using the simple random sampling method, 45 married people were selected as the sample and divided into two experimental groups (15 participants in each) and a control group (15 participants). Mindfulness training sessions were held for the first experimental group and emotion regulation training sessions were held for the second experimental group while, the participants in the control group did not receive any training. The Marital Conflicts Questionnaire was used for data collection and the obtained data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and analysis of covariance. Results: the results confirmed the main hypothesis of this study regarding the effectiveness of mindfulness and emotion regulation training in reduction of marital conflicts (p<0.001, F=43.41). Discussion and conclusion: there was a significant difference between mindfulness training and emotion regulation training in the reduction of marital conflicts; thus, compared to the mindfulness training, emotion regulation training can be considered a more effective treatment of marital conflicts.

Abstract
Computer printed circuit boards (CPCBs) have a rich metal content and are produced in high volume, making them an important component of electronic waste. The present study used a pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans to leach Cu and Ni from CPCBs waste. The adaptation phase began at 1g/l CPCBs powder with 10% inoculation and final pulp density was reached at 20g/l after about 80d. Four effective factors including initial pH, particle size, pulp density, and initial Fe(3+) concentration were optimized to achieve maximum simultaneous recovery of Cu and Ni. Their interactions were also identified using central composite design in response surface methodology. The suggested optimal conditions were initial pH 3, initial Fe(3+) 8.4g/l, pulp density 20g/l and particle size 95μm. Nearly 100% of Cu and Ni were simultaneously recovered under optimum conditions. Finally, bacterial growth characteristics versus time at optimum conditions were plotted.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the potential of Bacillus megaterium as a cyanogenic bacterium to produce cyanide for solubilization of platinum and rhenium from a spent refinery catalyst. Response surface methodology was applied to study the effects and interaction between two main effective parameters including initial glycine concentration and pulp density. Maximum Pt and Re recovery was obtained 15.7% and 98%, respectively, under optimum conditions of 12.8 g/l initial glycine concentration and 4% (w/v) pulp density after 7 days. Increasing the free cyanide concentration to 3.6 mg/l, varying the pH from 6.7 to 9, and increasing the dissolved oxygen from 2 to 5mg/l demonstrated the growth characteristics of B. megaterium during bioleaching process. The modified shrinking core model was used to determine the rate limiting step of the process. It was found that diffusion through the product layer is the rate controlling step.

Abstract
Specialty optical fibers, in particular microstructured and multi-material optical fibers, have complex geometry in terms of structure and/or material composition. Their fabrication, although rapidly developing, is still at a very early stage of development compared with conventional optical fibers. Structural characterization of these fibers during every step of their multi-stage fabrication process is paramount to optimize the fiber-drawing process. The complexity of these fibers restricts the use of conventional refractometry and microscopy techniques to determine their structural and material composition. Here we present, to the best of our knowledge, the first nondestructive structural and material investigation of specialty optical fibers using X-ray computed tomography (CT) methods, not achievable using other techniques. Recent advances in X-ray CT techniques allow the examination of optical fibers and their preforms with sub-micron resolution while preserving the specimen for onward processing and use. In this work, we study some of the most challenging specialty optical fibers and their preforms. We analyze a hollow core photonic band gap fiber and its preforms, and bond quality at the joint between two fusion-spliced hollow core fibers. Additionally, we studied a multi-element optical fiber and a metal incorporated dual suspended-core optical fiber. The application of X-ray CT can be extended to almost all optical fiber types, preforms and devices.

Abstract
This study investigated a novel pretreatment method, as an essential step, for production of second generation bioethanol from sugarcane bagasse (SCB). Effect of tween 80 (TW) and polyethylene glycol 4000 (PEG) on SCB pretreatment was assessed using 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) as an ionic liquid (IL). Different concentrations of TW and PEG were used to determine the optimum concentration of surfactant for the highest percentage of cellulose conversion. TW and PEG increased lignin removal by 12.5% over the IL-only pretreated sample. The 3% (w/w) PEG showed a significant increase in enzymatic digestibility with an efficiency of 96.2% after 12h of hydrolysis; this was 23% higher than the efficiency of SCB pretreated with IL. The increase in digestibility of surfactant assisted IL pretreatment method can be attributed to the decrease in cellulose crystallinity, changes in the cellulose lattice, and delignification; which was confirmed by FT-IR, XRD and FE-SEM analysis.

Abstract
This study determined the optimal conditions required to attain maximum metal recovery in the bioleaching process of dewatered metal-plating sludge using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans). Adaptation of this strain was carried up to 1% (w/v) of the sample. Three factors including initial pH, initial Fe(3+) concentration and pulp density were selected as the effective factors and were optimized using a central composite design of response surface methodology. An initial pH of 1, pulp density of 9 g/l and initial Fe(3+) concentration of 1g/l were determined to be optimum values by the statistical models. The highest extractions for Cr and Ni under optimal conditions were 55.6% and 58.2%, respectively. Bioleaching kinetics was investigated using a modified shrinking core model to better understand the mechanism of the leaching reaction. The model predictions indicate that the diffusion step controlled the overall dissolution kinetics and is the rate controlling step.

Modeling and simulation of noise pollution has been done in a large city, where the population is over 2 millions. Two models of artificial neural network and regression were developed to predict in-city road traffic noise pollution with using the data of noise measurements and vehicle counts at three points of the city for a period of 12 hours. The MATLAB and DATAFIT softwares were used for simulation. The predicted results of noise level were compared with the measured noise levels in three stations. The values of normalized bias, sum of squared errors, mean of squared errors, root mean of squared errors, and squared correlation coefficient calculated for each model show the results of two models are suitable, and the predictions of artificial neural network are closer to the experimental data.

Abstract
Water in oil emulsions are prepared by using an ultra-sonication device and used in an emulsion liquid membrane process in order to recover arsenic (V) ions from an aqueous medium. The aim of this work is the investigation of the effect of emulsifier concentration and composition, and also sonication time on the emulsion droplet size and the extraction efficiency in order to obtain stable emulsions with small droplets that favor the extraction. Results show that ultrasonic waves reduce internal droplet size which enhances the extraction of arsenic. In addition, internal droplet size is decreased initially and then increased by increasing Span 80 concentration. On the other hand, by increasing Span 80 concentration, extraction amount is increased and then decreased. Furthermore, emulsifier blends provide more stability for the emulsion. Increasing concentration of Tween 20 as a hydrophilic emulsifier up to an optimum concentration decreases internal droplet size and increases extraction amount. By increasing sonication time up to 4 min, the internal droplet size is decreased and the extraction amount is increased. If sonication time is increased further, the internal droplet size is increased and the extraction amount is decreased.

Abstract
Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are key intermediates in anaerobic digestion. Enriched acetogenic and methanogenic cultures were used for the syntrophic anaerobic digestion of VFAs in a continuous fixed-bed reactor at mesophilic conditions. The interactive effects of propionic (HPr), butyric (HBu), and acetic (HAc) acids were analyzed. Furthermore, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and methanogen-to-acetogen ratios (M/As) were investigated as the key microbiological and operating variables of VFA anaerobic degradations. Experiments were carried out based on central composite design (CCD) and results were analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM). Effluent concentrations of HPr, HBu, HAc, and biogas production rate (BPR) were directly measured as responses. The optimum conditions were found to be HPr = 1122.9 mg/L, HBu = 1792.4 mg/L, HAc = 1735.4 mg/L, HRT = 21 hours, and M/A = 2.4 (corresponding to the maximum VFA removal and BPR). The results of verification experiments and predicted values from fitted correlations were in close agreement at a 95% confidence interval.

Abstract
Peroxidase from soybean seed coats catalyzes the oxidation and polymerization of aromatic compounds in the presence of H(2)O(2). The present study investigated the optimization of the phenol removal from wastewaters by direct using of soybean seed coats that can be extended to large scale, as a cost-effective option in comparison to pure enzyme. A central composite design was used to evaluate the effect of the following factors on the phenol removal: H(2)O(2) concentration (1-40 mmol/L), polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentration (0-1 g/L) and the amount of soybean seed coats (10-60 g/L). The results showed that PEG concentration had no significant effect on phenol conversion. Additionally, by increasing the amount of soybean seed coats, the extent of phenol conversion was increased and a higher concentration of H(2)O(2) was required to reach the maximum phenol conversion. Under optimum conditions for 1 mmol/L initial phenol, 50 g/L soybean seed coats, 14 mmol/L H(2)O(2) and 0.8 g/L PEG, the phenol conversion after 30 min was 78%. After 2 h, the catalyzed process was capable of achieving 90-92% removal of the total phenol from synthetic wastewater. A cubic model was also developed that was verified by predicting some independent experimental results.

Abstract
An upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) bioreactor was successfully used for the treatment of petroleum refinery effluent. Before optimization, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was 81% at a constant organic loading rate (OLR) of 0.4 kg/m(3) d and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 48 h. The rate of biogas production was 559 mL/h at an HRT of 40 h and an influent COD of 1000 mg/L. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to predict the behaviors of influent COD, upflow velocity (V(up)) and HRT in the bioreactor. RSM showed that the best models for COD removal and biogas production rate were the reduced quadratic and cubic models, respectively. The optimum region, identified based on two critical responses, was an influent COD of 630 mg/L, a V(up) of 0.27 m/h, and an HRT of 21.4 h. This resulted in a 76.3% COD removal efficiency and a 0.25 L biogas/L feed d biogas production rate.

Abstract
Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are key intermediates in anaerobic digestion. Enriched acetogenic and methanogenic cultures were used for syntrophic anaerobic digestion of VFAs in a high-load continuous reactor fed with acetic (HAc), propionic (HPr) and butyric (HBu) acids at maximum concentrations of 5, 3 and 4 g/L, respectively. Interactive effects of HPr, HBu and HAc were analyzed. Furthermore, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and methanogen to acetogen population ratio (M/A) were investigated as key microbiological and operating variables of VFA anaerobic degradations. Optimum conditions were found to be HPr=1125.0mg/L, HBu=1833.4 mg/L, HAc=1727.4 mg/L, HRT=21 h and M/A=2.5 (corresponding to maximum VFA removal and biogas production rate (BPR)). Results of verification experiments and predicted values from fitted correlations were in close agreement at 95% confidence interval. HRT and M/A had positive effects on VFA removal and BPR. M/A was the most important factor that affected BPR. All VFAs inhibited VFA removals.

Abstract
Adaptation of Penicillium simplicissimum with different heavy metals present in a spent hydrocracking catalyst, as well as one-step, two-step, and spent medium bioleaching of the spent catalyst by the adapted fungus, was examined in batch cultures. Adaptation experiments with the single metal ions Ni, Mo, Fe, and W showed that the fungus could tolerate up to 1500 mg/L Ni, 8000 mg/L Mo, 3000 mg/L Fe, and 8000 mg/L W. In the presence of multi-metals, the fungus was able to tolerate up to 300 mg/L Ni, 200 mg/L Mo, 150 mg/L Fe and 2500 mg/L W. A total of 3% (w/v) spent catalyst generally gave the maximum extraction yields in the two-step bioleaching process (100% of W, 100% of Fe, 92.7% of Mo, 66.43% of Ni, and 25% of Al). The main lixiviant in the bioleaching was shown to be gluconic acid. The red pigment produced by the fungus could also possibly act as an agent in Al leaching.

Abstract
Pomegranate juice was diluted to 12° Brix and carriers (maltodextrin, gum Arabic, waxy starch) were added with varying concentrations of cellulose before being reduced to powder by spray drying. All carrier concentrations improved dryer yield, with gum Arabic being the most effective. The bulk density of the powder decreased when higher carrier concentrations were used. As cellulose concentration increased in solution, the solubility of the final product decreased. The optical properties of the powder were affected by the type and concentration of the carrier; powders produced with gum Arabic showed the greatest color change. Adding a carrier increased the Tg of the powder and its storage stability. Variation in the anthocyanin may be related to the type of carrier agent and its behavior during spray drying.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coding of histology of nervous system (NS) tumors with various degrees of malignancies differs between cancer registries, whereby the comparison of incidence rates from one registry to another seems difficult. No study has systematically defined whether the change in the risk of NS tumors upon immigration in adulthood varies by subsite or histology. Therefore, we aimed to address this issue amongst the first-generation immigrants to Sweden based on a large uniform cancer registry data (1958-2006). METHODS The nationwide Swedish Family-Cancer Database (2008 version; >11.8 million individuals; 1.8 million immigrants; histology code in force since 1958) was used to calculate standardized incidence ratios (SIRs). We analyzed 28,981 adult cases of NS tumors amongst Swedes and 2519 amongst immigrants (age ≥ 30). RESULTS Significantly decreased risks for brain glioma were amongst German (SIR = 0.64), Eastern European (0.62), some Asian (0.71), Chilean (0.34), and African immigrants (0.52). We found an increased risk for brain meningioma amongst Finns (1.15) and former Yugoslavians (1.33), whilst only Norwegians (0.71) and Latin Americans (0.21) had a decreased risk. The risk for spinal ependymoma and astrocytoma was increased in Germans (3.66) and former Yugoslavians (8.89). We found no significant difference for peripheral nerve tumors between immigrants and the native Swedes. CONCLUSION Significant differences between risk of NS tumors amongst immigrants and the native Swedes may suggest different risk factor profiles for glioma compared to meningioma indicating a higher etiological role of genetic background or childhood environmental risk factors rather than exposures after immigration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer is the third main cause of death in Iran. This report was provided for explaining cancer incidence and mortality. PATIENTS AND METHODS The National Cancer Registry reports from 2003 to 2006, population-based cancer registry reports from five provinces in 2006 and National Death Registry reports from 1999 to 2004 have been applied in this report. RESULTS The age-standardized incidence rate of cancers was 98 and 110 per 100,000 among females and males. The male to female standard ratio was 1.12. The most common cancer among women and men was breast cancer (24) and stomach cancer (15), respectively. The estimated mortality rate for cancer was 41.1 and 65 per 100,000 for females and males in 2004. CONCLUSION The current low cancer incidence rates in Iran might be due to lack of national cancer screening programs for prostate, colorectal or breast cancer, a consequence of incomplete registration as well as incomplete diagnosis of cancer patients; it is expected that it will rise dramatically in the future because of anticipated increase in life expectancy and westernized lifestyle. The first priorities for health policy makers should be developing, establishing and implementing national cancer control; or else, the health system could not respond to the demands regarding to diagnosis, treatment and palliation for these patients in the future.

Abstract
This study was designed to estimate the burden of urologic diseases in the Islamic Republic of Iran as a practical method for defining public health priorities. Using World Health Organization guidelines for national burden of disease studies, 6 steps were performed: selecting diseases to include; dynamic modelling of diseases; gathering data about urologic diseases; computing the local disability weights of urologic diseases; data analysis with DisMod II; and computing the disability-adjusted life years for each disease. Renal calculus, acute cystitis, chronic prostatitis, benign prostate hyperplasia, male infertility and adult polycystic kidney disease comprised the greatest burden.

Abstract
The effect of milk coagulation temperature on the composition, microstructure monitored using scanning electron micrographs, opacity measured by a Hunter lab system, and rheological behavior measured by uniaxial compression and small amplitude oscillatory shear were studied. Three treatments of Iranian White cheese were made by applying coagulation temperatures of 34, 37, and 41.5 degrees C during the cheese-making procedure. A higher coagulation temperature resulted in increased fat and protein contents, and decreased the moisture content and ratio of moisture to protein. The highest temperature (41.5 degrees C) had a significant effect on the opacity of Iranian White cheese. Milk coagulation at this temperature decreased the whiteness index (Hunter L value) and increased the yellowness index (Hunter b value) of the aged product compared with cheeses coagulated at lower temperatures. Microstructure of the cheese coagulated at 41.5 degrees C was more compact and undisturbed, reflecting the higher values of stress at fracture and storage modulus measured for this treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Goiter is endemic in Iran. The iodine deficiency disorders program was begun a few years ago in Iran, and the coverage of iodized salt is sufficient now. But, in a periodic yearly medical examination of primary school girls in Qom, the prevalence of goiter was above 30% in 2002. This survey was designed to study the risk factors of goiter in those students. DESIGN The study was a randomized (multistage, proportional simple random sampling) case-control study. SUBJECTS AND INTERVENTIONS We selected and performed thyroid examinations in 1050 girl students in primary schools in Qom city of Iran in 2002. We found 284 cases: girls in primary schools had goiter in accordance with the clinical exam of World Health Organization classification. Among students who did not present with goiter in the clinical exam, we randomly selected 288 students as the control group. We used a questionnaire to evaluate them for the risk factors of goiter. RESULTS The mean+/-s.d. ages of cases and controls were 8.7+/-1.3 and 8.9+/-1.3 years, respectively. There is no significant difference between the two groups regarding history of soya, kale, turnip, fish, daily iodized salt usage, education and job of mothers, monthly family income, nationality, immigration and residential situation. By using multinomial logistic regression, we found that storage of iodized salt in open containers, odds ratio (OR): 2.201 (1.412-3.428); P-value <0.0001, medium socioeconomic situation (SES) of family, OR: 2.099 (1.029-4.282), P-value=0.041, district 2 of Qom city, OR: 2.880 (1.376-6.027), P-value=0.005, and district 3 of Qom city, OR: 2.051(1.032-4.078), P-value=0.041, were the major risk factors for goiter in this population. CONCLUSIONS In this study, the main risk factors for goiter were storage of iodized salt in open containers, medium SES and also living in specific districts of Qom city. As the coverage of iodinized salt is over 95% in Iran, we advise the education of the family about storage of iodized salt in closed containers. We also recommend the study of the other risk factors of goiter in the different geographical areas of Iran, because of differences in the SES and nutritional habits. Abstract
We carried out a cross-sectional study with cluster random sampling to study the status of wife abuse in Esfahan from April to July 2002. We interviewed 386 married women using a standard questionnaire. Mean age was 35.7 years (range 15-78 years). Prevalence of wife abuse was 36.8%; incidence was 29.3%. Types of abuse included inattention to wife's feelings 44.8%, threatening to prevent communicating with the wife's family 38.1%, slapping 31.9% and beating 27.2%. Husband's age, use of drugs or alcohol, smoking, income and number of children were all associated with wife abuse (P < 0.05). We recommend further investigation to detect the risk factors for wife abuse in this community along with mass education concerning sexual responsibility and conduct towards wives. We also advocate the promotion of supportive measures for abused women.
