Abstract
To explore the combination effects of plasma-activated water and dielectric barrier discharge (PAW-DBD) cold plasma treatment on the formation of volatile flavor and lipid oxidation in Asian sea bass (ASB), the volatile flavor compounds and lipid profiles were characterized by gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry and LC-MS-based lipidomics analyses. In total, 38 volatile flavor compound types were identified, and the PAW-DBD group showed the most kinds of volatile components with a significant (p < 0.05) higher content in aldehydes, ketones, and alcohols. A total of 1500 lipids was detected in lipidomics analysis, phosphatidylcholine was the most followed by triglyceride. The total saturated fatty acids content in PAW-DBD group increased by 105.02 μg/g, while the total content of unsaturated fatty acids decreased by 275.36 μg/g. It can be concluded that the PAW-DBD processing increased both the types and amounts of the volatile flavor in ASB and promoted lipid oxidation by altering lipid profiles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Combined treatment of ablation and chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma represents a promising therapy to increase treatment efficacy and improve patient survival. The "hug sign" is a recently introduced radiological sign consisting in deposition of beads/contrast agent during transarterial chemoembolization in the hyperemic area surrounding the post-ablation volume, seen during intraprocedural unenhanced cone-beam CT, that may indicate intraprocedural success. Aim of our retrospective study was to analyze the usefulness of the "hug sign" at the intraprocedural unenhanced cone-beam CT as an early predictor of response to combined treatment, based on the hug sign angle. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between January 2017 and September 2021 all patients with hepatocellular carcinoma which underwent a combined treatment of thermal ablation followed by chemoembolization were enrolled. All treated patients underwent immediate post-procedural unenhanced cone-beam CT to evaluate the deposition of contrast agent, lipiodol or radiopaque beads and to assess the percentage of coverage of the ablated area with the contrast agent (hug sign angle). Patients with missing pre-procedural, intra-procedural and/or post-procedural data/imaging, or with poor-quality post-procedural cone-beam CT images were excluded. RESULTS 128 patients (mean age, 69.3 years ± 1.1 [standard deviation]; 87 men) were evaluated. Our study evidenced that 84.4% (81/85) of patients with a hug sign angle of 360° had no residual tumor at the first 1-/3-months follow-up examination. A hug sign angle of 360° also showed to be an independent protective factor against residual tumor at multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION Unenhanced cone-beam CT performed at the end of a combined treatment with ablation plus chemoembolization can effectively predict an early treatment response on radiological images, when a hug sign angle of 360° was detected.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) are novel carbon-based nanomaterials that have been used as photosensitizer-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) in recent years due to their good photosensitizing activity. Photosensitizers (PSs) are main components of PDT that can produce large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) when stimulated by light source, which have the advantages of low drug resistance and high therapeutic efficiency. CDs can generate ROS efficiently under irradiation and therefore have been extensively studied in disease local phototherapy. In tumor therapy, CDs can be used as PSs or PS carriers to participate in PDT and play an extremely important role. In bacterial infectious diseases, CDs exhibit high bactericidal activity as CDs are effective in disrupting bacterial cell membranes leading to bacterial death upon photoactivation. We focus on recent advances in the therapy of cancer and bacteria with CDs, and also briefly summarize the mechanisms and requirements for PSs in PDT of cancer, bacteria and other diseases. We also discuss the role CDs play in combination therapy and the potential for future applications against other pathogens.

Abstract
Patients with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma (MLA) and malignant pleural effusion (MPE) without driver gene mutations have a poor prognosis. None of the standard treatment strategies is recommended for such patients. We retrospectively analyzed the efficacy of the first-line treatment for this specific population: standard platinum-based doublet chemotherapy (CT), CT plus an immune checkpoint inhibitor (CT plus ICI), and CT plus bevacizumab (CT plus Bev). A total of 323 eligible patients were enrolled: CT alone (n = 166), CT plus Bev (n = 72), and CT plus ICI (n = 85). Treatment efficacy assessments were performed every two cycles according to the RECIST guidelines. The endpoints were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Kaplan-Meier (K‒M) curves and the log-rank test were used to compare OS and PFS. p < 0.05 was the threshold of significance (statistical software: SPSS). The median follow-up was 11.4 months (range, 2.1-49.6 months). PFS and OS in the CT plus ICI/CT plus Bev cohort were significantly longer than those in the CT group (PFS: 7.8/6.4/3.9 months, p < 0.0001; OS: 16.4/15.6/9.6 months, p < 0.0001, respectively). CT plus Bev had better PFS and OS than CT plus ICI/CT in PD-L1 < 1% patients (PFS: 8.4/5.0/3.8 months, p < 0.0001; OS: 15.6/12.9/9.3 months, p < 0.0001). Among patients with PD-L1 1-49%, CT plus ICI led to a longer PFS and OS (PFS: 8.9/5.8/4.2 months, p = 0.009; OS: 24.2/18.8/11.5 months, p = 0.03). In the cohort with PD-L1 ≥ 50%, CT plus ICI was still the best first-line treatment (PFS: 19.7/13.8/9.6 months, p = 0.033; OS: 27.2/19.6/14.9 months, p = 0.047). In driver gene-negative MLA with MPE, CT plus Bev or ICI better controlled MPE and significantly prolonged survival compared to CT alone. PD-L1 expression (negative/positive) may be a key factor influencing the choice of CT plus Bev or ICI.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to quantify the localised effects of mechanical loading (ML), low (20 μg/kg/day), moderate (40 μg/kg/day) or high (80 μg/kg/day) dosages of parathyroid hormone (PTH), and combined (PTHML) treatments on cortical bone adaptation in healthy 19-week old female C57BL/6 mice. To this end, we utilise a previously reported image analysis algorithm on μCT data of the mouse tibia published by Sugiyama et al. (2008) to measure changes in cortical area, marrow cavity area and local cortical thickness measures (ΔCt.Ar, ΔMa.Ar, ΔCt.Th respectively), evaluated at two cross-sections within the mouse tibia (proximal-middle (37 %) and middle (50 %)), and are compared to a superposed summation (P + M) of individual treatments to determine the effectiveness of combining treatments in vivo. ΔCt.Ar analysis revealed a non-linear, synergistic interactions between PTH and ML in the 37 % cross-section that saturates at higher PTH dosages, whereas the 50 % cross-section experiences an approximately linear, additive adaptation response. This coincided with an increase in ΔMa.Ar (indicating resorption of the endosteal surface), which was only counteracted by combined high dose PTH with ML in the middle cross-section. Regional analysis of ΔCt.Th changes reveal localised cortical thinning in response to low dose PTH treatment in the posteromedial region of the middle cross-section, signifying that PTH does not provide a homogeneous adaptation response around the cortical perimeter. We observe a synergistic response in the proximal-middle cross-section, with regions of compressive strain experiencing the greatest adaptation response to PTHML treatments, (peak ΔCt.Th of 189.32, 213.78 and 239.30 μm for low, moderate and high PTHML groups respectively). In contrast, PTHML treatments in the middle cross-section show a similar response to the superposed P + M group, with the exception of the combined high dose PTHML treatment which shows a synergistic interaction. These analyses suggest that, in mice, adding mechanical loading to PTH treatments leads to region specific bone responses; synergism of PTHML is only achieved in some regions experiencing high loading, while other regions respond additively to this combined treatment.

Abstract
Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradability have become one of the most relevant characteristics for all contaminants. This is especially important in case of surfactants, which are discharged in wastewater treatment plants or directly into the aquatic bodies. The aim of this study is the integral assessment of the biodegradability of the non-ionic surfactant polyoxyethylene glycerol ester PGE-OE17. The aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of PGE-OE17 was evaluated at different initial surfactant concentrations, and the evolution of the toxicity of the surfactant and its by-products was followed during the aerobic and anaerobic processes using bacteria Vibrio fischeri. PGE-OE17 was not completely biodegradable neither aerobically nor anaerobically, and the increase in the initial surfactant concentration had a negative effect in the biodegradation. Toxicity of the surfactant solutions and degradation by-products had a first increase followed by a gradual decrease during both tests, revealing that toxic substances released can harm the microorganisms and therefore hinder the biodegradation. Additionally, combined aerobic-anaerobic biodegradation tests were performed, consisting in a first aerobic treatment of different duration and initial concentration, followed by a complete anaerobic treatment. Results showed that a balance between aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation duration can maximize the biodegradation rates in comparison with only aerobic or anaerobic tests.

Abstract
Glioblastoma (GB) has susceptibility to post-surgical recurrence. Therefore, local treatment methods are required against recurrent GB cells in the post-surgical area. In this study, we developed a nanofiber-based local therapy against GB cells using Oleuropein (OL), and rutin and their combinations with Temozolomide (TMZ). The polylactic acid (PLA) core-shell nanofiber webs were encapsulated with OL (PLAOL), rutin (PLArutin), and TMZ (PLATMZ) by an electrospinning process. A SEM visualized the morphology and the total immersion method determined the release characteristics of PLA webs. Real-time cell tracking analysis for cell growth, dual Acridine Orange/Propidium Iodide staining for cell viability, a scratch wound healing assay for migration capacity, and a sphere formation assay for tumor spheroid aggressiveness were used. All polymeric nanofiber webs had core-shell structures with an average diameter between 133 ± 30.7-139 ± 20.5 nm. All PLA webs promoted apoptotic cell death, suppressed cell migration, and spheres growth (p < 0.0001). PLAOL and PLATMZ suppressed GB cell viability with a controlled release that increased over 120 h, while PLArutin caused rapid cell inhibition (p < 0.0001). Collectively, our findings suggest that core-shell nano-webs could be a novel and effective therapeutic tool for the controlled release of OL and TMZ against recurrent GB cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of electroacupuncture(EA) combined with bone marrow mesen-chymal stem cells(BMSCs) transplantation on the endometrium of rats with intrauterine adhesions(IUA), so as to explore the possible mechanisms underlying their combined therapeutic effects. METHODS Forty adult female SD rats were randomly divided into control, model, cell, and combined groups. The IUA rat model was established using a dual injury method of mechanical scratching and lipopolysaccharide infection. After successful modeling, on days 1, 3, and 7, rats in the model group received tail vein injection of phosphate buffered solution, while rats in the cell group received tail vein injection of BMSCs suspension for BMSCs transplantation;and rats in the combined group received BMSCs transplantation combined with EA treatment (2 Hz/15 Hz, 1-2 mA), targeting the "Guanyuan"(CV4), bilateral "Zusanli"(ST36) and "Sanyinjiao"(SP6) for 20 min daily for 3 consecutive estrous cycles. After intervention, uterine tissue was collected from 5 rats in each group. Histological analysis was performed using hematoxylin and eosin staining to evaluate endometrial thickness and glandular number. Masson staining was used to assess endometrial fibrosis area. Immunohistochemistry was performed to detect the positive expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF), proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA), and estrogen receptor(ER). Western blot analysis was conducted to determine the protein expressions of homeobox A10(HoxA10) and leukemia inhibitory factor(LIF), both key regulators of endometrial receptivity. The remaining 5 rats in each group were co-housed with male rats, and the uterine function recovery was evaluated by assessing the number of embryo implantations. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the model group showed thinning endometrium(P<0.001), decreased glandular number(P<0.001), increased endometrial fibrosis area(P<0.001), reduced positive expressions of VEGF, PCNA, ER, expressions of HoxA10 and LIF, and decreased embryo implantation number (P<0.001) on the injured side of the uterus. Compared with the model group, the combined group showed a reversal of the aforementioned indicators(P<0.001, P<0.01);the cell group exhibited thicker endometrium(P<0.001) and reduced endometrial fibrosis area(P<0.001). Compared with the cell group, the combined group showed increased endometrial thickness(P<0.01), elevated glandular number(P<0.05), significantly decreased endometrial fibrosis area(P<0.05), enhanced positive expressions of VEGF, PCNA and ER, expressions of HoxA10 and LIF in the endometrium, and a significant increase in embryo implantation number (P<0.001, P<0.05, P<0.01) on the injured side of the uterus, indicating better results than the cell group. CONCLUSIONS The combination of EA and BMSCs synergistically promotes the repair of damaged endometrium, improves endometrial morphology, reduces fibrosis levels, enhances vascular regeneration and matrix cell proliferation, improves endometrial receptivity, which ultimately facilitates embryo implantation.

Abstract
Pea protein has attracted widespread attention due to its high nutritional value, low allergenicity, non-GMO status, and broad availability. However, compared to animal proteins, pea protein has inferior functional properties, which limits its application in the food industry. This study used pea protein isolate (PPI) as the main raw material and investigated the effects of high-pressure homogenization (HPH), ultrasonic treatment (US), and the combination of the two in different orders on the structure and function of PPI. The results showed that HPH or US promoted the transformation of PPI insoluble suspension into a uniform protein dispersion, significantly reducing particle size, unfolding the spatial structure, exposing more amino acid residues. These structural changes resulted in a substantial increase in the solubility, foaming capacity and emulsifying activity of PPI. Moreover, the combined treatments further impacted the properties of PPI, largely depending on the order of the processing steps; the combination of HPH-US exhibited the best functional characteristics.

Abstract
Fresh agricultural products are frequently contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes), which threatens consumer health. The mechanism of the inhibitory effect of ultrasound and sodium hypochlorite (US-NaClO) on L. monocytogenes on fresh-cut cucumber remains poorly understood. Therefore, the bactericidal ability and mechanism of US-NaClO treatment on L. monocytogenes were studied on fresh-cut cucumber during storage using various approaches such as determination of intracellular material leakage, scanning electron microscopy, flow cytometry, and expression analysis of virulence genes. The results showed that the number of L. monocytogenes on fresh-cut cucumber was significantly reduced after ultrasound treatment for 5 min in combined with 75 ppm sodium hypochlorite treatment(P < 0.05). The US-NaClO treatment affected cell morphology, impaired cell membrane integrity, increased cell membrane permeability, and reduced the concentration of K+, inorganic phosphate, ATP, proteins, and DNA in bacterial cells, leading to the inactivation of microorganisms. In addition, the US-NaClO treatment downregulated expression of the virulence genes actA, hly, inlA, mpl, pclA, and plcB, thus decreasing the pathogenicity of bacteria. It can avoid contamination by pathogenic bacteria during the production of fresh-cut cucumber, while providing safety assurance for production.

Abstract
Biofilm formation is a rising concern in the food industry. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is one of the most important food-borne pathogens that can survive in food and food-related environments and eventually produce biofilms. This study suggested that both coliphages used were successful in preventing the creation of new biofilms as well as removing existing ones. Confocal laser scanning microscopy verified these findings. According to the findings, neither coliphage survived at 37 °C, but both remained stable at 4 °C and - 20 °C for extended periods of time. The study revealed that both coliphages demonstrated a greater degree of gamma irradiation resistance when compared to E. coli. The study's results indicate that the implementation of a dual method, which incorporates gamma irradiation (1.5 kGy) and coliphage treatment, on various kinds of vegetables that were infected with E. coli, resulted in a significant reduction in bacterial count (surpassing 99.99%) following a 24-h incubation period. Combining gamma irradiation and the coliphage approach was significantly effective at lowering polysaccharide concentrations and proteins in the biofilm matrix. The results revealed that the pairing of gamma irradiation and coliphages acted in conjunction to cause disruptions in the matrix of biofilm, thereby promoting cell removal compared with either of the individual treatments. Ca+ ions strengthen the weak virion interaction with the relevant bacterial host cell receptors during the adsorption process. In conclusion, use of coliphage in combination with gamma irradiation treatment can be applied to improve fresh produce's microbial safety and enhance its storability in supermarkets.

Abstract
The serious widespread development of nematode resistance has motivated the use of combined anthelmintic formulations. However, the advantages/disadvantages of the combined use of anthelmintics require further scientific characterization. The goals of the current trial were a) to characterize the pharmacokinetics of closantel (CLO) and moxidectin (MXD) administered both subcutaneously (sc) and orally either separately or co-administered (CLO + MXD) to lambs; b) to compare the nematodicidal activity of both molecules given individually or co-administered to lambs infected with resistant nematodes. Seventy (70) Corriedale lambs naturally infected with multiple resistant gastrointestinal nematodes were involved in the pharmacokinetic and efficacy trials. The animals were allocated into six groups (n = 10) and treated with either CLO, MXD, or with the CLO + MXD combined formulation by both the oral and sc routes. Additionally, an untreated control group (n = 10) was included for the efficacy trial. The efficacy was estimated by the faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). Higher systemic exposure of both CLO and MXD was observed after the sc compared to the oral administration in lambs. The combined administration of CLO + MXD did not markedly alter their disposition kinetics. At 13 days post-treatment, the administration of both molecules as a single active principle reached efficacy levels ranging between 80% (MXDoral), 84% (CLOoral), 85% (CLOsc), and 92% (MXDsc). The combined oral and sc treatments reached 99% efficacy. No adverse effects were observed after the combined treatment of CLO + MXD, and their co-administration did not show any adverse pharmacokinetic interaction. The combined effect of CLO + MXD successfully restored the maximum efficacy levels, which were not reached by the individual active ingredients.

Abstract
Myocardial infarction (MI) causes irreversible damage to the heart muscle, seriously threatening the lives of patients. Injectable hydrogels have attracted extensive attention in the treatment of MI. By promoting the coupling of mechanical and electrical signals between cardiomyocytes, combined with synergistic therapeutic strategies targeting the pathological processes of inflammation, proliferation, and fibrotic remodeling after MI, it is expected to improve the therapeutic effect. In this study, a pH/ROS dual-responsive injectable hydrogel was developed by modifying xanthan gum and gelatin with reversible imine bond and boronic ester bond double crosslinking. By encapsulating polydopamine-rosmarinic acid nanoparticles to achieve on-demand drug release in response to the microenvironment of MI, thereby exerting anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and anti-fibrosis effects. By adding conductive composites to improve the conductivity and mechanical strength of the hydrogel, restore electrical signal transmission in the infarct area, promote synchronous contraction of cardiomyocytes, avoid induced arrhythmias, and induce angiogenesis. Furthermore, the multifunctional hydrogel promoted the expression of cardiac-specific markers to restore cardiac function after MI. The in vivo and in vitro results demonstrate the effectiveness of this synergistic comprehensive treatment strategy in MI treatment, showing great application potential to promote the repair of infarcted hearts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Complex cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) require a combined therapy of endovascular embolization and microsurgical resection to eliminate the lesion and maximize neurological protection, while a deliberate time interval might contribute to optimal clinical outcomes. The present study aimed to explore the feasibility of this paradigm. METHODS All patients who underwent deliberately planned presurgery embolization and microsurgery resection between 2015 and 2023 were reviewed, with baseline data, postoperative complications, and follow-up outcomes recorded. The modified Rankin scale (mRS) was used to evaluate clinical outcomes, with mRS 0-2 defined as good. RESULTS A total of 30 patients were included in the study (15 were ruptured AVMs). The median Spetzler-Martin grade of baseline AVMs was 3 (interquartile range: 2-3). The median interval between the last embolization and microsurgery was 5 days (interquartile range: 2.25-7). The complete removal rate was 100%, and the overall permanent complication rate was 16.67%. At the last follow-up, 26 patients achieved mRS 0-2, while 28 had improved or unaltered mRS. The last follow-up mRS significantly improved from baseline and discharge (P = 0.0006 and P = 0.006). The last follow-up mRS decreased by 0.65 for each additional day of time interval before the 4.4-day inflection point (β = -0.65, P = 0.02) in the AVM ruptured cohort. CONCLUSIONS The deliberately staged combined procedure of embolization and microsurgery might be a safe and efficacious strategy for Spetzler-Martin grade 2-5 AVMs, 4-5 days might be an appropriate staged time interval for ruptured AVMs, although further studies are needed to substantiate these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adding short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) to antidepressants increases treatment efficacy, but it is unclear which patients benefit specifically. This study examined efficacy moderators of combined treatment (STPP + antidepressants) v. antidepressants for adults with depression. METHODS For this systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42017056029), we searched PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase.com, and the Cochrane Library from inception to 1 January 2022. We included randomized clinical trials comparing combined treatment (antidepressants + individual outpatient STPP) v. antidepressants in the acute-phase treatment of depression in adults. Individual participant data were requested and analyzed combinedly using mixed-effects models (adding Cochrane risk of bias items as covariates) and an exploratory machine learning technique. The primary outcome was post-treatment depression symptom level. RESULTS Data were obtained for all seven trials identified (100%, n = 482, combined: n = 238, antidepressants: n = 244). Adding STPP to antidepressants was more efficacious for patients with high rather than low baseline depression levels [B = -0.49, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.61 to -0.37, p < 0.0001] and for patients with a depressive episode duration of >2 years rather than <1 year (B = -0.68, 95% CI -1.31 to -0.05, p = 0.03) and than 1-2 years (B = -0.86, 95% CI -1.66 to -0.06, p = 0.04). Heterogeneity was low. Effects were replicated in analyses controlling for risk of bias. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first study that examines moderators across trials assessing the addition of STPP to antidepressants. These findings need validation but suggest that depression severity and episode duration are factors to consider when adding STPP to antidepressants and might contribute to personalizing treatment selection for depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy of combined mifepristone and misoprostol compared to misoprostol alone in outpatient medical treatment of first trimester miscarriage. Additionally, the study intends to compare the rate of complications, adverse effects, and treatment acceptability between groups. STUDY DESIGN Single-center double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial including women with diagnosis of missed first trimester miscarriage up to 9 weeks of gestation. RESULTS Between April 2019 and November 2021, 216 women diagnosed with first trimester miscarriage up to 9 weeks of gestation were randomly assigned to mifepristone group or to misoprostol-alone group. Data from 105 women in mifepristone group and 103 women in misoprostol-alone group were analyzed, with no differences in baseline characteristics. The median time between medications (oral mifepristone/placebo and vaginal misoprostol) was nearly 43 h in both groups (p = 0.906). The median time to first follow-up was 2.6 weeks (IQR 1.0) in mifepristone group and 2.4 weeks (IQR 1.0) in misoprostol-alone group (p = 0.855). The overall success rate of medical treatment was significantly higher in the mifepristone-group comparing to misoprostol-alone group (94.3% vs. 82.5%, RR 1.14, 95% CI, 1.03-1.26; p = 0.008). Accordingly, the rate of surgical treatment was significantly lower in the mifepristone-group (5.7% vs.14.6%, RR 0.39, 95% CI, 0.16-0.97; p = 0.034). The composite complication rate was similar and lower than 4% in both groups. No case of complicated pelvic infection, hemodynamic instability or inpatient supportive treatment was reported. There were no significant differences in the rates of adverse events, median score for vaginal bleeding intensity or analgesics use. Despite the same median value, the score of abdominal pain intensity was significantly higher in the mifepristone-group (p = 0.011). In both groups, more than 65% of the women classified the treatment as "good" and 92% would recommend it to a friend on the same clinical situation. CONCLUSION The mifepristone plus vaginal misoprostol combined treatment for medical resolution of first trimester miscarriage resulted in significant higher success rate and lower rate of surgical uterine evacuation comparing to misoprostol-alone treatment, with no relevant differences in adverse events or treatment acceptability.

Abstract
Behavioral treatment, stimulants, and their combination are the recommended treatments for childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The current study utilizes within-subjects manipulations of multiple doses of methylphenidate (placebo, 0.15, 0.30, and 0.60 mg/kg/dose t.i.d.) and intensities of behavioral modification (no, low, and high intensity) in the summer treatment program (STP) and home settings. Outcomes are evaluated in the home setting. Participants were 153 children (ages 5-12) diagnosed with ADHD. In alignment with experimental conditions implemented during the STP day, parents implemented behavioral modification levels in three-week intervals, child medication status varied daily, and the orders were randomized. Parents provided daily reports of child behavior, impairment, and symptoms and self-reported parenting stress and self-efficacy. At the end of the study, parents reported treatment preferences. Stimulant medication led to significant improvements across all outcome variables with higher doses resulting in greater improvement. Behavioral treatment significantly improved child individualized goal attainment, symptoms, and impairment in the home setting and parenting stress and self-efficacy. Effect sizes indicate that behavioral treatment combined with a low-medium dose (0.15 or 0.30 mg/kg/dose) of medication results in equivalent or superior outcomes compared to a higher dose (0.60 mg/kg/dose) of medication alone. This pattern was seen across outcomes. Parents overwhelmingly reported preferring treatment with a behavioral component as a first-choice treatment (99%). Results underscore the need to consider dosing as well as parent preference when utilizing combined treatment approaches. This study provides further evidence that combining behavioral treatment and stimulant medication may reduce the stimulant dose needed for beneficial effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An intradermal nevus is a common skin tumour, and the classical method of removal has a risk of recurrence and scarring. It is a challenge for dermatologists to treat eyebrow intradermal nevi quickly and efficiently. This study focused on investigating the efficacy and safety of shearing combined with electrocautery and curettage in the treatment of eyebrow intradermal nevi. CASE SUMMARY We describe two adult patients with eyebrow intradermal nevi treated by shearing combined with electrocautery and curettage. Both patients were followed up regularly after surgery. At follow-up, no recurrence of eyebrow intradermal nevus and no obvious scars or hypopigmentation were found in either patient. The results indicated that shearing combined with electrocautery and curettage could remove eyebrow intradermal nevus without side effects and confirmed the efficacy and safety of this modality for treating these skin lesions. CONCLUSION Shearing combined with electrocautery and curettage has superior merits, including simple operation, good cosmetic effects, and high patient satisfaction, presenting great application potential for treating intracutaneous nevus.

Abstract
We describe a case of a 65-year-old woman affected by hemangiopericytoma/solitary fibrous tumor of the right shoulder-subclavian region. Hemangiopericytoma/solitary fibrous tumor is a rare tumor of uncertain malignancy. She reports shoulder pain and inability to abduct the arm and elevate the shoulder. Imaging showed erosion of the scapula. The patient underwent 5 sessions of "on demand" embolization in the previous 2 years scheduled for recurrence of symptoms-swelling of tissues. Further 2 treatments were achieved through embolization via 2 different microballoon catheter combined with percutaneous cryoablation with 5 probes. Images after the treatment demonstrate a marked reduction in the hypervascularized area and an increase in the necrosis area. So, this combined treatment is safety and reproducible also in extrahepatic tissue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Melanoma is a highly metastatic skin cancer with limited response to current therapies in advanced patients. To overcome resistance, novel treatments based on photodynamic and photothermal therapies (PDT and PTT, respectively) have been developed to treat melanoma in preclinical murine models. Despite success inhibiting implanted tumors' growth, there has been limited evaluation of their long-term effectiveness in preventing metastasis, recurrence, or improving survival rates. METHODS Combined and multidrug therapies based on PDT and/or PTT to treat cutaneous malignant melanoma in the preclinical mouse model were reviewed from 2016 onwards. PubMed® was the database in which the search was performed using mesh search algorithms resulting in fifty-one studies that comply with strict inclusion rules of screening. RESULTS B16 melanoma-bearing C57BLACK6 mice model was the most used to evaluate immunotherapies, chemotherapies, and targeted therapies in combination with PDT and/or PTT. Combined therapies demonstrated a synergistic effect, resulting in intense antitumor activity. The most extensively studied protocol for developing metastatic models involved the intravenous administration of malignant cells, with some combined therapies being tested. Furthermore, the review presents the composition of the nanostructures utilized for delivering the drugs and light-responsive agents and the treatment plans for each combined approach. CONCLUSIONS The identified mechanisms to simulate metastatic melanoma models and the therapeutic combinations may aid in evaluating the systemic protection of combined PDT and PTT-based therapies, particularly in conducting short-term preclinical experiments. Such simulations could have relevance to clinical studies.

Abstract
Background Excessive glue injection into the drainage vein in patients with dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF) can result in venous obstruction. We performed transarterial embolization (TAE) combined with transvenous embolization (TVE) with coils to prevent the glue from migrating into the normal cortical veins. Case Description A 57-year-old man was pointed out to have a Borden Type III anterior cranial fossa dAVF during a check-up for putaminal hemorrhage. Because a left frontal normal cortical vein drained into the pathological drainage vein, excessive glue injection into the drainage vein may have caused venous obstruction. We performed TVE with coils at the foot of the draining vein to prevent excessive migration of glue into the drainer, followed by TAE with glue. With this technique, complete obliteration of the shunt without venous ischemia was obtained. Conclusion The combined treatment of TAE and TVE is effective in preventing venous ischemia caused by unintended migration of glue cast into the drainage vein.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The retinal image quality derived from lower-order (LOA) and higher-order aberrations (HOA) for fixed 3-mm and photopic pupil diameters, in children undergoing combined 0.01% atropine and orthokeratology (AOK) versus those receiving orthokeratology alone (OK) over two years was evaluated. METHODS The visual Strehl ratio based on the optical transfer function (VSOTF), derived from 2nd- to 4th-order terms (LOA and HOA combined), 2nd-order terms (LOA only), and 3rd- to 4th-order terms (HOA only) for fixed 3-mm and natural photopic pupil diameters, was compared between the two treatment groups. The individual Zernike coefficients for a fixed 3-mm pupil size of 2nd- to 4th-orders, root mean square (RMS) of LOA ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] combined), HOA (3rd to 4th orders inclusive), and Coma ([Formula: see text] combined) were also compared between the two groups. RESULTS Right eye data of 33 AOK and 35 OK participants were analysed. Under photopic conditions, significantly lower VSOTF based on HOA only was observed in the AOK group compared with that in the OK group at all post-treatment visits (all P < 0.05); however, interactions between HOA and LOA resulted in comparable overall retinal image quality (i.e., VSOTF based on LOA and HOA combined) between the two groups at all visits (all P > 0.05). For a fixed 3-mm pupil size, the VSOTF based on HOA only, LOA only, or HOA and LOA combined, were not different between the two groups (all P > 0.05). AOK participants had slower axial elongation (mean ± SD, 0.17 ± 0.19 mm vs. 0.35 ± 0.20 mm, P < 0.001), a larger photopic pupil size (4.05 ± 0.61 mm vs. 3.43 ± 0.41 mm, P < 0.001) than OK participants, over two years. CONCLUSIONS HOA profile related to an enlarged pupil size may provide visual signal influencing eye growth in the AOK group.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common digestive malignancy across the world. Its first-line treatments applied in the routine clinical setting include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. However, resistance to therapy has been identified as the major clinical challenge that fails the treatment method, leading to recurrence and distant metastasis. An increasing number of studies have been attempting to explore the underlying mechanisms of the resistance of CRC cells to different therapies, which can be summarized into two aspects: (1) The intrinsic characters and adapted alterations of CRC cells before and during treatment that regulate the drug metabolism, drug transport, drug target, and the activation of signaling pathways; and (2) the suppressive features of the tumor microenvironment (TME). To combat the issue of therapeutic resistance, effective strategies are warranted with a focus on the restoration of CRC cells’ sensitivity to specific treatments as well as reprogramming impressive TME into stimulatory conditions. To date, nanotechnology seems promising with scope for improvement of drug mobility, treatment efficacy, and reduction of systemic toxicity. The instinctive advantages offered by nanomaterials enable the diversity of loading cargoes to increase drug concentration and targeting specificity, as well as offer a platform for trying the combination of different treatments to eventually prevent tumor recurrence, metastasis, and reversion of therapy resistance. The present review intends to summarize the known mechanisms of CRC resistance to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy, as well as the process of metastasis. We have also emphasized the recent application of nanomaterials in combating therapeutic resistance and preventing metastasis either by combining with other treatment approaches or alone. In summary, nanomedicine is an emerging technology with potential for CRC treatment; hence, efforts should be devoted to targeting cancer cells for the restoration of therapeutic sensitivity as well as reprogramming the TME. It is believed that the combined strategy will be beneficial to achieve synergistic outcomes contributing to control and management of CRC in the future.

Abstract
Natural compounds originated from plants and microorganisms and their combinations are currently being investigated as a possible treatment for several diseases including cancer. Hypericin (photodynamically-active pigment from Hypericum perforatum L.) and manumycin A (inhibitor of farnesyltransferase from Streptomyces parvulus) belong to the chemicals potentially applicable in clinical practice. In this study we evaluated potential cytotoxic (via trypan blue exclusion test), genotoxic (via DNA-topology and comet assays), and mutagenic effects (via bacterial reverse mutation test) of these compounds and their combinations considering the molecular mechanism of their action in cell-free and cellular systems. Our results did not reveal neither cytotoxic nor mutagenic activities of tested compounds and their combinations. Regarding the genotoxic potential, no damage of plasmid DNA in cell-free system was detected. On the other hand, photoactivated hypericin and manumycin A were able to induce primary DNA damage in human lymphocytes analyzed by comet assay. The possible antagonistic interactions between these two metabolites were estimated using SynergyFinder software analysis and experimental data obtained from comet assay. Our findings indicate that not only the presence of substances, but also their ratio plays an important role in resulting effects of the combined treatment in cellular system.

Abstract
In the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), comprehensive management of multiple risk factors, such as blood glucose, body weight, and lipids, is important to prevent disease progression. Although the combination of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor and sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor is often used clinically, the effects of this combination, other than glucose metabolism, have yet to be thoroughly investigated. In this study, we evaluated the effects of combined treatment with a DPP-4 inhibitor, teneligliptin, and an SGLT2 inhibitor, canagliflozin, on the body weight and lipid metabolism in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. We found that monotherapy with teneligliptin or canagliflozin showed suppressive effects on high-fat diet-induced body weight gain and reduced inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT) mass, and combined treatment additively reduced body weight gain and iWAT mass. Teneligliptin significantly increased oxygen consumption during the light phase, and this effect was preserved in the combined treatment. The combined treatment did not alter the mRNA expression levels of thermogenesis-related genes in adipose tissue but showed the tendency to additively induce mRNA of fatty acid oxidation-related genes in brown adipose tissue and tended to additively decrease mRNA of fatty acid synthesis-related genes in iWAT and liver tissues. These results suggest that combined treatment with teneligliptin and canagliflozin additively suppresses HFD-induced body weight gain with increasing oxygen consumption and modulating the expression of lipid metabolism-related genes. This combination therapy may provide effective body weight management for patients with T2DM and obesity.

Abstract
Obesity is a complex chronic disease and requires a long-term multimodal approach. The current treatment algorithm for treatment of obesity mainly consists of a stepwise approach, which starts with a lifestyle intervention followed by or combined with medication treatment, whereas bariatric surgery is often reserved for the last option. This article provides an overview of the currently available conservative medicinal treatment regimens and the currently approved medications as well as medications currently undergoing approval studies with respect to the efficacy and possible side effects. Special attention is paid to the importance of combination treatment of pharmacotherapy and surgery in the sense of a multimodal treatment. The data so far show that using a multimodal approach an improvement in the long-term weight loss and metabolic benefits can be achieved for the patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate whether combining 0.01% atropine with orthokeratology (AOK) has a better effect in retarding axial elongation, compared with orthokeratology alone (OK) over two years. METHODS A total of 96 Chinese children aged six to < 11 years with myopia (1.00 - 4.00 D, inclusive) were randomized into either the AOK or OK group in a 1:1 ratio. Axial length (the primary outcome), and secondary outcomes (e.g. pupil size and choroidal thickness) were measured at 1-month and at 6-monthly intervals after commencement of treatment. RESULTS Both intention-to-treat and per-protocol analyses showed significantly slower axial elongation in the AOK group than OK group over two years (P = 0.008, P < 0.001, respectively). AOK subjects had statistically slower axial elongation (adjusted mean [standard error], 0.17 [0.03] mm vs 0.34 [0.03] mm, P < 0.001), larger increase in mesopic (0.70 [0.09] mm vs 0.31 [0.09] mm, P = 0.003) and photopic pupil size (0.78 [0.07] mm vs 0.23 [0.07] mm, P < 0.001), and greater thickening of the choroid (22.6 [3.5] µm vs -9.0 [3.5] µm, P < 0.001) than OK subjects over two years. Except for a higher incidence of photophobia in the AOK group (P = 0.006), there were no differences in the incidence of any other symptom or adverse events between the two groups. Slower axial elongation was associated with a larger increase in the photopic pupil size and a greater thickening in the choroid in the AOK group. CONCLUSIONS Slower axial elongation following 2-year AOK treatment may result from increased pupil dilation and a thickening in the choroid observed in the AOK group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ischemic stroke is a condition in which an occluded blood vessel interrupts blood flow to the brain and causes irreversible neuronal cell death. Transplantation of regenerative stem cells has been proposed as a novel therapy to restore damaged neural circuitry after ischemic stroke attack. However, limitations such as low cell survival rates after transplantation remain significant challenges to stem cell-based therapy for ischemic stroke in the clinical setting. In order to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of transplanted stem cells, several biomaterials have been developed to provide a supportable cellular microenvironment or functional modification on the stem cells to optimize their reparative roles in injured tissues or organs.
AIM To discuss state-of-the-art functional biomaterials that could enhance the therapeutic potential of stem cell-based treatment for ischemic stroke and provide detailed insights into the mechanisms underlying these biomaterial approaches.
METHODS The PubMed, Science Direct and Scopus literature databases were searched using the keywords of “biomaterial” and “ischemic stroke”. All topically-relevant articles were then screened to identify those with focused relevance to in vivo, in vitro and clinical studies related to “stem cells” OR “progenitor cells” OR “undifferentiated cells” published in English during the years of 2011 to 2022. The systematic search was conducted up to September 30, 2022.
RESULTS A total of 19 articles matched all the inclusion criteria. The data contained within this collection of papers comprehensively represented 19 types of biomaterials applied on seven different types of stem/progenitor cells, namely mesenchymal stem cells, neural stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, neural progenitor cells, endothelial progenitor cells, neuroepithelial progenitor cells, and neuroblasts. The potential major benefits gained from the application of biomaterials in stem cell-based therapy were noted as induction of structural and functional modifications, increased stem cell retention rate in the hostile ischemic microenvironment, and promoting the secretion of important cytokines for reparative mechanisms.
CONCLUSION Biomaterials have a relatively high potential for enhancing stem cell therapy. Nonetheless, there is a scarcity of evidence from human clinical studies for the efficacy of this bioengineered cell therapy, highlighting that it is still too early to draw a definitive conclusion on efficacy and safety for patient usage. Future in-depth clinical investigations are necessary to realize translation of this therapy into a more conscientious and judicious evidence-based therapy for clinical application.

Abstract
A growing amount of research suggests that inflammatory responses have a crucial role in the complex pathophysiology of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), a disabling medical condition. The present review has two primary goals. Firstly, to highlight and summarize results from studies that investigated the changes of IL-6 in MDD patients before and after combined treatment. The second aim is to enlighten the need for further research on the difference in the concentration of the pro-inflammatory cytokines between MDD and Treatment-Resistant MDD. The protocol of this study was written using PRISMA, and it is registered at PROSPERO (identification: CRD42021289233). We searched the following bibliographic databases to identify potentially eligible articles without any time limit until September 2021: Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO. As they met the eligibility criteria, 14 articles were included in this systematic review. The selected studies assessed twelve different elements as an adjunction to the standard pharmacotherapy (ECT, Ketamine, CBT, NCT, Ketoprofene, Lithium, Celecoxib, Metformin tDCS, Pentoxifylline, ethyl-EPA, Zinc). Significant results were found in the studies that analyzed the impact of combined treatment with the adjunction of the following elements: ECT, Ketamine, CBT, NCT, Celecoxib, Metformin, and Pentoxifylline. Overall, this systematic review identifies several potentially beneficial combined treatments for MDD patients. Further evidence is needed to confirm the efficacy of reducing IL-6 levels in patients with Treatment-Resistant MDD.

Abstract
Background Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) with neuronal surface antibodies (NSAbs) presents pathogenesis mediated by B cell-secreting antibodies. Rituximab is a second-line choice for the treatment for AE with NSAbs, which can cause B cell depletion via targeting CD20. However, the optimal protocol and dosage of rituximab combined with first-line therapy for NSAbs-associated AE remains unclear so far. In this study, we explored the efficacy and safety of low-dose rituximab combined with first-line treatment for NSAbs-associated AE. Methods Fifty-nine AE patients with NSAbs were enrolled, and retrospectively divided into common first-line therapy (41 patients) and combined low-dose rituximab (100 mg induction weekly with 3 circles, followed by 100 mg reinfusion every 6 months) with first-line therapy (18 patients). Outcome measures included changes in the Clinical Assessment Scale for Autoimmune Encephalitis (CASE) score (primary endpoint), changes in the modified Rankin Scale (mRS), the Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE), the patient and caregiver Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) score at each visit (baseline, discharge, 6 months, 12 months and last follow-up) between two groups (secondary endpoint), as well as oral prednisone dosage, relapse and adverse effects during follow-up. Results Compared with traditional first-line therapy group, for primary outcome, CASE scores at last follow-up were significantly improved in combined rituximab group, as well as markedly improving changes of CASE scores between baseline and each visit. While changes of mRS, MMSE and NPI scores, as secondary endpoint, were all markedly accelerating improvement between baseline and each visit, as well as both oral prednisone dosage and relapse were also greatly reduced during follow-up. Meanwhile, longitudinal analysis in combination of rituximab cohort also revealed persistently marked amelioration in a series of scales from baseline even more than 1 year. Moreover, analysis in rituximab subgroup showed no difference in any clinical outcomes between combination with single first-line and with repeated first-line treatment (≥ 2 times), while compared to delayed combination with rituximab (> 3 months), early initiation of combination (≤ 3 months) might achieve better improvements in CASE and MMSE assessment even 1 year later. No rituximab-correlated serious adverse events have been reported in our patients. Conclusions Our simplified regimen of combined low-dose rituximab firstly showed significantly accelerating short-term recovery and long-term improvement for AE with NSAbs, in parallel with markedly reduced prednisone dosage and clinical relapses. Moreover, opportunity of protocol showed earlier initiation (≤ 3 months) with better long-term improvement. Abstract
By growing the electrical power networks and electronic devices, electromagnetic fields (EMF) have become an inseparable part of the modern world. Considering the inevitable exposure to a various range of EMFs, especially at extremely low frequencies (ELF-EMF), investigating the biological effects of ELF-EMFs on biological systems became a global issue. The possible adverse consequences of these exposures were studied, along with their potential therapeutic capabilities. Also, their biological impacts in combination with other chemical and physical agents, specifically ionizing radiation (IR), as a co-carcinogen or as adjuvant therapy in combination with radiotherapy were explored. Here, we review the results of several in-vitro and in-vivo studies and discuss some proposed possible mechanisms of ELF-EMFs' actions in combination with IR. The results of these experiments could be fruitful to develop more precise safety standards for environmental ELF-EMFs exposures. Furthermore, it could evaluate the therapeutic capacities of ELF-EMFs alone or as an improver of radiotherapy.

Abstract
Background Microwave ablation (MWA) is a potentially curative treatment for unresectable patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ≤ 3 cm, while its therapeutic efficacy decreases significantly for HCC > 3cm. Previous studies have demonstrated that conventional transarterial chemoembolization (cTACE) combined with MWA (cTACE-MWA) may improve local tumor control rate and reduce the recurrence rate for HCC > 3cm. However, there have been few study designs to analyze the clinical efficacy of cTACE-MWA for medium-sized HCC (3–5cm). Therefore, this study aims to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of cTACE-MWA with cTACE alone for a single medium-sized HCC of 3–5 cm in diameter. Methods We retrospectively investigate the data of 90 patients with a single medium-sized HCC who were referred to our hospital and underwent cTACE-MWA or cTACE alone from December 2017 to March 2020. Then, patients were identified with propensity score-matched (1:1). The local tumor response to treatment and time to progression (TTP) were compared using mRECIST criteria between the cTACE-MWA group and the cTACE group. Results A total of 42 patients were included after matching (cTACE-MWA: 21; cTACE: 21). Comparing with cTACE, cTACE-MWA demonstrate significantly better local tumor control (ORR: 95.2% vs 61.9%, p = 0.02; DCR: 95.2% vs 66.7%, p = 0.045) and TTP (median 19.8 months vs 6.8 months, p < 0.001). The 1- and 2-year cumulative probabilities of OS were 100% and 95% in the cTACE-MWA group, which were significantly higher than those in the cTACE group (95% and 76%) (p = 0.032). Multivariate Cox regression analysis illustrates that cTACE-MWA was associated with better TTP (hazard ratio, 0.28; 95% CI: 0.1, 0.76; p = 0.012), but tumor size was associated with worse TTP (hazard ratio, 1.71; 95% CI: 1.01, 2.89; p = 0.045). Conclusions cTACE followed by MWA improved TTP and OS in patients with a single medium-sized HCC, and no major complication was observed in this study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in the world. The clinical benefit of anti-angiogenic strategy as a single drug is limited. Some studies showed that the combination of anti-angiogenic therapy and chemotherapy exhibited synergistic effect and reduced the side effects of chemotherapy drugs. We investigated the combined effects of these two types of drugs in gastric cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. METHODS cell viability, migration, invasion, and apoptosis were evaluated by CCK-8, wound-healing, transwell, and Annexin V-FITC/PI assay, respectively. In vivo anti-cancer efficacy was tested for the cell proliferation and metastasis in cell line derived tumor xenograft (CDX) model and patient derived tumor xenografted (PDX) model based on Tg (fli-1: EGFP) zebrafish embryos; RESULTS: In the cell experiments, the combination of the two types of drugs could inhibit the proliferation and metastasis of gastric cancer cells and promote apoptosis through VEGFR-2/AKT/ERK1/2 signal. In the zebrafish CDX (zCDX) model and zebrafish PDX (zPDX) model, the combination of the two treatment also showed a synergistic effect in inhibiting gastric cancer cell metastasis and cell proliferation. CONCLUSIONS Apatinib/ramucirumab targeted therapy combined with docetaxel or 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) may serve as an effective treatment strategy for patients with advanced gastric cancer.

Abstract
Mutants can be generated by physical or chemical mutagens. The procedure includes mutagenesis treatment, post-treatment, planting of M1, harvest of M1, planting of M2, phenotypic observation or mutation scanning in M2 plants. Here we describe the combined treatment of the rice seeds from the indica variety Tenuo with 137Cs gamma rays at 100 Gy and a chemical mutagen-ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS). Theoretically, the method can be used to study various plant biological processes which include plant gametogenesis in addition to the generation of mutants by straightforward physiological screens. As an example of the procedure, we screened for mutants resistant to imazethapyr, an herbicide which can kill grass weeds.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Bone metastases (BMs) are the common cause of cancer-related pain, as approximately 45% of cancer patients suffer from bone pain (BP). Radiotherapy (RT) is well established as BP treatment strategy; also, other approaches have been shown to be effective in this setting. Radiofrequency thermoablation (RFA) in a combined strategy with RT appears to be feasible and effective in the treatment of metastatic BP ensuring a better quality of life. Aim of this retrospective study was to describe a case series of patients with painful osteolytic lesions at risk of fracture treated with the RFA-RT combined approach, analyzing local control and pain control as outcomes. METHODS Data of all patients with BM treated with combined approach in our center from April 2016 to June 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients underwent RFA followed by cementoplasty on the same day and RT in a second phase. RT dose ranged between 30 and 37.5 Gy in 5/10 fractions. BP was evaluated according to the numeric rating scale (NRS), at the beginning of treatment and at 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months from the end of combined treatment. RESULTS A total of 27 patients were treated from April 2016 to June 2020 with RFA-RT combined approach. The large majority of patients underwent stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) (23/27). All patients experienced an NRS value decrease >2 at 1 month and between the first and second months. NRS mean value reached 0 at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months' evaluations. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION The results of this retrospective analysis of patients treated with RFA-RT combined approach for BP support its safety and efficacy in terms of pain reduction. SBRT role in this combined approach has to be investigated in randomized trials.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prolactin-secreting adenoma (PRLoma) can present as large and invasive neoplasm, with increased markers of cellular proliferation. First-line approach is Dopamine Agonists (DAs) treatment; however, DA-resistance has been reported, especially in male patients. Estrogens induce lactotroph cell replication and PRL secretion: the use of anti-estrogen treatment in patients with PRLoma have been described in few cases. We reported our experience regarding treatment with the aromatase inhibitor anastrozole (ANA) as add-on therapy for male patients with DA resistant PRLoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS We describe four male patients (26, 38, 29 and 19 years old at diagnosis), with PRLoma (median diameter 26 mm, PRL 7730 μg/L). They were resistant to cabergoline (CAB, > 2 mg/week) in terms of PRL secretion and tumor size reduction. ANA 1 mg/day was added to the maximum tolerated dose of CAB for at least 1 year. Magnetic Resonance was performed at baseline, after 6 months of CAB + ANA combination and every 12 months afterward. RESULTS PRL levels decreased in all patients after CAB + ANA (mean - 70%, range - 44/- 97%), achieving a normalization of PRL levels in one case. Tumor size decreased in all cases (mean - 47%, range - 24.5/- 68%). No severe adverse effects have been reported, a moderate weight gain has been observed in two cases. CONCLUSIONS Addition of an aromatase inhibitor (ANA) to the dopamine agonist therapy improved the control of prolactin levels and induced tumour regression.

Abstract
Cell-based drug delivery system holds a great promise in anticancer treatment, due to its potential of maximizing therapeutic efficacy while minimizing adverse effects. However, current cell system can only deliver drugs in tumor lesions, but lack an ability to target subcellular locus of therapeutic actions, thereby compromising anticancer efficacy. Herein, we bioengineered living neutrophils as a novel type of "Photoactive neutrophil" (PAN) with capabilities of self-amplified multistage targeting and inflammation response for enhancing mitochondria-specific photo-chemotherapy. PAN encapsulated multifunctional nanocomplex (RA/Ce6) of RGD-apoptotic peptide conjugate (RA) decorated liposomal photosensitizer Ce6, and could overcome tumor barriers to selectively release RA/Ce6 within tumor. Consequently, RA/Ce6 actively entered cancer cells and accumulated in mitochondria to trigger combined photodynamic therapy (PDT) and RA-induced mitochondrial membrane disruption, resulting in enhanced therapeutic effects. Importantly, PAN exhibited inflammation amplified tumor targeting after PDT, and initiated combined photo-chemotherapy to suppress tumor growth without adverse effects, leading to prolonged mice survival. Therefore, PAN represents the first multistage targeted cell therapy, and brings new insights into cancer treatment.

Abstract
Although targeted therapies and immunotherapies have been effective against several malignancies, the respective monotherapies are limited by low and/or short-term responses. Specific inhibitors of oncogenic signaling pathways and tumor-associated angiogenesis can activate the anti-tumor immune responses by increasing tumor antigen presentation or intratumor T cell infiltration. Additional insights into the effects and mechanisms of targeted therapies on the induction of anti-tumor immunity will facilitate development of rational and effective combination strategies that synergize rapid tumor regression and durable response. In this review, we have summarized the recent combinations of targeted therapies and immunotherapies, along with the associated clinical challenges.

Abstract
The existence of synthetic dyes and heavy metals in textile wastewater is a serious problem. These compounds should be removed before discharge into the environment by an appropriate method. The present study was conducted for the characterization of efficient multi-functional strain Bacillus cereus MS038EH for the simultaneous removal of Reactive Black-5 and Chromium(VI). Maximum decolorization efficiency of 94.74% was achieved at pH 7, 35 °C, and 4% inoculum size for 900 mg/L of Reactive Black-5. Also, 94.10% efficiency was observed in the presence of 8 g/L of yeast extract as an optimum nitrogen source, while carbon sources had no significant effect on decolorization. It should be pointed out that the decolorization efficiency was decreased from 94 to 64% by increasing NaCl concentrations from 0 to 50 g/L, respectively. Bacillus cereus strain MS038EH could decolorize 94.31% of Reactive Black-5 (900 mg/L) and remove 87.31% of chromium(VI) (30 mg/L) within 36 h. Results of Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy proved that Reactive Black-5 was cleaved into the lower molecular weight products without any azo bonds. However, the phyto-toxicity analysis showed that Reactive Black-5 was not toxic for Triticum aestivum and Maize, while biologically treated Reactive Black-5 was toxic for seeds. Therefore, ultraviolet-C/H2O2 was applied for the detoxification of biotransformed products. When ultraviolet-C/H2O2 was applied as post-treatment, the seeds were germinated completely. It is demonstrated that the application of ultraviolet-C/H2O2 after anaerobic treatment is effective for toxicity reduction of textile wastewater.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite surgical and endovascular technical improvements over the last decades, the treatment of complex aneurysms of the distal anterior cerebral artery (ACA) is very challenging for both vascular neurosurgeons and interventional neuroradiologists. Furthermore, the interpersonal anatomic variability requires, most of the time, a tailored planning. OBJECTIVE To describe a novel technique of bypasses in the territory of ACA to protect the brain territory distal to the aneurysm. METHODS A 53-yr-old male with a large complex fusiform aneurysm of the left distal A2 segment of the ACA, involving the origin of the callosomarginal and pericallosal arteries, was judged not suitable for a single procedure (endovascular or neurosurgical). Two side-to-side bypasses were performed in a single surgery to connect the pericallosal and callosomarginal arteries of both sides, distally to the aneurysm. Subsequently, an endovascular embolization of the aneurysm was achieved with coils. RESULTS The patency of the microanastomoses, performed in the anterior interhemispheric fissure, was positively evaluated intraoperatively with indocyanine green and fluorescein videoangiography. The aneurysm sac, together with proximal A2 segment, was completely occluded with platinum coils. At the last follow-up, computed tomography angiography confirmed the patency of both bypasses, without any sign of aneurysm recanalization. The patients never complained of any focal neurological deficits or worsening of clinical status. CONCLUSION We present an elegant and innovative solution to completely protect the distal ACA territory in cases of complex aneurysm involving the origin of both callosomarginal and pericallosal arteries.

Abstract
Infections caused by mucorales, with an increasing incidence after candidiasis and aspergillosis, are characterized by the fast angioinvasion of blood vessels and invasion of neighboring organs or structures. Mucorales most commonly cause rhinocerebral, pulmonary, cutaneous, digestive or disseminated infections, and their spread is favored by certain underlying diseases (diabetes, kidney failure) and risk factors (neutropenia, immunosuppression, iron overload). These infections have a high mortality rate, over 40% in many series, and the key to their cure depends on both an early diagnosis and an antifungal treatment, associated in most cases with extensive surgical debridement and other adjunctive therapies. Currently, there are international guidelines, not only local ones, for the management of mucormycosis, in which it is considered by consensus and with a strong recommendation that first-line treatment with high-dose liposomal amphotericin B is the best choice. The combined antifungal treatment of polyene agents with triazoles or candins remains in open debate.

Abstract
Prions are proteins that cause fatal neurodegenerative diseases. The misfolded conformation adopted by prions can be transmitted to other normally folded proteins. Therapeutics to stop prion proliferation have been studied experimentally; however, it is not clear how the combination of different types of treatments can decrease the growth rate of prions in the brain. In this article, we combine the implementation of pharmacological chaperones and interferons to develop a novel model using a non-linear system of ordinary differential equations and study the quantitative effects of these two treatments on the growth rate of prions. This study aims to identify how the two treatments affect prion proliferation, both individually and in tandem. We analyze the model, and qualitative global results on the disease-free and disease equilibria are proved analytically. Numerical simulations, using parameter values from in vivo experiments that provide a pharmaceutically important demonstration of the effects of these two treatments, are presented here. This mathematical model can be used to identify and optimize the best combination of the treatments within their safe ranges.

Abstract
Preoperative radiotherapy in patients with soft tissue sarcomas is characterized by important advantages: high precision of dose delivery, reduction of tumor volume and implantation potential, induction of immunologic response. Postoperative irradiation is associated with a reduced risk of complication, and a comprehensive radiotherapy planning in accordance with the pathologic report. Combination of pre- and postoperative irradiation gives the opportunity to use the best of both methods. OBJECTIVE To analyze feasibility and safety of radiotherapy protocol that combined pre- and postoperative radiotherapy in patients with soft tissues sarcomas of extremities. MATERIALS AND METHODS From 06.2018 to 01.2021, 23 patients with soft tissue sarcomas of extremities were included in the protocol (NCT04330456) and 14 cases with at least 12 months follow-up were eligible for analysis. Preoperative stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SBRT) was performed as 5 fraction of 7 Gy with dose reduction (5 fractions of 5 Gy) on the margins of the tumor. Postoperative radiotherapy started 5-8 weeks after the surgery and was performed as standard compartmental irradiation in 25 fractions of 2 Gy. Complications were determined according to CTCAE and wound complication scales. RESULTS Preoperative SBRT and subsequent radical resection with tumor free surgical margins were performed in all 14 cases. Primary wound closure was mentioned in all patients. Postoperative radiotherapy started 51.8 days (range 33-99 days) days after the surgery. With a relatively short follow-up of 21.5 (13-30) months, we recorded 2 cases (14%) of severe complications (Canadian sarcoma group criteria), and there were no local recurrences. CONCLUSION Our preliminary results demonstrate that the combination of preoperative SBRT and postoperative conventional radiotherapy is feasible and does not increase the risk of postoperative complications.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer. Several treatment options are available for managing HCC patients, classified roughly as local, local-regional, and systemic therapies. The high post-monotherapy recurrence rate of HCC urges the need for the use of combined modalities to increase tumor control and patient survival. Different international guidelines offer treatment recommendations based on different points of view and classification systems. Radiotherapy (RT) is a well-known local-regional treatment modality for managing many types of cancers, including HCC. However, only some of these treatment guidelines include RT, and the role of combined modalities is rarely mentioned. Hence, the present study reviewed clinical evidence for the use of different combined modalities in managing HCC, focusing on modern RT's role. Modern RT has an increased utility in managing HCC patients, mainly due to two driving forces. First, technological advancement (e.g., stereotactic body radiotherapy and advanced proton-beam therapy) enables precise delivery of radiation to increase tumor control and reduce side effects in the surrounding normal tissue. Second, the boom in developing target therapies and checkpoint-blockade immunotherapy prolongs overall survival in HCC patients, re-emphasizing the importance of local tumor control. Remarkably, RT combines with systemic therapies to generate the systemic therapy augmented by radiotherapy effect, a benefit now being actively investigated.

Abstract
In this study, the reduction of the emerging organic contaminant atrazine in water, was investigated by adsorption, oxidation and a combination of both technologies. Adsorption tests were performed using method ASTM D3860-98 with two types of activated carbon: powdered activated carbon and granular activated carbon. For the oxidation tests, advanced ozone oxidation technology was used. Finally, in the combined tests, firstly adsorption treatment was applied followed by oxidation and then the order was reversed. We studied the contaminant removal percentage using different treatments at various reaction times. Results for the different treatments under study showed that, for an initial atrazine concentration of 0.7 mg L-1 and a dose of 16 mg L-1 of powdered activated carbon, with contact times of 60 min, 24 h and 48 h, percentage reductions of the contaminant of 81%, 92% and 94% respectively were obtained. For the same concentration of contaminant, but instead using granular activated carbon, the percentage reduction of atrazine at 60 min was 2%, this percentage rising to 34% and 35% after 24 and 48 h of contact time, respectively. For the same initial contaminant concentration, when ozone was applied at a dose of 19.7 mg L-1, and with a reaction time of 18 min, a reduction of atrazine of 93% was obtained, but oxidation by-products were also produced. For the combined treatments, with the same initial concentration of contaminant and the same doses of carbon and ozone as previously indicated, better contaminant reductions were obtained when the treatment started with activated carbon followed by ozone, achieving a 90% reduction of atrazine observing a 17 minute contact time with powdered activated carbon and a 3 day contact time using the granulated carbon. When the order was reversed by starting with ozone, the contact time was 52 min and 4 days, respectively.
