Three coordination polymers based on 4,4'-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)diphenyl ether: Synthesis, structure and selective fluorescent sensing properties

Three CPs [Zn2(PDA)2(BMIOPE)2·3H2O]n (1), [Co(Br-BDC)(BMIOPE)]n (2) and [Co(MIP)(BMIOPE)]n (3) were synthesized by solvothermal method based on dual-ligand strategy (H2PDA, Br-H2BDC, BMIOPE and H2MIP are 1,3-phenylenediacetic acid, 5-bromo-isophthalic acid, 4,4'-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)diphenyl ether and 5-methylisophthalic acid, respectively). Complexes 1 and 3 exhibit twofold parallel interwoven sql nets. Complex 2 is 2D layer structure. The luminescence property investigations showed that complexes 1-3 could act as multi-responsive fluorescent sensors to detect UO22+, Cr2O72- and CrO42- and nitrofurantoin (NFT) through fluorescence turn-off process, presenting excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Finally, the possible fluorescent quenching mechanisms of complexes 1-3 toward the above pollutants are also further investigated by employing spectroscopic methods and quantum chemical calculations. The fluorescence lifetime measurements manifest the mechanism of fluorescence quenching is static quenching process.

Mn(II) Coordination Complex Loaded Hydrogel: Synthesis, Characterization, Fluorescence Properties, and Application in Treating Knee Arthritis

Using a mixed-ligand approach, we successfully obtained two Mn(II)-based coordination compounds, namely [Mn2(L1)(TBIP)·H2O]n (1) and [Mn2(L2)(NPTA)·H2O]n (2) (where L1 and L2 are 1,4-bis(thiabenzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene and 1,2-bis(thiabenzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, H2NPTA is 2-nitroterephthalic acid, and H2TBIP is 5-tert-butylisophthalic acid). Fluorescence performance testing of complexes 1 and 2 showed excellent green and blue fluorescence properties. Based on this, we further prepared HA/CMCS hydrogels using natural polysaccharides hyaluronic acid (HA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) as raw materials and studied their internal structural characteristics using scanning electron microscopy. Using "Duhuo Jisheng Decoction" as a drug model, two metal gel scaffolds loaded with "Duhuo Jisheng Decoction" were prepared, and their potential for treating knee osteoarthritis was evaluated.

Diamondoid Ni(II) Coordination Polymer as an Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution Reactions and Overall Water Splitting

We have successfully synthesized a new Ni(II)-based coordination polymer (CP) [Ni2(cis-1,4-chdc)2(4,4'-bpy)3(H2O)2] (1); (cis-1,4- H2chdc=cis-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and 4,4'-bpy=4,4'-bipyridine) employing slow diffusion method in a single pot technique. The connectivity of Ni(II) ions and bridging cis-1,4-chdc ligand gives rise to a three-dimensional (3D) framework with 2-fold interpenetrated diamondoid topology. Interestingly, the synthesized CP acts as efficient catalyst for electrocatalytic water splitting. The water oxidation activity of compound 1 exhibits Tafel slope equivalent to 361.48 mV.dec-1 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 353.53 mV.dec-1 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline medium while almost similar values of Tafel slope for HER and OER equivalent to 287.33 mV.dec-1 and 289.93 mV.dec-1 respectively in acidic medium. Thus, the compound 1 has excellent efficacy in catalyzing HER and OER in acidic as well as alkaline medium, which is ascribed to its distinctive 3D architecture.

A New Co(II)-coordination Polymer: Fluorescence Performances, Loaded with Paclitaxel-hydrogel on Breast Cancer and Molecular Docking Study

In the current context of the increasing incidence of breast cancer, we aim to develop an efficient drug carrier for breast cancer by constructing an innovative complex consisting of a metal-organic framework (MOF) and a hydrogel. The aim of this initiative is to provide new ideas and tools for breast cancer treatment strategies through scientific research, so as to address the current challenges in breast cancer treatment. In the present study, by employment of a new Co(II)-based coordination polymer with the chemical formula of [Co(H2O)(CH3OH)L]n (1) (H2L = 5-(1 H-tetrazol-5-yl)nicotinic acid) was solvothermally synthesized by reaction of Co(NO3)2·6H2O a mixed solvent of MeOH and water. The characteristics of ligand-based absorption and emission, as unveiled by ultraviolet and fluorescence spectroscopy tests, offer insights into the distinctive electronic transitions and structural features originating from the ligand in compound 1. Using natural polysaccharide hyaluronic acid (HA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) as raw materials, HA/CMCS hydrogels were successfully prepared by chemical method and their internal morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Using paclitaxel as a drug model, we further designed and synthesized a novel metal gel particle-loaded paclitaxel drug and evaluated its inhibitory effect on breast cancer cells. Finally, the hypothesized interactions between the complex and the receptor have been confirmed through molecular docking simulation, and multiple polar interactions have been verified, which further proves the potential anti-cancer capability and excellent bioactivity. Based on this, this composite material prepared from a novel Co(II)-coordinated polymer with paclitaxel hydrogel could provide a useful pathway for the identification and treatment of breast cancer.

Highly Specific Sulfadiazine Detection Using a Two-Dimensional Europium-Organic Coordination Polymer

Sulfadiazine (SFZ) is an inexpensive large-consumption antibiotic used for treat bacterial infections but an excess of residues in food can be harmful. Fast and specific luminescence detection of SFZ is highly challenging because of the interference of structurally similar antibiotics. In this work, we develop a two-dimensional europium-organic coordination polymer with excellent luminescence and water stability for highly specific detection of SFZ in the range of 0-0.2 mM. Structural analysis shows that the high stability of coordination polymer is due to the high coordination number of europium ion and the special chelating coordination structure of ligand. The experiment results revealed that the high selectivity and effectively luminescence quenched behaviour of coordination polymer toward SFZ is caused by highly efficient inner filter effect.

A Novel Zn(II) Coordination Polymer: Fluorescence Performances, Molecular Docking and Loaded with Bleomycin-Hydrogels on Hemangiomas

In this study, we successfully synthesized an innovative 1D-Zn(II) coordination polymer, denoted as [Zn(L)(H2O)2]n, employing the Schiff base {4-[(2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzylidene)-amino]-benzoic acid} (H2L). The Schiff base was obtained through the reaction of 4-aminobenzoic acid and o-vanillin under slow volatilization conditions. The resulting compound exhibits remarkable green fluorescence emission properties, indicating its potential as a novel fluorescent and sensing material. Hydrogels based on hyaluronic acid (HA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), denoted as HA/CMCS hydrogels, were synthesized using a chemical method. Additionally, we utilized bleomycin as a model drug to synthesize a novel bleomycin metal gel and assessed its anti-hemangioma activity. Molecular docking simulations revealed that the Zn complex can form stable bonds with the key target, involving the methoxy and carboxyl groups on the Zn complex.

Utilizing Ni(II) complex for metal drug-gel particles in cervical cancer treatment and designing novel drugs through machine learning methods

In the present study, a novel coordination polymer (CP) based on Ni(II), namely, [Ni(L)(D-CAM)(H2O)]n (1) (H2D-CAM = (1R,3S)-1,2,2-trimethylcyclopentane-1,3-dicarboxylic acid and L = 3,6-bis(benzimidazol-1-yl)pyridazine), has been produced successfully through applying a mixed ligand synthesis method via reacting Ni(NO3)2·6H2O with 3,6-bis(benzimidazol-1-yl)pyridazine ligand in the presence of a carboxylic acid co-ligand. Hyaluronic acid (HA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) are representatives of natural polysaccharides and have good biocompatibility. Based on the chemical synthesis method, HA/CMCS hydrogel was successfully prepared. SEM showed that the lyophilized gel presented a typical macroporous structure with three-dimensional connected pores, which had unique advantages as a drug carrier. Using paclitaxel as a drug model, we further synthesized a novel paclitaxel-loaded metal gel and evaluated its therapeutic effect on cervical cancer. Finally, novel drugs from the reinforcement learning simulation are suggested to have better biological activity against ovarian cancer due to low affinity energy and stronger interaction strength towards the protein receptor.

Synthesis, structure, theoretical calculation and antibacterial property of two novel Zn(II)/Ni(II) compounds based on 3, 5-dichlorosalicylaldehyde thiocarbamide ligand

Two new compounds namely [Zn(L1)phen]31 and Ni(L1)phen(MeOH) 2 (L1 = 3, 5-dichlorosalicylaldehyde thiosemicarbazone) were synthesized by the slow evaporation method at room temperature. The structure of ligand L1 was determined using 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis revealed that compounds 1-2 can form 3D supramolecular network structures through π···π stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions. The DFT calculation shows that the coordination of ligand and metal is in good agreement with the experimental results. Hirshfeld surface analysis revealed that H…H and Cl…H interactions were the predominant interactions in compounds 1-2. Energy framework analysis indicated that dispersion energy played a dominant role in the energy composition of compounds 1-2. The inhibitory effects of compounds 1-2 against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) were tested using the paper disk diffusion method (1: E. coli: 18 mm, MRSA: 17 mm, 2: E. coli: 15 mm, MRSA: 16 mm). Ion releasing experiments were conducted to assess the ion release capacity of compounds 1-2 (Zn2+, 4 days, 38.33 µg/mL; Ni2+, 4 days, 29.12 µg/mL). Molecular docking demonstrated the interaction modes of compounds 1-2 with UDP-N-acetylenolpyruvoylglucosamine reductase (MurB) and dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) in bacteria, involving hydrophobic, stacking, hydrogen bonding and halogen bonding interactions. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bacteria under the presence of compounds 1-2 were evaluated using a fluorescent dye known as dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA). Potential antibacterial mechanisms of compounds 1-2 were proposed.

A new Cd(II) Complex: Fluorescence Performances, Loading with Budesonide-hydrogels on Pediatric Asthma and Molecular Docking

By applying the phosphonic acid ligand to the solvothermal reaction of nitrobenzylphosphonic acid (H2L) with Cd(NO3)2·4H2O in a mixed solvent of water and DMF, a novel Cd(II)-based coordination polymer, {[Cd(L)(H2O)2](H2O)}n (1), was successfully synthesized in this study. The excellent fluorescence performance of complex 1 was confirmed through fluorescence spectroscopy testing, and the obtained CIE standard coordinates (0.1599, 0.0786) positioned it in the blue fluorescence region. Transparent hyaluronic acid/carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogels were prepared using chemical synthesis, and their internal microstructure was observed. Using budesonide as a drug model, a new budesonide metal gel was prepared, and its therapeutic efficacy in treating pediatric asthma was evaluated. Molecular docking simulations indicated that the Cd complex formed three hydrogen bonding interactions with the target protein through its nitro group, revealing the potential origin of its biological activity.

A viologen-derived luminescent material exhibiting photochromism, photocontrolled luminescence and selective detection of Cr2O72- in aqueous solution

Stable viologen-derived multifunctional smart materials exhibit widespread practical applications in many areas. In this study, a viologen-derived material with 4-fold interpenetrating diamondoid network, {[Cd(1,4-ndc)(cpbpy)]·2H2O}n, was successfully constructed based on asymmetrical N-(3-carboxyphenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium (cpbpy) and 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (1,4-H2ndc). The compound shows reversible photochromic behavior under a xenon lamp, which are proved by UV-vis spectra and EPR characterizations. Moreover, the compound with good photoluminescence properties displays photocontrolled luminescence quenching behaviors. Owing to its good water stability, the compound is then applied in luminescence sensing for the detection of Cr2O72- in aqueous solution. The corresponding luminescence quenching constant for Cr2O72- is KSV = 4.33 × 104 M-1, and the detection limit is 3.66 μM. Systematic investigations on the luminescence quenching mechanism suggest that the inner filter effect resulted in the selective detection of Cr2O72-. This study provides inspiration for the design and synthesis of target luminescent crystalline materials with rigid and asymmetric viologen-derived ligands.

Co(II) Metal-Organic Complex: Fluorescence Performances and Loaded With Drug Vitamin B2 Hydrogels Against Recurrent Oral Ulcers

A new coordination polymer (CP) based on Co(II), namely, {[Co3(L)2(4,4'-bipy)(DMA)2]·H2O}n (1) has been synthesized after reacting Co(NO3)2·6H2O with H3L ligand in the existence of N-donor ligand 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bipy), via utilizing a flexible tricarboxylic acid ligand 5-((formic acid-3-sulfur)methyl)isophthalic acid (H3L) with -S-CH2- joint. Additionally, the excellent blue fluorescence properties of CP 1 were confirmed through fluorescence spectroscopy compared to the original ligand. Using natural polysaccharide hyaluronic acid (HA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) as raw materials, HA/CMCS hydrogel was prepared by chemical synthesis method. Taking vitamin B2 as the drug model, we designed and synthesized gels loaded with vitamin B2 metal framework and evaluated their efficacy in the treatment of recurrent oral ulcer.

Stable Co(II)-based coordination polymer as fluorescence sensor for the discriminative sensing of biomarker methylmalonic acid

Three novel Co-based coordination polymers including {[Co(L)(μ3-O)1/3]2}n (1), {[Co(L)(bimb)]}n (2) and {[Co(L)(bimmb)1/2]}n (3) (H2L = 2,6-di(4-carboxylphenyl)-4-(4-(triazol-1-ylphenyl))pyridine), bimb = 1,4-bis(lmidazol) butane, bimmb = 1,4-bis(imidazole-1-ylmethyl)benzene) were successfully prepared under solvothermal conditions and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that 1 possesses a 3D architecture composed of a trinuclear cluster [Co3N3(CO2)6(μ3-O)], 2 exhibits a 2D new topological framework with the point symbol (84·122)(8)2, whereas 3 shows a unique six-fold interpenetrated 3D framework with a (63·82·10)2(63)2(8) topology. Impressively, all of them can function as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor for the biomarker methylmalonic acid (MMA) via fluorescence quenching. The low detection limit, reusability and high anti-interference performance together make 1-3 become promising sensors for the practical detection of MMA. Furthermore, the successful application of MMA detection in urine sample was demonstrated, which may be a potential candidate for the further development of clinical diagnostic tools.

Preparation of pH-sensitive composite polyethersulfone membranes embedded by Ag(I) coordination polymer for the removal of cationic and anionic dyes

A pH-sensitive polyethersulfone (PES) membrane was prepared with the aid of newly synthesized Ag(I) coordination polymer (Ag(I)-CP) particles. Indicating obvious adsorptive property toward dyes, the Ag(I)-based metalorganic framework (MOF) was selected to be used as an additive to improve the dye selectivity of PES membranes for both cationic and anionic dyes. The performance examination and characterization of prepared membranes indicated the influence of Ag(I)-CP in PES membrane improvement. The effect of feed pH approved the membrane response to pH changes in dye removal results. By adjusting feed pH based on pHpzc of Ag(I)-CP, it is possible to remove both anionic and cationic dyes (97% of acid orange 7 (AO) & and 100% of methylene blue (MB)) from the effluent along with an enhanced permeated flux. The results offered a synergism in embedding Ag(I)-CP in PES membrane in dye removal efficiency. The additive particles can be applied with their natural size (200-300 nm) without severe influence on the uniformity of the membrane morphology if the optimum Ag(I)-CP content is considered.

Thermal/Redox-triggered release of pyrazinic functional molecules by coordination polymers with luminescence monitoring ability

Storage of volatile active molecules, along with the prolongation of their specific functions, requires the use of regulatable carriers. Pyrazine derivatives are highly volatile compounds with a broad application owing to their flavoring, pharmaceutical, antimicrobial, antiseptic, and insecticidal properties. In this study, pyrazines were stored by coordinating them with cuprous iodide to easily generate a series of luminescent coordination polymer (CP)-based carriers. The CPs could respond to thermal-redox stimuli and manipulate pyrazine release by breaking the labile Cu-N bonds when triggered by the two stimuli. Moreover, the release process could be visualized by decreased luminescence caused by the gradual decomposition of CP structures. The loading efficiencies ranged from 31% to 38%, and the controlled release behaviors accord with the zero-order kinetics. This work is the first to prove that CPs could function as dual stimuli-mediated delivery systems, which hold the potential to control the release and strengthen the usability of functional molecules.

Electrospun nanofiber-based indicatorpaper sensing platform for fluorescence and visualization detection of norfloxacin

Norfloxacin (NOR) residues in water pose a serious threat to human health via the food chain, necessitating the development of a rapid on-site antibiotic detection technique. In this work, we utilize electrostatic spinning technology that combines polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers and adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-rare earth metal Tb3+ complexes (ATP/Tb) to construct a new ternary film-based sensor for sensitive, quick, and convenient field testing of NOR in water. The operating mechanism is that the ternary system produces gradually enhanced bright green fluorescence at increasing concentrations of NOR. The unique fluorescence property of the ternary systems is attributed to the use of ATP, rather than the commonly used adenosine monophosphate (AMP), to coordinate with Tb3+, which avoided the possible fluorescence quenching from competitive water binding. Benefiting from the PAN nanofiber's superior stability, acid, and alkali resistance, and flexibility as support, the ternary system exhibited a good linear response to NOR in a wide dynamic range of 0.04-30 μM at the detection limit of 16 nM. Additionally, the combination of a smartphone color recognition app allows for quick on-scene NOR detection. This film sensing strategy is instructive for the development of smart and portable sensing platforms for real-time detection of analytes such as antibiotics, pesticide residues, and hazardous materials in water bodies.

3D ZnII-Based coordination polymer: Synthesis, structure and fluorescent sensing property for nitroaromatic compounds

A water-stable Zn^II-based coordination polymer (CP) with excellent photophysical behavior, namely [Zn₂L(atez)(H₂O)₂] (compound 1; H₃L = 4-(2',3'-dicarboxylphenoxy); atez = 5-aminotetrazole), was successfully prepared by the solvothermal reaction of Zn ions with a π-conjugated and semi-rigid multicarboxylate ligand H₃L in the presence of N-containing linker atez. Compound 1 displays a hierarchically pillared three-dimensional (3D) (3,4,5)-connected (4·6²) (4²·6⁴) (4³·6⁴·8³) net which is based on two-dimensional (2D) multicarboxylate- Zn^II layers strutted by the atez ligands. Sensing investigations of compound 1 reveal that this material can selectively and sensitively detect nitroaromatic compounds in water suspension through fluorescence quenching effect. In particular, it is worth noting that it shows highly specific detection of nitrobenzene (NB) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) with remarkable quenching constants (K_SV = 7.5 × 10⁴ M^-1 for NB and K_SV = 1.9 × 10⁵ M^-1 for TNP) and low limit of detection (LOD = 0.93 μM for NB and LOD = 0.36 μM for TNP). Investigations reveal that the probable mechanisms for such sensing processes are the concurrent presence of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) as well as photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between the CP and nitroaromatic molecules. This work not only offers an effective route to improve the application of fluorescent CPs but also provide one novel probable fluorescence probe for nitroaromatic compounds.

Aqueous coordination polymer complexes: From colloidal assemblies to bulk materials

1-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers refer to the macromolecules that have metal ions incorporated in their pendent groups or main chain through metal-binding ligand groups. They have intrinsic advantages over traditional polymers to regulate the polymer structures and functions owing to the nature of the metal-ligand bond. Consequently, they have great potential for the development of smart and functional structures and materials and therapeutic agents. Water-soluble 1D coordination polymers and assemblies are an important subtype of coordination polymers with distinctive interests for demanding applications in aqueous systems, such as biological and medical applications. This review highlights the recent progress and research achievements in the design and use of water-soluble 1D coordination polymers and assemblies. The overview covers the design and structure control of 1D coordination polymers, their colloidal assemblies, including nanoparticles, nanofibers, micelles and vesicles, and fabricated bulk materials such as membraneless liquid condensates, security ink, hydrogel actuators, and smart fabrics. Finally, we discuss the potential applications of several of these coordination polymeric structures and materials and give an outlook on the field of aqueous coordination polymers.

Peroxidase-like oxidative activity of cobalt-based 1D coordination polymer; experimental and theoretical investigations

CONTEXT

The present work describes the synthesis, structural characterization, and catalytic activity of a Co(II)-based one-dimensional coordination polymer (CP1). To validate the chemotherapeutic potential of CP1, in vitro DNA binding assessment was carried out by employing multispectroscopic techniques. Moreover, the catalytic activity of CP1 was also ascertained during the oxidative conversion of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to diaminophenazine (DAP) under aerobic conditions.

METHODS

The molecular structure of CP1 was solved with the olex2.solve structure solution program using charge flipping and refined with the olex2.refine refinement package by using Gauss-Newton minimization. The DFT studies were performed by utilizing ORCA Program Version 4.1.1 to calculate the electronic and chemical properties of CP1 by calculating the HOMO-LUMO energy gap. All calculations were carried out at B3LYP hybrid functional using def2-TZVP as the basis set. Contour plots of various FMOs were visualized by using Avogadro software. Hirshfeld surface analysis was carried out by Crystal explorer Program 17.5.27 to examine the various non-covalent interactions which are crucial for the stability of crystal lattice. In addition, molecular docking studies of CP1 with DNA were performed by using AutoDock Vina software and AutoDock tools (version 1.5.6). Discovery studio 3.5 Client 2020 was used for visualization of the docked pose and binding interactions of CP1 with ct-DNA.

Rational design of polymeric nanozymes with robust catalytic performance via copper-ligand coordination

Incorporating copper (Cu) ions into polymeric particles can be a straightforward strategy for mimicking copper enzymes, but it is challenging to simultaneously control the structure of the nanozyme and of the active sites. In this report, we present a novel bis-ligand (L₂) containing bipyridine groups connected by a tetra-ethylene oxide (4EO) spacer. In phosphate buffer the Cu-L₂ mixture forms coordination complexes that (at proper composition) can bind polyacrylic acid (PAA) to produce catalytically active polymeric nanoparticles with well-defined structure and size, which we refer to as 'nanozymes'. Manipulating the L₂/Cu mixing ratio and using phosphate as a co-binding motif, cooperative copper centres are realized that exhibit promoted oxidation activity. The structure and activity of the so-designed nanozymes remain stable upon increasing temperature and over multiple cycles of application. Increasing ionic strength causes enhanced activity, a response also seen for natural tyrosinase. By means of our rational design we obtain nanozymes with optimized structure and active sites that in several respects outperform natural enzymes. This approach therefore demonstrates a novel strategy for developing functional nanozymes, which may well stimulate the application of this class of catalysts.

Multifunctional Cd-CP for fluorescence sensing of Cr(VI), MnO4-, acetylacetone and ascorbic acid in aqueous solutions

The development of multifunctional fluorescent chemosensors for the detection of multiple targets remains challenging but of great importance. In this paper, one novel coordination polymer (CP), denoted as [Cd₂(edda)(phen)₂]∙H₂O (compound 1, H₄edda = 5,5' (ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy)) diisophthalic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) is successfully designed and prepared under hydrothermal conditions. Structural analysis indicates that compound 1 possesses a one-dimensional (1D) double chain structure, then self-assembles into a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular framework via π…π interactions between phen molecules. Interestingly, compound 1 is found to be tolerant in wide range of acidic to alkaline aqueous solutions (pH = 2-13). Fluorescent spectral investigations reveal that compound 1 exhibits highly selective and sensitive fluorescence responses toward MnO₄^-, Cr(VI) ions, acetylacetone (acac) and ascorbic acid (AA) by fluorescence quenching in the aqueous phase. The detection limits are in the very low range, reaching μM level for the detection of MnO₄^-, Cr(VI) ions, nM for AA and ppm for acac detection. The distinguished multi-responsive performance suggests compound 1 to be a potential multifunctional probe. Furthermore, the possible quenching mechanisms have also been systematically investigated in this work.

Photopolymerization-Driven Macroscopic Mechanical Motions of a Composite Film Containing a Vinyl Coordination Polymer

We report a unique vinyl coordination polymer (CP), [Zn(4-Fb)2(tkpvb)] n (1, 4-HFb = 4-fluorobenzoic acid, tkpvb = 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-pyridylvinyl)benzene) that undergoes a rare photopolymerization reaction to form a two-dimensional CP integrated with a one-dimensional linear organic polymer. Upon light irradiation at different wavelengths, 1 exhibits an unprecedented phenomenon of photoinduced nonlinear lattice expansion. 1 can be uniformly dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form the composite film of 1-PVA. When this film is exposed to UV light, internal minute stresses within crystallites are released by lattice expansion, resulting in a variety of photopolymerization-driven macroscopic mechanical motions. The findings provide new insights into the conversion of small lattice expansions of CPs into macroscopic mechanical motions based on photopolymerization reactions, which can promote the development of CPs-based smart photoactuators in the burgeoning field of microrobotics.

A water-stable dual-responsive Cd-CP for fluorometric recognition of hypochlorite and acetylacetone in aqueous media

One novel cadmium(II)-coordination polymer [Cd₃L₂(datrz)(H₂O)₃] (CP 1) is controllably synthesized by surmising the astute combination of semi-rigid tricarboxylate acid 4-(2',3'-dicarboxylphenoxy) benzoic acid (H₃L) and auxiliary ligand 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole (datrz). Structure analysis shows that CP 1 has a two-dimensional (2D) layer structure with a 5-nodal (4³) (4⁴·6²) (4⁵·6⁴·8) (4⁵·6) (4⁷·6⁶·8²) topology. Further investigations reveal that CP 1 shows superordinary water stability and good thermal stability. The fluorescent explorations suggest that the as-synthesized CP 1 could emit blue light centered at 485 nm, attributing to ligand-based emission. In terms of sensing investigations, CP 1 could act as a fluorescent sensor for detecting hypochlorite (ClO^-) and acetylacetone (acac) through fluorescence turn-off process in aqueous solution, and the detection limit could reach 0.18 μM and 0.056 μM, respectively. Further research reveals that it is more likely the N-H···O-Cl hydrogen bonds between -NH₂ groups of the triazole ligands and O atoms of ClO^- plays the key role in the system, which may serve as a bridge for the energy transfer, leading to fluorescence quenching of the chemosensor. While the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) combined with inner filter effect (IFT) should be responsible for the turn-off fluorescence of CP 1 triggered by acac.

Detection of anthrax biomarker and metallic ions in aqueous media using spherical-shaped lanthanide infinite coordination polymers

We report a lanthanide-based infinite coordination polymer (ICP) system synthesized using pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylic acid as linker, malonic acid as coordination modulator and water as solvent. The precursors self-assembly into microspherical particles, which are water-stable and exhibit excellent dispersibility. Bimetallic samples based on Tb³⁺ doped with Eu³⁺ were investigated as ratiometric dipicolinic acid (DPA) sensors, which is a biomarker for Bacillus anthracis spores. Along with the calibration curves, a detection in a real sample extracted from Bacillus subtilis (model organism) was performed. The samples proved to be highly sensitive and selective for ratiometric DPA detection. In a secondary study, the monometallic sample containing only Tb³⁺ was also investigated as a sensor for ionic species in aqueous media. The Cr³⁺, Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺, and Cr₂O₇^2- ionic species could be detected in water by luminescence quenching mechanism. Therefore, we found that the reported ICP system can be judiciously constructed in order to act as a multimodal probe for several chemical species.

Coordination polymer nanoprobe integrated carbon dot and phenol red for turn-on fluorescence detection of urease activity

The potential of coordination polymers (CPs) as a host of integrating multiple guest species to construct a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) nanoprobe was demonstrated. The ZnCPs built from zinc(II) and adenine was employed as a model of CPs to integrate carbon dot (CD) and phenol red (PR) for producing the FRET nanoprobe (CD/PR@ZnCPs). Benefiting from the confinement effect of ZnCPs, the integrated CD and PR can be brought in close proximity to favor the occurrence of FRET process from CD to PR, which leads to the quenching of CD fluorescence. However, the FRET process was disrupted upon the red-shift of PR absorption from 428 to 562 nm in alkaline medium, and consequently switches on the fluorescence of CD/PR@ZnCPs. Based on this finding, by utilizing urease to hydrolyze urea and mediate medium pH, a turn-on fluorescent method was established for the detection of urease activity. This fluorescent method has a linear response that covers 5 to 150 U/L urease with a detection limit of 0.74 U/L and exhibits an excellent selectivity over other enzymes. The successful determination of urease in saliva samples demonstrates the applicability of the fluorescent nanoprobe in complex biological matrix.

Effective adsorption and catalytic reduction of nitrophenols by amino-rich Cu(I)-I coordination polymer

Nitrophenols are identified as the priority organic pollutants due to the chemical stability, water solubility, persistence, and toxicity to human health and the environment. Hence, removal of nitrophenols from waste water is vitally essential. In this study, amino-rich coordination polymer Cu₂I₂(MA)₂ (MA = melamine) has been applied for efficient adsorption and catalytic reduction of nitrophenols, like 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), 2, 4-dinitrophenol (DNP) and 2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol (TNP). The effect of various parameters like contact time, initial concentrations, pH, and temperature on adsorption were investigated. The adsorption of nitrophenols fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherms model well. The maximum adsorption capacities were 285.71, 232.02, and 131.57 mg g^-1 for 4-NP, DNP, and TNP when initial concentrations were 50 mg L^-1 at 293.15 K, respectively. The adsorption of nitrophenols is a spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-driven process. The reduction reaction followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the kinetic rate constants were 0.4413, 0.3167, and 0.17538 min^-1 for 4-NP, DNP, and TNP, respectively. The effect of initial nitrophenols concentration, anions, and temperature on reduction process was investigated. The mechanism of adsorption and catalytic reduction of Cu₂I₂(MA)₂ was studied. The results demonstrated that Cu₂I₂(MA)₂ exhibits excellent adsorption and catalytic activity to remove nitrophenols.

In Situ Cutting of Ammonium Perchlorate Particles by Co-Bipy "scalpel" for High Efficiency Thermal Decomposition

Burning rate of solid propellants can be effectively improved by adding catalysts and using smaller size ammonium perchlorate (AP). Although few reports, the exploration of changing the size of AP primary particles by catalysts is of great significance for improving combustion performance. Here, taking Co-bipy as an example, the potential advantages of such materials as AP decomposition catalysts are reported. Due to the existence of NO3 - combined with oxygen rich environment provided by AP, the structural self-transformation from micronrods to nanoparticles can be quickly realized during the heating process. More importantly, when Co-bipy decomposes, it can play the role of "scalpel" and in situ cut AP particles. Results show that high-temperature decomposition of Co-bipy/AP occurs at 305.8 °C, which is 137.5 °C lower than that of pure AP. Catalytic mechanism is discussed by in situ IR and TG-IR, CoO can effectively increase the content of reactive oxygen species and weaken the N-H bond, realizing the rapid oxidation of NH3 . Eventually, the behavior of Co-bipy cutting AP particles is tested. This interesting catalyst structure self-transformation behavior can not only realize the influence on AP, but also perform a positive function in the combustion process of solid propellants, such as opening the adhesive AP interface.

Synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial property in vitro of supramolecular coordination polymers bearing brominated Schiff base ligand

In this study, two supramolecular coordination polymers of Co(II) and Zn(II) based on brominated Schiff base (E)-4-bromo-2-((quinolin-6-ylimino)methyl)phenol (HL) were synthesized and characterized by using elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the crystal structures of HL, CoL₂ (І) and ZnL₂ (II) were determined by single crystal X-ray analysis. It was revealed that the bromine-related interaction played important role in the self-assembly of HL supramolecular network. The crystal structural investigations revealed that І and II were isomorphous with the same geometry around the metal atom and similar structural feature. The stable four-membered chelate structure resulted from coordination between the metal(II) ion and deprotonated bidentate ligand. And supramolecular coordination polymers of І and II formed diverse architecture through multiple hydrogen bondings, π···π interactions and halogen-related interactions. Antimicrobial activities of polymers were tested toward four bacteria and five phytopathogenic fungi. І and II showed higher activities toward the tested microorganisms than HL. Furthermore, the photoluminescence results indicated that HL and II accompanied with better fluorescence properties in the ultraviolet region.

Mercury removal efficiency of disulfide- and thiol-functionalized lanthanide coordination polymers

To compare efficiency of disulfide and thiol groups in removing mercury from aqueous medium without noteworthy influence from structural differences, a series of new [Ln^III(dtba)_1.5(H₂O)₂] (Ln^III = Eu^III (I), Gd^III (II) and Tb^III (III), H₂dtba = 4,4'-dithiobenzoic acid) were synthesized and characterized. The single crystal structure of I was elucidated and is described. Reaction of II with hydrazine gave II^SH containing disulfide and thiol groups. Experimental data confirmed the preserved framework structure and the co-existing of disulfide and thiol groups in II^SH. Robustness of II and II^SH over a wide range of pH (2-10) was confirmed and their mercury removal performances at different pH were evaluated in terms of removal efficiencies (%R), equilibrium uptake capacities (q_e) and distribution constant (K_d). The dependence of these parameters on pH is reported. The best values of %R, q_e and K_d could be achieved at pH 10 at which surfaces of the adsorbents were negatively charged; 86%R, 429 mg g^-1, and 6.04 × 10³ mL g^-1 (II), and 98%R, 490 mg g^-1 and 5.08 × 10⁴ mL g^-1 (II^SH). At pH 7, influences of the initial concentration of mercury on performances of the adsorbents as well as the adsorption isotherms and kinetics were examined from which the better performance of II^SH has been concluded. The characterization of the adsorptions by the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic as well as their excellent consistency with the experimental data are included. At neutral pH, selectivity to the adsorption of mercury and tolerance to common anions were illustrated. The better affinity between mercury and thiol group and therefore its contribution to the better performance of II^SH was then ascertained by a computational study.

Iron-doped cerium/nucleotide coordination polymer as highly efficient peroxidase mimic for colorimetric detection of fluoride ion

A new coordination polymer (Ce-Fe-GMP) with excellent catalytic activity was prepared by a facile route, which was further applied to the detection of F^- with high sensitivity and selectivity. The simple doping of Fe³⁺ into the coordination network can easily modulate the mixing ratio of Ce³⁺ and Ce⁴⁺ in the presence of H₂O₂, which can extremely improve the catalytic ability of Ce-Fe-GMP. Based on the synergistic effect, the Ce-Fe-GMP with dual-active sites shows better peroxidase activity than that of Ce-GMP. In addition, we found that F^- can inhibit the peroxidase activity of Ce-Fe-GMP because of the coordination structure fragmentation and the regulation of Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ ratio. Therefore, different concentrations of F^- can be detected by the colorimetric reaction based on this mechanism. The absorption at 652 nm displays a good linear relationship versus the concentration of F^- over the range 2.0 to 100.0 μM. Furthermore, F^- in real mineral-mixed samples can be measured with satisfactory results. The colorimetric strategy based on the peroxidase activity of Ce-Fe-GMP is simple and low-cost, which shows the potential applications in the field of on-site environment measurement.

A green and highly efficient method to deliver hydrophilic polyphenols of Salvia miltiorrhiza and Carthamus tinctorius for enhanced anti-atherosclerotic effect via metal-phenolic network

Salvia miltiorrhiza and Carthamus tinctorius are traditional Chinese medicines that have been widely used for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. Salvianic acid A (SAA), salvianic acid B (SAB), protocatechuic aldehyde (PCA) and hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA) are the major hydrophilic polyphenols of Salvia miltiorrhiza and Carthamus tinctorius, all of which have been documented as active compounds for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis (AS). However, high aqueous solubility, low permeability and poor stability properties of the four hydrophilic polyphenols might influence their bioavailability and thus hinder their clinical potential. In this work, we introduced a green and highly efficient method for the efficient delivery of the four hydrophilic components via metal-phenolic network. The four coordination polymers of SAA, SAB, PCA and HSYA were successfully fabricated, and confirmed by UV-vis, FTIR, XPS, ICP-MS and dynamic light scattering analysis. We found all of them displayed potent antioxidant activity, good biocompatibility and stability. Impressively, the four coordination polymers showed remarkably enhanced anti-atherosclerotic effect compared with free drugs. Collectively, metal-phenolic network-based coordination polymer might show great potential for safe and efficient delivery of the hydrophilic polyphenols of Salvia miltiorrhiza and Carthamus tinctorius for anti-atherosclerotic therapy.

Improvement of two Mn2+ coordination polymers on cognitive function of aged rats after anesthesia

Two Mn²⁺ coordination polymers (CPs) with the scientific terms of {[Mn(TTPA)·(H₂O)₂]·H₂O}_n (1) and {[Mn(TTPA)·(H₂TTPA)]·2DMSO}_n (2) were favorably created on the basis of multidentate linking organic ligand 2,5-bis-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-terephthalic acid (H₂TTPA) in the conditions of solvent-presupposed thermal reaction. To measure the influence of two Mn²⁺ coordination polymers with novel structures, the ELISA assay and real-time RT-PCR assay were conducted in this present research. First of all, the ELISA assay was conducted to measure the content of inflammatory cytokines released into the hippocampal tissue. In addition to this, the relative expression of the TAU protein in the brain was further determined with real-time RT-PCR assay.

A new Cu(II)-containing coordination polymer: protective effect and mechanism exploration on elderly osteoporotic hip fractures via regulating the wnt signaling pathway

Elderly osteoporosis hip fracture has drawn the attention of the researcher. The coordination polymer was now widely used in clinic because their multiple structures and biological activities. In this present research, the new coordination polymer was designed and synthesized and their application values on elderly osteoporosis hip were evaluated. The reaction between Cu(II) salt and 4,4'-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)methylene-bis(benzoic acid) (H2tzmb), an aromatase inhibitor letrozole derivative with the aid of the organic linker 4,4-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy) affords a new coordination polymer based on Cu(II) ions as nodes of {[Cu2(tzmb)2(4,4'-bpy) (μ2-H2O)2(DMA) (H2O)2]·10DMA}n (1). The complex 1 gained is totally investigated with the powder X-ray diffraction study, thermogravimetric analyses, the diffraction of single-crystal X-ray, elemental analysis as well as the Fourier transform infrared spectrometer spectra. The osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cell was measured with the western blotting assay through determining the Runx2 expression. The wnt signaling pathway relative expression in mesenchymal stem cell was detected through the determination of real-time RT-PCR. The cytotoxicity of the compound on the mesenchymal stem cell was determined with CCK-8 assay. The result of single-crystal X-ray diffraction reflects that the complex 1 has crystallized in space group R-3c of trigonal system and exhibits a three-dimensional skeleton architecture on the bases of the SBUs {Cu(tzmb)(μ2-H2O)}n. The western blotting assay results revealed that this compound could significantly promote the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cell. Besides, the activation of wnt signaling pathway in mesenchymal stem cell was also increased by the compound exposure. Finally, it can be summed up that this compound has excellent application values on the elderly osteoporotic hip fractures treatment by increasing the activation of wnt signaling pathway in mesenchymal stem cell. The results of the CCK-8 assay indicated that the compound has no cytotoxicity on the mesenchymal stem cell. The molecular docking simulation results have identified that only the carboxyl group on the Cu complex exhibits the activity for the hydrogen bond formation, however, the pyridine ring does not have such activity, instead, the pyridine ring only acts as the ligand that binds to the Cu ion. This Cu(II) coordination polymer has excellent application values on the elderly osteoporotic hip fractures treatment by increasing the activation of wnt signaling pathway in mesenchymal stem cell.

Therapeutic effect of two transition metal coordination polymers on ovarian cancer by regulating the expression of estrogen receptor

In the present study, via using a ligand featuring oxalamide groups N,N′-bis(4-phthalic acid) (H₄L), two new Cu(II) and Co(II)-containing coordination polymers with the chemical formulae of [Cu₂L(H₂O)₄]_n (1) and [Co(H₂L)(H₂O)₂]_n (2) have been successfully prepared via reaction of the corresponding metal salts with the H₄L ligand. The as-prepared two coordination polymers have been studied via the single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. Their therapeutic effect and mechanism for ovarian cancer was evaluated and explored. Firstly, the inhibitory activity of the new compounds on the proliferation of the ovarian cancer was measured with CCK-8 assay after compound treatment. Besides, the relative expression of the estrogen receptor on the ovarian cancer cells after compound treatment was also determined with real-time RT-PCR assay.

Simultaneous electrochemical detection of gallic acid and uric acid with p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-based coordination polymer/mesoporous carbon composite

Design and synthesis of an efficient electrocatalyst for simultaneous determination of gallic acid (GA) and uric acid (UA) is vital in the biological field. Herein, we synthesized a new p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-based metal-organic electrocatalyst (Mn-L@MC) by combining Mn-L (H₄L = tetrakis[(2-biphenylcarboxyl)oxy]-p-tertbutylcalix[4]arene) and mesoporous carbon (MC) via a simple mechanical grinding method. Synergistic effect between Mn-L and MC made the Mn-L@MC composite behave high-efficiency electrocatalytic performance toward simultaneous detection of GA and UA. Under optimal experimental conditions, the Mn-L@MC-2 electrode material featured relatively wide linear range (0.5-90 µM) for the two analytes, and low determination limits of 0.043 µM for GA and 0.059 µM for UA. The remarkable electrochemical detection behavior of Mn-L@MC-2 electrode material toward GA and UA are comparable to those known sensors containing precious metals. The Mn-L@MC-2 material exhibited high selectivity, superior reproducibility, and acceptable stability during the determination of the two analytes. The sensor was assembled to simultaneously detect GA and UA in healthy human urine with satisfactory recoveries.

The detection of selectivity and sensitivity towards TNP by a new Zn(II)-coordination polymer as luminescent sensor in aqueous solution

Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) can lead to various environmental pollution healh problems. In order to effectively recognize and sense NACs, a novel coordination polymers (CPs) with fluorescent characteristic [Zn₃(btc)₂(tpt)(H₂O)₂]·4H₂O (1) (tpt = tris(4-pyridyl)triazine, H₃btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid) has been triumphantly prepared as an fluorescence probe by solvothermal method. 1 possesses remarkable PH stability ranging from 2.0 to 12.0 and is also stable in different pure organic solvents. It should be noted that 1 manifests a fluorescence quenching response against the detection of selectivity and sensitivity towards 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) in aqueous solution. It also makes analysis on the limit of detection towards TNP, which is as low as 0.94 µM compared with most reported CPs sensors for TNP. Therefore, 1 can become a satisfactory sensor for TNP detection with remarkable selectivity, strong anti-interference and favorable recyclability. In addition, the quenching mechanisms were also discussed. It was supposed that the mechanisms of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) as well as resonance energy transfer (RET) might be the main influencing factors.

Dual-mode fluorescence and colorimetric detection of pesticides realized by integrating stimulus-responsive luminescence with oxidase-mimetic activity into cerium-based coordination polymer nanoparticles

The great threat of pesticide residues to the environment and human health has drawn widespread interest to explore approaches for pesticide monitoring. Compared to commonly developed single-signal pesticide assays, multi-mode detection with inherent self-validation and self-correction is expected to offer more reliable and anti-interference results. However, how to realize multi-mode analysis of pesticides still remains challenging. Herein, we propose a dual-mode fluorescence and colorimetric method for pesticide determination by integrating stimulus-responsive luminescence with oxidase-mimetic activity into cerium-based coordination polymer nanoparticles (CPNs(Ⅳ)). The CPNs(Ⅳ) exhibit good oxidase-like activity of catalyzing the colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation to its blue oxide, offering a visible color signal; by employing acid phosphatase (ACP) to hydrolyze ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AAP), the generated ascorbic acid (AA) can chemically reduce the CPNs(Ⅳ) to CPNs(Ⅲ), which exhibit a remarkable fluorescence signal but lose the oxidase-mimicking ability to trigger the TMB chromogenic reaction; when pesticides exist, the enzymatic activity of ACP is restrained and the hydrolysis of AAP to AA is blocked, leading to the recovery of the catalytic TMB chromogenic reaction but the suppression of the fluorescence signal of CPNs(Ⅲ). According to this principle, by taking malathion as a pesticide model, dual-mode 'off-on-off' fluorescence and 'on-off-on' colorimetric detection of the pesticide with good sensitivity was realized. Excellent interference-tolerance and reliability were verified by applying it to analyze the target in real sample matrices. With good performance and practicability, the proposed dual-mode approach shows great potential in the facile and reliable monitoring of pesticide residues.

Tuning CO2 sensing properties of HPTS along with newly synthesized coordination polymers (CPs)

Coordination polymers (CPs), new functional hybrid materials, have received important attention due to their structural features and many different applications such as gas storage, catalysis, energy storage, small molecule adsorption, luminescence, and chemical sensors. In this study, two newly synthesized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs); [Mn₂(µ₄-dmg)-(µ₄-dmg)(µ-bipy)]_n (CP1) and [Mn₂(µ₄-dmg)(µ₄-dmg)(µ-dpeten)]_n (CP2); were used for sensing of gaseous carbon dioxide with a spectrofluorometric method with a dye, 8-hydroxypyrene-1, 3, 6-trisulfonic acid (HPTS) as matrix additive material for the first time. The ion-pair form of the HPTS was used in the polymethyl methacrylate matrix as a thin film form. When the HPTS based sensing slides along with the CPs, resulted in many advances such as high relative signal change and larger linear response range, improved sensor dynamics, and higher sensitivity with respect to the additive-free form. More specifically, in the presence of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), the variation in relative signal intensities of CP1 and CP2 doped HPTS sensing agents were measured as 60 and 40% for the concentration range of 0-10% pCO₂, respectively. The aim of this study is to enhance the CO₂ response of HPTS with doped CPs due to their useful attributes and potential applications containing selective gas absorption.

A novel 3D coordination polymer constructed by dual-ligand for highly sensitive detection of purine metabolite uric acid

Uric acid (UA), as the final product of purine metabolism, exists in urine and serum, which plays an important role in human metabolism, immunity and other functions. The sensitive, efficient, and rapid detection of UA has far-reaching significance in clinical diagnosis and disease prevention. Herein, a novel coordination polymer constructed by dual-ligand was successfully prepared, which exhibited excellent thermal and water stability. The polymer was interlaced by coordination bonds and hydrogen bonds to form an infinitely extended three-dimensional framework, which showed a rare and novel topological structure. The complex selectively recognized UA through significant fluorescence quenching response in the presence of various interferences. The excellent detection sensitivity (the limited detection of 1.2 μM), outstanding anti-interference ability and remarkable recyclability marked the complex to be a promising sensor material towards UA. In addition, the detection mechanism of UA by the complex was investigated in detail by combining density functional theory (DFT) and a variety of other analytical methods.

Coordination Polymers as a Functional Material for the Selective Molecular Recognition of Nitroaromatics and ipso-Hydroxylation of Arylboronic Acids

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of two coordination polymers (CPs), namely; [{Zn(L)(DMF)₄ } ⋅ 2BF₄ ]_α (1) and [{Cd(L)₂ (Cl)₂ } ⋅ 2H₂ O]_α (2) (where L=N² ,N⁶ -di(pyridin-4-yl)naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxamide). Crystal packing of 1 reveals the existence of channels running along the b- and c-axis filled by the ligated DMF and lattice anions, respectively. Whereas, crystal packing of 2 reveals that the metallacycles of each 1D chain are intercalating into the groove of adjacent metallacycles resulting in the stacking of 1D loop-chains to form a sheet-like architecture. In addition, both 1 and 2 were exploited as multifunctional materials for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) as well as a catalyst in the ipso-hydroxylation of aryl/heteroarylboronic acids. Remarkably, 1 and 2 showed high fluorescence stability in an aqueous medium and displayed a maximum 88% and 97% quenching efficiency for 4-NPH, respectively among all the investigated NACs. The mechanistic investigation of NACs recognition suggested that the fluorescence quenching occurred via electron as well as energy transfer process. Furthermore, the ipso-hydroxylation of aryl/heteroarylboronic acids in presence of 1 and 2 gave up to 99% desired product yield within 15 min in our established protocol. In both cases, 1 and 2 are recyclable upto five cycles without any significant loss in their efficiency.

Comprehensive and High-throughput Electrolysis of Water and Urea by 3-5 nm Nickel and Copper Coordination Polymers

Metal-organic coordination polymers (CP) have attracted the scientific attention for electrochemical water oxidation as it has the similar coordination structure like natural photosynthetic coordinated complex. However, the harsh synthesis conditions and bulky nature pose a major challenge in the field of catalysis. Herein, 3-5 nm CP particles synthesized at room temperature using aqueous solutions of Ni²⁺ /Cu²⁺ and 2,5-dihydroxyterepthalic acid as precursor were applied for alkaline water and urea electrolysis. The overpotential required is only 300 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 by Nano-Ni CP for water oxidation, with turnover frequency (TOF) of 21.4 s^-1 which is around 8 times higher than its bulk-counterpart. Overall water and urea splitting were achieved with Nano-Cu (-) ∥ Nano-Ni (+) couple on Ni foam at 1.69 and 1.52 V to achieve 10 mA cm^-2 , respectively. High electrochemical surface area (ECSA), high TOF, and enhanced mass diffusion are found to be the key parameters responsible for the state-of-the-art water and urea splitting performances of nano-CPs as compared to their bulk counterparts.

Fluorescent enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on alkaline phosphatase-responsive coordination polymer composite

The fabrication of alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-responsive coordination polymer (CP) composite is demonstrated for establishing a fluorescent immunoassay. The CP composite (ThT@GMP/Eu) was synthesized by encapsulating thioflavin T (ThT) into the CP host that was composed of europium ion (Eu³⁺) and guanine monophosphate (GMP). The ThT@GMP/Eu composite shows a strong fluorescence in aqueous solution due to the confinement effect of GMP/Eu CPs, which restricts the conformational rotation of ThT. However, upon the addition of ALP, the structure of GMP/Eu CPs was disrupted to release ThT into solution. This results in the quenching of the fluorescence of ThT@GMP/Eu. The fluorescence of ThT@GMP/Eu has a linear response that covers 0.8 to 120 mU/mL ALP with a detection limit of 0.26 mU/mL and exhibits excellent specificity towards ALP against other enzymes. On this basis, inspired by the wide application of ALP as an enzyme label in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), an ALP-based fluorescent immunoassay was further developed for the detection of mouse immunoglobulin G (mIgG). The developed immunoassay displays a linear fluorescent response towards mIgG from 0.8 to 100 ng/mL, and the detection limit is 0.16 ng/mL. The fluorescent immunoassay was successfully applied to the determination of mIgG in serum samples. Schematic of the responsivity of ThT@GMP/Eu to ALP that hydrolyzes GMP to release ThT, which leads to fluorescent quenching, and its application in the construction of a fluorescent immunoassay for mIgG determination.

Efficient delivery of cytosolic proteins by protein-hexahistidine-metal co-assemblies

Proteins play key roles in most biological processes, and protein dysfunction can cause various diseases. Over the past few decades, tremendous development has occurred in the protein therapeutic market due to the high specificity, low side effects, and low risk of proteins. Currently, all protein drugs on the market are based on extracellular targeting; more than 70% of intracellular targets remain un-druggable. Efficient delivery of cytosolic proteins is of significance for protein drugs, advanced biotechnology and molecular cell biology. Herein, we developed a co-assembly strategy for protein-hexahistidine-metal for intracellular protein delivery. Based on the coordinative interaction between His₆ and metal ions, various proteins were encapsulated in situ into nanosized and positively charged protein encapsulation particles(Protein@HmA) through a co-assembly process with a high loading capacity and loading efficiency. Protein@HmA was able to deliver proteins with diverse physicochemical properties through multiple endocytosis pathways, and the protein could quickly escape from endosomes. In addition, the bioactivity of the loaded protein during co-assembly and the intracellular delivery processes were well preserved and could be properly exerted inside cells. Our results demonstrate that this strategy should be a valuable platform for protein delivery and has huge potential in protein-based theranostics. Hydrothermal synthesis of two-dimensional cadmium(II) micro-porous coordination material based on Bi-functional building block and its application in highly sensitive detection of Fe3+ and Cr2O72

Metal-organic framework (MOFs), also known as porous coordination polymers (PCPs), is a new kind of crystalline porous materials, which has received extensive attention in the past few decades. As a new type of sensing material, MOFs stand out from many other traditional fluorescence sensors because of its crystal characteristics, structural diversity, stable porosity and adjustable functional characteristics. In this work, the bi-functional building block containing aromatic carboxylic acid and triazole moieties, namely 3-(1H-1,3,4-triazol-1-yl) benzoic acid, was selected as the linker to synthesize {[Cd(µ₅-L)⋅I}_n (1, HL = 3-(1H-1,3,4-triazol-1-yl)benzoic acid) by hydrothermal method with transition Cd^II metal centers. Firstly, the preliminary characterization of 1 was carried out by means of PXRD, FT-IR, and then the UV and fluorescence tests were conducted to study the fluorescence properties of 1. The crystal structure analysis indicates that Cd^II is the center and the ligand is bridged to form a two-dimensional porous structure. In addition, 1 has good selectivity for Fe³⁺ and Cr₂O₇^2-, meanwhile, it has high detection sensitivity (K_sv quenching efficiency for Fe³⁺: 1.2 × 10⁴ M^-1 and Cr₂O₇^2- 1.85 × 10⁴ M^-1) and low detection limit (Fe³⁺: 19.21 μM and Cr₂O₇^2-: 12.46 μM). The results of photoluminescence test show that 1 can detect cations and anions with high sensitivity, resist the interference of other ions, and have good reusability. As far as we know, 1 is the first example of ultra-stable two-dimensional (2D) Cadmium (II) microporous coordination material as a fluorescence sensor for Fe³⁺ and Cr₂O₇^2-.

Solvent-tuned ultrasonic synthesis of 2D coordination polymer nanostructures and flakes

Herein, a new 2-dimensional coordination polymer based on copper (II), {Cu2(L)(DMF)2}n, where L stands for 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate (complex 1) is synthesized. Interestingly, we demonstrate that both solvent and sonication are relevant in the top-down fabrication of nanostructures. Water molecules are intercalated in suspended crystals of complex 1 modifying not only the coordination sphere of Cu(II) ions but also the final chemical formula and crystalline structure obtaining {[Cu(L)(H2O)3]·H2O}n (complex 2). On the other hand, ultrasound is required to induce the nanostructuration. Remarkably, different morphologies are obtained using different solvents and interconversion from one morphology to another seems to occur upon solvent exchange. Both complexes 1 and 2, as well as the corresponding nanostructures, have been fully characterized by different means such as infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction and microscopy.

Efficient dispersive micro solid-phase extraction of antidepressant drugs by a robust molybdenum-based coordination polymer

A molybdenum-based coordination polymer {[Mo(PDA)(NO)(μ-O)MoO₃]·1.42H₂O·0.58C₂H₅OH}_n (1) (PDA is 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylate) was synthesized using solvothermal reaction conditions and characterized using a suite of analytical techniques. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal a 1D chain structure, with close contacts expanding the structure into 3D including π-interactions and hydrogen bonding. The utility of 1 as a sorbent for dispersive micro solid-phase extraction (D-μSPE) of basic organic compounds such as antidepressants is supported by the presence of many functional groups on the surface of 1 (such as pendant carboxylates, Mo=O, Mo-NO, and CH groups) as well as extensive electrostatic interactions. Therefore, 1 can be a suitable choice as sorbent in the D-μSPE of antidepressant drugs from human plasma samples via appreciable adsorbate-adsorbent interactions. Determination of the extracted antidepressant drugs was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV), with calibration plots being linear in the concentration range 0.1-500 ng mL^-1 for amitriptyline and nortriptyline, 0.2-500 ng mL^-1 for imipramine, and 0.5-300 ng mL^-1 for sertraline. The relative standard deviation (RSD) values were calculated for both intra-day and inter-day precision, and the RSD% values were in the range 3.9 to 5.2% and 4.6-5.4%, respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) was determined as 0.03-0.2 ng mL^-1. Due to the good stability and reusability of the sorbent, the adsorption capacity had no obvious decrease after being used 20 times. Finally, the D-μSPE-HPLC-UV method was applied for the determination of antidepressant drugs in human plasma samples with recoveries of the analytes in the range 94.9 to 102%. The article describes the synthesis of a robust molybdenum-based coordination polymer, and its application as sorbent for dispersive micro solid-phase extraction of antidepressant drugs from human plasma samples.

Two Metal Complexes: Selective Detection of Fe3+ Ion and Promotion Activity on Mesenchymal Stem Cells Differentiate Into Vascular Endothelial Cells

With the aid of 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpee), a nitrogen-donor ligand and 1,3,5-tris(carboxymethoxy)benzene (H₃TCMB), a tripodal ether-connector tricarboxylate ligand, two novel transition metal coordination polymers (CPs) have been synthesized via the reaction of Zn(NO₃)₂·6H₂O or Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O with the ligands of H₃TCMB and bpee ligands with similar reactions under slightly distinct temperatures (80℃ for 1 and 120℃ for 2), and their chemical formula are [Cu₄(TCMB)₂(bpee)₂(µ₃-OH)₂(H₂O)₂]_n·12nH₂O (1) and [Zn₄(TCMB)₂(bpee)₂(µ₃-OH)₂(H₂O)₂]_n·12nH₂O (2). Complex 2 can be utilized as a super sensitive fluorescence quenching sensor to determine the Fe³⁺ ions. The effect of these two compounds on the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the cells of vascular endothelial was further explored.

Novel silver glycinate conjugate with 3D polymeric intermolecular self-assembly architecture; an antiproliferative agent which induces apoptosis on human breast cancer cells

The new water soluble silver(I) complex of glycine (GlyH) with formula [Ag₃(Gly)₂NO₃]_n (AGGLY) was synthesized. The compound was characterized by melting point (m.p.), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (¹H-,¹³C NMR) spectroscopic techniques and X-ray crystallography. The in vitro cytotoxic activity of AGGLY against human breast adenocarcinoma cell lines: MCF-7 (hormone depended (HD)) and MDA-MB-231 (hormone independent (HI)) was determined. For comparison other adenocarcinoma cells such as human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa) cells and lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549) were also screened. AGGLY inhibits both breast cancer cell lines stronger than cisplatin. On the contrary, AGGLY, exhibits lower toxicity against fetal lung fibroblast (MRC-5) cells than cisplatin. Its genotoxicity against MRC-5 cells was detected from the presence or absence of micronucleus using fluorescence microscopy, while the in vivo genotoxicity was evaluated using Allium cepa model. The MCF-7 cells morphology suggests apoptotic pathway for their death. The apoptotic pathway was confirmed by cell cycle arrest, Acridine Orange/Ethidium Bromide (AO/EB) Staining, and permeabilization of the mitochondrial membrane tests. The molecular mechanism of action was further studied by the binding affinity of AGGLY towards the calf thymus (CT) DNA.

A new mixed-ligand coordination polymer: protective activity on influenza a virus-induced COPD via regulating tlr3 gene expression on alveolar epithelial cells

A new Cu(II) coordination polymer (CP) of [Cu₅(µ₃-OH)₂(bcpt)₄(bib)₂] (1, bib = 1,4-bis(1-imidazoly)benzene and H₂bcpt = 3,5-bis(3'-carboxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole) was synthesized by reaction of Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O reacting with 3,5-bis(3'-carboxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole in the existence of 1,4-bis(1-imidazoly)benzene as the second ligand. The treatment activity of the compound on influenza A virus induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was evaluated. First, the biological function of the lung was assessed by measuring the partial pressure for the carbon dioxide (PaCO₂) and oxygen (PaO₂) via the analysis of blood gas. Next, the inflammatory cytokines released by alveolar epithelial cells were determined via the ELISA test kit. In addition to this, the real-time RT-PCR was carried out to determine the inflammatory response relative expression in the alveolar epithelial cells. Finally, the relative expression of the TLR3 on the alveolar epithelial cells was revealed by western blot. Possible binding patterns were acquired from the post scoring software and molecular docking, which exhibited two possible functional side chain binding sites of TLR3 to compounds binding, possibly offering distinct regulatory mechanisms.

Ultrasound-assisted exfoliation of a layered 2D coordination polymer with HER electrocatalytic activity

Large blue rectangular crystals of the 2D layered coordination polymer 1 have been obtained. The interest for this complex is two-fold. First, complex 1 is made of 2D layers packing along the (0-11) direction favored by the presence of lattice and coordinated water molecules. And second, nanostructures that could be derived by delamination are potentially suitable for catalytic purposes. Therefore it represents an excellent example to study the role of interlayer solvent molecules on the ultrasound-assisted delamination of functionally-active 2D metal-organic frameworks in water, a field of growing interest. With this aim, ultrasound-assisted delamination of the crystals was optimized with time, leading to stable nanosheet colloidal water suspensions with very homogeneous dimensions. Alternative bottom-up synthesis of related nanocrystals under ultrasound sonication yielded similar shaped crystals with much higher size dispersions. Finally, experimental results evidence that the nanostructures have higher catalytic activities in comparison to their bulk counterparts, due to larger metallic center exposition. These outcomes confirm that the combination of liquid phase exfoliation and a suitable synthetic design of 2D coordination polymers represents a very fruitful approach for the synthesis of functional nanosheets with an enhancement of catalytic active sites, and in general, with boosted functional properties.

Two Transition Metal Coordination Polymers: Luminescent Sensing Properties and Treatment Effect on Chronic Periodontitis by Reducing IL-6 and TNF-α Content

Two novel sulfonic functionalized coordination polymers (CPs) {[Cd1.5(dimb)(5-sip)(H2O)3]·3H2O}n (1, dimb = 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)butane) and [Co2(iptz)(Hiptz)(5-sip)(H2O)]·4H2O (2, Hiptz = 1-(4-(1H-imidazole-5-yl)phenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole) were acquired via different metal(II) salts reacting with the mixed ligands containing 1-(4-(1H-imidazole-5-yl)phenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole, 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)butane and sodium 5-sulfoisophthalate (NaH2sip), respectively. Furthermore, the complex 1 based on Cd(II) could be utilized as the luminescent senor for picric acid (PA) detection in water. In bio-research, compounds 1 and 2 treatment effect on chronic periodontitis was assessed and the specific mechanism was discussed. First of all, the RT-PCR was performed to measure the HmuY and fimA genes relative expression level in P.gingivalis after treated by compounds 1 and 2. Then, the TNF-α and IL-6 content in the fluid of gingival crevicular after compounds treatment was determined with ELISA detection kit.
