Dynamic tensile viscoelastic properties of porcine periodontal ligament

The periodontal ligament plays a significant role in orthodontic and masticatory processes. To explicitly investigate the effects of dynamic force amplitude and frequency on the dynamic tensile properties of the periodontal ligament, in vitro tensile experiments were conducted using a dynamic mechanical analysis at various dynamic force amplitudes across a wide frequency range. Storage modulus, loss modulus, and loss factor values were measured. A Maxwell constitutive model based on modulus was established to describe the dynamic mechanical properties of the periodontal ligament. The results showed that the storage modulus ranged from 29.53 MPa to 158.24 MPa, the loss modulus ranged from 3.26 MPa to 76.16 MPa, and the loss factor values all increased with higher frequencies and higher dynamic force amplitudes. Based on the parameters obtained from the fitting results, it is evident that the short-term response has a more pronounced impact on the elastic response of the periodontal ligament than the long-term response. Increasing the dynamic force amplitude and its frequency amplified the viscous effects of the periodontal ligament and enhanced energy dissipation. The proposed constitutive model further demonstrated that the periodontal ligament acts as a viscoelastic biomaterial. These findings have implications for future research on the periodontal ligament.

Preparation and Mechanism Analysis of Stainless Steel AOD Slag Mixture Base Materials

To promote resourceful utilization of argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) slag, this research developed a new three-ash stabilized recycled aggregate with AOD slag, cement, fly ash (FA), and recycled aggregate (RA) as raw materials. The AOD slag was adopted as an equal mass replacement for fly ash. The application of this aggregate in a road base layer was investigated in terms of its mechanical properties and mechanistic analysis. First, based on a cement: FA ratio of 1:4, 20 sets of mixed proportion schemes were designed for four kinds of cement dosage and AOD slag replacement rates (R/%). Through compaction tests and the 7-day unconfined compressive strength test, it was found that a 3% cement dosage met the engineering requirements. Then, the unconfined compressive strength test, indirect tensile strength test, compressive rebound modulus test, and expansion rate test were carried out at different age thresholds. The results showed that the mixture's strength, modulus, and expansion rate increased initially and then stabilized with age, while the strength and modulus initially increased and then decreased with increasing R. Secondly, based on X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) used to analyze the mechanism, it was found that the strength, modulus, and expansion rate of the new material can be promoted by blending AOD slag, due to its ability to fully stimulate the hydration reaction and pozzolanic reaction of the binder. Finally, based on the strength and modulus results, R = 3% was identified as the optimal ratio, which provides a reference point for the effective application of AOD slag and RA in road base materials.

Development of a Novel Covalently Bonded Conjugate of Caprylic Acid Tripeptide (Isoleucine-Leucine-Aspartic Acid) for Wound-Compatible and Injectable Hydrogel to Accelerate Healing

Third-degree burn injuries pose a significant health threat. Safer, easier-to-use, and more effective techniques are urgently needed for their treatment. We hypothesized that covalently bonded conjugates of fatty acids and tripeptides can form wound-compatible hydrogels that can accelerate healing. We first designed conjugated structures as fatty acid-aminoacid1-amonoacid2-aspartate amphiphiles (Cn acid-AA1-AA2-D), which were potentially capable of self-assembling into hydrogels according to the structure and properties of each moiety. We then generated 14 novel conjugates based on this design by using two Fmoc/tBu solid-phase peptide synthesis techniques; we verified their structures and purities through liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Of them, 13 conjugates formed hydrogels at low concentrations (≥0.25% w/v), but C8 acid-ILD-NH2 showed the best hydrogelation and was investigated further. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that C8 acid-ILD-NH2 formed fibrous network structures and rapidly formed hydrogels that were stable in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 2-8, 37 °C), a typical pathophysiological condition. Injection and rheological studies revealed that the hydrogels manifested important wound treatment properties, including injectability, shear thinning, rapid re-gelation, and wound-compatible mechanics (e.g., moduli G″ and G', ~0.5-15 kPa). The C8 acid-ILD-NH2(2) hydrogel markedly accelerated the healing of third-degree burn wounds on C57BL/6J mice. Taken together, our findings demonstrated the potential of the Cn fatty acid-AA1-AA2-D molecular template to form hydrogels capable of promoting the wound healing of third-degree burns.

Development of broad modulus profile upon polymer-polymer interface formation between immiscible glassy-rubbery domains

Interfaces of glassy materials such as thin films, blends, and composites create strong unidirectional gradients to the local heterogeneous dynamics that can be used to elucidate the length scales and mechanisms associated with the dynamic heterogeneity of glasses. We focus on bilayer films of two different polymers with very different glass transition temperatures ([Formula: see text]) where previous work has demonstrated a long-range (∼200 nm) profile in local [Formula: see text] is established between immiscible glassy and rubbery polymer domains when the polymer-polymer interface is formed to equilibrium. Here, we demonstrate that an equally long-ranged gradient in local modulus [Formula: see text] is established when the polymer-polymer interface ([Formula: see text]5 nm) is formed between domains of glassy polystyrene (PS) and rubbery poly(butadiene) (PB), consistent with previous reports of a broad [Formula: see text] profile in this system. A continuum physics model for the shear wave propagation caused by a quartz crystal microbalance across a PB/PS bilayer film is used to measure the viscoelastic properties of the bilayer during the evolution of the PB/PS interface showing the development of a broad gradient in local modulus [Formula: see text] spanning [Formula: see text]180 nm between the glassy and rubbery domains of PS and PB. We suggest these broad profiles in [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] arise from a coupling of the spectrum of vibrational modes across the polymer-polymer interface as a result of acoustic impedance matching of sound waves with [Formula: see text] nm during interface broadening that can then trigger density fluctuations in the neighboring domain.

Characterization of materials used for 3D printing dental crowns and hybrid prostheses

OBJECTIVES

To compare the filler weight percentage (wt%), filler and resin composition, flexural strength, modulus, and hardness of several 3D-printed resins to direct and indirect restorative materials.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Four 3D-printed resins (C&B MFH, Ceramic Crown, OnX, and OnX Tough), one milled resin composite (Lava Ultimate), one conventional composite (Filtek Supreme), and one ceramic (IPS e.max CAD) were evaluated. Filler wt% was determined by the burned ash technique, and filler particle morphology and composition were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. Organic resin composition was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Three-point bend flexural strength and modulus of the materials were determined by ISO 4049 or ISO 6872. Vickers microhardness was measured. Data were compared with a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey post hoc analysis. Linear regression analysis was performed for filler wt% versus flexural strength, modulus, and hardness.

RESULTS

3D-printed resins were composed of various sized and shaped silica fillers and various types of methacrylate resins. Significant differences were found among filler wt% with some materials around 3% (C&B MFH), others between 33% and 38% (OnX Tough and OnX), others around 50% (Ceramic Crown), and some around 72% (Filtek Supreme and Lava Ultimate). All 3D-printed resins had significantly lower flexural strength, modulus, and hardness than the conventional and milled resin composites and ceramic material (p < 0.001). Filler wt% demonstrated a linear relationship with modulus (p = 0.013, R2  = 0.821) and hardness (p = 0.018, R2  = 0.787) but not flexural strength (p = 0.056, R2  = 0.551).

CONCLUSIONS

3D-printed resins contain from 3% to 50% filler content. Filler wt% alone does not affect flexural strength, but strength may be affected by resin composition as well. Although the 3D-printed resins had lower flexural strength, modulus, and hardness than milled and conventional composite and ceramic, they demonstrated nonbrittle plastic behavior.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The properties of 3D-printed resins vary based on their composition, which affects their clinical applications.

Falling weight deflectometer dispersion curve method for pavement modulus calculation

The falling weight deflectometer (FWD) test is a common non-destructive testing method for evaluating the structural capacity of pavements. At present, data processing of the FWD test mainly focuses on the deflection data, while paying less attention to the deflection-time history. Because a FWD is equipped with impulse loads and geophones, which allow for the generation and capture of surface wave signal propagation, it is hypothesized that Rayleigh wave dispersion theory can be applied to calculate the modulus profile along the pavement depth by analysing the dispersive properties of the deflection signal measured during FWD tests. To test this hypothesis, we develop a new methodology for the FWD test and data analysis, referred to as the FWD dispersion curve method. We first introduce the concept of the new method, followed by an illustration of the procedure and the experimental set-up. Case studies on three concrete pavement segments are then presented to evaluate the effectiveness of the FWD dispersion curve method. Modifications to the existing FWD device are further recommended for the impact loading sources and signal collection process so that the modulus of a much shallower layer, such as the concrete slab and upper asphalt layers, can be obtained. Analysis of Factors Influencing the Modulus of Hot-Recycled Asphalt Mixture with High RAP

Generally, the dynamic modulus and bending stiffness modulus are used to evaluate the mechanical properties of asphalt mixture, and they are also used as basic parameters for asphalt mixture design. Therefore, a study was conducted on changes in the dynamic modulus and bending stiffness modulus of hot-recycled asphalt mixture with high levels of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) under the influence of different factors: dosage of regenerant, curing temperature, and curing time. The performance of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) was first evaluated. Then, the hot-recycled asphalt mixture was adjusted and designed in order to conduct modulus experiments, composed of the dynamic modulus test and three-point bending test. Finally, the influencing factors were not only qualitatively but also quantitatively analyzed to clarify the change laws of the mechanical parameters of hot-recycled asphalt mixture. The results showed that the modulus of the recycled asphalt mixture first decreased, then increased, and then decreased with increasing dosage of regenerant. As the curing time or temperature increased, the modulus first decreased and then increased. In terms of the dynamic modulus of the hot-recycled asphalt mixture, the curing time had the greatest impact, followed by dosage of the regenerant and curing temperature. For bending stiffness modulus, the influence of dosage of the regenerant was the greatest, followed by curing time and curing temperature. For the bending stiffness modulus of hot-recycled asphalt mixture, the curing conditions had a greater influence compared with the dynamic modulus.

Numerical and Experimental Analysis of Mechanical Properties in Hybrid Epoxy-Basalt Composites Partially Reinforced with Cellulosic Fillers

The current work is focused on numerical and experimental studies of woven fabric composites modified by hybridisation with biological (cellulosic) filler materials. The mechanical performance of the composites is characterized under tensile, bending and impact loads and the effect of hybridisation is observed with respect to pure and nonhybrid composites. Numerical models are developed using computational tools to predict mechanical performance under tensile loading. The computational prediction results are compared and validated with relevant experimental results. This research is aimed at understanding the mechanical performance of basalt-epoxy composites partially reinforced with micro-/nano-sized bio-fillers from cellulose and intended for various application areas. Different weave structures, e.g., plain, twill, matt, etc., were investigated with respect to the mechanical properties of the hybrid composites. The effects of hybridizing with cellulose particles and different weave patterns of the basalt fabric are studied. In general, the use of high-strength fibres such as basalt along with cellulosic fillers representing up to 3% of the total weight improves the mechanical performance of the hybrid structures. The thermomechanical performance of the hybrid composites improved significantly by using basalt fabric as well as by addition of 3% weight of cellulosic fillers. Results reveal the advantages of hybridisation and the inclusion of natural cellulosic fillers in the hybrid composite structures. The material developed is suitable for high-end applications in components for construction that demand advanced mechanical and thermomechanical performance. Furthermore, the inclusion of biodegradable fillers fulfills the objectives of sustainable and ecological construction materials.

Bone intrinsic material and compositional properties in postmenopausal women diagnosed with long-term Type-1 diabetes

The incidence of diabetes mellitus and the associated complications are growing worldwide, affecting the patients' quality of life and exerting a considerable burden on health systems. Yet, the increase in fracture risk in type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients is not fully captured by bone mineral density (BMD), leading to the hypothesis that alterations in bone quality are responsible for the increased risk. Material/compositional properties are important aspects of bone quality, yet information on human bone material/compositional properties in T1D is rather sparse. The purpose of the present study is to measure both the intrinsic material behaviour by nanoindentation, and material compositional properties by Raman spectroscopy as a function of tissue age and microanatomical location (cement lines) in bone tissue from iliac crest biopsies from postmenopausal women diagnosed with long-term T1D (N = 8), and appropriate sex-, age-, BMD- and clinically-matched controls (postmenopausal women; N = 5). The results suggest elevation of advanced glycation endproducts (AGE) content in the T1D and show significant differences in mineral maturity / crystallinity (MMC) and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content between the T1D and control groups. Furthermore, both hardness and modulus by nanoindentation are greater in T1D. These data suggest a significant deterioration of material strength properties (toughness) and compositional properties in T1D compared with controls.

Investigations of Structural, Magnetic, and Electrochemical Properties of NiFe2O4 Nanoparticles as Electrode Materials for Supercapacitor Applications

Magnetic nanoparticles of NiFe₂O₄ were successfully prepared by utilizing the sol-gel techniques. The prepared samples were investigated through various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dielectric spectroscopy, DC magnetization and electrochemical measurements. XRD data analysed using Rietveld refinement procedure inferred that NiFe₂O₄ nanoparticles displayed a single-phase nature with face-centred cubic crystallinity with space group Fd-3m. Average crystallite size estimated using the XRD patterns was observed to be ~10 nm. The ring pattern observed in the selected area electron diffraction pattern (SAED) also confirmed the single-phase formation in NiFe₂O₄ nanoparticles. TEM micrographs confirmed the uniformly distributed nanoparticles with spherical shape and an average particle size of 9.7 nm. Raman spectroscopy showed characteristic bands corresponding to NiFe₂O₄ with a shift of the A_1g mode, which may be due to possible development of oxygen vacancies. Dielectric constant, measured at different temperatures, increased with temperature and decreased with increase in frequency at all temperatures. The Havrilliak-Negami model used to study the dielectric spectroscopy indicated that a NiFe₂O₄ nanoparticles display non-Debye type relaxation. Jonscher's power law was utilized for the calculation of the exponent and DC conductivity. The exponent values clearly demonstrated the non-ohmic behaviour of NiFe₂O₄ nanoparticles. The dielectric constant of the nanoparticles was found to be >300, showing a normal dispersive behaviour. AC conductivity showed an increase with the rise in temperature with the highest value of 3.4 × 10^-9 S/cm at 323 K. The M-H curves revealed the ferromagnetic behaviour of a NiFe₂O₄ nanoparticle. The ZFC and FC studies suggested a blocking temperature of ~64 K. The saturation of magnetization determined using the law of approach to saturation was ~61.4 emu/g at 10 K, corresponding to the magnetic anisotropy ~2.9 × 10⁴ erg/cm³. Electrochemical studies showed that a specific capacitance of ~600 F g^-1 was observed from the cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge, which suggested its utilization as a potential electrode for supercapacitor applications.

Hardness, Modulus, and Refractive Index of Plasma-Assisted Atomic-Layer-Deposited Hafnium Oxide Thin Films Doped with Aluminum Oxide

Coatings with tunable refractive index and high mechanical resilience are useful in optical systems. In this work, thin films of HfO₂ doped with Al₂O₃ were deposited on silicon at 300 °C by using plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD). The mainly amorphous 60-80 nm thick films consisted Al in the range of 2 to 26 at.%. The refractive indexes varied from 1.69 to 2.08 at the wavelength of 632 nm, and they consistently depended on the composition. The differences were higher in the UV spectral region. At the same time, the hardness of the films was from 12-15 GPa; the modulus was in the range of 160-180 GPa; and the mechanical properties did not have a good correlation with the deposited compositions. The deposition conditions, element contents, and refractive indexes at respective wavelengths were correlated. The results indicated that it is possible to tune optical properties and retain mechanical properties of atomic layer-deposited thin films of HfO₂ with Al₂O₃ as doping oxide. Such films could be used as mechanically resilient and optically tunable coatings in, for instance, micro- or nano-electromechanical systems or transparent displays.

Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) surface chemistry and modulus differentially modulate neutrophils and lens epithelial cells-possible implications in cellular responses to intraocular lenses

During cataract surgery, diseased lenses in the eye are surgically removed and replaced with polymeric artificial intraocular lenses (IOLs). Patients can experience a complication called posterior capsular opacification (PCO) that is corrected through the removal of part of the posterior capsule using a neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd-YAG) laser to restore the optical path. These interventions have increased costs and can damage the retina and the IOL. PCO develops when lens epithelial cells (LECs) proliferate, migrate, and undergo epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Neutrophils involved in the immune response triggered during implantation impact LEC behavior and produce damaging neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). In this research, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) -based disks were synthesized with varying amounts of comonomer (HEMA with 0, 2, and 12 mol% MMA) and functionalized with carboxyl and amine groups, yielding nine different hydrogels. Material and chemical properties of the disks were characterized, and neutrophil-like HL60 cells and B3 LECs were incubated with the disks. HL60 cell behavior was more strongly influenced by chemical functionalization than by mechanical properties with increases in adherence and NET accumulation. Conversely, the behavior and viability of B3 LECs were more strongly influenced by mechanical properties with increases in cell adhesion and α-SMA expression with increasing compressive moduli. Interestingly, B3 LECs had decreased viability and increased α-SMA expression when cultured on PHEMA2 disks pretreated with isolated NETs. Critical to the understanding of PCO and its prevention are both surface chemistry and mechanics as well as the inflammatory response.

Sorption-Deformation-Percolation Model for Diffusion in Nanoporous Media

Diffusion of molecules in porous media is a critical process that is fundamental to numerous chemical, physical, and biological applications. The prevailing theoretical frameworks are challenged when explaining the complex dynamics resulting from the highly tortuous host structure and strong guest-host interactions, especially when the pore size approximates the size of diffusing molecule. This study, using molecular dynamics, formulates a semiempirical model based on theoretical considerations and factorization that offer an alternative view of diffusion and its link with the structure and behavior (sorption and deformation) of material. By analyzing the intermittent dynamics of water, microscopic self-diffusion coefficients are predicted. The apparent tortuosity, defined as the ratio of the bulk to the confined self-diffusion coefficients, is found to depend quantitatively on a limited set of material parameters: heat of adsorption, elastic modulus, and percolation probability, all of which are experimentally accessible. The proposed sorption-deformation-percolation model provides guidance on the understanding and fine-tuning of diffusion.

Accelerated versus Slow In Vitro Aging Methods and Their Impact on Universal Chromatic, Urethane-Based Composites

Structural coloring of dental resin-based composites (RBC) is used to create universal chromatic materials designed to meet any aesthetic need, replacing the mixing and matching of multiple shades. The microstructural adjustments to create this desideratum involve nanoscale organic-inorganic core-shell structures with a particular arrangement. The generally higher polymer content associated with these structures compared to universal chromatic RBCs colored by pigments, which in their microstructure come close to regularly shaded RBCs, can influence the way the material ages. Accelerated and slow aging up to 1.2 years of immersion in artificial saliva at 37 °C were therefore compared in relation to their effects on the materials described above and in relation to the immersion conditions prescribed by standards. Quasi-static and viscoelastic parameters were assessed to quantify these effects by a depth-sensing indentation test equipped with a DMA module. The microstructure of the materials was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The results convincingly show a differentiated influence of the aging protocol on the measured properties, which was more sensitively reflected in the viscoelastic behavior. Accelerated aging, previously associated with the clinical behavior of RBCs, shows a 2- to 10-fold greater effect compared to slow aging in artificial saliva of up to 1.2 years, highly dependent on the microstructure of the material.

Machine-Learning-Assisted Design of Highly Tough Thermosetting Polymers

Despite advances in machine learning for accurately predicting material properties, forecasting the performance of thermosetting polymers remains a challenge due to the sparsity of historical experimental data and their complicated crosslinked structures. We proposed a machine-learning-assisted materials genome approach (MGA) for rapidly designing novel epoxy thermosets with excellent mechanical properties (high tensile moduli, high tensile strength, and high toughness) through high-throughput screening in a vast chemical space. Machine-learning models were established by combining attention- and gate-augmented graph convolutional networks, multilayer perceptrons, classical gel theory, and transfer learning from small molecules to polymers. Proof-of-concept experiments were carried out, and the structures designed by the MGA were verified. Gene substructures affecting the modulus, strength, and toughness were also extracted, revealing the mechanisms of polymers with high mechanical properties. The developed strategy can be employed to design other thermosetting polymers efficiently.

Microstructure and Properties of Densified Gd2O3 Bulk

In this work, Gd₂O₃ bulks were sintered at temperatures ranging from 1400 °C to 1600 °C for times from 6 h to 24 h, and their microstructure and properties were studied for a wider application of materials in thermal barrier coatings. The densification of the Gd₂O₃ bulk reached 96.16% when it was sintered at 1600 °C for 24 h. The elastic modulus, hardness, fracture toughness and thermal conductivity of the bulks all increased with the rise in sintering temperature and extension of sintering time, while the coefficient of thermal expansion decreased. When the Gd₂O₃ bulk was sintered at 1600 °C for 24 h, it had the greatest elastic modulus, hardness, fracture toughness and thermal conductivity of 201.15 GPa, 9.13 GPa, 15.03 MPa·m^0.5 and 2.75 W/(m·k) (at 1100 °C), respectively, as well as the smallest thermal expansion coefficients of 6.69 × 10^-6/°C (at 1100 °C).

Ultra-High Modulus Hydrogels Mimicking Cartilage of the Human Body

The human body is comprised of numerous types of cartilage with a range of high moduli, despite their high hydration. Owing to the limitations of cartilage tissue healing and biological grafting procedures, synthetic replacements have emerged but are limited by poorly matched moduli. While conventional hydrogels can achieve similar hydration to cartilage tissues, their moduli are substantially inferior. Herein, triple network (TN) hydrogels are prepared to synergistically leverage intra-network electrostatic repulsive and hydrophobic interactions, as well as inter-network electrostatic attractive interactions. They are comprised of an anionic 1^st network, a neutral 2^nd network (capable of hydrophobic associations), and a cationic 3^rd network. Collectively, these interactions act synergistically as effective, yet dynamic crosslinks. By tuning the concentration of the cationic 3^rd network, these TN hydrogels achieve high moduli of ≈1.5 to ≈3.5 MPa without diminishing cartilage-like water contents (≈80%), strengths, or toughness values. This unprecedented combination of properties poises these TN hydrogels as cartilage substitutes in applications spanning articulating joints, intervertebral discs (IVDs), trachea, and temporomandibular joint disc (TMJ).

Mixed Ionic and Electronic Conduction in TeO2-ZnO-V2O5 Glasses towards Good Dielectric Features

The melt-quenching technique was used to synthesize tellurite glasses of the chemical composition 80TeO₂-(20-x) ZnO-xV₂O₅. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicate the amorphous nature of the prepared glasses. Raman and FTIR measurements demonstrate a progressive substitution of the Te-O-Te linkages by the Te-O-V bridges and the formation of VO₄ and VO₅ units by a change of the vanadium coordination due to the higher number of oxygens incorporated by further addition of V₂O₅. The AC conductivity was investigated in the frequency range of 40 Hz to 10⁷ Hz between 473 K to 573 K. A good coherence of the AC conductivity was found using a model correlating the barrier hopping (CPH) and the dominant conduction process changes from ionic to polaronic with the addition of V₂O₅. The dielectric constant exhibits high values in the range of lower and medium frequencies. Both variations of the electric modulus and the dielectric loss parameters with frequency and temperature showed a relaxation character mainly assigned to the vanadate phases. The electric modulus displays a non-Debye dielectric dispersion and a relaxation process. The present results open the door to future zinc-tellurite glasses-doped vanadium exploitation as a potential electrolyte-based material for solid-state batteries.

Effect of Polystyrene Synthesis Method on Water Sorption and Glass Transition

Commodity PS is synthesized via free radical polymerization, whereas PS in block copolymers (BCPs) is typically synthesized via living anionic polymerization. The purpose of this work is to investigate how the synthesis method impacts important properties such as water sorption and glass transition temperature (T_g). Water sorption is important because the performance of nanostructured polymer membranes in various applications is known to be affected by environmental conditions such as humidity. T_g is important because it dictates processing conditions, both for commodity PS as well as BCPs such as thermoplastic elastomers. Water sorption in commercial PS was found to be 0.5 mg_water/g_polymer at the highest humidities investigated (about 80%), in agreement with literature. On the other hand, syndiotactic PS synthesized anionically at low temperature absorbed more water, up to 1.5 mg_water/g_polymer, due to higher free volume. The greatest impact on water sorption was due to addition of hydrophilic hydroxyl chain ends to atactic PS, which resulted in water sorption of up to 2.3 mg_water/g_polymer. In addition to measuring water sorption and dry T_g separately, the impact of relative humidity on PS T_g was examined. Combined differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis show that on going from the dry state to high humidity, the T_g of PS decreases by 5 °C. Moreover, the tensile storage modulus of PS decreases from 1.58 GPa at 0% RH to 0.53 GPa at 40% RH. In addition to the practical relevance of this study, this report fills a gap in experimental literature by using a poor solvent system, PS/water, to examine plasticization in the pure polymer limit.

Long-Term Assessment of Contemporary Ion-Releasing Restorative Dental Materials

The objective was to evaluate new commercially available ion-releasing restorative materials and compare them to established anti-cariogenic materials. Four materials were tested: alkasite Cention (Ivoclar Vivadent) in self-cure or light-cure mode, giomer Beautifil II (Shofu), conventional glass-ionomer Fuji IX (GC), and resin composite Tetric EvoCeram (Ivoclar Vivadent) as a control. Flexural strength, flexural modulus, and Weibull modulus were measured one day, three months, and after three months with accelerated aging in ethanol. Water sorption and solubility were evaluated for up to one year. Degree of conversion was measured during 120 min for self-cured and light-cured Cention. In this study, Beautifil II was the ion-releasing material with the highest flexural strength and modulus and with the best resistance to aging. Alkasite Cention showed superior mechanical properties to Fuji IX. Weibull analysis showed that the glass-ionomer had the least reliable distribution of mechanical properties with the highest water sorption. The solubility of self-cured alkasite exceeded the permissible values according to ISO 4049. Degree of conversion of light-cured Cention was higher than in self-cure mode. The use of alkasite Cention is recommended only in the light-cure mode.

Finite element analysis of trabecular bone microstructure using CT imaging and continuum mechanical modelling

Purpose

Osteoporosis is a bone disease associated with enhanced bone loss, microstructural degeneration, and fracture‐risk. Finite element (FE) modeling is used to estimate trabecular bone (Tb) modulus from high‐resolution three‐dimensional (3‐D) imaging modalities including micro‐computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and high‐resolution peripheral quantitative CT (HR‐pQCT). This paper validates an application of voxel‐based continuum finite element analysis (FEA) to predict Tb modulus from clinical CT imaging under a condition similar to in vivo imaging by comparing with measures derived by micro‐CT and experimental approaches.

Method

Voxel‐based continuum FEA methods for CT imaging were implemented using linear and nonlinear models and applied on distal tibial scans under a condition similar to in vivo imaging. First, tibial axis in a CT scan was aligned with the coordinate z‐axis at 150 μm isotropic voxels. FEA was applied on an upright cylindrical volume of interests (VOI) with its axis coinciding with the tibial bone axis. Voxel volume, edge, and vertex elements and their connectivity were defined as per the isotropic image grid. A calibration phantom was used to calibrate CT numbers in Hounsfield unit to bone mineral density (BMD) values, which was then converted into calcium hydroxyapatite (CHA) density. Mechanical properties at each voxel volume element was defined using its ash‐density defined on CT‐derived CHA density. For FEA, the bottom surface of the cylindrical VOI was fixed and a constant displacement was applied along the z‐direction at each vertex element on the top surface to simulate a physical axial compressive loading condition. Finally, a Poisson's ratio of 0.3 was applied, and Tb modulus (MPa) was computed as the ratio of average von Mises stress (MPa) of volume elements on the top surface and the applied displacement. FEA parameters including mesh element size, substep number, and different tolerance values were optimized.

Results

CT‐derived Tb modulus values using continuum FEA showed high linear correlation with the micro‐CT‐derived reference values (r ∈ [0.87 0.90]) as well as experimentally measured values (r ∈ [0.80 0.87]). Linear correlation of computed modulus with their reference values using continuum FEA with linear modeling was comparable with that obtained by nonlinear modeling. Nonlinear continuum FEA‐based modulus values (mean of 1087.2 MPa) showed greater difference from their reference values (mean of 1498.9 MPa using micro‐CT‐based FEA) as compared with linear continuum methods. High repeat CT scan reproducibility (intra‐class correlation [ICC] = 0.98) was observed for computed modulus values using both linear and nonlinear continuum FEA. It was observed that high stress regions coincide with Tb microstructure as fuzzily characterized by BMD values. Distributions of von Mises stress over Tb microstructure and marrow regions were significantly different (p < 10^–8).

Conclusion

Voxel‐based continuum FEA offers surrogate measures of Tb modulus from CT imaging under a condition similar to in vivo imaging that alleviates the need for segmentation of Tb and marrow regions, while accounting for bone distribution at the microstructural level. This relaxation of binary segmentation will extend the scope of FEA application to assess mechanical properties of bone microstructure at relatively low‐resolution imaging.

Transport Mechanisms and Dielectric Features of Mg-Doped ZnO Nanocrystals for Device Applications

Magnesium-doped zinc oxide "ZnO:Mg" nanocrystals (NCs) were fabricated using a sol gel method. The Mg concentration impact on the structural, morphological, electrical, and dielectric characteristics of ZnO:Mg NCs were inspected. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns display the hexagonal wurtzite structure without any additional phase. TEM images revealed the nanometric size of the particles with a spherical-like shape. The electrical conductivity of the ZnO NCs, thermally activated, was found to be dependent on the Mg content. The impedance spectra were represented via a corresponding circuit formed by a resistor and constant phase element (CPE). A non-Debye type relaxation was located through the analyses of the complex impedance. The conductivity diminished with the incorporation of the Mg element. The AC conductivity is reduced by raising the temperature. Its plot obeys the Arrhenius law demonstrating a single activation energy during the conduction process. The complex impedance highlighted the existence of a Debye-type dielectric dispersion. The various ZnO:Mg samples demonstrate high values of dielectric constant with small dielectric losses for both medium and high-frequency regions. Interestingly, the Mg doping with 3% content exhibits colossal dielectric constant (more than 2 × 10⁴) over wide temperature and frequency ranges, with Debye-like relaxation. The study of the electrical modulus versus the frequency and at different temperatures confirms the non-Debye relaxation. The obtained results reveal the importance of the ZnO:Mg NCs for device applications. This encourages their application in energy storage.

Effect of Carbon Nanofiber Clustering on the Micromechanical Properties of a Cement Paste

The use of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) in cement systems has received significant interest over the last decade due to their nanoscale reinforcing potential. However, despite many reports on the formation of localized CNF clusters, their effect on the cement paste micromechanical properties and relation to the mechanical response at the macroscopic scale are still not fully understood. In this study, grid nanoindentation coupled with scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy was used to determine the local elastic indentation modulus and hardness of a portland cement paste containing 0.2% CNFs with sub-micro and microscale CNF clusters. The presence of low stiffness and porous assemblage of phases (modulus of 15–25 GPa) was identified in the cement paste with CNFs and was attributed primarily to the interfacial zone surrounding the CNF clusters. The CNFs favored the formation of higher modulus C–S–H phases (>30 GPa) in the bulk paste at the expense of the lower stiffness C–S–H. Nanoindentation results combined with a microscale–macroscale upscaling homogenization method further revealed an elastic modulus of the CNF clusters in the range from 18 to 21 GPa, indicating that the CNF clusters acted as compliant inclusions relative to the cement paste.

Excellent Specific Mechanical and Electrical Properties of Anisotropic Freeze-Cast Native and Carbonized Bacterial Cellulose-Alginate Foams

Native and carbonized freeze-cast bacterial cellulose-alginate (BC-ALG) foams possess an ice-templated honeycomb-like architecture with remarkable properties. Their unique pore morphology consists of two levels of porosity: 20-50 μm diameter pores between, and 0.01-10 μm diameter pores within the cell-walls. The mechanical properties of the BC-ALG foams, a Young's modulus of up to 646.2 ± 90.4 kPa and a compressive yield strength of up to 37.1 ± 7.9 kPa, are high for their density and scale as predicted by the Gibson-Ashby model for cellular materials. Carbonizing the BC-ALG foams in an inert atmosphere at 1000-1200 °C in a second processing step, both pore morphology and mechanical properties of the BC-ALG remain well preserved with specific mechanical properties that are higher than those reported in the literature for similar foams. Also the electrical conductivity of the BC-ALG foams is high at 1.68 ± 0.04 S cm^-1 at a density of only 0.055 g cm^-3, and is found to increase with density as predicted, and as a function of the degree of carbonization determined by both carbonization temperature and atmosphere. The property profile makes freeze-cast BC-ALG foams and their carbonized foams attractive for energy applications and as a sorbent.

Effect of Gd2O3 Addition on the Microstructure and Properties of Gd2O3-Yb2O3-Y2O3-ZrO2 (GYYZO) Ceramics

Gd and Yb elements have high chemical stability, which can stabilize the solid solution in ZrO₂. Gd₂O₃ and Yb₂O₃ have high melting points, and good oxidation resistance in extreme environments, stable chemical properties. Therefore, Gd₂O₃ and Yb₂O₃ were added to ZrO₂ to stabilize oxides, improve the high temperature stability, and effectively decrease the thermal conductivity at high temperature. In this work, 5 wt% Yb₂O₃ and 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt% Gd₂O₃ were doped into 8 wt% Y₂O₃ stabilized ZrO₂ (8YSZ) powders as thermal barrier coating materials, and sintered at 1650 °C for 6 h, 12 h, 24 h. The effects of Gd₂O₃ addition on the microstructure, density, thermal conductivity, hardness, and fracture toughness of Gd₂O₃-Yb₂O₃-Y₂O₃-ZrO₂ (GYYZO) bulk composite ceramics were investigated. It was found that the densification of the 8YSZ bulk and GYYZO bulk with 15 wt% Gd₂O₃ reached 96.89% and 96.22% sintered at 1650 °C for 24 h. With the increase of Gd₂O₃ addition, the hardness, elastic modulus and fracture toughness of the GYYZO bulk increased and the thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of the GYYZO bulk decreased. GYYZO bulk with 15 wt% Gd₂O₃ sintered at 1650 °C for 24h had the highest hardness, elastic modulus and fracture toughness of 15.61 GPa, 306.88 GPa, 7.822 MPa·m^0.5, and the lowest thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of 1.04 W/(m·k) and 7.89 × 10⁻⁶/°C at 1100 °C, respectively. The addition of Gd₂O₃ into YSZ could not only effectively reduce the thermal conductivity but also improve the mechanical properties, which would improve the thermal barrier coatings’ performances further.

Modulus characterization of cells with submicron colloidal probes by atomic force microscope

Colloidal probes have been increasingly demanded for the characterization of cellular modulus in atomic force microscope because of their well-defined geometry and large contact area with cell. In this work, submicron colloidal probes are prepared by scanning electron microscope/focused ion beam and compared with sharp tip and micron colloidal probe, in conjunction with loading velocity and indentation depth on the apparent elastic modulus. NIM and cartilage cells are used as specimens. The results show that modulus value measured by sharp tip changes significantly with loading velocity while remains almost stable by colloidal probes. Also, submicron colloidal probe is superior in characterizing the modulus with increasing indentation depth, which could help reveal the mechanical details of cellular membrane and the modulus of the whole cell. To test the submicron colloidal probe further, the modulus distribution map of cell is scanned with submicron colloidal probe of 50 nm radius during small and large indentation depths with high spatial resolution. The outcome of this work will provide the effective submicron colloidal probe according to the effect of loading velocity and indentation depth, characterizing the mechanical properties of the cells.

Stiffness of targeted layer-by-layer nanoparticles impacts elimination half-life, tumor accumulation, and tumor penetration

Nanoparticle (NP) stiffness has been shown to significantly impact circulation time and biodistribution in anticancer drug delivery. In particular, the relationship between particle stiffness and tumor accumulation and penetration in vivo is an important phenomenon to consider in optimizing NP-mediated tumor delivery. Layer-by-layer (LbL) NPs represent a promising class of multifunctional nanoscale drug delivery carriers. However, there has been no demonstration of the versatility of LbL systems in coating systems with different stiffnesses, and little is known about the potential role of LbL NP stiffness in modulating in vivo particle trafficking, although NP modulus has been recently studied for its impact on pharmacokinetics. LbL nanotechnology enables NPs to be functionalized with uniform coatings possessing molecular tumor-targeting properties, independent of the NP core stiffness. Here, we report that the stiffness of LbL NPs is directly influenced by the mechanical properties of its underlying liposomal core, enabling the modulation and optimization of LbL NP stiffness while preserving LbL NP outer layer tumor-targeting and stealth properties. We demonstrate that the stiffness of LbL NPs has a direct impact on NP pharmacokinetics, organ and tumor accumulation, and tumor penetration-with compliant LbL NPs having longer elimination half-life, higher tumor accumulation, and higher tumor penetration. Our findings underscore the importance of NP stiffness as a design parameter in enhancing the delivery of LbL NP formulations.

Effect of Mould Orientation on the Field-Dependent Properties of MR Elastomers under Shear Deformation

In this study, magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) was fabricated using an electromagnetic device with a new configuration mold at the orientation of 0°, 45° and 90°. This new curing concept enhanced the alignment of carbonyl iron particles (CIPs) within the silicone matrix in the presence of silicone oil (SO) during solidifying, by eliminating air gaps to prevent magnetic flux losses. Using a mold made of steel, which is a magnetic material, the mold functions as a guide for concentrated magnetic flux of 0.315 T to pass through the MRE sample. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the surface morphology of the fabricated MRE samples particularly the alignment of the CIPs. The field-dependent dynamic properties of the MREs were measured using a rheometer. The analysis implied that the effectiveness of the MRE operating under shear deformation with this curing concept provided the highest magneto-induced modulus of 1.01 MPa when a 45° orientation mold is used, with relative magnetorheological (MR) effect value up to 918%, followed by 0° mold orientation with 0.79 MPa magneto-induced modulus and 646% relative MR effect. The high modulus properties offered by this MRE are believed to be potentially useful in industrial applications where a high range of stiffness is required particularly in the shear direction.

Practical Limits for Two Fundamental Approaches to Designing Particle Size Distributions to Address a Specific Physical Property like Viscosity

It has previously been shown that optimum particle size distributions with a maximum packing fraction can be achieved from a straight line plot of the accumulated sum of particle volume fractions versus the square root of particle size. This study addresses practical limits for two dominant fundamental approaches to designing particle size distributions to address the effect on a specific physical property such as viscosity. The two fundamental approaches to obtain such a straight line would include: the first design approach would be generated utilizing the same initial particle size, Dmin, but by using different ultimate particle sizes, Dmax. The second design approach would be generated where each distribution starts with the same initial particle size, Dmin, and ends with the same ultimate particle size, Dmax. The first design approach is particularly useful to identify the possible slopes available based on the smallest and largest particle sizes available. The second design approach can be utilized to identify the preferred ratio between particles, Z, and the number of different particle sizes, n, to be utilized in the final particle blend. The extensive empirical experimental evaluations of particle size distributions generated by McGeary were then utilized to confirm the limits.

Application of Nanoindentation in the Characterization of a Porous Material with a Clastic Texture

In materials science and engineering, a significant amount of research has been carried out using indentation techniques in order to characterize the mechanical properties and microstructure of a broad range of natural and engineered materials. However, there are many unresearched or partly researched areas, such as, for example, the investigation of the shape of the indentation load–displacement curve, the associated mechanism in porous materials with clastic texture, and the influence of the texture on the constitutive behavior of the materials. In the present study, nanoindentation is employed in the analysis of the mechanical behavior of a benchmark material composed of plaster of Paris, which represents a brand of highly porous-clastic materials with a complex structure; such materials may find many applications in medicine, production industry, and energy sectors. The focus of the study is directed at the examination of the influence of the porous structure on the load–displacement response in loading and unloading phases based on nanoindentation experiments, as well as the variation with repeating the indentation in already indented locations. Events such as pop-in in the loading phase and bowing out and elbowing in the unloading phase of a given nanoindentation test are studied. Modulus, hardness, and the elastic stiffness values were additionally examined. The repeated indentation tests provided validations of various mechanisms in the loading and unloading phases of the indentation tests. The results from this study provide some fundamental insights into the interpretation of the nanoindentation behavior and the viscoelastic nature of porous-clastic materials. Some insights on the influence of indentation spacing to depth ratio were also obtained, providing scope for further studies.

Enhanced Mechanical Properties by Ionomeric Complexation in Interpenetrating Network Hydrogels of Hydrolyzed Poly (N-vinyl Formamide) and Polyacrylamide

Tough hydrogels were made by hydrolysis of a neutral interpenetrating network (IPN) of poly (N-vinyl formamide) PNVF and polyacrylamide (PAAm) networks to form an IPN of polyvinylamine (PVAm) and poly (acrylic acid) (PAAc) capable of intermolecular ionic complexation. Single network (SN) PAAm and SN PNVF have similar chemical structures, parameters and physical properties. The hypothesis was that starting with neutral IPN networks of isomeric monomers that hydrolyze to comparable extents under similar conditions would lead to formation of networks with minimal phase separation and maximize potential for charge-charge interactions of the networks. Sequential IPNs of both PNVF/PAAm and PAAm/PNVF were synthesized and were optically transparent, an indication of homogeneity at submicron length scales. Both IPNs were hydrolyzed in base to form PVAm/PAAc and PAAc/PVAm IPNs. These underwent ~5-fold or greater decrease in swelling at intermediate pH values (3-6), consistent with the hypothesis of intermolecular charge complexation, and as hypothesized, the globally neutral, charge-complexed gel states showed substantial increases in failure properties upon compression, including an order of magnitude increases in toughness when compared to their unhydrolyzed states or the swollen states at high or low pH values. There was no loss of mechanical performance upon repeated compression over 95% strain.

Extracellular Vesicles Derived from Primary Adipose Stromal Cells Induce Elastin and Collagen Deposition by Smooth Muscle Cells within 3D Fibrin Gel Culture

Macromolecular components of the vascular extracellular matrix (ECM), particularly elastic fibers and collagen fibers, are critical for the proper physiological function of arteries. When the unique biomechanical combination of these fibers is disrupted, or in the ultimate extreme where fibers are completely lost, arterial disease can emerge. Bioengineers in the realms of vascular tissue engineering and regenerative medicine must therefore ideally consider how to create tissue engineered vascular grafts containing the right balance of these fibers and how to develop regenerative treatments for situations such as an aneurysm where fibers have been lost. Previous work has demonstrated that the primary cells responsible for vascular ECM production during development, arterial smooth muscle cells (SMCs), can be induced to make new elastic fibers when exposed to secreted factors from adipose-derived stromal cells. To further dissect how this signal is transmitted, in this study, the factors were partitioned into extracellular vesicle (EV)-rich and EV-depleted fractions as well as unseparated controls. EVs were validated using electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and protein quantification before testing for biological effects on SMCs. In 2D culture, EVs promoted SMC proliferation and migration. After 30 days of 3D fibrin construct culture, EVs promoted SMC transcription of the elastic microfibril gene FBN1 as well as SMC deposition of insoluble elastin and collagen. Uniaxial biomechanical properties of strand fibrin constructs were no different after 30 days of EV treatment versus controls. In summary, it is apparent that some of the positive effects of adipose-derived stromal cells on SMC elastogenesis are mediated by EVs, indicating a potential use for these EVs in a regenerative therapy to restore the biomechanical function of vascular ECM in arterial disease.

Recent Developments in Nanocellulose-Based Aerogels in Thermal Applications: A Review

Naturally derived nanocellulose (NC) is a renewable, biodegradable nanomaterial with high strength, low density, high surface area, and tunable surface chemistry, which allows its interaction with other polymers and nanomaterials in a controlled manner. In recent years, NC aerogel has gathered a lot of attention due to environmental concerns. This review presents recent developments of NC-based aerogels and their controlled interactions with other polymers and nanomaterials for thermal applications that include electronic devices, the apparel industry, superinsulating materials, and flame-retardant smart building materials. After going through the distinctive properties of NC aerogels, they are orderly categorized and discussed as thermally insulated, thermally conductive, and flame-retardant materials.

Comparative Analysis of Static and Viscoelastic Mechanical Behavior of Different Luting Material Categories after Aging

The longevity of indirect restorations is primarily determined by the appropriate selection of the luting material. The function of a luting material is to seal the restoration and hold it in place for the time required for service. The mechanical behavior of luting materials and in particular their aging behavior, therefore, play a decisive role. The study provides a comparative analysis of the static and dynamic mechanical behavior of the most commonly used luting material categories-zinc phosphate cement, glass-ionomer cement, resin-modified glass-ionomer cement, resin-based composites, and self-adhesive resin-based composites-and their aging behavior. It also takes into account that luting materials are viscoelastic materials, i.e., materials that respond to external loading in a way that lies between an elastic solid and a viscous liquid. Flexural strength and modulus were determined in a three-point bending test followed by fractography analysis. The quasi-static and viscoelastic behavior was analyzed by a depth-sensing indentation test provided with a dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) module at 20 different frequencies (1-50 Hz). The fracture toughness was evaluated in a notchless triangular prism (NTP) test. Material type exhibits the strongest influence on all measured properties, while the effect of aging becomes more evident in the material reliability. The variation of the viscoelastic parameters with aging reflects cement maturation or polymer plasticization.

Use of Vibrational Optical Coherence Tomography to Analyze the Mechanical Properties of Composite Materials

Energy storage and dissipation by composite materials are important design parameters for sensors and other devices. While polymeric materials can reversibly store energy by decreased chain randomness (entropic loss) they fail to be able to dissipate energy effectively and ultimately fail due to fatigue and molecular chain breakage. In contrast, composite tissues, such as muscle and tendon complexes, store and dissipate energy through entropic changes in collagen (energy storage) and viscous losses (energy dissipation) by muscle fibers or through fluid flow of the interfibrillar matrix. In this paper we review the molecular basis for energy storage and dissipation by natural composite materials in an effort to aid in the development of improved substrates for sensors, implants and other commercial devices. In addition, we introduce vibrational optical coherence tomography, a new technique that can be used to follow energy storage and dissipation by composite materials without physically touching them.

Study of Nano-Mechanical Performance of Pretreated Natural Fiber in LDPE Composite for Packaging Applications

In this work, the effects of chemical pretreatment and different fiber loadings on mechanical properties of the composites at the sub-micron scale were studied through nanoindentation. The composites were prepared by incorporating choline chloride (ChCl) pretreated rice husk waste (RHW) in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) using melt processing, followed by a thermal press technique. Nanoindentation experiments with quasi continuous stiffness mode (QCSM) were performed on the surface of produced composites with varying content of pretreated RHW (i.e., 10, 15, and 20 wt.%). Elastic modulus, hardness, and creep properties of fabricated composites were measured as a function of contact depth. The results confirmed the appreciable changes in hardness, elastic modulus, and creep rate of the composites. Compliance curves indicated that the composite having 20 wt.% of pretreated RHW loading was harder compared to that of the pure LDPE and other composite samples. The values of elastic modulus and hardness of the composite containing 20 wt.% pretreated RHW were increased by 4.1% and 24% as compared to that of the pure LDPE, respectively. The creep rate of 42.65 nm/s and change in depth of 650.42 nm were also noted for the composite with RHW loading of 20 wt.%, which showed the substantial effect of holding time at an applied peak load of 100 mN. We believe that the developed composite could be a promising biodegradable packaging material due to its good tribo-mechanical performance.

Macro- and Microscale Properties of the Vitreous Humor to Inform Substitute Design and Intravitreal Biotransport

Research on the vitreous humor and development of hydrogel vitreous substitutes have gained a rapid increase in interest within the past two decades. However, the properties of the vitreous humor and vitreous substitutes have yet to be consolidated. In this paper, the mechanical properties of the vitreous humor and hydrogel vitreous substitutes were systematically reviewed. The number of publications on the vitreous humor and vitreous substitutes over the years, as well as their respective testing conditions and testing techniques were analyzed. The mechanical properties of the human vitreous were found to be most similar to the vitreous of pigs and rabbits. The storage and loss moduli of the hydrogel vitreous substitutes developed were found to be orders of magnitude higher in comparison to the native human vitreous. However, the reported modulus for human vitreous, which was most commonly tested in vitro, has been hypothesized to be different in vivo. Future studies should focus on testing the mechanical properties of the vitreous in situ or in vivo. In addition to its mechanical properties, the vitreous humor has other biotransport mechanisms and biochemical functions that establish a redox balance and maintain an oxygen gradient inside the vitreous chamber to protect intraocular tissues from oxidative damage. Biomimetic hydrogel vitreous substitutes have the potential to provide ophthalmologists with additional avenues for treating and controlling vitreoretinal diseases while preventing complications after vitrectomy. Due to the proximity and interconnectedness of the vitreous humor to other ocular tissues, particularly the lens and the retina, more interest has been placed on understanding the properties of the vitreous humor in recent years. A better understanding of the properties of the vitreous humor will aid in improving the design of biomimetic vitreous substitutes and enhancing intravitreal biotransport.

Altering the Mechanical Load Environment During Growth Does Not Affect Adult Achilles Tendon Properties in an Avian Bipedal Model

Tendon mechanical properties respond to altered load in adults, but how load history during growth affects adult tendon properties remains unclear. To address this question, we adopted an avian model in which we altered the mechanical load environment across the growth span. Animals were divided at 2 weeks of age into three groups: (1) an exercise control group given the opportunity to perform high-acceleration movements (EXE, n = 8); (2) a sedentary group restricted from high-intensity exercise (RES, n = 8); and (3) a sedentary group also restricted from high-intensity exercise and in which the gastrocnemius muscles were partially paralyzed using repeated bouts of botulinum toxin-A injections (RES-BTX, n = 8). Video analysis of bird movement confirmed the restrictions eliminated high-intensity exercise and did not alter time spent walking and sitting between groups. At skeletal maturity (33–35 weeks) animals were sacrificed for analysis, consisting of high-field MRI and material load testing, of both the entire free Achilles tendon and the tendon at the bone-tendon junction. Free tendon stiffness, modulus, and hysteresis were unaffected by variation in load environment. Further, the bone-tendon junction cross-sectional area, stress, and strain were also unaffected by variations in load environment. These results suggest that: (a) a baseline level of low-intensity activity (standing and walking) may be sufficient to maintain tendon growth; and (b) if this lower threshold of tendon load is met, non-mechanical mediated tendon growth may override the load-induced mechanotransduction signal attributed to tendon remodeling in adults of the same species. These results are important for understanding of musculoskeletal function and tendon health in growing individuals.

The Influence of the Third Element on Nano-Mechanical Properties of Iron Borides FeB and Fe2B Formed in Fe-B-X (X = C, Cr, Mn, V, W, Mn + V) Alloys

In this study, the influence of alloying elements on the mechanical properties of iron borides FeB and Fe₂B formed in Fe-B-X (X = C, Cr, Mn, V, W, Mn + V) alloys were evaluated using instrumented indentation measurement. The microstructural characterization of the alloys was performed by means of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray analyzer. The fraction of the phases present in the alloys was determined either by the lever rule or by image analysis. The hardest and stiffest FeB formed in Fe-B-X (X = C, Cr, Mn) alloys was observed in the Fe-B-Cr alloys, where indentation hardness of H_IT = 26.9 ± 1.4 GPa and indentation modulus of E_IT = 486 ± 22 GPa were determined. The highest hardness of Fe₂B was determined in the presence of tungsten as an alloying element, H_IT = 20.8 ± 0.9 GPa. The lowest indentation hardness is measured in manganese alloyed FeB and Fe₂B. In both FeB and Fe₂B, an indentation size effect was observed, showing a decrease of hardness with increasing indentation depth.

From biomechanics to mechanobiology: Xenopus provides direct access to the physical principles that shape the embryo

Features of amphibian embryos that have served so well to elucidate the genetics of vertebrate development also enable detailed analysis of the physics that shape morphogenesis and regulate development. Biophysical tools are revealing how genes control mechanical properties of the embryo. The same tools that describe and control mechanical properties are being turned to reveal how dynamic mechanical information and feedback regulate biological programs of development. In this review we outline efforts to explore the various roles of mechanical cues in guiding cilia biology, axonal pathfinding, goblet cell regeneration, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transitions in neural crest, and mesenchymal-to-epithelial transitions in heart progenitors. These case studies reveal the power of Xenopus experimental embryology to expose pathways integrating mechanical cues with programs of development, organogenesis, and regeneration.

Mechano-vibrational spectroscopy of skin: Are changes in collagen and vascular tissue components early signs of basal cell carcinoma formation?

BACKGROUND

The modulus and resonant frequency of cancer cells and extracellular matrix are increased in both basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, and in addition, the collagen stiffness is increased. The organization of the extracellular matrix surrounding cancer cells is clearly different than the extracellular matrix that is seen in normal skin.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We have used vibrational optical coherence tomography (VOCT) to measure the resonant frequency and stiffness of collagen, vascular, and reorganized fibrous extracellular matrix components. Measurements of vessels and fibrotic collagen content made on basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are compared to similar measurements made on normal skin from different anatomical locations.

RESULTS

Lesions with basal cell carcinomas exhibit characteristic resonant frequencies and moduli of reorganized extracellular matrix characteristic of fibrotic tissue. Cancerous lesions are characterized by dermal collagen (100 Hz), vascular (150 Hz), and fibrotic peaks (200-230 Hz). The fibrotic peak is not found in areas of normal skin.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on this pilot study, it is hypothesized inflammation may promote precancerous lesion formation in the surrounding extracellular matrix. Measurement of the increases in vaculature and fibrotic content may be useful in early detection of BCCs.

Nano-Indentation Response of Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE): A Detailed Analysis

Nano-indentation, a depth sensing technique, is a useful and exciting tool to investigate the surface mechanical properties of a wide range of materials, particularly polymers. Knowledge of the influence of experimental conditions employed during nano-indentation on the resultant nano-mechanical response is very important for the successful design of engineering components with appropriate surface properties. In this work, nano-indentation experiments were carried out by selecting various values of frequency, amplitude, contact depth, strain rate, holding time, and peak load. The results showed a significant effect of amplitude, frequency, and strain rate on the hardness and modulus of the considered polymer, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Load-displacement curves showed a shift towards the lower indentation depths along with an increase in peak load by increasing the indentation amplitude or strain rate. The results also revealed the strong dependence of hardness and modulus on the holding time. The experimental data of creep depth as a function of holding time was successfully fitted with a logarithmic creep model (R² ≥ 0.98). In order to remove the creeping effect and the nose problem, recommended holding times were proposed for the investigated polymer as a function of different applied loads.

Plasticization Effect of Bio-Based Plasticizers from Soybean Oil for Tire Tread Rubber

Modified soybean oil (MSO) is synthesized from soybean oil (SO) and sulfur, aiming to reduce the double bond quantity of SO and avoid harmful effects on the crosslink density and mechanical properties of rubber. MSO modified with different weight percentages of sulfur is then used to plasticize tire tread rubber (TR). It is found that the crosslink density and modulus of MSO- plasticized rubber are significantly improved compared with that of SO-plasticized TR. MSO modified with 6 wt % sulfur (MSO-6%) exhibits the best plasticization effect on TR, thus, the plasticization effect of MSO-6% on TR was further studied by adjusting its additive content. Thereafter, the Mooney viscosity, Payne effect, mechanical property of different amount of MSO-6% plasticized TR are studied to investigate their plasticization effect. At the same additive content of plasticizer, the plasticization effect of MSO-6% and a commonly used aromatic hydrocarbon plasticizer (AO) is compared to determine the potential application of MSO on tire tread rubber. It is found MSO shows similar plasticization effect on TR compared with AO. More important, the aging resistance property and wear resistance property of MSO-6% plasticized rubber are better than those of AO-plasticized rubber. Therefore, MSO-6% is a promising bio-based plasticizer for tire tread rubber.

Mechanical Behavior Investigation of 4H-SiC Single Crystal at the Micro-Nano Scale

In this paper, theoretical models of the critical indentation depth and critical force on brittle materials using cleavage strength and contact theory are proposed. A Berkovich indenter is adopted for nanoindentation tests on a 4H-SiC single crystal sample to evaluate its mechanical behaviors. The stages of brittle material deformation (elastic, plastic, and brittle) can be characterized by the load versus indentation depth curves through the nanoindentation test. The curve of the elastic deformation stage follows the Hertz contact theory, and plastic deformation occurs at an indentation depth of up to 10 nm. The mechanism of 4H-SiC single crystal cracking is discussed, and the critical indentation depth and critical force for the plastic–brittle transition are obtained through the occurrence of the pop-in point. This shows that the theoretical results have good coherence with the test results. Both the values of the elastic modulus and hardness decrease as the crack length increases. In order to obtain more accurate mechanical property values in the nanoindentation test for brittle materials such as SiC, GaN, and sapphire, an appropriate load that avoids surface cracks should be adopted.

Characterization of viscoelastic properties of minced beef meat thawed by ohmic and conventional methods

Frozen minced meat samples having fat contents of 2%, 10% and 18% were thawed using different methods (refrigeration thawing at ambient temperature of +4 ℃, under running cold water (+4 ℃) thawing, ohmic thawing for 10, 13 and 16 V/cm). Viscoelastic properties were determined by using rheological tests (oscillation and creep/recovery tests). Storage modulus, loss modulus, complex modulus, loss tangent, dynamic viscosity and complex viscosity values of minced meat samples increased as fat content increased. As frequency value increased, the modulus values of meat samples increased but dynamic and complex viscosity values of the samples decreased. The minced meat samples thawed by different methods had recoverable compliance values. The compliance values of meat samples during creep region can be well characterized by Burgers model. Ohmic thawing can be used as an alternative thawing method since it resulted in similar rheological properties of minced meat samples compared to refrigeration thawing at ambient temperature of +4 ℃ and under running cold water (+4℃) thawing.

Nanofibrillar Ionic Polymer Composites Enable High-Modulus Ion-Conducting Membranes

Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) with high volume fractions of ionic liquids (IL) and high modulus show promise for enabling next-generation gas separations, and electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications. Herein, we present a conductive polymer-IL composite based on a sulfonated all-aromatic polyamide (sulfo-aramid, PBDT) and a model IL, which we term a PBDT-IL composite. The polymer forms glassy and high-aspect-ratio hierarchical nanofibrils, which enable fabrication of PEMs with both high volume fractions of IL and high elastic modulus. We report direct evidence for nanofibrillar networks that serve as matrices for dispersed ILs using atomic force microscopy and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering. These supramolecular nanofibrils form through myriad noncovalent interactions to produce a physically cross-linked glassy network, which boasts the best combination of room-temperature modulus (0.1-2 GPa) and ionic conductivity (8-4 mS cm^-1) of any polymer-IL electrolyte reported to date. The ultrahigh thermomechanical properties of our PBDT-IL composites provide high moduli (∼1 GPa) at temperatures up to 200 °C, enabling a wide device operation window with stable mechanical properties. Together, the high-performance nature of sulfo-aramids in concert with the inherent properties of ILs imparts PBDT-IL composites with nonflammability and thermal stability up to 350 °C. Thus, nanofibrillar ionic networks based on sulfo-aramids and ILs represent a new design paradigm affording PEMs with exceptionally high moduli at exceedingly low polymer concentrations. This new design strategy will drive the development of new high-performance conductive membranes that can be used for the design of gas separation membranes and in electrochemical applications, such as fuel cells and Li-metal batteries.

A review of the rheological properties of dilute and concentrated food emulsions

Rheology is a powerful and versatile analytical tool for providing information about changes in the composition, structure, and interactions of food emulsions. Moreover, an understanding of emulsion rheology is essential for designing efficient food processing operations and emulsion-based foods with the desired physicochemical, sensory, and nutritional attributes, such as appearance, texture, flavor, shelf life, and bioavailability. This article provides a brief overview of the current understanding of food emulsions, with a focus on how their viscosity is related to the properties of the emulsion droplets present.

Comparative "virtual biopsies" of normal skin and skin lesions using vibrational optical coherence tomography

BACKGROUND

Increased tissue stiffness (also termed modulus) has been shown to be a characteristic of potential tumor metastasis. Measured values of the stiffness of tumors and cancer cells are reported in the literature to increase compared to neighboring normal tissues. Yet the relationship between the mechanical properties of cells and the extracellular matrix has yet to be correlated with the histopathology of cancerous lesions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We have developed a technique to do virtual biopsies of skin lesions by combining images made using optical coherence tomography with stiffness measurements made simultaneously using vibrational analysis. The technique is termed vibrational optical coherence tomography (VOCT).

RESULTS

In this paper, we report that precancerous and cancerous lesions are characterized by changes in both the morphology and stiffness of the cellular components of the skin. The ratio of the peak heights that correspond to the epidermal (40-60Hz) and dermal (140-160 Hz) resonant frequencies appear to be different for benign and cancerous or precancerous lesions compared with normal skin and scar.

CONCLUSIONS

Cell-to-cell and epidermal-to-dermal interactions may be very important in evaluating the potential of skin lesions to become malignant. These interactions can be evaluated using VOCT, a new technique for performing "virtual biopsies" of skin lesions.

High-Density Molded Cellulose Fibers and Transparent Biocomposites Based on Oriented Holocellulose

Ecofriendly materials based on well-preserved and nanostructured wood cellulose fibers are investigated for the purpose of load-bearing applications, where optical transmittance may be advantageous. Wood fibers are subjected to mild delignification, flow orientation, and hot-pressing to form an oriented material of low porosity. The biopolymer composition of the fibers is determined. Their morphology is studied by scanning electron microscopy, cellulose orientation is quantified by X-ray diffraction, and the effect of beating is investigated. Hot-pressed networks are impregnated by a methyl methacrylate monomer and polymerized to form thermoplastic wood fiber/poly(methyl methacrylate) biocomposites. Tensile tests are performed, as well as optical transmittance measurements. Structure-property relationships are discussed. High-density molded fibers from holocellulose have mechanical properties comparable with nanocellulose materials and are recyclable. The thermoplastic matrix biocomposites showed superior mechanical properties (Young's modulus of 20 GPa and ultimate strength of 310 MPa) at a fiber volume fraction of 52%, with high optical transmittance of 90%. The study presents a scalable approach for strong, stiff, and transparent molded fibers/biocomposites.

Mechanistic Understanding of Cu-CHA Catalyst as Sensor for Direct NH3-SCR Monitoring: The Role of Cu Mobility

The concept to utilize a catalyst directly as a sensor is fundamentally and technically attractive for a number of catalytic applications, in particular, for the catalytic abatement of automotive emission. Here, we explore the potential of microporous copper-exchanged chabazite (Cu-CHA, including Cu-SSZ-13 and Cu-SAPO-34) zeolite catalysts, which are used commercially in the selective catalytic reduction of automotive nitrogen oxide emission by NH₃ (NH₃-SCR), as impedance sensor elements to monitor directly the NH₃-SCR process. The NH₃-SCR sensing behavior of commercial Cu-SSZ-13 and Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts at typical reaction temperatures (i.e., 200 and 350 °C) was evaluated according to the change of ionic conductivity and was mechanistically investigated by complex impedance-based in situ modulus spectroscopy. Short-range (local) movement of Cu ions within the zeolite structure was found to determine largely the NH₃-SCR sensing behavior of both catalysts. Formation of NH₃-solvated, highly mobile Cu^I species showed a predominant influence on the ionic conductivity of both catalysts and, consequently, hindered NH₃-SCR sensing at 200 °C. Density functional theory calculations over a model Cu-SAPO-34 system revealed that Cu^II reduction to Cu^I by coadsorbed NH₃ and NO weakened significantly the coordination of the Cu site to the CHA framework, enabling high mobility of Cu^I species that influences substantially the NH₃-SCR sensing. The in situ spectroscopic and theoretical investigations not only unveil the mechanisms of Cu-CHA catalyst as sensor elements for direct NH₃-SCR monitoring but also allow us to get insights into the speciation of active Cu sites in NH₃-SCR under different reaction conditions with varied temperatures and gas compositions.
