Towards π-wires on a semiconductor surface: Benzyne on Si(001)

Towards the goal of covalently bound molecular wires on silicon, the adsorption of benzyne on Si(001) was studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and density functional calculations (DFT). The benzyne molecule is found to adsorb preferentially via the strained triple bond on one dimer of the Si(001) surface which results in an intact π system covalently bound to the surface. With increasing coverage, the molecules primarily adsorb along the dimer rows; on stepped surfaces, these molecular wires are all oriented in the same direction.

Accelerated Deep Learning Dynamics for Atomic Layer Deposition of Al(Me)3 and Water on OH/Si(111)

Knowledge of the detailed mechanism behind the atomic layer deposition (ALD) can greatly facilitate the optimization of the manufacturing process. Computational modeling can potentially foster the understanding; however, the presently available capabilities of the accurate ab initio computational techniques preclude their application to modeling surface processes occurring on a long time scale, such as ALD. Although the situation can be greatly improved using machine learning (ML), this technique requires an enormous amount of data for training datasets. Here, we propose an iterative protocol for optimizing ML training datasets and apply ML-assisted ab initio calculations to model surface reactions occurring during the Al(Me)₃/H₂O ALD process on the OH-terminated Si (111) surface. The protocol uses a recently developed low-dimensional projection technique (TDUS), greatly reducing the amount of information required to achieve high accuracy (ca. 1 kcal/mol or less) of the developed ML models. The resulting free energy landscapes reveal fine details of various aspects of the target ALD process, such as the surface proton transfer, zwitterionic surface configurations, elimination-addition/addition-elimination, and S_N2 reactions as well as the role of the surface entropic and temperature effects. Simulations of adsorption dynamics predict that the maximum physisorption rate of ca. 70% is achieved at the incidence velocity u_rms of the reactants in the range of 15-20 Å/ps. Hence, the proposed protocol furnishes a very effective tool to study complex chemical reaction dynamics at a much reduced computational cost.

Nanoscale pattern formation on silicon surfaces bombarded with a krypton ion beam: experiments and simulations

The nanoscale patterns produced by bombardment of the (100) surface of silicon with a 2 keV Kr ion beam are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. In our experiments, we find that the patterns observed at high ion fluences depend sensitively on the angle of incidence Θ. For Θ values between 74° and 85°, we observe five decidedly different kinds of morphologies, including triangular nanostructures traversed by parallel-mode ripples, long parallel ridges decorated by short-wavelength ripples, and a remarkable mesh-like morphology. In contrast, only parallel-mode ripples are present for low ion fluences except for Θ = 85°. Our simulations show that triangular nanostructures that closely resemble those in our experiments emerge if a linearly dispersive term and a conserved Kuramoto-Sivashinsky nonlinearity are appended to the usual equation of motion. We find ridges traversed by ripples, on the other hand, in simulations of the Harrison-Pearson-Bradley equation (Harrisonet al2017Phys. Rev.E96032804). For Θ = 85°, the solid surface is apparently stable and simulations of an anisotropic Edwards-Wilkinson equation yield surfaces similar to those seen in our experiments. Explaining the other two kinds of patterns we find in our experiments remains a challenge for future theoretical work.

Effect of Electrolytic Medium on the Electrochemical Reduction of Graphene Oxide on Si(111) as Probed by XPS

The wafer-scale integration of graphene is of great importance in view of its numerous applications proposed or underway. A good graphene–silicon interface requires the fine control of several parameters and may turn into a high-cost material, suitable for the most advanced applications. Procedures that can be of great use for a wide range of applications are already available, but others are to be found, in order to modulate the offer of different types of materials, at different levels of sophistication and use. We have been exploring different electrochemical approaches over the last 5 years, starting from graphene oxide and resulting in graphene deposited on silicon-oriented surfaces, with the aim of understanding the reactions leading to the re-establishment of the graphene network. Here, we report how a proper choice of both the chemical environment and electrochemical conditions can lead to a more controlled and tunable graphene–Si(111) interface. This can also lead to a deeper understanding of the electrochemical reactions involved in the evolution of graphene oxide to graphene under electrochemical reduction. Results from XPS, the most suitable tool to follow the presence and fate of functional groups at the graphene surface, are reported, together with electrochemical and Raman findings.

Alkyne-Functionalized Cyclooctyne on Si(001): Reactivity Studies and Surface Bonding from an Energy Decomposition Analysis Perspective

The reactivity and bonding of an ethinyl-functionalized cyclooctyne on Si(001) is studied by means of density functional theory. This system is promising for the organic functionalization of semiconductors. Singly bonded adsorption structures are obtained by [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions of the cyclooctyne or ethinyl group with the Si(001) surface. A thermodynamic preference for adsorption with the cyclooctyne group in the on-top position is found and traced back to minimal structural deformation of the adsorbate and surface with the help of energy decomposition analysis for extended systems (pEDA). Starting from singly bonded structures, a plethora of reaction paths describing conformer changes and consecutive reactions with the surface are discussed. Strongly exothermic and exergonic reactions to doubly bonded structures are presented, while small reaction barriers highlight the high reactivity of the studied organic molecule on the Si(001) surface. Dynamic aspects of the competitive bonding of the functional groups are addressed by ab initio molecular dynamics calculations. Several trajectories for the doubly bonded structures are obtained in agreement with calculations using the nudged elastic band approach. However, our findings disagree with the experimental observations of selective adsorption by the cyclooctyne moiety, which is critically discussed.

Tip-induced-hydrogen dissociation in an alkyl group bound on Si(001)

Atomic-scale chemical modification of surface-adsorbed ethyl groups on Si(001) was induced and studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy. Tunneling at sample bias >+1.5 V leads to tip-induced C-H cleavage of aβ-hydrogen of the covalently bound ethyl configuration. The reaction is characterized by the formation of an additional Si-H and a Si-C bond. The reaction probability shows a linear dependence on the tunneling current at 300 K; the reaction is largely suppressed at 50 K. The observed tip-induced surface reaction at room temperature is thus attributed to a one-electron excitation in combination with thermal activation.

Silicon surface assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry for quantitative analysis

The approach to quantitative analysis by silicon Surface Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry (Si-SALDI) is proposed. The approach is based on the new method for forming an active surface layer on a silicon substrate by exposing to laser radiation directly in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The method can be used repeatedly on the same substrate, providing high reproducibility of its surface ionization properties and high ionization efficiency of organic compounds. Within the proposed approach, the methods of improvement of signal reproducibility are also considered, including continuous monitoring of the silicon surface ionization properties using a Knudsen effusion cell; scanning the surface of a silicon substrate with a laser beam; selecting the optimal value of laser fluence and using a reproducible sample introduction technique. It is demonstrated that this approach can be successfully applied to quantify clinically relevant concentrations of pharmaceutical drugs in extracts of blood.

Combined XPS and DFT investigation of the adsorption modes of methyl enol ether functionalized cyclooctyne on Si(001)

The reaction of methyl enol ether functionalized cyclooctyne on the silicon (001) surface was investigated by means of X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT). Three different groups of final states were identified; all of them bind on Si(001) via the strained triple bond of cyclooctyne but they differ in the configuration of the methyl enol ether group. The majority of molecules adsorbs without additional reaction of the enol ether group; the relative contribution of this configuration to the total coverage depends on substrate temperature and coverage. Further configurations include enol ether groups which reacted on the silicon surface either via ether cleavage or enol ether groups which transformed on the surface into a carbonyl group.

Systematic Degradation Rate Analysis of Surface-Functionalized Porous Silicon Nanoparticles

Porous silicon nanoparticles (pSiNPs) have been utilized within a wide spectrum of biological studies, as well as in chemistry, chemical biology, and biomedical fields. Recently, pSiNPs have been constantly coming under the spotlight, mostly in biomedical applications, due to their advantages, such as controlled-release drug delivery in vivo by hydrolysis-induced degradation, self-reporting property through long life-time photoluminescence, high loading efficiency of substrate into pore, and the homing to specific cells/organ/bacteria by surface functionalization. However, the systematic degradation rate analysis of surface-functionalized pSiNPs in different biological media has not been conducted yet. In this paper, we prepared four different surface-functionalized pSiNPs samples and analyzed the degradation rate in six different media (DI H₂O (deionized water), PBS (phosphate-buffered saline), HS (human serum), DMEM (Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium), LB (lysogeny broth), and BHI (brain heart infusion)). The obtained results will now contribute to understanding the correlation between surface functionalization in the pSiNPs and the degradation rate in different biological media. The characterized data with the author’s suggestions will provide useful insights in designing the new pSiNPs formulation for biomedical applications.

A Mini Review: Recent Advances in Surface Modification of Porous Silicon

Porous silicon has been utilized within a wide spectrum of industries, as well as being used in basic research for engineering and biomedical fields. Recently, surface modification methods have been constantly coming under the spotlight, mostly in regard to maximizing its purpose of use. Within this review, we will introduce porous silicon, the experimentation preparatory methods, the properties of the surface of porous silicon, and both more conventional as well as newly developed surface modification methods that have assisted in attempting to overcome the many drawbacks we see in the existing methods. The main aim of this review is to highlight and give useful insight into improving the properties of porous silicon, and create a focused description of the surface modification methods.

Binding Energy and Dissociation Barrier: Experimental Determination of the Key Parameters of the Potential Energy Curve of Diethyl Ether on Si(001)

The key parameters of the potential energy curve of organic molecules on semiconductor surfaces, binding energy of the intermediate state and dissociation barrier, were experimentally investigated for the model system of diethyl ether (Et2O) on Si(001). Et2O adsorbs via a datively bonded intermediate from which it converts via ether cleavage into a covalently attached final state. This thermally activated conversion into the final state was followed in real-time by means of optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) at different temperatures and the associated energy barrier ϵa = 0.38 ± 0.05 eV and pre-exponential factor νa = 10(4±1) s(-1) were determined. From molecular beam experiments on the initial sticking probability, the difference between the desorption energy ϵd and ϵa was extracted and thus the binding energy of the intermediate state was determined (0.62 ± 0.08 eV). The results are discussed in terms of general chemical trends as well as with respect to a wider applicability on adsorbate reactions on semiconductor surfaces.

In situ metalation of free base phthalocyanine covalently bonded to silicon surfaces

Free 4-undecenoxyphthalocyanine molecules were covalently bonded to Si(100) and porous silicon through thermic hydrosilylation of the terminal double bonds of the undecenyl chains. The success of the anchoring strategy on both surfaces was demonstrated by the combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with control experiments performed adopting the commercially available 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(octyloxy)-29H,31H-phthalocyanine, which is not suited for silicon anchoring. Moreover, the study of the shape of the XPS N 1s band gave relevant information on the interactions occurring between the anchored molecules and the substrates. The spectra suggest that the phthalocyanine ring interacts significantly with the flat Si surface, whilst ring-surface interactions are less relevant on porous Si. The surface-bonded molecules were then metalated in situ with Co by using wet chemistry. The efficiency of the metalation process was evaluated by XPS measurements and, in particular, on porous silicon, the complexation of cobalt was confirmed by the disappearance in the FTIR spectra of the band at 3290 cm(-1) due to -NH stretches. Finally, XPS results revealed that the different surface-phthalocyanine interactions observed for flat and porous substrates affect the efficiency of the in situ metalation process.
