Clinical and ultrasonographic findings of ovarian tumours in bitches: A retrospective study

A retrospective study was carried out to investigate incidence, clinical signs and ultrasonographic findings of ovarian tumours in a population of dogs referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Perugia (Italy) and Anicura Tyrus Veterinary Clinic (Terni, Italy). The period of study ranged from January 2005 to December 2021. A total of 1910 dogs were affected by neoplasia but only 35 of them (1.8%), of different breeds and ages, were found to have ovarian tumours. Ultrasound of the ovaries was performed based on clinical signs; the diagnosis was achieved after ultrasound findings prompted ovariohysterectomy and ovarian pathologic evaluation In our study, the age of bitches affected by ovarian neoplasia ranged from 3 to 20 years (mean 9.6 ± 3.8). The histopathological findings of ovarian masses identified 16 granulosa cell tumours (GCT) (46%), 7 adenomas (20%), 5 adenocarcinomas (14%), 2 teratomas (6%), 1 leiomyoma (3%), 1 luteoma (3%), 1 tecoma (3%), 1 dysgerminoma (3%), and 1 haemangiosarcoma (3%). In particular, with respect to clinical signs, 69% of bitches showed abnormalities of estrus cycle (short interestral interval, persistent estrus, prolonged interestral interval). The other main clinical signs included abdominal distention, palpable abdominal mass, vulvovaginal discharge, polyuria/polydipsia, mammary masses. When present, the laboratory abnormalities were slight anemia and leucocytosis with neutrophilia. The tumours were ultrasonographically classified as mainly solid: 12/35 (34%) (1 adenoma, 4 adenocarcinomas, 1 dysgerminoma, 1 haemangiosarcoma, 1 leyomioma, 1 luteoma, 1 GCT, 1 tecoma, 1 teratoma); solid with cystic component 13/35 (37%) (9 GCT, 2 Adenomas, 1 adenocarcinoma, 1 teratoma); and mainly cystic 10/35 (29%) (6 GCTs, 4 adenomas). In our study, the ultrasound examination allowed us to suspect ovarian neoplasia in asymptomatic subjects referred for breeding management or for preventive health check. On the basis of our data, we proposed to perform a complete periodic examination of the reproductive system once a year from 6 years. Nevertheless, the presence of ovarian neoplasms found in young subjects, during breeding management, suggest including routine ultrasound examination of the reproductive tract.

Canine ovarian gonadoblastoma with dysgerminoma overgrowth: a case study and literature review

BACKGROUND

Gonadoblastoma (GB) is a rare mixed germ cell-sex cord-stromal tumour, first described in humans, commonly found in dysgenetic gonads of intersex patients that have a Y chromosome. However, this entity in not recognized in the WHO classification of tumours of genital system of domestic animals. Herein, we describe a case of ovarian gonadoblastoma with proliferation of dysgerminoma and sex cord-stromal tumour components, in a phenotypically and cytogenetically normal bitch.

CASE PRESENTATION

A 17-year-old cross-breed bitch had a firm, grey-white multinodular mass in the left ovary. The tumour was submitted to histopathological examination and Y chromosome detected through karyotype analysis and PCR studies. Microscopically, the ovary was almost replaced by an irregular neoplasm composed of three distinct, intermixed elements: dysgerminoma, mixed germ cell-sex cord-stromal tumour resembling human GB and a proliferative sex cord-stromal tumour component. The germ cells of gonadoblastoma and dysgerminoma components were immunoreactive for c-KIT. Sex cord-stromal cells of gonadoblastoma were immunoreactive for α-inhibin. The sex cord-stromal tumour was immunoreactive for AE1/AE3, occasionally for α-inhibin and negative for epithelial membrane antigen (EMA). The karyotype was 78, XX and PCR analysis confirmed the absence of the Y chromosome.

CONCLUSION

Based on these findings, a diagnosis of gonadoblastoma with proliferation of dysgerminoma and sex cord-stromal tumour was made. This is the first case of ovarian gonadoblastoma in a female dog.

Ovarian dysgerminomas in two mountain chicken frogs (Leptodactylus fallax)

This report describes the gross, histologic, and immunohistochemical features of ovarian dysgerminomas in two adult female mountain chicken frogs (Leptodactylusfallax) from the same zoological institution. One frog was found dead, and the other frog had been ill for several days with a bloated abdomen and lethargy. On necropsy, large, pale multilobulated masses replaced the left ovary in both frogs, and one frog also had numerous smaller nodules scattered throughout the coelomic viscera. Histologically, these masses were composed of sheets and cords of polyhedral discrete germ cells consistent with the diagnosis of dysgerminoma. Neoplastic cells stained positive with immunohistochemistry for Oct4, which has been reported to detect stem cells including germ cells in a variety of species, including humans. Ovarian tumors are uncommonly encountered in both reptiles and amphibians, and this report is the first report of dysgerminoma in any amphibian species.

Intra-abdominal mass aspirate from an alopecic dog

An 11-year-old female Yorkshire terrier was presented to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center for evaluation of a palpable intra-abdominal mass and alopecia. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a large, complex, cavitary mass in the left caudal region of the abdomen. A fine needle aspirate of the mass was collected. A population of markedly pleomorphic, large, round to polygonal cells were found singly and in small noncohesive aggregates. The cells contained scant, clear to blue-gray cytoplasm, large, round to oval nuclei, and distinctly stippled to reticular chromatin. Cytologic findings were consistent with a tumor of ovarian origin, with a primary differential diagnosis of germ cell tumor. Hormonal analysis of serum revealed a marked increase in 14-OH-progesterone concentration (2.71 ng/mL, reference interval 0.05-0.69 ng/mL). Ovariohysterectomy was performed, and the mass was found to be in the area of the left ovary. Histologic evaluation of the reproductive tract confirmed a diagnosis of left ovarian dysgerminoma. Based on immunohistochemical stains, the tumor was negative for c-kit (CD117c) and single cells were positive for neuron-specific enolase. A right ovarian cyst and squamous metaplasia of the right uterine horn also were diagnosed. The cyst was presumed to be the source of 14-OH-progesterone, which likely resulted in the squamous metaplasia and dermatopathy. Three months after surgery, the progesterone concentration had returned to normal and the alopecia had nearly resolved. Dysgerminomas in dogs are reported rarely, but have a distinctive, recognizable, cytologic appearance and should be included in the differential diagnosis of an intra-abdominal mass in a reproductively intact female dog.

Cytological features of canine ovarian tumours: a retrospective study of 19 cases

The cytological features of 19 histologically confirmed canine ovarian tumours were retrospectively examined. Seven cases were cytologically classified as papillary adenocarcinoma, eight cases as granulosa cell tumours, two cases as mature ovarian teratomas, one case as a dysgerminoma and one case as a mixed granulosa cell tumour/dysgerminoma. On cytology, papillary adenocarcinoma was characterised by a papillary glandular pattern and tight cohesiveness. Granulosa cell tumours showed monolayered clusters of loosely cohesive granulosa cells. Call-Exner-like bodies were found in five of seven cases. Granulosa cells appeared to be heterogeneous and usually contained several intracytoplasmic vacuoles. Teratoma was characterised cytologically by keratin debris (two cases) and a mixture of epithelial cells with sebaceous, basaloid, columnar/palisading or ciliated appearance (one case). The dysgerminoma contained severely atypical round cells admixed with small lymphocytes. The mixed dysgerminoma/granulosa cell tumour had a mixture of germinal and granulosa cells. Cytological diagnosis was in agreement with histopathology in 18 of 19 (94.7 per cent) cases.

Intracranial metastases from an ovarian dysgerminoma in a 2-year-old dog

A 2-year-old, intact female rottweiler was presented for signs of lethargy. A mass was ultrasonographically observed, cranial and lateral to the left kidney. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a mass in the left ovary that was diagnosed histopathologically as an ovarian dysgerminoma. Two weeks after surgery, the dog was readmitted with signs of peripheral vestibular disease that progressed to central vestibular disease. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed the presence of a mass in the caudal fossa. The histopathological diagnosis of the mass was metastases from the ovarian dysgerminoma.

Immunoreactivity of A103, an antibody to Melan A, in canine steroid-producing tissues and their tumors

The monoclonal antibody A103 to the melanocytic differentiation antigen Melan A stains human steroid-producing cells and their tumors. A total of 200 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded canine normal tissues and hyperplastic and neoplastic lesions of the adrenal gland, testis, and ovary were immunohistochemically tested for Melan A with antibody A103. Leydig cell tumors (23/23, 100%), Sertoli cell tumors (14/15, 93%), and adrenocortical adenomas (12/13, 92%) were consistently positive. Adrenocortical carcinomas (23/35, 65%) and granulosa cell tumors (10/17, 59%) were less frequently positive. All pheochromocytomas, seminomas, and dysgerminomas were negative. The pattern of staining was cytoplasmic, but nuclear staining was also frequently seen in normal Leydig cells and their tumors. As in human tumors, immunohistochemistry for Melan A stains many canine steroid-producing tumors and can be used to distinguish these tumors from those of nonstereidogenic cells.

Dysgerminoma in an Arabian filly

A yearling Arabian filly was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with a history of weight loss, profound anemia, and peritoneal effusion. At necropsy, a large, soft, mottled tan and red neoplastic mass was at the pelvic inlet replacing the left ovary. Additional tumor nodules of various sizes were disseminated throughout the mesentery, diaphragm, and serosal surfaces of the abdominal viscera. Histologically, the neoplasm had sheets of large round to polygonal cells separated into lobules by fibrous connective tissue with multifocal areas of necrosis. Tumor cells stained strongly for alkaline phosphatase. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells expressed vimentin and were negative for cytokeratin. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells had a characteristic nucleolus with an elaborate reticular nucleolonema in an irregular configuration. This is the first in-depth detailed report of this very rare germ cell tumor of the ovary in horses.

Report of dysgerminoma in the ovaries of a snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) with discussion of ovarian neoplasms reported in reptilians and women

A malnourished, captive, young adult (weight-11 kg, carapace length-25 cm), female snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) was presented for examination and treatment of malnutrition and multiple carapace necroses. Because treatment was unsuccessful, the animal was euthanatized and necropsied. The main necropsy observations showed the presence of a 9 cm greyish-white/yellow, soft, fleshy to fatlike mass involving the right ovary near the oviduct opening and multiple similar, pea-to-walnut sized masses involving both ovaries. Microscopic examination of formalin fixed, hematoxylin and eosin and silver stained tissue sections revealed the masses to be composed of primordial germ cells arranged in a pattern morphologically compatible with dysgerminoma as described in women and other mammals. Very rarely have ovarian neoplasms been reported in turtles or other reptiles. This is the first neoplasm described in the snapping turtle ovary and the first dysgerminoma reported in reptilians. A tabulation of previously documented ovarian neoplasia in reptiles and a comparison of this cancer to those occurring in women will be discussed.

Spontaneous seminoma in an owl monkey in captivity

An adult male Aotus nancymae maintained for breeding purposes was submitted for surgery and the left testicle was removed. The surgically removed mass was about two to three times the size of a normal adult owl monkey testicle. Grossly, on cut surface, the mass was soft, white to pale gray, and bulged above the adjacent tissue. Microscopically, the morphology of the tumor cells was consistent with a seminoma.

Ultrasonographic features of testicular neoplasia in dogs: 16 cases (1980-1988)

For 16 dogs with testicular neoplasia (n = 19 tumors), ultrasonography was performed to determine whether a correlation exists between ultrasonographic features of testicular tumors and cell type. The echogenicity of the tumors varied depending on the size of the tumor and whether the tumor had focal or diffuse distribution within the testis. The ultrasonographic characteristics of Sertoli cell tumors were variable, with no predominant pattern. This variation may be related to tumor size, because 6 of 7 Sertoli cell tumors were greater than 5 cm in diameter. Focal seminomas and interstitial cell tumors less than 3 cm in diameter had hypoechoic texture. Focal seminomas and interstitial cell tumors greater than 3 cm in diameter had mixed echogenicity. Tumors of multiple cell types were greater than 5 cm in diameter and had mixed echogenicity. In valuable breeding dogs with a small (less than 3 cm) focal intrascrotal lesion, testicular ultrasonography would be of benefit for localization of the mass to the testis or epididymis for subsequent biopsy. In dogs with intraabdominal neoplastic testes, ultrasonography may be of benefit in determining intra-abdominal metastases and invasion of contiguous structures.

Spontaneous ovarian tumour in a medaka (Oryzias latipes)

Swelling of the abdomen was found in an adult female medaka (Oryzias latipes). Multiple tumour masses occupying most of the abdominal cavity were found at necropsy. Histologically, the tumour consisted of homogeneous round cells arranged in islands and occasional trabecular structures with thin capsules. Ova at various stages of maturation were seen in the periphery of the tumour mass. Metastasis was observed in the vicinity of the thyroid gland with accompanying infiltration by lymphocytic cells and also abdominal muscles. The tumour cells were characterized by a large ovoid nucleus with no aggregation of heterochromatin, occasional mitotic figures and prominent nucleoli. Examination by electron microscopy showed cells with scant cytoplasm but many ribosomes and a few other organelles. Annulate lamellae and dense cytoplasmic masses were also frequently observed. Based on the above features, the tumour was diagnosed as an ovarian dysgerminoma, the first reported case in a medaka.

Germinomas and teratoid siphon anomalies in softshell clams, Mya arenaria, environmentally exposed to herbicides

Seminomas and dysgerminomas are epizootic in softshell clams, Mya arenaria, from three Maine estuaries contaminated with herbicides. The first epizootic was discovered in 22% of clams collected as Searsport near Long Cove Brook and three culverts that conveyed heating oil and jet fuel spilled from a tank farm in 1971. Data from subsequent epizootiological studies and a series of long-term experimental exposures of softshell clams to no. 2 fuel oil, JP-4, and JP-5 jet fuel at the U.S. EPA, Environmental Research Laboratory in Narragansett, Rhode Island, and in the field did not support an etiology by these petroleum products. In the two recent epizootics reported here, the germinomas have been observed in 3% of the softshell clams collected from Roque Bluffs near Machiasport and from 35% of softshell clams collected from Dennysville. Mya collected at Dennysville had pericardial mesotheliomas and teratoid siphon anomalies in addition to gonadal neoplasms. Estuaries at Dennysville had been contaminated by herbicides in a 1979 accidental spray overdrift during aerial application of Tordon 101 to adjacent forests. Further investigation determined widespread use of the herbicides Tordon 101, 2,4-D,2,4,5-T, and other agrochemicals in an extensive forestry and blueberry industry in both the Roque Bluffs and the Dennysville areas. Herbicide applications at Searsport were confirmed for railroad property bordering Long Cove estuary and for Long Cove Brook adjacent to the estuary where a highway department reportedly cleans its spray equipment. Herbicide contamination is the only common denominator identified at all three sites where Mya have been found with gonadal neoplasms.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Excess of seminomas observed in Vietnam service U.S. military working dogs

During the Vietnam War, US military working dogs served with their companion dog handlers in close proximity, sharing common exposures to war-related activity, many zoonotic infectious agents, chemical pesticides, phenoxy herbicides, and extensive use of therapeutic drugs. To gain insight into the effects of the Vietnam experience, we investigated the occurrence of neoplasms in military working dogs based on standard necropsy examination by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. We observed that these dogs experienced significant elevated risks for testicular seminoma and, independently, testicular dysfunction. Experimental evidence shows testicular dysfunction and impaired spermatogenesis in laboratory animals exposed to phenoxy herbicides, dioxin, or tetracycline, and antibiotic used extensively in military working dogs in Vietnam. Because an unexplained significant decrease in sperm quality in Vietnam veterans has been observed by the Centers for Disease Control, further research is warranted if we are to clarify military service in Vietnam as a risk factor for testicular dysfunction. The testis should be made a priority site in the study of Vietnam experience-related cancers.

Malignant seminoma in a cryptorchid stallion

A 16-year-old cryptorchid Quarter House with colic had a large, lobulated soft-tissue mass to the left of the pelvic inlet. At surgery, 2 large multilobulated pedunculated masses were removed. A large blood vessel enveloped by one of the masses was damaged, and the horse exsanguinated. Postmortem examination of the abdomen revealed the masses to be malignant seminoma, with multiple sites of metastasis.

Seminoma and parathyroid adenoma in a snow leopard (Panthera unica)

A seminoma and parathyroid adenoma were diagnosed in an aged snow leopard. The ultrastructural appearance of the seminoma was similar to that described in the dog and in man. The lack of significant amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complexes and free ribosomes in the parathyroid adenoma suggested that it was non-functional. Parathyroid adenoma has not been previously described in a large wild feline.

A testicular seminoma in a rabbit

The histological, ultrastructural and biological features are described of a spontaneously occurring seminoma in the testis of a male domestic rabbit. The tumour was structurally similar to seminomas in other animal species.

Canine testicular tumors in descended and cryptorchid testes

A comparative study of canine testicular tumors in descended and cryptorchid testes was performed in order to associate pathologic features with clinical signs. Observation on 80 canine testicular tumors revealed the following distribution: in undescended testes, 4 tumors were classified as Seminomas (mean age: 8.8 +/- 3 years) and 14 as Sertoli cell tumors (8.7 +/- 1.7 years); in descended testes, 21 tumors were classified as seminomas (8.8 +/- 3 years), 13 as Sertoli cell tumors (9.8 +/- 1.8 years), 22 as Leydig cell tumors (11.5 +/- 2 years), 5 multiple primary tumors and 1 as an immunoblastic lymphoma. Histological features were studied and correlated with other clinical parameters: feminization manifestations, prostatic disease, perineal hernia and perianal gland tumor.

Radiotherapy of metastatic seminoma in the dog. Case reports

Four dogs with metastatic seminoma were treated with cesium 137 teleradiotherapy. Minimum total tumor dose ranged from 17 to 40 gray (Gy) and was usually given through bilateral opposing sublumbar ports in eight to ten fractions, with three fractions given weekly. The tumor regressed in all four dogs. The first dog (case 1) was free of tumor and died of non-tumor related causes at 57 months. The second dog (case 2) was free of tumor but was euthanatized at 37 months for a limb fracture. The third dog (case 3) was euthanatized for undertermined pulmonary disease 43 months after radiotherapy. The fourth dog (case 4) was euthanatized 6 months following radiotherapy because of transitional cell carcinoma and renal failure. No evidence of seminoma was found at necropsy. Radiotherapy was shown to be effective treatment for seminoma with regional metastasis.

Canine ovarian neoplasms: a clinicopathologic study of 71 cases, including histology of 12 granulosa cell tumors

In a retrospective study of 71 primary ovarian tumors in the dog, epithelial tumors (46%) were more common than sex cord stromal (34%) and germ cell tumors (20%). There were more adenocarcinomas (64%) than adenomas. Sex cord stromal tumors were equally divided into Sertoli-Leydig (12/24) and granulosa cell tumors (12/24). There were equal numbers (7/14) of dysgerminomas and teratomas among the germ cell tumors. Most teratomas (6/7) were malignant. Most granulosa cell tumors were solid; two were mostly cystic. Patterns included sheets of round and ovoid to spindle-shaped cells separated by thin, fibrovascular stroma; neoplastic cells formed rosettes or Call-Exner bodies. In some areas, neoplastic cells were in cords or columns and formed cyst-like structures. Four granulosa cell tumors were macrofollicular, having cysts lined with granulosa cells. Median ages of dogs with different ovarian neoplasms were similar; all were more than 10 years old, except the dogs with teratoma (mean age, 4 years). Most neoplasms were unilateral (84%), except the Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors, many of which were bilateral (36%). Size of ovarian neoplasms varied (2 cm3 to 15,000 cm3). Twenty-nine percent of neoplasms metastasized; adenocarcinomas (48%) and malignant teratomas (50%) had the highest rates, and distant metastasis was more common in malignant teratoma. Endometrial hyperplasia was in 67% of the dogs; it was most common in dogs with sex cord stromal tumors (95%). Uterine malignancy was not seen in dogs with granulosa cell tumors, although hyperplasia endometrium was in all dogs with this tumor. Cysts in the contralateral ovaries were most common in dogs with sex cord stromal tumors.

Intratubular germ cell tumours of pig testicles

In the course for the histopathological examination of testicles of 30 castrated boars the authors have observed in 4 animals the intratubular growth of atypical germ cells. On the basis of the histological picture this change is equivalent to the human infertile testicles, observed as carcinoma in situ, resp. intratubular germ cell tumour. The described phenomenon occurred in atrophic testicles in 3 of the 4 old animals. The described change in the domestic pig, not known so far, raises the possibility of development of solid testis tumours in this species, as well.

Testicular tumors in carp-funa hybrid: annual cycle and effect on a wild population

This study documents the occurrence of testicular tumors in a wild population of carp-funa hybrids. The most prevalent tumor was a dysgerminoma. There were lower prevalences of seminomas, leiomyomas, Sertoli cell tumors, and spermatocytic seminomas. Sex-ratio, gonadosomic index (Gi) and the prevalence of tumors in the monthly catch was analysed for five consecutive reproduction periods (1980 to 1984). Gonadal tumors were found only in males. This may be important to the population dynamics of the carp-funa hybrid, since a high percentage of the fish that die during spawning have these tumors. A schematic model for the reservoir's population is suggested.

Lateral hermaphroditism and seminoma in a dog

A 3.6-year-old female Collie was found to have a functionally active ovary and an azospermic testis containing several seminomas. The bitch had had 3 irregular estrous cycles. An ovariohysterectomy was performed, and the histopathologic diagnosis was lateral hermaphroditism and seminoma. Canine intersexes generally have been thought not to have estrous cycles. However, as evidenced in this case, estrous activity can occur. From this report, it is suggested that bitches having irregular estrous cycles should be evaluated for intersexuality.

Feline ovarian neoplasms

Primary ovarian neoplasms from 22 cats were described. A single cat had tumors of epithelial origin--bilateral cystadenomas. Seven animals had germ cell tumors--dysgerminomas or teratomas; two cats had bilateral tumors. Fourteen animals had neoplasms of sex cord-stromal origin--granulosa cell tumors and interstitial gland tumors. Four cats with granulosa cell tumors had clinical evidence of hormonal disturbance.

Spermatocytic seminoma in the rat

During the necropsy of a 2-yr-old untreated control rat from a carcinogenicity study, a tan brown nodular mass was observed within the tunica albuginea of one testis. Both testes were processed for light and transmission electron microscopy. Histologically, the testicular mass was composed of round to polyhedral cells with distinct cell boundaries, amphophilic cytoplasm, fine nuclear chromatin, and a delicate fibrovascular supporting stroma. Ultrastructurally, the tumor cells displayed features associated with spermatocytic differentiation. Based on the light microscopic and the ultrastructural features, the tumor was considered a spermatocytic seminoma of the testis, a rare tumor in the rat.

Canine ovarian tumors of germ cell origin

Fourteen ovarian germ cell tumors were diagnosed in the dog--seven dysgerminomas and seven teratomas. Six of the teratomas had immature components and were judged malignant; three had metastasized. One dysgerminoma had metastasized. The dysgerminomas developed in dogs ten years of age and older, and the teratomas developed in dogs nine years old and younger.

Gonadal neoplasms in largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides and Japanese dace (ugui), Tribolodon hakonensis

Massive abdominal enlargement was observed at relatively high incidence in two species of fish kept in two public aquariums for several years. Three seminomas, one dysgerminoma and two fibromas were found in 14 largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, kept in a public aquarium for over 80 months. Four seminomas and one nephroblastoma were found in 24 Japanese dace (ugui), Tribolodon hakonensis, kept for more than 57 months in two different aquariums. The seminomas in M. salmoides showed rapid growth, and the affected fish died within a few months. At necropsy, a single large tumor, measuring 10.5-12.0 cm, was found in the abdominal cavity. The seminomas in T. hakonensis were single or multiple tumors, measuring 2.0-4.5 cm in diameter. Histologically, these seminomas were composed mainly of a typical germ cells similar to those in human seminomas or embryonal carcinomas. A nephroblastoma in one T. hakonensis showed extensive metastases to various organs. The cause of these tumors is unknown, but the prolonged longevity of fish kept under artificial conditions may have enhanced their development.

A canine testicular tumor resembling gonadoblastoma

A tumor of the left testicle resembling a gonadoblastoma was an incidental finding at necropsy in a 15-year-old male Shetland Sheepdog. This neoplasm was characterized by discrete intratubular aggregates of intimately mixed germ cells and smaller cells resembling Sertoli cells. The latter small cells often formed a single cell layer surrounding the margin of eosinophilic, PAS-positive Call-Exner-like bodies. Electron microscopy showed these bodies to be composed of whorled laminae resembling basement membrane.

A fluorinated glucose analog, 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (F-18): nontoxic tracer for rapid tumor detection

Rapid uptake of F-18 FDG was observed in a variety of transplanted and spontaneous tumors in animals. The tumor uptake reached a peak by 30 min and remained relatively constant up to 60 min, with a very slow wash-out of F-18 activity from the tumor thereafter. Tumor-to-normal tissue and tumor-to-blood ratios ranged from 2.10-9.15 and 2.61-17.82, respectively, depending on the type of tumor. A scintiscan of a seminoma in a dog showed very high uptake in the viable part and lack of uptake in the necrotic mass. Toxicological studies in mice using 1000 times human tracer dose (HTD) per wk for 3 wk and in dogs using 50 times HTD per wk for 3 wk did not show any evidence of acute or chronic toxicity.

A cohort study of canine testicular neoplasia

A prospective epidemiologic study of canine testicular neoplasia was undertaken in the Philadelphia area in 1971, with the cooperation of private veterinary practitioners. By the end of 1975, 938 dogs had been monitored for an average of 2 years. The cohort consisted of 609 cryptorchid and 329 age- and breed-matched controls. The incidence of testicular neoplasia in the cryptorchid subcohort was 12.7/1,000 dog-years at risk. Testicular neoplasms did not develop in controls. A large proportion of the dogs were below the average age at onset for this neoplasm. Among dogs over 6 years of age, the incidence was 68.1/1,000 dog-years at risk. The incidence of Sertoli cell tumors and seminoma was approximately twice as high in dogs with unilaterally retained inguinal testicles as in abdominal cryptorchids. Sertoli cell tumors developed in 10 dogs and seminoma developed in 6. One half of the testicular neoplasms that developed did so within the first year of observation. This study demonstrated the feasibility of conducting prospective epidemiologic studies of canine diseases with the assistance of practicing veterinarians.

Ovarian neoplasia in ornamental hybrid carp (Nishikigoi) in Japan

Massive abdominal enlargements were observed in 21 adult carp 4--6 years old living in the breeding ponds of carp fisheries in northern Japan. The abdominal enlargement rapidly increased, and the affected fish died within a few months. At necropsy, single or multiple tumors, 1.5--25 cm (average, 10.6 cm) in diameter, were found in the abdominal cavity. Ovarian tissue was identified close to the tumors in 15 cases, and there was no evidence of anatomic continuity between the tumors and other viscera. It seems likely that all of these tumors arose in the ovaries. Histologically, the 21 tumors observed exhibited great variation, but they were composed mainly of various types of cells similar to those of human dysgerminoma, granulosatheca cell tumors, or embryonal carcinomas. Squamous cell nests were found with mesenchymal elements in one tumor. Thus, ovarian tumors in carp may have diverse histogenetic origins and probably arise both from germ cells and from ovarian mesenchyme. Areas of cellular pleomorphism, which suggested a malignant character, were seen in some of the tumors, but no evidence on metastasis was found. Tumor-bearing carp had generally been raised in ponds supplied by wells or underground springs in mountainous areas. Evidence of a possible environmental factors(s) is yet to be demonstrated.

Leiomyosarcoma of the canine urinary bladder, with metastases

An enlarged nodular mass, assumed to be the prostate gland because of location and consistency, was palpated in the pelvic region of a 10-year-old German Shepherd Dog. Castration was performed as a therapeutic procedure after an estrogenic hormone failed to reduce the size of the mass. A tumor identified histologically as a seminoma was in the right testicle. The dog died 1 month after castration, and generalized metastatic neoplasia was observed at necropsy. The mass that involved the neck of the bladder and the metastases were identified as leiomyosarcoma.
