Abstract
Fasciolosis is a worldwide distribution zoonosis that causes great damage in ruminant breeding and has the aquatic mollusc Pseudosuccinea columella as an intermediate host. Synthetic molluscicides are the most used for control; however, they are harmful to fauna and flora. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of essential oils from Thymus vulgaris, Origanum vulgare, and terpene carvacrol, on adult molluscs and eggs of P. columella. Analysis of EO volatile components was carried out on a gas chromatograph equipment coupled with mass spectrometry selective detector. The studied components were diluted in concentrations of 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 ppm, and it was observed that O. vulgare at concentrations of 60, 80 and 100 ppm, carvacrol at the concentrations of 80 and 100 ppm, and T. vulgaris at a concentration of 80 ppm led to 100% mortality of molluscs. All concentrations the substances tested showed 100% ovicidal activity.

Abstract
A new series of nicotinonitrile derivatives 2-7 was designed and synthesized from the starting material (E)-3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (1) to assess their molluscicidal activity. The newly synthesized nicotinonitrile compounds 2-7 were characterized based on FTIR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-APT NMR spectra as well as elemental microanalyses. The target compounds 2-7 were screened for their toxicity effect against M. cartusiana land snails and were compared to Acetamiprid as a reference compound. The results demonstrated that the nicotinonitrile-2-thiolate salts 4a and 4b had good mortality compared with that of Acetamiprid. The results of the in vivo effect of the prepared nicotinonitrile molecules 2, 4a, and 4b on biochemical parameters, including AChE, ALT, AST, and TSP, indicated a reduction in the level of AChE and TSP as well as an increase in the concentration of transaminases (ALT and AST). A histopathological study of the digestive gland sections of the M. cartusiana land snails was carried out. The nicotinonitrile-2-thiolate salts 4a,b showed vacuolization, causing the digestive gland to lose its function. It could be concluded that the water-soluble nicotinonitrile-2-thiolate salts 4a,b could be adequate molluscicidal molecules against M. cartusiana land snails.

Abstract
Schistosomiasis is one of the most important tropical diseases. A fundamental strategy to control its spread is the use of natural products against its vectors, which are snails of the genus Biomphalaria. The present study evaluated the chemical composition, the molluscicidal and cercaricidal effects, and the ecotoxicity of the essential oil from the aerial parts of Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants (DAEO). The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Molluscicidal and cercaricidal activities were determined by the immersion method. Environmental toxicity was assessed from bioassays using Artemia salina larvae and Danio rerio fish. DAEO presented a 0.8% yield. The GC-MS analysis revealed the predominance of hydrocarbon monoterpenes in the oil. A total of 32 constituents was identified, with α-terpinene (50.69%) being the major compound, followed by p-cymene (13.27%) and ascaridole (10.26%). DAEO was active against adult Biomphalaria glabrata snails and demonstrated lethal effect against Schistosoma mansoni cercariae, with LC50 values of 25.2 (22.7-27.8) and 62.4 (61.8-62.9) μg/mL, respectively. Regarding toxicity to non-target aquatic organisms, the oil showed LC50 values of 86.9 (84.7-87.6) and 18.6 μg/mL (15.5-22.8) for A. salina and D. rerio, respectively. DAEO proved to be a promising natural product for the control of schistosomiasis, acting on both the vectors and the etiological agent of the disease. However, the use of the oil is safer in transmission sites where there are no non-target organisms, as it has showed toxicity to D. rerio fish.

Abstract
Schistosomiasis continues to pose significant public health problems in many developing countries. Mass drug administration (MDA) is the most adopted control option but there is increasing evidence for the development of praziquantel-resistant Schistosoma strains. This shortcoming has necessitated the search for other effective methods for the control of schistosomiasis. The breaking of Schistosoma transmission cycles through the application of molluscicides into snail infested freshwater bodies has yielded positive outcomes when integrated with MDA in some countries. However, few of such effective molluscicides are currently available, and where available, their application is restricted due to toxicity concerns. Some nanotized particles with molluscicidal activities against the different stages of snail intermediate hosts of schistosomes have been reported. Importantly, the curcumin-nisin nanoparticle synthesized by our group was very effective and it showed no significant toxicity in a mouse model and brine shrimps. This, therefore, offers the possibility of developing a molluscicide that is not only safe for man but also is environmentally friendly. This paper reviews nanoparticles with molluscicidal potential. The methods of their formulation, activities, probable mechanisms of actions, and their toxicity profiles are discussed. More research should be made in this field as it offers great potential for the development of new molluscicides.

Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been applied in several commercial products due to their antimicrobial properties, while their molluscicide properties, mode of action and toxicity to snail species remain unclear. In this study, the comparative toxicity of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-functionalized Ag NPs and their dissolved counterpart (Ag ions) was analyzed during the early developmental stages of the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata, intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni. Ag NPs were synthesized and characterized by multiple techniques, and the snail embryotoxicity was analyzed in terms of mortality, hatching, developmental stages and morphological alterations, while the acute toxicity to newly-hatched snails was analyzed by mortality and behavioral impairments. Results showed that both Ag forms induced mortality, hatching delay and morphological alterations (especially hydropic abnormalities) in snail embryos in a concentration and exposure time dependent patterns. Ag NPs showed low embryotoxic effects and similar toxicity for newly-hatched snails when compared to their dissolved counterparts, indicating that the nanotoxicity was dependent of snail developmental stages. The knowledge about the Ag NP toxicity to different early development stages of B. glabrata contributes to its potential use as molluscicide and control of neglected tropical diseases, including schistosomiasis.

Abstract
Several formulated mixtures of pesticides are widely used in modern agriculture. Nevertheless, the agriculture runoff causes a serious damage to the aquatic ecosystem. Therefore, the present study aims to use B. alexandrina snails as bioindicators for 30 g/l lambda-cyhalothrin and 17 g/l acetamiprid as a formulated mixture insecticide. Results showed that it has a molluscicidal activity against snails at LC50 7.9 mg/l. The hatchability percent of both treated 1-day-aged and/or 3-day-aged groups were less than that of the control group. The sublethal concentrations of the tested insecticide caused a remarkable abnormal necrosis in male and female gametogenic cells, besides a severe damage in both secretory and digestive cells. The results of SDS-PAGE protein profiles of treated snails showed that the least number of protein bands was noticed in snail groups that subjected to LC10 (6.6 mg/l) and LC25 (7.2 mg/l) concentrations when compared to control protein fractions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pueraria peduncularis (Grah. ex Benth.) Benth., which belongs to the Leguminosae family, exhibits resistance to many crop pests in agricultural production. Pomacea canaliculata is an important invasive snail in rice fields and causes severe yield losses. To evaluate the toxicity of P. peduncularis to P. canaliculata, in this study the molluscicidal activity of root extracts of P. peduncularis was tested against P. canaliculata; the active compounds were isolated, and the structures of these compounds were analysed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis and mass spectral analysis. RESULTS Our results showed that the molluscicidal activity of the root crude extract differed between P. canaliculata with different shell diameters after treatment for 72 h. The median lethal concentration (LC50 ) was 5.511 mg L-1 against snails of 1.5 ± 0.2 cm diameter and 12.383 mg L-1 against snails of 2.5 ± 0.2 cm diameter. Furthermore, two active ingredients isolated from root methanol extracts were identified as pedunsaponin A and pedunsaponin C. Both pedunsaponin A and pedunsaponin C showed strong molluscicidal activities, with LC50 values of 3.893 and 4.252 mg L-1 , respectively, against snails with shell diameters of 1.5 ± 0.2 cm after treatment for 72 h. CONCLUSION Pueraria peduncularis extracts exhibit high molluscicidal activity and have great potential value for exploring a molluscicide to control Pomacea canaliculata. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The application of metaldehyde to agricultural catchment areas to control slugs and snails has caused severe problems for drinking water supply in recent years. In the River Thames catchment, metaldehyde has been detected at levels well above the EU and UK drinking water standards of 0.1 μg l-1 at many sites across the catchment between 2008 and 2015. Metaldehyde is applied in autumn and winter, leading to its increased concentrations in surface waters. It is shown that a process-based hydro-biogeochemical transport model (INCA-contaminants) can be used to simulate metaldehyde transport in catchments from areas of application to the aquatic environment. Simulations indicate that high concentrations in the river system are a direct consequence of excessive application rates. A simple application control strategy for metaldehyde in the Thames catchment based on model results is presented.

Abstract
This study evaluated the biological activity of an ether extract and barbatic acid (BAR) from Cladia aggregata on embryos and adult mollusks of Biomphalaria glabrata, cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni and the microcrustacean Artemia salina. The ether extract and BAR were obtained by successive extractions with diethyl ether. The obtained extracts were analyzed using thin-layer chromatography (TLC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the ether extract exerted embryotoxic effects at 50 and 100 µg/mL and molluscicidal effects at 20 and 25 µg/mL. BAR exhibited no embryotoxicity, and its molluscicidal concentration was equal to that of the ether extract. However, after 60 min of exposure, 1 µg/mL BAR presented cercaricidal activity against the parasite S. mansoni at the second larval stage. Neither substance induced toxicity against A. salina. These results indicate the potential molluscicidal activities of the ether extract and BAR against B. glabrata and S. mansoni cercariae. In addition to these effects, there was a lack of toxicity against the aquatic environment and no damage to the biota, indicating the potential of these products for large-scale control and/or eradication of schistosomiasis.

Abstract
Senecio punae Cabrera (Asteraceae-Senecioneae) is an endemic species from Puna semi-desert region of Argentina.The major compound, 4p,5p-eremophil- 7(11)9-dien-8-one, also known as dehydrofukinone (D), was isolated from the diethyl ether extract (E) of the plant. The phytochemical constituents from S. punae are presented here for the first time, as well as bioassays employing D, a molecule with versatility to carry out many different biological activities. E and D showed acute molluscicidal activity against the bilharzia vector snail Biomphalaria peregrina with LD50 values of 68.6 and 16.7 pg/mL, respectively. D exerted moderate and strong effects against promastigotes of Leishmania amazonensis and L. braziliensis, with IC5s values of 34.3?1.2 and 9.93+0.17 Ag/mL, respectively. Antibacterial effects were also found. Diethyl ether extract (E) and dehydrofukinone (D) were slightly active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus at 50 and 25 tg/mL, respectively. However, D and E improved the effectiveness of oxacillin at 6 ig/mL against S. aureus growth and its biofilm, but did not affect beneficial lactobacilli strains. Synergistic effects were also measured between D (23 gg/mL) and ciprofloxacin (0.25 pg/mL) against two P. aeruginosa strains (FIC index = 0.38), as well as against two S. aureus strains (FIC indexes = 0.38 and 0.25). Finally, when 250 pg of either dehydrofukinone (D) or diethyl ether extract (E) were incorporated into the diet of the pest Oryzaephillus surinamensis, an alteration in the feeding behavior of the insect (Repellency indexes = +60 and +10, respectively) was observed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the Oncomelania hupensis snail control effects of molluscicides with different formulations in the ditch with unstable water level in field of marshland and lake areas, so as to provide the evidence for formulating the prevention strategies. METHODS A drainage channel with O. hupensis snails in Jiangling County, Jingzhou City were selected as the study field, then it was divided into 6 segments, except 1 segment was treated as the blank control group for observing the natural mortality rate of the snails, the other 5 segments were treated as observation groups, where 4% niclosamide ethanolamine salt powder, 5% niclosamide ethanolamine salt granule, 25% suspension concentrate of niclosamide ethanolamine salt, 26% suspension concentrate of metaldehyde and niclosamide ethanolamine salt, 50% niclosamide ethanolamine salt wettable powder were applied respectively. Before and after the mollusciciding, the snail surveys were carried out through the systematic sampling method, and the short- and long-term effects of snail control were observed, and the mortality rates of the snails on the slope above the water level and those below the water level were compared. RESULTS When 7 d and 15 d after mullusciciding, the mortality rates of snails on the slope above the water level in each observation group were 79.52%-97.87% and 90.43%-96.30%, respectively, when compared with those before mollusciciding, all the differences were statistically significant (all P < 0.01). When 7 d after mullusciciding, the mortality rates of snails below the water level in each observation group were 17.11%-50.00%, which were all lower than those of the snails on the slope above the water level in the corresponding groups (all P < 0.05); when 15 d after mullusciciding, the rates were 9.43%-95.24%, and those in 25% suspension concentrate of niclosamide ethanolamine salt, 26% suspension concentrate of metaldehyde and niclosamide ethanolamine salt, 50% niclosamide ethanolamine salt wettable powder groups were all lower than those of the snails on the slope above the water level in the corresponding groups (all P < 0.01). Compared with the densities of living snails before mollusciciding, those 6 months after mollusciciding in each observation group decreased by 70.21%-78.98%. CONCLUSIONS The molluscicides in the formulation of powders and granule are suitable for both the snail environment with or without water, while those in the formulation of suspension agents and wettable powders are suitable only for environments with water.

Abstract
The degradation kinetics of three pesticides - metaldehyde, clopyralid and mecoprop - by ultraviolet photolysis and hydroxyl radical oxidation by low pressure ultraviolet hydrogen peroxide (LP-UV/H2O2) advanced oxidation was determined. Mecoprop was susceptible to both LP-UV photolysis and hydroxyl radical oxidation, and exhibited the fastest degradation kinetics, achieving 99.6% (2.4-log) degradation with a UV fluence of 800 mJ/cm(2) and 5 mg/L hydrogen peroxide. Metaldehyde was poorly degraded by LP-UV photolysis while 97.7% (1.6-log) degradation was achieved with LP-UV/H2O2 treatment at the maximum tested UV fluence of 1000 mJ/cm(2) and 15 mg/L hydrogen peroxide. Clopyralid was hardly susceptible to LP-UV photolysis and exhibited the lowest degradation by LP-UV/H2O2 among the three pesticides. The second-order reaction rate constants for the reactions between the pesticides and OH-radicals were calculated applying a kinetic model for LP-UV/H2O2 treatment to be 3.6 × 10(8), 2.0 × 10(8) and 1.1 × 10(9) M(-1) s(-1) for metaldehyde, clopyralid and mecoprop, respectively. The main LP-UV photolysis reaction product from mecoprop was 2-(4-hydroxy-2-methylphenoxy) propanoic acid, while photo-oxidation by LP-UV/H2O2 treatment formed several oxidation products. The photo-oxidation of clopyralid involved either hydroxylation or dechlorination of the ring, while metaldehyde underwent hydroxylation and produced acetic acid as a major end product. Based on the findings, degradation pathways for the three pesticides by LP-UV/H2O2 treatment were proposed.

Abstract
The effect of sub-lethal doses (40% and 80% of LC(50)/24h) of plant derived molluscicides of singly, binary (1:1) and tertiary (1:1:1) combinations of the Rutin, Ellagic acid, Betulin and taraxerol with J. gossypifolia latex, leaf and stem bark powder extracts and their active component on the reproduction of freshwater snail Lymnaea acuminata have been studied. It was observed that the J. gossypifolia latex, stem bark, individual leaf and their combinations with other plant derived active molluscicidal components caused a significant reduction in fecundity, hatchability and survival of young snails. It is believed that sub-lethal exposure of these molluscicides on snail reproduction is a complex process involving more than one factor in reducing the reproductive capacity.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of 3 molluscicides namely 5% niclosamide ethanolamine granules, 4% "Luowei" (Tea-seed distilled saponins, TDS) and 50% wettable powder of niclosamide ethanolamine salt (WPN) by spraying and poudrage methods in marshland and lake regions in dry season. METHODS An environment with a high snail density was chosen as the experimental field, then the spraying and poudrage experiments were carried out in the field to assess the molluscicidal effects of 5% niclosamide ethanolamine granules, TDS and WPN delivered by spraying and poudrage methods with a concentration of 30, 6 and 2 g/m2, respectively, and the molluscicidal effects of the 3 drugs by the two methods were evaluated and compared in different time. RESULTS After the delivery for 15 d, the adjusted snail death rates of the 5% niclosamide ethanolamine granules, TDS and WPN in the spraying experiment were 79.00%, 82.29% and 84.83%, respectively, and those in the poudrage experiments were 97.42%, 95.27% and 96.62%, respectively. CONCLUSION The molluscicidal effect of poudrage method is better than the spraying method, and the former is worthy of further extension and application in the marshland in dry season.

Abstract
Buddleja lindleyana is a medicinally important member of the family Loganiaceae distributed in Eastern China. The plant has been used in different traditional medications for the treatment of various diseases. Acacetin-7-rutinoside was isolated from the n-butanol fraction of fresh B. lindleyana leaves and found to be a new molluscicidal agent against the snail Oncomelania hupensis. The structure of acacetin-7-rutinoside was elucidated based on spectral data, including 1H NMR and 13C NMR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the molluscicidal effects between "Luo-wei" (TDS), a plant molluscicide in 4 percent, and metaldehyde and niclosamide (MNSC) in the field. METHODS A natural ecological environment with Oncomelania hupensis was selected as the test area, the test concentrations of TDS and MNSC were 2.5 g/m3 and 2 ml/m3 respectively by the immersion method; the test doses of TDS and MNSC were 3 g/m2 and 2 ml/m2 respectively by the spray method; the doses of WPN in a control group were 2 g/m3 and 2 g/m2 respectively by the two methods above-mentioned. The molluscicidal effects between TDS and MNSC were compared by using the synchronous design method and parallel comparative method. RESULTS In the TDS group, the death rate of snails was 90.70% by immersion for 24 hours, reached to 81.40% after spraying for 7 days, and there were no significant differences among the observation time points in molluscicidal effects (P > 0.05). One day after the spraying, the death rate of snails was less in the TDS group compared with that in the MSCN group (P < 0.01), but the death rates of snails were similar in both groups 3 days after the spraying (P > 0.05). In the MSCN group, the death rate of snails was 99.17% by immersion for 24 hours, reached to 66.07% by spraying for 1 day. In the WPS group, the death rate of snails was 97.15% by immersion for 24 hours, reached to 71.43% after spraying for 1 day, and there were no significant differences (both P > 0.05). CONCLUSION TDS has a good molluscicidal activity and stable efficacy, and the molluscicidal effect of TDS is similar to that of MSCN in the filed, but the molluscicidal sensitivity of TDS is lower than that of MSCN.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the molluscicidal effect of Rongbao in schistosomiasis endemic areas in Mianyang City. METHODS Three Oncomelania hupensis snail habitats with the similar snail status were selected and sprayed with Rongbao, niclosamide, and fresh water, respectively. Then the snail status in the three fields was surveyed before the spraying and 7, 15, 30 and 60 days after the spraying, and the molluscicidal effects of different molluscicides were compared. RESULTS The reducing rates of densities of living snails in the field sprayed with Rongbao were 94.4%, 95.9%, 98.2% and 98.8%, 7, 15, 30 and 60 days after the spraying, respectively. The reducing rates of the densities of living snails in the other field sprayed with niclosamide were 94.0%, 94.0%, 89.9% and 92.2% in above-mentioned days, respectively. In the 30 days and 60 days after the spraying, the reducing rates of densities of living snails in the field sprayed with Rongbao were significantly higher than those sprayed with niclosamide (chi2(30d) 8.18, chi2(60d) = 3.97, Both P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The short-term molluscicidal effect of Rongbao is similar to that of niclosamide, but the long-term effect of Rongbao is better than that of niclosamide.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the contributions of main chemical compositions of extracts of Eucalyptus camaldulensis represented by GC/MS elute peaks to the molluscicidal activities, and explore a shortcut of looking for the effective components from natural products. METHODS E. camaldulensis leaves were collected consecutively in 12 months at the same place, extracted with dichloromethane, analyzed by GC/MS, and their LC50(s) of molluscicidal activities were tested according to the method recommended by WHO. The correlation of the main components in 12 extracts and their molluscicidal activities were analyzed by the grey relative correlation analysis model with software GTMS 3.0. RESULT All the dichloromethane extracts of eucalyptus leaves showed excellent molluscicidal activities with the highest LC50 of 0.257mg/L and 0.242mg/L for the samples in June and July and the lowest LC50 of 6.802 mg/L and 5.406 mg/L in December and January respectively. The structures of 16 main chemical components were elucidated by GC/MS and NIST Mass Spectral Library, most of which were monoterpenes and sesquiterpenoids. The gray correlation coefficients with activity were all over 0.5, the first five over 0.9 were 4,4, 8-Trimethyltricyclo [6.3.1.0 (1,5) ]dodecane-2,9-diol, (-)-Spathulenol, a structural isomer of (-)-Spathulenol, Eucalyptol and Ledol. CONCLUSION The most main ingredients in the dichloromethane extracts of E. camaldulensis leaves show good correlations with the molluscicidal activity, which suggests that the molluscicidal role is synergistically played by the multiple components together.

Abstract
UNLABELLED CONTEXT. Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt ex Bor (Poaceae), known as citronella grass, is an aromatic herbaceous plant and the essential oil extracted from this grass is used in cosmetics, perfumes, hygiene and cleanliness products worldwide. OBJECTIVE This study investigated the composition and molluscicidal and larvicidal activities of the essential oil of C. winterianus cultivated in North Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS The oil was obtained by hydrodistillation, analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry and then its molluscicidal and larvicidal activities against snails (Biomphalaria glabrata) and hatched larvae of Artemia salina, respectively, were evaluated at concentrations from 10 to 1000 mg/L. RESULTS The main constituents of oil were citronellal (26.5%), geraniol (16.2%), elemol (14.5%) and citronellol (7.3%). The molluscicidal test revealed significant lethal concentration (LC) values (LC90=97.0 mg/L, LC50=54.0 mg/L and LC20=22.0 mg/L), indicating the presence of molluscicidal compounds in the oil. In addition, the oil showed moderate larvicidal activity (LC50=181.0 mg/L) against the larvae of A. salina, which could justify its use in the aquatic environment without affecting other living organisms. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION The results suggest that the oil of C. winterianus could be an effective alternative to control schistosomiasis, with an average margin of safety to other living organisms that coexist with snails.

Abstract
CONTEXT Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Delile (Zygophyllaceae) is a tropical tree that has many folk uses in various countries. The bark extract is used for the control of the fresh water snails that act as intermediary host of Schistosoma. OBJECTIVE Study the molluscicidal activity and chemical constituents of seed oil and seed glycosides of B. aegyptiaca against Monacha cartusiana and determine the structure-activity relationship. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two bioassay methods (residual film application and the leaf dipping technique) were used to evaluate the toxicity effect of the seed oil and glycosides, in concentrations of 1.000, 0.500, 0.250 and 0.125%. The seed oil was analysed by GC/MS. Acid hydrolysis and chromatographic separation were used to study the seed saponins. RESULTS The bioassay of B. aegyptiaca against the land snail, M. cartusiana, indicated the activity of the seed oil and the high activity of the seed saponins. The seed glycosides gave 30.0, 53.3, 73.0 and 73.3% mortality for concentrations of 0.125, 0.250, 0.500 and 1.00%, respectively. The LC(50) values were 0.335 and 0.256%, respectively. The seed oil was analysed by GC/MS. Acid hydrolysis of the seed saponins gave a mixture of diosgenin, yamogenin and 3,5-spirostadiene. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION To study the structure-activity relationship, a triterpenoidal saponin and a triterpenoidal saponins rich extract (of Zygophyllum coccenum) were proven to be inactive. Thus, the activity is associated with the steroidal, not triterpenoidal saponins. Moreover, a spirostane aglycone without sugar moiety, was found to be inactive and attained the activity by glycosidation.

Abstract
Bioactivity-guided separation of the aqueous methanolic extract of Yucca desmettiana leaves, which in a preliminary screening exhibited significant molluscicidal activity, led to the isolation and structure elucidation of two new steroidal saponins (1 and 2). The structures of desmettianosides A and B, identified as bisdesmosidic furostanol glycosides with six and five sugar units, respectively, were established by detailed spectroscopic analyses of their NMR and MS data. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited high molluscicidal activity against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails with LC100 values of 6 and 11 mg/L, respectively.

Abstract
In spite of intense research on both chemical constituency and biological activity of Hypericum species, potential applications of their active components for pest control have been less well investigated. In the present study, Hypericum androsaemum (tutsan), Hypericum foliosum (malfurada), and Hypericum undulatum (wavy St. John's wort) aqueous and hexane extracts were studied for their molluscicidal and ovicidal activities against Radix peregra. The molluscicidal activity of the aqueous extracts was low, except for H. androsaemum infusion (median lethal concentration [LC50](adults) = 317.1 ppm; LC50(juveniles) = 415 ppm), and less important compared with the toxicity of all three hexane extracts tested: H. androsaemum (LC50(adults) = 30.47 ppm; LC50(juveniles) = 73.25 ppm), H. undulatum (LC50(adults) = 30.55 ppm; LC50(juveniles) = 60.54 ppm), and H. foliosum (LC50(adults) = 48.61 ppm; LC50(juveniles) = 38.81 ppm). An ovicidal effect was observed only with H. androsaemum infusion (1.85% of hatching at 500 ppm) and H. foliosum hexane extract (0.0% of hatching at 100 ppm). A preliminary phytochemical investigation of the lipophylic extracts from these Hypericum sp. revealed a different chemical profile and confirmed the presence of ursolic acid only in H. undulatum as the main compound. The present study indicates that products from hexane extracts of the Hypericum sp. analyzed may be used as potential molluscicides to control snails responsible for transmitting fasciolosis.

The essential oil of an Argentine collection of the annual herb Acanthospermum hispidum DC. (Asteraceae), which contains the sesquiterpenoids beta-caryophyllene (35.2%), alpha-bisabolol (11.4%), and germacrene D (11.1%) as major constituents, displayed molluscicidal effects on an adult population of Biomphalaria peregrina Orbigny (LD50 37.8 microg/mL) and produced alteration of the feeding and oviposition behavior of the polyphagous insect Spodoptera frugiperda Smith when incorporated in the larval diet at 250 microg/g. In addition, a selective antibacterial activity was observed against pathogenic strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis (MICs 62.5 and 125 microg/mL), but was inactive at 125 microg/mL against three beneficial lactic acid bacteria. Synergistic interactions were further validated by FIC index determination of the combination of the antibiotics oxacillin and gentamicin and the essential oil on the four pathogenic strains evaluated.

Abstract
The dissipation of metaldehyde on cabbage and in soil was studied and half-life (DT(50)) was estimated in a field study carried out at three different locations. Metaldehyde was sprayed on cabbage at 937.5 and 1406.25 ga.i.ha(-1) for residue study and 1,875 ga.i.ha(-1) for dissipation study in cabbage and soil. Samples of cabbage and soil for dissipation experiment were collected at 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 14 and 21 days after treatment. For residue studies, cabbage and soil samples were sampled at 5, 7 and 10 days after treatment. Quantification of residues was done by LC-MS/MS. The DT(50) of metaldehyde in cabbage and soil were 0.48-1.61 days and 0.75-1.02 days, respectively, when applied at 2 times of the recommended high dosage. Residues of metaldehyde in cabbage were all below the maximum residue levels of 1.0 mg kg(-1) at both recommended high dosage and 1.5 times the recommended high dosage.

Abstract
Molluscicides can play an important role in the control of schistosomiasis because snails of the genus Biomphalaria act as intermediate hosts for the parasite. Schistosomiasis is one of 13 neglected tropical diseases with high morbidity and mortality that collectively affect one billion of the world's poorest population, mainly in developing countries. Thiopalmyrone (1) and palmyrrolinone (2), metabolites isolated from extracts of a Palmyra Atoll environmental assemblage of two cyanobacteria, cf. Oscillatoria and Hormoscilla spp., represent new and potent molluscicidal chemotypes against Biomphalaria glabrata (LC50=8.3 and 6.0 μM, respectively). A slight enhancement in molluscicidal effect (LC50=5.0 μM) was observed when these two natural products were utilized as an equimolar binary mixture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the preservation condition of niclosamide in water samples and establish a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method by solid-phase extraction (SPE) which is used for determination and preservation of niclosamide in water samples. METHODS Under the simulated setting in laboratory, niclosamide was formulated into the solutions of 0.50, 1.00 mg/L and 2.00 mg/L with fishpond water. The solutions were preserved at 25, 4, -40 degrees C and -40 degrees C (repeated freezing and thawing), respectively, or 0.2% acetic acid and twice volume of acetonitrile were added into the water samples, and then the solutions were passed through the activated column, and stored at room temperature, 16 days later, the column was washed, dried and re-dissolved, and niclosamide was determined by using the HPLC method. RESULTS The concentration of niclosamide in water samples decreased at 25 degrees C or 4 degrees C, and did not change at -40 degrees C, but decreased after repeated freezing and thawing. No decrease of niclosamide was found in water samples for 16 days by using SPE. The recovery rate of HPLC was 98.12%-100.06% and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was less than 5%. CONCLUSIONS The preservation of niclosamide in water samples is frozen and protected from light without repeated freezing and thawing. The SPE method does not need to be protected from light and freezing, which can simply and effectively purify, concentrate and store niclosamide in water samples.

Abstract
Five new prenylated phloroglucinols were isolated from the diethyl ether extracts of the ferns Elaphoglossum gayanum and E. piloselloides. Their structures were established by analysis of their spectroscopic data (1D and 2D NMR, HRMS, and IR) and chemical derivatization. The two major compounds exhibited moderate molluscicidal activity against the snail Biomphalaria peregrina, a vector of the tropical disease schistosomiasis, with LD(50) 7.2 microg/mL (14.4 microM) and 11.7 microg/mL (22.2 microM).

Abstract
Schistosomisis is endemic in many rural areas of developing countries. The life cycle of schistosomes is complex with two hosts, an intermediate snail host and a definitive human host. Biomphalaria arabica is the intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni in Saudi Arabia. One method of controlling the disease is to break the life cycle at the intermediate host snail stage using molluscicides. Snails kill schistosomes by a mechanism involving production of reactive oxygen species. In this study malondialdehyde (MDA), and the antioxidants glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GP(x)) were determined in tissue homogenates of B. arabica treated with sublethal concentration (LC25) of the plant molluscicide Solanum nigrum. MDA, GSH and CAT were significantly increased in molluscicide-treated snails compared to controls (p < 0.000). GP(x) was decreased in treated snails. It therefore appears that a sublethal concentration of S. nigrum increases both ability of snail tissue to generate cytotoxic ROS and antioxidants for protection of the tissue against the cytotoxicity. The increase in the level of ROS would decrease snail- schistosome compatibility.

Abstract
Schistosomiasis is one of the most important human parasitic diseases. One of the possible methods for the control is through the molluscan intermediate host of the parasite. Biomphalaria arabica, molluscan hosts to Schistosoma mansoni in Saudi Arabia were treated with sublethal concentrations (LC25) of dry powdered leaves Solanum nigrum. Effect of plant on ectonucleotidases (NTPdases) (ADPase & ATPase), sodium/potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na+/K+ ATPase) and creatine kinase (CK) was traced. The plant molluscicide was potent in inhibiting the four investigated enzymes giving a percentage inhibition range between 45-55%. The effect of the inhibited enzymes on the compatibility of the snail hosts to schistosome parasite was discussed. In conclusion, the use of sublethal concentration of S. nigrum to disturb the biochemical profile of the snail hosts could be a promising and safe strategy to control the disease.

Abstract
Over the last 50 years, molluscicides have played a critical role in the control of schistosomiasis transmission. Cyanolide A (2), isolated from extracts of a Papua New Guinea collection of Lyngbya bouillonii, is a new and highly potent molluscicidal agent against the snail vector Biomphalaria glabrata (LC(50) = 1.2 microM). The structure of cyanolide A (2) was elucidated through extensive NMR spectroscopic analyses, yielding a symmetrical dimer that represents the newest addition to the family of glycosidic macrolides from cyanobacteria.

Abstract
Pomacea canaliculata snails pose a severe problem to direct seeded rice cultivated in Southern Brazil. Control of this snail is nowadays performed with toxic chemicals such as copper sulfate and fungicides such as fentin. A novel natural molluscicide based on alkali modified quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) saponins was tested under laboratory conditions. Snails were collected in rice fields close to Porto Alegre (State of Rio Grande do Sul) and in Brusque (State of Santa Catarina, 400 km north of Porto Alegre). In Santa Catarina the product was very effective, while in Porto Alegre it had no effect. This unexpected behavior was probably due to the respiratory habits of the snails under different contents of dissolved oxygen in the water. Near Porto Alegre the water used in rice fields is heavily polluted, with dissolved oxygen levels of 1-2 ppm, and the snails rely primarily on their siphon and lungs to breathe. Since saponin control is probably due to an interaction between saponins with the sterols present in the cell walls in the gills, no control was observed. By contrast, in Santa Catarina the dissolved oxygen level of the water is 5-6 ppm, and the snails remain mostly underwater, breathing with their gills. In this case the snails died within 24 h at a dose of 20 and 30 ppm of product. To test this observation, snails grown in polluted waters were forced to remain underwater in saponin solutions and water (control) preventing the use of their siphon to breathe. The snails exposed to saponin solutions died, while the control snails survived, indicating that they were still able to use their gills to breathe. These results indicate that the use of the saponin product is limited to rice fields not irrigated with heavily polluted waters.

Abstract
Substituted phenylglyoxylonitrile oximino phosphates and thiophosphates invested as a synergist of molluscicide killing snail eggs have been exposed to the environment with very little attention. The partitioning properties, aqueous solubility (S(w)), n-octanol-water partition coefficient (K(ow)) and soil organic carbon sorption coefficients (K(oc)) of 16 O, O'-dialkyl, O''-(substituted phenylglyoxylonitrile oximino) phosphates and thiophosphates, were determined by the traditional shaking flask method. The parameters of molecular fragment connectivity indices (MFCIs) and linear solvation energy relationships (LSERs) were used as molecular descriptors to establish a series of correlation equations successfully. The obtained correlation equations provided a quantitative method to predict the three partitioning properties for new exploited substituted phosphates and thiophosphates. More valuable, the successful application of MFCIs provides us with a good example and a good idea to improve traditional molecular connectivity indices (MCIs).

Abstract
This study evaluated the molluscicidal effect of Commiphora mnolmol oil extract (Myrrh), on control of six fresh water snails (Lymnaea natalensis, Bulinus truncatus, Biomphalaria alexandrina, Physa acuta, Melania tuberculata and Cleopatra bulimoides). Also, the extract effect on the egg masses of L. natalensis, B. truncatus, B. alexandrina and Ph. acuta was evaluated. Snails and egg masses were exposed at 16-20 degrees C to various concentrations (conc.). LD50 after 24 hours expo-sure were 264/132, 283/195, 230/252, 200/224, 241/246 & 241/246 ppm for young/adult of L. natalensis, B. truncatus, B. alexandrina, Ph. acuta, M. tuberculata and C. bulimnoides respectively. LDtoo after 24 hours exposure were 400/400 for L. natalensis, B. truncatus, B. alexandrina, M. tuberculata and C. bulimoides, and 300/300 for Ph. acuta. Also, complete mortality (100%) was achieved for the egg masses of L. natalensis, B. truncatus, B. alexandrina and Ph. acuta at concentrations of 300, 200, 300 & 400 ppm respectively. Lower concentrations gave the same results after longer exposure. LD100 of C. molmol oil extract (Myrrh) had a rapid lethal effect on the six snail species and their egg masses in high conc. of 300 & 400 ppm. Commiphora molmol is a promising plant to be included with the candidate plant molluscicides. The oil extract of this plant showed a remarkable molluscicidal activity against used snail species.

Abstract
Two new bicyclic phloroglucinols were isolated from the diethyl ether extract of an Argentine collection of the fern Elaphoglossum piloselloides. Structures were established by analysis of their spectroscopic data ((1)H NMR, HRMS, IR) and chemical derivatization. Both compounds show an acute molluscicidal activity against the schistosomiasis vector snail Biomphalaria peregrina.

Abstract
Golden apple snails ( Pomacea canaliculata) are serious pests of rice in South East Asia. Cyclotides are backbone cyclized peptides produced by plants from Rubiaceae and Violaceae. In this study, we investigated the molluscicidal activity of cyclotides against golden apple snails. Crude cyclotide extracts from both Oldenlandia affinis and Viola odorata plants showed molluscicidal activity comparable to the synthetic molluscicide metaldehyde. Individual cyclotides from each extract demonstrated a range of molluscicidal activities. The cyclotides cycloviolacin O1, kalata B1, and kalata B2 were more toxic to golden apple snails than metaldehyde, while kalata B7 and kalata B8 did not cause significant mortality. The toxicity of the cyclotide kalata B2 on a nontarget species, the Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus), was three times lower than the common piscicide rotenone. Our findings suggest that the existing diversity of cyclotides in plants could be used to develop natural molluscicides.

Abstract
Snail control by molluscicides is an important strategy for schistosomiasis control in China. Currently, only one chemical molluscicide, niclosamide, which is used as 50% wettable powder of niclosamide ethanolamine salt (WPN), is commercially available for field snail control in China. However, WPN is costly, toxic, and has a lower dispersibility and precipitates rapidly. In this paper, we describe the development of a novel formulation of niclosamide, a suspension concentrate of niclosamide (SCN). The efficacy of SCN was evaluated both in the laboratory and field. SCN showed better molluscicidal effects than conventional formulation of WPN, as determined by LC(50) for adult snails, young snails, and snail eggs. The acute toxicity of SCN to Brachdanio rerio hamiton was less than WPN. In conclusion, the novel formulation of SCN suspension is physically more stable, more effective, and less toxic. Therefore, it can be more useful for controlling snails in endemic areas of schistosomiasis in China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To research molluscicidal effect activity, active components and stable passage of endophyte JJ18 from Pseudolarix amabilis and examine the possibility for practical application. METHOD Molluscicidal effect test was performed according to the immersion test method suggested by WHO. RESULT Immersion test with JJ18 broth showed that the active components were extracellular moiety of the broth and that 10% concentration solution could kill nearly 90% snail immersed after 72 h, the salified broth has favourable thermostabily and photostability and showed that JJ18 has stable passage and its active components concentrate in the extract of n-butanol. CONCLUSION The metabolite of endophyte JJ18 has activity for molluscicidal effect and potential for application.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the molluscicidal activities of the ginkgolic acid(GA) monomers isolated and purified from GAs. METHODS Five monomers of GAs from the sarcotesta of Ginkgo biloba. were extracted by petrol ether, separated by silica gel column chromatography, purified by semi-prepared reversed-phased HPLC, and identified by LC-MS analysis. The molluscicidal activities of GAs and their monomers against Oncomelania hupensis were determined as referring to the WHO guidelines for laboratory molluscicidal test. RESULTS The five purified ginkgolic acid monomers were GA(13:0), GA(15:0), GA(15:1), GA(17:1) and GA(17:2), with a side chain of 13, 15, 17 alkyl or ethylenic radicals res pectively on their benzene loop. The five monomer proportions to the total GAs were 17.6%, 3.2%, 52.3%, 23.3% and 3.6% respectively. The order of molluscicidal activities for the five monomers was as follows: GA(13:0)>GA(15:1)>GA(15:0)>GA(17:1)>GA(17:2), and their LC50 for snails was 20.79 mg/L, 22.28 mg/L, 33.76 mg/L, 51.89 mg/L, and 59.10 mg/L respectively after immersion for 24 hours. Two monomers, GA(13:0), and GA(15:1) inhibited the snails' climbing up significantly. CONCLUSION The molluscicidal activities of GAs may be dependent on the monomer's structure with different number of carbon molecules and double-bonds on the side carbon-chain. The two monomers, GA(13:0) and GA(15:1), are mainly responsible for the molluscicidal activities of GAs and both effectively inhibit snails' climbing up as well. GA(15:0) also shows certain molluscicidal activity.

Abstract
The molluscicidal activity of dried root latex powder of Ferula asafoetida, flower-bud powder of Syzygium aromaticum and seed powder of Carum carvi against the snail Lymnaea acuminata was studied. The molluscicidal activity of all the three plant products was found to be both time and concentration dependent. The toxicity of S. aromaticum flower-bud powder (96 h LC(50):51.98 mg/l) was more pronounced than that of root latex powder of F. asafoetida (96 h LC(50):82.71 mg/l) and seed powder of C. carvi (96 h LC(50):140.58 mg/l). Ethanol extract was more toxic than other organic extracts. The ethanol extract of S. aromaticum (24h LC(50):83.53 mg/l) was more effective than that of F. asafoetida (24h LC(50):132.31 mg/l) and C. carvi (24h LC(50):130.61 mg/l) in killing the test animals. The 96 h LC(50) of column purified fraction of seed powder of C. carvi was 5.40 mg/l whereas those of flower-bud powder of S. aromaticum and dried root latex powder of F. asafoetida were 7.87 and 9.67 mg/l, respectively. The product of F. asafoetida, S. aromaticum and C. carvi may be used as potent molluscicides.

Abstract
A variety of bis[3-aryl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-1-carboxaldehydes] 4a-h were obtained via reaction of bis[1-aryl-2-propen-1-ones] 3a-h with hydrazine hydrate in refluxing formic acid. In addition, the corresponding bis[1-acetyl-3-aryl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazoles] 4i-m were formed through conducting the reaction of 3 with hydrazine hydrate in refluxing acetic acid. The starting bis(2-propen-1-ones) 3a-h were prepared stereoselectively as E,E'-geometric isomer via condensation of bisbenzaldehydes 1a,b with (un)substituted acetophenones 2 in ethanolic KOH solution. Anti-inflammatory as well as ulcerogenic activities of the prepared pyrazolines were evaluated in vivo and compared with that of a standard drug (indomethacin). Many of the tested compounds show remarkable anti-inflammatory properties with an ulcerogenic liability (especially 4f, g, j, and k) lower than that of the standard used drug. Compound 4f was established to be the best effectively prepared anti-inflammatory active pyrazoline derivative and safer than indomethacin with respect to its ulcerogenic liability. Molluscicidal activity of the prepared compounds against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails (the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni) was screened. Where, some of the prepared compounds show considerable activities.

Abstract
The molluscicidal activities of ten Baylis-Hillman adducts against Biomphalaria glabrata (Say) snails, the intermediate host of schistosomiasis, have been determined. Nine of these compounds showed significant molluscicidal activity against B. glabrata, falling below the threshold of 100 microg ml(-1) set for potential molluscicidal activity by the World Health Organisation. Among these compounds, 3-hydroxy-2-methylene-3-(4-nitrophenyl)propanenitrile had the highest activity, with LC(50) = 6.64 microg ml(-1).

Abstract
The endod (Phytolacca dodecandra)-based schistosomiasis mansoni control project was implemented in Ethiopia between 1994 and 1999. The aim was to develop an effective, cheap and sustainable method of controlling schistosomiasis. First, different formulations of the Ethiopian endod strain 44 (E-44) were compared for potency in the laboratory. Secondly, spray and drip-feeding methods were compared for simplicity and effectiveness in the field. Lastly, the efficacy of endod powder soap was compared with the endod spray method. In Bati stream, endod powder soap was distributed to the residents every weekend at laundry sites. In Worke stream, endod was sprayed along a 1-km stretch of the stream at 3-month intervals. No endod was applied in Harbu stream. The immediate and long-term effects of endod application on the snail population and schistosomal infection were determined. Using the spray method, 100% snail mortality could be obtained, and it was simpler and more effective than the drip-feeding method. Snail mortality ranged from 20 to 100% using endod soap. There was a progressive decline in the snail population and infection in Bati stream compared with Worke stream, mainly due to sustained use of endod soap. The advantages and disadvantages of the different endod delivery systems are discussed.

Abstract
New nitrogen derivatives from norlapachol, including four new diastereomeric 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-aza-anthraquinones obtained from the Prins cyclization on suitable aminoacetaldehyde dimethylacetal derivatives with formic acid, were found to exhibit molluscicidal activity against Biomphalaria glabrata. These derivatives showed low to medium LC(50) values, similar to those reported previously for the homologous series of nitrogen derivatives of lapachol. The toxicity profile against Artemia salina was also determined for all compounds.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To extract and purify the active component from Solanum for Oncomelania snail control, evaluate its effect against the snails and determine its chemical structure. METHODS Pedicel and seed were moved and the remaining part of the Solanum xanthocarpum fruit was torrefied and ground into powder. The powder was soaked into 95% ethanol and extracted. The residue was treated by ethyl acetate. 7 components were separated by methods of thin layer chromatography (TLC) and column chromatography (CCL). 4 main components were observed for the effect of snail-killing by immersion method. An alkaloid with Rf = 0. 58, named as component A, was confirmed as one of the effective components for Oncomelania snail control. The component A was further purified and received Al and A2 by proper elusion, and their effect was re-tested. The molecular weight and chemical structure of A2 were determined by MS, NMR and IR respectively. RESULTS The death rate of Oncomelania snails was 94.2% when the concentration of component A was 2.50 mg/L1(28 C ). The flow liquid system (ethyl acetate: chloroform: methanol 11:11:35) applied was the best reagent for separating component A. The death rate of Oncomelania snails in solution of A2 (0.2 mg/L) was 100% (28 degrees C). The molecular weight of A2 was 867 with an mp 298-305 C. CONCLUSION The effective agent (A2),one of the active components from the fruit of Solanum xanthocar pum, is alpha-solamargine which shows an excellent effect in killing Oncomelania snails.

Abstract
A previously unknown s-triazine species present in commercially available Irgarol-1051, a booster biocide additive in copper-based antifouling paints for the replacement of organotin-based antifoulants, has been identified in the coastal aquatic environment. After careful isolation, purification and characterization by high resolution MS-MS and (1)H NMR, the molecular structure of that unknown species is found to be N,N'-di-tert-butyl-6-methylthiol-s-triazine-2,4-diamine (designated as M3). Levels of Irgarol-1051, its major degradation product (M1) and the newly identified M3 in the coastal waters of Hong Kong, one of the world's busiest ports located in the southern coast of China, were monitored by SPME-GC-MS and SPME-GC-FID. Water samples from five locations within Hong Kong waters were analysed and the levels of Irgarol-1051, M1 and M3 were found to be 0.1-1.6 microg l(-1), 36.8-259.0 microg l(-1) and 0.03-0.39 microg l(-1), respectively. Our results indicate that M3 is relatively stable against photo- and bio-degradation and may pose considerable risk to primary producer communities in the coastal marine environment.

Abstract
Schistosomiasis is one of the most important public health problems in many developing countries. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of the polymeric niclosamide formulations against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni in Egypt. Three new polymeric formulations were prepared for the molluscicide niclosamide. The formulations were prepared either by the chemical modifications of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) or by physical entrapment of the niclosamide in calcium alginate beads. The release of the niclosamide from the polymeric formulations was investigated. The activity of the prepared formulations against Biomphalaria alexandrina was investigated. The results obtained revealed higher potency for polymerized niclosamide B3 than B1; the lowest potency was revealed for B2. After an exposure period of 24 hours, LC(50) values were 0.073, 0.098 and 1.09 ppm for B3, B1 and B2, respectively. In addition, the molluscicidal potency of the test polymeric niclosamide was age-dependent, where old snails were more tolerant to the test solutions than young and newly hatched snails. The results also indicated that the molluscicidal activity of B3 was extended for 21 days and 17 days for B1, compared with 5 days for free niclosamide. However, the molluscicidal potency of the polymerized niclosamide was increased after boiling for one hour, and was increased with increasing the pH of the medium to pH 9. Abstract
Furfurylidenemalononitriles and thienylidenemalononitriles were treated with 1,3-cyclohexanediones to afford 2-amino-4-hetaryl-5-oxo-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromene-3-carbonitrile derivatives. The molluscicidal activity of these compounds was investigated.

Abstract
The presence of saponins and the molluscicidal activity of the roots, leaves, seeds and fruits of Swartzia langsdorffii Raddi (Leguminosae) against Biomphalaria glabrata adults and eggs were investigated. The roots, seeds and fruits were macerated in 95% ethanol. These extracts exerted a significant molluscicidal activity against B. glabrata, up to a dilution of 100 mg/l. Four mixtures (A2, B2, C and D) of triterpenoid oleanane type saponins were chromatographically isolated from the seed and fruit extracts. Two known saponins (1 and 2) were identified as beta-D-glucopyranosyl-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1->3)- beta-D-glucuronopyranosyl-(1->3)]-3beta-hydroxyolean-12-ene-28 -oate, and beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1->3)-beta-D-glucuronopyranosyl-(1 ->3)]-3beta-hydroxyolean-12-ene-28-oate, respectively. These two saponins were present in all the mixtures, together with other triterpenoid oleane type saponins, which were shown to be less polar, by reversed-phase HPLC. The saponin identifications were based on spectral evidence, including H- H two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, nuclear Overhauser and exchange spectroscopy, heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence, and heteronuclear multiple-bond connectivity experiments. The toxicity of S. langsdorffii saponins to non-target organisms was prescreened by the brine shrimp lethality test.

Abstract
In response to increasing scientific evidence on the toxicity and persistence of organotin residues from antifouling paints in the aquatic environment, the use of triorganotin antifouling products was banned on boats of less than 25 m length in many countries during 1987. Alternatives to tributyltin (TBT) paint are mainly copper based coatings containing organic booster biocides to improve the efficacy of the formulation, and have been utilised on small boats for the last 10 years. With policies encouraging a total ban on TBT, it is expected that these biocides will be used to a greater extent in the future. Limited data and information are available on the environmental occurrence, fate, toxicity, and persistence of these biocides, and thus any decisions on policies regulating antifoulants cannot be fully informed. In this study, a multicriteria comparison of alternative biocides, based on a general assessment of available information in the literature, provided support for the use of the precautionary principle with respect to policies on antifouling products. This assessment was validated by a more detailed comparison of four selected biocides and TBT. Results indicate that TCMS pyridine and TCMTB demonstrate environmental characteristics similar to TBT and thus detail risk assessments are needed before their use is permitted. The widespread use of the other biocides should be allowed only after research to fill the gaps in knowledge with respect to their toxicity and persistence in aquatic environments.

Abstract
Eleven known compounds and a new prenylated naphthoquinone, lippsidoquinone (13), were isolated from ethanol extracts of Lippia sidoides. Their structures were established by a combination of 1D and 2D NMR, IR, and EIMS spectral data analysis. The cytotoxic properties of compounds 3--13 were evaluated against HL60, SW1573, and CEM cell lines. Only tectol (6) and lippsidoquinone (13) exhibited significant activity against human leukemia cell lines HL60 and CEM.
