Abstract
A 52-year-old man who had been taking omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), for 25 years developed iron deficiency anemia. An evaluation of the entire gastrointestinal tract did not reveal any possible causes of gastrointestinal blood loss. The cause of the iron deficiency was considered to be a reduction in gastrointestinal iron absorption in association with the reduced secretion of gastric acid due to PPI use. This case demonstrates that long-term PPI use for as long as 25 years may cause iron deficiency anemia and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia in long-term PPI users.

Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) during pregnancy not only results in the disturbance of hematological parameters but has been found to be an additional cause of oxidative stress (OS). Moreover, oral iron for IDA during pregnancy has been found to worsen the condition. Present study aims to detect any alteration in glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity as an enzymatic anti-oxidant and its association with oral iron supplements. For study, 40 anemic pregnant women were prescribed with 200mg ferrous sulphate for 12 weeks (wks). A significant improvement in hemoglobin (Hb) and serum ferritin concentration (SFC) was seen after treatment (p<0.05). In contrast to the values for hematological parameters, GSH-PX was found to be same for control and anemic groups before iron supplements (p>0.05). A significant decrease in GSH-PX levels of anemic women was seen after iron therapy when compared with both the initial values and the control group (p<0.05). We found a positive association between oral iron administration and OS. Our results showed a strong association between oral iron supplements and SFC which supports the iron overload theory. It is therefore concluded that OS is associated with oral iron supplements during pregnancy.

Abstract
Objective Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has become important with regard to mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the treatment of these patients. Methods IDA in end-stage renal disease patients on HD was observed in 42 (33.6%) of 125 patients. We examined the influence of daily orally iron [sodium ferrous citrate (SFC) iron/tablet 50 mg, 1-2 tablets] on the renal function markers, anemia and iron data for about 6 months. Results The hematocrit and hemoglobin levels were significantly increased in the patients treated with SFC [hematocrit: before 28.5%±2.1% (mean ± standard deviation), 1st month 30.0%±2.3%, p<0.05; 3rd month 32.4%±2.9%, p<0.05; 6th month 31.3%±3.4%, p<0.05; and hemoglobin: before 9.25±0.70, 1st month 9.72±0.71, p<0.05; 3rd month 10.54±0.96, p<0.05; 6th month 10.25±1.21 g/dL, p<0.05]. The transferrin saturation (TSAT) and serum ferritin levels were significantly increased in the patients treated with SFC (TSAT: before 21.5%±10.0%, 1st-3rd month, 34.1%±15.1%, p<0.05; 6-8th month 34.7%±11.9%, p<0.05; and ferritin: before 38.2±37.1, 6-8th month 67.5±44.0 ng/mL, p<0.05). The present findings clearly indicate that oral iron is an effective route of iron supplementation in HD patients, and no adverse effects associated with SFC occurred during the treatment and follow-up period. Conclusion Our results clearly indicate that oral iron delivered via SFC is a well-tolerated and effective form of iron supplementation in long-term HD and IDA patients in Japan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to show the non-inferiority of home fortification with a daily dose of 3 mg iron in the form of iron as ferric sodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (NaFeEDTA) compared with 12.5 mg iron as encapsulated ferrous fumarate in Kenyan children aged 12-36 months. In addition, we updated a recent meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of home fortification with iron-containing powders, with a view to examining diversity in trial results. METHODS We gave chemoprevention by dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine, albendazole and praziquantel to 338 afebrile children with haemoglobin concentration ≥70 g/L. We randomly allocated them to daily home fortification for 30 days with either placebo, 3 mg iron as NaFeEDTA or 12.5 mg iron as encapsulated ferrous fumarate. We assessed haemoglobin concentration (primary outcome), plasma iron markers, plasma inflammation markers and Plasmodium infection in samples collected at baseline and after 30 days of intervention. We conducted a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials in pre-school children to assess the effect of home fortification with iron-containing powders on anaemia and haemoglobin concentration at end of intervention. RESULTS A total of 315 children completed the 30-day intervention period. At baseline, 66.9% of children had inflammation (plasma C-reactive protein concentration >5 mg/L or plasma α 1-acid glycoprotein concentration >1.0 g/L); in those without inflammation, 42.5% were iron deficient. There was no evidence, either in per protocol analysis or intention-to-treat analysis, that home fortification with either of the iron interventions improved haemoglobin concentration, plasma ferritin concentration, plasma transferrin receptor concentration or erythrocyte zinc protoporphyrin-haem ratio. We also found no evidence of effect modification by iron status, anaemia status and inflammation status at baseline. In the meta-analysis, the effect on haemoglobin concentration was highly heterogeneous between trials (I 2: 84.1%; p value for test of heterogeneity: <0.0001). CONCLUSIONS In this population, home fortification with either 3 mg iron as NaFeEDTA or 12.5 mg iron as encapsulated ferrous fumarate was insufficiently efficacious to assess non-inferiority of 3 mg iron as NaFeEDTA compared to 12.5 mg iron as encapsulated ferrous fumarate. Our finding of heterogeneity between trial results should stimulate subgroup analysis or meta-regression to identify population-specific factors that determine efficacy. Abstract
BACKGROUND Understanding the effect of blood donation and iron supplementation on iron balance will inform strategies to manage donor iron status. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 215 donors were randomized to receive ferrous gluconate daily (37.5 mg iron) or no iron for 24 weeks after blood donation. Iron stores were assessed using ferritin and soluble transferrin receptor. Hemoglobin (Hb) iron was calculated from total body Hb. Total body iron (TBI) was estimated by summing iron stores and Hb iron. RESULTS At 24 weeks, TBI in donors taking iron increased by 281.0 mg (95% confidence interval [CI], 223.4-338.6 mg) compared to before donation, while TBI in donors not on iron decreased by 74.1 mg (95% CI, -112.3 to -35.9; p < 0.0001, iron vs. no iron). TBI increased rapidly after blood donation with iron supplementation, especially in iron-depleted donors. Supplementation increased TBI compared to controls during the first 8 weeks after donation: 367.8 mg (95% CI, 293.5-442.1) versus -24.1 mg (95% CI, -82.5 to 34.3) for donors with a baseline ferritin level of not more than 26 ng/mL and 167.8 mg (95% CI, 116.5-219.2) versus -68.1 mg (95% CI, -136.7 to 0.5) for donors with a baseline ferritin level of more than 26 ng/mL. A total of 88% of the benefit of iron supplementation occurred during the first 8 weeks after blood donation. CONCLUSION Donors on iron supplementation replaced donated iron while donors not on iron did not. Eight weeks of iron supplementation provided nearly all of the measured improvement in TBI. Daily iron supplementation after blood donation allows blood donors to recover the iron loss from blood donation and prevents sustained iron deficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of obesity has dramatically increased globally. Weight loss procedures are known to be an effective and reliable method with relatively low complication rate and satisfactory results. Laparoscopic mini-gastric bypass (LMGB) is known as a modified Mason loop procedure with compatible results to laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB), and is believed to have even less complication rate. Despite adequate and meticulous supplement therapy, anemia is one of the challenges in patients undergoing LMGB. Thus, we aimed to review the prevalence and severity of anemia in patients undergoing LMGB. METHOD A prospectively-maintained database of patients referring to Hazrat Rasoul Akram hospital who underwent LMGB from December 2013 to October 2014 was reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS A total of 113 consecutive patients were included in the study. The mean age was 38.7 ± 9.8 years. Mean Body mass index (BMI) was 45.5 ± 6.1 kg/m2 preoperatively and 36.7 ± 5.5 kg/m2 and 33.0 ± 5.3 kg/m2 three and six months after the procedure, respectively. (P = 0.001) Mean excess body weight loss after the procedure was 20% and 53% at three and six months post operatively. Serum hemoglobin (Hb) level decreased significantly in three months (P = 0.036) and remained unchanged in six months compared to 3-month (P = 0.385). Vitamin B12 level increased significantly in three months (P = 0.010) and then decrease in six months to the preoperative level (P = 0.889). CONCLUSION LMGB is a safe, feasible and an effective alternative weight loss procedure. Simply, anemia can be prevented by utilizing therapeutic dose of multivitamin in patients who underwent this procedure.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effects of a tripeptide iron (REE-Fe) on iron-deficiency anemia rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into seven groups: a normal control group, an iron-deficiency control group, and iron-deficiency groups treated with ferrous sulfate (FeSO4), ferrous glycinate (Fe-Gly), or REE-Fe at low-, medium-, or high-dose groups. The rats in the iron-deficiency groups were fed on an iron-deficient diet to establish iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) model. After the model established, different iron supplements were given to the rats once a day by intragastric administration for 21 days. The results showed that REE-Fe had effective restorative action returning body weight, organ coefficients, and hematological parameters in IDA rats to normal level. In addition, comparing with FeSO4 or Fe-Gly, high-dose REE-Fe was more effective on improving the levels of renal coefficient, total iron-binding capacity, and transferrin. Furthermore, the liver hepcidin messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in the high-dose group was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that in the FeSO4 or Fe-Gly group and showed no significant difference (p > 0.05) with the normal control group. The findings suggest that REE-Fe is an effective source of iron supplement for IDA rats and might be exploited as a new iron fortifier.

Abstract
A reduction in exercise efficiency with aging limits daily living activities. We examined whether 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) with sodium ferrous citrate (SFC) increased exercise efficiency and voluntary achievement of interval walking training (IWT) in older women. Ten women [65 ± 3(SD) yr] who had performed IWT for >12 mo and were currently performing IWT participated in this study. The study was conducted in a placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover design. All subjects underwent two trials for 7 days each in which they performed IWT with ALA+SFC (100 and 115 mg/day, respectively) or placebo supplement intake (CNT), intermittently with a 2-wk washout period. Before and after each trial, subjects underwent a graded cycling test at 27.0 °C atmospheric temperature and 50% relative humidity, and oxygen consumption rate, carbon dioxide production rate, and lactate concentration in plasma were measured. Furthermore, for the first 6 days of each trial, exercise intensity for IWT was measured by accelerometry. We found that, in the ALA+SFC trial, oxygen consumption rate and carbon dioxide production rate during graded cycling decreased by 12% (P < 0.001) and 11% (P = 0.001) at every workload, respectively, accompanied by a 16% reduction in lactate concentration in plasma (P < 0.001), although all remained unchanged in the CNT trial (P > 0.2). All of the reductions were significantly greater in the ALA+SFC than the CNT trial (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the training days, impulse, and time at fast walking were 42% (P = 0.028), 102% (P = 0.027), and 69% (P = 0.039) higher during the ALA+SFC than the CNT intake period, respectively. Thus ALA+SFC supplementation augmented exercise efficiency and thereby improved IWT achievement in older women.

Abstract
AIM To study the cytostatic and some biological effects of aminoferrocene using mice with L1210 lymphoid leukemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS Experiments were performed on BDF1 male mice (DBA/2, female × C57Bl/6, male) with transplantable L1210 lymphoid leukemia. Determination of antitumor activity of Benzyl-Fc Boron (Bn), it was injected intraperitoneally 6 times daily, starting on day 2 after L1210 leukemia cell transplantation. Doses of Bn such as 26; 260 and 2600 μg/kg were used. The determination of intracellular content of cardiolipin, thiols, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and also analysis of Annexin V positivity and mitochondrial transmembrane potential (JC-1 staining) were performed with use of flow cytometry. The levels of "free iron" complexes, transferrin active forms and the rate of NO generation were measured by EPR-specroscopy. RESULTS Six daily injections of Bn at a dose of 26 μg/kg resulted in an increased survival of mice with L1210 leukemia by 28% (p < 0.05). Bn led to an increase of apoptotic cells number and ROS amount in leukemia cells. Besides, Bn caused a decrease of cardiolipin and nonprotein thiol compounds content. The membrane electrochemical potential of cell mitochondria was decreased also after Bn administration. Studies using EPR-spectroscopy revealed a significant increase in a level of "free iron", content of transferrin active species and generation rate of NO by inducible NO-synthase in L1210 cells after aminoferrocene administration. CONCLUSION Our data indicate that Benzyl-Fc Boron can be promising candidate for realizing a new strategy of anticancer therapy with the use of ROS-inducing agents.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Although blood donation is allowed every 8 weeks in the United States, recovery of hemoglobin to the currently accepted standard (12.5 g/dL) is frequently delayed, and some donors become anemic. OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of oral iron supplementation on hemoglobin recovery time (days to recovery of 80% of hemoglobin removed) and recovery of iron stores in iron-depleted ("low ferritin," ≤26 ng/mL) and iron-replete ("higher ferritin," >26 ng/mL) blood donors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Randomized, nonblinded clinical trial of blood donors stratified by ferritin level, sex, and age conducted in 4 regional blood centers in the United States in 2012. Included were 215 eligible participants aged 18 to 79 years who had not donated whole blood or red blood cells within 4 months. INTERVENTIONS One tablet of ferrous gluconate (37.5 mg of elemental iron) daily or no iron for 24 weeks (168 days) after donating a unit of whole blood (500 mL). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Time to recovery of 80% of the postdonation decrease in hemoglobin and recovery of ferritin level to baseline as a measure of iron stores. RESULTS The mean baseline hemoglobin levels were comparable in the iron and no-iron groups and declined from a mean (SD) of 13.4 (1.1) g/dL to 12.0 (1.2) g/dL after donation in the low-ferritin group and from 14.2 (1.1) g/dL to 12.9 (1.2) g/dL in the higher-ferritin group. Compared with participants who did not receive iron supplementation, those who received iron supplementation had shortened time to 80% hemoglobin recovery in both the low-ferritin (mean, 32 days, interquartile range [IQR], 30-34, vs 158 days, IQR, 126->168) and higher-ferritin groups (31 days, IQR, 29-33, vs 78 days, IQR, 66-95). Median time to recovery to baseline ferritin levels in the low-ferritin group taking iron was 21 days (IQR, 12-84). For participants not taking iron, recovery to baseline was longer than 168 days (IQR, 128->168). Median time to recovery to baseline in the higher-ferritin group taking iron was 107 days (IQR, 75-141), and for participants not taking iron, recovery to baseline was longer than 168 days (IQR, >168->168). Recovery of iron stores in all participants who received supplements took a median of 76 days (IQR, 20-126); for participants not taking iron, median recovery time was longer than 168 days (IQR, 147->168 days; P < .001). Without iron supplements, 67% of participants did not recover iron stores by 168 days. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Among blood donors with normal hemoglobin levels, low-dose iron supplementation, compared with no supplementation, reduced time to 80% recovery of the postdonation decrease in hemoglobin concentration in donors with low ferritin (≤26 ng/mL) or higher ferritin (>26 ng/mL). Abstract
BACKGROUND Food fortification is one approach for addressing anemia, but information on program effectiveness is limited. OBJECTIVE We evaluated the impact of Costa Rica's fortification program on anemia in women aged 15-45 y and children aged 1-7 y. DESIGN Reduced iron, an ineffective fortificant, was replaced by ferrous fumarate in wheat flour in 2002, and ferrous bisglycinate was added to maize flour in 1999 and to liquid and powdered milk in 2001. We used a one-group pretest-posttest design and national survey data from 1996 (baseline; 910 women, 965 children) and 2008-2009 (endline; 863 women, 403 children) to assess changes in iron deficiency (children only) and anemia. Data were also available for sentinel sites (1 urban, 1 rural) for 1999-2000 (405 women, 404 children) and 2008-2009 (474 women, 195 children), including 24-h recall data in children. Monitoring of fortification levels was routine. RESULTS Foods were fortified as mandated. Fortification provided about one-half the estimated average requirement for iron in children, mostly and equally through wheat flour and milk. Anemia was reduced in children and women in national and sentinel site comparisons. At the national level, anemia declined in children from 19.3% (95% CI: 16.8%, 21.8%) to 4.0% (95% CI: 2.1%, 5.9%) and in women from 18.4% (95% CI: 15.8%, 20.9%) to 10.2% (95% CI: 8.2%, 12.2%). In children, iron deficiency declined from 26.9% (95% CI: 21.1%, 32.7%) to 6.8% (95% CI: 4.2%, 9.3%), and iron deficiency anemia, which was 6.2% (95% CI: 3.0%, 9.3%) at baseline, could no longer be detected at the endline. CONCLUSIONS A plausible impact pathway suggests that fortification improved iron status and reduced anemia. Although unlikely in the Costa Rican context, other explanations cannot be excluded in a pre/post comparison.

Abstract
Iron and oxygen are essential substance for cellular activity in body tissues. Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) can respond to available oxygen changes in the cellular environment and regulate the transcription of a series of target genes. The study was conducted to investigate the effects of iron supplementation on the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) and antioxidant status in rats exposed to high-altitude hypoxia environment. Forty rats were divided into control (CON), hypobaric hypoxia (HH), and hypobaric hypoxia plus ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) (9.93 mg/kg body weight (BW)/day) (HFS) and hypobaric hypoxia plus iron glycinate chelate (Fe-Gly) (11.76 mg/kg BW/day) (HFG) groups. Results showed that Fe-Gly effectively alleviated weight loss and intestinal mucosa damage induced by hypobaric hypoxia, whereas FeSO4 aggravated hypobaric hypoxia-induced weight loss, liver enlargement, spleen atrophy, and intestinal damage. Iron supplementation decreased liver superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity (P < 0.01) and increased iron concentration in the liver compared to HH group (P < 0.001). Moreover, Fe-Gly upregulated liver transferrin expression in messenger RNA (mRNA) level (P < 0.05) and downregulated serum erythropoietin (EPO) concentration (P < 0.01) and liver HIF-1α expression level (P < 0.05 in mRNA level; P < 0.001 in protein level) compared to HH group. The study indicated that FeSO4 supplementation at high altitudes aggravated the oxidative damage of tissues and organs that could be mediated through production of malondialdehyde (MDA) and inhibition antioxidant enzyme activities. Fe-Gly can protect hypobaric hypoxia-induced tissues injury. Moreover, iron supplementation at high altitudes affected HIF-1α-mediated regulating expression of targeting genes such as EPO and transferrin. The study highlights that iron supplementation under hypobaric hypoxia environment has possible limitation, and efficient supplementation form and dosage need careful consideration.

Abstract
Infusion of the nitric oxide donors L-Arginine (150 mg/kg bolus) and Oxacom (3,2 µM/ kg bolus) with saline solution has been shown improves cardiovascular and metabolic changes in animal model of hemorrhagic shock. As a result improves survival rats. These data made this effect clinically attractive.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the effects of iron deficiency (ID) or iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) on oxidative stress and renal tubular functions before and after treatment of children. A total of 30 children with a diagnosis of IDA constituted the IDA group and 32 children with a diagnosis of ID constituted the ID group. Control group consisted 38 age-matched children. Serum ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), serum, and urinary sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), creatinine (Cr), uric acid (UA), urinary N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) levels, and intra-erythrocyte malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels were measured before and after iron therapy in the IDA and ID groups, whereas it was studied once in the control group. We have divided the study group in groups according to age (infants <2 years, children 3-9 years, and adolescents 10-15 years). Patients with IDA (infant, adolescent) and ID (infant, children, and adolescent) had a significantly high level of MDA in post-treatment period in comparison to those of healthy control. Patients with IDA (children, adolescent) and ID (infant, children) had a significantly high level of pre-treatment GSH-Px than controls. Post-treatment SOD was lower in IDA (children and adolescent) groups than control and post-treatment CAT was lower in IDA and ID (adolescent) groups than control. These findings show that ferrous sulfate used in the treatment of ID or IDA could lead to oxidative stress; however, a marked deterioration of in proximal renal tubular functions was not seen.

Abstract
Rates of iron deficiency are high amongst healthy young women. Cognitive impairment occurs secondary to iron deficiency in infants and children, but evaluation of the impact on cognition among young women is inconsistent. The aim was to determine the suitability of the IntegNeuro test battery for assessing cognitive function in iron-deficient and iron-sufficient young women. A pilot double-blinded, placebo-controlled intervention trial was conducted in iron-deficient (serum ferritin ≤ 20 μg/L and haemoglobin > 120 g/L) and iron-sufficient young women (18-35 years). Cognitive function and haematological markers of iron status were measured at baseline and follow-up. Iron-deficient participants (n = 24) were randomised to receive placebo, 60 mg or 80 mg elemental iron daily supplements for 16 weeks. A control group of iron-sufficient participants (n = 8) was allocated to placebo. Change scores for Impulsivity and Attention were significantly greater in plasma ferritin improvers than in non-improvers (p = 0.004, p = 0.026). IntegNeuro was easy to administer and acceptable to young women. Based on the differences in Memory and Attention scores between iron-deficient participants on iron treatment and those on placebo, it was decided that between 26 and 84 participants would be required in each iron treatment group for an adequately powered extension of this pilot RCT.

Abstract
A series of ferrocene and (arene)ruthenium(II) complexes attached to the naturally occurring anticancer naphthoquinones plumbagin and juglone was tested for efficacy against various cancer cell lines and for alterations in the mode of action. The plumbagin ferrocene and (p-cymene)Ru(II) conjugates 1c and 2a overcame the multi-drug drug resistance of KB-V1/Vbl cervix carcinoma cells and showed IC50 (72 h) values around 1 μM in growth inhibition assays using 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT). They were further investigated for their influence on the cell cycle of KB-V1/Vbl and HCT-116 colon carcinoma cells, on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by the latter cell line, for their substrate character for the P-glycoprotein drug eflux pump via the calcein-AM efflux assays, and for DNA affinity by the electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). The derivatives 1c and 2a increased the number of dead cancer cells (sub-G0/G1 fraction) in a dose- and time-dependent manner. ROS levels were significantly increased upon treatment with 1c and 2a. These compounds also showed a greater affinity to linear DNA than plumbagin. While plumbagin did not affect calcein-AM transport by P-glycoprotein the derivatives 1c and 2a exhibited a 50% or 80% inhibition of the P-glycoprotein-mediated calcein-AM efflux relative to the clinically established sensitizer verapamil.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of oral ferrous bisglycinate 25 mg iron/day vs. ferrous sulfate 50 mg iron/day in the prevention of iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in pregnant women. DESIGN Randomized, double-blind, intention-to-treat study. SETTING Antenatal care clinic. SAMPLE 80 healthy ethnic Danish pregnant women. METHODS Women were allocated to ferrous bisglycinate 25 mg elemental iron (Aminojern®) (n=40) or ferrous sulfate 50 mg elemental iron (n=40) from 15 to 19 weeks of gestation to delivery. Hematological status (hemoglobin, red blood cell indices) and iron status (plasma iron, plasma transferrin, plasma transferrin saturation, plasma ferritin) were measured at 15-19 weeks (baseline), 27-28 weeks and 36-37 weeks of gestation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Occurrence of ID (ferritin <15 μg/L) and IDA (ferritin <12 μg/L and hemoglobin <110 g/L). RESULTS At inclusion, there were no significant differences between the bisglycinate and sulfate group concerning hematological status and iron status. The frequencies of ID and IDA were low and not significantly different in the two iron groups. The frequency of gastrointestinal complaints was lower in the bisglycinate than in the sulfate group (P=0.001). Newborns weight was slightly higher in the bisglycinate vs. the sulfate group (3601±517 g vs. 3395±426 g, P=0.09). CONCLUSIONS In the prevention of ID and IDA, ferrous bisglycinate was not inferior to ferrous sulfate. Ferrous bisglycinate in a low dose of 25 mg iron/day appears to be adequate to prevent IDA in more than 95% of Danish women during pregnancy and postpartum.

Abstract
SUBJECTS AND METHODS Study was conducted in Ain Shams University hospitals on 100 pregnant women with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA), including 50 cases infected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and 50 cases negative for H. pylori infection. Cases with symptomatic gastritis or hyperemesis gravidarum were not included in the study, obstetric history, sociodemographic and dietary variables were also assessed. Hemoglobin level, serum iron, serum ferritin, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), H. pylori serum antibody, stool analysis to exclude parasitic infection causing IDA, occult blood in stool and ultrasound for the fetus to ensure its cardiac pulsations and to exclude any associated abnormality were all done for all patients. Iron therapy in a fixed dose was given to all patients for 1 month. Response was estimated and statistical comparison was done between both groups. Eradication of H. pylori was done in positive cases by triple therapy in the second trimester and iron therapy was given after treatment in the same dose for another month. Their response to treatment after eradication was compared to their response to iron therapy prior to H. pylori eradication. RESULTS Hb levels, serum iron, serum ferritin were lower and TIBC was higher in H. pylori-infected cases than negative ones. The average rise of Hb in cases negative to H. pylori was higher than those positive to H. pylori. After comparing response of cases infected with H. pylori to iron therapy before and after eradication of H. pylori, it was found that rise of Hb was higher after treatment than before eradication of H. pylori. CONCLUSION Response to iron therapy in cases of iron deficiency anemia in patients without H. pylori infection was better than those infected with H. pylori. H. pylori eradication in the infected cases increased their response to iron therapy.

Abstract
Worldwide, the most prevalent nutritional deficiency is iron. The strategies for iron supplementation often fail due to poor adherence to supplementation methods contributed to unpleasant sensory characteristics. An alternative is the use of microencapsulated nutrients for home fortification in order to mask undesirable tastes and to allow its release in strategic sites of the gastrointestinal tract. Toward this end, pea protein concentrate was tested as a natural, edible and alternative material and the spray-drying technique was utilized for the preparation of microparticles containing ferrous sulfate. Their physical and chemical characteristics were evaluated. The microparticles had a spherical shape and grooves with an average size ranging between 2 and 3 μm. Analysis by in vitro assays tested the release of iron in simulated salivary and gastric fluids and its intestinal absorption in Caco-2 cells. No dissolution of iron occurred in the salivary medium whereas the sensory analysis showed good acceptance of a product which incorporated 5.5 mg of iron per 100 g portion of food. Thus, the effectiveness of microencapsulation was demonstrated by utilizing a plant protein as an encapsulating matrix for the controlled release of iron and capable of preserving the bioaccessibility of ferrous sulfate.
