Abstract
Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) surface antigen 1 (SAG1) is crucial for tachyzoite invasion into host cells. However, the role of SAG1 in interaction with host cells remains unknown. The primary objective of this study was to analyze and validate the interaction between SAG1 and host cells. RACK1, an intracellular multifunctional protein, was identified as a SAG1 binding partner in host cells. Furthermore, the expression of RACK1 is manipulated by SAG1, and depletion of RACK1 negatively regulated host cell viability. These results imply that through interaction with RACK1, SAG1 preserves the viability of host cells to satisfy the survival needs of T. gondii. Our findings suggest a novel role for SAG1 in intracellular parasitism.

Abstract
Transgenic models of familial Alzheimer's disease (AD) serve as valuable tools for probing the molecular mechanisms associated with amyloid-beta (Aβ)-induced pathology. In this meta-analysis, we sought to evaluate levels of phosphorylated tau (p-tau) and explore potential age-related variations in tau hyperphosphorylation, within mouse models of AD. The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched for studies measuring soluble p-tau in 5xFAD, APPswe/PSEN1de9, J20 and APP23 mice. Data were extracted and analyzed using standardized procedures. For the 5xFAD model, the search yielded 36 studies eligible for meta-analysis. Levels of p-tau were higher in 5xFAD mice relative to control, a difference that was evident in both the carboxy-terminal (CT) and proline-rich (PR) domains of tau. Age negatively moderated the relationship between genotype and CT phosphorylated tau in studies using hybrid mice, female mice, and preparations from the neocortex. For the APPswe/PSEN1de9 model, the search yielded 27 studies. Analysis showed tau hyperphosphorylation in transgenic vs. control animals, evident in both the CT and PR regions of tau. Age positively moderated the relationship between genotype and PR domain phosphorylated tau in the neocortex of APPswe/PSEN1de9 mice. A meta-analysis was not performed for the J20 and APP23 models, due to the limited number of studies measuring p-tau levels in these mice (<10 studies). Although tau is hyperphosphorylated in both 5xFAD and APPswe/PSEN1de9 mice, the effects of ageing on p-tau are contingent upon the model being examined. These observations emphasize the importance of tailoring model selection to the appropriate disease stage when considering the relationship between Aβ and tau, and suggest that there are optimal intervention points for the administration of both anti-amyloid and anti-tau therapies.

Abstract
Background Panax ginseng Meyer polysaccharides exhibit various biological functions, like antagonizing galectin-3-mediated cell adhesion and migration. Galectin-8 (Gal-8), with its linker-joined N- and C-terminal carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs), is also crucial to these biological processes, and thus plays a role in various pathological disorders. Yet the effect of ginseng-derived polysaccharides in modulating Gal-8 function has remained unclear. Methods P. ginseng-derived pectin was chromatographically isolated and enzymatically digested to obtain a series of polysaccharides. Biolayer Interferometry (BLI) quantified their binding affinity to Gal-8, and their inhibitory effects on Gal-8 was assessed by hemagglutination, cell migration and T-cell apoptosis. Results Our ginseng-derived pectin polysaccharides consist mostly of rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) and homogalacturonan (HG). BLI shows that Gal-8 binding rests primarily in RG-I and its β-1,4-galactan side chains, with sub-micromolar KD values. Both N- and C-terminal Gal-8 CRDs bind RG-I, with binding correlated with Gal-8-mediated function. Conclusion P. ginseng RG-I pectin β-1,4-galactan side chains are crucial to binding Gal-8 and antagonizing its function. This study enhances our understanding of galectin-sugar interactions, information that may be used in the development of pharmaceutical agents targeting Gal-8.

Abstract
This study investigated the inhibition mechanism of cinnamic acid-based phenolic acids (cinnamic acid: CIA, 3,4-dimethoxy cinnamic acid: 3,4-mCIA, caffeic acid: CA, ferulic acid: FA) on starch digestion. CA, FA, and 3,4-mCIA contributed to reducing the rapidly digested starch content and increasing the resistant starch content. The enzyme activity inhibition results responded that the four phenolic acids inhibited α-amylase activity better than α-glucosidase. The order of IC50 against α-amylase and α-glucosidase was CA > FA > 3,4-mCIA > CIA. Phenolic acid's benzene ring formed conjugated Pi-systems with the amino acid residues of α-amylase. Salt-bridge interactions were the main driving forces for the binding of phenolic acids to α-glucosidase. The binding was stabilized by the hydroxyl (OH) group and the methoxy on the benzene ring, where the OH exerted a better effect. These results illuminate the inhibition mechanism of starch digestion with cinnamic acid-based phenolic acids from an interaction perspective.

Abstract
Whether adopting healthy lifestyles and maintaining moderate levels of essential metals could attenuate the reduction of heart rate variability (HRV) related to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure are largely unknown. In this study, we measured urinary metals and PAHs as well as HRV, and constructed a healthy lifestyle score in 1267 coke oven workers. Linear regression models were used to explore the association of healthy lifestyle score and essential metals with HRV, and interaction analysis was performed to investigate the potential interaction between healthy lifestyle score, essential metals, and PAHs on HRV. Mean age of the participants was 41.9 years (84.5% male). Per one point higher healthy lifestyle score was associated with a 2.5% (95% CI, 1.0%-3.9%) higher standard deviation of all normal to normal intervals (SDNN), 2.1% (95% CI, 0.5%-3.6%) higher root mean square of successive differences in adjacent NN intervals (r-MSSD), 4.3% (95% CI, 0.4%-8.2%) higher low frequency, 4.4% (95% CI, 0.2%-8.5%) higher high frequency, and 4.4% (95% CI, 1.2%-7.6%) higher total power, respectively. Urinary level of chromium was positively associated with HRV indices, with the corresponding β (95% CI) (%) was 5.17 (2.84, 7.50) for SDNN, 4.29 (1.74, 6.84) for r-MSSD, 12.26 (6.08, 18.45) for low frequency, 12.61 (5.87, 19.36) for high frequency, and 11.31 (6.19, 16.43) for total power. Additionally, a significant interaction was found between healthy lifestyle score and urinary total hydroxynaphthalene on SDNN (Pinteraction = 0.04), and higher level of urinary chromium could attenuate the adverse effect of total hydroxynaphthalene level on HRV (all Pinteraction <0.05). Findings of our study suggest adopting healthy lifestyle and maintaining a relatively high level of chromium might attenuate the reduction of HRV related to total hydroxynaphthalene exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Prenatal exposure to air pollution is robustly associated with fetal growth restriction but the extent to which it is associated with postnatal growth and the risk of childhood obesity remains unknown. We examined the association of prenatal exposure to air pollution with offspring obesity related measures and evaluated the possible protective effect of maternal fruits and vegetables intake (FV). METHODS We included 633 mother-child pairs from the Rhea pregnancy cohort in Crete, Greece. Fine particles (PM2.5 and PM10) exposure levels during pregnancy were estimated using land-use regression models. We measured weight, height and waist circumference at 4 and 6 years of age, and body composition analysis was performed at 6 years using bioimpedance. Maternal diet was evaluated by means of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire in mid-pregnancy. Adjusted associations were obtained via multivariable regression analyses and multiplicative interaction was used to evaluate the potential modifying role of FV intake. RESULTS Exposure to PMs in utero was not associated with measures of adiposity at 4 or 6 years of age. Associations at 4 years did not differ according to maternal consumption of FV. However, at 6 years, among children whose mothers reported consuming less than 5 servings of FV per day, one SD increase in PM10 during pregnancy was associated with increased BMI (beta 0.41 kg/m2, 95% CI: -0.06, 0.88, p-interaction = 0.037) and increased waist circumference (beta 0.83 cm, 95% CI: -0.38, 2.05, p-interaction = 0.043) and one SD increase in PM2.5 was associated with increased fat mass (beta 0.5 kg, 95% CI: 0.0, 0.99, p-interaction = 0.039) and increased percentage of body fat (beta 1.06%, 95% CI: -0.06, 2.17, p-interaction = 0.035). Similarly, higher prenatal PM2.5 and PM10 exposure was associated with increased risk for obesity and abdominal obesity at 6 years only in the low FV group. CONCLUSIONS Exposure to fine particulate matter during pregnancy was not associated with obesity-related measures at 4 and 6 years. However, only among offspring of mothers who consumed inadequate FV, we observed higher obesity-related measures at 6 years. Our results indicate that mothers' diet during pregnancy may play a role in the relationship between air-pollution and childhood obesity.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the role of amylose and amylopectin in the formation of starch-polyphenol complex and elucidate the interaction mechanisms. Gallic acid (GA) was used to complex with maize starch with various amylose contents. Results showed GA formed V-type crystals with normal maize starch (NMS) and high amylose maize starch (HAMS), while higher relative crystallinity was exhibited in HAMS-GA complexes than NMS counterparts. Molecular structure analysis revealed more amylose in GA-starch complexes than in treated starch counterparts without GA, and this was more apparent in HAMS than NMS, implying amylose is preferred to complex with GA than amylopectin. FTIR detected higher R1047/1022 value in starch-GA complexes than their starch counterparts without GA, suggesting increased short-range ordered structrure of complexes. Typical signatures of hydrophobic interactions were further revealed by isothermal titration calorimetry, indicating the complexation of GA to starch is mainly through hydrophobic bonds. More binding sites were observed for HAMS (72.50) than NMS (11.33), which proves the preferences of amylose to bind with GA. Molecular dynamics simulated the complexation of GA to amylose, and confirmed hydrophobic bond is the main interaction force. These findings would provide guidance for precise design and utilization of starch-polyphenol complexes in functional foods.

Abstract
Carotenoid astaxanthin (Ax), a pink-red pigment, with its anti-oxidative feature, is useful as a therapeutic element for numerous diseases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the binding affinity of Ax to double strand (ds) DNA evaluated by using the fluorescence spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and docking approaches. The fluorescence results show that Ax can quench the intensity of DNA fluorescence via a static quenching way. In the SPR method, for affinity evaluation, DNA molecules were attached on a gold sensor surface. Using different amounts of ds DNA, the kinetic values KD, KA, and Ka were calculated. The Van't Hoff equation was used to estimate thermodynamic parameters including enthalpy (∆H), entropy (∆S) and Gibbs free energy (∆G) changes. The obtained results for KD in SPR (6.89×10-5 M) and fluorescence (KD=0.76×10-5 M) methods were in line with each other. Thermodynamic studies were carried out at four different temperatures, and the resulted negative data for ΔH and ΔS displayed that the main binding strength in the interaction of Ax with DNA was hydrogen bonding. ΔG value calculated by fluorescence method was near -38 kJ. mol-1 and using the docking method, estimated -9.95 kcal. mol-1 (-41.63 kJ. mol-1) which shows the binding behavior has an exothermic and spontaneous mechanism. Molecular docking results confirmed that the side chains of Ax interact specifically with base pairs and the DNA backbone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meaningful interprofessional education (IPE) involves students from at least two professions interacting to learn with, about, and from one another. Our objective was to describe a novel online approach used to create meaningful IPE within a social determinants of health (SDoH) workshop. INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION ACTIVITY This online workshop integrated four different professions' perspectives on SDoH (social-work, public-health, nursing, and pharmacy). Each six-student interprofessional team was assigned a local neighborhood. This week-long workshop had numerous activities (pre- and post-workshop quizzes, a SDoH-primer video, video self-introduction to teammates, a windshield questionnaire with two subsequent clinical cases, a post-workshop reflection, and post-workshop evaluation). For discussion, asynchronous video-based responses were used instead of traditional text-based discussion-boards. DISCUSSION Quantitatively comparing quiz scores, students' SDoH knowledge increased with this workshop. Qualitatively from evaluations, most students found this workshop helpful and meaningful. Supporting use of video-based responses, many students' favorite aspect was interacting and collaborating within their interprofessional teams, although some students desired synchronous activities instead. Faculty facilitators confirmed that meaningful IPE interactions occurred. IMPLICATIONS In short, students from multiple health-professions learned SDoH-content and, using video-based responses, interacted asynchronously during this online workshop. This report demonstrated one tool available to help facilitate meaningful IPE asynchronously. This asynchronous, online IPE workshop appears to be a promising format to be integrated with other in-person IPE sessions.

Abstract
Landfill leachate is produced in the process of sanitary landfilling, which contains significant amounts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and heavy metal contaminants. Insights into the interactions between heavy metals and DOM in landfill leachate are beneficial for the understanding of heavy metal fates and optimization of landfill leachate treatment. In this work, the coherent structural changes of landfill leachate DOM during binding with various heavy metals were explored through the integration of molecular spectroscopic methods with chemometrics and statistic correlation analyses. The results indicate that protein substances, phenolic and discrete carboxyl groups in landfill leachate DOM were involved in the complexation with heavy metals, resulting in the formation of conjugated macromolecules/aggregates with high aromaticity and molecular weight/size. The fluorescent protein-like, fulvic acid-like, and humic-like fractions in DOM were engaged in the interaction, which were closely related to phenolic-like and carboxylic-like structure. Compared to membrane concentrates DOM, raw leachate DOM exhibited a higher binding affinity to heavy metals (especially for Cu2+, whilst the weakest was Cd2+). The integrated approach provides useful information in elucidating the binding processes of metals with landfill leachate DOM, including site heterogeneity, binding strength and functional group sequences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although many studies have examined the association between prenatal air pollution exposure and gestational diabetes (GDM), the relevant exposure windows remain inconclusive. We aim to examine the association between preconception and trimester-specific exposure to PM2.5 and NO2 and GDM risk and explore modifying effects of maternal age, pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), smoking, exercise during pregnancy, race and ethnicity, and neighborhood disadvantage. METHODS Analyses included 192,508 birth records of singletons born to women without pre-existing diabetes in Western New York, 2004-2016. Daily PM2.5 and NO2 at 1-km2 grids were estimated from ensemble-based models. We assigned each birth with exposures averaged in preconception and each trimester based on residential zip-codes. We used logistic regression to examine the associations and distributed lag models (DLMs) to explore the sensitive windows by month. Relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) and multiplicative interaction terms were calculated. RESULTS GDM was associated with PM2.5 averaged in the first two trimesters (per 2.5 μg/m3: OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.14) or from preconception to the second trimester (per 2.5 μg/m3: OR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.18). NO2 exposure during each averaging period was associated with GDM risk (per 10 ppb, preconception: OR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.14; first trimester: OR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.08, 1.16; second trimester: OR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.14). In DLMs, sensitive windows were identified in the 5th and 6th gestational months for PM2.5 and one month before and three months after conception for NO2. Evidence of interaction was identified for pre-pregnancy BMI with PM2.5 (P-for-interaction = 0.023; RERI = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.10, 0.33) and with NO2 (P-for-interaction = 0.164; RERI = 0.16, 95% CI: 0.04, 0.27). CONCLUSION PM2.5 and NO2 exposure may increase GDM risk, and sensitive windows may be the late second trimester for PM2.5 and periconception for NO2. Women with higher pre-pregnancy BMI may be more susceptible to exposure effects.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Previous studies have identified an interaction between protein kinase inhibitors (PKIs) and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in patients with lung cancer. This type of interaction may reduce the efficacy of PKIs. However, the effect of PKI-PPI interaction on patient mortality remains controversial. This study set out to determine the impact of PKI-PPI interaction on overall survival for lung cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was conducted using data from the French National Health Care Database from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2021. We identified patients with: (i) an age equal to or greater than 18 years; (ii) lung cancer; and (iii) at least one reimbursement for one of the following drugs: erlotinib, gefitinib, afatinib and osimertinib. Patients were followed-up between the first date of PKI reimbursement and either December 31, 2021 or if they died, the date on which death occurred. The cumulative exposure to PPI duration during PKI treatment was calculated as the ratio between the number of concomitant exposure days to PKI and PPI and the number of exposure days to PKI. A survival analysis using a Cox proportional hazards model was then performed to assess the risk of death following exposure to a PKI-PPI interaction. RESULTS 34,048 patients received at least one reimbursement for PKIs of interest in our study: 26,133 (76.8 %) were exposed to erlotinib; 3,142 (9.2 %) to gefitinib; 1,417 (4.2 %) to afatinib; and 3,356 (9.9 %) to osimertinib. Patients with concomitant exposure to PKI-PPI interaction during 20 % or more of the PKI treatment period demonstrated an increased risk of death (HR, 1.60 [95 % CI, 1.57-1.64]) compared to other patients. When this cut-off varied from 10 % to 80 %, the estimated HR ranged from 1.46 [95 % CI, 1.43-1.50] to 2.19 [95 % CI, 2.12-2.25]. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION In our study, an elevated risk of death was observed in patients exposed to PKI-PPI interaction. Finally, we were able to identify a dose-dependent effect for this interaction. This deleterious effect of osimertinib and PPI was revealed for the first time in real life conditions.

Abstract
Both body mass index (BMI) and family history of cancer are established risk factors for female breast cancer. However, few studies explored the potential interaction between both factors. We assessed the association of BMI and its interaction with family cancer history on the risk of female breast cancer in Shanghai, China. Based on a population-based prospective cohort study started from 2008 to 2012 with 15,055 Chinese female participants in Minhang district, Shanghai. Cox regression models were used to estimate the association of BMI and its interaction with a family history of cancer on breast cancer risk. The additive interaction was evaluated by the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) and the attributable proportion due to interaction (AP), and the multiplicative interaction was assessed by the product term (BMI* family history of cancer) in the Cox regression model. Compared with BMI of < 24 kg/m2 and no family history of cancer, women with BMI of ≥ 24 kg/m2 and a family history of cancer had a higher risk for breast cancer with HR 2.06 (95% CI 1.39, 3.06). There was an additive interaction between BMI and family history of cancer on breast cancer incidence, with the RERI being 0.29 (95% CI 0.08, 0.51) and the AP being 0.37 (95% CI 0.08, 0.66). The coexistence of obesity and cancer family history may exacerbate breast cancer incidence risk, highlighting the importance of weight management in women with a family history of cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The majority of congenital heart diseases (CHDs) are thought to result from the interactions of genetics and the environment factors. This study aimed to assess the association of maternal non-occupational phthalates exposure, metabolic gene polymorphisms and their interactions with risk of CHDs in offspring. METHODS A multicenter case-control study of 245 mothers with CHDs infants and 268 control mothers of health infant was conducted from six hospitals. Maternal urinary concentrations of eight phthalate metabolites were measured by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Twenty single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in cytochrome P450 family 2 subfamily C member 9 (CYP2C9) and 19 (CYP2C19), uridine diphosphate (UDP) glucuronosyl transferase family 1 member A7 (UGT1A7), family 2 member B7 (UGT2B7) and B15(UGT2B15) genes were genotyped. The multivariate logistic regressions were used to estimate the association between maternal phthalates exposure or gene polymorphisms and risk of CHDs. Generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) was used to analyze the gene-gene and gene-phthalates exposure interactions. RESULTS There was no significant difference in phthalate metabolites concentrations between the cases and controls. No significant positive associations were observed between maternal exposure to phthalates and CHDs. The SNPs of UGT1A7 gene at rs4124874 (under three models, log-additive: aOR = 1.74, 95% CI:1.28-2.37; dominant: aOR = 1.86, 95% CI:1.25-2.78; recessive: aOR = 2.50, 95% CI: 1.26-4.94) and rs887829 (under the recessive model: aOR = 13.66, 95% CI: 1.54-121) were significantly associated with an increased risk of CHDs. Furthermore, the associations between rs4124874 (under log-additive and dominant models) of UGT1A7 were statistically significant after the false discovery rate correction. No significant gene-gene or gene-phthalate metabolites interactions were observed. CONCLUSIONS The polymorphisms of maternal UGT1A7 gene at rs4124874 and rs887829 were significantly associated with an increased risk of CHDs. More large-scale studies or prospective study designs are needed to confirm or refute our findings in the future.

Abstract
The Dengue virus (DENV) is the most significant arthropod-borne viral pathogen in humans with 400 million infections annually. DENV comprises four distinct serotypes (DENV-1 to -4) which complicates vaccine development. Any of the four serotypes can cause clinical illness but with distinctive infection dynamics. Variations in sequences identified within the four genomes induce structural differences in crucial RNA motifs that were suggested to be correlated to the degree of pathogenicity among DENV-1 to -4. In particular, the RNA Stem-loop A (SLA) at the 5'-end of the genome, acts as a key regulator of the viral replication cycle by interacting with the viral NS5 polymerase to initiate the minus-strand viral RNA synthesis and later to methylate and cap the synthesized RNA. The molecular details of this interaction remain not fully described. Here, we report the solution secondary structures of SLA from DENV-1 to -4. Our results highlight that the four SLA exhibit structural and dynamic differences. Secondly, to determine whether SLA RNA contains serotype-specific determinants for the recognition by the viral NS5 protein, we investigated interactions between SLA from DENV -1 to -4 and DENV2 NS5 using combined biophysical approaches. Our results show that NS5 from DENV2 is able to bind SLA from other serotypes, but that other viral or host factors may be necessary to stabilize the complex and promote the catalytically active state of the NS5. By contrast, we show that a serotype-specific binding is driven by specific interactions involving conformational changes within the SLA RNA.

Abstract
The relationship of exposure to benzo [a]pyrene (BaP) with lung cancer risk has been firmly established, but whether this association could be modified by other environmental or genetic factors remains to be explored. To investigate whether and how zinc (Zn) and genetic predisposition modify the association between BaP and lung cancer, we performed a case-cohort study with a 5.4-years median follow-up duration, comprising a representative subcohort of 1399 participants and 359 incident lung cancer. The baseline concentrations of benzo [a]pyrene diol epoxide-albumin adduct (BPDE-Alb) and Zn were quantified. We also genotyped the participants and computed the polygenic risk score (PRS) for lung cancer. Our findings indicated that elevated BPDE-Alb and PRS were linked to increased lung cancer risk, with the HR (95%CI) of 1.54 (1.36, 1.74) per SD increment in ln-transformed BPDE-Alb and 1.27 (1.14, 1.41) per SD increment in PRS, but high plasma Zn level was linked to a lower lung cancer risk [HR (95%CI) per SD increment in ln-transformed Zn = 0.77 (0.66, 0.91)]. There was evidence of effect modification by Zn on BaP-lung cancer association (P for multiplicative interaction = 0.008). As Zn concentrations increased from the lowest to highest tertile, the lung cancer risk per SD increment in ln-transformed BPDE-Alb decreased from 2.07 (1.48, 2.89) to 1.45 (1.03, 2.05) to 1.33 (0.90, 1.95). Additionally, we observed a significant synergistic interaction of BPDE-Alb and PRS [RERI (95%CI) = 0.85 (0.03, 1.67)], with 42% of the incident lung cancer cases among individuals with high BPDE-Alb and high PRS attributable to their additive effect [AP (95%CI) = 0.42 (0.14, 0.69)]. This study provided the first prospective epidemiological evidence that Zn has protective effect against BaP-induced lung tumorigenesis, whereas high genetic risk can enhance the harmful effect of BaP. These findings may provide novel insight into the environment-environment and environment-gene interaction underlying lung cancer development, which may help to develop prevention and intervention strategies to manage BaP-induced lung cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study analyses the survival of hospitalized patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) due to COVID-19 and identifies the risk groups for death due to COVID-19 from the identification of potential interactions between its predictors. METHODS This was a retrospective longitudinal study with data from 1,756,917 patients reported in the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System from 26 February 2020 to 31 December 2022. In this study, all adult and older (≥ 20 years) patients were hospitalized with SARS due to COVID-19, with death as the outcome. Survival tree analysis was used to identify potential interactions between the predictors. A model was built for each year of study. RESULTS Hospital lethalitywas 33.2%. The worst survival curve was observed among those who underwent invasive mechanical ventilation and were aged 80 years or older in the three years of the pandemic. Black and brown race/color were predictors of deaths in the years 2020 and 2021 when there was greater demand from the health system due to the greater number of cases. CONCLUSION By applying survival tree analysis we identified several numbers of homogeneous subgroups with different risks for mortality from COVID-19. These findings show the effects of wide inequalities of access by the population, requiring effective policies for the reduction and adequate management of the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The kidney and eyes share common pathways and are thought to be closely connected. Chronic kidney disease and major eye diseases, such as cataract and glaucoma, are strongly associated with age. However, further investigation is needed to understand the joint impact of age and kidney diseases on eye diseases. In this study, we assessed the risk of eye diseases in relation to age and kidney failure in Taiwanese adults. METHODS Our study included 127,561 cancer-free volunteers aged 30 to 70 years who participated in the Taiwan Biobank (TWB) project from 2008 to 2020. Information on the main exposures (kidney failure and age) and the outcome (eye diseases, including glaucoma, cataract, xerophthalmia, and retinal detachment) was collected through questionnaires. RESULTS In general, kidney failure and older age were independently associated with a higher risk of eye, particularly cataract and retinal detachment: prevalence odds ratio (POR); 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.480; 1.635-3.761 for cataract and 3.885; 1.968-7.666 for retinal detachment. A significant interaction between kidney failure and age on cataract was observed (p-value = 0.0002). Age-stratified analysis revealed a higher risk of cataract among patients with kidney failure aged below 50 (POR = 6.534; 95% CI = 2.493-17.124) and between 50 and 60 years (POR = 3.957; 95%CI = 1.986-7.881). Combining kidney failure and age (reference: no kidney failure and age < 50 years), kidney failure in all age groups was associated with a higher risk of cataract. The PORs; 95% CIs were 10.725; 4.227-27.211 for patients below 50 years, 28.487; 14.270-56.866 for those aged 50-60 years, and 43.183; 24.434-72.824 for those > 60 years. Combining cataract and age (reference: no cataract and age < 50 years), patients below 50 years had the highest risk of kidney failure (POR; 95% CI = 9.510; 3.722-24.297). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that age and kidney failure may jointly contribute to eye diseases, particularly cataract. The association between cataract and kidney failure could be bidirectional, especially in individuals below 50 years. This significant bidirectional relationship underscores the need for screening patients with cataract for kidney failure and vice versa, particularly in younger adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM To investigate the independent relationships of visual impairment (VI) and Subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) with physical function impairment (PFI) and the interaction effect between VI and SCC on PFI in American older adults. METHODS The data of this cross-sectional study was obtained from the 2005-2008 National Health and Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted in the United States. The VI criterion included both subjective self-reported eyesight conditions and objective visual acuity test results. The self-reported questionnaires were utilized to determine PFI and SCC. According to the survey design of NHANS, original data were weighted to produce nationally representative estimates. Both the unweighted original data and weighted estimates underwent analysis. Crude and adjusted logistic models were employed to assess the pairwise associations among VI, SCC, and PFI. To assess the interactive effect, measures such as the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP), and synergy index (S) were calculated. RESULTS A total of 2,710 subjects (weighted n = 38,966,687) aged 60 years or older were included. Compared with subjects without subjective visual impairment (SVI), those with SVI had a significant positive association with PFI [weighted OR (95%CI): 3.11 (2.25, 4.31)]. After multi-variable adjusting, the relationship remained significant [weighted OR (95%CI): 1.90 (1.32, 2.72)]. Similarly, those with objective visual impairment (OVI) were positively associated with the risk of PFI in the crude model [weighted OR (95%CI): 2.35 (1.53, 3.61)] and adjusted model [weighted OR (95%CI): 1.84 (1.07, 3.17)]. Moreover, we found the association of SCC with an increased risk of FPI [crude weighted OR (95%CI): 5.02 (3.40, 7.40); adjusted weighted OR (95%CI): 3.29 (2.01, 5.38)]. Ultimately, the additive interaction showed there was a significant positive interaction term between SVI and SCC on PFI, while OVI and SCC did not. CONCLUSION Both VI and SCC were significantly associated with PFI in elder adults. Besides, there was a significant synergistic interaction between SVI and SCC on PFI, which indicated the improvement of SVI and SCC may be beneficial for the prevention of PFI. For the elderly, especially those with multiple disabilities, comprehensive and targeted approaches are imperative to foster their overall well-being and health.

Abstract
Knowledge of public opinion is key to understanding citizens' attitudes towards environmental policies. However, large polls and surveys generate complex datasets from which it is not always easy to draw conclusions. In addition, tailor-made solutions for analysing public opinion face the challenge of handling too many layers of information, which can easily lead to an overwhelming user experience and impair decision-making. Service design methodologies can support the design of ad hoc visualisation tools focused on user needs. We present Op-e-nion, a case study of a visualisation tool for the analysis of public opinion regarding environmental issues, aimed at administrations and public institutions. The involvement of experts from different fields allowed for the identification of the main metrics necessary to target the least engaged socio-demographic groups as well as the barriers that limited their environmental actions. Experts also highlighted useful aspects of the design process and the final prototype to help them define more effective campaigns and policies to address social challenges and promote citizen action. An innovative step was introduced in the methodology by involving non-state actors in the evaluation of the tool, ensuring problem detection and enhancing the sustainability of the final product. Important aspects for the visualisation of multi-categorical data included simplifying the interaction with the tool while prioritising relevant information, and using highly customizable visualisations to answer specific user requirements and changing needs (i.e. analytical vs. managerial tasks). Improved visualisations of public opinion data will, in turn, better support the development of policies shaped by citizens' concerns.

Abstract
Foam is one of the important characteristics of beer, including foamability, foam stability and foam texture. Protein Z (PZ) is considered to be an important component of beer foam. In this study, the interaction between PZ and humulinone, a widespread compound in aged hops, and the effect on foam properties of PZ were investigated. The fluorescence spectra showed that the stoichiometric ratio of humulinone to PZ was 4.25 ± 0.48: 1, and the binding constant was (1.64 ± 0.17) × 105 M-1. MD and FTIR results showed that the main force of interaction between PZ and humulinone was hydrogen bond, and the possible sites were Asn-37, Ser-292, Lys-290 and Pro-395. Moreover, the addition of humulinone greatly reduced the surface tension of PZ solution, and changed the secondary structure of PZ, which is beneficial for the foam stability. Under the influence of humulinone, the foamability, foam stability and foam texture of PZ all increased.

Abstract
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) catalyzes the reversible CO2 hydration reaction that produces bicarbonate for phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC). This is the initial step for transmitting the CO2 signal in C4 photosynthesis. However, it remains unknown whether the maize (Zea mays L.) CA gene, ZmCA4, plays a role in the maize photosynthesis process. In our study, we found that ZmCA4 was relatively highly expressed in leaves and localized in the chloroplast and the plasma membrane of mesophyll protoplasts. Knock-out of ZmCA4 reduced CA activity, while overexpression of ZmCA4 increased rubisco activity, as well as the quantum yield and relative electron transport rate in photosystem II. Overexpression of ZmCA4 enhanced maize yield-related traits. Moreover, ZmCA4 interacted with aquaporin ZmPIP2;6 in bimolecular fluorescence complementation and co-immunoprecipitation experiments. The double-knock-out mutant for ZmPIP2;6 and ZmCA4 genes showed reductions in its growth, CA and PEPC activities, assimilation rate and photosystem activity. RNA-Seq analysis revealed that the expression of other ZmCAs, ZmPIPs, as well as CO2 signaling pathway homologous genes, and photosynthetic-related genes was all altered in the double-knock-out mutant compared with the wild type. Altogether, our study's findings point to a critical role of ZmCA4 in determining photosynthetic capacity and modulating CO2 signaling regulation via its interaction with ZmPIP2;6, thus providing insight into the potential genetic value of ZmCA4 for maize yield improvement.

Abstract
Circular RNA (circRNA) is a newly discovered endogenous non-coding RNA that plays important roles in the occurrence and development of various cancers. Current research indicates that circRNA can inhibit the function of miRNA by acting as an miRNA sponge, interacting with proteins, and being translated into proteins. Most current research focuses on the circRNA-miRNA interaction; however, few studies have investigated the interaction between circRNAs and RNA binding proteins (RBPs) in breast cancer. In this review, we systematically summarize the potential molecular mechanism of the circRNA-protein interaction in breast cancer. Specifically, we elaborate on the direct interaction between circRNAs and proteins in breast cancer, including the functions of circRNA as protein sponges, decoys, and scaffolds, thereby affecting the progression of breast cancer. We also discuss the indirect interaction between circRNAs and proteins in breast cancer in which RBPs, transcription factors and m6A modifying enzymes could in turn regulate the expression and formation of circRNA. Finally, we discuss the potential application of circRNA-protein interaction for treating breast cancer, providing a reference for further research in this field.

Abstract
Mounting evidence suggests that metal/metalloid exposure is related to the adverse health effects. Our prior investigation revealed a positive relation between the plasma level of microRNA-4286 (miR-4286) and an increased risk of developing acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, it is a lack of studies evaluating the connection between metal/metalloid exposure and miRNA expression on ACS. In the prospective Dongfeng-Tongji cohort, we performed a nested case-control study. A total of 480 ACS and 480 controls were carefully selected based on similar age, sex, and blood collection time. Using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, we assessed the plasma concentrations of 24 different metals. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to analyze the plasma miR-4286. We examined the relations of plasma metals with miR-4286 levels, the incidence of ACS, and the potential interactions. Using the multivariate conditional logistic regression models, we observed that the adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals [CI]) for incident ACS were 1.79 (1.03, 3.12; P-trend = 0.03), 0.60 (0.41, 0.87; P-trend = 0.008), and 0.66 (0.46, 0.93; P-trend = 0.02), when comparing the extreme tertiles of aluminum, rubidium, and selenium, respectively. There was a relation between the concentration of rubidium in plasma and a decrease in the level of plasma miR-4286 (percent difference [95% CI]: -13.36% [-22.74%, -2.83%]; P-trend = 0.01). Both multiplicative (P interaction = 0.009) and additive interactions (relative excess risk due to interaction [95% CI]: 0.82 [0.59, 1.06]) were noted in our observation regarding the relationship between plasma aluminum and miR-4286 in incident ACS. The findings indicated that plasma aluminum was positively while plasma rubidium and selenium were negatively linked to an increased risk of developing ACS. Plasma aluminum exposure and plasma miR-4286 expression might synergistically affect the incident ACS risk. Controlling aluminum exposure was important for ACS prevention, especially for individuals with high expression of plasma miR-4286.

Abstract
PURPOSE The involvement of clients in service encounters and service development has become a central principle for contemporary health and social care organizations. However, in day-to-day work settings, the shift toward client involvement is still in progress. We examined how health and social care professionals, together with clients and managers, co-develop their conceptions of client involvement and search for practical ways in which to implement these in organizational service processes. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH The empirical case of this study was a developmental intervention, the client involvement workshop, conducted in a Finnish municipal social and welfare center. The cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) framework was used to analyze the development of client involvement ideas and the modes of interaction during the intervention. FINDINGS Analysis of the collective discussion revealed that the conceptions of client involvement developed through two interconnected object-orientations: Enabling client involvement in service encounters and promoting client involvement in the service system. The predominant mode of interaction in the collective discussion was that of "coordination." The clients' perspective and contributions were central aspects in the turning points from coordination to cooperation; professionals crossed organizational boundaries, and together with clients, constructed a new client involvement-based object. This suggests that client participation plays an important role in the development of services. Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with dementia frequently present to the Radiology Department. However, stigmas have been recorded amongst radiographers surrounding imaging persons with dementia (PwD). This study aimed to investigate the impact of PwD attending the Radiology Department for imaging and the resultant effects to all patients, radiographers, and the Department from the perspectives of the examining radiographer. METHODS A paper-based questionnaire of radiographers' perceptions and experiences of individual examinations 'termed an interaction form' was created and made available in a public hospital in Ireland for a period of eight weeks. Radiographers completed the interaction form collecting data regarding individual imaging examinations of PwD. The form comprised sixteen closed and one open-ended question on the radiographers' individual perspectives of PwDs' abilities and distress levels, carers and comforters and their role in the examination, what the radiographer found helpful in the interaction, and any adverse events. Data were analysed using a combination of descriptive analysis and thematic content analysis. RESULTS Thirty-three interaction forms were completed by the participating radiographers. The modality most commonly represented in the survey was general X-ray (58%). Radiographers reported 84% of examinations for PwD required extra time, with 27% of examinations required repeat imaging and 69% of patients appeared distressed. A carer helped facilitate the completion of 77% of examinations. Qualitative data indicated that distractive and communicative techniques were used by radiographers to make the patient feel more comfortable and help with examination success. CONCLUSION PwD often require more time for radiological examinations, they often need repeat imaging and re-scheduling of an examination at a more appropriate time. These factors need to be considered when scheduling and performing radiological examinations. Patient distress was frequently encountered, this area may benefit from further research and dedicated practitioner training which could help drive improvements in patient experience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) cause a wide variety of bacterial infections and coinfections, showing a complex interaction that involves the production of different metabolites and metabolic changes. Temperature is a key factor for bacterial survival and virulence and within the host, bacteria could be exposed to an increment in temperature during fever development. We analyzed the previously unexplored effect of fever-like temperatures (39 °C) on S. aureus USA300 and P. aeruginosa PAO1 microaerobic mono- and co-cultures compared with 37 °C, by using RNAseq and physiological assays including in vivo experiments. RESULTS In general terms both temperature and co-culturing had a strong impact on both PA and SA with the exception of the temperature response of monocultured PA. We studied metabolic and virulence changes in both species. Altered metabolic features at 39 °C included arginine biosynthesis and the periplasmic glucose oxidation in S. aureus and P. aeruginosa monocultures respectively. When PA co-cultures were exposed at 39 °C, they upregulated ethanol oxidation-related genes along with an increment in organic acid accumulation. Regarding virulence factors, monocultured SA showed an increase in the mRNA expression of the agr operon and hld, pmsα, and pmsβ genes at 39 °C. Supported by mRNA data, we performed physiological experiments and detected and increment in hemolysis, staphyloxantin production, and a decrease in biofilm formation at 39 °C. On the side of PA monocultures, we observed an increase in extracellular lipase and protease and biofilm formation at 39 °C along with a decrease in the motility in correlation with changes observed at mRNA abundance. Additionally, we assessed host-pathogen interaction both in vitro and in vivo. S. aureus monocultured at 39οC showed a decrease in cellular invasion and an increase in IL-8-but not in IL-6-production by A549 cell line. PA also decreased its cellular invasion when monocultured at 39 °C and did not induce any change in IL-8 or IL-6 production. PA strongly increased cellular invasion when co-cultured at 37 and 39 °C. Finally, we observed increased lethality in mice intranasally inoculated with S. aureus monocultures pre-incubated at 39 °C and even higher levels when inoculated with co-cultures. The bacterial burden for P. aeruginosa was higher in liver when the mice were infected with co-cultures previously incubated at 39 °C comparing with 37 °C. CONCLUSIONS Our results highlight a relevant change in the virulence of bacterial opportunistic pathogens exposed to fever-like temperatures in presence of competitors, opening new questions related to bacteria-bacteria and host-pathogen interactions and coevolution.

Abstract
To investigate additive and interactive associations of food allergies with three glutathione S-transferase (GST) genes in relation to ASD and ASD severity in Jamaican children. Using data from 344 1:1 age- and sex-matched ASD cases and typically developing controls, we assessed additive and interactive associations of food allergies with polymorphisms in GST genes (GSTM1, GSTP1 and GSTT1) in relation to ASD by applying conditional logistic regression models, and in relation to ASD severity in ASD cases as measured by the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2nd Edition (ADOS-2) total and domains specific comparison scores (CSs) by fitting general linear models. Although food allergies and GST genes were not associated with ASD, ASD cases allergic to non-dairy food had higher mean ADOS-2 Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors (RRB) CS (8.8 vs. 8.0, P = 0.04). In addition, allergy to dairy was associated with higher mean RRB CS only among ASD cases with GSTT1 DD genotype (9.9 vs. 7.8, P < 0.01, interaction P = 0.01), and GSTP1 Val/Val genotype under a recessive genetic model (9.8 vs. 7.8, P = 0.02, interaction P = 0.06). Our findings are consistent with the role for GST genes in ASD and food allergies, though require replication in other populations.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have drawn great attention as emerging threats to aquatic ecosystems. Although the literature to study the MPs and PFASs alone has grown significantly, our knowledge of the overlap and interactions between the two contaminations is scarce due to the unawareness of it. Actually, numerous human activities can simultaneously release MPs and PFASs, and the co-sources of the two are common, meaning that they have a greater potential for interactions. The direct interaction lies in the PFASs adsorption by MPs in water with integrated mechanisms including electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, plus many influence factors. In addition, the existence and transportation of MPs and PFASs in the aquatic environment have been identified. MPs and PFASs can be ingested by aquatic organisms and cause more serious combined toxicity than exposure alone. Finally, curbing strategies of MPs and PFASs are overviewed. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can be an effective place to remove MPs from wastewater, while they are also an important point source of MPs pollution in water bodies. Although adsorption has proven to be a successful curbing method for PFASs, more technological advancements are required for field application. It is expected that this review can help revealing the unheeded relationship and interaction between MPs and PFASs in aquatic environments, thus assisting the further investigations of both MPs and PFASs as a whole.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the longitudinal association between objectively measured walking speed and hypertension and to explore the potential effect modification of obesity on this association in Chinese older adults. The data from the Chinese Health and Retirement Prospective Cohort Study (CHARLS) during 2011-2015 was used. Walking speed was assessed by measuring the participants' usual gait in a 2.5 m course, and it was divided into four groups according to the quartiles (Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4). A total of 2733 participants ≥60 years old were eligible for the analyses. After a follow-up of 4 years, 26.9% occurred hypertension. An inverse association was observed between walking speed and the risk of hypertension. There was an interaction between body mass index (BMI) and walking speed for the hypertension risk (P = 0.010). the association of walking speed with hypertension was stronger in overweight and obese participants (Q2, OR: 0.54, 95%CI = 0.34-0.85, P = 0.009; Q3, OR: 0.69, 95%CI = 0.44-1.08, P = 0.106; Q4, OR: 0.62, 95%CI = 0.39-0.98, P = 0.039). However, this association was not significant among lean ones. A similar trend was observed for systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In conclusion, higher walking speed was longitudinally associated with a lower risk of hypertension in Chinese older adults, especially among overweight and obese participants.

Abstract
During the COVID-19 pandemic, governments had to impose social isolation measures to safeguard the citizens' health. However, this could have affected psychological problems. The aim of the present study was to investigate the psychological effects associated with social and emotional isolation during the acute phase of the COVID-19 in Italy. To this purpose, the degree of social isolation and loneliness and the presence of psychological problems (externalising and internalising) were investigated online in a sample of 395 young adults (18-30 years; 57% women). Results confirmed the relevant association between social isolation, loneliness and psychological problems, in both internalising and externalising dimensions. Particularly, loneliness showed the strongest association. Moreover, consistently with surveys conducted during the COVID-19-era, data highlighted that men were more vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness than women. These results underline the need for adequate interpersonal support during moments of isolation to prevent negative effects on psychological problems.

Abstract
The use of microalgae-bacteria consortia (MBC) for wastewater treatment has garnered attention as their interactions impart greater environmental adaptability and stability compared with that obtained by only microalgae or bacteria use, thereby improving the efficiency of pollutant removal and bio-product productivity. Additionally, the value-added bio-products produced via biorefineries can improve economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability. Therefore, this review focuses on the interaction between microalgae and bacteria that leads to nutrient exchange, gene transfer and signal transduction to comprehensively understand the interaction mechanisms underlying their strong adaptability. In addition, it includes recent research in which MBC has been efficiently used to treat various wastewater. Moreover, the review summarizes the use of MBC-produced biomass in a biorefining context to produce biofuel, biomaterial, high-value bio-products and bio-fertilizer. Overall, more effort is needed to identify the symbiotic mechanism in MBC to provide a foundation for circular bio-economy and environmentally friendly development programmes.

Abstract
Benthic cyanobacterial mats (BCMs) are becoming increasingly abundant on coral reefs worldwide. High growth rates and prolific toxin production give them the potential to cause widespread coral recruitment failure through allelopathic effects, but few studies have made the link between their toxicity for coral larvae and in situ toxin concentrations. Here we investigated the allelopathic effects of the benthic cyanobacterium Anabaena sp.1 on larvae of the coral Pocillopora acuta. This cyanobacterium produces several non-ribosomal cyclic lipopeptides of the laxaphycin family with cytotoxic properties. Therefore, we measured the concentration of laxaphycins A and B in Anabaena mats and in the water column and tested their effects on coral larvae. We found that Anabaena crude extract reduces both larval survivorship and settlement and that laxaphycin B reduces settlement. When larvae were exposed to both laxaphycins, there was a reduction in both larval survival and settlement. In the natural reef environment, laxaphycin A and B concentrations increased with increasing proximity to Anabaena mats, with concentrations being consistently above LC50 and EC50 thresholds within a 1 cm distance of the mats. This study demonstrates that laxaphycins reduce the survival and inhibit the settlement of coral larvae at concentrations found near Anabaena mats in situ. It further shows a combined effect between two cyanobacterial metabolites. As BCMs become more common, more of their secondary metabolites might be released in the water column. Their occurrence will lead to a reduction in coral recruitment rates, contributing to the continuing decline of coral reefs and shift in community structure.

Abstract
The survival benefit for patients with gastric cancer (GC) is modest due to its high transfer potential. Targeted therapy for metastasis-related genes in GC may be a viable approach, however, inhibitors specifically targeting GC are limited. In this study, GC patient-derived xenografts (PDX) with metastatic burden were established via orthotopic transplantation. PCR-Array analysis of primary and metastatic tumors revealed EPH receptor B2 (EPHB2) as the most significantly upregulated gene. The interaction between the EPHB2 receptor and its cognate-specific EFNB1 ligands was high in GC and correlated with a poor prognosis. Fc-EFNB1 treatment increased the invasion and migration abilities of GC cells and induced a high EPHB2 expression. EPHB2 knockdown in GC cells completely abolished the ephrin ligand-induced effects on invasion and migration abilities. Signal transduction analysis revealed Wnt/β-catenin and FAK as downstream signaling mediators potentially inducing the EPHB2 phenotype. In conclusion, the observed deregulation of EPHB2/EFNB1 expression in GC enhances the invasive phenotype, suggesting a potential role of EPHB2/EFNB1 compound in local tumor cell invasion and the formation of metastasis.

Abstract
Widespread land development, deforestation, and wetland degradation have disrupted the physical integrity and functional capacity of ecosystems, leading to a reduction in ecosystem service values (ESV). However, comprehensive research addressing ESV interactions that represent various ecosystem services from multifaceted angles is limited. Moreover, the relative significance and spatiotemporal diversity of natural and socio-economic variables influencing ESV demand further investigation. This study conducts both quantitative and qualitative assessments of the spatiotemporal dynamics and interrelationships of ESV in the Tibet autonomous region from 2000 to 2020. Geographical detector and geographically weighted regression models are applied to ascertain the relative importance and spatial heterogeneity of diverse ESV determinants. The findings reveal the following key insights: (1) Barren lands experienced the most substantial expansion from 2000 to 2020, indicating an exacerbation of desertification in the Tibet autonomous region. (2) Over the two decades, ESV exhibited an overall upward trajectory, with regulation of water flows, water bodies, and forests making the most significant contributions to ESV and its growth. (3) The quantitative and qualitative assessment of ESV interrelations has identified the number of trade-offs and synergies, along with spatial occurrences, offering a detailed foundation for the scientific management of ecosystems. Specifically, quantitative results portray ESV correlations as positive or negative, qualitative spatial mapping elucidates intricate local interactions among ESV. (4) The primary driver of ESV in the Tibet autonomous region is NDVI (0.072), with elevation following closely behind, underscoring the predominant influence of natural factors relative to socio-economic variables. This research serves as a scientific underpinning for the development of ecological conservation policies and the execution of ecological restoration initiatives.

Abstract
Although medical information is essential for all patients, information needs and information processing capacities vary between individual patients and over time and context, within patients. Therefore, it is often recommended to "tailor" medical information to individual patients during clinic visits. However, there is a lack of consensus on what "tailoring" in clinical interactions represents since the definitions provided in the literature thus far generally regard tailoring of written text, rather than in dialogue during face-to-face interactions. To provide clinicians with guidance on how to tailor information to individual patients and to allow researchers to assess the effectiveness thereof, clarity is urgently needed regarding what "tailoring" actually means and what it entails in practice. In this paper we outline the current challenges of applying the concept of "tailoring" to the clinical setting and present existing definitions. Importantly, we introduce a new working definition of the concept that encompasses essential informational and dialogic components. We believe this provisional definition promotes much-needed conceptual precision in how communication researchers and educators define and assess tailored information provision in clinical consultations.

Abstract
Interactions between plant polyphenols and food allergens may be a new way to alleviate food allergies. The non-covalent interactions between the major allergen from peanut (Ara h 2) with procyanidin dimer (PA2) were therefore characterized using spectroscopic, thermodynamic, and molecular simulation analyses. The main interaction between the Ara h 2 and PA2 was hydrogen bonding. PA2 statically quenched the intrinsic fluorescence intensity and altered the conformation of the Ara h 2, leading to a more disordered polypeptide structure with a lower surface hydrophobicity. In addition, the in vitro allergenicity of the Ara h 2-PA2 complex was investigated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. The immunoglobulin E (IgE) binding capacity of Ara h 2, as well as the release of allergenic cytokines, decreased after interacting with PA2. When the ratio of Ara h 2-to-PA2 was 1:50, the IgE binding capacity was reduced by around 43 %. This study provides valuable insights into the non-covalent interactions between Ara h 2 and PA2, as well as the potential mechanism of action of the anti-allergic reaction caused by binding of the polyphenols to the allergens.

Abstract
Antimicrobial activity of chitosan in protein-rich media is of a particular interest for various protein-based drug delivery and other systems. For the first time, bacteriostatic activity of chitosan derivatives in the presence of caseinate sodium (CAS) was studied and discussed. Complexation of chitosan derivatives soluble in acidic (CH and RCH) or alkalescent (RCH) media with CAS was confirmed by fluorescent spectroscopy, turbodimetry, light scattering data and measurement of electrical potentials of CAS/chitosan derivative complexes. An addition of CH and RCH caused a static quenching of CAS. Binding constants Kb determined for CH/CAS and RCH/CAS complexes at pH 6.0 were equal to 29.8 × 106 M-1 and 8.9 × 106 M-1, respectively. Kb value of RCH/CAS complex at pH 7.4 was equal to 1.1 × 105'M-1. The poisoned food method was used for counting the number and the direct measurement of the size of bacterial colonies on the surfaces of turbid agar media containing CAS/chitosan derivative complexex. Complete suppression of E. coli cells growth and restriction of S. aureus cells growth were observed on the surface of acidic media. A high concentration of CAS reduced the activity. The activity of RCH in alkalescent media is low or absent. These results can be promising for preparation of microbiologically stable protein-based drug delivery systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have demonstrated that sexual minorities are at a higher risk of experiencing depressive symptoms. However, few prior investigations have examined the potential mechanisms involved. This study aimed to employ the four-way decomposition approach that integrates the analysis of mediation and interaction to investigate the potential role of problematic internet use between sexual orientation and depressive symptoms. METHODS The participants were recruited through a multi-stage, stratified cluster, and random sampling method in China. Students who identified as "gay or lesbian" and "bisexual" were defined as "sexual minorities". The Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT) was used to evaluate problematic internet use. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-20) was used to evaluate depressive symptoms. RESULTS A total of 59,859 adolescents were included in this study, with 30,180 (53.25 %) boys and 29,679 (46.75 %) girls. Of these, 7263 (12.13 %) were identified as sexual minorities. Gender differences were observed in the association between sexual orientation, problematic internet use, and depressive symptoms. The mediating effect of problematic internet use was 28.80 % for boys and 36.84 % for girls, respectively. The interaction effect between problematic internet use and sexual minority status on depressive symptoms was 21.19 % and 9.65 % for boys and girls, respectively. LIMITATIONS The current study was limited by the cross-sectional design. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that prevention and intervention programs aimed at improving mental health outcomes among sexual minority adolescents should prioritize considering the impact of problematic internet use and potential gender differences.

Abstract
The composites formed by whey protein isolate (WPI) and octenyl succinate anhydride (OSA)-modified starch were characterized with a focus on the effect of pH, and their potential in fabricating high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) as fat substitutes was evaluated. The particles obtained at pH 3.0, 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0 presented a nanosized distribution (122.04 ± 0.84 nm-163.24 ± 4.12 nm) while those prepared at pH 4.0 and 5.0 were remarkably larger. Results from the shielding agent reaction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) showed that the interaction between WPI and OSA starch was mainly hydrophobic at pH 3.0-5.0, while there was a strong electrostatic repulsion at pH 6.0-8.0. A quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) study showed that remarkably higher ΔD and lower Δf/n were observed at pH 3.0-5.0 after successive deposition of WPI and OSA starch, whereas slight changes were noted for those made at higher pH values. The WPI-OSA starch (W-O) composite-based HIPEs made at pH 3.0 and 6.0-8.0 were physically stable after long-term storage, thermal treatment, or centrifugation. Incorporation of HIPE into the biscuit formula yielded products with a desirable sensory quality.

Abstract
Telomere shortening is a biological aging hallmark. The effect of short telomere length may be targeted by increased physical activity to reduce the risk of multiple aging-related diseases, including coronary heart disease (CHD). The objective was to assess the moderation effect of accelerometer-based physical activity (aPA) on the association between shorter leukocyte telomere length (LTL) relatively in the population sample and incident CHD. Data were from the UK Biobank participants with well-calibrated accelerometer data for at least 6.5 days (n = 54,180). Relative mean LTL at baseline (5-6 years prior to aPA assessment) was measured in T/S ratio, using a multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technology, by comparing the amount of the telomere amplification product (T) to that of a single-copy gene (S). aPA measures included total number of events (at least 10-s continued physical activity > 32 milligravities [mg]), total volume, mean duration, mean intensity, and peak intensity of all events. LTL, aPA measures, and their interactions were associated with incident CHD (mean follow-up 6.8 years) using Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for covariates. Longer LTL (relative to the sample distribution) was associated with reduced incidence of CHD (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 0.94 per standard deviation [SD] increase in LTL, [95% CI, 0.90 to 0.99], P = .010). Incidence of CHD was reduced by higher total volume of aPA (aHR = 0.82 per SD increase in LTL, [95% CI, 0.71 to 0.95], P = .010) but increased by higher total number of events (aHR = 1.11 per SD increase in LTL, [95% CI, 1.02 to 1.21], P = .020) after controlling for other aPA measures and covariates. However, none of the interactions between LTL and aPA measures was statistically significant (P = .171).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess synergistic effects of reproductive factors and gene-reproductive interaction on type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk, also the extent to which the genetic risk of T2D can be affected by reproductive risk. METHODS 84,254 women with genetic data and reproductive factors were enrolled between 2006 and 2010 in the UK Biobank. The reproductive risk score (RRS) was conducted based on 17 reproductive items, and genetic risk score (GRS) was based on 149 genetic variants. RESULTS There were 2300 (2.8 %) T2D cases during an average follow-up of 4.49 years. We found a significant increase in T2D risk across RRS categories (Ptrend < 0.001). Compared with low reproductive risk, high-mediate (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 1.38, 95 % CI 1.20-1.58) and high (aHR 1.84, 95 % CI 1.54-2.19) reproductive risk could increase the risk of T2D. We further observed a significant additive interaction between reproductive risk and genetic predisposition. In the situation of high genetic predisposition, women with low reproductive risk had lower risk of T2D than those with high reproductive risk (aHR 0.47, 95 % CI 0.30-0.76), with an absolute risk reduction of 2.98 %. CONCLUSIONS Our novo developed RRS identified high reproductive risk is associated with elevated risk of women's T2D, which can be magnified by gene-reproductive interaction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The automatic generation of medical image diagnostic reports can assist doctors in reducing their workload and improving the efficiency and accuracy of diagnosis. However, among the most existing report generation models, there are problems that the weak correlation between generated words and the lack of contextual information in the report generation process. METHODS To address the above problems, we propose an Attention-Enhanced Relational Memory Network (AERMNet) model, where the relational memory module is continuously updated by the words generated in the previous time step to strengthen the correlation between words in generated medical image report. And the double LSTM with interaction module reduces the loss of context information and makes full use of feature information. Thus, more accurate disease information can be generated by AERMNet for medical image reports. RESULTS Experimental results on four medical datasets Fetal heart (FH), Ultrasound, IU X-Ray and MIMIC-CXR, show that our proposed method outperforms some of the previous models with respect to language generation metrics (Cider improving by 2.4% on FH, Bleu1 improving by 2.4% on Ultrasound, Cider improving by 16.4% on IU X-Ray, Bleu2 improving by 9.7% on MIMIC-CXR). CONCLUSIONS This work promotes the development of medical image report generation and expands the prospects of computer-aided diagnosis applications. Abstract
SpoVM and SpoIVA are essential proteins for coat assembly in Bacillus subtilis. SpoVM is a membrane curvature sensor, specifically localized on the forespore membrane. SpoIVA is an ATP hydrolase that self-assembles by hydrolyzing ATP. In this work, SpoVM and its mutant SpoVMP9A were obtained by cyanogen bromide cleavage and reconstituted into bicelles. The purification of SpoIVA was achieved through a rigorous process involving Ni-NTA chromatography column and size exclusion chromatography. This study utilized Biacore to obtain a direct determination of the kinetic parameters of interaction between SpoVM (SpoVMP9A) and SpoIVA in Bicelle conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been proven that vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) was involved in the pathogenesis of prostate cancer. Cardin et al. found that by an alanine scan, the heparin-binding site on VIP was exactly the same sequence in VIP and its receptor. Therefore, heparin could competitively block the binding of VIP and its receptor. However, the structure-activity relationship between heparin and VIP has not been reported, especially in terms of the sequence and sulfation patterns of heparin oligosaccharides upon binding to VIP. OBJECTIVE The binding process between heparin oligosaccharides and VIPA variety of experiments was designed to study the structure-activity relationship between heparin oligosaccharides and VIP. METHODS Heparin was enzymatically digested and purified to produce heparin oligosaccharides, and the structures were characterized by NMR. The binding capacity between heparin oligosaccharides and VIP was analyzed by GMSA and ITC experiments. The binding between heparin oligosaccharides and VIP was simulated using a molecular docking program to show the complex. ELISA assay was used to investigate the effect of non-anticoagulant heparin oligosaccharides on the VIP-mediated cAMP/PKA signaling pathway in vitro. RESULTS The results indicated that both the length and the sulfation pattern of heparin oligosaccharides affected its binding to VIP. VIP could induce the expression of cAMP at a higher level in PC3 cells, which could be regulated by the interaction of heparin oligosaccharides and VIP. CONCLUSION The binding between heparin oligosaccharides and VIP could block the binding between VIP and its receptor on tumor cells. Downloading the regulation of the expression level of cAMP could possibly further affect the subsequent activation of PKA. These non-anticoagulant heparin oligosaccharides may block the VIP-mediated cAMP/PKA signaling pathway and thus exert their antitumor activity.

Abstract
Temporal coordination of communicative behavior is not only located between but also within interaction partners (e.g., gaze and gestures). This intrapersonal synchrony (IaPS) is assumed to constitute interpersonal alignment. Studies show systematic variations in IaPS in individuals with autism, which may affect the degree of interpersonal temporal coordination. In the current study, we reversed the approach and mapped the measured nonverbal behavior of interactants with and without ASD from a previous study onto virtual characters to study the effects of the differential IaPS on observers (N = 68), both with and without ASD (crossed design). During a communication task with both characters, who indicated targets with gaze and delayed pointing gestures, we measured response times, gaze behavior, and post hoc impression formation. Results show that character behavior indicative of ASD resulted in overall enlarged decoding times in observers and this effect was even pronounced in observers with ASD. A classification of observer's gaze types indicated differentiated decoding strategies. Whereas non-autistic observers presented with a rather consistent eyes-focused strategy associated with efficient and fast responses, observers with ASD presented with highly variable decoding strategies. In contrast to communication efficiency, impression formation was not influenced by IaPS. The results underline the importance of timing differences in both production and perception processes during multimodal nonverbal communication in interactants with and without ASD. In essence, the current findings locate the manifestation of reduced reciprocity in autism not merely in the person, but in the interactional dynamics of dyads.

Abstract
Acanthocephalans constitute a small taxonomic group related to rotifers and specialized in a parasitic lifestyle. Anurans act as paratenic and definitive hosts and infections always occur trophically. Our objective is to describe and summarize the richness of acanthocephalans in Neotropical anurans. We conducted a literature review in the main research databases, compiling data published until August 2021. We identified 66 articles with records of acanthocephalan-anuran association, 53.03% were carried out in Brazil. We detected 108 species of anurans from 11 families parasitized by acanthocephalans. With the exception of Bufonidae, Hylidae and Leptodactylidae, which are relatively well-studied families, interaction with acanthocephalans remains largely unexplored for most anuran species. We found six families of acanthocephalans: Centrorhynchidae, Echinorhynchidae, Oligacanthorhynchidae, Cavisomidae, Neoechinorhynchidae and Plagiorhynchidae. Centrorhynchidae and Echinorhynchidae presented the largest number of taxa associated with anurans. The largest number of records corresponded to acanthocephalans in the larval stage (cystacanths), for which anurans act as paratenic hosts. We observed a lack of specific taxonomic resolution in the identifications of most reports, because a large part of the records in the larval stage make morphological identification difficult. Brazil, Mexico, Paraguay, Argentina, Ecuador and Peru are the countries with the most records, while Costa Rica, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile and Uruguay exhibited the lowest publication numbers, resulting in gaps in the distribution of acanthocephalans. We expanded the known number of anuran species parasitized by acanthocephalans, compared to the last published review. Overall, we aim to contribute to the understanding of diversity within this intriguing but understudied group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anemia and chronic kidney disease (CKD) adversely affect prognosis following acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We aimed to assess their interaction regarding long-term survival post-AMI. METHODS This is a single-center, retrospective analysis of consecutive AMI survivors. Stratified by admission-time anemia status and CKD grade, as determined by hemoglobin and creatinine levels, the cohort was evaluated for all-cause mortality at 10 years after hospital discharge. RESULTS A total of 11,395 patients (69.1% males, mean age 65.8 ± 13.9 years, 49.6% with ST elevation MI) were included, of whom 29.9% had anemia and 15.9% - grade 3b or higher CKD. CKD was more advanced among anemic patients and the prevalence of anemia rose as CKD grade increased (p for trend < 0.001). At 10 years, 47.8% of patients died. Notwithstanding differences in baseline characteristics, presentation, and treatment between those with various anemia status and CKD grades, anemia presence (HR 1.40, 95% CI 1.32-1.49, p < 0.001) and increasing CKD grade (HR 1.10, 95% CI 1.02-1.20, p for trend < 0.001) were independently associated with a higher mortality risk. The incremental hazard imposed by either anemia or more advanced CKD was limited to patients with normal renal function and up to grade 3a (in the total cohort and the conservative treatment subgroup) or 4 (in the invasive revascularization subgroup) CKD. The added risk associated with increasing CKD grade also affected non-anemic individuals irrespective of the specific CKD grade. CONCLUSION Anemia and more advanced CKD are associated with reduced long-term survival post-AMI, inflicting higher risk when conjoined in lower-grade CKD.

Abstract
Homeostatic technologies play a crucial role in maintaining the quality and extending the service life of aroma compounds (ACs). Commercial cyclodextrins (CDs) are commonly used to form inclusion complexes (ICs) with ACs to enhance their solubility, stability, and morphology. The selection of suitable CDs and ACs is of paramount importance in this process. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations provide an in-depth understanding of the interactions between ACs and CDs, aiding researchers in optimising the properties and effects of ICs. This review offers a systematic discussion of the application of MD simulations in ACs/CDs ICs, covering the establishment of the simulation process, parameter selection, model evaluation, and various application cases, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, this review summarises the major achievements and challenges of this method while identifying areas that require further exploration. These findings may contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the formation and stabilization mechanisms of ACs/CDs ICs and offer guidance for the selection and computational characterisation of CDs in the AC steady state.
