Abstract
BACKGROUND Danon disease is due to primary deficiency of lysosome-associated membrane protein-2. OBJECTIVE To define the clinicopathologic features of Danon disease. METHODS The features of 20 affected men and 18 affected women in 13 families with genetically confirmed Danon disease were reviewed. RESULTS All patients had cardiomyopathy, 18 of 20 male patients (90%) and 6 of 18 female patients (33%) had skeletal myopathy, and 14 of 20 male patients (70%) and one of 18 female patients (6%) had mental retardation. Men were affected before age 20 years whereas most affected women developed cardiomyopathy in adulthood. Muscle histology revealed basophilic vacuoles that contain acid phosphatase-positive material within membranes that lack lysosome-associated membrane protein-2. Heart transplantation is the most effective treatment for the otherwise lethal cardiomyopathy. CONCLUSIONS Danon disease is an X-linked dominant multisystem disorder affecting predominantly cardiac and skeletal muscles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate knowledge about the foreskin and circumcision, and to understand the attitudes of parents to circumcision in Korea, where circumcision in childhood is widely practised with no particular religious or medical background. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A nationwide study involving questionnaires was conducted on 5500 parents with at least one son attending elementary school. Responses were obtained from one of the parents. RESULTS The response rate was 76.1% (4183); circumcision was most common in boys when aged 11 years, followed by neonatal circumcision. Of the parents, 91.3% believed that circumcision is necessary, while 2.1% believed it to be unnecessary. The principal reasons given for circumcision were 'to improve penile hygiene' (82.4%), followed by 'to improve future sexual potency' (7.5%). Among those who did not believe circumcision to be necessary, the most common reason was the expectation of spontaneous retraction of the prepuce with age (55.1%). Most (88.4%) of the parents believed that smegma is not a clean material, and is infected by microorganisms. Most parents (80.6%) thought that circumcision would prevent genital tract infection of the future spouse. Peer pressure was one of the most influential factors in deciding upon circumcision; 41.9% of the parents were anxious that their child might be ridiculed by his peer group unless he was circumcised, while 27.4% of the parents believed that their child might be ridiculed if he was circumcised. Mothers were more positive about circumcision than fathers (P < 0.05). Parents with a higher education and higher socio-economic status were also more positive about circumcision (P < 0.05). Mothers were prone to emphasize improved sexual potency (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in response between urban and rural areas. CONCLUSION This study indicates that common beliefs held by parents about the prepuce or circumcision differ significantly from current medical knowledge, and these beliefs have a major influence on the practice of circumcision in Korea. More clinical research on the natural history of the foreskin is needed, and it is critical that both children and parents are informed about the potential benefits and disadvantages of circumcision.

Abstract
Expression patterns of phospholipase D1 (PLD1) in the developing rat retina were investigated using immunocytochemistry and Western blot analysis and compared with the expression patterns of glutamine synthetase. PLD1 immunoreactivity appeared first in a few neuroblasts in the middle of the mantle zone of the primitive retina by embryonic (E) day 13. PLD1-immunoreactive primitive ganglion cells were characterized in the ganglion cell layer by E17. Faint immunoreactivity at E17 profiled radially orientated cells and this pattern appeared up to postnatal (P) day 7. In the ganglion cell layer at P3, displaced amacrine cells and ganglion cells were classified. At P5, presumptive horizontal cells and amacrine cells were identified. By P7, a thin outermost layer of newly formed segments of the photoreceptor cells was also PLD1 immunoreactive. PLD1 immunoreactivity at P8 was limited to radial Müller cells and the outer segment layer of the photoreceptor cells, and the expression pattern was conserved to adulthood. Western blot analysis showed relatively high amounts of PLD1 protein at E17 and P3, a decrease at P7, and moderate amounts from P8 onward. Co-expression of PLD1 with glutamine synthetase in the retina appeared first after birth in differentiating neurons and in Müller cells by P8; thereafter the pattern was maintained. The expression pattern of the PLD1 during development of the retina suggests that PLD1 plays important roles in glutamate-associated differentiation of both specific neurons and radial glial cells, and in glutamate-mediated cellular signalling in Müller cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is a difficult problem to manage refluxing distal ureteral stumps after an upper tract approach in the ectopic ureter and ureterocele. We evaluated the natural history of the remaining refluxing distal ureteral stumps through a close follow-up. PATIENTS AND METHODS From 1991 to 1998, nine patients with the ectopic ureter or ureterocele, whose age ranged from one to 20 (median 5.0) months, had undergone an upper tract surgery for ectopic ureter (2) or ectopic ureterocele (7). The upper tract surgery for ureterocele or ectopic ureter included a total nephrectomy (2), a partial nephrectomy (6) or a proximal ureteroureterostomy (1), leaving distal ureteral stump. We evaluated the clinical results of the remaining ureteral stumps every 6 or 12 months. The postoperative follow-up period was 51 (median; range 21-96) months. RESULTS Among the 9 patients, 5 showed disappearance of the reflux and a markedly reduced stump size in the follow-up study. Improvement was noted in 4 patients within 6 months and in 1 by 20 months postoperatively. Two patients subsequently underwent a bladder level surgery due to problems not associated with the ureteral stump itself. Two patients have been followed up for 30 and 39 months, but without any improvement. An intermittent asymptomatic bacteriuria was noted in all patients during the follow-up, but no patient suffered from symptomatic urinary tract infection requiring an additional surgery. CONCLUSIONS Since refluxing distal ureteral stumps were spontaneously resolved in more than half of the cases and did not cause significant problems during the follow-up, it is not necessary to remove the refluxing ureter simultaneously at the time of the upper tract surgery.

Abstract
This study was undertaken in order to prepare 188Re labelled ethylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(methylene phosphonic acid) (EDTMP), and to determine its potential as a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical for the palliation of metastatic bone pain. The effects of pH, incubation methods, and concentrations of stannous chloride, EDTMP, and ammonium perrhenate as a carrier on radiochemical yield and stability were evaluated. Biodistribution studies were performed in male Wistar rats after intravenous injection of 188Re-EDTMP and compared with those of hydroxyethylidene diphosphonate (HEDP). Greater than 95% radiochemical yield of 188Re-EDTMP was obtained under the optimal conditions (0.1 mmol x ml(-1) of EDTMP, 0.5 mg x ml(-1) of stannous chloride, and pH 1.0). Heating the reaction mixture (boiling water for 15 min, and microwave heating for 15 s) and the addition of ammonium perrhenate increased the radiochemical stability (>90% at 3 h, and >80% at 48 h). The biodistribution of 188Re-EDTMP showed high bony uptake and rapid clearance from other organs, and high bone-to-soft tissue ratios, which are similar to 188Re-HEDP. In conclusion, 188Re-EDTMP was prepared with high radiochemical yield and stability, and showed favourable biological characteristics. Microwave heating was a convenient and rapid method for the preparation of 188Re-EDTMP. It is considered that 188Re-EDTMP is a potential therapeutic agent for bone metastasis.

Abstract
Sodium nitroprusside (SNP), an NO donor, was studied for its effects on apoptosis in rat retinal neurons. TUNEL-positive cells were observed in the outer nuclear layer (ONL), but not in the inner retina after SNP treatment. Inner retinal neurons died by necrosis. No photoreceptor cells were found in the ONL after seven days. Immunoblotting confirmed that neurnal NO synthase expression increased up to 5 days (approximately 170% of control levels), and then declined by 7 days, suggesting that NO induces apoptosis in the ONL, and that inner retinal neurons die by necrosis due to glutamate from damaged photoreceptors.

Abstract
We investigated the morphology and synaptic connections of neuropeptide Y (NPY)-containing neurons in the guinea pig retina by immunocytochemistry, using antisera against NPY. Specific NPY immunoreactivity was localized to a population of wide-field and regularly spaced amacrine cells with processes ramifying mainly in stratum 1 of the inner plexiform layer (IPL). Double-label immunohistochemistry demonstrated that all NPY-immunoreactive cells possessed glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 immunoreactivity. The synaptic connectivity of NPY-immunoreactive amacrine cells was identified in the IPL by electron microscopy. The NPY-labeled amacrine cell processes received synaptic input from other amacrine cell processes and bipolar cell axon terminals in stratum 1 of the IPL. The most frequent postsynaptic targets of NPY-immunoreactive amacrine cells were other amacrine cell processes. Synaptic outputs to bipolar cells were also observed in a small number of cases. This finding suggests that NPY-containing amacrine cells may influence inner retinal circuitry in stratum 1 of the IPL, thus mediating visual processing.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of a chitooligosaccharide mixture (MW 2000-30000 Da) with a deacetylation degree of 91.5% against two representative oral pathogens, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Streptococcus mutans. A 0.1% concentration of the chitooligosaccharides (derived from the exoskeletons of marine crustaceans) was used to estimate antibacterial activity. Approximately 2 logcolony forming units (CFU)/ml of A. actinomycetemcomitans were inactivated by 0.1% chitosan after 30 min, while 120 min exposure inactivated about 4.5 logCFU/ml of this organism. In contrast, the level of inactivation against S. mutans was less than 0.5 logCFU/ml after an exposure of up to 120 min. Electron microscopy showed that the exposure of A. actinomycetemcomitans to the chitooligosaccharides resulted in the disruption of cell membranes and that it could be considered for the treatment of periodontal diseases associated with A. actinomycetemcomitans.

Abstract
We report a biopsy-proven case of neurolymphomatosis (NL) presenting with sensory motor axonal polyneuropathy, polymyositis, and cerebral involvement. Ours is the second reported case of NL caused by natural killer-cell lymphoma defined by morphology and immunophenotyping. For 3 months, the patient developed stocking-glove distribution of hypesthesia, subacute progressive weakness and mental deterioration. EMG showed severe sensorimotor mixed axonal-demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy. Lumbar puncture revealed mildly high protein level with normal glucose and cell count. Sural nerve biopsy demonstrated lymphomatous axonal neuropathy and muscle biopsy was indicative of lymphomatous polymyositis. Brain MRI revealed multiple white matter lesions, consistent either with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy or cerebral lymphoma. Bone marrow biopsy showed neoplastic infiltrates. The patient died of multiple organ failure prior to initiation of chemotherapy.

Abstract
Multicenter Study on the Prevalence of Perennial Allergic Rhinitis and Allergy-Associated Disorders This study was aimed to determine the prevalence of perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR) using the skin test, radioallergosorbent test (RAST), or multiple allergosorbent test (MAST) and to clarify the clinical aspects of the patients diagnosed as having PAR by the questionnaire survey and rhinologic examination. The 71,120 subjects who had visited the 23 otolaryngology clinics at the randomly selected tertiary referral hospitals in Korea between November 1, 1999 and April 30, 2000 were studied. PAR was diagnosed when subjects complained of two or more associated symptoms and the skin test, RAST, or MAST using perennial inhalant allergens was positive. The questionnaire survey and rhinologic examination were performed in subjects with PAR. The prevalence of PAR was 3.93%. We could find no significant difference in the prevalence of PAR between the two sexes. However, there was a significant difference in the prevalence of PAR between the child and adult groups. The chief complaints were, in order of decreasing frequency, nasal obstruction, watery rhinorrhea, and sneezing. There was a family history of PAR in 40.2% of the subjects. The 39.6% of the subjects had associated allergic diseases, being atopic dermatitis most common. In conclusion, the prevalence of PAR in tertiary referral hospitals in Korea is 3.93%. Many subjects with PAR have family history and appear to be associated with other allergic diseases.

Abstract
We investigated the morphological changes of horizontal cells after postnatal photoreceptor degeneration in the developing FVB/N mouse retina, using immunocytochemistry with anti-calbindin D-28K. From postnatal day 14 (P14) onwards, processes emerging from horizontal cells descend into the inner plexiform layer (IPL) and ramify mainly in stratum 1 of the IPL. Electron microscopy revealed that the descending processes make synaptic contacts with bipolar cells in the outer plexiform layer. Our results clearly demonstrate that loss of photoreceptor cells induces the reorganization of horizontal cell processes in the retinas of FVB/N mice as they mature.

Abstract
We investigated the expression and cellular localization of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the rat retina, following ischemic injury induced by transient increase of intraocular pressure. In the normal retina, nNOS immunoreactivity was localized to certain populations of amacrine cells, displaced amacrine cells and a few bipolar cells. Following transient ischemia, retinal neurons expressing the immunoreactivity increased and peaked three days after reperfusion. Quantitative evaluation using immunoblotting confirmed that nNOS expression showed a peak value (500% of control levels) at 3 days, and then decreased again to 150% of controls by 4 weeks after reperfusion. Our findings suggest that this over-produced NO may act as a neurotoxic agent in the ischemic rat retina.

Abstract
We evaluated the efficacy of beta-radiation therapy ((188)Re-MAG(3)) to inhibit intimal hyperplasia (IH) in diffuse in-stent restenosis by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) analysis in 50 patients. Nine patients who did not agree with radiation therapy, and therefore underwent rotational atherectomy and balloon angioplasty for diffuse in-stent restenosis in the same study period, were selected for control groups. Serial IVUS comparisons were available in 44 of 50 patients with radiation therapy and 7 of 9 control patients. At 6-month follow-up, there was less significant increase of IH area in patients with radiation therapy than in control patients (Delta IH area = 0.1 +/- 0.8 mm(2) vs. 2.6 +/- 1.8 mm(2), P > 0.001 in mean values, and 0.6 +/- 1.4 mm(2) vs. 2.9 +/- 2.1 mm(2), P = 0.026 in values of follow-up lesion site, respectively). In conclusion, beta-radiation therapy might be an effective treatment modality to inhibit intimal hyperplasia in patients with diffuse in-stent restenosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE The dual-specificity phosphatase PTEN/ MMAC1/TEP1 has recently been identified as the tumor suppressor gene most frequently mutated and/or deleted in human tumors. However, PTEN mutations have rarely been detected in sporadic thyroid cancers. Therefore, this study investigated the PTEN expression of thyroid cancer and the relationship between PTEN, clinical status and other biologic factors such as HER-2/neu and p53. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study samples consisted of 62 thyroid cancer specimens and 24 benign thyroid tumor specimens from patients who were operated on the Department of Surgery, Uijongbu St. Mary's hospital during the 5 years from January 1995 until January 2000. All tumors were studied by immunohistochemical staining using monoclonal antibodies against PTEN, HER-2/neu and p53. The results were analyzed statistically. RESULTS PTEN protein was found to be under-expressed more frequently in thyroid cancers (29%) than in benign thyroid tumors (4.2%). The reduction in PTEN expression in thyroid cancers was not significantly related with the recorded clinical factors such as size, age, lymph node metastasis and p53, except for HER-2 which was found to be significantly related (p=0.001). HER-2 over- expression was noted in thyroid cancer (83.8%) more frequently than in benign tumors (16.7%). CONCLUSION This study has demonstrated that the under-expression of PTEN protein and the over-expression of HER-2 protein may play a role in the carcinogenesis and development of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was done to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of beta-radiation therapy with a rhenium-188-mercaptoacetyltriglycine ((188)Re-MAG(3))-filled balloon after rotational atherectomy for diffuse in-stent restenosis (ISR). BACKGROUND Rotational atherectomy has been shown to be safe and efficient for the treatment of ISR, but the recurrence rate is still high. Intracoronary beta-irradiation after rotational atherectomy may be a reasonable approach to prevent recurrent ISR. METHODS Fifty consecutive patients with diffuse ISR (length >10 mm) in native coronary arteries underwent rotational atherectomy and adjunctive balloon angioplasty, followed by beta-irradiation using a (188)Re-MAG(3)-filled balloon catheter. The radiation dose was 15 Gy at a depth of 1.0 mm into the vessel wall. RESULTS The mean lengths of the lesion and irradiated segment were 25.6 +/- 12.7 mm and 37.6 +/- 11.2 mm, respectively. Radiation was delivered successfully to all patients, with a mean irradiation time of 201.8 +/- 61.7 s. No adverse event, including myocardial infarction, death or stent thrombosis, occurred during the follow-up period (mean 10.3 +/- 3.7 months), and nontarget vessel revascularization was needed in one patient. The six-month binary angiographic restenosis rate was 10.4%, and the loss index was 0.17 +/- 0.31. CONCLUSIONS Beta-irradiation using a (188)Re-MAG(3)-filled balloon after rotational atherectomy is safe and feasible in patients with diffuse ISR, and it may improve their clinical and angiographic outcomes. Further prospective, randomized trials are warranted to evaluate the synergistic effect of debulking and irradiation in patients with diffuse ISR.

Abstract
Using immunoblot analysis and immunocytochemistry, we investigated expression and cellular localization of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in the l-arginine treated ischemic rat retina. In parallel, we tested whether the blood-retinal barrier was intact by immunocytochemistry using an antiserum against IgG. In the l-arginine-treated ischemic retina, the magnitude of the increased eNOS was higher, and PCNA was expressed in endothelial cells as well as in neurons in the inner retina during the whole experimental period. Finally, IgG leakage was not detectable in the l-arginine-treated ischemic retina. Our results clearly suggest that the increased NO production by eNOS may be essential for the survival of endothelial cells in the rat retina following transient ischemia.

Abstract
The serotonin (5-HT) receptor system has 14 different subtypes classified by pharmacology and function. Many ligands are widely used for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes in some severe human diseases. Most of the ligands that are specific for each 5-HT receptor have distinctive chemical structures with regard to pharmacophore elements including 4-arylpiperazine, benzimidazole, benzamide, chroman, aminopyridazine, tetralin, and polycycles. However, their affinity and selectivity for 5-HT, dopamine and alpha1 receptors depend on their substituents and linker spacers. 5-HT transporter inhibitors have also been developed as potential antidepressants. In contrast to classical tricyclic compounds, newly developed secondary amine derivatives such as paroxetine and tetralin show high binding affinity and selectivity. Radioisotope-labeled ligands have also been developed, including [carbonyl-(11)C]WAY 100635 for 5-HT1A receptor, [(11C) or (18)F]ketanserine derivatives for 5-HT(2) receptor, [(125)I]DAIZAC for 5-HT(3) receptor, and [123I]IDAM for 5-HT transporter, and these are accumulated in brain regions that are rich in the respective receptors. This review summarizes the recent development of 5-HT receptor- and transporter-specific ligands and their pharmacological properties on the basis of their chemical structures.

Abstract
Continuous visibility monitoring has been carried out in Kwangju, Korea since May 1999. The total light extinction coefficient bext measured by a transmissometer and reveals seasonal trends in urban visual air quality, especially under hazy conditions with a visual range of less than 15 km. Seasonal atmospheric visibility under low relative humidity during the winter was observed to be better than during any other seasons. Summertime visibility was severely degraded due to highly increased light scattering by hygroscopic particles under high humidity atmospheric conditions. Visibility during spring and fall was also moderate. However, yellow sand in spring caused the lowest visibility conditions over the measurement area for a few days. With continuous monitoring using the transmissometer, the daily average seasonal visual range was measured to be 13.1, 9.2, 11.0, and 13.9 km in spring, summer, fall and winter, respectively. Under the atmospheric humidity condition less than 60%, visual range was observed to be 16.1, 13.9, 15.1, and 16.6 km in spring, summer, fall, and winter, respectively. The mean light extinction budget by sulfate and nitrate aerosols was determined to be the highest value of 63.71% during the summer and the lowest value of 27.08% during spring. During the 'yellow sand dust' period, a mean light extinction budget by soil particles was estimated to be at an unusually high value of 44.22%.

Abstract
Phospholipase D (PLD) is one of the intracellular signal transduction enzymes and plays an important role in a variety of cellular functions. We investigated the expression and cellular localization of the PLD isozyme PLD1 in the rodent retina. Western blot analysis showed the presence of PLD1 at the protein level in the rat, mouse and guinea pig retinas. PLD1 immunoreactivity was localized in all Müller cells. Thus, PLD1 protein appears to be important in the functions of these cells in the rodent retina.

Abstract
PURPOSE It is unclear whether supranormal differential renal function of the hydronephrotic kidney is real or artifactual. We investigated the effect of clinical and renographic parameters on differential renal function. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 34 males and 10 females from 1 to 9 months old (median age 2.6 months) with unilateral congenital hydronephrosis. A 99mtechnetium (Tc) mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3) scan was performed, and regions of interest were drawn on the kidneys, and perirenal and lateral backgrounds. Differential renal function was calculated with and without background subtraction at 30-second intervals from 0.5 to 3 minutes after injection of 99mTc-MAG3. The effects of age, sex, obstruction, site and size of the hydronephrotic kidney were analyzed using the generalized estimating equations method. RESULTS There were 11 right and 33 left hydronephrotic kidneys. An obstructive renographic pattern was present in 33 cases. The trends of differential renal function according to intervals were different between kidneys with and without background subtraction, and differential renal function increased significantly as size increased (p <0.05). Differential renal function of the hydronephrotic kidney with an obstructive renographic pattern increased with time when perirenal or no background subtraction was applied (p <0.05). The effects of age, sex or laterality on differential renal function were not significant. Supranormal function (differential renal function 55% or greater) was present regardless of background subtraction methods and measurement time. CONCLUSIONS Differential renal function is higher in larger hydronephrotic kidney but function of the kidney with an obstructive pattern is overestimated on later phases of 99mTc-MAG3 renal scan. Supranormal differential renal function is real and may be pathologic since it is prone to occur in larger obstructive hydronephrotic kidneys.

Abstract
Near-nerve needle sensory nerve conduction of plantar nerves in 100 patients with distal sensory neuropathy with normal routine nerve conduction (DSN-NNC) found the definite neuropathy pattern (abnormality in more than three of six tested nerves) in 65%, axonal neuropathy in 35%, and the known cause in 37% of patients. Absent or diminished reflexes were a reliable indicator for large fiber neuropathy (LFN). This near-nerve needle plantar nerve study provides useful and unequivocal evidence of its value in identifying neuropathy in DSN-NNC by finding LFN in 65% of patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE We investigated the effect of local anesthetic agents on the detrusor muscle in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS In vitro isometric contraction of rat detrusor strips was measured. We investigated the effects of tetracaine, bupivacaine and lidocaine on baseline spontaneous contractions and contractions induced by various stimuli, including 60 mM. KCl, carbachol and electricalal field stimulation with a pulse duration of 0.8 or 100 milliseconds. RESULTS Local anesthetic agents have complex effects on baseline spontaneous contractility that depend on the type of agent used and its concentration. These agents inhibited nerve mediated contraction resulting from electricalal field stimulation with a pulse duration of 0.8 milliseconds in a concentration dependent manner and also inhibited nonnerve mediated detrusor contractions induced by KCl, carbachol or electricalal field stimulation with a pulse duration of 100 milliseconds Higher concentrations of local anesthetic agents were needed to inhibit nonnerve than nerve mediated contractions. In rat detrusor muscle carbachol induced a sustained tonic contraction even after the depletion of internal and external Ca2+ sources, which was also inhibited by local anesthetic agents. CONCLUSIONS These results show that local anesthetic agents have a wide spectrum of inhibitory effects on the contraction of bladder smooth muscle induced by various stimulants at different concentrations, which may be potentially useful for treating overactive bladder.

Abstract
We investigated a simple and reliable method for the preparation of 99Tcm-dimercaptosuccinic acid (99Tcm(V)-DMSA) without the addition of oxygen. The effect of pH, amount of reducing agent, and oxygen addition in the synthesis of 99Tcm(V)-DMSA were evaluated. At pH 9, we obtained a radiochemical yield of 95% +/- 1.2% within 10 min and a high stability until 7 h, with 92% +/- 1.5% radiochemical purity. However, at a pH lower than 9, the radiochemical yield was below 90% within 10 min, and a longer reaction time was needed to obtain a radiochemical yield above 90%. The addition of oxygen did not have an additional effect on the radiochemical yield or its stability at pH 9, whereas it increased the radiochemical yield of 99Tcm-(V)-DMSA at pH 7. It was noted that the smaller the amount of reducing agent used, the higher was the radiochemical yield obtained at pH 7. However, at pH 9, the radiochemical yield was not dependent on the amount of reducing agent. In conclusion, the synthesis of 99Tcm(V)-DMSA was more dependent on the pH of the reaction mixture than on the amount of reducing agent or the addition of oxygen. The adjustment of pH 9 was the easiest and most effective method for the synthesis of 99Tcm(V)-DMSA using a commercial kit for 99Tcm(III)-DMSA.
