Abstract
The upper and lower limits of the excitation function of the (63)Cu(n,p)(63)Ni reaction were experimentally determined, and the number of (63)Ni nuclei produced in copper samples exposed to atomic bomb neutrons in Hiroshima was estimated by using the experimental excitation functions and the neutron fluences given in the DS02 dosimetry system. The estimated number of (63)Ni nuclei was compared with that measured and with that calculated using the DS02 dosimetry system and the corresponding ENDF/B-VI cross section. In comparison with DS02, there is about a 60% maximum difference in (63)Ni production at the hypocenter when the experimental upper cross section values are used. The difference becomes smaller at greater distances from the hypocenter and decreases, for example, to less than 30 and 5% when using the upper and lower experimental cross sections at 1,000 m, respectively.

Abstract
A case of large ameloblastoma of the mandible with severe hypoproteinemia is reported. The patient, a 53-year-old man, had a large swelling (14 x 11 x 10 cm) from the right cheek to the submandible causing severe hypoproteinemia. The tumor was removed when the serum protein level had recovered to 5.3g/dl following administration of 50 ml of 20% albumin for 4 days. After the operation, his hypoproteinemia, which was thought to be caused by leakage of plasma through the oral fistula of the ameloblastoma, rapidly improved. This article describes preoperative and postoperative findings and the clinical course of the patient.

Abstract
Nasolabial cysts are rare non-odontogenic cysts that occur beneath the ala nasi, and debate about their complicated, unique pathogenesis continues. It is widely accepted that these lesions originate from the anlage of the nasolacrimal duct; however, some still think that nasolabial cysts arise from fissural cysts. The authors report a patient with a nasolabial cyst who also had a unilateral cleft lip and palate. This unusual finding may indicate a different origin for nasolabial cysts than what has been accepted in the past.

Abstract
The excitation function for the (63)Cu(n,p)(63)Ni reaction has been measured by activation method using the 4.5 MV Dynamitron accelerator of the Fast Neutron Laboratory of Tohoku University. Copper plates and hollow spherical copper shells were irradiated by neutrons of various energy up to 14.9 MeV produced by the T(p,n), D(d,n), and T(d,n) reactions. The (63)Ni produced in the irradiated copper target was chemically separated. The beta-rays emitted from the extracted (63)Ni were measured by a liquid scintillation method. The cross sections obtained were compared with the evaluated data files of JENDL-3.3, ENDF/B-VI and FENDL/A-2.0. Consequently, it is found that FENDL/A-2.0 is consistent with our experimental data in the energy range studied in this work. The effect of proton shell appeared in the excitation function obtained is also discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A growing number of studies demonstrate the utility of (18)fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in the management of malignant lymphoma. The results of FDG-PET, however, have not been studied extensively for T-cell and natural killer (NK)-cell neoplasms. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively evaluated pretreatment FDG-PET scans in 41 patients with T/NK-cell neoplasms diagnosed according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification. Histological subtypes frequently included were peripheral T-cell lymphoma, unspecified (PTCLu, n = 11), extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKL, n = 8), primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (C-ALCL, n = 5), and angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AILT, n = 4). RESULTS FDG-PET detected a lymphoma lesion in at least one site in 36 out of 41 patients. The positive rate was equally high in most histological subtypes except for cutaneous lymphomas: PTCLu 91%, ENKL 100%, C-ALCL 60%, AILT 100%. All the patients without an FDG-avid lesion had lesions restricted to skin. Among patients who had cutaneous lesions, only 50% had FDG-avid cutaneous lesions, all of which were tumorous. The positive rate of FDG-PET for bone marrow involvement was only 20%. CONCLUSION T/NK-cell neoplasms incorporated in this study were generally FDG-avid except for cutaneous lesions and bone marrow involvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Late-onset neutropenia (LON) has been reported following rituximab-containing chemotherapy. Its incidence and risk factors, however, have not been extensively studied. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 107 patients treated with rituximab-containing chemotherapy as a primary treatment of CD20-positive B-cell lymphomas and identified cases with LON as defined by the neutrophil count of <or=1.0 x 10(9)/l without an apparent cause after the recovery of neutrophil count following completion of the intended chemotherapy. RESULTS With a median follow-up of 411 days, 23 patients developed LON out of the 107 at a median of 106 days after the last chemotherapy. Cumulative incidence of LON among the total patients was 24.9%. The median neutrophil count nadir was 0.61 x 10(9)/l. The LON episodes were generally self-limited, and filgrastim was administered in one patient. Including this patient, there were no serious infectious episodes in the cases with LON. In multivariate analysis, intensive chemotherapy regimens including high-dose therapy followed by autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT) and high-dose methotrexate-containing regimens without ASCT were a risk factor for LON. CONCLUSION This study suggests that LON is a frequent complication of rituximab-containing intensive chemotherapy.

Abstract
To investigate clinicopathological features of pyothorax-associated lymphoma (PAL), we examined medical records of 98 patients (88 males and 10 females) with PAL at a median age of 70 years (range 51-86). Seventy-nine patients had a history of artificial pneumothorax. Median interval between diagnosis and artificial pneumothorax was 43 years (range 19-64). At diagnosis, performance status (PS) was 0-1 (n=56) and 2-4 (n=42). Clinical stages were I (n=42), II (n=26), III (n=8) and IV (n=22). Pathological diagnosis comprised diffuse large-B-cell (n=78) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma (n=1). Seventeen were treated supportively. The other 81 received aggressive treatments; chemotherapy (n=52), radiotherapy (n=7), surgery (n=4) and combination (n=18). Five-year overall survival (OS) was 0.35 (95% confidence interval, 24% to 45%). Causes of deaths were PAL (n=39), respiratory failure (n=13) and others (n=12). Multivariate analysis identified prognostic factors for OS; lactate dehydrogenase levels [hazard ratio (HR)=2.36; P=0.013], sex (female versus male) (HR=0.15; P=0.01), PS (2-4 versus 0-1) (HR=2.20; P=0.02), clinical stages (III/IV versus I/II) (HR=1.95; P=0.037) and chemotherapy (HR=0.31; P=0.01). Most patients with PAL are elderly and have comorbidities, while some of them achieve durable remission with appropriate treatments. These findings prompt us to establish an optimal treatment strategy on the basis of risk stratification of individual patients.

Abstract
In the course of Sabin-inactivated poliovirus vaccine (S-IPV) development, we have established high-yield virus production techniques based on Vero cell micro-carrier cultures. Development of specific ELISA tests to quantify the antigen content of S-IPV has been achieved. To adjust the immunogenicity of S-IPV so as to be comparable with the conventional-IPV, a new formulation was determined using a potency test using rats. The reformulated S-IPV was shown to be efficacious for the immunization of monkeys.

Abstract
The efficacy of the selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor meloxicam for treatment of postoperative oral surgical pain was assessed in a randomized controlled trial. Patients undergoing unilateral mandibular 3rd molar extraction surgery were allocated to 3 groups, A, B and C. After oral premedication of meloxicam 10 mg in group A, ampiroxicam 27 mg in group B and placebo in group C, surgery was completed within 30 min under local anaesthesia using 2% lidocaine. For postoperative pain relief the patients were allowed to take oral loxoprofen (60 mg per tablet). Postoperative pain was evaluated at the clinic on the 1st, 7th and 14th postoperative day (POD) using a visual analogue scale (VAS), as was the number of loxoprofen tablets consumed, and the results were compared among the 3 groups with statistical significance of P<0.05. VAS scores on 1 POD were significantly lower in group A than in group C. Loxoprofen consumption on the day of surgery and 1 POD was significantly lower in group A than in group C (P<0.01). Total analgesic consumption was significantly lower in groups A and B than in group C (P<0.02). The COX-2 inhibitor, meloxicam 10 mg used for premedication reduced postoperative pain compared with control in oral surgery.

Abstract
Resistance to cisplatin is a major impediment to the successful treatment of ovarian cancer, but the precise nature of the resistance is still unclear. In the current study, we aimed to investigate and compare the protein expression profiles in cisplatin-sensitive and cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer cell lines. We employed the recent development of surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization ProteinChip technology to measure protein expression in three human ovarian cancer cell lines (KF-1, MN-1, and A2780) and their sublines (KF-r, MN-r, and A2780cp) resistant to cisplatin. The ProteinChip Arrays were analyzed using the ProteinChip Reader. We did not find any regularity in protein expressions in secretions of cisplatin-sensitive and cisplatin-resistant cells. But on the IMAC3 array, we captured 12 identical expressions which represent a subset of proteins whose expression levels are different between parent ovarian cancer cells and their cisplatin-resistant cells. In particular, at the molecular weight of 7829 d, three kinds of parent cell lines exhibited an elevated expression and their cisplatin-resistant sublines revealed a lowered expression. At the molecular weight of 6881 d, for KF and MN cell lines, opposite protein expressions were seen in the parent cell line and its cisplatin-resistant subline. We think the interesting protein expressions perhaps suggest some mechanisms involved in cisplatin resistance.

Abstract
Chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity studies of ammonium sulfate, used as a food additive in fermentation, were performed in male and female Fisher 344 rats at dietary concentrations of 0%, 0.1%, 0.6% and 3.0% in a 52-week toxicity study and 0%, 1.5% and 3.0% in a 104-week carcinogenicity study. Treatment with ammonium sulfate caused significant increase in kidney and/or liver weights in males and females of the 3.0% diet group, but no effects were found on survival rate, body weights, and hematological, serum biochemical or histopathological parameters at any dose levels in the chronic toxicity study. Regarding carcinogenicity, ammonium sulfate did not exert any significant influence on the incidences of tumors in any of the organs and tissues examined. It was concluded that the no observed adverse effect level of ammonium sulfate was the 0.6% diet, which is equivalent to 256 and 284 mg/kg b.w./day in males and females, respectively, and the compound is non-carcinogenic under the conditions of the study.

Abstract
The inferior colliculus (IC) is a major processing center in the ascending auditory pathway. The role of the IC in the descending efferent auditory system is less clear. Although the IC central nucleus (ICC) is the major relay station for the ascending auditory pathways, the IC's cortex receives its main input from the neocortex and nonauditory sources. The goal of this study was to determine if the IC subdivisions had different functions in the descending efferent auditory system. IC subdivisions were identified by their tuning curves evoked by tone stimulation, and the effects of localized electrical stimulation on the cochlear whole-nerve action potential (CAP). Sharp tuning curves were obtained from ICC in contrast to broad tuning curves from the lateral, external cortex. Electrical stimulation within the central nucleus had a sharply tuned effect on the CAP. The frequency region affected within the cochlea closely matched the best frequency of local cells within the central nucleus. The effect of electrical stimulation within the lateral, external cortex on the CAP was smaller in comparison to central nucleus stimulation. Similar to the broad tuning of cells within the lateral cortex, electrical stimulation had a broad frequency effect on CAP thresholds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Crohn's colitis, frequently accompanied by stenosis or narrowing, can be difficult to assess through conventional methods. We evaluated the usefulness of virtual computed tomographic colonography (CTC) for the detection of colonic lesions due to Crohn's disease. METHODS Forty-two lesions in 33 patients with Crohn's disease were examined by CTC and barium enema (BE). Twenty-two patients also were examined by colonoscopy (CS). The visualization ability of CTC was compared with those of the other two methods. RESULTS In the visualization of elevated lesions, there was no significant difference between CTC and BE (18 of 20, p = 0.487) or between CTC and CS (15 of 16, p = 0.99); however, ulcerative lesions were less often visualized by CTC. However, CTC enabled identification of serious lesions in the colon proximal to the stenosis in nine patients and was superior to BE and CS in terms of its ability to visualize the proximal site of the stenosis (p = 0.003). CONCLUSION CTC is clinically useful for the evaluation of Crohn's colitis, especially those with stenotic lesions.

Abstract
The metabolism of orally administered dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) by male and female golden Syrian hamsters was examined by quantification of DHEA and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) in gallbladder bile, urine and feces using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Plasma levels of DHEA and DHEAS were also determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA). After 5 days of oral DHEA administration (100 mg/kg body weight twice a day), RIA showed that plasma levels of DHEA and DHEAS were increased approximately 3-6 and 4-5 times, respectively, compared to controls. More than 95 % of circulating DHEA (S) in the peripheral blood was DHEAS. There was no significant sex difference in DHEAS plasma levels between male and female animals in the DHEA-supplemented group. However, 0.2 - 0.3 % of ingested DHEA was conjugated to DHEAS and excreted in urine by females, whereas less than 0.002 % was excreted in urine by males (p < 0.005). DHEAS was excreted in bile by males after DHEA supplementation, and the sex differences in DHEAS levels observed in bile were statistically significant (male, 18.7 +/- 7.5 vs. female, 5.6 +/- 3.1 micromol/l) (p < 0.005). Small amounts of ingested DHEA were excreted in an unchanged state in feces, and no sex difference was observed. These results suggest that there is a considerable sex difference in the conjugation and excretion of orally administered DHEA in the hamster.

Abstract
A 32-year-old woman with Von Recklinghausen's disease had a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor that had progressed to malignancy from a neurofibroma arising in the left phrenic nerve. The tumor was removed combining a neck incision and thoracotomy. It should be more widely recognized that neurofibroma associated with Von Recklinghausen's disease may progress to malignancy. Primary treatment requires a broad surgical excision to obtain an adequate margin.

Abstract
The competitive exclusion (CE) action of Aviguard (AG) and its effects on the antibody response of chicks were evaluated in this study. We observed that AG protected the chicks from overwhelming colonization. Fourteen days after infection, fewer AG-pretreated than nonpretreated chicks shed salmonellae from their coloaca in both infected groups, although much less from SE-infected chicks. Antibody titers of sera produced to Salmonella typhimurium (ST) and SE in pretreated and non-pretreated chicks were not significantly different. Immunoblotting showed that these antibodies reacted with SDS-PAGE-separated 71.4, 67.7, 44.0, and 30.3 kDa proteins detectable in the test strains. Few weak bands of doubtful significance were observed in the cross-reaction between the sera of ST- and SE-infected chicks with ST and SE antigens, respectively. Our study showed that AG protected chicks from overwhelming colonization by salmonellae, and neither altered the antigenic proteins of infecting salmonellae nor their recognition by specific antibodies produced in response to the infection.

Abstract
The rats treated with a single i.p. injection of diethylnitrosoamine (DEN) and percial hepatectomy were fed for 11 weeks with a high fat diet mixed with 10% lard, eicosapentaenoic-acid-rich oil (EPA-oil) or arachidonic-acid-rich oil (AA-oil) and the emergence of glutathione S-transferase placental form (GST-P) in the liver was evaluated. There were no significant differences in the serum aminotransferase activities. The molar ratio of n-6 and n-3 fatty acid in the liver phospholipids was significantly low in the EPA-oil group compared with the other groups. In the EPA-oil group, the area percent and the unit area of GST-P positive foci were significantly smaller than the other groups. In the AA-oil group, no significant differences were recognized in the quantitative values for GST-P positive foci compared with the control and lard groups. In conclusion, a hepatic neoplasmic lesion induced by DEN was suppressed with EPA-rich fish oil, and arachidonic-acid-rich oil showed no effect of suppression or acceleration.

Abstract
To produce a safe and effective inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV), we have developed S-IPV using Vero cells infected with the Sabin strains in a semi-production scale. All production steps including virus culture on microcarrier beads were highly reproducible. Mean recovery percents of infectious viruses or D-antigens during all processes for concentration, purification and inactivation were 30-50% in the three types. The S-IPV potency was adjusted for D-antigen content as determined by in-house ELISA and was comparable to WHO reference IPV derived from the virulent strains in immunogenicity tests in rats. Antibody development in more than 30 seronegative infant volunteers after two shots of S-IPV at four-week interval were 100% without notable adverse reactions. The mean antibody titres (log2) to Sabin 1, 2 and 3 viruses were 11.1, 8.3 and 8.9, respectively. The antibodies neutralized the Mahoney, MEF-1, and Saukett virulent strains with slightly inferior titres to those of the Sabin strains. D-antigens for each type of S-IPV were stable at 4 degrees C without any significant decrease over more than two years.

Abstract
During a 27-year period 1,839 patients with lung cancer were treated at Kanazawa University Hospital. Of these 1,839 patients, 25 (1.3%) were classified as bilateral multiple lung cancers by Martini's criteria. They consisted of 14 synchronous carcinomas and 11 metachronous carcinomas. For the patients with synchronous carcinomas, 5 underwent bilateral operation, and 5 underwent ipsilateral operation and contralateral combination therapy (Nd:YAG, irradiation or chemotherapy). Four did not undergo operation. While for the patients with metachronous carcinomas, 9 underwent operation for bilateral lesions, 2 were treated by radiotherapy for the second primary lung cancer. When a pulmonary resection for bilateral multiple lung cancers is required, radicality and the need to preserve residual respiratory function and cardiac function (FEV1.0 more than 500 ml/DSA, performance status) must be considered in making the decision to operation. The 5-year survival rate was 67%, 41%, and 33% in cases treated by operation for bilateral lesions, ipsilateral operation and contralateral combination therapy, and non-surgical therapy. Multidisciplinary treatment based on surgical resection contributed to good prognosis of bilateral multiple lung cancers. A long-term detailed follow-up is necessary to detect second lung carcinoma after the first operation as soon as possible.

Abstract
HMGIC, a high-mobility-group protein gene encoding an architectural transcription factor, was recently identified as the target of gene fusion in a variety of human benign mesenchymal tumors; some of these events were chromosomal translocations involving 12q13-15. HMGIC consists of three DNA-binding domains (encoded by exons 1-3), a spacer, and an acidic carboxyl-terminal regulatory domain (exons 4-5). To determine the spectrum and nature of the aberrations in uterine myomas in Japanese patients, we systematically examined the tumors of 45 patients for all possible types of gene fusions involving HMGIC, by means of 3'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) experiments. HMGIC gene fusions were found in 16 (36%) of the tumors; aberrant splicings to five cryptic sequences located in introns of the HMGIC gene were found in 11 of these cases, and translocations causing juxtaposition to other genes, such as COX6C and RA D51B, were found in 5. In all fusion transcripts, the first two or three exons of HMGIC were fused to ectopic sequences. Our results suggest that a fusion event, resulting in the separation of the DNA-binding domains of HMGIC from the spacer and the acidic carboxyl-terminal regulatory domain, is a common tumorigenic mechanism in the development of uterine myomas.

Abstract
Of ten members of the aquaporin family (AQP), the mRNA expression and regulation of AQP1, AQP3, AQP4 and AQP9 in cultured human keratinocytes were examined by an RNase protection assay. AQP3 mRNA was expressed in growing and differentiating cells, while AQP9 mRNA was only detected in differentiating cells. The epidermis in skin-equivalent cultures expressed both AQP3 and AQP9 mRNA. However, neither AQP1 nor AQP4 mRNA was detectable in either monolayer or skin-equivalent cultures. Incubation of keratinocytes in sorbitol-added hypertonic medium increased AQP3 mRNA expression. This was confirmed using other solutes such as NaCl, mannitol, glucose and sucrose. The effect of sorbitol was reversible, dose-dependent and maximal at 24 h after addition. However, AQP1, AQP4 and AQP9 mRNA expression were unchanged under any of the hypertonic conditions examined. These findings indicated that osmotic stress up-regulates AQP3 gene expression in cultured keratinocytes.

Abstract
A 68-year old diabetic man with gingival cancer of the lower jaw underwent resection of the mandible and functional neck dissection. Swabs of a postoperative wound infection revealed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The wound was irrigated, and antibiotics administered. The pathogens isolated were sensitive to the antibiotics used, but the infection failed to respond to treatment. Bleeding ensued on the 14th postoperative day (#14POD), when the wound was opened to reveal thrombosis and rupture of the right internal jugular vein. The patient's condition improved after ligation and surgical debridement of the right internal jugular vein. Our experience underlines the importance of early radiological investigation for possible thrombus formation in the internal jugular vein in cases of postoperative wound infection follows functional neck dissection with conservation of the internal jugular vein. It is also important to actively treat this condition surgically, including ligation of internal jugular vein for suppressing inflammation.

Abstract
A rare case of acinic cell carcinoma of the sublingual gland accompanied by bone formation is reported. The patient is a 79-year-old male who was referred to Yokohama Minami Kyosai Hospital with sublingual swelling. A tumor mass, 20 x 10 mm in diameter, was detected on the right side of the floor of the mouth. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a mass lesion with calcification in the sublingual gland. The patient underwent total sialadenectomy of the sublingual gland with conservation of the lingual nerve. Histologically, the lesion showed amylase-positive atypical cells with thyroid gland-like arrangement, and mature bone tissue in the stroma. Based on these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as acinic cell carcinoma accompanied by bone formation. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, and two years after surgery, there are no signs of distant metastases or recurrence.

Abstract
We have developed a method to overcome sequencing problems caused by the presence of homopolymer stretches, such as polyA/T, in cDNA libraries. PolyA tails are shortened by cleaving before cDNA cloning with type IIS restriction enzymes, such as GsuI, placed next to the oligo-dT used to prime the polyA tails of mRNAs. We constructed four rice Cap-Trapper-selected, full-length normalized cDNA libraries, of which the average residual polyA tail was 4 bases or shorter in most of the clones analyzed Because of the removal of homopolymeric stretches, libraries prepared with this method can be used for direct sequencing and transcriptional sequencing without the slippage observed for libraries prepared with currently available methods, thus improving sequencing accuracy, operations, and throughput.

Abstract
We report the first case of granulomatous tubulointerstitial nephritis induced by all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) in a patient with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). Acute renal failure during treatment with ATRA has been previously reported as a part of an ATRA syndrome or a thrombotic complication of a hypercoagulable state. This case indicates an alternative mechanism of acute renal failure occurring during ATRA therapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Radiation pneumonitis (RP) is one of the most serious complications for patients who receive thoracic irradiation. To avoid this, early diagnosis of radiation pneumonitis is extremely important. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether serum pulmonary surfactant proteins A and D (SP-A and SP-D, respectively) could be useful markers for RP. METHODS AND MATERIALS Eighty-six patients (lung cancer: 42 [primary: 39, metastatic: 3], breast cancer: 23, esophageal cancer: 21) who underwent radiation therapy were prospectively studied. Radiation doses ranged from 30-76 Gy (median, 58 Gy). Serum SP-A and SP-D levels were evaluated sequentially by a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method before, during, and throughout the follow-up period until the development of symptomatic RP or until one year after completion of radiotherapy. Specificity of the ELISA results was confirmed by Western blot analysis. Patients symptomatic for RP were graded according to the Common Toxicity Criteria. RESULTS RP occurred in 19 patients. Serum SP-D levels of patients with RP were sequentially higher than those in patients without RP. In the monitoring, serum SP-D levels at 50-60 Gy showed greater sensitivity and positive predictive values for RP detection (74% and 68%, respectively) than SP-A (26% and 21%, respectively). Western blot analysis showed that the development of RP was due to overproduction, but not proteolysis of surfactant proteins. CONCLUSION We confirm that serum SP-A and SP-D monitoring is a practical and useful diagnostic method for the early detection of RP.

Abstract
Geotrichum sp. FO347-2 could use refined sardine oil as a sole carbon source. Dry cell mass reached a maximum of 0.788 g per g of the oil added for 72 h. Total weight of the cellular lipids was largest around 24 h, when the contents of triglyceride and free fatty acid were 63.6 and 22.2%, respectively. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was incorporated and concentrated in the cellular lipids, and the content reached 25.9% for 24 h, adding sardine oil containing 12.3% DHA. DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid were also concentrated in residual lipids outside the cells. Using tuna head oil containing 26.8% DHA, FO347-2 was compared with Candida guilliermondii FO726A with respect to DHA incorporation. FO347-2 and FO726A accumulated similar amounts of DHA, i.e. 53 and 55 mg, respectively, in 1 g of freeze-dried cells after 24-h cultivation at 30 degrees C. The recovery rates of DHA from the tuna oil for FO347-2 and FO726A were 19.4 and 19.7%, respectively.

Abstract
The effects of insulin sensitivity and lipid metabolism of dietary lard, eicosapentaenoic acid-rich oil (EPA oil) or arachidonic acid oil (AA oil) in Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats were examined. Blood glucose was not different in each group at 30, 60, 120 min on an oral glucose tolerance test. Fasting blood glucose levels were lower in lard and AA oil groups than in controls. Hepatic triglyceride concentration and liver histochemistry revealed that the fat content was higher in the lard group and the AA oil group than in controls. The EPA oil group showed TG levels as high as the control group. Serum total cholesterol in the EPA oil group was lower, while the level in the AA oil group was higher than in the lard and control groups. HDL cholesterol was 1.5-fold higher in the AA oil group than in controls. Dietary EPA oil or AA oil supplementation showed different effects on lipid metabolism in this model.

Abstract
To confirm the safety of oral poliomyelitis vaccine (OPV) cultured in Vero cells, the genetic stability of cultured polio vaccine viruses was analysed by MAPREC (mutant analysis by PCR and restriction enzyme cleavage). The rates of mutant accumulation of the viruses passaged in Vero cells under a low multiplicity of infection (MOI) condition (approximately 10(-3.5)CCID50/cell; the same as under usual OPV production conditions) were higher than those passaged in secondary cultured monkey kidney cells. However, the rates of mutant accumulation were restrained when the viruses were cultured under a high MOI condition (approximately 10(-1.5)CCID50/cell) in Vero cells. Furthermore, neurovirulence of the passaged viruses in pollovirus susceptible transgenic mice PVR-Tg21 was shown to correlate highly with the results of MAPREC. It is expected that our results will contribute to the large scale preparation of safe and effective OPV using Vero cells.
