Abstract
Objective: To study the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) activity in the pathological process of liver injury in acute liver failure (ALF) mice. Methods: ALF model was established by intraperitoneal injection of D-galactosamine/lipopolysaccharide (D-GalN/LPS) in C57BL/6 mice. The mice were divided into control group (n=10), ALF model group (n=18), 4-phenylbutyrate (4-PBA, an ER stress inhibitor) group (n=18) and SB216763 (a specific inhibitor of GSK3β) group (n=16). The serum alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) levels were measured to reflect the liver function, liver injury was assessed by observing pathological changes of liver tissue, the levels of proteins in liver tissue were analyzed by Western blotting, the activity of GSK3β in liver tissue was detected using GSK3β activity assay kit, and the survival rate of hepatocyte was measured by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay. Results: In in vivo experiment, the expression levels of ER stress markers, glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein homologous protein (CHOP), were upregulated during the progression of D-GalN/LPS-induced ALF, indicating activation of severe ER stress and increased activity of GSK3β. Compared with the model group, inhibition of ER stress by 4-PBA improved liver function[ALT: (365.4±58.6) U/L vs (1 094.5±201.5) U/L, P<0.05; AST: (555.1±60.8) U/L vs (1 444.3±533.7) U/L, P<0.05)and pathological injury, also decreased the activity of GSK3β (2.6±0.3 vs 4.6±1.3, P<0.05). Inhibition of GSK3β activity was shown to alleviate liver injury in ALF by reducing the expression levels of GRP78 and CHOP. The in vitro experiment of tunicamycin-induced hepatocyte apoptosis showed that inhibition of GSK3β activity increased the cell survival rate. Conclusion: In ALF induced by D-GalN/LPS, severe ER stress may accelerate the development and progress of ALF by upregulating the activity of GSK3β.

Abstract
Ocular drug delivery by conventional routes of administration cannot reach or maintain therapeutic drug concentrations in the target tissues for a long duration due to the presence of various anatomical and physiological barriers. Treatment of chronic ocular diseases especially posterior segment of ocular diseases requires novel drug delivery systems that is capable overcome these barriers for efficacious delivery. In recent years, the ocular sustained-release drug delivery system, as a new drug delivery approach, has drawn tremendous attention for its advantages of improving local drug concentration, prolonging action time and reducing frequency of injection. Researchers have been devoted to the developing more effective sustained-release drug delivery systems in order to achieve better clinical efficacy. This article discusses various current sustained-release corticosteroids delivery systems. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2018, 54: 154-160).

Abstract
Nanocrystalline (NC) materials have fascinating physical and chemical properties, thereby they exhibit great prospects in academic and industrial fields. Highly efficient approaches for fabricating bulk NC materials have been pursued extensively over past decades. However, the instability of nanograin, which is sensitive to processing parameters (such as temperature and time), is always a challenging issue to be solved and remains to date. Herein, we report an ultrafast nanostructuring strategy, namely ultrasonic vibration consolidation (UVC). The strategy utilizes internal friction heat, generated from mutually rubbing between Ti-based metallic glass powders, to heat the glassy alloy rapidly through its supercooled liquid regime, and accelerated viscous flow bonds the powders together. Consequently, bulk NC-Ti alloy with grain size ranging from 10 to 70 nm and nearly full density is consolidated in 2 seconds. The novel consolidation approach proposed here offers a general and highly efficient pathway for manufacturing bulk nanomaterials.

Abstract
Venous thromboembolism had drawn great attention of global experts, as it is the third leading cause of cardiovascular-associated death, ranking after coronary heart disease and stroke. Numerous health care organizations had introduced guidelines for thromboprophylaxis during the perioperative period in their own fields. The paper reviewed the available guidelines pertaining to urological surgery from America Urological Association, American College of Chest Physicians and European Association of Urology. Compared with the first two guidelines, the European Association of Urology guideline is a milestone which recommended the most detailed prophylactic measures for the procedure-specific and patient-specific according to the evidence-based medicine. Meanwhile, there was still no reliable evidence in fields of the effect of new oral anticoagulants in urology, needing further study. Although they were similar in patient management and prophylaxis principles, there are still some differences in risk factors, assessments, and recommendations of prophylactic measures. In this context, we planed to summarize the highlights and compare the differences of three guidelines addressing the use of thromboprophylaxis in urology, in order to provide reference for Chinese urologists to select the best prevention strategies for patients in the perioperative period.

Abstract
Biodegradable magnesium-calcium (MgCa) alloy is a very attractive orthopedic biomaterial compared to permanent metallic alloys. However, the critical issue is that MgCa alloy corrodes too fast in the human organism. Compared to dry cutting, the synergistic dry cutting-finish burnishing can significantly improve corrosion performance of MgCa0.8 (wt%) alloy by producing a superior surface integrity including good surface finish, high compressive hook-shaped residual stress profile, extended strain hardening in subsurface, and little change of grain size. A FEA model was developed to understand the plastic deformation of MgCa materials during burnishing process. The measured polarization curves, surface micrographs, and element distributions of the corroded surfaces by burnishing show an increasing and uniform corrosion resistance to simulated body fluid.

Abstract
Tumor molecular profiling is a fundamental component of precision oncology, enabling the identification of genomic alterations in genes and pathways that can be targeted therapeutically. The existence of recurrent targetable alterations across distinct histologically defined tumor types, coupled with an expanding portfolio of molecularly targeted therapies, demands flexible and comprehensive approaches to profile clinically relevant genes across the full spectrum of cancers. We established a large-scale, prospective clinical sequencing initiative using a comprehensive assay, MSK-IMPACT, through which we have compiled tumor and matched normal sequence data from a unique cohort of more than 10,000 patients with advanced cancer and available pathological and clinical annotations. Using these data, we identified clinically relevant somatic mutations, novel noncoding alterations, and mutational signatures that were shared by common and rare tumor types. Patients were enrolled on genomically matched clinical trials at a rate of 11%. To enable discovery of novel biomarkers and deeper investigation into rare alterations and tumor types, all results are publicly accessible.

Abstract
The defining problem in frustrated quantum magnetism, the ground state of the nearest-neighbor S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice, has defied all theoretical and numerical methods employed to date. We apply the formalism of tensor-network states, specifically the method of projected entangled simplex states, which combines infinite system size with a correct accounting for multipartite entanglement. By studying the ground-state energy, the finite magnetic order appearing at finite tensor bond dimensions, and the effects of a next-nearest-neighbor coupling, we demonstrate that the ground state is a gapless spin liquid. We discuss the comparison with other numerical studies and the physical interpretation of this result.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate clinicopathological features of carcinoma showing thymus-like elements (CASTLE) in the head and neck regions. Methods: Clinicopathological data of 7 patients with CASTLE in the head and neck regions were retrospectively reviewed.Immunohistochemical staining and in situ hybridization for EBER were performed. BRAF(V600E) mutation was examined by ARMS method in 6 cases. Results: There were 5 females and 2 males with age between 49 and 78 years (average of 65.6 years). All tumors were solitary nodular lesions with an infiltrative border, including 6 intrathyroid tumors and 1 extrathyroid tumor in the laryngeal pharynx. The tumors were 1.7-4.1 cm in diameter (average of 3.0 cm). Four cases demonstrated lymph node metastasis. All patients were alive without metastasis during follow-up, except one consultation case (with FNA sample) developed recurrence at the primary site. The cases showed different immunoreaction to CD5, diffuse immunoreaction with p63, CK5/6 and CD117, but negative staining for TTF1, TG and calcitonin. One case showed positive immunoreaction with Synin less than 30% tumor cells. The Ki-67 labeling index was between 3% and 90%. No BRAF(V600E) mutation and EB virus infection were detected. Conclusions: Extrathyroid CASTLE involving laryngeal pharynx shows the similar morphological and immunohistochemical features with intrathyroid CASTLE.Immunohistochemical markers of CD5 and CD117 are helpful in the diagnosis. Ki-67 labeling index can be high in CASTLE, especially in lymphoepithelioma type. CD5-negative CASTLE may have neuroendocrine differentiation. BRAF(V600E) mutation and EB virus may not be involved in the carcinogenesis of CASTLE.

Abstract
Trichomes are derived from the epidermis and constitute an ideal system for studying cell division in plants. Here, a Chinese cabbage doubled haploid (DH) line (FT) without trichomes was crossed with another DH line (PurDH-1) with trichomes to develop an F2 population for fine mapping of trichome control genes. Genetic analysis showed that the trichome phenotype was controlled by a single dominant gene, Brtri1. Using 1226 glabrous individuals in the F2 segregation population, Brtri1 was localized to a 16.84 kb region between markers Pur6-31 and Pur6-39 on chromosome A06. One of the four complete open reading frames within the mapping region, Bra025311, encodes a MYB transcription factor and is highly homologous to the trichome regulatory gene GL1 in Arabidopsis thaliana. It was thus regarded as a candidate gene for Brtri1. Comparative sequencing showed a 5-bp deletion in the third exon of Bra025311 in FT, resulting in a frame-shift mutation. No expression of Bra025311 was detected in FT. A co-dominant indel marker close to this mutation site was developed for marker-assisted selection in Chinese cabbage breeding.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate clinicopathologic characteristics, immunophenotype and EB virus-related molecular genetic alterations in primary central nervous system diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) along with correlation with clinical prognosis. Methods: A total of 30 cases of primary central nervous system DLBCL were retrospectively studied by retrieving clinical data, histological evaluation and immunophenotyping by EnVision two steps methods. The expression of EBER mRNA was detected by in situ hybridization and bcl-2, bcl-6 and C-MYC gene abnormalities were analyzed by interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization. Results: The cases included 18 males and 12 females (sex ratio of 1.5∶1.0) with an age ranging from 24 to 78 years (average age of 52 years, the median age of 53 years). The single primary clinical presentation was focal neurologic deficits. Tumor locations were supratentorial (21 cases), subtentorial (7 cases), involving both locations in 2 cases. Diffuse growth pattern was observed with large lymphoid cells mostly resembling centroblasts with abundant basophilic cytoplasm with oval to round, vesicular nuclei containing fine chromatin. An angiocentric and angiodestructive growth pattern was also present. Other features included perivascular space invasion. Immunohistochemical staining using a panel of CD10, bcl-6 and MUM1, six cases were germinal center-like (GCB) and 24 cases were non-germinal central-like (non-GCB). The positive rates of bcl-2, bcl-6 and C-MYC were 53.3% (16/30), 80.0% (24/30) and 20.0% (6/30), respectively. Genetic alterations were detected by FISH and the gene arrangement rates of bcl-2, bcl-6 and C-MYC were 3.3% (1/30), 16.7% (5/30) and 3.3% (1/30), respectively. There were 19 cases in stage 0-1 disease and 11 cases had stage 2-3 disease. Postoperative follow-up for average 13.6 months showed the median survival of 10 months, one-year survival of 46.7% and 16 patients died within a year. Conclusions: The clinical prognosis of primary central nerve system DLBCL depends on age, clinical performence status score, IPI score, immune classification and treatment. Patients typically progress rapidly with the high mortality within one year of diagnosis. Surgical resection combined with high-dose methotrexate or cytarabine chemotherapy offer the best treatment option.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of combined administration of autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine/bafilomycin A1 and EGFR inhibitor gefitinib on triple-negative breast cancer MDA-MB-468, MDA-MB-231 cells and estrogen receptor-positive MCF-7 cells. METHODS All the cells were treated with 3-methyladenine/bafilomycin A1 and/or gefitinib. The effect of autophagy inhibitor and gefitinib on the cell growth was evaluated by MTT assay. Cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. Western blot analysis was used to determine the alteration of autophagy-related protein (such as LC3) and apoptosis-related proteins (such as caspase-3 and caspase-9). RESULTS MTT assay showed that the IC50 in the GE+ 3-MA and GE+ BAF groups were (4.1±0.2) μmol/L and (3.8±0.3) μmol/L, significantly lower than that of the gefitinib alone group [(7.0±0.2) μmol/L] in MDA-MB-468 cells (P<0.05). Similarly, the IC50 in the GE+ 3-MA and GE+ BAF groups were (9.7±0.1) μmol/L and (7.7±0.2) μmol/L, significantly lower than that of the gefitinib alone group [(14.7±0.1) μmol/L]in MDA-MB231 cells (P<0.05). The flow cytometry assay revealed that the apoptosis rates of MDA-MB-468 cells in GE, GE+ 3-MA and GE+ BAF groups were (12.43±3.18)%, (23.37±2.71)% and (18.71±2.81)%, respectively. The apoptosis rates of MDA-MB-231 cells of the GE, GE+ 3-MA and GE+ BAF groups were (12.15±1.82)%, (16.94±2.19)% and (33.83±5.92) %, significantly higher than that of the gefitinib alone group (All P<0.05). The apoptosis rates of the MCF-7 cells were not changed significantly among the three groups (P>0.05). Western blot data showed that the expression levels of LC3 and p-Akt were decreased in the combined groups than that of the gefitinib alone group, while the p-PTEN, caspase-3 and caspase-9 were increased. CONCLUSIONS Autophagy inhibitor may enhance the sensitivity to gefitinib in MDA-MB-468 and MDA-MB-231 cells by activation of the PTEN/P13K/Akt pathway. Apoptosis in MDA-MB-468 and MDA-MB-231 cells might be enhanced by the combination treatment through caspase cascade.

Abstract
NPRA and NPRC are candidate susceptibility genes for essential hypertension (EH) and play a key role in the regulation of plasma levels and biological effects of natriuretic peptides. The aims of the present study were to find new genetic markers in the NPRA and NPRC genes and to assess relationships between variants and EH. A total of 797 unrelated Mongolian herdsmen were enrolled, including 389 EH patients and 408 normotensive controls. Genotyping was performed using the polymerase chain reaction/ligase detection reaction assay. The distribution of the T-allele frequency of rs1847018 in NPRC differed significantly between hypertensive subjects and controls. There was an association between rs1847018 and EH in the additive model in NPRC (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the genotype and allele frequency distributions for any of the 3 single nucleotide polymorphisms in NPRA between EH and normotensive individuals. In NPRA, the frequency of haplotype TCA in the EH group was significantly lower than in controls, while the frequency of haplotype TCG was significantly higher in the EH group than in controls; Individuals who possessed the TCA haplotype had a significantly lower risk of EH, whereas the presence of haplotype TCG was significantly associated with a higher risk of EH. However, there was no significant difference between the EH group and controls in any of the 8 haplotypes in NPRC. Rs1847018 is a genetic marker of EH in NPRC, and the frequency of haplotype TCA and TCG in NPRA is associated with EH in the Mongolian population.

Abstract
Genetic variants of the RGS5 gene are believed to be risk factors for hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we investigated the association between RGS5 gene variants and hypertension in the Mongolian and Han populations. Peripheral blood was obtained from 429 unrelated Mongolian herdsmen and 416 Han farmers [including essential hypertension (EH) patients and controls]. Nine tagSNPs within the RGS5 genes were retrieved from HapMap, and the samples were individually genotyped using the polymerase chain reaction/ligase detection reaction assay. The distribution of the allele frequency of rs12035879 differed significantly between hypertensive subjects and controls in the Han population, while the distribution of the allele and genotype frequencies of rs16849802 differed significantly between hypertensive subjects and controls in the Mongolian population. We observed an association between rs16849802 and EH in the Mongolian population. The frequency of haplotype GAA was significantly higher in the EH group than in controls in the Mongolian population. However, the EH group and controls did not differ significantly in all 6 haplotypes in the Han population. The rs16849802 and haplotype GAA independently increased the risk of EH in Mongolian patients, and may be used as a risk factor for the prediction of high blood pressure.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different levels of flavones of sea buckthorn fruits (FSBF) on growth performance, carcass quality, fat deposition, and lipometabolism for broilers. 240 one-day-old Arbor Acres male broilers were randomly allotted to 4 dietary treatments (0, 0.05%, 0.10%, and 0.15% FSBF) with 6 replicates of 10 birds. Broilers were reared for 42 d. Results showed FSBF quadratically improved average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), and final body weight (BW) (P = 0.002, P = 0.019 and P = 0.018, respectively). The abdominal fat percentage in 0.05%, 0.10%, and 0.15% FSBF supplementation groups was decreased by 21.08%, 19.12%, and 19.61% with respect to the control group, respectively (P < 0.05). The intramuscular fat (IMF) content in the breast muscle of the broilers was increased by 7.21%, 23.42% and 6.30% in 0.05%, 0.10% and 0.15% FSBF groups, and that in the thigh meat was raised by 4.43%, 24.63% and 12.32%, compared with the control group, respectively (P < 0.05). FSBF had a quadratic effect on the abdominal fat percentage and IMF in the breast muscle (P < 0.05). Dietary FSBF also modified fatty acids of muscular tissues, resulting in a higher ratio of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids (P < 0.05). Supplementing FSBF in the diet greatly decreased the levels of triglyceride, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P < 0.05). Moreover, the quadratic responses were also observed in the levels of insulin and adiponectin in serum (P = 0.020 and P = 0.037, respectively). Abdominal fat percentage was correlated negatively with insulin and positively with adiponectin (P < 0.05). IMF content in the breast and thigh muscles were correlated positively with insulin, and negatively with adiponectin (P < 0.05). A positive correlation existed between breast muscle, IMF, and leptin (P < 0.05). In conclusion, adding FSBF into the diets affected growth performance and fat deposition of broilers by regulating lipometabolism. Fat deposition and distribution of broilers were closely associated with concentrations of insulin and adiponectin. The optimal level of FSBF supplemented in diet was 0.05 to 0.10% in this study.

Abstract
This study was performed to investigate the correlation between stereotyped behavior of the blue fox and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the DRD1 gene. We choose the DRD1 gene as a major gene for investigating the correlation of gene polymorphism and self-biting disease by means of direct sequencing. Part of the DRD1 gene exon of the blue fox was cloned; the length of the whole sequence was 864 bp. Four SNPs were detected and analyzed by the chi-square analysis; the results showed that the gene polymorphism of T206C in the DRD1 gene had a significant correlation with self-biting (P < 0.01). Therefore, marker-assistant selection on self-biting of blue foxes using these SNPs can be applied to select healthy individuals.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to determine the digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) content of 19 rice bran samples and to develop prediction equations for DE and ME based on their chemical composition. The 19 rice bran samples came from different rice varieties, processing methods and regions. The basal diet was formulated using corn and soybean meal (74.43% corn and 22.91% soybean meal and 2.66% vitamins and minerals). The 19 experimental diets based on a mixture of corn, soybean meal and 29.2% of each source of rice bran, respectively. In Exp. 1, 108 growing barrows (32.1±4.2 kg) were allotted to 1 of 18 treatments according to a completely randomized design with 6 pigs per treatment. The treatment 1 was the control group which was fed with basal diet. The treatments 2 to 18 were fed with experimental diets. In Exp. 2, two additional rice bran samples were measured to verify the prediction equations developed in Exp. 1. A control diet and two rice bran diets were fed to 18 growing barrows (34.6±3.5 kg). The control and experimental diets formulations were the same as diets in Exp. 1. The results showed that the DE ranged from 14.48 to 16.85 (mean 15.84) MJ/kg of dry matter while the ME ranged from 12.49 to 15.84 (mean 14.31) MJ/kg of dry matter. The predicted values of DE and ME of the two additional samples in Exp. 2 were very close to the measured values.

Abstract
To improve embryogenesis in microspore cultures of kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC.), 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA), naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), arabinogalactan (AG), p-chlorophenoxyisobutyric acid (PCIB), and activated charcoal (AC) were added to the medium using four varieties of kale. The results showed that the addition of AG (0.1-0.2 g/L), AC (0.1-0.2 g/L) or a combination of 6-BA (0.1-0.2 mg/L) and NAA (0.1-0.2 mg/L) promoted embryo-genesis. Adding 40 μM PCIB or a combination of 40 μM PCIB and 0.2 g/L AC to NLN-13 medium at pH 5.8 effectively enhanced embryogenesis. Treatment with a combination of 40 μM PCIB and 10 mg/L AG gave the highest rate of embryonic induction, especially in genotype "Y007," which showed a twelve-fold increase in yield.

Abstract
In order to describe grasshopper (Orthoptera: Acrididae) species composition, diversity, abundance, and density of four rangelands types, we compared the grasshopper community composition and dynamics in the rangeland of the northern slopes of the Qilian Mountains. In total, 55 grasshopper species were collected from 2007 to 2009, representing three families and six subfamilies. The subfamily Oedipodinae was dominant, followed by Gomphocerinae and Catantopinae. Species abundance varied among rangeland types (RTs). The greatest abundance of grasshoppers was found in mountain rangeland, while the lowest abundance of grasshoppers was caught in alpine shrublands. Three species (Chorthippus cf. brunneus (Thunberg) (Acrididae), Chorthippus Dubius (Zubovski), and Gomphocerus licenti (Chang) were broadly distributed in the four RTs and constituted 7.5% of all grasshoppers collected. Ch. dubius was very abundant in desert rangeland and alpine shrubland. Bryodema dolichoptera Yin et Feng Eremippus qilianshanensis Lian and Zheng, and Filchnerella qilianshanensis Xi and Zheng (Pamphagidae) were endemic to the region of the Qilian Mountains. Species similarity between RTs ranged from 17.8 to 51.6 based on the Renkonen index. Similarly, the Sörensen index indicated a wide separation in species composition among RTs. The abundance of the eight most common species showed obvious differences among RTs and years. On average, mountain rangeland had the highest density values in 2007 and 2008, and alpine shrubland supported the smallest density. The densities in desert and mountain rangeland in 2007 were significantly higher than in 2008, while alpine rangeland and shrublands did not present obvious differences among years.

Abstract
Three CuO/CeO2 catalyst with different morphologies of ceria, namely nanospheres, nanorods and nanocubes, were synthesized and used to catalyze the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. The reactivity tests showed that the Cu supported on the ceria nanospheres exhibited both the highest activity and superior stability when compared with the nanocube and nanorod ceria catalysts. Operando X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) methods were used to characterize these catalysts in their working state. High resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM, STEM) was used to look at the local atomic structure and nano-scale morphology. Our results show that the morphology of the ceria support, which can involve different crystal faces and concentrations of defects and imperfections, has a critical impact on the catalytic properties and influences: (1) the dispersion of CuO in the as-synthesized catalyst; (2) the particle size of metallic Cu upon reduction during the WGS reaction, (3) the stability of the metallic Cu upon variations of temperature, and (4) the dissociation of water on the ceria support. The nanosphere ceria catalyst showed an excellent water dissociation capability, the best dispersion of Cu and a strong Cu-Ce interaction, therefore delivering the best performance among the three WGS catalysts. The metallic Cu, which is the active species during the WGS reaction, was more stabilized on the nanospheres than on the nanorods and nanocubes and thus led to a better stability of the nanosphere catalyst than the other two architectures. Each catalyst exhibited a distinctive line-shape in the 800-1600 cm(-1) region of the DRIFTS spectra, pointing to the existence of different types of carbonate or carboxylate species as surface intermediates for the WGS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of simultaneous integrated boost intensity-modulated radiotherapy (SIB-IMRT) for patients with locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (LANSCLC). METHODS 48 patients with LANSCLC treated with SIB-IMRT from January 2010 to April 2012 were retrospectively analysed. A radiation dose of 45-63 Gy (median dose, 51.58 Gy) was delivered to the planning target volume (1.8-2.0 Gy daily fractions) simultaneously with 55.0-74.2 Gy (median dose, 63 Gy) to the planning gross tumour volume (2.00-2.25 Gy daily fractions). 45 patients received concurrent/sequential chemotherapy. The overall survival (OS), locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRFS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Treatment-related pneumonitis and oesophagitis were graded according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events v. 4.0. RESULTS By 1 July 2013, 29 of the 48 patients were dead. The median follow-up time for the survivors was 28 months (19-44 months). The median OS and PFS were 21 and 14 months, respectively. The median LRFS time was not reached. The 2-year LRFS, OS and PFS were 62.5%, 45.1% and 28.0%, respectively. Two patients experienced Grade 3 treatment-related pneumonitis, two patients experienced Grade 5 treatment-related pneumonitis and two patients had ≥Grade 3 oesophagitis. CONCLUSION SIB-IMRT appears to be an effective therapeutic option in patients with LANSCLC and warrants further evaluation with increased number of patients in prospective clinical trials. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE This study explores the feasibility of delivering tumoricidal doses of radiation to primary lesions in non-small-cell lung cancer.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the specific molecular mechanism of the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β)-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition in a lung cancer cell line, and to provide new ideas for targeting therapy of lung cancer. A549 cells were treated with different concentrations of TGF-β and 5-aza-deoxycytidine (5-aza-dC). The morphological changes after the intervention were observed. The change in the expression of the epithelial marker E-cadherin (E-cad) was detected by Western blot. The proliferation of A549 cells was measured using the MTT assay. Cell movement and invasion capacity was evaluated with the cell scratch test and invasion test. TGF-β induced A549 cells to transform to a mesenchymal cell morphology and downregulated the expression of E-cad, and 5-aza-dC inhibited this phenomenon. Compared with the control group, the number of transmembrane cells was higher and cell migration was markedly increased in the experimental group with continued culture in the presence of 10 ng/mL TGF-β, showing significant differences (P < 0.05). CDH1 gene methylation is involved in TGF-β-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition in the alveolar epithelial cell line A549.

Abstract
A model Zr41.25Ti13.75Ni10Cu12.5Be22.5 (at.%) bulk metallic glass (BMG) is selected to explore the structural evolution on the atomic scale with decreasing temperature down to cryogenic level using high energy X-ray synchrotron radiation. We discover a close correlation between the atomic structure evolution and the strength of the BMG and find out that the activation energy increment of the concordantly atomic shifting at lower temperature is the main factor influencing the strength. Our results might provide a fundamental understanding of the atomic-scale structure evolution and may bridge the gap between the atomic-scale physics and the macro-scale fracture strength for BMGs.

Abstract
The relationship between serum neopterin levels and coronary heart disease (CHD) was investigated. Eighty-six CHD patients were divided into an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) group (N = 21), an unstable angina pectoris (UAP) group (N = 35), and a stable angina pectoris (SAP) group (N = 30), based on coronary angiography (CAG), 30 subjects without CHD served as the control group. Serum neopterin levels were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and relationships between neopterin and the severity of stenosis, stenosis number, and the stability of coronary artery were analyzed. Serum neopterin levels were higher in the AMI and UAP groups than in the SAP and control groups (P < 0.01), but no significant differences were observed between the AMI and UAP groups or between the SAP and control groups (P > 0.05). Mean serum neopterin levels were higher in the single, double, and three vessel lesion groups than in the control group (P < 0.05), whereas there were no significant differences among the lesion groups (P > 0.05). Serum levels of neopterin were significantly higher in the type II than in the type I or type III, plaque groups (P < 0.01), the incidence of type II plaque was significantly higher in the AMI and UAP groups compared to the SAP group (P < 0.01). Neopterin likely plays a role in the occurrence and development of athermanous plaque and can serve as a useful biomarker of vulnerable plaques. Immunoreaction may be involved in the pathophysiological process of CHD.

Abstract
1. Research was conducted to evaluate the impact of a diet containing grasshoppers on the carcase, physicochemical and sensory characteristics in a free-range, grassland-based broiler production system. 2. A total of 80, 28-d-old male broilers were reared on grassland containing a large population of grasshoppers (treatment PB). Control birds were reared intensively on a maize-soybean diet (treatment CB). At 91 d of age, 24 birds from each treatment were slaughtered to evaluate carcase, meat and sensory characteristics. 3. Treatment PB produced birds with significantly lower live weights, breast, wing, thigh and drum weights, and higher dressing percentage and breast percentage of carcase, compared with CB. Treatment PB produced breast meat with significantly higher redness values, shear force and protein content, and lower pH values, cooking loss, moisture and fat content compared with CB. Sensory panel results for breast and thigh meats showed no treatment effect on colour and juiciness, but significantly higher scores for chewiness, flavour, aroma and overall appreciation, and lower scores for tenderness from treatment PB compared with CB. 4. Rearing chickens on rangeland may provide an alternative way to produce poultry meat which is considered superior by modern consumers.

Abstract
Aluminum (Al) is widely used in daily life and will lead to environmental release and exposure. The toxicity of Al had been documented, and which attracted a growing concern on human and animal health. The immune system appears to be sensitive to Al exposure. But few studies focused on the potential immunological responses induced by Al. It is imperative to study the effects of Al on the immune function and this review discusses the effects of Al on autoimmunity, oral tolerance, expression of the immune cells, hypersensitivity and erythrocyte immune function. It will provide evidence to study the association between Al and immune function.

Abstract
AIMS To determine whether corncob residue (CCR) could be a good substrate for butanol production. METHODS AND RESULTS In this study, Ca(OH)₂ detoxification technique was used to remove inhibitors of lignocellulose enzymatic hydrolysis. During fermentation of untreated corncob residue hydrolysate (CCRH) by Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052, cell growth was inhibited and only 3·8 g l⁻¹ acetone, butanol and ethanol (ABE) was produced. After pretreatment with Ca(OH)₂, enzymatic hydrolysis of CCR resulted in 49·3 g l⁻¹ total sugars, about twofold of that of untreated one. In the fermentation of the Ca(OH)₂-detoxified CCRH, sugar utilization ratio was increased by 27·3%. When using the Ca(OH)₂-detoxified CCRH supplemented with 10 g l⁻¹ glucose, 16·0 g l⁻¹ ABE was produced, resulting in an ABE yield of 0·32 and a productivity of 0·33 g l⁻¹ h⁻¹. CONCLUSION The results in this study suggest that CCR was a good carbon source for ABE fermentation. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY It is the first time to use CCR as substrate for butanol production. Ca(OH)₂ detoxification pretreatment was proved to be an effective method to improve enzymatic digestibility of lignocellulose.

Abstract
Retinoblastoma protein-interacting zinc-finger gene 1 (RIZ1) expression is often silenced in many types of human tumors. However, the relationship between RIZ1 expression and malignant meningiomas remains unclear. Here we have found for the first time that the expression of RIZ1 genes are associated with meningiomas progression through extensive analyses of Affymetrix GeneChip microarray data. Further validation methods for gene expression included quantitative PCR (qPCR), western blot and immunohistochemistry analysis, and these methods confirmed that RIZ1 is significantly downregulated in malignant meningioma tissues, as compared with benign meningiomas. In addition, malignant meningioma cells were stably transfected with ectogenic RIZ1 using Lentivirus-mediated transfection, and the transfections were followed by an in vitro 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridin incorporation assay, colony formation assay, cell cycle analysis, invasive analysis, apoptotic assay and western blot analysis. Our results demonstrate that the forced expression of RIZ1 in a malignant meningioma cell line inhibited cellular proliferation and arrested the cells in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle. We also confirmed that overexpression of RIZ1 may induce apoptosis of malignant meningioma cells. Furthermore, RIZ1 overexpression in malignant meningioma cells was associated with the downregulation of c-myc expression. These results from our study indicate that RIZ1 expression is significantly downregulated as the formation of meningiomas progressed, and suggest that RIZ1 may represent a promising candidate tumor suppressor gene that contributes to malignant meningiomas.

Abstract
Nanofiltration separation of glyphosate simulated wastewater was investigated using a DK membrane. The effects of operating parameters and the addition of impurities on membrane performance were studied in detail. It was found that at 20 °C, with a glyphosate concentration of 500 mg/L and pH of 2.96, the glyphosate retention rate and the membrane permeate flux increased slightly with increasing transmembrane pressure. With an increase in operating temperature, the permeate flux increased linearly while the retention rate decreased. The permeate flux and glyphosate retention rate decreased with increasing feed concentration. Within the pH range of 3-5, the glyphosate retention rate decreases with increasing pH and reaches a minimum at the isoelectric point of the membrane, while the permeate flux reaches a maximum level at this point. In the pH range of 5-11, with the increases of pH, the glyphosate retention rate increases and the permeate flux decreases. Glyphosate retention decreases slightly with increasing NaCl and phosphite concentrations. This can be explained in terms of the shielding phenomenon.

Abstract
Solitary intracranial plasmacytoma (SIP) is very rare. This case report presents serial findings of SIP located in the spheno-clival region in a 54-year old female who presented with an inferior hemianopia in the right eye and an enlarged physiological blind spot in both eyes. Based on the initial diagnosis of a spheno-clival region chordoma, the tumour was partially resected by the nasal–sphenoidal sinus approach. Subsequently, the correct diagnosis of SIP was made based on the pathology and immunohistochemical staining of the tumour. The patient was treated using a whole skull-base radiation therapy protocol with 45 Gy and she was in good physical condition during the subsequent 22 months. The findings of a series of similar case reports documenting SIP in 20 cases published from 1976 to 2008 are also reviewed. Based on these case reports, the key features of SIP, including their clinical manifestations, clinical imaging characteristics, treatment and prognosis, are described.

Abstract
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most common psychological disorder among victims of natural disasters. PTSD prevalence and risk factors among adolescents remain unidentified among victims of the Wen-Chuan earthquake. This study screened survivors to determine the prevalence of PTSD and examined risk factors for PTSD among adolescents at three Wen-Chuan secondary schools. PTSD screening was done using the PTSD Checklist-Civilian version (PCL-C). A generalized estimating equation approach was used to control for repeated measurements in the same individuals and to predict risk factors for PTSD. The study included 1,474 students in grades 7, 8, 10 and 11 from three Wen-Chuan secondary schools at 4, 6, 9, and 12 months after the earthquake. The average age of students was 15.0 (13.0, 16.0) both at the first and the second time point, and 16.0 (14.0, 17.0) at the third and the fourth time point. The screened prevalence of PTSD was 11.2%, 8.8%, 6.8% and 5.7% at 4, 6, 9, and 12 months after the earthquake, respectively. Risk factors for PTSD were: time duration, school location (the proximity of epicenter), grade, nationality, parent injury, and severe property damage. In conclusion, PTSD risk factors are in accordance with previous studies; however, the role of nationality and time duration in post-traumatic stress disorder merits further research.

Abstract
Liquid transportation fuels must burn cleanly and have high energy densities, criteria that are currently fulfilled by petroleum, a non-renewable resource, the combustion of which leads to increasing levels of atmospheric CO(2). An attractive approach for the production of transportation fuels from renewable biomass resources is to convert carbohydrates into alkanes with targeted molecular weights, such as C(8)-C(15) for jet-fuel applications. Targeted n-alkanes can be produced directly from fructose by an integrated process involving first the dehydration of this C(6) sugar to form 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, followed by controlled formation of C-C bonds with acetone to form C(9) and C(15) compounds, and completed by hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation reactions to form the corresponding n-alkanes. Analogous reactions are demonstrated starting with 5-methylfurfural or 2-furaldehyde, with the latter leading to C(8) and C(13) n-alkanes.

Abstract
Diminishing fossil fuel reserves and growing concerns about global warming indicate that sustainable sources of energy are needed in the near future. For fuels to be useful in the transportation sector, they must have specific physical properties that allow for efficient distribution, storage and combustion; these properties are currently fulfilled by non-renewable petroleum-derived liquid fuels. Ethanol, the only renewable liquid fuel currently produced in large quantities, suffers from several limitations, including low energy density, high volatility, and contamination by the absorption of water from the atmosphere. Here we present a catalytic strategy for the production of 2,5-dimethylfuran from fructose (a carbohydrate obtained directly from biomass or by the isomerization of glucose) for use as a liquid transportation fuel. Compared to ethanol, 2,5-dimethylfuran has a higher energy density (by 40 per cent), a higher boiling point (by 20 K), and is not soluble in water. This catalytic strategy creates a route for transforming abundant renewable biomass resources into a liquid fuel suitable for the transportation sector, and may diminish our reliance on petroleum.

Abstract
The in vitro culture of lymphatic smooth muscle cells (SMCs) is a crucial step in studying their function and involvement in disease. Yet there is no efficient approach available so far because of the difficulties posed by the small size of most lymphatic vessels. We present a simple yet efficient method for isolating and culturing SMCs of collecting lymphatic vessels from guinea pig mesenteric tissue. In our approach, thin lymphatic vessels were digested twice from adventitia to media to release SMCs, which were then cultured by traditional methods. The lymphatic SMCs we cultured did not exhibit contact inhibition and demonstrated typical SMCs characteristics under light microscope, electron microscope and by immunohistochemical studies. This method is applicable to the culturing of lymphatic SMCs from other organs and provides useful materials for physiological and pathological lymphatic studies.

Abstract
There is an increasing interest in developing new methods to reduce bacteria adhesion onto polymeric materials that are used in biomedical implants. The antibacterial behavior on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) treated by acetylene (C2H2) plasma immersion ion implantation-deposition (PIII-D) is investigated. The surface structure of the treated PET is determined by laser Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The results show that a thin amorphous polymer-like carbon (PLC) layer is formed on the PET surface. Atomic force micrographs (AFM) show that C2H2 PIII-D significantly changes the surface morphology of PET. The capacities of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (SE) to adhere onto PET are quantitatively determined by plate counting and Gamma-ray counting of 125I radio labeled bacteria in vitro. The results indicate that the adhesion of the two kinds of bacteria to PET is suppressed by PLC. The adhesion efficiency of SE on the coated surface is only about 14% of that of the untreated PET surface, and that of SA is about 35% of that of the virgin surface. The electrokinetic potentials of the bacterial cells and substrates are determined by zeta potential measurement. All the substrates as well as the bacterial strain have negative zeta potentials, and it means that bacterial adhesion is not mediated by electrostatic interactions. The surface energy components of the various substrates and bacteria are calculated based on measurements in water, formamide and diiodomethane. The surface free energies obtained are used to calculate the interfacial free energies of adhesion ( deltaFAdh ) of SA and SE onto various substrates, and it is found that bacterial adhesion is energetically unfavorable on the PLC deposited on PET by C2H2 PIII-D.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinical features of amebic liver abscess, the causes of misdignosis and the effect of medical and surgical therapy on patient's prognosis. METHODS The clinical features of 36 patients with amebic liver abscess admitted from 1982 to 1997 in our hospital were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS The major clinical manifestations were: abdominal pain (86.1%), fever (86.1%), hepatomegaly with tenderness (83.3%) and right intercostal tenderness (58.3%). Leukocytosis was observed in 61.1%, and increased of ESR in 88.5% (23/28). Serologies against Entamoeba histolytica were noted in 92.6%. Ultrasonography showed single lesions in 75% and right-lobe involvement in 75%. All patients were treated with metronidazole and 27 patients received treatment with needle aspiration or draining at the same time. After treatment, 10 patients were cured, 25 patients were improved significantly and effective rate was 97.2%. One patient died of hepatic failure. CONCLUSION Medical therapy alone was excellent for small abscesses, while percutaneous needle aspiration or draining was a successful approach in patients with large abscesses.
