Quasielastic 3He(e,e'p)2H reaction at Q2 = 1.5 GeV2 for recoil momenta up to 1 GeV/c. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 94:192302. Abstract
We have studied the quasielastic 3He(e,e(')p)2H reaction in perpendicular coplanar kinematics, with the energy and the momentum transferred by the electron fixed at 840 MeV and 1502 MeV/c, respectively. The 3He(e,e(')p)2H cross section was measured for missing momenta up to 1000 MeV/c, while the A(TL) asymmetry was extracted for missing momenta up to 660 MeV/c. For missing momenta up to 150 MeV/c, the cross section is described by variational calculations using modern 3He wave functions. For missing momenta from 150 to 750 MeV/c, strong final-state interaction effects are observed. Near 1000 MeV/c, the experimental cross section is more than an order of magnitude larger than predicted by available theories. The A(TL) asymmetry displays characteristic features of broken factorization with a structure that is similar to that generated by available models.

Abstract
This Letter describes the measurement of the energy dependence of elliptic flow for charged particles in Au+Au collisions using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Data taken at collision energies of square root of s(NN)=19.6, 62.4, 130, and 200 GeV are shown over a wide range in pseudorapidity. These results, when plotted as a function of eta(')=|eta|-y(beam), scale with approximate linearity throughout eta('), implying no sharp changes in the dynamics of particle production as a function of pseudorapidity or increasing beam energy.

Abstract
Results of the Jefferson Lab Hall A quasielastic 3He(e,e'p)pn measurements are presented. These measurements were performed at fixed transferred momentum and energy, q=1502 MeV/c and omega=840 MeV, respectively, for missing momenta p(m) up to 1 GeV/c and missing energies in the continuum region, up to pion threshold; this kinematic coverage is much more extensive than that of any previous experiment. The cross section data are presented along with the effective momentum density distribution and compared to theoretical models.

Centrality dependence of charged hadron transverse momentum spectra in Au+Au collisions from sqrt[s(NN)]=62.4 to 200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 94:082304. Abstract
We have measured transverse momentum distributions of charged hadrons produced in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=62.4 GeV. The spectra are presented for transverse momenta 0.25<p(T)<4.5 GeV/c, in a pseudorapidity range of 0.2<eta<1.4. The nuclear modification factor R(AA) is calculated relative to p+p data at the same collision energy as a function of collision centrality. For 2<p(T)<4.5 GeV/c, R(AA) is found to be significantly larger than in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]= 130 and 200 GeV. In contrast to the large change in R(AA), we observe a very similar centrality evolution of the p(T) spectra at sqrt[s(NN)]=62.4 and 200 GeV. The dynamical origin of this surprising factorization of energy and centrality dependence of particle production in heavy-ion collisions remains to be understood.

Measurement of the generalized forward spin polarizabilities of the neutron. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2004; 93:152301. Abstract
The generalized forward spin polarizabilities gamma(0) and delta(LT) of the neutron have been extracted for the first time in a Q2 range from 0.1 to 0.9 GeV2. Since gamma(0) is sensitive to nucleon resonances and delta(LT) is insensitive to the Delta resonance, it is expected that the pair of forward spin polarizabilities should provide benchmark tests of the current understanding of the chiral dynamics of QCD. The new results on delta(LT) show significant disagreement with chiral perturbation theory calculations, while the data for gamma(0) at low Q2 are in good agreement with a next-to-leading-order relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory calculation. The data show good agreement with the phenomenological MAID model.

Abstract
We have measured the spin structure functions g(1) and g(2) of 3He in a double-spin experiment by inclusively scattering polarized electrons at energies ranging from 0.862 to 5.058 GeV off a polarized 3He target at a 15.5 degrees scattering angle. Excitation energies covered the resonance and the onset of the deep inelastic regions. We have determined for the first time the Q2 evolution of Gamma(1)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)g(1)(x,Q2)dx, Gamma(2)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)g(2)(x,Q2)dx, and d(2)(Q2)= integral (1)(0)x(2)[2g(1)(x,Q2)+3g(2)(x,Q2)]dx for the neutron in the range 0.1< or =Q2< or =0.9 GeV2 with good precision. Gamma(1)(Q2) displays a smooth variation from high to low Q2. The Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule holds within uncertainties and d(2) is nonzero over the measured range.

Abstract
We have measured the neutron spin asymmetry A(n)(1) with high precision at three kinematics in the deep inelastic region at x=0.33, 0.47, and 0.60, and Q(2)=2.7, 3.5, and 4.8 (GeV/c)(2), respectively. Our results unambiguously show, for the first time, that A(n)(1) crosses zero around x=0.47 and becomes significantly positive at x=0.60. Combined with the world proton data, polarized quark distributions were extracted. Our results, in general, agree with relativistic constituent quark models and with perturbative quantum chromodynamics (PQCD) analyses based on the earlier data. However they deviate from PQCD predictions based on hadron helicity conservation.

Abstract
We have measured the proton recoil polarization in the 4He(e-->,e(')p-->)4H reaction at Q(2)=0.5, 1.0, 1.6, and 2.6 (GeV/c)(2). The measured ratio of polarization transfer coefficients differs from a fully relativistic calculation, favoring the inclusion of a medium modification of the proton form factors predicted by a quark-meson coupling model. In addition, the measured induced polarizations agree reasonably well with the fully relativistic calculation indicating that the treatment of final-state interactions is under control.

Abstract
We present data on the inclusive scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized 3He target at energies from 0.862 to 5.06 GeV, obtained at a scattering angle of 15.5 degrees. Our data include measurements from the quasielastic peak, through the nucleon resonance region, and beyond, and were used to determine the virtual photon cross-section difference sigma(1/2)-sigma(3/2). We extract the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the neutron in the range of four-momentum transfer squared Q2 of 0.1-0.9 GeV2.

Abstract
DNA vaccine against Cysticercus cellulosae infection was developed and its efficacy was tested. A pair of primers specific to antigen B gene of C. cellulosae was designed which amplified the gene successfully with RT-PCR. The gene was ligated to PV93 vector, and the recombinant of antigen B gene and PV93 was transformed to JM83 cells. The transformed JM83 cells were cultured in a large scale and the plasmid purified. Based on the recombinant plasmid. a DNA vaccine was developed and used to vaccinate two groups of experimental pigs. In each group, there was a routine vaccine, an enhanced vaccine and a control group. Groups 1 and 2 were challenged at 4 months and at 14 days post vaccination respectively with eggs of Taenia solium. The antibody response was also tested with ELISA. The results suggested that all animals vaccinated AgB gene DNA vaccine, no matter by routine or enhanced vaccine, their antibodies reached maximum peak 23 days post vaccination and decreased gradually. When the animals were challenged 4 months after vaccination, they had strong immunity and the parasites decrease rates were 91.2% and 93.1% respectively. When pigs vaccinated with AgB gene DNA vaccine were challenged 14 days post vaccination with 18,000 eggs/pig. The animals showed strong immunity and the parasite decrease rates were 99.5% and 84.9% respectively. However at that time, the antibodies did not reach the peak. While in the control group, the number of C. cellulosae was as many as 2,500. It was concluded that the pigs vaccinated with DNA vaccine had strong immunity against infection of eggs of T. solium.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the relationship between pathological features and classification criteria of the breast Phyllodes tumor. METHODS 203 cases of breast phyllodes tumor diagnosed in 22 hospitals since 1956 were analyzed and reappraised by a retrospective study. RESULTS 133 cases were benign, 42 cases were borderline and 28 were malignant. The follow-up (6 to 372 months) showed that 28/133 benign, 19/42 borderline and 18/28 malignant cases recurred, and 17 patients (2 borderline and 15 malignant) died. The statistic cluster analysis demonstrated that stromal cellar atypia, margin involvement, mitotic activity and tumor necrosis were retained in the variable group, and no error distinguish were showed. CONCLUSIONS The breast phyllodes tumor can be classified as the following three types: benign, borderline and malignant. It is important to diagnose and classify the breast phyllodes tumor according to the involvement of tumor margin, stromal cellar atypia, mitotic activity, stromal overgrowth and tumor necrosis. There are significant differences of 5 years survival rates, recurrent rates and death rates between the benign, borderline and malignant breast phyllodes tumor. With wide excision the recurrence of the tumor decreased suggesting that broad excision is preferred for the benign phyllodes tumor and mastectomy is indicated for recurred borderline and malignant tumors.

Abstract
The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton G(E(p))/G(M(p)), which is an image of its charge and magnetization distributions, was measured at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) using the recoil polarization technique. The ratio of the form factors is directly proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal components of the polarization of the recoil proton in the elastic e(-->)p---> e(-->)p reaction. The new data presented span the range 3.5< Q(2)< 5.6 GeV(2) and are well described by a linear Q(2) fit. Also, the ratio sqrt[Q(2)] F(2(p))/F(1(p)) reaches a constant value above Q(2) = 2 GeV(2).

Abstract
In order to study the metabolism of essential trace elements in diabetics, we studied alloxan-diabetic rats for the distribution patterns of chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) in the liver, kidney, pancreas, and testes, as well as in the organ subcellular fractions. Normal rats were used as controls. Cr 50-enriched stable isotopic tracer solution was given by intravenous injection to avoid the difficulties of estimation of Cr status. Our data show that the concentrations of Zn in liver and kidney, of Co, Fe, and Zn in pancreas, and of Fe and Zn in testes of the diabetic rats were significantly higher than in the control rats. Nevertheless, the concentrations of Cr in pancreas, Fe in kidney, and Cr and Se in testes of the diabetic rats were significantly lower than in the controls. Furthermore, we observed significant alterations of element concentrations in subcellular fractions of various organs in the diabetic rats. These results suggest that changing hormone levels may interfere with the accumulation of some trace elements both in the organs and in the subcellular fractions of rats.

Abstract
Saccharomyces cerevisiae LZ-53 was selected from 240 primary yeast strains from different genera and species, whose chromium (Cr) resistance and biomass were higher than others were. The highest biomass and Cr content of the strain was obtained in 30 h at 28 degrees C and 200 rpm, when 20 ml of the culture in 250-ml shake flasks was grown in wort containing 1200 microg/ml Cr. The initial pH was adjusted to 6.0. The optimal inoculum volume was 10% (v/v). The Cr content of the cells was determined by neutron activation analysis. Under the optimized cultivation conditions, the Cr content reached 3248 microg/g.

Abstract
We used an autoimmune serum from a patient with discoid lupus erythematosus to clone a cDNA of 2808 base pairs. Its open reading frame of 2079 base pairs encodes a predicted polypeptide of 693 amino acids named CDA1 (cell division autoantigen-1). CDA1 has a predicted molecular mass of 79,430 Daltons and a pI of 4.26. The size of the cDNA is consistent with its estimated mRNA size. CDA1 comprises an N-terminal proline-rich domain, a central basic domain, and a C-terminal bipartite acidic domain. It has four putative nuclear localization signals and potential sites for phosphorylation by cAMP and cGMP-dependent kinases, protein kinase C, thymidine kinase, casein kinase II, and cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs). CDA1 is phosphorylated in HeLa cells and by cyclin D1/CDK4, cyclin A/CDK2, and cyclin B/CDK1 in vitro. Its basic and acidic domains contain regions homologous to almost the entire human leukemia-associated SET protein. The same basic region is also homologous to nucleosome assembly proteins, testis TSPY protein, and an uncharacterized brain protein. CDA1 is present in the nuclear fraction of HeLa cells and localizes to the nucleus and nucleolus in HeLa cells transfected with CDA1 or its N terminus containing all four nuclear localization signals. Its acidic C terminus localizes mainly to the cytoplasm. CDA1 levels are low in serum-starved cells, increasing dramatically with serum stimulation. Expression of the CDA1 transgene, but not its N terminus, arrests HeLa cell growth, colony numbers, cell density, and bromodeoxyuridine uptake in a dose-dependent manner. The ability of CDA1 to arrest cell growth is abolished by mutation of the two CDK consensus phosphorylation sites. We propose that CDA1 is a negative regulator of cell growth and that its activity is regulated by its expression level and phosphorylation.

Polarization measurements in high-energy deuteron photodisintegration. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2001; 86:2975-2979. Abstract
We present measurements of the recoil proton polarization for the d(gamma-->,p-->)n reaction at straight theta(c.m.) = 90 degrees for photon energies up to 2.4 GeV. These are the first data in this reaction for polarization transfer with circularly polarized photons. The induced polarization p(y) vanishes above 1 GeV, contrary to meson-baryon model expectations, in which resonances lead to large polarizations. However, the polarization transfer Cx does not vanish above 1 GeV, inconsistent with hadron helicity conservation. Thus, we show that the scaling behavior observed in the d(gamma,p)n cross sections is not a result of perturbative QCD. These data should provide important tests of new nonperturbative calculations in the intermediate energy regime.

Abstract
The dynamin family of GTP-binding proteins has been implicated as playing an important role in endocytosis. In Drosophila shibire, mutations of the single dynamin gene cause blockade of endocytosis and neurotransmitter release, manifest as temperature-sensitive neuromuscular paralysis. Mammals express three dynamin genes: the neural specific dynamin I, ubiquitous dynamin II, and predominantly testicular dynamin III. Mutations of dynamin I result in a blockade of synaptic vesicle recycling and receptor-mediated endocytosis. Here, we show that dynamin II plays a key role in controlling constitutive and regulated hormone secretion from mouse pituitary corticotrope (AtT20) cells. Dynamin II is preferentially localized to the Golgi apparatus where it interacts with G-protein betagamma subunit and regulates secretory vesicle release. The presence of dynamin II at the Golgi apparatus and its interaction with the betagamma subunit are mediated by the pleckstrin homology domain of the GTPase. Overexpression of the pleckstrin homology domain, or a dynamin II mutant lacking the C-terminal SH3-binding domain, induces translocation of endogenous dynamin II from the Golgi apparatus to the plasma membrane and transformation of dynamin II from activity in the secretory pathway to receptor-mediated endocytosis. Thus, dynamin II regulates secretory vesicle formation from the Golgi apparatus and hormone release from mammalian neuroendocrine cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the regulation of early brain tissue metabolic changing after brain injuries and the clinical significance. METHODS There were 17 patients with brain injuries. Early dire ct monitoring of P(ti)O(2), P(ti)CO(2), pH and brain temperature, dynamic observation of the relation between various parameters and clinics after brain injuries were performed. RESULTS Early changes of P(ti)O(2), P(ti)CO(2) and pH were closely correlated with outcome. The death rate obviously increased when P(ti)O(2) was continuously lower than 9 mmHg within 24 hours after injuries. Secondary brain injury prolonged and aggravated brain tissue metabolic disturbance. When intracerebral pressure was over 30 mmHg P(ti)O(2) began to decrease. The brain temperature in brain death patients was evidently lower than axillary temperature. CONCLUSIONS The direct monitoring of P(ti)O(2), P(ti)CO(2), pH and brain temperature is safe and accurate and can find early anoxia da mage to brain tissue and provide reliable basis for clinical therapy. It ha s an instructive significance in selecting and studying a new treatment method in brain injuries. And it can be taken as a criterion in clinical judging brain deaths.

Novel variant of p230 trans-Golgi network protein identified by serum from Sjögren's syndrome patient. Eur J Cell Biol 2000; 79:790-4. Abstract
Trans-Golgi network (TGN) protein p230 is a peripheral membrane protein associated with the cytoplasmic face of the TGN. TGNp230 is an extensively coiled-coil protein with flexible amino- and carboxyl-terminal ends, associates with non-clathrin-coated vesicles arising from the TGN, and is implicated in vesicle biogenesis. Here we used an autoimmune serum from a patient with S ogren's syndrome to clone partial cDNAs from a human hepatoma HepG2 expression library. The partial cDNAs encoded a novel amino-terminal splice variant of TGNp230. Specific reactivity of the autoimmune serum for p230 is supported by immunofluorescene staining of the Golgi apparatus, immunoblotting of a > 200-kDa HeLa cell protein, and reactivity with a bacterially expressed GST-p230 fusion protein. The alternative splicing occurs within the first proline-rich domain of p230. It comprises a deletion of 30 bp followed immediately by an additional 66 bp absent in the published sequence. RT-PCR analysis indicated that the splicing occurs independently of previously reported carboxyl-terminal splicing, and that this novel splice variant is more frequent than the previously reported p230. The novel splice variant of p230 is also located at the TGN. We propose that p230 splice variants may be implicated in selection of cargo molecules for vesicles arising from the TGN.

Abstract
An ICP-AES method was established for the determination of 14 elements in chromium-rich and normal brewer's yeast. The RSDs of two standard reference materials were 0. 5%-3.2% and 0.4%-3.4%, respectively. The results showed that chromium contents could affect the concentrations of other elements in chromium-rich brewer's yeast. The concentrations of K, Mn, P, V, Mg and Ca in chromium-rich brewer's yeast were significantly lower than those in normal brewer's yeast.

Abstract
Selenium is an essential trace element in many living organisms. In the present paper, the subcellular distribution of selenium and Se-containing proteins in human liver samples, which were obtained from normal subjects who had an accidental death, was investigated by differential centrifugation and column chromatography. Selenium was mainly enriched in nuclei, mitochondria and cytosol. Almost half of Se existed in the nuclei due to their large amount in liver and high Se concentration. 15-30% of Se was found in small compounds with Mr<2000 in the liver components separated by dialysis. The average abundance of Se in small molecular mass species of whole-liver was 23.6%, which suggested most of Se associated with biological macromolecules. Eight kinds of Se-containing proteins with molecular mass of 335+/-20, 249+/-15, 106+/-11, 84.6+/-5.8, 70. 5+/-5.4, 45.6+/-1.5, 14.8+/-2.6, 8.5+/-1.2 kDa were found in the subcellular fractions of human liver. Among them the 335, 84.6 and 8. 5 kDa proteins were individually present in one subcellular fraction, whereas the others coexisted in two, three or four subcellular fractions. The most abundant Se-containing proteins, 70.5 and 14.8 kDa, accounted for 33.6% and 48.5% in the whole-liver soluble Se-containing protein, respectively. The former was enriched in cytosol and the latter was mainly present in nuclei and mitochondria.

Abstract
Selenium is an important and essential trace element to living systems. In the article, two methods of instrumental neutron activation analysis and hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry were applied to determine Se in biological samples and the accuracy was evaluated by several reference materials. The subcellular distribution of selenium in human liver samples, which were obtained from normal subjects who had an accidental death, was investigated by differential centrifugation combined with INAA. Selenium was mainly enriched in mitochondria, nuclei, and cytosol. Almost half of the total Se content existed in nuclei as a result of the large amount in liver and the high Se concentration. Generally, the highest Se concentration in the mitochondrial fractions of each liver sample suggested that Se had important functions in this liver component.

Comparison of the chromium distribution in organs and subcellular fractions of normal and diabetic rats by using enriched stable isotope Cr-50 tracer technique. Biol Trace Elem Res 1999; 71-72:121-9. Abstract
The enriched stable isotope 50Cr(III) tracer technique combined with neutron activation analysis was used to examine the intracellular distribution of Cr(III) in the liver, pancreas, testes, and kidney homogenates of both normal and diabetic rats. Our new results showed that the nucleic fraction has the highest Cr concentration in the liver cell of both normal and diabetic rats. The diabetic rats retain more Cr in the mitochondrial and lysosomal fractions of liver homogenate than the normal. This is likely an indication of chromium participating in the glucose or lipid metabolism to compensate the low level of insulin in the body of diabetic rats. The concentrations of Cr in the subcellular fractions of pancreas, testes, and kidney in the normal rats are higher than those in the diabetic rats, which favor the hypothesis that Cr(III) plays its biological function via interaction with the insulin-sensitive tissues or enhancement of the sensitivity of the insulin receptor.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the therapeutical mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine Xingnaojing injection (XNJI) for acute alcohol intoxication. METHODS XNJI was used in treating the experimental model rabbits (n = 26) and the patients (n = 8) admitted to the emergency department with acute alcoholism. Before and after the treatment, beta-EP, superoxide anion (free radicals) and SOD were measured. RESULTS XNJI could enhance the regaining consciousness of rabbits and patients, simultaneously reduce the concentration of beta-EP in plasma to the normal level (drunk rabbits 127.09 +/- 13.67 ng/L, normal rabbits 41.48 +/- 7.46 ng/L. P < 0.01, drunk patients 292.97 +/- 14.85 ng/L, normal people 221.60 +/- 15.95 ng/L, P < 0.01). The concentration change of superoxide anion (free radicals) in plasma of rabbits and patients was similar to beta-EP (drunk rabbits 313.39 +/- 15.64 u/L, normal rabbits 254.27 +/- 21.71 u/L, P < 0.01; drunk patients 278.47 +/- 11.48 u/L, normal people 159.92 +/- 11.51 u/L, P < 0.01), and SOD was inversely changed (drunk rabbits 53.57 +/- 6.48%, normal rabbits 77.18 +/- 7.89%, P < 0.01; drunk patients 43.76 +/- 7.84%, normal people 82.53 +/- 4.33%, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS XNJI is similar to Naloxone in pharmacologic action. And it is an effective antioxidant. It can be used for treating alcoholism.

Abstract
The serum and urine chromium concentrations of 57 diabetics and 55 normal fasting subjects were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Our results indicate that the chromium concentration ranges of serum and urine for diabetics are 0.22-0.36 and 4.54-5.90 microg/L, respectively, significantly lower than 0.66-0.84 7.80-9.68 microg/L for the normal (P<0.001), which implies that the elderly diabetics probably lack chromium. Further, it was found that the urine chromium level of the female diabetics was substantially higher than that of the male in the same age group (P<0.01), whereas the serum chromium level was almost the same. However, the urine chromium concentration increases with aging, no matter who the diabetics or the controls are. The serum chromium concentrations of the 24 cases patients with 2-h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were significantly lower than that of those with empty stomach, whereas the urine chromium exhibits a contrary tendency. Our data indicate that the chromium lost and excreted from human body increases with aging and is related to the diabetics. Thus, it is recommended to supplement a certain amount of chromium to the elderly diabetics according to their nutritional level.

Abstract
The activable enriched stable isotope Cr-50 compound Cr2O3 was used as a tracer to study the metabolism of chromium(III) [CR(III)] intragastrically administered in normal and diabetic rats. The comparison of absorption, distribution, and excretion in organs and tissues of the two groups do not show much alteration, but some differences exist indeed. The contents of 51Cr radioactivity of the diabetic rats appear to be of higher retention than in most studied organisms. The urinary 51Cr excretion of diabetics is significantly higher than that of normal rats. Therefore, a conclusion can be drawn that the insulin-dependent rats generally absorb and excrete more chromium (Cr) than the normal rats.

Abstract
The levels of mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) and their correlation in human scalp hair of 29 pairs of pregnant women and their newborns living at a high-Hg and low-Se area, the Second Song-Hua-Jiang River System, have been studied by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Our results indicate that the Hg level in infant hair samples are roughly close to that in their mothers, whereas the Se level in infants is much higher. Furthermore, the molar ratios of Se/Hg in newborns are also 40% higher than those in mothers. It demonstrates that infants are able to absorb more selenium from their mothers' bodies to protect against or alleviate the intoxication of Hg. This "autoprotective mechanism" likely plays a critical role during fetal development. The possible chemical species of Hg and Se in hair is also discussed.

Abstract
Concentrations of chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br) and iodine (I) in heart, liver, spleen, lungs, muscle and hair of normal and healthy persons living in Beijing area were determined with neutron activation method. Results showed that Cl concentrations in variety of tissues, except for hair, were no significant difference. Cl concentration in muscle was slightly less than that in other tissues. Bromine concentrations in lungs and iodine in liver were the highest. Bromine concentration in human tissues was significantly lower in Beijing area than abroad, and iodine was only slightly less and without statistical significance. Furthermore, Cl, Br and I in four kinds of biological standard reference materials were determined, and their results conformed with the recommendation values.

Abstract
In the cloning and sequencing of growth-promoting genes of the blacklip abalone, Haliotis rubra (Leach, 1814), two DNA variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs) were identified in abalone cDNA libraries. One contained a 33 bp repeat unit (5'-CCCAAGGTCCCCAAGGTCAGGGAGGCGAAGGCT-3') located in the 3' untranslated region of a putative growth hormone (GH) gene, and the repeat was designated as GHR. The other contained an 18 bp repeat unit (5'-ACCCGGCGCTTATTAGAG-3') located in the 3' untranslated region of a putative molluscan insulin-related peptides (MIP) gene, and was designated as MIPR. Primers flanking the two VNTR repeat regions were derived from sequence information. One hundred blacklip abalones were collected along the Victorian coastline and used in a preliminary population study. The range of GHR alleles containing the 33 bp basic unit repeat motif included 7 to 20 repeats, with allele GHR 8 not being identified. The most frequent alleles contained GHR 16 and 17 repeats (56.0% and 16.5%, respectively). Four types of alleles were identified in MIPR, viz 4, 5, 6 and 7 repeats. The alleles containing 6 and 5 repeats were the most frequent (50.0% and 41.5%, respectively). Overall, the results indicate that these two DNA minisatellites have use in abalone studies, including paternity resting, triploid testing, population genetic structure, and gene flow.

Abstract
IL-1beta is an endogenous pyrogen that is induced during systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- or IL-1-induced fever. We have examined the fever and cytokine responses following i.p. injection of IL-1 agonists, IL-1alpha and IL-1beta, and compared these with response to LPS (i.p.) in wild-type and IL-1beta-deficient mice. The IL-1beta deficient mice appear to have elevated body temperature but exhibit a normal circadian temperature cycle. Exogenously injected IL-1beta, IL-1alpha, or LPS induced hyperresponsive fevers in the IL-1beta-deficient mice. We also observed phenotypic differences between wild-type and IL-1beta-deficient mice in hypothalamic basal mRNA levels for IL-1alpha and IL-6, but not for IL-1beta-converting enzyme or IL-1 receptor type I or type II. The IL-1alpha mRNA levels were down-regulated, whereas the IL-6 mRNA levels were up-regulated in the hypothalamus of IL-1beta-deficient mice as compared with wild-type mice. The IL-1beta-deficient mice also responded to LPS challenge with significantly higher serum corticosterone and with lower serum tumor necrosis factor type alpha levels than the wild-type mice. The data suggest that, in the redundant cascade of proinflammatory cytokines, IL-1beta plays an important but not obligatory role in fever induction by LPS or IL-1alpha, as well as in the induction of serum tumor necrosis factor type alpha and corticosterone responses either by LPS or by IL-1alpha or IL-1beta.

Abstract
The multiple actions of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) on neuroendocrine and behavioural functions can now be examined using new, high affinity, non peptidic antagonists which exhibit central activity upon systemic application. We have shown that compound CP 154,526 (butyl-ethyl-[2,5-dimethyl-7-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-7H-pyrrolo [2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-yl]amine) displaces [125I][Tyr0]CRF from rat hippocampal CRF receptors (IC50 = 0.5 nM) and from pituitary CRF receptors (IC50 = 0.04 nM). The same compound inhibits in a concentration-dependent manner the ovine CRF (0.1 microM)-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity in membranes of a mouse pituitary adenoma cell line, AtT20, with an IC50 value of 50 nM. Systemic application of the CRF receptor antagonist (0.16 mg/kg i.p.) blocked recombinant human interleukin-1 beta 5 micrograms/kg i.p.) induced fever in rats. The CRF receptor antagonist CP 154,526 (1 mg/kg i.p.) also exhibited signs of anxiolytic-like activity in the elevated plus-maze test in rats.

Subchronic glucocorticoid pretreatment reversibly attenuates IL-beta induced fever in rats; IL-6 mRNA is elevated while IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta mRNAs are suppressed, in the CNS. Abstract
Subchronic (36 h) exposure of rats to corticosterone (CS) (100 mg/pellet,subcutaneously), blocked the pyrogenic response to recombinant human interleukin 113 (rhIL-1 beta, 5 mu g/kg, ip.). CS treatment reduced the basal mRNA levels of IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta, but elevated the mRNA levels of IL-6 in the hypothalamus and hippocampus as shown by RT-PCR. The CS treatment clamped the cytokine mRNA levels, and injection of rhIL-1 beta to CS treated rats did not significantly affect these altered mRNA levels. IL-6 bioactivity in serum was not significantly changed by CS treatment, but increased 50 times upon injection of rhIL-1 beta. rhIL-1 beta caused a significantly lower induction of serum IL-6 levels in CS pretreated rats (9-fold). The pyrogenic response to injection of rhIL-1 beta has returned 5 days after the removal of the corticosterone pellet, and the hypothalamic cytokine mRNA levels (IL-1 alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-6) have returned to basal. These results suggest that altered and clamped hypothalamic IL-1 alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-6 mRNA levels may be involved in the antipyretic effects of a pretreatment with high doses of CS and that these CS effects are rapidly reversible.

Interleukin (IL)-6 gene expression in the central nervous system is necessary for fever response to lipopolysaccharide or IL-1 beta: a study on IL-6-deficient mice. J Exp Med 1996; 183:311-6. Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1 beta, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) are considered to act as endogenous pyrogens. Because of the complex pattern of cross-inductions between these cytokines, the relative role of the central and peripheral production of these cytokines in eliciting the fever response has not yet been clarified. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of IL-6 in the fever response by making use of mice carrying a null mutation in the IL-6 gene. The intraperitoneal injections of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (50 micrograms/kg) and recombinant murine (rm) IL-1 beta (10 micrograms/kg), respectively, failed to evoke fever response in IL-6-deficient mice, whereas the same doses of LPS and rmIL-1 beta caused fever response in wild-type mice. The fever response could be induced in the IL-6-deficient mice by intracerebroventricular injection of recombinant human (rh) IL-6 (500 ng/mouse), whereas intracerebroventricular injection of rmIL-1 beta (100 ng/mouse) failed to produce fever response in the IL-6-deficient mice. These results suggest that central IL-6 is a necessary component of the fever response to both endogenous (IL-1 beta) and exogenous (LPS) pyrogens in mice and that IL-6 acts downstream from both peripheral and central IL-1 beta.

The type I interleukin-1 receptor mediates fever in the rat as shown by interleukin-1 receptor subtype selective ligands. Neurosci Lett 1995; 201:33-6. Abstract
The interleukin-1 (IL-1) system possesses two distinct receptors (type I and type II) which, together with the accessory protein, mediate a multitude of responses to IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta, including fever. So far, no receptor subtype-specific ligands have been described. Since both types of IL-1 receptors occur in the thermoregulatory areas it was unclear which IL-1 receptor type mediates fever. We report here that for a series of deletion mutants of human recombinant IL-1 beta (hrIL-1 beta), the affinity of these ligands for the type I IL-1 receptor correlates with their efficacy to evoke the fever response (hrIL-1 beta > des-SND52-54 > des-QGE48-50 > des-I56). Thus, the results suggest that agonist occupancy of the type I IL-1 receptor is essential for IL-1 beta-mediated fever.

Abstract
From 1975 to 1989, we treated 238 cases of gastric carcinoma in III stage, 90.7% of these were followed up. The total 5-year survival rate was 45.4%, 10-year survival 33.7%. The 5-year survival rate and 10-year survival rate (56.3% and 47.5%) in the extensive radical treatment group (102 cases, selective R3 or R3) was much higher than that of routine radical treatment group (114 cases R2). The 5-year survival rate and 10-year survival rate in the group with auxillary post-operational chemotherapy were much higher than those of the group without chemotherapy. The post-operative survival rate in the group with chemotherapy plus Chinese medicine was much higher than that of the group with chemotherapy alone. The peritoneal metastatic rate of the group with peritoneal flushing plus chemotherapy (18.7% and 20.6%) was much longer than that of the group without peritoneal flushing and/or chemotherapy (31.9%). We consider that the best treatment of gastric carcinoma in III stage is the sufficient removal of gastric lymph nodes for the prevention of metastasis through peritoneal and circulatory route.

Abstract
An examination of medical and physiological changes before and after tennis competition was performed on 71 middle-aged persons and old people in order to know whether they were adapted to this intense match or not. The result was that in the male group 1 (50-59 yrs), the heart rate, respiration rate and blood pressure before and after the tennis game had no significant differences (P > 0.05), indicating that this group was fit for the tennis competition, in the male group 2 (60-69 yrs) and male group 3 (70-79 yrs), as age advances, the number of unfitness to this game was increased gradually; in the female group (50-59 yrs), 28.5% of them showed a marked increase in the heart rate after the competition. We think that when persons have an electrocardiogram showing a significant undue changes of the ST segment and T wave after the contest, they are not suitable to this violent competition. So the medical surveillance is very important for the old people to play violent games such as tennis. The periodical health examination should be done before any exercise event with emphasis on the cardiovascular system so that the old sportsman can choose the proper exercise item and take self-control during the exercise.
