Abstract
INTRODUCTION The widespread availability of medication without prescription, so-called over the counter (OTC), and the rapid development of health consciousness of Poles is associated with broad access to medical information in the mass media. This causes patients to recognize their own disease, cancel doctor's appointments, and begin self-treatment. This time and money-saving behavior, often signaled by pain, usually leads to the treatment of symptoms alone, without seeking the cause of the disease.The aim of the study was to present life-threatening paracetamol poisoning, and the treatment of acute liver failure. MATERIAL AND METHODS In 2002-2014, 35 patients were hospitalized due to acute paracetamol poisoning: 17 female and 18 male patients aged between 17-59 (mean 32.3 years). Patients were treated in the surgical intensive care unit, where their parameters of liver and renal function were continuously monitored. If there was no improvement in the liver function, patients underwent albumin dialysis with the Prometheus system and were qualified for liver transplantation (LTx). RESULTS 26 patients were treated pharmacologically and 7 out of 9 patients who underwent LTx were dialyzed. Overall, 11 patients had 26 albumin dialysis in total; 4 patients died - 1 post-transplant and 3 pre-transplant. CONCLUSIONS Paracetamol is the cause of many poisonings resulting from the lack of public awareness about toxic interactions with alcohol, and suicide attempts. Acetaminophen-induced acute liver failure concerns a small percentage of patients but can be successfully treated with albumin dialysis, and in extreme cases by liver transplantation.

Abstract
GOALS To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) induced into hepatocyte-like cells and of un-induced BMSCs in acute liver failure rats. METHODS BMSCs in highly homogenous passage 3 were cultured using the whole bone marrow adherent culture method. Hepatic-related characters were confirmed with morphology, RT-PCR analysis, glycogen staining and albumin (ALB) immunofluorescence assay. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) was injected intraperitoneally to establish an acute rat liver failure model. Hepatocyte-like cells or un-induced BMSCs were respectively injected into the models to examine rats' appearance, liver function assay and liver tissue pathology. RESULTS Hepatocyte-like morphology, higher expression of cytokeratin 18 (CK18) mRNA and ALB protein, and glycogen accumulation were confirmed in the induced BMSCs. The transplanted DAPI-labeled BMSCs were localized in the liver tissue 3-14 days after transplantation. The levels of liver function indicators (AST, ALT, ALP, and TBIL) from transplanted rats were significant decreased and pathology was improved, indicating the recovery of liver function. However, the differences were statistically insignificant. CONCLUSION Both hepatocyte-like cells and un-induced BMSCs had a similarly positively therapeutic efficacy on liver regeneration in rat liver failure model.

Abstract
Liver transplantation has become an established treatment in both adults and children for end-stage liver disease, acute hepatic failure and certain liver tumours. There is a significant risk of complications after all forms of liver transplantation. The interventional radiologist plays a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of these complications. The use of image-guided, minimally invasive procedures reduces the need for surgical revision or retransplantation and improves graft and patient survival rate. This article reviews some of the most common vascular and non-vascular complications after paediatric liver transplantation, and the interventional radiology techniques used to diagnose and treat them.

Abstract
Acute liver failure (ALF) was relatively easy to recognise in the days before liver transplantation became available as rescue therapy, because the diagnosis was based on end-stage disease manifestations such as profound coagulopathy, jaundice, encephalopathy and cerebral oedema (in a patient with no history of chronic liver disease). These criteria no longer help us in an era in which we struggle to define which patients are going to progress to this end-stage picture in the time necessary for evaluation and listing for life-saving transplantation. Ideally, identifying which patients will recover spontaneously or with appropriate treatment would relieve the justifiable concern that some patients receive a transplant when, given time, they would have recovered. Currently, the data to guide us in avoiding death without transplantation and unnecessary transplantation remain elusive.

Abstract
Liver transplantation (LT) is the treatment of choice in selected patients with end-stage liver disease and in some with acute liver failure, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and other diseases with no synthetic liver failure. Currently, LT has an overall survival > 90 % at 1 year. Proper selection of LT candidates is important given the shortage in organ donation. The allocation and priorization of organs to patients with chronic liver failure (CLF) in waiting lists, is determined by the MELD priority score (Model of End Stage Liver Disease). Indications for LT in patients with CLF are the same regardless of the etiology (any type of hepatic decompensation or development of HCC). Priority MELD is a variant to this classification used only in special cases such as in those with stable hepatopathy but severe extra-hepatic features (e.g., HCC or hepato-pulmonary syndrome). The indication for LT in patients with acute liver failure (ALF) and acute failure associated to chronic liver failure (ACLF) are not fully established; there are prognostic factors that may guide the decision for urgent LT and some centers, like the King's College Hospital criteria in the UK. Currently, LT is a therapeutic modality in some primary liver tumors (HCC, cholangiocarcinoma) and neuroendocrine liver metastatic tumors. These protocols have provided significant opportunities for long-term survival (> 70% at 5 years). The high demand and shortage of organs have fostered the development of new strategies to benefit more patients, such as the use of extended criteria donors, or "domino" transplants. This review focuses on the most relevant data on the different indications of LT.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Exertional heatstroke with liver involvement is a rare and potentially fatal condition. In this setting, fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) occurs as a result of severe hypoxic hepatitis. CASE REPORT We report the case of a young male athlete who developed exertional heatstroke associated with rhabdomyolysis and hypoxic hepatitis while running the final stages of an ultra-marathon (62 km). The patient rapidly developed multiorgan failure, including fulminant hepatic failure, requiring intensive care admission for mechanical ventilation, hemodialysis, and inotropic support. He failed to improve with supportive measures and underwent an emergency hepatectomy followed by orthotopic liver transplant, after which he recovered completely. CONCLUSIONS We discuss the rationale for liver transplantation in this setting, possible alternative treatments, and the pathophysiology of fulminant liver failure in this rare case.

Abstract
PURPOSE Acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare clinical syndrome associated with a high case fatality rate. Asymptomatic primary infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is common in the general population while acute hepatitis and jaundice are much less common and ALF has been rarely reported. We reviewed the presenting features as well as clinical outcomes amongst consecutive adults with EBV-related ALF. METHODS Amongst the 1,887 adult ALF patients enrolled into the US ALF Study Group from January 1998 to February 2012, there were four patients (0.21 %) with EBV-related ALF. Diagnostic criteria for acute EBV infection included compatible serologies and/or the detection of EBV-encoded RNA (EBER) in liver tissue. RESULTS Median patient age was 30 years (range 18-44); 75 % were male, and only 25 % were immunosuppressed. The median presenting ALT was 504 IU/mL (range 156-4,920), median Alk P was 431 (range 136-1,009), and median bilirubin was 17 mg/dL (range 13-22.1). Liver biopsy findings ranged from cholestasis to submassive necrosis with EBER + staining in two of the three samples tested. Although all of the patients were treated with an antiviral agent, two died of ALF, one underwent liver transplantation (LT) and one survived with supportive care and is well at 5 years. A review of the literature identified four additional LT recipients with favorable long-term outcomes. CONCLUSION Primary EBV infection accounts for <1 % of consecutive adult ALF cases but is associated with a high case fatality rate. LT is associated with favorable short- and long-term outcomes.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation is a known risk in cancer patients receiving cytotoxic or immunosuppressive therapy; however, the risk associated with newer molecularly-targeted agents has not been well-quantified. Imatinib, a small molecule inhibitor directed against BCR-ABL, CKIT, and other tyrosine kinases, has been associated with HBV reactivation primarily in patients treated for chronic myelogenous leukemia. Herein we present the first reported case of a patient who developed HBV reactivation while receiving imatinib therapy for a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in the adjuvant setting. This eventually resulted in fulminant liver failure and was effectively treated with living-related donor liver transplant and anti-viral medication. Currently, no guidelines exist for HBV screening prior to imatinib therapy. This report emphasizes the need for such guidelines and supports the idea that viral reactivation is a risk in all imatinib-treated patients, regardless of the underlying disease.

Abstract
Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) represents a major treatment for end-stage chronic liver disease, as well as selected cases of hepatocellular carcinoma and acute liver failure. The ever-increasing development of imaging modalities significantly contributed, over the last decades, to the management of recipients both in the pre-operative and post-operative period, thus impacting on graft and patients survival. When properly used, imaging modalities such as ultrasound, multidetector computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and procedures of direct cholangiography are capable to provide rapid and reliable recognition and treatment of vascular and biliary complications occurring after OLT. Less defined is the role for imaging in assessing primary graft dysfunction (including rejection) or chronic allograft disease after OLT, e.g., hepatitis C virus (HCV) recurrence. This paper: (1) describes specific characteristic of the above imaging modalities and the rationale for their use in clinical practice; (2) illustrates main imaging findings related to post-OLT complications in adult patients; and (3) reviews future perspectives emerging in the surveillance of recipients with HCV recurrence, with special emphasis on MRI.

Abstract
Acute liver failure (ALF) is a life-threatening end-stage liver disease, causing high mortality all over the world. Here, we presented a 54-year-old male patient, suffering from drug-induced ALF on the basis of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. At that time, the only available donor we could find was his 44-year-old sister. We performed living donor auxiliary partial orthotopic liver transplantation (APOLT) on the second day of admission. The right lobe of the donor liver was implanted into the recipient orthotopically. The actual graft-to-recipient weightratio (GRWR) was 0.85% and the postoperative immunosuppression was a combination of tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) and steroids. The patient recovered consciousness on the third post-operative day and was discharged with normal liver function after 43 days of transplantation. After a 48-month follow-up, the recipient has been restored to normal life and the immunosuppression has been tapered off (tacrolimus, 1 mg/d). Besides, the size of the native liver has extended to 29% of standard liver volume (SLV) and the native liver cells have returned to normal pathological condition. In conclusion, APOLT is a life-saving treatment for ALF with excellent post-operative outcomes.

Abstract
Wilson's disease presenting as fulminant hepatic failure is a rare presentation that carries a high morbidity and mortality. We report a young patient who developed fulminant hepatic failure as the initial manifestation of Wilson's disease. Virtually undetectable serum alkaline phosphatase provided the first clue to the diagnosis. Our patient underwent a successful liver transplantation which is the only effective treatment in patients with Wilsonian fulminant hepatic failure. In this report, we discuss laboratory clues to the diagnosis of this form of Wilson's disease. Clinicians should have a high suspicion of Wilson's disease as any delay in diagnosis can be catastrophic.

Abstract
There is significant geographic variation in the etiologies and prognoses of acute liver failure (ALF). The aims of the present study were to determine the causes and short-term outcomes of ALF in Argentina, to evaluate the performance of prognostic criteria, and to identify clinical prognostic factors of death. We performed a retrospective analysis of 154 adult patients with ALF who were admitted to 6 liver transplantation (LT) programs between June 2005 and December 2011. The most frequent causes of ALF were viral hepatitis B (46 patients or 30%), autoimmune hepatitis (AIH; 40 patients or 26%), and indeterminate causes (40 patients or 26%). No acetaminophen (ACM) overdose was reported. One hundred and twenty one patients (78%) were included on the waiting list, and LT was performed for 83 patients (54%). Overall survival rate is now corected to 73%. Multivariate logistic regression identified 2 independent variables associated with adverse outcomes on admission: a Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score ≥ 29 and an encephalopathy grade ≥ 3. In a direct comparison using a receiving operating characteristic curve analysis, the MELD score [C statistic = 0.830, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.73-0.93] had better prognostic accuracy for predicting outcomes than the Clichy criteria (C statistic = 0.719, 95% CI = 0.58-0.85) or the King's College criteria (C statistic = 0.631, 95% CI = 0.49-0.77). In conclusion, hepatitis B and AIH were the most frequent causes of fulminant hepatic failure in our series, and no cases of ACM overdosing were identified. A MELD score ≥ 29 and an encephalopathy grade ≥ 3 at admission were associated with death. The MELD score at admission showed the highest prognostic accuracy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis is an aggressive and usually fatal form of viral hepatitis in immunosuppressed patients. We assessed the hepatotoxicity of methotrexate and prednisolone combination therapy in the background of hepatitis B virus infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS We report the clinical course of a 55-year-old woman who underwent a deceased-donor liver transplant for fulminant liver failure. RESULTS The patient's medical history was significant for hepatitis B virus infection and rheumatoid arthritis. Methotrexate and prednisolone combination therapy were started 5 months earlier. The patient was hospitalized because of an elevation in her liver enzymes and total bilirubin. Deterioration of liver functions and encephalopathy were developed 5 weeks after hospital admission. A deceased-donor liver transplant was performed, and pathological examination of recipient liver revealed fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis. The patient was reoperated on for bile leak and discharged 40 days after the deceased-donor liver transplant. CONCLUSIONS The natural course of the current case was similar to previously reported cases with fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis. Clinicians should consider the potential hepatotoxicity of methotrexate and steroid therapy in hepatitis B virus infected patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We assessed the anesthetic management and short-term morbidity and mortality in pediatrics patients who underwent an orthotopic liver transplant for fulminant hepatic failure or end-stage liver disease in a university hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the records of children who underwent orthotopic liver transplant from May 2002 to May 2012. Patients were categorized into 2 groups: group fulminant hepatic failure (n=22) and group end-stage liver disease (n=19). Perioperative data related to anesthetic management and intraoperative events were collected along with information related to postoperative course and survival to hospital discharge. RESULTS Mean age and weight for groups fulminant hepatic failure and end-stage liver disease were 8.6 ± 2.7 years and 10.8 ± 3.8 years (P = .04) and 29.2 ± 11.9 kg and 33.7 ± 16.9 kg (P = .46). There were no differences between the groups regarding length of anhepatic phase (65 ± 21 min vs 73 ± 18 min, P = .13) and operation time (9.1 ± 1.6 h vs 9.5 ± 1.8 h, P = .23). When compared with the patients in group fulminant hepatic failure, those in group end-stage liver disease more commonly had a Glasgow Coma score of 7 or less (32% vs 6%, P = .04). Compared with patients in group fulminant hepatic failure, those in group end-stage liver disease were more frequently extubated in the operating room (31.8% versus 89.5% P < .001). Postoperative duration of mechanical ventilation (2.78 ± 4.02 d vs 2.85 ± 10.21 d, P = .05), and the mortality rates at 1 year after orthotopic liver transplant (7.3% vs 0%, P = .09) were similar between the groups. CONCLUSIONS During pediatric orthotopic liver transplant, those children with fulminant hepatic failure require more intraoperative fluids and more frequent perioperative mechanical ventilation than those with end-stage liver disease.

Abstract
Hepatitis E virus of genotype 3 (HEV-3) is an emerging cause of sporadic autochthonous acute hepatitis in Europe. Although spontaneous outcome of hepatitis E is usually favorable, fulminant liver failure has been described worldwide. In Europe, autochthonous hepatitis E associated with fulminant hepatic failure and leading to liver transplantation has been exceptionally reported. We report here four cases of fulminant and sub-fulminant hepatitis E proposed for liver transplantation in Marseille University hospitals between July 2006 and March 2010. HEV diagnosis relied on detection of anti-HEV IgM antibodies and HEV RNA in serum samples. All cases were men, with no travel history in hyperendemic areas. HEV sequence analyses revealed genotype 3 HEV in the four patients. Liver histology indicated severe acute hepatitis in all of them, pre-existing fibrosis being found in two cases. Two patients underwent liver transplantation, and the two other patients could not be transplanted due to septic complications and died. HEV testing should be performed for the initial evaluation of every acute liver failure regardless of the epidemiological and clinical context. With respect to the potentially fulminant evolution of HEV genotype 3 infections, treatment with ribavirin of severe acute hepatitis E should be considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Right-lobe living-donor liver transplantation (RLDLT) is an excellent option to reduce donor shortages for adult patients with acute liver failure (ALF). The aim of this study was to evaluate the etiologies and outcomes of 30 consecutive adult patients who underwent emergency RLDLT for ALF. METHODS Between January 2007 and September 2011, we examined data from medical records of patients with ALF who underwent RLDLT. RESULTS Their mean age was 32.2 ± 13.05 years. The etiologies of ALF were acute hepatitis B (n = 11; 36.6%), hepatitis A (n = 4; 13.3%), drug intoxication (n = 4; 13.3%), pregnancy (n = 2; 6.7%), hepatitis B with pregnancy (n = 1; 3.3%), mushroom intoxication (n = 1; 3.3%), and unknown (n = 7; 23.3%). The mean hepatic coma grade (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score) was 34.13 ± 8.72. The 43 (48.7%) postoperative complications were minor (grades I-II) and 44 (51.3%) were major (grades III-V). Reoperation was required in 14 of 30 (47%) recipients (grades IIIb-IVa). Deaths occurred owing to pulmonary (n = 2), cardiac (n = 1), septic (n = 2), or encephalopathic (n = 4) complications. The mean durations of intensive care unit stay and postoperative hospitalization were 3.2 ± 2.3 and 29.5 ± 23 days, respectively. The survival rate was 70%. The mean follow-up duration was 305 days (range, 1-1582). CONCLUSION Liver transplantation is potentially the only curative modality, markedly improving the prognosis of patients with ALF. The interval between ALF onset and death is short and crucial because of the rapid, progressive multiorgan failure. Thus, RLDLT should be considered to be a life-saving procedure for adult patients with ALF, requiring quicker access to a deceased-donor liver graft and a short ischemia time.

Abstract
Liver failure is an increasing problem. Donor-organ shortage results in patients dying before receiving a transplant. Since the liver can regenerate, alternative therapies providing temporary liver-support are sought. A bioartificial-liver would temporarily substitute function in liver failure buying time for liver regeneration/organ-procurement. Our aim: to develop a prototype bioartificial-liver-machine (BAL) comprising a human liver-derived cell-line, cultured to phenotypic competence and deliverable in a clinical setting to sites distant from its preparation. The objective of this study was to determine whether its use would improve functional parameters of liver failure in pigs with acute liver failure, to provide proof-of-principle. HepG2 cells encapsulated in alginate-beads, proliferated in a fluidised-bed-bioreactor providing a biomass of 4-6 × 10(10)cells, were transported from preparation-laboratory to point-of-use operating theatre (6000 miles) under perfluorodecalin at ambient temperature. Irreversible ischaemic liver failure was induced in anaesthetised pigs, after portal-systemic-shunt, by hepatic-artery-ligation. Biochemical parameters, intracranial pressure, and functional-clotting were measured in animals connected in an extracorporeal bioartificial-liver circuit. Efficacy was demonstrated comparing outcomes between animals connected to a circuit containing alginate-encapsulated cells (Cell-bead BAL), and those connected to circuit containing alginate capsules without cells (Empty-bead BAL). Cells of the biomass met regulatory standards for sterility and provenance. All animals developed progressive liver-failure after ischaemia induction. Efficacy of BAL was demonstrated since animals connected to a functional biomass (+ cells) had significantly smaller rises in intracranial pressure, lower ammonia levels, more bilirubin conjugation, improved acidosis and clotting restoration compared to animals connected to the circuit without cells. In the +cell group, human proteins accumulated in pigs' plasma. Delivery of biomass using a short-term cold-chain enabled transport and use without loss of function over 3 days. Thus, a fluidised-bed bioreactor containing alginate-encapsulated HepG2 cell-spheroids improved important parameters of acute liver failure in pigs. The system can readily be up-scaled and transported to point-of-use justifying development at clinical scale.

Abstract
Background Tools to predict death or spontaneous survival are necessary to inform liver transplantation (LTx) decisions in pediatric acute liver failure (PALF), but such tools are not available. Recent data suggest that immune/inflammatory dysregulation occurs in the setting of acute liver failure. We hypothesized that specific, dynamic, and measurable patterns of immune/inflammatory dysregulation will correlate with outcomes in PALF. Methods We assayed 26 inflammatory mediators on stored serum samples obtained from a convenience sample of 49 children in the PALF study group (PALFSG) collected within 7 days after enrollment. Outcomes were assessed within 21 days of enrollment consisting of spontaneous survivors, non-survivors, and LTx recipients. Data were subjected to statistical analysis, patient-specific Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) inference. Findings Raw inflammatory mediator levels assessed over time did not distinguish among PALF outcomes. However, DBN analysis did reveal distinct interferon-gamma-related networks that distinguished spontaneous survivors from those who died. The network identified in LTx patients pre-transplant was more like that seen in spontaneous survivors than in those who died, a finding supported by PCA. Interpretation The application of DBN analysis of inflammatory mediators in this small patient sample appears to differentiate survivors from non-survivors in PALF. Patterns associated with LTx pre-transplant were more like those seen in spontaneous survivors than in those who died. DBN-based analyses might lead to a better prediction of outcome in PALF, and could also have more general utility in other complex diseases with an inflammatory etiology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Historically, mitochondrial disorders have been associated with predominantly multisystem or neurological symptoms. If present, hepatic complications were thought to be a late feature. Recently, mutations in at least 4 nuclear genes have been identified in infants presenting with rapidly progressive hepatic failure, which may be precipitated by infection or drugs. We aimed to determine whether hepatic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) depletion is associated with apparently isolated hepatic failure in individuals with acute liver failure (ALF) of known or unknown etiologies undergoing liver transplant (LT). In addition, we wished to establish whether there was an excess of mutations in gene known to cause hepatic mtDNA depletion. METHODS Using previously established methods, we demonstrated that end-stage liver disease from known causes did not lead to hepatic mtDNA depletion. RESULTS Using thresholds derived from receiver-operator curve analysis, 66% of cases with ALF had probable or definite mtDNA depletion, including 34% with definite mtDNA depletion. There was a small but significant increase in the proportion of patients undergoing LT for ALF with heterozygous mutations known to lead to mtDNA depletion and hepatic failure compared with controls (P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Liver disease severe enough to require LT does not cause secondary mtDNA depletion; however, the majority of patients undergoing LT for ALF had reduced mtDNA content, which fell within the range seen in patients with classic mtDNA depletion. A subset of patients with ALF has mutations in genes known to lead to mtDNA depletion and hepatic failure. Together, these results suggest defective mtDNA maintenance is associated with ALF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS To explore the role of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)-loaded polylactic acid-O-carboxymethylated chitosan (PLA-O-CMC) nanoparticles in hepatocyte transplantation (HCT) for treating rat acute liver failure (ALF). METHODS Five milliliters of hepatocytes respectively treated with conventional culture (group I), PLA-O-CMC nanoparticles (group II) and HGF-loaded PLA-O-CMC nanoparticles (group III) were transplanted into the abdominal cavities of rat with ALF. In group IV, rats were treated as group II except intravenous 10 pg of HGF daily for 7 days, and in group V, rats were given intraperitoneal RPMI-1640. RESULTS The survival rate on the 14th day after HCT was higher in groups III IV, and II than in group V (p<0.05). Hepatic function in groups II-IV was improved 24 h after HCT (p<0.05, compared with group V). The recovery of hepatic function was the best in group III. In group III, mitotic index was 10.20% on the 5th day after HCT (p<0.05, compared with other groups) and Ki-67 labeling index was 16.8% on the 7th day after HCT (p<0.05, compared with group V). CONCLUSIONS HGF-loaded PLA-O-CMC nanoparticles can steadily release HGF, and exhibits better tendencies in liver regeneration, survival rate and hepatic function compared with intravenous HGF.

Abstract
The first liver transplant in the former Czechoslovakia took place in Brno on 2 February 1983; the patient concerned has lived for more than 30 years with a normally functioning liver and is one of the longest surviving patients after a liver transplant in Europe. The Cardiovascular and Transplantation Surgery Centre (CTSC) in Brno has experienced an increased development in the area of liver transplants since the mid 1990s. At present, about 30 patients a year undergo a transplantation, with 451 liver transplants in total as of 31 December 2012. The primary indication concerns liver cirrhosis of various etiologies, with an increasing number of cases of cirrhosis resulting from hepatitis C. Urgent liver transplants (for acute liver failure or primary dysfunction of first liver graft) amount to 11% of cases. There were 18 retransplants performed as of 31 December 2012, with 50% five year survival. The primary graft dysfunction was present in 7 patients (i.e. 1.5%). The 1 year survival rate of all patients after a liver transplant performed in CTSC is 92%, 5 year survival rate is 80%, and 10 year survival rate is 71%. Currently the parameters such as recipients age, donors age, and transplant waiting time has been statistically increasing; small recipients with a body weight below 70 kg especially have to wait for a significantly longer period of time (waiting median of 178 days). In CTSC Brno 14 combined simultaneous transplants (13 transplants of liver + kidney and one combined simultaneous transplants of liver + heart + kidney in 2005) have been performed as of 31 December 2012.
